s a two-time Grey Cup champion and middle linebacker, Saskatchewan Roughrider’s Shea Emry is someone whose professional role is one which very much aligns with traditional Western notions of masculinity, requiring him to be physical, strong, aggressive and decisive. As a team leader, it is Emry’s job to make sure the defense is organized when they are on the field. He must understand each player’s style of play and be able to interpret their movements quickly and accurately. It may be surprising that the ways in which Emry prepares to fulfill his hypermasculine role each game day are ones which many consider feminine. “On game days, I do yoga and meditate to calm down. I need to be calm enough to make quick decisions on the field.” As a child growing up in Richmond, BC, Emry was bullied. In a world where boys and men were taught not to reveal their emotions, Emry buried his. Luckily for him, as a gifted athlete, he was able to channel a great deal of his anger and energy into football. However, this wasn’t always enough. Full of repressed emotions, Emry suffered bouts of depression. When a concussion in 2011 left him confined to a darkened room for three months, the depression returned. This time, however, Emry decided to tackle the problem head on. Together with partner Devon Brooks, he founded The Wellmen Project, an organization devoted to helping men learn to express their emotions and vulnerabilities. “Wellmen is about self-care and owning your emotions,” explains Emry. “The prevailing perception of masculinity, as well as the social conditioning pertaining to it, are inherently restrictive to the evolution of men and perpetuate the predominant stigmatization of mental illness. Wellmen is after systemic socio-cultural change by challenging the limiting belief systems around what it really means to be a man.”

The early 21st century is a time of transition. Gendered norms are being challenged like never before. Boundaries are becoming more fluid, more flexible. There is a move away from rigid definitions of what it means to a man or a woman and a slow but steady shift towards seeing individuals first and foremost as unique and complex human beings.

While no two Wellmen adventures are exactly alike, they all combine radical outdoor adventures with previously feminized activities — of which a majority of men would be too guarded to partake in on their own — and encourage reflection and openness. The idea is to provide a communal environment in which men feel safe comfortable, masculine and able to confront their fears and explore deeper emotional issues while providing them with tools through which to do so. “Remaining silent and keeping your emotions in can become highly toxic,” warns Emry. “True strength lies in the ability to be vulnerable, to connect with your surroundings and be emotive. The Wellmen Project is about building connections — with your feelings, with others, with nature and the world around you.” Emry is to be commended for his efforts to improve men’s mental health. He admits his endeavours

After spending six seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, he was traded to the Toronto Argonauts last year. Then, on January 23, the Saskatchewan Roughriders acquired him in a trade involving defensive end Rick Foley. As a result, The Wellmen Project will now be pursuing adventures in the province. “At the moment, participation in the program is by invite only because of the attentiveness necessary when facilitating the intimate experiences,” explains Emry. “However, we want to expand and touch more lives. Our mission is the metamorphosis of manliness. We partner with thought leaders, utilizing cutting edge research to build radical experiences and opportunities that make a man’s personal evolution an adventure he never wants to end. We are currently looking for investors, partnerships and collaborators to help us do this. ddicts and their families should never give up on the struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Ardyth Wilson, an alcoholic in recovery, knows this from personal experience. She got sober 30 years ago, but lost her brother, Dwight, to his addictions at a young age. This was one of the catalysts that drove Wilson to open the Leipzig Serenity Retreat seven years ago in Wilkie, SK., making it the only privately run addictions centre in the province. The beautiful retreat, located in an 88-year-old former convent, provides a warm, welcoming environment for addicts in a non-institutional setting. All the staff at Leipzig Serenity Retreat are

either in recovery themselves or have family members who are. Their fiveweek program is based on the 12 step philosophical ideas used by more than 350 organizations. Ms. Wilson states, “Many centres only do steps one to three or one to five, but we do all 12 of the steps here.” Working on her own, it took Wilson almost one year to do the 12 Steps and it was a very painful process. At Leipzig Serenity Retreat, they explore all the steps in five weeks. “Years ago, you could find someone in AA who would help you go through the steps,” she says. “It appears to be harder for people to give the kind of time you need to get clean and sober nowadays. When they come here

and learn the steps, they’re more apt to continue with their recovery and build a healthy support network.” Also offered is one-on-one counselling, small group counselling, meditation sessions and an emotional wellness program designed at Leipzig Serenity Retreat. The emotional wellness classes explore self-esteem issues, negative core beliefs and biased expectations. This exploration helps clients redefine and examine their own morals, values and beliefs. Ms. Wilson attributes their high rate of success to the intimate relaxed setting and high counsellor-client ratio. The retreat can accommodate up to a

