We heard from him about how he got his start in the industry, what sets him apart from other agents, and more. See below! As an award-winning Realtor who started his career as an actor in shows such as CSI, how did you get your start in residential Real Estate? Oh wow! Ha ha ha… I don’t even know how to answer this, you are catching me off guard. CSI was my first TV appearance! Well, truthfully Real Estate has always been in my blood. When I was a kid growing up in DC, my parents used to take my brother and I to open houses on the weekends constantly. It was boring and I think I maybe broke a few lamps and pissed off some listing agents, but I was getting an education in Real Estate at an early age. On paper, in school, it says I studied Political Economy, Foreign Affairs and concentrated on Global Organized Crime. I took a variety of classes and I was really drawn more to the personalities of my professors and subject matters that intrigued me rather than a clear path to a career. Acting was something that was an unusual choice of occupation, I only really thought about doing it until after I had started doing it, so it seems it was the same way in Real Estate. You mentioned having a near-death experience in a car accident that completely changed your life. How has that impacted your outlook on life and your passion for real estate? I was actually hit by a car as a pedestrian. I don’t recommend it. In fact, the CDC reports that pedestrians, per trip, are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash. Frankly, I was lucky I didn’t die. I was out for about a year. What the experience did for me is I gained a finer respect for traumatic brain injuries and PTSD. Both of which I suffered immensely. Also, you have to keep in mind I was a working actor at the time, and it stopped my career dead in its tracks. If you work in an arena as competitive as entertainment your heart truly needs to be in it. I have always had a big heart, but after the experiences I went through which are too vast and personal to discuss here, my level of empathy toward any person or situation grew tenfold. After the accident, my heart really wasn’t in acting anymore. Towards the end
of the first year of my recovery my Mother had an accident back in DC. She fell down a flight of stairs and fractured her spine. I came back from Los Angeles to help her for what I thought would be a few weeks. It became frightfully obvious to me that she needed to downsize. I created a strategy to make that happen and I enlisted an agent who was our neighbor and took her through the process of buying a flat and selling her house. During that experience I gained a deep respect for the service and care that good Real Estate agents provide. Also, Mom yelled at me for not having my Real Estate license because she “didn’t want to pay all those commissions!” What would you say sets you apart from other agents? I tell the truth, I’m creative, and I will never commit to knowing everything. I am always learning something new. I think it’s important to be open and have an intellectual curiosity towards life and business. I don’t know if that sets me apart. What I do have that sets me apart is the relationships I have created with the highest level of vendors whether they are attorneys, banks, Title & Escrow…there are many moving parts and individuals involved in Real Estate transactions and I think it’s important to work with people you trust who are also the best. I think this may be why my clients treat me like family, as I do them. What’s your biggest success to date? Well, in Real Estate, it would have to be the building you chose for your cover this issue: The Ginsburg as well as the property I have on the opposite page. I have a client who wanted to buy a building as an investment. I found them many opportunities throughout the DC Metro area which includes properties in Maryland and Virginia that are near Metros. After proposing many off market buildings that were solid investments my client said they weren’t interested in any large unpleasant looking buildings and wanted something more upscale that would also provide a good yield. There was nothing on the market like that. I was able to source a developer who built this project specifically for my client. The Cadillac Hotel on the opposite page is a repeat client who met me when I sold them this property and now they are selling it again through me. That’s the highest compliment I can receive. Ultimate success is HAPPY CLIENTS! What is your approach to buying and selling top homes for clients? There is a literal process that I take my clients through which is proprietary. What I can share with you is that I begin with the end in mind
and it’s never a straight line from start to finish. I ask that my clients place their trust in me, and if they can’t do that I would rather not work with them. How would you describe the current market in some of the areas that you serve? In the DC Metro area we had election fatigue, COVID-19 fatigue, and a move towards single family homes and 2nd homes in rural areas. We had a slight softness in the condo market, but once Biden got elected there was an uptick in showings across the board and I had a bidding war on two properties. Also, if you prepare your property to be desirable for buyers they usually sell quicker. The days of just photographing a property and throwing it on the internet have been over for quite some time, but now more than ever it’s important to put your best foot forward if you are selling and enlist a superlative agent to create a strategy for a successful sale. Do you predict 2021 to be a good time to buy in DC? It’s always a good time to buy in DC. Full disclosure: I’m biased because I’m a Washingtonian and I love this town. Jesting aside, throughout the last five major real estate cycles, DC has always had a strong lower threshold. DC has also been an overlooked city for many years and has now become more fashionable. We have record-breaking new developments and new construction, and can barely keep up with demand. I am bullish on DC Real Estate, so yes, I predict 2021 is a great time to buy in DC. If you like Real Estate and own a number of homes throughout the world and you don’t have a home or Real Estate investments in DC it’s kind of like not having more than 1 passport.
