write this as I spend some time in Banff, Alberta—deep in fresh snow, bathed in blazing sunlight and surrounded by the majestic Rockies. Even though it’s still midFebruary, the singing birds and melting snow on downtown streets remind me that spring is around the corner now. On my walks in the invigorating fresh air, I joyfully anticipate the new season ahead. It is in the approaching spring season that we also anticipate and plan for new homes, home renovations, gardening, backyard entertaining, time at the lake, and being outside with family and friends. It’s the perfect time to be making plans, and this issue of FineHomes Regina provides information and an array of products and services to assist you in bringing those plans to fruition. This edition provides a stunning variety of products and services offered by businesses in Regina and area. I am continually impressed by the products and professional services that these businesses showcase and offer to help you make your homes even finer. On that note, we congratulate Century 21 Dome Realty Inc. on being recognized for excellence, as displayed in their special feature. We hope that you enjoy our editorials on fencing, bedroom design for rest and rejuvenation, efficient kitchen design and layouts, and green principles for efficient building. Our homes are our castles, and whether it’s a relaxing bedroom on the inside or an aesthetic and practical fence on the outside, our homes greatly impact and reflect on who we are and our wellbeing. Our national columnists again offer common-sense advice and inspiring information. Meredith Heron provides tips on getting the most “bang for your buck” in kitchen and bathroom design. Shell Busey weighs in on possible side effects of home energy upgrades, and Ken Beattie gets your engines started for spring gardening. Enjoy this spring issue, and keep it on your coffee table for hours of reading pleasure.

Just like indoor walls, backyard fencing provides a barrier between you and the outside world, clearly designating the space within as truly yours. Similar to every other design element of your backyard, there are plenty of options for the look, material and function of
As with all aspects of home design, the materials available to homeowners depend on their budgets. Smith says that in executive neighbourhoods, new trends include ornamental railings, glass and wrought iron, different architectural sun shades and much more.

people living in one building, it decreases an individual’s occupied space and carbon footprint. It also helps if the condo developer’s goal is to build an environmentally responsible complex. Those working in the downtown or nearby area have the option of walking or biking to work. If you do not work in the downtown area, living there can still provide you with access to greener transportation. Odds are most bus lines originate, end or transfer in the downtown area, and this is definitely the case for Regina. In the past few years, Regina residents have noticed the increase in traffic. Bragging to your friends in other large Canadian cities that you can easily get anywhere in Regina in 15 minutes no longer holds true as the city’s population grows. Living downtown with easier access to public transportation eliminates the stress of driving in rush hour traffic and maybe even the need for a vehicle—again another green incentive. Condos are also very safe. With controlled access like key fobs to enter buildings, suites and parkades, security is heightened. Key fobs are keyless, code-entry systems that can be easily deactivated if the device is lost or falls into the wrong hands. Condos usually have security at the entrance and security cameras. You are also a part of the condo community with other people who will also want to keep the place as safe as possible.

So, is condominium living for you? Condos are certainly affordable, and can accommodate singles, couples and families. Depending upon the facility, you may even have access to some excellent builtin amenities, such as fitness facilities and a swimming pool. With a number of new condo developments well on their way to being all sold, Reginans seem to be convinced of the benefits of living downtown. According to the RDNP, downtown residents will have access to new and improved public spaces and events, access to community services, and a new and reinforced commercial base with places to shop, dine and entertain.

cott Tresek fell into his work with granite by accident, and now he’s all about rock. An IT guy by trade, Scott was all about computers until he and a friend decided to try their hand at making concrete countertops. “We thought it would be fun to try working with concrete. My friend needed a bathroom countertop, and we headed into the garage to see what we could do,” says Scott. “People would watch what we were doing with a lot of interest.” These experiments in concrete led to a few jobs after work and on weekends, and Scott thought he’d created himself a nice little hobby business.

In 2008, Scott turned his attention to granite and set up a booth at the home show in Regina. That weekend at the home show turned Scott’s hobby into a full-fledged business and total career change. “We booked more jobs than we thought possible,” says Scott. “Back then, we were flying by the seat of our pants.” Fast-forward five years, and CNG Stone is the go-to place for all things granite. Scott and his team at CNG work hard to make sure their product is like no other. “We ensure seams on our countertops are virtually invisible,” says Scott. “And we polish countertop edges so that
they are as good as, or better than the top surface.” Not only is a CNG granite countertop beautiful, but the customer service experience is top-notch. CNG is about setting expectations for their customers, and meeting them in an honest and timely manner. “We’ll work with any customer to select the right stone for their project, create the perfect piece, and install it in a reasonable amount of time,” says Scott. “Once booked, we can get most pieces installed within two weeks.” Customer Janel Casemore appreciates CNG’s commitment to timely service. “Our install was done within our very
limited time constaints,” says Janel. “My husband and I love our brand-new kitchen and we can’t say enough about CNG. I highly recommend them.” CNG Stone customer Bev Carlson knows all about CNG’s commitment to the quality of their work and customer service. Bev recently built a new home in White City, and needed granite countertops for her kitchen, main bathroom and master en-suite. “I shopped around extensively for our granite work, and picked CNG Stone—a decision I am so glad I made,” says Bev. “From start to finish, CNG was terrific. They were ready to answer any question I had, treated me so well, and their granite work is stunning.” Bev was so happy with CNG Stone’s work that she booked them again to install more granite in her home’s final bathroom. “It was just a great experience all-around,” says Bev. “Their prices are competitive, ABOVE Janel Casemore, Chris Hartel

their work is amazing, and their customer service is outstanding. I wish all builders and contractors were like CNG Stone.” For customer Michelle Bourque, choosing CNG Stone was a no-brainer. “I looked around at the options available for granite countertops in Regina,” says Michelle. “Not only was the pricing excellent, but the customer service was top-notch.” Michelle had spotted a beautiful granite countertop at a local kitchen cabinet company and discovered the stone had been provided by CNG. She contacted Susan Dayman, customer service manager, at CNG, to ask about the stone. “Susan told me that while the stone was beautiful, it had turned out to be a poor choice. CNG had nothing but problems with it, and Susan told me there’s no way she would sell it to me,” says Michelle. “I knew then that CNG is about way more than just selling their products; they really care about their customers and want to make sure they are happy with their countertops they choose.” CNG installed countertops in Michelle’s kitchen and bathrooms, and she couldn’t be more pleased with the results. “I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend CNG. They are responsive, helpful and honest,” adds Michelle. “With them, you know that you are more than just a number.”
For Scott, it all boils down to perfection. “I want every piece that we do to be perfect, and I want every customer that chooses us to be happy when we’re done,” says Scott. “Every countertop we do is beautiful, durable and worryfree.” To see what Scott, Susan and the rest of the team at CNG Stone can do for your project, visit their showroom at 1445 Scarth Street, Regina or online at cngstone.com. Kitchen sinks often harbour more bacteria than the floor or toilet in a public washroom. Rinse down the sink and disinfect it. You may not think to remove the knobs on your stove very often, and you may wish you hadn’t. The knobs are designed to be removed easily so than you can clean all the grime behind them. Use a gentle cleanser such as vinegar.

If the reservoir is a yellow colour it is time to clean; the discoloration is likely caused by mineral residue. The best way to clean is to fill the reservoir with equal parts of water and white vinegar, and run the machine without any coffee grounds.

Making Your House exterior Beautiful By Doris Wang
P
eople often say it’s what’s on the inside that counts. But for homeowners, the outside of their house is just as important as the inside. Having the right shingles on the roof and weather-resistant sidings is imperative in the harsh Saskatchewan weather. That’s why it is essential to find the right place and people to help you renovate the exterior of your home. At Bar-T Construction, the experienced staff and experts are always ready and happy to help you.

Established in 1983, Bar-T Construction is a family-run-and-operated business. For the past 30 years, they have been helping homeowners, homebuilders and general contractors all over Saskatchewan and Alberta. Terry Pastuch, owner, and his father started with solely installing siding in Regina in 1978 under their previous company, T&T Siding. In 1983, they were asked by some builders and general contractors they worked with if they could also supply products. In response, Terry and his father, Tom, started Bar-T, and Terry became the sole owner of the company in 1988.
Terry’s wife, daughters and other family members are carrying on Tom’s passion for helping his customers. Terry’s wife, Lynn, is the office manager, while his daughters, Crystal Korchynski and Allyson Slopinski, are the operations and safety manager and the company’s controller, respectively. Bar-T also has more than 20 employees, but according to Crystal, they treat each like family. Some employees have been working for the company since its beginning. For many years, the company operated out of a small office and shop on Fleury
Street. In 2001, they moved to their current location on Park Street, which includes a showroom for all their products, office space, a back shop and yard space. Bar-T supplies, installs and retails its products. The company changed its focus from mainly siding, soffits, fascia and eavestrough to a complete exterior finishing company. Bar-T offers numerous options for your exterior renovation including roofing, sidings, exterior insulation, acrylic stucco, railing, fencing, decking, Dryvit Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems, and All Weather Windows. You can also find vinyl sidings, cultured stones and other products on display in the showroom. Bar-T also offers energyefficient products for environmentally conscientious customers. The company places a huge emphasis on the quality of their products, and Terry and Allyson recently traveled to Las Vegas for the International Builder’s Show. “Attending conferences and shows like this keeps us updated on the new products out there,” says Crystal. “It’s important to us that we are using new and innovative products for our customers.” Not only are the products important, but customer service is extremely important for Bar-T as well. Customers can be assured that there will always be somebody there to answer their questions and guide them through the process of renovating the exterior of their house. Aside from renovation, Bar-T also provides its services to new residential and commercial work. Currently, they are working on the exteriors of two hotels in Yorkton among many other projects across the province. Bar-T’s excellent service has garnered them ten Best Exterior Renovation awards. The company’s owner and staff look forward to continuing to provide their services to new customers and old friends. FHR

