I arrived in Rome in late summer, just as tourist season was winding down and the fashion season was winding up. After 25 years in fashion design, this was my first trip to Italy and I was excited to experience firsthand — and be inspired by — the storied, iconic fashion houses and the street wear that inspire them.

aiting for my friends to arrive, I had a cab drop me off at a random location near the Spanish Steps, where I wandered around for hours enjoying the sights, smells and sounds of this amazing city. As I window-shopped, I watched the people on the streets and tried to get a sense of how Dolce & Gabanna, Versace and Armani had influenced them in their fashion and lifestyle.

Looking back into the history of Italian fashion, it isn’t difficult to understand what gave Italy such status in the fashion world.

In 1951, Count Giorgini started the ‘Italian Fashion’ craze when he organized an international fashion show in Florence.

He continued to present fashion shows at his palace, bringing new collections, often modelled by nobility, and incorporating Italian fine art. These shows contributed to elevating the international status

influenced this place, but the other way around. The history, art, architecture and landscape — the very soul of Italy — has defined its fashion houses.

In the ’70s and ’80s, Milan made its mark as the fashion capital of Italy, and the phrase “Made in Italy” became universally recognized as representing the height of quality.

Downtown Rome is a cobblestone melting pot of high-end fashion, discount shops, outdoor bistros and street vendors. I took in the array of locally crafted leather handbags and shoes and was overcome by the smell of coffee and fresh tomato sauce. After purchasing five handbags I made one last acquisition — a wheeled duffle bag to haul them around in for the remainder of my evening.

Eventually I settled at a private table at a tiny restaurant on a side street, ordered a caprese salad and a glass of “vino rosso” and indulged in people watching.

The street wear was both subtle and ostentatious. Flowing dresses, highwasted skirts, billowing sheer Frenchcuffed shirts, pointed heels, vibrantly coloured clutches and petite bags were prominent. These traditional semblances of beauty and refinement were contrasted further by women’s bold appropriation of typical men’s styles, including baggy men’s pants paired with feminine tops, chunky shoes and busy line patterns.

Over the following days I met many wonderful people. Most were locals, but some from abroad, and all happily immersed in the culture and lifestyle. I quickly realized Italy is a place where people work to live, where friends and family come first, and where their rich and incredible history isn’t something that’s trapped in a museum but is lived and breathed every day.

After a week of this wonderful country, it hit me: Versace and Armani have not

To begin the appointment, we like to give the bride an opportunity to pick a handful of dresses to try. “We’ll let her get into the dresses she’s picked,” says Akerman, “and then we’ll listen to what she likes or doesn’t like about them. Listening to a bride is the most important thing we can do to help guide her.”

Her consultant will select some dresses based on her information and what she says about the dresses she’s tried.

“It’s common for a bride to be torn between two very different dresses,” says Akerman. “We try to help her narrow it down as much as possible.”

If the idea of shopping for a wedding dress on a busy Saturday is a little daunting, brides can schedule a Diamond Appointment. This is a private consultation outside regular business hours with the entire bridal floor open only to the bride and her party. The appointment time is extended to three hours with an experienced and knowledgeable member of the team there to help.

Customer Tanya Steadman says she and her bridal party had a lot of fun at Chester & Felicity with their salesperson, Micky. “The atmosphere, Micky’s personality, help and ideas were the best,” says Steadman. “I will forever recommend the store!”

Off the Bridal Path

You may remember Princess Diana’s gown. If not, a quick Google search will jog your memory. Her dress was big, with puffy sleeves, layers of lace that covered her forearms, and a train that billowed behind her as she entered the St. Paul’s Cathedral.

“I

t was the biggest dress of life,” says Angel Spendlove, co-owner and designer for & For Love, a contemporary bridal fashion house founded in Toronto. “But that was the ‘80s. I think brides now want to go back to being simple and elegant and not so crazy. It can be small and intimate and still be special,” says Spendlove.

“Think Bianca Jagger’s pantsuit and how different and cool it was in the ‘70s.”

Spendlove describes an evolution in bridal-wear, starting with the simple elegance of the 1920s and moving to the bohemian-chic era of the 1970s. “I think it’s slowly getting more relaxed,” she says of the modern bride. “The last 20 years got really strange.”

Even ball gowns, prom dresses and pantsuits are viable options for the big day. In fact, looking at the boards on Pinterest, it’s not uncommon to find pins of everyday dresses for inspiration such as when Keira Knightley re-wore a Chanel cocktail dress for her wedding. “It’s off the rack, and it’s fun,” says Spendlove. “Now more than ever, brides are more in tune with what they want.

It really does go back to the bride’s personality and the wedding environment — it influences the dress choice so much. We’re all not the same, so why should our wedding dresses be?” & For Love, Oscar De La Renta and Claire Pettibone wedding dresses are sold in Kleinfelds, Toronto’s premium wedding dress shop located in the Hudson’s Bay Company.

La Renta debuted its 2013 Look 33 — a white sequined bird’s nest knit sweetheart column gown with a blue tulle tiered overskirt that provided its something blue right to the dress.

Many wedding designers are opting for pops of colour on the runway. It also isn’t surprising to see a wedding dress that is one full colour either. “I have a friend who wore a tangerine dress for her wedding inside a pub,” recalls Spendlove. “She looked absolutely beautiful.

However, I still prefer white — although I do like pale blushes and grays for a hint of colour.”

Many of & For Love’s creations are white with a relaxed fit such as its Amy Sheath gown, which features a v-neckline, opened sides, a fully beaded waistband and a fishtail skirt. The dress is embellished with faux pearls, crystals and gunmetal lace.

