SHUT THE
FRONT DOOR An Eye-Catching Entrance to Your Home By Erin Legg

O
ne of the most important elements of a home’s curb appeal is the visual impact of the front door. This is the where the “welcome” extended to friends and family begins, and where homeowners can truly make a design statement. Choosing a style of door is a big decision. Most importantly, homeowners should select a front door that matches the architectural style of the home. Here are some popular house styles and the corresponding door styles that complement the design genre. Vi c to r i a n : The appreciation homeowners have for this style lies
in its ornate decorative touches. The architectural detail found in the scrollwork, trusses and arches resonate a luxurious vibe, and the style of door is no different. Often, Victorian houses have panelled doors with window insets, and are usually a dark, elegant colour. Either a single or a double door entrance is well suited, given the space. Modern: These minimalist, sleek homes are designed with a “less is more” philosophy. Known for simplicity (not to be confused with “boring”), doors tend to be a slab style, which may or may not be accented with window panels. Glass is often used throughout the interior of this contemporary design, so we sometimes

see entire glass doors on modern houses. Colonial: This European-inspired home, known for its geometric symmetry, typically features raised-panel wood doors. The doors themselves are either a natural wood finish, or painted to add a pop of colour. Narrow sidelights and transom windows work well with this style of home, and all trims are decorative. Bungalow: Homeowners are naturally drawn to the cosiness that comes from a bungalow, and the door is the first invitation to come on in. Typically, doors are flat panelled with simple casings. Depending on the exterior style of the home, the door can be painted or left as a wood finish. Glass, quite common in bungalow doors, is rectangular in shape. While the aesthetic function of your front door is to make a good first impression to your guests, its practical function is to withstand natural elements. Between the sun, wind, rain, snow and extreme temperature fluctuations, we demand a lot from our doors. Wood is a material known for its beauty and versatility. For doors to be left with a natural wood appearance, oak, cherry

maple, walnut or mahogany are the top choices. Paintable wood doors are best made from softer woods, such as pine or hemlock. Solid wood doors are exquisite additions for your home, though they demand upkeep to ensure natural expansion and contraction don’t do damage. An option some homeowners take advantage of is wood veneered doors that are less susceptible to warping. The durability of steel makes it a top choice for homeowners. However, don’t classify this material as too drab for your front door. Best when painted, steel doors will not warp, crack or twist over time. They have a higher R-value than wood doors because of the insulting foam in their core. Steel doors are also available in high-end finishes, such as a stainable, laminated wood veneer. Aluminium is another hardy material for your front door, as it has a baked-on finish that will never rust or require repainting. If you want the wood look but are steering clear of a true wood product, opt for a fibreglass door. It can be easily replicated to look like real wood, although it will need re-staining every few years. Bold, vibrant colours give style and elicit a “welcome” to visitors. While individuality
and artistic expression should be practised, there are basic guidelines to keep in mind when choosing a colour for your front door. When faced with narrowing down your top colour choices, opt for a complementary colour that plays off your home’s exterior. Another easy option is to select a natural shade, as they tend to go with almost every colour imaginable. When truly stuck for a colour inspiration, pick up a hue you’ve already established in the yard or with front porch accessories. Never underestimate the power of accessories. Symmetrical placements, such as lighting or potted plants, go well with any architectural style. Don’t shy away from embellishments or mouldings: these can be added strategically to update a door. If you prefer more artistic additions, why not consider custom ironwork that still allows light to enter the door’s window, but adds an extra layer of security as well? If there is no porch or covering of your entranceway, your door can be accented with a pergola (best with a bungalow) or even a copper canopy (against a classic brick Colonial).

veryone dreams of owning a brand new home designed exactly to meet their needs and tastes. Unfortunately, for many people this dream is not all they hoped it would be during the building process. After undergoing just such an experience, Nathan and Kim Stobbe of Saskatoon created Haven Builders Inc. to provide new home builders with shelter from the otherwise potentially stormy world of home building. “A haven is defined as a place of safety or refuge. The word conjures up an image of a place that is relaxing; a place you want to be,” explain Carla and Justin, clients of Haven Builders. “What we have found is that not only has Haven Builders Inc. created a place of relaxation for us, but also that they themselves are a Haven among builders. Our construction experience has been nothing short of joyous!” The haven Team Author Izaak Walton once wrote, “Good company on a journey makes the way seem shorter.” This is what Haven Builders strives to do. They assist their clients through the process of creating
and owning their dream home in such a way that clients not only enjoy the journey, but they enjoy the destination even more because the journey there was such a pleasure. “At Haven, our desire is for you to not only love your home when it is completed, but to love the design and building process that got you there,” says owner Nathan Stobbe. “That is why we created our Signature Service.” At Haven Builders, the Stobbes have brought together a great team of passionate, approachable and highly skilled people to help make your home building experience a pleasure from conception to completion. At Haven, everyone — staff members, clients, subcontractors and suppliers — is treated with the greatest of respect. As Carla and Justin testify, “The Haven Team consists of people who are courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful. This not only includes their staff, but the subcontractors they have chosen to employ.” CommuniCaTion is Key The journey to your dream home by Haven begins with a series of meetings designed to help the Haven team get to know you and to understand exactly what

