Swinging for Fashion

Vonita Jordaan owner Nicole Mendelman director of product management MyGolfCloset.com Edmonton 1.844.414.GOLF (4653) info@mygolfcloset.com

T

his spring, Jordaan and Mendelman launched MyGolfCloset.com, an online store providing a wide range of ladies’ golf wear to women in Edmonton, Alberta and across Canada. FL: How long have you been golfing? VJ: I’ve been golfing for about 15 years; I co-own Long Shotz Driving Range in Sherwood Park. NM: I’m a professional golfer who played on the European tour and in the LPGA Open in Edmonton. I’ve been around golf and golfers my whole life.

FL What kind of ladies’ golf wear are you offering?

I need to have on the golf course. We chose lines based on that functionality.

VJ: Whether you’re looking for fashionable golf clothing for a size 2 or a size 22, MyGolfCloset.com will have something flattering for you. We have golf skorts, dresses, shorts, pants, polos, sleeveless polos and rainwear from a range of high-end brands. These include Chervo, Cross, J. Lindeburg, EP Pro, Daily Sports, and Galvin Green. A number of these brands are only carried in the pro shops of private golf clubs, which not everyone has access to. Those that do shop in private clubs will not be able to find the range of sizes and stock in each brand that we carry. We want to make fashionable, quality golf wear accessible to every woman.

FL Who are your favourite golf style icons?

FL: What do you look for in golf wear? VJ: I’m a real woman with curves, so the most important aspect for me is styles that flatter. A great fabric with stretch and strategic pocket placements can do wonders. For example, Daily Sports has a collection of “Miracle Pro Stretch” bottoms. They literally can make you look a size smaller. I have every style of bottom they make. NM: For me, one of the biggest things is functionality. If I’m going to wear a golf dress, it must have built-in shorts and it must have a back pocket in just the right place for gloves and tees and everything

STYLE

NM: I’ve always admired Babe Zaharias, one of golf’s leading ladies from the early 1940s. I also love the photos of Marilyn Monroe golfing at Banff Springs showing her wearing a long skirt and golf sweater. I like to look different on the course and I like to wear a traditional look. A couple of lines we carry are classic looking with a new age, or European, styling. FL What are the upcoming fashion trends for ladies’ golf wear? NM: Pink will be a really big colour this year, as will a mix of pastels and hot neon colours. You can already see golfer Michelle Wie wearing a lot of these. If you need some style ideas, you will find complete outfit suggestions on our website. FL: How would you define a great piece of golf wear? VJ: A great piece can go from the course to cocktails, or from work to the golf course. If you’re on a budget, invest in a good quality bottom in a neutral colour, like black, you can wear for many seasons on and off the course. Then buy a few lower priced tops in the season’s trend colours. MyGolfCloset.com

CHRISTIAN LoubouTIN Engaging All The Senses

WITH ST Christian Louboutin has garnered the distinction of being a fashion icon after only a mere two decades as an industry brand. Known the world over for their trademarked red sole, the footwear has become synonymous with style and sex appeal, introducing a splash of sensual colour to even the most modest looking heel.

TYLE By Trina Annand

A

s a boy growing up in Paris, Louboutin discovered a love of heels quite by accident while visiting the Museum of African Art. A 1950’s sign that banned sharp-heeled shoes from the space immediately struck the inquisitive child. Louboutin was enchanted by the shoe style, a strict contrast to the 1970s trend for chunky heels or flats and began drawing his own designs in that style. The designer started his career working with performers and dancers, and then moving into shoe design. It wasn’t until 1992 that Louboutin had a dedicated shop for his footwear. Now Christian Louboutin stores dot the globe, bringing the theatricality of the designer’s shoes to women and men around the world. Designed in Paris, made by hand in Italy and inspired by the world, Louboutin’s women’s shoes are not made for comfort — they are made for beauty. In an interview with Charlie Rose, the designer said, “My shoes change a woman’s body language, they are transformational, they slow you down. They are not for running, if you run through life you’ll end up seeing nothing.” Best known for his signature stilettos the artisan has branched into men’s shoes as well. Men, who traditionally wore the same style for decades, are now more open to style and trying something other than the standard black loafer. The signature red sole of Louboutin’s came to him in the embodiment of a red nail polish, an added flourish created on a prototype by the designer. Louboutin has extended his signature style to accessories, including a selection of nail lacquers, which of course are available in a signature moody colour palette called Louboutin Rouge. For those looking for an extra touch of glamour, you can find limited edition sets covered with hand-applied Strass crystals. It’s the

perfect selection for a Louboutin manicure with a peek-a-boo red highlight. The signature design element of the bottle harkens back to the designer’s passion for shoes with an eightinch tall tapered lid, the same height as his skyhigh Louboutin Ballerina Ultima shoe. Though Louboutin’s signature look is not new to the fashion world, it certainly inspired it. The trend of red heels and soles can be traced back to Louis XIV who used the colour to denote his glamour and royalty, passing an edict that only nobility could wear them.

heryl and Christy live and work in the communities of Terwillegar and Magrath. With a one-minute commute from home to work, they truly are neighbours in life and business. Their boutique shops, Swish Flowers Inc. and Refinery Clothing Co., are a stone’s throw from one another in the Shoppes of Terwillegar Gardens. Christy and Sheryl first met when Christy began supporting Swish Flowers as a customer. The two became fast friends and their friendship eventually led Christy to work with the Swish Flowers team. After spending the days together, the two quickly discovered a shared work philosophy and mutual respect. “A lot of what goes into opening your own store and diving into the world of small business is scary, but Sheryl made it look seamless,” explains Christy, owner

incredibly special,” Sheryl says. “I love what I do and look forward to coming into my stores each and every day.”

Swish Flowers is a boutique flower and gift shop that makes the world a more beautiful place, one arrangement at a time. Sheryl opened her shop in 2004, filling a void in a community known for a love of fine things.

Swish stores feature carefully curated giftware that isn’t available in other local stores. The shop endeavours to stir all five senses and provide an escape from the daily hustle and bustle of life. Swish recently launched a custom gift box line; each box is a carefully crafted gift, which includes fresh flowers and hand selected products.

At Swish, Sheryl and her team create gorgeous custom floral designs carefully edited to create an individualized look to suit any occasion. Paying careful attention to the placement of every bloom, the team at Swish can make an ordinary flower look extraordinary.

Swish’s signature balloons are fun and whimsical. Each balloon is filled with glitter, feathers and sequins to create a magical, sparkling effect; these balloons are the perfect addition to add a enchanted element to your next party or special function.

“There really is no reason to leave the T6R!” - Christy Stevenson The idea for her store first came to Sheryl when she lived in England. Working across the street from a flower shop, she fell in love with the lifestyle. Taken with the idea of being able to walk home with a baguette and fresh cut flowers, she started working in the flower industry when she returned to Canada. When she felt she had learned enough and with encouragement from her entrepreneurial husband, she decided to open her own store. The original Swish Flowers boutique has excelled during the past 11 years. Sheryl recently opened another location to bring her shop’s particular charm to Sherwood Park. In addition, Swish also has an online store where customers can order gift and home products conveniently from home. styLiNg for each geNeratioN: a boutique for everyoNe Christy worked at Swish during a transitional time in her life after years of travelling throughout the United States and Europe for her husband Grant Stevenson’s hockey career, eventually settling into married life in Edmonton. At the time she didn’t know what she wanted to do, but the boutique setting inspired her while travelling the world and became a reality while working at Swish. When an opportunity presented itself to open a store in the same strip as Swish, Christy seized it. Refinery Clothing Co. is a contemporary women and children’s clothing shop that also sells jewelry and giftware. Refinery showcases emerging and well-known designers from around the world. Always on top of the latest trends, Refinery is often the first Albertan or Canadian store to land accounts with new companies like Freshly Picked Moccasins or Rails, a women’s clothing line. We all want to feel excited and proud of our purchases.” Refinery carries everything from urban children’s lines such as Beau Loves to a more classic look, like Mommy and Me. With a talent for making customers feel at ease, Christy effortlessly helps people discover and define their own sense of style. “The majority of my customers are mothers with young children like myself,” she says. “I truly enjoy getting to know my customers, their families and their unique tastes.” At the heart of her store is family: a supportive husband and two young children who inspire. “I would never have been able to do this without my

Sheryl and Christy not only serve their community, but they make an effort to support it. “I really try to support our four corners,” Sheryl says. “My hair stylist owns Blue Gemini, I attend spin classes at Infinite Fitness (not as many as I would like), and I support Vines Wine Merchants, Prairie Mill Bakery and Hillaby’s.” A few of their favourites just a short drive away include Bliss Yoga Spa, XIX, and Fresh and Co. ne might think Larissa Love and Holly Hawryschuk were born to shop. They co-own Kid’s Stuff Etc. & My Favorite Aunt’s, a popular Edmonton consignment boutique specializing in quality, name brand clothing for children and women, as well as footwear, accessories and home decor.

Eight years ago, the two friends bought the store from their mothers, Diane Gibbs and Lynne Holland. Gibbs and Holland started Kid’s Stuff Etc. after meeting at their daughters’ pre-school in 1979. The store, which began with 2,000 sq. ft., was so successful, it was expanded three times. Kid’s Stuff Etc. & My Favorite Aunt’s is now more than 6,000 sq. ft.

“Everyone wants the latest designer brands and styles,” says Love. “Our store provides an outlet to consign last year’s “must haves,” but also to buy fabulous merchandise at great prices. As such, we are also able to support various charities such as Suit Yourself, which provides clothing to disadvantaged women going back to the workforce.” Top phoTo Holly and Larissa, Owners

Women’s clothing includes plus sizes, shoes and accessories and they carry brands such as Michael Kors, Coach, Lululemon, Marc Jacobs, J.Crew and Kate Spade. The store also accepts current and stylish home decor accessories —just like our wardrobes, we like to freshen up our homes as well.

