Wearable Technology THE FUTURE OF SMART HOMES By Tonya Lambert
T
he future lies with the Internet of Things: a sophisticated, intricate network where the many systems and devices within our homes communicate with each other to fulfill our needs and wishes. This is the future of smart homes. Did you have a bad sleep? Not to worry, your sleep monitor will signal the coffee maker to adjust the strength of your coffee. Feeling stressed? Don’t worry, help is on its way; your mood ring will automatically adjust the sound system and thermostat to create a relaxing atmosphere. Today’s smart homes are laying the foundation for this intuitive future. Some systems and an increasing number of devices can now be activated and controlled through the use of apps on smartphones and tablets. However, as Tom Emrich, founder of We Are Wearables, explains, “The Internet of Things is about making dumb things smart. Things now aren’t really smart; they’re just awake. They haven’t reached their full potential yet.”

The Apple Watch, scheduled to appear in the spring, is expected to include apps which will allow the wearer to interact with their home, enabling them to do such things as turn off the lights after they have left their house, much as with smartphones and tablets. OveRcOming the Obstacles Several challenges will need to be overcome as the Internet of Things develops, including the issue of power for wearable technology. To work, wearables must be on, using a lot of energy; companies are researching ways to make them more energy-efficient. As more devices become smart, another obstacle is how to integrate the various technologies for effective communication. At the moment, several integration platforms are in various stages of development. One day, everything in our homes will be interconnected. With wearable technology, an interactive, smart life is closer to reality.
Wearable technology is expected to completely supersede smartphones and tablets for controlling such things as lighting, heating, sound systems and security in smart homes within five years. Canadian-based company, Thalmic Labs, is currently fine-tuning its gesture-control smart armband, Myo. Using biosensors to detect movements of the wrist and fingers, Myo enables its wearer to control digital devices within the home, such as computers, smartphones, iPods, video game systems and home theatres. One Ring tO Rule The Japanese company, Logbar, has developed a smart ring, which will literally allow you to wrap your home around your finger. Simply press a button on the side of this unisex ring, move your fingers to turn on the lights, turn off the television, play music, take photos and track your location. The Ring was unveiled to the public at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January. Fin Robotics is working on another wearable ring that will allow you to control household devices and play video games through simple hand movements. With Fin, the palm of your hand becomes your keyboard as the ring tracks the movement of your thumb

When Disaster Strikes, Renew Disaster Cleanup is There By Brook Thalgott Photos Calvin Fehr
L
ast July, Regina was hit by a massive rainstorm and many city residents found themselves with basements flooded with water or worse — dealing with a sewer backup. Jason Argue, who lives in Regina’s northwest end, had a major sewage backup in his basement. “It was a terrible mess,” says Jason, remembering what he faced last summer. “I had a major cleanup on my hands; I had to deal with my insurance company, plus find a contractor that could repair all the damage. It was a bit of a nightmare.” Progress was slow,

In the east part of the home you enter the living area. This lovely open space features décor reminiscent of the 1920s including wide windowsills and baseboards. “We even kept the original iron vent covers to add to the appeal of the home,” adds Christa.

