THE LANGUAGE OF
Colour BY KIMBERLY PATZER
I
want to share with you one of my favourite topics when it comes to design—colour. I have always loved and been fascinated by colour. As human beings, we are created to enjoy and relate to colours; they define our world. Think about a cool, dreary day full of blues and greys. How does that make you feel? Perhaps sad and downcast. What about a bright, sunny, yellow day when your surroundings pop with all kinds of colour? I bet that makes you feel happy. Colours affect our moods, and they influence our feelings. We associate by colour: red means stop, green means go, baby blue means boy and pale pink means girl. Colour really is a language of its own. So, how do we translate these thoughts into the world of design? Colour is a science. If you studied physics, you would have learned that Sir Isaac Newton discovered that when pure white light passes through a prism, the light separates into what we commonly know as the rainbow. This was the beginning of the colour wheel that we use in design, and it demonstrates how colours can be mixed together to create other colours. Being that colours evoke certain feelings, in the field of interior design, colour is used to create moods in a room. Colour is a powerful communication tool. Select a paint, wallpaper or accents depending on what mood or feeling you want to create. Not only the colour, but also the strength or the brightness will affect the space as well. We may not always be aware, but we have colours speaking to us throughout our day. Have you noticed that when you go to a restaurant you typically see red? This is because red builds appetite and makes us hungry. Red and orange are good choices for colours in your kitchen for this reason. Maybe you have a sunroom or a closed front porch. Yellow is a happy, cheery colour that is a great choice for these spaces because, while it creates the feeling of happiness, it also makes the room feel larger and brighter if there
is not a lot of natural light. We tend to associate the colour purple with royalty or wealth. It is also a calming colour, which makes it a good choice for a space where you like to relax, and purple is an especially nice complement to yellow and green. Brown, an earthy colour, brings comfort and warmth to any space. It makes you feel like you are wrapped in a rich, warm blanket. However, it can also produce the feeling of being in a cave so that is something to consider if you do not like tight spaces. Black says drama. If you are looking for a strong ambiance, black is a good choice. If you mix black with white and pops of yellow, it is absolutely stunning. Blue is a calming colour that reminds us of the sea or the sky. White is beautiful, relaxing and soothing—a good choice for the bathroom. Green brings so much life into a room. Use it full-throttle by painting your walls in your favourite shade, or more simply bring some tropical plants into your décor. Green will make you perk up and be more productive, which is why it is a good colour to use in office spaces. Thank you for letting me share with you my love for colour. Husband and Wife Lose WeigHt to be togetHer Longer
S
hannon—I’ve been going to different weight loss programs since high school. I tried Slim Fast, Weight Watchers, Atkins or any fad diet you can think of. I’d lose the weight then gain it back plus some. I felt like a failure. There was a lack of confidence in the way I looked because people judge you; they think you’re lazy or that you eat too much. I had back and knee problems that I knew would dissipate if I lost the weight, but I just couldn’t keep it off. There is also history of heart disease in my family, so this was always in the back of my mind. As we get older, looking after your health becomes more important. Mike—For me, I didn’t do the dieting. I got heavy because of my diet and my lifestyle. I worked retail so I was always eating on the run. I watched myself getting heavier and heavier, my blood pressure going up and up. I ended up developing sleep apnea and was put on a CPAP machine because I wasn’t sleeping at night. I was very tired all the time, I had no energy, I was having headaches and I developed stomach issues. I needed to lose weight for my health. I didn’t think I was valuable to anybody because of my size—it affected me emotionally and physically. One day we were sitting in a traffic jam, and we were dreaming of things we would do if we had a little extra money. With very little hesitation, Shannon said she would get weight loss surgery. I wanted to lose weight too and I thought the best way I could support her would be to go through it with her. We turned our dream into a reality.

Shannon—You can have a spouse who says they’ve supported you, but Mike actually shared the experience with me. He knew exactly what I was going through every step of the way. he Saskatchewan Country Music Association Awards (SCMAs) and Country Music Festival, held in and around Saskatoon on the last weekend of April, was packed full of music, networking, entertainment and fun. Following the SCMA Songwriters Spotlight and Kickoff Party on Friday evening, the SCMA Industry Awards and Brunch on Saturday celebrated a variety of industry awards mixed with performances. Seasoned performer and champion fiddler, Donny Parenteau from Prince Albert, acted as MC.

