Feels Like Home

A Look at Some of the Best Places to Live in and Around Saskatoon 8

FineHomes

SASKATOON

H

ow do you choose a community in which to live? There are a variety of factors that influence one’s decision of calling a place home. Location, housing options, appeal of the community, amenities and lifestyle are the top features homebuyers weigh in on when looking for a place in which to plant their roots. In and around Saskatoon, residents have plenty of housing options. Condo or estate? Urban or rural? Views of the downtown landscape or countryside scenery? Location is the top deciding factor for homebuyers, and is as personal as one’s taste in music. Influences on location include: life stages (are you looking for a place to raise a family, or a home in which to retire?); place of employment (do you prefer a short drive, long commute or use public transportation?); high-quality schooling (do you have children and what are their ages?); and proximity to shopping and entertainment facilities (what are your recreational pursuits?). Some people may think they have to choose between the “livability” — the elements of a place that lend to quality living, such as housing prices, crime statistics and education systems — and the “vibrancy” of a community, or the amenities that support recreation, entertainment and culture. Saskatoon’s housing prices rank high in the national average, but residents get a lot of “bang” for their buck. With the economy remaining strong each year and with consistent population growth, it appears that Saskatoon is indeed accepted as a livable city. Pair this livability with the bustling arts, culture and recreation offered year-round (in 2006, Saskatoon was recognized as the Culture Capital of Canada by the Department of Canadian

Heritage) and it’s obvious why so many residents call Saskatoon home. The appeal of the community is a powerful influence. After all, who wants to move in to a neighbourhood that doesn’t emanate that “homey” feeling? Living amongst like-minded neighbours is what creates that sense of community. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to areas where they can step out their backdoors and be immersed in adventures such as hiking, biking, snowmobiling and golfing. Other residents covet “close to the action” locations, with entertainment venues and shopping nearby. From expansive estate-style lots to tight-knit condominium residences, Saskatoon has a breadth of housing options. The city is fortunate to have a pool of dedicated, quality developers and builders that take pride in creating homes and neighbourhoods in which to live. Whether you’re seeking a new build or renovating, thinking of urban living or a rural community, finding a place to put down roots is a fun and exciting journey. The following pages highlight some of the best places to live in and around Saskatoon: the green urban village of Evergreen; the up-and-coming golf community of Pinnacle Ridge; Blackstrap, Saskatchewan’s year-round recreational hot-spot; the upscale rural community of Grasswood Estates; and Rosewood, the community promoting natural wetlands and conservation in its development. Take a look around—you’ll be delighted with the different neighbourhoods that have everything you’re looking for in a place to call home.

With three elementary schools and two high schools, the neighbourhood has emerged as one of the city’s most family-friendly areas. Nearby recreational facilities mean the whole family can keep busy year-round. Amenities include: the Forestry Farm, SaskTel Sports Centre, ACT arena and the City of Saskatoon’s Fitness Circut & Terry Fox Track. Dreaming of a neighbourhood that offers green options and is surrounded by nature? Evergreen awaits your visit.

magine the backyard of your home leading out to an 18-hole, championship golf course, and beyond that lay the beautiful prairies. Sunset views and spacious lots create a luxurious lifestyle for both the avid golfer and the non-golfer. Golf community living is a serene lifestyle. Many different communities offer a good mix of housing options: from condos to town homes, to bungalows to walkouts. Lots on a golf course development often sell for premium prices, and the idea of a well-maintained, luscious golf course coupled with upscale living often

facilitates a rapid sale of the lots and completed housing. Amenities are aplenty in golf communities: the club house is the centre of the action, and often houses various events for members and the community. Between a pool and private tennis courts, it’s not just your golf game you can improve in a golf community. Many golf developments also incorporate walking and biking trails several kilometres long that wind along the course and through the neighbourhood. Although many people who live in prestigious golf communities are not

golfers, the majority regularly hit the links. One of the biggest attractions about this lifestyle is the easy access to the course and the increase in time one has to practice and play. It’s undeniable: the views are breathtaking year round. From the lush greens and manicured grounds in the summer, to the pristine landscape dusted with snow in the winter, the beauty of these elite communities are sought after by discerning homeowners. A relaxing and recreational lifestyles awaits. Discover the prestige of a golf community.

PINNACLE RIDGE ESTATES & GOLF CLUB: Play Where You Live‌ Live Where You Play! BY TONYA LAMBERT PHOTOS MEGAN ANTONIUK PHOTOGRAPHY

P

innacle Ridge Estates & Golf Club is poised to become the crowning glory of Saskatoon’s gated estate communities. Located just five minutes northeast of Saskatoon on Highway 41, this prime piece of property will offer residents a quiet place of retreat and leisurely outdoor activity at the end of a busy work day. This prestigious community will consist of over 300 estate lots of half acre to three-quarters of an acre surrounding a championship

7,300-yard, 18-hole golf course, as well as approximately 140 luxury townhouse units . . . all on over 500 acres. Pinnacle Ridge Estates will be located on one of the highest pieces of land between it and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The gentle undulations of the land give it a terracing effect with the lots having been designed to maximize the spectacular views. Imagine sitting on your deck and enjoying a glass of your

favourite wine while gazing out at the vivid pink, orange and red brushstrokes of a prairie sunset until they slowly fade away to reveal the twinkling lights of the city on the horizon. In your luxury dream home at Pinnacle Ridge Estates, you will enjoy a million dollar view without a million dollar price tag. Pinnacle Ridge Estates will be a bare land condominium, thereby allowing the residents to control the quality and

standards of the infrastructure and its maintenance. The community will have full city services, including power, gas, telephone and internet, and will utilize City of Saskatoon water while maintaining its own water recovery facility, designed and built by EcoLibra Systems Ltd., a local Saskatoon company. All the estate roads will be paved with snow removal overseen by the condominium board, guaranteeing that clear winter roadways will be a priority. Upon completion, Pinnacle Ridge Golf Club will be one of the top courses in the province. Professionally created by Puddicombe Golf Design of Edmonton, the course will incorporate the existing terrain to maximum effect while adding roughly 5,000 trees to the landscape. The golf course has been fashioned in such a way that with some strategic pin placement and contour mowing the rippling effect of the land can be fashioned to accommodate a wide range of skill levels, creating an enjoyable golfing experience for everyone. To cap it all off, the proposed clubhouse

will include a restaurant, lounge, pro shop, fitness centre and health spa. Pinnacle Ridge will be the perfect place to live for those who desire an active outdoor lifestyle. Besides the first-rate golf course, the plans for the community also include tennis courts, a swimming pool, several playgrounds and parks, all connected by picturesque nature trails. In the winter months, professionally groomed ski trails, sledding hills and skating ponds will be conveniently located throughout the community. It truly will be a place where you can “play where you live and live where you play.” Lots in this prestigious community are now pre-selling, starting at $179,900 with architectural guidelines in place. Construction on the first phase (85 lots and 9 holes of the golf course) is scheduled to begin in the spring. Those interested in purchasing a premium lot in this planned paradise should contact either Gary Busch at CENTURY 21 Fusion or Ron Baliski at Ron Baliski Realty Inc.

EXPERTAdvice The Benefits of Hiring an Architectural Technologist for your Home Design services within the scope of part nine of the National Building Code. We are trained in architectural design as well as building sciences and technology. Many architectural technologists are employed in architecture or engineering firms, or with municipal authorities such as town offices or building inspection firms. Many, such as myself, provide independent professional services that specifically cater to the needs of the residential design client.

By Krista Martens Architectural Technologist, A. Sc. T. LEED Green Associate Beyond Measure Design Inc. 306.974.3955 info@beyondmeasuredesign.ca www.beyondmeasuredesign.ca

I

am often asked, “Who do I hire to design my home? The simple answer: an architectural technologist.

What is an architectural technologist? An architectural technologist is an individual who holds a diploma from a recognized applied science or technology program (SIAST, NAIT or BCIT to name a few) and provides building design

What are the benefits of hiring an architectural technologist? Structural education and knowledge: As mentioned, architectural technologists are trained in building science. In short, this means understanding how a building or building envelope works and how it needs to be constructed in order to achieve the best long term results. Structural integrity is a integral part of the home design and should never be left up to just anyone to design. Building code and bylaw knowledge: Architectural technologists are wellversed in the National Building Code and keep up on all revisions to the code, including the impacts that they can have on both design as well as construction. Professional home builders rely on architectural technologists to have the answers to those tough code interpretations. We also spend time understanding the building bylaws that govern development within cities and towns. This is another area where our expertise is required

to decipher what can and cannot be accomplished for any project. Professional affiliations: Architectural technologists are typically members of the professional association SASTT. This organization requires you to have the correct diploma as well as a number of years work experience prior to granting your membership. Many independent individuals, such as myself, are also members of SRHBA (Saskatoon and Region Home Builders’ Association) where they work for the betterment of the home building industry as a whole. Make sure you do your research into your designer before you hire; their professional affiliations speak volumes about their involvement to their industry. Skilled communicators: Architectural technologists need to be able to communicate effectively with all persons involved in the construction process. This can range from a client who has a limited knowledge of construction, to the skilled tradesperson who is on site. I also use 3D design software on all projects to help communicate more effectively with clients. The use of 3D can save time in design as well as construction because issues or interferences are worked out prior to construction starting. This tool is not offered by every designer, so ask before hiring if this is part of their standard service. Before you start your next new home design make sure you take the time to look up an architectural technologist. We are the right professionals for your residential project.