maximum of 18 clients at one time and has three full-time counsellors on staff as well as peer support workers. Last year, 127 clients 18 years old and up took part in their programs. A client named Sam says, “I could not have asked for a better serenity retreat. The grounds are beautiful and huge and the staff is amazing and very helpful. My five weeks went by so fast and the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions helped me through it. I appreciate all that you have done for me!” While it’s heartbreaking to see the damage already done to young addicts, Wilson is adamant they are not without

hope. “Watching people change is the most fulfilling part of our jobs,” she says. Anyone who requests a tour of the facility is welcome and staff members are happy to answer questions from addicts or their families about the program. For many of us the idea of rosé wine conjures up memories of putting a candle in a just finished bottle of Mateus or quaffing girly glasses of sickly-sweet white zinfandels. But time, tastes and wine techniques change, as do attitudes. When a decidedly masculine Hollywood titan like Brad Pitt starts producing a quality rosé wine, even the most skeptical of the macho men have to sit up and take notice.

osé is any wine with a colour spectrum from a barely perceptible pink to a pale red. Quality rosé wines have been produced for millennia in the South of France and it’s an accepted fact that the first wines ever produced were rosés. These wines are still the benchmark for quality; dry wines refreshing enough for a hot summer’s day but with enough depth and complexity to complement a wide array of food. Rosé wines have recently experienced a renaissance, which has driven up prices somewhat, but they still tend to be a very good value for money. Most rosé wines are created from red grapes by allowing a short maceration of the juice with the skins after crushing. The time of maceration ranges from a few hours for dark pigmented grapes to a day or two for lighter skinned varieties. This allows transfer of colour from the skins.

The juice is then pressed or drained away from the skins for fermentation. Some basic rosés are created by blending a small amount of finished red wine with white, but the hue and flavour of these wines are quite different, and generally not of the same quality. An exception to this would be rosé wines from champagne, where blending of red and white wines is sanctioned and strictly controlled. Rosé wines pair incredibly well with a diversity of food. From sushi to charcuterie to barbecue, there may not be a better all-purpose food wine. They are wines worthy of any social gathering or quiet summer sip in the backyard. A bit of sun, a bit of wine, some great food … what better way to bring some colour to our cheeks? Don’t forget to add a candle to the empty bottle for an added glow — and nostalgia.

History Re-opens its Doors at Burns’ House Bed and Breakfast

until 2003. It was in 2003 that Harry and Sheila Larson were shown the house by a friend who had lived in the house as a child.

Harry and Sheila felt sadness looking at the old and derelict heritage T. Eaton’s house. Occupied by raccoons and rodents, the roof was leaking and the

stone foundation was slowly collapsing under the house. Naively, Harry and Sheila felt it would be a good project to restore and dreamed of repurposing the house as a bed and breakfast. They felt it would have a happy and useful future. The house still belonged to the Burns family. A son, living in Toronto, owned and insured the house with a local insurance office, Ogema Agencies Insurance. Carol Peterson, owner of the insurance office, had originally shown the house to Harry and Sheila and provided them with contact information for Mr. Burns. Sheila contacted Mr. Cecil Burns, son of John Burns, and an agreement was reached for the purchase of the house for $3,000 after a short discussion regarding the purchase price. Sheila remarked on the derelict condition of the house, the leaky roof and general poor condition inside and out. Cecil needed a few moments to recall the “new” roof was put onto the house in the 1950s! The purchase price of the house was very reasonable, but soon costs began to add

up over the next few years. The house was moved, gutted to the 2x4 stud walls, reroofed, rewired, re-plumbed, re-insulated, added onto and only then did the house begin to take new shape. Slowly but surely, Harry and Sheila brought the old house back to life. Having taken many breaks along the way, in part to save money, but also to deal with the events of daily life, including the farm, to work, to relax a bit here and there, and also complete another renovation project or two. But finally, the house was complete. As a catalogue T. Eaton’s house, it was never an especially elegant or expensive house and it remains the same today. Fir floors and trim have been preserved and re-stained. It was the straightforward farmhouse of a working family. Every effort has been made where possible to restore that same ambiance while modernizing essential aspects. Additionally, found treasures and memorabilia from the house itself are on display.

