We cannot emphasize enough how higher quality can bring about better comfort, durability and vision, making each day less stressful and more enjoyable. regarded in the eyewear industry, not just designers who make a plethora of other goods and have their name stamped on frames. These small, independent brands are focused on quality and design, keeping eyewear fashion moving forward, even if it is influenced from the past. We appreciate and enjoy the relationships that we have built over the years, where many patients become really good friends. It is nice to hear, “You always pick the right pair for me!” Whether it is your first time with us, or you are a frequent customer, we enjoy challenging your comfort zone and attempting to push you a bit beyond it. Eyewear is our passion, and we take it very seriously. We want to share the incredible world of eyewear that exists beyond the licensed brands, two-forone and online discounters. Let us pick the right pair for you! FLR Ryan Horne, Licensed Optician

What’sInside
N
etworking is an important activity when it comes to marketing and building a business. It can produce potential clients, it can also be a great way to meet other like-minded people, and business resources. While women have natural tendencies to connect with each other, without a plan aligned for business, networking can be a dead end. Chances are you have been to a social gathering that was a great platform for networking. You met lots of fabulous people, shared in delightful conversation, and exchanged several business cards, maybe even offered to do coffee one day soon. You left feeling wonderful, feeling like you made some connections with people and have some hot leads. A couple days pass by with no phone calls, no emails. A week goes by, still nothing. The enthusiastic high is gone, and so is your hope.

The real networking starts after the exchange of business cards. Have you ever heard the phrase, the magic is in the follow up? Whether you’re in sales, business building mode, or recruiting high potentials, the rubber hits the road when you take that business card and initiate communication. Leaders initiate. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. The stage where the business cards were exchanged was simply an introduction; chances are there wasn’t time or space to make a meaningful or fruitful connection. Take the next step in building rapport by sending an email or a hand-written note. My personal preference is a hand-written note – it’s personal and it stands out from the flood of daily emails people get. But an email will work as well because it shows thoughtfulness. If you promised one of those network introductions a coffee meeting, then don’t wait for them to initiate, call that person to set up a date and time. When you finally meet face to face without the constant interruptions or distractions of the original function then be prepared to get to know the other person. Make a point of learning about what matters most to them. Not sure what to say or ask? Here’s a great formula to help you: FORM. Ask questions about the other person’s Family, their Occupation, what they enjoy for Recreation, and their Market (who is their ideal client or referral). These questions demonstrate genuine interest in the other person, and no matter what you’re selling or looking for chances are good that you’ll uncover the information you are seeking to determine a fit or not. SHOPPING FOR YOUR
SHAPE BY DEAN RENWICK
E
veryone loves shopping, but when it comes to actually wearing the clothes you buy, that might be another story altogether. All too often, the clothes that you thought looked good in the store end up hanging in the closet untouched. The best way to prevent this is to know your body shape, and what looks best on you.
The best way to get to know your figure is to stand in front of a mirror and take note of what you see. Are your shoulders as wide, not as wide, or wider than your hips? Is your bust small, medium or full? Look at your waist - is it smaller or the same size as your hips? Are your hips, upper thighs and bottom full and round, or flat and wide? Are your legs slim or shapely? There are four basic figure types: A
pear shape, smaller at the top and wider and flatter at the bottom.
X
hour glass figure which is smaller at the waist.
V
inverted pear shape.
H
rectangular shape.
When shopping for clothes, your goal is to create the longest looking line on your body. You can do this by using shapes and proportions that will visually balance your upper body with your lower body. Be sure to try everything on in-store to avoid having that closet full of clothes that are still donning their price tags.
Style Tips for “A” Figure A’s, be sure to keep your top fitted or tailored to define the shape of your torso. Because you are narrow at the top, you will want to draw the eye upward by adding visual volume to your shoulders and upper torso. Try blouses and tops with epaulettes or pockets (with or without flaps). Also, make it a point to accessorize with a scarf at the neck or chunky necklaces. For this body type, it’s best to wear a straight pant with flat front and straight full leg that falls from the widest part of your bottom. This will take ten pounds off of you instantly. Avoid pleats like the plague!
12
FineLifestyles

When addressing your bottom half, make sure to avoid any smaller patch pockets that are set high on the middle of your butt. Stay away from elaborate stitching, cargo pants or any other ‘bells and whistles’ in the front hip or thigh area. By all means, keep away from any sort of tapered leg, or you’ll end up looking like an ice cream cone. Skirts should be more A-line in structure to draw the eye upward to your tiny waist; they can be stiff or floaty. A - Pear
X - Hour Glass
Style Tips for “X” Figure With an average to full bust, small to average waist, curvy hips and a full round bottom, you will want to make your waist the focal point. Wide or skinny belts work great for this. Avoid fabric that adds bulk, like your husband’s cable knit sweater. Tent-style dresses tend to make you look bigger than you are unless you belt them.
V - Inverted Pear
14
FineLifestyles
REGINA
H - Rectangle
Style Tips for “V” Figure Because you are broader at the shoulders than the hips with a medium to full bust and often flat bottom, you are what is also known as an inverted pear. If your bust and torso are full or if you have a short waist, you will want to create a longer looking middle. Think of what a man’s tie does visually - it creates what I call a ‘landing strip’ in the middle of the torso, and tricks the eye into seeing long, tall and sleek. You can achieve the same effect by wearing a jacket or sweater open to reveal a strip of colour underneath. This can also be done by wearing a long necklace with several strands of chains, pearls or whatever. You lucky girl! Your narrow hips allow you to choose from all kinds of trends, patterns and details. When choosing skirts, be sure to pick from tapered to fuller cuts. This will depend on the length and width of your
torso and the fullness of your bust. V’s should avoid any kind of detail that will exaggerate the shoulders such as epaulettes, large pockets, shoulder pads or gathered sleeves; that is unless you are specifically trying to achieve the Roughrider linebacker look!
Style Tips for “H” Figure A typical H figure features a full neck, broad shoulders, average to full bust, full torso, and undefined full waist (often short) with a flat and wide bottom. Your best bet is to top with body skimming, straight shapes to elongate the look of your upper torso. Look for jackets that are fitted with darts and princess seams and feature visual details. Your pants should be straight, and should sit either at your natural waist or an inch or two below. No pleats; wear nothing that is elastic unless it’s only at the back.
Choose from a variety of flowy tops, but then go with a narrow bottom like a pegged-style skirt. You can create length for your neck by wearing V-necks, scoop necks, or even square neck tops. Avoid wide waistbands with gathered fullness or elastic gathered waists. Also stay away from oversized t-shirts and full shirts with dropped shoulder seams.
A Few More Hints Clothes are no longer made with ample seam allowance; they are virtually impossible to let out. When shopping for clothes, buy to fit the biggest part of your body, and tailor down to fit the rest of you. Remember, your tailor is your best friend, and keep him on speed-dial. Watch the trends. Although it may be tempting to run out and buy the latest hot look, not all trends suit all body types. For example, not every body type and every
age should wear a mini skirt. The classics, mixed with one trendy item at a time, are always the best way to go. Keeping your accessories trendy is a very inexpensive and easy way to update your wardrobe. When looking at hem lengths, choose what suits you best. My rule of thumb is that your hem should be at the top of your calf, right below the knee. Hemming in the middle of the calf will just make your legs look like a pair of stove pipes.
Final Thoughts If you are having a hard time deciding what shape you are and what clothes to wear, invest in a stylist, who can help you determine your body type, and pick out the most flattering clothes for you. It is money well invested - no matter what your shape, you can look great. If you know how to dress for your figure type, you will knock ‘em dead wherever you go. FLR

It all began in April 2012 when, because of limited access to products both locally and in magazines, and necessary trips to the United States to access products, Cindy decided her to open her own store in Regina. She wants her customers to be inspired to create their
own ideas without limiting the tools and products. Her shop carries a variety of products and machines for crafters and businesses such as sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking and cloth dying. She also carries a 10-needle embroidery machine you can purchase to start your own business. A certified on-site technician will do warranty work on Brother, Bernina and Handi-Quilter machines; Cindy herself is also able to do general service on any other machines.
The spacious 3,600 sq. ft. store features wide aisles on one level, so customers in wheelchairs can access every part of the store. Cindy has even thought about her shoppers’ comfort by featuring a fireplace with comfortable chairs for people to sit and read, browse the internet for patterns, or learn about their new creations. She also has televisions and children’s chairs so they can watch DVDs. The televisions are always tuned into the Rider games, so her customers won’t miss a moment of the action. This store is bright, refreshing, colourful and modern, with a traditional twist. One of the store’s features is the StepSister Clearance Centre, where the evil step-sisters have slashed prices on clearance items. “I also have the Fairy God Mother Wish List, a special-order program for customers wanting products not found in the store,” laughs Cindy. Cindy and her staff offer a wide range of classes for anyone wanting to expand their creative interests. She recently held a week-long summer camp for kids, and will continue classes in the fall for 10 to 16 year-olds. The store also features a party/ work room for children to host their own tie-dye birthday parties. Cindy and some of her staff members have adult education certificates from the University of Regina, and teach a variety of classes for adults. Individual classes are available for those customers wanting to learn a specific skill or machine. SCHOOL SUPPORT FOR EVERY LEARNING NEED PHOTOS ANDREW SAMMONS

ll parents want their kids to do well in school. For some students, learning is a struggle and good grades don’t come easily; for others, school is not challenging enough.
“It doesn’t matter if the school issue is homework-related, difficulty paying attention in class, disorganization, or boredom, extra help can help kids get on track academically, or help challenge students and help reduce school stress,” says Janet Klassen of Oxford Learning Regina. Oxford Learning programs for students, from pre-school right through to University preparation, are customized to the student’s unique learning needs, so each student gets exactly the right kind of support needed to succeed in school. To develop strong reading skills before grade one, Oxford Learning offers an academic preschool, Little Readers, for three-to-six-year olds. This half-day program helps children develop strong foundations in reading, writing, and math, while emphasizing
school readiness skills. Little Readers is offered weekday mornings, afternoons, or evenings and also Saturday mornings.

professionals: massage therapists, Melissa Mann and Shannon Forrester. Since 2008 they have been a different kind of salon offering exclusive product, ultra-quick service, and the best spa and massage care in Saskatchewan. Mission accomplished, and then some. “We both come from a spa background, and I have experience in the service and public relations industries. We wanted to offer very fast luxury services the way salons in bigger cities like Toronto or New York City do,” Forrester says. “CoCo Nail Lounge offers quick service and spalike treatment at the same time without compromising quality.”
Other amenities include serving their very own brands of specialty teas, putting out healthy snacks for their customers to munch on, their own cappuccino bar and more. Suppose your best friend is a brilliant hostess. She owns a spa and beauty centre, and you’re her very favourite client. She wants you to come over with all your friends to get pampered, watch movies and have fun. That’s what it’s like at CoCo Nail Lounge. “When Melissa and I developed CoCo, we wanted to create a place where people can come with their friends,” says Forrester. “Our pedicure lounge seats
five on big comfy couches. The manicure bar has seating for four. The way the space is designed, you can host a party.” For a bride-to-be and her friends, family and attendants, no other beauty centre compares to CoCo Nail Lounge. Some brides can book the entire spa and spend four or five hours treating their family and friends to a full spa experience. “Our customers are also welcome to bring in food, and some brides have even had caterers come in to feed their wedding party,” explains Forrester. Some people even create party themes and bring in movies and music to play on the lounge’s big screen TV and entertainment system. CoCo Nail Lounge can accommodate large or small groups. One bride booked the salon for herself and 20 attendants. Over the course of several fun-filled hours, the bride and her entourage rotated through an assortment of treatments while visiting, laughing and having a memorable day. CoCo Nail Lounge likes to get brides off on the right foot early. Forrester recommends starting a beauty regime weeks, even months before the big day. “We recommend the bride coming in a couple of months before to start off with eyebrow waxing and shaping, and if they are considering a hot honeymoon, bikini waxing is a must,” says Mann. CoCo Nail Lounge is one of only two companies in Canada that uses Mineralogie, a mineral-based makeup that gives extraordinary coverage even on problem skin. Even though it has a barely-there feel it provides excellent long-lasting coverage (a wedding day must), and looks natural on every skin type. “It’s special because it has an SPF of 26, the highest in the industry. That’s very good because it protects the skin from damage from the sun,” says Forrester. “And because Mineralogie is a loose mineral, it doesn’t clog pores. If you have acne, the makeup actually treats it, and over time, minimizes it.” “We want our brides to feel stress-free, and that we will take good care of them. Booking a massage the day before or, even the day of, is also recommended,” Mann says. CoCo Nail Lounge is located at 3424 Hill Avenue in Regina. Telephone: (306) 757-COCO (2626); Fax: (306) 757-2627. Hours of business are Tuesday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. FLR

I wanted to hang out with family and friends,” explains Bev. Turning their backs on superstition, the adventurous couple had their wedding on Friday the thirteenth. The day after the wedding, friends and family stayed to spend time on the beach, giving the new couple a
chance to see everyone who had made an effort to travel to the wedding. After researching venues, the two settled on having their wedding at Truly Unique Country Weddings, just outside of Regina, and couldn’t be happier. “I didn’t want a real button-down ceremony,” explains Bev. Instead of a church or hotel, the couple said their vows under the sun nestled between trees, arches, bridges, and set on immaculately manicured grounds.
Kerry Keller, the owner and operator, was accommodating and helpful. “He was great,” effuses Bev, “I would recommend the grounds to anyone.” “There were so many people that helped make our day special,” says Bev. Alongside Kerry, Darla Pawlowki at Ultimate Eventz provided amazing support as the wedding planner, helping Bev and Brian with all the details. Bev had her dress designed and made by Lena Yee Wu, a local lady known
for her dressmaking talent. Tien, owner and stylist at Lasting Impressions, did Bev’s elegant hair, and Tasha of Tasha’s Day Spa took care of the makeup. “I truly felt beautiful,” says Bev. “I thought I would be really nervous, but I woke up feeling amazing. Everything fell in line.” Bev and Brian began their married life together with a beautiful wedding day. “I walked over a nice little bridge with the sound of gravel at my heels.”
Her sister-in-law played a Beatles song on the piano while the birds sang, and Bev walked down the aisle. Right before her picturesque walk down the aisle, Bev shared some words with her father. That was the only time she cried. “Brian and I both have really great parents.” After the ceremony, the wedding party went for pictures done by Donna McIntosh photography. About an hour into the photo shoot, Bev decided the

process was finished. “I wanted to go and be with all my family and friends,” says Bev genuinely. While the dress code was casual, the day had an elegant feel, aided by the bartenders in black tie attire. White chairs, a white tent, and bright red rose petals were the perfect accents to nature’s backdrop. When Bev and Brian walked into the tent, guests spontaneously started throwing rose petals, adding to the excitement. Canadian championship barbequer and owner of Prairie Spice and BBQ, Rob Reinhart, made a gourmet barbequed meal guests could smell as they arrived on the grounds. After the ceremony, a band played to a busy dance floor, where some of the 200 guests took advantage of the live music by Ralph Ell and the Hardcore Troubadours. After the

speeches, fireworks lit up the sky, and two bonfire pits were prepared for the midnight lunch—cook your own hot dogs. “People ended up just having a blast, and so did I,” says Bev. People could even end their night camping on the grounds, which added a safety factor as well as fun. Bev and Brian stayed at the Bed and Breakfast on the grounds. When Brian gave his thank-you speech, Bev was truly moved. Many years ago, Brian had an aneurysm and Bev was there. He thanked her for saving his life. To Bev, this is one of her most powerful memories of the day, an intimate moment between her and Brian, shared with all their loved ones. The Tuesday after their wedding, the two went for a truly Canadian honeymoon. “We drove to Calgary and went to see Neil Diamond, then to the Rider game
on Thursday,” says Bev. They stayed at a lovely place on the Bow River, ate well, and drank fine wine. It was a perfect end to a gorgeous wedding day. Everything was perfect, I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” says Bev happily. Their wedding day has become a truly special memory. They’re now ready to make some more memories. At 47 and 52, the couple had already established a home and filled it with the necessities. So, as gifts, some guests gave travel vouchers or the use of vacation houses. In December the newlyweds are going to Hawaii to make use of a cousin’s vacation house, and are looking to make use of another friend’s gift by travelling to Montana. “We just love to make memories.” FLR