HOMES BUILT FROM THE INSIDE OUT BY MATTHEW STONE PHOTOS HEATHER FRITZ

K

evin and Carolyn Engel, the owners of SectionSix Fine Homes, remember the most difficult project they’ve ever had. It’s not like it would be easy for them to forget: they still live in the house. “As a home builder, you never quite forget your first project,” Kevin says. “We did ours in the spring of 2010 and pretty much everything that could have gone wrong did. When we were trying to do the foundation, we got rained on. When we tried to do the framing, we got rained on. Basically throughout that whole construction period we got rained on. But you know, the house still turned out beautiful in the end and we learned a lot from that experience and our subsequent builds. You get better every time.” Five projects later, SectionSix Fine Homes is emerging as one of the premier contractors in the Warman/Saskatoon area. Their focus is to build fine homes in the area around Saskatoon, and by their own admission, they have no interest in becoming high volume home builders. Committed to a higher standard of construction, they want to be doing no more than ten projects a year, which they believe will allow them to focus on quality above all else. They also want to provide a personalized service to their customers, where the construction is supervised daily and they are fully transparent and cooperative with the buyers. They only work with the best tradesmen, forgoing the “lowest bidder” mode of operation that leaves so many families with costly repairs and mounting bills just a short few years later. “As builders, we know we have to earn the trust of our clients,” says Kevin. “To do so requires a high level of integrity. We are committed to complete honesty and transparency in the way we do business, with both clients and subcontractors. We always say that great people build great houses, and that is something we will always stick by.” This is an important attitude to adopt, and the Engels understand that a house is likely the single biggest investment most people will make in their lifetime. That is why it’s so important to do things right; they want to build a house that will last a hundred years. That extends from

the basic fundamentals right up to the aesthetics of the house. If the elevation is proper, if the framing is done the best possible way, then the rest will follow. They don’t want to cut corners, because their pride in their work comes from the quality of their creations. The philosophy of the Engels didn’t just come overnight; they spent years as farmers and they credit that time for shaping the core values that they live by as home builders.

Homes is not interested in low bidding with companies from whom they can’t guarantee the best quality finishing. Also, they are not interested in rushing the process. Getting things right is more important than quick solutions that will end up costing more later on. Right now, they are building homes in the six- to eight- month range, which Kevin feels is a good time period to make sure the build is done with the utmost care.

neighbourhood. It comes with an office in the finished basement and two fireplaces among other things.

“I’m from a farm,” says Kevin. “I don’t know if that means much to anybody but that means a lot to me. Business in farming is done with a high level of integrity; deals are often secured with a simple handshake. Farmers understand that cheapness and value are not the same thing. They are not mutually exclusive.”

“There is always the temptation with clients to tell them what they want to hear,” he says. “Like many of the other fantastic high quality home builders in Saskatchewan, we too want to make sure our customers know that a slightly longer time frame is the best course of action. We build from the inside out, not the other way around, and in doing so we can’t guarantee we can rush it to you in a matter of weeks.”

“We want to show people a vision of what they can get,” says Kevin. “It’s possible to have the home you always dreamed of. Why settle for less with something that is so important?”

For proof of the quality of work that SectionSix Fine Homes does, you need only to view some of their past projects on their website. Included is the Engels’ own home, a 2,700-square-foot Cape Cod style house that embodies exactly what SectionSix Homes is about. It’s fully serviced and sits on a small acreage with a retro design. It was built under tough conditions, but it still came out looking fabulous and has served the Engels very well indeed. For their current project, they are building a 1,800-square-feet, three bedroom home in Saskatoon’s Rosewood

So what can you expect (besides the aforementioned excellent integrity and service) when you build a home with SectionSix Fine Homes? You can trust in not only the builders, but their ability to bring in the best tradespeople to do the work on your future home. Highly reputable sub-contractors from the Saskatoon area are frequent collaborators with SectionSix Fine Homes, and this is an important detail that cannot be overlooked. The last thing you want to happen if you are spending a considerable amount of money on a quality home is to have to come back and deal with issues a few years down the line. SectionSix Fine

Speaking of his projects, Kevin beams with pride. He knows he has stiff competition in the area with other fine homebuilders, so each project he takes he knows needs to represent the high standards that he thinks embodies SectionSix Fine Homes.

EXPERTAdvice Buying a Home That’s Still Under Construction

daily. Are they custom homes? Are they speculative homes? Or is there an opportunity to meet right in the middle and customize a home that is already under construction? The answer is yes. Many builders will start the construction process as they have floor plans that are tweaked and mastered and know best which type of home is best suited for a particular lot. Buying a home already under construction just may be an option for you.

Call the Builder

Jessica Betteridge Hallmark Realty 5-3012 Louise Street Saskatoon 306.477.0111 (office) 306.229.9687 (cell) jessicabetteridge@shaw.ca www.hallmarkrealty.ca

“Look honey! That looks like it’s going to be a gorgeous home!” “Hmmmm, no sold sign. I wonder if it’s available.” “There’s the builders’ number . . . let’s call and see what the scoop is!”

H

ave you ever had a conversation similar to this? Perhaps while you’re sipping your Starbucks while taking a leisurely drive through newer areas of Saskatoon? A home under construction is not necessarily sold. With so much growth in the city, you will see new homes popping up

30

SASKATOON

Your interest is piqued. You pick up the phone and call the number on the sign. What have you got to lose?

Most builders require a larger deposit on a home, naturally, if you are customizing the finishings to your liking. You have the financial plan in place and have confirmed the builder is right for you, so you make the builder an offer and seal the deal.

Work with the Builder to Design the Home Now the fun part: you make this home your own! The years of flipping though design magazines can come to life. You work with the builder and follow their expertise as they guide you through the entire process.

You find out the home is available and scheduled to be completed with enough time to sell your current home on the spring market. After more discussion, you find out the cabinetry, countertops and flooring are still an option to choose: you can design your dream kitchen! After taking a walk through the home under construction, you discover the layout is perfect and the natural light is abundant.

Sell Your Existing Home

Call a Licensed Realtor for Current Home Evaluation

The final steps of construction are complete. You finish up your packing, knowing that after a few bank meetings and a visit to the lawyer’s office you will be sipping coffee in your new kitchen.

You call a licensed realtor for a market evaluation on your current home so you know realistic numbers to work with. You research the builder to make sure you have 100 per cent confidence in the delivery of the product promised.

Review Your Plan with Your Bank/Mortgage Representative Next, you discuss with your mortgage representative if buying a home currently under construction is an option for you.

In the meantime, you work steadily on your existing home, getting it ready to put on the market. Your licensed realtor comes in and gets to work. The price is attractive and all your preparation pays off: the house sells!

Move in to Your Brand New Home

You pull up to your new home. The outside is perfect (after all, you chose everything). Inside, the morning sunshine glistens across your gorgeous hardwood. You open cabinets and slide your fingers over the polished new granite. You take a deep breath and smile at your mate across the room: you both love it.

EXPERTAdvice Making Mortgages Make Sense

B

uying a home is often the biggest purchase most people will make in a lifetime. Deciding on the right mortgage can be daunting and often stressful, and there are many factors to consider.

Jessica Retzleff Mobile Mortgage Specialist with Affinity Credit Union Saskatoon and Area 306.281.4342 jessica.retzleff@affinitycu.ca

The good news is that low interest rates and fierce competition among financial institutions have temporarily put consumers in the driver’s seat. Here are a few things to consider which may help you when you go shopping for a mortgage: If you’re a first-time homebuyer, finding the down payment for a home can be challenging. If the down payment is preventing you from becoming a homeowner, there are helpful options available. Talk to a mortgage specialist; they can assess your situation and let you know what your options are. For example, you might qualify for a 5% down-payment, high-ratio mortgage from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), but beware of insurance fees of 2.75%. Alternatively, if your annual household income is between $44,500 and $70,000, you could qualify for down-payment assistance through a credit union. For example, Affinity Credit Union’s Equity Building Mortgage provides a loan of up to 5% of the purchase price of a house, which you repay over five years. The Federal Government also allows first-time homebuyers a $5,000

non-refundable income tax credit to help with legal fees and land transfer taxes. In addition, through their Home Buyers’ Plan, buyers who have not owned a home in five years are able to use RRSP funds up to $25,000 to buy a home. Remember though, that money borrowed from an RRSP must be repaid in 15 equal, annual installments, so adjust your budget accordingly. Before you start looking for a home, it is important to get pre-approved for a mortgage to hold the current low rate and to confirm how much you can afford to borrow. This rate can be held for up to 150 days. Mortgages are also offered for different terms, which you may want to change later on. Be sure to ask your mortgage specialist what the payout penalties are and if you can renew your mortgage early if rates drop. Mortgage flexibility is important. Often, financial institutions will consider customizing a mortgage for you, so it pays to shop around. Affinity Credit Union offers a Flex Mortgage to put you in the driver’s seat, enabling you to pay off your mortgage faster by pre-paying any amount or, if you need to, skip a payment. Buying a home is a very exciting event. By taking time to make sense of the mortgage market, you can rest assured that you have covered all the bases that will allow you to make an informed decision, which in the end, will lead you in the right direction.

