DIANE VON FÜRSTENBERG & THE WRAP DRESS By Tonya Lambert
D
iane von Fürstenberg — her name will always be thought of in conjunction with her iconic wrap dress, her astonishing life, and her efforts to empower and improve the lives of women. Born to an Auschwitz survivor, she married and then divorced a German prince. As a young woman, she developed a dress that was not only remarkably successful, but has also stood the test of time. She was a subject of painter Andy Warhol and graced the cover of Newsweek before the age of 30. She partied at Studio 54 and has dated many celebrities. The mother of two and grandmother of four is the owner of a multi-million dollar fashion firm for which her lips are the well-known logo. Her second husband is a media mogul and billionaire businessman with whom she has established a major charitable organization. In 2014, she was listed as the 68th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine. In short, Diane von Fürstenberg has lived a life of such gigantic proportions, it staggers the imagination. In her recently released memoir, The Woman I Wanted To Be, von Fürstenberg credits her parents, Liliane Nahmias and Leon Halfin, with giving her the tools that led to her later success. Her mother taught her to be strong and fearless. Her father gave her unconditional love so she did not grow up to be a needy individual. Since she was young, she has had a fierce desire to be independent and not financially reliant on any man. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I always knew the woman I wanted to be,” says von Fürstenberg.

Indeed, her desire for independence was so strong that she was initially horrified to discover she was pregnant in college. The father was the wealthy Prince Egon von Fürstenberg. She married him somewhat reluctantly. Not wishing to lose her identity within his, she immediately set about establishing a career and income of her own. Having apprenticed with Italian textile manufacturer Angelo Feretti, she decided to try her hand at designing women’s clothing. She had some of her designs sewn up and presented them to American Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, who was impressed — von Fürstenberg knew fabric. When the young designer unveiled her take on the wrap dress, (earlier versions had been around for several decades: Elsa Shiaparelli’s in the 1930s, Charles James’ 1930s taxi dress and Claire McCardell’s 1940s popover dress) it was her use of the curve-

clinging jersey knit fabric that was largely responsible for its tremendous success. Last year, 2014, marked the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Diane von Fürstenberg (DVF) wrap dress. As popular as ever before, it is the subject of a new coffee table book, The Journey of a Dress, and a major exhibition. Von Fürstenberg’s inspiration was not the earlier versions of the wrap dress, but a ballerina sweater; initially designing a wrap top before changing it into a dress. All encompassing, the DVF wrap dress is sexy yet presentable, practical yet pretty, equally appropriate in the boardroom or at a nightclub. Described by von Fürstenberg as elegant and effortless, it epitomizes comfort and confidence by enabling freedom of movement — and, as von Fürstenberg has stated, confident women are the most beautiful.

We’ve since crossed paths many times at Hollywood events, including at a VIP party on the rooftop of The Beverly Hilton during this year’s Oscars week. I enjoyed catching up with Blodwell over the phone recently. LDM: When did you decide this was the career for you?

GB: I grew up in Scotland. My first job was at a men’s tailor shop where I spent all my money getting suits made for myself. Then I was a hippy and went on the road and did all these wonderful things. I lived a very beautiful life, but I wanted to get back into the world so I moved to London. I had a pair of corduroy pleated pants by a company called Browns. They were stylish pants. I don’t know how I acquired them because I was basically a monk. I was walking down the street and I saw the store called Browns and I thought, “This must be where my pants are from!” I walked in and discovered it was the finest store in London, selling Armani, Cerruti, Miyaki… It was the premier store in England. I was blown away trying on all of the clothes and the next thing I know, the owner of the store approached me and offered me a job!
LDM: How did you transition into styling celebrities? GB: I knew George Harrison’s wife and I phoned her up and told her she must have him try this stuff on, that he would go crazy. So I packed up a trunk and took it to George Harrison’s house. I brought him mostly Giorgio Armani and he bought almost everything. He became my personal client. A short time later, Bob Dylan came to town and Rod Stewart as well. Before long, I decided to move to L.A. I was able to secure a job at the premier store on the west coast, which was called Maxfield. It was a tiny store and all the stars would come in. Working with these incredibly well designed clothes with great fabrics and trying them on different people, I honed my skill. LDM: You’ve styled many stars, including Helen Mirren, Drew Barrymore, Sophia Milos, Eva LaRue and Elton John. Are you able to name a favourite client?
GB: One day I returned to the store and Leonard Cohen was standing right there. I told my workmates, “You can have all of my other clients, but this one is mine!” And so he became my client. He would arrive early in the morning and sing songs to me while I made his selections. LDM: You have styled shoots for numerous magazines, including Detour, Ebony, Movieline, Estylo, Entertainment and many more. How did this element of your career evolve? GB: It was after I began working on Rodeo Drive. I met the Italian designers who would bring me their work and the next thing I know I’m in Milan as the editor-atlarge for Italian Harper’s Bazaar. All of these Italians were staring at me wondering, “Who is this man?” I was dressed pretty outrageously on that particular day and I guess it caught their interest. They invited me to my first ever high-end fashion show on the Spanish Steps in Rome, which was Valentino. They asked me to tell them what

I liked and my selections were published in the magazine. LDM: In every success story there is an element of timing and luck, however, you seem to exude an energy that draws people to want to embrace you and present you with opportunities. GB: It seems to happen like that. I am very lucky that I have a lot of love in my heart. I mean no harm to anyone. I truly have love and empathy for every human being. I am happy when others are happy. Lisa Drader-Murphy is a Canadian fashion designer. She has been the creative and driving force behind the Turbine label for 20 years, as well as the exclusive Lisa Drader-Murphy collection. Drader-Murphy is the founder of philanthropic efforts The Turbine Fund and Turbine India Project and has been invited to present her collections during numerous international events such as the Oscars, Golden Globes and Cannes Film Festival.

Learning to dance can be a humbling experience at the best of times. Do it in public and it becomes a daunting challenge for anyone.
T
his January, Fine Lifestyles’ national columnist Lisa Drader-Murphy was invited to participate in Dancing for Our Stars, a major annual fundraiser for Bridgeway Academy. Since she resolves to put herself outside her comfort zone every year, she said yes. “As a child, I was not permitted to participate in dance and was often ashamed of my inability,” says Drader-Murphy. “I don’t know how to dance and this is something I never dreamed I would take on. But, the students at Bridgeway Academy are so brave to take on the challenge of discovering their unique ways of learning. I owe it to them to be brave and accept this challenge on their behalf.” Bridgeway Academy provides individualized programming for students diagnosed with learning disabilities, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. Founded in 1983, the school operates with the notion that people with learning disabilities can learn and do anything if taught in a way that works for them. As an entrepreneur in the Canadian fashion industry, Drader-Murphy has had to create her own opportunities. She learned that perseverance, resilience, and self-reliance helped her over the years and these are the assets she will bring to the dance competition. “I want to encourage young people to follow their passions,” she says. “There are so many different ways to learn… focus on the things that bring you the most happiness and fulfillment. When you are passionate about what you are doing, learning comes much more easily. This is what is so great about Bridgeway Academy and the atmosphere for learning they provide.”

