Woodfield Wellington Road | Edgbaston | Birmingham

WOODFIELD This Grade II listed Regency villa was originally commissioned by Josiah Richards, a maker of oriental amulets and brother of Theophilus Richards, the famous Birmingham gunsmith who went on to found the Westley Richards firm still in business today. This historic house is situated in a highly sought after area of Edgbaston; and uniquely faces away from Wellington Road enhancing its privacy.

From the exterior it is a four square, rendered, Regency mansion which has undergone extensive and sympathetic renovation including a new roof, renovated sash windows and modernisation of both the kitchen and bathrooms in keeping with the architecture. A standalone Victorian coach house (circa 1880) sits within the grounds and has been converted to provide a one bedroom house with living room, bathroom, kitchen and double bedroom providing the opportunity for rental income. The extensive garden has formal lawns and herbaceous borders, a more rustic lawned area with shrubs and trees and a small area of woodland.

Hall The hall, leading from the main door, provides the perfect entry to this beautiful house. It has a polished wooden floor. The ceiling rose is decorated with acanthus leaves and the surround is adorned with stylised roses and stars. The door frames are decorated with carved lions heads. A small passage leads to the garden patio. Reception 1 Accessed immediately to the left of the main door this large room is currently used as a dining room. It has the original pitch pine floor, and an Adam style functioning fireplace. There is a large sash window over looking the garden with original wooden shutters. The door and window frames are adorned with neoclassical features in the form of Egyptian carvings. The ceiling has an acanthus leaf border and a vine leaf frieze. Seller Insight Dr. & Mrs. Richards have lived in this property with their four children for 17 years and it has been a wonderful family home for them. “The children are grown up now and have moved to various other locations around the world. We adore the house and are sad to be moving away, but it is time to let another family enjoy the wonderful life we have been so lucky to have in this house!” recalls Mrs. Richards “We needed a big home for our family. We fell in love with the beautiful Georgian architecture of this house and loved that it is completely unique within the area. The house has abundant examples of neo-classical features of the era including Roman/Greek/Egyptian style friezes, and carvings.” “The drawing room is a wonderful place for family and friends to gather around the beautiful fireplace. The room is always flooded with light through the two enormous floor to ceiling windows. The house is full of original features, built in 1827, it still holds charm, stories and memories of everyone who has lived here.” One of the owners favourite rooms is the Orangery. “It is a wonderful feature and the perfect place to enjoy breakfast in the summer, enjoying the view of the garden with the sunlight flooding in.” “The huge kitchen is always the gathering place and spacious enough to allow everyone to gather, chat, eat and drink – the house comes alive with parties and the kitchen is always the hub of drinking and socialising.” The views of the garden from all sides of the house are beautiful – especially when it has snowed, it is like a private Narnia with the forest and sweeping lawns. An enchanting playground for children! In the summer they would spend hours in the garden making dens and playing games. The views of Wellington Road, and the other gorgeous Georgian houses from some of the bedrooms remind you that you’re not in the middle of nowhere! These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property. They have not been independently verified, should not be relied on without verification and do not necessarily reflect the views of the agent.
