Wearable Technology THE FUTURE OF SMART HOMES By Tonya Lambert

T

he future lies with the Internet of Things: a sophisticated, intricate network where the many systems and devices within our homes communicate with each other to fulfill our needs and wishes. This is the future of smart homes. Did you have a bad sleep? Not to worry, your sleep monitor will signal the coffee maker to adjust the strength of your coffee. Feeling stressed? Don’t worry, help is on its way; your mood ring will automatically adjust the sound system and thermostat to create a relaxing atmosphere. Today’s smart homes are laying the foundation for this intuitive future. Some systems and an increasing number of devices can now be activated and controlled through the use of apps on smartphones and tablets. However, as Tom Emrich, founder of We Are Wearables, explains, “The Internet of Things is about making dumb things smart. Things now aren’t really smart; they’re just awake. They haven’t reached their full potential yet.”

The Apple Watch, scheduled to appear in the spring, is expected to include apps which will allow the wearer to interact with their home, enabling them to do such things as turn off the lights after they have left their house, much as with smartphones and tablets. OveRcOming the Obstacles Several challenges will need to be overcome as the Internet of Things develops, including the issue of power for wearable technology. To work, wearables must be on, using a lot of energy; companies are researching ways to make them more energy-efficient. As more devices become smart, another obstacle is how to integrate the various technologies for effective communication. At the moment, several integration platforms are in various stages of development. One day, everything in our homes will be interconnected. With wearable technology, an interactive, smart life is closer to reality.

Wearable technology is expected to completely supersede smartphones and tablets for controlling such things as lighting, heating, sound systems and security in smart homes within five years. Canadian-based company, Thalmic Labs, is currently fine-tuning its gesture-control smart armband, Myo. Using biosensors to detect movements of the wrist and fingers, Myo enables its wearer to control digital devices within the home, such as computers, smartphones, iPods, video game systems and home theatres. One Ring tO Rule The Japanese company, Logbar, has developed a smart ring, which will literally allow you to wrap your home around your finger. Simply press a button on the side of this unisex ring, move your fingers to turn on the lights, turn off the television, play music, take photos and track your location. The Ring was unveiled to the public at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January. Fin Robotics is working on another wearable ring that will allow you to control household devices and play video games through simple hand movements. With Fin, the palm of your hand becomes your keyboard as the ring tracks the movement of your thumb

ake car collection company CEO Craig Jackson who built his Arizona home with a circular 3,600 sq. ft. garage. It displays his muscle and luxury car collection facing centre, like the spokes in a wheel. At the centre, a Bugatti Veyron rotates on a deserving pedestal. If you own a Bugatti, Ferarri, Lamborghini or McLaren, a climate-controlled “Garage Mahal” will definitely be on your wish list. For many car aficionados, the ideal garage shares the same elements as the man

cave. Garages with wet bars, flat-screen televisions, fitness centres, woodworking shops and lounge areas to display autorelated memorabilia are becoming increasingly popular. Las Vegas native and Forty4 Asset Management CIO Francis Wisniewski put a small basketball court and gambling room — complete with a full-size craps table — in his 15,000 sq. ft. garage. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who famously collects Porsches, keeps them in an underground garage three blocks from his

home. The three-storey garage houses his 46 Porsches and features a clubroom with a billiard table, kitchenette and office. A New York penthouse apartment listed for sale comes with an “en suite sky garage” that allows for your car to be transported by elevator to your apartment and parked just outside your door. The idea of using a car lift, or elevator, has gone beyond space-challenged citydwellers. Car collectors who want to maximize garage space by stacking their vehicles also use them, as do those who prefer the attention stay focused on the garden, and not on their vehicle. Swiss company Cardok has created a bespoke parking solution to suit any home or vehicle. Installed under an existing driveway, cars disappear into a hole via a hydraulic ramp. A decorative roof fools passersby into thinking there’s no car parked at home and maintains the decorative appeal of your garden. It becomes impossible to vandalize or steal the car and you don’t have to worry about power-outages

because every installation comes with a small back-up generator. The same company offers the CarLift, which was developed to enable customers to access their basement garages utilizing a lift rather than a ramp. Turntables can also be provided within the basement garage to allow easier access to every underground parking space. In some scenarios, a garage is more valuable to a property when converted into living space. Some choose to transform their garages into extra bedrooms, home gyms or cinemas, while they move the car underground, as it’s more cost-effective than moving to a larger house. According to the 2011 Avid Design Driver study, homeowners across Canada are increasingly interested in multi-functional spaces. “Homeowners are trying to get the biggest bang for their buck,” says Tim Bailey, president of Avid Ratings Canada. “They prefer great rooms to separate rooms. For example, formal dining rooms dropped off from a must-have for 27

