lmost before the ferry is moored, the passengers alight, disappearing through a tunnel signposted ‘Welcome to Sark’. With far less certainty, my boyfriend Elio and I gaze around the dusty port, noting the tiny ticket office and the lighthouse high up on the cliff. We wander through the tunnel just in time to see a tractor tugging a carriage full of people towards the unsealed Harbour Hill Road, wisps of dust rising in its wake. These are the only motorised vehicles on the island. It’s tractors, horses and carriages and bicycles from here on out. Moments later, Andrew Miller appears with a welcome smile. “Don’t worry,” he says, “the tractor is coming back to take you up the hill on a private ride.” Andrew, it seems, has connections. We soon discover, on an island with a population hovering around the 500 mark, everyone is connected. Andrew gave up his city job and moved permanently to Sark only recently, but he and his family have a long history here. Now, he runs a cottage industry – literally. He is the proud owner of Clos a Jaon, a former pair of cottages and barn that have been transformed into luxury accommodation. The gorgeous Sark granite structures are bright and airy inside, the décor and furnishings well thought out to enhance the open-plan design. Andrew’s next project is to launch a glamping site, with high-spec bell tents that focus on the glam element. Chez Nous, our home for the next few days, is part of his collection and features a host of thoughtful touches, like fresh eggs for breakfast and a chest containing board games. Sark is one of those places where people leave their doors unlocked and their bikes unchained. The island’s little barrel-roofed two-celled prison, the smallest jail in the world still in use, doesn’t see much action. We’re in Sark before peak season and it feels idyllic. It could be a tad warmer, but the sun makes an appearance in an impossibly blue sky every day, people nod in greeting as ➤➤

we ride past on our hired bicycles, and while not all of the restaurants have opened their doors for the season yet, there are enough dining options to ensure we won’t go hungry. Our days are filled with pedal-power exploration. Everything moves at a slower pace here, and we do too. We cycle until we run out of road and then we walk along the paths that lead to the coast. We make our way over the narrow isthmus known as La Coupée that leads to Little Sark. On both parts of the island the ‘sights’ are small: a Buddhist carving on a rock; a circle of stones called Sark Henge; a tidal pool on the edge of the ocean; the remnants of an old silver mine. The views, however, are immense. Rocky cliffs plunge to a cobalt sea, birds hover on the breeze, and blue and yellow wildflowers paint forest paths. The island is looking for a dairy farmer. Views like this make me wish I knew more about cows. One afternoon, we have tea and cake with the Seigneur — Sark’s head of state and a vestige of the island’s feudal past. Seigneur Christopher Beaumont, the 23rd Seigneur, and his wife Sarah are delightfully down to earth and while they are not blind to the island’s foibles, they have a clear affection for its laid-back ways. They are busy building an amphitheatre in the back yard of the Seigneurie near the walled garden, bringing opera to the island, and they have ideas for promoting Sark to a broader audience. Their enthusiasm is infectious. When I ask how immigration to Sark works, the Seigneur says, “Just move here.” Later that night, we take a seat at the fine-dining restaurant at Stocks Sark, which has a heavy focus on fresh local produce. ‘Sark local’ is defined as being sourced
from within a five-mile radius of the hotel, incorporating the exclusive three-mile territorial waters around Sark and the hotel’s own market garden, 250 metres from the back door of the kitchen. We feast on Sark lobster and cauliflower bisque, hand-dived Guernsey scallops, and Sark lamb and line-caught turbot, finishing off with a dark chocolate brownie and salted caramel fondant. The island certainly provides. Cycling home, with only small headlamps to light our way – there are no street lights on Sark – the cool air on cheeks flushed with wine is exhilarating. It’s a clear night and thousands of stars sparkle overhead – Sark was designated as the World’s first Dark Sky Island in January 2011 and with no light pollution, the sky seems endless. Enya wrote an album about it called ‘Dark Sky Island’, but the question is whether she ever really visited. If she didn’t, she missed out. All too soon, it’s time for us to leave. Reluctantly closing the door of Chez Nous, we stroll to the harbour. Waiting for the boat, Andrew tells us of a local legend that says if you throw a flower into the wake of the ferry as you leave, you’ll return to Sark. He hands us two perfectly formed yellow blooms and leaves the rest to us. Once onboard, the ferry swings around in a wide arc, preparing to trace a path to Guernsey. GA Catalunya Resort, in a superb setting north of Barcelona, was the