hen Weyburn’s Brooke and Brody Ward got engaged last April in Budapest, Hungary they immediately thought about having a destination wedding. “We both love to travel and a destination wedding seemed like a great idea,” says Brooke. However, after some consideration, the couple changed their minds. While a destination wedding would be a wonderful experience, they wouldn’t be surrounded by all the people that matter most. “If we’d gone away to get married, our grandparents wouldn’t be there,” says Brooke. “In the end, being with family on our special day meant the most to us.”

The couple decided to have their wedding in Weyburn, where they make their home. The date was set for June 13, 2015, and Brody, Brooke, her sister Britany, her mother Dawna, mother-in-law Coreen and relative Laura Watson set to work planning a vintage-style country wedding. “We all had so many unique ideas and Laura had tons of connections, experience and amazing things for us to rent.” There were many details to attend to including dresses, tuxes, rings, hair, makeup,

The custom invitations were printed by Southern Printers, and the couple designed a one-of-a-kind engagement ring and bands at York Jewellers in Weyburn. Brooke also found the perfect groom’s gift — a watch — at York’s, as well as gifts for her bridesmaids, mom and mother-in-law.

Brooke and Brody picked a gorgeous local venue for the ceremony, Weyburn’s Moffet Place B & B owned by Jayden and Cara Stewart. The couple decided to have a small ceremony and the B & B offered the look and feel they wanted. “Moffet Place B & B is a beautiful 100-year-old venue full of history and character,” says Brooke. “It’s the perfect place for anyone wanting an intimate ceremony or a unique getaway.” The reception and dance needed a bigger venue to accommodate all their guests, and the Weyburn curling rink was just the place.

Roy of Velour Hair Studio were enlisted to ensure Brooke and her bridal party looked their very best. “Having hair and makeup done at home made getting ready fun and stress-free.” A few days earlier, Brooke’s lashes were done by Dina Yik with Glamoureyes and her nails were done at Tessa’s Beauty and Wellness. Brooke and Brody made sure to include family heirlooms and memories into their special day by displaying their mothers’ wedding dresses and parents and grandparents wedding photos at the ceremony. Brooke looked stunning in her Lesposa wedding gown that she found not far from home, at Regina’s NWL Contemporary Dresses. Brooke’s jewelry was purchased from Luann Charles with Sella and Dot. The beautiful bouquets and boutonnieres were designed by Brooke’s mom with help from Brody’s grandmother and aunt. Brody and the groomsmen wore suits from Weyburn institution

Mel’s on Third, where Brooke also found gifts for her father and father-in-law. The intimate ceremony held at Moffett Place B & B was beautiful and made extra special with the couple writing their own vows and being officiated by family friend Shelby Kinrade. The Weyburn Curling Rink turned into a gorgeous wedding venue. Guests joined Brooke and Brody for dinner and dancing to celebrate the newly married couple in style. The tables were adorned with black tablecloths, and every chair was transformed with elegant black and white covers — both with burlap and lace accents to add a vintage country touch to the festivities. Every table had bottles of wine with custom labels made by Southern Printers, and guests were treated with tins of candy and a tiny succulent wedding favour made by Brooke herself. “We were amazed at how gorgeous the venue looked,” says Brooke.

“Our guests were impressed with the personal touches incorporated into our country vintage theme.” M & M Catering provided a delicious spread of food, and the bar was stocked from the Liquor Spot. The wedding cake was made of cupcakes made by Brooke and her mom, and friends and family helped with a wonderful selection of sweets for a delightful dessert bar for everyone to enjoy. Local photographer Christan Barker captured the event from start to finish, and Mel Hoffman of Mel’s Movies made a keepsake video for the bride and groom to cherish. “Everyone had a great time,” says Brooke. “It was an amazing day, celebrating with the people we love most. We were blessed to have had so many wonderful businesses to work with, along with so many friends and family members pull together to help make our day perfect.”

njoying life and bringing others joy is what I love to do. I try to take nothing or no one for granted, and keep my thoughts positive. Here are some of my beauty secrets. 1. Begin by cleansing your face. You should cleanse, tone, and moisturize for optimal results. 2. Next, apply concealer to areas that need extra coverage — under eyes, acne, red spots. 3. Foundation is next. I like to airbrush — this gives the appearance of a flawless complexion. Airbrushing is fast, light, and lasts all day. 4. Next, apply blush. I only apply blush to the apples of the cheeks because it makes you look happy.

