Record-breaking events

Fine & Country Golf recently joined a selection of prestigious brands in hosting the BMW PGA Championship Village, which included big names such as Jumeirah Golf Estates, Emirates Airlines, BMW, Mini, Lindt and Rolex. Fine & Country exhibited a selection of stunning golfing homes that are on the market throughout the UK and abroad to an engaged golfing audience. Those who visited the stand were able to enquire about Fine & Country, its UK and international network of estate agents, the bespoke golf division and the partnership with European Tour Properties and Troon Golf.

The event broke all previous attendance records with 19,123 attending the Celebrity Pro-Am day, when celebrities including One Direction’s Niall Horan, and footballers Phil Neville and Paul Scholes also took to the course. Thursday also saw record-breaking numbers, with 20,956 guests travelling to Wentworth to be present for the first official day of the tournament.

This year’s BMW PGA Championship set records galore over the six-day event at Wentworth Golf Club, Surrey. Fine & Country Golf exhibited at the club for the first time with the event seeing record crowds of 113,640 in attendance. The week promised an exhilarating tournament of golf and did not disappoint for the crowds attending. Spectators were treated to five holes in one, a BMW PGA Championship record, and an outstanding final day of golf from Byeong-Hun An which saw him take his first European Tour title and finish 21 under par.

Capital expansion A new Fine & Country office opened in Sydenham, South East London on Monday 1 June, 2015. The new office joins the global network of over 300 offices worldwide, representing the brand’s rapid expansion in the country’s capital. This news comes just weeks after an office opened in Cockfosters, North London, and

several months after the launch of the Fine & Country Fulham office in West London. Fine & Country London South East, Fine & Country’s fifth London office, will specialise in the sale of properties in the upper quartile of the market in South London. The new office has been established by reputable independent agency, Wooster & Stock, and will be led by Luke Wooster, Luke Bishop and Zoe Matheson. The agency is known for its fresh and modern approach to estate agency and its enthusiasm for innovative marketing. The office will be located within the existing Wooster & Stock office located at 110 Kirkdale, Upper Sydenham. Going for gold Fine & Country held its annual International Conference on 3 July, 2015 at the Millennium Hotel in Mayfair, near Fine & Country’s International Headquarters on Park Lane. With over 150 attendees representing offices throughout the UK, Europe and South Africa, the International Conference followed the theme ‘Back to the Future’, as attendees looked at estate agency and the Fine & Country brand in the past, present and future. The International Conference was followed by an ‘80s-themed gala dinner and awards ceremony. The Fine & Country Awards recognise the offices that have gone above and beyond in providing an excellent service. “This year’s conference was our best to date with engaging, relevant and motivating content,” says Fine & Country’s David Lindley. “The back-to-the-future message was fully embraced by all those attending. The presentations transported attendees into the future of estate agency and provided guidance into how Fine & Country can embrace change to stay ahead of the competition.”

A fine match On Sunday 5 July, Fine & Country welcomed nearly 4,000 attendees to watch 14 teams compete in the seventh Fine & Country Gold Cup at Dallas Burston Polo Club. In typical British style, attendees munched on picnics and sipped Pimms as they watched Rigby & Rigby claim the winning title.

Fine & Country Ascot opened in July, representing the brand’s expansion in the south east of England. The new office has been established by Basil Samaan who, along with Sales Manager Peter Nicholls, brings more than 50 years of combined experience in the estate agency industry. The event has grown exponentially over the years and is now established as a distinguished date in the calendar, featuring the shopping village with local exhibitors, as well as Dallas Burston Polo Club’s new Champagne Laurent-Perrier bar, situated on the Clubhouse terrace. The bouncy castle in the children’s area also saw a lot of action. Attendees donated their car parking fee to the Fine & Country Foundation which is dedicated to fighting homelessness. In total the Foundation raised £5,600 in charitable donations.

