FINE Vintage Jewelry By Tonya Lambert

STYLE
As the saying goes, “What’s old is new again.” With the popularity of vintage jewelry, everyone is searching for the next big find!
I
t’s important to note that not all old jewelry is vintage. Vintage refers to older items of very high craftsmanship, materials and design that is still relevant and useful in today’s world. Real vintage jewelry is timeless and, hence, valuable. A rare vintage piece may cost more than a similar new item. Vintage-themed weddings are the latest trend, and many couples are opting for a vintage or vintage-look engagement ring. Couples can choose from a new ring made in an older style, an older setting with new diamonds, or an actual vintage ring, whether a family heirloom or something specially purchased for the occasion. Associated with romance, enduring love and traditional moral values, a vintage engagement ring is one-of-a-kind. In addition, an older piece of jewelry can be more meaningful because of the stories and the people connected with it.
STYLE
Tips When Purchasing Vintage Fine Jewelry Once the decision has been made to purchase a piece of vintage fine jewelry, there are several things you will need to consider. • Reason for Buying. People buy vintage jewelry for a variety of reasons. Is it an investment? Do you desire something truly unique or are you searching for a particular style of jewelry? Perhaps you want to own something that once belonged to a celebrity? Your reason for buying will greatly affect what you buy. If you are investing, research the market trends. For example, seven years ago, the desire for natural pearls was strong but now buyers are looking increasingly for coral pieces. Gemstones from long-closed mines, such as Golconda diamonds or Kashmir sapphires, are always in demand, as pre-owned jewelry is the only source for these precious stones.

JEWELRY DESIGN PERIODS Georgian (1714-1837) Victorian (1837-1901) • Early Victorian or Romantic (1837-1860) • Mid-Victorian or Grand (1860-1885) • Late Victorian or Aesthetic (1880-1901) Art Nouveau or Arts & Crafts (1890-1914) Edwardian or Belle Époque (1890-1915) Art Deco (1915-1935) Retro (1935-1955)
• Educate Yourself. Informed buyers make better decisions. The more you know about a product, the more likely the piece you purchase will be genuine. Educate yourself about the different jewelry design periods, specifically about the period you prefer. Learn about the well-known designers of the period — their design characteristics and their signature markings. Pieces made by well-known designers always hold their value better. Finally, gain a
basic understanding of the various cuts of gemstones, especially diamonds. Knowing what was popular or even possible in a period will help you to determine the authenticity of a piece.
all sides. Repair work or construction flaws are often only visible from the back. Check any clasps to see if the metal looks newer than the rest of the piece. Do you see a jeweler’s mark?
• Examine the Jewelry Carefully. Purchasing vintage fine jewelry is a big financial investment and every care should be taken to ensure the jewelry is authentic and in excellent condition. Examine the piece carefully with a jeweler’s loupe. Be sure to examine
Vintage jewelry has almost certainly been worn before, possibly even frequently. You should see evidence of normal wear and tear. However, more extensive damage, such as chips or cracks to the stones or metal, will lessen its value and be difficult and costly to repair. • Authentication. There are a number of things you can do to ascertain the authenticity of a piece of jewelry, beginning with educating yourself. Buy only from a reputable, experienced dealer. Ask for the original proof of purchase or packaging or mention of the piece in old letters or photos. Discover how the seller acquired the jewelry. Have the jewelry authenticated by an expert, such as a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certified gemologist. Remember, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be sure to ask if the dealer offers any warranty for your purchase. Find out about their return policy, especially when purchasing an engagement ring or jewelry as a gift. Finally, get an insurance appraisal on any piece of vintage fine jewelry you buy. Happy hunting!

Breathe, Pose, Sweat, Repeat: Inside
BIKRAM YOGA By Courtney Tait
N
inety minutes, 26 postures and a room heated to 40°C: this is the recipe for a Bikram Yoga class. This yoga practice was founded by Bikram Choudhury who began learning poses at age three. If you’re taking a Bikram class (as opposed to other forms of hot yoga), your teacher will have completed nine weeks of Bikram training to become certified. The practice begins with a pranayama breathing exercise, designed to help you focus on the present moment while releasing tension in your neck and shoulders. This, like the rest of the postures, is done twice before moving on. Next comes the standing series, which emphasizes alignment, strength, balance and flexibility. By now, you and your mat are likely damp with sweat from the 40-degree heat, designed to mimic the warm Indian climate, allowing your body to heat up and release toxins. Ready for more? Strengthen your spine with a sequence of four poses: cobra, locust, full locust

and bow. If you’ve practiced other styles of yoga, you may be surprised to notice the instructor does not demonstrate the pose. Their job is to guide you verbally, explaining how to enter, perform or hold, and exit each pose. You’ll also learn each posture’s purpose and why they are important to your overall wellness — an incentive to power through and embrace the hot atmosphere or “torture chamber” as Bikram calls it. Limbered up, it’s time to stretch, bend and twist your way through the floor series. The section of the class is what Bikram considers the “actual yoga,” and it’s a powerful way to wring out your organs and tone up your body. Each class winds down with kapalbhati body breathing, an exhalation-focused posture that stimulates the digestive system. The intense heat and repetition turns some yogis away from Bikram, but its followers attest to its physical and mental benefits. The promise of its founder? “Give me 30 days, I’ll change your body. Give me 60 days, I’ll change your life.”

which postures are practised and what order they are practised in, an Ashtanga session consists of the same set of opening, backbending and finishing sequences each time, along with one of six series that range in difficulty from beginner to advanced.
Developed by Indian yoga teacher K. Pattabhi Jois, who opened the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India in 1948, Ashtanga emphasizes synchronizing each asana (physical posture) with the breath, creating an internal heat that is believed to purify the body.
While teachers typically guide the class, students are encouraged to learn and remember the postures and the sequence in which to do them, making Ashtanga more disciplined than some other forms of yoga. For many students, repetition makes the practice easier to do on their own, as once you have learned the series and sequences, you simply step onto your mat and begin.
So what can you expect from an Ashtanga class? Continual movement and sweat, as well as deep, focused breathing — Ashtanga is a vigorous practice. But what sets it apart from other forms of yoga is the repetition. While most yoga styles feature variation in

Thank You! CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS IN BUSINESS Five years ago, JoAnne Howard took a risk. She resigned from a secure paid job to start her own business in laser hair removal. Due to personal experience with facial hair and having to drive hours to and from bigger cities for treatments, she wanted to bring this service to the local community and surrounding areas. Now, after five years in business, Sleek Appearance is located in five communities: Estevan, Oxbow, Carnduff, Carlyle and Moosomin, and is proud to serve Southeast Saskatchewan and Southwest Manitoba. Clients can take advantage of a reducing price line, which makes laser hair removal quite affordable and allows people to move on to other body parts — a huge benefit once clients experience the joy of laser hair removal.

