pring has sprung! This new season brings another anticipated issue of Fine Lifestyles Regina, chock full of stories and information about local businesses ready to serve you. Our front cover is sure to catch your eye. Royal LePage Regina Realty is a progressive real estate company focused on serving their clients and giving back to the community. Among the many creative ways they fundraise is their weekly Soup for Shelter event. This is a business that understands how philanthropy makes our city and region a better place to live. Regina hosts many wonderful events throughout the year, and we recap a few recent ones. Canadian music legend, Tom Cochrane took time out from his tour to discuss his latest album and musical career with Fine Lifestyles. Cirque Du Soleil brought its fabulous Dralion show to Regina in December, and it was jaw-dropping to get behind the scenes early on opening day. SaskMusic and Creative Saskatchewan teamed up to bring in renowned live music producer, Tom Jackson and his team from Nashville, Tennessee for a weekend in January to groom many of our talented Saskatchewan musical artists. This issue’s Community Spotlight shines on Prairie Sky School. Scott McGillivray brings practical renovation advice and Ken Beattie takes us cruising in the ancient Maya. We’re sure you’ll enjoy our new Social Pages, profiling some notable charitable events. Once again, Fine Lifestyles Regina keeps the focus local and provides another snapshot of the abundance our community has to offer.

F
or more than 40 years, Manolo Blahnik has been designing sophisticated shoes that are a synthesis of creativity and comfort rarely found in fashionable footwear. Largely responsible for bringing stilettos back into fashion during the platform days of the 1970s, Manolo Blahnik fabricated expensive but elegant shoes, which remained the exclusive knowledge of an elite group of European consumers until the 1990s. Then frequent mention of the coveted footwear on the British comedic sitcom Absolutely Fabulous (1992-2012) and the American television series Sex and the City (1998-2004) brought the now iconic brand to the attention of women all over the world. In 1970, the fledgling designer and avid film fanatic was encouraged by American Vogue editor Diana Vreeland to concentrate his immense talents on fashioning footwear. With no formal training in shoe design or construction, Blahnik set out to learn all he could by watching and working alongside manufacturers. To this day, the always impeccably attired artist carves the prototypes for each of his shoes first by machine and then by hand with a chisel, making sure that the symmetry and balance are just right to achieve maximum comfort. According to Blahnik, a perfectly balanced stiletto enables the alignment of the ankles and hips, resulting in a graceful and attractive sway of the body. In addition to being remarkably comfortable, Blahnik’s shoes are known for their wonderful shapes, fearless use of colour and intricate embroidery, not to mention their incredible array of embellishments, ranging from the fun and quixotic to the elegant and refined. Often referred to simply as ‘Manolos’ or ‘Blahniks,’ every one of the shoes fashioned by this Spanish-Czech designer has its own distinctive personality and is created with a particular type of woman in mind.
S& ABLE By Tonya Lambert
The long-time resident of Bath, England, says his ideas often come to him while he is sleeping or as he is waking up. Inspired by a myriad of different things, Blahnik is heavily influenced by his lifelong passion for the fabrics and fashions of the 18th century. Excellent examples from his current collection include the maroon and bronze brocade Locka BB pumps with maroon and green tassels as well as the intricate floral lace cutouts of the Bricamina ankle boots. Another key source of inspiration for Blahnik is the rounded forms and flowing lines of the artwork of modernist British sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Such fluid forms grace a number of the pumps in his most recent collection, including the Ansota, Letrino, Tangeri and Traspuespo. Over the years, Blahnik has collaborated with many well-known fashion designers, such as Oscar de la Renta and Christian Dior. Nevertheless, Blahnik himself is not a follower of fashion and does not keep abreast of current style trends. He believes that changes in fashion should evolve slowly rather than drastically each year. His shoes are handmade from top quality materials and are meant to last for years, even decades, rather than just a season. Blahnik designs each and every one of the men’s and ladies’ shoes produced under the Manolo Blahnik label. Manufactured in six factories in Italy, these pricey but pretty shoes and boots are available in more than 250 stores in 28 countries worldwide, including the firm’s flagship store on Old Church Street in the Chelsea district of London. Once described by Madonna as being ‘better than sex,’ the acquisition of a pair of these sophisticated shoes is the dream of many women the world over.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
The three pounds of grey matter between your ears is your most valuable possession. Whether you want to be healthier, more productive or have less stress, your brain will determine if you reach your goal. Why is that?
Y
our brain is the starting point for everything you want to do, be or have in your life. According to Terry Small, also known as The Brain Guy, your brain’s first priority is to be safe and comfortable. That means your brain wants what it had yesterday, what it deems to be normal and comfortable. Like being dragged out of a sweet dream while curled up in a feather duvet, your brain desperately wants to hold on to that cozy, comfy feeling any time you want to make a change. For example, if you want to start a new exercise routine, your brain will most likely respond with resistance in the form of thoughts like “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “I’m so tired!” Research proves we can direct changes in our brains through a process called self-directed neuroplasticity. To simplify, think of your brain like a computer: it handles information based on its current programs to produce the results you see in your life.
You can choose to reprogram your brain by selecting and maintaining focus on thoughts that better serve you until they become habitual. Habits of thought that don’t serve you are as damaging to your progress as a virus is to your computer. Though these “thought viruses” may be disguised as normal and harmless, they can easily sabotage your best intentions.
The first step in protecting yourself from a “thought virus” is to recognize it. When you wake up early to start that new exercise routine and your brain says, “Not today, I’m too tired,” that is a thought virus. Next, reveal the cost of that virus. In this case it might be, “I’m not working out consistently and that negatively impacts my health.” Finally, reprogram your brain with a better thought such as, “My goal is to exercise three times every week and I’m sticking to it.”
productive habits, high performance is a predictable outcome. Getting started on building new, healthy habits can be frustrating and difficult. Remember, that is your brain being uncomfortable and resisting the change you want to make. As you keep at it, you will create momentum and soon find the new habit as deeply entrenched as the old one once was.
Consistently following this three-step process — recognize, reveal, reprogram — will activate the brain’s self-directed neuroplasticity and create a new, habitual thought that supports your goals. And it’s those habitual thoughts that can make you or break you. Every goal can be broken down into a habit or series of habits that must be maintained and built upon in order to reach the chosen destination. It’s those small, daily steps that eventually lead to success. This is why top performers focus on doing the most important things on a consistent basis. The best salespeople are contacting prospects every day. The best athletes have a regular workout routine and stick to it religiously. The same principle applies to top performers in virtually any field. When concentrating on continually practising

