WHEN YOU HEAR Great Taste’s judging process described as robust, you can have faith. Set up and organised by the Guild of Fine Food, this food accreditation scheme, is seen by many as the biggest and most credible out there, and the numbers bear this out. Some 12,772 entries from more than 100 different countries were received by the Guild for 2019. It took in excess of two months and 500 judges – from chefs and food critics through to retail buyers and producers – to get through this mountain of food and drink. Every single product got a fair crack – blind-tasted and debated until judges were certain about whether it was worthy of an award or didn’t make the grade. And at the end of the process 3,409 products were awarded a 1-star, 1,326 received a 2-star and just 208 were deemed to be at the level of 3-star. You’ll find every item in this elite band of 3-star winners, which accounts for less than 3% of total entries, in the pages of this publication and you can rest assured that each one has earned its place. For those that still need convincing, you’ll also encounter a number of our judges and see what Great Taste means to them. EACH PRODUCT that enters Great Taste is tasted and re-tasted by a veritable army of food professionals before it can be deemed worthy of an award. But the Guild of Fine Food called back a selection of top judges in July to put those 3-stars through their paces for a final time. This judging session is how the winners of the Golden Forks (for best in region and certain categories) are decided upon and how the Supreme Champion is determined.
