There’s something inherently romantic about train travel. Here are six of the best across the globe covering short, medium and long-distance journeys.
Travelling eastwards from Zermatt, the day-long trip covers 91 tunnels and 291 bridges as it rolls through southern Switzerland, with its chocolate-box hamlets, alpine meadows and pristine mountain lakes. Highlights of the journey include Oberalp Pass – the highest point on the ride at 6,706 feet – and the Landwasser Viaduct, a magnificent six-arch feat of engineering, standing at around 200 feet and plunging into a tunnel cut straight into the mountainside.
The Trans-Siberian Railway connects east and west across the breadth of Russia, from Moscow over the Ural Mountains, across the magnificent and endless steppe and through dense Siberian forest, alongside the shore of the world’s largest freshwater lake. It connects the capital with Vladivostok in the east on an incredible seven-day journey that takes passengers by landmarks including the magnificent 3,227ft bridge that crosses the River Ob at Russia’s third-largest city, Novosibirsk, and the blue depths of Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world. It is among the longest rail routes in the world, running for a whopping 577 miles and there’s a lot of on-train time, so prepare to kick back and absorb spectacular scenery for hours on end. And if that doesn’t sate your thirst for train travel, there’s the opportunity to continue on through Mongolia and China.

The clickety clack soundtrack, the picturesque landscapes that pass by the windows, and the friendships you forge on board add up to a unique adventure, wherever you may travel. These are the journeys that top our list.
Nowadays, the most popular section is a mere two hours of travel one way between Kanchanaburi, where the station sits close to the Bridge over the River Kwai, and Hellfire Pass. It traverses deep into the jungle, rocking along wooden trestles, passing rice paddies as it bats away low-hanging branches. Despite its sombre history, it’s a fascinating ride.
It may be nicknamed The Death Railway, but this is due to its dark World War II roots, rather than its safety record. Originally called the Thailand-Burma Railway, it earned its nickname through the deaths of over 100,000 labourers, some of whom were prisoners of war, during its 16-month construction between 1942 and 1943. Once completed, it stretched 250 miles from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma.
The romantic-sounding Glacier Express is the very picture of Christmas in winter, but the summer journey is just as picturesque, winding its way through spectacular mountainous landscapes between the two most spectacular mountain resorts in Switzerland – Zermatt and St Moritz. The Glacier Express is the most relaxing way to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Swiss Alps.

Long Distance: Rovos Rail’s Namibian Safari – Namibia Rovos Rail’s Namibia Safari is perhaps a lesser-known luxury train trek that spans some 2,000 miles, passing some of the most spectacular scenery the Southern African region has to offer. The train departs from Pretoria and takes passengers into Kimberley, a former diamondrush town that’s home to Big Hole, one of the largest hand-dug mines in the world. It then traverses the Northern Cape and Fish River Canyon, second in size only to the Grand Canyon. Guests continue across the untamed beauty of the Kalahari Desert to a cheetah conservation project, before stopping in Windhoek, the lively capital of Namibia. Then it’s a short flight to Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert for an overnight stay, followed by a night in the game-rich Etosha National Park and finishing at Swakopmund, a perfectly preserved German Hansa town on the Namibian coast. It is simply spectacular.
The Rocky Mountaineer is undeniably popular with rail enthusiasts, covering three main routes across the Canadian Rockies. Covering the spectacular Canadian scenery of southern British Columbia between Vancouver and Banff, the Rocky Mountaineer’s two-day First Passage to the West has to be one of the most picturesque train rides in North America. Highlights include viewing the wild waters of Hell’s Gate in Fraser Canyon, named for explorer Simon Fraser’s assertion that “surely these are the gates of Hell”, and the twin rail bridges of Cisco Crossing. The journey starts with an overnight stay in the lakeside city of Kamloops, before rising over the Canadian Rockies and arriving at Banff. Rocky Mountaineer travels during the day only, and features oversized windows throughout the all-dome fleet, as well as an outdoor viewing area in each coach, from which to admire the incredible beauty of this part of the world.

