here is much discussion over which Gucci developed the horsebit motif for the brand in 1953. Some attribute it to the founder himself, Guccio Gucci. Others attribute it to Guccio’s eldest son, Aldo Gucci, who was instrumental in expanding the family empire when he established offices in New York City — thus introducing the brand to an array of film stars and jet setters.

hen a customer came to The Pink Paire, looking for something to wear to her husband’s high school reunion, owner Angela Boyne listened carefully. “She was a stay-at-home mom,” says Boyne. “And she wanted something practical and plain that she could use again.”

oga is definitely top of mind in the world of fitness these days as a way to work out the kinks of every day life. More than the physical applications of the practice, yoga is a way of life. Although it is not known exactly when yoga first began, we do know it originated in India more than 5000 years ago. For many, yoga is a way to relieve stress and restore balance, but true yogis practice for reasons both on and off the mat. In fact, it is proven that yoga teaches its students to take slower, deeper breaths — a life strategy for remaining calm and staying ‘in the moment.’ Moreover, yoga increases a person’s ability to be in tune with his or her body, heart and environment. Yogis believe in taking care of their physical and mental selves, but also in taking care of the world in which they live. It is a language of respect that has beautiful benefits. “The success of yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships.” T.K.V. The Studio If you are new to the practice, there are many different facilities in which to try out a class. From civic offering to hot studios, earthy independents and posh places, yoga is affordable and accessible in a gamut of ways. In fact, for those less brave, yoga DVDs or online videos are a comfortable approach to doing downward dog in you living room.

The Class Types Of course, there are many types of classes growing constantly with popularity and creativity. Yoga has been blended with Pilates, ballet and even resistance training involving weights. To keep traditional yogis from running for the hills, here is a look at some of the more popular types of convention yoga.

Ashtanga and Power Yoga This type of practice focuses on six established and strenuous pose sequences. Not recommended for beginners, this yoga is for those seeking a challenge.

Bikram Practiced in a very hot room — nearly 105 degrees with 40 per cent humidity — Bikram is named after inventor Bikram Choudhury. Each class is a series of 26 basic yoga postures, each performed twice.

Hatha A perfect entrance into yoga, Hatha is one of six original branches of yoga. Hatha encompasses nearly all varieties of modern yoga and is flow free, meaning a slower, gentler class.

Kundalini An invigorating series of poses meant to fire up the body and strengthen the mind, Kundalini yoga is an awakening practice meant to draw out your inner warrior.

Iyengar Named after purist yogi B.K.S. Iyengar, this style of yoga is ideal for the injuryprone, as it incorporates props such as blocks, straps, harnesses and incline boards to help students ease into poses.

Yin Yoga The perfect way to finish off a long day at the office, a stressful project or a week spent editing a beautiful magazine, Yin is a quiet, meditative yoga practice also called taoist yoga.

The Purpose Whatever your reason, yoga is a vehicle to better health, spiritual satisfaction and a long pause in shavasan. Yoga is very accepting and non-judgmental; it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. So put on some comfy clothes, grab your mat and lean into wellness, one stretch at a time.

2015 Alzheimer’s Pro-Am Face Off Hockey Tournament EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS By Tobie Hainstock Photos Tom Untergasser

H

ockey fans will agree, it was the hockey fundraiser of the season. The Alzheimer’s Pro-Am Face Off Hockey Tournament took place from April 10 to 12 in Edmonton and Leduc. A total of 23 teams participated, each required to raise a minimum of $25,000 in order to play making for a total of 350 players and 30 NHL alumni. Players included former Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars from the playoff series in the late 1990s. This year’s lineup featured

such legends as Mike Modano, Owen Nolan, Fernando Pisani, Cory Cross, Curtis Joseph, Jamie Langenbrunner and more. The event surpassed expectations by raising a gross amount of $1.28 million and clearing approximately $700,000 for Alzheimer’s research. “It was another great event and we want to give a huge thank you to our committee, volunteers, team captains and players. None of this would have been possible without them,” expresses Jessica Twidale of Alzheimer Society Alberta and Northwest Territories.

