Brimming WITH LOVE

FOR HATS By Lisa Drader-Murphy National Fashion Columnist Photos Geoffrey Creighton

I

recently had the pleasure of exploring my “hat personality” with famous Canadian Milliner, Edie Orenstein. Imagine my surprise to stumble upon her opulent display of hand-made hats while wandering the Seaport Market in Halifax! I had first become familiar with Edie’s work years prior at her iconic Granville Island, Vancouver store, which I made a point of visiting every time my travels led me to the west coast. With Edie’s creative genius guiding me, I had so much fun exploring the variety of looks and styles for spring. We narrowed the vast hat-wearing opportunities down to five different looks. Surely every woman will find one of these to suit her lifestyle and aesthetic. Iconic—I loved wearing this style! The Panama-style hat exudes confidence, yet the brim is wide enough to provide a hint of privacy. This style conjurs visions of the English manor house, surrounding

gardens and nearby stables. It exudes taste, sophistication and elegance. “Iconic hats and clothing connect us with our history. Collectively, personally, books, movies, world events... We attach our dreams and alter egos to stories of history.” – Edie Orenstein, Milliner Gatsby—The flapper girl of the roaring 20s is the independent, unattached, unrestricted, flamboyant woman, not having to adhere to the rules. The “cloche” that topped the sweet pin curls and finger waves of the girls of this era has been a style that has endured the test of time and to this day is the most popular selling shape in women’s hats. It’s one of my favourite sassy silhouettes to pull off the “I’m sweet, and a little bit mischievous” look!

Romantic—The romantic hat harkens back to an innocent time. Pure, lovely, uncomplicated, these hats are everything feminine, natural, and emotionally driven. You may don a romantic hat whenever you’re in the mood for it, not just for the garden party. Wear this look when shielding oneself from the harshness of life. “Romantic fashion and hats transport us to a gentler, magical place, where things are simpler.” – Edie Orenstein, Milliner Travel & Leisure—The fedora is one of the easiest styles to wear. It is casual and comfortable, yet chic with its multinational flavour. It’s pack-ability and versatility transforms day to night looks. The style is light-hearted, playful, and somewhat androgynous. I love the juxtaposition of the masculine structure adorned with feathers, flowers and ribbon. Occasion—Some hats “rise to the occasion,” like a tuxedo or uniform. There is no mistaking that this is a special event. Imagine horse races, weddings, bar mitzvahs, elegant luncheons, cocktails; occasion-style hats mark formal events of any sort.

“Fashion is the non-verbal language of humanity (society) past and present. Hats are the accent, the flourish, and the poetry of that language regionally and globally.” – Edie Orenstein, Milliner “Fashion, like any language, and the use of it, is affected by culture, religion, politics, education, station, experience, personal identification of “tribe.” It all adds up to expression — personal, collective, conscious and unconscious. It says, “I belong,” “I am different,” or even “I’m trying to hide or disappear.” – Edie Orenstein, Milliner Lisa Drader-Murphy is one of Canada’s preeminent fashion designers, and presides over one of the few remaining fashion houses in the country to design, cut, and sew all of their own garments. Proudly selfdescribed as “an entrepreneur who happens to design women’s clothing,” she has been the creative and driving force behind the celebrated “Turbine” label for more than 17 years, as well as the new and exclusive “Lisa Drader-Murphy” line.

Antony invites everyone to come in and look around. Shoe La La will be celebrating its official grand opening in May, during a weekend filled with special sales, refreshments and tons of fun! “Clothes and shoes should always be fun!” Antony says with a smile. “Also, you should be able to look fantastic without having to break the bank. Wellness Seniors Dedication to Healthy Living:

FOR

By Alyssa Rudyck

While it is important to stay active, eat right and manage health risks at any age, these considerations can be of particular importance to seniors who, along dealing with increased difficultly maintaining an active lifestyle, may be more susceptible to illness and injury.

eing active, eating well and exercising regularly can help reduce the risk of health problems,” explains Sherri Walker, director of homecare for the Sunrise Health Region. Walker explains that maintaining a healthy lifestyle as we age is an essential component to chronic disease management, and can help reduce the risk of developing illnesses such diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease. Although continuing to stay active and exercising regularly may become more difficult as we age, Walker explains that there are always options available to seniors who are willing to do what they can to remain active and reduce the risk of future injury. “I think it is really just about doing as much as you can everyday safely, and planning ahead for what you can do to stay active in different seasons, whether there is indoor walking or low-cost exercise programs that may be offered in the community,” says Walker. The Sunrise Health Region has started active aging exercise programs in a lot of communities, which are geared towards doing a general exercise program

in any venue where seniors gather, such as card groups, churches and senior centers. “You really just need to do some preplanning and research, and decide on the best option for you,” says Walker. Other popular physical activities for seniors may include swimming and aqua aerobics, yoga, walking with friends or on a treadmill, bowling, and even moderate biking or nature hikes.

Being active, eating well and exercising regularly can help reduce the risk of health problems.

Walker explains that along with promoting a healthy lifestyle, staying active can also help decrease the risk of injury, as muscle strengthening and active living helps to prevent falls, which are a big risk for seniors. In fact, falls are regarded as such a prominent issue among individuals over the age of 65 that initiatives have been put in place across Saskatchewan to help raise awareness on fall prevention. Safe Saskatchewan is one such organization that exists to promote injury prevention amongst Saskatchewan seniors. According to their mandate, which can be accessed online, Safe Saskatchewan engages in collaborative efforts geared to educate the public on fall prevention tactics and services. Their goals include

promoting optimal health and maximized independence, advocating healthy public policies and practices, and educating others on the various ways reduce and manage fall-related risks. Among other tactics, Safe Saskatchewan encourages seniors to participate in activities such as moderate weight lifting, Tai Chi, leg strengthening and balance training. They also suggest removing risks at home and within the community. Maintaining a healthy diet is another great way to stay energized for activities throughout the day, promote strong bones and muscles, support a healthy immune system to help ward off colds and flus, and recover more quickly when illness or injury strikes. If you’re unsure of where to begin, Sunrise Health Region has dietary professionals who can provide information on healthy meal planning and daily exercises. Enrich your life through a continued commitment to healthy living.