Spendlove says, for many women, the environment of the wedding has a huge influence on the dress as well. A forest wedding may evoke A Midsummer’s Night Dream gown such as Los Angeles fashion designer Claire Pettibone’s Raven wedding dress — made with black tulle and embroidered with pink and red roses.

n her first visit to Halifax Naturopathic Health Centre, Ingrid Foshay Murphy sat with her doctor for more than an hour, discussing every question she had about her health and lifestyle.

hen I walked into my first Bikram yoga class in Montreal I had no idea what to expect,” says Kristin Johnston, owner of Bikram Yoga Halifax. “Not only did I not practice yoga, I definitely did not practice yoga in a hot room.”

A thorough intake consultation with trained staff determines the sodium chloride concentration emitted by the generator to treat the client’s specific condition.

The number of treatments required depends on the client. For example, a relatively healthy adult with chronic sinusitis might come 15 times for one course of treatment. Later in the year, that client may come back for another course of treatment. Consider a child with a significant overbite, where the top teeth are ahead of the bottom teeth by a large amount. A lot of children with such an overbite can look like they have “buck teeth” and a small lower jaw that looks like it is too far back. Teeth that stick out too far forward are more prone to trauma and breakage. Growth modification appliances, when used at the right time during pre-pubertal growth, can reduce the overbite substantially. For a lot of children, a growth modification appliance can improve the profile of the face and balance the jaws. Not all patients are good candidates for these types of appliances. If you suspect a bite problem, it is imperative to have your child screened by an orthodontist to see if he or she would benefit from such treatment. Frequently, growth modification prevents jaw surgery in the future. It is always better to improve a poor growth pattern than to correct the result of one later with an operation.

When a child is growing into an underbite, the top front teeth sit inside the bottom front teeth. A lot of these children look like their lower jaw is prominent; meanwhile, it is actually their upper jaw that is not growing forward enough. By using a special headgear appliance, which is worn after school and overnight, we can make the upper jaw grow properly and correct an underbite. In fact, we prevent a surgical correction in approximately 80 per cent of underbite patients in our practice. A screening by age seven is very important for our patients because the optimal age for this therapy is usually between eight and nine years of age.

Crossbites of back teeth and narrow upper jaws are also issues that can be corrected with growth modification appliances known as expanders. Palatal expanders actually increase the width of the upper jaw so the lower jaw can properly relate to an upper jaw that was previously too narrow. These expanders also create additional space for teeth. Sometimes these crossbites can cause a shift in how the teeth line up when a child bites. Such a functional shift in orthodontics can cause asymmetrical growth and must be intercepted as soon as possible, ensuring growth continues in a symmetrical fashion.

Orthodontics, in our clinic, is as much about preventative treatment and interceptive treatment as it is about braces and aligners to correct poor bites, crooked teeth and misaligned jaws. Having your child screened at age seven can prevent severe problems that require more invasive and complex solutions once growth is complete. Growth modification therapy is a comfortable way to change the way a child’s jaw is developing or growing to create a balanced profile, a good bite and a lovely smile.

Harmful daily lifestyle choices you should consider include stress, poor posture and ergonomics, poor diet, lack of exercise, lack of belief in the power of one’s own innate healing, and having an imbalance in the mind, body and spirit.

It’s important to realize the body has a natural ability to heal. We all have an immune system controlled by the nervous system. Emotional, physical and/or environmental stress can all impact the nervous system and affect the immune system.

The spine has a direct relationship with how the nervous system functions. When a segment in the spine is not moving well, it affects the nerve that leaves the spine from that segment. The corresponding area responds by affecting the muscles and movement in that area. Pain may also be present, but not always. Chiropractic is great, as it is a way to naturally restore movement and alignment to the spine — thus helping the nerves function better.

Also, with chiropractic care, the body can better handle the stressors placed on it.

Babies are great examples to use. If their mid-back area is “restricted,” they tend to exhibit acid reflux and an inability to lie on their back for a diaper change or sleep.

The nerves in the mid-back area supply the digestive system. It has been reported that chiropractic care aimed at gently restoring the alignment in this area has helped minimize the issues quickly.

Through continuing education, I found a great system to obtain a picture and report on how a patient’s neuromusculoskeletal system is working.

The CORE score system was developed to provide a measurable wellness goal to attain. The CORE score is described as a way “to accurately report on the efficiency of your central nervous system.” It gives an indication of where and how deeply the problem is affecting the spine and overall health.

The CORE score is made up of the following three measurable tests: 1) HEART RATE VARIABILITY: It indicates how one can adapt to the environment. Stressful lifestyle habits can cause the body to be in a constant “fight or flight” mode. This can lead to exhaustion, weight gain, accelerated aging and poor heart health. Chiropractic care can actually increase the heart rate variability into a positive score.

2) MUSCLE TONE AND BALANCE (SURFACE EMG): It indicates how the muscles are functioning to maintain one’s posture and support and move the spine.

As the nerves control muscles, muscle fatigue and poor energy distribution, indicated in this test, can be helped by chiropractic care.

3) ORGAN AND GLAND CONTROL (THERMAL SCAN): It indicates how the autonomic nervous system is working. Temperature differences along the spine are indicators of where stressors are building up.

Again, chiropractic care can help improve this as well.

A patient can be assessed in the clinic for all three tests and have a CORE score calculated. Basically, the best possible CORE score is 100. entle and effective skin rejuvenation with LED light energy makes not all light bad for us. As we mentioned in part one of this two-part series, light is measured in wavelengths and harnessing some of these wavelengths has created great strides in skin rejuvenation. LED light therapy is an amazing example of this type of technology.