Last year’s funds were allocated among the following valuable research programs: • Dr. Sabine Gilch, University of Lethbridge — AARP Young Investigator Research Grant, which will investigate how to prevent protein clumps from causing brain cell death. • Dr. Majid Mohajerani, University of Alberta — AARP Regular Research Grant, which uses advanced imaging techniques to investigate the effect of small strokes on cognitive


impairment in sporadic forms of Alzheimer’s disease. • Dr. Andriy Kovalenko, University of Calgary — AARP Regular Research Grant, which will use computer modeling tools to design new drugs to stop the formation of clumps, both inside and outside of brain cells that cause Alzheimer’s disease. • Dr. Shigeki Tsutsui, University of Calgary — AARP Regular Research Grant, which will use advanced imaging technology to identify disease-specific signs for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease from patients’ blood samples. • Dr. Satyabrata Kar, University of Alberta — AARP Regular Research Grant, which will determine the effects of the accumulation of plaques around nerve cells of the brain in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The event was such a resounding success; new and exciting plans for next year’s tournament are already underway. The 2016 Alzheimer’s Face Off will be held April 29 to May 1 at the Westin Hotel and the Terwillegar Recreation Centre in Edmonton. Online registration for next year’s event is available now at www.alzheimersfaceoff. ca. Team captains are asked to register their teams before players join the teams. Players, register today before increased registration fees come into effect later in the year. The goal is to have 28 teams participating next year. Finding Cause and Treatment for Chronic Headaches

M

ost of us have experienced headaches at one point in our lives and can relate to the pain and discomfort they cause. Headache symptoms vary greatly by individual. For example, migraine headaches are often completely debilitating, whereas other headaches are less intense but might occur daily. As a naturopathic doctor, I am interested in determining the cause of your headaches, so instead of simply managing the symptoms, you can prevent them altogether. Listed below are some common causes of headaches. Other potential serious causes exist, therefore it’s advisable to see a medical professional to have a full assessment.

Histamine Headaches are sometimes caused by constriction or dilation of blood vessels in the head, altering blood flow and creating a throbbing or pressure kind of pain. Excess histamine in the body can bind to the blood vessels, causing these changes. Determining the cause of excess histamine and what will break it down is important for relieving histamine-related headaches. Oxalates Oxalates are created in the body as a normal part of metabolism. They are a waste acid that should be easily eliminated but, if not, can accumulate and cause headaches. Since the accumulated oxalates form crystals, they often cause sharp, stabbing pain or pressure. Helping your body to eliminate these crystals can be an important step in preventing headaches. HOrmOnal Many women experience headaches in conjunction with their menstrual cycles. These headaches are a result of the shift in hormones, estrogen in particular, during the cycle. The birth control pill and hormone replacement therapy can also trigger headaches or migraines. Supporting the liver to properly metabolize these hormones will balance the ratios between estrogen and progesterone, as well as the different forms of estrogens, helping reduce hormonally related headaches. magnesium Deficiency Magnesium is a mineral that acts as a natural muscle relaxant in the body and

is used in large amounts during times of stress to help the body accommodate for the stress response. Among other things, it helps regulate blood pressure, manage blood sugars and settle anxiety. If deficient, magnesium supplementation can improve headaches by relaxing the blood vessels, which regulate blood flow in the head and by relaxing the muscles of the neck, jaw and shoulders. fOOD intOlerances Food intolerances or sensitivities are unlike allergies in that they are caused by a different type of immune response. espite the known health risks associated with smoking, cigars remain a luxury item enjoyed for a variety of reasons. Like expensive vintages of champagne, cigars often mark celebratory occasions. Fine wine, the rarest gemstones, luxury automobiles and cigars suggest cachÊ. They are yardsticks in social circles, often evoking an air of wealth and power alongside a supple leather chair, life aboard a yacht or membership in a private club. And while tobacco aficionados can spend upwards of $50 per cigar, the most expensive on the market comes with a $1,150 price tag — the Gurkha Black Dragon. Gurkha is known to be one of the most famous brands of luxury cigars in the world, enjoyed by celebrities, leading government officials and royalty. Their creative packaging has included handcarved bone chests and their products can be purchased exclusively at selected cigar shops worldwide. So what constitutes a great cigar? PROCESSING A great deal of time and skill go into making each one. A cigar can take up to three years from the time a tobacco seed is planted until a cigar is rolled. Like anything coveted, a great smoke appears expensive from the packaging to the wrapper. NURTURING Careful and constant monitoring is required to assess, grade and sort tobacco based on its colour, size and burning characteristics. With carefully grown, assessed and selected tobacco, a “torcedore” or master cigar-maker constructs the innards of a cigar, keeping in mind proper construction leads to proper burning. Too much tobacco can restrict airflow, while not enough can lead to a harsh burnt rather than artful taste. In fact, cigar tasting draws many parallels with wine, tea, coffee; variation in climate or soil can affect tobacco, too. Like wine, tea and coffee, tobacco flavours can range from spicy to sweet, peppery to earthy, woody to nutty, fruity to chocolatey and more. Cigar flavour is all personal preference, often enhanced with a beverage. T

here is often confusion regarding what constitutes a malt whisky. Whether you are discussing single, blended or 100% blended malts — also known as vatted whisky — there are differences. Many people are familiar with popular blends such as Johnnie Walker Red and Black Label. Often people recognize single malts such as Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. But not as many are familiar with 100% blended malts such as Compass Box or Johnnie Walker Green Label, the only non-blend Johnnie Walker.

