News >F irst licensee in Thailand Once again venturing into uncharted territory for the brand, Fine & Country has signed its first licence in Thailand. Officially launching on the 1st of July, Fine & Country Thailand will be run by Managing Director Sean Barrett, who confirms Thailand is the second-largest economy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and is an upper-middleincome country with pro-investment policies. Aside from the beauty of the country and the selection of stunning properties on offer, Barrett believes these investment policies will further encourage buyers to look at Thailand as an optimal destination for investment.
buyers predominantly from Hong Kong, Scandinavia and the UK. The office will be focusing on properties that start at £650,000 and go up to £7 million. These are luxury villas in Phuket and Koh Samui, as well as some incredible apartments in Bangkok.
Barrett says the luxury market in the country is predominantly driven by overseas investment, which means there is pent-up demand due to travel restrictions, which he anticipates will result in an active market once travel resumes. In recent news, Phuket is opening to visitors with no need for quarantine. Initially this only applies to fully vaccinated travellers but it is a huge step in the right direction.
Fine & Country Thailand currently has a team of 14 on the ground and is looking to increase this over the next 12 months to 30. The office is in Royal Phuket Marina, with plans to open a second office in Bangkok within three months. “Our team is highly skilled in selling prime and super prime properties to high-net-worth individuals from across the globe,” Barrett comments. “We are in the early days and already the brand has been received amazingly well in Thailand. We had over 26 listings before our official opening and aside from clients loving our approach to marketing, our global coverage with key locations in Hong Kong, Germany and, of course, London have been of huge appeal. This initial success is testament to the global power of the Fine & Country brand.”

>C annes Film Festival makes a return Fine & Country Cannes has reported that the Cannes Film Festival has returned, attracting an array of celebrities and international travellers to the region. After a year of absence, Le Festival du Film and the red carpet made their return to Cannes for its 74th edition. Each evening, the rise of the steps was illuminated, thanks to the parade of stars under the flashes of the photographers present. Elegant men and women, dressed to the nines, came to attend the film screenings in the competition for the Palme d’Or, with a jury of exception chaired by Spike Lee. This year, an open-air cinema was set up on the public beach next to the festival palace, screening some of the films for free, like the new Fast & Furious. During this festival, the critics’ week and the directors’ fortnight were also present, looking to discover new talent. These events attract an international clientele. >O ver £60,000 donated in Spring Grant Programme In March, The Fine & Country Foundation opened the application process for the Spring Grant Programme. After having to cancel the autumn round in 2020 due to the restrictions on fundraising, the Fine & Country network was more determined than ever to replenish the pot and make sure a life-changing amount could be granted this time around. The Foundation awarded over £60,000 to 26 charities across the UK and internationally – the most projects it has ever funded in one grant scheme. A
golfing holiday is not for everyone. What happens, though, if a keen golfer wants to travel with a less-keen companion? A compromise will be needed… or will it? Combining a golfing holiday with the excitement a city offers is easy with European Tour Destinations. If your fancy is of a more romantic bent, Le Golf National could fit the bill. Situated 60 kilometres from Charles de Gaul airport and 29 kilometres from Orly, it is ideally placed to enjoy the cultural and gourmet highlights of Paris. It is bisected by the Avenue de Paris and boasts a range of markets, museums and gourmet experiences that rival other French destinations. With three courses you can also choose your golf experience at Le Golf National. If you are short of time, the smaller 7-hole L’Oiselet course offers an excellent training option to hone your skills. rance is home to a plethora of chateaux – so many that it can be overwhelming determining which of these beauties to visit. Here are our top picks.
entombed. King Francois I invited the ageing da Vinci to Amboise in early 1516 and he spent the final years of his life at the nearby Clos Lucé manor house.
1. Château de Chenonceau Nestled in the greenery of the Loire Valley, the Château de Chenonceau epitomises a fairy-tale French castle. The unusual architecture of the building is a highlight, as it juts out above the River Cher. The renaissance beauty, with its turrets, towers and grandiose gardens, is the second-most visited castle in France after Versailles.
A self-guided tour through the château highlights its collection of Renaissance and Gothic furniture. There are a number of paintings of French royalty and some interesting tapestries.