The Joy of European River Cruising

A
good candidate for a river cruise might be someone who has previously toured by motor coach or those who have enjoyed ocean cruising. It will be for those who travel for fulfillment and for enrichment in their lives, for knowledge and experiential moments. Rather than a venue that offers entertainment, a river cruise ship will feel like a luxury hotel on the move. The itineraries are focused on the port of call, the cultures and heritage, gastronomy, history, music and art. Many of the villages, towns and great cities of Europe established themselves along one of the vast number of navigable rivers that wind their way through beautiful gorges and countryside in one
direction or another, crisscrossing Europe as the water searches to find an outlet into a larger body of water. A European river cruise will get you into the heart of the country and the heart of the city or village. The docks are generally located near the city centre, making it convenient when going ashore to explore. A fEw fEATuREs of RivER CRuising: 1. Small vessels – built low, long and narrow in order to navigate the rivers and squeeze through the locks and duck under bridges. With an average of 150 passengers, this translates into more attentive service from the staff, smaller numbers on shore excursions and no bumping elbows at the breakfast buffet. 2. World class dining – all of the meals are included in the cruise fare and are prepared with the highest standards. Locally sourced fresh food is often featured and presented with a nod to the regional cultures. Many river cruise companies will include wine and beer with lunch and dinner. 3. Shore excursions – included in the cruise fare. Generally this includes a lovely walking tour to get an overview of the village, but often the tour can visit a place as iconic as the
SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL
Benedictine Abbey in Melk or, for example, Les Halles in Lyon for wine and cheese tasting. 4. Comfortable accommodation – the cabin sizes vary from cosy to spacious, depending on the ship, and will feature enticing amenities and inviting bedding to coax you into a rejuvenating sleep so you are rested and ready for tomorrow. French balconies are abundant on most ships, with some of the newer builds featuring twin balconies (a combination of an exterior balcony and a French balcony). 5. Attractive public spaces – sun deck with walking track, a main lounge to enjoy a cocktail or listen to local talent, specialty dining venues, wine bars, fitness centre, spa and maybe a pool or whirlpool. A few of the companies that offer river cruises in Europe are: AMA Waterways, Avalon and Viking River Cruises. For an even more inclusive vacation, consider Tauck or Uniworld. Each will have different features and there could be variations in the ships even within a company. Swing of Things Improving Your Golf Game By Trina Annand
W
ith expansive courses and rolling hills, it’s strange to think the game of golf comes down to inches and minor adjustments. It’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference to game performance. A poor play is often blamed on a faulty swing, but there are a number of mechanics that work together to create that coveted perfect game. Every sport requires rigorous practice, a fact often forgotten by those in their early years of the game. “Hitting that ball and making it go where you want it to is the simplest most difficult thing you could ever do,” says professional golfer and coach Liam Mucklow. “The perfect swing is easy to do and hard to repeat.”
22
FineLifestyles
Estevan / Weyburn
It takes hard work and an understanding of the game to achieve greatness. As suggested in Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers: The Story of Success, it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master anything. If you want to perform well at the next tournament or impress your boss, then you need to not just play, but also study the game. Starting early is often a key factor in a player’s success, Mucklow himself was introduced to the sport at age four. He says each player’s idea of practice and goals are different, which is why it’s important to seek out a coach who can observe skills and test physical limits. “A swing doesn’t have to be pretty if it works for you,” says Mucklow. “Doing everything technically correct doesn’t
SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL
mean you will achieve success.” Mucklow points out that everyone’s body has certain limitations, regardless of age or experience. With the latest technology, people can measure every element of their game, judge angles and adjust in mere inches. Using this data to come up with a guide or prescription isn’t always the answer; golf in the non-professional arena is about relaxation and sometimes the mental stresses of doing everything by the book takes away from the game itself. Target fixation is another problem in golf. Players can be so focused on that elusive idea of a hole-in-one or keeping a low score that they overestimate their ability and underestimate the course. It’s best to aim for a larger part of the green when driving than try to sink the ball and miss.

Online sales can be tempting, but that great deal on a 24-inch dishwasher isn’t going to save you any money if your entire space has to be redesigned because you only had room for an 18-inch model. Work out your timeline Contractor approximations are simply that, so sitting down and working out a detailed timeline before the reno starts will help keep your contractor on track and yourself on budget. Don’t ignore the issues When you pull down walls or rip up floors, there’s a good chance you’re going to be surprised by something you find, especially in an older home. This might mean an unexpected cost up front, but it will save you tons of money in the long run. Don’t cut corners It’s always better to go the extra mile and do it right the first time. Hiring competent people to do the job, buying quality materials, and taking the time to complete all the necessary steps is key.
communicate With your contractor Constant communication is the best way to ensure everything is going as planned. Decisions that affect design, budget or timeline should ultimately be made by you — an open dialogue will help keep surprises to a minimum. use licenseD traDes Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, asbestos removal, anything to do with gas and anything structural should always be completed by a licensed professional in that specific trade. A jack-of-all-trades type can be helpful for basic renos, but saving money by hiring a plumber who’s also willing to do electrical can be a dangerous idea if they aren’t trained, licensed or insured for that line of work. DeciDe on your Diy I love it when I encounter ambitious homeowners who want to get dirty and take part in their renovation. But projects like cabinet installation, complicated tile work or skilled carpentry exceed the limit of a typical DIY project and can reduce the value of your home if done incorrectly. My advice? Involve yourself heavily in the demo — it’s the funnest part anyway! It’s important to get this done regularly as overgrown nails can be painful and may lead to health issues. At the end of April, Pet Valu introduced its very first Dog Walk. Places to Clean for a Quicker Home Sale
W
hen selling your home, the elbow grease you put into keeping it clean and neat can come with the added bonus of a quicker sale. Even though most homeowners wouldn’t dream of leaving dirty dishes in the kitchen sink or clothes on the bathroom floor when potential buyers will be coming by, there are five areas of the home that often get overlooked:
Rhonda Blanchette Real Estate Agent RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty 902 4th St. Estevan 306.461.9791 rblanchette@remax.net www.rblanchette.remax.ca
The garage — To make your garage show well, get rid of everything you don’t need and organize the rest. Hang your tools neatly on a pegboard, arrange paint cans on shelves and suspend holiday decorations from racks attached to the ceiling. This helps display “storage solutions” to buyers who crave them. The backyard — Don’t miss the opportunity to impress buyers who want an eye catching, outdoor living space. Clean the barbecue and set the patio table for guests. If you have a hot tub, run it and leave the top off to allow people to picture themselves taking a long hot soak. If you do nothing else, give your backyard a thorough cleaning; hose down the patio, mow the lawn, rake the leaves, replace dead plants and pick up pet droppings. Closets, cupboards and drawers — If you could be a fly on the wall during an open house, you’d be amazed at the number of people who open drawers and cupboards. Potential homebuyers want to see how much storage space a home has; remove as many items as possible to make them look roomier. Invest in shoe racks to keep the closet floors clutter free. Use drawer dividers to separate items

as needed. Clean your cupboard shelf surfaces, especially those in the kitchen to remove dust and food residue. Fold linens and towels and stack them neatly in the linen closet. The laundry room — Soap crusted shelves, dryer sheets littering the floor and piles of dirty laundry on the top of the dryer are all signs of a well-used laundry room. Unfortunately, these are turn-offs for buyers. Store the detergent and other cleaning supplies in bins or baskets lined up neatly on the shelf. Clean lint and dust off the walls and wash down the washer and dryer. The appliances — Most owners shine up the fronts of their appliances before listing their homes, but they forget about the interior. Whether appliances are included in the sale or not, folks will open them up to take a peek inside. If anything inside of your fridge looks more like a science project than fresh leftovers, throw it away. Wipe down the walls and clean the produce bins. Wipe the top of the refrigerator too; a lot of dust can collect up there. Give the stove and oven the same treatment, wiping off accumulated grease and baked on food. House hunters know the minute they walk in the door if they want to see more of the home. If they feel like they should be wearing a hazmat suit, they won’t stick around. A clean house gets them excited about taking a tour and possibly making an offer. When you are ready to see those offers come in, contact an agent at RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty to help.

“Everyone wants to be able to showcase something creative and unique — Shademaker can help you do just that.” ~Andria Kainz WHY DOES SHADEMAKER COME TO YOU? Client Convenience: Picking colours for your space is hard, but trying to pick colours in a store rather than your home is even harder. Making trips back and forth to the store to try samples (if you can get them) can be very frustrating. It’s the long, hard way to do it. Nowadays, a window covering professional can bring everything you’d look at in a store right to your home. This enables you to test the fabrics in your own space with the assistance of a professional right there with you providing advice and feedback. It’s beyond easy; they make the process fun and relaxing! Less Overhead: Having a storefront increases overhead, which in turn increases the amount of markup on any product. Shademaker Blinds is a trusted family owned business with little overhead. Their website is very informative and can be considered a personal storefront as it has a gallery, tips and tons of information at just a click, costing the customer nothing! “Every consultation is complimentary and is of great value to people who are trying to incorporate window coverings into such an important part of the design process,” says Kainz. “It can be a positive experience for both the design consultant and you, all in the comfort of your own home.” Contact Shademaker Blinds today for more information about adding custom window coverings to your home or office.

