Builder Profile: Jonathan Smith of Brush Arbor

Jonathan Smith and his custom homebuilding company, Brush Arbor are on a quest, not only to leave Northern Virginia homeowners feeling they received best-in-class service but also to raise awareness of those in need of homes altogether. After spending years in Third World countries and seeing so many families in such poor living conditions, Jonathan came back to the states feeling humbled and inspired to form a business that gave back at a global level. Through the Buy One Build One program he formed, for every home built by Brush Arbor, a home is built for an impoverished family abroad. For the sale of Brush Arbor’s newly built French Country home in McLean Virginia’s Springhaven Estates (8401 Sparger Street), as many as three homes will be built for families in need. With 8401 Sparger now on the market and Jonathan preparing for his next Buy One Build One initiative, I wanted to learn more about what inspires him in each of his intertwining worlds. Every home has its own unique personality. How would you describe the personality of 8401 Sparger? Jonathan Smith: We built this home in French Country, an architectural design filled with interesting contrasts – comfortable elegance, rustic warmth and Old World luxury. What were your inspirations for this home? Jonathan Smith: We came across a beautiful home of a similar style in the farmlands of Wayland, Massachusetts. Elements like the stone tower and the tall, sloping hipped roofs with gables added an almost fairytalelike exterior to our original design. Having such tall and mighty trees lining a nice open yard really completes the picture. What elements or characteristics of the home do you feel are most special? Jonathan Smith: I think the look of the home is very unique…I imagine ivy growing up the stone wing. For the interior, we designed the farmhouse kitchen for all of the many ways members of a household utilizes the space nowadays, in addition to the obvious eating and dining. We created a window bench for the kids to read their tablets or

a couple to enjoy their morning coffee, an extra-large quartzite island for light snacking or a daytime workspace, and an open transition to the family room for easy entertaining. Do you have a vision yet of where and for who you’ll build homes for through Buy One Build One with the sale of Sparger? We have partners in several countries that have families in need waiting. The first family that comes to mind is a widow near Antiqua Guatemala who lives under plastic tarps with her daughter, who has severe cerebral palsy. Our partners in Guatemala are helping her but they have no room left in their orphanage for the girl and the mother is loving and desirous of taking care of her daughter. She just needs a safe/ dry place to live…a very simple home will change their lives dramatically. What person/family that you built a home for through Buy One Build One has left the largest impact on you? Jonathan Smith: Unfortunately, of the 35+ homes that our partners have built, I have only met a few of the families. One that comes to mind is the grandmother we built for in a village in Uganda where I used to live. I was in Uganda for the dedication of the home and the 10 yearold grandson came to me crying, hugging me, and saying something in Luganda that I couldn’t understand. My friend who built the home translated, “he says that the thatched roof on their old mud hut used to collapse every night during the rainy season. They would put metal on top held down by big rocks. Sometimes the wind and rain were so bad that the rocks would fall in on them. He would pray that God would give them a new home. After some time of praying, he gave up on God. Now he believes in God again and knows God heard his prayers. He wants to help build the next one in the village.” What do you feel is the most important thing a future homeowner should know about Brush Arbor when they buy a home from you? Jonathan Smith: We take care of our customers. Buy One Build One is a reflection of our belief that people are more important than profits. Obviously, we are in business to make a profit, but never at the expense of the relationship and doing right by the people we work with.
