THE UNDENIABLE
ALLURE of Gemstones By Trina Annand
M
arilyn Monroe famously sang Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend, but it was only in the 1930s that DeBeer’s began an aggressive marketing campaign to increase the stone’s popularity. With crystal clear white diamonds flooding the market, many people are turning to uniquely coloured diamonds and precious gemstones to create pieces as unique as their wearers. RUBY Traditionally known as July’s birthstone, this crimson beauty has been mined in Myanmar since 600 A.D. More recently, rubies have been discovered in Madagascar and under the receding glaciers of Greenland, yielding stones of astounding sizes. For centuries, the gem has been associated with strength, royalty and wealth. Rubies larger than five carats are so rare and prized that the most expensive ruby ever sold went for more than $3.6 million in 2006, greatly overshadowing white diamond prices at $425,000 per carat. The crimson colour of this stone symbolizes undying passion and courage, the perfect gift for any man or woman. SAPPHIRE Historically worn by royalty as a symbol of good fortune, virtue and wisdom, this September birthstone is most known for its dark blue colour. However, the stones can also be found in orange, purple, green and an almost coral pink colour called Padparadscha (lotus flower), which is the most valuable. In 1997, the world’s largest sapphire, at more than 61,000-carats, was discovered in Madagascar. Named the Millenium Sapphire, it is currently valued at $180 million. Often associated with stability, sapphires are the perfect centrepiece to a modern setting.

hen Brittini Beebe was expecting her first baby last year, she had a difficult time finding the items she needed for the new arrival in Yorkton and ended up travelling to Saskatoon and Regina to shop. This led to the decision by Brittini and her mother, Glenda Holmes, to open a store in the city that is devoted entirely to babies and infants up to the age of two. Rock-a-Buy Baby Boutique carries topquality products for your little one, some of which cannot be found anywhere in the province. On the store’s shelves you’ll find products such as West Coast Baby, Carmen West Creative, Noah’s Boytique, Baby K’tan and Playful Peanut, all of which were carefully selected by

Retreat RELAX, RECHARGE, RENEW By Sarah Vermette

s exciting as it is to travel and see the world, our holidays are often as exhausting as the everyday grind we're trying to unwind from. Between researching excursions, booking rooms and pounding the city pavement, we often forget to make space for relaxing, which is the one thing we desire and need. To avoid coming home from a vacation needing a vacation, consider a retreat. Retreats are designed to cater to the mind, body and spirit and will serve those whose sole aim is to relax, recharge and renew. To find a retreat best suited to your sensibilities considerable research may be required as there are several different options to consider, some of which are outlined here.
Yoga & Meditation Retreats Since the practice of yoga is popular throughout the western world, there are many retreats that are designed around yoga and meditation. Most of these will be holistic in nature, also providing healthy food plans, inspirational speakers, as well as spa and alternative health services, with the aim of nurturing all parts of a person. Think of sitting in stillness long enough to hear the depths of your heart.
Spa Retreats For those who want the ultimate experience in relaxation, a spa retreat offers every opportunity to make up for lost time in pampering yourself. Massages, mud wraps, saunas, pools and serene settings all come together to rejuvenate the body and allow the mind to de-stress. As the pressures of
everyday life stack up, the opportunity to be catered to for a week — or just the chance to have time with no obligations or responsibilities — can be worth every penny.
Equine Healing Retreats
The spiritual wisdom of horses has long been revered. Because horses are similar to humans in their limbic (emotional) brain region, they are able to provide honest and immediate feedback about the person they are facing, and begin to lead them into a healing state. Horses can help facilitate personal insight, which prompts healing through awareness. This type of retreat is perfect for those who wish for personal exploration and growth.
Adventure Retreats
For those who come to their centre through adventure, there are many options to consider. It might be something specifically focused, such as the challenge of walking up a mountain or camping on the plains of Africa. Some retreats offer a number of different adventures, such as archery, sailing, scuba diving, and more. These can be a wonderful option that will cater to the differing preferences within a family or group. Aside from more popular options mentioned above, there are also retreats designed specifically for men or women, as well as romantic retreats for couples. Others focus very specifically on certain areas, promoting the benefits of dancing, hugging, laughing, art, spiritual development and self-love. Take the time to think about what will nurture you and then begin to seek. Pursue www.retreatsonline.com as a starting point.