Asanas to Remember: An Intro to
ASHTANGA YOGA By Courtney Tait
N
which postures are practised and what order they are practised in, an Ashtanga session consists of the same set of opening, backbending and finishing sequences each time, along with one of six series that range in difficulty from beginner to advanced.
Developed by Indian yoga teacher K. Pattabhi Jois, who opened the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India in 1948, Ashtanga emphasizes synchronizing each asana (physical posture) with the breath, creating an internal heat that is believed to purify the body.
While teachers typically guide the class, students are encouraged to learn and remember the postures and the sequence in which to do them, making Ashtanga more disciplined than some other forms of yoga. For many students, repetition makes the practice easier to do on their own, as once you have learned the series and sequences, you simply step onto your mat and begin.
So what can you expect from an Ashtanga class? Continual movement and sweat, as well as deep, focused breathing — Ashtanga is a vigorous practice. But what sets it apart from other forms of yoga is the repetition. While most yoga styles feature variation in

These days I see a lot of patients of all ages come in with carpal tunnel syndrome and thumb strain/sprain injuries from excessive smartphone and technology use, such as video games. They can also get weakness in their hands and arms from holding the devices for a long period of time while sitting incorrectly.

3. Positioning of the legs and feet. A lot of patients love to sit cross-legged or with one leg underneath their buttocks. Pelvic and hip joint misalignments occur which can give localized pain, weakness in the legs and issues with circulation. So, what are some ways to correct posture while sitting? forward posture and their feet up on the seat. Whether they are playing video games, on social media and/or reading, children think they are comfortable sitting in a slumped position, unaware of all the damage that is occurring and the problems that may arise down the road.

o you know someone who sits like the child pictured above for hours on end? Have you ever stopped to think about the problems and issues that can arise from repetitively maintaining an ergonomically unsound seated posture? I have been paying attention to how people sit since I opened my clinic 15 years ago, and I am saddened to observe the demographic group maintaining the poorest sitting posture is children. More often than not, children slump in their seats with an exaggerated head

It is up to us to educate ourselves on preventative care and educate our children and the people around us. In practice, I often have patients in their 40s come in for pain management for headaches, neck and back pain, postural imbalances and other issues. Sadly, they were never educated on preventative care when they were younger and are unaware these issues are often preventable. We have the potential to be in our 40s, for example, and have great posture, very little imbalances and hardly any pain. So, what are things to look for to help correct posture while sitting? 1. Sitting in a slumped position. Basically, the curves in the neck and lower back are gone and the mid-back curve is accentuated. The curves in the spine are present to help absorb the forces equally, from gravity especially. By changing the mechanics of the spine, a lot of stress is placed on the pelvis and base of the skull creating problems now and in the future, such as pain and headaches, abnormal bone formation, muscular and structural imbalances and early osteoarthritic changes.

1. Sit upright with both shoulders back and relaxed. By sitting upright, the normal curves in the spine are maintained, helping prevent issues from occurring. 2. Keep feet on the floor without crossing the legs or putting the leg under the buttocks. Remove any objects from the back pockets as well. 3. Refrain from leaning and putting all your weight on the armrest with your elbow. This one I have had personal experience with too, unfortunately. I used to repetitively lean my weight on my right elbow, resulting in months of sharp pain in my right shoulder and in the area near the base of my right neck. Now I know better and I feel better. 4. Keep shoulders relaxed and wrists straight or with a slight bend. 5. If using a laptop, try to use a remote keyboard and mouse and if you are reading, look into a book holder to prop it up. If you have been sitting with poor posture for a long time, please consider correcting your posture right away. As well, consider seeing a Doctor of Chiropractic to realign and balance the spine and correct any imbalances that may be present. Being preventative is a lot better than waiting until there is a major issue present and the body has responded with compensatory and arthritic changes.

he American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has just honoured the first dentist in Atlantic Canada with accreditation status. Halifax Dental Studio’s Dr. Jenine Arab O’Malley, a lifelong resident of Halifax, is distinguished as one of only 14 dental professionals across Canada and 348 worldwide to have achieved accreditation status in the AACD. Dr. Arab O’Malley joined eight other international dental professionals at the 2015 AACD Conference in San Francisco this May to be formally awarded the accreditation honour.

The process was both an empowering and humbling journey for Dr. Arab O’Malley. “The challenges of difficult case selections, the rigorous AACD protocol coupled with the personal and time commitments required a perseverance that I attribute to my father, whose hard work and determination inspired me throughout my educational endeavours,” she says. “It is indeed sad that he could not be here to witness this achievement. How
3D Printing Could Change the FaCe oF PlastiC surgery By Henny Buffinga

D printing is one of the most exciting new technologies to emerge in recent years, most importantly because of the vast implications for almost any industry: manufacturing, shipping, construction, patenting, medicine… the possibilities are seemingly endless. The process works by creating objects one layer at a time, sequentially printing layers of paper, resin, plastic, metal, biomaterial or another material based on a digital scan or model. In medicine, advancements are being made with bio-printing, where the material used in the layering process can consist of skin cells, stem cells or the patient’s own cells, which can create an organ with a lower chance of the patient’s body rejecting it. The $2 billion 3D printing industry is projected to reach $6 billion by 2017, and the field of medicine is welcoming the possibilities of the new technology with successfully printed live tissue and working organs making headlines this year. Plastic surgeons in particular are taking advantage of this new technology in interesting ways. Using 3D printing as an educational tool, surgeons are able to print models of body parts in order to plan complex surgeries. This is the most widely used application of the technology at this time. These precise anatomical models allow a surgical team to evaluate several courses of action before determining the best scenario. The models can serve as a guide to the surgery, where time is critical. Any time saved during surgery means a greater chance at recovery. Another seemingly conventional use of 3D printing is proving invaluable to the cosmetic surgeons. Iranian cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yakub Avsar, for example, is using 3D printing to provide his clients with a more accurate view of themselves and what they would look like post-surgery. Avsar uses this technique with patient’s undergoing a rhinoplasty (nose job) to demonstrate realistic before and after models for his patients. Patients can now see their

new face from all angles and make a more educated decision on their surgery. 3D printing also holds exciting possibilities for aesthetic improvements for procedures such as breast augmentation. The implants could be designed by the plastic surgeon to fit the patient’s measurements and desired changes. This process would provide a customized implant that would suit the patient’s form perfectly. The costs of 3D technology are still high, not least because of the outlay of materials alone, over and above the technology. However, with 3D printers predicted to become more accessible and affordable in the coming years, it is anticipated the technology will become more widely embraced for the many advantages it can provide surgeons, many of them as of yet unexplored, and with seemingly unlimited possibilities for more visually appealing and safe procedures.