Plans to exhibit local crafts and artisans are underway and also being considered are events such as musicals and dinner theatres. Harry and Sheila hope the house can come alive again as a bed and breakfast with accommodation for eight available in four rooms. From your editor’s kitchen Growing up, we have favourite comfort foods. Often, these are recipes that have been passed down through the generations. Here’s one such recipe from my kitchen to yours. Without fail, this square, which can only be described as “super yummy,” hits the home comfort spot, every time. Enjoy.

Butterscotch squares

Base:

1. Melt in a saucepan over medium heat: • 1/4 cup butter (or margarine) • 1 cup brown sugar Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool (don’t skip the cooling step otherwise the egg will scramble when added).

1. Melt in a saucepan over low heat: • 1/4 cup butter (or margarine) • 1/2 cup brown sugar Cook over low heat for about two minutes until mixture is creamy. Add 2 tbsp. milk and stir until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat.

2. Add: • 1 egg • 1 tsp. vanilla Beat with a spoon until smooth. 3. • • • •

Stir in: 3/4 cup flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 cup walnuts (if desired)

2. Add: • 1 cup icing sugar • 1 tsp. vanilla 3. Spread on slice and refrigerate or let cool at room temperature.

4. Pour mixture in 8x8 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Do not overbake.

he 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games may be a year away, but in the host city of Estevan, the buzz is already electric. The Summer Games will be the biggest multisport event in the province, with 1,800 athletes competing, 6,000 spectators expected and more than 2,000 volunteers required to pull it off. The event will also bring more than a million dollars of economic spin-off into the community by providing a lasting legacy of facilities and projects that will continue to benefit the area for years to come. “It is very exciting for Estevan and the support so far from the people and businesses in the community has been just phenomenal,” says Brian Senchuk who co-chairs the games with Brian Smith. The motto for the 2016 event is “Energizing the Games,” which encompasses both the spirit and the economic base of the community. The area is rich in oil and natural resources, and Estevan itself holds the delightful distinction of being the sunshine capital of Canada. “The tagline also sums up the enthusiasm of our committee and all the volunteers who are working to make these the best games they can be,” says Senchuk. Projects leading up to the games are helping to build the excitement, such as a multitude of fundraisers, volunteer recruitment, corporate sponsor signups and a contest co-sponsored by SaskMusic to find a new theme song that will be used for the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2016 and 2018 games.

The meshing of sports and culture is something that happens naturally when large sporting events such as this arrive in a community, but Smith says the host committee has planned several ways to showcase the rich cultural and heritage institutions in Estevan. “There is, of course, so much that goes into the week of the games, but we’re certainly kept busy leading up. This is the time when we want to remind people of the huge scope of these games and how exciting it can be to get involved in something that will positively impact our city for years to come,” says Smith. For sponsors, the committee has planned attractive recognition programs through extensive promotion of the games. There are also opportunities for sponsors to get involved in the development of new track and field facilities as well as other projects that will keep their businesses synonymous with the games for the next decade. The recruitment and training of volunteers is vital to the success of the games. In addition to the good feelings that come from being a part of an event as big as the Summer Games, Senchuk believes the volunteer spirit also becomes part of the legacy. “When people volunteer and see how much fun it is and the positivity it brings to themselves and to the community, they keep coming back and finding other ways to give,” he says. The Saskatchewan Games is the largest ongoing multi-sport competition in the province and attracts more than 2,000 participants. Southeast Connection is one of nine sport, culture and recreation districts in the province. Our organization assists with promotion of the Games and organizes Mission Staff, a team of dedicated volunteers that helps Team South East while at the Games. We encourage you to represent our district at the Games and become a part of Team South East! A History of Retail in Downtown Weyburn

n the early 1900s, Weyburn Hardware opened in the location now known as the Metro Centre. This store was operated by a number of different proprietors over the years. In the late ‘50s, the fine brick building and all of its contents were destroyed by a fire and was subsequently rebuilt in 1957 by the Guildner Brothers. In 1973, the store became the Metropolitan Store, serving customers on two levels until 1993. From 1995 to 2001, the location was home to Oasis Furniture. After sitting empty for two years, current owner John Georgacacos and Weyburn Coop realized the need for revitalization in downtown Weyburn. In 2005, it was reopened as the Metro Centre, anchored by Prairie Sky Co-op’s Expressions Ladies Fashions and Outdoor Adventures sporting goods on the main level.