Good Fences:
Making Good Neighbours and Beautiful Backyards by Jamie Fischer
A
backyard used to be a place to put your barbeque; today, it has become an extension of our home. Like our homes, it’s all in the details when it comes to creating your perfect oasis. Patios, outdoor furniture and landscaping are always big priorities for home owners, but one detail that’s often forgotten is the backyard fence. Just like indoor walls, backyard fencing provides a barrier between you and the outside world, clearly designating the space within as truly yours. Similar to every other design element of your backyard, there are plenty of options for the look, material and function of your fencing. Lee Smith is an independent contractor in Saskatchewan, and he says people build fences for privacy, security, and of course, to enhance the beauty of their
24

Regina
homes. “It’s really all three of those. It also defines your property,” Smith says. When deciding on a design, Smith says one thing to always consider is your neighbourhood; keep your choice within the community’s current look. He also noted that in some areas, fencing codes are even included in builders’ guidelines to ensure that homes look uniform. As with all aspects of home design, the materials available to homeowners depend on their budgets. Smith says that in executive neighbourhoods, new trends include ornamental railings, glass and wrought iron, different architectural sun shades and much more. “There are many things you can do if you have the money,” Smith says, noting that he doesn’t see demand for these details and materials as often because the market for them is smaller.
Regardless of a home owner’s decision to go with glass panels or a white picket fence, Smith says there are a few basic rules to always follow. The first step to putting up a fence is to learn the rules regarding fencing in your municipality. Several bylaws govern what kind of fences can be placed on lots. For example, some municipalities require higher fences for properties with outdoor pools. Another example of a specific regulation in Regina is for corner lots. In the Queen City, you have to be careful not to erect a fence that’s too tall on corner lots because it can obscure sight lines for cars on the road. To ensure a safe jobsite, homeowners also need to contact SaskEnergy, and have gas lines marked before starting the building process.
Another important step to take before any boards go up is to learn where your property line truly lies. Fences don’t always perfectly ride the property line, so just because a previous fence was up, it doesn’t mean that it was in the correct spot. Property lines can be confirmed through your local municipality. Climate should also be a factor in deciding on a new fence. Saskatchewan has scorching summers and brutal winters, so choosing a material that can take Mother Nature’s wrath will save homeowners money in the long run. When it does come time to put the fence up, leave it to the pros. “You can do it yourself, but it’s going to be some of the hardest work you’ve ever done, and it’s not worth it,” Smith says. “What you can do in a week, a professional can do in a weekend.” Ultimately, using a professional will save you time, but it will also ensure your new fence is installed properly. Lastly, Smith says that the most important thing a homeowner can do when building a new fence is make sure the people on the other side are in the loop. “One of the biggest things is communicating with your neighbour,” Smith says. Neighbours often split the cost of fences, so finding a design that works for both homes’ style and budget can save a homeowner from having to front the entire bill. Patty Creelman had a new backyard fence installed by Smith in the summer of 2012. She redid her entire fence, which meant teaming up with two different sets of neighbours. Originally, Creelman wanted a no-maintenance metal fence, but after some discussion with her neighbours, they all agreed to build a cedar fence that will stand up to the elements. “Communication was very important to us because you want to keep your neighbours happy,” Creelman says. “It worked out well; now we have the side of the fence we want on our side and so do they.” Whatever your neighbourhood or personal tastes, here’s to good fences, good neighbours and beautiful backyards! Charity Begins at Home. . .
. . . and so does corporate responsibility. CENTURY 21® Dome Realty agents and staff are committed to Easter Seals and sending kids to camp. Each year, CENTURY 21® Dome agents and staff organize and volunteer at numerous fundraising events and also donate themselves to this cause. As the CENTURY 21® charity of choice internationally, our office has been invited to experience a number of events where we can see firsthand the incredible difference this organization makes. In 2013, our company is fortunate to be involved with a corporate matching sponsorship program with Sask Abilities. This program will allow other businesses in the communities of Saskatchewan to donate, knowing their contribution will be matched by our company.
$60,485.74 We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our team of agents and staff, but we feel the best accomplishment is to be a top fundraising office in Canada supporting Easter Seals year after year. The teamwork and hard work of our offices to raise funds for children with disabilities to be able attend summer camp, and then to see the smiles we put on those children's faces, is an amazing feeling. Camp Easter Seal is about helping children living with disabilities to be able to experience opportunities that they may be unable to experience elsewhere. Since 1994 CENTURY 21® Dome in Regina has been raising funds for Camp Easter Seals in Watrous, Saskatchewan, and in 2010 hit their milestone of more than $1 million dollars raised! CENTURY 21® system members around the world have supported Easter Seals since 1979 as their national “charity of choice” through local fundraising activities and volunteerism. To date, more than $100 million has been raised for this charity. Heavenly SLEEP
Rest and Rejuvenation in Your Bedroom BY JULIE MUSHYNSKY
G
etting quality rest and sleep greatly affects your life. A good night’s sleep increases work productivity, improves overall health, helps maintain your weight, decreases stress and increases energy. To get the benefits of proper sleep, make your bedroom more conducive to catching those “40 winks.” Studies show that technological devices in the bedroom can leave you feeling restless by morning, so they should be taken out of the bedroom. Having your smart phone or laptop on the night stand is a distraction and can make it difficult for your brain to relax. Some studies suggest that people should turn off all electronics at least one hour prior to going to bed. So what should we put in our bedrooms? “It is all about creating a relaxed and cozy experience,” says local designer Cindy Rogan. Colour, texture and lighting are details to help create that restful space. In terms of colours, “you will want those that are more subdued rather than alarming,” says Cindy. Jewel tones, neutrals and pastels with soft accents like lavender and sea foam seem to be the trend and the most calming. “Organic” is another word that describes the colour trend, adding more light greens and
40
FineHomes
Regina
grey undertones. The all-white, “hotel look” creates that pristine, clean feeling. Overall, the dominant colour should not be anything bright. “Bright yellow is not a good choice, it will wake you up,” says local professional designer, Holli Appelquist. Using more restful, calming shades doesn’t mean you can’t add a touch of excitement. “You can add a punch of colour like emerald green, red or charcoal grey. Just keep it subtle and layer the colours,” says Holli. Tone-on-tone printed fabrics, small patterns or accent pillows are a good way to add that bit of colour and can be easily changed to match your mood or season. Holli advises that is if you sprinkle the colour in the room three times, it will coordinate. So if you decide to use emerald green, use it in a pillow, a throw blanket and a vase for a complete look. Despite these colour recommendations, creating that relaxed space is about choosing elements of a bedroom that are unique to each individual and what affects you. “It depends on what the person finds calming, and that’s why I am tough on colours and never really follow trends,” says Cindy. Textures should also be more “organic.” Wallpaper is a great way to achieve great textures and sheen, and can add interest without looking overly done. The grasscloth or bamboo design is calming; partnering it with more textured fabrics like velvets and sateen is popular. “Some wallpapers can add the tranquil elegance and sophistication that paint cannot,” says Holli. Lighting is important for uninterrupted sleep and the darker, the better. Proper drapery is important for light control. The “hotel look” is popular, with heavy pull drapes and curtains that block out all light and give that cocoon-like sensation. Drapes also pull the room together and provide an elegant look. “It doesn’t matter if you use drapes from a second-hand shop or have them custom-made—putting in drapes elevates the room from basic to finished,” explains Holli. You should also aim to keep the room open and create what Holli describes as “visual rest.” Take the clutter out. Rather than covering every wall, choose one large piece of art, not several small pieces; you should only have one focal point. A new trend is having a separate, closed-off room in the bedroom to act as a “sitting place.” These rooms are about having a space to watch the morning news, read the paper and have a coffee while the other person is still sleeping. “Usually these types of rooms are found in larger homes. It is big in Calgary, but you’re seeing it more and more in Regina,” says Cindy. Since we spend about a third of our lives sleeping, a good quality mattress is also important. But don’t confuse yourself with coil count and brand names. “Mattresses should be comfortable and durable, and comfort is something only you can decide,” says Saskatchewan retail owner, Mark Stevens. Test the mattress out and purchase what feels good to you, not what is more expensive. Bedrooms are not just for sleeping; they’re also a place to spend time with your partner and wind down at the end of the day. Both designers suggest soft lighting for the bedroom with more drumstyle fixtures. Use dark lamp shades that reflect light downward for bedside reading. Proper, multifunctional lighting with dimming capabilities can help you easily switch your bedroom from brightly lit to sleep sanctuary. It’s all about a good night’s sleep. FHR

“Homes will feature three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths, and are finished to the high standards of the Spark series.” These townhomes will be affordably priced, keeping with Artisan’s value-formoney philosophy. If you’re looking for a single family detached home, Artisan is starting construction on a large number of Spark homes located in Harbour Landing and Edgewater. In these two communities, both laneway homes and garage front homes will be available. The 50+ homes planned for build in 2013 will have the same care and attention to detail as the Glide townhomes. “Our
Spark homes are considered an ‘entrylevel’ home, but you’d never know it by the plans or the finishes,” says Ms. Lam. Like Glide, these Spark homes will feature open concept designs that provide the homeowner with flexible living spaces. “Our home buyers often remark on how their homes feel much larger in square footage than they actually are,” adds Ms. Lam “It’s just another way we can provide our customers with maximum value for the money.” Custom homes are also part of Artisan’s repertoire. Artisan is a custom home builder, offering flexibility and luxury at levels even higher than the Spark standards, if that’s imaginable. The company can design a home to the owner’s specifications, or they can choose from Artisan’s many custom design concepts. Homes can be built in new or pre-existing neighbourhoods while receiving a 10-year home warranty that guarantees comprehensive protection to the owner. To learn more about Artisan Design Build, and tour their homes in person, visit their showhomes opening in April 2013. They are located at 5274 Aviator Crescent and 5301 Mitchinson Way in Harbour Landing, as well as 244N Thauberger Road in Edgewater. t may be that the two very best features of Regina’s newest luxury condominium development are not to be found on the architect’s designs. Those drawings will tell you about the elegant European Tudor styling of the exterior of Cornerstone Heights, located in southwest Regina in Harbour Landing. They will also indicate spacious living quarters, with nine-foot ceilings and upgraded trim packages that boast hardwood floors and granite countertops. But the most attractive features are beyond the skill of any carpenter to craft. They are the bounty of sunlight and fresh air the development offers its residents.

