am often asked, “Who do I hire to design my home?� The simple answer: an architectural technologist.
What is an architectural technologist? An architectural technologist is an individual who holds a diploma from a recognized applied science or technology program (SIAST, NAIT or BCIT to name a few) and provides building design
What are the benefits of hiring an architectural technologist? Structural education and knowledge: As mentioned, architectural technologists are trained in building science. In short, this means understanding how a building or building envelope works and how it needs to be constructed in order to achieve the best long term results. Structural integrity is a integral part of the home design and should never be left up to just anyone to design. Building code and bylaw knowledge: Architectural technologists are wellversed in the National Building Code and keep up on all revisions to the code, including the impacts that they can have on both design as well as construction. Professional home builders rely on architectural technologists to have the answers to those tough code interpretations. We also spend time understanding the building bylaws that govern development within cities and towns. This is another area where our expertise is required
to decipher what can and cannot be accomplished for any project. Professional affiliations: Architectural technologists are typically members of the professional association SASTT. This organization requires you to have the correct diploma as well as a number of years work experience prior to granting your membership. Many independent individuals, such as myself, are also members of SRHBA (Saskatoon and Region Home Builders’ Association) where they work for the betterment of the home building industry as a whole. Make sure you do your research into your designer before you hire; their professional affiliations speak volumes about their involvement to their industry. Skilled communicators: Architectural technologists need to be able to communicate effectively with all persons involved in the construction process. This can range from a client who has a limited knowledge of construction, to the skilled tradesperson who is on site. I also use 3D design software on all projects to help communicate more effectively with clients. The use of 3D can save time in design as well as construction because issues or interferences are worked out prior to construction starting. This tool is not offered by every designer, so ask before hiring if this is part of their standard service. evin and Carolyn Engel, the owners of SectionSix Fine Homes, remember the most difficult project they’ve ever had. It’s not like it would be easy for them to forget: they still live in the house. “As a home builder, you never quite forget your first project,” Kevin says. “We did ours in the spring of 2010 and pretty much everything that could have gone wrong did. When we were trying to do the foundation, we got rained on. When we tried to do the framing, we got rained on. Basically throughout that whole construction period we got rained on. But you know, the house still turned out beautiful in the end and we learned a lot from that experience and our subsequent builds. uying a home is often the biggest purchase most people will make in a lifetime. Deciding on the right mortgage can be daunting and often stressful, and there are many factors to consider.

The good news is that low interest rates and fierce competition among financial institutions have temporarily put consumers in the driver’s seat. Here are a few things to consider which may help you when you go shopping for a mortgage: If you’re a first-time homebuyer, finding the down payment for a home can be challenging. If the down payment is preventing you from becoming a homeowner, there are helpful options available. Talk to a mortgage specialist; they can assess your situation and let you know what your options are. For example, you might qualify for a 5% down-payment, high-ratio mortgage from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), but beware of insurance fees of 2.75%. Alternatively, if your annual household income is between $44,500 and $70,000, you could qualify for down-payment assistance through a credit union. For example, Affinity Credit Union’s Equity Building Mortgage provides a loan of up to 5% of the purchase price of a house, which you repay over five years. The Federal Government also allows first-time homebuyers a $5,000
non-refundable income tax credit to help with legal fees and land transfer taxes. In addition, through their Home Buyers’ Plan, buyers who have not owned a home in five years are able to use RRSP funds up to $25,000 to buy a home. Remember though, that money borrowed from an RRSP must be repaid in 15 equal, annual installments, so adjust your budget accordingly. Before you start looking for a home, it is important to get pre-approved for a mortgage to hold the current low rate and to confirm how much you can afford to borrow. This rate can be held for up to 150 days. Mortgages are also offered for different terms, which you may want to change later on. Be sure to ask your mortgage specialist what the payout penalties are and if you can renew your mortgage early if rates drop. Mortgage flexibility is important. Often, financial institutions will consider customizing a mortgage for you, so it pays to shop around. Affinity Credit Union offers a Flex Mortgage to put you in the driver’s seat, enabling you to pay off your mortgage faster by pre-paying any amount or, if you need to, skip a payment. Buying a home is a very exciting event. By taking time to make sense of the mortgage market, you can rest assured that you have covered all the bases that will allow you to make an informed decision, which in the end, will lead you in the right direction.

teve McMorrow makes no bones about it: if he’s asked to offer a quote on a construction job, his price likely won’t be the lowest. But it will be the right price. “I found out very early on in my business that we needed to price jobs so that we could do them properly,” says McMorrow. “That means building enough time into the quote to do a job properly. We might charge a little bit more, but we do it once.”