any fitness classes are designed for people who are already in good shape. They involve intense cardio workouts and high impact exercises, which can be daunting, difficult and even dangerous for people carrying extra weight. Working out in a traditional gym can also be emotionally challenging. Being surrounded by people in excellent physical shape when you are just beginning to get active can make you feel self-conscious and discouraged. If you are a plus-sized person, you need a place to work out that is both physically and emotionally rewarding in order to be motivated to stick with it. Getting fit is never easy, but it is worth it. Tara MacDonald Fit Club is just such a place. As a plus-sized woman, Tara MacDonald knows firsthand the challenges many people face when it comes to getting fit. “I started doing workshops for plus-sized women in 2004 when I was a business
student at MSVU,” says MacDonald. “I wanted to be around other plus-sized individuals as I worked out and didn’t see any in the local fitness clubs.” Being in a supportive environment is often the key to success in any endeavour you undertake. This is especially true when it comes to getting in shape and losing weight. In December 2014, MacDonald found a space for her workshops and made the decision to turn it into a studio for group fitness, personal training and small group personal training. “We are a small fitness studio,” says MacDonald, “but we have two rooms for personal training, free weights, bosu balls, battle ropes, stability balls and other equipment, such as a universal trainer and treadmills, to offer a complete workout. We believe plus-sized individuals can achieve their health goals. It takes work and it takes time.” The new fitness studio has numerous trainers offering a variety of classes. Michelle Lindsay, a certified personal trainer, offers a seniors movement
class and BURST, 30 minutes of intense fitness. Lindsay’s Bells, Balls and Bands class is especially popular and combines work with kettlebells, stability balls and resistance bands. While the weather is warm, join Lindsay and a group of like-minded individuals in the Nordic pole-walking club. Danielle Melanson, a Beachbody coach, offers PiYo, a combination of Pilates and yoga. Kettleball and kickboxing classes are also offered. In the future, chair yoga and walk leader classes will be offered, aimed at the complete beginner and the plus-sized individual. They will be offering plus-sized workshops three times a year. These will run three nights a week for four weeks with Nordic pole walking, resistance band training and guest speakers, plus CTI coaching from MacDonald herself. f you are considering orthodontics for you or a family member, you may have heard of the Damon System. The Damon System is known for gentle forces, small and aesthetic braces, high technology arch wires and less extraction of teeth. But what could it do differently than a traditional appliance?
Damon System itself is a combination of the high-end Damon brand brackets, specific orthodontic wires and a series of mechanics that your orthodontist uses to create a beautiful smile. The Damon brackets are the attachments, or handles, if you will, that hold the wire against the tooth. Inside the bracket is a prescription that tells the tooth how to move in response to various shaped wires in three dimensions of space. Your orthodontist can design the prescription and customize it to your bite and teeth alignment problems. The Damon brackets have doors that hold the wire in place and create a low friction environment for the teeth to move. The memory wires that are used as part of the Damon System can work for a longer period of time to straighten teeth without getting permanently deformed and needing to be changed. The appliance itself is very aesthetic — the brackets are sleek, smooth, small and low profile and quite comfortable for the lips, cheeks and tongue. The brackets come in a silver metal variety and also in clear for a less noticeable appearance. Both brackets can hold colours but the colours are for decoration only and are worn under the wire, as opposed to on top of the wire, so as not to interfere with the low friction system. For many of us the idea of rosé wine conjures up memories of putting a candle in a just finished bottle of Mateus or quaffing girly glasses of sickly-sweet white zinfandels. But time, tastes and wine techniques change, as do attitudes. When a decidedly masculine Hollywood titan like Brad Pitt starts producing a quality rosé wine, even the most skeptical of the macho men have to sit up and take notice.
R
osé is any wine with a colour spectrum from a barely perceptible pink to a pale red. Quality rosé wines have been produced for millennia in the South of France and it’s an accepted fact that the first wines ever produced were rosés. These wines are still the benchmark for quality; dry wines refreshing enough for a hot summer’s day but with enough depth and complexity to complement a wide array of food. Rosé wines have recently experienced a renaissance, which has driven up prices somewhat, but they still tend to be a very good value for money.

Most rosé wines are created from red grapes by allowing a short maceration of the juice with the skins after crushing. The time of maceration ranges from a few hours for dark pigmented grapes to a day or two for lighter skinned varieties. This allows transfer of colour from the skins. The juice is then pressed or drained away from the skins for fermentation.
Rosé wines pair incredibly well with a diversity of food. From sushi to charcuterie to barbecue, there may not be a better all-purpose food wine. The following are a few selections from our fine Nova Scotia wineries. They are wines worthy of any social gathering or quiet summer sip in the backyard. A bit of sun, a bit of wine, some great food … what better way to bring some colour to our winter weary cheeks? Don’t forget to add a candle to the empty bottle for an added glow — and nostalgia.
Some basic rosés are created by blending a small amount of finished red wine with white, but the hue and flavour of these wines are quite different, and

Our local rosés have a wide range of styles, but the majority has a light sweetness. This provides a pleasing counterbalance to their high acidity, but there are fantastic dry and sparkling wines as well.