Bordered by abundant green space and walking paths, the Reimer Crossing development will attract buyers looking to enjoy the call of native prairie birds and a cool breeze on a summer night. Floor-to-ceiling windows and a glassenclosed balcony ensure that none of the sun’s precious rays will be wasted during our short winter days. Project manager, Graham Toth, says the decision to convert the balconies into sunrooms was inspired; the rooms are covered and insulated, and are completely enclosed in high-quality glass. “Not only is it glassed-in, but there are large doors you can open to have the air
coming in, to give you the best of both worlds,” says Toth. “In Regina there are only a few weeks a year that you can really enjoy a balcony. We wanted something that people could use as often as they like, but still have the look and feel of a patio.” The concept also adds more usable space to the unit. “Residents could decide to run heat into the balcony area, which would make it comfortable year-round. We think it’s going to be a very attractive feature.” The development also features heated parking, a guest suite, a fitness room and large, indoor heated storage compartments on the lower level.
Reimer Crossing

That feature will also be very popular, according to Toth. “We know a lot of projects have storage in the parking garage, but based on talking to other developers, it can get quite dusty and dirty. The storage units we’ve developed are in the basement, which makes for a nicer environment, and they have access to the elevator and the stairs.” Cornerstone Heights is part of Reimer Crossing being developed by Reimer Custom Homes & Commercial. The walkout townhomes of Phase I are completed and fully occupied. The luxury condos that make up Phase II are under construction and first possessions are expected to take place in late 2013. About 30 per cent of Cornerstone Heights has already been sold, but there are a nice range of sizes and layouts still available. Toth says the quality and detail for which Reimer homes are renowned is evident in the luxury condos.
The show home is located across the street from the build at 4837 Trinity Way. There, potential buyers can see beautiful refinements such as glass backsplashes, upgraded cabinetry package and tile in entrance and bathrooms. “We’re pleased with how this is coming together,” says Toth. “It’s very satisfying to know that those who buy in this building are excited about their new home. That’s what really drives us.” Harbour Landing was designed to be a diverse community, with starter homes, condos and townhomes, as well as larger custom homes. With the restaurants and shopping centre nearby, the convenience factor is high. Toth says some of the first buyers at Cornerstone Heights have grown children and grandchildren elsewhere in Harbour Landing and want to be nearby; it is a perfect fit for them. Business people and frequent travellers are drawn to the easy access to the
airport and downtown, as well as the main highways. “It’s really one of the best communities in terms of design that’s come to Regina in quite a few years,” says Toth. “The way the development played out, there’s something for everyone. It’s a gem and has been received quite well.” FHR

eace of Mind HomeCheck is a family-run business founded in July 2012 by Theresa and Jason Ayerst. This Saskatchewan-raised couple started the business to provide their clients with exactly what the name implies: peace of mind. “We’re home and pet owners, too,” says Theresa, “We have two small dogs, and last summer, we realized two days before leaving for a camping trip that we had no family or friends nearby to check on our house and pets. I ended up paying my best friend to drive from Lumsden to do this a few times a day.” Theresa laughs about it now. “It was then that we realized what a great business idea this was.”

Peace of Mind HomeCheck encourages people to read the fine print on their home insurance policies. Most policies state that your home must be checked once every 24-hour period during the winter months, and if it’s not, insurance won’t cover any damages. Without coverage, you could be facing hefty bills. “We’ve heard many stories about people being away during the winter months, when their furnace quit, and the pipes froze and burst,” says Theresa. “Each one was shocked to find out that they had no insurance coverage. Our goal is to share this information so people don’t find this out too late, and we want them to know that our service is there to help them out.”
There are many other reasons to have your home checked daily. Yearround concerns include security and overall peace of mind. Peace of Mind HomeCheck can provide signs of daily activity within your home, and they will even check to make sure your deep freeze is still running. Theresa adds, “One of our clients, who had been away for a month years ago, and had nobody checking her home, came home to find she’d left her media components turned on, and fried her TV and amp.” Why would you choose Peace of Mind HomeCheck over your family, neighbours or other home-checking companies in Regina? Peace of Mind HomeCheck is insured and bonded, and only highquality professionals are allowed access
to your home. Jason and Theresa currently do all the home checks, and Theresa stresses, “We would never let anyone in your home that we wouldn’t allow into ours.” Peace of Mind HomeCheck aims to be a “one-stop shop”. Besides home checks, they provide services such as shovelling snow, lawn mowing, caring for pets, and even checking on elderly parent(s) or grandparent(s) daily. They follow a 17-point checklist during each home visit; it is dated, time stamped, and a copy is left for the homeowner. They also scan it, and email the client a copy. “Our rates are very reasonable,” says Theresa. “We charge $120 per week for daily home checks, and we reward our long-term clients. If you accumulate three weeks service with us, you receive seven days of home-checking, completely free! Our clients are our friends, and we appreciate their business.” Peace of Mind HomeCheck also does quarterly draws for free service; every time you refer a new client who books with them, you receive one additional slip into the draw.
Peace of Mind HomeCheck also believes in giving back to the community. “We’ve partnered up with Big Brothers of Regina in 2013, and will donate $5 from every booking to them,” Theresa proudly adds. “We’re hoping to have a remarkable year to significantly help this great local organization.” FHR

EfficiEnt Building:
green Principles for Saskatchewan Home Owners. By Shane Wolffe
M
any people are under the false impression that “green” is expensive. This is not true, especially when you consider that saving energy is equivalent to saving money. Since the price of fossil fuel energy used in the home is currently around record lows and isn’t going to be getting any cheaper, it makes sense that a home— which is at least a 50-year gamble on the price and availability of energy—is built with energy efficiency in mind. When it comes to building a home, the amount of energy that is used over the home’s lifetime is essentially set in stone in the design stage, before the dirt is even turned. This is why energy efficiency must be planned from the beginning.
climate. For instance, the average yearround temperature in Saskatoon is only 2.5 C. Ouch! Another interesting statistic is that we comprise less than one per cent of the world’s population who live in the world’s coldest climate (hooray for being tough!). Combine this with the fact that in Saskatchewan, we currently use mostly natural gas for our space and water heating needs, and coal fired electricity for running our appliances. It should be no surprise that we have what the statisticians call a very high carbon footprint. In terms of individual usage, we use the most energy per capita in Canada, most of which goes towards heating our homes.
“Green,” or energy efficiency, in Saskatchewan has a slightly different meaning then in most places. As residents of Saskatchewan, we have a very harsh
So with this in mind, “green” in Saskatchewan comes down to three essential principles which are most cost effectively applied in this order:
54
FineHomes
Regina
Reducing the need for energy in general. Reusing energy and materials. Generating or harvesting energy.
In Saskatchewan, reducing the need for heating and cooling energy is much cheaper and easier than producing your own energy. In a home, the cheapest,
easiest and most enduring opportunity for efficiency (and comfort) comes from isolating the usually cold outside from the warm inside on all exterior surfaces by “super-insulating” the structure. This can be accomplished via multiple methods to create a high R-value wall assembly of at least R30. R-value is a measure of the ease at which heat migrates through a material from hot side to cold side. It is typically measured in R-value per inch of a particular material. Some experts believe our walls should be R50 for our climate. Since heat rises, a significant proportion of the heat within most homes is lost through the ceiling, thus a high efficiency roof or ceiling is recommended to be R60. This can be accomplished using 24 inches of blown-in cellulose, or about 8.5 inches of closed cell spray foam. In order to achieve these high R-values, thermal bridging (heat transfer) through low R-value structural components (such as wood or metal studs) must be eliminated. While providing these high R-value assemblies, it is essential to ensure air tightness in order to reduce drafts via uncontrolled air infiltration. Drafts feel cold and are the main source of energy loss in buildings. Drafts are created when components do not fit together correctly or are not properly sealed. They typically occur
around windows, doors, vents and other protrusions in the building envelope. Ensuring air tightness has the benefit of reducing the likeliness of cold spots within the wall. Cold spots are highly undesirable as they are a breeding ground for mould growth. Further efficiencies come by reducing the requirements for water heating (via low flow shower heads and aeration devices) and electricity usage (through ENERGY STAR appliances and LED lighting). Notice how these efficiencies are easily achievable after the building is built. Reusing energy is accomplished via methods such as heat recovery ventilators—which are essential in a super-insulated home— or through drain water heat recovery. Embodied energy is the energy that was used to create, harvest, transport and/or install a material or component. By reusing useful materials we are reducing the need to use energy to create new materials. Embodied energy from former building materials, such as brick and wood, can be reused in a new building to add character and even reduce the cost of the project. If these
This thermal-graphic (heat sensitive) image demonstrates how heat moves through a conventional 2x6 wooden wall stud. The purple lines show the temperature difference between the insulated wall cavity and the studs. It was 22 C inside and 5 C outside when this image was taken. Note that even the insulated R20 walls lose heat to the outside even at the mild outdoor air temperature of 5 C.

materials are locally sourced, then the lack of energy needed for transporting them to the construction site gives you bonus green kudos. A simple and cost effective method of producing energy onsite is possible via implementing passive solar design. Properly implemented passive solar design heats your home in the winter and keeps it cool in the summer for no cost. The best part about passive solar design—other than being able to sun bath within your home during the winter—is that all it takes to implement is awareness on the part of the designer, willingness to place more windows facing south, and a south facing lot, give or take 30 degrees from true south. If passive solar design is implemented, then storing heat energy within the home by implementing thermal mass is a cost effective and usually easy
56
FineHomes

method of capturing and storing energy from the sun. After the aforementioned efficiencies are implemented, it then becomes cost effective to really “go green” by producing or generating energy via the “sexy” renewable energy technologies such as photo voltaic panels (solar), solar thermal water heating, solar thermal air heating, wind turbines, and ground source heat pumps, commonly called geothermal. Implementing the three principles discussed in this article will not only reduce your energy costs and make your home more energy efficient, but it will be more comfortable, more valuable, and even safer in the event of a winter emergency. You could say that implementing these solutions in your home make it truly Future Proof®. FHR