first European Tour destination to achieve GEO Certified status in 2013, and it has continued building on its commitment to nature, resources and community. The resort has retained this status by focussing on reducing consumption and exploring opportunities for diversifying energy sources. Water is recycled throughout the estate and solar and geothermal energy sources have been implemented wherever possible. The introduction of Bermuda grass has reduced both water consumption and chemical use. Praised for its attention to detail and commitment to conserving the native flora and fauna of the pine forest on the 300-hectare estate, PGA Catalunya ensures residents and visitors gain maximum benefit from its outstanding setting. In southern Spain, Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa is at the forefront of European golf’s drive to become more eco-sustainable. The course is the first in Spain to feature a new environmentally friendly variety of dwarf Bermuda grass on all its greens, which has led to a 30% reduction in water usage. While there was minimum disruption for the players, the preparation behind the scenes was extensive. The grass was seeded by hand and, for 12 months, the new turf was nurtured under a supervised growing system before the process of re-laying the greens was undertaken. As well as needing less irrigation, the greens require fewer pesticides and less maintenance time. The uniform putting surface has received praise from club members and guests alike. The property was further rewarded, winning the 2018 IAGTO Sustainability Award for Resource Efficiency. Ignacio Soto, the Head Greenkeeper who supervised the process, noted the use of fewer pesticides. The greens need less fertilisation because they use nutrients from regenerated irrigation water in a more efficient way. Bermuda grass actively grows for nine months of the year, which improves the year-round playability of the course. ➤➤

“The greens are already in better condition than they have been in previous years and we expect them to get even better in 2019,” Soto says. Le Golf National, the iconic European Tour Properties venue close to Paris and Versailles, demonstrates how an approach that fosters nature and conserves resources enhances the running of a profitable, well-respected golf facility. The course has retained its GEO certification having demonstrated continuous improvement over the past three years. This has been achieved by upgrading resources, including installing a new storage reservoir and drainage that allows for recycling of rainwater. This, together with a new irrigation system and removing 16 hectares from the irrigated areas, has had a massive effect on water consumption. Additionally, 340 tonnes of material is recycled every year and sand from the ‘Paris beach’ is reused after summer for fairway top dressing. The reduction of maintained turf areas with habitat buffers and increased low-maintenance ecological rough areas is important to support natural habitats. There have been 350 flora and fauna species identified, including 70 birds; 13 of the identified species are rare and included on the red-list of threatened species. Much of the work done in the area of conservation and biodiversity has been in partnership with the Natural History Museum and the French Golf Federation across the range of habitats, which includes forest, wetland, open water, meadows and mineral landscape. The delicate balance needed to incorporate biodiversity is often achieved through working in partnership with private and public organisations. Le Golf National works in partnership with a private company and the museum to incorporate beehives to ensure pollination without risking a negative impact on the wild bee population. Le Golf National also recognises the importance of being a good corporate citizen and establishing positive community relationships. To this end, one of their projects has been collaborating with local government to restore the Porte de Merantais, an historic gate to the Palace of Versailles. Having attained silver level GEO certification, the highest currently held in France, the property is not resting on its laurels. New initiatives include concentrating on measuring ecological resilience after hosting big events, such as the Ryder Cup. Le Golf National has unique opportunities to engage in this, particularly with the Olympics in 2024. Paul Armitage, Director of Le Golf National, sums up the importance of retaining GEO certification, saying, “By proudly displaying the GEO flag every day, we show our customers, whether they are local golfers, international visitors or corporate groups, that we have the same environmental concerns as them.” n

