all is just around the corner and if you haven’t tackled your spring cleaning yet it’s finally time to open the windows, shoo away the cobwebs and take on the annual spring/fall cleaning. Living in a cleaner home also means a healthier home — less dust, allergens, odours and dirt — which is better for everyone in your family. Here are a few helpful and effective tips which make seasonal cleaning more manageable and enjoyable. First things first: when taking on a big project, the best way to get started is to make a plan. Start by listing all the rooms in your home and what you plan to accomplish in each room. Think of areas you don’t normally get to wash such as baseboards, walls, door frames, casings and windows. If it helps, you can even walk through your home while making the list to ensure you aren’t forgetting anything. Create a realistic schedule and timeframe, keeping in mind a single weekend won’t suffice; you’ll need several days to get to the areas that are overlooked on a regular basis. Whether you prefer to go room by room or conquer one specific task (such as all the windows throughout the house), make sure you stay focused

on the particular room or task at hand to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Having the proper cleaning products makes cleaning a breeze. Fill a bucket or tray with the basics needed for cleaning throughout the house. Not having to backtrack each time you need a different cleaning product will save you tons of time in the end. There are a few basic cleaning products each household should have: glass cleaner, bathroom cleaner, different cleaning cloths for tasks in the kitchen, bathroom, dusting and floors (we prefer microfibre cleaning cloths), a toothbrush, a nonabrasive scrubber, a toilet brush and, of course, a good Hepa filter vacuum that can easily get under furniture. Some environmentally friendly cleaners we use include Basic H by Shaklee and Tub and Tile by Melaleuca. You’ve got a plan, you’ve budgeted your time, you have your supplies ready, and now it’s time to get started! such as a dramatic fireplace or art, as well as consider where it is in the home. “A staircase’s position in the home will often dictate what type of structure is created. Bold sculptural elements tend to need more space,” says Douglas. Te c h n o l o g i c a l and material manufacturing advances have also had an impact on the humble staircase. “Many people are opting for the dynamic tension created by stair treads and rails that seem to float in a space,” says Douglas. “This look is often attained through the use of steel and glass.” Steel is being used more and more in staircase design because of its ability to provide strength while minimally imposing on a space. Steel can support in more thin dimensions than most materials, acting as the central spine of a staircase. Douglas himself has completed several projects where stair stringers seemingly float away from a wall or hover in mid-air with steel. Glass allows homeowners to have an open and airy feeling while still maintaining a safe environment. Handrails are a necessity for safety, but there is nothing saying they have to be heavy or obtrusive. Safety is always an important part of stair design regardless of the space. There are two different types of safety concerns with staircases, building codes and the personal feeling of safety. Many people love the look of an open stringer and riser-free staircases where the steps seem to hover in space, but the look can induce a certain amount of trepidation. Douglas notes this fear can be alleviated by creating a thicker tread thus reducing the gap.

“Feeling safe is a very important part of feeling at home. Many people prefer carpeted stairs, but it is important to have similar textures on landings too, that shift underfoot can result in the slip factor,” says Douglas. There are usually concerns with homeowners about young children and stairs, but it is still possible to achieve a striking look while still embracing family life. Whether renovating or building a completely new home, there are a plethora of choices and stairs often get forgotten in the shuffle. The modern staircase is a unique combination of wood, metal and glass expressing a homeowner’s personal sense of style.

Moving & Packing Tips

hether it’s your home and all your worldly goods, or something like a big piece of furniture from one end of town to the other, moving is stressful. There are so many things to remember to do, and the biggest of these is packing everything to be moved. Should you use boxes or plastic bins? What should go in each box? What do you do with the fragile stuff? How do you protect your furniture from damage? Packing is by far the biggest and most stressful part of moving. We’ve been moving people and their belongings for many years, and we’ve got some great advice. First, get rid of any items you don’t need before you move. There’s no point in moving things you’re not going to need at your new home. We’re always happy to help people get rid of things they don’t need and get the items donated or recycled. Once you’ve determined what’s making the move, then it’s time to pack.