Understanding the type of grain used in distilling and the distillation technique itself are fundamental to identifying each of the whisky categories. Single malt whisky distillation uses three ingredients: malted barley — partially germinated barley containing high amounts maltose sugars — water and yeast. When combined they create a weak form of beer called wort, which is fermented in giant tubs called washbacks. Once fermentation begins to slow, after about three days, the wort is pumped into pot-shaped copper stills and brought to a boil. The fumes rise and come into contact with copper-plated chimneys that cool it back into a liquid and remove harmful chemical compounds known as esters. The output is recirculated into the pot stills for a second, and sometimes third time to increase the alcohol content and remove all impurities. The spirit is then transferred into oak barrels to age for a minimum of three years. Once the master blender determines the whisky has reached peak maturity, several casks are married to obtain the flavour profile he or she desires. Single malt does not mean single cask, which must be specified. Rather, single malt means the whisky originates from a single source or “distillery”.

Blended whisky originated with Andrew Usher who took young, rough, malted pot-still whisky and blended it with other grain alcohols that were produced at his family-owned, “continuous-still” distillery in Edinburgh. Continuous or column stills offered a lighter, more elegant spirit than pot stills, but sacrifice flavour and complexity. Blending the two styles together resulted in a lighter, elegant, reasonably complex spirit with a very short aging period. Grain alcohols derived from rye, corn and wheat are all used in varying degrees to achieve desired flavour profiles. To this day, more than 90% of Scottish distilleries’ output is sent to blenders at exactly three years of age. This affords distilleries to maintain a healthy cash flow. 100% Blended Malts are a hybrid of the two styles. Only malted barley spirits from pot stills are used, but they originate from two or more separate distilleries. For example, the previously mentioned Johnnie Walker Green Label marries single malts from the following distilleries: Talisker, Linkwood, Cragganmore and Caol Ila. No other grain spirit is used. Further, they put an age statement of 15 years on Johnnie Walker Green Label, meaning the youngest whisky used has been aged in oak barrels for 15 years. Together they longed for their own company but were careful to gauge when they had enough experience and wisdom to make their move. Setting up shop was an exciting move for Laura and her staff. After caring for children at home for 15 years, the mother of five asked the founder of SweetLegs about doing home parties. She then created the home party position that more than 120 women across Canada now hold. When her business took off, the city informed her she could no longer sell clothes out of her home. She had to open a store. “It really shows there was a need for this kind of store in St. Albert,” says Laura. “Our boutique gives a high-end feel without high-end prices. It’s a place that makes every woman feel comfortable and better about herself.” For the littlest customers, the boutique’s play area is the greatest attraction. Customer Jessica Penner says on her recent visit her two-and-a-half year old daughter didn’t want to leave Sweet Boutique. “She wanted to keep ‘cooking’ me things in the play kitchen,” says Jessica. “She adores going to the shop which makes the shopping experience so much more relaxing!”

ord travels fast when the food is good; that’s what has happened in Edmonton. The city’s Careit Urban Deli, opened by chefs Cameron Jordan and Louis Hamel in January 2008, received an overwhelmingly positive response from customers for its convenient and healthy meals. They’ve continued to grow the business with a store in Crestwood in 2009 and another in St. Albert in November 2014. “The reception to the Careit Urban Deli has been super positive,” says Jordan. “People from other areas keep asking when we’re going to open up in their neighbourhoods.” Careit Urban Deli is hoping to open a fourth and final location this fall in downtown Edmonton’s Fox Towers.

After Jordan and Hamel graduated from a two-year culinary arts program at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, they each spent more than a decade working for hotels, restaurants and country clubs. They noticed many busy families with working parents and children in extra-curricular activities didn’t have a lot of time for cooking. “We wanted to purchase local meat from Edmonton-area farms and create a deli where people could get high-quality, locally-sourced meals they can buy and take home,” says Jordan. They called it Careit Urban Deli because chefs at all their locations put care into each meal they prepare. Urban Deli refers to the fact they are meeting the needs of modern families in every neighbourhood where they operate. The carrot motif on their signage brings it all together to reflect the freshness of their food.