ELEGANT, BEAUTIFUL, FASHION By Lisa schick
T
he wedding day is one of the most important days in a woman’s life. She wants everything to be perfect: the flowers, the food, the decorations, and most importantly, the dress. For that day at least, the bride is the most beautiful woman in the world, and Audrey’s Bridal and Fashion helps make that dream come true. This women’s fashion boutique in Regina features a new, elegant and unique selection of fashion styles made with quality materials and at a reasonable price. Their amazing stock comes from a direct relationship with manufacturers, which allows them to work directly with the people who make the dresses. Stock comes from overseas in Hong Kong. “The fashion is usually more up-to-date. We do our very best to be ahead of the trends,” says Audrey’s owner. They carry things which may be unique and not seen before in Regina, which attracts people from outside the city to shop. That direct access to the suppliers’ designers means they can create dresses if something off the rack isn’t quite right. They can deal with different designs, and with some manufacturers’ brands, they can mix and match bodices and skirts from different dresses to create something unique, elegant and beautiful that no other bride will have. “Our customers are quite surprised that we can sometimes do that,” says the owner. Audrey’s Bridal and Fashion doesn’t deal with middle men, allowing them to sell the dresses for a more reasonable price. “We set our prices in terms of what we save, and we give that back to the customers.”

The store has also branched into bridesmaids, flower girl, graduation wear and cocktail party dresses, applying the same ideas of unique styles and affordable prices. One of their more distinctive lines is the accessories, including tiaras, headwear, veils and shrugs. The accessories also come from overseas, so many of them are handmade unique styles which may not be found anywhere else. Their staff not only provides great customer service, but also try to make the store comfortable, cozy and welcoming for shoppers. “We create a friendly atmosphere, and we treat each bride just as special as the one before her,” emphasizes the owner. Shoppers can book a time to come in and get a more one-on-one
personal experience, but the owner says drop-ins are also welcome. The entire experience at Audrey’s Bridal and Fashion is designed to help brides find the best dress possible. “It’s a oncein-a-lifetime for them, they want to look beautiful, and we want to make that happen,” the owner adds. Even the store, named for their daughter, means elegant and beautiful. The store has extended hours to give customers more flexibility and more shopping opportunities. They’re open seven days a week, and later on weekends. Check out the store or visit their website at www.audreysbridal.ca. FLR

Extensions, Extensions, Extensions Styling of human hair extensions is very similar to caring for naturallygrown hair. Styling products and tools can be safely used. Fusion hair extensions are singlestrand pieces of human hair fused to one’s own hair using a warming tool and a keratin bond. This allows for free motion of the hair. egent Park Hair Studio specializes in hair extensions. Whether you are looking for beautiful new locks of 100 per cent human hair, micro-braids, fusion, or tape-on extensions, we’ve got you covered. We can tailor your extensions to whatever length or texture you want to make your hair style “pop”. A wedding day must, or just because you want it. The sewn-on weave and micro-braid were the only extensions offered during the past 12 years at Regent Park Hair Studio. Recently, new staff members have brought in two other application methods: fusion and tape-on extensions. The sewn-on method of hair extensions is hair on a weft, sewn to a cornrow. They are unseen, creating a very natural look that will not fall out. The only way that this type of extension will come off is to cut the threads that hold it in place.

Tape-on extensions are best described as a small section of one’s own hair sandwiched between two strips of human hair tape-on extensions. This method is both flat and close to the scalp; through experience, we have found that this method is recommended for those who get irritated from other extension methods. All three of these methods last approximately two to three months with regular upkeep. Hair can be reused for up to four reapplications. The extension service is guaranteed by your stylist for 30 days after application. There is a selection of human hair to choose from in our store, or you can provide your own.

Micro-braid extensions are the only extensions which require synthetic hair because it is melted at the ends to hold the braids together. Synthetic braids are very easily cared for, with no styling products needed. Shampoo hair once a week without using conditioners, sprays or gels on most hair types. Thousands of satisfied customer photos are available for viewing in our waiting area, as well as online at our website www.regenthair.com. Free consultation is required in advance for all extensions services. We are open Monday to Saturday; call today to book your next appointment. FLR

For Wedding, Work and Play For All liFe’s MAin events By nykeA Behiel Photos CAlvin Fehr

ain Event began as a wedding and event planning service in 2009, and quickly grew to the point where it required a location. Founder and operator Krista Hauser wanted a space to meet with clients, and an opportunity to expand her business. She sought out the latest and best in ladies clothing and bridal wear, and Main Event grew into a beautiful boutique.
Creating the upscale-looking store location was a family effort. “It was really important to incorporate both the history of my family and that of Moose Jaw into the renovation. I was born and raised here, and the history of this city has a lot to offer its residents and tourists. The space was stripped down to its original 1912 state; most of the original woodwork from the upper hotel floors was salvaged, and beautiful change rooms and architectural features were created. “My husband,

Jason, is excellent at restoring old buildings, and we applied many of the same principles of preserving and restoring this space as we did with our 1912 family home. The old backdrop is gorgeous in its original form, fused with modern elegance. Polished white concrete floors create a glow and serene environment for shopping. Alongside the lovely architecture, Krista commissioned a mural by Grant McLaughlin depicting women’s fashion in the 1920’s, a booming point in Moose Jaw’s history. Main Event’s restoration was so extensive that the City of Moose Jaw recognized their efforts and awarded them a Heritage Award for the Rehabilitation of a Heritage Property. Citizens and tourists love to stop in and soak up the little bit of history that the space offers. Beyond the elegant atmosphere are the beautiful clothing lines that Main Event offers. “We are here not just to sell

women clothing, but to help educate women on building better wardrobes, and in turn build a positive self-image. I have a deep connection with many of my clients; many times I feel more like the girlfriend on the other side of the change room door applauding success and recognizing struggle, rather than just the sales consultant.” Working with bridal attire has been a dream come true for Krista. “It’s such an exciting and emotional time for everyone involved in the purchase of that once-in-a-lifetime gown; it’s a pleasure and honour to be included in such an intimate time with a bride and her family.” Krista feels that the service and atmosphere offered at Main Event creates a very special memory for their clients. “I truly strive to provide every single client with the knowledge and service that I would expect myself when making such an important purchase; I think that’s why I love my job so much and look forward to being at the store every day.”
With the great location and busy storefront, Main Event hasn’t forgotten how it all started with its wedding and event planning services. Krista admits “I need to make sure that each event is a good fit for me professionally and personally; to achieve a good work-life balance I have to be diligent to only take on what I can effectively manage”. Main Event has also experienced success with its Moose Jaw destination wedding packages, helping couples from Toronto, Vancouver and numerous places around the province to plan their weddings in Moose Jaw. “Not everyday do people get to wake up and be excited to go to work; I smile that I am one of those very fortunate people who feels passionately about what they do,” Krista says. Her mother couldn’t imagine a better fit for her daughter. “Whether she was making a dress out of her bath towel, playing in the curtains, or somehow modifying her own clothing when she was growing up, we encouraged and supported her
individual fashion tastes. We couldn’t be prouder!” Visit Main Events elegant boutique in historic downtown Moose jaw for contemporary ladies professional, casual and formal wear and sophisticated bridal and prom attire. FLR

e all know getting ready for the “big day” can be overwhelming, but also very exciting. There are so many things to do: booking the perfect place for the ceremony and reception, picking your invitations and bridal party members, and even the tiniest details of how you want your toe nails painted.
A detail that often gets left to the last minute is personal areas of concern that may dampen your special day. You should consult with a skilled and caring medical aesthetics professional well in advance of your wedding day if you have an area of concern on your face, such as acne, scarring, fine lines or wrinkles, love handles or saddle bags that make you feel less than ecstatic in your dress or swim suit for the honeymoon, or if you have stretch marks that may interfere with your confidence. Definitely get the big ticket items like your church and halls booked, but also stop and think about how you can look and feel your best on your special day. is about restoration of self-esteem. There are many services available that can help anyone feel their very best on their wedding day. Many services can be done just prior to your big day: pedicures, manicures and relaxing massages, to name a few. It is best to book an early consultation when addressing complexion areas such as acne, acne scarring, unwanted facial or body hair and wrinkles, or to tone and tighten an area of your body so your dress or tuxedo fits perfectly to your toned and tightened physique. During a free consultation, your medical aesthetics professional should be able to assess what areas of concern you have, and review in detail the many options available to best suit your goals and expectations as well as your budget. Let’s look at body contouring. Using the Spa RF from Alma Lasers at Damara Day Spa featuring Bell Medical Aesthetics, this client was able to lose a total of 11.5 inches in the thighs and buttocks region, a feat she was unable to accomplish with diet and exercise alone. CELEBRATING TWO YEARS OF HELPING REGINA FAMILIES BY SHAWNA COMMON

n September 2010, a new website was launched that has helped to revolutionize family life in Regina. A product of her own experience and frustration, Tania Korpus Moller developed OneStopKidShop.com as a comprehensive online resource for anyone with children in their lives. Drawing on her background as a social worker, and the challenges of being a stay-at-home mom to two active children, Tania Korpus Moller conceived the idea of a one-stop destination for children’s activities and resources. After years of research and hard work, OneStopKidShop.com became a reality. Check out www. OneStopKidShop.com for: • Activities such as sports and music, birthday parties, camps, childcare, resources and more • Convenient 24/7 access to comprehensive information, target ages, pricing and schedules • Registration information • A regular newsletter to keep you up-to-date
with direct access to Regina families has proven to be a winning combination at a price well below the cost of traditional media.
What Our Clients Are Saying Your site has helped to fill my daycare again. I can’t begin to thank you enough for this huge service you have provided. Your site is awesome. Your website is exactly what I have been searching for the past three years, since my daughter was born. I am definitely going to share it with several parents I know in Regina. Love it, thank you. Like you, I spent hours searching for summer camps, birthday party ideas and all that parents do when school is out and the kids need something to do. I happened upon your webpage while searching for summer camps. Thank you! I believe that the exposure I get through OneStopKidShop.com is contributing to my strong enrollments this semester and last semester. FLR

WINNING AGAINST CANCER: SUPPORT, RESOURCES AND HOPE BY SHAWNA COMMON
W
e all know someone who has been affected by at least one of the 200 forms of cancer. This insidious disease affects us all in some way, by either developing it or knowing someone who has gone through their own cancer journey. There are many support services available for patients and caregivers, as well as numerous volunteers who tirelessly help others affected by cancer. The Canadian C a n c e r Society does not receive a list of people who have been

diagnosed with cancer; they can only help those who contact them for information and support. The Canadian Cancer Society offers more than prevention and early detection information, which is vital for saving lives; they also offer services to help those experiencing cancer. Peer support is provided to those diagnosed with cancer, as well as caregivers of those involved in their cancer battle. Because the Canadian Cancer Society is a national organization, they are able to match patients with volunteers who have gone through a similar journey. Carol Cundall in Estevan has been a peer support volunteer for more than two years, and helps many people every day. She was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in December 2005. Stage four is considered
terminal, but she has not only survived, she has thrived by leading a happy, healthy lifestyle while helping others. “When I was going through this, I wanted to talk to someone who had also gone through a similar fight, who had been diagnosed with stage four and survived, and I had many questions. Talking to health professionals is helpful, but sometimes you just need to talk to someone who`s been there,” explains Carol. The Peer Support Program provides the volunteer with the phone number and diagnosis information of a client requiring support. If the volunteer determines she can assist the client, she initiates the call. “They always want to know if I’m okay. That’s always their first question,” says Carol. “They sometimes just want to talk,
they may have questions about surgery or chemotherapy, and some want to discuss their fears. People don’t understand that the patient is also trying to stay strong for their family and friends, and don’t want to add to the burden they are already facing by saying they’re scared. Family and friends usually want to stay positive, and they can’t understand the variety of fears associated with this disease unless they have experienced it firsthand. I am able to listen to my clients and allow them to vent. I don’t give medical advice, but I can tell my clients what’s happening in other parts of the country. For example, I hear about different things happening from Newfoundland to British Columbia.” ¨I am also able to help people by providing helpful suggestions. `Chemo brain` is a real condition, which refers to the memory and concentration problems experienced by those receiving chemotherapy. I always tell my clients to write down questions before they visit their oncologist, and it’s always a good idea to take someone with you. Patients receive a lot of information at once, and it’s hard to remember everything. Patients should also take a notebook with them to write down the information the doctor is telling them so they can refer to it later. People are usually in shock when they receive a cancer diagnosis, particularly if it’s a stage four. Most people don’t really hear anything after that, so that’s why taking notes and having someone with you is so important. I also tell my clients
to write down questions for me, so they can ask me when I call them. Support is provided over the phone at the appointed time, but my clients are also able to contact me through the Canadian Cancer Society if they need to.¨ ¨The Canadian Cancer Society provides lots of support for its peer support volunteers with training, meetings and calls to see how I’m doing. My own recovery has been boosted by helping others, because of the positive feelings, and also the encouragement to maintain a healthy lifestyle. My clients want to know if I’m eating healthy, exercising, avoiding risks and so on. I couldn’t be telling others to make healthy life decisions if I wasn’t doing it myself. I also make healthy life choices to keep myself from having a relapse. I look after myself so I can help others, and be there for my family.”
“When I was going through this, I wanted to talk to someone who had also gone through a similar fight... sometimes you just need to talk to someone who`s been there”
¨The best advice I can give anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer is to respect the fear, acknowledge how you feel, and remember that you’re still alive. Many people become so good at dying, they forget that they’re still alive. People should also have some sort of peer support, so contacting the Canadian Cancer Society can significantly help you.” Information is readily available for those with questions by calling the Canadian Cancer Society’s information line at 1-888-939-3333 during office hours, or visit www.cancer.ca/sk for 24-hour resources. Information specialists provide information about all types of cancer, clinical trials, support services, prevention, early detection, cancer statistics, ways to cope with cancer, treatments and their side effects, complementary and alternative therapies, and how to find help in your local community; these specialists are health professionals who are supportive and knowledgeable about cancer. Volunteer drivers are another helping arm of the Canadian Cancer Society. People volunteer to drive patients to oncology appointments, chemotherapy, radiation and follow-up appointments. Cancer centres are located in Regina and Saskatoon, so drivers often pick people up from the bus depot and drive them to their accommodations and appointments while they’re in either city.