Lapband Surgery Not as Safe as it Sounds

D

ieting can help people lose a significant amount of weight but it does not help them keep it off. Almost all people who lose weight through dieting (95 per cent) regain those pounds within the next five years. Indeed, the US Food and Drug Administration stated in 2009 that not a single diet company was able to show evidence of long-term success. For morbidly obese people who want to lose a lot of weight and keep that weight off, bariatric surgery is the only effective method according to the Canadian Medical Association. WLF Medical is a Canadian company that specializes in bariatric surgery. It is one of

16

FineLifestyles

PARKLAND SASKATCHEWAN

the top 10 bariatric clinics in the world and has been named an International Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. WLF Medical performs all three types of bariatric surgical procedures for weight loss: lapband surgery, gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass surgery. All three procedures are more effective than dieting as a means of extreme weight loss, but not all procedures are equally effective. Lapband surgery is a sub-optimal initial choice for bariatric surgery, according to Melanie Wildman, president and owner of WLF Medical. Lapband surgery involves the laparoscopic placement of

an adjustable silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach. The band is slowly tightened through the injection of a saline solution via a needle into an internal port. Lapband surgery results in the least amount of weight loss of all gastric surgeries with 40 to 50 per cent excess weight loss after one year, compared to 60 to 77 per cent with gastric sleeve surgery and 70 per cent with gastric bypass surgery. Lapband surgery is perceived by many as reversible, less invasive and as the safest medical option. However, this is not the case. Lapband surgery actually has the highest risk of complication of any bariatric surgical procedure, as adjusting

of the band makes tissue scarring and adhesions inevitable. With lapband surgery there is also the possibility of complications arising involving the internal access port where saline solution is added with a needle to tighten the band. These include disconnection of the port from the tubing, port displacement and port-site infection. Half of all patients with lapbands end up having it removed. Since lapband surgery does not affect a person’s hormones or metabolism and is completely reliant upon restricting the amount of food one can eat, removal of the band invariably results in the patient regaining all the weight that had been lost. As a result, many lapband patients choose to try gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery at a later date. Unfortunately, the scarring that results from having had a lapband greatly increases the chances of medical complications occurring during gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery; such a patient is five times more likely to

experience complications than a patient who has not had a lapband previously. Gastric sleeve surgery is the most effective and safest type of bariatric weight loss surgery. Wildman states, “Our patients say they appreciate the simplicity of the sleeve and the fact that it does not involve rerouting intestines or require a medical procedure.” WLF Medical provides patients with ongoing support through comprehensive preoperative education and post-operative follow-ups. Book an appointment with WLF Medical today and start exploring the different options for weight loss surgery.

very March, millions of people tune in to watch the annual Academy Awards. The glitz and glamour of Hollywood and the world of filmmaking may feel like an untouchable world. However, every year, film history is made right here in Saskatchewan at the Yorkton Film Festival (YFF). Between 1953 and 2006, 20 films screened at YFF went on to be nominated for an Academy Award, and five of those won an Oscar in their category. Not only does YFF highlight the film industry here at home, they screen and celebrate films from around Canada. YFF was established in 1947 by a group of volunteers, becoming the first festival of its kind in all of North America. There are over 5,000 film festivals around the world today; so the fact that YFF has a special place in film history (by being one of the first), and is also well known and respected, is certainly something to be proud of. Like most endeavours — and much like filmmaking — the festival has had struggles. It was 10 years from the time of its inception before it gained official recognition, when in 1957 the Association of Motion Picture Producers and Laboratories of Canada presented the Yorkton Film Council with a Certificate of Merit. Then, in the 1960s, televisions arrived in most households. Despite the suffering festival attendance due to this captivating new technology, festival leaders decided to forge ahead. This trend of perseverance and determination has allowed the festival to thrive up to current day. But, the festival may now be facing another obstacle. In September of 2013, the Saskatchewan government decided to cut the film tax credit, to a cacophony of much controversy. This was devastating news; the Saskatchewan film industry, as people knew it, had ended. In the following months, skilled industry workers packed up and left the province. Randy Goulden, executive director of YFF, and one of two full-time festival staff, says the continuation of the festival will not suffer, partly due to the fact that it’s a national festival and receives submissions from across Canada. And, despite the collapse of the Saskatchewan tax credit and the changing face of the provincial film industry, the number of submissions received provincially has not suffered. “Our success owes thanks to the strength we have with our board of directors and jury committee across Canada,” says Goulden. Thanks to the festival’s innovation and determination, the YFF will celebrate its 67th anniversary from May 22 to 25, 2014. “The partnerships we have within the city of Yorkton and throughout Saskatchewan have been very supportive and that’s the reason we’ve been able to meet expectations for the last 67 years,” expresses Goulden. Registration for this years’ festival is now open — don’t miss your chance to share in the celebration of another wonderful year of film, and support an important part of the continuing Saskatchewan film industry. www.goldensheafawards.com

Home Away From Home by Alyssa Rudyck

H

ome is more than a roof over our heads or a place to hang our hat; it is a place where we can be ourselves, away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. It is a place that belongs to us, and where we in turn feel like we belong. A home away from home is much the same. Although it may not be your permanent residence, it is a place you can always come back to and, no matter how much time has passed or what has happened in between, feel like you are right back where you belong. It is a place where memories are made, and later returned to. Everybody has a special place like this. Yours might be the tiny barn-red cabin that you and your extended family crammed into for a few weeks every summer, all eight of you plus the dogs, making routines rituals, spending your days at the beach and your nights eating ice cream. Maybe your home away from home is your lake-front property, the one you bought after you and your spouse retired. Where you finally learned to play the piano, and have hung as many photos of your grandchildren as the walls can take. Where your family visits you on weekends and you cook the same meals you did when your kids were growing up, and are reminded of a time when they were only children. Your home away from home might be more expansive. It might span an entire provincial park, the one where, since you were eight, you and your dad have camped together, just the two of you. Where you have hiked all day and canoed downstream and fallen asleep to the stars and woken up to the sound of birds singing. Where everything you own takes on the potent smell of campfire and a meal is whatever you can create with canned foods and a cast iron pan. Or maybe your home away from home is the RV that you and your family pile into every year and drive up to the lake. Where you and your sister spend time actually talking to each other, sharing secrets and making plans for the rest of your lives. Where you can just sit and read, watching the clouds drift by, making friends with strangers you encounter along the way and learning new things about the world. Maybe your home away from home is the fishing resort where you used to work during the summers, where you first met your significant other, where you still go every summer, teaching your kids to fish and dreaming up delicious ways to cook your catch of the day. No matter where your home away from home is, whether it is your summer home or your weekend retreat or the place you plan to retire, it is your special place, somewhere you go to break away from the world for a while, get back to nature, rekindle relationships and, most of all, find that feeling of coming home.

Further, a roster of well-known celebrities and outdoor authorities hit the stage to share a wealth of how-to tips and tactics, stories and more.