5. Now is the time to do your lips. Use whatever you are comfortable with — lipstick, gloss, liner, or a combination. 6. Time for the eyes. Use a lighter base shadow, and then a darker shadow to contour and accentuate. To achieve one of my favourite looks, choose three shades. I like a soft brown as your base all across lower lid, a dark plum from the middle of your eye to the outer corner, and a lighter brown or soft white under brow, in the corner of your eye close to your nose, and on the highest part of your cheekbone. This opens your eyes and creates what I call a butterfly effect. 7. Now apply eyeliner. I recommend using a pencil on top then going over it with liquid. I only use a pencil on the bottom to keep it subtle. 8. If you add anything to enhance your eyebrows, do this now. For a natural look, take a pencil and start by sweeping it from the outside corner working your way inward, directly and lightly on the hairs, be careful not to touch it to your skin. 9. And finally, use finishing powder to reduce shine and ensure everything stays in place. Gently and lightly dust it along your T-zone.

10. For a fuller lash effect, apply mascara to both the top and bottom of the lashes. Begin by looking down and applying to the top lashes in a rolling, sweeping motion. It’s important to coat every eyelash to blend false lashes and achieve a natural look! 11. Always feel good about yourself — true beauty comes from within. or those who rely on corrective lenses, the thought of waking each day and seeing their surroundings clearly without the aid of glasses or contacts feels like a dream. But with the increasing popularity of laser eye surgery, thousands of Canadians are making their dream of perfect vision a reality. Types of Laser eye surgery There are two main types of Excimer laser surgery done in Canada: LASIK (Laser assisted in situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photo-Refractive Keractectomy). LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) is a more recent laser procedure. With PRK, the surgeon gently removes the cornea’s outer layer, then reshapes the cornea with a laser beam (guided by a computer) that vaporizes tissue beneath the cornea’s surface. Healing time: about one week. With LASIK, the surgeon cuts a flap in the cornea before reshaping it with a laser. The flap is put back after, making the healing process faster. Healing time: typically a few days. LASEK is a combination of PRK and LASIK. The cornea’s outer layer is cut, loosened with alcohol and lifted. As with PRK, a laser beam then vaporizes tissue below the cornea’s surface. The outer layer is put back in place following the laser portion of the procedure. Healing time: about two weeks. “You can be outspoken through your art without having to speak”

“I was always surrounded by art,” says 31-year-old Blackburn. “It fed me from a very young age.” Growing up in Choiceland, Sask, a town of approximately 400, Blackburn watched and learned from various family members as they did woodworking, embroidery and beadwork. As art became her calling, she drew inspiration from contemporary artists — in the past, Kehinde Wiley, and now, Jay Senetchko and Jason Yarmosky. In the beginning, she was interested in exploring her First Nations heritage through her art. This was a heavy approach and Blackburn soon recognized the pressure she was putting on herself. “I realized I was trying to fix something that wasn’t necessarily broken,” says Blackburn. But, art is about evolution and she soon shifted her perspective. She now creates with the aim of speaking from her own experiences based on who she is, to celebrate her heritage according to how she understands it.

Now, she sees and experiences the magic that can happen when she lets go and lets the process happen, rather than trying to think her way through. Though she admits to being a perfectionist, as many artists are, she is able to step away from her work when it gets tough. “I’m just seeing where my art takes me,” says Blackburn. Blackburn also makes First Nations beaded jewelry. What began as a hobby soon became a small side business due to demand. The jewelry is sold at a gallery in B.C. and can also be viewed and purchased on her website. “You can be outspoken through your art without having to speak,” says Blackburn, who has a natural inclination towards introversion. This up-and-coming Saskatchewan artist’s expressive voice is one to watch and savour. Through the multifaceted nature of art, Blackburn strives to push the boundaries of how people view the world. Having been awarded many arts grants, Blackburn’s art is currently part of OSAC’s (Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Council) “Arts on the Move,” an exhibition touring 24 communities over the course of two years. Her current exhibition includes colourful, poignant and heartfelt portraits of family members. You might just be in for a weekend DIY project instead of an entire overhaul. If you decide to replace the windows, make sure you opt for energy efficient models that maximize the amount you can save on your energy bills, keeping your space cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. Look for windows that are low-e (low emissivity) which reflect the heat to the warm side of the glass (to the inside in winter and the outside in summer) and have a good u-factor rating, which determines how well the window prevents heat loss. If you’re planning on selling your house in the next five years, new windows are a major selling feature; it’s one of the top five things potential buyers ask about a home. In my experience, good quality, energy efficient vinyl windows will give you the most bang for your buck.