Global Property Inspections can serve you with professionalism to make an informed decision. Decisions, decisions, decisions … buy or renovate, and where do you start? Mike Holmes knows that many people first think of renovating by upgrading the kitchen or bathroom, but he believes it is important to fix from the outside in, and we agree. Too many homeowners don’t realize that a problem with your home’s exterior will eventually be a problem with your home’s interior. How sad it would be to invest $10,000 or more in renovations to later discover mold due to an undetected exterior leak, which means redoing the renovations. Global Property Inspections (GPI) provides infrared thermography as a standard inspection service, bringing surprises like this to the forefront. drawings for an addition on a home in the Crescents, while maintaining the home’s aesthetic heritage,” says Kelly Nadler, owner of KRN Residential Design. “It was a real honour to be recognized by the city for our work.” “Whether you already have some firm ideas for your new home or addition, or are starting from scratch, we can help you through the home design process,” says Kelly. “We work with every client carefully to ensure we capture their essence in the home’s design.” The
team at KRN Residential Design walks every client through the process, first by meeting to discuss the client’s vision, needs, lifestyle and budget. “We ask a lot of questions. We discuss what the client’s present and future needs will be,” says Kelly. “For example, the client will be raising a young family in the home now, but will need an in-law suite further down the road.” Since buying or building a home is often the largest financial transaction someone makes in their life, the KRN design team makes sure that the client is fully engaged in the design process.
After the client’s needs and wants are established, KRN Residential Design creates a set of construction drawings for the client to take to a builder for construction. KRN can also help the client through the process of engaging a builder. “Sometimes clients come to us with a builder selected,” says Kelly. “They may also need help finding the right builder to construct their home. No matter the situation, we can provide assistance.” KRN has experience with many of Regina’s builders, large or small. “We can help clients choose the builder that is right for them and their budget: anything from luxurious, top-of-the-line to simpler and more economical,” adds Kelly. “We see firsthand the work of local builders, so we know which builder would suit which project.” In addition to working with builders, KRN Residential Design can also help their clients navigate the world of contractors and trades. “We have connections to the trade community here in Regina,” says Kelly. “Not only can we match clients with builders, we can also recommend the right trade for each project.” Whether it’s for aesthetic features such as cabinets and flooring, or for building features like framing and electrical, KRN can point their clients in the right direction. Downtown ConDo Living: Expanding Your Living Choices By Julie Mushynsky

n many large cities, the downtown area is a hub of activity and a large part of the city’s identity. In collaboration with several public and private stakeholders, the City of Regina drafted the Regina Downtown Neighbourhood Plan (RDNP) in 2009. The RDNP aims to grow Regina’s downtown area and develop it into a city hub over the next 20 years. Included in the RDNP is a plan to add 5,000 new residents in urban housing to help support the initiative.
The plan’s first objective is to attract 25 per cent of Regina’s projected residential growth to the downtown area to live, ultimately establishing Regina’s Downtown Neighbourhood. This area is bound by 13th Avenue to the south, Osler Street to the east, Angus Street to the west and the CP Rail line to the north. This has sparked a number of developers to start building condos in the downtown and interface areas. Downtown condo living is becoming increasingly more popular across the country, and it certainly has its appeal. Firstly, all the maintenance is done for you. As the population increases in Regina, people are now busier, and simply do not have time to frequently tend to building repairs, the yard or shovel snow. With increasing housing costs and overall living costs in Regina, more families require two incomes, further decreasing the time homeowners have to spend on home maintenance. For those who travel frequently or live elsewhere in the winter, condos allow the lock-and-leave behaviour for extended vacations some people dream about. Many people are becoming more environmentally conscious, and high-density condo living is a move in that direction. With many people living in one building, it decreases an individual’s occupied space and carbon footprint. Regina is on the cusp of some major restructuring changes and revitalization plans. It is an exciting time to be here, and from your own downtown condo, it just might be the perfect place to watch it all unfold. FHR

here is an increasing trend across the country towards downtown condominium living, and Regina is not far behind. Motivated by the 2009 City of Regina’s Downtown Neighbourhood Plan to rejuvenate the area, Centre Square Developments—the local group behind Centre Square Place— envisioned building a residential high-rise that was close to all downtown services. Blending design and lifestyle ideas from North America and Europe, Centre
Square Place offers high-end living consistent with the city’s prospectus: a culturally and commercially diverse and active downtown. Located on the southwest corner of 15th Avenue and Broad Street, Centre Square Place is a signature 71-unit condominium that includes 64 one-and-two-bedroom apartment style condos, five retail spaces, two office units, four penthouses and three two-story townhouses. The company chose the location for its proximity to downtown services.
The developers of Centre Square Place are providing upscale living with the conveniences, cost-savings and freedoms associated with the urban lifestyle. “Urban living is fundamentally about freedom, and our aim is to provide people with dwellings that enhance that freedom,” says Wayne Hydeman, president of Centre Square Developments. Living at Centre Square Place, you will have the freedom to walk or bike to work, to local shops and restaurants and to Regina’s iconic Wascana Park.

Convenience also extends to your leisure life as well. You can extend your holidays by avoiding year-round yard maintenance, and gain free time that can be spent at your summer cabin or winter retreat. The best part: you do not need to come back to rake the yard, mow the lawn or shovel the driveway. Condo maintenance is done for you, and it is easy to pack up and go. As a LEED shadow building, Centre Square Place has several green mechanical elements including high-efficiency ventilation, heat and refrigeration, low-E double-glazed windows, dual-flush toilets, and a storm water retention tank that provides water

for irrigation and heating. “Part of the building lent itself naturally to being green, like the roof-top garden,” explains Hydeman. The rooftop garden is a vegetated roof with patio, walking track, landscaped grass, trees and a barbecue that is irrigated with reclaimed water. “Irrigation for the gardens comes from storm water that we collect, rather than drawing from primary water supply,” says Hydeman. Reduced energy consumption means lower costs for the buyer. “Being green benefits the project, the city and the people.” Centre Square Place is committed to savings. With their emphasis on energy conservation, the developers
have selected mechanical equipment that will be more efficient to conserve natural resources, and provide financial savings for their clients. “The mechanical components of this building will lower the costs borne by the owners by two to three dollars per square foot per year,” states Hydeman. Not to mention, if you are walking to work, you are saving on fuel and maintenance costs for your vehicle. Centre Square Place also has recycling included in the condo fees, as well as a dedicated bike storage room. Ranging in size from 900 to 2,000 square feet, all one-and-two-bedroom suites come with a den, and boast excellent views of Regina’s infinite
horizons, including the Legislative building, downtown and Wascana Park. The rooftop garden offers 360 degree, scenic views—a perfect spot from which to watch the Canada Day fireworks.

After a busy fall and early winter, 65 to 70 per cent of the suites are sold, including all the apartment style one-bedroom units. Clients can now choose from several two-bedroom and townhouse floor plans, and can still customize some features. Standard finishings for each unit include engineered hardwood, tile entryways and bathrooms, maple cabinetry, granite countertops, LED lighting, stainless steel appliances and window coverings. aside from the spacious suites with spectacular views, it’s the rooftop garden for which the project is named. Headed by Graham Construction, Gardens on Rose is a 12-story condominium property located on

hether or not your kitchen is country, modern, southwestern, or Victorian, efficiency is necessary. Today, the kitchen is the social hub of a house: from family meals and homework sessions to dinner parties and entertaining. Even those who don’t cook much gravitate towards the kitchen. Kitchen design basics start with the work triangle: the layout of the refrigerator, sink, and stove or oven. In the ideal efficient kitchen there is a connection with the work triangle and the different zones: food, storage, cleaning, preparation, and cooking. One of the best ways to add efficiency to your kitchen space is with an island. Not only does it make food preparation easier with the added counter space, but elements such as a prep sink, range, griddle, or a warming drawer can be

accommodated. Kitchen islands also serve as a handy recycling or waste disposal spot with disguised compartments. Keep in mind how the island will affect the movement of you and your guests; if you have limited space use a portable island with wheels. Because this station makes a good area for guests to chat with the host or cook, ensure the aisles created by the island are adequate. If you are designing a kitchen from scratch, keep in mind the ever-so-handy breakfast nook. To enhance your existing space, consider the surrounding areas. Is there an underused adjoining area you can transform? Perhaps a den or office? The breakfast nook is good for casual family meals or a cup of tea with a few friends. To make the space inviting, adding a fireplace contributes to its charm and casual elements. To make
the area more defined, a raised platform separates it while keeping the nook within the flow and function of the kitchen. Comfortable seating is a must with benches that can also serve as additional storage space. Storage is essential to any kitchen, especially for entertaining. With a recessed hutch, “entertain-ware, such as cutlery or napkins, can easily be displayed and accessed by guests. Another storage solution that serves as an entertainment-must is a walk-in pantry. The usual utilitarian-style space can be modernized using cabinetry, lighting and countertops, serving as a secondary work station if necessary. Guests can use the pantry as a self-serve beverage station with accessible glass racks, ice machine, refrigerated drawers and a wine chiller. Having this area away from the cooking station gives guests an extra hub in which
to mingle, as well as keeps the cook focused on preparing the meal. The dining area itself can be made more efficient by using an appropriate table that can accommodate those eating as well as the place settings and centrepieces. Consider adding a sideboard to serve not only as additional storage, but as a stand for buffet-style meals or an appetizer station. A nice element to have in the dining area are patio doors. This allows natural light to filter in during the day, and gives an option of expanding the area in warmer weather to an outside patio. Lighting cannot be overlooked for an entertainment-efficient kitchen. Mood lighting can be created for evening or formal parties, and even be strategically placed to highlight some of the favorite features of the kitchen (such as the upgraded range or a unique display of dish ware). Natural light is important too, and by adding more windows the kitchen can be brightened. The kitchen is no longer just about food and cooking. This centre serves as the home’s entertaining hotspot. With properly executed form and function, your next dinner party will be a success. FHR

erving Regina since 1996, Artisan Furniture & Woodworking is in the business of creating beautiful kitchens for every customer that walks through their door. Cam Carlson, owner and cabinetmaker, custombuilds every set of kitchen cabinets that come out of his shop, ensuring that his customers get something truly special. “When we design and custom-build our cabinetry, we create every piece specific to the customer, their needs and their space,” says Cam. “With us, every kitchen is different.”