ody Fuel Organics combines the feel of a traditional grocery store with a wide selection of healthprofiled products and organically certified produce. They are also the first online grocery store in Saskatchewan, offering their clientele the opportunity to shop online with the choice of having their groceries delivered directly to their home or be picked up in store. The idea for Body Fuel Organics came from personal need. When owner Lana Van Dijk’s oldest daughter was ill, a naturopath suggested an organic diet; making the switch in food turned her health around for the better. With a busy
family life, Van Dijk had to find a better way to shop, and decided to order produce in bulk and organize it into bins for friends and neighbours to pick up. Starting from these humble beginnings, the business has grown exponentially to serve the entire city of Regina and surrounding areas. Body Fuel Organics is still known for their bins, which are carefully curated to make your shopping experience easy. Their bins range in price and selection from organic fruits, vegetables and grocery or meat bins to meal-specific bins. Entertaining themes include the “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner” bin (which contains everything you need to make a chicken dinner), “We
Think for You” and “The Dirty Dozen” (focused on the organic alternative to the most harmful conventionally grown produce items). There are also paleo bins, juicer bins and one for the common produce everyone knows how to cook called the “Bordering on Boring” bin. They even have a Game Day bin that contains healthy snacks to enjoy while watching a Roughriders game! Because their clients often pre-order, Body Fuel Organics is able to reduce waste by knowing how much of every item they will need. “I always think about the impact of packaging and the carbon footprint of bringing the food to us,” Van

Dijk explains. “We try to source as much locally as possible, and our bin system helps in achieving that.” After moving into a new 4,500 sq. ft. location in December in the Eastview subdivision of Regina, Body Fuel Organics has expanded while still embracing their individual personality. They even have space in the back to host special interest classes, including topics such as how to sprout and culture foods. Body Fuel is the only organic grocery store in town that is open seven days a week for in-store shopping and 24/7 for online shopping. With the expansion, Body Fuel also opened several new routes to deliver bins in and around Regina, as well as drop-offs to the communities of Estevan, Weyburn and Radville. With interest expressed from Lumsden, Regina Beach and Pense, there is more to come. “I’ve met so many fantastic people through Body Fuel,” Van Dijk says. “It’s really amazing to be a hub of quality food and information for people, and help them unlock an idea of how to improve their lifestyle. We have amazing customers, and we try to provide something for everyone, whether it’s an easier solution to shopping, items to kickstart a healthier lifestyle, or simply offering that small town “community feel” in the city. We provide the personal touch through our services to help people feel happy and well.” Body Fuel Organics 1125A McDonald Street, Regina 306.352.3835 bin@bodyfuelorganics.ca www.bodyfuelorganics.ca

The June Report Card

ooking ahead is natural. For students and parents at this time of year, it means looking ahead to the end of school and summer vacation. Lumped somewhere between those two (though not necessarily looked forward to) is the June report card. The June report card is typically treated as an endpoint. However, the June report is much more than the final say on the school year that just finished. Much like its reporting precursors, the June report card should be viewed as an opportunity

to make academic improvements over the coming months.
summer learning losses and maintains their learning momentum.
Statistically, this is not the case. Research shows that rather than being an opportunity to grow academically, summer break creates a large gap in learning momentum, causing students to suffer academic decline amounting to roughly one month of instruction time.
So what can parents do? Investigate summer learning options for their children now and start communicating the importance of summer learning to their children. If a child’s report card indicates he or she struggles with reading or handing in assignments, these skills will not correct themselves during the next year. Attention should be paid to helping the child over the summer develop the skills he or she is missing.
With two months of school-free time stretched out in front of students, summer is more than a break from academia. It’s an opportunity to make real strides to improve not only grades, but learning routines and habits, study skills, reading comprehension, active thinking abilities, math understanding and application and more.
The good news is summer learning doesn’t have to be full-time. A few hours a week of academic-focused instruction has been shown to be a tremendous help in avoiding summer learning losses.
Simply put, taking two months off in the summer is a practice that increases the chance of students falling behind academically, especially if they are already having difficulty at the end of the school year. Summer is an opportunity to fill in the performance gaps and increase achievement overall.
Instead of reading the June report card and taking a “that’s it for this year” approach, look at the report card as a roadmap to guide where children should focus their energy over the summer break. Use it as a forecasting device to predict a better start in September.
Even students who achieve top grades can benefit by working on schoolwork over the summer to get ahead. If they preview the work for next year, many students find they have more time for sports and other activities throughout the school year.
Since 1984, Oxford Learning has used cognitive learning techniques to help children develop more effective ways of thinking, concentrating, listening and remembering. Oxford Learning has summer programs for students of all ages and grades and helps ignite your child’s interest in learning, not just for one school year, but for a lifetime.
Why not stop disregarding the twomonth educational gap we have every summer? Instead, focus on making learning continual. It’s a win-win situation that helps students avoid