Renovations and structural remodeling are the core of McMorrow’s business. He says most commonly he’s removing walls and installing beams, meaning that about 60 per cent of the jobs he does have engineers involved. With more than a decade of experience in a very competitive business, McMorrow points to his many repeat customers as proof his philosophy works. “Our expertise allows us to price
things properly. We can essentially see through walls. That is only learned with experience.” The owner of Saskatoon’s McMorrow Construction Ltd. says at least once or twice a season he’ll miss out on a bid and the customer will find out once they open up the walls that there is an expensive surprise waiting for them, but once the job is started the meter is running. The customer finds out then
that his quote would have been cheaper in the long run. “What’s going to keep us in the game is the quality. Anyone can lowball and compete on the financial side, but they can’t always compete for quality.” To control quality, McMorrow insists all the work is done by his own employees. He won’t subcontract any part of the carpentry job. He also makes sure his carpenters are given the appropriate amount of time.“We have a philosophy here that if a guy’s given the time to do his job properly, he will. And that’s served us very well.” He has formed relationships with plumbers and electricians that he trusts, as well as with talented designers and architects. “We’ve also got a really good management team here,” says McMorrow. “They’ve worked closely with a lot of the bigger companies in Western Canada and have seen what has worked
for them and what hasn’t. We’re not doing anything new, I believe, we’re just doing it better.” McMorrow Construction is listed with the Better Business Bureau and is a member of the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders Association Inc. There’s comfort in contracting a company that values its reputation in the community. “Unless you change the scope of the job, we don’t change our price,” says McMorrow. “It’s always been our philosophy. Warming Trends BY MEREDITH HERON
A
s the summer sun starts to fade, I pull out my riding boots and fall wardrobe and wish I had a fireplace to cozy up to. Living in a Victorian home built in 1856, I think it is criminal that my house is without an actual fireplace. As fall arrives each year, I mourn this missing architectural feature. However, there is hope. As a designer, I’ve watched new technologies regarding faux fireplaces come and go. I recall my grandparent’s electric fireplace: it was a log with a lightbulb that flickered to simulate flames, glowing orange and deep red where the
embers seemed to glow. So, you can imagine how I greeted the new electric fireplaces on the market: serious “side eye.” Year after year, I’ve watched them get better and better, and I have finally specified and had one installed for a client. “Doubting Thomas” no more! Our clients own a century home and contacted us after seeing on my Instagram feed some custom cabinetry we had designed for a narrow Victorian. I kid you not: Instagram is a great way to stalk designers like myself if you are so inclined (I’m @meredithheron). They wanted to recreate what I had achieved in my clients’
here. A simple warm “greige” on the ceiling and the contrast between the lead gray walls and ceiling isn’t so noticeable. The wall colour on the ceiling would have been too cave-like — not a good look. The contrast between matte wall paint and high-gloss lacquer adds depth without making the space feel narrow; in fact, it widens it all the more.
project in their own den, which is a former bedroom turned media/den. The room itself is tiny by den standards: 10-feet-by12-feet at most. The plan is to add built-in cabinetry to house an impressive book collection, along with holding audio visual equipment to allow for movie screenings. The clients are huge movie buffs, and the room is also to double as a screening room for their business which they need instead of renting a separate space. There was an existing former woodburning fireplace, but as soon as our contractors got into the room, they discovered it was near collapse, so it had to be carefully removed. We were initially on the fence about whether or not to replace the fireplace, but decided that the space needed it once we got the drawings put together. Our only choice was to go with an electric fireplace because we didn’t have the room to vent, nor did we want to grow the budget that much to suit. To make up for the small scale unit we needed to go with, we chose to design an elaborate mantle that would integrate into the rest of the millwork. I knew that I wanted a high-gloss lacquer finish, but my cabinet maker wasn’t so sure. A quick sample made up by the spray shop, and we were good to go. The secret to working with a small space is to reduce contrast where it counts. I find that if you have dark floors, opting for dark walls is a great way to expand the space. I don’t believe in cutting the wall colour in half or three-quarters and painting the ceiling that colour. If you are going to go with a very dark wall, then you should at least add a colour or a stronger neutral to the ceiling as you see we did