Artisan Furniture & Woodworking builds cabinets for any kitchen, whether it’s new construction or a kitchen renovation. Cam works with his customers to discuss their ideas and plans for the kitchen being created. It all starts with an idea, maybe even a plan or a sketch. Artisan works with every customer to determine their needs, budget and the space they are working with. Every facet of the cabinet’s design—wood choice, joinery and dimensions—is discussed and planned.
Since a new kitchen is a substantial investment, it’s also important to ensure that every detail of the kitchen itself is planned well. Cam highly recommends that customers work with a kitchen designer. “While we design and build the cabinets themselves, a designer can really glean what the kitchen should look like, and where things like appliances should be placed,” says Cam. Once the design of the kitchen and the cabinets is established, Cam and his team build each set of cabinets from scratch— there’s no mass production involved. To ensure that each project is done right, Artisan builds only one set of cabinets at a time. This means that each set of cabinets they produce gets their full attention, from design to installation. “If I could give just one piece of advice to someone thinking about building a new kitchen, it is to get educated,” says Cam. “There’s so much to think
about: from the space you are working with, to your budget, lifestyle and timelines. It’s so important to really think about and plan your kitchen well. It’s your money, so make sure you spend it wisely.” If you’re considering new kitchen cabinets, or a total kitchen renovation, Cam is ready to help you get your vision onto paper, and then into reality. The first step is to call or come by and see what Artisan Furniture & Woodworking can do for your project. Even if you just have an idea, visiting their showroom can help you start the process of getting your own unique and beautiful kitchen just the way you want. Customizable features can include adding buttons, stamps and many different stitching options. Finally, Leanne and Sharon got a sneak peek at a brand new product exclusive to Budget Blinds. Called the Butterfly Blind and made by Bece, this unique new blind is a sheer roll shade mixed with the light and privacy control of a fabric horizontal shade. The Butterfly Blind has many great fabric and colour options, including neutral browns and greys with faux finishes and textures. The convention was also a time to celebrate for Regina’s Budget Blinds. For the fourth year in a row, Leanne, Sharon and their team were honoured as one of the top 20 franchises in North America among a group of 850 franchises. “It was a great convention to attend,” says
Budget Blinds owner, Leanne. “We got to see what’s new for 2013 so we can bring the latest trends right to our customers, and we received recognition for the hard work we do every day.” At the end of February, Budget Blinds will move into its brand-new home in Regina’s Warehouse District. “We can’t wait to get into our new space. It will be something special for our customers to experience,” says Leanne. Their new location at 8th Avenue and Hamilton Street will feature a one-of-a-kind showroom where you’ll be able to get up close and personal with their many draperies, blinds and window coverings. Bathrooms and Kitchens: Getting Bang for Your design Buck By Meredith heron
O
n January 1, 2013 I retweeted a tweet that said, “less than 90 days until spring.” I thought to myself that I must be getting older if I’m not quite through the winter holidays, and I’m counting down to spring. Spring has always been considered a time of renewal in the world of design; however, I’m seeing more homeowners plan their renewal earlier and earlier. As a designer, this pleases me. It’s always disappointing to have a client contact you about an exciting project, and discover that they have unrealistic expectations regarding planning and timing. If you are in the market for such a renewal in 2013, call your design professional today, and reserve a spot in their roster.
What sort of renewals will give you most “bang for the buck?” Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a launch for Houzz. com in Toronto. They have realized that the Canadian market is exploding in the world of design, and wanted to reach out to designers in Canada to have their work featured on the site. They shared some amazing numbers about how Canadians are spending their design dollars. Bathrooms were the most sought-after inspiration for current design projects, followed closely by kitchens. I was surprised; I would have thought that kitchens outdid bathrooms, but what really surprised me was the “why” behind these numbers. Canadians, unlike their neighbours to the south, renovate to improve the quality of their lives versus improved resale value. This was shocking to me; I’ve always thought Canadians were fiscally conservative, and therefore assumed (wrongfully it would seem) that renovations would be undertaken for resale value first, and for pleasure, second. I’m not one to admit that I was wrong, so let’s just gloss over that part, and get down to the pretty stuff.

Where to get the most “bang” for one’s design dollars in a bathroom renovation? Tile. The big trend in tiles for 2013 is elaborate mosaics. Before the end of the year, you will see a resurgence of Mexican tiles in jewel tones of sapphire and emerald. Moroccan mosaics continue to be huge. We are undertaking a few new bathroom and kitchen projects already for 2013, and the tile stories are spectacular. Lighting is a great way to look like you’ve spent a fortune in a bathroom, or even in a kitchen. Investing in both functional and decorative lighting makes any space look infinitely better. Clients are rarely disappointed when they choose to invest in a statement-piece light fixture. When choosing light fixtures, a designer trick is to opt for styles that are bigger than what you think the space could hold. An oversized light fixture can add
“wow” to any space, especially if you aren’t able to finish decorating it in the early phases of the project. If budgets are tight, mix and match. Buying cabinetry from a big box store, and then outfitting it with custom finishes such as special-order cabinetry hardware, marble countertops or backsplash, and then using light fixtures to add the “wow” are our go-to fixes when budgets run tight. If you can’t afford a stone countertop now, install a wood countertop and use a spar varnish on it. It’s easy to remove after the fact without damaging the counters when stone can be afforded. Just avoid the under mount sink, fancy faucet and backsplash until you are ready to upgrade the counters. This kitchen is from a big box store. We outfitted it with a custom frieze and crown moulding to make it look custom-built.
We splurged on a marble countertop with custom waterfall feature on the peninsula, and then added a beautiful marble mosaic for a backsplash. The whole space was finished off by adding some sparkle with our pendant lights. We maximized storage by putting base cabinets back-to-back to create the two-sided peninsula. It doubles as a bar for entertaining, and opens up the former closed-in kitchen. The biggest investment you can make when designing your kitchen and bathroom, though, is hiring an interior designer to help you with layouts, and to help pull finishes together. Even if you are on a budget, spending a few hours reviewing your plans with a designer is a great way to ensure that you are well on your way to realizing your new space. FHR

Kids’
For Space By ERIN LEGG
L
iving is what kids do best. They recognize spontaneity in every moment and find joy and play in everything they do. As adults, we can foster this creativity by providing fun and engaging spaces for kids, all the while maintaining functionality that fits with the rest of the house.
Space for Rest Help your kids to develop good sleep habits by using a creative floor plan and accentuating the bed for comfort. If you do not have a separate designated area within the house for toys, keep them contained and away from the bed, as you do not want your kids to associate playtime with bedtime. Assorted bins and baskets that are low to the ground are good for smaller children, and shelves and cubbies are good for storing older kids’ items. If you have a smaller space or have children sharing a bedroom, one of the best ways to maximize the area and add character and originality is with customized loft beds. These unique sleeping areas utilize the vertical space of a room that is often overlooked, and creates nooks for playing, reading, and studying. This also increases the floor area, giving more room for playing. When two children are sharing a room, loft beds help each child claim their own area within the space.
Space for Active Play If you have the opportunity, turn that bonus room or spare bedroom into a play room for the kids. This not only gives them a “destination” where they can find all their games, books and toys, but helps keep everything organized and prevents the entire house from being overrun with “kid stuff.” If not, keep your kids toys under control and maximize storage capacity using built-ins. For example, consider a reading bench with drawers or cubbies underneath to store books and stuffed animals. Your contractor can help you with recessed shelving or cubby holes to help keep things organized. Have comfortable flooring for play. Cover a section of the hardwood floor with a soft, plush rug. For carpeting options, consider something durable to withstand the wear-and-tear of energetic play. You might even opt for a darker colour or textured pattern, as this helps to conceal any stains. The colour palette for your kids’ room is endless, and can depend on your child’s personality. You might decide to stick with a white canvass and use accessories, pillows and blankets to add that pop of colour to the room. An accent wall painted a bright cheery color or highlighted with a patterned wallpaper helps to separate the sleeping area from the play area. If you enjoy neutral colours, try a modern shade of grey and incorporate yellows or tangerines. Grey is a popular colour choice that grows well with the kids and can easily be adapted.
Quiet Space and Study Time The study and reading area should not overpower the restful space for sleep. Make sure your kids have plenty of shelf space for books—either built-in or free standing units—and an organized desk or workspace. There are workspaces available with built-in capacities for different gadgets; your child can charge his or her MP3 player, cell phone or camera in a central station. Having comfortable kid-friendly seating helps kids settle in with a good book. Select chairs that are durable and easy to clean. Childsized ottomans are a good choice, and some also serve as extra storage. A variety of pillows and throw blankets gives them the opportunity to create their own cozy fortress on a daily basis. Have fun when planning your kids’ space. Let your child in on the process. Whatever the size of room or style you go with, the possibilities are endless as to what you can do with the area. FHR

HigH Quality Renovation Done to Complete Satisfaction By Doris Wang PHOTOS CaLVin FEHr

hat do people look for when hiring renovators to remodel their home? For most homeowners, their top concerns are service quality and workmanship. Although price is an important factor, it is high quality products and craftsmanship that stand out, and make a long-lasting impression on people.
Each of the co-owners has a specialization and area of expertise. Moats has worked as an interior and exterior installer and in sales. Bitz started in the roofing industry, and has served as a supervisor and service manager for other companies. Setre has also worked in installation. All three have more than 20 years of experience in construction.
Superior customer service and quality craftsmanship are what Ian Moats, Darren Bitz and Ed Setre have been offering their customers for the past 11 years. In 2002, the three friends got together and formed their own company, Innovation Renovation & Roofing Inc. With more than 65 years of combined experience in high quality renovation among these co-owners, the renovation company brings their expertise in high quality renovation to Regina residents and businesses.
All Innovation Renovation customers can be assured that their projects will be done to the highest standards, from the first consultation to the finishing touches. The company’s reputation has been built on their service quality. They refuse to take short cuts or any action that might sacrifice quality. “Good customer service goes handin-hand with doing quality work,” says Moats. “We expect high quality work from all our employees.”