Finally, after years of flat growth and false dawns, the Marbella property market is moving forward again. Enquiries, client numbers and purchases are set to be record-breaking for the first half of 2015. he Hungarian Capital of Budapest is undeniably one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The city’s extensive World Heritage Site includes the banks of the Danube River, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes’ Square and the Millennium Underground Railway, the second-oldest metro line in the world. Besides this, it features around 80 geothermal springs, the world’s largest thermal water cave system, the second-largest synagogue, and third-largest Parliament building. There’s much to be admired on a stroll through both Buda and Pest, divided by the Danube. The city attracts about 4.4 million visitors a year, and I’m one of them.

Catching a glimpse of the Neo-classical façade of The Corinthia Hotel Budapest, I’m immediately transported into an era of historical glamour that befits a city with such a stunning architectural heritage. The hotel sits regally on the Grand Boulevard, the main artery of the Hungarian capital, a site it has commanded since 1896 albeit under the name Grand Hotel Royal. The interior, however, is of another era altogether. Reconstructed in 1956 after a fire destroyed the roof, and reinvented by Corinthia after falling into disrepair, Corinthia Hotel Budapest re-emerged in 2003 like a phoenix rising resplendent from the ashes.

Since reopening, the Grande Dame of a hotel has attracted the stars, who wallow in the luxury of its palatial Ferenc Liszt Presidential Suite. A trawl through the hotel’s guest book is like dipping into a ‘Who’s Who’ of music, movies, fashion and sport, from burlesque performer Josephine Baker to Ella Fitzgerald and Sean Connery. On entrance, it’s easy to see why the hotel draws the rich and famous. The understated opulence of the 1930’s styled lobby is just the start. A glass atrium allows natural light to filter in to the gleaming white space, and the staff is quick to welcome guests into the embrace of the hotel. I’m immediately whisked to the executive floor and handed the keys to one of the signature suites, adjacent to the presidential suite. I may not be royalty, but I’m certainly made to feel special in this expansive space, with its luxurious Super King size bed, separate living room, dining room, kitchen and glorious marble bathroom. As gorgeous as it all is, I have a city to explore, so I tear myself away from comfort and exit the hotel for a stroll down to the Danube. It takes a while to arrive at the river – not because it’s a lengthy walk, but rather, because there are so many sights to take in on the way. I wander by the Moorish Revival-style Dohány Street Synagogue and admire St. Stephen’s Basilica, where crowds of visitors in the cobbled square wave their cameras at the picturesque church building. I amble through green spaces, where groups of people congregate in the sun, dawdling as I admire the immense buildings lining Liberty Square. Budapest is a city made for walking. It’s busy, but not crowded, and it feels safe and welcoming. Close to the river, it’s the 1904 Hungarian Parliament Building that takes my breath away. The largest building in Hungary and the equal-highest building in Budapest – along with St Stephens Basilica

– the multi-spired Gothic Revival edifice has a symmetrical façade and a central dome that overlooks the water. The ornate structure looks like it has been plucked from a fairytale, and pleasure boats and river cruisers chug slowly past its immensity, passengers crowded on the decks to admire the view. To appreciate the structure in its entirety I’m going to have to cross the river. Following the gentle curve of the riverbank, I collide with a memorial honouring the Jews killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II. In remembrance of those who were ordered to take off their shoes before they were shot at the edge of the water, a line of 60 pairs of cast iron shoes sit on the verge. Tea candles flicker in some, others sport a single red flower. It’s a powerful reminder of a tragic moment in history, conceived by film director Can Togay and sculptor Gyula Pauer. Lost in the moment, I quietly wander to the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, which spans the Danube, allowing crossing from Pest to Buda, on the western side. Designed by British engineer William Tierney Clark, this was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary, and was opened in 1849, although it has been reinforced since. Stone lions guard the cast iron suspension bridge in all its magnificence and the views along the river are spectacular. There’s a short funicular that transports sightseers to Buda Castle, but the long line forces me to walk up the steep incline, giving my thighs a workout. Perched on top of Castle Hill, this area is thronged with visitors and market stalls and I can’t resist a keepsake, purchasing a locally-made pendant on my way to the Halászbástya, otherwise known as the Fisherman’s Bastion. neo-Romanesque-style terrace wrapped around Matthias Church offers panoramic views of Budapest, making it the perfect point at dusk, as the city’s lights flicker to life. Before long, the Parliament building glows a brilliant gold, reflected back on the inky surface of the river as dusk turns to night. After a sound sleep and a lengthy breakfast at Corinthia Hotel Budapest – the volume of breakfast choices encourages lingering – I’m ready to tackle the city once more. I catch the Metro to Heroes’ Square, with its iconic statue complex featuring the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars and other important national leaders, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. From here, I enter City Park for a stroll around the pond to the gleaming yellow Széchenyi thermal bath, where bathers lounge around heated pools fed by two thermal springs. I consider a dip, but Corinthia Hotel Budapest’s Royal Spa is calling, so instead I hasten back to the hotel.