AutomAtions And innovAtions The idea that every space and item in a kitchen serves a purpose is one the world of cabinetry has embraced wholeheartedly over the past decade or so. The items and systems available for organizing cabinets, pantries and drawers allow homeowners
to create customized storage to complement their work habits and lifestyle — and all behind closed doors. As many have moved away from traditional cupboards, opting for the easier access drawers provide, Lisa Sandham, an interior designer based out of Thunder Bay, Ont., points to innovations such as drawers designed specifically to fit into corners as a means to maximizing storage space. In traditional kitchen designs, a lot of space is consumed by creating corners with countertops and the cabinets beneath them, and often this space is difficult to use. Designs like the Space Corner offered by Blum Canada actually allow full use of under-counter space in corners, Sandham says, and have done away with the problematic “Lazy Susans” of the past. Debuting at the 2014 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas, Nev., DuPont ™ Corian ® surfaces are now able to wirelessly charge smart mobile devices. All you have to do is put your phone or tablet on the countertop, and a transmitter beneath the surface connects to a receiver — in the form of a phone, phone case or wireless charging ring — to charge your device. “Electromagnetism moves from the transmitter to the receiver where power is extracted. [Induction charging] was used instead of more traditional charging methods due to the presence of water on countertops,” says Lisa Jenkins, Canadian business manager for DuPont™ Building Innovations. inding the right accessories to complete your home and create the right atmosphere is an art. Peggy Reid and Ashley Bryant from Reid & Siemonsen Design Group have some decorating advice for incorporating luxury accessories into your home. “We are seeing a lot more colour coming into our designs this year,” says Peggy, the owner of Reid & Siemonsen. “For a long time it was neutral on neutral, but just like women’s fashion, home design has moved more towards bolder colours, which is exciting to design with.”
Great Room
The great room is the main focus for decorating enthusiasts, as it tends to be one of the most popular spaces for families to gather. Peggy recommends choosing an exciting fabric as a jumping-off point. By finding a fabric you love, you can begin to pull colour and pattern into your space. Mixing patterns can add a lot of interest in the room as long as you remember to have a variety of scale, texture and prints, while keeping consistency with colour. Keeping larger pieces of upholstered furniture neutral allows you more flexibility for art and accessories. A simple way to update your room is by changing light fixtures or drapery hardware to warmer metal colours such as gold or brass. This can go a long way toward staying on trend. “Everything was stainless or chrome for a long time, but things are moving towards warmer tones now,” Peggy explains.

Creating a fabulous tablescape can add fun and interest for entertaining guests. A bright floral arrangement can set the tone for the room for each season. White or neutral coloured plate sets will also be advantageous for these seasonal place settings and allow you to change napkins, candles and other accessories easily.

The dining room is also an ideal space to have a more daring paint colour or interesting wallpaper. Glamorous drapes can also add a dramatic element to the room. Choosing the right chandelier enhances the room and is often the focal point and can create some sparkle to the space.

Coolest Plants for 2015

curmudgeonly gardener can’t resist purchasing at least one. The information that follows has been assembled purely from my own point of view as the highlighted plants are either what I want or already have in my wee garden. My actual list is much too long for publication, so this select offering is, shall we say, closer to the top.

pring is such a difficult time for me. Indeed the weather is improving (or so the story goes), the garden is starting to yawn, stretch and open its sleepy eyes. There’s so much to get excited about, where does a person start? Specifically, which plants should be highlighted, which list presents itself as the absolute “got to have” and what might I be growing this year? Naturally, there is a parade of the new and potentially most popular perennials, a bastion of brightly coloured annuals, albeit some looking nothing like their original ancestors. Lest we forget the hanging containers posseting petunias from every conceivable corner and so cleverly displayed that even the most

Bergenia “Flirt” is a handsome yet diminutive selection of the ever-hardy and trusted workhorses of its parentage, great for the shadier Canadian garden. Typical of this genus, the foliage ranges from a dark glossy green through stages of red and maroon. Considered to be an evergreen, I have yet to appreciate that aspect, as my plants are under snow cover for the longest time. This wee gem offers the small pocket gardener a wonderful perennial addition with promise of pink flower clusters early in the season. It’s also for those who have just a corner to add a new selection. Coleus Colour Clouds “spiCey” is one of a great many new introductions in this popular and easily grown genre. For the past number of years, Coleus has regained immense popularity and with good reason. New gardeners have little to no difficulty achieving success with Coleus; their range of foliage shape, size and massive range of colourful combination are intriguing and their price point is usually reasonable. HeucHera “Forever purple” provides an exhilarating contrast to the popular lime green foliage of many plants so popular this decade. Heuchera are amongst my favourite perennials because they are basically worry-free and reliable in my zone 2b garden with a decent leaf mould cover for winter. The selection abounds sporting vivid coloured foliage, a vast array of leaf shapes and, in many cases, attractive venation in the leaves. “Forever Purple” will find a home in my front garden in the dappled shade of an American Elm tree with neighbours of Thalictrum, perennial Dianthus and a lovely perennial geranium for texture. THalicTrum “BlaCk stoCkings” plays a critical role in my front, southeast-facing garden. I just love this perennial and will continue to sing its praises at every possible opportunity. She stands tall with her jet black stems supporting a filamentous foliage reminiscent of Columbine. When she blooms, typically later in the season, great clouds of powder puff purple fill her corner on centre stage of the garden. The Winnipeg winds haven’t bothered her yet as she defiantly stands her ground. Totally hardy, massively reliable and above all gorgeous — gee, do you think I’m fond of this one? Have fun shopping, studying the new and notables and, of course, play in your garden. It’s been a long winter indoors. tolerant or preferred plant, Coleus can be nipped backed to encourage a bushier habit; the cuttings root can very easily be reinstalled in your garden or container. Colourful splashes in a darker corner of the garden act as punctuation marks and will liven up even the dankest landscape. It’s a very popular container-grown plant for balcony gardeners and those of us who are short of room in our landscapes and must hang plants.