ETHICAL BUSINESS & PRIDE IN WORKMANSHIP: McMorrow Construction Ltd. BY PAUL SINKEWICZ

S

teve McMorrow makes no bones about it: if he’s asked to offer a quote on a construction job, his price likely won’t be the lowest. But it will be the right price. “I found out very early on in my business that we needed to price jobs so that we could do them properly,” says McMorrow. “That means building enough time into the quote to do a job properly. We might charge a little bit more, but we do it once.”

36

FineHomes

SASKATOON

Renovations and structural remodeling are the core of McMorrow’s business. He says most commonly he’s removing walls and installing beams, meaning that about 60 per cent of the jobs he does have engineers involved. With more than a decade of experience in a very competitive business, McMorrow points to his many repeat customers as proof his philosophy works. “Our expertise allows us to price

things properly. We can essentially see through walls. That is only learned with experience.” The owner of Saskatoon’s McMorrow Construction Ltd. says at least once or twice a season he’ll miss out on a bid and the customer will find out once they open up the walls that there is an expensive surprise waiting for them, but once the job is started the meter is running. The customer finds out then

that his quote would have been cheaper in the long run. “What’s going to keep us in the game is the quality. Anyone can lowball and compete on the financial side, but they can’t always compete for quality.” To control quality, McMorrow insists all the work is done by his own employees. He won’t subcontract any part of the carpentry job. He also makes sure his carpenters are given the appropriate amount of time.“We have a philosophy here that if a guy’s given the time to do his job properly, he will. And that’s served us very well.” He has formed relationships with plumbers and electricians that he trusts, as well as with talented designers and architects. “We’ve also got a really good management team here,” says McMorrow. “They’ve worked closely with a lot of the bigger companies in Western Canada and have seen what has worked

for them and what hasn’t. We’re not doing anything new, I believe, we’re just doing it better.” McMorrow Construction is listed with the Better Business Bureau and is a member of the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders Association Inc. There’s comfort in contracting a company that values its reputation in the community. “Unless you change the scope of the job, we don’t change our price,” says McMorrow. “It’s always been our philosophy. If we write a contract we’ll stand behind it.” It is that ethical way of doing business, and the pride in the workmanship, that attracts the best employees to McMorrow Construction. The company treats them right and benefits from longterm relationships. “If a guy is working for us, he has experience and he’s a quality carpenter.”

right away,” says Porrelli, who was voted as the RE/MAX Saskatoon Rookie of the Year in 2007. “I loved that every day was different and changing, and that no two clients or deals are the same. Every deal is personalized for that particular client. It's fun to spend time with your clients and actually get to know them.” Porrelli began her career at a good time, when the Saskatoon market exploded

and housing was at a premium. “Our average sale price had been well below that of other major centres for quite a while,” she explained. “Over the course of months, the market took a sharp turn in correcting itself and increased significantly. That's right when I started. We were dealing with multiple offers and a very high-paced market. That provided a wealth of experience in a short amount of time. It was very much a sink-or-swim scenario."

Swim, she did. Every day is an adventure for Porrelli, who assists both buyers and sellers through what can sometimes be an overwhelming experience. “I find that a lot of it is providing a service to make the transactions smooth for them,” says Porrelli. “I like to feel like I’m working alongside them to help them make the right decisions, show them the way and guide them without them feeling like they’re being pushed into something or being told what to do.” Sellers receive the same special treatment from this dedicated real estate agent with the specialized RE/MAX “Fit to Sell” home staging program. “This gives my clients a push in the right direction in getting their house set up and to present their house in the best light possible,” says Porrelli, who also encourages sellers to seek the advice of professional stagers. In addition, her involvement in “Tranquilli-T,” a unique insurance program, can insure a real estate transaction on either the buying or the selling end. Porrelli also works closely with Leila Goluboff and Stacey Edwards to ensure seamless service to her clients. "It's good to have the support of two reliable agents that I know I can ask for assistance when I am out of town," she says. With a high amount of new clients coming to Porrelli based on referrals, client satisfaction speaks for itself. “She consistently demonstrated a professional and friendly demeanor as well as availability to answer questions, view homes, and assist us in every way,” say former clients Mattias and Jan Andreae. “We appreciate the personal touches she added to make it seem less like a business transaction and more of a coordinated effort. We will, and have, recommended her without hesitation.” Angela Porrelli 306.242.6000 C: 306.291.4664 angelaporrelli.com. PICTURED Angela Porrelli

or Saskatoon area REALTOR® Wayne Grier, finding his clients a home, rather than simply a house, is the most fulfilling part of the job. “A good home is integral to a family’s well being,” says Wayne. “I’m here to find my clients a great home in an ideal location, that really fits their family’s lifestyle and needs.” With 21 years of experience, Wayne has built a reputation as a nopressure agent and as a top producer.

Wayne works with his clients as a team, emphasizing communication. “I do a lot more listening than talking,” he says. “I want to know what my clients’ priorities are.” Wayne’s objectives include explaining the home purchasing process, showing properties that meet his clients’ criteria, and advising on negotiating the best terms. “I ask a number of questions, give my clients my cell phone number, and am always available.”

An industry leader in both sales and education, Wayne is educated in real estate brokerage, management, law, appraisal, economics, design, construction, relocation expertise and commercial real estate. He is a licensed REALTOR® and associate broker, accredited buyer representative, CERC relocation specialist, and past president of a real estate board. “My experience and knowledge allows me to help focus my clients on what’s really important,” says Wayne.

So what are his tips for finding your ideal home? First, he emphasizes the importance of getting pre-qualified. “This removes the guess work and saves time, as you’ll only see homes within your price range,” says Wayne. Getting pre-qualified also enables buyers to act quickly and helps sellers to consider an offer that is as good as cash. Wayne suggests next deciding on potential locations and outlining your home needs and desired features. At this stage he provides clients with a list of homes that meet their requirements and then schedules viewings. “I’m always on top of what’s going on in the market, what home prices are in different neighbourhoods, and current home repair costs. I will put you in touch with the other quality professionals you’ll need to make the experience hasslefree,” says Wayne. When viewing homes, Wayne recommends looking at the house from across the street, having all the lights turned on, opening closet doors, and checking the condition of the back yard and fencing. Others suggestions include checking interior corners for signs of mould, observing paint condition, and looking at surrounding homes to see their condition (as this can affect the property’s

value). Wayne emphasizes the importance of staying on track. “If you know in the first five minutes that this one is off the list, don’t bother finishing the viewing,” he says. Homeowner and client Margeurite Briglio says Wayne’s service is the best in the business. “He made himself available to answer all my questions, offered in-depth market information and provided trustworthy support and assistance throughout the entire process,” says Margeurite. CRAFTSMANSHIP COUNTS FOR BUILDER BROTHERS BY PAUL SINKEWICZ PHOTOS HEATHER FRITZ

H

omebuilders Bob and Dave Pawluk know the importance of laying a solid foundation. That’s why they have been working so diligently for six years, sweating the details on each home they build. Their reputation for quality is the foundation of Pawluk Homes, and based on the booming referral business they are enjoying, homebuyers in Saskatoon and area are noticing. “When people walk into our houses we get comments on the quality of workmanship, and that’s due to the fact that we’ve got a great team,” says Arlene Hretsina, customer service manager at Pawluk Homes. “They care about quality in every facet of a build, and that carries through to their staff and contractors. Pawluk Homes serves pretty much every demographic: newlyweds looking for a starter home, couples looking to downsize, growing families seeking more space and couples building their dream home . . . Bob and Dave can meet those needs. “We pay attention to each of our client’s specific needs and with us being a small family business, no one gets lost in the shuffle,” says Dave. The brothers have 25 years of collective experience in the building trade, and have been partners for six years. They take a lot of pride in their workmanship; they put themselves in their client’s shoes. Bob says the firm also has a great team of contractors they’ve been working with a long time. “We look at our team of contractors as respectfully proud professionals. That is why our homes reflect that refined finished end result. They know what our expectations are, and they have the same values in terms of quality.” In-house designer Rachel Jones says clients appreciate the finer touches they will find in a build by Pawluk Homes, like granite/quartz countertops, or custom tiled showers, for example. “With our homes, upscale faucets, glass or stone backsplashes, maple cabinetry and hardwood floors are all standard. When I overhear comments at open houses, people are impressed by what Pawluk Homes considers standard finishes.” Jones is available to help clients make good design decisions. “The suppliers L-R Dave Pawluk, Bob Pawluk L-R Arlene Hretsina, Rachel Jones

we work with are also great, so we’re very comfortable sending our clients to them. They work with the client and are really part of our design team.” Jones explains. Each custom build starts with a consultation where the client is walked through the entire process. There are many details in building a custom home that are new to many people, so communication and collaboration are key. The fun part for the homeowners is getting to select the lighting, flooring, wall colours and anything else they want. They will get guidance on the timeline for making their choices and communication throughout the build to help avoid unnecessary delays. There are a variety of home designs available from Pawluk, or clients can work with the design team to craft the home of their dreams. And if a client wants to build in a particular area, Pawluk Homes will acquire a lot in the next available draw. The company is active in each of the burgeoning neighbourhoods of Evergreen, Hampton Village, Rosewood, Kensington and Rockwood in Warman. Sometimes a client will want one of the homes in the Pawluk inventory of current projects, but will customize some of the options. Each year the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association Inc. hosts the Parade of Homes as part of the Children’s Wish Home Lottery. Pawluk Homes participated in the event again this fall. Bob, Dave and the team thank the public for visiting all of the homes in this year’s parade and for supporting the Children’s Wish Foundation. Pawluk Homes is a Certified ENERGY STAR Builder and a member of the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association. All of their new homes have a two-year mechanical, five-year foundation and exclusive 10-year structural warranty so customers can feel confident with the investment in their new home. With a lifetime guarantee on installation, you can count on your STOR-X organizational system to last as long as you need it. Turcotte points out that the materials are made from a durable, three-

quarter-inch, 2-D laminate with melamine finish. All materials are subject to a stress test by the engineering staff. “The durability is great. It won’t sag or break and we can match your flooring and wall colour with our design software,” he says. After a consultation, you will soon see a positive solution to tight spaces and disorganized rooms. All storage systems are fully customized to fit your needs and your lifestyle. are as lovely as they are functional. “Everything is custom fit and I do all the designs myself,” remarks Turcotte. He goes on to explain that the customer’s needs are top priority. All things are taken into account when designing the storage systems. “We take everything into consideration for the space, including placement of windows, doors, trim height and depths, switches, plugs, registers and more,” he adds. The units can be set up by one person and there are no delays in getting your system installed.