4 bone-in chicken breasts 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder 1 tsp onion powder 1 cup hoisin sauce 1/2 cup bottled chilli sauce 1/4 cup sherry 4 tsp chilli garlic sauce 1 tsp minced, peeled fresh ginger 1 tbsp oriental sesame oil 1/4 cup chicken stock Rub chicken breasts with five-spice powder and onion powder. Let sit for two hours. Whisk remaining ingredients, except for stock, in a small bowl to blend. Heat grill to high and sear the chicken skin side down to sear. Grill for five to 10 minutes and watch carefully to avoid burning. Turn over and move chicken to a cooler part of the grill and baste with sauce, continue to cook for about 20 minutes. Turn over and repeat on breast side, and continue cooking until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 74 C. Chicken should cook low and slow. If you wish, you can finish with a final baste on the breast side and a quick sear on high heat to slightly blacken the top. Let chicken rest a few minutes off heat before serving. Add the stock to the remaining barbecue sauce and heat through for five minutes to reduce slightly. Serve sauce on side for dipping. Serve with simple skin-on baby potatoes, scallion salad and some steamed sugar snap peas.
Wine Pairing: Gaspereau Vineyards RosÊ Deep pink in colour. Pronounced cherry and cranberry flavour and silky mouth feel, a little spice and a faint hint of sugar provide added structure to this medium light wine. Serve moderately chilled. Bishop’s Cellar $16

With warmer weather the delicious smell of barbecue wafts through the air of many backyards, tempting even the culinary novice to try their hand as a grill master. Who better to learn tips from than avid griller and celebrity chef michael Smith?
A
purist at heart, Smith told Fine Lifestyles in a recent interview that he prefers to grill over coals from a hardwood fire built himself. His second choice is oldfashioned charcoal, never briquettes. “It’s really all about flavour. There’s an incomparable flavour to building a real fire,” says Smith. “I love the art and craft of cooking. You have the ability to be creative, but there are also a series of steps that ensure success.” According to Smith, there are two major mistakes that people make grilling. First, using sugary sauces as soon as the meat hits the grill. It quickly caramelizes and then burns. This problem can be easily fixed by first grilling the meat and then near the end use the sauce as a glaze rather than a marinade. Another common mistake is trying to cook directly over flame. It’s extremely important to let the fire die down to coals before cooking. Smith’s must-have grilling tool can’t be found in any culinary store. “I love my welding gloves, I have picked up logs that are glowing cherry red and moved them by hand. They are an amazingly useful tool.” Perhaps Smith’s most interesting advice is on eating local food. “When you buy local you meet people who actually produce it. To me that’s what is missing from our food today. Too many people don’t understand that food is made by people; it’s become very impersonal.

When we put that sort of humanity back into our food, it changes us, it makes us better cooks and makes us engage with food in a more meaningful way.” Smith is currently building a monument to his favourite type of cooking in his home province of P.E.I. He recently purchased the Inn at Bay Fortune, returning to the kitchen that launched his career. The centrepiece of the restaurant will be an altar fire, an open fire kitchen that will provide him with seven different methods of cooking with fire. “We are building a 25 foot long wood burning, fire breathing beast. It’s something we haven’t found anywhere else in the world.”

IngredIents 1 whole pineapple, skinned (uncored), cut into thick rings 2 red onions, sliced into a few very thick rings a few generous splashes olive oil a sprinkle or two sea salt and freshly ground pepper 1 lemon, zest and juice few handfuls fresh whole basil leaves
Procedure Preheat your barbecue or grill. evenly brush or drizzle the pineapple and onion rings with olive oil and season to taste with salt and pepper. Try to keep the onion rings intact as you do. Grill the pineapple until golden grill marks appear and the fruit softens, about five minutes per side. meanwhile, grill the onion until soft and lightly charred. Quarter the grilled pineapple slices into wedges and roughly chop the onion rings. Toss everything with the lemon zest and juice and as many whole basil leaves as you can get your hands on.

Halifax wine enthusiasts supported Live Art Dance Productions by taking part in a Victoria Day afternoon wine tasting at Seasons by Atlantica. The event offered participants the chance to learn about eight wines. These were complemented by some extraordinary amusebouches, prepared by Seasons’ chef Luis Clavel, a member of Culinary Team Canada. It was also the first opportunity for Halifax audiences to learn about the seven new shows scheduled for Live Art Dance next season and purchase subscriptions at early bird prices until July 15.

The money raised from this event helps support Live Art Dance, which brings worldclass dance companies — such as Ballet BC, Out Innerspace Dance Theatre and others — to Halifax. “This was a wonderful way to celebrate what we do and what’s coming up next year,” says spokesperson Emily Pettet.

Live Art Dance Productions will launch its 33rd season in September with works from some of the top dance makers in the world. One of the anticipated highlights is November’s unique Rendez-vous: 40 Silver Dart Dr. by Montreal’s 2ième Porte à Gauche, which brings the audience behind closed doors at the Alt Hotel and into the lives of four fictional couples to achieve a level of intimacy that’s virtually unattainable in a traditional theatre. H
ow do a young Canadian university student named Terry Fox and a determined African-American woman named Rosa Parks find themselves in the lyrics of a song written by music legend, Tom Cochrane? According to Cochrane, both Terry Fox and Rosa Parks are the personifications of fearless doggedness that changes situations and impacts lives. Cochrane recalls the day he first heard about Fox and his mission. “It was a rainy day in late August 1980 and the band and I were on tour. We’d been stuck in the tour bus for what seemed like forever and, to be honest, I was feeling very sorry for myself. I was tired and I just wanted to be home with my family. We were driving on the highway approaching Thunder Bay and the traffic was slowing down. I looked out the window to see what was going on and saw this kid running on one leg in the rain and shivering. That did it for me! I wasn’t complaining anymore!” It was the following day that Cochrane heard about what Fox was doing and that he had to cut his run short. “I can’t tell you how much I’ve thought of that image of him running in the rain, running the good race and fighting for freedom from cancer... just as Rosa Parks was fighting for freedom,” he expresses. Take IT Home The song The Ones that I’ve Known is just one of the incredible tracks on Cochrane’s newest album entitled Take it Home. With a classic grass roots, folk rock style, Cochrane relays a theme of inspiration and hope when times get tough.

Another stand-out song is Pink Time, the tale of a long haul truck driver devoted to his wife, who has dementia. “It speaks of how love can manifest itself in so many ways,” remarks Cochrane. “He understands that his wife’s essence is still there, but she’s just on a different plane than him and he accepts her.” There are autobiographical elements to the album as well. A Prayer for Hope stems from a trip to Africa taken by Cochrane when working with the humanitarian organization, World Vision. The song tells the story of a mother dying of AIDS as she prays for her daughter, Hope. The single Diamonds refers to the diamonds on the pages of our memories. Its truly inspiring melody encourages us to savour every aspect of life. makIng a DIfference Humanitarianism is important to Cochrane; he’s shown his support for organizations such as World Vision for many years. “We’ve been sponsoring children since the 1980s, but it was when Terry David Mulligan asked me along on a trip to Africa that I really got to see things firsthand. It was a very humbling experience for me. As an artist, it’s easy because I just show up and do my thing and move on, but the people who work in these organizations face it every day. It’s amazing, the things they do,” he humbly states.