As I depart Corinthia Hotel Budapest, weaving my way through the city to the airport, one word lingers in my mind. The city, the architecture, the landmarks, the hotel and the cuisine are intertwined in my mind into one “grand” experience. The Royal Spa’s 15-metre pool encourages relaxation, and I slip in and out of the surrounding steam baths and sauna before my spa appointment. The deep muscle massage leaves me deliciously limp, the ESPA oils wafting a pleasant scented as I drift back to my suite for an evening at rest.

Before I depart, I have time for lunch at the hotel’s Brasserie and Atrium Restaurant, with its soaring glass ceiling. The Caesar Salad Soup has me intrigued, but I can’t ignore the duo of grilled asparagus with goat cheese, poached quail eggs and lemon mayonnaise. It’s everything it should be and more, the goat cheese ball perched on top of the fresh asparagus stems, drizzled with mayonnaise, and the egg adds a bright burst of yellow when I slice into its tenderness. The main of mangalica tenderloin, a Hungarian pork, is cooked sous vide, sealing in the succulent flavours, and is complemented with servings of pickled strawberries, baby fennel and pommes duchesse. I shouldn’t have dessert, but I can’t resist the milk chocolate caramel slice with salted hazelnut and chocolate sauce. It’s worth every creamy mouthful.

FROM BRUNEL TO BANKSY TO THE REVAMPED HARBOUR AND A THRIVING MUSIC SCENE, THE GRITTY CITY OF BRISTOL IS ON THE UP-AND-UP. GISELLE WHITEAKER EXPLORES THE WEST COUNTRY’S CAPITAL. We’re holding first-class tickets on the First Great Western service to Bristol, giving us access to the First Great Western Lounge. Relaxing over coffee while we wait to board, I realise that I have no mental image of England’s sixth largest city and the departure point of John Cabot on his way to claiming the title of the first European to land at North America in 1497. Neither my mother, Judy, or I have been there before. That’s a good enough reason to go and see what the port city has to offer. We’re pleasantly surprised when the First Great Western train pulls in to Bristol Temple Meads Station. Originally opened in 1840, the majority of this impressive structure is Grade I Listed. Naturally, it’s been expanded and refurbished in the intervening years, but the façade continues to reflect the railways’ monumental style at the start of the heyday of train travel. It’s a fitting introduction to Bristol’s collection of architecture, including 51 Grade I Listed buildings, 500 Grade II* Listed and over 3,800 Grade II Listed

buildings. The city even has its own unique architectural style developed in the mid-19th Century – Bristol Byzantine – and several hardy examples endure, resisting both the heavy bombing during the Bristol Blitz and the passage of time. A short bus ride and we’re at the revitalised harbour quarter, checking in to The Bristol Hotel. A Doyle Collection Hotel, the four-star establishment is right on the waterfront, in the heart of a thriving restaurant, nightlife and arts scene. A quick coffee in the comfortable lounge and we’re ready to start our exploration, orienting ourselves with a stroll around the neighbourhood. We cross Queen Square, where a festival is being set-up, before circling back to the riverfront. On the far side of Pero’s Bridge, we amble past many of the city’s popular watering holes, detouring into Millennium Square, dotted with recycled-art projects including a massive whale sculpture made of willow and 70,000 plastic bottles, designed to mark the city’s status as recipient of the 2015 European Green Capital Award.