The Roots Café, held over the lunch hour, featured five well-known entertainers: host Jay Semko (Saskatoon), Eli Barsi (Kennedy), Larry Krause (Paddockwood), Jody Johnson (Prince Albert) and Blake Berglund (Kennedy), who shared the stories behind songs they then performed. Three “power seminars” in the afternoon offered information on achieving a great sound mix, crowd-funding and grant programs, and working with a booking agent to find a larger audience. In the few short hours between seminars and the SCMA Gala Awards, entertainers

And, what would you expect after the awards on Saturday night? A New Artist Cabaret, of course. Wrapping up the weekend on Sunday were the SCMA General Meeting, the Country Gospel Show and Brunch and the Country Gospel Show. After spending a wonderful Saturday at this event, it became apparent that Saskatchewan has great country music talent hailing from every corner of the
province. No entertainer has had an easy road getting to this level; like any other path in life, it takes determination, perseverance and a lot of hard work. Finally, this genre of music is ever-evolving and changing, and so are our artists, as evidenced by Jay Semko’s successful transition from Northern Pikes’ rock band member to roots solo artist. The Parkland area was well represented. yorkton’s CJGX won Fan’s Choice Radio Station of the year (Secondary Market), and two female vocalists also took home awards. Nominated in five categories, Samara yung from yorkton won Song of the year (Composer) for her collaboration with Steve Fox on Mardi Gras. Samara says the release of her first video “was an amazing experience … something I‘ve always dreamed about from being a little girl watching CMT on Sundays. It was one of the best days of my life, next to my wedding day … you can’t leave out the husband,” she laughs. A promising young figure skater sidelined by a knee injury, Samara turned her extra time to singing and has not looked back. “you work really hard for a really long time before you see things: figure skating really taught me that. I have two fulltime jobs; I’ll come home from a day at work and be emailing and on Facebook promoting my music for another six hours … we travel a lot on weekends … it’s a busy and amazing life to have.” Selected as one of the Saskatchewan
artists to perform in the recent pre-Junos hype, Samara says “We have such talent here … I can come to the SCMAs and see friends, and that’s what I love most about it … we support each other.” With plans for a new album underway, Samara says “It’s going to be an exciting few years coming up. It would be my dream to do a couple more music videos, but we take it a song and a release at a time and will see what happens.” Samara is thankful for all of her fans. “If it wasn’t for my province and my hometown and my area and all the people that are out there playing my songs and coming to my shows and following my Facebook, buying my albums and hitting my youTube videos, I wouldn’t be here … it’s really nice to have the support behind you.” Lanigan native, Jess Moskaluke, who took home 2013 Female Vocalist of the year, started singing and competing when she was 15. “I was 20 years old when I started song writing, and got an artists’ development deal in Nashville, as well as a publishing deal. I really just started developing there — the country music capital of the world — I was very lucky to be able to learn a lot.” While she does not hail from a musical family, Jess says “we always listened to country music, I grew up on it. I think I have a country-style voice and the fans are so loyal. I’m from a small town and the whole genre has a small-town feel … that’s really appealing to me.” Calling herself a pop country artist, Jess feels that
country music is getting more popular, “Country is almost anything these days: lyrical content that is meaningful.” Working “two full-time jobs right now” as she builds her music career, Jess has capitalized on the internet to market herself, especially youTube. “Trying to be innovative is really important and that’s what youTube has allowed me to do.” Currently working on her first full-length album this summer, Jess says “someday, I’d love to win a Juno … and continue to support myself doing music. I’m just really happy making music.” Jess values her fan base. “I’m just so appreciative of all the support that I’ve been given … those times when I’ve thought ‘maybe music isn’t the right choice.’ I’ve always had huge amounts of support. If I ever wanted to quit, I don’t know if I could … I have such an encouraging, supporting community.” The SCMA will hold their 25th anniversary awards weekend in Nipawin in 2014. A quick 10 kilometre drive down Highway nine (south of Yorkton) is Prairie Dome Strawberries, a family-owned and operated U-Pick. Elwyn and Marie Vermette planted the first berries there almost 30 years ago. Since then, they’ve welcomed their daughter Tonia and her husband, Kirk Flaman, into the operation. Nowadays, you can find the whole family out in the fields pruning, trimming, weeding and watering—preparing for your visit. The U-Pick offers acres