Cochrane’s philanthropy has also been associated with other worthy causes such as War Child, Amnesty International, Make Poverty History and more. He’s been the recipient of the Canadian Music Industry Humanitarian Award in 2005, Allan Waters Humanitarian Award in 2013 and the Henry H. Knowles Humanitarian Award in 2014. When asked about his charitable work, Cochrane simply replies, “It’s a very seminal part of who I am as an artist and a citizen.” Cochrane continues to touch and inspire his audiences both internationally and at home. His spiritualism, music and charity work have motivated many of us to reach outside our comfort levels and stretch ourselves to grow and become better. inding the right accessories to complete your home and create the right atmosphere is an art. Peggy Reid and Ashley Bryant from Reid & Siemonsen Design Group have some decorating advice for incorporating luxury accessories into your home. “We are seeing a lot more colour coming into our designs this year,” says Peggy, the owner of Reid & Siemonsen. “For a long time it was neutral on neutral, but just like women’s fashion, home design has moved more towards bolder colours, which is exciting to design with.” Before shopping for the perfect home accessories, choosing a colour palette can help you develop a cohesive look in each room. A great way to start is by choosing something you already own that you love. “Sometimes clients will have a gorgeous rug or a signature piece that they want to incorporate into the room,” Ashley says. “It can be helpful to have that one piece that they love to pull colours from and use as a starting point for the overall look of the room.”
Great Room The great room is the main focus for decorating enthusiasts, as it tends to be one of the most popular spaces for families to gather. Peggy recommends choosing an exciting fabric as a jumpingoff point. By finding a fabric you love, you can begin to pull colour and pattern into your space. Mixing patterns can add a lot of interest in the room as long as you remember to have a variety of scale, texture and prints while keeping consistency with colour. Patterned fabrics can be used in a variety of ways, from draperies to toss cushions. flexibility for art and accessories. “Toss cushions can add colour and texture, and allows you to mix patterns that you might not be able to mix otherwise,” Peggy suggests. “Adding trim to the cushions or upholstery pieces can create a more custom look while adding a little bling to the room,” Ashley adds. A simple way to update your room is by changing light fixtures or drapery hardware to warmer metal colours such as gold or brass. This can go a long way toward staying on trend. “Everything was stainless or chrome for a long time, but things are moving towards warmer tones now,” Peggy explains.
Dining Room Creating a fabulous tablescape can add fun and interest for entertaining guests. A bright floral arrangement can set the tone for the room for each season. White or neutral coloured plate sets will also be advantageous for these seasonal place settings and allow you to change napkins, candles and other accessories easily.
The dining room is also an ideal space to have a more daring paint colour or interesting wallpaper. Glamorous drapes can also add a dramatic element to the room. Choosing the right chandelier enhances the room and is often the focal point and can create some sparkle to the space.
Master Bedroom Similar to the great room, this is a wonderful room to experiment with fabrics and use different textures. “A lot of men don’t like having too many decorative pillows on the bed,” Peggy laughs. “But it does look glamorous and romantic to have a variety of colours and layers. The bedding itself can be fairly neutral, but adding pillows with fabrics such as silks and velvets will provide a luxurious feel to your space. Fabrics offer a lot of options for mixing and matching, and can help you easily update your bedroom to suit the current design styles.” The other end of the scale is to have a more minimalist bedroom, she says, which can still be very tasteful and beautiful. Tailored, fitted bedding offers clean lines to give the room more of a European style.
Kitchen A great way to add colour, pattern and texture to the kitchen is through an interesting backsplash, which can be a combination of metal, glass or stone. If you have an island or bar in the kitchen, you can have a lot of fun adding different fabrics on the seats of the bar stools. With metal or wooden stools you can add a pop of colour by painting the whole frame to suit the room. Lighting is very important in a kitchen; choosing a variety of pot lights and pendants provides task lighting as well as helps you achieve the look you are after. The two-storey, 4,000 sq. ft. space, owned by entrepreneur Yang Lu, was completely renovated before opening in mid-May. It now features some of the most unique, high-quality lighting on Canada’s east coast.

The highlighted plants that follow are either what I want or already have in my wee garden. My actual list is much too long for publication, so I’ve chosen this select offering.

Bergenia “Flirt” is a handsome yet diminutive selection of the ever-hardy and trusted workhorses of its parentage, great for the shadier Canadian garden. Typical of this genus, the foliage ranges from a dark glossy green through stages of red and maroon. Considered to be an evergreen, I have yet to appreciate that aspect, as my plants are under snow cover for the longest time. This wee gem offers the small pocket gardener a wonderful perennial addition with promise of pink flower clusters early in the season. It’s also for those who have just a corner to add a new selection.