McInnes, who studied to become an environmental technologist, says her love of re-using and recycling is in her blood. Her parents were collectors who looked for the utility in things before tossing them aside. It’s a tradition that continues with her husband and children now assisting with the business.

am often asked how I have been able to become successful in the variety of business ventures I have undertaken throughout my career. ILT — Invest Learn Teach — is a simple yet effective method for reaching unlimited success in your life. The idea is you invest in yourself through education (classroom, coaching, reading,

webinars and conferences). You then convert that education into action (working toward your objective). Once you have succeeded at your goal, you take that education and experience and share it with others. When you have accomplished what you set out to do, you begin again. How have I applied the “Invest Learn Teach” method to my career? The ILT method has followed me through my career and made it possible for me to not only succeed at several goals and passions, but to also support a lot of people in making a lot of money. My journey really started when I began working in mutual funds. Throughout my career as a certified financial planner, I obtained a wealth of education and experience with regard to investing. When I decided to shift my expertise exclusively into real estate, even though

I was no longer using my previous education or experience the same way, it never ceased to provide me with value. My investment background helped me navigate and speak the new language. It also expedited the steep learning curve in front of me. Once I combined that with my determination and willingness to continue advancing, it did not take me long to succeed. In five short years, my husband and I went from two properties to 302. During that time, we not only learned how to invest in real estate, we learned how to invest in real estate using other people’s money. We became skilled at selecting quality property, managing that property’s needs and providing a profitable rate of return for not only ourselves, but for our investors as well. When I think back to my decision to shift my professional focus to real estate, I can see how far I have come. I have

learned so much since those first few real estate courses. I am more confident. I have more control over my life and that provides me with the freedom I need to start the ascent into the next phase of my development as a wealth coach. Coaching allows me to share the value of my experience with others through group training. Becoming a wealth coach was a viable next step for me because I understand the value of being a good resource. I thrive on educating myself through the same processes. I teach because I learn. Studying wealth, personal development and business has made me fluent in the languages of goal setting and living life through one’s passions. Though I feel I have made tremendous strides, I have never stopped learning. I have never peaked. Once I conquer what I set out to do, I always find ways to keep climbing. I do that through Invest Learn Teach. I invest in myself, I take action with what I learn and I recycle that knowledge and skill into coaching others to do the same.

oads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads!” At the time, the words of Dr. Emmet Brown seemed like a fantasy as the DeLorean flew off to the futuristic year of 2015. The idea of a flying car has been around since the invention of the automobile, but now that dream has become a reality. Slovakian company AeroMobil recently launched the prototype for the first flying Roadster. Designed by AeroMobil cofounder and chief designer Stefan Klein, this thrilling machine transforms easily from automobile to plane in a matter of just seconds. The AeroMobil 3.0, which was recently launched, has been actively participating in a regular flighttesting program since October 2014. As a car, the AeroMobil acts like any other you may operate. It uses gasoline for fuel, fits into any standard parking space and can travel on any highway or road. As a plane, it’s at home in any airport. One notable characteristic: the AeroMobil is able to take off and land on any strip that is just a few hundred metres in length. The body shell, wings and wheels of the AeroMobil are built from advanced composite material. This current prototype includes many of the features that will be built into the final

version of the automobile/airplane. These features include avionics equipment, autopilot and an advanced parachute deployment system. The AeroMobil also executes several other highly advanced technologies, which include a sturdy suspension system that allows the vehicle to take off and land even on terrain that can be very rough. The AeroMobil 3.0 uses a Rotax 912, which is a four-cylinder engine that features two carburetors, electric start, a four stroke liquid/ air-cooled engine with opposed cylinders, a dual-electronic ignition, mechanical fuel pump, propeller speed reduction unit and an air intake system. Presently, the Rotax 912 is the bestselling, four-stroke engine on the market. This engine has more power and is able to keep its weight light for flying — making it the best power to weight ratio in its class. Time between overhauls for the Rotax 912 series engine is an impressive 2,000 hours. After decades of research and development, the flying car has finally arrived. Nobody knows for sure what kinds of adjustments this will cause for the environment, air traffic control and other unforeseen issues, but now that Pandora’s Box has been opened, there’s no going back.