Upon completing her training with the National Laser Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona and a preceptorship with Dr. Will, Dr. Stewart now joins the Midwest team as the new Medical Director of the three locations. “One of the most enjoyable and important aspects of being a physician has been the ability to help people” says Dr. Stewart. “When clients experience non-surgical cosmetic procedures it is humbling to be involved in their transformation and be

able to watch their self-esteem grow.” Midwest’s goal is to provide their customers with a refreshed, natural look. The Midwest Laser Centre specializes in non-invasive cosmetic procedures such as Thermage CPT, Clear+Brilliant, Fraxel:Restore, Botox Cosmetic, Restylane, Juvederm, and Teosyal. The great benefit of non-surgical procedures is the minimal downtime. Most of the treatments offered by the center can be done without taking any time off work. Our experienced staff will guide you through the options and find a treatment plan that suits your needs and timelines.
Midwest Laser Centre will be the first clinic in Saskatchewan to offer the IntimaLase TM and IncontiLase TM; this is a laser vaginal tightening treatment that uses thermal heating to improve intimacy and stress urinary incontinence. The laser treatment performed by Dr. Stewart, has a photo thermal heating effect on collagen in both the vaginal walls and the urethra which causes restructuring and regrowth of the collagen. This results in thickening and tightening of the vaginal walls to improve atrophy and prevent urine loss. This simple, non-surgical, 15 minute, in-office procedure is highly effective, pain free and safe. “Midwest is a medical clinic and we strive to offer advanced treatments that are effective. Having a surgical background has been indispensable in allowing me to achieve great results with injectable treatments. My medical training and understanding of the physics of lasers is critical for offering procedures to treat skin conditions, vascular lesions, and rejuvenation treatments. It is exciting to be able to offer non-surgical gynecology treatments.”

How
3D Printing Could Change the FaCe oF PlastiC surgery By Henny Buffinga
3
D printing is one of the most exciting new technologies to emerge in recent years, most importantly because of the vast implications for almost any industry: manufacturing, shipping, construction, patenting, medicine… the possibilities are seemingly endless. The process works by creating objects one layer at a time, sequentially printing layers of paper, resin, plastic, metal, biomaterial or another material based on a digital scan or model. In medicine, advancements are being made with bio-printing, where the material used in the layering process can consist of skin cells, stem cells or the patient’s own cells, which can create an organ with a lower chance of the patient’s body rejecting it. The $2 billion 3D printing industry is projected to reach $6 billion by 2017, and the field of medicine is welcoming the possibilities of the new technology with successfully printed live tissue and working organs making headlines this year. Plastic surgeons in particular are taking advantage of this new technology in interesting ways. Using 3D printing as an educational tool, surgeons are able to print models of body parts in order to plan complex surgeries. This is the most widely used application of the technology at this time. These precise anatomical models allow a surgical team to evaluate several courses of action before determining the best scenario. The models can serve as a guide to the surgery, where time is critical. Any time saved during surgery means a greater chance at recovery. Another seemingly conventional use of 3D printing is proving invaluable to the cosmetic surgeons. Iranian cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yakub Avsar, for example, is using 3D printing to provide his clients with a more accurate view of themselves and what they would look like post-surgery. Avsar uses this technique with patient’s undergoing a rhinoplasty (nose job) to demonstrate realistic before and after models for his patients. Patients can now see their
20
FineLifestyles

new face from all angles and make a more educated decision on their surgery. 3D printing also holds exciting possibilities for aesthetic improvements for procedures such as breast augmentation. The implants could be designed by the plastic surgeon to fit the patient’s measurements and desired changes. This process would provide a customized implant that would suit the patient’s form perfectly. The costs of 3D technology are still high, not least because of the outlay of materials alone, over and above the technology. However, with 3D printers predicted to become more accessible and affordable in the coming years, it is anticipated the technology will become more widely embraced for the many advantages it can provide surgeons, many of them as of yet unexplored, and with seemingly unlimited possibilities for more visually appealing and safe procedures.

f you’ve got unwanted body hair, tattoos, cellulite or wrinkles, the highly-trained specialists at Bare Envy Laser Treatment Centre can help. The clinic, which opened in August 2013, offers laser treatments for a wide range of issues. Owner Erin Nelson says she opened the business to help people. “I had a lot of laser treatments in my thirties,” says Nelson. “But if I had been able to have those done earlier, I think it really would have helped my self-esteem. I want to make treatments affordable to those who are suffering from similar low selfesteem issues.”

That’s why Bare Envy offers fantastic monthly specials. The clinic has a wide range of clients who come from as far away as the U.S. and Alberta. Many who visit say both the calibre of treatment and affordability are factors in choosing Bare Envy. This includes clients in their teenage years who have been bullied because of excess facial or arm hair, as well as those well into their seventies seeking options to help tighten aging skin. The pain-free laser hair removal has been very popular, especially among men who are selfconscious about excess body hair. Boasting advanced technology, the laser used by Bare Envy disperses heat over a

large area using an in-motion technology. Many say the treatment feels like a hot stone massage. The treatment is 99 per cent effective and must be performed six to 10 times to get rid of hair permanently. Using the same laser machine, Bare Envy removes tattoos by targeting the ink. It shatters the pigment and then the body removes the ink through a natural process. The technology is fairly new and clients have been thrilled with the results. Depending on the number of treatments given, the tattoo can be lightened so another can replace it, or it can be removed completely.

