Each house costs ÂŁ1,800 to build, so each trekker has a target of funding an entire house. The trek will take 10 days and cover incredible Nepalese landscapes high in the mountains. urn the key, push this button in half way, then 10 seconds later, push it all the way,” says Guillaume, as the boat’s engine hums to life. I’m in the port of Grez-Neuville in the Anjou region of France, along with three friends, learning all we need to know to cruise the Sarthe and Mayenne rivers for a week on a boat from Nicols.

saucisson we intend to buy at the local markets. There’s an outdoor table on the back deck and a seating space on her bow that looks perfect for a coffee break. Best of all, she has bow thrusters, which simplifies manoeuvring, reducing my fears of crash landing into the side of a lock.

I’ve been told these are the perfect rivers for novice cruisers, but I’m still nervous when Guillaume slides from the captain’s seat and ushers me in. Taking a deep breath, I turn the key and press the ignition, perhaps a tad too enthusiastically, but Guillaume smiles and urges me onwards. We putter slowly up the river and under a bridge, after which Guillaume tells me to up the speed and do a U-turn. Although I’d like to take him along for reassurance, he needs to get back to work, so once we’re through the first lock, he guides me in to the mooring dock and jumps off, leaving us to our own devices.

We’ve opted to start with a short cruise of just 13 kilometres along the Mayenne to Chenillé-Changé, so I can get comfortable with the idea that the Octo is under my control. It isn’t long before I’ve booted her up to full speed – which isn’t very fast – and the others have enough confidence to leave me at the helm. The navigation notes clearly show where I should be on the river, whether the bridges are one way, which arch to go through, and where the locks are placed. I can feel myself relaxing as we chug along the waterway, flanked by deep green banks. We slow down for fishermen, some wave as we drift pass, and glide into the locks, making use of the bow thrusters to adjust our position.

The boat’s a beauty. She’s an Octo, from the Estivale range, with four cabins, two of which can be converted into double or twin beds, and two bathrooms. There are two steering positions – one inside, and one on the upper deck – and a spacious combined living/dining/kitchen, complete with a full-sized fridge, which will fit all the fromage and

At Chenillé-Changé, we moor at a wooden dock near an old mill, now a museum. We dine on the back deck as the sky slowly darkens, moving from pale blue to pink to inky black. It’s incredibly peaceful – we are the only boat at the dock – and it isn’t long before we retire, the soft lap of the water providing a lullaby. ➤➤

Our trial run over, the next day we head back from whence we came, stopping wherever whim dictates. Quaint villages filled with houses with steep-pitched roofs, châteaux, churches and gardens are reason enough to pause. A trio of geese circles the boat in hopes of sharing our al fresco lunch, but paddle away disappointed. Mid-afternoon, having long since proved our proficiency at locks, we moor opposite the castle and cathedral in the centre of Angers. Ten minutes later, we moor again, this time at the public moorings rather than the private ones, performing a complicated reverse parking manoeuvre with a little help from some friendly French boaters. Angers is bustling. There’s a festival on and people throng the streets and the harbour, admiring the plethora of half-timbered houses, the twin 75-metre spires of Cathédrale St-Maurice, and the Château d’Angers, a vast fortress that houses the Tapestry of the Apocalypse, a major piece of medieval art. We stay overnight, admiring the sights and sipping beer on the waterfront. We consider extending our stay here, but instead stock up at the Sunday market and head for more idyllic climes along the River Sarthe. We find these at Cheffes, where we moor for the afternoon, exploring the town before moving on to Châteauneuf-sur-Sarthe. The days quickly fall into a pattern. We take a morning stroll, buy fresh bread from the local boulangerie and perhaps stop for a coffee, before setting off to see where the flow of the river takes us. It strikes me that boating is akin to travelling in a caravan, but in France at least, somewhat more picturesque. Motoring past tiny villages hugging the riverbank, it feels like we’ve stepped into a place where life is simpler, demands are fewer, and mobile phones never ring. The highlight is possibly Solesmes; we moor with views of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre, a Benedictine monastery where the monks perform Gregorian chants, singing the psalms and prayers of the sacred liturgy seven times a day. Or it could be Asnières-surVègre, officially labelled a “Small Town of Character”, with its Romanesque Old Bridge and the Church of St. Hilary. Remarkable listed frescoes adorn the church walls and trees wear knitted coats outside. Our week ends all too soon in Sable-sur-Sarthe, where blue and white Nicols boats form neat rows along from Sable’s Notre-Dame. We buy bags of buttery Sable biscuits, products of the town, and dine on fresh seafood at La Terrace, overlooking the river. “To our last night,” we toast, clinking glasses. here’s little doubt the golf courses that are part of European Tour Properties offer players numerous challenges, but on the flip side, the event venues face challenges of their own. Take Le Golf National in France, home to the HNA Open de France at the end of June and the 2018 Ryder Cup at the end of September. Hosting two events in a relatively short space of time keeps the pressure on. “We are busy, but organised,” says Paul Armitage, Director and General Manager of Le Golf National. “We are following a detailed plan that has been plotted out with European Tour agronomists, Ryder Cup officials and our team of specialist greenkeepers, headed up by Alejandro Reyes.” It’s not only facility and course maintenance that keeps everyone on their toes – Armitage cites other challenges in keeping all stakeholders happy, including current course customers, which isn’t easy when construction is in progress and occasional closures are necessary. Staff members also need to be kept focused and motivated, as they are the face of the venue and ambassadors for the sport in France. Naturally, preparation spans a long time frame – Armitage says they have been working on this for more than five years – but there will always be some things that can’t be controlled, like the weather. If the weather now is anything to go by, though, the 2018 Ryder Cup is set to be a roaring success. It’s all good practice for Le Golf National, which will also welcome the 2024 Paris Olympic Games Men and Women’s golf competitions. The weather is not a factor Dubai’s Jumeirah Golf Estates has to worry much about – the year-round warm climate is a major factor in attracting golfers to Dubai. “Driving greater golf tourism is one of the key goals we set ourselves. That’s why we work as closely as possible with our key stakeholders and have a coordinated approach to ensure Dubai’s golfing experience is the best in the world,” says Souzane Abou Eid, Head of Marketing for Jumeirah Golf Estates, which hosts the DP World Tour Championship in November, the season finale of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai. Jumeirah Golf Estates has welcomed the world’s top 60 golfers annually for the past nine years, attracting over 65,000 visitors. This year, an increase in spectator numbers