Decks have become desirable outdoor living spaces, thanks to new design and construction trends — and many other optional extras. Wind Walls Wind walls are also a popular addition. Wind walls are six-foothigh glass panels which block out the wind, separate your deck from your neighbours’ yard and block out the wind. The glass panels are usually made from privacy glass, a clouded glass which lets the light through while maintaining privacy. Glass panels come in different patterns and are also available in aluminum. gazeBOs and paRtial ROOfs Gazebos and other partially covered structures offer welcome shade on hot summer days, protection from rain and drizzle, and also can help retain heat in the winter. They provide relaxed lounging space with room for chairs or tables underneath; if equipped with a good-quality heater or safe fire pit in the winter, you can be cozy in your backyard all year long. Equipping your deck with a partial roof, pergola, gazebo or an umbrella will come in handy on sunny days, in unexpected rain or drizzle, and for your backyard retreat in winter months. Built-in seating and taBles Many decks now incorporate built-in bench options — including benches which line the deck attached to the railing — and built-in eating areas. Also popular are tables which fit on to your railings.

The secret to these magical places is that much of the surrounding landscaping requires little or no attention. The term “zero-scaping” was coined to describe the trend in de-signing landscapes to require as
In addition to the obvious benefits, yards that require less maintenance also require less water and energy, which reduces your ecological footprint. Many zeroscaped yards need little or no chemicals or pesticides to stay looking great, and many of the products employed — such as rubber mulch or synthetic grass — are made from post-consumer recycled materials, which further benefits the environment. These materials also deter insects, rodents and invasive moss or mould, creating a cleaner and healthier living space.