t’s hard to believe The Bath House was completely dilapidated on purchase. The current owners have renovated this historic property extensively, turning it into a spectacular family home, complete with a bowling alley and home cinema. With a plethora of fun features, comfortable family living meets entertainment spectacularly well under this one roof. The Turkish Baths in St Leonards were built in 1875, but were only open for six years before closing due to competition in the area. Uplands girl’s school bought the building and built an extension to the rear, which housed a salt‑water swimming pool. The school later sold the building and, during the 1920s, it became a local community hall. During the war, St Leonards Parish Church was destroyed by a bouncing bomb, whereupon The Bath House became an emergency church for nearly ten years, playing host to numerous weddings and family occasions. It was bought in the 1950s and became a science glass factory until the late 1990s, when it fell into disrepair. In 2013, the current owners bought the derelict building and converted it into the spectacular family home it is today. From the moment you set foot through the front door, surrounded by stone work and exposed brick, this house impresses. The atmospheric reception hall, with wide oak floorboards, leads to a set of double doors, opening into a wondrous reception space beyond. The initial impact of this space is exactly that – the space on offer. It is hard not to be awe-struck by the bowling alley that runs down the side of the room, and there is a basketball hoop too. The owners have designed the room to encompass relaxed living and study spaces – tucked in the corner, there is a quiet, comfortable spot to settle in for some evening television viewing; in the middle, study areas contain cleverly designed storage; descending towards the kitchen, there is a formal dining space under modern lighting. Then, there is the kitchen. Hinting back to the days of glass making, the owners have designed the kitchen storage to repeat the industrial feel, with six industrial lockers, encompassing pantry-style storage facilities. The base units and surfaces are an eclectic mix of materials: metal units with glass shelves, along with copper touches and stone surfaces against wood-clad and exposed brick walls. Currently, appliances include a Cuisinemaster oven and an AEG extractor fan, a built-in dishwasher and space for an American-style fridge-freezer. Round the edge of the room are glimpses of the original tiling that bordered the swimming bath in days gone by. A wooden floor stretches across the centre and sits on top of the bathing pool, which now provides a deep storage area under the main reception room. Accessed via a wooden staircase from the kitchen, this enormous space has potential as another reception space, a child’s snug or a playroom. The ➤➤

ambience of the room is created by the enormous, glazed roof lantern, which stretches the length of the room, with roof windows opening upwards to display sky views. The wooden beams are spectacular and the roof lights bathe the living space with natural light throughout the day. Also from the kitchen area, an iron spiral staircase ascends to the first-floor mezzanine. This versatile space looks down onto the reception hall. The vendors use this area as a day bedroom, a space to hide away and read a book, or lie on a chaise longue and look up at the sky with reflections of the stained glass dancing around you. The master suite is a bedroom to buy for. Situated across the entire first floor, it utilises every inch of space, including industrial-themed wardrobe and storage space on the landing. Open the stained-glass double doors to enter this magnificent room, which also has a stunning nickel bath as a feature, next to the bed. There are windows to the front and rear with sea views. Behind the bed there is a double shower, low-level WC and a basin. The guest bedroom suite has a sash window to the front with a stone surround and wooden shutters. Wooden floors lead to Victorian-style en suite bathroom. A copper roll-top bath takes prime position, and there are twin sinks and a low-level WC. Tiled floor and walls tiled to half-height keep the character and a window provides light from the rear. The third bedroom has used out-of-the-box thinking to create a room that can sleep up to seven people, thanks to the carpentry of the fitted bed. Exciting for children to explore, the room is a real talking point, also featuring a sash window with stone surround to the front. Follow the signs to the ‘Box Office’ to discover the cinema room on the lower ground floor. The walls and floor are wooden, with some natural light entering the room from the front, so this room could also be utilised as a bedroom if desired. From the cinema room, enter through the ‘ship’s door’ to find the spacious utility and laundry room. The porthole in the rear wall reveals a secret tunnel, which leads to the swimming pool area under the reception room and kitchen. Outside, exiting through the side of the reception room, is a sun terrace, with glimpses of the turquoise ocean, the perfect place for morning coffee – and should the property not be entertainment enough, St Leonards is a vibrant seaside town with shops, restaurants and bars, and a beach on the doorstep. n