We chose to colour block the books on the shelves because the clients own many antique books that have colourful spines, but they’ve worn with age into a more mutable palette. We’ve mixed in family heirlooms which are both sentimental and a nice break from all books on the shelves. I love shopping from my clients’ own homes not only
because it is good for the budget, but because this is how we weave the story of the client throughout the space. This room could easily be recreated in a condo, so if you are downsizing, don’t think you have to downsize style, function and drama into your new space. There’s always room to build up and visually increase the space you have with a little creativity. contemporary,’ and we can pull six books off the top of our heads and say, ‘See if there is something in here that speaks to you,’ and then build on that to get them into a space they’re going to love.” While encouraging customers to trust the decorator’s expertise, Zurowski and Pethick also emphasize how important it is for their customers feel comfortable with what they are doing, especially when it comes to working within a budget. “Overall, most people who come in here are anxious for a change, [and] not everybody has an infinite budget. We can provide you with products that work with your budget, [and still] get the
look that you want,” says Pethick. She also notes that they will work with what is already in the home, and incorporate a colour pallet to successfully evoke the look and feel that the customer is striving for. These days, what many people seem to want is wallpaper. According to Zurowski, wallpaper has made a huge comeback, not only as an alternative to paint, but also as a way to frame a space, accent a wall, or screen a window to give a room a new look, while saving time and money. “It really is art for your wall,” adds Pethick. “Instead of being the background for the space, it’s the focal point. They’ve come so far with colours, textures and patterns . . . wallpaper is not your grandma’s wallpaper anymore.” With everything from alligator skin, pearl and lined textures, to linen, dimensional and flock fabrics, to damask and floral patterns, to vibrant and matt colours to traditional prints, Zurowski said he would be surprised if anybody else in the city had a larger selection then they do between the 250 wallpaper books in their two locations. He says he doesn’t want to carry products that may cause problems for customers down the road — which can happen when you buy from stores that might carry discontinued or flawed stock that won’t be available later on, if additional flooring is needed. Feature Flooring offers a one-year warranty on labour. They are also willing to do everything necessary to rectify the situation, should issues arise with products that they sell. “We do not want to sell anything we would not install in our own homes,” says Jef. “Our ultimate goal is to make sure we have a happy customer at the end of the day. People may come across problems now and again, but it’s all about how you react to those problems when they arise.” Making customers happy is of the utmost importance to the Fowlers, who genuinely care about everyone who walks through their door, regardless of whether or not they are there to buy something that day. “I think people recognize that we’re an honest, family business,” Jef notes. “In 26 years I have never charged anyone more just because I thought they could afford it.

We want them to be happy, and if that means training them on how to install it, we’ll do that. I am in the store whenever I can be, and I always have my phone on so that I am available to answer any questions.” Jef is even willing to stop by to show customers how it’s done, so they feel more comfortable doing it themselves ― free of charge.

True. You can rule out very quickly in the store the mattresses you don’t like, however mattresses that feel good in the store might not feel that good after a night’s sleep. Always make sure you have a 30 to 60 day sleep satisfaction on your purchase so you can exchange it if it is not working out. Always give a new mattress a 30-day trial period for your body to adjust to the new pressures and the foams to break in. It is important to understand that with a quality mattress, you should never have to buy anything extra to have sleep satisfaction.
Which is better for my back: memory foam or the standard coil mattress?

very day I help people with one of the most important purchases they’ll make: their mattress. Buying a mattress is not rocket science: it all comes down to comfort, comfort, comfort . . . and durability. Nobody knows the best comfort for you other than you. Here are some of the most common questions I get asked, and the answers I give to help the decision making process.