the utmost importance. This is why they created a separate division, Haven Cabinets, which is entirely devoted to creating customized cabinets for the discerning dreamers.
Throughout the project, the client, subcontractors and builder all have access to Haven’s Buildertrend online project management system. This system allows everyone to track the progress being made and to see when work is scheduled to occur. This organized and structured system greatly reduces the stress involved in building a new home. As Haven clients Heidi and Clayton explain, “Haven’s Buildertrend software made reviewing drafts, approving costs, and communicating simple. The calendar feature is ideal because it let us know how things were progressing, and how close we were to the ever important move in date.”
Haven knows that only the best will do for their clients and that is what Haven Cabinets provides. Only available to people building a Haven home, Haven Cabinets are solidly constructed with full backs, plant-on ends and soft close doors and drawers. Haven Cabinets are available in any size or shape and an extensive array of styles. They also have a huge selection of accessories from which to choose.

Maintaining Your Foundation Investment Through the Seasons
Dean Geransky owner Precision Foundations Warman 306.249.5665 precisionfoundations@sasktel.net
O
nce you have found the right contractors and built your dream home, or have climbed the real estate ladder to find that perfect space, it is important to maintain your investment. The foundation is one of the most important components to your home, though many people don’t give it a second thought until there is a problem. Over the last two decades as a foundation expert I have seen it all, and regardless of the type of home you live in, seasonal maintenance is important both inside and out.
FOUNDATION In the spring, many people are surprised by a basement leak, which can arise even without a crack in the foundation, leading to costly interior finish repairs. Though concrete seems dense, it is porous and repeated saturations can soften it over time. This is why it is important to get a waterproofing membrane added to a foundation during the building process. Repairing a single crack in the basement can cost $1,000 or more; it is well worth the investment to buy a secondary layer of protection for your home. Another challenge presented by the weather is snow thaw, which creates puddles around a foundation when a property is not properly graded. In colder temperatures the foundation’s weeping tile is frozen until late in the spring, severely limiting the drainage of the melting snow. This is why it is important to move snow back from the foundation at least four feet in the spring so it doesn’t drain into the basement; water will always choose the path of least resistance. Precision Foundations offers both snow removal and grading services to avoid these costly problems. GARAGE AND EXTERIOR HARD SURFACES It is important to maintain all your concrete surfaces in the winter.
Homeowners often forget about their garage surfaces. During our harshest season, vehicles are sprayed with water, ice and salt — all which end up on the garage floor. Without treatment this runoff can severely damage concrete floors, resulting in bubbling and flaking. The best way to prevent this issue is a good cleaning. Sweep and then mop, using a 10 per cent vinegar and water solution. The more salt build up, the more vinegar needed. Not only will the garage look cleaner, the vinegar neutralizes the salt, keeping it from doing any damage. When spring finally comes, give the space one final mop and pressure wash it to ensure its longevity. People often spread salt and sand to combat icy walkways in the winter, but this contributes to a continuous system of freezing and thawing that can seriously damage walkway and driveway surfaces. The best way to avoid this issue is by using a naturally derived floor dry product that will absorb water as it thaws, while providing improved traction. When it comes to the care and maintenance of your concrete surfaces no question is too big or small. Consult the professionals at Precision Foundations for all your concrete, demolition and grading needs.

Concrete Insulation System: Your Basement Insulation Solution and cost-saving basement insulation system for our Canadian climates. Its concrete insulation system (CIS) meets and exceeds current local and national building code requirements for residential concrete basements. ith the winter season, heating our home comfortably and efficiently has its challenges. This time of year we turn our attention to basement insulation and development. Typical basement insulation construction has remained unchanged for 50 years or more and currently uses the same method of wood stud, batt insulation, poly and drywall. It doesn’t always pay to use the industry standard method. A MORE EFFICIENT CHOICE QuikTherm, a Canadian company and manufacturer based in Winnipeg, has developed an efficient, healthy