Last held this past March, POSE saw over 6,000 people walk through the doors to check out the various booths on display and listen to speakers. Beasley of Canada in the Rough, Brad Fry of Canadian Guide Life, Dave Bennett, Trapper Gord, as well as Heather and Kevin Wilson. As a registered non-profit organization, net revenues from POSE and related functions are applied to two distinct projects. The first and most immediate priority involves funding youth archery programs in the Yorkton/Parkland area. Long-term plans include construction of an indoor archery shooting facility, which includes purchasing and maintaining state-of-the-art archery equipment, as well as training coaches for school and club programs. For the past three years POSE has made financial donations to Columbia, McKnoll, Melville Comprehensive, Saltcoats, Sturgis and Yorkdale schools to help fund their National Archery Schools Program (NASP). For the past two years they also donated bows to the NASP provincials and in 2014 rented the Flexi-Hall in Yorkton, where the provincials were held. Local archery clubs, including Melville Tru-Flite and Yorkton Broken Arrow, have held an indoor 3-D shoot during the show for the past three years, with all proceeds donated back to the clubs. POSE also donated money made from auctioning several hand-crafted knives back to a family to help with educational needs for their child with autism. In 2014, POSE began inducting people into the Canadian Outdoor Hall of Fame. The first two inductees were Garry Donald and Bentley Coben, who have both been extremely influential in the outdoor industry, helping many of the personalities you see on WILD TV get where they are today. This will be the first of many inductions that will take place each year during the show banquet. The directors would like to thank all sponsors and volunteers; they recognize their support during the past three years has made this the biggest and best outdoor show in western Canada. You can visit the website or Facebook page to see a complete list of sponsors. In 2014, everyone who entered the show was given entry into three major door

prize draws; a Can-Am Outlander Quad, fishing trip at Eagle West Resort and a fishing trip with Cat Daddy. The lucky winner of the new Can-Am Outlander quad was Marvin Curtis, the Eagle West Fishing Trip winner was Jeff Swanson, and the Cat Daddy Fishing trip winner was Lee Janet. Stay tuned for POSE 2015, which we hope will be bigger and better than ever — we look forward to seeing you there.

he roots of golf are often debated — some believe it originated in China, and others believe it came from Holland. However, it was the Scottish who created something that most resembles a modern golf game. A sport that captured the passion of Scots so greatly that in 1457 the game was banned along with football (or as we call it, soccer), to ensure the population would practice archery, which was a fundamental part of their defence. The law was of course repealed almost 50 years later, and in 1744, Edinburgh welcomed the world’s first golf club. For centuries, golf was considered a man’s game. Then, in the 1950s, women got their shot at professional golfing, rather than simply playing for fun. In Canada, golf has become a favoured sport during warmer weather and has even been enjoyed in the winter at some courses with somewhat looser rules. For some time now, golfing has been considered the perfect family sport. Though we aren’t all going to be pros like Tiger Woods, his ascent has spawned a much more active juniors’ league. It’s never too early to start teaching children golf — that is, as long as they can stand and hold a plastic club. Golf classes are regularly offered for children as young as five, and there are even tournaments for aspiring young golfers. Learning golf can increase motor skills, concentration, perseverance,

as well as teach important life skills, such as honesty, respect and cooperation — tools they will carry for the rest of their lives. A perfect way to start out with kids is by using a small putting green in the backyard, which will provide years of family fun.

it becomes increasingly difficult to develop new friendships. Joining a golf club gives people the opportunity to expand their social network. Friendships made at the golf course are not sealed by education or profession, but rather by a shared love of the game.

There are many benefits to playing golf. One of these is the ability to be a lifetime player; people can enjoy the sport from childhood all the way into their senior years. Players will also find health benefits, such as mood enhancement and stress reduction from being outdoors. Golfers gain valuable Vitamin D from the sun, which raises serotonin levels and improves immune function. On top of it all, walking a course is a great source of exercise with a low risk of injury — the perfect way to maintain fitness at any age.

Golfing can be a very competitive sport, pitting friends and family against each other, but the true challenge is bettering your own best scores. Golfing often teaches you humility; there you are with your flaws and personality on your sleeve

pushing to do better and full of hope for a better stroke and a better game. With 34 rules and a 210-page rules manual by the Royal Canadian Golf Association, the truest rule is to be fair and honest, guiding principles that are simple enough to remember and are beneficial in life. Golfing provides the perfect way to disconnect from a quick-paced world. Instead of corresponding with friends online, your friends are right there with you — loving every minute of it!

Often thought of as the best way to seal a business deal, golf is also great for networking and building lasting relationships. As we age,

Lake Regional Park. Visitors who come to the park to golf can stay and play while they enjoy the park’s camping, fishing, swimming and hiking amenities. Last year, the course welcomed Larry Schick, a man who brought with him years of experience in golf course construction, as director of operations and grounds. Schick said he is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with renowned golf course architect Les Furber of GDS Golf Design Services, and is excited about the new back nine. While the routing of the greens will remain much the same, six new forward tees will be added to cater to juniors and higher handicap golfers. The surrounds and bunkers will be reshaped, as well as some restructuring to the fairways, and installation of new irrigation and drainage systems, to prevent future flooding. A portion of the costs to rebuild the course came from provincial disaster relief, and hundreds of trees have been added thanks to a program through TD Bank. But it wouldn’t be possible for the course to rebuild if not for the hard work of the fundraising crew, and the support of the community. “It’s been much stress and hard work all winter, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel and when we’re done we’ll have a great course, and that is the most exciting thing for me, “ says Schick.

I

t’s an exciting time for both staff and visitors at York Lake Golf and Country Club. After two devastating floods in the summer of 2010 destroyed the back nine holes of the scenic Yorkton golf course, staff, members and community volunteers went into rebuild mode, investing countless hours to make the course better than ever. Tom Seeley, a long time Men’s Club executive and Back 9 Fundraising Committee member, says the goal is to

have the back nine finished by the end of the 2014 season, with the full course operational by next season. “The flood really did a lot of damage, but to look on the positive side — when we’re done, the back nine will be just beautiful,” says Seeley. A self-described passionate golfer, Seeley has been playing York Lake for more than 35 years — when it was a modest nine holes on sand. Over the years he watched as the course grew to 18 holes on lush greens, and became one of the key attractions at York

Seeley says the reason people have always loved to play York Lake is because it’s the kind of course that offers a great welcoming atmosphere for everyone. “It’s comfortable for families and golfers of all skill levels, and every age,” says Seeley. “That enjoyable comfortable atmosphere has just always been there.” There is even a scenic fire pit and picnic area, which is available for family reunions or corporate events, and a great chance for golfers to play nine holes, then relax with friends or family. On Saturday, May 10, the club will host a “Back 9 Fundraising Supper, Auction and Cabaret.” Tickets are $25 per person. rive to the south edge of Kelvington, and you’ll see why this Parkland community of 900 is called ‘Canada’s Hockey Factory.’ A mural erected in the 1990’s depicts the hockey cards of six former NHL players, each from Kelvington. With three annual hockey tournaments and an esteemed hockey school that draws players from across the country, the community’s pride and devotion to the sport continues. But Kelvington is more than just a hockey town. Its location nearby to Greenwater Lake Provincial Park and several other lakes offers residents and tourists opportunities for fishing, boating and camping. In the winter season, the region is popular for snowmobiling, snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing. “People will go to a small community and say, ‘I’m in the middle nowhere’,” says Kelvington Mayor Trevor Lowey. “But we’re at the edge of everywhere.” The town’s nine-hole golf course holds several tournaments a year, drawing golfers from neighbouring areas. Both residents and visitors to Kelvington take advantage of hunting season, hunting game (such as moose, elk, and bear), and fowl (such as geese and ducks). Some local farmers rent out rooms for visiting hunters, and an annual fall supper brings the hunting community together at Kelvington’s community centre. A range of indoor activities can be enjoyed in Kelvington as well. The Kelvington Legion Community Centre offers an exercise program twice weekly, with residents taking part in a variety of classes such as zumba and yoga. A bowling arena, skating rink, curling club and fitness centre keep residents active year round, and a dance school offers classes including jazz and ballroom. A drop-in centre for seniors features pool and card games. “Kelvington is a laidback community that gives you the opportunity to go out and enjoy all aspects of life,” says Mayor Lowey. Kelvington is also home to several businesses, from restaurants to retail. The