The Saskatchewan Division of the Canadian Cancer Society also provides financial assistance; they will pay for accommodation and travel expenses for those having to travel to Regina or Saskatoon for treatment, as well as Saskatchewan patients and caregivers having to travel outside of Saskatchewan. Patients are usually unable to return home immediately following treatment, so the organization pays for accommodation during the treatmentrecovery stage. more complex assistance such as access to drugs, employment insurance and disability claims, and assistance with out-of-province treatment.

While the Canadian Cancer Society promotes prevention and early detection, they also help people take an active role. The Reminder For Life program sends you a note every year with what you need to discuss with your doctor based on your age and gender. Visit www.ReminderForLife.ca to receive annual information to better prepare you to discuss early detection and ways of reducing your risk of cancer.
All of these services cost a significant amount of money, and the Canadian Cancer Society appreciates the support
it receives from the community. The annual Relay For Life in Regina was held at Douglas Park on June 8th, and was truly a sight to behold. Dozens of tents dotted the perimeter of the park, many decorated to match the themes of the various teams. Hundreds of people were in attendance, and the “Survivor Lap” was a long procession of proud cancer survivors who walk the first lap during the kick-off ceremony. The track was also ringed with luminaries, each one for a person who has survived cancer or has lost their battle with cancer. The lighting of the luminaries follows the kick-off ceremony, a beautiful honour to those who have fought cancer. The Relay For Life teams compete for 12 hours by walking around the track. Each team has to have a team member on the track at all times. This Relay For Life event in Regina raised $350,204 for the Canadian Cancer Society’s many services. Brian Cottrell, a cancer survivor, has been participating in the Relay For Life since 2001. “The Relay For Life is a supportive environment for people who have cancer in their lives. New survivors are really impacted by the outpouring of support and encouragement they experience at
the relay. Cancer affects the community, and it takes the community to help make a difference,” explains Brian. Prairie Women on Snowmobiles raise funds for the Saskatchewan Division of the Canadian Cancer Society for breast cancer research. This group, formed in 2000 by Jeannie Brewer and Carol Tulyk, had their first mission ride in 2001. One hundred percent of all funds raised are donated to the Saskatchewan Division of the Canadian Cancer Society, and the women have donated over $1.8 million to date. The women that participate in the ride must have their own snowmobiles, raise $3,000 each, and commit to the eight day trek. Participants visit many communities during their ride through and around Saskatchewan. Communities they visit usually have a banquet for the ladies, and the women hand out survivor pins to everyone they encounter who has survived breast cancer. Many valued sponsors and support people make their mission ride a success. “Communities have organized many different types of events for our arrival, including banquets, talent shows, survivor stories, speakers at banquets, and once, a family of three generations of breast cancer survivors even wrote and performed a song; anything a community does is greatly appreciated. We want to say a huge thank you to our corporate sponsors, as well as the communities and citizens of Saskatchewan,” exclaims Carol McKnight, President of Prairie Women on Snowmobiles.

Tammy Chamberlin is a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed in June 2010, and had her last surgery in October 2011. She says her surgical team was excellent, and she decided not to have reconstructive surgery, using breast prosthetics instead, a decision she is very happy about. She was unaware of many of the services available from the Canadian Cancer Society, but would now like to help others on their cancer journey. Tammy plans to volunteer with the organization this fall. “I had no idea what was out there in terms of support when I was first diagnosed. I attended
a very informative seminar, and that helped significantly. I am very lucky to have survived this disease, now I want to help others with the knowledge I’ve gained,” says Tammy. Costa Maragos is a news anchor and spokesperson for Men’s Cancer Awareness Month in September. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2001 after he was concerned about the history of lung cancer in his family. Costa was a smoker himself, and lost his father to lung cancer; he asked his doctor to screen him for cancer, and a tumor was

discovered. It was not lung cancer, but a very rare form of cancer called Thymoma located in his throat. If Costa hadn’t been concerned about his lungs, this cancer wouldn’t have been detected until it was quite advanced. He lost both his mother and father to cancer, and he strongly recommends that everyone discuss screening with their doctors.
the age of 35 increases your risk of developing melanoma by 87 per cent.
“If I hadn’t been proactive, I might not be here now,” says Costa. “Early detection is what saved my life, and I can’t stress enough how important it is to do everything you can to prevent this disease from winning. I was reading the New York Times article about CT scans that detect lung cancer. I started thinking about my family’s history of cancer, and my own choices about smoking. I was a little over 40, and started to get worried. I went to my doctor, and he ordered an X-ray to determine if there was anything to be concerned about. The X-ray picked up the tumor right away, and I was in surgery the following week to have it removed. My doctor said that this type of cancer usually isn’t diagnosed until it’s too late. I am so lucky that I decided to be checked; I wish everyone would take a proactive approach to their health.”

Doreen Callander is the cancer control coordinator for the Saskatchewan Division of the Canadian Cancer Society, and it’s her job to inform the public about the importance of prevention and early detection. The four most common types of cancer are breast, prostate, colorectal and lung, and skin cancer accounts for the highest number of cancer diagnoses in Canada. Studies show that about half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the health of Canadians. Do you enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, or unwind each day with a beer? Research shows that the risk of cancer increases in women even if they consume less than one drink per day, and in men even if they have less than two drinks daily. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Canadians, with youth being the most vulnerable. Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is one of the most common cancers in young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 29. There are certain things people can’t change, such as their age and family. However, there are some risk factors that you can change, including: • Be a non-smoker and avoid tobacco smoke. • Be physically active every day. • Stay at a healthy weight. • Limit alcohol use. • Reduce your exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun or indoor tanning equipment, like tanning beds. • Know your body and report any changes to your doctor or dentist. • Follow health and safety instructions “Throughout the year we have theme awareness months that are a fun way to engage the public in important health information. January is Tobacco Reduction Month, March is Nutrition Month and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, May through August we promote skin cancer awareness, September is Men’s Cancer Awareness Month, and October is Women’s Cancer Awareness Month,” explains Doreen. Heather Prosak is the spokesperson for Women’s Cancer Awareness Month in October. A popular deejay, she plans to promote cancer awareness throughout October. She has always been a part of Relay For Life, and wanted to seriously help with prevention. “Women typically take care of others, and forget to take care of themselves. October is for women to reflect on their lifestyle and ensure they are taking care of themselves, because they don’t want their family and friends to have to go through a cancer ordeal with them. Throughout October, I will be encouraging women to donate money to the Canadian Cancer Society instead of going for supper with their friends, and then call and tell me about it,” says Heather. Prevention and early detection are up to you. Be sure to talk to your doctor about your cancer risks, and sign up for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Reminder for Life program; your family and friends will thank you. FLR
Saskatchewan Cancer Agency The Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, a division of Saskatchewan Health, has existed since 1930, and is responsible for treatment of cancer patients. The agency is responsible to provide all Saskatchewan residents with cancer treatment, research, prevention and cancer screening. The agency`s two main components are chemotherapy and radiation treatment, in partnership with surgeons. They have a team of 650 professionals to assist cancer patients with treatments in Saskatoon and Regina, and are responsible for the day to day treatment of cancer patients. The Cancer Agency provides the Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), screening kits for people interested in screening for possible colorectal cancer. By the end of March 2013, everyone in the province over a certain age will receive these convenient tests in the mail.
“We are responsible for the treatment, prevention and screening for cancer in Saskatchewan.” The first stem cell transplant was done in Regina, and Saskatchewan had the world`s very first cobalt machine in 1952; this first radiation machine is now on display at the Western Development Museum. Saskatchewan made cancer reportable by law in the 1930s, and as a result, we have one of the oldest cancer databases in the world. “We are responsible for the treatment, prevention and screening for cancer in Saskatchewan,” says Scott Livingstone, CEO of the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.

ance Armstrong is a father, cancer survivor, advocate and cycling champion. In 1996, he was a 25-year-old world-class cyclist facing a struggle for his life against testicular cancer that had spread to his brain and lungs. Declaring himself a cancer survivor rather than a victim, he learned as much as he could about the disease and beat it despite overwhelming odds. With his treatment concluding, he created the Lance Armstrong Foundation, also known as LIVESTRONG®, to serve fellow cancer survivors. Today, LIVESTRONG supports survivors and their families through patient navigation services, by conducting survivorship research, by advocating for funding and policies that propel the fight against cancer, and by leading awareness campaigns to dispel the stigma and misconceptions about the disease. Cancer-free, Lance returned to racing and won the Tour de France an unprecedented seven times. In 2004, the now-iconic yellow LIVESTRONG wristbands became an international phenomenon and a grassroots symbol of support for survivors.
Lance retired from professional cycling in 2005 and devoted himself to his work as a leading advocate for cancer survivors. He has lobbied Capitol Hill, testified before Congress, served two terms on the President’s Cancer Panel, advocated for smoke-free measures across the U.S., addressed the United Nations and helped raise $450 million for people affected by cancer. In 2007, Lance helped unite support in Texas for the largest state-level cancer initiative in history. Proposition 15, overwhelmingly approved by voters, mandated the creation of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas and provided $3 billion for it to fund innovative and ground-breaking science and prevention efforts. In 2009, after more than a decade of advocacy work in the U.S., Lance returned to professional cycling in order to raise awareness of the cancer burden faced by nations around the globe through the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign. The landmark event of the Campaign was the first-of-its-kind LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit, held in Dublin, Ireland.
The unprecedented gathering of 500 world leaders, advocates, researchers, for-profit and non-profit representatives generated 300 new commitments to cancer control, representing an investment of more than $200 million. In 2011, Lance retired from professional cycling again to devote himself fulltime to his family and to leading his Foundation. That year saw the opening of the LIVESTRONG Cancer Navigation Center, marking an expansion of the direct services the Foundation offers to survivors, available online and by phone and now in-person. This communitybased center, one of just two facilities of its kind in the U.S., provides free, confidential, one-on-one support to anyone affected by cancer. To date, LIVESTRONG has served more than two million people through its navigation services. Today, Lance is a proud father of five and continues his service as chairman of the Foundation, leading its efforts to serve survivors and empower them to fight like hell. arry Frigon’s sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago, and Garry wished he could do something to help her and others suffering from this disease. and as realistic as possible, which is why he invented the patent-pending breast prosthetics and techniques to make them. Lisa B Originals prosthetics have realistic skin texture, and they are not covered in plastic. This allows the client to wear the prosthetics all day without sweating. They are also designed to go behind any bra, so the
client doesn’t have to wear a special prosthetic bra. They are lightweight, and the larger the breast, the lighter it is so clients don’t have to deal with heavy prosthetics that can result in strained back and shoulder muscles. “I wanted the prosthetics to feel as though they are a part of her, rather than her be part of the prosthetics,” explains Garry.
Lisa B Originals presents its new Lisa Simplicity line, which are affordable over-the-counter prosthetics available in sizes ranging from 32B to 42DD. Customers also have the option of having special-order prosthetics which include custom areolas created for the special-order line.

The breast prosthetics come in a variety of types, including custommade prosthetics, and self-sticking prosthetics that attach directly to your skin. There is also a line of glues to choose from so you can attach any of the Lisa B breast prosthetics to your chest wall. The custom prosthetics are custom-fitted to your body, and created to match you. Tammy Chamberlin is thrilled with her Lisa B breast prostheses. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, and had one breast removed. She had purchased a prosthetic off-the-shelf, and thought that was the only available option. She met Garry at a trade show, and immediately saw the difference in his products. She had her remaining breast cast at Lisa B’s prior to her second mastectomy, so the prosthetics she now wears look exactly like her breasts. “You have no idea how exciting it is to be able to buy pretty, lacy, normal bras and have my prosthetics fit. All Lisa B prosthetics are made for regular bras, so I don’t have to wear the special ones. After I bought my pretty new bras, I felt completely normal – just like I still had my own breasts. They are so comfortable and cool, and when I take my bra off at the end of the day, my skin isn’t the least bit red, moist or sweaty. Even in this intense heat this summer, I don’t have any problems at all. I can’t express enough how thrilled I am with my prosthetics!” raves Tammy. he medical aesthetic industry continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the Canadian economy. Millions of Canadians are seeking ways to appear refreshed and rejuvenated by using Botox® to correct fine lines and wrinkles, and Juvéderm to correct deep folds and creases. There is no way to turn back the clock, but there are ways to look younger and feel better while the clock is still ticking.
This expanding profession offers many consumer benefits. These include a wider selection of businesses to choose from, a better and wider range of services and stable consumer costs resulting from increased competition. The other side of the equation is not as transparent. The consumer may not be aware of the negative implications that can emerge when an increasing number of medical cosmedic practices compete for consumer dollars. Every person should be diligent when selecting a cosmedic injector. Look for three critical attributes before undergoing a medical aesthetic treatment such as Botox® or Juvéderm. The cosmedic injector should be properly educated and trained. Look for a professional with an extensive

knowledge of the field and a wide range of practical experience. This type of experience and knowledge does not come from a weekend course. It takes many years to develop the skill and understand the behaviour of the drugs. Botox® and Juvéderm injections are cosmedic, but they are still medical procedures that need to be performed in a medical setting with an on-site physician who specializes in cosmedic injectables. The cosmedic injector should provide a safe and comfortable environment that gives the patient complete confidentiality and trust. Proper client candidate selection must be a priority for your cosmedic injector. Clients should only be cleared to receive a procedure if they are compatible for that specific procedure. A proper assessment is important. These three simple rules provide the clearest way to decide whether a cosmedic injector is the right choice for you. Remember to always trust your instincts. You should feel comfortable and safe knowing that you made the right decision. For more information about cosmedic injection practices and procedures contact Karen Kohm BScN RN. FLR

eptember is busy with back-to-school and extracurricular activities. The incidence of children’s vision difficulties is one in six, so a complete eye health exam is strongly recommended when heading back to school. An eye exam is more than just a vision test to ensure your child sees 20/20; it may test eye focusing, eye coordination and eye health to rule out or treat conditions that can limit your child’s learning potential. In the early school years, a child learns to read and then reads to learn, and an eye exam is a valuable tool for successful learning. Additionally, a binocular vision assessment, also called an in-depth vision assessment, can assess children who are falling behind in school, or who are having difficulties with learning. Eye muscle skills are assessed in further detail than a routine exam, and visual perception (how the brain interprets visual information it receives) is assessed to determine if any conditions are present that can affect learning. Dr. Myles Bokinac at our clinic performs these assessments and vision therapy. This year remember to provide your child with one of the most valuable tools for successful learning: an eye exam.
The start of the new school year is also a great time to consider new eyeglass frames or contact lenses. Impact resistance and UV protection are paramount when purchasing eyewear, especially for children. Warranty is another important consideration, along with ensuring eyewear is suitable for the patient’s prescription and vision demands. Our optometrists are currently accepting new patients. was overweight since childhood. It runs in my family. Luckily it never kept me from doing sports, being involved in actives or having a social life. It was more of a private insecurity. I’m the typical bubbly, funny, laugh-about-anything personality,
so no one really knew my weight bothered me. But there I was, 33, married with two kids, 5’4”, and 268 pounds. I was starting to feel it. I lacked energy. My feet hurt. As a hairstylist I stand all day. Weight Watchers, L.A. Weight Loss; you name it, I tried everything. Then I saw Weight Loss Forever in Fine Lifestyles magazine. I read about it, called, and the next thing I knew, I was booked to have surgery within a month! I had no second thoughts. I knew this was a permanent decision, and I was ready for a life change. I’ve lost 85 pounds since surgery a year ago and have still another 25 to go to reach my personal goal. I can’t even say I’m a different person, as I always had confidence and a love of life. I am just so happy to have control over my weight now that I now have that “full” feeling, which I never had before. My coworkers say I haven’t changed one bit, but I have a way better wardrobe! The huge difference is that I’ll be here longer and can run and keep up with my kids. I can be a healthy example for them. The first thing people notice is my smile now, not my size.