Innovation Renovation offers interior and exterior renovations, windows, doors and roofing services. With roofing, Moats says it is important to diagnose the problem correctly before starting work. The owners and staff will bring their experience and knowledge to your home to ensure the highest standard of work. Beginning with the quotes and continuing to the company’s choice of products, their customer service is exceptional. The company uses only the highest quality shingles from suppliers such as IKO Shingles and BP Shingles; both companies carry excellent warranties in addition to the five year limited warranty on labor and installation offered by Innovation Renovation. The company specializes in all types of exterior work, from soffit and fascia to exterior insulation and eaves. Their excellent custom work includes custom
cladding, and running five and six inch continuous eaves. This dedication to quality has led Innovation Renovation to outstanding suppliers such as Mitten Vinyl, whose every siding product is backed with a lifetime transferrable warranty. There is a lot of competition in the field of windows and doors; that is why Innovation Renovation takes no chances with inferior products. Their quality and care in manufacturing high quality windows and doors, combined with strict standard and quality control, results in superior products for your home. Innovation Renovation strives to exceed your expectations on any renovation project. Moats, Bitz and Setre will continue serving new customers and old friends in their new location on Henderson Drive, starting at the end of January. Making Your Living Space

s summer approaches, Garett Adam, owner of JAGG Curb Appeal, knows that making your outdoor space as comfortable as your indoor space makes the warm season that much more enjoyable. “In addition to our sunrooms, we’re offering a couple of new products this year,” says Garett. “We’ve got a great selection of retractable screen rooms and doors that can make your patio, deck or garage even better for enjoying the outdoors.”

JAGG is now offering screen rooms and sunrooms made by AAA Aluminum Products. These unique rooms can create an inviting outdoor space all year round. A screen-enclosed balcony or deck can be a great place for relaxing or entertaining, without some of the annoyances of the outdoors. You can sit outside and enjoy the fresh summer air, protected from the elements and not bothered by mosquitoes, wasps or other pests. Screen rooms provide more shelter
than an awning and are less enclosed than a sunroom, adding additional living space to your home. JAGG can create a screen room specific to your needs; every room is designed, engineered and manufactured to withstand a tough Canadian winter. For those looking for something a little simpler, JAGG also offers retractable screens doors. An exterior screen can turn your garage or covered deck into
a comfortable space to savour summer. These custom-made retractable shading systems can provide shade, energy savings, ventilation and protection from insects—all at the touch of a button. JAGG’s screen systems are designed to filter out the sun’s harmful effects while preserving your view and letting you control your indoor lighting. In addition to keeping bugs outside, JAGG’s screens also feature a Screen Clean system that brushes bugs and debris off the screen, making sure they don’t get inside your home or nest in the screen. JAGG Screen Systems are available in many fabrics, styles and colours to match any home. They can block the sun while keeping your view, or provide complete blackout. And, like screen room systems, they are designed to handle all kinds of weather, even prairie wind.
couldn’t be more pleased with the result. “The JAGG team was wonderful to work with. When we had questions they were happy to answer them right away, and everything ran smoothly,” says Colynda. “We recommend JAGG to anyone considering a similar renovation.” “No matter what you’re looking for—retractable screen, screen room or sunroom—we can provide you with a great new space for your home,”
says Garett. With spring fast approaching, now is the time to consider your outdoor space and how you can maximize your enjoyment of the outdoors this summer. FHR JAGG Curb Appeal Lumsden 306.536.5682 jagg@sasktel.net www.jagg.ca ABOVE Garett Adam, owner

Draft Proofing is done before the insulation upgrades are complete by caulking and sealing around electrical house wiring coming up through partition and exterior walls of the home, and sealing around vent stacks, light fixtures, plumbing stacks, chimney stacks and exhaust ventilation ducts. When draft proofing is overlooked, a sign would be the dark stains on the underside of roof sheathing in the attic cavity. This movement of air containing moisture is pushed into the attic cavity by the forced air furnace when in operation, pressurizing the home and pushing air anywhere there is a weakness in the envelope.
our energy efficiency upgrades may be causing havoc within your home when the cold weather shows up, and here is why. The three major upgrades include the furnace, windows and insulation and draft proofing in the attic. The havoc I relate to is condensation on the inside of your new windows, even though you replaced your old aluminum framed windows with vinyl framed windows. 1. Your new high-efficient furnace. Your new furnace no longer takes combustion air from the basement or furnace room area, removing moist air which has settled in the furnace area through the combustion process, thus reducing the moisture in the home. New high-efficient furnaces draw the required combustion air through plastic pipes from the outside directly to the combustion chamber, as well as having a continual-flow furnace fan to maintain a balanced ambient temperature. 2. Windows. New vinyl windows, if installed properly, are tight and sealed to the house envelope to stop drafts, as well as any excess high humidity (moisture) from being exhausted out around the old aluminum or wood frames. 3. Insulation and Draft Proofing. Many home owners had insulation upgrades in their attics with no draft proofing.
Taking all three upgrades into consideration and reviewing your home as a system, the question now becomes: what do you do about the high humidity building up inside your home if you didn’t address the exhaust ventilation in the bathroom, kitchen and any moisture created within the home? Dehumidistat: This is a device to operate a ventilation system, such as a bathroom fan or an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilation), to exhaust the excess humidity out of your home. The setting of this unit is determined by the outside air temperature (see chart below). FHR

or Adam Reeson, being an entrepreneur runs in his family. His great-grandfather, Thomas L. Reeson, founded Remco Memorials in 1924, the largest producer of cemetery monuments in Western Canada; the company has been running successfully for 89 years. Following in his great-grandfather’s entrepreneurial spirit, Adam started his own business after graduating from the University of Regina’s Paul J. Hill School of Business in spring 2012. The idea came to Adam when he saw that the materials and designs used to make house address signs in Regina were of poor quality. With his knowledge of granite and engraving techniques, Adam says he wanted to bring something better to the market. Produced at the Remco production plant in Regina, the signs are made of granite, which is engraved using a state-of the-art laser-etching machine or the modern sandblast method. These quality engraving techniques can engrave text and images permanently into stone. “My products have been acceleratedweather tested, are guaranteed to never chip or crack, and will remain legible
for all time in any climate,” says Adam. “Unlike other products that need to be repainted or replaced in 10 or 15 years, granite requires very little maintenance and is comparable in cost.” The granite itself comes in various colours. Reeson Premium Signs currently offers eight different granite colours, which are imported from all over the world. The company also has endless design options in shape, size, font and design images. “We have the flexibility to match the style, décor and budget of any homeowner,” says Adam. With the construction boom in Western Canada, Adam believes the demand
for his signs will multiply. The viability of his business model was proven when Reeson Premium Signs won the Progress2Capital business planning competition for Saskatchewan’s top new business ventures. The judging panel for the six month competition included prominent business owners from across Saskatchewan. “Winning Progress2Capital gave me a lot of confidence and determination to grow my company,” Adam says. Reeson Premium Signs has sold products to customers as far away as Ottawa, and is also looking for more business opportunities in other markets such as Saskatoon, Calgary and Edmonton. However, Adam’s Regina customers are still very important to him. “Harmony Builders was the first builder to believe in my products and believe in me,” he says. “We have a really good relationship and they love their Reeson Premium Signs because it differentiates their houses from their competitors.” Looking to attract business from other
local builders, Reeson Premium Signs recently became a member of the Regina and Region Home Builders Association, and is looking forward to being a part of the city’s Spring Home Show in March. If you are a homebuilder or a developer, Reeson Premium Signs Ltd. has a very special offer for you. The company is willing to make a custom granite sign for your next show home—for free. s a natural element, granite is considered “green” by contemporary environmental standards. Regina and area residents and businesses can also now enjoy a “green” granite installation that takes less than a day by using new technologies and existing countertops. The company, Granite Transformations, does not use cheap or faux products to

