DARLOE

A Tale to Tell

Darloe House is a stunning, detached, Grade II-listed Georgian villa. From the moment you enter the property, its charm and grandeur are abundantly clear. It has character and traditional elements but with a contemporary twist, which creates a welcoming and wonderful living space. Built in 1800 for Lieutenant Parkins Prynne, a local naval officer who fought on HMS Achille at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, there is a lot of history within the home, and it’s a property known locally as ‘The Captain’s House’. The property boasts large sash windows, original woodwork and doors, high ceilings and period fireplaces. Each of these elements reflects the history of Darloe House, giving each room an element of grace and enchantment. The current owners have lived at the property for eight years and have spent this time creating a comfortable and cosy home.

The property boasts a grand entrance hallway with the original sweeping staircase and beautiful arched windows, which allow a lot of light into the area. In fact, the entire property is bright, and natural light flows into the home. You can access much of the downstairs area from here, including a beautiful music room with original shutters, gorgeous alcoves with shelving, and an original feature fireplace. Elsewhere, the drawing room provides a relaxing and studious space with unbeatable views across the rooftops of West Looe Square.

Friendly and Fun

This property has a lot of living space, but the breakfast room really stands out as something special. It’s part of the Victorian extension completed around 1860, and it offers a range of base and wall-mounted units, including closed and glass-fronted cupboards. There is also a breakfast bar with flowing worktop space, an exposed stone wall and a lot of room for appliances. The dining room is equally impressive and has the original feature fireplace and slate hearth, solid mahogony flooring, and a unique granite step into the breakfast room. You will find a Falcon range cooker in the kitchen with bespoke hand-painted tiled splashbacks. There’s also a wooden window overlooking the garden, and a wooden door gives access to the kitchen garden itself which has a sheltered patio area for barbecuing and dining. It’s a light, airy and fresh place to cook.

There are four bedrooms at Darloe House, all of which are spacious and comfortable. The master bedroom has harbour, river and sea views, as does another of the large bedrooms. There is more than enough space for a large family or for those who enjoy having guests to stay. Darloe House also has a utility room and cloakroom, meaning you won’t be short on storage space.

Attention to Detail

Outside, you will find a beautiful back garden and courtyard, which are just as impressive as the interior of Darloe House. There’s no shortage of outdoor space to explore, and it’s the ideal place to relax, unwind and enjoy the gorgeous foliage. There is a large south-facing patio at the top of the garden – from which there are superb views of the sea and Rame Head – and there is a bespoke summerhouse. Built in 2018, the summerhouse boasts double glazing, a pair of stunning stained glass windows, and provides an oasis of calm. On one side, you will find a fenced area with raised vegetable beds, which is ideal if you have dreams of being somewhat self-sufficient in the kitchen. On the other side are a small paved area for outdoor eating and a shed for storing garden furniture. Elsewhere in the back garden, there is a quaint wooden bridge and pond and several lawn areas. Many plants have been added to the terraced areas, including shrubs, flowers and fruit trees.

At the very front of Darloe House there are two garages and there is potential parking available on the shared forecourt. Steps lead up to an equally striking front garden designed in the Georgian style, with dramatic box hedging, herbaceous borders, bedding areas, grassy areas and a rose garden. There is a garden gate leading to a paved area by the workshop and the courtyard. It’s safe to say that the property has abundant garden space for you to enjoy.

About the area

The coastal town of Looe is a historic fishing harbour, still in use by fishermen, and with more permanent residents and fewer second homes than some coastal neighbours such as Fowey.

In the summer months, Looe’s narrow streets, bordered by period cottages, are filled with visitors and holidaymakers browsing the independent shops and galleries. But it doesn’t close after September, with a music festival, New Year fireworks and fancy-dress celebrations and other events generating “shoulder-season” interest, and shops staying open throughout the winter.

Looe’s dramatic landscape has hillsides with elevated properties that look out over the coast. Between these steep inclines are the town’s main streets, harbour and the River Looe, which flows between East and West Looe.