Update Your Look at

uilding trust with her clients is very important to hair stylist Jinelle Bierwagen, owner of Shear Concepts. “We come into physical contact with our clients and it’s a privilege we take very seriously,” says Bierwagen. “They allow us to come into their personal space and change how they look and how they see themselves — it has a big impact on them.” Bierwagen says the most fulfilling aspect of their work is having clients leave her salon feeling and looking great after an appointment. “It’s nice to know we can change their day,” says Bierwagen. Shear Concepts offers a chic, relaxed atmosphere in an intimate four-chair salon where clients and staff enjoy sharing and exchanging ideas and visiting with customers who pop in for a chat. “We work as a team,” says Bierwagen. “And we make sure, at the end of the day, every client is happy.” Besides styling hair with their exclusive Unite line, Shear Concepts also does nails with a line called BioSculpt. It’s the only breathable, flexible nail product available and offers a wide range of colours and nail art. Tattoo artist Sarah Pasloski, who’s been running Color Me Beautiful within Shear Concepts since last spring, has been a fabulous addition to the salon’s services. Color Me Beautiful offers a range of body art and body modifications from temporary to permanent. These services include body piercing, tattooing with a large selection of colours, and henna. use and disposable for the safety and well-being of her clients. Health board approved and inspected, Pasloski has also completed the Bloodbourne Pathogens course to provide the safest environment for clients. The henna used is all-natural and chemical free — this means no black henna is used, only dark brown. Clients are amazed by the work done by this young creative artist and are calling it the place to go for one of a kind original pieces. The salon also offers a retail area with some funky clothes, including a huge
variety of fun patterned leggings at fabulous prices, boot toppers, jewelry and purses. New cosmetic products in the salon include temporary natural lash extension systems by Lash Now that thicken eyelashes instantly and Instant Touch Up by Infiniti hair mascara for easy root at home touch-ups between colours.
we’re always changing and learning, whether it’s through life experiences or taking classes,” she says. “We want to give clients a fun, friendly place to come when they want to look and feel wonderful or just stop in and say hello. Everyone is welcome.”
Shear Concepts is about to expand its square footage with a move around the corner in the new year. Bierwagen plans to bring in more fashion accessories to help her clients update their look.

Skin damage caused by excessive exposure to sunlight such as age spots (sun induced freckles), brown pigment and mottled pigmentation. Age related skin imperfections, rosacea, wrinkles, signs of aging, broken capillaries, dark spots, blotchy skin colour, redness of the face and neck, enlarged pore size and uneven pigmentation. Unwanted skin conditions such as birthmarks, stretch marks, acne scars (pigments), or any other scars and tattoos. How is the Photo Rejuvenation procedure performed? A cold gel is usually applied to the area to be treated, and you may be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. The smooth glass surface of the IPL and piece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied. You may feel a slight sting that feels like the snapping of a rubber band. life changes influence the decision to remove tattoos such as allergic reactions, regrets about the decision, seeking or obtaining new employment or replacing one tattoo with another. What you need to know • A free consultation with our Laser Technician must be booked first. Enlighten will determine the cost per session based on the size of the tattoo. • Tattoo removal can take between 3-6 sessions, or more, depending on size, colour and depth of tattoo. • There is a 90-day healing period between appointments. • The procedure is uncomfortable. • Darker colours are easier to remove, yellow and white are more difficult. • We use a Yag Laser, which is the most effective technology for tattoo removal. Here at Enlighten Laser Melville/After Hours Salon we offer a wide range of services, including laser hair removal, body slimming, cellulite reduction, skin tightening, photo rejuvenation, rosasea treatment, manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, nail enhancements and hair services. Clean Eating
What Counts as ProCEssEd Foods? •