Presently, aside from Turcotte and his wife, there are two other top-rated employees at the Saskatoon location who are fully trained for designing and installation. Quality service and customer satisfaction are of utmost importance for the entire team at STOR-X. Installation of your unit is set to fit your schedule. Whether you are looking to re-do your garage, laundry room, office, media room, mud room, pantry or any other room; a STOR-X system will take away the disorder and create a room that is both attractive and efficient. friendly, competent workers. I recommend Equinox without reservation,” says Yann Martel, author of Life of Pi. Equinox is committed to creating energy efficient homes that safeguard both the client’s investment and the environment. Care is taken to lower energy usage and costs by making certain that homes are well insulated and airtight, the appliances and lighting are energy efficient, and that the heating and cooling systems are the best available. Building a home that has a small ecological footprint is just one of the many ways in which the team at Equinox demonstrates that their relationship with and commitment to their clients does not end when the last nail is hammered. All of their renovations and new home builds come with a one-year warranty, and clients are included in the company’s post-construction program.

Equinox works on both major renovations and, in partnership with Etera Developments, on new homebuilding projects throughout the greater Saskatoon area. Warming Trends BY MEREDITH HERON

A

s the summer sun starts to fade, I pull out my riding boots and fall wardrobe and wish I had a fireplace to cozy up to. Living in a Victorian home built in 1856, I think it is criminal that my house is without an actual fireplace. As fall arrives each year, I mourn this missing architectural feature. However, there is hope. As a designer, I’ve watched new technologies regarding faux fireplaces come and go. I recall my grandparent’s electric fireplace: it was a log with a lightbulb that flickered to simulate flames, glowing orange and deep red where the

embers seemed to glow. So, you can imagine how I greeted the new electric fireplaces on the market: serious “side eye.” Year after year, I’ve watched them get better and better, and I have finally specified and had one installed for a client. “Doubting Thomas” no more! Our clients own a century home and contacted us after seeing on my Instagram feed some custom cabinetry we had designed for a narrow Victorian. I kid you not: Instagram is a great way to stalk designers like myself if you are so inclined (I’m @meredithheron). They wanted to recreate what I had achieved in my clients’

here. A simple warm “greige” on the ceiling and the contrast between the lead gray walls and ceiling isn’t so noticeable. The wall colour on the ceiling would have been too cave-like — not a good look. The contrast between matte wall paint and high-gloss lacquer adds depth without making the space feel narrow; in fact, it widens it all the more.

project in their own den, which is a former bedroom turned media/den. The room itself is tiny by den standards: 10-feet-by12-feet at most. The plan is to add built-in cabinetry to house an impressive book collection, along with holding audio visual equipment to allow for movie screenings. The clients are huge movie buffs, and the room is also to double as a screening room for their business which they need instead of renting a separate space. There was an existing former woodburning fireplace, but as soon as our contractors got into the room, they discovered it was near collapse, so it had to be carefully removed. We were initially on the fence about whether or not to replace the fireplace, but decided that the space needed it once we got the drawings put together. Our only choice was to go with an electric fireplace because we didn’t have the room to vent, nor did we want to grow the budget that much to suit. To make up for the small scale unit we needed to go with, we chose to design an elaborate mantle that would integrate into the rest of the millwork. I knew that I wanted a high-gloss lacquer finish, but my cabinet maker wasn’t so sure. A quick sample made up by the spray shop, and we were good to go. The secret to working with a small space is to reduce contrast where it counts. I find that if you have dark floors, opting for dark walls is a great way to expand the space. I don’t believe in cutting the wall colour in half or three-quarters and painting the ceiling that colour. If you are going to go with a very dark wall, then you should at least add a colour or a stronger neutral to the ceiling as you see we did

58

We chose to colour block the books on the shelves because the clients own many antique books that have colourful spines, but they’ve worn with age into a more mutable palette. We’ve mixed in family heirlooms which are both sentimental and a nice break from all books on the shelves. I love shopping from my clients’ own homes not only

because it is good for the budget, but because this is how we weave the story of the client throughout the space. This room could easily be recreated in a condo, so if you are downsizing, don’t think you have to downsize style, function and drama into your new space. There’s always room to build up and visually increase the space you have with a little creativity. Meredith Heron Design is a residential design firm that works on a variety of projects across North America including Western Canada. We are booking new projects for 2014. astside Paint and Wallpaper operates under the Benjamin Moore brand, one of most renowned names in home décor, not only in Saskatoon, but in all of North America. What sets them apart from other Saskatoon paint and wallpaper stores is that they are privately owned, and run by a staff that has over 100 years of combined experience between them. “We are paint and wallpaper people, that’s our forte,” says owner Ken Zurowski, who has been in the industry for 37 years, and has, in that time, learned almost everything there is to know about paint and wallpaper.

Eastside Paint and Wallpaper decorator Shannon Pethick also comes to customers with over 12 years of experience. Pethick’s main job is to assist customers in making the right choices for their personal space through home consultations. “It’s very important to have an objective, outside eye on your space,” says Pethick. “We’ve got a great group of people here who all have a really great eye for colour and design. I think our knowledge of colours, products and the wallpaper books is wonderful: somebody can come in and say, ‘Well, I’m looking for something that has this particular colour scheme in it, and I kind of want something that’s a bit more

contemporary,’ and we can pull six books off the top of our heads and say, ‘See if there is something in here that speaks to you,’ and then build on that to get them into a space they’re going to love.” While encouraging customers to trust the decorator’s expertise, Zurowski and Pethick also emphasize how important it is for their customers feel comfortable with what they are doing, especially when it comes to working within a budget. “Overall, most people who come in here are anxious for a change, [and] not everybody has an infinite budget. We can provide you with products that work with your budget, [and still] get the

look that you want,” says Pethick. She also notes that they will work with what is already in the home, and incorporate a colour pallet to successfully evoke the look and feel that the customer is striving for. These days, what many people seem to want is wallpaper. According to Zurowski, wallpaper has made a huge comeback, not only as an alternative to paint, but also as a way to frame a space, accent a wall, or screen a window to give a room a new look, while saving time and money. “It really is art for your wall,” adds Pethick. “Instead of being the background for the space, it’s the focal point. They’ve come so far with colours, textures and patterns . . . wallpaper is not your grandma’s wallpaper anymore.” With everything from alligator skin, pearl and lined textures, to linen, dimensional and flock fabrics, to damask and floral patterns, to vibrant and matt colours to traditional prints, Zurowski said he would be surprised if anybody else in the city had a larger selection then they do between the 250 wallpaper books in their two locations. For your next decorating project, visit their friendly, experienced staff regarding your own home consultation.

DISTRESSED, RECLAIMED AND REPURPOSED: Furniture with Character

I

nternational Furniture Wholesalers prides itself in offering a diverse range of furniture styles ranging from old world to ultra modern. In this issue, we would like to explore one of the styles that is very popular in the market today. Whether you call it distressed, repurposed or reclaimed, it is one of the most sought-after looks. Art paired with science has allowed the furniture industry to create a fusion that is often referred to as industrial design or modern industrial.

62

FineHomes

SASKATOON

Using distressed woods with “worn” metal frames, exposed nail heads, metal handles, wheels and hinges creates a distinct vintage factory feel that can really add an atmosphere to your home. Very few of us have a loft with exposed brick and concrete floors to set the tone for vintage décor, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add some industrial charm to your space. Any home can be brought to life with a few well chosen pieces such

as repurposed aircraft fuselage furniture or travel trunk style accessories. Modern industrial is not only about the wood and metal, although this is a big part of the look. The “software” used is as important as the “hardware” in this type of décor. A neutral colour palette created with linentype fabrics in colours like creams, grey and warm chocolates can help create a relaxed look. A distressed wood-framed chair is brought to life with soft fabrics in shades of blue or sage. Darker distressed leathers

with nail heads or tufting brings the past into the present. Repurposed barn board tables, old metal rails from the railway yards and casters mixed with more modern media — such as glass or granite — creates an earthy yet modern industrial feel. Part of the allure of this type of style is the easy living that goes along with it. When furniture is already distressed, you can truly enjoy using it. Marks on the table become memorable moments rather than unfortunate accidents. At IFW we work with a number of manufacturers that specialize in furniture that fits this style. By talking to a member of our team, we can assist you in finding the right pieces that reflect your personality and your space. When decorating with distressed, reclaimed or repurposed furnishings, International Furniture Wholesalers looks forward to helping you bring the best of this style to your home. My ultimate goal is to provide people with the proper products for their homes and lifestyles

ef Fowler had been working in the flooring industry for a quarter of a century when his father, retired police officer Murray Fowler, suggested they go into business together. One year later, joined by third generation Kyle Fowler, they are now the proud owners of Feature Flooring. The company offers customers professional installation, honest service and quality products for their residential, commercial and contracting needs. “My ultimate goal is to provide people with the proper products for their homes and lifestyles,” says Jef, who is not only the owner of Feature Flooring, but salesman, installer and deliveryman, as well. With 26 years of flooring experience, Jef installs a majority of the flooring himself, but also employs carefully selected qualified installers. Jef has also received professional training at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) where he tied the highest mark the school has ever had — which was a wonderful moment for Murray, the CEO of Feature Flooring, who believes in doing a job properly the first time. Embracing his father’s philosophy, Jef’s motto is: “Good enough is never good enough.” This is why he installs as many jobs as he can himself. “I know that I do a good job and the customer will be satisfied when I am done,” says Jef.