The goal is simple: zero maintenance. But achieving that will require some strategic planning and sorting through some complex choices. Here is some advice that can get you going in the right direction.
Make a plan and seek out expert advice. Don’t worry if you don’t know all the benefits and the aesthetic value of the products you are seeking. If you don’t have a favourite regionally appropriate ornamental grass, don’t panic. The industry leaders work hard to educate via their websites and through retailer networks. Your local landscape supply store will have lots of great advice and is probably using zero-scaping products around their own store. If you want to take your project to the next level, a landscape architect or landscape design consultant is well worth the investment.
The ideal solutions for you likely already exist. The industries that provide many of the products have grown from niche startups to more than $1 billion in annual sales
throughout North America. That’s great news for consumers as growing demand leads to a greater variety of options in products, such as artificial grass and rubber mulch. Plus, competition keeps prices more reasonable.
Have an investment perspective. You’ll save money in the long run. True, many of the products you will use in your zero-scaping project are more expensive than those that require constant upkeep: synthetic lawn will cost more than sod, rubber mulch or washed stone requires more investment than wood mulch and composite decking carries a premium over wood. However, over the course of several years you can save substantial sums by not having to refresh or maintain. Zero-scaping will easily pay for itself in four to five years. So this summer, if you don’t find pleasure in upkeep, don’t feel you have to do the same old thing in your yard. If you aspire to have a beautiful yet maintenance-free yard, the resources are available to help you create one. L
andscaping or building projects in the yard requires coordination, and the first step is to contact Sask 1st Call before any digging begins. For safety reasons, excavating the yard, building decks, fences, sheds or garages, pouring concrete, or even planting trees all require knowledge of the location of buried electric, natural gas and telecommunications lines. With a single call, homeowners and contractors can anticipate line locate services within two business days so they can get on with the job. Despite this free service, in 2013 Saskatchewan’s utility Crown c o r p o ra t i o n s — S a s k E n e rg y, SaskPower and SaskTel — collectively responded to more than 1,000 contacts made to their underground facilities. This resulted in an estimated $10 million in combined damage repair costs and loss in productivity, along with high potential for injury or loss of life. To address these concerns, the three Crowns partnered with Sask 1st Call and the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) to introduce the Safety Patrol initiative — the first of its kind in Canada. This initiative, launched in 2014, was specifically designed to provide a point of interaction with homeowners and contractors in new urban neighbourhoods in Regina and Saskatoon where incidents were on the rise. Patrollers discussed safe digging practices, and promoted the importance of line locates so that underground utilities are properly marked before any excavation work begins. During the pilot season, the Safety Patrols travelled in marked Sask 1st Call vehicles and visited work sites in the targeted areas during the traditional construction season of May 1 to October 31. This direct, face-to-face contact encouraged two-way dialogue with the digging community, and identified some concerns that proved valuable for Sask
1st Call, SCGA and the utility Crowns. The Safety Patrols also visited contractor offices to conduct safety presentations or hold “tailgate” safety meetings with work crews. Businesses where excavation equipment is rented were also visited by the patrollers to encourage staff to pass along safety messages to customers. During the six month period of the pilot season, patrollers engaged with nearly 1,000 contractors, homeowners and rental companies. Of the homeowners and contractors contacted, approximately 80 per cent had locates requested. Of those who were ready to work, but did not have locates requested, one-third contacted Sask 1st Call and requested a locate after speaking with the Safety Patrol. The program, along with other damage prevention initiatives, contributed to a consistent reduction in third-party line hit damage. In 2014, the three Crowns saw a combined 330 fewer line hit incidents compared to 2013, a reduction of 31.8 per cent. Having played a significant part in achieving this reduction, safety patrols will be on the road again this summer, with a third vehicle added to reach other communities in Saskatchewan. he benefits of using structuralstrength steel to build homes is now available to Canadians, thanks to new technology being offered by Estevan’s FrameTech Systems.
Brad and Tenille Wilhelm, who purchased Estevan Eavestroughing and Exteriors, a metal roofing and exterior construction company in 2007, took note of the lightgauge steel framing technology they saw presented at a trade show in the fall of 2013. Light-gauge steel frame construction has been popular in Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia for the last 25 years because of its affordability, strength and durability. “Because we have been such a resource rich country in the past, it hasn’t become mainstream over here yet,” says Brad. “But in my own experience working with wood, I’ve seen the quality of it going down and costs going up every year. After doing more research, we saw light-gauge steel framing as a viable and economical solution to Canadian building needs.” In November 2014, after purchasing the software and machinery from a New Zealand based company, the Wilhelms opened FrameTech Systems. After intensive training, their manufacturing facility is now fully operational and ready to fulfill the construction industry’s needs. One local project starting in the spring is in conjunction with a local developer on the construction of a subdivision of steel framed homes overlooking the beautiful TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course. entilation is a critical component of a home’s construction, ensuring longterm structural integrity and everyday comfort. Often a homeowner will renovate their home without thinking about the impact the renovations will have on the attic assembly. Canadian Building codes specify the minimum code requirements for attic venting, but when the house is modified the attic may no longer be properly ventilated. “Even brand new homes that were meeting minimum code may have issues where warm air is getting up into

the attic and condensation is building up,” says Wade Murray, who owns Ultimate Insulation – The Attic Experts with his wife, Laura, and son, Joel. Ultimate Insulation is a company that specializes in loose-fill attic insulation and ventilation. In the summertime, it keeps the heat out of your attic, which can be very hard on the shingles and it can cause your air conditioner to work harder than it should.” “When people think insulation, they think of winter,” adds Joel. “They don’t think of how important it can be in the summer to ensure proper ventilation when it’s really hot.”