I have been working with LED light therapy for more than 10 years, but it all started in 1903 with a scientist winning a Nobel Prize in medicine for the use of light therapy. By 1960, research had progressed and phototherapy (now LED therapy) was used mostly in Eastern Europe for the treatment of chronic pain, arthritis, joint rehab, soft tissue injury and other medical ailments. During the 1980s

Why does the light from this device not damage the skin like the light from the sun does? There are many wavelengths of light that come from the sun. Some are visible and some are not. Some damage the skin and some do not. The sun emits harmful UV (ultraviolet) light waves that can do more damage to our skin than good. ith her new album, Shine On, and recent U.S. and Canadian tours, beloved singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan is looking to the future with hopeful optimism.

“All my albums are postcards of where I am emotionally in my life,” McLachlan tells Fine Lifestyles in an interview just weeks before leaving on her cross-country fall tour. “I tend to tell stories about my own experiences through music. I feel like I have worked really hard to come back to a place where I feel strong and whole again, and Shine On reflects that.”

In just a few short years, McLachlan faced a crisis of identity with a divorce, the death of her father, a split from her manager of more than two decades, and a failed reprisal of Lilith Fair. With a near complete collapse of her support system, she released Laws of Illusion in 2010. It was punctuated with the anguish and grief of that period of her life, a stark contrast to Shine On. After the chaotic

period of change, the artist has found light at the end of the tunnel and is embracing life with renewed enthusiasm, drinking up every moment.

The dedicated mother of two girls — India Ann Sushil, 12, and Taja Summer, seven —McLachlan credits her children for keeping her afloat through the hard times. “My girls are my biggest and most beautiful distractions. I was very lucky to have them when I was fairly established and could take time off to just be a mom. It has opened up my heart exponentially and I get to see the world through their eyes,” says McLachlan.

For the vocalist and musician who has sold more than 40 million records, won three Grammys and eight Junos, McLachlan counts her Vancouverbased Sarah McLachlan School of Music among her greatest achievements. The free after-school music program draws droves of youth, sparking their creativity and nurturing a love of music.

There are almost 700 kids in the program this year, making a very real change in their lives.

Drawing inspiration from Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkle, Willie Nelson, Joni Mitchell and other North American folk music, as well as Gaelic and Irish music, McLachlan has developed a unique sound all her own — a sound she has stayed true to throughout her career. She says there will be no pop or jazz albums in her future just to stay on a Top 10 list.

“The best advice I ever got about my career was from Annie Lennox when I opened for her in New York many years ago. She said, ‘Don’t let anyone sway your heart.’ It’s advice I really took to heart,” remembers McLachlan.

This year has seen McLachlan’s return to the electric guitar, releasing in her words a more wild side to herself. Being proficient in both guitar and piano also gives the artist the ability to work through songs with different instruments, often creating those coveted breakthrough moments in the writing process. “There are no mathematical equations to finishing a song, it’s different every time.

The important thing is to stay open and knowing when to quit.”

“I feel very lucky to have been doing this for 26 years and that people still want to hear my work. There are a lot of ways to view success, I am my own harshest critic and knowing I’ve done my best, worked as hard as I could and was true to myself is important,” says McLachlan.

The artist’s eighth studio album, Shine On contains song dedications to McLachlan’s father (Song for My Father and Broken Heart), her daughters (Beautiful Girl) and boyfriend, former NHL player Geoff Courtall (Flesh and Blood), whom she met at a Sarah McLachlan School of Music fundraiser.

Shine On also includes a song that was originally about bullying and the

strength of the female spirit, which later became an ode to education activist Malala Yousafza, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt in 2012.

While on tour, McLachlan returns to her childhood home of Halifax, the scene of relentless childhood bullying and her musical awakening.

At the tender age of four, McLachlan began learning to play the ukulele and taking voice lessons. “When I was a kid I wanted to be Joan Baez, my mom always had her music playing. I was drawn to beautiful melodies. I loved the feeling music gave me; it lifted me and nourished me. I was always singing for as long as I can remember, it was always in my head,” says McLachlan.

Though writing her own music takes more time (there are often three to seven years between albums), the end product is well worth the wait. It creates a more authentic sound for her fans that she loves to share. “Performing live is a culmination of all the blood, sweat and tears I have shed spending months, if not years, on something. Writing is a very isolated experience, so it’s great to be able to finally share it with people.

There is a unique energy that is created playing live.”

At 46, the artist has seen a lot of shifts in her life and in the music scene as a whole, but she has stayed true to herself and her sound through it all. Looking forward, McLachlan is planning to make the most out of every second she has. “If I am lucky my life is half over. I have been taking a good look at my life and thinking how I want to live it. I want to do as much as I can, have as much fun as I can, live as much as I can, love as hard as I can and give as much as I can. I want to shine, not just endure, to suck the marrow out of everyday. When you put forth that energy and light you get so much back,” says McLachlan.

Neptune Sets the Stage

et in 1920s Canada, What a Young Wife Ought to Know tells the romantic story of Sophie, a young working-class woman who falls in love with a stable hand. Award-winning playwright Hannah Moscovitch, 36, found inspiration for the story by reading a book of letters written to Dr. Maria Stopes, a pioneer of the birth control movement in the 1920s, from women asking how they could prevent pregnancies.

“They were so miserably desperate,” says Moscovitch. “There were women who were 27 years old who’d had 11 children, some of whom they’d lost to starvation, and who’d had several miscarriages as well. I got to see what a pre-birth control society must have been like and I had never read anything like it.”

Moscovitch is thrilled to premiere What a Young Wife Ought to Know at Neptune Theatre this winter as part of the theatre’s seasonal lineup. She says those who enjoy HBO projects like Boardwalk Empire or Mad Men will enjoy this show.