CIS includes insulation, framing, air, vapour, and radon barrier with the benefit of a polymer reflective facing, an all-inone assembly. CIS consists of pre-made styrofoam corners, studs and panels with a tongue and groove fit and finish. Using styrofoam provides the absence of thermal breaks, and a concrete wall without thermal breaks has a highlyeffective insulation value. The threeinch thick panels have an effective wall assembly of R-25.5, versus a typical batt wall of R-20 with a 15.8 factor. This continuous insulation creates a 60 per cent higher insulation value that equates to a warmer basement, higher comfort levels and a cost saving to heat. FEATURES OF AN INNOVATIVE INSULATION Using a closed-cell styrofoam insulation system has many benefits to the homeowner. CIS will not absorb moisture, is flood resistant and is inorganic. This means mold and mildew will not thrive in your home, allowing for a healthy indoor living environment for you and your family. Insulation R-values remain constant with this insulation system during the lifetime of the home. This manufacturer has a transferrable warranty from homeowner
to homeowner — an industry first in below-grade insulation. Other important features are: no formaldehyde, no offgassing and no glass fibres. CIS uses up to 15 per cent recycled styrofoam in its manufacturing process. DIY, RENOVATOR OR NEW HOMEBUILDER? CIS can be installed by a homeowner, renovator or new homebuilder. The system is user-friendly, and easier to install than wood framing; typical installation is 40 per cent quicker than standard methods currently used. This insulation system comes as a kit for your specific concrete basement shape and height, and includes: eight, nine or 10-ft. panels with corners, studs, and all styrofoam and anchors required for attachment to the concrete wall. I invite homeowners, renovators or new homebuilders to view this innovative basement insulation system and our other insulation solutions for the home in our show room.

uying or selling a home is one of the most exciting — and let’s face it, stressful — times. There is a lot of pressure on you to make the best decisions for your situation, often within what feels like short, constricting deadlines. The best resource you can access to make the process easier is a professional realtor. When selling, hire an agent adept With online marketing One of the most rewarding decisions you can make when selling your home is to work with a real
estate agent who has a strong online presence and exceptional online marketing skills. Research suggests that nine out of 10 people actively searching to buy a home will begin their search online. A realtor savvy with online marketing will list your property on his or her website, through MLS® and social media, with wide-spread reach of the target market. He or she will know how to write compelling descriptions of your home to attract potential buyers. Additionally, you want to work with a realtor who understands how important attractive photography is for effectively marketing your house. Don’t accept shoddy photography of your home — poor lighting,
systems and give you a detailed account of its current state. A report is provided that includes a list of potential repairs and estimated costs. Your realtor will know how to use this home inspection as a negotiation tool as part of the conditions of sale. A real estate lawyer protects your legal rights during one of the largest financial transactions you’ll complete. While the details may be overwhelming, and sometimes frustrating, your real estate lawyer translates the negotiations and processes easily for you to understand. Specifically, your lawyer will review thoroughly the contract and preserve you interests in the process, ensures the title to the property is free from any financial claims held against the seller, and ensure each document is signed and registered to ensure ownership. A well-connected realtor will give you his or her top recommendation for your legal representation.

In fact, having less than six images available decreases the chance a viewer will see the property in person by 50 per cent. Your realtor will have a professional photographer capture high-quality images that showcase the best qualities of your home and attract buyers from day one. When buying, use your agent’s recommendations for professional consultation Approximately 90 per cent of Canadian homebuyers utilize the services of professional home inspectors. While it is not mandatory, it is one of the best decisions you can make in the home buying process. How to Save Money on Your Mortgage

A
re you in the market for your first home or just looking to upgrade? Chances are, you’ll need a mortgage. A mortgage is a large, long-term commitment and you want to make sure you choose a mortgage that’s right for you. No matter where you are in the home-buying process, it’s important to know that by making the right choices when selecting your mortgage you can save thousands of dollars, both now and in the long term. Here are some tips that will help you pick the mortgage that’s right for you:
30

SASKATOON
Amortization: Your amortization period is the time it takes to pay back the principal and interest on your mortgage. This can be as long as 25 years — and sometimes longer. Choosing a shorter amortization may increase your payments slightly, but can save you a significant amount of interest so you can be mortgage-free faster. Repayment: Know your options and ensure the repayment structure works for your lifestyle. Committing to a structured or blended repayment, rather than interest only, will save you interest by ensuring you stick to the plan of paying down your mortgage principle. Accelerated repayment: Review your household budget and consider increasing or accelerating your mortgage payments. Requesting an accelerated weekly or biweekly payment schedule will pay down your mortgage much faster and can dramatically reduce your interest costs over the life of the mortgage. Prepayment: Ensure your mortgage has the option for making adequate prepayments, which will allow you to pay off your mortgage as you wish. Choose carefully between a “closed” and “open” mortgage. An open mortgage will provide you the flexibility to pay down the debt without
any restrictions or penalty, but that flexibility may come at a higher cost. A closed mortgage can often provide the best interest rate, but prepayment may be limited. Plan for unexpected expenses: Under certain circumstances, some institutions will allow you to skip your mortgage payments if you’re experiencing financial hardship. However, these skipped payments extend the life of the mortgage and therefore increase your interest costs. Instead, establish a savings plan for unexpected expenses and you’ll avoid the costs associated with skipping a payment. Early renewal: While interest rates have remained remarkably low recently, there’s always the potential for rates to go up. Take advantage of today’s low rates and avoid the stress of what rates will be when your mortgage renews by renewing your mortgage early. Even if your mortgage doesn’t renew for years, you may be able to extend your remaining term to take advantage of today’s low rates. For more information, contact Hilary Maughan, one of Affinity Credit Union’s Mobile Mortgage Specialists at 306.260.3931. Hillary will go through all of your options at a place and time that’s convenient for you!