When packing, don’t overfill your boxes. The biggest mistake we see is boxes filled so full they can’t be closed properly. Always make sure the contents fit in the box so it can be closed with tape. Open, overfilled boxes mean things get damaged. Also, make sure the box is appropriate for the contents. Heavy items should be placed in smaller boxes. Our rule of thumb is: if you can’t lift it, it’s too heavy. It’s always better to have more, lighter boxes than fewer, heavier boxes for safety reasons, and to prevent damage. Plastic bins may not always be

a great choice for packing, depending on the contents. Fragile items should never go in a plastic bin. Plastic bins can bend easily and they should never be overfilled. They are best for lighter items, or for storage once you’ve moved. Fragile items should be wrapped well in paper or bubble wrap, and placed in smaller boxes to prevent breakage. As for electronics, be sure to box items like stereos and DVD players, because if left unboxed they can lose knobs or buttons during moving. TVs can be wrapped and slid between mattresses, along with mirrors and pictures. Lamps should have their shades removed and packed in a box. The lamp itself should be wrapped well, and boxed if possible. You can stack the shades lightly — never force them — to help save room, too. When moving furniture, you can wrap every piece in plastic if needed. Couches, chairs and love seats should have any removable cushions taken off before wrapping. As well, moving blankets are an excellent way to keep furniture protected during the move. With these few helpful tips, you can make sure your move is less stressful and your belongings are protected. How far into fall do Saskatoon households typically use their decks? As it cools down in the evening there’s generally less and less usage. If you’re uncomfortable you’re going

What heating options are available for outdoor spaces? Bridlewood carries three lines of patio heaters: IR Energy, Patio Plus and Napoleon. The most common option is the stand up patio heater with the dome on top. They are available in both fixed and portable so they can be moved around the deck or yard. Napoleon heaters are more decorative, with flames visible through the glass tube, but don’t

provide as much heat. Another option is hanging patio heaters, which hang off the soffit or deck. Outdoor fireplaces are typically more decorative, but Valor has released a radiant heat outdoor fireplace that provides a lot of heat. We also have heaters suitable for three-season rooms including a free-standing natural gas radiant stove. Unlike much of what’s available in box stores, heaters from Bridlewood are serviceable, so if a new part is needed it can be replaced, rather than having to purchase a new heater. What about keeping warm inside? What should people do to ensure their gas fireplaces are working as well as possible? The batteries should be changed and glass cleaned annually. Bridlewood offers full servicing. If you want to take care of the glass cleaning yourself, use a cleaner similar to what you would use on a glass cook top stove. Smear it on and let it dry a little like you would with car polish, then buff it off. If you do this once a year, it will be easier to clean. If it’s getting sooty, it’s important to clean it more often so the sulphur doesn’t build up. With so many ways to keep warm, there is no reason to abandon your outdoor space as soon as temperatures start dropping. For many people, the deck is their favourite area of the home. Extending the time you spend using it is an investment into your happiness.

reating a dream kitchen often means finding the perfect marriage of function and style. Two elements speak to this kitchen design balance: cabinetry and backsplashes. IT’S WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS When it comes to cabinetry, trends are leaning towards simple designs and appearances – but only on the outside, explains Fran Underwood, a Canadian interior designer. “For the cabinets themselves, there has been a complete shift over the years towards very plain and simple designs,” says Underwood. “Even in the hardware, people prefer finger pulls or grooves to handles and knobs.” The number of kitchen cabinets is decreasing, replaced by the favourable drawers that make accessing stored items faster and simpler, she says. “People want to be able to do the things they do in the kitchen as easily as possible,” Underwood says, noting that having appliances pre-wired is also a growing trend. “So something people like to do is have these items in place where they are

accessible, but also usable. You don’t have to get the appliance out, put it on your counter and plug it in; you just open a door or drawer, and there it is, ready to use!” she says. A BACKSPLASH OF COLOUR While neutral, natural, monochromatic and shades of white, black and grey seem to remain the favoured colour themes in kitchens, Underwood says she is starting to see pops and splashes of colour making their way back into the most used room in the home. “I just did a kitchen where the cabinets were all a dark grey, sort of like a weathered wood colour, and the countertop was white granite… and I did the walls orange!” she says excitedly. “The client loved it.”

Backsplashes have gained a lot of attention over the past decade, with seemingly endless styles and types of glass, stone and ceramic tile. While neutral colours and tones remain quite popular, many are starting to find the multi-tone or patterned mosaic styles too fussy in appearance, Underwood says. Today’s kitchens are all about clean lines and simplicity, and clients tend to favour grey-scale or natural colours and shades. A nice way to create a continuity of the

Peggy Reid and Ashley Bryant from Reid & Siemonsen Design Group have some decorating advice for incorporating luxury accessories into your home. “We are seeing a lot more colour coming into our designs this year,” says Peggy, the owner of Reid & Siemonsen. “For a long time it was neutral on neutral, but just like women’s fashion, home design has moved more towards bolder colours, which is exciting to design with.”