A brand new body contouring machine called the Exilis Elite has just arrived at Bare Envy. Recently approved by Health Canada for use in cellulite reduction, it uses heat to damage fat cells. The body recognizes that cells are damaged and flushes them out of the system. “People can lose from two to eight inches around the waist and we can perform treatments under the arms or whereever your trouble areas are,” says Nelson. Another popular treatment at Bare Envy is the Laser 360 with a combination of Clearlift and photo rejuvenation treatments. By recreating collagen, the treatment can minimize fine lines and

Client Jennifer Nakonechny says, “I cannot say enough how satisfied I am with the Laser 360 treatments I’ve had at Bare Envy. Erin and the staff were extremely professional and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend any of their services to my friends and family.” Seeing people get good results and feel happy about themselves when they leave Bare Envy is fulfilling for Nelson and her staff. ADVICE FROM YOUR OPTOMETRIST Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging in Eye Care
Dr. Myles Bokinac owner / optometrist Advance Eye Care Center 500-4010 Pasqua Street, Regina 306.586.7036 www.advanceeyecarecenter.ca
O
ptical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging technology with growing applications in eye care. OCT is similar to an ultrasound in that this device takes multiple high resolution cross-sectional non-invasive scans of a particular tissue. However, OCT uses light rather than sound to take these crosssections. The technology is quite versatile and can be used to gain additional eye health information that may otherwise be difficult or impossible to assess. There are several common uses of the OCT in everyday practice. First, OCT can be used in assessing the
optic nerve for signs of glaucoma. The assessment takes 400 crosssectional images of the optic nerve in a matter of seconds. It then builds a 3D model of the nerve and takes multiple measurements of the nerve tissues in micro-meters. This allows for monitoring of even very minor structural changes. When assessing a patient for glaucoma, there are many different things to evaluate, including the optic nerves, the pressure inside the eye, the side vision and corneal thickness. One of the biggest indicators of glaucoma is a change from one visit to another in any of these parameters. OCT gives very precise measurements of the optic nerve parameters, which allows accurate monitoring for any changes to detect and diagnose glaucoma as early as possible. Secondly, OCT can be used for assessing the macula. The macula is the central part of our retina responsible for 20/20 vision. This is the part of the eye affected by macular degeneration (AMD). The OCT is useful in managing and monitoring patients with the dry form of AMD; the OCT gives multiple retinal thickness measurements which can be used to assess the progression over time. In addition, the OCT images the layer below the retina where the wet form of AMD begins. Wet AMD causes most cases of severe vision loss associated with AMD. Fortunately, effective treatments are available for wet AMD when initiated as early as possible. In some cases, particularly
in occult types of wet AMD, the OCT can diagnose the wet AMD earlier than conventional assessment or even the previous standard test called fluorescein angiography.1 The OCT is also very useful in patients with diabetes; it assesses the macula for swelling — one of the common ocular complications of diabetes. OCT allows precise thickness measurements of the retina and also allows viewing of the location and size of the fluid area buildup. Arrangements can then be made to administer treatment and monitor its effectiveness. OCT is a new versatile non-invasive tool that has become a powerful addition to a routine eye examination when it is needed or indicated. The future will likely continue to bring additional uses for the OCT. For example, researchers are currently studying the use of OCT in measuring retinal ganglion cells to see how this may help in diagnosing or monitoring the progression of multiple sclerosis. The retinal nerve cells are projections of nerve fibres of the brain, so this may provide some amazing insights into this or other nerve/neurological diseases. Time will tell. Book an appointment today at 306.586.7036 to find out if this test is right for you. Advance Eye Care Center — Care... It’s What We Do. References 1. Spectral Domain Practical Guide. Decosta S et al. It’s important to update your skin care regime with seasonal changes. I would suggest a heavier cream containing hyaluronic acid to encourage moisture retention, or a cream containing vitamin C (to be applied before bed) to lock in hydration and provide repair to dry or dehydrated skin. A light hydrating cream is great during the day, followed by sunscreen — even in the winter. Avoid creams or makeup with mineral oil that prevents the skin from breathing, or products that contain alcohol that will dry out your skin! Behind the Scenes at Cirque Du Soleil’s
Dralion By Sherry Lee
From December 10 to 14, 2014, Cirque Du Soleil’s Dralion entertained and amazed audiences in Regina. Inspired by ancient Chinese acrobatic arts and Eastern philosophy’s harmony between man and nature, the show was named for the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. Not surprisingly, half the performing cast was from China. ABOVE: Dralion, photo Daniel Desmarais

ased out of Montreal, Quebec, Cirque Du Soleil has gained worldwide recognition, whether under the big top, in an arena or in a Las Vegas venue. As of last December, Cirque had 19 different shows running around the world, including Dralion — each with its own touring company and each quite different from the other. Julie Desmarais, Dralion’s touring publicist for the past four years says, “It’s just magic… it’s the lighting, the music, the sound, the art talent on stage… a combination.” The performers themselves are a main ingredient in the Cirque recipe, recruited through auditions and scouting. “Cirque Du Soleil combines different forms of arts — acrobats, athletes, actors, clowns, musicians, singers; they come from different backgrounds,” says Desmarais. Some shows even include former Olympians. Dralion’s cast ranged in age from 20 to 50, and while many languages are represented, English is Cirque’s working language. Training and warmups before a show are critical, and so is safety. “We always make sure we can perform in a safe environment. Our crew makes sure the stage is set up in a safe manner. Performers do constant pre-checks,” adds Desmarais. Desmarais says the arena division was created a few years ago to allow shows to run in locations like Regina. “The idea was to create the same intimacy [as the big top] in an arena. We reworked the acrobatic numbers, the way we load in and out to be able to come to cities that don’t get a chance to see a big top show. We bring Cirque Du Soleil closer.”
FACTS ABOUT DRALION: • • • •
Dralion ran under the big top for 11 years before being restaged for the arena. Says Desmarais: “We use only half the arena so we can have an intimacy between the performers and the audience.” The show wound up in Alaska in late January 2015 after a 15year run of 5,000 shows through 150 cities in 30 countries. Amazingly, as of mid-December 2014, the band leader had never missed a show. Desmarais clearly loves her job: “My best part is when the show ends and I see everyone with a smile leaving the arena, happy with what they’ve seen. That’s my favourite moment.”