Hawryschuk says, “The store’s appeal has grown over the years because no matter what your economic situation, everyone loves getting a great deal. You never know what you’ll find here!” Karolina, an image consultant, says she’s been shopping at the store for years and will continue to do so. “I stop by at least once a month, as there are always new and exciting clothes, shoes, jewelry and accessories at unbelievably decent prices,” she says. “I recommend to all my clients to sell the clothes they no longer wear or to shop to enrich their wardrobes.” Consignors earn 40 per cent of the sale price back on their items, which are sold at one-third to half the full retail price. Many have done very well, one customer says she saved all the money she made back from the store and took her family to Disneyland. “It’s fun for us,” says Hawryschuk. “We get to shop and look at unique and

Pamper & Play Salon and Spa A Perfect Paradise for Parents & Their Children By Tonya Lambert Photos Christophe Benard Photography

alking through the door of Pamper & Play Salon and Spa in Edmonton, you are greeted by the joyful sounds of children’s laughter. This salon is unique in the city for offering childminding services so parents can unwind and enjoy a relaxing and revitalizing experience in the spa knowing their children are we; cared for and happy. As a new mother, owner Tara Tremblett realized her own self-care was suffering as she was hesitant to ask her own mother to watch her infant son while she went to the salon and spa, considering it a luxury rather than a necessity. When she discovered that spas catering especially to parents were available in other cities,

she knew this was a service needed by mothers and fathers in Edmonton. Before opening Pamper & Play in October 2014, Tremblett put a lot of thought and planning into how to make the experience the best it could possibly be for her clients and their children alike. As a mother of two young boys, she knows the happiness and safety of your children are your main concern. The Pamper & Play playroom is a bright, cheerful area with a delightful forest scene on the wall. The room has been decorated in soothing colours that encourage calm interaction so parents are greeted with happy, not hyper, children after their salon and spa treatments. The playroom

is stocked with a variety of educational books and toys, including a child-sized kitchen and table and chairs, which are cleaned and disinfected regularly. For the older children, there is a large-screen television with Netflix. Children of all ages may visit the playroom while their parents are in the salon and spa. There is always a staff member trained in infant and child CPR in the playroom watching the children. The staff do bottle feeding and diaper changes and parents are welcome to send nut-free snacks with their children. The playroom is equipped with a top-of-the-line infant swing with a variety of movement, speed and sound options.

The playroom is located in a separate area at the front of the salon for the children’s safety in the event of an emergency, as well as to ensure clients of the salon and spa have a quiet and calming experience. While enjoying a peaceful massage, a restful manicure/pedicure or an undisturbed haircut and colour, parents can check on their children with the tablets provided for that purpose. Pamper & Play offers a wide range of spa treatments, including manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing, tinting, masques and massages, in a serene and soothing atmosphere. Guests enjoy the remarkable benefits of the pod-warmed, serum-based Amber products exclusive to the spa. In the L’anza exclusive salon, clients will find many cutting, colouring, styling, straightening and perming options from which to choose. History & Hair Damage: Hair Extensions

Megan Ledarney The Extensionist Consultancy Inc. 10139 82 Avenue NW Edmonton 780.705.8363 www.thExtensionist.com

air extensions were first introduced to the western world by way of African decent. Its founding father was the weave. Most suitable for African hair, the weave hid natural hair, allowing, “European textured” hair — the weave — to be safely sewn onto the natural braid. As such, this magnificent invention soon caught the eye of others who desired longer and thicker hair. But because every human has varying ethnic traits, there were challenges for non-African people applying the weave. Straight hair types did not need to tuck away their natural hair, they just needed more of it! For years, people with fine, straight hair took refuge in the weave, as it was the first hair extension product

available in our Canadian market. Unfortunately, because braids used in the weaving method are pulled excessively tight to allow for long-lasting wear, prolonged tension on the hair caused traction alopecia. This type of or tension hair loss is almost always associated with hair extension damage. Next, the fusion method was brought to the Canadian market as an alternative to the conventional weave. The fusion method used keratin adhesion bonding to bind natural hair with cosmetic hair. Then the taping technique arrived in our market and spread like wildfire. With each new method came entirely new issues for natural hair. If not properly suited the correct hair type problems arise by way of harsh adhesives being applied to the natural hair, use of the required solvents for removal, and potential excess tension to the natural hair. Over the last 10 years, more and more women in Canada have given in to the temptations of hair extensions, and unfortunately, many have fallen victim to hair damage caused by method, hair type or improper installation or removal procedures. Whilst it seems every method promises a world of benefits and guarantees no damage, women are beginning to see

STYLE

this is simply not true, especially when it comes to prolonged use, which can lead to traction alopecia. That is until now. There are now a number of methods using silicone-lined beads, which are tiny copper or aluminum tubes, lined with a silicone barrier to protect natural hair from damage. This new method has provided the most success for finer, thinner, and more delicate hair types. Five years ago, I developed a technique using silicone-lined pearl beads and wefts called VOGUEPEARL™. Combined with my uniquely developed personal hand technique, The Extensionist Consultancy Inc.’s signature installation technique was born. As a company, we have adapted our method to provide hair replacement services for women suffering from hair loss with the use of our signature method. VOGUEPEARL™ can last in the hair up to six months at one time, whilst maintaining the integrity of your natural hair. Finally, a method better suited for more hair types and prolonged use. Now everyone can enjoy long, full hair while encouraging natural, healthy hair growth and happier people.

3D Printing Could Change the FaCe oF PlastiC surgery By Henny Buffinga

3

D printing is one of the most exciting new technologies to emerge in recent years, most importantly because of the vast implications for almost any industry: manufacturing, shipping, construction, patenting, medicine… the possibilities are seemingly endless. The process works by creating objects one layer at a time, sequentially printing layers of paper, resin, plastic, metal, biomaterial or another material based on a digital scan or model. In medicine, advancements are being made with bio-printing, where the material used in the layering process can consist of skin cells, stem cells or the patient’s own cells, which can create an organ with a lower chance of the patient’s body rejecting it. The $2 billion 3D printing industry is projected to reach $6 billion by 2017, and the field of medicine is welcoming the possibilities of the new technology with successfully printed live tissue and working organs making headlines this year. Plastic surgeons in particular are taking advantage of this new technology in interesting ways. Using 3D printing as an educational tool, surgeons are able to print models of body parts in order to plan complex surgeries. This is the most widely used application of the technology at this time. These precise anatomical models allow a surgical team to evaluate several courses of action before determining the best scenario. The models can serve as a guide to the surgery, where time is critical. Any time saved during surgery means a greater chance at recovery. Another seemingly conventional use of 3D printing is proving invaluable to the cosmetic surgeons. Iranian cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yakub Avsar, for example, is using 3D printing to provide his clients with a more accurate view of themselves and what they would look like post-surgery. Avsar uses this technique with patient’s undergoing a rhinoplasty (nose job) to demonstrate realistic before and after models for his patients. Patients can now see their

26

new face from all angles and make a more educated decision on their surgery. 3D printing also holds exciting possibilities for aesthetic improvements for procedures such as breast augmentation. The implants could be designed by the plastic surgeon to fit the patient’s measurements and desired changes. This process would provide a customized implant that would suit the patient’s form perfectly. The costs of 3D technology are still high, not least because of the outlay of materials alone, over and above the technology. However, with 3D printers predicted to become more accessible and affordable in the coming years, it is anticipated the technology will become more widely embraced for the many advantages it can provide surgeons, many of them as of yet unexplored, and with seemingly unlimited possibilities for more visually appealing and safe procedures.

Sound Professional Advice

1. I am on a budget, and often see great “deals” on Botox at local Salons and Spas. If I can save money on my simple Botox treatment, why should I not do it?

I

njections with neuromodutors (Botox, Dysport) are not as simple as it may seem. The musculature and neurological anatomy in the face is quite complicated. With an untrained or inexperienced injector, a number of things can go wrong: droopy eyelids/ brows, inability to swallow, close your mouth, difficulty with speech, stroke-like symptoms, and inability to close your eyes properly. I have been injecting these products, as well as dermal fillers such as Juvederm, for more than 16 years. When I teach medical students at the University

Hospital, I stress the importance of both the end cosmetic result and the safety aspect of injecting these drugs. An advanced injector can give you so much more value for often the same price for brow lifts, smoothing of wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, neck tightening, smoothing of the chin, corrected nose (fillers), and improving the smile. 2. I’ve heard you can achieve results similar to a facelift without surgery in the doctor’s office today? Is that true? Yes, you are quite right. We are achieving excellent results with two revolutionary procedures in our office. One, the fractionated CO2 laser, provides excellent lifting, tightening and smoothing, as well as pigment eradication with minimal downtime. We also have a new controlled depth peel called the “Blue Peel” that should only be performed by a physician. It includes collagen and elastin stimulation, treatment of rosacea, skin tightening, pigment removal at the deepest level (so that it does not return, as with other procedures), and goes deep enough to eradicate skin disease such as skin cancer. Never before in the field of cosmetic dermatology have I had the tools to do so much for my patients with

HEALTH & WELLNESS

respect to safety, lower costs and reduced discomfort and downtime. It’s exciting to offer exceptional results similar to the face-lift, but without surgery. 3. I have tried so many times to lose weight, without success. How can you help me lose weight and keep it off? I am very proud of my patients and the results we have achieved with our excellent weightloss programs. We teach the basics of nutrition as well as in depth management of nutritional needs based on the patient’s lifestyle, goals and overall health. We do comprehensive lab work to assess underlying conditions that may interfere with the program and create a customized plan that is set up for longterm success. We see dramatic results motivating permanent lifestyle changes. Typical results include discontinuing medications for blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. We test our patient’s resting metabolic rates to provide true indications of what is necessary to keep this weight off. Our weight loss educator, Shannon, is passionate, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and above all, an excellent motivator. Weightloss is complicated; therefore, a highly qualified health care team is important for long-term success.

Getting Ahead of Seasonal Allergies

signal the release of histamine. Histamine is a small tissue protein that helps us heal by actually creating symptoms, which clear the body of the offending allergen. For example, a runny nose can clear allergens from the nasal passages. Therefore, allergy symptoms are a response to excess histamine in the body.

his time of year is beautiful. The sun is shining, which means we can finally feel some glorious heat soaking into our bodies. Soon the trees and flowers will be blooming and people will resurface after a long winter hibernating. Spring is a season of renewal and can be very uplifting; however, for some of us, spring brings with it unwanted symptoms such as sneezing, congestion and itchy, watery eyes — seasonal allergies. What are allergies? Excess histamine. Allergies occur when the immune system inappropriately overreacts to things in the environment or foods we eat. These allergens trigger the immune system to create antibodies that bind to mast cells and

spill histamine into the tissues. Nutrients such as quercetin, bromelain and vitamin C help stabilize these cells and keep histamine in storage. The food factor Some foods are either high in histamine or stimulate the mast cells to spill histamine into the tissues. Limiting high histamine foods can be helpful for reducing allergies.

It’s normal for the body to release histamine from time to time because it helps us heal; however, we should also be able to break it down again. Some people regularly suffer from allergies because they lack the ability to break down the excess histamine. An enzyme in the body called DAO (diamine oxidase) breaks down histamine with the help of copper and vitamin B6. Therefore, if we are lacking either of these two nutrients, allergy symptoms can persist.