The Ghan is Australia’s best-known contribution to the world of epic rail journeys. Named after the Afghan cameleers who helped explore and build infrastructure in Australia’s remote interior from the 1860s to the early 20th century, The Ghan travels between Darwin in the Northern Territory and Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, traversing the country’s red centre. The scenery ranges from tropical gorges to dusty red earth and rolling green hills on a multi-day adventure that covers 1,851 miles. More than a train journey, The Ghan includes Off Train Experiences, where guests disembark to explore locales including Katherine Gorge, Alice Springs and, when travelling north to south, the opal-mining town of Coober Pedy. It’s a special way to connect with the Australian outback.

Golf, with its unique handicap system, allows players of all abilities to compete against each other and this also goes some way to facilitating accessibility.
EDGA, the European Disabled Golf Association, is a notfor-profit, volunteer organisation that is active in the promotion and delivery of opportunities to sample, participate and compete in golf. The organisation has been working in this space for more than 22 years, but it is really over the past 10 years that its effectiveness has come to the fore. With more National Federations taking their responsibilities to be inclusive and diverse seriously, EDGA can see that change is happening. Education providers are ensuring that coaches at all levels are better prepared, and golf facilities are becoming increasingly aware of the needs of golfers with a disability (GwD). The sector is developing quickly. With players from all of the International Paralympic Committee’s identified eligible impairment groups, players with a comprehensive range of disabilities are finding the game and all it has to offer.

There are other considerations that make golf ideal as an accessible sport, too. In golf, the ball is stationary, so players with a visual impairment or a physical impairment that restricts or inhibits movement have the time to prepare. Regardless of ability, gender, age or ethnicity, every golfer needs to take a club to hit a ball to a target that may be near or far.
The G4D Tour, a collaboration between the DP World Tour, EDGA and the European Tour’s Golf for Good initiative, is one example of the changes. The expanded G4D Tour was announced in February 2022 and is fast becoming the premier series of events for GwD. With seven events slated across the year, the first three of which have already taken place, the season is quickly heading towards the grand finale at the DP World Tour Championship in November in TenDubai.players from the World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability (WR4GD) are invited to play each G4D Tour event and the tournaments are closely linked to DP World Tour tournaments, playing on the same course during the same tournament week.
With more and more golf venues considering accessibility in their design, golfers with a disability are able to enjoy all of the physical, social and wellbeing benefits the game offers. Evidence-based research reveals that golfers with disability are finding other positives in the game that science is still getting to grips with. In the case of players who have acquired an impairment through a traumatic accident, it is often not only a physical or sensory loss but also a loss of identity. Golf can help establish a new identity, one that redefines an individual not as a disabled person, but as a golfer.

olf is a unique sport, in that each player has his or her own ball, meaning control of one player’s performance by another is impossible. Take tennis for example; the stronger player often controls the ball and, as such, limits or controls their opponent’s performance. This is true of so many sports and can limit participation by players with any kind of impairment. Golf, however, is a sport played solo in many ways, as it is without interference or impact from the opposing players.
The G4D Tour is raising awareness of golf as a sport that is inclusive in nature and can be played by people of all abilities. The benefits that more than 66 million registered golfers worldwide enjoy are available to everyone who wants to pick up a club. That’s just the way it should be - a sport for all. n
The 2022 G4D Tour scheduled events are being held in six different countries. The stars of G4D teed off their season at The Belfry in England, after which the tour landed in Germany for the first time. Mount Juliet Estate hosted ahead of the Horizon Irish Open and August saw Galgorm Resort in Northern Ireland hosting the tour. The G4D Tour will visit Wentworth Club for the first time this year, ahead of the prestigious BMW PGA Championship, before taking on Spain’s Real Club Valderrama for the first time. Once again, the season will culminate at the G4D Dubai Finale ahead of the final Rolex Series event of 2022, the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, where the qualifiers from the previous six events will battle it out at Jumeirah Golf Estates. It’s clear that G4D has made significant steps over the last decade. In a world that too often teaches us to look away from anything or anyone different, people with disability can easily feel excluded. The opportunity to engage in sport can be life-changing. For some, their experiences in golf can create memories that last a lifetime.