Glenda Nischuk RNCP Better Living Nutrition Better Living Centre 272 Broadway Street West Yorkton 306.783.0078 www.nutrition.betterlivingcentre.ca
C
lean eating is a deceptively simple concept. Rather than revolving around the idea of ingesting more or less of specific things (for instance, fewer calories or more protein), the idea is more about being mindful of the food’s pathway between its origin and your plate. At its simplest, clean eating is about eating whole foods, or “real” foods — those that are unprocessed or minimally processed, refined and handled, making them as close to their natural form as possible.
16
FineLifestyles
Parkland Saskatchewan
•
Additions of any kind — everything from salt, sugar and fat to aid flavour and mouth-feel, to the preservatives that keep food from spoiling too quickly. Changing the form of the natural food — examples of this would be removing the bran and germ from whole grains to create refined bread, which is depleted in beneficial nutrients like magnesium, selenium and fibre. Fo o d s with components manufactured in a lab — an easy way to clean up your diet is to look at the ingredient list on packaged foods. Heavily modified food tends to have additives that overstimulate the production of dopamine, the “pleasure” neurotransmitter, perpetuating a negative cycle of constant junk food cravings.
ClEan Eating tiPs 1. Avoid or eliminate processed foods 2. Avoid refined oils or margarines — opt for healthy fats instead. These include extra virgin coconut or olive oil, avocados, seeds and nuts. 3. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits — they are full of vitamins and essential for immune function. They are also high in heart-healthy fibre, which helps you feel full. Being low calorie, you can eat lots of them
without damaging your waistline. 4. Choose whole grains over refined — look for the word “whole” with the first ingredient in breads and pastas. If you are gluten-intolerant or have wheat allergies, opt for the gluten-free varieties. Whole grains include brown rice, amaranth, whole wheat, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, corn, millet, quinoa, rye, spelt and oats. 5. Eat less meat — eating less meat can help eliminate extra saturated fat from your diet. A serving of meat is just three ounces (the size of a deck of cards). Try switching it up with fibrerich plant sources of protein such as beans, tempeh or tofu. 6. Unsweeten your diet — skip the sodas, fruit juices, candy, packaged cookies, crackers and cakes altogether. 7. If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it. 8. Opt for organic as much as possible — this is the best way to avoid pesticides, GMOs and other harmful chemicals. If these are too expensive for you the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has a great list of less toxic fruits and vegetables and other foods. Clean eating may feel overwhelming at first, especially for people with many changes to make. My advice is to take baby steps. When shopping and preparing your meals remember that energy is made on the cellular level from the foods we choose. The only way to realize your personal health goals is to eat mindfully, one clean bite at a time.

hipboard life for me is a great deal of fun, excitement and, above all, diversity. Every single day brings along yet another selection of so many activities to do and things to see. My wife and I have tried countless times to at least do 50 per cent of what is offered onboard — alas, not yet. Often, when I ask folks if they have cruised before, there is a stock answer: “Oh, I would be so bored with nothing to do.” I just chuckle to myself because firstly, the word “bored” is never used in our household, and secondly, at what these non-cruisers are missing out on. Naturally, there are shows in the evening in the main theatres offering all manner of entertainment, from stand-up comedians to Broadway-like shows with singers, dancers and often acrobatic acts. On a recent cruise, Loretta Swit of MASH fame joined us for a few very entertaining shows. I had no idea that she was such a great singer and accomplished stage actress. There is always the opportunity to meet the celebrities on board and often mingle at a cocktail party or even join them for breakfast in the dining room or on the terrace. The singers, dancers and other performers are seen around the ship on a regular basis when they are not in rehearsals, oftentimes exercising in the gym or walking on the promenade deck.
As a presenter myself, I am fortunate to meet with the other performers backstage and chat about the ship’s goings-on and our next or previous ports of call. Usually the entertainers are contracted for several months and, as such, become a ship-board family. Don’t ever be shy to speak with the entertainment staff. They are, like all the crew, very personable, love to chat and are keen to ensure that your experience aboard is excellent. If you see any of them out and about on a shore excursion, in the gym or on deck, please introduce yourself.
Food is another arena that I hear comments about from non-cruisers, in particular that there is so much of it. Indeed there is an abundance of excellent food, indicating that you may wish to pack extra willpower for your next cruise. Anyone can overindulge on shore or on board — it’s an individual thing. The grand buffet(s) and dining room offer exquisite selections, reasonable portions and superb service. If this is not your cup of tea, you can grab a smaller meal on deck, at the grill or get room service and eat on your balcony.