Alleviating allergies – controlling the production of histamine with iodine

The naturopathic approach

Iodine controls the production of histamine produced in our cells. An iodine deficiency can cause the body to overproduce histamine and create allergy symptoms. Alleviating allergies – reducing histamine by stabilizing mast cells Sometimes allergies occur because the mast cells, or cells that store histamine away, are unstable and unnecessarily

HEALTH & WELLNESS

A large part of the immune system lies beneath the intestines. If the digestive system is unhealthy, it sends inflammatory messages to the immune system, which tips off the allergy response. Avoiding food sensitivities, ensuring food is properly digested and maintaining a healthy gut with helpful probiotics can go a long way to prevent seasonal allergies.

Antihistamines such as Benadryl or Reactine block histamine receptors in the body; if histamine can’t bind to the receptors, then it can’t cause symptoms. Our goal is to reduce histamine altogether and eliminate the dependence on antihistamines. The important thing to remember is the cause of one person’s allergies may be different from another. Naturopathic medicine strives to find the root cause of illness and create individualized treatment plans to address each person’s unique needs.

rom the natural effects of aging to impacts associated with medical issues, many people would change something when it comes to their appearance. For Dr. Vance Elliott and the team at Advanced Hair and Skin Surgery, helping patients in Edmonton and the surrounding areas address their concerns regarding appearance comes down to a simple philosophy: “You don’t have to live with it,” Dr. Elliott says. “I can help you.” In 2004, after several years as the head surgeon for a major North American

hair restoration group, Dr. Elliott opened his hair surgery and cosmetic medicine practice in Sherwood Park. Since then, his practice has expaneded to offer a variety of dermatologic surgeries, nonsurgical facial rejuvenation procedures, and vein treatments. Still active in teaching methods of hair restoration across the country, Dr. Elliott remains focused on helping patients address hair loss at any age. “Medical and surgical treatment of hair loss in men and women is the largest part of my practice,” he says, noting that most patients don’t know about the effectiveness of medical therapy for hair loss.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

“Medical therapy works extremely well. Most patients that come to see me will not need a hair transplant,” Dr. Elliott explains. “The treatment works so well that going bald is a choice. It doesn’t have to happen, and it can be prevented.” The clinic offers personal and attentive service, beginning with the initial consultation where Dr. Elliott speaks to each patient about his or her respective issues. It is this comfortable, personable approach to cosmetic and medical treatments that makes a visit to Advanced Hair and Skin Surgery more enjoyable than daunting, explains one of Dr. Elliott’s current patients.

“Dr. Elliott and the whole staff really make a personal connection with you,” says Lana Anderson. She has been a patient at the practice for more than five years. “It is not intimidating at all.” Lana visits Advanced Hair and Skin Surgery for some of the other cosmetic procedures Dr. Elliott offers. An increasingly popular part of the practice, the clinic offers temporary, semipermanent and permanent fillers for the treatment of lines and wrinkles. They also offer treatment for acne, acne scarring and varicose veins. While gel fillers remain popular, not all patients are aware of the availability and cost-effective nature of permanent fillers, Dr. Elliott says. He has worked with these fillers for many years with wonderful and rewarding results for his patients. “It is basically the difference between renting and buying,” Dr. Elliott says of temporary versus permanent fillers. “If a patient likes the results from a temporary filler, and they want to maintain that result, using a permanent fillers means they don’t have to keep coming back in for appointments.”

At Advanced Hair and Skin Surgery, it truly is all about the results. Lana says “Dr. Elliott really is an artist in what he does,” noting how subtle and natural the results of his treatments are. “When I have gone in for a treatment, it gives me a boost of self-confidence, and that confidence has a positive effect on others aspects of my life.” Advanced Hair and Skin Surgery Synergy Wellness Centre #113, 501 Bethel Drive Sherwood Park, AB 780.416.8999 www.drvanceelliott.com Dr. Vance Elliott

cupuncture is one part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that treats conditions through the insertion of fine sterile disposable needles into targeted acupuncture points on the body. Its practice stimulates the body’s natural healing process. As such, acupuncture is an ideal treatment for moms-to-be and new mothers as it can help women maintain a healthy state with a safe, effective and drug free alternative. Pre-bAby Acupuncture can ease several symptoms during pregnancy including nausea and vomiting, constipation and hemorrhoids,

headaches and migraines, back, hip, pelvic pain, fatigue, anxiety and depression, breech and posterior babies, pre-birth preparation and preparation for medical induction. In fact, pre-birth treatments starting weekly at 36 weeks gestation can naturally help prepare a woman’s body for labour. Pre-birth treatments also ensures a woman has optimal energy for labour. Moreover, a clinical trial has shown acupuncture to be an effective treatment to help ripen and dilate the cervix, as well as reduce: labour time, pain, the rate of epidurals, medical inductions and caesarean sections. Acupuncture points are selected based on the woman’s physical constitution and pregnancy history. Points may be selected to reduce stress and anxiety, to reduce pain, and relax tendons and ligaments to help open hips for an efficient labour. With the use of moxabustion or mugwort, a type of herb burned to warm specific acupuncture points, acupuncture can help assist with breech or posterior position babies — effectively turning babies upside down. Breech babies are ideally treated at 34 to 35 weeks gestation but can be

treated later in pregnancy as well. It can also be an effective treatment to induce labour, providing a natural and gentle push into labour and is an alternative to medical induction. Induction acupuncture stirs the baby from a restful state into an active state, moving the baby downward to start labour, aiding in preparing the baby for labour. It has been said: “If the fruit is ripe it will drop.” In other words, if the baby is ready, labour will occur. For the New MoM Acupuncture in combination with dietary therapy can continue to support women post pregnancy. Postnatal treatments focus on promoting recovery, balancing hormones, as well as nourishing and rejuvenating the body. Treatments can also help several postnatal conditions such as postpartum depression, mood disorders, insufficient lactation, wound and scar healing and urinary incontinence. To learn more about how acupuncture can be an effective, natural treatment during pregnancy as well as assisting the body through the transitions of pregnancy from the moment of conception to birth and post birth, book a consult with Sweet Momma.

he English conductor Jeffrey Tate once referred to the string quartet as “the most perfect expression of human behaviour,” and this is certainly true of Edmonton’s Vaughan String Quartet. Their dynamic performances transport listeners across the fiery heights of passion to the depths of melodic melancholy, from frenzied, feverish fury to calm, soothing tranquility. Their virtuosic abilities will steal your breath away, leaving you spellbound. Comprised of two couples — one Brazilian and the other Italian — the Vaughan String Quartet’s vibrant performances and wonderful blend of technical brilliance, intellectual rigour, rich interpretations and deep emotion have been thrilling audiences for more than two years and have already garnered a faithful following. The four musicians met at a local recital and upon discovering their mutual love for the intimate sounds of chamber music, they founded the Vaughan String Quartet in February 2013. Incredibly dedicated to their craft, they practice together almost daily, enriching each other and future audiences with fresh, colourful renditions.

The string quartet arrangement of two violins, a viola and a cello originated with Joseph Haydn in the 1750s. The Vaughan String Quartet combines the sparkling sounds of Vladimir Rufino and Mattia Berrini on first and second violins with the warm, velvety vibrations of Fabiola Amorim’s viola and the stately notes of Silvia Buttiglione’s cello. The Vaughan String Quartet shares their appreciation for chamber music not only with audiences but also with students through the string quartet course they conduct at the Alberta College Conservatory of Music – Grant MacEwan University. In addition, they have collaborated with Edmonton Opera, Edmonton Verdi Festival, the Banff Centre, the Western Canadian Music Awards, composer Robert Rival, University of Alberta Symphony Orchestra, Alberta College Conservatory of Music and the St. Albert Chamber Music Recital Series. In May, they will travel to New York City to perform the Homage to Tango concert in which they will premier the second movement of Edmonton composer Allan Gilliland’s Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra in his version for accordion and string quartet, in collaboration with classical accordionist Antonio Peruch and pianist Polly Ferman. The Vaughan String Quartet gives regular concerts throughout the year including a free five-part series funded by the Edmonton Arts Council, the City of Edmonton and CKUA. The group often brings both local and international artists in for exhilarating collaborations. Next year’s concert series will combine selections from their classical repertoire with contemporary pieces by Canadian composers, including several never heard before. For an extraordinary experience, check the calendar page on the Vaughan String Quartet’s website. Their sensuous sounds that speak so eloquently to the heart will leave you mesmerized. Family Game Night at Table Top Café By Courtney Tait Photos Jonathan Lima Guiroux

Y

ou may not guess it by the rise in tablets, smart phones and digital apps, but we’re in a golden era of what some might consider a vintage pastime: playing board games. Just step into Table Top Café — a large, homey space furnished with kitchen tables and filled with people rolling dice and trading cards. There you’ll see

how the art of passing go, so to speak, is alive. Opened in 2013, Table Top Café is the brainchild of owner Brian Flowers, a board game enthusiast who envisioned a place where people could sample different games, enjoy good food and drinks, and spend quality time together. “People tell us it’s awesome,” says Brian. “The staff are super friendly and

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

can teach people how to play a lot of the games. Board games are in a huge upswing right now, and we have the biggest selection in Edmonton.” With close to 500 games available, customers have the opportunity to try before they buy, a big incentive to visiting if you are considering a new game for yourself or your kids. A $5 daily fee allows you to play as many

games as you want. Most of the newer games at Table Top are for sale, with prices ranging from $5 to $125, and the selection is always expanding. While board games make up the majority of options, Brian says many games, such as the popular Cards Against Humanity, use cards or other media aside from boards. What you won’t find are video games; while the café does have Wifi, its focus is on screen-free recreation. Table Top has become a meeting place for people of all ages with similar game interests, drawing a Meetup group on Saturdays and fans of the cyberpunk themed card game Netrunner on Wednesday nights. On Monday evenings, guests can play with Brian and whoever else joins in. Planning a birthday party or other event? You can reserve seating at Table Top Cafe for your group, and are welcome to bring in your own cake. Offering a new take on family game night, Table Top provides kids and parents with a fun way to connect in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. Its location features a spacious parking lot, making it easy to settle in for as long as you wish. “We have lots of families that come in two or three times a week,” says Brian. “It’s a good place to get kids away from the TV and to disconnect from technology.” Along with a range of hot and cold drinks, beers and coolers, Table Top serves tasty made-to-order options such as burritos and paninis. Home baked brownies, cookies, carrot cake and a candy bowl — the ideal game time snack — are also on the menu. As Table Top’s success continues to grow, Brian plans to open a second location in Edmonton, and eventually one in Calgary. “Running a business is similar to a board game,” he says. “It’s like I’m playing my own board game. I enjoy doing it, and it’s very rewarding that so many people like it.”