Everybody has different needs for mattress in terms of support and comfort. Always buy a mattress solely on your personal comfort. If everybody had the same needs, I would have just one mattress in the middle of the store and sell different sizes.
What kind of mattress would you recommend for someone who has had back surgery? The first type I would recommend is a foam or pocket coil mattress, because they are a pressure-relieving type of system.
As always, though, only purchase what is comfortable to you.
How often should you replace your mattress? I have heard every eight years, but my mattress has a 25-year warranty. The best time to replace a mattress is when it is no longer comfortable for you. A mattress will last you on average eight to 10 years. A warranty covers defects in a bed, and a bed wearing out is not a warranty issue. Anything past a 15-year non-prorated warranty on a mattress is simply a selling ploy.
What are some of the things to look at when buying a mattress for a toddler? I recommend going with the least amount of foam that you can get away with, and stay away from memory foam, if possible. All foam is petroleum (yes, even soy and latex foams), and memory foams and cheaper foams are the worst for chemicals. Remember, toddlers weigh very little, so what feels soft to you might feel firm to them. Speaking from personal experience, make sure the mattress is comfortable for you as well, because chances are you will fall asleep on it after reading a bedtime story. ettling down for a long winter’s nap may be the way of many as our days shorten and temperatures plummet. Our gardens remain as digital memories now under snow or, at the very least, not looking their best. At this time of the year, I rely on my houseplants to satisfy that “green thumb itch.”
AFRICAN MASK ALOCASIA AMAZONICA
Naturally there are many excursions to the local garden centres, all of which are four-season establishments bulging with not only a great selection of living material, but abounding with household and lifestyle accoutrements. A neverending supply of floral and greenery can also be found at the “box stores”; unfortunately the care and maintenance typically is not the best. What I suggest is spending a little bit more and get good quality and well-maintained houseplants. Given that our homes supply less than desirable growing conditions during the winter months — drier air and low light — be diligent in what you select. Humidity is the biggest problem by far. I know many of you say that you have humidification with your heating system, and that’s grand; however, in order to supply humidity sufficient for most tropical plants, the wallpaper would be peeling off the walls.

Rather than stress your system, it’s much wiser to group your plants together so that they may enjoy collective humidity. Another idea is to prepare a “pebble tray” which is simply a saucer filled with stones that will hold water. Place your houseplants on the stones so that they are not in the water yet will benefit from evaporation. Maintain water in your tray
at all times and you will be pleasantly surprised how your plants react. Misting the foliage is often suggested as a method of increasing humidity and it may work to a degree. I for one just don’t find the time to be misting as often as is required to benefit the plants. A plant that tolerates lower light and typical house conditions that you might consider is African mask, Alocasia amazonica. This tropical beauty has outstanding foliage with very distinct markings. African mask belongs to a family that includes some poisonous relatives and this one is no exception if ingested. If your pets are foliage “munchers,” this is not a great plant for you. Flowers are rather non-descript and sporadic, but the foliage makes up for this by far. Gloxinia, Sinnigia speciosa, is a delightful, bulbous plant belonging to the African violet family. These fuzzy-leafed plants will bloom profusely during the later winter months in hues from deep crimson to mauve and through to white. Once you have a gloxinia, you will or should always have it because they are bulbs that re-grow annually indoors. A great aunt of mine used to water her plants with cold tea, and I have yet to see gloxinias with as spectacular flowers as hers had. Consider these and other houseplants to help you through the darker seasons as you leaf through the seed catalogues; they will help to encourage you along. A damaged or improperly installed windshield may not be able to perform the above criteria during a collision because it no longer has its original strength, and can crack further or even pop right out of the vehicle if it has not been installed properly.
Installation Safety