per cent of homeowners to 16 per cent. Now garages are being used for storage, garden items, bicycles, snowboards, and even hosting parties.” Having just returned from the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, Bailey can attest to the trend in luxury garages. “There were so many products and services targeting the garage space,” he says. “There were lifts, many different flooring systems, storage systems, racks and more. You could set up anything from a man cave garage with games room to a NASCAR-themed garage. It all comes down to homeowners trying to use as much of their space as effectively as possible.” About 3.5 million Canadian homes have attached garages, according to a 2007 report on energy use by Natural Resources Canada, and a garage generally increases property values by approximately 64 per cent of its cost, depending on current markets. The kind of garage that suits you and your car perfectly will depend on budget, space and how you will enjoy your wheels best.

s the owner and operator of Concord Homes, Martin Mack likes everything to be as close to perfect as possible. So, it’s no surprise the definition of the word ‘concord’ reflects the concept Mack and his team aim to provide for each of their clients. “Concord means harmonious, or the way things come together and exist in a peaceful way,” says Mack with a smile. “A congruency of parts… An agreement of interests or feelings.” CLIENT-DRIVEN SERVICES Opened in 1999, Concord Homes offers design-to-build services that span the gamut of all building and remodeling needs. Under the leadership of Mack, manager Janice Wiersema and Mack’s father, Larry, Concord Homes is a company that offers more than one might expect from the average homebuilder. At the forefront of their services, Concord Homes’ design-to-build work has awarded the company an accolade far more valuable than any other: happy and satisfied clients who are thrilled upon seeing their visions made real. Whether starting from scratch with an idea for a new home or working to problem solve and renovate an existing property,

each design-to-build project begins with the same thing: a conversation. There, Mack and Wiersema learn what their clients want to do, and continue to work with them to make it happen. Sulaiman, his wife, Farah, and their three children are currently working with Concord Homes to build a waterfront property to call home.

“Martin gave us his opinion on how difficult it would be to do what we wanted with the properties. Honestly, there were times he would see the house and just tell us ‘No, this won’t work,’” says Farah. “It was really helpful for us; it’s really nice to work with someone who is honest like that, and isn’t wasting any time.” The work Concord Homes is doing with the Nanjis exemplifies the way the company works with clients through custom designto-build projects. When Sulaiman and Farah sold their home and were making decisions about settling into Kingston long-term, the couple, originally from Vancouver, turned to Concord. Having worked with Mack and the Concord team on a complete basement renovation in the past, the Nanjis knew they could depend on Concord to create their ideal home for


their family. After viewing properties, they debated whether to renovate an existing structure or build from scratch. With the help of Mack, the couple found an ideal waterfront property for the home they envision. After demolishing the 1970s home that currently exists on the property, Concord Homes will build the Nanjis cottage-style dream home in Kingston’s west end later this year. The Nanjis couldn’t be more excited. “It’s interesting because in the beginning we weren’t necessarily considering buying a property to basically demolish the existing house; but working with Martin and the vision for what we wanted, we decided there isn’t a big difference between renovating the old house as opposed to starting from scratch,” Sulaiman explains. “With this option, you get what you want… And what we’ve created is exactly what we’ve always wanted.” BUILDING A BETTER MODERN COMPANY When Mack started Concord Homes, one of the main objectives was to utilize new technology and products in the construction and finishing work throughout projects. With an eye to the future and the knowledge of how the industry has grown and changed over the past quarter century, Mack feels it’s important that modern construction reflect the modern world. This includes using products and materials that are environmentally and health conscious, as well as building energy efficient homes in environmentally friendly ways. As well, Concord works with the same sub-contractors consistently, and considers these companies part of their extended team. “We use the same subcontractors all the time. We’re like the traveling circus — we pull up and we move around,” Mack says with his signature sense of humour. “Because of that, they all know each other too,” adds Wiersema. “It creates a respectful, collaborative workplace. And they all know what our expectations are, because Martin has very high expectations for everybody who comes to work on our job sites. We’re trying to give our clients the best product, and that is everybody’s responsibility.” According to client Judy Hebert, this team approach and the relationships shared by those at Concord, and the subcontractors they work with, not only result in meticulous craftsmanship, but also in a work environment that is positive to be a part of. “It was obvious [lead carpenter] Tim and the crew enjoyed their work. They were always in good spirits,” says Hebert. Her Canoe Lake Road cottage was built by Concord Homes, all while she and her husband, Paul, remained in Guelph, Ont., where they currently live. “Since we were building four hours away from the site, Janice regularly sent pictures and descriptions of the work being done. She always offered great advice when decisions had to be made, regarding choices for the bathrooms and kitchen. Nothing was too much trouble,” Hebert says. “Anyone who has seen this cottage is impressed with the workmanship… The house boasts Martin’s signature windowsills, which are stunning, and the wall edges are all rounded. Everything was installed with great attention to detail — ‘As close to perfection as possible’ was simply their expectation.” Hebert adds that the rapport she built with Mack and Wiersema only enhanced her experience working with Concord Homes, a sentiment echoed ardently by a number of Concord’s clients.