of strawberries, raspberries, saskatoons and new potatoes for customers to enjoy. Sweet corn will be available this year; when it ripens in late August, it’s the perfect addition to a late summer barbeque. Enjoying the great outdoors while picking berries is a perfect summer activity: fun for the whole family. Prairie Dome’s youngest guests can’t yet walk, and their oldest guests are over 100 years old. “People come out with their babies in strollers . . . lots of grandparents with their grandchildren
. . . young families. For people with mobility issues or small children, there is no problem, because everyone gets a ride on the trailer, and we can set you up with a lawn chair once you’ve reached the field,” says Tonia. “People come back year after year, because they like the atmosphere and appreciate the personal service.” The staff keep the fields carefully weeded—no one wants to encounter thistles while searching for the perfect berry. They also demonstrate picking technique for guests, and ensure that everyone has their own, unpicked section of berries.
While the U-Pick generally opens in mid-July, the specific date changes from year to year. “It depends on the heat and on the summer,” explains Tonia. “We can usually predict when the berries will ripen by July first.” Once the exact dates are available, you can find them by liking Prairie Dome’s Facebook page, following them on Twitter or checking out their website (www. prairiedome.com). If you’re not online, you can also simply give them a call at 306.782.7297. Once picking is officially underway, visitors are welcome in the mornings from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and in the evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If space allows, walk-ins are also permitted, but
to avoid disappointment, it’s wise to call ahead or make an appointment online. For many people, visiting Prairie Dome is an annual tradition—as much a part of summer as an ice cream cone or camping out under the stars. In Saskatchewan, no one needs to look for long to find a spot to pitch their tent—regional parks and independently owned sites are scattered throughout the province. But our numerous provincial parks—there are over 30—may provide local campers with the purest outdoor experience. If you’re setting forth from the Parkland area, Fine Lifestyles recommends a few destinations that are gorgeous, green and not far from home. Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park is a national gem, and it’s less than an hour drive from Yorkton. “People talk about the white sand beaches of Cuba. Good Spirit’s are better,” says Janice Crawford, provincial park area manager. “The beach is a very shallow entrance, so it’s absolutely ideal for young families.”

here are countless kinds of camping trips. There’s the school, Scout or Guide trip, a rite of passage for many Canadians. The teenage or twenty-something trip with friends, sleepless and exuberant. The couple trip, more romantic than any fancy restaurant or five-star hotel. The family trip where you teach (or maybe learn) how to forage for berries and start a fire. They all have one thing in common, and it’s the reason people camp to begin with: every trip, from the backyard to the deep woods, creates a shared memory and bond between the campers that lasts long after they return home.

Good Spirit’s convenient proximity to Yorkton, as well as its camper-friendly atmosphere, is hard to beat. “It’s a fairly flat area. Not a lot of hills in that park. Very sandy soil . . . if it rains, it’s dry five minutes after,” notes Janice. And since it’s a smaller park, “everything’s fairly close to the campground, within walking distance.” Of course, Good Spirit’s size also means you’ll want to book early for peak visitor periods like long weekends and mid-summer. Anyone whose best vacations consist of lures and reels will fall for Greenwater Lake Provincial Park hook, line and sinker. “If fishing’s your focus, I would say Greenwater’s the place to go,”
says Janice. “It definitely attracts the anglers.” Your on-the-road playlist will need to be longer than usual, though. “Greenwater is a little more of a travelling distance, a little more remote,” Janice says. “But sometimes that’s part of the attraction and intrigue.” At any rate, distance doesn’t deter campers. “[Greenwater] books up the fastest.” Whether you’re a fisherperson or not, don’t spend so much time watching the waves at Greenwater that you miss its other charms. The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with a bird viewing tower that overlooks the forest canopy. Over 200 species are known to nest in, or migrate through, the area: you’ll likely glimpse geese, herons, loons and “umpteen duck species.” Duck Mountain Provincial Park is a third option for Parkland area campers. “Duck Mountain . . . is on a geographical high area, so it does have mountain-like characteristics,” says Janice. “The scenery is just amazing . . . it’s gorgeous, it’s peaceful.” And if you’re booking late, you have a better chance of snagging a spot at Duck Mountain than Good Spirit or Greenwater. “Of the three parks, Duck Mountain is the largest . . . we’ve got close to 400 campsites there,” Janice says. “It’s a place that takes a few days to explore.” Janice urges visitors to Duck Mountain to check out the park’s Fen Trail, which leads you along a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through “a unique filtration system that only occurs in a mountainous-type area” featuring “really unique plant life,” including carnivorous plants. And while Greenwater’s bird life can’t be beat, Duck Mountain may have the monopoly on furrier fauna. “Lots of wildlife to view in that park,” Janice notes, including deer, elk, moose and even a few bears. “Make sure that you’re aware of how to bear-proof your campsite!” All three parks welcome both RVs and tents, and all three provide certain basic amenities, such as washrooms, firewood, showers, potable water and electrical campsites, as well as luxuries such as beaches, restaurants, tennis facilities, mini-golf and bike or hiking trails. “There’s golfing at all three, boating at all three, fishing at all three,” Janice lists. “All three of these particular parks have interpretive staff . . . all three definitely have activities for kids.” And all three can be booked online or by phone. It’s hard to describe the camping experience to non-campers, because really, it’s a series of experiences: the lakeside wind and sun on your face and arms; the rustle of leaves and faint melody of birdsong; the sweetness of a marshmallow crammed between graham crackers and eaten by firelight. Wherever your trip takes you – Good Spirit Lake, Greenwater, Duck Mountain, or somewhere else entirely – it’s certain you’ll have a wonderful time. When someone asks, “how was it?” you won’t know where to start. FLP