The staff and management at Feature Flooring pays attention to the quality they are providing customers, and offer extremely competitive pricing for the products they carry. They advise customers that buying on price alone is never wise, due to the fact that cheaper products are often less expensive because of the way in which they are manufactured and can contain inferior materials or recycled plastics that are prone to warping or shrinking over time. “You get what you pay for. People think it is all the same because it looks the same, but it is not,” says Jef. He says he doesn’t want to carry products that may cause problems for customers down the road — which can happen when you buy from stores that might carry discontinued or flawed stock that won’t be available later on, if additional flooring is needed. Feature Flooring offers a one-year warranty on labour. They are also willing to do everything necessary to rectify the situation, should issues arise with products that they sell. “We do not want to sell anything we would not install in our own homes,” says Jef. “Our ultimate goal is to make sure we have a happy customer at the end of the day. People may come across problems now and again, but it’s all about how you react to those problems when they arise.” Making customers happy is of the utmost importance to the Fowlers, who genuinely care about everyone who walks through their door, regardless of whether or not they are there to buy something that day. “I think people recognize that we’re an honest, family business,” Jef notes. “In 26 years I have never charged anyone more just because I thought they could afford it.

66

At Feature Flooring, we believe in making an honest dollar.” With a smile, Murray adds: “We’ve had customers who still come back to have a cup of coffee with us… and have offered their homes to us to show other customers our work.” The team focuses on making connections with people when they walk in the door. “I am a people person. I really enjoy meeting new people and helping them,” Jef explains. “Sometimes, we spend an hour or two talking to clients. [For example,] I had one client who was looking at area rugs, and while she was looking her husband and I got talking, when she wanted to go check out a few more stores he asked if she could go by herself so he could stay and chat.” With such warm, embracing constitutions, Murray and Jef are also willing to provide customers with the necessary tools to do their installations themselves. “We give free advice to anyone who comes in, whether they enlist in our services or not,” Jef explains. “We genuinely want to help people with their flooring. We want them to be happy, and if that means training them on how to install it, we’ll do that. I am in the store whenever I can be, and I always have my phone on so that I am available to answer any questions.” Jef is even willing to stop by to show customers how it’s done, so they feel more comfortable doing it themselves ― free of charge.

Good enough is never good enough

Feature Flooring in Saskatchewan. “When I saw this product, and how easy it is to install, I inquired about it. It turned out to be a Canadian company, and because we are the first store in Saskatchewan to carry it, they gave us the contract for the whole province,” said Murray. Murray is also in the process of engraving his police crest, name and rank onto a maple plaque to display on the wall, and hopes that once it’s finished he will be able to offer the same service to other officers. In recognition of their hard work, Feature Flooring offers a 10 per cent discount on materials to all officers, firefighters, military, emergency medical teams, ambulatory care and other necessary service workers whose work often goes under appreciated.

Discover Winning Window Coverings

P

opular interior design wisdom states that windows are among a home’s finest features, providing natural light and a sense of spaciousness. But how do you show those windows off to their best advantage? Without professional help, finding practical window treatments for your personal style can be challenging, but Budget Blinds carries something to suit each room and each family member. When it comes to window treatments, draperies are the ultimate. They can suggest the luxury of a royal estate, the charm of a country cottage, the dazzle of a Golden Age Hollywood penthouse. And, says Budget Blinds owner Kim Lang, their contemporary popularity has

skyrocketed. “Drapery is coming back in a huge way, adding colour, softness and function to rooms,” she says. Inspired Drapes, Budget Blinds’ recently introduced drapery collection, offers numerous stylish options that fit right in among established brands like their Signature Series. Arranging for a consultation with Budget Blinds is blissfully simple. “We offer complimentary in-home consultations,” says Lang. “They permit clients to work around their family’s busy schedule, making an informed selection on product and colour in their home. We work with the client to achieve a treatment that’s perfect for them.” That convenience benefits not just residential, but also

commercial, clients: “Both types of jobs require precision, selection and great customer service.” Once the perfect product has been discovered, Budget Blinds handles measurements and installation — frequently taking less than a month from start to finish. Choosing a truly “perfect” window treatment entails both aesthetic and practical considerations. If convenience is key, motorized models make controlling blinds a snap. If your home is a safe haven for little ones, Lang recommends perusing Budget Blinds’ cordless products. And those options are just the tip of the iceberg. “Recently,” Lang says, “We’ve done some fantastic drapery treatments, shutters and rollers, allowing

client to maintain their view while adding UV protection, heat control and privacy.” If you’re running the kind of high-energy household that requires a “security policy,” the Signature Series’ “No Questions Asked Product Warranty” can keep you covered for five years. “Some dogs chew blinds, some kids experiment with scissors away from the craft table,” laughs Lang. “Life happens, and the shades are covered with this warranty — once in each window.” Budget Blinds’ very name speaks to their remarkable prices. “We’re the largest window covering company in North America,” says Lang. “We have huge buying power, and a vendor alliance team

to negotiate additional warranties, selection and exclusive products. This purchasing power allows us to maintain great pricing without having to sacrifice quality.” Lang considers “getting to meet a variety of people, and assist them in achieving their goals” to be the highlights of her work, and that unstinting commitment to clients is reflected in Budget Blinds’ success. “After nearly seven years, we’ve built up significant referrals and repeat business, and great relationships with a number of home builders.” It’s a solid foundation for whatever’s coming next: “We’re excited to go to our national convention in mid-January, to find out what the latest and greatest is to offer our clients,” hints Lang. “Stay tuned!”

EXPERTAdvice Electronic Shades Offer Ease, Efficiency, Elegance Individuals investing in electronic shades need to choose a brand they can trust. At Stein Electric, we deal exclusively in Lutron shades. Lutron models boast dimmer switches and nearly silent motors; they’re also priced reasonably, merging luxury and value.

aybe you saw electronic shades in a show home; maybe in a friend’s living room. Wherever they’re placed, electronic shades are an elegant feature, combining appearance with practical function. Stein Electric began offering electronic shades last year, and client response has been unequivocal: they’re popular with every walk of life.

Electronic shades are simply window coverings which can be adjusted by hitting a button, eliminating old-fashioned pulley and crank mechanisms entirely. They’re available in the same variety you’d expect from conventional blinds, and don’t require extra care.

By visiting Stein Electric’s Millar Avenue showroom, you can compare different models and consult knowledgeable staff. We can find a shade perfect for any purposes, whether you’d like the blinds added to a heritage house or new condo, office or family home. In our experience, Lutron’s electronic roller shades are perhaps the biggest hit with customers. Many clients also wish to have blackout blinds installed in their bedroom. Lutron offers a range of other designs, too, including cellular shades, drapes, Venetian blinds, and more — all in numerous fabric colours and styles. If you’re working with a specific interior design scheme, or if you’ve fallen for one particular fabric, you’re welcome to provide Stein Electric with a fabric of your choice. We’ll use it to customcover your electronic shade(s). Our qualified staff can install your electronic shades directly into your home. Electronic shades may be installed in a single room, if you desire, or you can outfit your whole house or office with the technology. If you’d prefer a mix of electronic and conventional shades, we can style traditional models to match their electronic counterparts. From showroom, to installation, to showing off your new shades, arranging for electronic window coverings typically takes a total of one month to six weeks. The product itself is guaranteed for eight years. Electronic shades benefit everyone. Busy business people will appreciate the time

saved when they can skip closing each blind manually. Those with mobility challenges will recognize the convenience of hitting a single button to adjust all their home’s shades. Those conscious of their carbon footprint will never feel tempted to “flick a light switch” if they can allow abundant natural light into their home with the same amount of effort. In addition to electronic shades, Stein Electric offers numerous other home automation options, from security services to sound systems. Our electronic shades are easy to integrate into a broader automation system which can simultaneously lower your shades, adjust your lighting, turn on your radio and more. Paired with electronic shades, our “lighting control” systems are an especially attractive automation option. A combination of electronic shades and automated lighting control can help you minimize your energy output and maximize your home’s power efficiency and natural beauty.