Oceania offers the only culinary classes at sea where you actually get to participate, not simply observe. If you are a “foodie,” this is an amazing activity as you get to work right alongside chefs and often even a celebrity chef. Our February cruise with Oceania aboard Riviera boasted celebrity chef, Massimo. With food goes wine, and there is absolutely no shortage of great vintages aboard. On one cruise awhile back, I joined a wine tasting event and learned a great deal: mostly that I knew very little about wines. The staff is excellent and there is always a sommelier within reach to help you decide and guide you through the basics of wine

selection. Actually, the menu suggests a selection of wines that are perfectly paired with the chef’s selection at dinner, making even a neophyte like me seem knowledgeable. Oceania offers a pre-paid package deal for libations, which to my way of thinking is the way to go if you plan to sample what there is to offer. Check online or with your travel agent to determine what package level suits you given the length of time that you will be on board. If you are cruising in a wine region such as Argentina, Chile, the Mediterranean or France and Spain, there will be ample opportunity to sample the local treasures as well.
Long gone are the days of shuffleboard, white linens and fancy hats on board. The amount of activities that are available is absolutely astonishing; the only limitation is you and, of course, time. Plan ahead of time the types of activities that suit you the best and consider formulating a schedule. I know that you will be on holidays, but a list of what you’d like to do will come in handy in this “buffet” of cruising options. WINTER WONDERLAND W By Apolline Lucyk
inter winds are coming, and it’s time to stock up on hot chocolate and start baking. However, there are also preparations you can plan for your outdoor spaces to make your winter months more enjoyable. Your backyard does not have to be forgotten during the winter months; there are many things you can do with your backyard to make it your very own winter wonderland.
hOt tUBs There is nothing quite like relaxing in a hot tub with the fresh winter air surrounding you — on a bright winter afternoon or quiet winter night — and, thankfully, hot tubs can be enjoyed throughout the year. There are many amazing hot tubs on the market now with therapeutic features such as hydrotherapy, chromatherapy and aromatherapy, so it’s good to review all your options when choosing your hot tub, to ensure that you have all the features you desire.

heated gaZeBOs A heated gazebo is another backyard accessory which can allow you to enjoy your backyard in the winter in a cozy, luxurious environment. There are a wide variety of high-power gas and electric heaters on the market which can really warm up a space. These high-power heaters are excellent for warming up any outdoor space, but situating them in a gazebo or other partially-covered area helps retain the heat and shelters you from the snow, allowing you to enjoy the winter weather with just a little more comfort and warmth.
FIre PLaces & FIre PIts If you already have an outdoor fire place or fire pit, you probably already know how wonderful they are to get cozy around during the winter. An outdoor fire pit or fireplace can become the heart of your backyard in the winter, and requires essentially no maintenance or upkeep.
All one must do is keep well-stocked with firewood. There are many beautiful fire pits and fireplaces on the market, so look for one which fits the size and style of your backyard.
Ice Bars An ice bar is another feature you can add to truly light up your backyard, and make your winter experience more special. Like a year-round outdoor bar, an ice bar is the perfect place to entertain, or have a drink after dinner. There are many features you can add to your ice bar, such as coloured lights to decorate it in the evening, and an ice luge or shooter block to enjoy with your friends; this is a special ice sculpture with a narrow funnel carved into it through which you pour liquid to chill it, and they can be easily integrated into an ice bar.
Backyard skatIng rInks Everyone loves skating in the winter months, and skating can be even more enjoyable if the rink is right in your back yard. Believe it or not, it’s very easy and affordable; home hardware stores sell a variety of kits. It is far more convenient to supervise your children’s skating time if it is in your own back yard; for older children, a backyard rink provides a great alternative to going to a public one, especially if there is no rink nearby. LIghtIng If you want to be outside with friends or family on dark winter nights, and especially on the skating rink, there are beautiful options for illumination lighting that can dress up an outdoor space. Illumination LED models are a good option for year-round lighting year; they are designed to withstand the harshest temperature conditions, and can provide up to seven years of continuous light.

f you are in the need for custom straps, tarps or covers, then you needn’t look any further than Canora Weaving and Manufacturing. Based in Canora, General Manager Quentin Weinbender and Marketing Manager Robeel Rao have over fifteen years of experience in the business. Though they deal primarily in strapping, they can pretty much make anything. They have a big facility with three machines that

are going all the time, and rest assured, they can produce what you need faster and of higher quality than anywhere else in the region. “We don’t manufacture in bulk and we don’t keep stock,” explains Robeel. “Everything is made custom to fit. Our products are tailor made to you and your needs.”
This kind of philosophy is especially useful when you need tie-down straps. Polyester strapping was the original line of business for Canora Weaving and Manufacturing, and while they have expanded to other things, it remains their core business. They make custom strapping in widths from half an inch to two inches, produced according to client specification and to the level of strength needed for the use. In doing so,
Canora Weaving and Manufacturing has become renowned for their high quality, reinforced fabric that you can be sure to rely on.