Great Room

The great room is the main focus for decorating enthusiasts, as it tends to be one of the most popular spaces for families to gather. Peggy recommends choosing an exciting fabric as a jumpingoff point. By finding a fabric you love, you can begin to pull colour and pattern into your space. Mixing patterns can add a lot of interest in the room as long as you remember to have a variety of

scale, texture and prints, while keeping consistency with colour. Keeping larger pieces of upholstered furniture neutral allows you more flexibility for art and accessories. A simple way to update your room is by changing light fixtures or drapery hardware to warmer metal colours such as gold or brass. This can go a long way toward staying on trend. “Everything was stainless or chrome for a long time, but things are moving towards warmer tones now,” Peggy explains.

Dining Room

Creating a fabulous tablescape can add fun and interest for entertaining guests. A bright floral arrangement can set the tone for the room for each season. White or neutral coloured plate sets will also be advantageous for these seasonal place settings and allow you to change napkins, candles and other accessories easily. The dining room is also an ideal space to have a more daring paint colour or interesting wallpaper. Glamorous drapes can also add a dramatic element to the room. Choosing the right chandelier enhances the room and is often the focal point and can create some sparkle to the space.

Master Bedroom

Similar to the great room, this is a wonderful room to experiment with fabrics and use different textures. “A lot of men don’t like having too many decorative pillows on the bed,” Peggy laughs. “But it does look glamorous and romantic to have a variety of colours and layers. The bedding itself can be fairly neutral, but adding pillows with fabrics such as silks and velvets will provide a luxurious feel to your space.”

Kitchen

A great way to add colour, pattern and texture to the kitchen is through an interesting backsplash, which can be a combination of metal, glass or stone. If you have an island or bar, you can have a lot of fun adding different fabrics on the seats of the bar stools. With metal or wooden stools you can add a pop of colour by painting the whole frame to suit the room. Other things like counter height and depth need to be considered (especially for dishwashers), as well as counter allowance for slide-in ranges.

Last But Not Least Jumping the gun on appliance purchases can cost you in the long run if you haven’t properly planned the space. Make sure you extensively plan the layout of your kitchen. If an 18-inch dishwasher just won’t cut it, make sure you delegate space for a full 24-inch model. Don’t get stuck with appliances you don’t like just because you didn’t plan properly.

Choosing a Reputable Contractor for Your Stucco Exterior

he sophisticated finish of a stucco exterior can add character and curb appeal to any home or building. When done correctly, it can also provide a great barrier against the elements and protect one of your biggest investments— your home. However, if shortcuts are taken, homeowners will surely end up dealing with problems such as flaking stucco, rotten sheeting and boards, mouldy insulation and rotten drywall.

Homeowners must be aware that a lower quote on a stucco project does not necessarily mean a cost savings. They may save some money initially, but a few years down the road they will more than likely find themselves shelling out big bucks when the consequences of cornercutting become apparent. Saskatoon’s housing boom for the past several years now has attracted numerous fly-by-night contractors who are often inexperienced, poorly trained or not trained at all, switching overnight from careers as bookkeepers, musicians, cell phone salespeople and so on. They’re here to make a quick buck and are gone by the time the results of their shoddy workmanship become known, leaving new homeowners with no recourse other than to hire a different company to do costly repairs or replacements. Another concern in Saskatoon is the contractor who has been doing things

exactly the same way for 30 years or more. Today’s building envelopes have tighter windows and doors and, highefficient furnaces that have to comply with the latest requirements of the Energy Guide and National Building Code. They function differently than older homes and this must be taken into consideration. Many of these contractors are not even meeting the minimum requirements of the National Building Code, which should be exceeded to provide longevity, durability, energy efficiency, increased value and overall peace of mind for the entire lifespan of the building. In contrast, AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. has been operating for 11 years in Saskatoon and the surrounding area and has completed more than 600 successful building projects. In Saskatchewan, there are only two Quality Assurance Program (QAP) Level 4 Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) mechanics certified by the EIFS Council of Canada and they are both employed by AL-RO, the provinces only QAP certified EIFS Applicator Company. AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. has been doing an increasing number of repair jobs for people whose stucco is cracking and chipping and who have mould or fungus growing on the wooden framing of their home, due to moisture damage issues caused by poorly applied stucco or EIFS. In fact, repairing the work of other contractors makes up approximately 60 per cent of their workload.