At CNG Stone Products, you will get the best quality materials installed by trained craftspeople who take pride in their work. “I’m very lucky to be working with a strong, experienced team,” says Scott Tresek, owner of CNG Stone in Regina. “We put a lot of pride in our work.” CNG Stone offers a wide selection of beautiful exotic granite. Not sure what to pick? The sales staff will help you find what will work with the colours in your kitchen or bathroom. Tresek explains with their laser measuring technology, measuring and cutting is a very quick but precise job. Paying close attention to detail and accuracy, the measuring process can be done within 20 minutes. Once the granite is measured and cut, installation generally takes just a few hours. Because they understand the inconvenience of having a kitchen renovated, CNG Stone Products focuses on being swift and exact with their delivery and installation. “We guarantee the granite will be installed within two weeks after the cabinets are installed,” remarks Tresek. “We were one of CNG Stone’s original customers from when they first opened their business. At that time they did work in our basement, which was a complicated project because of our cyclone fireplace, which has a rounded shape. The installers had to haul in huge pieces of granite and everything had to be very precise. It looks great and we get a lot of compliments. They were simply awesome! Everyone was great with us, very friendly and more than accommodating! Since then we’ve also hired them to do the granite in our kitchen and mud room. They are the only people we will deal with. I’ve told every person that I know who’s getting granite to go to CNG Stone.” – Dean Hicke
“Right from the very beginning, we were pleased with our decision to hire CNG Stone for our renovation. The pricing of the project was reasonable and the service was wonderful! Susan is great at what she does. She and the installers were very professional. Everyone communicated well and the delivery and installation was completed on time. The installers were clean and polite. Overall, we were very pleased with everything and would highly recommend them to anyone!” – Dean and Shannon Fedor
“For three out of the last four houses that we’ve built, we’ve hired CNG Stone. Susan, who works in the front of the store in sales, is the absolutely perfect person for that job. She really cares about the customer and is dedicated to selling only the best products. We have complete confidence in her. She is true to her word; when Susan says something’s going to get done, it gets done. She is always helpful. We’ve had very few issues but if something does happen to come up, they always get it taken care of right away. I just can’t say enough good things about them!” – Michelle Bourque

The Many Advantages of Building with Steel The process of building can be stressful no matter what size the project. Knowing you have a strong and accurate structure can help alleviate stress. Estevan’s FrameTech Systems, owned and operated by Brad and Tenille Wilhelm, is an innovative leader in the framing industry, offering pre-engineered steel framing to accommodate the needs of homeowners and builders.
N
ot just limited to residential h o u s i n g , Fra m e Te c h Systems also provides framing of trusses, walls and joists for commercial buildings, multi-residential units, shops, garages, condos and townhouses. FrameTech Systems is proud to introduce light gauge steel framing to Canada, a method predominately used in New Zealand and Europe for more than 25 years because of its affordability, strength and durability.
Each building component involved with the framing process is fully engineered using state-of-the-art design software and precision rollforming equipment to ensure the design and assembly is incredibly fast, simple and accurate. Each piece of steel is cut to length, pre-dimpled for screws and pre-punched for service holes. “Because we can assemble a large portion of the project in a controlled environment, it drastically Tenille and Brad Wilhelm, owners

speeds up the entire building process,” says Brad. “Our product can be shipped anywhere to be installed. Open-webbed joists, along with the pre-punched service holes, can reduce the sub-trades installation time for plumbing and electrical.” Warranty call-backs are minimized since steel does not shrink, split or warp. As a result, there are no nail pops or drywall cracks to fix after the structure is completed. Walls are true and square, which allows for easy cabinet installation and precise finishing carpentry. Overall, the customer will receive a better quality finished project that is durable and low maintenance. Steel framing can be insulated the same as wood. Batten insulation can be used, however spray-foam is the optimal choice for the best R-value. A minimum one inch rigid insulation is needed on exterior walls to provide a thermal break. Exterior walls can then be finished as normal, with stucco or siding. Remodelling can be easily accomplished and non-load bearing walls can be readily relocated, removed or altered. Building with steel helps reduce the environmental impact of deforestation. FrameTech’s pre-engineered steel framing has less than one per cent recyclable waste, as compared to wood, which can have up to 20 per cent or
more. Steel is naturally mould and pest resistant and does not require the toxic chemical treatments typically applied to wood. Steel’s inherent strength and noncombustible qualities enable light steel frame houses to resist devastating events such as fires, earthquakes and hurricanes. Homes can be designed to meet the highest seismic and wind load specifications in any part of the country. Longer clear spans can be achieved, offering larger open spaces and increased design flexibility without requiring intermediate columns or load
bearing walls. House insurance costs may also be reduced when building with steel. “At FrameTech Systems, our main focus is providing our customers with exceptional quality and service from first contact to the final stages of assembly,” says Brad. Consider building with steel and all the advantages it has to offer. FrameTech Systems 1237 6th St., Estevan 1.844.634.0616 info.frametech@sasktel.net www.frametechsystems.com
PROTECTING THE EARTH By choosing to build with steel, we can help protect the environment for future generations. Steel is durable, reusable and 100 per cent recyclable. As deforestation continues to threaten wildlife, choosing to frame with lightgauge steel instead of wood can preserve our land and benefit our ecosystem. To frame a typical 2,000 sq. ft. house with wood, 40 to 50 trees will need to be cut down. This results in approximately 40,000 sq. ft. of forest area destroyed. To frame the same house using light-gauge steel, approximately six recycled scrap cars would be needed. That’s a powerful trade.

No Longer a Pipe Dream: Hassle-Free Repairs for Residential and Business Piping By Henny Buffinga Photos Images by Gillies
E
veryone dreads the day there’s a problem with the pipes, but not everyone knows you don’t always have to replace pipes to fix them. Advanced Sewer Restoration locates sewer lines, inspects them with video to find the issue and repairs them with no damage to yards, driveways and foundations. Using Nu Flow’s liner inserts, Advanced Sewer Restoration can fix sections of pipe and once it’s cured, the liner becomes a structural part of the pipe.

Owner of Advanced Sewer Restoration, Gary Tribiger, started the company in June of last year, but he’s been working with trenchless relining for more than 10 years. “I was seeing the same problem over and over where I was working before,” he says. “I just knew there must be a better solution.” When he decided to start his own company, he contacted Nu Flow and became the licensee for the Southeast Saskatchewan. Nu Flow’s pull-in-place pipe liner restores corroded or damaged drain, waste and

vent piping systems. The epoxy liner is an efficient and effective way to seal and protect the pipes from deterioration, which can last even longer than a new pipe. “We can almost always use the existing cleanout to access the pipes; we don’t have to break up any concrete or anything like that,” says Tribiger. “Everything should look the same when we leave as when we arrived. It’s the only product I’m aware of that can be done that way. Most products require either large equipment, or digging on either end to pull a liner into place.”
Gary and Wendy Tribiger
There are different epoxies available, such as those that can withstand higher heats, which are a good option for pipes in a restaurant that have hot water from the dishwasher constantly running through it, as well as other types of buildings. The liners come with a 10year limited manufacturer’s warranty. “They are tested to last at least 50 years,” says Tribiger.
Advanced Sewer Restoration does residential, commercial and industrial work – anywhere with aging infrastructure that’s starting to fail. When you call Tribiger, he starts out by inspecting the line with video to assess the damage. “From there we can figure out how much of the line needs to be repaired or relined, and whether we can get a liner into it,” he says. If the line is completely collapsed, he works in conjunction with an excavation company to selectively dig up the sections with the worst damage and then reline the rest while causing minimal damage to the yard.
Tribiger also helps people who need to video and assess sewer line condition, which is especially helpful as part of home inspections before purchasing a new home.

Tips for Roof Maintenance IS IT TIME TO REPLACE YOUR SHINGLES? Look for these signs: • •
•
Your shingles are starting to curl. The south side of your roof will age faster. You notice a lot of granules coming off of your shingles, indicating they may need to be replaced. Your roof is leaking. This does not always means that you need to replace your whole roof. Sometimes you could just have a problem area and need it patched.
If you are not sure give us a call and we can have a look at it for you.