“We use the best quality raw material,” Robeel explains. “We understand how important it is that we produce work of the utmost quality. Those straps have got to hold and if you go through us, I guarantee they will.” Strapping isn’t all that Canora Weaving and Manufacturing does. They are also known for their well-made tarps and covers. Perhaps you need a good roll-top for a grain hauler. Or maybe your needs are not commercial. Canora weaving also does custom covers for boats, golf carts and snowmobiles, awnings for RVs, inner tubes, hot tub covers and so much more. Basically, if it needs to be covered then they will measure it, make a pattern, and in no time you will have a tarp that will last for years. “If you are having the problem of finding something that fits, it’s no problem for Canora Weaving and Manufacturing. Even if you can find it, please ask us first. We can provide you with a price that I guarantee will be very competitive compared to the inflated cost that usually comes from buying from the big manufacturers.” But what if your problem is a hole or tears in your trailer tarp? No problem, Canora Weaving and Manufacturing also does repairs. They know that lost time is lost money for custom haulers, so their facility in Canora allows trucks to pull right into the yard so they can do the repairs for you on the fly. Give them a couple of hours and you will be on your way again. Repair work is not limited to trailer tarps though, as they can do any kind of cover. So don’t worry if you have a problem, whether it’s a repair or the need for a custom job. Just go see the team at Canora Weaving and Manufacturing and they will find the perfect fit. “
ore than just tires,” is the motto OK Tire Melville has adopted to let their customers know they don’t just offer tires; they also provide a variety of mechanical maintenance services. At OK Tire you can get everything from oil changes to heavy-duty repairs on all makes and models of vehicles. In March of 2011, OK Tire Melvilleopened its doors, realizing Melville and the surrounding communities could readily use another tire shop in the small city. With a few renovations, owner, Robert Mitrenga, transformed what was once a seed plant into a tire shop.
With the opening of OK Tire Melville came manager, Paul Molnar. With over 30 years in the tire business, Molnar brought with him a vast knowledge of a wide range of tires, from car and light truck to commercial and agricultural tires, as well as knowledge on a large number of agricultural parts. Larry Kienas joined the team as service advisor/front counter sales and has brought with him many customers. Kim Crebo fills the position of bookkeeper, along with helping out with front counter duties. “I never realized how much time and commitment it is running a business, but watching our customer base grow has proven that we made the right decision to open the shop,” says Crebo.
They attribute much of their success to the hard work of their mechanic, Mark Yastrub, whose expertise in the heavy truck industry has played a major role in the growth of the business. Bob Bavalis is Yastrub’s right hand man, helping out with everything from truck and trailer safeties to all aspects of heavy duty and light duty mechanics. Jordan Ivey works alongside the mechanical team performing oil changes, front end work and wheel alignments. On the tire side is Chad Campbell, Calvin Rathgeber and Nevin Armbruster. “Changing tires is a tough job, I don’t think the average person realizes just how much work is involved, especially

when you get into the agricultural and commercial truck tires,” states Crebo. “I give our tire guys a lot of credit for their hard work.” In September of 2014, Mitrenga had the opportunity to lease the OK Tire shop and moved the business to its present location, just two blocks away. At 19,000 sq. ft. the new shop is bigger and better, laid out for both the mechanical and tire service, allowing staff to better serve a growing clientele. OK Tire has teamed up with Terry Safruik of Melville Auto Glass to provide customers with on-site windshield repair and replacement on all makes and models of vehicles, from cars to heavy trucks. Safruik brings with him over 40 years experience in the auto body industry and is SGI accredited in windshield repair and replacement.

ReStore: Yorkton’s Gift to Families In Need Creating opportunities in the community By Rebecca Henderson Photos Carol’s Photography