The company renovates all aspects of exteriors. That includes tearing down existing cladding, replacing windows and doors, replacing window and doorjambs, replacing trims and drywall, painting and more. They employ fully qualified painters, framers, plumbers, masons, stucco applicators and soffit and fascia specialists and are prepared to deal with everything they may find revealed within the building envelope. To avoid the worst-case scenarios, I recommend homeowners ask contractors many questions before they get started. Request a list of 15 to 20 references with addresses, names and phone numbers. You don’t have to call everyone on the list, but randomly pick four or five of these. Chat about the homeowner’s experience dealing with the contractor and how they handled unforeseen issues—because every construction job has unforeseen issues. While it’s easy for your potential contractor to write a two-line quote, you should insist that it be extremely detailed, outlining what is going to be taken care of step-by-step. The quote should even include full specs with shop drawings of how the new cladding will be installed. Many contractors intentionally leave items out of the initial quote for the purpose of maintaining a low price, only to add them later once the project starts. If many aspects of the job are not included in the quote, the homeowner may end up paying more than they would have to a reputable contractor.

Those are fundamentals of the job that many contractors in the area are not doing. This leads to leaking windows, mould buildup and rot that will compromise your home’s structural integrity as well as the health of your family. At the moment, AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. is completely renovating the exterior stucco on a four-year old condominium building. The disastrous work done by the first contractor is documented by the company and a lawsuit has been filed by the owners against both the developer and the original contractor. Several of the condominium owners are being forced to sell their units as they can’t afford the additional costs. The problem is a lot of people saw doing exterior stucco as a lucrative business and decided to get on board, even though they have very limited knowledge. Homeowners must ask questions and then demand to see the proof. Ask to see

the homes these contractors say they did 30 years ago and ask to see their certificate of incorporation. That will tell the truth. I am always happy to provide potential clients with a lengthy list of references. My staff and I also take the time to explain their procedures and answer all your questions. Two days after installing the roof vent, we found the temperature of the house was 28C outside and 21C inside. It had dropped seven degrees just because the heat had somewhere to go. hat are you spending your renovation budget on this summer? Summer is a great time to replace old, inefficient windows, doors and siding. Let’s look at a few questions and concerns that arise when changing the exterior of your home. Q: I’m looking into getting new windows for my house this year. What should I be considering in terms of style and features for the frames? A: Vinyl window frames and jambs are going to give you the best bang for your buck. There aren’t a lot of colour options — white or beige are your choices — but they still look great and provide lasting durability with no maintenance.

If it’s a specific colour you’re after, opt for aluminum cladded frames with vinyl jambs. You can contrast or match colours with your exterior siding or stone, and remember there is no maintenance for years to come. For the classic wood look you want for your character home, manufacturers still make wood frame windows. These require a bit of maintenance over the years, such as painting and staining, but will achieve that elegant, traditional look that is complementary to older homes. If you are changing windows, think ahead and consider your exterior insulation. If you plan on installing new siding in the future and want to increase your insulation, you may need to build out your windows and order larger window jambs. Discuss this with your contractor. Q: Everyone is always talking about double pane or triple pane windows. What is the difference and is it worth the investment to go with triple pane? A: The biggest difference is insulation value (R-value). You will get better R-value in triple pane, saving you more money in the long run, but either option saves on your air conditioning and heating bill by reducing solar heat gain during the summer months and cold weather heat loss in the winter.

Q: I’m looking at changing the exterior of my house this year. What are some things I should keep in mind? A: Before choosing an exterior product, you should be thinking about adding more R-value to your exterior walls. This will add to the cost of the renovation but is well worth it in the end as it saves you money in heating and cooling bills. Starting fresh with a new house wrap to keep the elements out is an important part of your house’s envelope. You should remove all the old products off your exterior, not just the siding, but the paper as well. When choosing your exterior product, consider the character of your home and the neighbourhood where you live. Vinyl is budget friendly, available in a variety of colours, and the look is clean and modern with no painting needed in the future. Cement board lasts longer than vinyl, is more of an investment, is available in an assortment of colours, and has a more substantial look. Stucco is your longest lasting option as it withstands the elements far better than vinyl or cement boards. Get the right contractor for the job and discuss all your options and expectations. They will help you choose the product that is right for your house and your budget.

