> C.A.N.I. Can On Sunday 10th July, Fine & Country welcomed around 3,500 people to watch teams battle it out in the eighth Fine & Country Gold Cup at Dallas Burston Polo Club. In typical British style, attendees lunched on picnics and sipped Pimms as they watched C.A.N.I. claim the title. Attendees donated their car parking fee to the Fine & Country Foundation, which is dedicated to fighting homelessness, raising £5,000 in charitable donations. David Lindley, CEO of Fine & Country, said: “It was a pleasure to again host the Cup. The event was a great chance for attendees to experience a competitive day of polo and browse our selection of equestrian homes. Congratulations to the winners C.A.N.I. who ‘came through in the sunshine and ominous clouds to win a thrilling tournament.”

> A Big Weekend The annual Fine & Country Big Weekend took place in July, with agents from around the globe meeting at the grand Belfry Hotel. The conference saw exciting Fine & Country updates shared and a masterful talk from Caspar Berry, professional poker player and motivational speaker, amongst other agenda items. The evening concluded with a divine Gala dinner, where Fine & Country celebrated its 15th anniversary. The second day kicked off with an International Steering Committee meeting and ended with viewing the site for the latest Fine & Country opening, at the Mailbox in Birmingham. The weekend was rounded off with an action-packed day with the Fine & Country Gold Cup at the Dallas Burston Polo Club in Warwickshire.

> Golf properties At this year’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, Fine & Country Golf presented properties for sale at some of the finest golf courses in the world to over 100,000 fans. Need a weekend escape? Giselle Whiteaker plans 48 hours in Porto, the Portuguese home of port.

W

e recommend treating yourself to a stay at The Yeatman Hotel, in the heart of the Gaia district, during your idyll in Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city. The Yeatman bills itself as a wine hotel, the theme running through the establishment, from the extensive wine cellars to the Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa, which offers therapies using extracts from the vine. Day One: After a hearty breakfast at The Yeatman, with the Duoro River snaking below, walk downhill to the Ponte Luis I that anchors the city. The double-decker bridge spanning the river was created by Teophile Seyrig, a former partner of Gustave Eiffel, and the views from the upper level are spectacular. Crossing to the Porto side, board the Funicular dos Guindais to ascend the steep hill to the old town. Admire the panoramic views across the river, taking in the Ribeira waterfront, the Cais de Gaia on the opposing bank, and the barcos rabelos rocking gently on their moorings. These boats traditionally transported barrels of port from the vineyards upstream. Walking towards Avenida dos Aliados, a sloping boulevard lined with grand buildings and a central promenade, you’ll find the São Bento train station. Stop to appreciate the delicate blue and white tiled panels painted by artist Jorge Colaço, which allude to the history of Portugal and the development of transport. At the top of the avenue stands the Town Hall, a palatial granite and marble structure with a tall bell tower. By now you’ll have worked up an appetite, so pop into the fascinating 19th-century Mercado do Bolhão. This market does a brisk trade in fresh local produce, so it’s the perfect place to sample local wines, smoked meat and cheese, or swing by one of the inexpensive stalls on the ground level for a fresh seafood feast. Circling back towards the river, drop into the Lello Bookstore. Built in 1906 and renovated in 1995 after falling into disrepair, this is now arguably the most beautiful book shop in the world, and possibly the most ornate, blending Neo-Gothic and Art Deco elements including carved wooden ceilings, stained-glass, and an eye-catching red staircase. From here it’s a short walk to Clerigos Tower, an easily spotted architectural landmark that affords a bird’s-eye view of the city’s red roofs and hills atop its 240 steps. The 1763 structure is the bell tower of the baroque Clerigos Church. Continuing towards the river, the next stop is one of the city’s oldest monuments, the 12th Century Porto Cathedral. The cathedral is flanked by two square towers, each supported by two buttresses and crowned with a cupola. Less than ten minutes’ walk away, the magnificent, Neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa, the former stock exchange, ➤➤