veryone has olive oil in their the kitchen pantry — either as a staple for everyday cooking, a key ingredient for homemade salad dressings or perhaps a long forgotten item in need of inspiration. Whichever the case, OLiV Tasting Room is going to change the way you look at quality. Now you can really amp up the flavour of your food and impress your guests with the very best oils. OLiV Tasting Room proves there’s more to extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) than what is found on the average pantry shelf. OLiV Tasting Room features more than 60 flavours of EVOO, balsamic vinegar and white balsamic vinegar, all of which are available for free tasting every day in their stores. OLiV is different because they own their own olive farms, manage the harvest and processing, and bottle onsite overseas. This integrated process means their product is of a higher quality and has a longer shelf life. “We’ve been in business for a little over a year,” says Ian Reid, who co-owns the Edmonton and St. Albert locations with Susan Reid. “In that time we’ve found there

are three broad types of customers: the foodies who are really interested in the cookbook and the creative ways they can use olive oil and balsamic vinegar, the growing numbers who are looking for the many health benefits attributed to EVOO, and the people who come in and say ‘what do you do with this stuff?’” The aim of OLiV Tasting Room is to educate clientele with friendly staff who encourage customers to taste the product. With so many premium flavoured and unflavoured options, the atmosphere of experimentation is ripe with the discovery of unique flavour combinations. In addition to their tasting room, where clients are free to taste all their products, OLiV also hosts private tasting parties, which can accommodate groups as small as ten and as large as 60 guests. These tasting parties are held after store hours

and provide an excellent opportunity for a culinary evening experience — featuring wine, bread, meats and cheeses while the host describes the history of the oils and vinegars and describes the flavours to look for.

The Fine Lifestyles team has partnered with OLiV for a very SPECIAL GIVEAWAY!

OLiV Tasting Room has a brand new cookbook with many recipes designed to enhance the flavours of a dish with gourmet oils and vinegars. Flavoured with natural essential oils and sweet, spicy, herbal, or fruity flavour combinations, their oils will naturally elevate your food.

ust imagine the sound of a steak sizzling on the grill. Close your eyes and smell a summer evening with wafts of a chicken slowly roasting on a barbeque rotisserie. Or better yet, start planning a summer menu that includes an Okanogan white wine, baked salmon fillets and fresh sides. Charlies Place, a gourmet meat shop located in Sherwood Park, is the perfect accompaniment to the perfect meal. “Growing up on the farm, I never knew what it meant to look forward to a good meal. People often talked about occasions with specially prepared dishes. We ate good every time we sat down at the table,” says Charles Hansen. It’s that farm goodness that he and his daughter, Tiffany, bring to work everyday.

“Great dinners start with the best ingredients and a little preparation. Let us take care of all of that for you.” After 29 years of cattle, hog and chicken farming, Charles decided to take his experience as a butcher on the road, selling his homemade, mouth-watering sausages at various farmers’ markets around Edmonton. Quickly he realized his products were in demand. In fact, those same products are available at Charlies. Signature flavours of his sausages include Hawaiian with pineapple, green peppers and cheese, cheese and jalapeno, and olive and cheese. Available in countless combinations of lean pork, beef, chicken and turkey, they are perfect for lunch at the lake. But that’s not all, Charles is also know for his cut to perfection Alberta beef, thick strips of in-house bacon, smoked pork, beef and turkey jerky as well as smoked chicken, hams and turkeys. Charlies sells perogies and cabbage rolls, which can be purchased gluten free, not to mention his Montreal smoked meat and high quality luncheon meats. “We source all of our products locally. We stay open for our customers who come in at closing time and we get to know our neighbours across the counter,” he says.

In fact, they will cut to spec your dinner and also season and/or marinade your meat just as you like it. All you have to do is take it home and graciously accept the praise that comes from serving your friends and family prime products. “We are the dining out alternative,” he says. Charles and his staff will do all of the preparation; you just need to cook it at home and relax. Order one steak or a complete package of cuts for the entire weekend away. All of their products are fresh — never frozen — and they are

vacuum sealed so you can buy your meat ahead of time. Charles and Tiffany are not your typical mom and pop operation. Along with their staff, they are a father/daughter meat shop, raising the bar on delicious meals made at home. By shopping at Charlies for your family, you are supporting theirs. El CortEz

Annual Dining Guide

From the 100-year-old Mexican doors to the urban gothic décor featuring graffiti-covered walls, no aesthetic detail has been overlooked at El Cortez Mexican Kitchen + Tequila Bar. Be warned though, the Latin world of El Cortez is not that of repetitious beach resort life; quite the opposite actually, El Cortez is heavily inspired by Chicano, Southern California culture. With its bright and vibrant colours, it is the celebration of life whilst acknowledging that death is always just around the corner. This curious juxtaposition can be seen in the grinning, colourful skulls found throughout the restaurant and in the underground tequila cellar. It can also be found in the statues of the Virgin Mary that grace El Cortez, arms outstretched, welcoming La Buena Vida — the good life. This “good life” can be deliciously complimented by diving into one of Cortez’s inventive culinary creations. The menu features many unique flavor combinations, from Valentina’s Fried Cauliflower, Korean Fusion ‘Bulgogi” Steak Tacos, exotic Swordfish Ceviche, Chorizo Corn Pops, to the Roast Pork Rojo. A bold addition to Edmonton’s blossoming culinary scene, El Cortez is rich is in all things creative. Experience the authentic atmosphere, get lost in the music emanating from the tequila cellar, explore over 140 different tequilas and mezcals and savour innovative Latin-inspired cuisine, all in the heart of Old Strathcona.

Magic & Mystery OF THE

ANCIENT MAYA By K.A. Beattie Photos Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The Mayan civilization is for the most part associated with the spectacular circular calendar, astronomy and, we can’t forget, the sacrifices so embellished by Hollywood. Quite honestly, I had no idea of the extent of the Mayan civilization and the incredible accomplishments that resulted from such a civilized, artistic, hardworking, industrious society.

aturally, when travelling in Mayan country, one expects to see the ruins and many step pyramids of Tikal and numerous authentic archaeological sites, but the plants are very nice, too. The association of plants and spirituality as medicines in the Mayan culture was very strong and still exists to this day. Traditional wisdoms seem not to have been obscured by synthesised medicines, tourism and modern day technology. This is not to say all that we take for granted doesn’t exist. It does, but there is a cultural reverence for ancestral knowledge and a deep appreciation for what Mother Nature continues to provide. A visit to a local market in Santo Tomas, Guatemala will reveal first hand what the local population considers “plant medicine.”

SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

Granted, there are a great many uncommon looking specimens, packages and bundles of strange foliage, roots and bark bits from peculiar trees, but all very familiar to the still vibrant Mayan population. Our ship, Oceania’s Regatta, made several ports of call along the coast of Central America, allowing guests many opportunities to experience a real, close up look at the modern Mayan culture as well as a peek into their past. Shore excursions in Cozumel and Costa Maya Mexico, Santo Tomas, Guatemala, Belize City, Belize and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica wove an intriguing cultural fabric, bringing to life the ancient Maya culture reflecting today’s society as well. Fascinating discussions and tours with local guides through ruins, rain forests,

back roads and beaches left us tired, but chocked full of new information and more questions. Of considerable fascination for me, being a plant person, was the use of plants for medicines and spiritual healing. The goddess of medicine, healing, childbirth and fertility named Ixchel, is depicted as a child, maiden, mother and crone, almost identical to the Celtic belief. She wears a headdress of a serpent and holds a plant in her palm and is easily found on a wall of hieroglyphs. There are hundreds of icons representing everything from a single letter of the alphabet to full concepts. Oceania’s Regatta is a marvelous “small ship” and one of our favourites for many reasons. Like the rest of the fleet, the service not only aboard but pre and post-cruise is exemplary. Consider any business with at least 45 different nationalities all working harmoniously day in and day out — rather like the UN without the translators. Every time we

see them, our stateroom staff greet us with enormous smiles and a genuine salutations, not simply the mantra of so many North American retail staff: “Have a nice day!” Each staff person proudly wears a metal nametag stating his or her first name and home country — it’s a great conversation starter. In the grand dining room the wait staff is crisp, professional and buzzing about like worker bees in a lavish hive, never bumping into each other. We are most comfortable dressing in country club casual clothes for the evening meal, such as a golf shirt and long dress trousers. There is no need to pack formal or fancy evening wear — unless you prefer to do so. From time to time, I don a sports jacket and maybe a tie, but again the choice is yours. There are also no prescribed dining times. You can eat dinner when you wish between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.. Alternatively, the buffet at the rear of the ship provides a similar menu, and you

SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

can dine alfresco if desired. Failing all of that, perhaps after a long day of jungle trudging, rooms service in the stateroom allows you to dine in whatever you please, put in a movie or DVD, and just chill. We have discovered just how much we didn’t know about the ancient Mayan civilization, which has added more fuel to our fire. Once home we will be pouring over our photos and literature in an attempt to become more familiar for our next excursion to Central America. Consider joining us this October as we sail with Oceania from Istanbul to Dubai, and thereafter on to India, Madagascar and South Africa. For the time of your life, simply contact a travel agent or Oceania Cruises yourself and see what the world has to offer. The Alzheimer’s ProAm Face Off Hockey Tournament offers both amateur players and NHL Alumni to spend time on and off the ice having fun while raising money and awareness for Alzheimer’s research and caregiver support. AMAZING GARAGES High-End Homes For Your High-End Vehicles

By Melanie Furlong Photos Courtesy tdSwasnburg design studio, Alex Watson Photography and TR Building and Remodelling

Garages are not just places to park your car anymore. Homeowners around the world are finding ways to dwell more comfortably with their vehicles, whether that means creating an amazing showroom around them or hiding them away.