“We really are happy, and we recommend Concord to everybody. Their workmanship is superb; everything was really nicely done and their after-service is very good,” says Alena Schram, whose Amherst Island century home almost doubled in size when Concord Homes completed an addition project in 2006. Room-to-Room Organization for a StressFree Move move. If you are putting your things in storage, put a few tea bags in your fridge/freezer so any moisture left in the appliance will dry up and mould will not grow. If you are moving a gas oven, have the gas line removed professionally. Make sure all items have been removed from your stove drawer. The microwave plate should be removed and packed. Ensure all items in your dishwasher have been washed and packed. Garbage cans should be empty and clean.

rganizing your home before your move will make you feel better and more in control of your personal belongings. Room-to-room organizing will make it easier and less time consuming. Follow this guide for a stress-free move. KITCHEN It’s important to disconnect waterlines from your refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher. Have these appliances dry and cleaned out 48 hours prior to your

FOOD When you decide to move with us, you will have the opportunity to donate non-perishable food items before your move. We have partnered with ‘Move For Hunger’ and will be more than happy to assist you in donating unused food items. These items will be placed in a specifically marked ‘Move for Hunger’ box and transported to a local food bank. LAUNDRY ROOM The washer and dryer must be serviced and hoses must be dry and detached. Front load washers must also be blocked (see your users manual for instructions). Gas dryers must be disconnected professionally. If you require assistance having your appliances serviced before and/or after your move, we can set this up for a nominal charge. GARAGE Have hazardous items organized, as you will be moving these items yourself. These items are explosives, gases, flammable liquids and solids, corrosives, or any items liable to cause damage. Keep in mind gas needs to be drained out

of lawnmowers, chainsaws, trimmers, edgers, weed wackers, ATVs, motorbikes, snowmobiles, snow blowers, etc. FAMILY ROOM Flat screen televisions must be removed from walls and stands and packaged in original cartons. Stereo equipment, computer and blue-ray and game consoles need to be unplugged/ dismantled and ready to move. All cords and remotes should be packed with each device. Printers need to have ink cartridges removed prior to packing. If you are renting a cable/satellite box or Internet router, they need to be returned prior to packing or labelled ‘DO NOT MOVE’ if they’re staying with the home. BEDROOM Linens can be washed and packed into a ‘first night box.’ Please be aware cribs must be disassembled and reassembled by owners. When taking apart any items, it’s a good idea to store the pieces, screws, nuts, bolts, washers, etc. in welllabelled plastic bags. Clothing can be kept in drawers, but valuables and breakable items, such as jewelry and perfumes, should be in your possession. FIRST NIGHT BOX When packing a ‘first night box,’ think of items you will need the first night in your new home. This box will be loaded onto the truck last and opened the night you move in. There are many areas to consider in the design of your dream home, from livability and accessibility to energy efficiency and personal style. Many homes today are designed with an open floor plan to allow for ease of entertaining and the appearance of a larger space. Traffic flow is another important aspect of good design; again, the open floor plan helps with traffic flow since there is no physical constraint from walls. Avoid areas where traffic flows through one room to get to another as much as possible. While open design is great, be careful that you don’t create wasted space — which is money not well spent. Consider optimal locations for amenities such as laundry. The best location for laundry would be close to the bedrooms, even in two storey homes; limit hauling laundry down stairs or to the basement. Mudrooms are a smart idea for everyday entry into the home, keeping the dirt and mud contained to areas not in view of visitors. Kitchen design is one of the most important, and potentially most expensive, areas in the home. Look at how much entertaining you do and look at your family