Coleus Colour Clouds “spiCey” is one of a great many new introductions in this popular and easily grown genre. For the past number of years, Coleus has regained immense popularity and with good reason. New gardeners have little to no difficulty achieving success with Coleus; their range of foliage shape, size and massive range of colourful combination are intriguing and their price point is usually reasonable. A shade tolerant or preferred plant, Coleus can be nipped backed to encourage a bushier habit; the cuttings root can very easily be
the popular lime green foliage of many plants so popular this decade. Heuchera are amongst my favourite perennials because they are basically worry-free and reliable in my zone 2b garden with a decent leaf mould cover for winter. The selection abounds sporting vivid coloured foliage, a vast array of leaf shapes and, in many cases, attractive venation in the leaves. “Forever Purple” will find a home in my front garden in the dappled shade of an American Elm tree with neighbours of Thalictrum, perennial Dianthus and a lovely perennial geranium for texture. tHaliCtrum “BlaCk stoCkings” plays a critical role in my front, southeast-facing garden. I just love this perennial and will continue to sing its praises at every possible opportunity. She stands tall with her jet black stems supporting a filamentous foliage reminiscent of Columbine. When she blooms, typically later in the season, great clouds of powder puff purple fill her corner on centre stage of the garden. The Winnipeg winds haven’t bothered her yet as she defiantly stands her ground — totally hardy, massively reliable and above all gorgeous. Have fun shopping, studying the new and notables and, of course, play in your garden. It’s been a long winter indoors. The 25-foot off-grid solar sunflower holds five solar panels and powers its own LED lighting system in the store.
“The sunflower is generating a lot of positive attention,” says Peter Giannoulis, owner of Farmer’s Best. “It’s a perfect calling card for the garden centre and for solar energy. Sunflowers can grow to 18 feet tall and are a natural marvel for sun collection. People are stopping to browse the garden centre and to have their photograph taken with the giant sunflower.” Known for its staunch support of local farmers, Farmer’s Best always has new produce coming in from farms as soon as they’re ripe. At the moment, there are many varieties of Nova Scotia apples as well as rhubarb and melons. If you’re looking for unique specialty items, Farmer’s Best is the place. Quail eggs from Bridgewater, goat cheese from Greece and chocolate from Germany are all on hand. Citrus produce imported directly from Greece as well as a wide range of Greek
olives, olive oil and olive-based body products are also on offer next to dry and canned foods from countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and many others. On the other side of the building, work on the site is underway. Window Types Explained
Windows: Repair or Replace?
F
irst, check for draf ts, condensation and fogging. Then ensure the casings are in good condition and free of rot and mould. Make sure caulking has not deteriorated and maintains its seal. You might just be in for a weekend DIY project instead of an entire overhaul. If you decide to replace the windows, make sure you opt for energy efficient models that maximize the amount you can save on your energy bills, keeping your space cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. Look for windows that are low-e (low emissivity) which reflect the heat to the warm side of the glass (to the inside in winter and the outside in summer) and have a good u-factor rating, which determines how well the window prevents heat loss. If you’re planning on selling your house in the next five years, new windows are a major selling feature; it’s one of the top five things potential buyers ask about a home. In my experience, good quality, energy efficient vinyl windows will give you the most bang for your buck.
Doors: The Unexpected King of the ROI Dollar for dollar, replacing your existing front door is one of the best returns on investment projects you can do. Your front door is the focal point of your home’s façade. And don’t forget about your door hardware. High quality door hardware complements and completes the look of the door and, more importantly, ensures your home’s security.
Casement: Casement windows swing in and out like a door and are operated with a crank. They offer a high level of ventilation and have a tight seal when closed. You often find them in hard to reach or awkward places (like above a kitchen sink) because they’re easier to open. Double-hung: One of the most common types of windows, it consists of two sashes that move up and down. These windows are great for ventilation. What they lack is energy efficiency, as they often leak more air into homes than other types of windows. PiCture: Picture windows are large and fixed, usually flanked by two casements or double-hung windows. Picture windows are big and dramatic, allowing for a lot of natural light and unobstructed views. However, this style is definitely “just for looks” as they offer no ventilation.
You can always opt for a makeover instead of replacement. A fresh coat of paint and upgraded hardware will make a dramatic difference in curb appeal. While you’re at it, update the elements around your door as well, such as house numbers, mailbox, doorbell and exterior lighting. On their own, these are all small elements, but together they add up to a front entrance that looks stylish and well-maintained.
bay: Bay windows are typically made up of one large fixed window in the middle and a casement on either side. Take caution when installing; bay windows are large and very heavy, meaning you must ensure there is adequate structural support.

Not your Grandpa’s Caddy Since GM’s revamp in 2009, the Caddy has deliberately been reclassed from a senior’s touring car to a sportier ride — like the CTS-V that can hold its own against the Camaro, the Mustang and others. Owners may choose between a quick-shifting manual transmission and the automatic with steering wheel-mounted magnesium paddle shifters. Both options provide an exciting sense of the driving experience as they shift gears for optimal performance.

Many of us watch the Super Bowl for the halftime commercials, and Lexus’ “Let’s Play” advert was one of the best this year. Setting the tone for their playful 2015 lineup which premiered this last fall, Lexus’s focus is on their all-new RC luxury coupe series.

ne of the top brands in terms of both reliability and quality, the luxury division of the Toyota Motor Corporation is bringing some excitement to this year’s coupe category. With inspiration taken from the IS C convertible as well as the latest GS and IS sedans, the RC is a whole new design. Lexus’ first pure coupe in over 15 years, the RC stands for Radical Coupe. As a latecomer to luxury coupes, Lexus made a bold statement with their first entry in the field. The RC 350 comes standard with a 306 horsepower 3.5 liter V6 and an eight-speed Sports Program Direct Shift (SPDS) transmission for rear wheel drive models, plus a six-speed automatic on all weather drive models. This allows for greater fuel economy, smoother acceleration and near instant gear changes at your fingertips. But all this power means nothing if it can’t meet the road, so the RC 350 sits on equally impressive 18-inch split five-spoke alloy
wheels or optional 19-inch ten-spoke alloy wheels for that added swagger. The exceptionally responsive handling is due to the RC’s new ultra-stiff platform, drawing inspiration from the chassis of the highly acclaimed GS series and the rear of the new-generation IS sports sedan. The RC 350 also offers drive mode select, which includes eco, normal and sport modes. With the simple turn of the dial, the car can become more responsive or more efficient. Upgrading to the RC 350 F Sport edition gives a sporty interior, including an LFA supercar inspired gauge pod with a sliding bezel like the one in the IS. The package also includes four-wheel steering, adaptive dampers, 19-inch wheels and high-friction brake pads. The RC F is a step up from the 350 in terms of looks as well as speed. Increased performance is the result of standard Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and

the Lexus Handling System, including rear-wheel steering. The RC F is named for the Fuji Speedway, a motorsport racetrack in the foothills of Mount Fuji acquired by Toyota in 2000. To live up to its namesake, the RC F is equipped with a powerful 5.0 liter V8 engine that delivers an impressive 467 horsepower, and blasts from zero to 60mph in 4.4 seconds. On the track, this combination allows the RC F to hit a top speed of 269 kilometres per hour (167 mph). With so much horsepower rumbling beneath your feet, you need to be confident you can safely rein it in. For high-performance braking, Lexus employs race-proven Brembo six-piston monoblock calipers mounted on 14.9inch slotted and ventilated discs up front, and 13.5-inch slotted and ventilated discs in the rear. The RC F’s cockpit features track-inspired instrumentation, including a full colour LCD multi-information display within the

gauge cluster which allows the driver to easily read the data to achieve optimum performance. The in-dash display also shows incoming calls, current song selection and more. The RC F’s infotainment system is almost as impressive as what is under the hood. Controlled by the Lexus’ Enform system, it puts navigation, climate control, weather and traffic data at your fingertips using the Remote Touchpad. The touchpad uses swipe and flick features similar to a smartphone, with ample touch area and pulsation feedback. The new Lexus Enform Remote mobile app also allows drivers to remotely start their engine from their phone, as well as locate the car in the parking lot, check the status and control the windows and doors, and even check the fuel level. Owners can set alerts if the car exceeds a predetermined speed. With comfortable interiors, the backseat of the RC coupe is bigger than many in this class. However, while it may technically be a four-person car, most drivers will find themselves using the backseat for overnight luggage while the golf clubs occupy the trunk. Wrapping a racetrack-worthy car in Lexuslevel refinement is proof that in the coming year this company is more than ready to meet any competition head on.

