Party-Perfect Looks For The

HOLIDAY

SEASON

W

ith all the parties and gettogethers that take place during the holidays, it can be difficult to pull together a cocktail-worthy look every time. But with a few style staples, you’ll be lighting up the room and making a style statement all your own during the festive season.

Style With Sequins

Nothing screams “fabulous” quite like sequins. Lending a sparkling allure to any outfit, the style staple seems to make a triumphant return during the holidays year after year. Avoid looking like a disco ball by keeping your accessories subtle; you don’t want to overwhelm other party guests.

6

Luxurious Lace

12

Pretty and utterly feminine, lace remains a style staple in many women’s wardrobes — and for good reason. Want to shake it up? While it’s timeless and pretty, forego the typical little black dress and opt for something colourful. If there’s ever a time to rock a little red number, it’s now.

Fabulous Fur

Whether real or faux, there’s a timeless and elegant quality about fur. Wrap yourself up in a luxurious shawl to fend off the cold or button up in an ankle-length coat; either way, you’re sure to turn some heads this holiday season.

Astonishing Accessories

Be ready for holiday parties for years to come by investing in well-made and timeless accessories. Diamonds, as we all know, are a girl’s best friend, so deck the halls by investing in something seriously sparkly. Are you traditional? Opt for something clear and colourless with simple, clean lines. Are you more of a trendsetter? Coloured diamonds will lend an exquisite, unique look to any holiday outfit.

Sarah McLachlan By Trina Annand

W

ith her new album, Shine On, and recent U.S. and Canadian tours, beloved singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan is looking to the future with hopeful optimism. “All my albums are postcards of where I am emotionally in my life,” McLachlan tells Fine Lifestyles in an interview just weeks before leaving on her cross-country fall tour. “I tend to tell stories about my own experiences through music. I feel like I have worked really hard to come back to a place where I feel strong and whole again, and Shine On reflects that.” In just a few short years, McLachlan faced a crisis of identity with a divorce, the death of her father, a split from her manager of more than two decades, and a failed reprisal of Lilith Fair. With a near complete collapse of her support system, she released Laws of Illusion in 2010. It was punctuated with the anguish and grief of that period of her life, a stark contrast to Shine On. After the chaotic

8

period of change, the artist has found light at the end of the tunnel and is embracing life with renewed enthusiasm, drinking up every moment. The dedicated mother of two girls — India Ann Sushil, 12, and Taja Summer, seven —McLachlan credits her children for keeping her afloat through the hard times. “My girls are my biggest and most beautiful distractions. I was very lucky to have them when I was fairly established and could take time off to just be a mom. It has opened up my heart exponentially and I get to see the world through their eyes,” says McLachlan. For the vocalist and musician who has sold more than 40 million records, won three Grammys and eight Junos, McLachlan counts her Vancouverbased Sarah McLachlan School of Music among her greatest achievements. The free after-school music program draws droves of youth, sparking their creativity and nurturing a love of music. There are almost 700 kids in the program this year, making a very real change in their lives.

Drawing inspiration from Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkle, Willie Nelson, Joni Mitchell and other North American folk music, as well as Gaelic and Irish music, McLachlan has developed a unique sound all her own — a sound she has stayed true to throughout her career. She says there will be no pop or jazz albums in her future just to stay on a Top 10 list. “The best advice I ever got about my career was from Annie Lennox when I opened for her in New York many years ago. She said, ‘Don’t let anyone sway your heart.’ It’s advice I really took to heart,” remembers McLachlan. This year has seen McLachlan’s return to the electric guitar, releasing in her words a more wild side to herself. Being proficient in both guitar and piano also gives the artist the ability to work through songs with different instruments, often creating those coveted breakthrough moments in the writing process. “There are no mathematical equations to finishing a song, it’s different every time. The important thing is to stay open and knowing when to quit.”

“I feel very lucky to have been doing this for 26 years and that people still want to hear my work. There are a lot of ways to view success, I am my own harshest critic and knowing I’ve done my best, worked as hard as I could and was true to myself is important,” says McLachlan. The artist’s eighth studio album, Shine On contains song dedications to McLachlan’s father (Song for My Father and Broken Heart), her daughters (Beautiful Girl) and boyfriend, former NHL player Geoff Courtall (Flesh and Blood), whom she met at a Sarah McLachlan School of Music fundraiser. Shine On also includes a song that was originally about bullying and the

10

FineLifestyles

strength of the female spirit, which later became an ode to education activist Malala Yousafza, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt in 2012. While on tour, McLachlan returns to her childhood home of Halifax, the scene of relentless childhood bullying and her musical awakening. At the tender age of four, McLachlan began learning to play the ukulele and taking voice lessons. “When I was a kid I wanted to be Joan Baez, my mom always had her music playing. I was drawn to beautiful melodies. I loved the feeling music gave me; it lifted me and nourished me. I was always singing for as long as I can remember, it was always in my head,” says McLachlan.