Back on the riverbank, we catch a glimpse of Brunel’s SS Great Britain across the water’s expanse, the masts of the former passenger steamship, the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic, belying its location. We continue along the walking path around the harbour and stumble across a work of Banksy’s, the 2014 Girl with the Pierced Eardrum. It’s oddly beautiful in its back alley location and inspires us to seek out more of the street artist’s work, in what is widely believed to be his home town. Circling around the Cumberland Basin more artistry is visible, this time in the form of a horizon of brightly coloured Victorian terraced houses lined up on the hill overlooking the river in the suburb of Totterdown. Eventually, we reach the gates protecting the SS Great Britain, now closed for the night. Paying 80 pence to skip back across the waterway, we pop in to Brigstow Lounge, a relative newcomer to Bristol’s dining scene. It’s relaxed and friendly and the contemporary dishes are beautifully presented, simple, yet exquisitely flavoured. It’s rare to find food this good by chance. After licking the final smears of the stewed rhubarb and chocolate mousse dessert from our spoons, we depart for the brief walk back to The Bristol Hotel, with shared smiles at our serendipity. After a comfortable night’s sleep, a quick gym workout, and a filling breakfast, we’re ready to explore the city further. The weather is not playing along. The skies are grey and rain is bucketing down, washing the streets and those who dare walk them. Undeterred, we borrow enormous umbrellas from The Bristol Hotel’s reception desk and splash through the puddles on a self-guided tour of Banksy’s street art. Banksy’s infamous The Grim Reaper, was originally painted on the side of the Thekla Social boat moored in Bristol harbour. Now, to protect it from wear and tear, it is housed in M Shed, as is a fascinating collection of 3,000 eclectic artefacts that tell an insider history of Bristol. It’s minutes away from The Bristol Hotel, but our toes are already damp by the time we enter the former dockside transit shed. We’re aiming to find The Grim Reaper and depart, but we get sidetracked – it’s that kind of place. It takes quite some time for us to re-emerge in readiness for our next work of art. Art, a store primed for browsing, with objects ranging from food to homewares to artwork displayed over its three floors. Further up the road is the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. Banksy’s Paint Pot Angel, a statue of an angel with a pink paint tin upended on her head, was placed in the front hall of the museum for the 2009 ‘Banksy versus the Bristol Museum’ exhibition. The exhibition is long gone, but the angel remains, underneath a Bristol Biplane replica hanging from the ceiling that was made in 1963 for the film Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines.

Our next target is Stokes Croft, an area known for its plethora of street art. Here our navigation skills fail, leading us through a few leafy suburbs on an extended route, before we are faced with The Mild, Mild West. This Banksy piece depicts a huge, smiling teddy bear with a Molotov cocktail in his paw, facing three policemen holding up riot shields. There are plenty of up-and-coming graffiti artists at work in this neighbourhood, too. Murals adorn many a wall and doorway, making it a riot of colour. ESCAPES EXCLUSIVE HOME WORLDWIDE

Feeling somewhat soggy from the non-stop rain, we stroll through a shopping district on our way back to the The Bristol Hotel, ducking in and out of high-street style stores. A quick change of clothes and we rush back into the streets, the rain now a drizzle, to Tobacco Factory Theatres. As the name suggests, this former tobacco factory, built between the late 19th and early 20th Century, is now home to two intimate theatres and a jam-packed programme of diverse shows, workshops and events. We score tickets to a double act of comedy and spend the evening giggling. It’s a lovely end to the day.

By morning, the rain has cleared. There are blue skies overhead and the sun is drying the last of the sidewalk swimming holes. We have just enough time to swing by the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a Grade I-structure that spans the picturesque Avon Gorge. There’s something awe-inspiring about this engineering marvel and we could easily spend longer here, but we have a train to catch. There’s so much more to Bristol than meets the eye. We’ve barely scratched the surface of the city that spawned Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack, and Wallace and Gromit. There are boat tours, art galleries and entire districts to be discovered. Just like the sun, Bristol is rising, and it’s a sight worth seeing. n