ACCESSIBILITY IN YOUR DESIGN When we talk about accessibility, we are talking about elements that make everyday life in the home easier. For example, the garage should be accessible to the kitchen so groceries are easily moved from the car. Consider the location of the bedrooms; moving them close together creates areas for sleeping, away from the hustle and noise of the home. Maybe as empty nesters the master bedroom is the only room that needs to be close to the kitchen and living areas and the remaining bedrooms are for guests, creating a private area for them to stay. Needless to say, accessibility is not always about designing for a disability, but making life as easy as possible for you in the home. There are still many areas to delve into when making the prefect home, which at times can be overwhelming. A good designer will help develop many of your ideas into a dream home that is right for you. ith spring comes the season of new construction as homebuilders everywhere break ground on new projects. It’s also the ideal time for the 2015 Parade of New Homes Kingston — a concept revered by builders and the general public alike.

Three Things You should Know when PurChasing a Condo 1. What are the condo fees? Can you afford them? Beyond your mortgage payment, insurance and property taxes, you will have a monthly condo fee. This fee is used to pay for the common elements and operating costs that vary from building to building. Some fees cover the whole, or part, of the cost of utilities (heat, hydro and water), the property management services, snow removal, landscaping and more. The condo fee is usually calculated in the mortgage approval, and usually the lender will include at least half of it with property taxes when calculating your gross and total debt service ratio. 2. Satisfactory review of the status certificate — you need to underst and this. When buying a resale condo you will request and receive a status certificate.

Your lawyer will review this for you and go over the details of the documents. The certificate will provide information such as: • •

Is the current owner up-to-date in paying the condo fees? 3. What does owning a condominium mean? Hopefully it means easy living for you. There are less considerations and responsibilities for condo owners than single-family homeowners. You have the ability to be more mobile (snowbirds) and hopefully the ability to relax without the worry of all the exterior issues. While you own your unit, you will need to get a definition of the unit boundaries so you know what your responsibilities are with regards to maintenance and repair. Condo ownership means you also have a board of directors working for you. The board meets to ensure the property is being maintained, discuss any repairs needed, organize the annual meeting, propose bylaws and much more. rom the flooring to the architectural details, everything within the room can add to the desired “wow factor.” It’s all about the décor being elegantly distressed.

While many of today’s contemporary bathrooms feature modern synthetics, an old-style bathroom will favour natural materials — think stone, wood and tumbled marble. Extra details, such as exposed wooden ceiling beams and arched doors and windows will help to complete the overall look. If you opt for faux wood beams, consider a custom-axed finish in order to recreate the look of striking hand-hewn beams. See if you can find any reclaimed stone flooring to give your bathroom added charisma. When it comes to lighting, it’s all about sconces and chandeliers made from wrought iron with scrolled patterns and beautiful curves. If you want to channel medieval times, opt for a hoop-style chandelier. Orb chandeliers are just as aesthetically pleasing. If glamour is more your style, select a twinkling crystal chandelier that will lend a little sparkle to your bathroom. Bathtub choices are endless. If, however, you want your bathroom to be authentically old-world, select the highest-quality cast iron tub you can find. Timeless and beautiful, cast iron tubs hold heat longer than alternative materials. The only drawback? They can weigh up to 500 lbs., which could pose a problem for upper-level bathrooms. If you want to go the extra mile, consider a hammered copper tub and sink — such a style statement is sure to grab extra attention. The faucets you select are just as important; choose fixtures with long, curved handles in an oil-rubbed bronze to make an old-world

statement. On the other hand, a bridge-style sink faucet features elegant, over-the-counter piping and will help to complete the style statement you’re making in your bathroom. For a more romantic effect, you might want to consider faucets with porcelain handles. For old-world inspired décor, think richly textured walls in colours that are deep, rich and regal, and remember that you want to strive for a timeworn effect to achieve the desired result. To do this, apply a flat off-white paint with a clean cloth rag — doing this will give the surface an uneven finish. You can further enhance the timeworn look by using some sandpaper or a paint-scraper once the paint dries. Top it off with your colour of choice. When considering window coverings, you’ll want to search out fabrics like luxurious silks that feature oversize scrolls or perhaps floral patterns. You could also try fabrics with stripes for a more masculine effect. Top the window coverings off with lavish accouterments like fringe and tassels to achieve a multi-layered look. If you decide to place any furniture in your bathroom, it needs to be heavy and oversized to be consistent with the old-world design of the rest of your bathroom. You’ll want to choose furniture with rich, handcarved wood and fabrics in heavy brocades. Whatever your dream is when it comes to designing your new bathroom, dream big. When it comes to a bathroom styled with oldworld charm, the sky is the limit.