ake car collection company CEO Craig Jackson who built his Arizona home with a circular 3,600 sq. ft. garage. It displays his muscle and luxury car collection facing centre, like the spokes in a wheel. At the centre, a Bugatti Veyron rotates on a deserving pedestal. If you own a Bugatti, Ferarri, Lamborghini or McLaren, a climate-controlled “Garage Mahal” will definitely be on your wish list. For many car aficionados, the ideal garage shares the same elements as the man cave. Garages with wet bars, flat-screen televisions, fitness centres, woodworking shops and lounge areas to display autorelated memorabilia are becoming increasingly popular. Las Vegas native and Forty4 Asset Management CIO Francis Wisniewski put a small basketball court and gambling room — complete with a full-size craps table —in his 15,000 sq. ft. garage. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who famously collects Porsches, keeps them in an underground garage three blocks from his

home. The three-storey garage houses his 46 Porsches and features a clubroom with a billiard table, kitchenette and office. A New York penthouse apartment listed for sale comes with an “en suite sky garage” that allows for your car to be transported by elevator to your apartment and parked just outside your door. The idea of using a car lift, or elevator, has gone beyond space-challenged citydwellers. Car collectors who want to maximize garage space by stacking their vehicles also use them, as do those who prefer the attention stay focused on the garden, and not on their vehicle. Swiss company Cardok has created a bespoke parking solution to suit any home or vehicle. Installed under an existing driveway, cars disappear into a hole via a hydraulic ramp. A decorative roof fools passersby into thinking there’s no car parked at home and maintains the decorative appeal of your garden. It becomes impossible to vandalize or steal the car and you don’t have to worry about power-outages because every

HOUSE & HOME

installation comes with a small back-up generator. The same company offers the CarLift, which was developed to enable customers to access their basement garages utilizing a lift rather than a ramp. Turntables can also be provided within the basement garage to allow easier access to every underground parking space. In some scenarios, a garage is more valuable to a property when converted into living space. Some choose to transform their garages into extra bedrooms, home gyms or cinemas, while they move the car underground, as it’s more cost-effective than moving to a larger house. About 3.5 million Canadian homes have attached garages, according to a 2007 report on energy use by Natural Resources Canada, and a garage generally increases property values by approximately 64 per cent of its cost, depending on current markets. The kind of garage that suits you and your car perfectly will depend on budget, space and how you will enjoy your wheels best.

Quality Begins With a Strong Foundation By Henny Buffinga

I

n 2003, Darwin and Tanya Holm entered the homebuilding industry after a bad experience while trying to finish their basement. The home was only nine-years-old but did not have a straight wall to be found. Speaking with friends about their situation, the couple realized many people they

80

FineLifestyles

EDMONTON

knew felt frustrated with the process of building their own new homes. Common complaints included not being able to visit the home during construction to check on things, limited colour choices and finishes, and being charged exorbitantly for any changes they wanted to make – if changes were permitted at all.

HOUSE & HOME

Frustrated with the quality of their home and thinking their friends should have been able to get exactly what they wanted with one of the biggest investments they’ll ever make, the husband and wife duo decided to get into the business to offer a different experience; and that is what Contrast Homes provides.

Darwin has been in the construction industry for over 30 years, and is experienced in both commercial and residential construction. A journeyman carpenter and journeyman ironworker with red seal certification in both trades, he was also a construction superintendent overseeing large commercial construction projects; so starting his own business wasn’t a stretch. Learning from their bad experience, the Holms’ top priority is quality construction, making sure the “bones” of the house will withstand the test of time. They pride themselves on their attention to detail, and don’t accept substandard work from their subcontractors. “When people see custom, they automatically think it means expensive,” Tanya explains. “Our clients give us a wish list and a budget, and we try to provide as much of that wish list as we can that fits within their budget. Custom doesn’t have to mean expensive: it just means you get to choose exactly what you want within your budget.”

She goes on, “Some of our clients know exactly what they want and some even come to us with their blueprints all ready to go. However with most of our clients we sit down and help them make a list of needs and wants and then our drafts people design a plan that fits their vision.” Honesty and transparency along with a hands-on approach sets this company apart. The personal one-on-one guidance ensures customer satisfaction, and while some contractors only allow one or two visits to the building site, Contrast Homes allows clients to make appointments whenever they want to inspect the progress of their home. “We try to involve our clients as much as they want; we want to make them comfortable and educate them throughout the entire construction process,” says Darwin. “Our goal is to exceed their expectations.” As a BUILT GREEN member, Contrast Homes is committed to getting more energy efficient products into their homes. By staying on top of cutting

HOUSE & HOME

edge technology and products, they can educate clients on the benefits of a higher efficiency home. Their first show home, a 2,496 sq. ft. walkout bungalow, is currently under construction in the Meadow Hawk subdivision of Sherwood Park. It is scheduled to open in June of 2015. Darwin and Tanya are excited about the opportunity to showcase the quality and craftsmanship of the homes they build. They are now owners of the ultimate décor shop filled with unique and limitedrun pieces. Their services are diverse, including furniture and accessory selection, space planning, home styling, colour and feng shui consultations to meet every décor need. “We help educate our clients so they can make informed decisions based on their lifestyle and taste. Our services can be as simple as helping select paint colours to enliven a space. We maximize the livability of each room we work on — it can really change the energy of a space and how you feel in it,” says Funston. At Henry’s there is no signature look. The store has an eclectic array of items and can accommodate any client’s style, from modern to traditional. As a locally owned and operated business, the owners firmly believe in the “shop local” movement. They offer 100 per cent Canadian custom upholstery services and a wide selection of North American made furniture and accessories. Henry’s is dedicated to getting clients the perfect pieces to create timeless spaces that don’t just follow trends. “We don’t want to sell clients a sofa; we want them to have the right sofa. We don’t just sell them pieces because they are in stock. We are creating their dream space and will source items from anywhere,” says Funston. The dedicated team approaches every project focused on the four principles on which the business was founded on: imagination, quality, knowledge and commitment — a recipe for the perfect space. For those wanting to stimulate all the senses and elevate the scent of their home, Henry’s carries a wide selection of Lampe Berger products, with fragrances that range from crisp and clean to warm and inviting. Every person is different and so is their home, so décor must be a genuine expression of style and reflection of personality. “We are proud to be able to create spaces that surprise our clients. There is no better feeling than seeing the amazement people feel when we have surpassed their expectations and they have an extraordinary space. We all work hard, so it’s important to have a space that nurtures you and allows you to relax,” says Funston. ear t Your Space, a professional organizing and coaching business founded by Candice Levesque, helps people let go of the unnecessary things taking up space in their life. The company’s philosophy of “less things, more heart” empowers its clients to remove the obstacles that create clutter, so they can focus on what’s most important to them. As a certified professional coach and member of Professional Organizers in Canada, Candice has trained extensively in both fields. A former child and youth care worker, she became inspired to start Heart Your Space through seeing the impact a disorganized home has on families’ well being. “People’s spaces hold them back in all different ways,“ says Candice. “When you clear out the things you don’t need, you feel more comfortable in your home, and are less stressed and more productive.”

Candice says they’re thrilled. With the help of Heart Your Space, a recent client transformed a chaotic “catch-all” area of her home into a well-designed sewing room. “She was excited about the change and what she would be able to create,” says Candice. “Finally, she could accomplish what she wanted.”

So how does the process work? Candice offers a 30-minute complimentary consultation to determine how the spaces in your home function and what areas you want to improve. Options range from having specific rooms or closets repurposed to whole house organization, move in/move out organization and estate clearing.

Those who want to delve even further into the transformation process should welcome Heart Your Space’s coaching services. Candice offers Individual, Family, and Life Changes Coaching, supporting people in taking concrete steps to achieve their goals. “Together, we take an assessment of their life and the areas they want to work on,” says Candice. The next step is creating a vision statement, which helps people imagine how their lives will be if they achieve their goals. With Candice’s coaching, they are better equipped to stick with their plan, turning their vision into reality.

Heart Your Space’s organizing process typically includes creating three piles: items to throw away, keep or donate. While purging can be a challenge for clients, once the project is complete,

Mason says, “We recommend that our customers take samples home to view in their lighting

“There are schools in the nearby Rio Terrace and Patricia Heights areas, which are only a few blocks away, and easy access to bus service,” comments Jenn Brown, project manager for Hillcrest. This central location also offers easy access to the Whitemud Freeway for your daily commute to work.

Located adjacent to 156th Street, this peaceful upscale property offers mature landscaping, incredible scenery and plenty of amenities within close proximity.

or nature watchers as well as those who wish to enjoy the brilliance of this picturesque location. “We’ve enhanced the trails surrounding Hillcrest to make it a more pleasurable experience for all residents,” adds Brown. Along with the natural beauty of the location, this quiet cul de sac also offers historical significance. According to Brown, the property was once the site of the Hillcrest Country Club and, more recently, the Jewish Community Centre.

The inimitable layout of the property offers privacy and the contented aura of a small community. Lot sizes range from 54 feet to 82 feet in width and are uniquely shaped around the property. These stunning lots allow homeowners to maximum space for their homes and have privacy for backyard entertaining and active family living. In addition to the flexibility residents can enjoy when planning their landscaping, Brown notes the architectural guidelines are also quite open. Hillcrest allows many types of architectural designs as long as they are true to form. An example of this would be if a purchaser who wants a craftsman style home, the purchaser is required to have it constructed to a full craftsman architecture, or a contemporary home is to be constructed to a full contemporary style. Being formerly established and located essentially in the heart of Edmonton, roads and utility lines were previously within the city grid. Brown points out these services have been upgraded to serve the needs of residents. Ideal for young families, empty-nesters and every phase in between, living in the Hillcrest area will make your dream lifestyle a reality. Just imagine what it would be like waking up every morning in this semiprivate and peaceful neighbourhood. that enhances efficiency in the kitchen. Both the Servo-Drive and Tip-On drawer systems allow users to open and close drawers with the bump of a hip, or the tap of a toe. Not only does this technology create a space that is easy to work in with your hands full, it is forward thinking for those clients who have difficulties with arthritis, back problems, or even little ones in the house who want to be able to grab their own snacks after school. “People who love to cook in their kitchen, and families that gather in their kitchen each day, want to have a beautiful, functional and inspiring kitchen,” Sandham says. “It all comes down to the design of a kitchen complementing the way you use it.”

Countertops…unplugged? Today’s kitchens are designed with more outlets, charging stations and remotes in an attempt to accommodate an endless array of mobile devices, appliances and gadgets. But it can truly be a bother dealing with the tangled cables and endless wires these items require — something the DuPont™ Corian® line of surfaces aims to do away with.

The old adage “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” becomes a mantra in the kitchen, where organization and functionality are paramount.

ith to d ay ’s wo r l d interconnected by modern technology — putting information, support and entertainment at our fingertips — it is only fitting to see the most-used room in the home moving in the same direction. From automated cabinetry and ingenious design to the integration of smart technologies in appliances and even countertops, the kitchen is becoming a gallery of innovations.