Neptune’s artistic director George Pothitos couldn’t be more thrilled with the

talent taking the stage this season. “From a nostalgic holiday classic like A Christmas Story, to a hilarious Hitchcock spoof in The 39 Steps, to an exciting co-production with 2b theatre for the debut of What a Young Wife Ought to Know … it truly is an incredible lineup of live theatre.”

Gracyn MacDonald, 12, is one of eight children performing in Neptune Theatre’s production of A Christmas Story. MacDonald plays Esther Jane, a classmate of Ralphie’s. “She has a huge crush on him,” says MacDonald. “And that kind of consumes her life.”

Even if you don’t know the 1983 movie, MacDonald is certain you’ll enjoy the play. It features all of the elements from the beloved film, including the pink bunny suit, a triple-dog-dare to lick a frozen pole and the infamous leg lamp. “I think everyone can relate to Ralphie wanting that one special gift so badly,” she says.

Halifax actor Rhys Bevan-John, 34, is returning home from Los Angeles this January to play (approximately) 18 roles as a clown in The 39 Steps.

The 39 Steps is one of Bevan-John’s favourite pieces of theatre. In fact, two years ago he performed in Theatre New Brunswick’s production of the show.

“To my taste, it’s perfect,” he says. “I like playing the super over-the-top characters like the professor and Mrs. McGarrigle, a cheeky old Scottish lady.”

Lake Chelan: Washington’s Other Wine Country

I

had the great fortune to visit the West Coast of the U.S. this past August. A business trip to Montana seemed a good excuse to spend some time in neighbouring Washington wine country. After researching the usual American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) of Walla Walla and Yakima, we decided to visit Washington’s newest AVA, Lake Chelan. Although it only received official status in 2009, grapes have grown there for more than 100 years, and the first licensed winery began in 1998. You won’t find Lake Chelan wines in stores outside the area, but the sheer variety and style of wineries and wines make this a fantastic wine destination.

Before making its mark as a wine region, Lake Chelan was already a popular holiday area. For oenophiles with or without children of any age, this is as

good as it gets. Lake Chelan has a myriad of activities, including hiking, endless water sports and great golf. Some wineries feature family-style outdoor barbecues along with tastings, and koi ponds and playgrounds to delight young ones. For grownups, there are companies that offer limousine services for wine tours at a reasonable rate.

With more than 20 wineries in a 30 km radius, it is impossible to describe them all, but here are a few gems we visited: Tsillan Cellars Tsillan Cellars is a stunning Italian villa of a winery, towering over the lake with a vast array of grapes under vine, including Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Syrah, Pinot Grigio, Gwertztraminer and Viognier. Casual fine dining indoors and out in opulent surroundings make it a must-stop on

your wine tour. Sinistra, an Italian-style red blend and Sempre Amore, a fragrant white blend, were two terrific finds.

Tunnel Hill Winery and Karma Vineyards Nestled lower on the same slope is Tunnel Hill Winery.

It’s small, folksy and friendly, with historic architecture and the best Pinot Noir we tasted in the region. Just down the road from Tunnel Hill, we found Karma Vineyards, a funky little winery producing fantastic traditional method sparkling wines using Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Syrah. Their 18 Brix restaurant offers excellent local cuisine on a charming patio in the summer, and cosy fireside dining in cooler weather.

Something about this tiny north-facing area of the region seems to make great Pinot Noir.

Hard roe To Hoe Vineyards On the other side of the lake we discovered Hard Roe to Hoe Vineyards.

Celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit of a man who rowed miners across the lake to a brothel in the 1930s, this winery seemed a bit too gimmicky on the surface to be any good. The bubbly, pretty and knowledgeable young woman behind the tasting counter soon washed away that notion by pouring a ridiculously good Rosé called “Shameless Hussy.”

She delighted in showing us the gold medal this wine won at the Finger Lakes Awards in 2014. Their Estate Cabernet Franc 2013 scored 91 points in Wine Spectator, and their “Nauti Buoy” red was one of their several gold medal winners at the Washington Wine Awards. This is a winery that taught me not to judge a wine by its label.

We will return to Washington at some point to visit the more well-known wine regions, but for wine lovers and adventurers alike, Lake Chelan offers immense diversity, food, outdoor activities and great wine, all wrapped in a package of incredible scenery. It’s well worth getting off the beaten wine path.

Heat through. Add pasta and cook just until properly combined and heated.

Tomato Sauce 1 cup diced onion 2 tbsp. garlic 2 cans diced tomatoes 1 tbsp. toasted fennel seed 1 tsp. dried chili flakes 1⁄4 cup dried oregano or 3⁄4 cup fresh, finely chopped Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently until most of water has evaporated and desired thickness is reached.

hen you think of amphibious vehicles like, for example, hovercrafts, The Jetsons theme song may play in the back of your mind alongside a futuristic blinking sound. However, while George Jetson’s amphibious vehicle can fly through space, the ones currently being developed and used are a little more down to earth.

American inventor Oliver Evans developed the first known self-propelled amphibious vehicle called the Orukter Amphibolos in 1805 — although it’s since been disputed whether it successfully travelled over land and water under its own steam.

Fast-forward more than 200 years and there’s not much to be disputed now.

can be seen cruising through deserts, gliding over lakes and sometimes even submerging under water.

One of the most successful forays into the development of amphibious vehicles is California-based WaterCar, which established itself as a company to watch in 1999 for developing and marketing amphibious vehicles. “Growing up in southern California I was always involved in this kind of industry,” says WaterCar founder, Dave March. “We looked at the Second World War amphibious vehicles, which were real slow and realized we could do something better. We saw an opportunity.”

March says when they began developing their first model, millionaires from around the world continuously approached WaterCar looking to purchase their own amphibious vehicle. March has even taken a deposit from the Prince of Dubai. “We became overwhelmed by the reception,” he says. “We were doing it more for fun than anything else.”