Though in recent years brushed nickel was the “go to” choice for cabinet handles, Moxham says chrome is the current trend. LED lighting under cabinets is on many people’s musthave list, complemented by a glass mosaic backsplash. In general, customers at JGN Kitchen & Bath prefer a solid wood kitchen versus a veneer, with solid wood doors, finished panels and toe kick. While the most commonly chosen countertop is quartz, Moxham advises to prioritize choosing a colour you enjoy, whether it is quartz, granite or laminate, rather than specifying a material first.

t’s no surprise that kitchens are one of the most popular parts of the home for a high-end renovation. As the heart and hub of daily life, the kitchen is where people meet to share stories, laughter and whatever is simmering on the stove. The experience can be made even more enjoyable by updating your kitchen with luxury finishings, creating optimal function and design. Leon Moxham, owner of JGN Kitchen & Bath in Regina, says that current trends for a high-end kitchen include lightly stained cherry, alder or painted MDF — an engineered wood product that is denser than plywood — along with a raised panel inlay with glazing. “I am finding that people are picking oak as an accent, but stained in a dark colour like

Want to enhance the look of your island? Dress it up with corbels — decorative brackets that exude old-world elegance. Moxham says the island can also be used an accent, made with stained or painted MDF and finished with a countertop that matches the cabinetry. Another key accent is the addition of floating shelves. Aside from looking stylish, these help with storing commonly used appliances and other kitchen essentials, keeping countertops clutterfree. Other storage options include magic corners, pan drawers and spice pullouts. The best bang for your buck? Moxham says it’s getting what you want and living life well. “People are buying a lifetime kitchen or dream kitchen,” says Moxham. “They want the best for resale value and for themselves.”

can do wonders when it comes to selecting which products or systems will work best for your needs. Many people opt to convert a spare bedroom into a dressing room. This creates the ultimate walk-in dream closet: an entire space suited just for you. From the flooring to the colour on the walls, and the lighting to the finishings of cabinetry, a dream closet is possible. Your storage can be created using freestanding pieces, assembled according to your preferred layout, or built-ins designed and constructed to add value to the resale of your home. From a classic boutique feel to a modern space, your dream closet can be personalized in every way. Again, speaking with a professional maximizes the results that can be had. Creating nooks and storage space is their job; filling it with your belongings is yours. Don’t forget the little touches: mirrors to admire your reflection, a comfortable chair for strapping on your best heels, an ornate chandelier to make you feel like a princess in your own home. When a spare room is converted into a dream closet, this leaves additional space in your master bedroom. What are your options? An entertainment centre? A library? A cozy nook for your morning coffee?

Shoes aligned like pieces of art. Purses displayed in the prized collection they are. Clothing organized according to function, colour and season. Jewellery compartmentalized by purpose. Is it just a dream? Not too long ago it may have been. The idea of a walk-in closet was viewed as a luxury to have. Today, having a personalized storage space for your footwear, clothing and accessories can be had in any home. Many people fret over the space of a standard bedroom closet. True, trying to fit all of one’s items into a restricted

space can seem daunting. But with a bit of organization even a small space can be fully functional. Consider, first of all, purging items you no longer use or wear. This can seen challenging for some people, but keep in mind all of the extra room you will have for the things you do love and use frequently. A standard closet space can be updated with an organization system to keep your clothing and accessories in good order. Clutter X systems are also an affordable alternative to major renovations for those seeking more storage space. “In older homes, we have done many wall units, some reaching over 10 meters high.” There is a solution for every space, and clients receive all their storage options at their consultation.

Potential Clutter X clients range from families in large homes trying to keep several spaces tidy, to condo owners making the most of limited room. It’s a simple and convenient procedure; an email or phone call is all that’s required to bring Clutter X to your home or workspace. “Our consultation is free of charge and very casual so that all the customer’s needs are addressed,” says Dean. Both the Clutter X designer and the client are involved in the quote, ensuring customer input. In remote areas where an in-home consultation is not an option, customers can email measurements, and a design and quote is sent back to them. Luxury OF THE SPA EXPERIENCE, INNOVATIONS OF THE MODERN BATHROOM BY ERIN LEGG

t’s amazing how today’s technology makes life easier. We have smart phones that not only serve as communication devices but track every detail of our lives. We have refrigerators that manage our grocery inventory. We have automated systems that can turn lights on or off and shut our drapes at any point in time. Today’s bathroom is equally as luxurious and technologically advanced. Here are a few of the futuristic innovations available for your powder room: Bathtub: Perfect the art of the bubble bath with a tub that fills to your desired temperature. If you prefer showers over baths, opt for a shower head that rains at just the right pressure, or that plays your favourite music through its built-in audio system.

Steam Shower: Bring the spa right to your home with this luxurious enclosure. With seating, foot massagers, built in audio player and adjustable body sprayers, unwinding in your steam shower will be the most treasured part of your day. Toilet: If a self-cleaning toilet sounds too good to be true, it isn’t. In fact, your toilet upgrade can also come with automatic flush, automatic seat lift/lowering features and a heated seat. Faucet: Hands-free, intelligent faucets adjust water flow and temperature according to your personal preference. An added bonus? An intelligent faucet is a sanitary feature to any bathroom. Lighting: Whether it’s for your morning routine or your evening soak in the tub, having the correct lighting makes all the difference. Consider an automated system whereby you can select the

proper brightness or colour of lighting for your specific routine. Entertainment: A waterproof television set installed in the bathtub allows you to unwind with your favourite program or movie while soaking away the day’s stress. A specialized LCD television monitor can be installed behind a twoway mirror, allowing you to catch the morning news as you prepare for the day, but remains discretely unnoticed when powered off.

The bathroom is no longer about getting ready for the day or bathing: it’s about pampering yourself in a unique, customizable space. Inviting these technological innovations into your powder room makes for a luxurious, futuristic spa-like experience.

$4,000 and $7,000 – dramatically less than constructing one from scratch and so much easier to install. EAGO steam showers from Dynamic Bath & Shower come completely self-contained with stress-free, simple installation. They can be easily integrated into a new home build or even a renovation, as all steam shower panels will fit through existing standard doorways for ease of set up and installation. Additionally, a flexible drain connector is available that will meet any existing roughed-in plumbing. There is no extra expense for faucets, taps or shower heads; simply install and start enjoying immediately. Studies have shown that the use of steam showers can improve one’s health and wellbeing. Steam showers are beneficial to the respiratory system and immune system, removing harmful toxins from the body, providing relief from respiratory infections

and reducing the incidence of snoring. Using a steam shower after working out reduces the production of lactic acid, which stops sore muscles before they begin. Steam prevents skin from becoming dehydrated and itchy during the cold winter months. Deeply moisturizing, steam increases skin’s elasticity, reducing the appearance of age lines. “Essentially our steam showers are great showers with the ability to provide a wellness experience when you want one,” says Andy Reimer, sales and marketing representative for Dynamic Bath & Shower. Steam showers are great investments and raise the value of your home. EXPERTAdvice Q & A with Saskatoon’s Sleep Expert

With all the different types of mattresses out there, how do I know what to buy? I can try a mattress out in the store but that isn’t a good judgement compared to an eight-hour sleep!

Mark Stevens Wiseguys Mattresses 6 - 805 Circle Drive Saskatoon 306.652.1212 mstevens67@msn.com

True. You can rule out very quickly in the store the mattresses you don’t like, however mattresses that feel good in the store might not feel that good after a night’s sleep. Always make sure you have a 30 to 60 day sleep satisfaction on your purchase so you can exchange it if it is not working out. Always give a new mattress a 30-day trial period for your body to adjust to the new pressures and the foams to break in. It is important to understand that with a quality mattress, you should never have to buy anything extra to have sleep satisfaction.

Which is better for my back: memory foam or the standard coil mattress?

E

very day I help people with one of the most important purchases they’ll make: their mattress. Buying a mattress is not rocket science: it all comes down to comfort, comfort, comfort . . . and durability. Nobody knows the best comfort for you other than you. Here are some of the most common questions I get asked, and the answers I give to help the decision making process.

88

FineHomes

SASKATOON

Everybody has different needs for mattress in terms of support and comfort. Always buy a mattress solely on your personal comfort. If everybody had the same needs, I would have just one mattress in the middle of the store and sell different sizes.

What kind of mattress would you recommend for someone who has had back surgery? The first type I would recommend is a foam or pocket coil mattress, because they are a pressure-relieving type of system.

As always, though, only purchase what is comfortable to you.

How often should you replace your mattress? I have heard every eight years, but my mattress has a 25-year warranty. The best time to replace a mattress is when it is no longer comfortable for you. A mattress will last you on average eight to 10 years. A warranty covers defects in a bed, and a bed wearing out is not a warranty issue. Anything past a 15-year non-prorated warranty on a mattress is simply a selling ploy.

What are some of the things to look at when buying a mattress for a toddler? I recommend going with the least amount of foam that you can get away with, and stay away from memory foam, if possible. All foam is petroleum (yes, even soy and latex foams), and memory foams and cheaper foams are the worst for chemicals. Remember, toddlers weigh very little, so what feels soft to you might feel firm to them. Speaking from personal experience, make sure the mattress is comfortable for you as well, because chances are you will fall asleep on it after reading a bedtime story. A good night’s sleep is just a visit away. If you have more questions about the right mattress for you, come down to our new expanded showroom at 6 - 805 Circle Drive and speak with me in person.

EXPERTAdvice Why Should You Hire a Professional Photographer?

Consideration

Understanding of Lighting

A professional photographer will spend time getting to know their subject(s). They bring the wisdom, skill and ability to capture images in a style you will love. Whether photojournalistic or traditional, a professional photographer works with your needs and will help you achieve your dream of having amazing pictures to look at.