Does the company offer a warranty on the work it does? Will that company be around to honour its warranty? Roofing is a long-term investment. Does the company have a Worker’s Compensation number? Without one, if someone gets injured at your home, you could be liable. Does the company have liability insurance and a business license?

water refreezes causing an ice build-up. This will cause your roof to leak into the house or create larger ice dams, which will damage the roof surface. There are three things you can do to help prevent ice damming on your roof: •
•
•
First, make sure you have proper insulation in your attic. This will prevent heat loss by keeping the heat inside your home. You will avoid hot spots on your roof and save energy. Make sure you have the proper amount of venting for the size of your attic. Try to keep the bottom few feet of your roof clear of snow to prevent ice buildup in the eavestroughs. Once they are full of ice, the ice dam will slowly work its way up the roof (a clean eavestrough will help prevent this).

HOW TO PREVENT ICE DAMS THIS UPCOMING WINTER. Over the years, we have had numerous phone calls to shovel snow off roofs to help people prevent or get rid of their ice damming problems. Ice dams are created by warm weather in the winter when “hot spots” on the roof melt the snow causing the water to run to cooler spots on the roof, like eaves and valleys, where the

PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD By Brook Thalgott
Today, businesses face far more risks than in the past, such as business interruption, cash flow and liquidity, reputation, regulatory changes and weak economic climate. Now, businesses face another growing threat — cyber risk. No company, no matter how big, is immune to issues from the virtual world. Just ask Sony Pictures and Target. Both suffered massive security breaches that affected both customers and employees alike. In today’s connected world, businesses must be aware of the risks posed in cyberspace, and how to protect against threats.

BUSINESS
A
ccording to the Globe and Mail, cyber attacks have already hit more than one third of Canadian businesses. Gaining access via anything connected to the Internet, these well-funded and sophisticated criminal enterprises will attack businesses of any size and cause serious damage. Because the risk is constantly evolving, and the legal system is usually playing catch-up to technology, businesses have to protect themselves from all angles. With smaller businesses (less than 100 people) often the target, it really isn’t the massive multinationals alone that need to worry. While cyber risk insurance can help, it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. Cyber risk needs to be addressed across the whole business. An enterprise cyber risk management strategy is a must for any business these days, and senior management needs to be front and centre in planning and implementation. Where the IT department was the gatekeeper, now the whole business needs to be aware of the risks presented by cyber crime. First, businesses need to address what exactly is at risk from cyber attacks. It may be customer information, proprietary information on products or services, or communications between employees. The big question to ask is what will a hacker find valuable if they get in? The risk isn’t just financial — it’s reputational. When Sony Pictures
was hacked in 2014, they not only lost money over the release of the film The Interview, they also suffered serious reputational damage by the leak of sensitive emails between senior executives. Businesses must ask what needs to be protected and why. It’s not just senior management that needs to be involved in the development of a cyber risk strategy. A strategy should assess the current plan and practices and where improvements are needed, determine a monitoring process and what the procedures are if attacked. From the top down, the whole organization plays a part in keeping the business protected. Employees need to be educated about their responsibilities in minimizing risk, with a robust policy and compliance guidelines. Internal and external networks need to be assessed on an ongoing basis, with full knowledge of who has access to what and where everything is located. A well-planned and executed cyber risk strategy will help your business become cyber resilient. As the world becomes more and more connected, the opportunities for businesses grow — as do the risks. While we’re often prepared for the traditional business threats, we may neglect the ones that come from our connectivity. However, with a robust, well-planned and executed strategy, cyberspace risks can be mitigated.

having a traditional job in the community, even with job coaching support — one of the many services offered at Wor-Kin. Because of this, and their endless desire to better serve their clients, the staff has for several years been on the lookout for an opportunity that would fill this gap. Enter the Harvest Pie Company, which makes delicious pies and jams from locally sourced products. Originating in
BUSINESS
Pangman, Sask., the company recently came to Weyburn. “A friend of mine was operating the Harvest Pie Company from her home and expressed a desire to sell it. Sensing a perfect opportunity, we wrote a business plan for our board of directors to review,” says Brady. “In the end, both the board and staff felt it was a perfect fit for our organization and the people we support.”

Other than new ownership and staff, the Harvest Pie Company remains unchanged. Customers will be able to purchase and enjoy the same great pies and jams, which will continue to be made with tried and true recipes. Staff makes pies from scratch and then freezes them to sell; this allows customers to bake them from frozen. Customer favourites are Saskatoon berry, rhubarb, blueberry and apple. The Saskatoon berries are locally sourced from Gary’s Berries in Trossachs, Sask. The company also makes Saskatoon berry, blueberry and strawberry/rhubarb fruit spreads, as well as apple chutney.
Although not required, Wor-Kin decided everyone who gains employment with Harvest Pie Company must complete the food safety course through Sun Country Health Region (SCHR), where a modified version of the course was created for those with learning disabilities. “We thank Heather and Kristen from SCHR, who have been very helpful and supportive in getting the business up and running,” says Brady. Harvest Pie Company sells products to various grocery stores and restaurants in the southern half of the province. They can also be purchased at the Sarcan Recycling depot at the retail area at the front counter.

Harvest Pie Company is considering an expansion into gluten free and/or sugar free products to meet customer requests. They are also excited to expand their community outreach by working with local groups and organizations on fundraising opportunities. Paperwork for Business
David Wakefield Southern Printers 29 11st St. Weyburn 306.842.7955
In the oilfield, trucking and several other industries, duplicate forms are necessary to ensure different people receive copies of the same form. We can produce duplicate forms up to five parts, while personalizing the forms with the company logo, name, address and contact information, if requested. We have templates on file that can be easily be modified to suit various needs. Forms will generally be numbered and installed in book form, to make it easy for a company to keep track. The option to leave them as individual forms is there if it better suits the needs of the business. We can print small runs of a few forms up to large volumes. It is more expensive per item to order a few at a time, so we recommend ordering a supply that will last you six months to a year. Many businesses have several different multipart form books in use for various purposes. To keep them separate and organized, have the form name printed on the cover of the books.
W
hether your business requires invoices, business cards, envelopes, safety books, truck tickets, bill of ladings, or any other form of paper related products, we are the experts to help you with these items.

Many of these items are crucial in dayto-day business operations. Daily time tickets, truck tickets, bill of ladings and invoices are examples of forms that would be catastrophic to run out of. Keeping in mind it can take a few days for us to produce a new batch of forms, we advise ordering more forms well prior to
BUSINESS
running out. If possible, have one person in charge of handing out forms to staff as needed. By doing this, they can keep track of forms on hand and order more when supply is running low. At Southern Printers, a file is kept for each customer that contains information on past orders; this makes it easy and quick to order reprints. Modifications can easily be made to the layouts; details such as last quantities ordered, last number on the forms and date of the prior orders can also be brought up quickly when needed. Envelopes and business cards are likely the next important item for most companies. Envelopes are available in many different sizes and styles. Standard letter size envelopes are the most common and these are available in a security style or plain. The security style is generally used for mailing cheques or private mail. Larger envelopes are used for mailing or shipping several sheets at a time that should not be folded. Business cards are likely the cheapest form of advertising for most companies and design possibilities are endless, from simple black and white to full-colour with photos. For help with all these types of items, see the professionals at Southern Printers Ltd.

or 106 years, Parrish & Heimbecker (P&H) has been a key player in the Canadian agri-business and agri-food industries. Established in 1909 by two grain handlers, W.L Parrish of Brandon, Man., and Norman Heimbecker of Hanover, Ont., P&H has expanded and evolved over the past century into a diversified, vertically-integrated company involved in grain procurement and merchandising, milling, animal nutrition programs, poultry farming and food processing. Handling nearly 10 per cent of the country’s grain and milling 25 per cent of its flour, P&H

has put together an enviable network of contacts across Canada and the world, which it utilizes to maximize its customers’ returns. In March 2014, P&H expanded, purchasing Weyburn Inland Terminal. With a storage capacity of 113,000 metric tonnes, the terminal is P&H’s largest. Equipped with a colour sorter and impressive drying and cleaning capabilities, the terminal is able to load 120 railcars in 12 hours. There’s a large chemical warehouse, a 10,000 tonne fertilizer warehouse, a fertilizer plant and several liquid fertilizer storage tanks, both

on and off site. In addition, the terminal treats and sells seed. Building on their solid foundation in the grain industry, P&H has been developing and growing the terminal over the past year to further improve the success of local producers. “Customers love the great customer service and are happy to see P&H involved in the community,” notes longtime employee Sharron Schultz. “With P&H, we are seeing more trains coming in and more inventory going out. That’s good for local farmers.”