Buying & Selling Your Home Made Simple with REALTOR®

hen deciding on a REALTOR® to help you find the perfect place or to sell your current home, choosing someone who will be honest throughout the process is essential. For Connie McKee, a REALTOR® for over 11 years who has helped hundreds of clients buy and sell their homes, honesty is the foundation of her success. “I shoot from the hip,” says Connie. “I believe I will be more truthful than most.” Prior to becoming a REALTOR®, Connie was a hairstylist for 18 years. The salon she owned in Regina was located next to a real estate company, so Connie got to know the agents well. When the time came for a career change, she felt that real estate would be an excellent fit. “I seem to be someone who people just talk to,” says Connie. “I also strive to make the buying and selling process as easy and enjoyable as possible, having the best interests of my client at heart. I’m not afraid to work hard to help them find the perfect place to call home. Or, as the seller’s agent, get the best possible value for their home.” As part of a small team at locally owned Inovex Realty Saskatoon, Connie is able

to offer more options on their listing commission than most other local agents, while providing all the same services. Connie often can charge a one per cent listing fee with a buyer’s brokerage fee to be negotiated (some restrictions apply and not intended to solicit any already listed properties). This allows clients to receive help from a professional at a reasonable cost. Licensed to sell everything from commercial and residential properties to acreages and land, Connie works with a broad range of clients, many of whom have referred her to their family and friends. Connie has access to a large network of industry professionals, from lawyers to mortgage brokers to home inspectors and all types of trades’ people. She is not in it just for the sale and money, she is in it to find the best home for you.” “Connie’s knowledge of tradesmen in the area and places to shop was awesome,” says Michele Alberts. “She was absolutely wonderful, and got us into our new home in such a timely manner. I loved that she made an effort to meet at places that were easily accessible to me, because of my disability. It was one of the simplest transactions I’ve ever made.” “It’s about making people happy and finding the perfect place to call home or allowing them to move onto the next chapter in their life, wherever it may take them,” says Connie.
“There is no other REALTOR® I would ever use in Saskatoon,” says Daniel Boulton, who has worked with Connie on multiple sales. “Connie is extremely knowledgeable about the city, properties, home inspectors and where to find

f your home is your castle, your castle’s walls must not only exude style and warmth, but also be a reflection of your personality. Don’t know how to get started? We spoke with some industry professionals for their take on finding the perfect hue. “Paint can have a huge visual impact on any space,” says Jen Sutherland, interior designer and owner of Jen Storey designs. “It can clean up a space and transform the overall feeling, including changing the perception of its size.”
36
FineHomes
SASKATOON
Making design waves right now are shades of grey, turquoise, white and black, says Sutherland. Accent walls and simple colour blocking are also at the top of many homeowners’ design wish lists. But are these colours and trends right for you? “I feel people should make a home their own and consider if a trend fits their lifestyle before using it,” says the design expert. Are you considering painting your ceilings? Sometimes it can work beautifully. “If your room is attic-like, I usually suggest painting it all the same
tone,” she recommends, adding that small powder rooms may also improve with painted ceilings. “I love to make dramatic ceilings in small spaces. It really depends on the ceiling height and scale of the space, as well as the angles of the walls. In general, I say the ceilings can be more fun than flat white!” When it comes to transitioning paint colours from room-to-room, colours should be complementary. “It’s essential the colours you use throughout a house should transition smoothly,” explains Sutherland.
Don’t forget the importance of lighting when it comes to your paint colour, either, adds Sutherland. “Lighting is super important and will change from room to room and house to house. Don’t select the same colour a friend has chosen. It may look like a completely different colour in your home due to natural and artificial lighting.” Sutherland suggests painting a white Bristol board and moving it around the space to see how it may adapt. Be sure to make note of how the colour changes throughout the day and night. If your home features special architectural details like mouldings, now is your chance to let these features shine. “If a home has gorgeous architectural details I want to see them as a feature,” says Sutherland. “Older homes can exhibit the most amazing historical details. I suggest keeping them in a soft white
tone. However, if you want such details to recede in a space and blend, you would consider painting them the wall tone.” If you’re feeling creative, you may wish to showcase your painting prowess by making use of non-traditional forms of paint, such as chalk paint, for your furniture. Developed in England by Annie Sloan in 1990, it is called “chalk paint” because of its texture. “While it is primarily used to paint furniture, walls can also be painted with it,” says Elizabeth Harvey, owner of The Melon Patch. “The beauty of chalk paint is that it can go on any surface — including metal, plastic and wood — without priming or sanding.” It can also be used for floors, she says. “Painting small details with chalk paint will give your home its own personality and make it truly one-of-a-kind.”
“If you use a neutral palette, your accent tone should be seen throughout each level of your home.” Creating unity, she says, will open up your space. The biggest mistake many homeowners make? Choosing colour based only on a small store sample. “It is very tricky to look at a small sample and envision the room complete,” explains Sutherland. “The painted room will appear much more intense than a small chip. Choose the tone wisely and ask a professional for advice if unsure.”