economy is based primarily on agriculture, with Viterra, Richardson Pioneer and John Deere providing crop production services and equipment for local farmers. Chinese dining, fast food and home cooked-style meals are also available at local eateries. Clothing and gift shops, a health store, pharmacy, and co-op with groceries, hardware and a service station supply residents with everything they need for daily living. “We have several stores that cater to a wide selection of needs,” says Mayor Lowey. Visitors to Kelvington can stay at the Sportsman Motel, which also offers fine dining. Though 65 per cent of the town’s population is over the age of 65, youth are also an integral part of Kelvington. Robert Melrose Elementary provides education for kindergarten through grade 5, and the faculty at Kelvington High School teaches grades 6 through 12. Students from the surrounding communities as well as local youth attend Kelvington’s schools. One of Kelvington’s most exciting annual events is the Agricultural Fair and Race Meet, held over the August long weekend. People from all over east Saskatchewan and Manitoba come to Kelvington for the event’s chariot racing, chuck wagons, heavy horse pulls, and cow and horse shows. On the weekend of June 7th-8th of this year, Kelvington is holding a fundraiser to build a new health care facility. A charity auction and dance are slated as part of the weekend’s events. Some of the NHL players and other world-class athletes from Kelvington will be part of the event’s special guests. “The theme is the sporting community that Kelvington has nurtured,” says Mayor Lowey. Looking to the future, Mayor Lowey says Kelvington’s leaders are working to attract a wider range of industries to the community. “We’re trying to grow and maintain it, and looking in different directions to diversify.” www.townofkelvington.com

askatchewan was built on the principles of hard work, determination and resilience. With the shifting economy these values are more important than ever. The new focus of the economy has led many family farms to evaluate their future, as they decide whether to expand or shut down. When choosing to buy or sell land in the province, one name stands out as a leader in the field: RE/MAX®, the number one real estate company world-wide. Realtor Ted Cawkwell is a rising star in the

company’s ranks, using his unique blend of experience and customer service to find the perfect agricultural property or price for his clients. Having grown up on a generational farm near Nut Mountain, Cawkwell learned what it takes to run a farm from the bottom up. “Through farming I learned a very strong work ethic and developed a strong character built on integrity and honesty,” states Cawkwell. His road to real estate led him through many different agriculture- and people-related industries,

which continually added to the experience he now brings to each and every client. “I worked as a farmer, with farmers and for farmers, so I understand the farming industry, the business model and all aspects of the agriculture industry. I am not your average realtor in many ways. My experience and background gives me a unique perspective,” remarks Cawkwell. Equally comfortable in a suit and tie, or jeans and a ball cap, the realtor dedicates himself to each and every client, whether they are a local farmer or a large

corporation. “My clients are my number one priority. I travel 6,000 kilometres in a month for them. Working with local clients or investors, my goals are the same: to make them feel understood and important, providing them with whatever support they need,” notes Cawkwell. To ensure superior service for his clients, the realtor has two assistants so he can focus exclusively on getting a job done, down to the very last detail - a winning approach made evident by his many awards, including becoming the 11th-ranking commercial realtor for RE/MAX® in Canada for 2013. Trust, honesty and hard work are the realtor’s guiding principles for ensuring success, and these attributes also extend to Cawkwell’s charitable efforts. Donating to charities of a client’s choice for sales, purchases and referrals, the realtor even hosts an annual childrens’ fishing event. He is continually focused on making the province a better place anyway he can. Whether buying or selling farmland, trust Cawkwell to provide exemplary customer service, ensuring you the best value, the best experience and the best results. Ted Cawkwell is an expert in his field — let him be an expert in yours.

camping,” says Hartl. The knowledge of Lintlaw Service’s staff helps bring them back again and again. Knowing that the next nearest dealer is an hour and a half away, Lintlaw Service puts a strong emphasis on keeping parts and supplies in stock. They even stock parts for farming equipment, to meet local needs. “If anyone has problems, we’re the first ones they talk to,” says Hartl. This little shop in the middle of nowhere has what customers are looking for more often than larger dealers in the cities. “There are a lot of places like us in the cities, but with what it costs them for their extra overhead, we

end up being able to supply more units and more inventory,” says Hartl. From new and used off-road vehicles, to replacing the windshield in the family van, Lintlaw Service is the service and supply store on the edge of the forest to serve all of your recreational mechanical needs. With a little help from their experts, you’ll be on the trails in no time. Lintlaw Service Highway 49 and Main Street Lintlaw, SK 306.325.2020 www.lintlawservice.com

Guestrooms

They Won’t Want to Leave By Rebecca Schneidereit

T

he guest bedroom is something of a paradox. The chamber is usually empty in the homes of even the most prolific entertainers. Yet, when a guestroom is needed, every inch is necessary — and gratefully appreciated. So how can you ensure that your guestroom is used to the hilt, whether occupied or not? Below, Fine Lifestyles offers a series of tips to ensure any overnight visitor — from nearest, dearest family to friendsof-friends-of-friends — will feel warmly welcomed. (We’ve even thrown in a little advice to ensure the room doesn’t “take up space” between guests.)

48

FineLifestyles

PARKLAND SASKATCHEWAN

Keep a Level Head. If you can, avoid cloistering your guestroom away on a top floor. Guests wrangling heavy suitcases don’t want to deadlift them up double flights of stairs; plus, some visitors may have mobility concerns. An entry-level space, convenient to kitchen and laundry, is your best bet. Beware Double Duty. “Guestroomsslash-offices” may seem space-efficient, but guests sharing space with a filing cabinet know they’ve interrupted your routine. And don’t turn your guestroom into a storage closet; visitors shouldn’t have to curate important objects or documents!

Exceptions to the Rule. On the other hand, it’s sensible — generous, even — to store things in your guestroom that might benefit guests. A library, “man-cave” or recroom-turned-guestroom offers rainy-day enjoyment. (Books in an elegant case are beautiful and always useful — especially if you include a few picture books for guests with children.) If you’re an art collector, a guestroom gallery is a small stroke of genius: fresh eyes will have an opportunity to appreciate the work. A Bed Ahead. A dedicated guest room can accommodate various bed styles, while multipurpose rooms demand something easily concealed (a Murphy

Be Our Guest! Custom home construction and renovations give you control over your floor plan — take advantage of that fact. Fine Lifestyles editor Sherry Lee, is a fan of the en-suite bath; a balcony is charming, and a separate “garden entrance” ensures privacy and quiet returns from “nights on the town.”

bed or folding wooden futon are stylish, sturdy options). Be especially choosy about “hidden” beds: comfort is more important than convenience, and guests who just stumbled off a red-eye need a good night’s sleep. Know Your Audience. Guests are not created equal; what charms one may irk the next. Many “experts” recommend decorating guest bedrooms with flowers, but if your sister-in-law arrives with five children in tow, a bouquet in a crystal vase is a recipe for disaster. Suit personal touches to each visitor.