Though writing her own music takes more time (there are often three to seven years between albums), the end product is well worth the wait. It creates a more authentic sound for her fans that she loves to share. “Performing live is a culmination of all the blood, sweat and tears I have shed spending months, if not years, on something. Writing is a very isolated experience, so it’s great to be able to finally share it with people. There is a unique energy that is created playing live.” At 46, the artist has seen a lot of shifts in her life and in the music scene as a whole, but she has stayed true to herself and her sound through it all. Looking forward, McLachlan is planning to make the most out of every second she has. “If I am lucky my life is half over. I have been taking a good look at my life and thinking how I want to live it. I want to do as much as I can, have as much fun as I can, live as much as I can, love as hard as I can and give as much as I can. I want to shine, not just endure, to suck the marrow out of everyday. When you put forth that energy and light you get so much back,” says McLachlan.

THE PERFECT RUN

By Erin Legg

“Adventure is worthwhile in itself.” Amelia Earhart

Y

ou’re at the top of the world. The natural mountainscapes are coated with soft, powdery snow. Long, untouched descents are accompanied by the soundtrack of adrenaline pounding in your ears. You’re exhilarated: this is the adventure you’ve been waiting for. “The first heliski experience is something you will never forget,” says Bruce MacMillan of Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing in Blue River, B.C. “The excitement of watching the helicopter flying in to pick you up is what gets the heart rate going, and from there it’s the best skiing experience ever.” Western Canada, and British Columbia in particular, is a hot spot for the sport; the majority of the world’s heliskiing trips take place throughout the Rocky Mountains. MacMillan notes, “The fact that we ski in the lightest, most dense powder snow in possibly the world is something that you can never forget.” It seems unlikely there is anything forgettable about a heliskiing adventure. Experimented in Western Canada in the 60s, the sport grew in commercial tourism across North America and into Europe by the 1980s. “It is the best way to ski – powder snow every run, [you’ll] never ski in another person’s tracks and, of course, no lift lines!” exclaims MacMillan. “What got me hooked? The first run! I can guarantee you will have the same feeling the first time you try it.” “It” involves skiers boarding a helicopter and being flown to fresh terrain (the average ride is just minutes long) where they are dropped off with a skilled guide to experience the best run of their

lives. “We have terrain to suit all levels,” explains MacMillan of Mike Wiegele’s 1.2 million acres of terrain that spans the Cariboo and Monashee mountain ranges. While each heliskiing operation has its own unique prerequisites for skiers, MacMillan says, “If you can ski a blue run, you can come heliskiing with us. This speaks for itself, but coming with some fitness will allow you to enjoy every turn, run and day that you are skiing with us. As long as you show up with the ski attire and boots you are comfortable with for the day, we supply the rest: the latest Atomic and Völkl powder skis and the perfect deep snow boards from Burton. All safety equipment including an avalanche transceiver and backpack are standard.” If the thrill is tempting, but the fear of something going wrong lingers in the back of your mind, let it go. Skier safety is essential to the heliskiing industry and all precautions are taken. The Canadian heliskiing industry is strongly regulated with the highest safety standards in the world. Well-established systems are in place to forecast potential avalanches. “Every decision, every run, all day is based on getting the best and safest powder skiing anywhere in the world,” MacMillan explains. “We use the five-step stability forecasting system developed over 40 years ago, and have two guides, one in front and one in back, in all our 212 groups. [We] are world renowned for setting or exceeding the best, safest practices for skiing safely in the mountains.” MacMillan shares one last final piece of advice for those who are ready for an unforgettable, breathtaking adventure like heliskiing: “Be prepared to endure face shots, perma-grins and fits of childlike excitement!”.

Unfortunately, many of these systems are highly complex with numerous different categories thereby canceling out their usefulness. The Colors System was developed by a California junior high teacher for his students. Blue are people who are guided by their emotions and intuition. They are generally very compassionate and empathetic. They love to talk and when they ask you how you are feeling, they really want to know. Blue employees are creative, flexible and need to be part of a team. If a Blue employee feels that they are making a difference through the work they are doing, they will feel successful, work harder and remain with that company. Oprah Winfrey and Rachel Ray are two well-known Blues.