is expected. “The Race to Dubai is a positive contributor to raising the profile of golf in the Middle East. As we welcome some of the game’s greatest players to Jumeirah Golf Estates, we also get the opportunity to showcase our Greg Norman-designed Earth and Fire courses to audiences on a global scale,” says Abou Eid. “We prepare the course throughout the year for next year’s event,” says Antonio Castelo, Golf Director at Verdura Resort in Sicily, Italy, which hosted the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open in May. “There has been a programme in place to bring our golf courses to the highest standard. As the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open is played on a composite course from the West and East courses, it means we have to prepare a 36-hole course for an event that is then played on 18 holes.” London Golf Club is well-versed in hosting events of this nature. “Since the beginning of our partnership with the European Tour, we have had the pleasure of hosting many professional tournaments, such as the 2008 and 2009 European Open and the 2014 Volvo World Match Championship,” says Chief Executive Stephen Follett. The Staysure Tour is heading to London Golf Club for the inaugural edition of the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship in August. “The team at London Golf Club has been working hard to prepare not only the International Course, but all aspects related to tournament hospitality, as we pride ourselves on our ability to offer an unrivalled level of service and attention to detail,” says Follett. Inaugural events bring their own challenges, but London Golf Club is primed and ready to go, as was Diamond Country Club in Austria, when it hosted the Shot Clock Masters in June. The Shot Clock Masters is golf’s answer to slow games, with each play having a time limit. “We saved more than 40 minutes in each group and the players played on average more than one shot better than last year,” says Christian Hieke, General Manager of Diamond Country Club, citing just one of the reasons for positive post-event feedback. One thing is certain – the success of these events is not left to chance. European Tour Properties event venues recognise hosting a tournament results in visibility for the venue, which makes all of the preparation pay off. albonne, constructed around an ancient village, is a commune near Nice in the Provence-AlpesCôte d’Azur region in south-eastern France. Valbonne means “the good valley” in Provençal, and it is named so for a reason – it features a beautiful old town, built in a peaceful valley bursting with Mediterranean vegetation. Open-plan design Creating a flowing open-plan space can be a challenge. Fine & Country Interior Design talks to Design by Deborah to discover how they created the perfect international home for a jet-setting couple.

L

ocated in an affluent suburb of Madrid, within easy reach of the airport, this apartment was chosen as a second home for an international couple who wanted to create a sophisticated and stylish look. Previously, a young family owned the property, so it required a complete change of interior design. Design by Deborah is a UK design firm with extensive international experience. They were chosen to design this Spanish home, managing everything from sourcing the products to organising the entire project. The first task was to strip out all of the built-in furniture and create a feeling of space by keeping the dĂŠcor clean and simple, complementing the beautiful wooden floors and doors and taking advantage of the bright natural light.

When choosing furniture, Design by Deborah circumvented compact designs to avoid making the room look overcrowded. Open-plan living can support bold design statements, both in scale and colour. In particular, choose sofas carefully. Different scales and shapes, armless or high-sided, L-shapes or straight designs will all affect the visual flow of the space in different ways. A good way to manage open-plan space is to create zones by grouping pieces of furniture together. The larger the height of the furniture, the more intimate the space will feel, whereas low-backed furniture gives the sense that each group is part of a larger space. A similar style of furniture in different colours can also define areas and can give each zone a unique character.

The couple decided artwork was going to be the focal point of this apartment, so the furnishings were pared down to ensure a clear focus. The chosen colour palette used cool greys and blues with a splash of red to give a Spanish accent. Everything was designed to enjoy the amazing views while creating an easy-to-maintain modern theme.

Flooring is an easy way to define distinct spaces with rugs on a hard floor. There is also an option to combine rugs with hard flooring, though carpets should be slightly sunken to avoid unsightly edges or tripping hazards. Changing the colours of the flooring, or the pattern of the layout in the case of tiles and wood, can also define areas within a large room.

The apartment is open plan, but many rooms need to serve more than one function, so organising the layout was crucial to maintain balance and harmony. There are many ways to define distinct areas, such as through the use of furniture, lighting, flooring, or perhaps a combination of all three.

Lighting will also help separate zones, especially at night. Different areas should be operated separately for both ceiling lights and lamps, to make the room feel cosy for a few people or open and friendly when there is a larger group. Decorative lighting in the floor can create quite stunning divisions in spaces. n