“We have plenty of new customers this year. We are drawing farmers from a wider area because of P&H’s wellknown name and reputation,” says operations manager Al Bailey, who has been at the plant for more than 35 years. “With P&H, area farmers now have more opportunities to sell their grain, as they have access to more markets. We are seeing a steadier stream of railcars than ever before despite last year’s poor crop.” “P&H is fully invested in the communities it serves,” explains general manager Roy Hoffart. “I have been with P&H for more than 26 years managing terminals around the province, and have been impressed with the company’s commitment to each individual farmer no matter how big or small, as well as to the community. P&H is about creating relationships and continuing dialogues. The success of the company and its clients is based on a vast network of local and international relationships.” Even though P&H is big enough to trade on the world stage in 24 different countries, it is still small enough to care about the people it serves locally. In Weyburn, this means sponsoring many different clubs and organizations, such as the Weyburn Redwings, Weyburn Beavers, various minor hockey and soccer teams, 4-H clubs, several area curling clubs and many more. While new to Weyburn, P&H is an old established company with a proven record of success. P&H values honesty, integrity and community. Sensitive to their customers’ needs and expectations, P&H will continue to evolve, seeking innovative solutions to ensure the success of Canadian producers, their families and their communities. hile shopping for a home is fun, it can also be stressful. The first day you start looking is pretty exciting; you’re driving around town, coffee in hand, checking out neighbourhoods and imagining the life you would lead if a certain house was yours. As time passes, the fun begins to fade. If you haven’t found a house yet, you start to worry that you never will. If you have found the house, facing the process of submitting an offer, playing the waiting game and worrying about every last detail can be daunting. If you’re also selling a home, add a few extra layers of stress. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions.

Getting pre-approved on a mortgage is an important step in the house hunt. Whether it’s your first home, a vacation property or you’re a seasoned house flipper, having the right mortgage is crucial to your financial success. A mortgage is often the scariest and most expensive purchase in our lives, no matter the stage of life. Having a mortgage specialist to help you navigate from start to finish will ease the process. Because a mortgage is just one piece of your financial puzzle, your mortgage needs to complement the rest of your finances. There are many things besides the interest rate to consider when signing on the bottom line. Consider these questions: • How much have you saved for the down payment? How much do you need? • How much are legal and registration fees? • Do you have enough life and disability insurance to cover the mortgage in the event you are unable to make the payments? • What are your current debt obligations? • How much are property taxes in the neighbourhood you want to live in? • How long do you plan on staying in the house?
BUSINESS
• What kind of home do you want? • Does it need any repairs or updating? • How much are the utilities? These are just a few of the questions you will want to ask yourself. If you are unsure of the answers, take a deep breath and give us a call. The mortgage specialists at Weyburn Credit Union have years of experience and a proven track record of getting people the right mortgage. A sound mortgage will allow you to find yourself the right house with peace of mind. Before you go online to check out the posted mortgage rates, consider who you want helping you along the way. Weyburn Credit Union has every mortgage product available to meet your needs in addition to every other financial product. But more important than that is our team of mortgage specialists who are here to serve you by putting your mind at ease, your worries to rest and your money to good use. Remember, a mortgage is more than just a payment and a bunch of papers. A mortgage is a symbol of your home, a symbol of commitment and an investment in yourself and a solid future. We’d love nothing more than to help get you started.

It’s no joke to say that in order to produce the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show, dozens of committed board members and volunteers have to work together like a well-oiled machine. The region’s largest oil and gas industry exhibition attracts 1,500 exhibitors and more than 5,000 visitors to Weyburn every two years to educate, network and celebrate innovation.

ith a kick-off golf tournament and dinner for exhibitors and sponsors, two full days of exhibition, awards ceremonies, information and brainstorming sessions, as well as guest speaker presentations, it’s no wonder the show has become so popular with attendees across North America. “Of course, it takes a lot of people to make this run properly,” says Tanya Hulbert, show manager. “This is definitely a community event and it wouldn’t be possible without the support we get from local businesses, the city of Weyburn and our committed board and volunteers. Everybody works hard, but it’s a lot of fun too.” It’s not just hard work, but also experience that has helped the show grow from the first small-scale event in 1984 to the multi-day event it is today. The show board is comprised of oil industry executives, as well as interested citizens in the Southeast Saskatchewan region, who strive to make each show a success.

to portray the show,” explains Hulbert. “We’ve already had great response to our new website, which is much more interactive and user-friendly, with online ticket purchasing and registration.” Once at the show, exhibitors will be greeted with a VIP hosting tent that offers a great outdoor space for relaxing and socializing. The show has partnered with Great Western Brewing Company for the event, which Hulbert says is a great fit that helps highlight Saskatchewan business. ABOVE www.oilshow.ca
The cooperative spirit amongst the organizers has allowed them to branch even further for the 2015 show, which brings with it a lot of new features and firsts. While Hulbert insists her job as show manager means she’s really just a “List maker who has the help of a great team,” show chairman, Del Mondor, says it’s Hulbert who makes everyone’s job easier by “Working so hard to get everything right.” Mondor, who has served on the board for 10 years, was recently appointed chairman. The board also has a new vice chairman, Ron Bartlett. But it’s more than just new faces behind-the-scenes. The show has also undergone a bit of re-branding and now features an informative and attractive new website, a new logo and a new show provider at the venue, the Weyburn Exhibition Grounds. “The actual look of the event will be much different, but just as inviting as in years past,” says Mondor. “We worked a lot in 2014 to create our vision for how we wanted

As much as the show is an opportunity for oil industry networking and promotion, it’s also about giving back to the community. Proceeds generated from the show are reinvested in capital improvements for the Weyburn area, such as improving facilities or funding industry projects in the city. Thanks to profits generated by the Oil and Gas Show, the city’s airport recently acquired a new jet-fuel system so that STARS air-ambulance service can service the area. Monies from the show also funded new fencing, re-paving and washroom updates at the exhibition grounds, improvements at the local golf clubhouse and a new concrete pad at the curling rink. In 2014, the board also gave $5,000 in bursaries for the Saskatchewan Safety Council. “All of those funds go to educate people here, in the southeast region of the province, so it’s another way those right in our own community benefit from the show,” explains Hulbert. The businesses and citizens in the city of Weyburn are also instrumental in the show’s success. Hulbert says there are several local business people who volunteer their time on the board, or volunteer their own time or equipment during the show.