am a 43-year-old nurse practitioner and national calibre Figure bodybuilding competitor. I have been a Registered Nurse for over 20 years and I have firsthand experience working with people who have had plastic surgery. I first learned of WLF offering cosmetic surgery services when they were the title sponsor for the 2011 CBBF National Figure, Bikini and Fitness Championships here in Saskatoon. As a volunteer, I spent time with Melanie and Blair and liked them immediately. I was thinking of having a breast augmentation then, but was training for my next competition so I decided to revisit it later. After winning my next show and taking the overall title, I contacted WLF to find out more. My facilitator was amazing and everyone at the office was so warm, friendly and genuine. I was very impressed. After consulting with another surgeon out of province, I chose to use WLF’s services. The hospital facilities were beautiful and modern, the staff were outstanding, and the results are gorgeous. As a nurse, I was very impressed with the entire process. I was taken care of very well and no detail was overlooked. I am now training to compete at the 2013 Nationals and I am thrilled with my new body. I couldn’t be happier. I highly recommend the cosmetic surgery services through WLF. I feel like WLF is family and I’m still in touch with my facilitator. I would definitely choose WLF again in the future.

What You Need to Know About Cosmetic Surgery Research Your Surgeon
Not all surgeons are are created equal or have the same level of training or experience. Think about the game of golf – a weekend golfer will never make the PGA. Plastic surgeons are the same – the more procedures they have done with excellent results, the better their overall outcomes will be. It is also critical that you know their credentials. Verify that they have the training they are claiming and ensure your plastic surgeon is Board Certified. Seeing a certificate is not enough – always check directly!
See Real Examples of Their Work
If you are thinking about a facelift, ask for pictures of facelifts that your surgeon has actually done. If you are thinking about breast augmentation, ask to see pictures of breast augmentations. Be thorough in your research, after all – this is your body we are talking about!
Talk to Real Patients
It’s one thing to see beautiful before and after photos – but what do the people who have actually been through it have to say about their experience? How was the care? How well did the surgeon explain the procedures, risks and outcomes with them? How did they feel about their follow up care? Would they do it again? Would they recommend their surgeon to their own family?
Be Prepared
Leading up to your procedure, take extra care to eat healthy, fresh, low sugar foods that are high in protein. Make sure to drink lots of water and exercise – the healthier you are, the faster your recovery and the better your results will be. And read everything you can about the procedures you are considering. Knowledge is power!

e’ve all been guilty of it; I, too, must admit that I was once guilty of it. It is our mindset of stereotyping people with hearing loss and hearing aids, or those who need to get their hearing checked. You get your eyes checked and you get your teeth checked, but often times a negative stigma gets attached to those who choose to get their hearing checked. I’m all about changing perceptions and challenging your line of thinking. What type of person gets their hearing checked? The same person who gets their eyes and teeth checked; the person conscious of all aspects of their health. When I was going to university to become an audiologist, I considered my class load, and felt I’d made an excellent decision to choose gerontology as my minor. I thought that hearing loss and aging are synonymous, correct? While it is true that hearing loss progresses more rapidly as we age, it is not the only thing that can impact a person’s ability to continue to hear within the normal range. Hearing abilities can be impacted at pregnancy or delivery, at various points in childhood and adulthood from insult or injury, ongoing medical conditions or acute

infections, recreational or occupational noise, and even, quite simply, genetics. I consider those who know that their hearing has fallen out of the normal range to be proactive. They most certainly are not considered archaic or old because these things can happen at any age. Research shows that the average age when someone purchases their first hearing aid is in their 70s, yet the same research also shows that one-third of all people with hearing loss are below the age of 55! We’ll get our vision and teeth checked from the time we’re a child, yet we’ll let our hearing go until we’re well into adulthood because of the perceived stereotype of it being an old person’s problem, and we’re all young, right? So, the next time you catch yourself asking why someone is mumbling, remember that those with early vision problems aren’t looking at others and saying “why are you so blurry?” You ask those questions because you don’t know what is actually happening with your hearing. Let’s wrap our minds around the fact that hearing can affect anyone regardless of their age, and start getting baselines so we can monitor these changes, just as we do with our teeth and our eyes. FLR
Let’s get those hearing aids out of the drawer & finally working for you Eastside Audiology can work with your existing hearing aids – old or new. We are an “all make” audiology clinic with onsite minor repair services and the capability to reprogram “all makes” of hearing aids. WileyX The adoption of the WileyX safety frame line as a complement to the Canadian gold standard OnGuard line and, together, representative of their core frame line, is in itself an interesting story. “Without boring anyone with the details, we came across this line at a U.S. tradeshow, were immediately impressed by its pedigree as the frame of choice for the U.S. military, and, unbeknownst to the company, had it approved for Canadian safety eyewear application. Fast forward to today, and we are by far the largest distributor of this line in Canada.” The manifest of these efforts is a client list today numbering 60 significant operations, with companies as small as a dozen employees, up to companies with employment complements in the thousands. “We have deliberately constructed our marketing program for F.O. Safety Eyewear to be flexible. Virtually every contract we have is customized as we early on recognized that no two companies share the identical needs,” notes McIntosh. With a retail chain of 15 wholly owned stores in Western Canada today and growing, the group is well positioned to service a large number of its clients’ employees through its own distribution network. Where it is not geographically possible to do this, “we send Licensed Opticians trained in safety fitting and dispensing wherever our clients require. We rent apartments where necessary and put our people onsite full time, when asked.” There are a number of organizations, according to McIntosh, that appear to dabble in Rx safety eyewear, but none that embrace it the way F.O. Safety Eyewear Inc. has. “I think that the traction that we have generated in this initiative speaks volumes to not only the effectiveness of our specific program, but to the unfulfilled need out there. Our VP Business Development would be better equipped to answer this, but I’m not sure that once a company has listened to what we have to offer, the price and flexibility with which we offer it at, anyone has said no. We just attended a convention in Vancouver last month, and our expectation is for another 20 corporate clients from that alone.”

Making a mark in the West The Factory Optical and Optiks International group continues to make its mark in Western Canada—today it’s in the early stages of constructing two more “super-opticals” in downtown Vancouver. Their destiny, however, would appear to be more diverse than that. With the roll out F.O. Safety Eyewear Inc., their mantra “that you really can be all things to all people” seems to be realistic. Their success to date is well documented by their designation by Quantum Shift ™ as one of the 40 most promising private companies in Canada in 2009, and more recently by their inclusion in the bestselling book That’ll Never Work, published earlier this year.

tough guy draws strength from Mom, two brothers, childhood pals, and the old green and white By Karin Melberg Schwier
W
hen he comes back to Saskatoon, the only thing deadly about Hollywood kickass bad guy Kim Coates is his mom’s killer cinnamon buns and his take-a-bullet love for his hometown, his alma mater, and his old school buddies. The prolific movie and television actor, on a short hiatus while wrapping the fifth season of the critically acclaimed FX cable hit Sons of Anarchy, came home in September to see Mom and lend support to the institution that inspired his calling. Kim Coates is a really nice guy. Unless you haven’t watched TV or movies in past two decades, that may be a bit hard to grasp. The actor has a propensity to play scary dudes–gun-toting killers, vampires, bikers, sleaze balls, myriad unsavoury characters, Macbeth, for goodness sake–so ‘nice’ isn’t the first adjective that comes to mind. That’s because Coates is a consummate actor who makes any character believable. All from an accidental start with a drama elective on a whim at the University of Saskatchewan. Talking to Fine Lifestyles on his cell phone after a morning run in Eaton Canyon near his home in Pasadena, Coates is in a talkative mood. It’s quickly evident he loves to talk about Saskatoon, family, his personal and industry friends, and his mission to help create a world-renowned centrepiece for arts at the U of S. Coates’ 82-year-old mom still lives in his childhood home and tends a rumpus room shrine to her son’s acting career. Joyce Coates was a career Safeway gal; his father Fred an Eaton’s man. A childhood with brothers Dale and Dean meant of having the run of his Exhibition neighbourhood, loving parents, enough to eat, and always a pair of skates so he could play hockey with pals.

“I love coming home to see Mom,” Coates says. “I lost my dad a few years ago, so seeing her is top priority. She’s an Energizer bunny.” He happily rattles off visiting the Brashes, the Frys, and seeing childhood buddies like Jim Lindsay, Larry Harley, and Murray Totland, Saskatoon’s city manager. Coates talks about them with the same warmth and admiration as he does industry pals like William Fitchner, Kevin Costner, Matt Craven, Eric Bana, even Christopher Plummer. You get the idea that if you gave them all hockey sticks in front of Coates’ old house, there would be one wicked game of shinny. “Murray Totland was my first buddy,” recalls Coates. “I was four, he was five. We used to walk to Thornton Elementary on Lorne Avenue every day. We’re still attached at the hip. To think he’s gone from us blowing up dinky toys in his back yard to running the whole city, well, it’s frightening.” Coates laughs. “But he does it so well, and no one could blow up a dinky toy like Totland. Seriously, I’m not kidding. The engineer was in his brain when he was six.” Coates had a quick wit and a pretty good knack for public speaking but a future in theatre wasn’t hardwired by any means. At Nutana Collegiate, pretending to be in Hawaii Five-O with Gord Pepper was the extent of Coates’ theatrical aspirations. He worked at Safeway on 20th Street part time to finance other passions–his first motorcycle and a ’67 Galaxy 500. He enrolled at U of S in 1977, vaguely planning to be a history teacher. There he stumbled upon two life changers. One, he met education student Diana Chappell, whom he married in 1984, and two, he put a check mark next to a drama elective.
Photo: Frank Ockenfels / FX
“Honestly, back in ’79 when I decided to become an actor, I’m not even really sure any of us knew what that meant. I remember watching classmate Dwayne Brenna on stage, thinking, ‘Holy crap, he’s good!’ I think we were probably a bit mystified by it all. Mom and Dad just knew I absolutely loved it.” After convocation for both Coates and Chappell in 1981, she taught in Kindersley before the couple moved to Toronto the next year. Coates went to auditions, waited tables at the Nag’s Head Tavern, complete with cummerbund, and lived off tips while Diana pulled their financial weight, teaching with the York Board of Education. It was a lean but exciting time of wide-eyed discovery as auditions and small parts came his way. Opportunities picked up steam and a short 18 months later, Coates landed roles in West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet at the Neptune Theatre with Tom Kerr in Halifax. Soon he was trodding the boards at Stratford with roles like the lead in Macbeth and as Roma in Bertold Brect’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. “My favourite writer, Joseph Campbell, says to follow your bliss and I believe that, but sometimes it’s tough,” he says. “You need someone to help you over those bumpy roads. If you love each other, if they can support you until there’s either nothing left to support or you’re a star, that’s what it takes. I was lucky Diana did that for me.” During this period, Coates caught the eye of New York agents for his Stratford work. While Diana taught in Toronto, Coates headed to Broadway where his career blossomed with plum roles. One of the most significant was taking over from Aiden Quinn the role of Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire. “I always wanted to be where the best work was, but I was almost an innocent about the whole time. I had no fear.” Two daughters were born in Toronto, Kyla in 1989 and Brenna in 1993. In 1995, the entire family made their way to Los Angeles, following Coates’ bliss. By that time, he’d gotten a green card with his work on Waterworld and other Warner Brothers projects, and had joined the Screen Actors Guild. When Coates realized he wouldn’t have to give up his Canadian citizenship–something he’d never do–the family became dual citizens in 1998. Now the veteran of over 50 movies and television shows, Coates says he’ll go wherever he needs to go to work on the best projects. “The two movies I worked on in Saskatchewan last year will forever be in my heart. I will go wherever I need to go to work on the best projects, I don’t care if it’s Hollywood or Winnipeg (where he recently filmed hockey comedy Goon, with Seann William Scott, Liev TOP Fishing at Chitek Lake FraMe As Stanley Kowalski in Broadway’s A Streetcar Named Desire MiDDle With parents, high school graduation bOTTOM Sons of Anarchy cast at premiere TOP righT As “Van Dusen” in Rufus. Schreiber and Jay Baruchel.).” Three feature films open this year: The Truth (he co-produced and stars with Forest Whitaker and Andy Garcia); those two Saskatchewanmade movies, Rufus and Ferocious, now in post, were shot in Dundurn and Saskatoon. In winter. “I about froze my knackers off,” he howls. “Soft? Totally soft, baby! They say you can take the boy out of Saskatchewan, but you can’t take Saskatchewan out of the boy. I’m not so sure that’s true.” Some tough guy. Coates admits being recognized as a ‘movie star’ these days gets “a bit out of control.” Recently in Amsterdam, the couple dealt with swarms of SOA fans. “But you’ll never hear me complain about a family from Vancouver running up to have their picture taken with me,” he says. “I’m fortunate to be in a hit show. It’s a bit of a pain when you’re having dinner with your wife, but I’m never going to bitch about it because I’m not that kind of guy. I’m from Saskatoon. Airports are crazy now,” he adds. “I don the ball cap once in a while.”