here is nothing quite like the warmth and ambience of a fireplace. It becomes a natural focal point and the heart of the home. Unlike its traditional wood burning counterparts, the modern radiant gas fireplace combines efficiency and aesthetics, making the fireplace at home in any room, from living rooms to luxurious master bedrooms. With nearly two decades of experience in providing Saskatchewan with heating and ventilation systems, Bridlewood Home Products Ltd. is the go-to business to find fireplace experts. Relocating to a new showroom in February, Bridlewood will have the space to display more products, including fireplaces, outdoor heaters for patios and

radiant garage heaters. The new space will be a must see for clients, new and old. “We pride ourselves on being able to provide the best products and service to our clients,” says John Christenson, owner. “Our new location will be the perfect space to help customers, educating them so they can make the right choices for their home, sense of style and lifestyle.” As the foremost dealer of Valor Radiant Gas Fireplaces, Bridlewood provides the province with 125 years of Valor engineering and expertise in each product. These Canadian produced gas fireplaces are so effective they can serve as the sole heating source in cabins and cottages, avoiding unsightly ductwork and costly renovations. In addition, they
are an excellent source of backup heat for your home. Radiant gas fireplaces provide precise control, changing the temperature as little as a degree or two, with or without power. Thanks to their efficient design, Valor gas fireplaces are the perfect solution for zone heating high traffic areas in a home, maintaining a comfortable heat while reducing costs. Another Canadian product featured in the new showroom will be the Superior Radiant Garage Heater. The system is ceiling mounted to direct radiant heat downward to the floor, heating it and the rest of the room to provide a comfortable temperature. These radiant systems reduce the cost of operation and repairs.
“We are very pleased with the Valor radiant gas fireplace we purchased at Bridlewood. It is beautiful, runs well and has really made a great difference in the warmth of our house. We love getting up in the morning, turning it on and enjoying its warmth from fall to spring,” says client, Patrick Lapointe.

With a large supply of items in stock, Bridlewood can swiftly install and repair systems for their clients and are only just a phone call away. “I was very impressed with the young man who came out to do our estimate. He was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. He walked me through what I could expect and even invited me to come down to the showroom to make sure I would be happy with what my radiant product would look like and what radiant heat would feel like. Now I can sit back and enjoy,” says client, Debra Wright. With a crew dedicated to making homeowners’ fireplace and heating dreams come true, there is no time like the present to call Bridlewood for the fireplace that combines artistry, efficiency and precision into one unique and stylish package. Sleek metal tiles look great behind stainless steel appliances, and because they are durable and easy to clean work well by the range too. Use glass tiles throughout the house. or centuries the kitchen has been considered the heart of a home, so it is no surprise that in 2015 the kitchen will reinvent itself. As the walls fall in the modern home, kitchen designers and cabinet makers are finding new ways to make the space more userfriendly and avant-garde. 2015 promises to be a year of extremes with the family kitchen taking centre stage. With the open concept living that homeowners have become accustomed to there is an increased need for a kitchen to be the showpiece of a home. With the loss of valuable wall space, lower cabinets now feature intelligent storage solutions that follow the mentality of “a place for everything and everything in its place.” The avid baker might consider integrated storage, like a stand mixer lift which removes the need to lug the heavy machine around or take up valuable counter space. Slide-outs and racks inside cabinets maximize every inch of space, and drawers find new meaning with inserts that function as the ultimate knife block. An open concept kitchen challenges cabinets to be something more than a simple box mounted to a wall, but a transformer of sorts. The desire for openness and airiness has lead to a new trend called the “invisible kitchen”: a room that isn’t necessarily discernible as a kitchen at first sight. In the invisible kitchen floor-to-ceiling seamless
storage takes hidden appliances to the extreme. Some invisible kitchens feature cabinetry that completely mirror the finish and trim on surrounding walls to create a flawless look. The keys to these disappearing acts are cohesive wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling finishes. The kitchen island mimics a piece of furniture and the large statement piece features prominently. The masterful kitchen island is a component that is striking in any kitchen and can even offer a completely self-contained kitchen within its confines more than making up for the lost space in the open concept kitchen. On trend finishes for 2015 include reflective surfaces like floor-to-ceiling glass, mirrors, high-gloss paints, enamels and even metallic cabinets, creating a sense of greater space by amplifying the light in the room. Contrast is key in the modern kitchen. Designers are combining matte paint and finishes with reflective and high gloss elements to great effect. Whether your personal style calls for a monochromatic statement or Pantone’s latest colour of the year, it is texture and finish that really complete a kitchen’s look. Kitchen enthusiasts are demanding a new type of kitchen and as a result the industry has been called on to make the space look like a work of art. Now that cooking is no longer considered a chore, people are embracing the social interconnectivity of cooking together and the open concept kitchen.