I
t all started with 112 avocado green electric can openers. In 1977, Bob Circosta was a talkshow host for an AM radio station when he was approached by the station manager with a situation... a client had paid the station in product. “When the manager asked me to go on-air and sell these can openers for them I thought he was crazy,” he chuckles. To Circosta’s surprise all the can openers sold that day. “I was in total disbelief,” he recalls. “I’m not sure what it was that did the trick, possibly because I had some credibility to my audience as a newsperson.” That was 37 years ago and the home shopping experience has far surpassed many expectations. LIFE’S A PITCH! As a home shopping guru, Circosta has had plenty of experience with sales and marketing over the decades. This has inspired him to write his book Life’s a Pitch, which outlines numerous key elements to successful sales and marketing. Over the years, many have encouraged Circosta to write a book about his work with various celebrities and high profile people. “Rather than doing something like that, I looked at writing something that would help people. I wanted to write something readers could refer to as a resource manual.” He adds that he purposely wrote a book that was not about him, but rather about assisting seasoned business owners and entrepreneurs. SELLING OR SERVING? So, how do you become successful at selling? According to Circosta, the key is not to sell a product. “Take a step back, look at the product and ask yourself, ‘how is this going to help others?’ ” He encourages business owners to advise their staff that they are not selling, they are serving. “Don’t sell,” he advises, “Serve. Help every customer achieve their goal.” Talk about the product and how it can benefit your customer. For example, if you own a shoe store, what you are really selling is style and comfort. Focus on the end result. If you buy these shoes, they will look great and be so comfortable your feet won’t hurt at the end of the day. “This is not a
gimmick, it’s built on complete honesty,” he adds. Being dishonest will only discredit you and you won’t receive a strong repeat clientele. HEALTHY COMPETITION Circosta notes that when it comes to keeping the competition on their toes, customer service is the key. People purchase from a comfort level. Don’t sell to your customers; provide a service and go to great lengths to serve with excellence. Develop relationships with your clientele and they will be loyal to you. Follow that rule of thumb and you won’t have to worry about being competitive. PUTTING WORDS INTO ACTION In conclusion, Circosta says the onus is really on the business owner. If he/she wants a truly successful business, it’s ultimately up to him/her. “I can share technique, but it’s up to you to take action. Gather the information and apply it. If you do it wrong, that’s okay. Everybody fails at something. You’ve just got to do it yourself to succeed.”

Golfing The Truro Golf Club, one of several courses in the Truro area, is known as the Jewel of the Hub. Many summer visitors return year after year to enjoy the course and the service. The 6,317yard, par 71 layout features well-manicured fairways, white sand bunkers and water in play on 10 of the 18 holes. Built mostly on marshland, the course is a very easy walk, and both pull and driving carts are available. The remarkable gardens on Dalhousie University’s Agricultural Campus in Bible Hill are inspiring places for visitors and area residents to enjoy a peaceful moment and to learn a little about the nature around them. The two most popular destinations are the Rock Garden and the Alumni Gardens. The rock garden covers more than half-an-acre and boasts a thriving collection of stunning, and somewhat uncommon, plants. It consists of a rock face, two dry streams, a gravel scree bed and a damp area. The Alumni Gardens is an ideal setting for family time, quiet time and photography. The campus also has a butterfly meadow and herb garden for people of all ages to enjoy.
Music lovers will want to add Truro to their list of summer destinations. Truro’s Concerts in the Parks was the winner of the Central Nova Tourist Association’s Festivals and Events Award for 2015. Each summer, the Town of Truro offers free outdoor concerts at two of its scenic parks. Every Friday night in July, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., local musicians are featured in the gazebo at Riverfront Park. This natural phenomenon happens twice a day and has been a huge draw for visitors to the Truro area for generations. One hundred and sixty billion tons of water sweep in from the Bay of Fundy and force the Salmon River to flow in the opposite direction. The tidal bore phenomenon is unique to the Bay of Fundy, with the Cobequid Bay and the Salmon River helping to create this spectacular display. The incoming tide is extreme as the ocean water moves up the narrow neck of the bay, which temporarily reverses the flow of several rivers that empty into the bay, creating a notable wave known as the Tidal Bore! Tidal Bore Rafting River rafting in Nova Scotia? Who knew? The Shubenacadie River is the only place in the world to experience tidal bore river rafting! hronic venous insufficiency is the disease underlying varicose veins of the legs. For some, this is primarily a cosmetic problem, but many have pain or other symptoms and will even eventually suffer unhealthy skin and ulcers. It is a common problem; we see hundreds of patients with venous disease in our clinic every year.

Compression stockings are important for patients with varicose vein ailments. There are also a variety of procedures that can be helpful. Aimed at ridding the legs of diseased, refluxing veins, these procedures improve venous circulation, diminish varicose veins and decrease the severity of the disease overall. Traditional hospital-based surgical stripping of refluxing saphenous veins and excisions of varicosities are still practiced and covered by provincial health care. It requires fairly long wait times, a general anesthetic, several incisions, some risk of complications and usually at least moderate pain in recovery. Despite these drawbacks, with the appropriate preoperative assessments and in the right hands (and once recovered from the surgery) it serves patients well and improves their quality of life. Private, office-based and minimally invasive alternatives to surgical stripping include endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy(USGFS). These procedures

have been developed to improve upon the surgical approach to venous disease, especially to lessen both the procedure wait times and post procedure recovery and discomfort. EVLT starts with the patient lying on a stretcher and washing the leg with an antiseptic. Ultrasound is then used to access the saphenous vein, often at the bottom of the thigh, and then to inject water and anesthetic around the vein. A laser fibre is then placed and the vein is destroyed with heat as the laser is drawn downward. The patient feels the needle injections at the beginning, but then usually feels nothing or only minor warmth as the vein is treated. UGFS of refluxing saphenous veins starts the same as laser ablation. Once the vein is accessed though, it is not necessary to inject fluid around the vein since the vein is treated with a sclerotherapy solution rather than heat. UGFS is a bit quicker and involves less needle poking than EVLT. However, it is not as consistently effective as laser ablation, especially for larger veins.
Whether the veins have been treated with EVLT or UGFS, at our clinic, pressure dressings and fitted compression stockings are applied. The patient immediately gets up and we encourage about half an hour of walking exercise before going home. Most have minimal discomfort in the following days and weeks and find it easy to follow our directions to get lots of walking exercise; most don’t require time off work or activities. We follow up in a few weeks to ensure the targeted veins are gone and there’s been no complications. Often at that time, varicose veins will already have diminished and the patient will already feel better than before the procedure. We will often then do some simple sclerotherapy injections of any remaining varicose veins. It’s important for people with varicose veins — especially those who have pain or unhealthy skin — to be assessed by experts in venous disease who can advise and offer all of the various options for treatment, tailored to each patient’s unique situation.