Coates gets intense about tragedies like the shooting at the Batman Colorado premiere. He’s angry about easy gun access in the U.S., an odd juxtaposition between Coates the pacifist and his gun wielding SOA character Tig Trager. “Guns in America,” he fumes. “I try not to get too political down here but I flat out hate it. I’m not talking about taking my 12-gauge out with my Uncle Mort to get some geese on his farm in the fall. I’m talking about the availability and the bullshit interpretation of a Constitution that was made for militia back in 1776 and has nothing to do whatsoever with having a right to carry guns today. Guns kill people. It’s disgusting. Don’t get me started.” How does he survive in the acting industry where early breakthroughs and career momentum can be difficult? Coates says as with any career, a good foundation in the craft is paramount and solid support gets the job done.

“It’s a tough industry to stay sane in,” he says. “But I love to explore, I love the dark side, the bright side. If it’s great writing, I want to play the guy. I like going to Eric Bana’s and William Fichtner’s premieres, and my own, walking the red carpet, talking to cockroach media like TMZ. I love it all. But I know what Hollywood is, and I came into it with my eyes open.” Mom was top priority on this Saskatoon visit, and there was a quick detour to the Calgary Film Festival for the world premieres of both Rufus and Ferocious. But Coates also booked time with people involved in the U of S Clarion righT: Kyla, humanitarian. Fluent in Swahili, Kyla works with One Heart Source (oneheartsource.org), non-profit organization empowering young people through education, providing high quality education and care for vulnerable children in Tanzania and South Africa. Says Kim, “She’ll be running the UN in 10 years, no doubt in my mind. brenna, actor. After getting the acting bug early, Brenna is following in her father’s footsteps. She auditioned and got into the Tisch Acting Academy at NYU. “She’s phenomenal. She loves NYU, loves the Village. She’s well on her way,” says Kim.

“We’re all so proud of him and never doubted he’d be successful. We go way back. My dad was a police officer, so we had to be a little careful but we had no end of things to get into. Lots of golf, hockey. There are two Kims: the Hollywood Kim, and there’s Coatsie from childhood, the really genuine down– to-earth guy I know and love. It would have been easy to forget about all of us back here and get caught up with his phenomenal success. But he still cares deeply about Saskatoon, what’s going on in the community and the university. Honest and open, it’s hard not to like the guy. I even let him beat me at golf once in awhile because he’s so likable.” Murray Totland, Saskatoon City Manager
Project, something dear to his thespian heart. The Project’s artful vision promotes innovative arts, multi-disciplinary programs, and ultimately a new fine and performing arts facility on campus. In September, Coates dropped in on U of S drama students in a new film class and had some one-on-one in a fourth year acting class. He attended the Broadway Theatre showing of his Regina-shot 45RPM. He lunched with Arts and Sciences Dean Peter Stoicheff, and dined with Jami Young, Bill Waiser, Kirby Wirchenko, and a few Clarion Project people. Coates counts former U of S President Peter MacKinnon as a friend and confidante. The pair has spent time on walks and over dinners talking about how crucial it is to expose students to a rich liberal arts foundation, to offer a chance for them to discover their own creativity, and to do more to grow a vibrant cultural community. Coates views his own involvement in the Clarion Project as a priority on his front burner. “You can never be the greatest university unless you have a centerpiece for art, for music, for drama. There’s been a phenomenal growth spurt with medicine, sciences, the synchrotron, but we’re not done,” he says. “Saskatchewan is really kicking ass in a lot of areas, so a prosperous time is not the time to dismantle the arts. I can’t wait until the next election because I’m going to be front and centre of anything that helps us get back the film tax credit so we can continue art and film and television and singing and dancing in this great province of ours.” Peter MacKinnon, former U of S President, describes his Coates connection. “Universities are social and cultural institutions as well as educational ones. A thriving arts community is an essential part of this mission, not only for students in the fine and performing arts but for the university as a whole and the community that supports it. It is important to have champions for the arts as it is for the sciences. Kim Coates is such a champion,” he says. “He is an outstanding and celebrated actor, a great friend of the U of S, and a terrific guy! We are all proud to count him among our graduates.” Coates realizes his good fortune in the business, but is aware of his own talent and contribution. “I just want to continue to be around people who create, whether it’s film or television or theatre, guys like Damian Lee in Toronto. A great night for me is to have dinner with Di, a nice bottle of Napa, and friends who wants to talk film, theatre, the Riders, and my Red Wings. And I love coming home.” Back in LA, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter “definitely has seven seasons up his sleeve.” The fifth season of SOA premiered September 11. It’s based on Hamlet and “we all know that doesn’t end well,” Coates grins. “We spent four seasons going up the hill and it’s only getting more revved up as we come down the other side. It’s really getting ferocious, just crazy.” When the series finally wraps Coates knows he will have been part of a phenomenal classic. The fact it was a huge hit was “icing on the cake.” A consummate chameleon, he can’t wait to move on to try on the skin of the next character. “I keep finding things in Tig, but a whole new character will be a great new challenge.” Another tough guy? Perhaps, he muses. You imagine him slouched on a boulder in Eaton Canyon, black hair wild, a smile on his lips, those ice blues gazing steadily across the San Fernando Valley toward the LA smog. “I am really excited about what comes next. I’ve done good guy, bad guy, comedy. I’m going to direct, and produce more. You know what?” he says. “I think my best stuff is yet to come.”FLR

onathan Thauberger, executive chef at Crave Kitchen + Wine Bar, left Regina in 1991 to attend the Dubrulle International Culinary Arts School in Vancouver. From there, he worked at some of the top restaurants in Vancouver, including Villa Del Lupo, which was considered to be one of the city’s best restaurants at the time. There he met his mentor, Julio Gonzalez Perini. “He kind of took me under his wing,” says Thauberger. “He’s a talented chef, a fantastic cook, and experienced in all facets of food industry. I learned a lot from the man, not only in cooking but in day-to-day operations.” After several more years in Vancouver and another four in the Okanagan, Thauberger said the timing was right to return to his hometown. “I like freshness and locality,” says Thauberger. “French and Italian ideals and philosophies start with great ingredients, and it doesn’t need to get complicated. Local and sustainable are buzzwords these
days, but it’s something that’s been going on in Europe for centuries.” He’s bringing those fresh philosophies to Crave, getting in touch with local growers, and using Saskatchewan-grown-andmilled flour for breads. While the menu won’t be changing drastically this fall, Thauberger says it will be “a little bit heavier in style,” and will have a strong focus on local products. “It will include a couple more braised dishes, more pulses that are locally grown, such as local lentils, and we’ll stick with some Saskatchewan-grown quinoa. Just as it’s winter, a little bit more hearty, a little bit more homey.”FLR

WORLD-CLASS ENTERTAINMENT AND FUN BY Lisa schick
I
t can be difficult to find good entertainment for a night out in Regina. The city’s relatively small size can make it difficult to attract the talent seen in larger cities, but Stephanie Thomson manages to write around Regina’s talent, and bring world-class shows to the Applause Dinner Theatre. For three years, Stephanie has been working hard at Applause to create an experience that keeps the community coming back for more. With three new shows in the lineup for the coming

season, and new money saving opportunities, Applause is poised to be busier than ever. Stephanie’s background touring the world as a recording artist, and as lead singer for the internationally acclaimed tribute band, Bjorn Again, means she’s perfect for the theatre’s new ABBA tribute show - Dancing Queen: the Story Behind the Songs, which opens September 20. The two-act musical comedy centers around the tumultuous private lives of the members of ABBA: how they met,
married and divorced, their bitter feuds, how they made amends and how they wrote their hit songs. “We’re going to go through their trials and tribulations, but with typical applause humour,” says Stephanie. Dancing Queen, which stars Stephanie Thomson, Brad Grass, Sheila Deck, and Greg Muszkie, is written by Brad Grass and directed by Mark Neudorf, with musical direction by Stephanie Thomson. This show promises to be the best since Stephanie took over two years ago.
In mid-November, Applause will give Dancing Queen a Christmas theme, incorporating holiday music and scenes into the set. A second Christmas show, The Retro Review, will play at the Austrian club, and then move to the Applause Stage in January. In February, Applause will adapt one of cable’s most successful shows into the theatre when they present The Big Bang Thesis. Come September, Applause will be working with a new sales manager, Margo Titanich; she will bring kids’ programming in the summer of 2013, including singing, acting and modelling workshops. Stephanie says the theatre is romantic, relaxing and a fun time for the whole family – even those who don’t normally enjoy theatre will love it. “It’s not the same as theatre; it’s dinner theatre, it’s fun.” The show offers the audience a full interactive experience, and includes a buffet dinner with a turkey dinner in the holiday season. The theatre rarely gets bad reviews, “Everyone always loves our shows, we make them for family audiences eight to 98,” says Stephanie. She says they’ve even had shows where people come back four or five times because they love the performance and the atmosphere so much. “I’ve had people walk up to me and say they couldn’t believe that show was in Regina... like it could have been in Vegas!” exclaims Stephanie. Applause Dinner Theatre doesn’t get government grants like some theatres in Regina, so they operate on ticket and alcohol sales alone. Applause’s new season passes start at $135 with a promo code, so people looking for an entertaining night out with dinner and a show can get it without having to put a dent in their wallet. Corporate sponsorship packages are available as well. Visit their website at www. applausetheatre.ca or email information requests to applause@sasktel.net.FLR

In the evening, among many Chinese items, there are fresh rolls and sushi, along with Canadian specialties such as roast beef and baked ham. There are also many dishes children will enjoy.
The outstanding aspect about food at Enjoy Plum Garden is that it has no MSG, either added directly, or as an ingredient in another flavouring. Too many people have allergies to MSG, and the owners want their meals to be accessible to everyone. They believe that good cooking skills are enough to make the food taste its best.
The most popular dish on the buffet is black chicken wings. Other items to note include the wooden pork, broccoli in garlic sauce, singing noodles, stirfried bean sprouts, curried chicken, minced pork with eggplant, mapo tofu and Szechwan green beans. The very appetizing dessert selection features homemade cake and fresh fruit.

he Regina Folk Festival is one of the longest running events in Canada, and the 2012 event had the most volunteers ever, with 570 people donating their time and effort. The Folk Festival is free during the day for anyone wanting to experience local and international artists, local vendors and a variety of food vendors. The children’s area expanded this year to include face painting, craft tent, children’s entertainers, tie dye workshop, improvisation (improv) workshops and many other attractions.

This annual festival, which takes place in the heart of downtown les Stapand mingle Regina at Victoria Park, offers a great place vismix Mato with many musical artists. “We want to preserve that part of the festival,” explains Sandra Butel, artistic director. “This is my 14th festival, and we are committed toSeengaging the community rena Ry e r in a quality event. We always feature about 30dartists, including local and international talent. We have at least one big headliner each night in the main stage area. That’s the only area where we charge money to access, but everything else at the festival
is free. Anyone can enjoy the four performance stages during the day at no cost. We maintain free access to the event so we can appeal to and attract different cultures within the community, different tastes and all age groups. This year we also had two beer gardens: one in the mainstage area and one open during the day.” Headliners at this year’s event included Emmylou Harris, Mavis Staples, Stars, The Jim Cuddy Band, Arlo Guthrie, Shad and Serena Ryder. Many more local and international stars entertained the large crowds: Elage Diouf, Alejandra Robles, Al Simmons, Pokey LaFarge and The South City Three, Rich Aucion and The Beauties. The Young Benjamins, a new band from Saskatoon, is making a splash on the festival scene. The name was inspired by the classic movie The Graduate, and features band members Kuba Szmigielski, Neusha Mofazzali, Veronique Poulin and Brynn Krysa. They have already released an album on iTunes, and plan to record a new album in October; they are also on Facebook, have a website at youngbenjamins. com, and are booked for many more performances. “Everything just seemed to explode about a month after we started. We’ve been busy on the festival circuit, and we have gigs booked for quite a while. We are lyrically folk and musically indie rock,” explains Neusha. “We play our own songs, and collaborate on new music. This festival is well organized, and the attendees seem to be here for the music, which is great.” Andy Shauf is originally from Estevan, but now lives in Regina; he has released five albums, including one full-length album, and will release another in the next few months. He writes and performs his own music, and he usually plays guitar or piano to accompany his relaxing songs. Andy has toured western Canada and the United States. “I like the Folk Festival, because it has a positive atmosphere, and people are here to have fun and listen,” says Andy. Kat Danser, originally from Regina, is now based out of Edmonton. After five years studying with Western Canada blues professionals, she moved to the Clarksdale area of Mississippi to immerse herself in the delta blues culture. An award-winning blues performer, Kat has won an international song writing competition, released three albums, and plans to tour Europe with her next recording. This was her first Regina Folk Festival, and she hopes to return. Kat believes that music is for everyone, and is grateful to be able to play to the diverse audience at the festival. A fan of the free daytime admission, Kat says the Regina festival is one of the top five in Canada. Noting that Saskatchewan is viewed as the template for artistic funding, she hopes the Saskatchewan Film Tax Credit is restored before the province loses access to international arts; she encourages Saskatchewan to advocate for the arts as a way of building community. Jayden Pfeifer, a Regina-based actor, comedian, entertainer and teacher, is a well-known improviser with his improv company, the General Fools. Facilitating improv education to youth across the country, Jayden is a Regional Director of the Saskatchewan Tournament of the Canadian Improv Games (CIG). His popular monthly Red Hot Riot show at the Artesian on 13th is now in its second year. Jayden hosted the festival main stage on Saturday, and facilitated the popular improv workshops for kids

throughout the festival. Now in his third year performing and hosting at the festival, Jayden says he hasn’t been to a better music festival. “We have a large and effective folk festival with a consciousness about the artists and hospitality,” Jayden says. Rosie and the Riveters are a new singing group that focus on different vocal arrangements based in folk and gospel. Members Melissa Nygren, Farideh, Kiera Dall’Ostro, and Alexis Normand are amazingly talented singers using vocal arrangements, choreography and humor to charm their audiences. They have released a full-length live album, and are excited about their tour this year and in April 2013. Looking like they stepped right out of the 1940s with their fashions, makeup and hair, they were inspired by the World War Two symbol, Rosie the Riveter. They want to show Rosie’s strength and power as a woman, while remaining feminine. These festival favourites are passionate about their music and image; they love that the Folk Festival is downtown, allowing them to enjoy the different restaurants and attractions available in the heart of our city. “This is our third festival this year, and we think it`s great that people can experience this festival at no charge. We`re enjoying the various artists and experiences here, collaborating and enjoying many types of music, which excites us as artists,” explains Melissa. The festival takes care of its artists by providing a large green room tent, communications hub tent, free food and drinks, and the popular new massage tent. Members of Rosie and the Riveters appreciated how well they are looked after at the festival, and hope to perform here again. Julia and her Piano released her first album on iTunes in 2009, and she says the festival is a great way to get exposure. The Estevan native has always dreamed of performing at the Regina Folk Festival, and thoroughly enjoyed performing and

facilitating workshops. “I performed on the main stage, and it was amazing. The audience was so supportive, and everyone is so warm and friendly. I love the opportunity I’ve had here to work with other artists, and experiment with different ideas. I used to come here as a kid with my family to watch the festival, and now I’m a performer,” exclaims Julia. Keith has been a volunteer at the Regina Folk Festival for 30 to 35 years, and he has always loved the event. “It’s small enough that the audience can see the performers up close, not on a big screen. Some festivals focus on the party, whereas the Folk Festival focuses on the music. We always have a great crowd of people that are here to listen to the music and have a great time. The music has changed over the years, and it’s great for everyone to experience different types of music. There are some people that arrange to meet up at the festival every year as a reunion, and we have a nice range of ages attending the festival. I had a more active role as a volunteer in the past, but now I’m helping to bring in the next generation. This give me more time to enjoy the festival artists, and I’m enjoying watching the volunteers have a good time. It’s a great idea for this festival to showcase local artists by having them perform on the main stage between the headline acts. Many festivals just play recorded music, but here the artists are able to gain exposure, and it’s certainly more entertaining.” Festival-goer Melissa is ecstatic about the festival`s energy and great attendance. “Everyone is here to have a good time; there`s a variety of entertainment, and everyone is friendly. The crowd is here to enjoy the music, not get rowdy. I will definitely come again next year.” The Regina Folk Festival is held every August; if you’ve never attended, put it on your 2013 summer calendar, and plan to be thoroughly entertained. FLR