Next-Level Necessities. To pamper guests without overwhelming them, consider their needs, and then add unique touches. Carafes are frequently recommended in guestrooms, but for sightseeing houseguests, something portable is more useful. A high-end bottled water or specially-chosen travel mug go “above and beyond.” And don’t get so carried away with “finishing touches” that you neglect to provide necessities. Canadian Hospitality. It’s easy to misread Canadian climates, and it’s a host’s job to help guests weather surprises (pun intended), whether that means providing socks, mittens and packets of hot cocoa, or flip-flops and inexpensive sunglasses. And make sure guestroom trappings are seasonally appropriate — no white lace coverlets in winter or vintage quilts in July. Goodbye Gifts. Parting presents for guests should be both lightweight and sturdy; save hardcovers or bottled preserves

o matter what style or size of home you live in, the kitchen is likely the place where your family gathers most — to cook, converse and spend quality time. Making this space as functional and visually pleasing as possible is an investment into the heart of your home. The expert team at Premier Cabinets specializes in creating cabinetry and countertops tailored to your lifestyle. “We’re about quality,” says Peter Fedorchuk, owner of the 15-year-old business. “We want to exceed your expectations, so you’re happier with the outcome than you thought possible. Service is very important to us.”

Clients of Premier Cabinets have the benefit of designing their cabinets and counters directly with Peter, who has over 30 years experience in the industry. You can view a range of displays at Premier Cabinets, and consult with Peter on what options will best suit your kitchen’s style and layout. Information about products and options are available on the company’s newly designed website, and a photo gallery is provided to give future clients some visual ideas for their own home. Whether you’re renovating or choosing styles for a brand-new home, Premier Cabinets aims to accommodate your family’s needs. “People’s lifestyles are taken into consideration,” says Peter. “We ask

about the age groups in the family, if anyone works from home, and how they work at their counter. We’ll do a lot of talking, and get a feel for what you want. We guide our clients through the entire process.” Premier Cabinets offers a variety of styles and materials to customize your kitchen. Wood options including maple, cherry, walnut, alder and oak are available, along with custom colours, glazes, antiquing finishes, rustic characteristics and distressing options. Doors can range from traditional five-piece panels to the more contemporary flat one-piece. Clients can choose from a selection of pulls and knobs, and in keeping with the newest trends, soft close technology is used on cabinets. Peter

says Premier Cabinets incorporates plenty of drawers in their designs for ease of use and accessibility. Laminate countertops are made in-house, with quartz and granite options also offered. Premier Cabinets custom fits their cabinetry and counters, ensuring renovations appear original. “Your renovation should look like it belongs,” says Peter. “We do custom sizing, fitting and installation, and our installers are very experienced. Our customer’s satisfaction is number one,” says Peter. With these types of projects, other trades are often involved to complete the project as envisioned by the customer. “Premier Cabinets strives to

cooperate and coordinate with flooring installers, electricians and plumbers, and be flexible with timelines as the project goes forward,” says Peter. Making their client’s dream kitchen a reality is the driving force of Premier Cabinets. “Our team is passionate about our work and that is reflected in our clients’ satisfaction,” says Peter. “Our company’s motto is ‘Pride and workmanship guarantees a quality product’.”

Revolutionizing the Overhead Door Industry

T

he Garage Door Depot is one of the leading Canadian retailers of residential and commercial garage doors, openers and accessories. Franchised from coast to coast, they offer customers the latest products from top industry brands, professional installation, and exceptional customer service. “The purpose of our company is to change the image of overhead door companies,” says Mike Dirven, owner of the Regina, Saskatoon and Yorkton Garage Door Depot franchises with his wife, Debbie Dirven. “We recognize that the overhead door industry, like every other industry, is always changing,

54

and we pride ourselves on trying to be on top of all of the current trends. Currently, the strongest trends are door colours, electronics, uniqueness and garage accessories.” The Dirvens operate as a family business, which includes their eldest son, Justin. Together, Dirven and his son manage sales, service, repairs and installations. As the Office Manager, Debbie takes care of dayto-day operations, bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, as well as some sales, and is assisted in the office by Reghan Olm, whose main responsibility is data entry. Since starting their business on May 1, 2012, they have set themselves

the highest goals in customer satisfaction, while recognizing that there is always room for improvement. “We pride ourselves on our great customer service, product knowledge, franchisee network, excellent employees, high quality and varied product lines, and above all, honesty,” says Dirven. “Our goals are to provide great customer service, to provide the right products to customers, to build a great reputation, to attract employees with the right attitudes, and to never stop learning and to continually look for new opportunities and products.”

The Garage Door Depot is outfitted with a fleet of fully equipped trucks, and is capable of doing most repairs and services without having to order in parts. They offer retail sales, service and installation of Amarr garage doors and Liftmaster Professional grade openers for both residential and commercial spaces. As well as their retail services they provide the Installation Services on behalf of Costco Wholesale and Lowes. They also install Clopay garage doors for Home Depot in Regina, and garage door openers for Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, and Canadian Tire stores on behalf of Quick Contractors. They focus on the sales and installation of others brands of doors as well, however, as part of their commitment to meet customer needs. “Our customers are very important to us, because without them we would not succeed,” notes Dirven. To make the process as convenient as possible for clients, The Garage Door Depot offers free inhome garage door replacement estimates. To ensure that the job is always done right, every technician is fully trained at The Garage Door Depot head office in Port Coquitlam, BC, and continues to receive training on new products and services on an ongoing basis. This Spring, Dirven and his son will head to North Carolina to participate in further training in commercial doors, rolling steel doors, fire doors, and Liftmaster commercial openers.

It is their enthusiasm and hardworking spirit that have helped Wagner’s Flooring remain an important part of the Yorkton community for so many years. “One thing that we are complimented on quite a bit is that it’s not just a place to purchase flooring; it’s the experience the consumer remembers,” says Nadine. “When we invite people into our store, it’s like inviting them into our homes. We care about the people and meeting their project needs.” The sales professionals go to great lengths to ensure they are giving their customers the best advice available. “We have a lot of knowledge through experience, and if we don’t have an answer for your question, we will find one,” says Nadine. “We can assist in matching any flooring choices into any lifestyle. There are thousands of options available.” Wagner’s has just moved into a new building on 464 Broadway Street East, along Highway 10, which has enabled them to expand their store greatly and enhance the customer experience. “The store showcases the products beautifully in a new bright, modern and inviting atmosphere, where there is space for everything,” says Nadine. Bill started as a teacher and in 1977 bridged into real estate. all their needs. “Last year, I sold a very loyal client a beautiful home that took six years to find.”