Golds: the Organizers Golds love order. They like to-do lists, plans, systems, procedures and routines. Their workspace and home are very neat and orderly. Golds can often be found in administrative and leadership positions. Notes Boelcke, “Golds are very efficient and skilled time-management experts who work accurately and with a singleminded focus towards deadlines and completion of tasks.” Golds are not multitaskers but prefer to do one thing at a time. Two well-known Golds are Suze Orman and Michelle Obama.

Oranges: the Energetic Go-Getters Oranges are people who make quick decisions and prefer to figure things out as they go along rather than plan things in advance. Great networkers, Oranges see the big picture and do not get bogged down in the details. They make

Greens may not speak much but when they do say something it is often very insightful and well thought out. As employees, Greens generally do a very thorough job. Launching the Luxurious 2015 Lexus NX:

A STEP ABOVE THE REST By Tobie Hainstock

“I

t’s unlike any other SUV in its category,” says Doug Herbert, product specialist for Lexus College. He’s talking about the thrilling 2015 Lexus NX. With a more advanced, cutting edge design and exciting new performance technology, the 2015 NX has been created with a more youthful appeal than its predecessors. According to Herbert, the design of the 2015 NX originated with the power of performance vehicles. “The 2015 NX unites the engineering input of racers with the sophistication and class of Lexus luxury,” he continues. The 2015 NX is available in two awe-inspiring models, the NX 200t with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and the NX 300h hybrid. Lexus now offers six hybrid vehicles to choose

from — that’s more than any other luxury brand to date. Because of the kick-down function of the new transmission, the hybrid offers the powerful thrill that drivers have come to expect from other Lexus vehicles. Just seeing the Lexus NX is a pleasurable experience. The excitement in Herbert’s voice is unmistakeable as he describes the look of this sleek compact SUV. “The designers wanted something that would ‘pop’ and the NX definitely turns heads,” he says. While still upholding the Lexus tradition of impeccable quality, the Lexus NX features a sportier design that’s not only aerodynamic but very pleasing to the eye. “It’s an exciting time for Lexus,” Herbert says. “I’m very proud to be part of such a great brand.”

Creating Kitchens

With Heart By Trina Annand Photos Lorri-Ann Munro

W

hether you’re embarking on a renovation or building new, it pays to do your homework. With so many things to keep in mind, it’s important to pick the right professionals for the job. When a project involves cabinetry — whether it is a kitchen, bathroom, home office or commercial millwork — quality craftsmanship is key.

With a staff-based material testing system, the company uses top quality materials for each job.

“We’re small enough to listen, but big enough to deliver,” notes Shawn Liske, coowner of Pleasant Valley Cabinets. “We believe that being detail-oriented is key to a successful project.” Liske combines his nearly two decades of experience with a passion for cabinet making to bring clients’ dreams from paper to reality, every day. Serving clients from Thompson to Estevan, and Winnipeg to Regina, the company has developed a strong client base founded on trust, customer service and quality craftsmanship. A true family business, Pleasant Valley Cabinets counts Liske’s wife and co-owner, Kathleen, as well as their children, Dylan and Tiana, amongst the dedicated staff. The owners’ children can often be found working before and after school as the next generation of the company.

Working with a wide variety of cabinet and countertop materials allows Pleasant Valley Cabinets to create kitchens tailored to the homeowners’ personality. The owner remarks that style is often a matter of personal choice on the part of the homeowner. “We like to remind customers that trends come and go. It is best to make your project your own. From MDF to Bamboo, and laminate to quartz, it’s a matter of what your taste is. There are always creative ways to use materials to achieve the right look.”

From its humble beginnings as a oneman operation, Pleasant Valley Cabinets has gone through some cautious growth, recently acquiring Swan Valley Cabinet and its location. This approach has ensured the company has always made time for their clients with personal oneon-one service. “Each one of our employees brings a unique set of gifts and talents to the team. All of our staff members are like family; we truly treasure them. Happy employees are the foundation of a strong business,” says Liske.

“When renovating, I tell my clients it will get worse before it gets better. Remodeling a kitchen can be disruptive and messy, but the end result is well worth it,” Liske says. “There is a real sense of satisfaction when you are able to bring people’s dreams to life.”

Dedicated to creating kitchens for all styles and budgets, Pleasant Valley Cabinets is now offering a new line of budget-friendly cabinets. This allows homeowners to achieve a fresh look without investing in a custom-built kitchen project. “We take great pride in being a friendly and reliable business that people can trust. It’s a reputation we strive to meet every day,” Liske says. When a new kitchen or bath is your next project, it pays to trust the professionals, and no one is more professional than the experts at Pleasant Valley Cabinets.