ow do a young Canadian university student named Terry Fox and a determined African-American woman named Rosa Parks find themselves in the lyrics of a song written by music legend, Tom Cochrane? According to Cochrane, both Terry Fox and Rosa Parks are the personifications of fearless doggedness that changes situations and impacts lives. Cochrane recalls the day he first heard about Fox and his mission, “It was a rainy day in late August 1980 and the band and I were on tour. We’d been stuck in the tour bus for what seemed like forever and, to be honest, I was feeling very sorry for myself. I was tired and I just wanted to be home with my family. We were driving on the highway approaching Thunder Bay and the traffic was slowing down. I looked out the window to see what was going on and saw this kid running on one leg in the rain and shivering. That did it for me! I wasn’t complaining anymore!” It was the following day that Cochrane heard about what Fox was doing and that he had to cut his run short. “I can’t tell you how much I’ve thought of that image of him running in the rain, running the good race and fighting for freedom from cancer... just as Rosa Parks was fighting for freedom,” he expresses. Take IT Home The song The Ones that I’ve Known is just one of the incredible tracks on Cochrane’s newest album entitled Take it Home. With a classic grass roots, folk rock style, Cochrane relays a theme of inspiration and hope when times get tough.

Another stand-out song is Pink Time, the tale of a long haul truck driver devoted to his wife, who has dementia. “It speaks of how love can manifest itself in so many ways,” remarks Cochrane. “He understands that his wife’s essence is still there, but she’s just on a different plane than him and he accepts her.” There are autobiographical elements to the album as well. A Prayer for Hope stems from a trip to Africa taken by Cochrane when working with the humanitarian organization, World Vision. The song tells the story of a mother dying of AIDS as she prays for her daughter, Hope. The single Diamonds refers to the diamonds on the pages of our memories. Its truly inspiring melody encourages us to savour every aspect of life. makIng a DIfference Humanitarianism is important to Cochrane; he’s shown his support for organizations such as World Vision for many years. “We’ve been sponsoring children since the 1980s, but it was when Terry David Mulligan asked me along on a trip to Africa that I really got to see things firsthand. It was a very humbling experience for me. As an artist, it’s easy because I just show up and do my thing and move on, but the people who work in these organizations face it every day. It’s amazing, the things they do,” he humbly states.
ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT
Cochrane’s philanthropy has also been associated with other worthy causes such as War Child, Amnesty International, Make Poverty History and more. He’s been the recipient of the Canadian Music Industry Humanitarian Award in 2005, Allan Waters Humanitarian Award in 2013 and the Henry H. Knowles Humanitarian Award in 2014. When asked about his charitable work, Cochrane simply replies, “It’s a very seminal part of who I am as an artist and a citizen.” Cochrane continues to touch and inspire his audiences both internationally and at home. His spiritualism, music and charity work have motivated many of us to reach outside our comfort levels and stretch ourselves to grow and become better. Tom Jackson’s Live Music Method Drawing Back the Curtain on Live Performance By Sherry Lee Photos courtesy SaskMusic
When it comes to great live performances, renowned live music producer Tom Jackson has a formula that works. Critical to that formula is knowing what an audience wants: to be captured and engaged, to experience moments and to be changed. ABOVE: Jackson hones Jeffery Straker’s delivery

ased out of Nashville, Tennessee, Jackson, along with team members, Amy Wolter and Lang Bliss, spent the weekend of January 24-25 teaching Jackson’s Live Music Method at the Regina Sound Stage. The workshop was free to all Saskatchewan artists, thanks to a partnership between SaskMusic and Creative Saskatchewan. During his many years of playing music and touring, Jackson had some “ah ha” moments — one of which occurred on a night when their band played terribly, yet received a standing ovation. “I realized it wasn’t because of the music,” Jackson says. “I started to look at things from the audience’s perspective.” About 25 years ago, Jackson decided to leave the road, but also knew he wanted to stay in music. “I realized the thing I understood the best and had a passion for was live performance,” he says. Since then, he’s worked with hundreds of artists around the world, including the likes of Taylor Swift and Canadian band, MAGIC! Says Jackson: “I understood and had compassion for the musician. My desire to help artists drove me to draw back the curtain, but it’s not rocket science, either. Songs are unbelievably important, but it’s not just about the song. It’s about the delivery and dynamics of the song; it’s about the moments and the emotion inside the song. What do we have to do so the audience gets it?” “I look at myself like a marriage counsellor. The artist on stage is the husband and the audience is the wife,” Jackson chuckles. “Artists can’t understand why their career isn’t succeeding or why they’re not selling a lot of merchandise. If you create moments, people want to buy those moments to recreate them. Do this and your merchandise sales will go up.”
The talented threesome worked with various musicians during the weekend in front of a captive audience, achieving instant and amazing improvements. But, says Jackson, “That’s where rehearsal comes in. You’ve got to do it over and over, so you are comfortable with it. Then you own it. Then we can raise it to the next level.” According to Jackson, the artist Prince once locked himself up for six days just to learn how to use the mike stand.
confidence so they will take more risks. “I want them to realize this is just the beginning, not the end of learning. This is a method… a whole different mindset… understanding why we’re doing what we’re doing. You actually have to do some studying and do some work. Conceptually, there are a lot of simple things, but they’re not easy to pull off. It’s a process. It’s always something you can get better at.”

Jackson’s Live Music Method incorporates a variety of elements with the desired bottom line: “what is it that keeps the integrity of who you are while still entertaining the audience and keeping them captured and engaged?” This includes the playlist which Jackson calls a “recipe, a journey, a script. We want people singing along, crying. It’s written into the show; the audience is waiting for it.”

Gone are the dated RVs and cramped caravans of yesteryear. Today’s RVs boast innovative luxuries that make travelling the road both pleasurable and elegant. Featuring everything from quartz countertops to master bedrooms with walk-in closets, you can tour the open road in style. A passion for many, motorcycling is a hobby that can be just as luxurious. Take your speed to the next level with bikes that boast amazing craftsmanship. Take the $3.6 million Ecosse ES1 Superbike, for example. Made-to-order, this machine will surpass your wildest dreams.
Priced at $3.6million, the ES1 is the world’s lightest, fastest, best-handling superbike, weighing only 265 lbs.