AutomAtions And innovAtions The idea that every space and item in a kitchen serves a purpose is one the world of cabinetry has embraced wholeheartedly over the past decade or so. The items and systems available for organizing cabinets, pantries and drawers allow homeowners

to create customized storage to complement their work habits and lifestyle — and all behind closed doors. As many have moved away from traditional cupboards, opting for the easier access drawers provide, Lisa Sandham, an interior designer based out of Thunder Bay, Ont., points to innovations such as drawers designed specifically to fit into corners as a means to maximizing storage space. In traditional kitchen designs, a lot of space is consumed by creating corners with countertops and the cabinets beneath them, and often this space is difficult to use. Designs like the Space Corner offered by Blum Canada actually allow full use of under-counter space in corners, Sandham says, and have done away with the problematic “Lazy Susans” of the past. Blum Canada offers another innovation

Debuting at the 2014 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas, Nev., DuPont ™ Corian ® surfaces are now able to wirelessly charge smart mobile devices. All you have to do is put your phone or tablet on the countertop, and a transmitter beneath the surface connects to a receiver — in the form of a phone, phone case or wireless charging ring — to charge your device. “Electromagnetism moves from the transmitter to the receiver where power is extracted. [Induction charging] was used instead of more traditional charging methods due to the presence of water on countertops,” says Lisa Jenkins, Canadian business manager for DuPont™ Building Innovations. The nonporous and stain-resistant surfaces are available in an array of colours — and with wireless charging technology due to be available for purchase by mid-2015, countertops may soon be serving double-duty. “Since the kitchen tends to be the family hub, we know it is a logical place for cell phone charging,” Jenkins says. “But we also know the last thing anyone needs is more wires and clutter on their countertop.”

Combining Outdoor Beauty with

INDOOR COMFORT By Rebecca Henderson

F

or Suncoast Enclosures president, Randie James, there is nothing quite like the great outdoors. It’s the reason he founded his business in 1991. “Large screen enclosures in warmer climates are not new,” says James. “However, I was convinced there was a definite need for a product like this in Canada.” James’ cousin first discovered the screen enclosure business in Australia. Intrigued, James then got on a plane, curious to see if a product like that could work in Canada. After a few trials on his home, the product proved it could withstand the harsh Canadian winters and James knew instinctively Canadians would want one for their homes too. James set up a display the following spring at the home show, which generated a lot of interest. He ended up selling and building more than 50 screen rooms that first year. Innovative and modern, Suncoast Enclosures now operates throughout North America and continues to be ahead of the curve when it comes to products that satisfy customer needs. With three custom products available, including a three-season room, screen room and louvered roof, each comes with its own distinct benefits. What they all

HOUSE & HOME

have in common, however, is the ability to bring the outdoors inside, to block out sun and wind and to allow varying levels of privacy. “With our rooms, you feel connected to the outdoors while still enjoying the comforts of home,” says Daniel Butler, corporate general manager of Edmonton. “Your sunroom is a like an extra living space with added optional amenities such as an entertainment unit, dining room or fireplace.” A Suncoast enclosure, which utilizes high-tension screens as roof panels engineered for harsh Canadian winters, offers homeowners protection without feeling enclosed by a roof or walls and is a great addition to a hot tub or pool. It keeps insects and leaves out of the pool without closing off the sun or beautiful night sky. By adding a polycarbonate roof, which allows 95 per cent of light, you can enjoy the room even on rainy days. On overcast days, the polycarbonate roof gives off a glow that creates an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. The lightweight aluminum frames are all custom powdercoated in hundreds of different colours and even anodized to match existing colour schemes.

THE THREE-SEASON ROOM The three-season room is Suncoast’s forté, offering a bright space with 75 per cent ventilation when the windows are open and extended enjoyment of the seasons when they are closed. Threeseason rooms are often pre-wired for electricity. “Many people find they can use the rooms for nine months of the year with a small heat source,” says Butler. Whatever your reason, an extension into nature is always welcome. SCREEN ROOMS Screen rooms are the reason Suncoast has been in business for more than 20 years. A screen room allows you to be entirely outdoors to enjoy a light breeze, a warm day or a starry night without the hassle of mosquitoes, wasps or flies; in other words, no discomfort, annoyance or aggravation from those pesky insects. Screen rooms can also always be turned into three season rooms with the simple addition of windows, giving you the ultimate flexibility should your needs change in time. Best of all, Suncoast rooms are designed and built for your existing deck or patio, eliminating the need to build a new floor or foundation. THE LOUVERED ROOF If you’re looking for shade while sitting outside, the louvered roof has the appearance of a pergola, a common feature in gardens or outdoor sitting areas. A pergola faces east to west and blocks direct sunlight for those seated beneath, while remaining open to the sky. With the touch of a button, the slats on the louvered roof can close to block out rain with a tight seal. Butler says James was instrumental in the creation and design of the louvered

roof. “Randie changed the material from crimped steel to extruded aluminum,” he says. “Extruded aluminum is lighter and stronger — and we also protect it with a powder-coated finish making it beautiful and long-lasting.” As an added bonus, the louvered roof is solarpowered — saving you money and the world energy. Butler says it’s not only James’ revolutionary and innovative thinking that’s kept him a loyal employee for nine years; it’s also being part of such a great team. “Randie is open-minded to allow for personal growth, building jobs within the company,” says Butler. “He encourages a team environment where everyone knows one another.” James’ sons are a part of the family business as well. Son Ryan, acts as general manager in Calgary, while his other son, Mitch, is the general manager in Vancouver. Suncoast’s head office in Edmonton features a 15,000 sq. ft. warehouse and 1,800 sq. ft. showroom. “All of our products are on display, so our customers are able to envision the space and know what to expect when investing in our products,” says Butler. Suncoast is continuously innovating for customer satisfaction. “At Suncoast, we strive to make our products and service even better,” notes Butler. can simply be lowered with the deck, allowing them to enjoy a healthier and more active lifestyle. Swimming has long been exalted for its health benefits. Thanks to buoyancy, it is a great workout that reduces impact and stress placed on the body that can arise with activities like running. Swimming uses the large muscle groups, strengthening the whole body. Regular swimming provides better blood-sugar control and reduces the risk of diabetes. It also improves lung capacity, brain and heart function, and even flexibility. In children, learning to swim has shown an increase in motor skills while combining physical activity and fun.

hen selecting a backyard pool, technology probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Fortunately for homeowners, advancements in this industry now allow for a plethora of unique options. A recent flurry of innovation has given rise to moveable pool floors — systems that solve many of the age-old problems associated with having an in-ground pool. Much more than simply a pool, these systems can create an entirely new outdoor lifestyle for homeowners of all ages. Moveable pool floors, hidden pools or invisible pools — as the trendsetters have labelled them — consist of a hydraulic system that raises and lowers the pool floor. When fully raised, the pool completely disappears, allowing for extra

space and added safety as the system can be locked with a key and pass code. The space becomes accessible only while supervised, reducing the possibility of accidents. Backyard pools are often seen as a hazard, requiring fences and safety protocols. According to Statistics Canada, children are five times more likely to drown in private pools. The variable depths of this new pool system allow for swimming fun for all ages and skill levels, creating a shallow wading pool, a mid-depth pool for those just learning to swim, or a full depth pool perfect for swim and play. The invisible pool also allows people with mobility concerns, whether from age or disability, to enjoy swimming again. By removing the barrier of climbing in and out of the pool, these swimming enthusiasts

HOUSE & HOME

The true beauty of an invisible pool is the urban development factor. In densely packed cities and suburban areas, homeowners often need to make a choice between having a pool, yard or entertainment space. With the invisible pool, you can go from swimming in the morning to enjoying a deck or patio for a party in no time at all. It provides homeowners with the best of both worlds in a small yard. Often clad in tile or a composite decking, this floor provides the ultimate entertainment space. The application has even been extended to indoor pools in both commercial and residential settings, so owners can enjoy the benefits of swimming and added square footage year round. Certain hidden pool systems even open via a sliding mechanism moving under a deck panel, allowing for a turf covering to create the ultimate grassy oasis for pets and kids. The limits to this new backyard technology are as endless as your imagination. With the right company and engineer, an invisible pool can be any shape, size and material. Homeowners can also incorporate a number of luxury items to make their cutting-edge pool the envy of the neighbourhood, including musical massage, a current for lap swimming, LED projection for a therapeutic light show, even fountain or fire pit elements. When selecting the right pool, it is important to appraise your lifestyle and future plans. Whether finishing off a dream home or making an investment in the property ladder, the right pool system can add value to any home.

BUSINESS

PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD By Brook Thalgott

Today, businesses face far more risks than in the past, such as business interruption, cash flow and liquidity, reputation, regulatory changes and weak economic climate. Now, businesses face another growing threat — cyber risk. No company, no matter how big, is immune to issues from the virtual world. Just ask Sony Pictures and Target. Both suffered massive security breaches that affected both customers and employees alike. In today’s connected world, businesses must be aware of the risks posed in cyberspace, and how to protect against threats.

102

FineLifestyles

EDMONTON

BUSINESS

A

ccording to the Globe and Mail, cyber attacks have already hit more than one third of Canadian businesses. Gaining access via anything connected to the Internet, these well-funded and sophisticated criminal enterprises will attack businesses of any size and cause serious damage. Because the risk is constantly evolving, and the legal system is usually playing catch-up to technology, businesses have to protect themselves from all angles. With smaller businesses (less than 100 people) often the target, it really isn’t the massive multinationals alone that need to worry. While cyber risk insurance can help, it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. Cyber risk needs to be addressed across the whole business. An enterprise cyber risk management strategy is a must for any business these days, and senior management needs to be front and centre in planning and implementation. Where the IT department was the gatekeeper, now the whole business needs to be aware of the risks presented by cyber crime. First, businesses need to address what exactly is at risk from cyber attacks. It may be customer information, proprietary information on products or services, or communications between employees. The big question to ask is what will a hacker find valuable if they get in? The risk isn’t just financial — it’s reputational. When Sony Pictures

was hacked in 2014, they not only lost money over the release of the film The Interview, they also suffered serious reputational damage by the leak of sensitive emails between senior executives. Businesses must ask what needs to be protected and why. It’s not just senior management that needs to be involved in the development of a cyber risk strategy. A strategy should assess the current plan and practices and where improvements are needed, determine a monitoring process and what the procedures are if attacked. From the top down, the whole organization plays a part in keeping the business protected. Employees need to be educated about their responsibilities in minimizing risk, with a robust policy and compliance guidelines. Internal and external networks need to be assessed on an ongoing basis, with full knowledge of who has access to what and where everything is located. A well-planned and executed cyber risk strategy will help your business become cyber resilient. As the world becomes more and more connected, the opportunities for businesses grow — as do the risks. While we’re often prepared for the traditional business threats, we may neglect the ones that come from our connectivity. However, with a robust, well-planned and executed strategy, cyberspace risks can be mitigated.