“I see myself as facilitator of real estate services,” says Bill. “I believe that if I listen well to both buyers and sellers, I can better meet their needs by making connections and showing them properties that are a fit.” Bill prides himself on doing his best for every client, no matter how long it takes to ensure the buyer finds a home that meets

Bill’s patience and teaching ability extends to other agents in the office who look to him for mentorship, guidance and clarification on real estate questions. He is jokingly referred to as the “godfather,” and was awarded the Spirit award by his peers in 2012 in recognition of his mentorship and leadership.

I recommend Bill to everyone I know that is in the market to buy or sell. From day one, he was a pleasure to work with and put our minds at ease, because of his integrity from start to finish. He made what can be a stressful and complex process as easy as we could ask for. A new service to Bill’s clients is enrolment in the Tranquilli-T® insurance program. This program is only available to RE/ MAX® Agents, and gives sellers peace of mind that if a delay or withdrawal should occur, their resulting expenses are covered up to $25,000. It also gives buyers protection with unlimited legal advice via telephone calls and up to $5,000 for actual court costs. “I willingly provide this added protection at my personal expense to all buyers and sellers that qualify under the terms of the program, because being able to protect my clients in this manner is very important to me.” Bill’s attention to detail and his commitment to going the extra mile

extends to helping clients determine necessary inspections and doing his best to help them avoid unpleasant surprises anywhere along the buying or selling journey. ast year, a St. Bernard dog in the Yorkton area named Sadie was on the verge of being euthanized. The family who owned it wanted a breed better suited for herding cattle. Sadie was brought into the care of Guardian Angel Animal Rescue (GAAR), a volunteer-run organization that coordinates the fostering and adoption of local dogs and cats in need. Soon after, she was adopted by a family, which included a boy with autism and a woman who assists with search and rescue missions. The dog and the boy bonded, and the woman trained her in search and rescue. “They

now have the perfect family pet,” says Shayne Yasinski, who runs GAAR along with Carmen Yasinski and Leanne OroszSauser. “We want to make sure every animal finds the perfect home.” A registered non-profit organization, GAAR relies on community members to foster animals awaiting adoption. Most of the animals are stray cats and dogs rescued by GARR. “People will find a stray, and we’ll get a call,” says Shayne. “Some days we get ten to fifteen calls.” Once taken in by GAAR, animals receive health checks and medical care through the team at the Animal Health Centre of Melville. “We have a really good

working relationship with the veterinarians there,” says Shayne. “They have been with GARR since the start.” GAAR currently has 12 homes fostering animals in Yorkton and the surrounding area. Shayne and Carmen foster several dogs themselves, in a heated building on their property. There is an ongoing need for more fosters in the community. “Someone that can open their home to an animal makes rooms for us to open our doors for another animal,” says Shayne. GAAR’s objective is rescuing animals, rather than re-homing them. “If people

spay and neuter their animals and look after them, there won’t be any unwanted animals, and a service like GAAR won’t be needed,” says Shayne. “People find having a dog can be too much for them, but it’s amazing what a couple of hours of training and a bag of treats can do.” People interested in fostering or adopting can learn more by visiting GAAR’s website, which shows up-to-date photos and information on dogs and cats awaiting homes. You can find out an animal’s breed, temperament and potential suitability for your family, and contact GAAR to arrange a meeting with the animal. Shayne says that fostering can be a good way to determine if you are ready for the commitment of pet ownership. “You have to be able to provide food, shelter, training if required, and medication if needed,” says Shayne. No matter how long you foster an animal for, the service you are providing is essential. “Every dog and every cat we have, if it wasn’t for GAAR, they would be left to die,” says Shayne.

Have a heated outbuilding on your property? Another way to assist GAAR is by sheltering cats through the Barn Buddies program. By providing food, water, and a safe place for cats unsuitable to be house pets, you are helping them, while also keeping your rodent population down. Along with foster homes, GAAR depends on community donations and fundraising. All donations go directly to medical care, food, and supplies for the animals. You can donate to GAAR through their website, and contact them to learn more about fundraising. GAAR’s goal for the future is to create a facility where the animals undergo their initial assessments to ensure good health prior to foster placement. “We need a place to put the animals for one or two days before getting them to the vet,” says Shayne. “It’s been a long time coming.” Guardian Angel Animal Rescue www.yorktongaar.com

or Sarah Kowalchuk, owning a pet store was a dream come true. “I was just out walking one day and noticed that the store was looking for a new franchisee, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity,” says Kowalchuk. “This is basically my dream job. I’ve always wanted to own a store like this. I liked the idea of working somewhere that makes people happy… our store makes people happy and it makes their dogs happy too.” Kowalchuk has been a pet owner her whole life. She currently has two dogs,

three cats and two rabbits, but has also owned various fish and small animals. “I’ve had pets my whole life; my house is basically a zoo,” Kowalchuk says. Her love of animals is evident as she speaks about the store. Kowalchuk has lived in Yorkton for the past 15 years, and she and her husband are very active in the business community. She is proud of her store’s friendly and social atmosphere, for both customers and their pets. Pet Valu has a boutique ambience, encouraging customers to add a stop at Pet Valu to their regular outing with

their pets. Many customers bring their dogs with them, and it becomes a social outing for the dog as well. This addition to the Saturday routine can also be helpful during the summer months. In addition to their grooming station, Pet Valu offers self-serve dog wash tubs, which can come in handy after your walk. Pet Valu prides itself on the quality of their products; they offer a wide range of pet foods, including holistic, super premium, raw, and grain-free products. As the largest pet store within 200 km, they have everything you need for fish or

reptiles, including terrariums, tanks, and lights. Although they do not have many reptiles for sale in the store, Pet Valu has everything you need for any breed of reptile you own. They also have small animals ready for adoption, including birds, fish, rabbits and other small mammals. Pet Valu features a professional grooming service, with a full-time dog groomer on staff and a separate room just for the grooming station. This convenient service is great for busy people who want to drop off their dog to be picked up later fully coiffed. Customers can call ahead for appointments, although drop-in service can be accommodated. Kowalchuk is very involved in local charities, including the SPCA, the Guardian Angel Animal Rescue (GAAR) and the Angels of Hope Animal Rescue. In April, Pet Valu is holding Pet Appreciation Month, where customers can donate to a local animal charity and get a “paw” on their wall. Pet Valu also offers inhouse adoption from rotating local shelters. Once a month, they host an Adoption Day, where people can bring their pets to interact with pets for adoption from different shelters. At Pet Valu, they enthusiastically care about pets and their owners. Stop by today. BELOW Taylor Lajambe-Koshel, Sarah Kowalchuk and Shelby Johnston

A great deal of attention is paid to the manufacturing process to make sure their product arrives at your table in its finest form. The OLiV team is trained in Moose Jaw by an internationally accredited olive oil sommelier, who teaches the technical aspects of all things olive oil. Their vinegars are sourced from the Modena region of Italy, guaranteeing their authenticity and quality.