Magic & Mystery OF THE
ANCIENT MAYA By K.A. Beattie Photos Courtesy of Oceania Cruises
The Mayan civilization is for the most part associated with the spectacular circular calendar, astronomy and, we can’t forget, the sacrifices so embellished by Hollywood. Quite honestly, I had no idea of the extent of the Mayan civilization and the incredible accomplishments that resulted from such a civilized, artistic, hardworking, industrious society. 48

he association of plants and spirituality as medicines in the Mayan culture was very strong and still exists to this day. There is a cultural reverence for ancestral knowledge and a deep appreciation for what Mother Nature continues to provide. A visit to a local market in Santo Tomas, Guatemala will reveal first hand what the local population considers “plant medicine. Granted, there are a great many uncommon looking specimens, packages and bundles of strange foliage, roots and bark bits from peculiar trees, but all very familiar to the still vibrant Mayan population.
Mexico, Santo Tomas, Guatemala, Belize City, Belize and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica wove an intriguing cultural fabric, bringing to life the ancient Maya culture reflecting today’s society as well. Fascinating discussions and tours with local guides through ruins, rain forests, back roads and beaches left us tired, but chocked full of new information and more questions.

Oceania’s Regatta is a marvelous “small ship” and one of our favourites for many reasons. Every time we see them, our stateroom staff greet us with enormous smiles and a genuine salutations, not simply the mantra of so many North American retail staff: “Have a nice day!” Each staff person proudly wears a metal nametag stating his or her first name and home country — it’s a great conversation starter. In the grand dining room, we are most comfortable dressing in country club casual clothes for the evening meal, such as a golf shirt and long dress trousers. There is no need to pack formal or fancy

evening wear — unless you prefer to do so. There are also no prescribed dining times. You can eat dinner when you wish between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.. Alternatively, the buffet at the rear of the ship provides a similar menu, and you can dine alfresco if desired. Failing all of that, perhaps after a long day of jungle trudging, rooms service in the stateroom allows you to dine in whatever you please, put in a movie or DVD, and just chill. Consider joining us this October as we sail with Oceania from Istanbul to Dubai, and thereafter on to India, Madagascar and South Africa. For the time of your life, simply contact a travel agent or Oceania Cruises yourself and see what the world has to offer.

Opening day of new location
GrowinG and BuildinG This dynamic and growing business was purchased in 2002 by a group of partners including Duggleby and Ron Pfeifer. As Royal LePage Regina has grown over the years, so has the need for an expanded facility. With approximately 67 sales associates plus support staff, their original location at 812 Victoria Avenue East was no longer meeting the needs of the agents or their clients. A new building was required. In 2011, the business opened its doors at 3889 Arcola Avenue East. This striking new building was specifically designed to enhance teamwork among agents while creating a comfortable and professional environment to meet with clients. “We wanted to make sure the ‘flow’ of the building worked well with what we do so we’ve tried to create spaces where conversations can be had,” states Duggleby. The structure offers main floor meeting rooms where those conversations can take place. Both rooms are equipped with the audio/
visual technology needed to assist clients in their search. The decision to move to the east part of the city was another conscious one. The team could see the growth occurring there and the associated opportunities. “Eventually the Highway 1 bypass is going to create a bit of a ‘hard edge’ for the city and we’ll be well inside that,” Duggleby notes.

The riGhT PeoPle for The JoB When they first purchased the business, the partners noted a lot of the people in the office were approaching the end of their career. A conscious effort was made to seek out more people in their mid-20s to early 30s. Duggleby explains there were a couple of strong reasons for this recruitment strategy. First, when you get someone young, you have the opportunity to work with

that trust is vital and often goes beyond business and moulds into a lasting friendship,” comments Duggleby. There are many technical elements that go into buying a home, such as creating contracts to protect everyone, but it should be more about building that business relationship and friendship, says Duggleby. “We look for people with the social skills and mindset needed to establish trusting long-term relationships with their clients.”
them for a long time. This provides more opportunity for mentorship. Second, the partners felt they needed the energy and innovation that often accompanies youth. With an average age of about 37, the Royal LePage Regina office is relatively young, but also quite varied. Within the office are people who have grown up in rural and urban areas as well as some who have moved to Regina from other places. “There are no ‘cookie cutter’ style agents here; we are from a lot of different backgrounds which helps us serve a diverse clientele,” Duggleby says. and serving a variety of people and ethnic cultures. By offering service in approximately 13 different languages, the team at Royal LePage is better able to meet the needs of a broader scope of homebuyers and sellers. Royal LePage Regina stresses the importance of their team members being out in the community. This is a strong method of relationship-building and encourages agents to be well-rounded in their business and personal lives. Once people get to know the individual agent and understand what they do for a living, they are more likely to reach out to them when they need help buying and/or selling their home. Many Royal LePage Regina agents are involved in a number of community activities such as sports, the arts, volunteerism and more. As a REALTOR®, being comfortable with being outgoing and friendly is part of who you are, Duggleby emphasizes.
GivinG Back Not only is it important to the team at Royal LePage to be involved in personal community endeavours, philanthropic participation is strongly emphasized at the personal and corporate levels. On a national level, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is dedicated to assisting women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Since 1998, the Shelter Foundation has raised more than $18 million nationally and is Canada’s largest public foundation of this sort. According to Duggleby, 100 per cent of monies raised through the Foundation goes back into the communities where they were raised. Locally, the Shelter Foundation supports the YWCA’s Isabella Johnson Shelter and Sofia House. Three primary fundraising initiatives take place: 1. Donations are made individually by agents as they give a portion of their commissions. 2. Soup for Shelter is a weekly event that began locally about two years ago. The office hosts a soup lunch and invites agents to stop by, make a donation and enjoy some food and fellowship. 3. The Royal LePage Garage Sale originated in Regina about 15 years ago. This annual fundraiser is now a national event that raises thousands of dollars for local shelters. Giving back to the community is a big part of what Royal LePage stands for. “We want to make the community we live and work in a better place for our friends, clients, neighbours and families,” adds Duggleby. As Royal LePage Regina moves forward, the team remains dedicated to offering high quality customer service to its clients and the community.