ith Yorkton’s new consumer value retail outlet ReStore, customers may want to act fast when it comes to their shopping. “Once we post the product to Twitter or Facebook, it’s often sold right away,” says store manager, Merv Catchuk. ReStore accepts and resells donated furniture, appliances, flooring and construction materials with proceeds going to Habitat For Humanity (HFH) — a charitable, faith-based organization that builds affordable housing for families in need. Opening this past July, ReStore was a project five years in the making by
board members George Plews, Louise Belanger, John Denysek and Tom Seeley. Plews, who moved from Manitoba eight years ago, was instrumental in realizing Yorkton had the potential to support an HFH initiative. “It was Tom Seeley and I who talked about how we could get this thing off the ground, because Yorkton is probably one of the smallest communities to have a ReStore,” he says. Working with HFH Regina and The Saskatchewan Abilities Council in Yorkton, the board members wrote a compelling business plan and took out a loan from the city of Yorkton to create ReStore. “When we were finally approved, HFH Regina and HFH Canada each sent a semi-load of material to help us get
started,” says Plews. “We also received a semi-load of windows from All Weather Windows and Doors, a tremendous supporter of Habitat ReStores.” ReStore has a unique partnership with HFH, Saskatchewan Abilities Council, Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth, Sunrise Health Region and the City of Yorkton. “Each business has a unique role they play within the organization,” says Catchuk. “Even local businesses like lumberyards, construction and homebuilders donate to ReStore and play an active role in its success.” Many of the large national retail lumberyards donate product to ReStore as well. “They send us new surplus ABOVE Merv Cathchuk, manager

products,” says Catchuk. “We sell it at a discounted price to consumers — and all the while, they’re supporting Habitat For Humanity in the process. It’s a win, win, win situation.” The ReStore stock is always in exceptional condition and Catchuk says they don’t accept merchandise that is broken or not in fully working order. “It’s good quality merchandise and priced at reasonable market value,” he says. Catchuk sees ReStore growing within the next three years and says a location

THE LAMBORGHINI
The World’s Most Expensive Vehicle
VENENO By Trina Annand

ver since the invention of motorized vehicles, the focus has been on making them faster and better. Exploring the limits of technological advancement has been a special focus for the teams at Lamborghini. Since its launch in Bologna, Italy in 1963, Lamborghini has established a name for itself as the ultimate in luxury and speed. The newest line features the 2014 Veneno. It’s a startling achievement that already has a loyal fan base and a waiting list that would make any car lover cry. The 2014 Veneno is a 12-cylinder masterpiece. With a 750-horsepower

engine, it would give the bat mobile a run for its money. This beauty can go from zero to 60 in a mere 2.8 seconds, with a maximum speed of 355.7 km per hour. It does come at a cost, though, ringing in with a price tag of $4.5 million. A drop in the bucket for true car connoisseurs, the wait list is courtesy of a limited yearly release of nine cars. This allows engineers and mechanics to focus on every inch of this dream machine, ensuring the highest possible quality. When the car was created in 2013, there were a mere three cars released for sale. All were sold before they were even produced.
Interior finishes for the Veneno feature race seating, created with the finest leathers and carbon-fibre panels that mimic the sleek exterior look of the vehicle. With carbon-fibre components, the Veneno has achieved a superior rank among lightweight vehicles. Creating a car that is as beautiful under the hood as it is on the outside is the company’s guiding principle. The Veneno was a jewel in Lamborghini’s crown for their 50th anniversary. Their tagline for the special event, “A century of innovation in half the time,” is a statement that rings true when you look at the company’s success.

The Art of Homesteading Enriches Lives
I
t doesn’t matter if you live in a rural area or in the suburbs you can still participate in the modern homesteading movement. Composting, cooking from scratch, preserving, hanging clothes to dry and using alternative energy sources are just some examples of things you can do to homestead. “You don’t have to move to a farm and buy a cow to be a homesteader. Anyone can homestead,” says Cindy Patterson of Nanny Goat Acres. But why do it? The answer to this question is different for everyone.
66
FineLifestyles
Parkland Saskatchewan
The Pattersons began their homesteading journey when they moved to the family farm. Because their son has very bad eczema and reacted to cow’s milk, they had been buying goat’s milk in the stores, but it was expensive and hard to find. After some discussion Cindy and her husband decided to buy a couple of goats in order to have their own milk supply.
and raising goats,” says Cindy. During all of this research Cindy stumbled on piles of other information about homesteading. At first, images of Little House on the Prairie flooded her mind and she thought, “No, thank you!” But, as she learned more, she warmed to the idea and realized it sounded like something she wanted to do.
“I did a lot of research. I attended a goat conference — yes, I said a goat conference! — and scoured the Internet for any information I could find on milking
The Pattersons jumped headfirst into the modern homesteading movement and haven’t looked back. They now have five dairy goats that provide a personal
milk supply — they even make their own cheese. They have butchered over 100 chickens that they raised from chicks. Hens provide them with fresh eggs and their garden produces enough vegetables for a canned and frozen winter supply. Cindy line-dries her clothes and uses a washboard and homemade laundry soap to scrub out the stains. She bakes bread and makes as much food from scratch as possible. “Last spring we tapped our maple trees and made syrup, which was delicious,” says Cindy. This Christmas, they have decided to make most of their gifts. At first, the kids were not thrilled about this, but after looking around they got some ideas and can’t wait to start creating. “Since moving to the farm we have become closer as a family,” says Cindy.
They don’t watch as much TV and the computer is no longer in the living room being fought over. The kids spend more time outside and nowadays they fight over who gets to check for eggs or feed the baby goat. “For me, there is something very rewarding about watching your family eating food you produced,” Cindy adds. After being approached by a few people wanting to know more about how they can get started with homesteading, the Pattersons have started to offer workshops and school programs. If you are interested in learning more, the Pattersons are ready to share a wealth of knowledge. Nanny Goat Acres cindypatt@sasktel.net /nannygoatacres