For March, what started out as a personal challenge to build the world’s fastest amphibious vehicle, turned into a successful and exciting career. “We weren’t really sure whether people would be interested in what we were

After 14 years filled with successes and failures, it was in 2013 that the amphibious model, Panther, achieved the quality, reliability and maintainability March was looking for. “Each Panther is a custom-built vehicle,” says March.

In January 2010, March broke the Guinness amphibious speed record with WaterCar’s Python model. “I was driving,” recalls March, “and I was both excited and concerned because no one had ever gone

that fast. We used a tremendous amount of caution.” March says the Python model reached speeds from 150 to 200 mph and looking back, he says, “I eventually became comfortable with the high speeds because once you get out there, it’s really cool. I can’t express what it’s like every time you drive one of these models.”

WaterCar broke new ground when it came to developing amphibious vehicles.

It boasts a dozen different models that

can go off-road, above water and even cruise down the highway. Models like the Turnkey Minus, which is a Panther package and includes everything you need to cover for land and water, is one of those vehicles.

According to WaterCar’s website, all one has to supply is a new, rebuilt or a used Honda 3.5 or 3.7 V-TEC Engine and a 091 VW bus Transmission, along with your choice of custom paint and design.

March says he was surprised by the various ways clients used their models. “It’s been used in many ways we hadn’t even envisioned,” he says. “It’s very convenient for people who have an island and use it to travel to and from, as well as on land.”

their yachts when they encounter ports with restricted access. For those looking into purchasing an amphibious vehicle, the Panther is currently offered in three states of completion: Rolling Chassis, Turnkey Minus and Complete Custom.

he weather encountered during a Canadian January is often less than balmy! Indeed, this may be why so many Canadians are found aboard cruise ships sailing exotic lands, enjoying the warm weather of the tropics. I for one will be soaking up the sun from Jan. 16 to Feb. 3, 2015 aboard yet another exotic adventure with Oceania Cruise Line’s beautiful Regatta.

As the enrichment lecturer aboard, my responsibility is to enhance the already spectacular 18-day itinerary with itineraryspecific regular presentations, related to plants and peoples of the regions we visit. This voyage originates in Miami and meanders along the coast of Central America to the famed Panama Canal through which we have a daylight transit — spectacular! Roughly halfway through the itinerary, we will sail along the Pacific coast of Ecuador for several days until we reach neighbouring Peru.

Docking in Lima for two days allows for an expedition to the famed site of Machu Pichu.

Oceania regularly offers itineraries that include airfare as well as many of the “a la carte” options one would pay extra for on other lines. One example is dining options in the specialty restaurants, Toscana and the Polo Grill, requiring only a reservation and no additional fee. Actually, on a previous cruise we received a note from the concierge with reservations already made for us as we just hadn’t had time to make them ourselves. The Toscana experience was exemplary but not over-the-top fancy. We felt extremely welcome and very comfortable dressed in country club casual attire — no tie for me and most men weren’t wearing jackets.

If you like to dress a bit more “uptown,” that is perfectly fine too, and you do see some passengers who indeed dress up.

I often slide a jacket on simply because it hides a multitude of sins (and my tummy) after several days of cruise food. On occasion, we are invited to a “Captain’s Reception” and we do dress appropriately, including a tie and jacket for me and a dressy outfit for my wife. This affair typically happens once on an itinerary — very impressive events indeed.

Oceania is very much a family, and that attitude and respect comes across in everything a guest experiences, including special functions with senior officers. Recently, on an Amazon expedition, the cruise director made a point of chatting with every individual sitting on the pool deck and addressed most by first name. This level of dedication and incredible customer service is a hallmark of Oceania and not to be underestimated. Never have I felt any crew member was just being courteous out of obligation; their approach was always genuine. This sincerity was not applied specifically to me because of my position as speaker; it was standard and consistently remarked on by others. As a matter of fact, on our Amazon expedition more than 60 per cent of the passengers were repeat guests — that speaks volumes. Ask anyone who has sailed Oceania, and I suspect the response will be similar.

This itinerary aboard the beautifully refurbished Regatta is very popular; actually many categories are wait-listed. Mid-sized vessels (680 guests), tremendous guest services, the best food at sea, and a very interesting lecture series makes Oceania’s Regatta and this journey an absolute delight. I invite you to review the cruise and come along for the time of your life — no regrets.

In the event your specific category is sold out, as they do rapidly, you might consider joining me in October 2015 on a grand journey from Istanbul to Dubai. t’s been a rocky road so far this year for the largely rookie Halifax Mooseheads. Seemingly unable to get a winning streak going of more than a couple games, the 2014/2015 season looks to be more of a developmental year for the team.

“We have a young team. Every game we play, every hour we practice, they’re learning more and getting better. Hockey isn’t just physical; it’s a mental game as well. When you get over excited or disheartened it can drain you physically.”

This rough season has not dampened the enthusiasm of fans. All of the Mooseheads home games have been well attended, with an average of more than 7,000 — second only in attendance to the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) standings — numbers that will surely grow as the season progresses.

Now ranked 14th overall in the QMJHL, the team has had more than their fair share of injuries. Early in the season Jessie Lussier was out with a broken wrist and Cavan Fitzgerald was sidelined with a broken kneecap. During this year’s Battle of Nova Scotia against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, several Mooseheads

players were involved in stunning collisions and when the two game series was done, two players were off the ice.

Captain Ryan Falkenham is out of the game for six to eight weeks with a lower body injury, a blow after his hip troubles from last season. Alternates Nikolaj Ehlers and Austyn Hardie, along with the rest of the team, will need to pick up the slack.