Jordan and Hamel designed a menu for Careit Urban Deli that features delicious sandwiches such as like the Chipotle Chicken and Turkey Cranberry Mayo and favourite soups such as like the comforting Mulligatawny and exotic Butternut Squash Banana. But each Careit Urban Deli has different daily offerings tailored to their neighbourhood’s favourites. The deli uses freshly baked bread from the Portuguese Family Bakery and jams and mustards made by The Jam Lady. They make all their own salad dressings (Greek and Caesar are the most popular), and desserts such as the famous Careit Cookie with oatmeal, carrot and chocolate chips and their fabulously moist banana bread. Customer Myra Masdrilejo says, “I love the soups, especially the beef barley and the salmon chowder. The Vietnamese sandwich is an excellent option. And I

always fall for the banana bread when I grab lunch.” Catering is also available and becoming a growing part of the Careit Urban Deli’s business. Casual meetings of up to 30 people can order soups, salads and sandwiches for their groups to be picked up or delivered. If you’re looking for a quick and easy dinner to take home, they have a wonderful selection of comfort foods such as shepherd’s pie, butter chicken, chicken pot pie, beef stroganoff, turkey chili and other meals you can pop in the oven or microwave that same night. Many are vegetarian and gluten-free, too. Some customers come in five or six days a week for meals or they pick up three or four entrees to keep in the fridge. Nothing is sold frozen at Careit Urban Deli. “Our customers say our meals taste like home cooking,” says Jordan. “And they love it that we get to know them and what they like as well as the fact that we can tell them exactly what is in every dish we cook.” If you’ve finally pulled out the barbecue and are looking for some flavourful cuts of meat, Careit Urban Deli has an amazing selection of local chicken, pork and beef that have been raised with no hormones or antibiotics. veryone knows a sister is a forever friend. What’s more special is the unique connection that comes with this relationship. When those sisters are identical twins, the bond is even stronger.

Raised around hairstylists, Cameron and Chiu grew up with a love for hair and fashion and a long-time dream of going into business together someday. “We love hair and can’t think of anything else we’d rather do,” says Chiu.

The beauty of Mirror Image Hair and Body Studio is it combines the expertise of two highly talented stylists with the family bond of identical twin sisters. Tracy Cameron and Treena Chiu have been in business for more than 17 years in an industry they both love.

Close in every way, Cameron explains some of the similarities in their lives. “We live side by side, we love to dress the same and we both have two children who are close in age.” Although Cameron was married six years earlier than Chiu, they share the same wedding date.

Mirror Image Hair and Body Studio is a uniquely designed facility incorporating the rustic feel of the Banff and Canmore areas. The studio is located underground, below one of the sister’s homes and has its own separate entrance for privacy and convenience. “Many people walk in and immediately sense the warmth and cosiness of the studio,” notes Cameron. all the details earlier discussions had revealed as being the most important. Heidi was involved up until the approval of this sketch. After that, Carmen provided a digital computer matrix design for Neil before a top Canadian goldsmith began its creation.

“When Heidi came in with pictures of rings she liked, we looked at them and discussed the elements that had caught her eye. I explained the particular qualities of morganite and gave them advice based on practicality and functionality,” says Carmen. After 30 years in the industry, she knows timeless.

“I’m still amazed at how Carmen was able to design exactly what I was thinking!” exclaims Heidi. “The process was not only easy and stress-free but fun and exciting. Carmen is not only an artist but a genius designer who was able to create one piece of art from my multiple sources of inspiration.”

For their next meeting, the couple examined several morganites Carmen had brought in for cut, colour and brilliance, choosing their favourite. She then sketched a ring, which included

PrePare, PrePare, PrePare A detailed renovation plan will help keep you on budget and on time. Set out a specific agreement with your contractor before the work begins. You should be able to see on paper how your renovation is going to play out before it ever begins. Don’t jumP the gun on Purchases Don’t buy materials or appliances until you’ve completely planned out your renovation and all measurements have been taken. Online sales can be tempting, but that great deal on a 24-inch dishwasher isn’t going to save you any money if your entire space has to be redesigned because you only had room for an 18-inch model. Work out your timeline Contractor approximations are simply that, so sitting down and working out a detailed timeline before the reno starts will help keep your contractor on track and yourself on budget. Don’t ignore the issues When you pull down walls or rip up floors, there’s a good chance you’re going to be surprised by something you find, especially in an older home. This might mean an unexpected cost up front, but it will save you tons of money in the long run. Don’t cut corners It’s always better to go the extra mile and do it right the first time. Hiring competent people to do the job, buying quality materials, and taking the time to complete all the necessary steps is key.