Mondor adds that with so many visitors to the city, the hard work of staff at local restaurants and hotels ensures those from afar get a chance to experience Weyburn’s friendly, welcoming nature.
The Saskatchewan Oil and Gas show is free to attend, and provides a chance for those in and out of the oil industry to learn and have fun.
With the slump in oil prices and tough times in the industry, Mondor says there were some concerns the show wouldn’t bring in as many exhibitors as past years, but this year — like every other — exhibitor space is sold out. Attendance numbers are expected to be as high or higher than usual, and excitement for the event is still growing.
On June 3, the exhibition features the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Recognition Awards with guest speaker Honourable Bill Boyd, Minister of the Economy, and the SE Saskatchewan Oilman of the Year Awards presented by the Weyburn Oilshow Board. Highlights on June 4 include the Barnstorming Breakfast sponsored by PSAC and a Crescent Point Energy sponsored luncheon with guest speaker John Gormley.
“In many ways, when there’s an economic downturn in oil, that’s when networking and showcasing your business becomes most important,” says Hulbert. “The show sold-out quickly and that’s wonderful.”
For a complete show schedule, exhibitor list, map and more, visit the easy-access website, www.oilshow.ca.
Plans are already in the works for the 2017 event, which will likely include expansion, says Mondor. “It’s been a year of renewal, and I think there’s still room for us to grow and refresh in the future.” The Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show Board members are Del Mondor, Ron Bartlett, Tanya Hulbert, Bill Pittman, Darcy Cretin, Ron Carson, Ron Jeffery, Mayor Debra Button, Dan Cugnet, Darren Woodward, Dennis Mainil, Don Sealy, Doug Emsley, Dylan Gilliss, Jeff Chessal, Johnny Johnston, Kim Brady, Larry Heggs, Laurence Woodard, Mark Schneider, Mike Winter, Morley Forsgren, Nikki Dickie, Owen Skjonsby, Ray Frehlick, Richard Henning, Ryan Janke, Shane Pollock, Tim Bangsund, Trevor Pandachuk, Trevor Sealy and Tyler Tollefson.

Three Generations of Hard Work and Community Spirit By Henny Buffinga Photos Doug Sully
Tony Day bought his first water truck in 1957. Since then, he has built a successful group of companies that continue to grow into the second and third generation of business and family. Despite witnessing many ups and downs in the oil patch, his company, Fast Trucking Service Ltd., has remained in business by providing customers with the best service they can. 84

FAST TRUCKING SERVICE LTD. Fast Trucking is a family business, established in 1957 by Tony and his wife, Vi. The couple is still involved in the daily operations and offers their input to their children Dennis, Larry and Linda, who have since taken over the company. Dennis and Larry manage operations, while Linda and Vi operate the business end, with the help of Larry’s wife Lori. Darwin Duncombe, Greg Wall and Laurie Connelly also help with day-to-day operation of the business. Fast Trucking specializes in moving drilling rigs and other specialized rig equipment, servicing the oil patch in Southwestern Manitoba all the way to the foothills of Alberta. With a fleet of modern trucks, and 30 to 50 tonne pickers, if you need it moved they can probably do it for you. Together with the help of a team of dedicated employees, Tony’s legacy has grown to include several family businesses, including Fast Trucking, Day Construction, General Well Servicing and Fontana’s Trucking. Together, they employ more than 350 people in the region. The Days have built this business from the ground floor up, with the aim of creating a homegrown business to help their town of Carnduff, a small community of 1,200, to thrive. DAY CONSTRUCTION Day Construction was established in 1983, specializing in lease preparation, gravel hauling and handling train derailments in Saskatchewan. Now, with 30 pieces of equipment, including Cats from D9s down, they can handle almost any job, including mulching soil with their IronWolf. Tony always had an interest in running Cat bulldozers, and in 1952, he and his brother Willie bought a D4 Cat with a scraper to build dugouts in the winter and roads in the summer. In 1979, Tony thought getting a Cat to move rigs was the only thing to do since no one else had them in the area. As the work came in, he gradually increased his fleet of bulldozers until it made sense to create a new company that specialized in construction. Day Construction has never looked back.

When Willie passed away, he left the D4 to his brother and the fully operational bulldozer sits proudly in the Day Construction shop today. Nigel Spittal, also known as Kiwi, having moved to Canada from New Zealand, manages Day Construction and has been with the company for more than 20 years. GENERAL WELL SERVICING LTD. General Well Servicing was started in 1996, and has grown to include five rigs and four testing vessels. Managed by Kevin McCannell who has been with the company since 1998, the company has many loyal and skilled employees. “The success of General Well Servicing

has been our long-term employees, running well maintained and upgraded equipment,” says Dennis. General Well began when Tony purchased a service rig to work his personally owned wells. Now they have grown to five rigs, which they operate in conjunction with other companies in the oil patch. FONTANA’S TRUCKING The Day family purchased Fontana’s Trucking in September of 2006. The owners at the time, Bruce and Bev Bailey, were thinking of retirement, but as they say, plans change. Bruce and Bev are still managing the day-to-day operations to this day.

Based out of Virden, Man., Fontana’s Trucking operates a fleet of 18 trucks and 55 trailers, with around 34 employees to round out the team. They are a stockyard for various oilfield supplies, including casing, tubing, rods, drill pipe and pump jacks. The Fontana’s trucks deliver these products to various drilling and construction sites all over Southwest Manitoba, Southeast Saskatchewan and to the various potash mines in Central and Northeast Saskatchewan. Fontana’s has thrived in recent years due in large part to the close relationships they maintain with local oil companies like Tundra Oil and Gas. A mainstay in the Virden oilfield community, Fontana’s continues to grow.
COMMUNITY MATTERS The oil business has been good to Tony, his family and his employees. Tony has seen a lot of booms and busts in the oil field, but he was able to weather them all. In 1999, he was named the South East Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Man of the Year. Ten years later, in 2009, he was inducted into the Oil and Gas Hall of Fame. More recently nominated for an ABEX award by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce for Community Involvement, Tony was always known for having a seat at his table. The Day family’s generosity is obvious everywhere in Carnduff. Tony and Vi’s names are on the Regional Library attached to the recently built school. Tony’s name is on the brand new medical clinic and Fast Trucking entered into a five-year agreement to have their name attached to the Fast Centennial Arena. “I love this place,” Tony says of Carnduff. “It’s my home and any chance I have to help make it a better place to live, I’m all in. Giving back to the community is just our family’s way of saying thank you.” Now the third generation of Days are getting into the business, showing interest in keeping Tony’s legacy going and to make him proud. “The reason Fast Trucking has been as successful as it has been is because of our loyal customers and employees,” says Dennis. “We have good people who do a great job for us. When you see the same guys working right beside you for 30 years, it says something about their character and the character of the company.” “We would like to thank all the oil companies, drilling companies and engineers for all the work we have received in the past years,” says Dennis. “It is one thing to be successful, but to do it with your family and friends and watch as the community prospers alongside the business… well, there’s nothing better.’’ Fast Trucking Service Ltd. Petroleum Options are Easy to Access at Prairie Sky Co-op
F
or many people, the best thing about Prairie Sky Co-op is that members own the business. When you get a Co-op number, you become a shareholder in the business and every year you get a portion of your purchases back in equity and cash. For the past several years, petroleum equity has been about 6.5 per cent or about 6.5 cents a litre on fuel purchases. Every member of the Co-op, from individuals to the biggest corporation
or farming operations, earns equity. The Co-op’s 2013 total patronage allocation exceeded 4.5 million dollars, with 3.2 million of that in cash. Based on the above allocation, members purchasing bulk fuel, lubricants, cardlock and pump fuel would have had an average of three weeks of their fuel purchases returned back to them. All of the above mentioned services, as well as equity and cash back, are available from Prairie Sky Co-op in Weyburn and Beaubier.
The Co-op offers the largest, easiest access cardlock in Weyburn, along with a cardlock serving the south from Beaubier. Weyburn’s cardlock offers satellite pumps enabling customers to fill both sides of their truck in one spot. Agricultural and commercial members benefit from Prairie Sky Co-op’s bulk fuel delivery, which delivers any amount and type of fuel as needed, whether it’s regular or premium gasoline, which is top tier certified (a standard endorsed ABOVE: Weyburn cardlock