our windshield does more than keep out the wind and rain. It also gives you a clear view of the road and protects you and your loved ones in the event of an accident. There are many reasons to have your damaged windshield replaced. Although maintaining the aesthetics of your vehicle and avoiding a ticket are good reasons, the biggest motivator should be safety.
Structural Safety What people may not realize is that the windshield plays an integral role in the structural integrity of your vehicle. Besides the fact that cracks and chips can be distracting while driving and impede your vision, damaged windshields may
I would strongly encourage people to make sure that their windshields are being installed properly by a qualified professional. Some of the questions you should always ask when having a windshield replaced are: • Are you following the car maker’s specifications and using OEM (original equipment manufacturer) quality glass and adhesives? • What type of adhesive are you using? They should be automotive urethane not butyl or silicones. • What is the safe drive away time? This is the length of time after installation the urethane needs to cure before it is safe for you to take your vehicle out onto the road. Safe drive times can vary depending on the quality of urethane being used. For example, the
urethanes that we use at Glass Doctor have a one-hour safe drive time, while other urethanes can have safe drive times up to 24 hours. • Are your technicians certified and trained on the products and tools they use? Improper removal and preparation can result in damage to the body or paint that is no longer visible when the windshield has been replaced, but can rust over time.
Insurance and Warranty It is always a good idea to evaluate whether or not additional glass insurance is right for you and your particular vehicle. Windshields can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,200 installed. My recommendation is for people to find out how much their windshield costs to replace, and compare that to the cost of their glass insurance over two to three years, which is the approximate length of time before most windshields will need to be replaced. In most cases glass coverage will likely save you money in the long run. We can also process your SGI claims for you without you having to contact SGI or your insurance broker. Another way to insure yourself is to find out what kind of warranty you are getting on your repairs. For example, at Glass Doctor we offer a lifetime warranty on the installation against leaks or defects and a one year breakage guarantee on the glass. This means we will repair any chips for one full year after installation, and if a chip cannot be repaired we will replace the windshield, glass only, for no additional cost.

ost of us are well aware that our heating and cooling system should be inspected annually. This is best done before the

fall or winter rush. But making sure the furnace is up to snuff is not all one should do. Getting your home’s air ducts cleaned is also a crucial step in ensuring ideal air quality. If you haven’t had your home’s furnace ducts cleaned by a certified professional in the past five years or so, or if you have pets or a dusty or unpleasant
odour when your furnace comes on, it is advisable to consider getting your ducts cleaned by a professional. The most effective way to clean air ducts and a ventilation system is by having the contractor place the system under negative pressure through the use of a specialized truck-mounted vacuum.
As to how often they should be cleaned really depends on the individual household; under normal circumstances, every two to three years is advised. However, if you or someone in your home has allergies you may want to consider having the ducts serviced more often. A comprehensive cleaning of all heating and cooling system components (furnace fan blower, furnace heat exchange, air conditioning coil, humidifier and ducts) will also help air circulation. If you have recently had or are having your furnace upgraded to a more efficient heating system, you should have your heating ducts cleaned, and of course after any type of renovation that has caused a lot of dust (for example, from drywall, plaster or wood cutting projects). Be sure to allot three to four hours of time for the duct cleaners to do the job. Mention any other items that could require cleaning as well, such as your air conditioner coil or dryer vent. Now that the ducts have been cleaned, maintaining cleaner indoor air can be attained by using full-time air purification equipment such as an HRV (heat recovery ventilator) or highefficiency air filtration (hybrid systems). An HRV allows fresh air to enter while exhausting an equal amount of stale air and recovering the heat or cool from the exhaust side and using it to warm or cool fresher air coming in. Air is filtered before being redistributed in the house. Also now available are energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), which return not only heat energy, but moisture to help humidify the home if required. If you suffer from allergies or asthma you can add a HEPA (hybrid) filtration system to the HRV and have fresh, clean air. While you are having your ducts cleaned I would suggest also having your dryer venting cleaned as well. By maintaining clean dryer venting you reduce the risk of fire, save money on energy costs and prolong the life of your dryer. Good air quality in your home is something that will not only make you feel good, but will also make your home environment comfortable for family members with allergies and sensitivities to dust or other airborne particles. EXPERTAdvice Why Winter Stuccoing Works Better

he exterior cladding of a building is very important. It is what protects your home from the outside elements. It is what others see when they drive past. A well-built, smartly-finished building captures people’s attention. A building’s exterior creates value and protects your investment; therefore, it is important that it is done right. Less than a decade ago, it was standard practice in Saskatoon for stucco contractors to apply stucco to building exteriors only during the spring, summer and fall months. This meant a short window of opportunity to complete many