Centre Brett Crossley was the victim of a dirty hit from Pierre-Luc Dubois — who was suspended indefinitely for elbowing a player in the head. As a result of the collision, Crossley has been benched with a concussion. With so many shuffles in the lineup, it’s hard to get a consistent performance whether a team is full of veterans or rookies.

ne of the most important elements of a home’s curb appeal is the visual impact of the front door. This is the where the “welcome” extended to friends and family begins, and where homeowners can truly

make a design statement.

Choosing a style of door is a big decision. Most importantly, homeowners should select a front door that matches the architectural style of the home. Here are some popular house styles and the corresponding door styles that complement the design genre.

Victorian: The appreciation homeowners have for this style lies in its ornate decorative touches. The architectural detail found in the scrollwork, trusses and arches resonate a luxurious vibe, and the style of door is no different. Often, Victorian houses have panelled doors with window insets, and are usually a dark, elegant colour. Either a single or a double door entrance is well suited, given the space.

Modern: These minimalist, sleek homes are designed with a “less is more” philosophy. Known for simplicity (not to be confused with “boring”), doors tend to be a slab style, which may or may not be accented with window panels. Glass is often

used throughout the interior of this contemporary design, so we sometimes see entire glass doors on modern houses.

Colonial: This European-inspired home, known for its geometric symmetry, typically features raised-panel wood doors. The doors themselves are either a natural wood finish, or painted to add a pop of colour. Narrow sidelights and transom windows work well with this style of home, and all trims are decorative.

Bungalow: Homeowners are naturally drawn to the cosiness that comes from a bungalow, and the door is the first invitation to come on in. Typically, doors are flat panelled with simple casings.

Depending on the exterior style of the home, the door can be painted or left as a wood finish. Glass, quite common in bungalow doors, is rectangular in shape.

While the aesthetic function of your front door is to make a good first impression to your guests, its practical function is to withstand natural elements. Between the sun, wind, rain, snow and extreme temperature fluctuations, we demand a lot from our doors.

Wood is a material known for its beauty

and versatility. For doors to be left with a natural wood appearance, oak, cherry maple, walnut or mahogany are the top choices. Paintable wood doors are best made from softer woods, such as pine or hemlock. Solid wood doors are exquisite additions for your home, though they demand upkeep to ensure natural expansion and contraction don’t do damage. An option some homeowners take advantage of is wood veneered doors that are less susceptible to warping.

The durability of steel makes it a top choice for homeowners. However, don’t classify this material as too drab for your front door. Best when painted, steel doors will not warp, crack or twist over time.

They have a higher R-value than wood doors because of the insulting foam in their core. Steel doors are also available in high-end finishes, such as a stainable, laminated wood veneer. Aluminium is another hardy material for your front door, as it has a baked-on finish that will never rust or require repainting. If you want the wood look but are steering clear of a true wood product, opt for a fibreglass door. It can be easily replicated to look like real wood, although it will need re-staining every few years.

Bold, vibrant colours give style and elicit a “welcome” to visitors. While individuality and artistic expression should be practised, there are basic guidelines to keep in mind when choosing a colour for your front door. When faced with narrowing down your top colour choices, opt for a complementary colour that plays off your home’s exterior. Another easy option is to select a natural shade, as they tend to go with almost every colour imaginable.

When truly stuck for a colour inspiration, pick up a hue you’ve already established in the yard or with front porch accessories.

Never underestimate the power of accessories. Symmetrical placements, such as lighting or potted plants, go well with any architectural style. Don’t shy away from embellishments or mouldings: these can be added strategically to update a door. If you prefer more artistic additions, why not consider custom ironwork that still allows light to enter the door’s window, but adds an extra layer of security as well? If there is no porch or covering of your entranceway, your door can be accented with a pergola (best with a bungalow) or even a copper canopy (against a classic brick Colonial).

Amos Wood

hen people buy from Amos Wood, they do so for a variety of reasons.

Some want to identify with the wood origin or species, or the people making their products. Others come for unique custom-made products they can’t get anywhere else. But all Amos Wood clients receive the same high standard of service and material, whether they are buying flooring, fireplace mantels or custom-made furniture.

The company offers unfinished solid wood floors in widths of five to 11-inches.

Industrially supplied flooring generally ranges from two-and-a-quarter inch widths to four-and-a-quarter inches. Flooring lengths at Amos Wood can run from eight to 12-feet. “Our prices reflect the quality of the stock,” says owner Jeff Amos. “They cost more than industrially-supplied solid wood, but the wider and longer board floors have a whole different feel to them.”

The flooring comes in a beautiful range of woods. In softwood, tamarack, clear red spruce, clear Eastern hemlock and knotty pine are available. In hardwood, white ash, red and hard maple, yellow birch, red and white oak, black cherry, black walnut and tulip wood can all be made into flooring.

uring Atlantic Home Design’s first year of business, in 1984, owner and design consultant John Hattie grew the company from 15 projects to 85, impressing clients with the custom home plans he created literally in front of their eyes.

Thirty years later, John continues to be one of Nova Scotia’s most successful home designers. A leader of innovative design that prioritizes quality of lifestyle and the correlation between land and home, John has won multiple home design awards, and his designs can be found throughout the province and beyond. “I’m a dream maker,” he says. “I take people’s dreams

and make them come true in their homes.

Prior to starting Atlantic Home Designs, John worked as an architectural draftsman with Colonial Homes, which specialized in pre-fabricated homes.

While he gained design experience with the company, he felt restricted by the limitations its system posed, with no consideration given to the features of the land on which the homes were built.

When he launched Atlantic Home Designs, John aimed to fill a niche between the draftsmen and architecture

roles in the industry, with the design process starting not with the home, but with the land. “At the time, nobody was designing to the land,” he says. “I looked at the lot, the slope, the trees, and created the house to fit the land.”