“Our restaurant is our home, and it’s like having guests into our home. We treat them how we would like to be treated,” explains Beata Thompson, one of the four ‘Valley Girls’. “We also understand that our customers are on a tight schedule, especially during their lunch breaks, so we provide very fast service.” Everyone with Valley Girls Catering is encouraged to be creative with food. Many dishes contain unexpected combinations of ingredients which delight the palate. Valley Girls uses fresh ingredients in all their dishes, which
are prepared from scratch. “One of the greatest benefits of Valley Girls Catering is the staff members’ ability to regularly experiment with new food combinations and flavours,” says Beata. The supportive, artistic environment results in delicious dishes that are unique to Valley Girls catering, and now, Fresh on Hamilton. Offering an exciting twist on traditional menu options, Fresh on Hamilton is serving some seriously yummy paninis, wraps, homemade soups and incredible salads. Some of the amazing treats you’ll find are gourmet
candy apples, cupcakes, brownies, and cheese cake cups. But it`s not just the regulars... try a salted peanut butter and caramel brownie or peanut butter cheese cake cup. Sample their own brewed iced teas, in flavours such as blueberry rooibos and strawberry lemon. Just try to resist the homemade lemonade flavours: blueberry, watermelon mint, strawberry kiwi or cherry. Both Fresh locations are famous for their fresh baked products such as cinnamon buns, scones and muffins. “Not many places bake from scratch; every dish is prepared from scratch with fresh ingredients. We believe the quality of our food speaks for itself, and our customers agree,” explains Beata. On the weekend, Fresh & Sweet specializes in an extensive breakfast menu including waffles and pancakes, while Fresh on Hamilton features an extensive crepe menu. Made from scratch, of course, the many choices include red velvet crepes, a full benny section and a strawberry and goat cheese crepe. It`s definitely something you’ll want to check out. Fresh on Hamilton also assists with managing Valley Girls Catering. Whether you have a small business lunch, large wedding or anything in between, Valley Girls and Fresh on Hamilton will make sure that people talk about the amazing food at your event for a long time. very four years, athletes from across the globe congregate to one city for one purpose: to compete in the Olympics. The Olympics has always been viewed as a true performance of athleticism, and is remembered forever as the moment that athletes have worked so hard for. The early mornings, the long, tough days, the late evening practices, the perspiration, and the emotions all combine for one moment: their moment. And it’s captured for the entire world to see. The Olympics bring the chance for a nation to focus and show their pride and passion, cheering on athletes they’ve

never met, with little idea about the actual dedication it takes to compete at that level. It brings hope and excitement to a new level. The athletes are going for gold, and their nation is right beside them, watching as they attempt to achieve that goal. A perfect example of a Canadian athlete who exudes the Olympic spirit and determination is Winnipeg-born Clara Hughes, the only athlete in history to compete in both the winter and summer games—speed skating and cycling—and win multiple medals in each. Hughes broke her back in May 2012, but was determined to keep alive her goal of
competing in the London summer games. After attempting her seventh Olympic medal, she finished 32nd in the women’s road race. Hughes is a true champion, one who many of Canada’s athletes try to emulate. The people of Saskatchewan had plenty to cheer about as Team Canada headed to the 2012 London Olympic Games. The outstanding performance at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics renewed Canadians’ passion for their athletes. Saskatchewan athletes and coaches used that momentum in their brief moment in Olympic history to bring home medals and unforgettable experiences.
Saskatchewan’s 2012 Team Canada Athletes Brianne Theisen, from Humboldt, competed in the heptathlon for her first Olympic competition. Finishing 11th, Theisen is a 7-time NCAA Champion at the University of Oregon and is considered one of the best athletes in her competition. After winning the Canadian National Championship in the heptathlon in 2009, she went on to compete for Canada at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin. Saskatoon’s Krista Phillips travelled to London to play centre for the women’s basketball team. The last time the national women’s basketball team qualified for the Olympics was 12 years ago, making fans of the sport and athletes very excited for the London games. Although Team USA beat Team Canada in the quarter finals, 91 to 48, Phillips and her teammates gave an impressive performance during the games. Following a successful collegiate career at the University of Michigan, 24 year old Phillips currently plays professionally with the Dandenong Rangers in Australia.

Second time-Olympian Reuben Ross, from Pilot Butte, placed sixth in the men’s three metre synchronized diving event with partner Alex Despatie. Ross started his career with the Regina Diving Club, and as a teenager moved to Edmonton, AB to continue his training. In 2006, Ross was awarded an athletic scholarship in diving at the University of Miami. The 2008 Saskatchewan Athlete of the Year and the 2009 Diving Canada Male Athlete of the Year Olympian has won gold in the men’s three metre event at every winter and summer Senior National Championship since 2008. Rachelle Viinberg secured the silver medal with Team Canada in the women’s eight rowing event, and was the first athlete from Saskatchewan to earn a medal during the London games. Reginaborn Viinberg has trained with the Regina Rowing Club and the University of Victoria, where she earned a BSc in biology. This was the third Olympic competition for the current student of naturopathy at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. Viinberg has also competed in several

The London Games was his second Olympic competition. In 2008, Steacy became the first Canadian in 84 years to make it to the hammer throw finals in Beijing. Saskatoon’s Cory Niefer competed in the 10 metre air rifle event, finishing 46th overall, and the 50 metre rifle prone event, with a 38th place ranking. A national champion for over a decade, Niefer was a Team Canada coach in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was the first Canadian athlete to earn an Olympic spot for London 2012 after finishing second at the 2010
America Continental Championships in the 10 metre air rifle event. Another Saskatoon athlete, Kaylyn Kyle, played her first Olympics with Team Canada’s women’s soccer squad, ranked seventh in the world. Kyle’s initial taste representing Canada was on the U-17 and U-20 youth teams. In 2006, she played one year while studying at the University of Saskatchewan. Currently a midfielder for the Vancouver Whitecaps, a professional women’s soccer team, Kyle celebrated along with her teammates a bronze medal finish

The midfielder played the Atlanta Beat in the Women’s Professional Soccer league. After an injury-riddled 2011, the former star at the University of Texas at El Paso competed in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and secured a gold medal during the 2011 Pan American Games. Moose Jaw’s Richard Weinberger made his Olympic debut with a bronze medal win for his time of 1:50.30 in
the men’s 10 kilometre open water marathon. A competitive swimmer for 12 years, Weinberger started open water swimming a mere four years ago. coach. The team earned its Olympic spot in dramatic fashion this past summer, doing so on Canada Day with a victory over Japan during the last qualifying event. The women’s national team has not competed in an Olympic Games since 2000. Carla Nicholls, track and field coach, was head coach at the University of Regina for eight years before stepping down in 2010 to focus full-time on coaching with Athletics Canada. Nicholls also helped coach Team Canada during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. FLR

New Face, NEW HOPE By Dan Grant Photos Calvin Fehr

he Saskatchewan Roughriders and their fans were riding high. Although they had just lost for the second consecutive year in the Grey Cup, they were one of the best and most competitive teams in the Canadian Football League. Then, 2011 happened, and Brendan Taman, the general manager, understood that a different direction was mandatory. On December 15, 2011 that direction was set when Corey Chamblin was hired as the new head coach.
He’s a very personable guy, gets along with people, but demands respect.”
Chamblin was the defensive backs coach for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2007 and the Calgary Stampeders from 2008 to 2010. He applied for the Roughrider job in 2011, but when he didn’t get hired, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats offered him their defensive coordinator job.
Knox and fans aren’t expecting a championship right away, but the vibe around the team is promising, and there is a new hope being instilled. The players are focused, and they know they can’t mess around even at practice, or they won’t see the field.
The 35 year old hasn’t wasted any time installing his philosophy and standards in the players and coaching staff. If you want to play Rider football, then you are going to earn that right - plain and simple. “He’s a young guy,” says Jason Knox, host of Knox Talks Sports Radio on Blog Talk Radio. “The comparison gets made to Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League.
Roughrider Nation is hoping those demands turn into wins and a competitive playoff push. “The players play for him, and he has a set of rules to follow, or you will not be on the team. He has really laid down the law. It reminds me of what it was like when Kent Austin came here in 2007 and really righted the ship,” explains Knox.
Chamblin, who was born in Birmingham, Alabama, played college football at Tennessee Tech before moving on to the pro ranks with the Baltimore Ravens. From there, he went to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he appeared in 11 regular season games. After spending time in the National Football League with the Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts, he turned to coaching. Chamblin believes in the three E’s: excellence, energy and enthusiasm. That’s
the philosophy that is turning the Roughriders into contenders once again. Even with different defensive philosophies, Chamblin decided to keep defensive coordinator Richie Hall on staff. Hall, who has 25 years of CFL experience as both a player and coach, will be working with Chamblin to build the Roughriders into one of the best defenses in the league. Bob Dyce is the offensive coordinator and running back coach, and brings more of a game manager type of offense. “Not really going for the homerun consistently, but using the running, using the short passes, getting quarterback Darian Durant in a rhythm, which was a problem last year, explains Knox. New to the Riders staff this year is Kris Sweet, who will be the run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Sweet has come over from the Calgary Stampeders, where he was the offensive line coach for the past five years. Khari Jones, quarterback coach, makes the move to Regina after spending the last three seasons with Hamilton. Before he began coaching in Hamilton, he played quarterback in the CFL and earned the Most Outstanding Player Award in 2001 while with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Jason Tucker, who was forced into retirement in 2009 after fracturing his neck, began coaching with Edmonton as the receivers coach late that season. This year will be his first with the Green and White as the receivers coach. The last new addition to the 2012 coaching staff is Barron Miles, who will work as the defensive backs coach. Miles played 12 years in the CFL with the Montreal Allouettes, and won a Grey Cup in 2006 with the BC Lions. For the past two seasons, he was a defensive and player personnel assistant with the Lions. Other coaches include: Craig Dickenson, special teams coordinator; Alex Smith, assistant to the head coach and linebackers coach; and Mike Walker, defensive line coach. The new leadership will be looking to make an early impact, and give a glimpse of all the great things they hope to bring for a long time to come in Riderville. FLR

he biggest and best brand new Saskatchewan Roughriders merchandise store has opened in the Grasslands area next to Harbour Landing. This new Rider store is over 2,000 square feet, and features large windows to enhance its bright, clean atmosphere. Like the other three Rider stores, this store is the only CFL team merchandise store that exclusively sells Roughrider merchandise all year round. The store is committed to providing fans with exceptional selection, service and value. “We are thrilled to be a part of this

exciting new development with many new retail properties in the area,” says Mark Habicht, director of retail operations for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. “We wanted to have a presence in the southern part of Regina to make access to our products easier for our fans in south Regina, as well as Moose Jaw and other communities closer to the south end of the city. This is our fourth store; the first one was at Mosaic Stadium, and the other two are Regina Northgate Mall and in Saskatoon. This new fourth location makes all of our locations easily accessible to everyone
via Ring Road and Lewvan Drive.” This newest retail space has a different and modern design using environmentally sustainable features including the exterior materials, interior lighting, large windows to optimize exterior light, high ceilings and a bright silver, grey and white colour scheme. The store features eight 50-inch televisions so customers can always enjoy a Rider game while shopping. Its clean and bright racetrack layout allows customers to easily browse the extensive selection featured at the store.
All proceeds from the stores benefit the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and fans feel like they’re purchasing a piece of the team. “Most people don’t know that only a small percentage from Rider gear sales at other retailers goes to the Canadian Football League (CFL), and then is divided between all the CFL teams. All profits from the Saskatchewan Roughriders retail outlets go directly to the Riders to benefit the team. That’s why we want to make it as convenient as possible for our fans to purchase from our stores by adding this new retail location, because 70 per cent of all CFL sales across the country is Rider gear, but only 25 per cent of all Rider gear is purchased directly from the Riders,” explains Mark. The store has an amazing selection of Rider merchandise with clothing and accessories for everyone from infants to seniors, including the widest selection of women’s apparel in the league, medical scrubs, and so much more. Because the store is part of the team, there are regular player appearances and autograph sessions, and great value for your dollar. “We are a community-owned team, so we are accountable to the fans and the community. We want the product to be the best quality it can be, because our fans deserve and expect that level of value,” says Mark. ocated 10 minutes east of Regina along the TransCanada Highway is a jewel of a community Emerald Park. Vibrant and growing, this unorganized hamlet falls under the local government jurisdiction of the R.M. of Edenwold No. 158, overseen by a reeve and council. Developed on land originally annexed from the R.M., and subsequently de-annexed from White City back into the R.M., the first phase of residential development in Emerald Park started in 1985.