T
he members of Kambusters Drag Racing Association like to go fast—really fast. Faster than an Olympic sprinter; faster than a cheetah chasing its lunch; and, most of all, faster than each other. The group was founded almost ten years ago by “local guys, just having some fun,” in the words of past president and current senior member, Brad Bloodoff. That community spirit remains important to the club. “It’s a really good bunch of people. Everybody is friends, everybody knows each other,” says Bloodoff. But still, Kambusters has grown since its early days. Now an established non-profit, the association hosts monthly meetings and regular “test and tune” dates. To nonracers, Kambusters is mostly known for its annual main attraction: the flagship Prairie Thunder drag races at Yorkton Municipal Airport. This year’s Prairie Thunder drags will be held on the third weekend of July. The event will kick off with a cruise night on Friday, July 19; a car show will entertain attendees on July 20, and the main races will begin on the morning of July 21. “We do have prize money, trophies, there are special giveaways . . . we’ve added a lot of features to make it attractive for racers to come,” says Bloodoff. He expects 100

entrants from throughout Western Canada and the States. Confirmed guests at this year’s drags include Kevin Therres, known for his biodiesel jet cars, and Andy Beauchemin. “He’s coming with two top fuel motorcycles,” says Bloodoff. Track record-holder, Sherrie Bodnarchuk, will also return to defend her title against the previous record-holder. Those are just a few highlights from an event constructed to impress: “You’ll be standing here, pinching yourself because of what shows up to race,” says Bloodoff. Kambusters’ members never forget that the people filling the bleachers are as important as the people on the track. “It’s for the public. We always want to put on a great show for them,” Bloodoff says. One side benefit of the racing venue is that no one has to worry about snagging a seat: audiences have been known to exceed 2500 people, but “there’s still room for more,” Bloodoff states. It’s hard to pinpoint the source of drag racing’s addictive thrill. In part, it’s the challenge of keeping a cool head under pressure-cooker conditions. “You have to be on your game,” says Bloodoff. “It’s all reaction.” And in part, it’s simply the instinctive pleasure that everybody feels while watching displays of extreme showmanship. “The people who come and watch this, they like the noise. They like the power,” says Bloodoff. “The main attraction is the power.” More power to them. Come the third weekend of July, Kambusters will give Yorkton all the speed and sound they can handle. FLP

With such cultural diversity at your fingertips, it’s easy to find something for everyone. Love to sightsee? You won’t want to miss out on the Coliseum and ruins of ancient days or take in the many remarkable museums and art galleries of Rome. If shopping is your thing, the marketplaces of Spain are lined with wonderful one-of-a-kind shops. Looking for some adventure? Why not book a balloon ride over Turkey? Film festivals, fashion shows, plays, operas, ballets, concerts and more—the Mediterranean has deep roots in the arts and is home to the most famous historical and modern artists in the world. If it’s nightlife you are looking for, you’ve come to the right place. The Mediterranean is packed full of restaurants, night clubs, lounges and casinos for your enjoyment. According to Rebecca Funk, leisure manager for Thomas Cook Travel in Saskatoon, if you are looking to take in as many countries as possible in a short amount of time, a cruise may be the best holiday for you. If you prefer to do your own thing, talk to your travel agent about booking private tours to get the most bang for your buck. “There are some excellent escorted tour companies out there that are perfect for the independent traveller,” says Funk. When travelling to the Mediterranean, Funk advises that you be sure to pack excellent walking shoes for sightseeing and shopping. Because the weather in that part of the world is varied, you will want to pack an umbrella and jacket. Depending on the time of year that you go, you may also wish to take a hat and gloves. Some toiletries can be very expensive or more difficult to access, so be sure to take as much as you think you will need for your entire trip. Sunscreen is very expensive, especially on cruise ships. “It’s also a good idea for women to have a wrap with them to cover their shoulders when visiting certain cultural regions,” Funk suggests. You don’t want to miss out visiting a great church or other religious architecture because your shoulders are bare. Funk also advises that gratuities are often included in your bill. Watch that you are not double tipping your hosts, cab drivers and so on. “Be street smart,” says Funk. “Watch for pick-pockets and scam artists. Have your belongings close to you at all times.” Above all, enjoy your stay. Take in the sights and absorb the culture. The Mediterranean is an ideal vacation for anniversaries, adventure seekers, history buffs, shop-a-holics, families or anyone looking for an experience of a lifetime. FLP