cover a client’s countertop, but starts with natural granite to create slabs which are safer, stronger and require far less maintenance than ordinary granite. The transformed granite process involves grinding natural granite and mixing it with a very strong but lightweight resin, the type that is used to manufacture
aircraft. It is milled and poured into 10 foot slabs that are one-quarter inch deep. Produced in Florida, the slab is sent to Regina and cut into a template that exactly matches the client’s current countertop. Constructed completely off-site, the new counter is permanently bonded over the existing countertop in less than a day.
Clients are spared the noise and stone dust common to ordinary granite counters, which require demolition of usually still good countertop. Nor do clients experience lengthy delays in accessing their kitchen or bath. The ForeverSeal resin used in transformed granite removes the need for the yearly ritual of re-sealing that ordinary granite demands. Simple soap and water will keep the “green” counter safe and sealed throughout its lifetime warranty. Because transformed granite is no longer porous and bacteria-resistant, it appeals to hospitals and schools. Unlike traditional granite, it does not emit radon. Quartz countertops are also believed to be bacteria-resistant as a milled product. However, Todd Ripplinger, general manager of Granite Transformations in Regina, notes, “Quartz is neither UV or heat-resistant.
Over time, a quartz countertop can discolour in the sun and become scorched from hot items placed on it.” Ripplinger says his father fuelled his attraction to transformed granite. His father, who spent his career in masonry, is impressed with the transformed granite countertop installed in his own home. “He loves it,” says Todd. People can mistake transformed granite for the quick-fix products which use cheap coatings or flimsy materials. “Traditional granite is the foundation of our process,” says Ripplinger. “We start with natural granite and then use modern technology to transform it to a countertop that is stronger, safer and greener than ordinary granite.” Transformed granite counters are also less expensive. Prices per foot
may be comparable to ordinary granite countertops, but the lack of demolition creates considerable savings, and helps to save space in already overused landfills. Granite Transformations, currently found in all major Canadian cities, has entered its third decade of operations throughout North America. It has been located at 545 Albert Street in Regina for the past year. Stop by for your next countertop. he current trend in the industry is to spray foam insulation directly onto the drywall floor of the attic. However, this is problematic. In the winter issue of FineHomes Regina, we established that spraying the floor of the attic is completely unnecessary, and that attics do not require venting at all. What makes spraying the attic floor even more precarious is that the drywall you are spraying can be pushed or moved around. Since spray foam becomes rigid within seconds of spraying, there is virtually no way to fix any drywall movement without damaging or removing the foam. Bottom line: foam insulation is not to be placed on drywall, and needs to be sprayed on the underside of the roof.
tight means that the foam stays rigid. In a typical wall, the rigidity allows new wires to be run behind the drywall with ease. As for ceiling wires, this would not be a problem at all, since foam is not sprayed on the attic floor. If you want to wire a speaker through the ceiling you can, as there is no insulation there. Additionally, the spray foam used at Spray Jones has been extensively tested by the Underwriters Laboratory of Canada (ULC) to investigate the effects on nonmetallic covered cables. Even if the foam is in contact with wiring, when installed to the ULC standard, no harm will be done to CSAcertified wiring and electrical components.
Spray foam is versatile and flexible in its design. You can spray it into the most complex roofs and ceilings and the most irregular shapes and penetrations. It can also be used on new roofs and for re-roofing projects. It will stick to any clean, dry surface including metal, wood and concrete and can be used on flat, pitched and domed surfaces; it will even seal ceilings with several pitches.
As a home or commercial building owner deciding on insulation, it is important to be familiar with provincial and local building codes. Remember that Spray Jones staff will always discuss your needs with you, and write a proper specification based on budget, building codes and end desired results. FHR

Established almost 40 years ago, Supreme Kitchens & Millworks is a family-owned and locally-run business. Since then, the company has become a well-known name in Regina’s construction industry. Owner Rod Gregg, and father, Laurie, started out in the industry as home builders. The idea for a company specializing in cabinet supply came to them when someone complimented them on the cabinets they used for their own homes, and asked them if they could install one in her kitchen. “Pre-manufactured cabinets were a new thing in the 1970s,” says Rod.
“We thought that would be the way to go because there were a lot of kitchens that needed renovating.” The company currently works with two cabinet suppliers: Nickles Cabinets and Superior Cabinets. Nickles Cabinets are manufacturers in Richmond, B.C. that have an upscale and modern style. Superior Cabinets is located in Saskatoon, and builds more traditional cabinets. “The benefit to the customer is that they have more choices,” says Rod. “That’s important because we like to give them more options to choose from when
they come into the showroom.” Gregg and his staff also build countertops, and clients can choose from various styles and materials such as laminate, granite or quartz. Placing your kitchen renovation in the hands of Supreme Kitchens & Millworks will free you of stress and worry. You can be assured that all your needs are taken care of, from the demolition of your old cabinets to the installation of new ones. You don’t have to worry about hiring sub trade workers, either. The company has its own electricians, plumbers, drywallers and painters who will ensure their work is done to the highest standards. The state-of-the-art computer-aided design program also ensures that changes requested by customers are made quickly and efficiently. Over the decades, the company has expanded outside of kitchen cabinetry. Supreme Kitchens & Millworks also offers the Murphy Bed system: a bed that can be folded up against walls, and transform your room into a more elegant and practical living space. “It’s especially convenient in condominiums, where they need all the floor space they can get,” says Rod. “The bed doesn’t come into the middle of the room until you need it.” Rod is currently running the company with his wife, Myrna. His dedication has earned them a large client base and many referrals. However, Rod admits that he wouldn’t be successful if it weren’t for his staff. “Everyone is hard working and gets the job done,” says Rod. “They have all contributed to the longevity of Supreme Kitchens & Millworks.” FHR

ore than half of all Canadian homeowners will undertake a renovation project each year. If you’re going to spend money on your home, you want to make sure you spend wisely. So how do you decide which investment is best? First, determine your home’s value. The amount of money you invest should be proportionate to its value. Consider the other homes in your neighbourhood. Certain renovations increase the home’s value, but you don’t want to increase it so much that it is no longer within the value range of your neighbourhood. The type of investment you make will also depend on whether you are selling your house sooner rather than later. If you plan on staying in your home for five
116

or more years, this will affect the type and extent of improvement you should choose to do.
The Kitchen The kitchen is the most-used room in the house. This is where we cook, eat and entertain. The return on investment for kitchen renovations and upgrades is strong. Some experts advise homeowners to cap their kitchen renovation dollars at no more than 20 per cent of the home’s total value. This guideline can yield approximately 85 per cent in return. Kitchen renovations that pay off include: • anything to improve the functionality of the space, such as installing a double sink or prep sink, or
establishing cooking stations; • cosmetic upgrades, including improved lighting, updated cabinetry, a new backsplash or marble granite countertop; • adding more space to the room by creating a breakfast nook or a walk-in pantry; and • updating to sleek, modern and energy efficient appliances.
The Bathroom This is another wise investment, yielding up to 80 per cent for a bathroom addition and up to 90 per cent return on investment for a bathroom renovation. Adding another bathroom to the house improves functionality. Moreover, when the time comes to sell your house, potential buyers will appreciate that the work is already done.
Renovating an existing bathroom boosts the aesthetics of your home while you are living in it, and potential buyers recognize the value of this upgraded space. Renovation ideas include a walk-in shower upgrade, vaulted ceilings, a double sink, jacuzzi tub, or heated ceramic tile flooring.
The Deck Expanding your living space and beautifying your yard with a deck can achieve up to 80 per cent return on your money, depending on the size and materials used. The range of materials to use is vast: pressure treated wood, cedar, composite or resin, just to name a few. What material you choose will depend on the size of deck, your lifestyle and the maintenance required. It’s best to discuss your plans with a builder or contractor who can assist you in drafting a plan and choosing the right material, therefore maximizing your investment.
Siding Two words: curb appeal. Replacing the siding on your home gives a dramatic face lift that can yield great returns for when the time comes to sell: estimates run at up to 80 per cent return on your investment. Your exterior facelift can also include updating the look of your home with decorative brick highlights and exterior mouldings. You may even want to consider upgrading the exterior finish to your home. For example, if you have vinyl siding, you may investigate stucco. A beautiful exterior that sets your home apart from your neighbours’ is a wise investment.
Windows and Doors The amount of investment you will make for energy-efficient windows will vary on size and quantity, but you can expect between 70 to 80 per cent return for your investment. Doors are another wise choice, yielding 90 to 100 per cent returns. Not only do upgraded windows and doors have aesthetic appeal, they will also help you save on your monthly utility bills. While these figures are only estimates for you to consider, please discuss your renovation projects with the professionals. Each house is unique, and each homeowner has his or her own specific needs and wants for their living space. FHR

n 1955, Al Stepenoff’s side job was becoming so successful, that he decided to hang up his fireman’s hat, and tackle carpet and flooring installation full-time. His store, Allied Tiling & Floors Ltd, opened with an already healthy base of customers, and hasn’t stopped growing since. In 1975, Al’s son Ken took over the store, and in 1977 Allied Tiling & Floors joined the United Carpet franchise to take advantage
of the retailer’s major buying power. Despite the change, Allied stayed in the family, and has kept its small-store philosophy of customer care. Now, two generations later, Al’s grandson, Colby, runs the store. “I feel really great being the third generation of my family to do this. It’s something to be proud of, and to strive to really keep it going,” Colby says.

Whether for residential or commercial properties, Colby and his team work with their customers every step of the way to ensure that they find the quality flooring they need. While the store originally started out as a major carpet supplier, times and trends have changed, and they have responded. Now named United Carpet, Colby says that one of their most popular products is hardwood flooring. The store carries both Antique Expressions and Preverco, two of Canada’s best hardwood floor lines: Antique Expressions comes from British Columbia, and Preverco is from Quebec. Canadian wood products are known internationally for their higher quality standards, which is exactly why United Carpet carries many selections from each line. Whether you’re looking for a mid-range hardwood for your home or office, or want the top quality Canadian wood, United Carpet has the Antique Expressions or Preverco floors to suit your lifestyle and budget. Hardwood isn’t the only flooring option rising in popularity. In the last decade, Colby says he’s seen a shift from soft surfaces to harder flooring options such as porcelain and ceramic tile. According to Colby, carpet is making a comeback in certain areas of the home. Thanks to popular home renovation shows, homeowners and builders are always challenging themselves to find new and creative ways to make their homes comfortable and stylish—one way is to bring carpet back into the home. With this in mind, United Carpet became the exclusive dealer of HGTV Carpet by Shaw. All the products available in this line have proven quality from HGTV shows, and the styles and colours are chosen by designers from HGTV network. Choosing new flooring for your home can be a challenge, and at United Carpet, they strive to make it as simple as possible. They have a showroom complete with dozens of beautiful samples that customers can touch and feel, instead of simply looking at images in a look book. With Saskatchewan’s economic growth, the need for new homes has led to a housing boom. Colby and his team have responded to the increased demand, and they have expanded their services to cover other areas of the home besides floors. They’ve installed tile backsplashes in kitchens, and done beautiful custom work in showers and tub surrounds. They’ve also made the move to work directly with home builders, such as Devereaux, Spring Green and Armada, as well designers to help the housing industry create elegant and functional new homes for Saskatchewan’s growing population.