is housed in a square containing a statue of Henry the Navigator, the first of Portugal’s great explorers. Next door, is the 13th Century São Francisco church, boasting a flamboyant interior laced with gold leaf. For an authentic Portuguese food experience, book into ODE Porto Winehouse, tucked down a side street near São Francisco. This eatery features an impressive wine list that extends to the décor, with slate table-tops resting on wine barrels. The restaurant sources fresh Portuguese produce, including bread from Bragança, smoked pork from Minho and sheep’s milk cheese from Alentejo and it’s minutes from the waterfront, which comes alive at night. Day Two: Start the day with a refreshing dip in The Yeatman’s lush swimming pool, before crossing back to the Porto side and trundling to Foz, Porto’s beach suburb, on a 1920’s vintage tram. The trip to the Atlantic takes around 20 minutes. Wander through the Jardim do Passeio Alegre, an elegant garden entered through two 19th Century obelisks and surrounded by palm trees, sculptures, two mini-golf courses, and a bandstand that hosts philharmonic concerts during the summer.

For dinner, book a table at the gastronomic restaurant at The Yeatman, the only restaurant in Porto to carry a Michelin star. Sample innovative dishes accompanied by Alvarinho wines as you gaze out over the city, knowing that you have but sampled the delights that Porto has to offer. ■

Most of the beaches here are dotted with outcrops of rocks, so not great for swimming, but stroll along the water’s edge to the swanky beachside Praia da Luz restaurant for an early lunch, before continuing another mile or so to Castelo do Queijo, a fortress dating from 1661. It is reached by a drawbridge, and the cannons inside point towards the sea. From the fortress, amble through Parque da Cidade, Portugal’s largest urban park. Catch the bus back to Porto in time for an afternoon port tour and tasting at any one of the port wine lodges on the Gaia side of the river.

he European Tour is a spectacular golf tour, spanning numerous global locations. Throughout the destinations, there are a plethora of spectacular golf courses playing host to big European Tour tournaments, featuring the best players in world golf. Venues based in Europe welcome the European Tour during the summer months and into autumn, especially between May and September. One of these is Le Golf National, near Paris, France. This year marked a special milestone for Le Golf National, with the staging of the 100th edition of the Open de France. The venue is now the “home” of this historic event - the oldest Open in Continental Europe - having played host since 1991. The Tour’s top golfers took to the fantastic Albatros course, with Thai golfer Thongchai Jaidee winning the event by four strokes and claiming his eighth European Tour title in the process. The Albatros course at Le Golf National has the privilege of hosting the Ryder Cup in 2018, and golf fans have the opportunity to play the course in the lead up to the event. Having recently reopened following renovation work, including a new irrigation and draining system, the Albatros course is certainly a world-class golfing experience. “The developments carried out at Le Golf National should excite all golfers, not just the professionals, as it is now open for anyone to come and try for themselves,” says David MacLaren, Director of Property and Venue Development at the European Tour. “Le Golf National is one of the jewels in the European Tour Properties crown, and we must applaud

Paul Armitage and his team for their efforts in this project, and for their commitment to maintaining and improving an already world-class facility.” Having enjoyed the testing challenge of playing at Le Golf National, and after major Championships and golf’s return to the Olympic Games, the European Tour moves on, arriving in August in the Czech Republic to play the D+D Real Czech Masters at Albatross Golf Resort in Prague. The event takes place between the 18th and 21st August. It’s been a great year for Albatross Golf Resort, as it became the 19th member of the European Tour Properties network and an official European Tour Destination. Located just a 20 minute drive from Prague, the resort is impressive and has played host to both men’s and ladies European Tour events. Stanislav Lisner, General Manager at Albatross Golf Resort, spoke in glowing terms regarding the European Tour’s decision to award the resort membership of the European Tour Properties network. “The overall quality of the resort played the biggest role, but it is also about the location. The first two years (of being on the European Tour) have proven that the players like it here. Albatross was voted in the top five best-prepared courses on the Tour on both occasions and players often bring their families with them.” Albatross Golf Resort is a fantastic golfing venue, but Lisner is keen to continue improving, both in terms of the golf course and the facilities. “We are very proud of our greens and tees. We have five sets of tees on every hole, hand-mowed every day. We also try to add new features every year. For example, over the last winter we built three new lakes and two new creeks connecting ➤➤