Customer Focused Service Since 2009, Whitrow has worked diligently to establish a reputation of integrity and excellence. “I run a very customer focused business,” he says. “I will go out of my way to ensure my clients’ best interests come first, even if that means we have to walk away from a sale because it doesn’t look good for them.” For Whitrow, it’s all about learning about his clients’ needs and wants and helping

them find a home they can fall in love with. One of the tools he uses to assist in this process is an automated MLS search. “The same day a new listing comes on the market matching their criteria it gets emailed to the homebuyer. We then filter the ones that show the best potential and take a closer look.” Whitrow clarifies his role as a REALTOR®. “I coach my clients throughout the buying and selling processes. homes; it usually means I can get my clients a smoking deal,” he quips, then explains, “Really it’s about looking at the foundation, the roof, the layout and being aware of potential issues now rather than being surprised later. When selling, it’s important to stay aggressive about a home’s ‘sale-ablilty.’ This goes beyond focusing on price; it means also using a professional photographer and making sure the home is presented in a way that is going to grab a buyer’s attention.” Exciting New Developments Presently, Whitrow is involved in some exciting new developments in Harbour Landing. These striking two and three bedroom units include the option of completing the basement for added living space. Ideal for first time homeowners or empty-nesters, these attractive homes can be purchased for under $300,000. Part of a Winning Team Whitrow is pleased to be part of the Royal LePage team. “It is truly a team environment and that’s almost unusual in real estate. I appreciate the support we get from our brokers. If we have any questions it’s nice to know there’s someone who’s been through it and willing to share their wisdom.” Moving forward, Whitrow continues to serve his clients with the respect and honesty he has become known for.

PrePare, PrePare, PrePare A detailed renovation plan will help keep you on budget and on time. Set out a specific agreement with your contractor before the work begins. You should be able to see on paper how your renovation is going to play out before it ever begins. Don’t jumP the gun on Purchases Don’t buy materials or appliances until you’ve completely planned out your renovation and all measurements have been taken. Online sales can be tempting, but that great deal on a 24-inch dishwasher isn’t going to save you any money if your entire space has to be redesigned because you only had room for an 18-inch model. Work out your timeline Contractor approximations are simply that, so sitting down and working out a detailed timeline before the reno starts will help keep your contractor on track and yourself on budget. Don’t ignore the issues When you pull down walls or rip up floors, there’s a good chance you’re going to be surprised by something you find, especially in an older home. This might mean an unexpected cost up front, but it will save you tons of money in the long run. Don’t cut corners It’s always better to go the extra mile and do it right the first time. Hiring competent people to do the job, buying quality materials, and taking the time to complete all the necessary steps is key.
communicate With your contractor Constant communication is the best way to ensure everything is going as planned. Decisions that affect design, budget or timeline should ultimately be made by you — an open dialogue will help keep surprises to a minimum. use licenseD traDes Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, asbestos removal, anything to do with gas and anything structural should always be completed by a licensed professional in that specific trade. A jack-of-all-trades type can be helpful for basic renos, but saving money by hiring a plumber who’s also willing to do electrical can be a dangerous idea if they aren’t trained, licensed or insured for that line of work. DeciDe on your Diy I love it when I encounter ambitious homeowners who want to get dirty and take part in their renovation. But projects like cabinet installation, complicated tile work or skilled carpentry exceed the limit of a typical DIY project and can reduce the value of your home if done incorrectly. My advice? Enjoy Spring With The Cleanest Windows You’ve Ever Had
O
ne of the best parts of spring is looking out your windows and seeing new blossoms, leafy trees and the sun shining into your yard. Of course, after a long Saskatchewan winter, your home’s windows are likely in need of a good cleaning. The dust and debris caused by outdoor elements builds up each season, making it hard to enjoy the views. But while many household chores simply require a little motivation and elbow grease, window cleaning is one that is always best left to professionals.

But with the expert team at Capital Window Cleaning, you can have sparkling clean, clear windows without risking your safety or wasting your time. Their hand-held, high quality squeegees, extension poles, adjustable step ladders and protective arms for ladders enable them to clean every window of your home perfectly, safely and without causing damage.

How to Convince Your Spouse to Hire a Cleaning Service to put your feet up and relax, but the nagging voice in your head tells you that your bathrooms need scrubbing and the floors are in desperate need of cleaning. Do you dream about being one of your neighbours who has the luxury of coming home to a sparkling clean home because they have hired a cleaning company? Is it a daunting thought to bring the subject up to your spouse? Below are some common objections and how to negotiate your way to a less stressful life.

“We Can’t afford it.” It may be time to take a look at your budget and reassess priorities. It’s easier to relocate funds than add additional expenses. It may be worth giving up the $5 daily latte ($150 per month) to have your home cleaned. Schedule your service to the frequency that fits your budget. “HoW Hard Can it be to keep tHiS Home Clean?” Make a list of everything you do or would like to do when cleaning the home, and split the chores over the next couple of weeks. You may be surprised how much time and energy it takes to keep your home in tip-top shape, and how worthwhile a cleaning service can be. “We are Clean people. our HouSe iS not dirtY.” Dirt and germs hide in areas that are often not touched when we only have a few moments to clean. A professional cleaning service will get areas that you may not have time for. “You WorrY too muCH — juSt relax.” Not everyone has the

same standard of cleaning, but if you are feeling so stressed that you can’t get your house in order, it will affect your relationships with your spouse and children. Imagine the feeling if company pops by and you don’t have to worry if your bathrooms are clean. “i do not like to Have StrangerS in our Home.” With a professional cleaning service, all security measures are taken care of. Any cleaning company you hire should be able to provide you with the hiring practices and insurance coverage. Hire a company that fully trains their employees; people who work for a professional cleaning company need to be professional trained. Ask if the company is covered by insurance, Workers Compensation Board, and bonded. This ensures the employees are insured against accidents, crime and any other liabilities while in your home. This provides peace of mind you can’t get from hiring a “friend of a friend.” “it iS a luxurY We don’t need.” The time has come to hire a cleaning service as a necessity, not a luxury. Unlike going out for dinner and a movie (often the same cost as a cleaning), cleaning helps preserve the health of your home and family. A cleaning service will free up more time to spend together as a family. Still not convinced? Try a cleaning service one time and experience the feeling you and your spouse will have when walking into a clean home. This may truly demonstrate the value of hiring a professional cleaning company.