The community’s unique official status as an unorganized hamlet is not a wellknown or understood fact because of its growing size and services. Local R.M. councillor and resident, Wayne Joyce states, “Due to current municipal legislation, we can’t become an incorporated hamlet, village or town because of our adjacency to White City. We have no official municipal status, but we are working more at getting our own identity, including planning for more Emerald Park signs along Highway 1.”
Official status doesn’t affect this thriving community of 1,600. Initially designed to create a quiet community lifestyle with numerous walkways, abundant green space, neighbourhood playgrounds, tennis courts and a soccer field, Emerald Park has grown significantly since then while staying true to its initial vision. Joyce is quick to extol the virtues of larger lots, more space and the quiet ambience that he and his wife have enjoyed for the past 13 years, since building a home along the golf course.
A well-known community jewel, the Emerald Park Golf and Country Club, now called Aspen Links, was constructed in 1990 as an 18-hole course. One of the first golf courses designed to utilize treated effluent as an irrigation option, the fairways meander throughout the residential development, and Joyce takes advantage of his close proximity to the course whenever he can. “I’m an avid golfer, and it’s right out our back door. We also enjoy walking on the many pathways that run throughout the community,” he says. Gail Sloan, R.M. administrator since 2008, says “The community has been growing into more of a sustainable and self-sustaining community. We are seeing more retail, commercial and industrial growth. More work is being done on Highway 1 with the increasing traffic, and we’re very happy to finally see the RCMP build a detachment here that will serve this whole area starting in 2013.” Retail and commercial activity continue to abound here. Three strip malls offer a variety of businesses, and Great Plains Industrial Park, which started in the early 1980s, has grown and redeveloped significantly. A new restaurant, hotels and shopping developments are expected along the Highway 1 corridor in the near future. Many recreational jewels now dot this community: a multi-purpose soccer field and park, tennis court, ball diamond, an extensive network of walking paths, and four play parks for children. A 10-station fitness circuit is located near the soccer field, and the Communiskate complex operates as an all-season facility, overseen and run by a local non-profit board. Sloan sees the many residents who volunteer their time and effort as valuable “jewels” who help make things happen in the community. “It is a commuter community, but it still has a small town feel,” she says. Joyce is proud to call Emerald Park home. “Things are happening here. To meet the growth demands, we are changing and improving our water and sewer infrastructure, and we are looking forward to the golf clubhouse being up and functional by the summer of 2013. We continue to attract a variety of people to live here–young families, empty-nesters and many commuters.” This community is one jewel that will continue to sparkle brightly. FLR

ichard Kim lived in Vancouver for 20 years, and trained to be a chef specializing in Japanese fusionstyle rolls. He wanted to offer a taste of Vancouver in Saskatchewan, so he opened Urban Sushi & Grill in March 2012. “Fusion rolls are all the rage in Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles, but no one does them out here. I wanted to offer the people of southern Saskatchewan something the people in British Columbia, Ontario and California have been enjoying for years,” explains Richard. The restaurant has been renovated to feature a relaxing ambience with an af-
fordable fine-dining experience that offers customers value for their money. Everyone is welcome here: from couples on their first date, to families wanting an affordable evening out, to hungry work crews wanting a substantial lunch. The portions are large and very reasonably priced, attracting a clientele from miles around, including Regina, to sample the unique cuisine that this establishment offers. Richard is the chef as well as the owner, and he takes pride in the high quality of his food. He shops every day for the choicest products to ensure the freshest ingredients are in his dishes; almost every dish is made entirely from scratch,
and Richard is eager to share his vision of quality and service with his customers. Japanese cuisine, Korean barbeque, Chinese dishes, other Asian dishes and American hamburgers are features for Richard’s valued customers. His popular homemade hamburger patties are rumored to be very tasty. The Japanese fusion rolls are made with ingredients not normally seen with traditional rolls. “Traditional Japanese Sashimi rolls are very simple, and use very limited ingredients. The restaurant has a 91 per cent satisfaction rating on a popular restaurant website. Urban Sushi & Grill is valued for its great prices, large portions and high quality food. The restaurant takes reservations, but also welcomes dropin customers. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is only present in a minute amount in one of the salts used for cooking, so the restaurant is virtually MSG-free. Richard is committed to exceptional customer service, and he and his wife provide an intensive training program for all the servers. “They need to train very hard to know the ingredients and flavours. They are professionally trained servers that are passionate about their customer service and the quality of the food. They are able to not only discuss every item on the menu, but they are also able to recommend the appropriate accompanying wine, Saki, or
beer to ensure the customers have the best possible dining experience. We want our customers to really enjoy their entire dining experience, and not only come back, but also tell their friends, smiles Richard. Not only does the restaurant offer a great dine-in experience, they also offer a popular take-out option. Customers are pleased to be able to pick up their freshly prepared dishes to enjoy in their home, perhaps during a football game or family movie night. ow that you have decided which projects to tackle around your home, the most difficult and important job of any project is the selection of the contractor who will do the work for you. Before the first nail gets pounded or the first piece of tile chosen, you’ll have to make a decision that influences every facet of your project. Hiring the right contractor can make the difference between having a fantastic experience or an ugly nightmare. Also, you will want to be sure to give yourself plenty of time since there is an ever- increasing demand for qualified contractors. Homeowners often think that they can go it alone, and that they can be their own renovation contractor. Some can succeed in this, but more often than not, it has been my experience that homeowners-turned-contractors fail. I am constantly invited into homes and

Working with friends seldom works; some details get overlooked, or are found not to be necessary (like a building permit or workers compensation coverage). In one case, a client had a deck extension built by a friend in offence of a bylaw and, as a result, the deck had to be reduced to its original size.
assess. Ask for references and then check them out. I’m amazed by how many people will get references and then never bother to phone or drive by. If the onsite people are not registered with the Workers Compensation Board of Saskatchewan, you are responsible in the event of an accident. What are their work habits; where are they buying materials from; and are the bills being paid to the materials’ supplier? (Remember, a contractor’s supply store can lien your house). Does your contractor have third-party liability insurance? Are they properly licensed? Do they have a home and/or office phone number? Personally, I wouldn’t associate with companies who operate exclusively with a cell phone or pager. Many of these companies will be what I refer to as “tailgaters”, who may be here today and gone tomorrow.
One of the most powerful, compelling reasons to choose one renovator over another is reputation, but unless you’ve already dealt with a company, a solid reputation is sometimes difficult to

guided through this or that horror story where renovations went terribly awry. Word of mouth is still one of the best ways to choose service trades, but whose opinion should you trust? Talk about your renovation project with family, friends, building supply stores, city planning and permits offices. of your needs, and will provide the same materials and quality. Over the years, professional networks sprouted up across Canada that became trusted to accomplish renovations properly. In the 1960s, there was Blue Army. Later, there was Mr. Build and Mr. Renovator. For a time, an automobile advisory network had a renovation services network for its members. The reason for such networks is simple: homeowners demand quality products and professionals. However, to refer a company, tradesperson, or product, one has to understand how the job has to be done. Companies and individuals have to be checked out before they can be recommended.
People often think that referral services can create an unnecessary expense when dealing with home improvement projects. But how much more does it cost if the job isn’t done right? Getting caught by an inspector attempting to band-aid a repair can be plenty more costly than having professional do it right. The Canadian Home Builder’s Association of Saskatchewan has developed a program that will help you find reputable tradespeople for your home improvement projects. To view their roster of qualified contractors, visit www.RenoGuide.ca Hopefully this will better prepare you to take on your renovation project. It is a bit of work, but proper preparation will help ensure that your project goes as it should, that there are no nasty surprises, and you end up with the result you were hoping for. FLR

new property development company is bringing fresh ideas to the Queen City and surrounding area with townhouses priced under $200,000. This summer, vacancy rates in Regina were the lowest in the country for the second year in a row. Affordable housing and rental properties are in greater demand than ever, and Saskatchewan’s newest property development company, Canadian Builders Logistics Group (CBLG), has the solution for those needs.

A block of four, six, or eight town homes can be ready for occupancy in as little as three months, which is great news for both renters and investors. The quick turnaround time is thanks to their use of quality modular housing components: buildings are divided into smaller, more manageable parts that are built inside in a factory and then assembled on site. This also means they can continue construction all year long, regardless of weather conditions, and hire contractors locally to finish the buildings.
Managing partner, Dean Yates, says that when he started working in the systems built housing industry nearly 30 years ago, modular housing components weren’t well understood or used efficiently. “Now, Canadian Builders Logistic Group can provide that service and that integration, allowing us to review your project, and see how we can produce any variety of buildings using systems built technology, and do so in a costeffective manner,” explains Yates. “Cost
certainty in today’s uncertain world only makes sense.” Investors save time and money, and renters and new homebuyers get houses that are affordable, stylish, sustainable and ready to occupy quickly. CBLG was created with the Regina market in mind; before launching, they listened to buyers and learned what they wanted to see in their properties. “Because we are listening to what buyers want, we know that we are creating a business model for success, not just for us, but also for the people we will be working with,” says managing partner, Bev Herperger. They bring building projects from concept to completion, providing high-
quality property development and construction for just about any project, including condominiums, apartments, hotels, strip malls and even entire subdivisions. “We strongly feel that we fill a niche in the marketplace in Saskatchewan’s booming housing economy,” says managing partner, Ron Bunner. “By providing concept-to-completion services, we allow investors to focus on their own businesses, while we build their investment property, whether it is a multi-family building, retirement home or hotel.” With the town homes, investors can purchase a four, six, or eightplex town house, rent it now, and sell it down the line. Plus, CBLG offers even further discounts to investors
who buy in bulk; it’s an amazingly lucrative investment opportunity. Their team is extremely varied, and includes architects, manufacturers, builders, lenders and contractors. Everyone involved has various areas of expertise, so they can take you through every step of property development. They’ll assist you with land purchase, financing, site drawings and construction; then once your project is complete, they’ll even pre-sell or manage the property for you through associated management companies. “We are very fortunate to have the skill and expertise of each member of our team,” says Herperger. “Mr. Wojtek Wardinski will be providing the coordination of services for all the design work associated with these projects,

including structural, mechanical, electrical, civil and architectural work, through the collaborative efforts of registered professional consultants.” As Regina and surrounding communities continue to grow, so will the need for housing. Whether you’re a renter looking for the right space, a first-time home buyer looking for a house at the right price, or an investor looking for property with great returns, CLBG will fill that niche. “We stand behind our values, and pledge to deliver a solid product that puts people in homes where they will

live comfortably and with no worries about their future,” says Herperger. “It’s a privilege to be working with families right here in Regina, and we predict that our company will impact the lives of hundreds of people through our diligence and attention to budget and community sustainability.” With the modular systems-built design town homes starting at just under $200,000, and ready for quick occupancy, CBLG is poised to bring a housing renaissance to Regina. Investors working with CBLG can also feel confident their investment will be successful.

verything about a Vivid home is unique: from the striking kitchen back splashes, to the rich granite counters, to the luminous lighting. You feel as though you can see yourself living there; spend some time with the home, and the bright future memories start forming. With Vivid Custom Homes, no expense is spared; these picturesque houses feature hardwood throughout, gorgeous tiling in the washrooms, and crown moulding. Every corner holds a dynamic detail, but the resplendent look of the

homes only scratches the surface of the kind of quality you’ll find. The excellence of these homes is due to the careful and persistent work of Ray Rieger, owner of Vivid Custom Homes. He started his business in late 2009 because he wasn’t happy with what he saw on the market for the prices. “I was looking around at all this houses going up, and they all looked the same,” says Rieger. “There were a few homes that stood out, but the prices were
crazy. I thought I’d like to build a home for somebody that really showed their personality.” Making a home your own goes beyond decorating with Vivid Custom Homes; Rieger and his designer will sit down with you to figure out exactly what you need and want in a new home. “I want that design to be perfect,” says Rieger. “I want to work with them, so we build exactly what they envisioned.”

Every aspect of a Vivid home is customizable. Lighting, interior finishes, exterior design, flooring … if you can dream it, they can do it, and bring it to life in a way you couldn’t imagine. Rieger is up for any challenge when it comes to homebuilding, no matter your budget. Because Vivid Custom Homes is a boutique company, each home receives the attention it deserves. The tradespeople are never rushed because the quality of the building and getting it right are of the utmost importance. At the end of the build, the tradespeople are proud of the work they’ve done. Rieger is diligent in the work he does; he doesn’t take short cuts. He spends time searching for the best tradespeople, because he only wants the best people building Vivid homes. “I know the quality is there,” adds Rieger. “That’s my passion; I want to make sure the quality is there throughout the house.” With a Vivid home, top quality doesn’t equal an astronomical house price. Surprisingly for a home builder, Rieger has never held a hammer in his life. Instead, he comes to the business of homebuilding as a numbers guy, having previously worked as a financial planner. This somewhat unconventional
116

background is a huge benefit to the home buyer. “I crunch numbers,” says Rieger. “I find ways to save money, and to give quality without the cost.” Making a high-end home affordable “is actually very easy,” says Rieger. He never cuts costs on labour, but there’s always savings to be found in the right products and the right choices. When consulting with clients, he always has several selections of materials to choose from, and thanks to his background as an accountant, he knows all about budgets and is not shy discussing them. In fact, one of the best parts about working with Rieger is that he’s so approachable and friendly. He’s a guy like you or I, who just happens to love the business of building luxury homes. His relaxed, laid-back attitude is a breath of fresh air in the homebuilding world. And just because he doesn’t wield the hammer doesn’t mean he isn’t involved in the homebuilding process. Before he started Vivid, Rieger mentored under a contractor, and while he was building his first home, his mentor was there for support. During that first build, and for subsequent builds, he absorbed the art of homebuilding like a sponge, always
watching, learning and asking questions. “I’m always on hand; I’m always at the job site, figuring out what’s going on, making sure the product meets my standards in all stages.” In a Vivid home, it’s all about the details. When you visit, you’ll notice beautiful elements in every corner of the house. The houses themselves are works of art; how you decided to finish the look will only enhance its stripped-down beauty. Experience the distinct style of a Vivid home for yourself: the house at 1826 Blake Road in Lakeridge is open for viewing and available to buy. BEYOND BUSINESS CARDS 122

etworking is an important activity when it comes to marketing and building a business.
Getting to know the other person is a high priority in the follow up meeting, it’s also equally as important to talk about yourself and your business. People can’t get to know you unless you share, this builds credibility and trust. Along the way try be likeable, it’ll get you further in your networking. Networking requires some effort; it calls for more than handing out or collecting business cards. Networking is about meeting people and getting to know them so that they’ll want to get to know you and your business. Win over their hearts and you’ll win more business. seek to understand another person. This requires exercising listening skills. Listening is the highest honour you can give someone, and it is a key factor in creating influence. Studies show that in an average day, 45 per cent of our time is spent listening, yet we receive little to no training or education on how to improve that skill. As adults, our ability to listen (not just hear) also diminishes with age.