f you’re from the big metropolis, you may find life too slow here. Even though Sherwood Park has enough people to be Alberta’s seventh largest city, its cosy charm makes it feel more like a small town, or better yet, the hamlet it is. Just east of Edmonton, life slows down considerably. So too does the traffic. And yet, Sherwood Park has everything one could want in a community. From fashion boutiques to meat shops, from major retailers to quaint restaurants, from bookstores to coffee shops, everything is at reach is within a short commute. In the summertime, there are nearly as many people on foot or bike as there are motorists, no doubt due to the more than average walking and bike trails. In a world where life is incredibly busy, with more disconnect than ever before, bedroom communities are desirable to foster a sense of belonging in families and neighbours. Sherwood Park is notorious for its friendly citizens. Some even go so far as to say there is an immediate sense that good people abound in Sherwood Park. With weekly farmers’ markets, Festival Place for concerts and community events, along with plenty of arenas, baseball diamonds and green space, one can not only live, but play in the ‘Park.’ Rather than a downtown, there is a town centre. Instead of traffic jams, there are meeting spots. And yet, within the serenity that comes from living in a hamlet, there is equal innovation and new development as seen in the local small businesses and many new subdivisions. But perhaps what may be most alluring to future inhabitants of this community is the close proximity to nature. As such wildlife and horizons that stretch across the prairies are ne’er far. Go ahead, jump in the car and head east for lunch or a day on foot. Take in the culture that bleeds from the big city, support local Albertans or bring your camera and photograph the fowl. Sherwood Park is a destination unto itself.

Real estate deals were always a dinner table topic when I was growing up. It always appealed to me.

As a seller, it has to work for you financially; however, if you’re a buyer, it should be a purchase you fall in love with. When my clients say comments like “We couldn’t have done it without you,” that makes what I do so rewarding. FL: Outside of real estate, how are you involved in the Sherwood Park community?

I ‘am confident not only in the Sherwood Park market, but Edmonton and surrounding areas as well. People are concerned and they have every right to be. If one were to look at the numbers for Sherwood Park this year in comparison to 2014 we are

With that in mind, The Pan Tree offers courses in the evenings, twice weekly, in their state-of-the-art interactive kitchen. Led by local chefs and industry experts, both demonstrative and participatory courses are offered, Nelson explains. Cuisine classes focus on both regional and ethnic options, and technique classes offer thematic lessons like knife skills or pasta making, she says. “Our classes aren’t specifically basic or advanced, they’re pretty much meant for any skill level,” says Nelson, noting classes can fill up quickly. “Everybody is welcome, regardless of their experience in the kitchen!”

With Father’s Day around the corner, and barbeque season fast approaching, Nelson points to the Butchery and Beer class offered at The Pan Tree as a great introduction to grill season. Also coming up, Classic French is a course that offers the basics in a cooking style widely regarded as the crème de la crème. Beyond their classes, The Pan Tree also offers product demos each Saturday, where clients can try out new gadgets, sample delicious products, and learn more about some of the fabulous cookware and kitchen tools the store has to offer. It’s all about sharing the love of cooking, and the vast array of the products and techniques that make cooking even more enjoyable, Nelson expresses. “I like being able to help people, and I love to educate people,” she says. “If someone leaves the store knowing more than when they came in, then I feel like I’ve accomplished something.” The Pan Tree #550, 220 Lakeland Dr. Sherwood Park 780.464.4631 info@thepantree.ca www.thepantree.ca

herwood Park’s Lauren Willms and her mother, Sue Willms, have always loved to shop together. And they’ve always had a penchant for shoe shopping above all. These business partners do all their buying together for Modern Sole and have learned to pay close attention to their customers’ needs. “When we’re out buying, we know what our customers are looking for,” says Lauren. “We try everything on ourselves so we know how it fits. narrow foot or any other foot issue, we can guide you into the brands that will fit your feet.” It’s that customized buying that has been particularly fulfilling for Lauren and Sue. Often they heard about the difficulty people of finding tall boots that fit wide calves. Lauren says this has been the biggest eye-opener for them in the business. “Most boots in chain stores are made to fit one specific woman,” she says. “About 65 to 70 per cent of all

Many women got to wear tall boots for the first time. That was great to see.” Spring and summer footwear is in stock now at Modern Sole—and some styles are already sold out and being re-ordered. Their popular orthotic line, Vionic, which is podiatrist-designed, offers women both fashion and support. Vionic is one of the store’s most popular brands and works well for casual, dress or work wear. “Many ladies purchased this brand as a walking shoe for travelling,” says Lauren. “Then they came back for more because they loved them so much!” While Modern Sole is mainly a women’s shoe store carrying both big name and boutique brands, they also carry stylish handbags, accessories and jewelry.

They can order up to size 6X on request. When new customers come to Sheer Impulse, Penney starts by asking if they are looking for anything in particular. Many of them have not worn lingerie for years and feel overwhelmed by the selection. If they prefer to browse, they

are welcome to take their time. But Penney may help guide them by asking if they’re looking for lingerie in a certain colour. Once she finds out whether they’re looking for something more revealing or sexy or something to sleep in, she can give them some ideas and start a fitting room. “If the customers need to try on 20 outfits, they try 20 outfits,” she says. “We want to make sure every customer feels special.” Apart from women’s lingerie, the store carries a variety of massage oils and novelty items including CupCases, the perfect travel accessory for your underwire bras. Both of our spa estheticians are fully certified.” One of the products Murri is particularly proud of is the line Evo from Australia. “It’s completely free of additives and is as natural as you can get. It’s great for people with sensitivities.” All consultations are free, and Murri says they give honest opinions to their clients. “We want them to get the style they want, and don’t pressure clients to buy products they don’t need. the things that set us apart from some of the other bigger salons. People want to be heard; we work hard to make our clients feel comfortable.” Services in the day spa range from manicures and pedicures, to microdermabrasion and chemical peels. “Our skin suffers from the dryness in our environment. As we age, our skin no longer replaces cells the same way. In our 20s, our skin might replace cells every month, but might take 60 days once we are in our 40s. The result is our skin is not glowing anymore. Treatments help to exfoliate and restore that natural

glow, so skincare products will absorb better,” says Murri. “We all want to look younger! People are more in tune with themselves, physically and spiritually. Our spa services help clients to relax and enjoy the moment.” All services are by appointment, but Murri adds, “On our Facebook page, we offer a ’20 per cent off seat sale’ for same-day openings in the event of a cancellation. We may have one or two cancellations a day, so keep checking Facebook.”

Murri adds, “We have a cosy and comfortable atmosphere here. I know each customer and I am here for them, not the other way around. All our staff has the same goal. We go out of our way to recognize and remember each customer. It’s like coming home.” Tricho Hair Design and Spa 160–130 Broadway Blvd Sherwood Park 780.464.5561 /trichohairdesignandspa

On April 18, Tricho is having an open house, where clients can meet representatives from Cara, a premium and medical grade skincare line. The Love of Dance By: Kim Mannix Vermette Photos Jinsei Photographics

When Mary Anne Kuebler talks about dance, there is music in her voice. As owner of Sherwood Park’s reputable Dancefusion Academy of Dance, Kuebler has watched thousands of students, young and old, experience the fun and beauty of dance. It’s her job to train and develop dancers, but it’s also her joy.

T

o dance, or be in the business of dance, you have to have a passion for it,” says Kuebler. “It really is fulfilling and I feel grateful because I know not everyone can say that about their work.”

Kuebler took over ownership of the business in 2000, when there were about 100 students, and a handful of different dance classes to choose from. Now,

124

Dancefusion attracts 600-700 students per year to their beautiful 10,000 sq. ft. studio. They come from all over Edmonton and surrounding areas, some travelling an hour or more for the chance to work with the school’s roster of experienced and accomplished instructors. “I think what makes us appealing for people is we have so many dedicated instructors and are able to offer such

SHERWOOD PARK FEATURE

a wide variety of disciplines,” explains Kuebler. “We hire people who all excel in their own discipline, which makes the classes specialized and focused.” Helming Dancefusion’s tap instruction is Gail Ledger, a highly regarded teacher who has trained many of the area’s best tap dancers and instructors. Anne Marie Schotte, a gifted dancer and choreographer who’s worked throughout

Canada and the United States, runs the musical theatre classes. Richard Andries is one of the city’s most sought-after hiphop instructors who has worked with big-name artists such as Chris Brown, Ludacris and Shawn Desman. Kuebler’s daughter, Cally trained at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and was a member of Ballet British Columbia. Laurie Alston worked for years on various cruise ships as well as with Disney. This team of instruction brings a vast range of skills to Dancefusion as far as technique and experience. Dancefusion also offers instruction in ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, break dance, belly dance, burlesque, acro, pom and cheer. There are drop-in classes for adults and youngsters, as well as more intensive training for competitive dancers. The school also offers boys-only classes, and several pre-school or parent and tot classes, which are a great weekday option for stay-at-home-parents looking for something fun and active. “Children as young as a year and a half can start the classes with a parent, and those can be a great bonding opportunity for parents and children, as well as a chance to expose them to dance from an early age,” says Kuebler. The studio also offers a Power Program, which encourages dancers in all disciplines to learn from the foundations of ballet. The ballet power program is designed for the serious ballet student aiming for completion of their professional ballet exams. Kuebler is proud to sing the praises of the studio’s many talented and committed dancers. Dancefusion students routinely win at local and regional festivals, and many of their alumni have gone on to study at top ballet and dance schools, or work as professional dancers, performers and actors. But it’s not just about winning competitions, or training students for a career in dance. As Kuebler says, “We offer so much, there really is something for everyone.” Dancefusion Academy of Dance 225 65 Chippewa Rd., Sherwood Park 780.464.6963 www.dancefusionsp.com

HEALTH AND VITALITY The Natural Way By Kim Mannix Vermette Photos Jinsei Photographics

L

ed by Dr. Garry Schafer, a licensed naturopath for more than three decades, the dedicated doctors at Vital Health in Sherwood Park pride themselves on their ability to provide personal and attentive care to every patient. “We love the patients,” says Patty Halter, Vital Health’s office manager, and one of the first friendly faces patients meet when they arrive at the comfortable, casual clinic. “We truly believe the healing starts as soon as they walk through the door, and our doctors take the time to ask lots of questions, listen carefully and follow up to see how a patient is doing.” Many patients come to Vital Health because they’re feeling frustrated with persistent symptoms that seem to have no cause, or to find alternative treatment for common ailments. Halter notes there is frequently scepticism from new

132

FineLifestyles

patients, who can be seeking holistic treatments as a last resort. But just as often, once they’ve had a chance to meet with a doctor and get on a personalized treatment plan, they become proponents for the naturopathic approach. Working alongside Dr. Schafer are Dr. Nooreen Sumar and Dr. Lisa Clements, all of whom are certified through the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors and the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta. The varied educational backgrounds of each doctor, which includes undergraduate training in the sciences, as well as the naturopathic doctorate, ensures patients receive a knowledgeable, well-rounded approach to their treatment plan. Halter says sometimes patients, or potential patients, are unsure about the limitations of naturopathic treatment. They may think their ailments are too minor, or too complicated. However,

SHERWOOD PARK FEATURE

the Vital Health doctors routinely treat patients for everything from general fatigue to serious illnesses such as MS and cancer. In addition, skin ailments, digestive concerns, hormone imbalances and pain disorders can often be alleviated through the clinics various treatments, which includes nutrition counselling, vitamin and herbal supplements, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine as well as homeopathy. At the very heart of Vital Health’s philosophy is the idea that treating the symptoms of any disorder or illness is not enough. In order to restore balance and heal the body, the root cause of a patient’s pain is of the utmost importance to the doctors. As Halter explains, it’s an unfortunate truth that many of the clinic’s patients don’t remember what it’s like to feel healthy or pain-free.