reating a dream kitchen often means finding the perfect marriage of function and style. Two elements speak to this kitchen design balance: cabinetry and backsplashes. Cabinetry can be fashionable, and today’s drawers, cupboards and pantries create a space that is easy to use and easy to clean. Designed to resist moisture and other residues, backsplashes can also reflect a homeowner’s taste and style. IT’S WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS When it comes to cabinetry, trends are leaning toward simple designs and appearances — but only on the outside, explains Fran Underwood, a Canadian interior designer and past president of the Interior Designers of Canada and the Interior Designers of Nova Scotia. “For the cabinets themselves, there has been a complete shift over the years toward very plain and simple designs,” says Underwood. “Even in the hardware, people prefer finger pulls or grooves to handles and knobs.” The number of kitchen cabinets is decreasing, replaced by the favourable

drawers that make accessing stored items faster and simpler, she says. “People want to be able to do the things they do in the kitchen as easily as possible.” It takes far more steps to get an ingredient, item or appliance out of a cabinet than it does to open a drawer and grab it, she explains. To access and use the multiple appliances we all want — but don’t want cluttering our countertops — many people are reviving the concept of an “appliance garage,” and they’re doing so in a 21st century manner, Underwood explains. “It’s so common to have a blender, a stand mixer, a toaster… and all kinds of different beverage machines,” she says. “So something a lot of people like to do is have these items in places where they are accessible, but also usable. You don’t have to get the appliance out, put it on your counter and plug it in; you just open a door or drawer, and there it is, ready to use! It is definitely still simple, with plain, clean lines, but when you get inside the cabinets and drawers, it’s all the bells and whistles you can possibly find and afford to make using your kitchen easy.”

While neutral, natural, monochromatic tones and shades of white, black and grey seem to remain the favoured colour themes in kitchens, Underwood says she is starting to see pops and splashes of colour making their way back into the most used room in the home.

Today’s kitchens are all about clean lines and simplicity, and clients tend to favour grey-scale or natural colours and shades. A nice way to create a continuity of the streamlined kitchen design, suggests Underwood, is to have tiles placed in a straight lay as opposed to a brick lay.

“I just did a kitchen where the cabinets were all a dark grey, sort of like a weathered wood colour, and the countertop was white granite… and I did the walls orange!” she says excitedly. “The client loved it.”

“People seem to always think tile needs to be laid in a brick lay pattern, but it doesn’t,” she says. “Often when I show someone straight lay tiles, they really love it, and they much prefer it… with tile, and especially mosaic tile… it’s just too busy.”

Spring Cleaning In Just One Weekend

pring may be in the air, but the memories of winter still fill my house. The arrival of spring after another relentless winter means one thing to me: spring cleaning! This annual task can feel overwhelming, but with good planning and organization you can complete your spring-cleaning in one weekend. Start with a plan and encourage your children to help, if you can find them. It amazes me how quickly my children can vanish when cleaning products appear. Begin with opening all the windows; let the fresh air chase away the winter blues. Strip all bedding from the beds,

take down draperies and roll up area rugs. Wash pillows, duvets, blankets and draperies and hang them on the clothesline (if you’re lucky enough to have one). This is a great opportunity to turn or flip mattresses as well as freshen them with a sprinkle of baking soda — let it sit for 10 minutes before vacuuming it up. Wash and pack away seasonal clothing; this is the perfect time to declutter. Pack up and donate items you no longer need. If weather permits, take your area rugs on the deck and vacuum them several times. Wash windows, sills and trim and don’t forget fixtures, shades and switch plates. Clean ceiling fan blades and get the ‘dust bunnies’ out from under furniture. In your kitchen, if you really feel ambitious, empty all your cupboards and drawers; give them a good cleaning before reorganizing them. Go through your ‘junk drawer,’ everyone has one. Admit you don’t really need five corkscrews, eight pairs of rusty scissors and that grubby magnet collection you’ve never used. Pull out the appliances so you can