This approach has been the foundation of John’s design process for the last 30 years. The result? Exceptional homes and renovations ranging from traditional to contemporary styles, built with the properties’ restrictions and features in mind, such as views and the direction of sun.

the elements, and I make them aware of aspects such as traffic flow and light. The custom design process is very rewarding if you are working with a good designer, because the house will work for you, enhancing your livability and excitement of your home.”

John’s design flexibility and emphasis on catering to his clients’ needs have resulted in innovative features in his homes, such as a 2.5 storey interior courtyard. “The client told me they always wanted an interior courtyard, but everyone else had said you can’t have them in this climate. I said, ‘If you do it right, there’s no reason you can’t.’ That first winter, they had a 17foot high Christmas tree.”

This enables him to respond immediately to the clients’ visual and verbal feedback, asking questions, clarifying needs, and making adjustments on the spot. “The whole time we work together is a collaboration,” says John.

remarks. I design to the twinkles in eyes and grins on faces.”

Once John’s sketches are complete, one of the company’s draftsmen draws the final plans, which are then ready for the quotation process and permit approval system. Clients choose their own builder, who constructs the dream home John designed.

For clients trying to visualize their future home, seeing sketches as they’re being created allows them to jump in with questions, concerns and ideas as they come to mind, without feeling hesitant to make changes. “I am very good at listening to the needs and requirements of my clients,” says John. “We discuss all

One of the first designers in Nova Scotia to incorporate insulated concrete form (ICF) technology into his home designs, John prides himself on being open to trying new products. Atlantic Home Designs offers energy efficient options and is well versed in the use of passive solar, which John refers to as “chasing the sun.”

John was the founding president of Nova Scotia Home and Building Designer’s Association, through which he continues to educate members on current products and construction techniques. “As a designer I stay very current within our association, which is based on education and more education,” says John.

Well known in the industry, John has formed relationships with contractors, builders, and other experts who appreciate the extensive knowledge that goes into his detailed home plans. Brian Mourre, a general contractor who has done business with John for more than 20 years, says he has recommended him to clients many times. “This has worked in my favour because they are happy to work with him and pleased with the end product,” says Mourre. “I have never been disappointed in his product, and his attention to detail is impressive.”

Twelve of John’s homes have won awards, presented by Natural Resources Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Home Awards, and Nova Scotia Home and Building Designers Association. But John says for him the biggest reward is visiting his clients at their home after its been built, and hearing how excited they are about living in it.

“I want people to be ecstatic about their homes,” says John. “I had a client from 28 years ago come up to me at a home show, and she said, ‘John, we still love our home. People who come over for the first time still say, ‘wow.’’ That’s the success I’m looking for with my clients. I want them to say ‘wow,’ not just for one or two years, but for 30 years.”

ucked away in what looks like a Dartmouth warehouse, Carson Exports holds some surprises for car aficionados. “Most people have no idea there are cars in this building,” says owner Carson Way. “At first, customers come in and they ask where the cars are.

Then, when they’re taken to the showroom, they see cars they’ve only seen in magazines or on television, and they get excited and start taking photos. There have been some great reactions.”

At the time of Fine Lifestyle’s interview, Carson Exports had a number of exciting models in the 7,000-sq.-ft. showroom, including a Mercedes SL63 — the only one like it for sale in Canada.

There were also two Nissan GTR sports cars, one from 2014 and one from 2009. “They’re extremely rare and perform like a Ferrari or Lamborghini,” says Way. While those special vehicles are considered exotics, Carson Exports also has a wide range of high-end vehicles, such as BMWs, Mercedes, sports cars, pick-up trucks and imports from Japan, which it will sell locally or export abroad. Approximately 40 to 50 cars are kept in the indoor showroom and a number of cars are on display outside as well. At night, as many cars as possible are moved indoors.

At this time, the company was focusing on exports to dealers in Sweden, China and other worldwide destinations. “We were just looking for a place that was fairly low-key because a lot of the cars we export are very high end,” says Way. “A lot of which can’t be left outdoors on a traditional lot. Some vehicles sit for a couple of weeks before they leave the country, and people would want to look at them.”

As people discovered the cars moving through the area, they began to ask Way where he got them and if he could help them find similar vehicles. Since 2008, Carson Exports has been selling vehicles locally and now offers the same warranties and financing from all major banks found at any car other dealership. Their showroom has just undergone a major overhaul that includes new epoxy-based flooring, lighting, and walls to make the area even more inviting to customers.

“We’re the only indoor car buying experience around that I’m aware of,” says Way. “There are other showrooms, but not like ours. There are a lot of dealerships in Ontario that are 90 per cent indoors like ours, but we’re unique in that respect in Nova Scotia.”

The boutique car dealership offers a different experience to clients, “without any corny sales tactics to buy,” says Way. His staff of 15 — including sales, service and detail — is very passionate about Carson Exports and about the industry. Way says, “I’ve got a really good team of people who want happy customers.”

Customer Andrew Kaulbach says, “There’s an awesome group of people at Carson Exports; and lots of beautiful cars and trucks to choose from. Carson Way and Ken Eastman are great to deal with. I’ve now bought two cars from them and both times the experience was great. I will continue to go to Carson Exports whenever I need a vehicle.”

Ways says one reason for their success is they do a lot of market research and price aggressively. “Some of our inventory might only have three comparables in the Maritimes,” he says. “Generally, we try to be the absolute lowest — based on price for niche market vehicles and cars that are difficult to find.”

they have dreamt about for years, is one of the most fulfilling aspects of Way’s job. The other is handling some of his own dream cars. “One of the first cars I sold was a ’62 Chevy Corvette,” says Way, who was 19 years old at the time. “I was nervous as hell and shaking when I drove it, but it was a big thrill. Now, we’ve gone through a number of high-end cars, but every now and again, there’ll be a car that still gets me going.”