Co-op offers an auto-fill option that keeps bulk tanks full without the customer needing to check their fuel levels or phone for a top-up. Prairie Sky Co-op can provide a variety of convenient container sizes or bulk delivery of industrial oils, agricultural lubes and greases in a variety of viscosity. Formulated for gasoline engines, Sonic Silver and Sonic Gold (synthetic), along with diesel engine formulated DMO Gold and DMO Gold (synthetic), are available in convenient 1 litre (L) size to 5L, 20L, 205L right up to 1,000L containers to meet the demands of any operation. All Co-op petroleum products are refined and blended to meet or exceed manufacturers’ specifications and are warranty approved. They are covered by comprehensive fuel and oil guarantees, which are backed by Co-op’s supplier, Federated Co-operatives Limited. Prairie Sky Co-op will always have a solid base of petroleum products through the Co-operatives Consumer Refinery. All retail Co-ops own a share of the refinery in Regina with the profits being channelled back to the Co-op members. In July of 2014, Prairie Sky Co-op and Federated Co-op began a joint project to upgrade and expand bulk fuel storage. The 20-tank farm will have a new capacity of 4.6 million litres of fuel. This expansion will also see improvements to Weyburn’s cardlock, adding premium gas pumps, more diesel pumps and a DEF dispenser. Co-op’s Weyburn plant is located at the intersection of Highways 13 & 39. The Beaubier location is located on Highway 18, 20km west of Oungre. Business Incorporation and Effective Debt Collection planning on having, a number of owners, incorporation is preferable. First, it is easier to transfer ownership in the business, as all the owners have to do is acquire or sell their shares in the company. 3. Government Grants. INCORPORATION The decision to incorporate a company is influenced by many factors, which include some of the following advantages: 1. Limited personal risk. An important advantage of incorporation is the limited liability it confers on shareholders with respect to most debts, obligations and liabilities of the corporation. 2. Number of Owners. Incorporated companies can have multiple owners. If the business has, or is

4. Ability to raise capital. The ability to issue various classes of shares with preferences as to dividends, redemption or convertibility enhances a corporation’s ability to obtain funds for expansion or development. 5. Employees. Corporations can offer shares to their employees as a form of profit sharing incentive, thereby sharing in the profits and performance of that corporation without affecting control. 6. Possible tax advantages. Small Canadian controlled private corporations are taxed at approximately half the regular rate on the first $500,000 of active business income in each year. A corporation also has additional tax planning and income splitting arrangements available. Low-taxed small business income distributed as dividends to high-income owners is typically taxed at a slightly lower rating, which translates into individual tax saving for the shareholder when compared to salary income. 7. Continuous existence and ownership is transferable. The death or withdrawal of a shareholder does not affect the existence of the corporation, which enjoys perpetual succession.

Whitecap Haztech Partnership Spirit of True Partnership Photos by Scott Goodwill
Saskatchewan is a busy place these days; the world needs the resources found both above and below its fertile soil. It takes a lot of work to produce those resources and there is great opportunity for those service providers who can help facilitate that work as safely, sustainably and efficiently as possible.
U
ltimately, every service provider is as good as the tools, talent and ideas they possess, and partnerships are the catalyst that allows them to do more with the resources they have. That’s the idea behind Whitecap Industrial Services, a group of companies working together in partnership to become greater than the sum of their parts and to provide industry with the best tool for just about any job that needs doing. Whitecap Industrial Services is a partnership between the Whitecap Development Corporation and six companies who provide a broad range of services to the resource industry. The Whitecap Development Corporation is the investment arm of Whitecap Dakota First Nation, located just 20km south of Saskatoon. It has built a reputation in the 21 years it’s been in operation for developing strong partnerships that have resulted in the completion of successful projects including the Dakota Dunes Golf OIL & GAS
Links and the Dakota Dunes Casino — the top ranked golf course and largest casino in Saskatchewan respectively. “Our partners were looking to connect with aboriginal businesses in Saskatchewan, and we were looking for ways to access the resource sector,” says Darrell Balkwill, CEO of Whitecap Development Corporation. “We felt it would strengthen our offering if we could present those partnerships as a team of complementary services rather than a series of one-offs. The idea behind these partnerships is we work together to provide opportunities for each other. As majority owners, we are doing our part by actively marketing the services Whitecap Industrial Services provides and developing strategies to connect our community members and all First Nations people with training and employment opportunities.” Whitecap Industrial Services is comprised of partnerships between the Whitecap

Whitecap RCS Energy Partnership — An Integrated Project Management Services company combining multiple engineering, field and technological disciplines. Each partner shares core values regarding safety and service. “All of our partners have been recognized in their respective industries for their commitment to safety, management and customer service,” says Balkwill. “These are some of the top service providers in Canada.” They also share a desire to innovate both in the field and through labour force development. Cutting edge equipment and skills require specialized training and Whitecap Industrial Services recognizes the opportunity to train and employ First Nations people to fill those jobs. “It’s been really great discussing these ideas within the partnership,” says Shawn Hazen, president of Haztech. “We have an opportunity to do some innovative work. We are looking at partnerships between educational institutions as well as customized training programs, scholarships and mentoring opportunities within our group of partners. We expect
to make some exciting announcements in the near future.” Whitecap Industrial Services is committed to accessing and developing the First Nations labour force in Whitecap and Saskatchewan. “Industry places great value on providing training and employment opportunities for First Nations people and one of the major focuses of this partnership is to ensure that Whitecap members get access to those opportunities,” says Chief Darcy Bear, president of the Whitecap Development Corporation. “Ultimately it comes down to developing a team of partners that share our values — there is real strength in that.” That’s what it’s about, a partnership that strengthens every member. Whitecap Industrial Services chose the Swiss army knife as its symbol; multiple specialized tools contained in one case that, when used together, make the job easier.

LET’S TAKE A R.I.D.E.
I
f you perform off-highway driving or make use of Oil Well Service Vehicle Permits (OWSVP), you may find the following information of interest.
There is an excellent one-day, inclassroom course being offered (developed by the Saskatchewan Trucking Association) called R.I.D.E., which stands for Resource Industry Driver Enhancement. This course has been approved in Saskatchewan as appropriate training for those using OWSVPs or having off-highway driving requirements.
Cliff Reaney CR Safety Ltd. 64 3rd Street NE, Weyburn 306.861.9966 creaney@sasktel.net crsafetyltd.ca
Whether you are a new company, a driver just starting out or have been in the business since Fred Flintstone was sliding down his dinosaur’s back, this course offers information and skills which can be of use to you. Even experienced drivers can forget things or acquire bad habits, and certain skills and knowledge not used repeatedly may be lost through lack of practice. Also, it is difficult to keep on top of changing regulations; this course can help in that area as well. The course is made up of the following 19 modules: Attitude, Image and Public Relations; Driver Fitness, Fatigue and Alertness; Hours of Service Overview; Vehicle Inspections; Airbrakes Overview; Professional Defensive Driving Techniques; Passing, Following and Stopping; Backing; Determining Preventability; Adverse Conditions; Off-highway Driving; Map Reading; Regulatory Requirements; Weights and Dimensions; Cargo Securement

Overview; Transporting Dangerous Goods Overview; Hand Signals for Directing Vehicles; Fire Prevention and Fire Extinguishers; Vehicle Mounted Equipment. As you can see, there is a wide variety of subjects covered in this course. The information offered in some of the modules is fairly in-depth, while other modules only receive a brief overview here since they are vast enough in scope to be offered as stand-alone courses elsewhere. Taking a R.I.D.E. course can help keep you on top of your game. Professionals in all occupations and skills constantly train to maintain themselves at their peak performance. Just because you have a piece of paper saying you passed something does not make you a true professional — constant application of skill, experience, commitment and a positive attitude are required. So, be professional and take advantage of all available training. Although difficult to see and measure, the cost of courses can soon be recouped by the money saved in not having to pay for fines, penalties, repairs and lost time, not to mention new business brought in through wordof-mouth for having the best company and employees around. For further information, or to book a course, contact CR Safety Ltd. at 306.861.9966 or the Saskatchewan Trucking Association by phone at 306.569.9696, toll-free at 800.563.7623, or online at www.sasktrucking.com.