Life Between the Sheets By Brandi Parnell
After a long day of mental exhaustion, physical performance or life in the proverbial “rat race,” there are few things as satisfying as pulling back the sheets and crawling into your own bed. Fine linens can make for a perfect night’s sleep. Consider these criteria when purchasing a new set of sheets.

The bed has become a place of luxury to me! I would not exchange it for all the thrones in the world.
Thread Count:
—Napoleon Bonaparte
Myth or Fact?
T
hread count is often referred to when it comes to buying bedding. However, the term has become a marketing tool to sell more sheets on discount websites. While it is important to know the number of threads woven per square inch of fabric, the quality of material is equally important. More threads of a poor quality fabric may result in a durable, but not so desirable, set of sheets. Sheets with between 200 and 600 thread count are optimal; anything higher traps body heat and can make for an uncomfortably hot night. Thread count is definitely something to consider, but so too is the fabric. Material Make Up The average person sleeps away about one third of their life; that’s quite an investment. So, too, should be the sheets you sleep on. Smooth, soft sheets may lull you into a sweet slumber sooner than a scratchy set of bargain bedding. Following are five fabrics for a fantastic night’s sleep: 1. Cotton sheets have definitely withstood the test of time because they are easy to care for and comfortable, regardless the climate or season. Egyptian cotton is the crème de la crème of cotton sheets, soft and luxurious to the touch. 2. Pima Cotton or Supima, as it is sometimes referred to, is sought because it is grown in America (named after the Pima Indians) and is superior quality. 3. Bamboo is a great alternative because the plant can flourish without pesticides or fertilizers, making it an environmentally-friendly option.
Although bamboo is not ideal for people who tend to be warm, these sheets are easy to care for and incredibly soft to the touch. 4. Silk is historically lavish for a superb sleep, but has a reputation for being best suited to colder months. Silk sheets are a high-end alternative to flannel and require delicate laundering. 5. Lastly, linen sheets may be the perfect complement to silk. Linen is best used in warm climates and on hot summer nights. A true luxury fibre linen requires more care than most other fabrics, and often requires ironing. If
treated properly though, these sheets will last forever — or until you choose to trade them in. Maintenance To extend the longevity of a great pair of sheets, wash them weekly. Dryer balls can soften your sheets without applying harmful chemicals. Be creative, add essential oils to your wash or purchase your favourite scented linen spray. The editor’s preference is lavender linen spray available at Tiber River Naturals. When life is too hectic or the day is too long, take solace between a great pair of sheets. Sweet dreams.

The Top Mattress Myths

1. A firmer mattress is better. Often people purchase a firmer mattress in hopes of getting better back support. The truth is that the best mattress for your back is the one that feels the best to you. All mattresses provide pressure relief in the top portion of the mattress and back support in the

more than simply the amount of coils. The coils do not make the difference. Characteristics such as type, gauge and tempering are far more critical and important. High coil count alone in no way means you have a better bed and should not have a huge impact on your purchase decision.
3. Silk, cashmere and wool make a bed more comfortable. When used on a
ach person is unique and has different considerations when choosing the right mattress. There are a lot of assumptions people have about mattress selection. As a sleep expert, here are a few myths I’d like to clarify:

mattress, only small amounts of these materials are in the upper padding. This only makes a bed more expensive. When you cover your mattress with a pad and sheets, you do not directly feel the surface anyway.
4. Stores sell the same mattress under different names. Retailers often claim that a particular mattress they sell is comparable to a competitor’s mattress. Though you may find beds that are alike, most “comparables” have little in common. They may look exactly the same on the outside, but will likely have different amounts and grades of foam. Unless it is the same manufacturer
and the bed has the same name at both locations, there will be a difference.
5. I save a lot of money when mattresses are 50% off. Be wary of retailers with frequent half price sales. It can be a tell-tale sign that they have regularly inflated prices. These sales only give you the illusion that you are saving big.
6. A better quality mattress costs more. Firstly, the fifth piece of advice above debunks this myth. Secondly, price differences can reflect the price of the foam. Foams with higher grades and densities cost more. Yet, expensive foam does not necessarily mean more comfort. Again, purchase what you find comfortable, not what is more expensive.
7. Salespeople are always objective. In a perfect world this would be true. However, manufacturers offer financial incentives known as SPIFs (sales person incentive funds) to push various brands and models. Always keep in mind that only you can know what is best for you. If nothing else remember these simple rules: The only thing that matters in a mattress is comfort and durability. Nobody knows what is right for you, except you. Everybody has different comfort levels. Let your body tell you what is right.