“We always do our best to diagnose what’s really going on, so the healing can begin, and when it works and patients feel well again — well there’s no better feeling,” says Halter. What attracts so many patients to the clinic is Dr. Schafer’s years of experience, as well as the expertise of the other doctors, but also Vital Health’s wide array of diagnostic tools. Halter notes the clinic operates an Electrodermal Analysis machine, the machine is a painless, safe diagnostic tool that uses electrical pulses to detect areas of concern in the body. The doctors are also able to analyze results brought into the clinic from standard diagnostic tools such as blood tests and ultrasounds, x-rays or CT scans, in addition to the alternative methods, such as allergy testing, salivary hormone testing and heavy metals testing. This multifaceted approach to diagnosis allows the doctors to gather as much

information as they can about a patient’s body, which makes the diagnosis more accurate and the treatment plan more patient-specific. Sometimes results happen quickly, and sometimes they take more time, but Halter says one of the things patients routinely comment on throughout their treatment is the personal attention from the doctors. “The other day we had a patient who just couldn’t believe the doctor called him at home to check in and see how he was doing,” explains Halter. “He was amazed, and I was happy to say that’s just how we do things here.” Vital Health Naturopathic Clinic #136 – 2755 Broadmoor Blvd., Sherwood Park 780.449.4047 www.vitalhealthclinic.ca

Spinning a Passion into a Career

P

aul Burgess, owner of Mud, Sweat and Gears, still remembers one of the first times he walked into a bike store. He left the store dismayed at how the shop owner made him feel stupid over the few questions he had about his bike. “I didn’t know it at the time but it was one of the most influential experiences of my life,” says Burgess. “I couldn’t believe as a customer I had been made to feel so insignificant.” Fast-forward 40 years; Burgess’ mantra to his staff is to be inviting, accommodating

and helpful toward customers. “I don’t want anyone to have the experience I had. People come here for a fun experience,” he comments. There are no training programs or fancy hiring processes at Mud, Sweat and Gears. “There’s no better training program than using product,” Burgess explains. “The sales floor is the best recruiting platform for us. We see their enthusiasm and how excited they are to be using the product; what better person to sell it?”

SHERWOOD PARK FEATURE

Staff retention has been one of the strongest points of Mud, Sweat and Gears. A majority of the staff has been on board for more than five years and a handful remain since opening in 2006. “We have all become like family. It’s a great atmosphere to spend your day with active youth and watch as their roles within the business expand,” states Burgess. In 2014, a second location opened in Spruce Grove offering the same commitment to product, service and experience.

In June of 2011, Burgess received a call from the Make-A-Wish Foundation asking if he knew of anyone who could build a backyard skateboard park for a young boy. “At first I had no idea, but then it occurred to me that some of the staff had built their own small ramps,” he recalls. “A small group of us went out to meet the family and float the idea of a few of us building it for them. My biggest fear was that we were going to get in over our heads but the crew totally took ownership of the project. In less than two months the family’s backyard had been transformed into the most amazing skateboard park. It was one of the most rewarding experiences we’ve ever been lucky enough to be a part of.” That year, the business was honoured by the Chamber of Commerce for its community work, and it continues to host events to raise funds for the MakeA-Wish Foundation, to date raising over $40,000. What started as a hobby 30 years ago in his laundry room has slowly spun into not

only a business but a way of life. Burgess attributes his success to a lot of hard work and a passion for what he does. “Who doesn’t remember how exciting it was as a kid to get a new bike? We get to be a part of that every day; it’s awesome!”

The physical and emotional benefits of pole dancing are myriad and diverse. “Many of our students come to class with the goal of losing weight,” says owner and instructor Chantelle Beasley. “They stay because their confidence and excitement increases as they master new tricks.” “When I first walked in,” explains Mary, a student at Aradia, “I was worried that I wouldn’t fit in and wouldn’t be able to

do the workout because of my weight. But the extremely supportive workout environment, the focus on fun and the attitude from the school that all women are sexy, no matter their body type, really motivated me to change my life.” Josh agrees. “When I first started out, I was worried about being male and how I would fit into a business for empowering women. But after my

first session I realized it wouldn’t be a problem; the instructors were excited to be there, enthusiastic and accepting of all. I have made great friends and have found pole and silks to be one of the best workouts.” Aradia keeps class sizes small so every student has their own pole and adequate individual attention. Classes are an hour long and each session lasts six weeks. Every class begins with a warm-up and a Pilates-based floor exercise before proceeding to pole techniques. Contortion classes are available to help students increase their flexibility. In addition, customized private and semi-private lessons can be arranged. Students have the option of attending additional practice sessions at the studio on the weekends or purchasing a pole for home work-outs, practice or a private performance for that special someone! Aradia Fitness not only sells poles, they also have an array of fitness gear, including shorts, shirts, capris and pants, as well as grip. In addition to classes, Aradia also hosts bachelorette and girls’ night out parties. Book a fabulously fun session of learning the basics of pole dancing or lap dancing for yourself and your favourite group of girlfriends. You will experience an enjoyable, entertaining and educational evening that will leave wanting to return and learn more. “Love this studio!! Wonderful instructors!” exclaims Candace. “I love how after an hour of a pole workout I feel like I can take on the world ... great confidence boost and I get to feel sexy while working out!” Increase your strength and selfassurance. Sign up today at Aradia Fitness for a pole dancing class full of fun, fitness and friends.

FLOAT your way to

WELLNESS By Courtney Tait Photos Phuwadet Ply Pas-arj

hen Laara Delain was in her 20s, a doctor told her that by the age of 30, she would be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Laara suffered from debilitating pain every day. Devastated by her prognosis, she was determined to find a path that would lead to healing. Fast-forward more than two decades and Laara says, “I haven’t had any arthritis symptoms for more than 20 years.” So what changed? Along with making alterations to her diet and practicing Kundalini Yoga, Laara discovered an alternative treatment that gave her complete freedom from pain: Float Therapy. First developed by Dr. John C. Lilly in the 1950s, floating consists of immersing yourself into a Sensory Deprivation Tank, typically for 90 minutes. The tank creates a weightless and lightless experience in which the brain is freed from processing external stimuli. 1,100 lbs of Epsom Salts are dissolved into skin-temperature water, enabling the user to float effortlessly, an experience akin to being in the womb. Floating is practiced in locations around the world, giving people a way to experience profound healing and relaxation. “It was an ‘aha moment’ the first time I tried it,” says Laara. “All the burning and aching slowly disappeared, and I began to feel whole again.”

In October of 2014, Laara opened Float Wellness, Sherwood Park’s first Float Therapy location. Float Wellness features three i-Sopod Float Tanks from the UK — each in a private room with its own shower — and has Registered Massage Therapists on staff. Imagine a float and massage combination for the ultimate in relaxation. Experienced Float Hosts will introduce new clients to the art of floating and answer any questions. The post-float lounge offers guests seating on a 1950s turquoise vinyl sofa, a library of books, water or tea and relaxing music. Along with relaxation and relief from aches and pains, float therapy offers a myriad of other benefits. One hour in the i-Sopod Float Tank is equal to four hours of sleep. Floating helps to eliminate fatigue and reset your clock from shift work and jet lag. Mental benefits include increased

motivation and productivity, as well as diminished depression, anxiety and fear. Float therapy is also beneficial for anyone with PTSD, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or for anyone recovering from an injury. Many athletes enjoy floating to help heal their sports-related injuries, and find they are able to manifest their goals via visualization when they are in the float tank. “Over the last decade, the speed of our lives has increased tenfold, and we are constantly bombarded by information,” says Laara. “As Joe Rogan, avid float guru says, ‘Everyone should be doing this!’ We need to slow down, relax

and heal our bodies and minds. Floating is not something you do just once, it’s an amazing therapy to incorporate into your lifestyle, like going to the gym or a yoga class.” Laara says guests emerge from their float therapy sessions with a post-float glow. “Everyone feels amazing after a float,” says Laara. “I am honoured to be introducing the art and science of float therapy to my community.” Float Wellness 108-85 CRANFORD WAY Sherwood Park, AB. 780.570.2222 info@floatwellness.ca www.floatwellness.ca

Koffee Korner is a family-owned franchise started by Charmaine’s brother in Ontario. She and Doug opened their Bonnyville store in April 2014 and followed with their Sherwood Park location this January, which has received a wonderful reception from the neighbourhood.

The pick and mix store allows customers the flexibility to try new flavours without investing in a whole box. “It’s a great way to try a new coffee or tea. People love the variety!” says Charmaine. “Here you can choose as many different types as you like of individual favourites. Business owners can choose a variety of their clients’ favourites for their next visit.

Your clients will feel very special knowing you remembered they prefer an organic fair trade blend and you have it on hand for them.” The store is always receiving new premium quality products in light, medium and dark roast coffees, chai lattes, Cafe Escapes pre-mixed products and much more. Koffee Korner sells Keurig machines in different sizes too, along with the filters. They also have a fantastic Italian-made Rivo machine that makes one-cup espressos, cappuccinos and lattes with a frother on the side. Other beverage accessories, like water bottles, Contigo mugs and flavoured