an Woynarski, president of Revolution Industrial Equipment Co., isn’t scared of a challenge. “We started up two years ago and I knew it was going to take a lot of hard work. That hard work is starting to pay off.” Revolution Industrial Equipment Co. focuses on vac equipment and related products. “We took a look at the market in southern Saskatchewan and really found the industry to be undersupported,” says Woynarksi. With a background in sales and manufacturing, Woynarski drew on that experience to choose his product lines: “I have been fortunate enough to
supply components to manufacturers in the past and this has given me the opportunity to observe their best practices and manufacturing techniques. This perspective has guided my choice of products and manufacturers to represent. My clients can’t afford to be down, so I choose the highest quality products to maximize their working hours.” Based in Regina, Sask., Revolution Industrial Equipment Co. ships orders of parts and equipment across Western Canada. “Some of the best customers I have are located right here in Saskatchewan. I really enjoy being able to provide parts and service to my local Dan Woynarski, president

customers personally,” says Woynarksi. “I am invested in their success as much as my own. If they don’t do well, I don’t do well, so sometimes that means taking calls at night or on weekends. We do what we can to keep our customers going.” The company offers combination vacs, straight vacs, hydro vacs, vac trailers, septic and water trucks, hydro seeders, grain vacs and pneumatic conveyance systems. In addition to the equipment, they also sell all kinds of hose and fittings (including BOP, Kelly and recorder hose), boilers, high pressure wash systems and pumps, turbo/ rotary nozzles, oil additives, fuel additives, grease, bulk oil and lubricants, batteries, hydro excavating dig tubes and extensions, valves, blowers and vacuum pumps. Community and family are important to Woynarski: “My wife and I are from Saskatchewan and both my sons were born here. It’s a great place to live and raise a family.” Part of Revolution Industrial Equipment Co.’s business model is to give back to the community. “From the beginning I knew I wanted to
be able to do something to improve the lives of people in Saskatchewan,” says Woynarksi. “We support local initiatives both through our church community and causes that affect us personally like Multiple Sclerosis, which my mom has lived with since I was seven.” Woynarski sees a bright future for his company: “If we remain committed to bringing the best service and products to our customers, we will continue to grow.” Revolution industrial Equipment Co. welcomes the opportunity to serve you and invites you to visit them at the Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show at booth 458.

Summer Fun is Just Around the Corner By Henny Buffinga Photos Tourism Saskatchewan/Paul Austring
Close to scenic Kenosee Lake and White Bear Lake, Carlyle is a prime summer destination for the residents of Saskatchewan, where water is in short supply. With a long history of cabin culture, Martin Tourand, president of Carlyle’s Chamber of Commerce, estimates the population of the town grows by as much as double every summer. 122

enosee Lake is located in Moose Mountain Provincial Park next to Carlyle, and is home to a major attraction for families in the area, the Kenosee Lake Superslide Waterpark. The area hosts many summertime attractions, including fishing, boating, swimming, waterskiing and tennis. There are also numerous hiking trails, playgrounds and picnic areas for cottagers to enjoy while they visit the area. For those not camping in the provincial park there is also the Carlyle Lion’s Park Campground, perfect for recreational vehicles. The campground has a heated swimming pool and hot tub, as well as a children’s pool and playground. White

businesses in town as much as we can, whether they are part of the Chamber of Commerce or not,” says Tourand.
The Rusty Relics Museum doubles as the tourist information centre, and is located in a 1909 Canadian Railway Station. The museum depicts pioneer life in Saskatchewan with a collection of artifacts including a caboose, repair shop, motorized railcar, one-room schoolhouse, farm windmill and more.
Carlyle is perhaps best known for their hugely successful Dickens Village Festival in December, but there are some great events during the summer months as well. Carlyle Boogie Fest is an annual favourite, with a weekend full of activities for the whole family. The event includes a classic car show and motorcycle parade with more than 100 riders participating each year. Funds raised from this event go toward the Carlyle Multiplex. “It’s a close community with a great spirit of volunteerism,” says Tourand. There’s also an annual craft show, Homespun, held every September, featuring world-class arts and crafts for sale.
Known as the “Cornerstone of Southeast Saskatchewan,” Carlyle is a vibrant community located almost on top of the Bakken Oilfield, which provides their main livelihood. This oil town has a lot to offer with more than 120 businesses located within its reach. “Carlyle has it all,” Tourand says. “If you don’t find it here, you aren’t going to find it anywhere.” The Carlyle Chamber of Commerce has recently been revived after a long hiatus. Since they are brand new, Tourand says their focus will be on starting out again and building up the business community. “We’re just trying to promote the

ichael Ellis originally came to southeast Saskatchewan as a pastor in the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. When his time in the ministry came to an end, he was presented with an opportunity to open his own business. With his previous experience working in a bakery, he decided to go for it. Combining his upbeat philosophy and a love for fine things, Michael’s Coffee Shop and Bakery serves high-quality coffee, excellent homemade food and a smile to start your day off right. “There are two key principles I take with me to work every day,” Ellis says. “First, I am constantly reminding myself these people know why I came here in the first place, and if they can’t believe in my food from Monday to Saturday, then how will they believe anything I may try to tell them on Sunday. Second, I want to erase the lines between sacred and secular: I believe everything is spiritual and there is joy waiting for us in many unexpected places. Part of my job is to help people to find those surprises. I believe there is goodness in this world, and you are worthy of this goodness. So, when you have a cinnamon bun here, I want you to feel something deeper than a satisfied appetite. When you have a coffee here, I want you to know that it was carefully prepared for you, and you really are worth the effort we took to get this great drink into your hands.” The shop serves as a popular lunch destination for visitors and members of the community with sandwiches on homemade bread, as well as soups and pizzas. Patrons will tell you Michael’s cinnamon buns are “to die for.” The coffee is thoughtfully prepared and intentionally presented, using the highest quality coffee beans from Western Canada’s premier roasteries. Michael’s provides catering for bigger events, as well as prepared boxes of fresh baking to bring to the office to brighten up the week. “I love when someone calls me up to make an order for a special event in their life,” Ellis says. “With me, it’s about the opportunity to serve people and help them know how special they are. I am humbled by the trust they place in me to serve them.” After seven years in business, Ellis is going strong and maintaining his
bottom line: his customers are worth it. “My customers are just as important to me as my margin,” he says. “If a higher ratio of milk to water in your London Fog will make it a better drink, I don’t mind doing it. I want people to know it’s possible to have a really great thing, and that you are worthy of the effort to give it to you.”
The shop is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Stop in soon! Michael’s Coffee Shop and Bakery 125 Main Street, Carlyle 306.453.2425

Imagine the thrill of being the envy of friends and neighbours with beautifully unique cabinetry that’s not only serviceable, but also long-lasting and breathtaking. Partners Ashton Lisitza and Cary Chatterson welcome customers into their showroom to look over samples of the high quality workmanship of their team. “We talk to our customers and go over their plans with them,” says Chatterson, “if they don’t have plans drawn up, we will take care of that for them.” Once the plans are satisfactory, clients then have the chance to meet with Lisitza or Chatterson and go through a 3D modelling computer program. “The program helps customers see what the cabinets will actually look like before they’re built,” explains Chatterson. He notes this provides an opportunity for any additional design changes. From choosing the colour to the countertop, at Moose Mountain Woodworks your wish is their command. hirlpool appliances, Moen faucets, and custom paint and flooring: these features would excite anyone buying a new home. Step into a modular design at Best Buy Homes’ Carlyle location, and these are the features you will find. “When people see the inside, the first thing they say is ‘Wow!’” says Best Buy sales representative, Tracy Nelson. “The homes are beautiful.” For the past 44 years, Best Buy Homes has given Canadians the opportunity to own a high-quality home at an exceptional value. Its Carlyle
headquarters features designs built by Friendship Homes of Minnesota, one of the largest producers of modular homes for Canadians. “Customers tell us they choose Friendship Homes because we have great floor plan designs, eye catching exteriors and the best kitchens and bathrooms they have seen,” says Chuck Smith, national sales manager of Friendship Homes. Best Buy Homes’ designs include single and sectional styles. The one-module singles start at approximately 1,000 sq. ft. Sectional homes are two modules with a single roof, and start at approximately 1,700 sq. ft. Buyers can customize the carpet, wall colours and linoleum.
Designs start at $89,900, and can be bought right off the lot or custom ordered. Best Buy Homes is also partnering with West Valley Village in Estevan to bring new homes into the community. Tracy welcomes people interested in a modular home to visit Best Buy Homes and discover how much this home style has evolved in recent years. “Everyone who has bought one from me is very happy with the quality and buying experience,” she says.