jobs and a multitude of environmental factors with which to contend, including wind, rain and excessive sunlight. (Indeed, spring is the worst possible season for applying stucco because the frequent wetness delays projects and increases the possibility of mould.) Jobs that had not been completed by snowfall were left waiting until the following spring, often resulting in exposure to moisture and the build-up of mould. The result of these hasty applications and projects left sitting unfinished over the winter is costly repairs and renovations, something which AL-RO Acrylic Stucco has been doing a lot of in recent years. As owner, I noticed when AL-RO first opened for business nine years ago that the current method of restricting stucco application to the warmer months of the year had many drawbacks that increased the potential for poor workmanship and the need for repairs and renovations in the future. These raised the cost of owning a home or a business unnecessarily — as did the prolonged
construction period. Finally, the need for contractors to lay off their employees during the winter months meant that many companies had a labour force of mostly inexperienced workers, thereby lowering the quality of their work. To circumvent these issues and create a team of experienced employees, AL-RO began to purchase scaffolding, tarps and heaters. This not only enabled us to do stuccoing during the many long months of winter, but also enabled us to control our climate and environment in a way not possible in the summer, resulting in a higher-quality product. Clients appreciate the savings and the results. Today, we have enough winter work to keep our staff of over 60 experienced employees busy. Indeed, AL-RO does a greater square footage of stuccoing during the winter than in the summer. Experience is the key to providing a long-lasting, good-looking quality product. Stuccoing has changed a lot over the years. It was once comprised
of housing paper, galvanized wire, a scratch coat and a finishing coat of sand and cement. Then, in the 1940s, Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) was developed in Europe, one which greatly increased energy efficiency. In the 1970s, this system was introduced to North America for use mostly on commercial properties. Finally, true EIFS was brought to Saskatoon by AL-RO nine years ago. EIFS consists of several component layers. It is engineered, manufactured and installed as a system. It is not stucco. First, a liquid moisture and air barrier is applied, rather than the stapled housewrap paper previously used. This can also be applied as a vapour barrier, if needed. Next comes a layer of styrofoam insulation. Mechanical fasteners are no longer used; a special adhesive is employed to ensure that the building is securely enveloped and protected. A geometrically-designed cavity is left to allow for any drainage needs resulting from inclement weather or the dew point related moisture. Two polymer modified
base coats follow with a layer of fibreglass mesh in between them. These polymer modified base coats are both crack resistant and durable. Depending on the type of base coat used, some are also rated as non-combustible. Finally, there are two layers of acrylic top coats: a brush coat and an architectural coating. Both acrylic layers can be tinted to the owner’s exact specifications. At AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. in Saskatoon, we have a range of over 1.5 million colours and shades from which customers can choose. While it is possible to apply these tinted acrylic layers on top of existing conventional stucco, it is not recommended. The lower layers of the wall should first be examined to ensure that they are not in need of repair. This system of exterior cladding should only be applied by workers trained according with EIFS Council of Canada guidelines, instructions and specifications. In Saskatchewan, there are only two QAP (Quality Assurance Program) certified Level 4 EIFS mechanics by EFIS Council
of Canada, and they are both with AL-RO. The EIFS Council of Canada is a national third party regulatory body that oversees the development, maintenance of standards, training and licensing involved with this premier form of cladding. The only QAP certified EIFS applicator company in Saskatchewan is also AL-RO Acrylic Stucco. Like EIFS, doing stucco or plaster work is a craft. Stuccoing and plastering are skills that have been proudly passed on from father to son in Europe for many generations. A good stucco craftsman creates durable works of art that are pleasing to the eye, easy on the pocketbook and of sound, durable construction. hile cleaning out my grandparents’ basement recently, my family and I found a spool of 8mm film from several decades ago. We watched in delight, as children and adults danced around a cramped house in flared skirts and suits. It all seemed so very fancy and out of reach. Indeed, the way people congregate and the sense of community has changed drastically in the last few decades as we have become prone to embracing our casual comfort zones. By re-introducing some simple habits we can rediscover the art of hosting and have a greater