nly one thing stands between you and success. It isn’t experience; it isn’t talent. If you want to succeed, you must learn how to connect with people. It may seem like some people are just born with it, but anyone can learn how to make every communication an opportunity for a powerful connection (Everyone Communicates, Few Connect by John C. People with extroverted behaviour are often seen as natural leaders because of their ability to express their thoughts and feelings. While passionate, outspoken and enthusiastic leaders can energize a working team, they may also be the team’s biggest obstacle to overcome because they are less likely to be receptive to others’ ideas; employees can feel unappreciated, stifled or inconsequential. Listening is much more than just not talking. While the introverted leader may not say much, their thoughts can be running like a sixlane highway. This speed and internal conversation can create an illusion that the person is listening. Becoming a better listener calls for an increase in awareness, first with yourself and then with others. Consider your intentions before going into a meeting: what’s on your agenda, what’s on your mind, what are you feeling? Be present in your mind, and focus on the conversation and the person you are meeting. A helpful tip for getting present is to do a body scan or a five-sense check. It’s important to have a goal in mind or a desired outcome from the conversation, but it’s equally as important to identify
what the other person wants and is looking for. Developing listening skills is an exercise of intention and focus. When conversations are tempted with emotional intensity, it helps to have a simple exercise to work with while maintaining focus. Following is a three-step system you can use to practice your listening skills, LOL: Listen, Observe, Learn. Listen to what is being said, what is not being said, and the overall or underlying message. Observe or notice the facial expressions, eye contact and body language. Observe their language, their tone, perhaps beliefs or biases. Learn. Think. Process all the information coming in. What am I learning about the person, the situation, the goal at hand? The more you listen and observe, the more you will learn about the people and situations around you. The further you go along this path, the more insight you will unlock. ometimes it can be hard to know where to go and who to trust when you’re dealing in business. How can you know you’re getting a high quality product in a fair way, and that you will get good service later? When you deal with Warner Industries, these doubts disappear. Not only are their products top-shelf, customer service is key for them. Their dealership is a multiple award-winner; it has been named one of Saskatchewan’s top 100 companies and one of Regina’s top 50 companies for the past three years. Warner Industries’ extensive fleet of commercial vehicle offerings includes Freightliner trucks, Doepker trailers, Thomas school buses, and Diamond coach buses. The Diamond buses, typically used in shuttle services, have a unique fibreglass body that is strong,

easy to repair and obviously rust resistant. The windows are pressed into the body, so they’re rattle-free, creating an extremely quiet ride. Warner Industries recently became the exclusive dealer for Fuso Mitsubishi trucks in Saskatchewan. Fuso, a small commercial truck, can be customized for almost any use with a flat deck, dump body or van body. Compared to competitive North Americanmanufactured one-and-one-half ton trucks, the Fuso comes out ahead in every category, especially when it comes to fuel-efficiency, manoeuvrability and durability. A typical Fuso with van body can be leased for only $898 per month plus tax from Warner. Warner Industries’ enthusiastic customer service is a perfect complement to their
high quality products. In every office displayed on the wall, you can find their motto: “Our vision, our goal, is to delight every Customer external or internal, every day, every time, without fail, no exception.” They are the only truck and bus dealership in southern Saskatchewan open seven days a week, and they are on call 24 hours a day to offer emergency repairs to help customers. “The transportation industry is seven days a week; we think we should be open when our customers need us,” says Graham Warner, owner of Warner Industries. One of Graham’s mottos in life is “Never say ‘whoa’ in the middle of a slough.” It’s served him well both with his company and in his personal life, when he and his wife, Dionne, were confronted with a huge personal challenge.
Graham has been faithfully at Dionne’s side for more than 12 years, and during that time Dionne has become a seven-time cancer survivor. Her first diagnosis was in 1995, and she was recently diagnosed for an eighth time. Their journey has been long and arduous, but through it all they have kept their spirits up. Dionne jokes about her chemotherapy between 2009 and 2012, when she and Graham would dress up and dance into therapy for every single treatment. Graham and Dionne’s love of life and for each other is obvious, and Dionne’s zest and excitement is contagious. Graham says he can always locate Dionne - he just follows the sound of laughter. The pair’s relationship and journey is so inspiring, they were approached by an author to write the story of their life. Written by Deana Driver, the title of Never Leave Your Wingman, comes from a conversation Dionne had with Graham when she was again diagnosed with cancer before their nuptials. She told him he didn’t have to marry her, and as he held her hand, he replied, “You never leave your wingman.” Graham and Dionne’s passion for life and for helping people has expanded into their business. Dionne is a motivational speaker who travels across the country. Warner Industries supports her speaking engagements, which have resulted in her message being delivered to thousands of people. Warner Industries has been involved in the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life since almost the beginning. They are a silver sponsor of the event and also help out wherever they can with other fundraisers. This year, they donated a semi-truck to Curves Fitness for their first annual breast cancer research fundraiser “Tug for TaTas Day”, where women pulled the truck across a parking lot with a large tow rope. Graham and his father started the company 31 years ago with six employees. Today, Warner has more than 200 employees, and operates out of five facilities in two provinces. You might think that concentrating on his wife’s cancer battles would take away from running Warner Industries, but Graham says the challenge gave his lifelong friend and General Manager, Roger Pettigrew, and the staff, the opportunity to rise to the occasion, and the company has flourished. Today it’s one of the premier commercial vehicle sales, leasing, and repair businesses on the Prairies. FLR

o you love owning your business, and having the freedom to choose your own path? Do you find that you don`t have the time to do some of the basic business functions like printing, shipping, communications plans and graphic design? Don’t you wish there was a place that you get your printing, business cards, packing, faxing, postcards, banners, posters, digital printing, mailbox services, door knockers, shipping and graphic design done all in one place? Do you wish there was a place that understood the challenges of owning a small business, and wanted to help you achieve success? The store is helping businesses in Regina with fast printing at competitive prices, and has added a new printer that allows them to print large posters, and banners up to 55 feet long and six feet wide. Ahmed’s vision is to assist small businesses in Regina and area to achieve success in the marketplace. “We value each customer that walks through our door. We build personal, individual relationships with our customers, and we have a genuine interest in their success. We are not like big-box stores; we are all about customer service and satisfaction. We understand that our customers are busy; we can receive shipments for our customers, and provide 24-hour access to mailboxes and photocopiers. and want every customer to feel valued. “I am a small business owner helping small business owners. If my customers are successful, then I am successful. I want to help my customers realize their goals by making it as easy for them as possible,” says Ahmed. “Ahmed always does a fine job, and really works hard to make sure that I’m always satisfied. Usually I’m running in there asking, ‘Can you do it immediately? Stapled? And can I wait for it?’ He always has a very gracious manner; it`s kind of a throw-back to the service days of printing. When you walk in there, you can tell that he’s actually happy to see you,” raves Allyson Beckel, Mary Kay Cosmetics mentor. Steve Bell says, “If you can think it, Ahmed can do it: everything from post cards, business cards, and more, including designing my email signature on my emails. Their prices are reasonable with fast turnaround. They’re just really good people who are courteous, friendly, honest and not too busy to help.” “I always use the UPS store to print my flyers and graphics. I have referred many other business clients to him through the Tradebank network, and everyone has given positive feedback. His in-house graphics department always does my designs and print jobs on time, and on demand,” says Dan Benesh, owner of Tradebank Regina. INNOVATING TO MEET YOUR NEEDS Fourth-generation Paul Kutarna brings innovation and new direction to this age-old family real estate investment enterprise founded in the late 1920s. As company vice-president and manager of operations, Paul is enthusiastic about these new avenues of business. “A Bobcat is a powerful tool that naturally lends itself to inventiveness. These days you have to be innovative to climb the tall walls of competition.” Safety, insurance, licensing and code compliance are all given requirements, but networking within the business community connects expertise and cost expediency. “I like that, and so will you,” says Paul. “If you want it, I’ll figure out a way to get it done for you.” Understanding a client’s needs and desires are fundamental to achieving satisfying results. A project is envisioned and a plan begins to formulate. A job scope is developed, time lines are established and product elements are identified. When a prospectus is finalized, fair market pricing is applied to the equation to arrive at a reasonable, but more importantly, affordable bottom line. “Whether it’s snow removal, lot levelling, landscaping or construction site tasks, we want your business because we guarantee that you will want our services,” adds Paul.

At the end of a tough work week, a relaxing ride with family and friends to restaurants and entertainment functions in our company limousine is a reward you deserve. Work hard, play hard. hen I walked in to TCU, I have to admit I was sceptical. My relationship with my bank is fairly antagonistic and impersonal, and I was doubtful that TCU was any different.
The Saskatchewan based credit union is about service to its members rather than about profit, like a bank. “We earn loyalty, we don’t expect it,” explains Dale Smith, Executive Manager, Business Strategy and Innovation.
While often reluctant to admit I’m wrong, in this case, I can say I’ve come full circle. My next account or mortgage will surely be through the innovative services offered by TCU Financial Group. It’s obvious that they work hard to provide services that matter to me, and that my voice matters.
Aside from the exceptional member service that TCU is renowned for, the progressive institution is always looking for ways to improve. Recently they’ve added modern conveniences, like the personal teller machine (PTM) and video banking.
132
FineLifestyles
REGINA
The PTM features a live video teller who will help you deposit cash or cheques without ATM holds, obtain certified cheques, withdraw specific denominations of cash and receive exact change, and much more. CEO Morris Smysnuik states that “members frequently tell us they want to bank on their time, without losing the personal touch and working relationship they have come to enjoy with TCU. And while technology is always changing and most times seems very impersonal, members will still appreciate seeing and hearing someone ask, ‘How may I help you?’”
TCU has extended the personal teller machine hours until 8:00pm most nights. Visit www.tcufinancialgroup.com to view a PTM demonstration video. Another groundbreaking practice is TCU’s video banking capabilities. TCU is bringing their office to you. Soon, you will be able to confer about your mortgage, accounts, or any complicated financial business from your home or office. “Our members want convenience, and video banking makes it easy to bank on your time and from your place.” explains Dale. While they have pioneered many technological aspects of banking, TCU continues to look for new technology that will increase access and make banking more convenient.
“As a small business owner, my time is very valuable. The extended “Teller” hours that TCU is offering with the introduction of the Personal Teller Machines makes it easier for me to bank on my time.” —Whit Bacsu
Sometime in the near future, smart phones will act as debit and credit cards – you will wave your phone in front of the terminal instead of inserting your chip card to pay for your purchase. Also, you won’t have to visit a branch to deposit your cheque—instead you will be able to take a picture of your cheque with your phone and send the image to TCU.
Whit Bacsu, Owner, Titan Stainless
TCU’s passion, according to their website, is to “build a lifelong relationship with you by delivering progressive financial solutions in support of what is important to you.” With this commitment, TCU will help you realize your financial potential. TCU wants to earn your business. Any new members who mention this article when opening an account, will be given a year of free service charges. More hours. More access. More convenience. All this and a commitment to helping you reach your financial potential. I know I am going to give them a try, and I think you should too. FLR

Majestics car club celebrates 50 years by Shawna Common Photos Calvin Fehr
S
itting around tables in the Majestics Car Club’s clubhouse was reminiscent of a family reunion, with the old-timers on one side, and the younger generation mixed in on the other. This was the club’s 50th anniversary celebration, consisting of a pancake breakfast and a show-and-shine tour with the members’ club vehicles. Original old-timers told jokes and swapped stories about the good old days when the club was in its infancy. Six of the 25 members started this car club in the fall of 1962, complete with a charter of rules to govern themselves. Members had to own a pre-1949 vehicle, have a steady job and a white driver’s licence, which meant a clean driving record.

The original clubhouse at Tubbies Pizza on Dewdney Avenue and Elphinstone was owned by Wayne Stedman, who became a honourary member. “He had the best pizza I’ve ever tasted,” laments one original member, “I really miss that place!” The laughter and camaraderie is infectious, and the club really feels like a family. They take care of their own just as a family would; for example, if a member or former member becomes ill, the club will hold a steak night to raise funds for their friend. They are also committed to the community by raising funds or volunteering for charity, hosting blood drives, and volunteering for fundraising campaigns hosted by the Salvation Army and the Regina Humane Society.
When the club started, the community was suspicious of this new hot-rodder club and its members. People thought they were the same as the outlaw biker groups springing up all over North America. The club wanted to change the negative perceptions of car clubs, so they adopted a community contribution philosophy that has evolved into a core component of their club today. The very year they were formed, they started a volunteer driving program that transported teens and disabled people to and from programming at the YMCA on Sunday mornings. They also had business cards printed, and gave them out to people who they would help on the side of the road. For the first five years, the club held a dance to raise funds for local charities. All proceeds from the dances went to the United Appeal, now known as the United Way.
Their first car show in 1967 had a precarious beginning. They needed $3,000 to put on the show, but none of the members had that kind of wealth. Three members, including Ron Chamberlain and Bob Botkin, went to the bank and each took out a personal loan for $1,000. That was a huge sum of money at the time, and these men took quite a chance. To understand the difference in today’s dollars, $22 would buy a full load of groceries in 1967, compared to the same amount costing about $350 today. Fortunately, the car show was a spectacular success, and they have been hosting it ever since. From the beginning, they have donated all the proceeds from every car show to local charities, the club’s way of giving back to the community they love. The car club’s annual Majestics Car Show held very April has grown and evolved each year. In April of this year, the 52 different categories included hot rod, custom, antique, motorcycles and race cars. They don’t exclude anyone, but the vehicles entered must be out-of-the-ordinary to qualify for the show. Today, the club has 26 members who remain committed to their charitable efforts, as well as a large contingency of honourary members made up of past members and friends of the club. The club is an educational sponsor for apprentices, participates in regular blood drives and charitable initiatives for seniors, and members man the kettles for the Salvation Army and the Regina Humane Society during the Christmas season. Registered as non-profit organization under the Societies Act, the club donates all monies they raise at charitable events. If they are unable to provide funds to a charity, they will provide labour, such as their partnership with Thom Collegiate in building four homes and one ready-to-move home for families in need. The club now requires its members to own pre-1973 vehicles to qualify for membership. Jason Biskupek and Kent Zummack, current members whose fathers were once in the club, are excited to bring the Majestics Car Club into the next generation. They were pleased to support KidSport with the $10,000 proceeds from the annual car show in both 2011 and 2012. The club would like to thank Regina and Saskatchewan for many years of support, and looks forward to providing Regina and area with many more outstanding car shows. FLR

Technicians at the shop will not advise customers that they need anything that is not required. “I don’t try to ‘upsell’, or try to tell customers they need unnecessary repairs. That’s dishonest, and I wouldn’t want to be treated like that if I were a customer. I believe in treating others as I would want to be treated. Some people have a negative attitude about the auto repair industry, and unfortunately, sometimes it’s warranted. I am trying