A Contractor at the Heart of
GREEN SOLUTIONS
D
C-10 Systems is a contractor serving southern Saskatchewan with a very unique scope of work... going above and beyond what you would traditionally expect from an electrical company. Although the company now offers full residential, commercial and agricultural electrical services, when it first began, the basic idea was, “If we are going to start an electrical company that ultimately only tackles the same work every other company does, then why bother? says owner, Nathan Bazeley.
68
FineLifestyles
Parkland Saskatchewan
Founded in early 2014, the company set out to blend their knowledge of the electrical profession with their other passions including control and automation systems, audio, renewable energy and other specialized areas. One of the company owners, Byron Chambers, had worked in the pro audio/production industry for years prior to getting involved in the electrical trade. It was a natural move to expand and integrate his knowledge and experience in audio, video and lighting into the more advanced automation, control and electrical systems he now designs and installs with the company.
AUTOMATION DC-10 Systems is certified by Key Digital as installers and programmers for an automation and A/V system called Compass Control. The great thing about the Compass Control system is it’s designed to seamlessly integrate with other major control and automation manufacturers. That way, you can pick and choose your favourite aspects of other systems, eliminate things you dislike about them and ultimately get the best of three different systems, all centrally controlled from the Compass Control App for iOS devices. RENEWABLE ENERGY, ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SOLAR SYSTEMS Aside from their automation division, DC10 Systems has put several projects under their belt focusing on energy efficiency. They are encouraging their clients to swap their lighting from the old energyhog lighting like mercury-vapour, HPS and incandescent, to newer technologies such as T5 or LED. Not only do they draw
a fraction of the power, but also provide a higher quality light. As an added bonus, SaskPower currently offers a rebate for commercial customers who wish to install energy efficient lighting. DC-10 Systems’ focus on energy efficiency and “green” solutions has led to a partnership with Saskatchewanbased renewable energy experts Sound Solar Systems Ltd. Together they design and install solar panel arrays and other environmentally friendly power solutions. DC-10 feels renewable energy such as solar arrays, mixed with efficient lighting solutions is a win-win investment. It reduces your monthly power expenses significantly, as well as your carbon footprint. Everyone is growing more and more concerned with pollution and carbon emissions these days, and DC-10 Systems is doing what they can to blend their professional goals with environmentally friendly solutions. ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING DC-10 Systems got their start installing electric vehicle charging stations
across the province when they were approached to install a high-power charger for a customer who purchased a Tesla Motors vehicle. From there, they found themselves installing a charger in Davidson, Sask. specifically to accommodate the electric car that was travelling across the country with David Suzuki on his recent coast-to-coast Blue Dot Tour. The ultimate goal is to have an entire network of charging stations in all urban and rural areas of the province (and eventually all of Canada), which will make the idea of purchasing electric vehicles more plausible for the average consumer. DC-10 Systems likes to get to know their customers and find out what they really require with their projects. They take pride in the work they do and have a true passion for the areas of work they are involved in.