vacuum and scrub the floor beneath them. Clean the inside and outside of your microwave, oven, refrigerator and dishwasher. Wash everything — floors, artwork, decorative items, fixtures, fans, walls and doors. Bathrooms are actually quite simple to clean. Wash down every surface, polish fixtures and mirrors, and scrub the toilet, tub and sink. Empty all the cupboards and drawers and dispose of outdated cosmetics and medicines; get rid of/throw out old medicines carefully to ensure pets, children and the environment are safe. Certain areas of your home really benefit from spring-cleaning, such as foyers and mudrooms, laundry rooms, basements, storage areas and garages. As warmer weather approaches, we’ll be spending more time outside, so give your porch and deck a good cleaning as well. Put away the snow blower and shovels and bring out the mowers, rakes and gardening tools. Next weekend you can get hubby to do the yard!

inding the right accessories to complete your home and create the right atmosphere is an art. Peggy Reid and Ashley Bryant from Reid & Siemonsen Design Group have some decorating advice for incorporating luxury accessories into your home. “We are seeing a lot more colour coming into our designs this year,” says Peggy, the owner of Reid & Siemonsen. “For a long time it was neutral on neutral, but just like women’s fashion, home design has moved more towards bolder colours, which is exciting to design with.”

Great Room

The great room is the main focus for decorating enthusiasts, as it tends to be one of the most popular spaces for families to gather. Peggy recommends choosing an exciting fabric as a jumpingoff point. By finding a fabric you love, you can begin to pull colour and pattern into your space. Mixing patterns can add a lot of interest in the room as long as you remember to have a variety of

scale, texture and prints, while keeping consistency with colour. Keeping larger pieces of upholstered furniture neutral allows you more flexibility for art and accessories. A simple way to update your room is by changing light fixtures or drapery hardware to warmer metal colours such as gold or brass. This can go a long way toward staying on trend. “Everything was stainless or chrome for a long time, but things are moving towards warmer tones now,” Peggy explains.

Dining Room

Creating a fabulous tablescape can add fun and interest for entertaining guests. A bright floral arrangement can set the tone for the room for each season. White or neutral coloured plate sets will also be advantageous for these seasonal place settings and allow you to change napkins, candles and other accessories easily. The dining room is also an ideal space to have a more daring paint colour or interesting wallpaper. Glamorous drapes can also add a dramatic element to the room. Choosing the right chandelier enhances the room and is often the focal point and can create some sparkle to the space.

Master Bedroom

Similar to the great room, this is a wonderful room to experiment with fabrics and use different textures. “A lot of men don’t like having too many decorative pillows on the bed,” Peggy laughs. “But it does look glamorous and romantic to have a variety of colours and layers. The bedding itself can be fairly neutral, but adding pillows with fabrics such as silks and velvets will provide a luxurious feel to your space.”

Kitchen

A great way to add colour, pattern and texture to the kitchen is through an interesting backsplash, which can be a combination of metal, glass or stone. If you have an island or bar, you can have a lot of fun adding different fabrics on the seats of the bar stools. With metal or wooden stools you can add a pop of colour by painting the whole frame to suit the room. In every room of your home, carefully selected home accessories can add the finishing touch to pull it all together. ppliances can make or break the look of a room. Replacing ’70s appliances with shiny, stainless steel models can bring a kitchen into the 21st century more effectively than any other upgrade. Go Pro Just because you’re not a professional chef doesn’t mean your kitchen shouldn’t be professional grade. Lines like the new Frigidaire professional suite come in standard sizes (minimizing or even eliminating the amount of renovations needed to install them) and are priced so the average homeowner can afford them. The great part about the aesthetic of professional style appliances? They have a truly classic look that can seamlessly fit into any kitchen style. Last But Not Least Jumping the gun on appliance purchases can cost you in the long run if you haven’t properly planned the space. Make sure you extensively plan the layout of your kitchen. If an 18-inch dishwasher just won’t cut it, make sure you delegate space for a full 24-inch model. Don’t get stuck with appliances you don’t like just because you didn’t plan properly. Do sweat the smaLL stuff There are many small details that can slip your mind, or you don’t even think of in the first place. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen fridge doors that can’t