est known for his pearly white smile, honest advice and occasional antics as the host of HGTV’s popular Income Property, Scott McGillivray has built an empire from the ground up. Aside from hosting and producing the longrunning program, McGillivray balances being a family man with a career as a successful business owner, author and educator. But take away his international recognition and would it matter? No. Family is his first and foremost commitment. “Not a day goes by that I don’t acknowledge that becoming a father is the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” states McGillivray. McGillivray married Sabrina in 2008, and since have become parents to two daughters, Myah, three and Layla, 18 months. “Having children is the most amazing thing that’s ever happened in my life. It’s changed my life completely.” McGillivray dedicates everything he can to his family, and that involves strict fashioning of his career and public life. “My primary focus is family and everything else has to work around it. We set up some work rules [and made] hard decisions, but they’ve been the right decisions. I’ve had to turn down opportunities, but I have to be able to just come home and be a dad sometimes.” Although McGillivray easily gushes about his wife and children, he remains modest about himself in the spotlight. Recently, People named him “Sexy Man of the Week,” which he finds humorous. “It’s probably the most awkward thing that’s ever happened to me. My wife [and] my friends thought it was hilarious. No one takes it too seriously, especially me.” At the age of 19, McGillivray was advised: “Life is too short to learn from your own mistakes.” He elaborates, “You’ve got to learn from other people. Lots of people have trouble listening and asking the right questions to people who have already done what they want to do.” Income Property is just one vehicle by which McGillivray educates homeowners on smart investing and renovations. Armed with more than 150 of his own income properties across North America and his B. Comm (Honours), he partnered with longtime friend, Michael Sarracini, and founded the Lifetime Wealth Academy, providing crucial real estate advice and education to want-to-be investors. “Teaching other people is something I always gravitated towards and I was naturally giving real estate and reno advice to my friends and family anyway,” he explains. “I feel my best when people can take something away from the show or a live event. I love hearing when people have learned something or have been inspired to buy a property or take on a renovation because of me. That’s the most rewarding.” In 2015, McGillivray will continue educating homeowners using his knowledge and expertise in real estate as a regular contributor to Fine Lifestyles and Fine Homes magazines. “It’s going to be a good year!” he says with his trademark smile. home is the greatest personal investment a person will make in their lifetime. Due to economic and cultural shifts, the reality of homeownership has changed. People no longer buy their forever home as soon as they get married or move out of their parents’ house. Getting a dream home is now a process; homeowners need to be savvier about how they renovate and decorate because resale is now a way of life. Keep It SImple Whether purchasing a new home or renovating an existing one, there are investments that always yield a high return. Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most used and sellable rooms in a home. In fact, these rooms can literally make or break a deal. When it comes to items with expensive price tags — like tile, flooring and cabinets — it’s better to be safe than sorry. Though a person might love boldly patterned Moorish tiles or ultra-modern cabinets in Pantone’s latest colour, these daring choices will not only become quickly dated, but will limit resale, as well. It is always best to go with simple finishes that appeal to a variety of styles. Instead, add personality to your home with the use of paint, furniture and art. An energy-effIcIent Home One trend that will never go out of style is making a home more efficient and ecofriendly. From solar power and heating to grey water recycling and added insulation, upgrading a home not only helps save the environment, but money as well. Creating an eco-friendly home doesn’t necessarily mean a total home overhaul to
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. It can be as simple as choosing sustainable flooring options like bamboo or cork and replacing a dated thermostat with a more precise digital one. When living in an older home, replacing windows, adding insulation and upgrading heating systems won’t completely change the look of a home, but will instantly add value and savings for years to come. AddIng SquAre footAge Increasing a home’s square footage through a basement or attic conversion is a surefire way to maximize the value of a home. After all, very few people complain about having too much space. By converting an attic into a luxurious master suite, homeowners get an oasis all to themselves and can tailor the space to their needs. Meanwhile, a basement renovation can create the perfect playroom or the ultimate area for friends and family to gather. StAndIng tHe teSt of tIme While trends come and go, many modern choices — like natural stone countertops, stainless steel appliances, simple cabinetry, large windows, hardwood floors and subway tiles — can withstand the test of time. All of these choices can be dressed up or down, depending whether your style is sleek and modern or old farmhouse charm. The key to creating that perfect home — whatever stage of the property ladder you are on — is longevity. Think not only about your home’s future, but yours as well.