Recently this community driven business teamed up with Pathway Homes to help provide homes to some Yorktonites in need. The Pathway Homes Project is a nonprofit undertaking that provides universally accessible homes for Yorkton’s mentally and physically challenged people. The

aim of the project is to move these individuals who are currently living in rentals that do not accommodate their needs into homes that do, reinvesting their rental money to create more homes for people in need. Currently there are 40 people on a list for Pathway Homes in Yorkton. R.H. Electric saw the need for help and answered it by completing the electrical and subsidizing their work for the three homes that were recently completed. “Being at the opening was a great opportunity to meet the people who are going to be living there and see how excited they were. n operation for the last 40 years, Yorkton Adult Independent Living (YAIL) Harbor Incorporated is a local non-profit, community-based organization that provides housing, programming and personal care to adults 19-years-old and older with moderate to mild intellectual and physical disabilities in Yorkton. YAIL currently operates two group homes and runs a supported living program (SLP). The 34 active SLP clients live in their own apartments and receive support and assistance from YAIL staff

whenever they require it. “Our staff go out and help with things like keeping apartments clean and buying groceries. Almost anything they need assistance with,” explains Sonya Reviczky, executive director of YAIL Harbor. YAIL also runs an adult literacy program that is open to anyone. This program helps equip individuals with the skills required to work in the community. They assist participants with developing resumes, learning job skills and developing the relevant know-how in areas like English and math.
For the past four years, YAIL has been working on their Pathway Homes Project, a plan to build accessibly designed triplexes for their clients in the SLP program. “Unfortunately, many of the apartments our clients live in throughout Yorkton do not appropriately address their needs. They also don’t qualify to live in wheelchair accessible homes in the city because they don’t have families. Most of the clients cannot afford to pay a lot for rent. Although they work, most make minimum wage and social assistance tops-up. For some, it’s still not enough to cover their rent. As
rent continues to increase it only gets worse for our clients,” explains Sonya.

After discussion amongst YAIL’s board members, they proposed the Pathway Homes Project to city council and requested a land donation. Approved in 2009, the City of Yorkton donated the land behind Value Tire and Battery on Mayfair Avenue and Harris Street, valued at $250,000.
The three people chosen to live in the first triplex were chosen based on their physical abilities and the amount of rent they were paying in their apartments. “The first people stood to benefit the most from these units and can now be more self-sufficient. The convenience for them is huge. There were many tears of joy when they first moved in,” says Sonya.
The new triplexes will be divided into three single-bedroom units, each 700800 square feet. They are “universally designed” with widened doorways and hallways to allow for wheelchair accessibility, lowered light switches, pull-out cabinet racks, adjustable cupboards and pot fillers on the stoves. The bathrooms have various handles and aids to accommodate those with a physical disability, there are no stairs, laundry rooms are built within bedroom closets and maintenance people have separate entrances. Most importantly, these new triplexes are affordable. Monthly rent for the units will go directly to YAIL Harbor. Once the mortgages on the buildings are paid off, YAIL intends to use the income to keep constructing homes. They hope to provide housing for all of their SLP clients. In order to obtain a loan for the mortgage on the first property, YAIL Harbor had to raise the first $100,000 down payment. Thanks to donations from individuals, businesses such as Value Tire, and service groups such as the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club, YAIL had enough money to go ahead with the first triplex. The Pathway Homes Project is entirely based on volunteers with zero government funding. “I am so proud of our board members like John den Brok, our vice president treasurer, for helping to spearhead this project. I also thank the community for their donations. All of the
money goes to the project. Nobody in the YAIL organization is getting paid for this project; it is all volunteer,” explains Sonya. YAIL Harbor hopes to continue building these complexes in Yorkton, but they need a land donation and help with the down payment. ike McIntyre is the owner and manager of Thorsness Appliance and Bed Store in Yorkton. In partnership with his father, Tom, for many years, Tom is now stepping back after 40 years with the company and leaving the day-today business dealings in Mike’s hands. Tom is staying on as a director with the company and still spending some time on the sales floor. Mike, his wife Krissa, son Zach and daughter Avery, live just north of Yorkton and are active community members. Mike is a longtime member of the

1970s. First opening in 1988, the Yorkton store is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Mike has been with Thorsness Appliance for 20 years, 17 years as manager of the Yorkton store.
The McIntyre’s have owned and operated Thorsness Appliance and Bed Store plus Thorsness Hardware in Saltcoats since 1996. They have kept the Thorsness name because of the reputation it has held since the first Thorsness store opened in Bredenbury in 1945. The Thorsness legacy spread to Saltcoats in the 1950s, Churchbridge in the 1960s and Langenburg in the

