The Watergate: a living legacy Outside of a select few mega arenas, modern marvel skyscrapers and European architectural masterpieces of yore, it’s not often that you find yourself in the presence of a building which carries a legacy as pronounced as the Watergate Complex. Watergate has topped headlines so often since the buildings initial development; it’s easy to have forgotten the building’s original significance and how greatly it transformed the DC area. It’s true that since Watergate’s first opening in 1965, the building has grown to take on a brand all its own. Perhaps no one knows the stories behind the Watergate legacy better than the Winston Real Estate Team founded by Henry Winston. Residents basked poolside as waiters served champagne and delicatessens, while Hollywood directors projected films which were outmatched in their grandeur only by the scene of celebrities lounging around the magnificent, elliptical pool watching them; it was a movie within a movie. Luxury abound, the Watergate also housed Les Champs (which was also managed by Henry Winston) – a wonderland of luxury boutiques. Commencing the event with an eco-focus was perfectly symbolic of the social responsibility projected down the runway both through the environmentally conscious designs of the students and the philanthropic spirit of the event founder, Ean Williams, who produced the event to provide a world platform for DC’s great designing talents. The creativity which lit-up the floor was evidence that the future of the fashion industry will be guided by designers capable of keeping our bodies glamorously adorned while letting mother nature keep her beautiful flowers blooming, her trees budding and her many other aesthetic delights coexisting with us for many years to come. As Coco Chanel more elegantly describes it, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Perhaps the gorgeous cherry blossoms which will soon cover the district served as a competitive advantage for these designers as they crafted their sustainable ensembles, but whatever the case, the 2014 Autumn/Winter Collections DC Fashion Week impressed with a seamless fusion of ecosystem and fashion Ms. Chanel could appreciate.
