FP: There Seems to be a Large Increase in the Number of People Moving into Luxury Condos. Why is This? NB: The Luxury condo boom has come about in part because the first of the baby boomers are retiring, or simply switching career pursuits after they have raised their families. That chapter of their lives is over. Boomers now want to pursue their own interests. They want to come and go as they please, rather than being tied to a big house to manage. They don’t want to spend time on home maintenance, yard work, snow shoveling, roof repairs, or anything else. They have “been there, done that.” FP: What is the Luxury Condo Lifestyle? NB: I call it a lifestyle because, more than an actual place to live, it is a lifestyle, a way of living that is very different from the lifestyle you may have in a large, 6 bedroom home in Potomac, Chevy Chase or other suburb. Luxury condo developments are typically located in vibrant cities with the ability to live, work and play all within the same few blocks, with shopping, dining and entertainment close by instead of having to drive across town. People want to be around the energy and excitement that these communities offer. The desire for a more carefree, active and independent lifestyle has led many large house owners to seek Luxury condo developments that allow them to continue living the lifestyle they have become accustomed to but without all the maintenance and upkeep of a larger home. People are discovering that having less house, less junk, and less responsibility in this regard is incredibly liberating. FP: What are the issues involved in transitioning to a Condo Lifestyle? NB: For someone who has lived in the same home or neighborhood for 15+ years, moving into a condo is a huge change and one that can be both scary and exciting at the same time. What I find to be the biggest concern for my clients is where to put all the furniture, clothes, and household items that have been collected over a lifetime

in a large home. Adapting to this lifestyle does require the willingness to scale down and focus on keeping the most meaningful things. It forces us to reinvent ourselves somewhat. By simplifying the “things” in our life, we enrich our actual living by focusing on things that really matter like new experiences, hobbies, travel, and quality time with friends and families. FP: How Do You Know so Much About the Luxury Condo Lifestyle? NB: Besides the fact that I have sold many condos, luxury and otherwise, during my career, I live the luxury condo lifestyle with my own family. I have a young son and absolutely love that he is growing up in the city, amongst all the diversity and culture. There is also a feeling of neighbors watching out for neighbors which is very nice. Almost every one of my neighbors who own a luxury condo has had the big house, raised a family and is ready to get back to enjoying individual pursuits, like they did before they had a family. In my personal real estate business, people frequently come to me wanting to sell their big house in Chevy Chase, Potomac, Washington, D.C. or Bethesda and move into a hip, stylish condo in the middle of the action. Condo living is certainly not for everyone but more and more people are seeing the tremendous value these days, especially with our fast paced, busy lives.