Way comes by his love of cars honestly. His father, Jack Way, began selling cars when he was just 16. By age 19, he owned a Studebaker franchise dealership on Main Street. After Studebaker folded, he spent time selling cars in Los Angeles before opening a successful dealership in Toronto, which he later sold. In 1987, he moved his family back to Dartmouth

Way is now using the success of the business to support a cause his family cares about deeply. The Carson Exports Walk for Autism, which supports Autism Nova Scotia, will be held June 13, 2015 in nine cities and towns across Nova Scotia.

“So much of the work Autism Nova Scotia does goes unnoticed,” says Way. “My six-year-old son has benefitted from many programs.

“Dad worked here until the day he died of lung cancer in 2012,” says Way. “It’s really a family business.”

Providing the optimal blend of creative minds, agricultural and oceanic produce, the province has quickly placed itself on the culinary map with celebrity chef visitors like Chuck Hughes and Anthony Bourdain.

“W

e are delighted with the international calibre of our visiting delegates, industry heavyweights as well as the international and Canadian chefs that attended our event,” says Michael Howell, executive director of Devour! From its humble beginnings as a retro film festival in 2009, the event has grown into a star-studded affair that turns the bucolic setting of Wolfville into a buzzing metropolis for foodies and the culinary-inclined. Featuring a mix of food films, great meals and workshops, Devour! has carefully cultivated their recipe for success. “We are really lucky to live in the kind of place that attracts talented people to make their home. We have a unique blend of land and sea, chefs, producers and farmers that creates greatness, and our programming reflects it,” says Lia Rinaldo, managing director.

Sifting through 200 films, the Devour! team curated 55 new food and wine films for festival goers to enjoy. “Food films are often seen as hard-hitting documentaries.

At the festival, we want to educate but also enlighten and entertain people,” says Rinaldo. As part of the first annual celebrity curated movie, Anthony Bourdain showed filmgoers his favourite food film, Ang

Lee’s Eat Drink Man Woman. During the evening, Bourdain even tried the famous Nova Scotian delicacy — donair. In another uniquely Nova Scotian tradition, the gastronomical explorer also became a Member of the Order of Good Cheer.

Each year at Devour!, films are handselected and paired with a meal inspired by it — themes, colours, ingredients come to life in the hands of local and guest chefs.

This year, chef Dave Smart of Wolfville’s Front and Central restaurant created a feast based on the Spanish film El Somni.

Well known for his unique creations, such as boneless rack of lamb, Smart believes creativity is fundamental to the culinary experience. “With my background in

“Food and film are a very dynamic combination, there is so much to see and experience. We want to make great food and films accessible to everyone. It’s important for us all to step back and look at what we are eating and where it comes from,” says Rinaldo. Devour! reminds attendees that great food is not simply about price, but the quality of ingredients, creativity and love poured into each and every meal. The annual food film festival is not simply about expressing a love of food or film, but a love of the Maritimes — making it a must-visit destination and showing the world what the area’s great creative minds can do.

What aspects of the winter weather can be dangerous for your vehicle, and how does maintaining it increase safety?

he winter season can be hard on our four-wheeled machines.

This year, get ahead of the game by winterizing your vehicle before the cold temperatures set in. As you will see in the tips below, winter maintenance makes your car safer, run more smoothly, and will likely prevent any snowy roadside breakdowns.

What are the benefits of maintaining your vehicle in winter?

One of the biggest benefits of maintaining your vehicle for winter is convenience.

Ever break down in jaw-freezing temperatures and have to wait for a tow?

No fun. Better to fix any issues your car may have now.

Cold temperatures wreak havoc on undercharged batteries, so it’s important to get them checked ahead of time.

A battery that started your car in the summer may not do the job in the winter, and the colder the weather the more power is needed to start your vehicle.

What things should you look and listen for to know your vehicle needs winter maintenance?

Tire pressures are very important as colder weather sets in. Tire pressure will drop in cold weather, and an underinflated tire can cause handling issues.

Proper wipers and a full washer tank is a must! Keep your fuel tank full, and keep some basic supplies in your car: blanket, water, extra washer fluid, bag of sand... this will be helpful if you find yourself on the side of the road in a snowstorm.

What are the main areas of a vehicle that typically require winter maintenance?

How can a service centre go above and beyond to ensure their customer’s vehicles are maintained well for winter?

There are several items that could be serviced before cold weather sets in: damaged or worn hoses, belts, water pumps and plug wires. Undercoating is important in high salt areas, as it slows oxidization, resulting in less rust. Winter tires are a must, as are winter wiper

Winter in Windsor “Birthplace of Hockey”

H

ockey represents an inextricable part of Windsor’s heritage and culture. It was the writings of Windsor’s own Thomas Chandler Haliburton, generally regarded as the father of North American humour, that alluded to a form of hockey being played by King’s students in his book, Attache, which dealt in part with recollections of his days at the prestigious school.

The passage from the Haliburton book is believed to be the earliest written reference to any form of ice hockey, and goes as follows: “the boys let out racin’, yelpin’, hollerin’ and whoopin’ like mad with pleasure... with games at base in the fields, or hurley on the long pond on the ice...”

The students from King’s-Edgehill School today still play hockey at the Cradle of Hockey on the Dill family farm. There have been many re-enactments of games of hurley-on-ice, “back of the college woods” on the pond. The students at King’s still use the same path today their predecessors would have used some 200 years ago.

Get Serious About Snow This Winter

here’s a sport for every snow lover at Ski Martock. Alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, biathlon and snowshoeing can all be done just minutes away from Halifax and the Annapolis Valley.