UPDATE: KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE By Business & Industry Staff

he proposed Keystone XL pipeline is an approximately 1,200 mile long 36-inch pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Steele City, Nebraska, via Baker, Montana. The Keystone pipeline already exists, and the XL is a new project. According to the proponent, TransCanada, the pipeline would take two years to construct once approval is received, and would provide 13,000 construction jobs. Of the 1,200 miles, 329 miles is in Canada, from Hardisty to Monchy, Saskatchewan. The pipelineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capacity will be 830,000 barrels per day. Trans-Canada suggests the new project will augment current pipeline infrastructure, and also support new production in the Bakken region, while

also improving access for Canadian and American producers. There are many pipelines running across Canada and the United States. Some statistics suggest there are more than 2.5 million miles of gas, oil and other pipelines in the U.S. In Canada, we transport in excess of 3.3 million barrels per day over 22,000 miles of pipeline. With rail transport of oil currently exceeding 200,000 barrels a day, and carried by seemingly endless trains winding across Canada, the future of the Keystone seems to be more important, given the view pipelines are safer than transporting oil by rail. On February 25, President Barack Obama vetoed the bill that would have given approval for construction of the Keystone

XL pipeline. It was only the third veto of his presidency, but it was a direct challenge to the Republican majority in both the House and the Senate. How did this pipeline project become so political, even when it has limited environmental impact and limited economic impact over the long term? First, the pipeline will service oil from the Athabasca Tar Sands deposit in Alberta, which many environmentalists have targeted, suggesting it is “dirty” and has too great a carbon footprint to extract without grave environmental consequences. Secondly, because the project is international in that it crosses the Canadian border into the United States and requires presidential approval, it was a possible target for political action, even if the pipeline itself was only a symbol of the larger climate change struggle. Michael Levi, senior fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, suggests Keystone is a small player that has had a big effect, despite its size. “Things like the falling price of oil will have a larger influence on whether the tar sands get mined than whether the Keystone XL gets built.” The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, said after the veto that the issue is far from dead. The Republicans could take the Bill up again, but would need a twothirds majority to override the President’s veto, and it is unlikely to find that. That said, the project is not dead. Until the State Department presents the President — or the next President — with a final report on Keystone XL, there will be no movement. President Obama still says he is not against the project, but is against the House and Senate trying to override what he considers to be the traditional approval process. As this stalemate continues, rail traffic increases. Gary Doer, Canada’s current ambassador to the United States, says during the period Keystone has been delayed, rail traffic carrying oil from Canada to the U.S. has increased tenfold. Experts suggest rail traffic is safe 99 per cent of the time, but the few derailments that do occur are often catastrophic. The political calculus is difficult, but politics is always about choices. The 2015 Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show

n June 3 and 4, Weyburn was once again the site of the Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show. This event, which has been held once every two years since 1985, was a huge success thanks to the continuing support of the local community. The show, endorsed by the Petroleum Services Association of Canada

(PSAC), provides an opportunity for the service and supply segment of the industry to show and display their wares and latest technology applicable to the oil and gas industry. It is a chance for attendees to network with others from across the province, country and world (this year, people came from as far away as China and Europe).

Earlier in the year, there was some concern over whether the economic downturn would affect the show. However, support was strong. There was a full schedule of events with all the suppers and luncheons being sold out, and exhibitor space sold out quickly. In all, more than 5,000 people attended and $1 billion of equipment was on display at the Weyburn Exhibition Grounds.

Putting on such a large event requires the assistance of many individuals and organizations. Tanya Hulbert, show manager, states: “The Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show would not be the success it is without the support of our community. We are fortunate many local businesses, service clubs and organizations assist with the show. The Weyburn Kinsmen Club drove the shuttle vans supplied by Barber Motors. New Age Motorsports donated grounds transportation. The Weyburn Roller Derby Association, Colour My World Child Care, the Weyburn Redwings and the Weyburn Youngfellows did catering. The Weyburn Comprehensive STARS Choir provided entertainment. The Weyburn Curling Club ran our Social Centre. Hallberg

Rentals donated onsite washrooms. Goliath Disposal provided refuse and recycle bins. The Silver Seals did grounds clean up. The Weyburn Oilshow Board thanks the City of Weyburn and the Weyburn Ag Society for all that they do to keep the grounds and facilities in top shape. We have received many comments from exhibitors and attendees about what a beautiful city we have and how welcomed they feel. At the end of the show, we, as a board, are most proud of how the community comes together to host such a wonderful event.” Chairman Del Mondor noted the 2015 show saw a tremendous amount of support from the Government of Saskatchewan and the City of Weyburn.

In May, a 3,000-gallon fuel card lock system was purchased and installed at the airport enabling the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) Ambulance to refuel there.