In July 2022, at the 150th Open Championship, four GwD took part in the Champions Celebration, a four-hole opening to what is, for many, the world’s most prestigious championship. Former Open Champions Tiger Woods, Sir Nick Faldo and women’s Open Champions Dame Laura Davies and Georgia Hall, amongst a host of other champions, played. Tens of thousands of on-site spectators, and many more in front of their screen of choice, had their eyes, which so often look away, focussed directly on the golfers with a disability. This can only be a good thing.

Quinta Patiño comes with a story. It was built in the 1950s for Bolivian tycoon Antenor Patiño, hence its moniker. Antenor’s father, Simon Patiño, was known as “The King of Tin’’, but things weren’t always that way. In a true rags to riches story, Simon struck it rich after being granted a mine as payment for a debt by a Portuguese prospector. The family rode mules into the mountains and spent years digging for ore until he came across a lode of tin and, by 1910, he was a millionaire. Inheriting much of this wealth, Antenor was considered one of the richest men in the world at one time. He maintained homes in Europe and North America, including an apartment on Fifth Avenue and another on Avenue Foch in Paris. Antenor fell in love with the hills around Estoril when visiting the marquise of Castéja in the 1950s. The regions had been a hotspot for European royalty since the 18th century. It was known as a “golden exile” – a haven for European nobles and aristocrats escaping their wartorn countries. The current 7.66-acre property was originally a 124-acre farm estate, comprising a number of property lots. Antenor purchased and combined these lots, building his palace where the view was the most spectacular and sparing no expense. The result was an exquisite Portuguese summer residence, distinctly 18th century in style, despite being built in 1957. ➤➤

This concept was not restricted to the Romans and Greeks; it was widely practiced all over the world. In fact, cultures rooted in the Arab nations and Japan became famous for it. Even nowadays, we visit these places and marvel at the sensorial experience. Why then did humanity steer away from these design guidelines and decide the best course of action was to become bees in beehives? The answer is easy enough – the industrial revolution and overpopulation of the cities. It warms the heart that in the last few decades, architects and interior designers have decided to join forces and initiate a return to nature, in different, more modern ways. For those lucky enough, back gardens or internal patios have been favoured over yet another lightless room. For those a little less blessed with space, we have seen more frequent use of vertical gardens, bigger windows to let the light in, and “winter gardens” have become a popular option to be able to enjoy a protected outdoor space for flats in the middle of the city.
Sustainability has also had a significant impact on interior design, leading to a more conscious approach to our health. In the modern era, we look out for more natural materials: real stones, cotton and linen fabrics, natural surfaces like wood, woven rattans and sisals. And, if not natural, recycled is often favoured over new and Furnituremass-produced.anddecorative objects have become organic in shape, softer to the eye and plush to the touch, with an obvious Scandinavian influence and Hygge philosophy.
Having said that, even in the most formal and traditional townhouses and manors, we are seeing this tendency, interpreted in a different vernacular, such as Arts and Crafts furniture or landscaping mural wallpapers in the most formal areas.
To avoid leaving a space clinical and empty, people are opting for open and airy rooms filled with natural and organic shapes and materials and with a plant in each corner. This is hardly surprising as humanity turns back to its origin. If we cannot surround ourselves with nature, we will try to emulate it in the spaces we buy as our homes and the pieces we fill those homes with. We know, even at a subconscious level, that our blood pressure lowers, and we are filled with a sense of calm. This, in turn, allows us to sleep better, to feel better and, in the end, to feel happier in our lives. n
