s a first-time visitor to Dresden, which has a population of over half a million residents, I am pleasantly surprised to find my hotel is in a quiet area, the entrance discreetly tucked in a building that defines one side of Neustadt Square. Only a few hardy souls are seated at the eateries nearby as I stroll through and enter the lobby.
“
I’m greeted by Lisa, who provides me with the perfect solution for my need of a light meal. Why not have room service? Vienna House QF only caters for breakfast, but they have an arrangement with the co-located Italian restaurant. Ever thoughtful Lisa has assessed my limited German vocabulary and slips next door to get an English menu. I opt for a tuna salad and before I have time to complete my unpacking it arrives, resplendent on a white starched tablecloth. In my initial scan of the room I’ve noted a welcome platter of skewered grapes drizzled with chocolate and, joy of joys, a beautiful white ceramic teapot with a choice of real tea leaves, so my meal is complete. The spacious feeling in my suite is intensified by the simplicity of the furnishings. I’m drawn to a chair which I later discover is the Dresden chair, especially designed for the hotel by its Italian architect and interior designer Lorenzo Bellini. the hotel works well, with any potential severity carefully softened by a neutral palette and warm accented lighting. While the décor is generally understated, my bathroom exudes quiet luxury, resplendent in Italian marble tiles. The following morning, after a breakfast that includes local specialties and robust coffee, I’m ready to begin exploring the city. With a glorious blue sky overhead, I begin at the Frauenkirche, almost next door to my hotel. This signature landmark of Dresden was destroyed during air raids in World War II, reduced to a 42-foot-high pile of rubble. For 40 years it was untouched. It became the centre of the East German peace movement in the 1980s, but it was not until 1994 that the church reconstruction began. By using original plans from 1726 and combining stones salvaged from the fire with new ones, its unique mosaic appearance distils the essence of the city. A small detour and I find myself at the Procession of Princes, the ancestral gallery of the House of Wettin, the dynasty that ruled Saxony. Painted on around 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, the

procession is 102 metres long and nine metres high, making it the largest porcelain picture in the world. Nearby Altmarkt (old market square) is the main square in the Old City. The reconstruction of this square began in the 1950s and retains reminders of Dresden’s socialist past. One side of the square is enclosed by the Palace of Culture, decorated with a mural called, “The path of the red flag”. Thirty metres long and ten metres high, it has recently been restored and is heritage listed. Altstadt is home to the famous Christmas market, where Stollen cake, which originated in Dresden, abounds. In the summer season, the area caters for some of the 4.4 million tourists who want casual outdoor dining on typical German fare, including bratwurst, potatoes and beer in abundance. On the western side of the square, the palace-style design is integrated in the Altmarkt Galerie shopping centre. No visitor could complain about a lack of opportunity for retail therapy here. Resisting the temptation to shop, I choose to indulge instead in the Saxon tradition of coffee and cake, to energise my wanderings.

The walk along Brühlsche Terrasse, an elevated riverside promenade on the northern edge of the Altstadt, provides a spectacular view of the River Elbe. Landing stages for boats offering half-day trips are dotted along the river and looking to the other side of the terrace, the views stretch from the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts to the Zwinger palace. The baroque style of this building is typically Dresden and reflects the love of pomp by Augustus the Strong, the former King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. It now houses the Old Masters Gallery, boasting one of the largest collections of European paintings worldwide, the Mathematical-Physical Salon and the Porcelain Collection, just three of more than 27 museums and exhibitions the city has to offer. A 257-step climb to the bell tower viewing platform of the Kreuzkirche rewards me with a panorama of the city, split by the River Elbe as it snakes its way to the North Sea. Later, crossing the river via the Augustus Bridge, I’m met by a golden equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong, and very gold he is, having been restored with 200 grammes of gold leaf. The avenue the statue presides over is a contrast to the Old City, with its wide boulevard style giving it an almost modern feel. My route then takes me to the refurbished Artisan Arcades. The small shops are inhabited by a range of artists and artisans, each one demanding attention. I am out of time and can only admire the exterior of the Japanese Palace, another baroque building, which was originally intended to house Augustus the Strong’s porcelain collection and is now the Ethnological Museum. In the evening, sipping wine at the hotel’s rooftop Dachbar, from where I can almost reach out and touch the Frauenkirche, I have time to reflect on this fascinating city. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the history and regeneration of the place, but it’s so much more than a reflection of its past – it’s a city that embraces the future. It’s a festival city and a centre for arts and culture, but it also encourages innovation and is home to a university specialising in nanotechnology. A few short days later at the railway station as I’m about to depart, I chat with some fellow travellers who have been attending a technology conference. “Isn’t this a fantastic city,” they exclaim. I certainly agree. Dresden was almost wiped off the map in the 1945 bombings, but it has restored itself with aplomb, striking the perfect balance between past and future. n