Free guided taste-testing tours are available every day, all day, and guides will explain how products are developed while delighting customers as they sample the vast array of flavours. The tour will begin with the tasting of real extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). There is no turning back once true EVOO has enveloped someone’s taste buds. Guides will show customers the steps in tasting, so they will be exposed to all the richness and flavour that EVOO has to offer.

RIGHT Bev, Spencer & Darren Fuches

Next are the top grade white and dark balsamic vinegars, which have a rich, thick flavour and consistency that is delicious all on its own. Most customers are surprised at how tasty authentic balsamic vinegar is. Then the real fun starts with flavour combinations. Spencer, manager at the Yorkton location, has a culinary background, so he is able to cater a tasting tour to a customer’s every need. With extensive oil and vinegar flavour infusions — ranging from every fruit and berry imaginable, to savoury herb flavours like oregano, roasted garlic and spicy peppers, through to the exotic white and black truffles — the combinations are limitless. And don’t forget the dessert flavours! The OLiV staff will pair products together, catering to individual tastes and creating endless options for salads and breads, including marinades, sauces for pasta and stir-fry, and toppings for desserts. Customers are encouraged to share their inspired recipes with the rest of the OLiV community on Facebook and comment on other flavour combinations. Throughout a customer’s time at OLiV, the staff will explain the many health benefits of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Both are rich in antioxidants, which are known to help in the fight against cancer, aging

and help to reduce cholesterol levels. All flavours are created using only essential oils. No artificial chemicals or preservatives are used in the manufacturing process. Imagine a rich chocolate raspberry flavour with only 15 calories per tablespoon! What makes this truly a “boutique” experience is that the customer is the focus. They will see how passionate the staff are about their product and will come away with not only knowledge and a high level of customer service, but with something far more valuable: inspiration. Whether it’s their first time in the store or their 10th, customers will always be welcomed with a cheery smile and treated like one of the family, because once they try OliV’s products, they will be back again and again. hether you are celebrating a special occasion, showing someone you care, tackling a backyard landscape project, or looking to add some colour to your life, Flower House Florist & Garden Design, operating year round, has something exceptional for every taste and occasion. There, you’ll find a diverse selection of outdoor planters, specialty plants, fresh cut flowers and unique garden architectural décor such as cement faces, metal architecture and fountains. The store even carries clothing lines, including BENCH & Calvin Klein. Owners B.J. and Barb Barton saw a demand for this type of business in Kamsack. With a passion for landscape design, gardening and planting special containers, the Bartons decided to turn their zeal for plants and flowers into a business that would serve the needs of their community and surrounding areas. Sharing their green thumbs and creative flair, they opened Flower House Florist & Garden Design, along with their seasonal greenhouse, in the spring of 2012.

Beauty in

Bloom By Alyssa Rudyck

“The greenhouse is open seasonally, providing our unique line-up of succulents, grasses, foliage plants and tropicals, allowing customers to create their own personal style in their yard or patio. For those that wish to purchase ready-made outdoor planters and hanging baskets, we offer a large variety, all planted with our unique flair. In August we begin planting our own poinsettias ready for sale in December,” says Barb. What sets them apart, and gives them exclusivity, is their ability to offer a traditional look with a modern twist. “As with clothing, there are fashionable trends with plants. We try to captivate those trends while keeping it contemporary, making it attractive to most people’s tastes,” explains B.J. Along with being beautiful, the shelf life of their fresh cut flowers is extremely long, due to the fact that they have chosen a supplier that has their own out-of-country growers, which eliminates middlemen and flowers being stored in a dormant stage in a warehouse. Instead, product is expediently shipped and received.

“Our flowers are a beautiful, fresh, premium, long-lasting product, and we make certain that we can accommodate people at any price level by offering affordable options. Our customers always anticipate the next season, as they know there will be a fresh new product line coming,” says B.J. As the snow melts and people become anxious to be outside, the Bartons are gearing up to host their second “make your own planter” event, where customers have the opportunity to choose from a huge selection of containers and plants to make their own creation. Whether you are looking for a landscape consultation, wanting to book a custom planter, planning an event that requires fresh flowers, in need of a gift or shopping for trendy, casual clothing, Flower House Florist & Garden Design is there to help you find exactly what you need. Farming

in the

Parkland

Challenges and Opportunities By Tonya Lambert

A

t the end of January, the Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and the Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart announced that Yorkton’s Parkland Regional College would be offering a new program beginning in March — the Agricultural Operator Program. This program is designed to provide a skilled labour force to work on the province’s farms.

74

FineLifestyles

PARKLAND SASKATCHEWAN

“It is getting more and more difficult to get qualified workers,” says Bruce Brownlee, a grain farmer near Kelvington. “Equipment is becoming increasing technological. Not just anyone can operate a piece of machinery anymore.” The Agricultural Operator’s Program was designed to meet the need for skilled labourers. Dwight Pomedli, a grain farmer near Elfros, has been farming for 15 years and

in that time he has seen many changes. “Computer technology has changed farming in the last 10 years. We now have tractors that drive themselves, monitors that can tell us information about the crop we are harvesting, such as grain moisture and yields. We use GPS technology to minimize chemical waste (and cost) due to overlap by turning the sprayer booms on and off. The crops being grown today are being genetically modified to grow better

in our area and growing conditions and to be resistant to certain chemicals for weed and insect control. Even the marketing of our grains can now be done with a smart phone right from the tractor cab.” Susan and Dan Usipiuk, owners of SuDan Quarter Horses near Wynyard, note that livestock farmers have seen changes in their ability to test animals to see if they are carriers of certain genetic defects or diseases and then to breed them accordingly. Advances in the field of genetics has made it possible to inseminate an animal using frozen semen shipped from far away as well as to transplant the embryos of top quality animals into those of less geneticallydesirable ones, enabling the better animals to produce more offspring and to continue to perform other duties. Another change occurring on an increasing number of farms is the switch to a corporate business structure. Farms are larger than ever before, operating costs are higher and the business aspect of farming is increasingly complex. Bill Prybylski, who, along with his brother and nephews, operates a mixed farm near Willowbrook, notes, “As the manager of our farm, I spend as much time in an office — my own, the banker’s, grain companies’, equipment dealers’, input suppliers’, etc. — as I spend operating equipment.” He adds,