How to Choose a Qualified Contractor

t’s that time of year when Saskatoon homeowners are searching for contractors for this spring’s home improvements. 3 ‘N 1 Construction is a general contracting company in good standing with both the Saskatoon Home Builders’ Association and the exclusive Trusted Saskatoon. As owner, it is my job to advise homeowners how to choose a qualified and accountable contractor by getting quotes and asking questions. When I meet with homeowners wanting to make an informed choice on roofing, I answer all of their questions, including
66

everything from underlayments and shingle brands to vents. Homeowners Rod and Sandy Hollinger say 3 ‘N 1 Construction gave them a good quote for their roofing job, but what won their business was the fact that we provided them with three quotes, each with different options. “Some of [Eade’s] suggestions were things we hadn’t heard of or considered, and were really great ideas,” says Rod Hollinger. CHoose a Qualified ContraCtor During a boom economy like the one Saskatoon is experiencing, it’s important to make sure the contractor you hire is licensed and insured, and not a fly-by-night operator. Check the contractor’s standing with the city or ask to see his/her credentials. Then call on the contractor’s references for confidence and peace of mind. Make Your ContraCtor aCCountable If you’re dealing with a legitimate contractor, they will want to have a signed contract that includes the quoted price, materials and deadlines for the job. This contract protects both the client and the contractor. Research the contractor with organizations such as Trusted Saskatoon, which requires its members to provide
the service and quality promised, complete the job on time, charge the price quoted with no surprises and communicate honestly and responsively to customer needs. Trusted Saskatoon investigates members that violate these guarantees and randomly shops its members annually to test their integrity. ProduCt oPtions The most important question for a contractor to consider when meeting with a homeowner is why the roof needs to be replaced. The homeowner’s budget and needs must both be met, and it is the homeowner’s responsibility not to choose a contractor based on the lowest price. You don’t want the contractor who is working to pay off the last job. Putting down new shingles without addressing venting and other concerns is not enough, either. It is a contractor’s job to research products, look at alternatives and keep up with evolving building codes. If the roof has no pre-existing issues, 3 ‘N 1 Construction can provide good, better and best products as options like any industry. If a homeowner does due diligence by qualifying and making the contractor accountable, both parties are set for a win-win situation.
Keeping Plants Healthy During Winter By Ken A. Beattie, NPD, Ph.D.
T
his may be a surprise, but plastic used to wrap plants at store is not an insulator. Poly actually transmits cold much faster than many other materials,
so it is odd that house and holiday plants are wrapped up for cold weather transport in plastic. Paper wrapping is by far superior, and can be as simple as newsprint or a brown conical sleeve offered at better garden centres and plant stores.
Once new houseplants are in the home, a number of situations should be considered, the least of which is temperature. It may be freezing outside, but toasty warm Canadian homes provide appropriate conditions for tropical plants. One of the worst things you can do is place a plant near a heat source such as a forced air register or fireplace. Holiday plants often succumb to the blasts of forced, warm furnace air, withering away from excessive heat. As an example,
FineHomes

will become active in the late days of winter as the sun increases in strength. Frozen soil doesn’t thaw until well into the spring, however the foliage continues to function despite moisture being unavailable. This “desiccation” is why some foliage burns or turns a brownish-red colour, often referred to as “winter kill.” Indoor dry heat during the winter months produces ideal conditions for many insects on houseplants. Spider mites are one of the most common pests that thrive in dry heat. This presents a great clue for predicting infestations, as well as
place Poinsettias in good light, but not near a heat source; they are particularly sensitive to cold drafts as well. Outdoors, evergreen shrubs are often blanketed with burlap and various wrappings for the winter. Burlap or a similar fabric is used not as an insulator from the cold, but as a sunblock. A-frame structures are also common housing for evergreen shrubs, with additional burlap often covering the end openings. In areas of the country where ice and/or wet snow are familiar, these structures are ideal. Never resort to plastic; the plants actually warm up when the sun shines through the poly, throwing dormancy into a tail spin. Plastic also conducts the cold very effectively, which you do not want. The purpose of covering is simply to provide protection from the winter sun. Evergreens

aggressively controlling and preventing a disaster. Humidity is the worst enemy of these mites because they cannot breed in high humidity. But what is high humidity anyway? Immediate vicinity humidity is more important than overall household humidity. Many references indicate misting your plants is a reasonable way to increase immediate humidity, however you could be kept busy trying to accomplish decent humid conditions. A method that works well is to place your plants in a pebble tray constantly filled with water. To avoid saturation, an island is created using an overturned saucer or similar material. The water surrounding the pebbles and the plant evaporates at a rate dependant on the immediate vicinity humidity, and as a result, the plant is quite satisfied. This microclimate is an excellent deterrent for spider mites in particular, and your uninfected houseplants will flourish. Many houseplants and gift plants attempt to produce new growth indoors, however it is usually not substantial. Low-light conditions cause the growth to be rather stringy and weak with lighter colouration. The distance between leaves (the internode) lengthens and foliage is often smaller and lacks lustre. One reaction to this insipid growth is to jump to the fertilizer container and up the dose just a tad for good luck. That is perhaps the worst thing you can do! Winter growth, if fertilized at regular strength, is perfectly poised for fungal problems and a myriad of other nasty bits of business. Plants grown in the popular “soil-less mixesâ€? require minimal feeding during slow growth periods; about 50 per cent ratio is often recommend and at a rate less than half of what is customary. Naturally, there are exceptions, and growing under artificial or supplementary light is one of those exceptions. May your plants remain healthy this winter!