What our clients are saying “My experience with United Carpet has all been good. I’ve worked with them several times on jobs for various clients, and they’ve done some custom work for me. For example, I had a customer who had an exotic wood floor, and they did a custom stair nosing. They’ve found product for me that they wouldn’t typically carry, and they’ve been very easy to work with. Their installers are excellent, and all of their sales people are personable and knowledgeable. They respond quickly to emails and calls, and are always there when they say they will be.” Charlene Vaughn, City Space Kitchens and Interior Design Inc. “The great thing, if you look at today’s construction space, it’s so competitive and as we know, the labour market is so tight. One of the things that helps control your cost when you build is being able to count on your trades, especially on timing. The great thing about Colby and his team is their quality service. A lot of companies provide flooring needs, but Colby is there when he says he’ll be there and when we need them. They help us build a great reputation.” Rick Turchet, Homes by Devereaux “The professionalism, the quality of their work, and their attention to detail was excellent. They were excellent when it came to determine the type of wood; their installing was very specific about everything being perfect. They were there when they said they would be, and they were very considerate to make sure they weren’t intruding on your space. Their salesman, Todd, was great, and I would highly recommend their work." Chris Thompson and Sheila Sommerville

Their floor and installation teams are also very busy as a result of the economic upturn. Given their long history and family ownership, United Carpet in Regina takes great pride in their professional and courteous staff. Both teams are always trained in the latest trends in style and installation, and are ready to answer any questions that their customers might have. Renovating and replacing the floors in a home is a big decision, and the staff understands this. United Carpet is there to help customers find the right style, look and quality that their customers want and need. While the Saskatchewan boom has led to more business, this hasn’t changed how the family business operates. “We want to keep our quality of work the same,” Colby says. That means not expanding beyond their abilities for the sake of making a few extra dollars on the boom. “We have a great team and a great customer service standard, and we aren’t going to expand and lose that,” he says. The store also reflects its family-first values in its working hours. Everyone working at United Carpet has a family that’s important to them, and that’s why the store is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The hours might not be typical of a major retailer in the Queen City, but United Carpet is able to meet their customers’ needs while still maintaining their important family lives.
At the same time, the staff also understands that their customers have busy lives too, so if their hours don’t work for a customer, they can open after hours or on weekends by appointment. Simply give them a call to schedule a time. The family-first attitude that founded United Carpet is still at the core of the store today. “I have to uphold that, and provide the same services, if not better,” Colby says. Like his father and grandfather before him, Colby and the entire team at United Carpet in Regina strives to help everyone who walks in the store to find the quality flooring they deserve to put in their homes or business. To find out how the team at United Carpet can get you the right hardwood, tiles, or carpet, visit them at 1378 Scarth Street, or give them a call at 306.525.2797. FHR

he future of insulation just turned greener. For the past six years, BioFoam Spray Foam Insulation & Coating Inc. has been providing commercial, agricultural industries and residents in Regina and surrounding areas with more environmentallyfriendly insulation. the sprayfoaming, and is certified by the CUFCA (Canadian Urethane Foam Contractors Association). The goal of the CUFCA is to champion the polyurethane foam industry as a whole, while sustaining high industry standards and encouraging ongoing professional development.
Working with Biofoam means that you get to work directly with the owner. Yasinowski will do a free estimate, personally perform the job, and check it over to ensure the quality of his work. He will not leave a job until his customers are completely satisfied.
Spray foam insulation, as used by Biofoam, is an alternative to traditional building insulation, such as fiberglass. A two-component mixture composed of Isocyanate and resin comes together at the tip of a gun, and forms expanding foam to form an air barrier and vapour barrier.
BioFoam uses polar foam 7300 soya which uses soya oil, recycled plastic, and zero ozone depleting substances to provide an environmental insulation. The product is durable, will not absorb moisture and provides comfort for the occupants of buildings or houses.
Spray foam combines proven thermal protection, while offering superior air barrier properties. The product is a spray-applied cellular plastic that forms a continuous, monolithic barrier on walls, around corners, and on all contoured surfaces and protrusions. The air seal is of the highest R-value per inch, which means wall cavities won’t change temperature because the air seal and vapour barrier are on the outside. With BioFoam creating the proper air barrier to help improve your indoor air quality, you’ll breathe cleaner, better quality air. Your home will be shielded from dust, pollen, allergens, mold and mildew-causing humidity. Clients can be assured that they will stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, while conserving energy and saving money on utility bills year-round. To Yasinowski, customer service is everything, and he prides himself in having an excellent reputation with his customers. “We get numerous referrals because of our work,” he says. Seed catalogues already dog-eared, early (very early) plants in full can’t-wait-to-be-planted stretch, and we gardeners applying antiitch cream to our bodies as spring is springing or maybe sprung.
T
he rites of spring, at least on the Prairies, are curious at best to those who are unfamiliar with them. One has only to understand that extended cold periods—a dry cold for sure—and one of the shortest growing seasons in Canada, all mixed in with the fervour and anxiety of the gardener, leads to a veritable explosion in spring. I recall my first season in Saskatchewan wondering how many hanging baskets, containers and trees and shrubs were in the basements of so many avid gardeners. It seemed as magic that over a span of one evening, the entire block went from dreary landscapes and sodden lawns to a Disney-like apparition of full blooming lushness. Ah yes, spring has officially launched and the race is on. Appropriate attention to detail is important early on to support your continuing success in either a new or not-so-new garden. Of most concern should be the mixture that you will use in your containers, window boxes and the like. Many products are available, all claiming to be the best in the west, but simply put, look for one that has a moisture retention additive. Given the drying winds and often blistering heat of a Prairie’s summer, you do the math. Typically, I scuffle up the previous year’s mix and add a top up of fresh new mix. Additionally, if you have very large containers, fill about one-third full with discarded cell packs, Styrofoam trays from the grocery store and even plastic bottles. This “recycling” will save you a great deal on media and provide excellent drainage as well. Voles, those pesky mouse-like creatures—the ones that leave brown race tracks all over the lawn—are prevalent in Saskatchewan. The damage can be mitigated to a degree with a stiff raking to remove the damaged turf, then top dressing with decent topsoil and sowing grass seed. You may opt to use a repacked, complete mix, much like you would use for “doggie damage” if there is not too much damage. On that note, canine damage to turf after a long winter of business outside on the lawn can be nasty. Again, rake the area(s) to remove the dead turf and drench the spots with water. You might simply let the hose trickle for a few minutes per spot; this action dilutes the urine and flushes it deeper into the soil. A light sprinkling of baking soda on the destroyed craters will balance the acid that is left. If the spots are not too large, use the prepackaged material or the shavings of turf from edging the lawn—like hair plugs! For larger spots, you may choose to topdress and sow seed once prepared.
Perennials will be active for the most part and may require a delicate cleanup. Be careful: your body weight on moist, clay soils will compact and do more damage than you realize. Choose to clean the clumps on a drier day and early in the season to avoid damaging the tender new shoots. Keep an eye out for sluggish lily beetles as well; cultivate the soil carefully to expose any larvae that may be snuggling up to your lily bulbs. Just an update for you: I am currently with the Canadian Wildlife Federation as the manager of habitat programs. I encourage you to drop me a note if you need advice at kenb@ cwf-fcf.org, or go directly to our website www.cwf-fcf.org/. Have a super spring and grand gardening season. I look forward to hearing from you. FHR

Decking is the number one home renovation project that extends your living space into the great outdoors. A deck can be built in just about any shape and can be ground-level, elevated or splitlevel. The biggest decision is whether to build with wood or a composite material. Wood gives that warm, charming feel, while composites are low maintenance; there are pros and cones to both. Patios come in any shape, and are typically built with concrete, pavers, stone, tile, brick or gravel. Built at or around ground level, they normally do not require safety railings. Spring and summer means food on the grill. Choice of barbecue largely depends on available space. Barbecue on the deck or patio should be placed on a wide, flat surface away from trees and shrubbery, and in a space where you can barbecue in open air. Groups you entertain and types of food you cook will also determine the size of your barbecue.
The inside of your barbecue is also important, contributing to food flavour. Cast iron cooking grids are longer-lasting and can reach high temperatures to help you get that perfect sear. V-shaped vaporizers will help dissipate dripping moisture, eliminating flare-ups. Charcoal or gas? Charcoal might have better flavour, but gas grills provide the convenience of grilling with the flip of a switch. Whatever you choose, follow usage instructions and maintain it properly. Gazebos and sunrooms offer that space in the shade to relax, enhancing the appearance of your yard. Gazebos and marquees are more portable and come in several different sizes. Sunrooms allow you to enjoy the great outdoors anytime of the year without stepping outside; there are many options and sizes. Attached to your house, they offer a relaxing, sunny transition from your backyard into the home. A fire pit is an excellent option that offers a camping atmosphere and a great place to gather with family and friends. There are build-it-yourself low cost options which can be done with a stainless steel ring. For something a bit more attractive, try a brick fire pit. A pre-built fire pit is another convenient option. If you decide to build your own, remember to call SaskPower before digging and consult the city’s fire pit regulations. If you want a more relaxing addition to your backyard, why not install a hot tub? You will need to decide on the amount and strength of jets, hot tub configuration and the appropriate size for you and your family and potential guests. An optimal location is a few meters from your home for quick access and a place sheltered from the wind. You will need to hire a professional for any electrical set-up. The best part: a hot tub allows you to entertain outside all year long. If you’re up for the challenge, you may want to embark on these projects on your own, or you may choose to hire a professional. Before you call the professionals, have a firm idea of the scope of your project and your budget. Get at least three estimates, making sure that all contractors are provided with the same information for accurate comparison. Above all, enjoy your backyard entertaining! FHR