them. We just want to be better and better,” he said. It’s clear the management and staff at Albatross Golf Resort are motivated to maintain and continually improve upon current standards, which are already high. Before heading back overseas, the European Tour’s top golfers will arrive in The Netherlands to contest the KLM Open. Scheduled to take place between the 8th and 11th of September, the KLM Open has been part of the European Tour calendar since the Tour was established in 1972, and, in 2016, the tournament will be hosted by The Dutch, in Spijk, near Groningen. The Dutch is an inland links-style golf course and was created by Colin Montgomerie and Ross McMurray of European Golf Design, which is a joint venture between IMG and European Tour. The undulating greens, burn-like water hazards and links-like bunkering make The Dutch a test for even the best European Tour golfers and the off-course facilities easily match the standard of the course. A worldclass, awe-inspiring clubhouse complements the golf course superbly and it’s little wonder The Dutch will remain the host of the KLM Open until 2018, at the very least. When the winter weather takes a grip over the majority of Europe, the European Tour moves to sunnier climes in the United Arab Emirates for the exciting 2016 season finale. The DP World Tour Championship will take place between the 17th and 20th November and will not only be the seasonending event on the European Tour International Schedule, but also the final event of the Race to Dubai. Design for the young As a family expands, it’s logical to move house to provide everyone the space they need. Finding the perfect property may only be the first step, as Lisa Preece discovers.

N

ew York City trained Heather Garrett has a keen eye for beautiful design. After training in the Big Apple, studying interior design at Parsons and being tutored by French designer Robert Couturier, she moved to Durham, North Carolina, to open Heather Garrett Interiors and now has clients from Dallas to San Francisco. During this time, she developed her own style and has worked on many beautiful homes throughout the USA. Never one to push design over functionality, Heather’s signature style combines the practicality of family life with a variety of sophisticated forms and textures – plaster, hide, velvet, linen – and extraordinary lighting. She also loves bringing nature into her designs, believing that nothing made by man is as beautiful as that found in nature. Her work has been noticed in the design community, and as a member of both the American Society of Interior Designers and the Interior Design Society, she earned the coveted “Best of Houzz: Design” recognition for five years running, 2012–2016.

It retained some of their touches, including a sunroom off the kitchen, with a glass mosaic floor. It was beautiful, but impractical for crawling babies.” Music Room Some of the spaces needed to become more family friendly, like the spacious music room. With a grand piano, large centre table, wet bar, and polished floors, it was beautiful, but not easily utilised. “The dark hardwood flooring through the main level and in the stairwell was gleaming, but cold. The space needed added warmth, through textiles on the floor, walls, and furnishings,” explains Heather. This room was transformed into a cosy family room for TV time, reading, or watching sports with friends, with the handy wet bar nearby. “The room is enfilade with the living room from the home’s entry, so it was important that the formal living and informal family spaces could coexist in one line of sight. ➤➤

Project Recently, Heather was approached by a family who were moving from North Carolina to Dallas. They needed her help in designing their home interior around their young family. With two small children, the family needed a functional and welcoming space, not forgetting the importance of soft floors and furnishings for tumbling toddlers. “When the clients first saw the rambling 1950’s red brick Georgian home in the leafy Greenway Park neighbourhood of Dallas, it was designed more for a formal lifestyle than my clients were intending to live,” says Heather. “The estate was previously home to successful businessman Ross Perot, Jr. and his large young family during the 1980s.

I customised a mural of birds in flight with New York City based designers Trove, to incorporate the colours of the mosaic floor border. I then filled the room with a soft, wool, custom rug from Stark Carpet.” Stairs The stairwell was full of echoes and cold when the family first moved in, but Heather and her team turned it into a warm and inviting space. “We grounded the stairs with a foyer table and lamp light, a chandelier, and artwork. It is almost a room in itself. I feel it’s important to create ‘miniature rooms’ wherever you can.