“The means by which we get the required work done has changed a lot, but the basic principle of farming has not.” Prybylski says that farms in the Parkland region are still composed of a blend of grain farms, cattle operations, mixed farms and some specialty farms. It is the size of farms that is the biggest difference. Notes Pomedli, “Farming has become big business; it is not just planting a crop on a piece of land any more. Many farming operations are multimillion dollar operations with employees.” Brownlee states that farmers are choosing to either increase the size of their operations substantially or are opting for smaller specialty farms catering to niche markets. An example of a specialty farm in the Parkland region is the Garlic Garden near Yorkton run by Anna and Darrel Schab. Young people considering a career in farming are advised to get a post-secondary education, whether in agriculture, such as the Agricultural Operators Program, or something else. “Farmers wear many hats,” notes Brownlee, “plumber, mechanic, electrician, bookkeeper, etc.” Pomedli agrees, “Getting a secondary education in almost anything can contribute to any farming operation.” Diversification is also advised. This might come in the form of having a mixed farming

operation or through having a source of off-farm income. Susan Usipiuk states, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If you are not going to farm on a large scale, be diverse. Have a mixed farm so that when one commodity is low, the other one or two are picking up the slack. I have noticed over the years that the farmers that have weathered storms like BSE and poor grains prices are the ones that had mixed farms. Always have a ‘Plan B’.” Things are good for farmers in the Parkland region now. Commodity prices are high and interest rates are low. Last fall saw a record harvest. There has been a backlog in transportation over the winter, but the federal government has recently ordered the CPR and CNR to begin hauling substantially more grain to market or face heavy fines. As always, farming is full of challenges and opportunities. “Farming is a great lifestyle but you have to love it to be successful at it,” cautions Prybylski. “The opportunity to grow the food that feeds the world is in itself rewarding but can also be very challenging.” Adds Pomedli, “Making the move back to the farm has been the best decision of my life. Raising a family on a farm and living life on the prairie has been nothing less than amazing.”

he Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association (AWSA) is an independent, non-profit organization based out of Yorkton. They work with all levels of government, as well as conservation organizations, citizens and communities of the Assiniboine River Watershed to protect the source waters of the Assiniboine River, its tributaries and aquifers within the watershed. The AWSA is governed by a 12-member board of directors, comprised of rural and urban representatives. The membership base includes 24 rural municipalities, two cities, eight towns and three villages. Since inception in 2007, the AWSA has grown from 24 to 37 members, and has completed over 11.5 million dollars worth of projects.

Activities of the AWSA are aimed at completing the key actions contained in their two Source Water Protection Plans (SWPPs) — The Assiniboine River SWPP and the Yorkton Area Aquifers SWPP. The AWSA is unique amongst the 10 provincial watershed groups in Saskatchewan in that they are the only organization implementing an aquifer plan. This is testament to the importance of groundwater in the ARW. Over 90 per cent of watershed residents rely on groundwater for their drinking water, with Yorkton being the only city in Saskatchewan that relies solely on groundwater to supply its residents with drinking water.

Council of the Federation, Excellence in Water Stewardship Award, Saskatchewan. The award was created by Canada’s premiers at the Council of the Federation in recognition that water is critical to human and ecosystem health. This award is presented in each province and territory in Canada. The award acknowledges the tremendous work the AWSA has done to assist agricultural producers in “greening up” various aspects of their operations.

In March of this year, the association was awarded with the prestigious 2014 TOP L–R Jesse Nielsen, coordinator, Katelyn Smith, technician, Aron Hershmiller, manager ABOVER L–R Don Olson, board chair; Aron Hershmiller, manager; Jesse Nielsen, coordinator.

Yorkton Co-op Agro Centre

Y

orkton Co-op’s Agro Centre is so much more than the name says. Although the business caters to farmers and ranchers (as the name “Farm and Ranch” suggests), it also serves truckers, outdoorsmen and safety personnel.

A full line of automotive and farm oils and lubricants can be found in every size from 1 litre to 1,000 litre totes. Pails and drums are kept in stock and ready for the spring seeding season. If it’s a filter or a battery you require, they’re sure to have what you need.

General manager Bruce Thurston wants the public to know the Agro Centre is home to more products than what might be expected. Yes, they have the traditional farm items such as feed, fencing supplies, posts, twine and livestock handling equipment, but they also carry a variety of pet foods, general tack, electrical and plumbing supplies, and animal health products.

The Yorkton Agro Centre has gone through a face-lift — its first since being built in 2003. The entire interior has been painted, new fixtures have replaced the old shelving, a new service counter greets customers as they come in, and the sales floor layout has completely changed. A new modern décor package has been added, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.

They also have an excellent selection of gloves, coveralls, safety vests and personal protective wear as well as a huge selection of boots for every occasion. If you’re in need of tools, they have a full range of hand and power tools for every job, big or small.

“Although there is still some work to be done to complete the renovation, our members will be very pleased with the end result,” says Thurston. The staff works hard to ensure a better shopping experience, and they invite you to come and check out the facility.

Seasonal items are abundant and you can find just the right lawnmower, hedge trimmer, garden tiller or a variety of other garden tools. Although winter is over, check this location out in the fall to pick up your next snow blower, winter shovel or sidewalk salt, since they carry those items too.

As the snow melts and temperatures rise, housebound Canadians feel the draw of the outdoors stronger than ever. With such a short summer season, warm weather activities often call for a journey as exciting as the destination.

W

hether exploring a local forest, a farm acreage, mudding, hunting or even fishing in lake country, All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) or Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs) can turn a good day into a great day with friends and family. The line between ATVs and UTVs is blurring everyday with motor enthusiasts wanting more for their money, and not wanting to limit performance simply to carry passengers. Traditionally, ATVs have been more nimble than UTVs and enjoy an avid racing circuit. A versatile ATV for those not racing in their spare time is the Argo. Available in eight and six- wheel versions, the Argo can also be converted to accommodate tracks. The vehicle’s most unique feature is its fully sealed body, which allows for amphibious travel crossing swamps, mucky areas, streams and small lakes with ease, making it a true all-terrain vehicle. The low wheel base of the Argo provides less impact on the ground, avoiding sticky situations. The Argo is also a great farm vehicle with towing capabilities of up to 2000 lb., winch accessories, bush guards and seating for four. The latest in ATV technology can be found on the Polaris Sportsman WV850 with Terrainarmor. The non-pneumatic tire’s unique cell design and resilient rubber formula means it is capable of traversing the roughest terrain. The never-flat tire is both tough and supple, withstanding .50 calibre, M4 and AK47 ballistic damage, and penetration by a railroad spike. With all-wheel drive, active-descent

control and upgraded shocks, riders can experience a smoother ride regardless of the destination. The single person vehicle is also perfect for transporting loads to remote cabins and cottages with 600 lb. of carrying potential and the ability to carry twice the fuel of its competitors. UTVs are most tempting for explorers that have work to do, as they usually feature the most space for loads and passengers. UTVs offer a wide variety of customization and accessories, from rear-dumping cargo holds, cab kits, in-cab heaters and even high-tech stereo systems. UTVs are a great vehicle for family fun when children are too young to ride on their own, and can easily transport pets as well. UTVs have also been undergoing a redesign with sport models. You can now find racing style one-person units that provide the comfort and safety of a UTV, but with the speed, agility and narrow wheelbase of an ATV. UTVs for work can be fitted with tracks rather than wheels to increase their performance and have also been used professionally by search and rescue groups, as well as military. The most important thing to remember when choosing an ATV or a UTV is what it will be used for. It is possible to combine working power and leisure activities in one vehicle, but careful research is required. Whether you are planning a simple day trip with friends or a week-long camping and fishing trip with family, there is a vehicle for every adventure. Canada is an amazing place — why not explore the great outdoors in style?