The McIntyre’s have since purchased the properties at 16 Betts and 18 Betts in order to grow their display and warehouse size, and this year they opened another warehouse at 28
Betts. This extra space has enabled them to warehouse most of what they sell, which means that if you pick something out, you can usually take it home with you or have it delivered within a few days instead of waiting for the company to order it. t began as an idea more than 30 years ago. Dr. Basnyat had a vision of a day program and an activity centre for mentally and physically challenged people. Dr. Basnyat met with concerned citizens of Melville to discuss the fact that once a person of special needs reached the age of 18, there was no one to assist them to function within their community. On July 7, 1980, Rail City Industries was incorporated under the Non-Profits Corporations Act. Since that time, Rail City has assisted hundreds of individuals through their many worthwhile programs. These programs provide service to the community as well as employment training to the participants. “Presently we provide residential, vocational and supported employment opportunities

to over 50 clients,” states Sue Sparrow, CEO of Rail City Industries.
SARCAN and Paper Recycling Located at Rail City Industries, Melville’s SARCAN depot officially opened its doors on June 28, 1989. This program has provided training and job opportunities to people with disabilities resulting in the creation of three fulltime jobs. Since its opening, SARCAN has expanded from collecting only aluminum cans to accepting plastic, glass and metal beverage containers as well. 2005 brought the inclusion of aerosol and paint containers to the recycling program. The introduction of the electronic recycling program in 2007 introduced the collection of cell phones, televisions, computers and other items.
As a partnership program with the City of Melville, Rail City offers paper, plastic and tin recycling services as well. Confidential shredding is also available. These services provide full and parttime employment for about eight Rail City clients.
Commercial Kitchen Services Another very popular service program is the commercial kitchen, First Avenue Foodstuffs. This program teaches participants about the Food Services Industry, in addition to preparing specialized meals for some of the participants on a daily basis. They also sell delicious dishes such as lasagna, perogies, cabbage rolls, dainties and more. They also offer catering for special events. “One very popular item
on our menu is the ‘Working Woman’s Christmas Package’,” explains Sue. This package is ideal for the busy woman who loves serving the traditional Christmas dishes but doesn’t have the time to do a lot of it herself. You can also enjoy these wonderful mouth-watering recipes at the local farmer’s market. Have a special occasion? Ask the folks at the Rail City commercial kitchen about their beautiful and fresh edible fruit arrangements. Specialty cakes can also be ordered for weddings, anniversaries and more. Sue tells with deserving pride about being the recipient of the Melville Chamber of Commerce 2012 Business of the Year. After receiving the plaque on behalf of the staff, Sue shared the experience with the participants. “Everyone was so pleased and proud to receive the recognition that they are now striving to get Business of the Year every year,” she expresses.

Residential Programs Rail City offers residential services that include a variety of group living models to choose from. Life skills and development training is brought into this environment to encourage as much independence and harmony as possible. The Supported Apartment Living Program (SALP) provides life skills training and support on a one-to-one basis for those who wish to live in the community independently. “Presently we have enough clients on our waitlist to fill at least another three homes,” states Brenda Molnar, long time employee at Rail City Industries.
A Place with Heart and Purpose Rail City Industries is an organization that’s filled with compassion, determination and heart. The primary focus of this non-profit registered charity is to bring a better quality of life to their participants by preparing them for life integrated within the community. As a result, the participants are empowered with a sense of value, dignity and independence. The community is graced by the active participation of this deeply dedicated population of citizens. It truly is a win-win situation. The main focus of Rail City is to increase community inclusion and foster independent living and working in the community. Brenda explains that the level of dedication and loyalty amidst this population of employees is of the highest. They place a great emphasis on conducting the best possible quality of work. “We have some participants that we have to bribe to take holiday time,” remarks Brenda. The clients aren’t the only ones completely dedicated to their work. Both Sue and Brenda admit their love for their jobs. “I love to come into work,” expresses Brenda, “it’s like a big family.” Sue agrees as she states, “it’s fabulous coming in to work where we all genuinely care about each other and the participants. I’m so impressed with the caliber of caring.” FLP