New gardeners must find horticulture overwhelming, and the when and ifs of perennial plant division are no exception. A perennial is supposed to come back every year with an improved state of flowers and foliage, however, there are no guarantees.

he notion of division becoming multiplication is intriguing. Perennial plants that are divided actually produce more plants — multiplying, increasing or adding to your collection. These perennial pieces make excellent 58

currency if you want to trade and increase the scope of your assortment. High on the exchange currency scale are hosta, Alchemilla or lady’s mantle, Heuchera or arum root and, of course, rhubarb — both decorative and edible OUTDOOR LIVING & LANDSCAPES

the division at the same height as it was previously, and then water liberally again. At this point, there is no such thing as enough water. Hosta are shade lovers, so overexposure to sunlight is not an issue, but water regularly for the first couple of days and do not feed them. Newly established roots are tender and the chance of burning them off with synthetic feeds is high. Compost and or good wellrotted manure mixed in with the original soil is always a good idea. Lady’s mantle (Alchemilla) and arum root (Heuchera) are somewhat more demanding than hosta. The base structure of these plants has an almost rhizome-like basal stem system. Often times, these runners will have already started to root on their own, so only require a clipping and you have a new plant. These plants enjoy filtered to good light, so are best moved in the evening, giving them all night and the next morning to settle into their new homes. Follow the same procedure in preparation and soil amendment, consider covering the plants with shade cloth or light fabric until they have perked up. In the event there are no runners with roots, investigate closely and you will see natural formed crowns, or whorls of leaves; this is where you dig. Try to make your spade cut swift and deep, removing as much soil as you can with the new crown.

Rhubarb doesn’t look at all good when it is divided, but it quickly gains strength and lives up to its robust reputation. These roots are very deep and quite large and carrot-like. It is likely you will break the root(s) off when dividing, so be prepared, but not disappointed. Preparation and soil amendment is the same as above, with liberal amounts of manure and compost to hold extra moisture. Some gardeners cut the large leaves in half or more to reduce transpiration, adding to an even more unhappy looking division. The Bridge on 20Th Coming Together as a City to Create Help, Hope & Healing By Tonya Lambert

t’s been nearly 18 years since Linda Chamagne hit rock bottom, struggling to cope with bipolar disorder, street drug addiction and feelings of anger and worthlessness. “I struggled with depression and the belief that as a Métis I could never be good enough,” she explains. “I made plans to commit suicide. [Fortunately], the Lord made a way for me and I invited Him into my life.” Profoundly affected by her experience, Chamagne felt a great desire to spread God’s message of love and healing. This included her dream of establishing a mission in her neighbourhood surrounding 20th Street. Chamagne had spent years unable to accept herself, rejecting the community to which she belonged. In March 1999, Chamagne and five others each contributed $20 to establish a centre where people are welcomed and accepted just as they are, a place where they can share beliefs and learn from one another. Known as The Bridge, the centre began as little more than an over-sized living room where people came together to tell their stories and gain inspiration from others. Initially staffed entirely by volunteers, today The Bridge employs 15 people and utilizes the services of many more helping hands and hearts to serve up to 200 people each day. “I volunteer at The Bridge because it’s more than people coming for soup or coffee. It’s about building relationships and valuing lives,” says volunteer Michael.

The Bridge is transitioning to a new, improved location on 20th Street and Avenue J. “Years ago, we realized we needed to move to a bigger location,” explains Chamagne. “So, in February 2012, we started our capital campaign. In October 2014, we purchased a property and are slowly renovating it as funds become available.” Since May, The Bridge has been providing a safe place and limited services for those in the community in their interim location in the auditorium of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 919 20th Street. In the new facility, The Bridge, as a site of rescue and support, will provide a wide range of services to men, women and children. These range from serving meals and supplying showers and haircuts to addictions counselling and various other ministry programs. Donations of clothing, bedding, towels and toiletries are accepted and distributed in the Give-Away Room. “Our new location will enable us to expand our services to include instruction in meal preparation and nutrition and to open a woodworking shop and sewing and crafts room,” says Chamagne. “A not-for-profit store will sell the items made, providing vocational training.” The new facility will also serve as the infrastructure for The Bridge’s Transitional Program Housing which began two years ago and will be expanded in the future. To date, The Bridge has not received any government funding but relies on the generous financial donations and gifts-in-kind of individuals, churches