The castle also has a rather titillating history – it was once home to King Henry II, his wife Catherine de Medici and mistress Diane de Poitiers, who we imagine made rather awkward housemates. Over the centuries, the château has been heavily influenced by its female inhabitants, who built, embellished, protected, restored and saved it. For this reason, it is also known as Le Château des Dames (the castle of ladies). The château is now home to a magnificent collection of art, including embroidered 16th-century tapestries and masterpieces by Rubens and Tintoretto, but the gardens are also a major draw. There is also a restaurant on the grounds, the Orangerie Café, built in what was once the stables. 2. Château d’Amboise The UNESCO World Heritage Royal Château of Amboise, generally abbreviated to Château d’Amboise, also has a rich history and can easily be paired with Chenonceau – although it’s wise not to visit more than one château per day. The château sits atop a hill, towering over the small town with which it shares its name. Château d’Amboise dates back to the 11th century. It was originally built as a fortress, but the monarchy took ownership of the property in the mid-15th century and over the next century and a half, it become a favoured residence of French royalty. By the 17th century, however, its fortunes turned and a period of decline began, with the castle abandoned, used as a prison, and nearly destroyed during the French Revolution. Thankfully, it has endured and it is now the most-visited palace in the Loire Valley. In addition to the château, there are the beautiful terraced gardens of Amboise and the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, where Leonardo da Vinci is
The tour also takes you to the top of the Minimes Tower, one of two spiral turrets, and the pinnacle of any visit, as the views from here over the river Loire and the valley are spectacular. 3. Château de Chambord Although Château de Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley and sits a mere two hours from Paris, it was never meant to be a royal palace. It was built as a hunting lodge by Francis I – the estate is surrounded by forest and accounts for as much land mass as Paris. The King built it to provide an opportunity for him to be closer to his mistress. Ultimately, however, he spent little time here, as no thought was given to heating the rooms for longer periods, meaning dreadfully cold winter temperatures in the 400-odd high-ceilinged rooms. Francis I commissioned it to look like the skyline of Constantinople. This explains the façade, which is more than 128 metres long with 800 sculpted columns and an elaborately styled roofline. The original design was created by Italian architect Domenico da Cortona, but Leonardo da Vinci reputedly also had his hand in it. He was in the area after all. When WWII began, the castle was used as something akin to an art vault, where the national treasures of Paris and the North of France were stored for safekeeping, including pieces from the Louvre and other museums. For years, the Mona Lisa remained here in the cold, until she was relocated back to the Louvre post-war. As impressive as the exterior of the Château de Chambord is, the inside is equally magnificent. One of the highlights is the three-storey, double-helix staircase in the centre of the keep.

4. Château de Vaux le Vicomte As the King’s principal architect, Louis Le Vau had already erected a number of Parisian mansions when Nicolas Fouquet, the French finance minister in the early years of the reign of Louis XIV, called on his services in 1653. Considered the greatest ambassador of the Italianate style of architecture in France, Le Vau also drew inspiration from classical antiquity. Working with Andre Le Notre as landscape designer and Charles Le Brun as painter/decorator, Le Vau is credited with developing the French Classical style and, in doing so, establishing the foundations of French architecture for the next 150 years. It all started here, 34 miles southeast of Paris, at Château de Vaux le Vicomte. Interestingly, to expand the castle grounds, Fouquet bought and demolished three neighbouring villages. The villagers - all 18,000 of them - were rumoured to subsequently have been hired as labour and to maintain the gardens. The lavishness of the château was ultimately Fouquet’s downfall – King Louis XIV was led to believe the château was built using misappropriated public funds. Fouquet was imprisoned for embezzlement, the château was sold, and Louis XIV sent the design team to work on Versaille and confiscated all the fine furniture and art, even digging up the plants in the garden.
monarch’s palace; it was a ‘family home’ for the kings of France, passed down from generation to generation from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Former residents include Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and Napoleon I. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, the château has more than 1,500 rooms, gorgeous artworks and stunning gardens to explore. here’s more to Germany than its major metropolises. Take Soest, located around 50 kilometres east of Dortmund, for example. The capital of the district bearing the same name is small, with just under 50,000 residents, but it’s a delightful spot, surrounded by forests and lakes, ideal for outdoor pursuits. It is recorded as one of the oldest towns in the region – it is believed to have been inhabited for over 4,000 years – and is often considered to be one of the most beautiful. In fact, the entire district has much to offer, nestled between the northern Sauerland hills and the lowlands of the Hellweg, once an important medieval trade route. This may just be the perfect spot for those with an interest in architecture, history and nature. Once a major trading hub, Soest has maintained its medieval-to-Renaissance outline, rather than expanding and modernising. Around two thirds of the city’s medieval walls still exist, drawing a rough circle around the city. Both the walls and the churches in the Old Town are constructed from green sandstone quarried in the region, giving this part of town a unique appearance. In addition, there are several hundred half-timbered houses dating from the 15th to 19th century, providing a picturesque, old German townscape that attracted a number of prominent artists, including Wilhelm Morgner, Eberhard Viegener and Arnold Topp. Bruno Paul – a pioneer of modern architecture from the early 1900s – created three city villas there between 1928 and 1931. Medieval churches, Renaissance paintings and several high-quality museums are therefore prominent among the historic and cultural offerings of Soest.