EQUITY PAYS Yorkton Co-op is different and it shows. Although on the surface, many of Yorkton Co-op’s locations look and feel like traditional retail stores, they are quite different. Yes, they sell food, hardware, crop supplies and fuel like most competitors, but there are advantages to shopping Co-op. The advantages are called: equity and cash back. Unlike most other businesses, Yorkton Co-op has owners, or members, that share in any savings that the Co-op generates from its operations each year. Every time a Yorkton Co-op member makes a purchase from a Yorkton Co-op location, their purchase is recorded to their patronage number and accumulates throughout the year. At the end of the year, if the Co-op has a savings, the Board of Directors allocates an allocation percentage to each of the commodities. The allocation percentages are then applied to the member’s purchases in that commodity and an allocation is made to the member’s equity account. In April 2013, Yorkton Co-op allocated more than $4.1 million to Yorkton Co-op members’ accounts. The Board allocated three per cent for all food purchases, one per cent for all gas bar non-fuel purchases, 1.5 per cent for hardware and crop inputs and 8.5 per cent for all fuel purchases. So what does this mean to the members? An allocation of 8.5 per cent on fuel means that on the average price of pump gas in 2012, members received 9.9 cents per litre back in equity and cash. On the average price of farm diesel, it means an allocation of 8 cents per litre. What does an allocation of three per cent mean on food purchases? It means that if a family spends an average of $100 per week on groceries, they could eat for one and a half weeks for free. It really does pay to be a member of Yorkton Co-op. Every individual has their own story, and each is unique. It is very important for my wife and I to always sit down and take time to review every case carefully. As a Canadian, it is my duty to protect the country I love, but this should not stop me from showing everyone that we can promote harmony and unity while being a welcoming country to those people who genuinely need an opportunity to work and live in Canada,” states Mark. The Parkland Mall location, which opened in May under owners David and Lee Dungey, has nearly tripled the old store’s floor size, growing from 22,000 to 65,000 square feet. If those are hard numbers to picture, try this: you could fit three hockey rinks into the new Canadian Tire, with room to spare. The new store will feature wider aisles and a clutter-free layout, enlarged housewares department, increased variety of seasonal products such as patio furniture and outdoor power equipment and a yearround hockey section. “We’re going from carrying, approximately, 20,000

unique products, to close to 32,000 unique products,” David notes. Those thousands of products include everything from kitchen gadgets to sporting goods, truck and towing equipment to highend lighting fixtures — all the many ingredients of day-to-day work and play in Canada. The impressive scope of the new Canadian Tire means that more customers than ever will be able to find what they need. “We serve customers from as far as two-and-ahalf hours away… communities that are 100 people to 3,000 people,” David explains. When those long-distance customers trek to Canadian Tire, David wants to be sure the store has what they need.
The new location will also feature a 10,000 square foot hunting and fishing pro shop; it’s the first time a Yorkton Canadian Tire has carried firearms. The pro shop is “a new design, specially geared toward Yorkton’s passion for outdoor pursuits, and it caters to their love of hunting and fishing,” says General Manager, Melissa Honour. Feedback from the Parkland Outdoor Show has already indicated that customers approve: “The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” says David. While a store this size is a first for Yorkton, Canadian Tire has been serving the area for 40 years, and Canada for 90. After a near-century of service, it is a

ince 1945, the Churchbridge Credit Union has been a supportive financial institution that has been providing the people of the area with friendly and professional service. These deep roots have established the Churchbridge Credit Union as a long time active member of the communities of Churchbridge, Langenburg and MacNutt. “We offer full financial services in all three locations and surrounding areas,” states Gaylene Putland, support services assistant. “We are a local Credit Union and we have 29 local employees.” As a strong community based organization, the Churchbridge Credit Union is not shy about participating in events. “Bringing communities together, supporting communities through giving has always been important to our organization and a belief that guides many of our decisions,” comments Gaylene. One of the ways they show support is through their Community Investment

Putland explains that this program was established about three years ago to help out local non-profit organizations. “We set aside one per cent of pre-tax profit to assist in the social, cultural and economic enrichment of our communities,” she states. Since 2011, the Churchbridge Credit Union has donated $27,500 to local community organizations through this program. “We’ve been donating to organizations for years through cash donations, giveaways, events, barbecues and more,” Gaylene adds, “and since 1999, we’ve given over $100,000 plus prizes to many organizations.”

T
he days are longer, the weather is getting warmer and the trees are beginning to turn green—another winter has passed and spring has arrived. It’s that time of year when those special vehicles that have been hidden away in a garage get dusted off and are brought back into the sunlight. These are the cars, trucks or other vehicles that only see the days of summer, and when summer fades, so do they, vanishing back into their hiding places to wait the return of another spring. In a day and time where anything of age—electronics, furniture, vehicles—is frequently replaced, it is nice to find those who cherish the classics. Without museums or collectors we would undoubtedly lose touch with our past. The Rolling Thunder Cruisers Car Club is a group of people who have saved the forgotten vehicles of years past by either restoring them to their former glory or have somehow kept them in their original condition. Even for those of us who may not be car junkies, it is hard not to appreciate the effort they have put forth to keep