Doors: The Unexpected King of the ROI Dollar for dollar, replacing your existing front door is one of the best returns on investment projects you can do. Your front door is the focal point of your home’s façade. And don’t forget about your door hardware. High quality door hardware complements and completes the look of the door and, more importantly, ensures your home’s security.

Casement: Casement windows swing in and out like a door and are operated with a crank. They offer a high level of ventilation and have a tight seal when closed. You often find them in hard to reach or awkward places (like above a kitchen sink) because they’re easier to open. Double-hung: One of the most common types of windows, it consists of two sashes that move up and down. These windows are great for ventilation. What they lack is energy efficiency, as they often leak more air into homes than other types of windows. PiCture: Picture windows are large and fixed, usually flanked by two casements or double-hung windows. Picture windows are big and dramatic, allowing for a lot of natural light and unobstructed views. However, this style is definitely “just for looks” as they offer no ventilation.

You can always opt for a makeover instead of replacement. A fresh coat of paint and upgraded hardware will make a dramatic difference in curb appeal. While you’re at it, update the elements around your door as well, such as house numbers, mailbox, doorbell and exterior lighting. On their own, these are all small elements, but together they add up to a front entrance that looks stylish and well-maintained.

hen family and business go hand-in-hand, the usual problems associated with either can be amplified. That’s where the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise (CAFE) Canada comes in. The national non-profit memberbased association was established in 1983 with the purpose of providing support, education and resources to those involved in family enterprise.

CAFE Canada currently operates through 13 chapters across the country and has approximately 835 member companies. This large mix of both family businesses and professionals provide a wide range of services and advice to family businesses, ranging from general business management consulting and family facilitation to help with retirement and succession planning. The organization offers comprehensive online resources, workshops and seminars.

Executive director, Paul MacDonald, says, “We want to help them succeed as a family by helping them manage the sometimes complicated interface between family and business.”

There are two main reasons members join CAFE. One is a need for help in managing family dynamics, communication and conflict that may stem from the business. The second is for help in transitioning

the management and ownership of the business to the next generation. “One of the realities is that with each successive generation, people have different points of view, values, expectations and objectives,” says MacDonald. “As a result, all kinds of issues can come to the surface that need to be managed.” Mandy Farmer, president and CEO of Accent Inns, says, “I’m passionate about CAFE. It supported me in taking over the family business from my dad and aided me in doing it in a way where both the business and my relationship with my father flourished.”

he expansion and renovation at Cathedral Insurance Brokers is finally complete. “It took the better part of a year, but we’re pleased with how it turned out,” says George Sereggela, co-owner of the brokerage. He, along with partner Doug Trapp (who now oversees their other insurance venture, Mainline Insurance Brokers, headquartered in Emerald Park) felt the business had outgrown its space some time ago but didn’t want to leave its current location since customers have grown accustomed to its good visibility, ease of access and ample parking.

While the expansion was necessitated by the growth of the business — which now has 13 employees compared to seven when they took over the business in 2008 — the renovation was motivated by the desire to offer a more relaxed and inviting atmosphere for both customers and staff. “Insurance can be intimidating. We wanted to make the environment less sterile,” says Sereggela, adding that the vast majority of the work was performed by local contractors. “Anything that could have been sourced locally was, and the suppliers and contractors were also people who do business with us.”

The interior design was a team effort with input from staff and the company’s contracted designer, ckOne Design & Consulting Inc. The Benefits of Soil Testing

oil testing provides a wealth of information, but often is not thoroughly understood and often misinterpreted. The soil test report is full of numbers, percentages and scientific terms. Many simply read the recommendation at the end of the report and toss the rest of the information. When the average producer spends greater than $55 per acre on fertility, it is beneficial to know if we are getting the best result for our dollar. Here’s what to look for in a soil test report to allow just that:

Organic Matter (OM) percentage. This number is often the key to determining our soil’s health. Aside from reducing erosion, OM retains nutrients against leaching, improves tilth, provides better aeration, counteracts effects of residual herbicides and is a key component in the mineralization of nitrogen (NH4+) from previous crops residue. The higher the percentage the healthier your land is. We want to see this number gradually increase over the years. Soil pH, which measures how basic or acidic our soils are. We farm strictly basic soils in our area, considered slightly to moderately alkaline. This means our pH levels are generally 7.5 to 8.3, just about the same as baking soda. Soil pH tells us is how readily available nutrients are to our crops, what crops will perform better and the magnetic charge of the soil. Cation exchange capacity (CEC). This is the measurement of the soil’s ability to hold and exchange nutrients. Our negatively charged/alkaline soil likes to attract and hold onto positively charged ions such as nitrogen, potassium (K+), calcium (Ca+) and magnesium (Mg2+). If we have a high exchange capacity, our soils will release these important nutrients for the crop to use. CEC is also a measure of our soil texture. The higher the number (CEC 30) the more clay. The lower the number (CEC 10) the more sand. This gives us an idea on water and nutrient holding capacity and aids us in deciding how much fertilizer we can put down safely with our seed.

Percent base saturation. This helps us understand a field’s potential to support growth. It provides an understanding of the predictable availability of cations or positively charged nutrients. For example, in a case like potassium, which Saskatchewan is well known for having ample amounts of, we can understand how much of the nutrient will actually be available for production in our fields. “Salty” land. We need to keep an eye on “salty” areas of land to make sure they don’t get larger. Crops grown in these areas may not produce much of anything, but they do aid in keeping the problem areas under control. Land that becomes increasingly “salty” becomes a breeding ground for problem weeds such as kochia due to the lack of competition from anything else. Finally, soil testing is an insight into the soil’s nutrient levels. Once a field’s nutrients are put into the seed and trucked off, the field needs to be replenished. By working together, we’ll know what to put back into the soil to meet each crop’s unique nutrient requirements. Soil sampling gives us the ability to develop a fertility plan to maximize yield and allocate fertilizer funds appropriately. Soil testing isn’t about selling fertilizer, any more than having an annual physical is about selling you pills. We want to take a good look at your soil and make sure it is healthy and it will provide you with the proper crops and yields not just this year but in the years to come. It’s your future, and your family’s future — you best take care of it.

he first of its kind as an offroad vehicle, the Willys MB was originally produced in 1941 as a military vehicle. The Jeep vehicle that appeared as the prototype Bantam BRC was a light four-wheel drive vehicle used by Allied forces during World War II and after. Because of the mass number of vehicles needed during this time, Ford took over the production. Many believe the term Jeep was derived from this time in history, which was known as the GP. Over the decades, Jeep gained credibility and notoriety as an innovator in 4x4 technologies. In the 1970s Jeep introduced the first full-time 4x4 system on the market, resulting in sales being at an all-time high. The 1980s brought the introduction of the Cherokee XJ, which revolutionized the market with a number of firsts, such as the first compact four-door SUV, the first UniFrame construction

and the first full-time 4x4 with shifton-the-fly capability. By the 21st Century, the Jeep had reached new heights in design and innovation. The redesigned 2011 Grand Cherokee received rave reviews from critics. The 2013 version of that model launched the 3.0L EcoDiesel engine, which offers increased fuel efficiency without compromising power. Jeep has seen a few owners over its life span. Although it was produced by Ford during the war years, Willys Motors remained its owner until 1964 when it became Kaiser Jeep. The American Motors Corporation produced the vehicle from 1970 to 1987. ruck fans and Chevy enthusiasts alike will agree when it comes to workhorses there are few comparable to the Chevrolet and GMC full size pickup truck. Tagged with a few names such as the C or K series, the Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra has had a similar mechanical build since the mid-1960s. In early times these trucks were popular for their unique 305 and 351 V6 engines, which gave them the power and torque capacity many working people needed. Known for their overall quality and reliability, the Silverado and Sierra trucks have become the second best-selling light-duty pickup truck of all time.

