Q &A As a world leader in furniture design, Roche Bobois has been leading the way for innovative and unique pieces for almost 70 years. We caught up with Brian Fell, the showroom manager at Roche Bobois in Tysons, Virginia at Fairfax Square to discuss the latest trends we can expect.

How did you get involved in the furniture design industry? My undergrad at UCLA was my design foundation within the Art & Architecture department. I still do not know where my future talents lie, as I have curated exquisite high profile events throughout South Florida to owning a landscape and graphic design company in Los Angeles to finding a niche in interiors for the past decade. This will be my second showroom for the Washington DC/Virginia market that I will have the privilege of opening and my current company is Roche Bobois in Tysons in the exclusive Fairfax Square shopping center adjacent to Tiffany’s. What are some of the top selling products among shoppers? Roche Bobois has been around since the 50’s and heavily inspired by the Bauhaus designers such as Minvielle, Steiner and Airbourne. Being a well branded international powerhouse, Roche Bobois first settled into north America in the early 70’s. When clients see the evolution of the ‘Iconic Mah Jong’ or many other collections over the years, each decade has its own unique time stamp in design history. What is your favorite piece(s) from the Roche Bobois collection? The Mah Jong which illustrates the future for Roche Bobois, holds onto the handmade detailing of such a luxurious and simple design but with well-known designers from fashion houses of Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel and Missoni Home make it a unique player in terms of high-end furniture. What are a few of the popular trends occurring in home design? Bold color and expressions through your interiors. Each room can tell a fabulous story and more and more clients are willing to utilize interior designers or our inhouse design teams in our 3D studio to see where the professionals can bring a room or home to a new level. It’s very basic to show beige and every color has its purpose, but our job is to listen to the clients’ needs and see what they need first and then create a storyboard that can inspire them, and bringing color to a project does just that.

What is your process to ensure each client has selected a piece ideal for them? Being a good listener and understanding the dynamics of the home or entertaining needs are essential to a good relationship. Some clients have had no budget for their pets and dedicated a 4k budget for a chic bed for there beloved fur ball. Other clients are either entertaining a ton of work functions or need a cozy modern retreat away from the city & work life. I also love to introduce my design contacts to see if they would work as an interior designer or architect as they can make the process seamless and have so many resources for any portion of the home remodel or updates. Washington D.C. Positions Itself As A Savvy Luxury Investment Choice. By Cheyenne Prosper

I

n the last few years, Washington D.C has attracted many new residents with the changing landscape of the city. As more people look to move to D.C., the demand strongly outweighs the supply and the area’s desirability has yet to wane. The boom in the nation’s capital has partly been a result of it positioning itself as a tech hub. Companies such as Yelp, Everfi and a slew of others are swiftly moving in and creating jobs and developers have taken notice. The race to snatch up property and begin building has lead to the development of areas like The Wharf and West Half. Yet what can all this say for the luxury market? “Demand came first and then developers caught on,” said Gretchen Koitz, Vice President at Compass and based in Maryland. “And as the empty nesters leave 5,000-square-foot houses in the suburbs, they don’t want a 950-square foot two-bedroom. They want something bigger, and that’s where the luxury development started.” The geographical limits that Washington D.C. faces poses unique obstacles and advantages to developers and the luxury

market. Buildings mustn’t be higher than 13 stories to comply with the 1910 Height Act and as property becomes more scarce and the surge of new residents to D.C., investors have looked to the minute city as a hotbed for the emergence of luxury properties. “[D.C.] is a smart investment because the population keeps growing, and there are only so many square feet in the city,” Ms. Koitz said. “The demand will continue to be higher than supply, and now we’re seeing that the number of international investors is continuing to increase.” The city’s foreseeable future reveals no slowdown in the momentum of individuals seeking to call D.C. home as it has become a serious contender for Amazon’s second headquarters. CEO, Jeff Bezo’s acquisition of a mansion in popular Kalorama neighborhood has also done little to squelch rumours. “The fast pace of change is going to continue,” she said. “If it’s not a hole in the ground, it’s on the books.”

Diving Into D.C.’s Food Scene

As a city that might have gotten a bad rap in the past for its culinary offerings, Washington D.C.’s food scene has evolved into one of the tastemakers of the industry. This evolution caught the eye of Justin Schuble, the man behind the camera of the widely successful food blog, @dcfoodporn. Born out of his need for a creative outlet while studying Marketing and Finance at Georgetown University, Justin’s passion project turned into a widely sought reference point for his fanbase of 247K followers on Instagram looking for the next tastiest bite in the nation’s capital. We caught up with the food blogger to get the inside scoop on the juiciest D.C. eats.

Now that I do this full-time, I try to set up photoshoots during the day and give myself a couple meals a week where I leave the camera at home and just enjoy (like I used to!). Are there any quintessential DC restaurants you’d recommend to first time visitors? This is such a tough question. D.C. has so many amazing restaurants, and the answer to this really depends on what you are looking for. Here are just a few places that I think someone visiting D.C. should check out - Union Market, Le Diplomate, Maketto, Sfoglina, Tail Up Goat, Compass Rose, Little Serow, Thip Khao, Ice Cream Jubilee, District Doughnut, and Baked & Wired. But the list could go on and on.

Why did you start @dcfoodporn? Food has always been very important to me. Growing up, we used to eat out all the time, since cooking at home was not something we did very often. When I got to college, I was eager to explore the D.C. food scene. I photographed everything I was eating with my phone and decided to start posting some of the photos on Instagram. I never expected @dcfoodporn to grow into what it is today. Are there any up and coming DC food trends we should know about? I think D.C. tends to get trends a few months after New York and LA (gourmet doughnuts, poke, rainbow everything). So whatever they are doing now, we can expect to see soon! Is there a cuisine you enjoy blogging about the most? I like to cover all types of cuisines, but some of my favorite things to photograph (and eat) are tacos and doughnuts. Ice cream is always fun, but things tend to get messy pretty quickly.. How has your blog changed the way you eat at restaurants? @dcfoodporn has drastically changed the way that I eat out. Since my account is so visual, I have to do everything I can to get the perfect shot. That means asking for a seat by the

I have met so many incredibly talented bloggers and influencers over the years, and I am lucky enough to call some of them my close friends. What’s the most mind-blowing dish you’ve experienced? I was just in Hong Kong and experienced some really exciting dishes. I think my favorite was a Rice Roll dish with a peanut butter sauce. What’s the most Instagramworthy restaurant for someone looking to impress their friends? I think Blagden Alley is a great spot to take friends or out of towners because it has so much to offer and is not what you would expect from D.C. You can get Chinese food at Tiger Fork, a Michelin-starred meal at The Dabney, drinks at Columbia Room or Calico and even great coffee at La Colombe. It really has everything. And the area is so charming (and instagrammable!) Is there a signature DC dish? I think what makes D.C. unique is the fact that it is a melting pot of some of the best cuisines in the world.