It’s easy BeING GreeN Old appliances have a financial and environmental cost. A new, energy efficient fridge can save you up to $200 a year, meaning you recoup the purchase price in a couple years. ENERGY STAR compliant dishwashers not only use 50 to 75 per cent less energy than older models, but also much less water – as little as three gallons for a full cycle. If three gallons sounds like a lot, keep in mind you can use almost 10 times that by washing dishes by hand. Front load washers can cost as little as $20/year to operate, and since 90 per cent of the energy used to wash clothes is spent heating the water, switching to cold water can make a noticeable difference. DoN’t Let the eLectrIc sLIDe Appliances eat up a lot of the electrical bandwidth in your home. Laundry and kitchen appliances alone can take up a big portion of your panel, and when you add in things like air conditioning, it can get tight. This is especially true if you have an income suite in your home, which means two kitchens and often two washers and dryers. We recently shot an episode of Income Property where the homeowners ended up having to upgrade their electrical panel to accommodate the addition of a dishwasher and upstairs laundry. This was above and beyond what they had planned to spend because it never occurred to them that their current electrical panel wasn’t sufficient. If you have a newer home, chances are this won’t be an issue. However if you’re buying an older home (like many in the core areas of most major cities), it’s something you may need to consider. Coolest Plants for 2015

curmudgeonly gardener can’t resist purchasing at least one. The information that follows has been assembled purely from my own point of view as the highlighted plants are either what I want or already have in my wee garden. My actual list is much too long for publication, so this select offering is, shall we say, closer to the top.

pring is such a difficult time for me. Indeed the weather is improving (or so the story goes), the garden is starting to yawn, stretch and open its sleepy eyes. There’s so much to get excited about, where does a person start? Specifically, which plants should be highlighted, which list presents itself as the absolute “got to have” and what might I be growing this year? Naturally, there is a parade of the new and potentially most popular perennials, a bastion of brightly coloured annuals, albeit some looking nothing like their original ancestors. Lest we forget the hanging containers posseting petunias from every conceivable corner and so cleverly displayed that even the most

Bergenia “Flirt” is a handsome yet diminutive selection of the ever-hardy and trusted workhorses of its parentage, great for the shadier Canadian garden. Typical of this genus, the foliage ranges from a dark glossy green through stages of red and maroon. Considered to be an evergreen, I have yet to appreciate that aspect, as my plants are under snow cover for the longest time. This wee gem offers the small pocket gardener a wonderful perennial addition with promise of pink flower clusters early in the season. It’s also for those who have just a corner to add a new selection. Coleus Colour Clouds “spiCey” is one of a great many new introductions in this popular and easily grown genre. For the past number of years, Coleus has regained immense popularity and with good reason. New gardeners have little to no difficulty achieving success with Coleus; their range of foliage shape, size and massive range of colourful combination are intriguing and their price point is usually reasonable. HeucHera “Forever purple” provides an exhilarating contrast to the popular lime green foliage of many plants so popular this decade. Heuchera are amongst my favourite perennials because they are basically worry-free and reliable in my zone 2b garden with a decent leaf mould cover for winter. The selection abounds sporting vivid coloured foliage, a vast array of leaf shapes and, in many cases, attractive venation in the leaves. “Forever Purple” will find a home in my front garden in the dappled shade of an American Elm tree with neighbours of Thalictrum, perennial Dianthus and a lovely perennial geranium for texture. THalicTrum “BlaCk stoCkings” plays a critical role in my front, southeast-facing garden. I just love this perennial and will continue to sing its praises at every possible opportunity. She stands tall with her jet black stems supporting a filamentous foliage reminiscent of Columbine. When she blooms, typically later in the season, great clouds of powder puff purple fill her corner on centre stage of the garden. The Winnipeg winds haven’t bothered her yet as she defiantly stands her ground. Totally hardy, massively reliable and above all gorgeous — gee, do you think I’m fond of this one? Have fun shopping, studying the new and notables and, of course, play in your garden. It’s been a long winter indoors. tolerant or preferred plant, Coleus can be nipped backed to encourage a bushier habit; the cuttings root can very easily be reinstalled in your garden or container. Colourful splashes in a darker corner of the garden act as punctuation marks and will liven up even the dankest landscape. It’s a very popular container-grown plant for balcony gardeners and those of us who are short of room in our landscapes and must hang plants.