tuna, Sask. gave Jim Sturgess a second chance at doing what he does best, and also what he truly enjoys. He drove into Ituna from Ontario on a warm July day and decided this was the place to start again. He began working at a local shop and helping his son, Dustin, renovate his log home before deciding it was time to start his plumbing and heating shop. The town administration and local businesses helped Sturgess get up and running. “This is a smaller version of my plumbing and heating shop I owned in Ontario. I want something to leave my children, Dustin and Chantel, and my grandchildren, Reese and Jaze,” says Sturgess. With the winter season approaching, the calls to thaw pipes and get furnaces running will be keeping Sturgess busy. “It’s a crazy time of year, but I build my reputation on excellent customer service. In a small town, I thrive to build a business based on local customers,” says Sturgess who believes in building his business on the principles of honest and efficient service. At the moment, Sturgess is the sole employee but as the business grows he plans to hire locals.
and ice. Any major service work should always be done by a licensed technician. A qualified technician like Sturgess will do an efficiency test and check of all electrical components and find any weak points. When there are weak spots, the furnace has to work all that much harder, especially in really cold weather, and there are more likely to be breakdowns, so the weak point should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Pipes are also at risk as the cold weather approaches. “Many times when people do renovations, they hide the pipes in an outside wall or underneath the floors where they do not have the natural heat from the house to keep them warm enough. Many of our calls are due to
this,” says Sturgess. If a pipe freezes it should be thawed with a hair dryer or micro-furnace, not a volatile fuel such as propane or butane. Wrapping the pipe in heat tape or insulated tape may also prevent freezing. Sturgess will get the job done efficiently, but more importantly, he’ll do it effectively. “I am working hard to gain people’s trust, especially in this service trade where we are at the customers’ beck and call,” Sturgess adds. Sturgess Plumbing and Heating Ituna, SK 306.552.4388 prestonjames@outlook.com
With cold weather upon us, Sturgess advises that furnaces be cleaned and serviced at least once a year, and the filters be changed on a monthly basis by the homeowner. Quite often a clogged filter is the cause of the furnace quitting. Air vents should also be kept clear, and if you have a high efficiency furnace make sure the outside vent is clear of snow

Capturing Memories at Home and Afar Photos and Writing By Becky Bulych
M
emories By Becky Bulych is a photography business located in the beautiful little town of Ituna, SK. The business began in the summer of 2011 and has been servicing Ituna, as well as a large part of southern Saskatchewan. “I travel for work, I always enjoy seeing new places and meeting new people,” says Bulych. There are so many amazing and fun places to take photos, you never get bored, that’s for sure!” Thinking back on how her business began, Bulych recalls she loved photos from a very young age. “I remember when I got my first camera. I don’t even know what it was called but it was small and had a place on top where you would put the flash bulbs. I walked around my grandma’s house taking pictures of anything and everyone!” Many years later Bulych finally bought her first DSLR camera and tackled the learning curve. For practice, she began with sunset and landscape photos, she quickly moved on to portrait photography, taking photos using her children as models. “It got to be quite sad actually — I would bring out the camera and they would almost run and hide,” she laughs. “All that practice paid off in the end.” Today, Bulych specializes in many different kinds of portrait photography. You can find her photographing dance and hockey organizations, school photos, families, babies, graduations, anniversaries and even pets. In the future, she hopes to spend some more time on landscapes. Regardless of what type of photos she’s taking, her hope is that she can provide a fun and friendly environment for everyone. Bulych takes pride in providing fast efficient service and a good quality product. “I’m thankful to all the clients I currently have and all the new ones to come. It is truly my pleasure to serve you. I look forward to what’s to come in the new year.” “Merry Christmas and all the best in the new year!” Memories By Becky Bulych 520 1st Ave NE Ituna, SK 306.795.7379 Chad and Becky Bulych FineLifestyles

Scrapeze wishes you and yours a wonderful holiday season! Scrapeze is a small family-run business specializing in scrap metal recycling, owned and operated by Chad and Becky Bulych of Ituna, SK. Chad grew up learning the ins and outs of this business from his Dad and Grandfather who owned, and to this day, still run one of the longest running businesses in Ituna. What started as a construction business soon became a successful auto wrecking and recycling business. Chad spent countless hours “fixing” with his grandfather and working out on the road with his Dad. From the age of 15 he worked with the family business on and off for about 25 years. In 2011, Chad acquired some equipment and headed out on his own business venture, carrying on in his Dad’s footsteps. Chad loves running big equipment and spends most his days ripping combines and crushing cars. There are few days that he can’t be found in some farmer’s backfield crushing up old equipment and preparing it for recycling. Always happy to meet new people, Chad would be pleased to help you clean up any metal you might be looking to sell. Feel free to give him a call for estimates at 306.795.7044.