e Cannet, in the south of France, was once an area of great agricultural production – the Tivoli Gardens stand on former fields. Occupied since the Roman period, the town developed from the 15th century with the implantation of families coming from Italy at the request of the monks of Lérins. It separated from Cannes officially in January 1777, but has developed south, where its streets intertwine with Cannes. The charming, hilly commune is centred around the bustling Boulevard Carnot, with its elegant Belle Époque and Art Deco mansions. Side streets lined with delis and boutiques draw hip crowds who linger in open-air bistros and bars. Sheltered from the north wind by its backdrop of mountains, the weather here is dry and warm. This has earned Le Cannet the nickname “Madeira of France”. Classified nationally as a city of tourism and flowers, mimosa pines, eucalyptus, orange trees, and olive trees grow on the softly sloping hills, overlooking the bay of Cannes, with views of the islands of Lérins and the Esterel cliff road.
In the heart of Vieux Cannet, the old town, religious buildings abound, like the chapel Notre-Dame-desAnges. A Historical Monument, it dates from the middle of

the 16th century and reveals a rectangular nave. The Church of St Catherine of Alexandria also dates from the 16th century, with its decorated walls, two beautiful baroque altars and a vault decorated with 18th-century mufflers. The Saint-Bernardin Chapel, now an exhibition site, dates from the 16th century and has also been included in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments. Along the streets of Cannet, you can also spot the Saint-Sauveur chapel and its belfry, the Sainte-Philomène church of the early 20th century, and, built by the monks of Lérins in the middle of the 15th century, the tower of the Danys, which bears the name of one of the founding families of the commune. Other sights include the Calvys tower, an old 15th-century fortified house, the Wall of Lovers painted by Raymond Peynet, and the PierreBonnard space in an old Anglican church. Everywhere, art and culture abounds. Artisan studios line the historic Rue Saint-Sauveur, while Musée Bonnard displays works by Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard, and the façade of the Chapelle du Saint-Sauveur is decorated with frescoes by Expressionist artist Théo Tobiasse. Ten home staging tips Home staging is a great way to showcase a property and ensure it is seen in its best light. Professional home stagers are experienced in interior design, with specialist knowledge of how to sell a house. They work within client budgets to make interiors more appealing to buyers. To get a taste of what home stagers can offer, we asked experts from across the world to share their top tips.
1. Empty homes don’t always work Trish Pead of House In Order says it’s important to start with the basics. Before you think about the positioning and style of your furniture, it’s important to have some in the first place. “Always furnish and dress an empty property. Up to 85% of people are unable to visualise how a room will look if it’s not furnished,” says Trish. 2. Distance yourself Ideally, homeowners need to distance themselves from the house and look at it through an outsider’s eyes. “This can be very difficult for the seller as they are surrounded by their beloved personal items, but it can be the biggest stumbling block,” says Trish. “Personal clutter needs to be packed away and put into storage. Decluttering makes a property lighter and brighter and allows the potential buyer to visualise themselves living there.” 3. Don’t remove the personal warmth HouseWow CEO Anita Richardson says that while removing personal items is good, it is important homeowners don’t

take this to the extreme and strip a property of personal warmth. This could discourage potential buyers from generating positive feelings during their visit to the house. 4. Less can be more To maximise the use of space, Trish says: “Less is more when presenting a property. Too much furniture or very large pieces can make a room look small. The right presentation and small stylistic changes can highlight the positive aspects of a property and minimise the negatives.” 5. Decoration Suzy Maas, Founder of The Final Touch, says it’s important to think about the impression décor gives. “Harmonise and neutralise colour schemes to appeal to the majority of viewers. Make displays of pictures and ornaments neat, but try to inject a bit of creativity whenever you can.” Kimberly Ducate from Luxury Home Staging says that a fresh coat of paint will give homeowners a 150% return on their investment, making it a sensible and easy change to make.

Find the balance between neutral and boring Michelle Roberts of Homestaging Bath adds: “Although neutral tones undoubtedly sell, it doesn’t mean your home has to be dull or, at the other extreme, overly coordinated. The eclectic look is very much in, so find your inner creative and use accessories, lighting, textiles and artwork to add interest and colour, choosing a simple but striking palette to work within.” 7. Give rooms a function Always think about what kind of person will be buying your property and prepare it accordingly. A large family house may benefit from an area designated as a play area, whereas a small bachelor pad may benefit from an office area. If you have a room that is only used for storage, put a bed inside, so it has a clear function. 8. The outside view Don’t forget that some of your interiors can be seen from outside your house, so make sure it looks tidy from both viewpoints. “Think of how your curtains look from the outside, and make sure they are arranged neatly before a viewing,” says Suzy. 9. The biggest spend doesn’t always make the biggest impact “If you decide replacing things in your home isn’t cost-effective, there can be a way around it, such as painting cupboards and tiles in a neutral tone. Similarly, if floorboards are in reasonable condition, don’t replace them – instead, clean and varnish or paint them,” Michelle says. 10. Quality of interiors reflects on the perceived quality of the house Anita believes buyers can tell if finishings are of good quality or not and low-quality finishings reflect poorly on the property. “Master bedrooms must be hotel-quality finish with new pillows, duvets, bedding, colour-coordinated scatter cushions and floor-length curtains,” she says. n