sense of pride in welcoming people into our homes.
Greeting guests Take jackets at the door. If you have a small number of guests, hang their coats in the closet instead of leaving it to them to find a place. Don’t assume they’ll be comfortable opening your closet to find a hanger. If you have a lot of guests, store coats on a bed. It can be fun for guests to search for their coat at the end of the night on a bed piled high with them.
Thank your guests for coming and encourage them to make themselves at home. Lead them to the kitchen, living room or wherever you have decided to congregate.
Attention to attire It can be nice to give people the opportunity to get out of their blue jeans and play dress-up. It doesn’t have to be the holiday season, when they are more common, for a fancy dress party. Hosting a fancy dress Valentine’s Day party can be fun for couples and singles — it can
take the pressure off people who have trouble coming up with romantic ideas for their partners and give single friends a chance to get out of the house. Or, throw a fancy dress party just for the sake of throwing one!
Cocktails and canapés In Saskatchewan, beer is popular. But, BYOB can be done on whim and often. For something a little more special, print out some cocktail recipes and set up a section of your kitchen counter as the bar. While it’s only necessary to choose a handful of drinks, be sure to have a healthy variety, as well as something unexpected that people aren’t likely to have tried. Mixing drinks is fun for everyone, so take turns playing bartender. Make the drink for the first person who arrives, they can make the drink for the next guest, and so on. Keep in mind that most guests don’t like to come empty handed, so make a list of what you need for the bar and ask each guest to pick up one item.

Just as women benefit from the company of other women, so do men benefit from the company of other men, however, they are less likely to have that on a regular basis. Encourage the branching off of your male guests by buying a box of cigars and allowing a room or garage to act as the smoke room. Setting up a snack table can serve a number of functions. People like to eat so they will naturally gravitate to the food, and this can serve as a way for guests to introduce themselves to each other in a way that’s more comfortable than simply walking across a room to someone new. No one likes to be hungry and setting out food will show guests that you have taken the time to care for them and make sure they are comfortable.

8 oz. fresh cranberries 1 C sugar 1 C water 20 mint leaves 2 tbsp lime juice Ice 4 oz. rum 4–6 oz. soda water
1. Place cranberries, sugar, and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Then lower the heat a bit to medium-low and continue to cook for about 10 minutes, before your berries start bursting. Remove from heat. 2. Once the berry mixture has cooled, you can strain them. If you prefer, you can keep the mixture in the fridge for a couple hours or overnight before straining. 3. Put about 10 leaves of mint and a tbsp of lime juice in each glass. 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup water 10 whole cloves 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 peppercorns, whole 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (to taste) 1 orange, juiced 1 bottle red wine Cinnamon sticks (optional)
1. Combine all ingredients except wine in a pan and boil for five minutes. 2. Reduce heat, add wine. Heat to the point where it is just before boiling. (Try to avoid boiling; the alcohol will begin to evaporate.) 3. Strain into cups and serve hot. 4. Garnish with cinnamon sticks, if desired. Serves four.

You all know I am about making things look great with a practical approach. I am a firm believer in having “exquisite” jewellery (or the “fluff and baubles”) while maintaining a simplistic, yet everso-chic, neutral outfit (or the “big items” in a room). What this does is allow your space to evolve and change easily and affordably throughout time; it’s easier to change out a few lamps and paintings rather than start all over with a new sofa.

elieve it or not, there are some people out there who dislike shopping. I know, I know… as impossible as that sounds, this is something I’ve encountered many times during my career. There are also people out there who love shopping. Regardless of which type you are, I have the shopping aspect of home decorating down to a science. Let’s take a look at Tracy and Scott Gyug’s recent project and review some basic shopping tips. I’ve worked with the Gyugs on previous projects. The most recent was creating a vignette for their new home. Now, Tracy admits she loves shopping. But we still employed a few basics for the project.

There is nothing that can ruin a space easier than items that are too small or too large for the room. Always measure allowable space, and when you’re out shopping take a measuring tape! Tracy says, “Chantelle is able to use scale to create a whole look for a room. I highly recommend her for her ideas.”
Furniture: Plan, Plan, Plan “Chantelle knows what works. She looks around your house for character and picks up on what you like,” explains Tracy. For this particular project, the planning process involved utilizing already-owned items the Gyugs love. From our previous projects together, we purchased a curio cabinet that worked well in the new space. So part of our process was to incorporate this piece of existing furniture into the vignette.
Be as Efficient as Possible Tracy laughs, “I like shopping. Chantelle is good at it, and involves me with all the decisions! She has the intent right from the beginning to make your home for you.” When I shop with clients for items for their new space, I don’t dwell on the fact that they may not like something I pick out. We move onto finding an item that works for them. So whether or not you’re a fan of shopping, enlisting the help of a decorator can make your shopping trip truly pay off. As Tracy notes, “At the end of the day, Chantelle makes it easy to go home to a place you love.”