A professional photographer understands and knows how to capture natural looking images in any kind of light. Whether in the studio, outdoors or low light situations, a professional photographer knows how to add the right amount of direct, bounce or supplemental lighting to fill the scene, compliment the subject and maintain a natural looking image.

ypically when we make a purchase of any kind we always consider the “value” we receive and the “importance” of the product. It’s not really any different when hiring a professional photographer. Here is a little bit of insight into the value and importance of hiring a professional photographer to capture your precious memories and milestones.

A professional photographer brings many creative ideas forth. Not only do we focus on the subject but also make sure the background, the composition, the lighting and the depth of field is in proper form. A professional photographer will have an artistic visualization and the ability to see images that you might not be able to comprehend. They really are genuine artists.

Custom Printing

Top of the Line Equipment & Tools

A professional photographer focuses (no pun intended) on capturing high quality images and the goal thereafter is to preserve these images with high quality print material, products & framing. Professional photographers will not only present a beautiful product but will make sure you are happy with the end results.

A professional photographer uses the latest digital SLR equipment and, most importantly, knows how to use it. Today’s professional equipment has multiple and complex functions that allow a photographer to manipulate focal length, shutter speed, aperture and depth of field to compliment almost any subject. A professional photographer will utilize high end post processing software such as Photoshop that allows him or her to effectively correct color, adjust exposure, manipulate hue, saturation, lens distortion and edit images for a professional look.

These are just a few ways professional photographers bring value to the table. We can make funny faces like nobody’s business, but while it does cost more to hire a professional photographer versus Uncle Larry with a digital camera, a professional photographer brings far greater value and quality to the end product. A professional photographer with years of experience will bring you one-of-a-kind images you’ll be proud to display and share in your home for years to come.

Houseplants

FOR THE

Winter Months BY KEN BEATTIE

S

ettling down for a long winter’s nap may be the way of many as our days shorten and temperatures plummet. Our gardens remain as digital memories now under snow or, at the very least, not looking their best. At this time of the year, I rely on my houseplants to satisfy that “green thumb itch.”

AFRICAN MASK ALOCASIA AMAZONICA

Naturally there are many excursions to the local garden centres, all of which are four-season establishments bulging with not only a great selection of living material, but abounding with household and lifestyle accoutrements. A neverending supply of floral and greenery can also be found at the “box stores”; unfortunately the care and maintenance typically is not the best. What I suggest is spending a little bit more and get good quality and well-maintained houseplants. Given that our homes supply less than desirable growing conditions during the winter months — drier air and low light — be diligent in what you select. Humidity is the biggest problem by far. I know many of you say that you have humidification with your heating system, and that’s grand; however, in order to supply humidity sufficient for most tropical plants, the wallpaper would be peeling off the walls.

GLOXINIA SINNIGIA SPECIOSA

Rather than stress your system, it’s much wiser to group your plants together so that they may enjoy collective humidity. Another idea is to prepare a “pebble tray” which is simply a saucer filled with stones that will hold water. Place your houseplants on the stones so that they are not in the water yet will benefit from evaporation. Maintain water in your tray

at all times and you will be pleasantly surprised how your plants react. Misting the foliage is often suggested as a method of increasing humidity and it may work to a degree. I for one just don’t find the time to be misting as often as is required to benefit the plants. A plant that tolerates lower light and typical house conditions that you might consider is African mask, Alocasia amazonica. This tropical beauty has outstanding foliage with very distinct markings. African mask belongs to a family that includes some poisonous relatives and this one is no exception if ingested. If your pets are foliage “munchers,” this is not a great plant for you. Flowers are rather non-descript and sporadic, but the foliage makes up for this by far. Gloxinia, Sinnigia speciosa, is a delightful, bulbous plant belonging to the African violet family. These fuzzy-leafed plants will bloom profusely during the later winter months in hues from deep crimson to mauve and through to white. Once you have a gloxinia, you will or should always have it because they are bulbs that re-grow annually indoors. A great aunt of mine used to water her plants with cold tea, and I have yet to see gloxinias with as spectacular flowers as hers had. Consider these and other houseplants to help you through the darker seasons as you leaf through the seed catalogues; they will help to encourage you along. EXPERTAdvice Windshield Repair

not hold up in the event of a collision, which could result in tragedy. Your windshield does three things to help protect you in the event of an accident: 1. It prevents you from being ejected from the vehicle. 2. It supports the passenger side airbag when it deploys. 3. It helps stops the roof from crushing in during a rollover.

Jason Pingert Glass Doctor 101-2834 Millar Avenue Saskatoon 306.477.4527 www.glassdoctor.com |

A damaged or improperly installed windshield may not be able to perform the above criteria during a collision because it no longer has its original strength, and can crack further or even pop right out of the vehicle if it has not been installed properly.

Installation Safety

Y

our windshield does more than keep out the wind and rain. It also gives you a clear view of the road and protects you and your loved ones in the event of an accident. There are many reasons to have your damaged windshield replaced. Although maintaining the aesthetics of your vehicle and avoiding a ticket are good reasons, the biggest motivator should be safety.

Structural Safety What people may not realize is that the windshield plays an integral role in the structural integrity of your vehicle. Besides the fact that cracks and chips can be distracting while driving and impede your vision, damaged windshields may

I would strongly encourage people to make sure that their windshields are being installed properly by a qualified professional. Some of the questions you should always ask when having a windshield replaced are: • Are you following the car maker’s specifications and using OEM (original equipment manufacturer) quality glass and adhesives? • What type of adhesive are you using? They should be automotive urethane not butyl or silicones. • What is the safe drive away time? This is the length of time after installation the urethane needs to cure before it is safe for you to take your vehicle out onto the road. Safe drive times can vary depending on the quality of urethane being used. For example, the

urethanes that we use at Glass Doctor have a one-hour safe drive time, while other urethanes can have safe drive times up to 24 hours. • Are your technicians certified and trained on the products and tools they use? Improper removal and preparation can result in damage to the body or paint that is no longer visible when the windshield has been replaced, but can rust over time.

Insurance and Warranty It is always a good idea to evaluate whether or not additional glass insurance is right for you and your particular vehicle. Windshields can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,200 installed. My recommendation is for people to find out how much their windshield costs to replace, and compare that to the cost of their glass insurance over two to three years, which is the approximate length of time before most windshields will need to be replaced. In most cases glass coverage will likely save you money in the long run. We can also process your SGI claims for you without you having to contact SGI or your insurance broker. Another way to insure yourself is to find out what kind of warranty you are getting on your repairs. For example, at Glass Doctor we offer a lifetime warranty on the installation against leaks or defects and a one year breakage guarantee on the glass. This means we will repair any chips for one full year after installation, and if a chip cannot be repaired we will replace the windshield, glass only, for no additional cost.

fall or winter rush. But making sure the furnace is up to snuff is not all one should do. Getting your home’s air ducts cleaned is also a crucial step in ensuring ideal air quality. If you haven’t had your home’s furnace ducts cleaned by a certified professional in the past five years or so, or if you have pets or a dusty or unpleasant

odour when your furnace comes on, it is advisable to consider getting your ducts cleaned by a professional. The most effective way to clean air ducts and a ventilation system is by having the contractor place the system under negative pressure through the use of a specialized truck-mounted vacuum.

As to how often they should be cleaned really depends on the individual household; under normal circumstances, every two to three years is advised. However, if you or someone in your home has allergies you may want to consider having the ducts serviced more often. A comprehensive cleaning of all heating and cooling system components (furnace fan blower, furnace heat exchange, air conditioning coil, humidifier and ducts) will also help air circulation. If you have recently had or are having your furnace upgraded to a more efficient heating system, you should have your heating ducts cleaned, and of course after any type of renovation that has caused a lot of dust (for example, from drywall, plaster or wood cutting projects). Be sure to allot three to four hours of time for the duct cleaners to do the job. Mention any other items that could require cleaning as well, such as your air conditioner coil or dryer vent. Now that the ducts have been cleaned, maintaining cleaner indoor air can be attained by using full-time air purification equipment such as an HRV (heat recovery ventilator) or highefficiency air filtration (hybrid systems). An HRV allows fresh air to enter while exhausting an equal amount of stale air and recovering the heat or cool from the exhaust side and using it to warm or cool fresher air coming in. Air is filtered before being redistributed in the house. Also now available are energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), which return not only heat energy, but moisture to help humidify the home if required. If you suffer from allergies or asthma you can add a HEPA (hybrid) filtration system to the HRV and have fresh, clean air. While you are having your ducts cleaned I would suggest also having your dryer venting cleaned as well. By maintaining clean dryer venting you reduce the risk of fire, save money on energy costs and prolong the life of your dryer. Good air quality in your home is something that will not only make you feel good, but will also make your home environment comfortable for family members with allergies and sensitivities to dust or other airborne particles. jobs and a multitude of environmental factors with which to contend, including wind, rain and excessive sunlight. (Indeed, spring is the worst possible season for applying stucco because the frequent wetness delays projects and increases the possibility of mould.) Jobs that had not been completed by snowfall were left waiting until the following spring, often resulting in exposure to moisture and the build-up of mould. The result of these hasty applications and projects left sitting unfinished over the winter is costly repairs and renovations, something which AL-RO Acrylic Stucco has been doing a lot of in recent years. As owner, I noticed when AL-RO first opened for business nine years ago that the current method of restricting stucco application to the warmer months of the year had many drawbacks that increased the potential for poor workmanship and the need for repairs and renovations in the future. These raised the cost of owning a home or a business unnecessarily — as did the prolonged