Signs that you may have condensation in your attic include water stains on the ceilings, water coming down the edges of the windows or the paint on the walls bubbling. These signs are often seen right after the first spring thaw as the frost that accumulated in the attic during the winter melts. You can also tell if there is a condensation problem by checking for water staining on the soffits, the flat underside near the eavestrough. With plywood soffits, you may notice the paint peeling, which indicates condensation forming within that wood. It’s also important to check the vapour barrier for areas where warm air is getting into the attic, which Ultimate Insulation does during their assessment. Joel suggests looking around light fixtures and the attic hatch itself to check for a good seal.
“Warm air is always going up,” continues Wade. “The highest point is the attic hatch, and it’s the opening to the cold zone in the attic. If that hatch isn’t properly sealed, warm air will escape into the attic. With just a small amount of warm air getting into the attic every day, a ton of condensation can build up. As we get more efficient sealing the doors and windows properly, the air has nowhere else to go and with unbalanced attic venting, the roof may draw air from the house, causing significant problems.” Ultimate Insulation also assists when you want to do major changes to your home by removing the existing insulation, adding whatever changes you need and then refilling the attic with new insulation. Melnyk uses her training in design principles and concepts, as well as her knowledge of building codes, to develop plans that will enable the owners to get the most out of their space. “As an interior designer, I listen to my clients wants and needs; I learn their budget and deadlines,” explains Melnyk. “Then, I show them what can work and why. It’s my job to bring my client’s vision into reality within reason.” Similar to an interior decorator, an interior designer is also concerned with aesthetic appeal. However, an interior designer’s concerns go well beyond furnishings and embellishments. Once the basic layout for the space has been approved, Melnyk guides her clients through the process of picking out fixtures and finishes, from paint and floor coverings to plumbing fixtures, lighting and cabinetry. She
works side by side with the contractor to coordinate every aspect of construction and installation. “I like crisp, clean lines,” says Melnyk. “I like symmetry, though asymmetrical design does have its place. I generally keep walls a neutral colour, adding colour in the furnishings. Go through any outstanding debts and add up your monthly repayment obligations. For example, credit cards, personal loans, vehicle loans, lease payments, student loans, etc. Once you have a list, it’s easier to see which ones can be repaid quicker through extra payments to free up additional funds before you jump into home ownership. FIGURE OUT YOUR PRICE RANGE Before you fall in love with a home, make sure you qualify for a mortgage and know how much you can borrow. Having your finances arranged will give you peace of mind. A mortgage specialist can provide you with pre-approval and an interest rate guaranteed for 90 days. Remember to budget for the closing costs too, such as legal fees and home insurance. Often buyers are unaware, but additional costs are required when completing a home purchase, which usually amount to oneand-a-half per cent of the purchase price. It’s also a good idea to budget for startup costs too. If this is your first home, you might need to buy additional furniture, a snow shovel, garden hose, lawn mower, etc. These costs can add up quickly. FINDING HELP WITH THE DOWN PAYMENT Coming up with a down payment for a home can be challenging, but there are options available that allow you to become a homeowner sooner than
you thought. For instance, you can buy a home with as little as five per cent down as long as the mortgage is insured by a third party such as the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) or Genworth Financial. To have more than five per cent down you can use your own savings, RRSPs or a non-repayable gift from an immediate family member. Alternatively, you can apply for five per cent down payment assistance through a credit union if purchasing a new home that is constructed through the HeadStart on a Home Program. CHOOSE THE RIGHT MORTGAGE Your ideal mortgage is the one that lets you live comfortably within your budget and still leaves you with enough money to enjoy your first home. You can choose from a number of mortgage types including a fixed option, where the mortgage rate and repayment you make each month remains constant; an open option, which offers flexible repayment terms; or a variable option, which has a fluctuating repayment rate.