HM: I’ve had to develop thick skin and become physically capable of the demands of a very physically demanding job. SD: One of the biggest challenges is being taken seriously. I’ve often heard when greeting people, “do you sell cars?” or “do you get the coffee around here?” How did you overcome these challenges? LS: I listened a lot and adapted to my customer. Male customers require the necessary time to earn your trust and respect. HM: Hard work, support of other women in the business — and humour. LS: We work as a team. Everyone has an area of strength we capitalize on. What advice do you have for women interested in a career in this field? LS: Pursue it. There are days when it’s very rewarding and you feel good that you were able to make a difference in someone’s day. HM: You will need strength, determination and to be able to laugh at yourself.

MF: Learn your stuff. The best way to be confident is to have the knowledge to back it up. SD: Know your product and listen to your client’s needs. Why is it important that women work in the auto industry? LS: Women feel empowered when they have the option of a female on staff to take care of their needs. HM: Diversity fosters an enlightened and enjoyable workplace. If employees are happier, they take care of customers better. If customers are happy, business is good. SD: Women make more than 80 per cent of car buying decisions. Any dealership that is not marketing to women is missing the boat. I enjoy walking women through the buying experience as someone she can relate to. What challenges do women customers face? HM: The perception is women are generally less knowledgeable about vehicles and feel at the mercy of the men fixing their car; not the case… having women in the shop helps ease their mind. There is a sense of trust. What can women do to improve their experience as customers? I picked up several things from there we’re going to implement here and at our new location. We want to be aggressive with our pricing on a national level.” As the business continues to grow and succeed, Way is now using his leverage to support Nova Scotian families dealing with autism. hile some printing shops in the city are closing their doors, Minuteman Press is striving forward and continuing to grow. The 22-yearold family business, owned by president Mike Maheux, now has three locations, including Cole Harbour, Burnside and Halifax, and employs 25 staff members. They attribute their success to having a vested interest in every client that comes through their doors. “If a client needs something, we’ll get it done — even if it means working on it all night,” says Kris Webster, manager of Minuteman Press’s Halifax location. “We care about our customers and our philosophy is that your business is our business.”

ook around the next time you’re out and take note of any printed sign you see. The experts at Pulse Signs and Designs may have created it. And if they didn’t make it, they could have. Due to demand for signage creation and installation at their Minuteman Press shops, president Mike Maheux decided to delve into the business 12 years ago. He began with basic equipment and has since added a state-of-the-art large format printer and boom truck and has been doubling his business every year. Pulse Signs and Designs specializes in storefront and interior signage, printing
for outdoor products such as vehicle graphics or hotel signage, and all manner of business and trade show advertising and marketing material. “We build things to last,” says manager Michael Maheux. “And we have a deeprooted interest in our clients’ businesses. ric Milledge’s English Tudor home in St. Margaret’s Bay is unusual for the area. And its roof is definitely unique. The rolling lines have no eaves or down spouts and feature 16 charming dormers. Finding a professional roofer to replace it with quality work was proving a challenge for Milledge until a friend in the construction business referred him to Mader’s Roofing. “He said he only knew of one person in Nova Scotia he had confidence in for doing a quality job on our very unique roof design,” says Milledge. “That was Larry Mader.”

Mader’s Roofing put a new 50-year roof on the home and brought it up to modern day installation specs. It was one of the largest, steepest and most complicated roofs Mader has ever worked on. The impressive finished product was recognized by roofing engineers as a truly unique feat. Roofing in Dallas. The round-table meeting and informative seminars brought Mader up to speed on a variety of industry updates. This winter, Mader’s Roofing worked on many roofs that failed due to improper installations or use of incorrect materials. He even saw roofs that were only four or five years old fail and have to be re-done. Mader says a good roof should last 25 years — and will if he does it. “In my opinion,” says Milledge, “Larry Mader is the consummate professional.

hen Tarah Wright and her husband Daniel Rainham, both environmental science professors, built their new Halifax home, they wanted it to be both warm and ultra modern. They knew that using wood would make that possible. But how and where the wood was cut was just as important to them as its beauty. The couple turned to Amos Wood. “Jeff Amos is just as concerned about

environmental issues as we are,” says Wright. “That’s why we went with him. He tries to be as sustainable as possible and he does beautiful work. We knew he’d be able to get us the wood aesthetic we were looking for.” Juxtaposed with two glass walls, their queen-sized bed, made from a huge piece of live-edge black walnut wood, anchors the room like a piece of art. The tree was cut by a sawyer Amos knows in Scotland, Ont., an area with forest on the outskirts

of arable land. Wright and Rainham appreciated hearing the story behind the wood because it allowed them to make their own connection to it. When they showed the new dining table to their two young children, Amos pointed out different parts of the wood where branches had come out of the tree and explained how he matched up pieces for the most beautiful effect. Amos first selected two planks of black walnut wood from the same tree. The planks were
flipped right and left for the outside of the table and a third plank from the tree was chosen for the centre of the table, complementing the colour and grain pattern for a stunning composition. Amos Wood also made the doors for their utility shed and supplied the wood used on the family’s main stairs and bookshelves, as well as part of their exterior wall covering. “For us, using wood adds an element of warmth to a modern home,” says Wright. “We stayed true to our modern aesthetic and Jeff was very much about keeping the angles and lines. He also works surprisingly fast. Once we approached him, it was a matter of weeks to a month to get everything planned and done.” Amos Wood makes a wide range of products including exterior siding and
trim, interior trim and wall coverings, interior and exterior doors, decking, beams, flooring, mantels, countertops and furniture for home, office or commercial purposes. All furniture pieces are one-of-a-kind and custommade. Much of the wood he uses comes from the Maritimes, including all the wood used for interior and exterior wall coverings and flooring.