DeciDe on your Diy I love it when I encounter ambitious homeowners who want to get dirty and take part in their renovation. But projects like cabinet installation, complicated tile work or skilled carpentry exceed the limit of a typical DIY project and can reduce the value of your home if done incorrectly. My advice? Involve yourself heavily in the demo — it’s the funnest part anyway! If you really want to make a statement with non-representational art, go gigantic. Not only will it be much easier to take notice of the piece but it will also help you define an area or draw people from one space into another. For those who really don’t like a lot of busyness in a room, oversized graphic art may be perfect. By pairing it with just a few key items, the art truly gets to be the star and the overall space will not be overwhelming. Reid says mural or oversized pieces can have quite an impact and create a lot of interest, but they have to be treated individually. “They’re site specific,” she says. “But they have to have enough space around them so they don’t look like they’re crowded in.” Where to Find art Whether you’re looking for a piece that makes a huge statement, stands alone or makes up part of a gallery, finding art that speaks to you will usually take some time and effort. If you would like something original, look in cafés that display the work of local artists and photographers. Visit art galleries and consider renting a piece you like before purchasing it. Look online, in markets and at art auctions. Limited edition prints may be more affordable and there are all kinds of sources for reproductions and prints. An enormous statement piece doesn’t always have to mean spending big bucks. Simply framing something inexpensive, like a map or even blueprints, can be just as artful as something from an art gallery. There’s a lot of talent out there, and some of it may be yours. To describe Kelly Lovell as energetic is an understatement. Yet, it seems a perfect descriptor for the 22-year-old entrepreneur who already has a resume that rivals those of some of the most successful professionals in the country.

T

he Waterloo, Ont. native is CEO of Lovell Corporation, The Kelly Effect, My Effect and Motivation Minders, as well as founder of My Clean City and executive producer and host of YOU Effect, a global youth powered media network featuring a celebrity web series and Rogers TV show. Her mission is to connect youth, business and community, making positive changes for the world. When asked about her typical day and how she finds time to fit everything in, the gregarious Lovell laughs and says she starts early and doesn’t sleep much. “My work is the majority of my life because I love what I do,” she says. It’s clear Lovell really does have a passion for her job — or jobs — and it’s not one that comes from a desire to be rich or powerful. Lovell’s philosophy for her life is the same as her philosophy for work; you need to find what makes you happy and do it with all your heart.

Lovell speaks to audiences about unlocking their potential, following their dreams and not letting obstacles such as youth or inexperience stand in the way of doing what they love. Some of this may sound familiar and cliché, but she understands the importance of remembering these things, and delivers the message speaking from her own unique experience. She’ll tell you there’s really nothing extraordinary about her and the potential is there for everyone. “It’s so disheartening to hear young people say ‘I can’t do this,’ and that’s the end of it. I want to bring awareness that if I can do this, they can too,” she says.

She says the award she’s most proud of is her silver Stevie award for young entrepreneur of the year for women in business. “It was an international nomination that included people in 22 nations, so to be recognized beyond the Canadian business world was exciting,” says Lovell.

Lovell explains it was never her intention to become an entrepreneur and poster girl for youth empowerment in Canada. In fact, when she first enrolled in university it was to pursue sciences and medicine. But once she realized she had an important message to share and that people appreciated hearing it, one streak

She is quick to say even if she never won a single award, she would still be just as passionate about her goals, but the recognition is humbling. The accolades have the added benefit of making her entrance into boardrooms of the business world a little easier, where a youthful voice can sometimes serve as an obstacle.

“Every talk I do, I hang back to talk to people because it’s in hearing those stories of what they’ve overcome, or how they’ve been inspired, that I get inspired too. It’s then I’ll learn something truly meaningful.” Despite this, Lovell is consistently invited to speak to and advise businesses about ways to engage youth — both as employees and customers. Lovell says the common tips she gives to businesses on how to engage the “me generation” or “generation Z” are meant to help corporations realize young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today. Lovell says the first point to remember when working with youth in business is to give them a voice: “They need space to have their ideas heard, so let them speak at a meeting. Let them share their thoughts.” While it’s the tradition to look at youth as the voices of inexperience, and therefore not as relevant as seasoned employees, Lovell says they should instead be seen as voices of ingenuity. “Embracing that creativity is so important. In youth, we’re not yet jaded and still daring enough to ask: ‘Why is the world the way it is?’ “ She says contrary to the notion that the “me generation” is all about selfishness and materialism, many youth are most interested in opportunities that help them learn and develop. “When given the opportunity, they really value personal development and growth over monetary reward.” Lovell loves to talk about youth, but she is still most inspired talking to and with youth. She says she always welcomes the opportunity to connect with her audience members or young people in the community.