The name Silverado was originally used to symbolize a distinctive trim level on the Chevy C/K trucks from 1975 to 1999. Early modes of the GMC Sierra and its Chevy counterpart were very similar in many ways with only slight variations in grilles and interior trims, introduced in the late 1990s. Choosing the Right Tire For Every Season

ehicles are a vital necessity to everyday life. With more people on the road, vehicle safety has become more important than ever before. It’s not mandatory to put winter tires on vehicles in Saskatchewan during our most blustery season. Not surprisingly, this raises the question of whether people should put them on their vehicles. The answer of course is an unequivocal “Yes.” Winter tires perform much more effectively than all-season tires during the inclement weather and icy extremes our province endures. There are several technical reasons why winter tires perform better than all-season tires. They have a softer rubber composition, which allows

them to remain more flexible in colder temperatures. They also have special grooves called siping, which allows the tire to get a better grip in conditions like snow and ice. Today, thanks to great design work and advances in the compounds used in tire manufacturing, winter tires are quiet and perform well. ‘MONEY SAVING’ MYTHS People often hesitate about buying winter tires because of the price, but this view is a little shortsighted. Your all-season tires will last twice as long if you switch to winter tires, as all-season tires are not specifically designed for winter extremes. When purchasing a vehicle, drivers should include a set of winter tires in the purchase price. This only results in a modest increase in a vehicle’s monthly payment and can save lives. In an effort to cut costs people will purchase two winter tires, as a compromise. On Transport Canada’s website it recommends installing four winter tires to: “Help maintain control and stability of your vehicle in icy conditions.” It further adds: “Mixing tires with different tread patters, internal construction and size degrades the stability of the vehicle and should be avoided.”

By placing tires that don’t match on a vehicle, drivers are negating an important part of their design. Vehicles will have problems turning or cornering because the back end doesn’t have the same grip as the front tires, causing swing. This mix and match approach also means people will have to replace their all season tires at different times, necessitating more trips to the dealership or garage. WHEN SHOULD PEOPLE PUT WINTER TIRES ON THEIR VEHICLES? The technical answer is when the temperature is consistently below seven degrees Celsius. This is also the temperature at which you can see your breath. This is the ideal time because at these temperatures, the rubber compound for all-season tires starts to harden, so the tires don’t grip or perform as well. Winter tires perform better at these temperatures because the rubber compound remains soft and supple at cool temperatures. Your best bet is to beat the inevitable rush to the dealership that comes with the first snowfall and get your tires put on before then. You won’t regret it. Once you have tried winter tires you will never go back.

e have a multiple-faceted problem: to extract or not, how to ship the product and whether to process before shipping. Further, we are facing new economic imperatives in the oil and gas sectors and in the greater economy with falling prices. There are important choices to be made. Leaving oil in the ground is unlikely, so the choices are whether to transport oil by pipeline or by train. Rail transport has increased dramatically. The needs of the public and industry have meant oil traffic has displaced both grain and potash as the top priority on the rails. That’s a different story.

With the future of the Keystone XL pipeline still uncertain as this is written, oil car traffic will continue. The debate rages on: which is better? Our national highway system is in no condition to handle the number of trucks required for our “needs.” That would be approximately 15,000 per day, according to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. 2 Pipeline technology has come a long way. Much research goes into standards, coatings, welding, inner linings and monitoring technology. Pipelines carry the bulk of our oil needs and all of our natural gas with only a small portion being carried by truck or rail.3 The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association

(CEPA) asserts safety is its number one priority and that they respond quickly to any problems. CEPA argues the lack of progress on pipeline construction is costing Canada billions of dollars in unsold oil revenue, which in turn fuels the economy and therefore, they suggest, a greener future. The railways have faced some new regulations from Transport Canada since the tragedy in Lac Megantic in 2013. They must have emergency plans and must retire the old style cars within three years, prompting a new standard for the U.S.as well. Manufacturers such as Union Tank Car Co. and Trinity Industries report as many as 40 per cent of their orders are

coming from Canada and there is a long wait for these new cars. So what are we to do? Not extracting the oil won’t happen; governments need the money from granting licenses and royalties, and taxpayers and consumers demand services and oil products. Trucking oil to market isn’t feasible. What we are left with is a choice between utilizing rail cars, which when they jump the tracks — and they will — can give us another Lac Megantic. Or, we can use rail more sparingly and rely on pipelines, which can leak for a wide variety of reasons, in remote places, spilling vast amounts of oil before anyone realizes it.

Finally, Canadians seem satisfied to ship our natural resources elsewhere to be processed, missing out on the opportunity to enjoy the economic spinoffs from that intense activity. These are important questions to be dealt with in the near future, and will be especially interesting this year with the pending Saskatchewan and national elections. Wide-ranging debate about our choices is necessary; it may very well determine our economic climate for decades to come.