these vehicles in top running condition. Each spring and summer the club hits the road to tour Saskatchewan to proudly show off their “cruising past.” How could you not be interested in seeing such legendary vehicles as a 1957 Chevy or a 1966 Mustang? You can see a 1985 Trans Am, Plymouth Barracuda or ’68 Chevy Camaro SS. Many, especially the younger generation, have never seen or heard these beauties rip up the roads in their glory days. The Rolling Thunder Cruisers Car Club allows us to get the background story from the driver on how they have restored the vehicle or how they came about getting the keys. The club was initially formed back in 2002 with members from Yorkton and Melville and other parts of the Parkland area. The club has had upwards of 70 members since its inception, and later branched out, forming “Kambusters” drag racing club. Many of the members are part of both clubs.
FOR 2013 RTC joins forces with the Yorkton Antique Club to help out with a show and shine at Good Spirit Lake. Dennis Naphin at the Manitou lake concession helps promote one of the best long weekend lakefront show and shines in Saskatchewan. This past year was the 10th anniversary of the show and it attracted well over 100 vehicles from Prairie Provinces and the northern U.S. In 2004, Maclean’s magazine voted Good Spirit Lake as one of the top ten beaches in Canada.
• July 6 and 7: Cruise the Spirit Good Spirit Lake From July 19 to 21, over 150 muscle cars, dragsters and drag bikes will converge in Yorkton for three days of cruising, showing and drag racing. It all starts Friday evening with the FOX FM cruise night from 5 to 8 p.m. on Broadway Street. Saturday will see those same vehicles parked at the Royal Auto Group Dealership for spectators to enjoy. Hosted by The Rolling Thunder Cruisers and The Royal Auto Group of Yorkton, it will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday brings the fastest and most powerful vehicles out to the Yorkton airport for the Prairie Thunder Drag Races hosted by Kambusters. Over 2,500 fans take in this event annually, and that number grows every year. In 2008 the Humboldt-based bio-diesel remodelled F-150 jet truck set a record with a six second run for 400 metres at a speed of well over 300 kilometres per hour!

All participants have their names entered for a chance to win various prizes that have been graciously donated by local businesses. Wal-Mart matches all the funds raised by the hotdog and hamburger sale; over $2,000 raised annually. Trophies will be handed out in more than 10 categories, such as best car, best truck and best bike. This year will mark the 12th anniversary of the show and shine.

ocated just southeast of Yorkton along highways 20 and 80, sits a true prairie gem. The town of Esterhazy is a flourishing community of approximately 3,000 people. This bustling and welcoming town has become a hub of growth and activity in both the mining and agricultural industries. With the global demand for potash, there has been a great deal of growth in the Esterhazy area over the past several years. Presently, a third mine for Mosaic is under development, which has caused the population of the town to escalate. Past mayor and former general manager for Mosaic, John Nightingale, reminisces of when the potash industry first made a presence in Esterhazy. He recalls that although the townspeople were very supportive, there were some growing pains for the small farming community. The rapid growth that took place in the 1960s was an experience that the present day town council was able to draw from. “The council, learning from the 1960s experience, is more prepared for the growth, more aware of how to deal with the issues like housing and infrastructure,” comments Nightingale. Nightingale is also the curator and founder of the Potash Interpretive Centre. The Interpretive Centre offers tours to visitors which walks them through the mining process. Going through the exhibits, which explain to the public what is involved in the mining of potash.
Present mayor, Pauline Chewka, explains that Esterhazy was a retirement community, but over the past several years more and more young families have been moving into the town. This has caused a shift in the focus of the population. “Growth like this affects everything, business, healthcare and education,” Chewka says, “We are fortunate to have an Economic Development Committee and citizens to work with us.” She goes on to point out how impressed she is with Esterhazy’s young mothers. “They are a very strong volunteer base and have taken a proactive approach to meeting some of the needs of the community, such as fundraising for playground equipment,” states Chewka. Esterhazy continues to grow as a vibrant and active community that offers a wide range of services to its townspeople. With schools, churches, a nine-hole golf course, tennis court, campground, hospital, clinic, service clubs, sports teams, seniors’ group and more, Esterhazy is described as an allencompassing community. The business development of Esterhazy has grown along with the population. As a resident and business person in the community, Roy Spence, manager of the North Valley Credit Union, is pleased to see the economic growth. “We’ve seen a number of expansions to the business sector as well as new services such as a furniture store, new hotels and a new restaurant,” states Spence. “We’re positive about the growth and hope to see it continue for the next four to 10 years,” he adds.

The mine expansion means about 250 new jobs created over a period of about five years. The business community sees this as a strong permanent growth that will create a snowball effect as the mine outsources to services and suppliers in the community. Derek Paidel of Parkland Manufacturing is a long-time resident and business person who knows firsthand of the importance of the mine’s outsourcing. “There are a lot of businesses that work with the mine. The honest competition is good for our businesses,” he comments, “It keeps the quality of our products up where they should be and it helps keep the mine running efficiently, which encourages further growth.” As a member of the Economic Development Committee, Paidel states that their focus is to support the town council as Esterhazy grows. “We are taking a proactive approach by shifting to more planning and development,” he says. Even though there is a lot of talk about the growth of Esterhazy, the mayor, council and townspeople are determined to keep the town a family-based community. “These are exciting times,” says Chewka, “but we are being careful to keep our smalltown friendliness.” With the strong leadership and supportive residents, Esterhazy continues to grow and thrive without losing its grassroots heritage.