construction period. Finally, the need for contractors to lay off their employees during the winter months meant that many companies had a labour force of mostly inexperienced workers, thereby lowering the quality of their work. To circumvent these issues and create a team of experienced employees, AL-RO began to purchase scaffolding, tarps and heaters. This not only enabled us to do stuccoing during the many long months of winter, but also enabled us to control our climate and environment in a way not possible in the summer, resulting in a higher-quality product. Clients appreciate the savings and the results. Today, we have enough winter work to keep our staff of over 60 experienced employees busy. Indeed, AL-RO does a greater square footage of stuccoing during the winter than in the summer. Experience is the key to providing a long-lasting, good-looking quality product. Stuccoing has changed a lot over the years. It was once comprised

of housing paper, galvanized wire, a scratch coat and a finishing coat of sand and cement. Then, in the 1940s, Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) was developed in Europe, one which greatly increased energy efficiency. In the 1970s, this system was introduced to North America for use mostly on commercial properties. Finally, true EIFS was brought to Saskatoon by AL-RO nine years ago. EIFS consists of several component layers. It is engineered, manufactured and installed as a system. It is not stucco. First, a liquid moisture and air barrier is applied, rather than the stapled housewrap paper previously used. This can also be applied as a vapour barrier, if needed. Next comes a layer of styrofoam insulation. Mechanical fasteners are no longer used; a special adhesive is employed to ensure that the building is securely enveloped and protected. A geometrically-designed cavity is left to allow for any drainage needs resulting from inclement weather or the dew point related moisture. Two polymer modified

base coats follow with a layer of fibreglass mesh in between them. These polymer modified base coats are both crack resistant and durable. Depending on the type of base coat used, some are also rated as non-combustible. Finally, there are two layers of acrylic top coats: a brush coat and an architectural coating. Both acrylic layers can be tinted to the owner’s exact specifications. At AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. in Saskatoon, we have a range of over 1.5 million colours and shades from which customers can choose. While it is possible to apply these tinted acrylic layers on top of existing conventional stucco, it is not recommended. The lower layers of the wall should first be examined to ensure that they are not in need of repair. This system of exterior cladding should only be applied by workers trained according with EIFS Council of Canada guidelines, instructions and specifications. In Saskatchewan, there are only two QAP (Quality Assurance Program) certified Level 4 EIFS mechanics by EFIS Council

of Canada, and they are both with AL-RO. The EIFS Council of Canada is a national third party regulatory body that oversees the development, maintenance of standards, training and licensing involved with this premier form of cladding. The only QAP certified EIFS applicator company in Saskatchewan is also AL-RO Acrylic Stucco. Like EIFS, doing stucco or plaster work is a craft. Stuccoing and plastering are skills that have been proudly passed on from father to son in Europe for many generations. A good stucco craftsman creates durable works of art that are pleasing to the eye, easy on the pocketbook and of sound, durable construction. To ensure that your home or business is guaranteed to get these results, you need to hire an experienced certified company with a long, strong history of innovative thinking. ALRo Acrylic Stucco Ltd., the firm that introduced winter stuccoing and the Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems to Saskatchewan, is just such a company.

The Art of Hosting BY SARAH VERMETTE

W

hile cleaning out my grandparents’ basement recently, my family and I found a spool of 8mm film from several decades ago. We watched in delight, as children and adults danced around a cramped house in flared skirts and suits. It all seemed so very fancy and out of reach. Indeed, the way people congregate and the sense of community has changed drastically in the last few decades as we have become prone to embracing our casual comfort zones. By re-introducing some simple habits we can rediscover the art of hosting and have a greater

100

sense of pride in welcoming people into our homes.

Greeting guests Take jackets at the door. If you have a small number of guests, hang their coats in the closet instead of leaving it to them to find a place. Don’t assume they’ll be comfortable opening your closet to find a hanger. If you have a lot of guests, store coats on a bed. It can be fun for guests to search for their coat at the end of the night on a bed piled high with them.

Thank your guests for coming and encourage them to make themselves at home. Lead them to the kitchen, living room or wherever you have decided to congregate.

Attention to attire It can be nice to give people the opportunity to get out of their blue jeans and play dress-up. It doesn’t have to be the holiday season, when they are more common, for a fancy dress party. Hosting a fancy dress Valentine’s Day party can be fun for couples and singles — it can

take the pressure off people who have trouble coming up with romantic ideas for their partners and give single friends a chance to get out of the house. Or, throw a fancy dress party just for the sake of throwing one!

Cocktails and canapés In Saskatchewan, beer is popular. But, BYOB can be done on whim and often. For something a little more special, print out some cocktail recipes and set up a section of your kitchen counter as the bar. While it’s only necessary to choose a handful of drinks, be sure to have a healthy variety, as well as something unexpected that people aren’t likely to have tried. Mixing drinks is fun for everyone, so take turns playing bartender. Make the drink for the first person who arrives, they can make the drink for the next guest, and so on. Keep in mind that most guests don’t like to come empty handed, so make a list of what you need for the bar and ask each guest to pick up one item.

—TAKE TURNS—

playing bartender

Just as women benefit from the company of other women, so do men benefit from the company of other men, however, they are less likely to have that on a regular basis. Encourage the branching off of your male guests by buying a box of cigars and allowing a room or garage to act as the smoke room. Setting up a snack table can serve a number of functions. People like to eat so they will naturally gravitate to the food, and this can serve as a way for guests to introduce themselves to each other in a way that’s more comfortable than simply walking across a room to someone new. No one likes to be hungry and setting out food will show guests that you have taken the time to care for them and make sure they are comfortable.

—SEAT PEOPLE—

in creative & thoughtful ways

Polished place settings For dinner parties, set everyone up with a cocktail as they arrive. Dress up your place settings with placemats, cloth napkins and name cards. If you don’t have dishware dedicated for special events, you can dress up your everyday dishes by using a large colourful plate as the base for each dish. Seat people in creative and thoughtful ways. Instead of seating couples beside each other who are with each other often, set each person beside someone with whom they have something in common or use your instinct as to who

102

would hit it off. If you have a shy guest, seat them beside someone outgoing who has the gift of gab and will make them feel comfortable.

Enticing entertainment Planned activities can break the ice and carry a party long into the night. It can become tiresome or tedious to depend purely on conversation for entertainment. Think outside of the box — a room full of people learning the fox trot and other dance steps is sure to be filled with laughter and smiles. Fancy dress parties will set the tone for dancing. If you have creative guests or children in attendance,

setting up a craft table can be fun and will allow everyone to leave with something.

Relax and have fun When it comes to hosting, no one has ever been frowned upon for going the extra mile. Guests will appreciate that you took the time to make the evening special. After all, when people attend a party or gathering they are giving the gift of their time, so giving your time to make it special is a great way to say thank you. Wishing everyone happy hosting in the New Year!

EXPERTAdvice Shopping Tips For Your New Space

Chantelle Butterfield Funktional Space 306.227.3008 chantelle@funktionalspace.com www.funktionalspace.com |

Whether or not you’re a fan of shopping, enlisting the help of a decorator can make your shopping trip truly pay off.

Keep the Big Things Neutral

This is essential to help you remember everything you need to get. For the Gyugs’ new space, “We got a lamp, some vases,” Tracy notes. A list can also help you from purchasing things you don’t need. “Chantelle works with any budget and makes it look great without spending lots of money.”

You all know I am about making things look great with a practical approach. I am a firm believer in having “exquisite” jewellery (or the “fluff and baubles”) while maintaining a simplistic, yet everso-chic, neutral outfit (or the “big items” in a room). What this does is allow your space to evolve and change easily and affordably throughout time; it’s easier to change out a few lamps and paintings rather than start all over with a new sofa.

elieve it or not, there are some people out there who dislike shopping. I know, I know… as impossible as that sounds, this is something I’ve encountered many times during my career. There are also people out there who love shopping. Regardless of which type you are, I have the shopping aspect of home decorating down to a science. Let’s take a look at Tracy and Scott Gyug’s recent project and review some basic shopping tips. I’ve worked with the Gyugs on previous projects. The most recent was creating a vignette for their new home. Now, Tracy admits she loves shopping. But we still employed a few basics for the project.

Make a List

There is nothing that can ruin a space easier than items that are too small or too large for the room. Always measure allowable space, and when you’re out shopping take a measuring tape! Tracy says, “Chantelle is able to use scale to create a whole look for a room. I highly recommend her for her ideas.”

Furniture: Plan, Plan, Plan “Chantelle knows what works. She looks around your house for character and picks up on what you like,” explains Tracy. For this particular project, the planning process involved utilizing already-owned items the Gyugs love. From our previous projects together, we purchased a curio cabinet that worked well in the new space. So part of our process was to incorporate this piece of existing furniture into the vignette.

Be as Efficient as Possible Tracy laughs, “I like shopping. Chantelle is good at it, and involves me with all the decisions! She has the intent right from the beginning to make your home for you.” When I shop with clients for items for their new space, I don’t dwell on the fact that they may not like something I pick out. We move onto finding an item that works for them. So whether or not you’re a fan of shopping, enlisting the help of a decorator can make your shopping trip truly pay off. As Tracy notes, “At the end of the day, Chantelle makes it easy to go home to a place you love.”