An ElEgAnt Solution To A Common Problem Re-surfacing with premium rubber from recycled tires creates a product that is better-than-new and supports sustainable industry. By Kevin Hall Photos courtesy of Shercom Industries
P
erhaps you have already seen one of the many surfaces that have been restored and improved by Shercom Industries or one of its installation partners. You may already know how they use nearly 20 years of experience in rubber surfacing to apply a wide variety of colour and style options to make your driveway, patio or pool deck into a beautiful new space — one you are proud to show off and happy to spend time on.

Have you have been looking at a cracked, crumbling or uneven surface at home or work? Do you wonder if there is a better, smarter way to give a facelift without tearing up the old surface at considerable expense and hoping the new one is magically more durable? There is a better way. Your old surface doesn’t need to die, it just needs to be re-tired. Rubber paving made from

recycled tires is a beautiful, affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to a major replacement project or another ineffective patch job. The unique properties of the flexible rubber surface that make it great to walk on (such as improved traction when wet or icy) have resulted in the technology being developed for many applications in our communities: recycled rubber is

used in several local running tracks, falldampening playground surfaces and around pool decks. You can imagine how much more forgiving the rubber surface is when a poolside slip would have otherwise resulted in an injury or a shattered margarita glass! In recent years, Shercom Industries, pioneers in the development of rubber paving in Canada and now working with licensed installers across the country and internationally, has seen a significant rise in the awareness and purchases of rubber-paved surfaces. “The growing popularity of rubber paving is due, in part, to the social conscience of consumers and community stakeholders,” explains Kevin Hall, director of business development for Shercom. “Our customers are excited to learn about our fully-integrated model, where tires are recycled here in Saskatchewan and turned into something useful and interesting like rubber paving. The average driveway uses rubber from close to 200 tires, so each of our customers help make a significant environmental impact.” He continues: “The real driver of our success, and the key to our industry’s sustainability, is the fact that rubber paving is a fantastic product in its own right. A luxury custom pool deck or a new seamless driveway and sidewalk for your home is often more affordable than the alternatives, carries a longer life expectancy and is installed in a single day, which minimizes your inconvenience.” So before you attack your driveway or backyard patio with a jack-hammer or a back-hoe, you may want to check out the many benefits of rubber paving and the ways it can add value to your home and lifestyle while doing something great for our environment. Get Inspired to Create Your Dream Outdoor Living Space By Melanie Furlong Photos courtesy The Rusty Shovel

f you’re dreaming of a backyard where you can entertain your friends, relax and enjoy your family, but don’t know where to start, visit The Rusty Shovel Landscape Shop and spark your imagination. This season, the store will offer clients even more possibilities; they are now partnering with North America’s largest supplier of hardscape products, Belgard Hardscapes. New to western Canada, Belgard has established manufacturing capabilities from Manitoba through to British Columbia. The Rusty Shovel is co-owned by Sean Stefan and his wife, Katlyn. They recently took over from Stefan’s uncle, Steve

Kesslering, who co-founded the company. Stefan says they are excited about Belgard’s innovation, product line and selection. Their beautiful, high-quality materials — which all have transferrable, lifetime warranties — will give clients much more choice in walkways, driveways, pool decks, patios and retaining walls and steps.
In particular, The Rusty Shovel’s clients will be interested in Belgard’s Elements line. This series of pre-fabricated, modular products for outdoor living includes water features, fireplaces, fire pits, wood boxes, pizza ovens and outdoor kitchens, all of which make great focal points for your outdoor living space.
“The key foundations to hardscapes are colours, textures and shapes,” says Stefan. “Belgard has a variety of different products that suit modern, traditional and contemporary styles. There’s a product and colouring to complement your interior colours and make your indoor and outdoor styles work in unison.”
Conveniently, clients can see exactly how their home would look using Belgard’s products with their product visualizers. “We can take a photo of a house,” says Stefan, “then overlay the product on the walkway or driveway to give homeowners an idea of what it would look like against their house.”
HOUSE & HOME
The Rusty Shovel also offers onsite consultations with their landscape designers who will talk to clients about the style and functionality they want and then come up with either a simple sketch for their outdoor space or a 2-D or 3-D computerized design so they can visualize the property. Helping clients reach their end goal is the most fulfilling part of Stefan’s job. The store, which is a supplier to both professional contractors and “DIYers,” takes pride in offering clients the quality advice and products they need to make their visions a reality. “We give DIYers the support and know-how to do things themselves,” he says. “People always tell me how helpful my staff members are because they go the extra mile and really make sure people know what they’re getting into at the beginning of a project.” The Rusty Shovel’s customer support starts at the design stage and is carried through pricing, construction and completion. “We love it when our customers come back to us with photos and show us what we helped them accomplish,” says Stefan. “It’s our biggest satisfaction.” BOTTOM L–R Sean Stefan and Steve Kesslering

“More than ever, window coverings are becoming a statement in the modern home,” says Andria Kainz, owner. “Everyone wants to be able to showcase something creative and unique — Shademaker can help you do just that. As a window covering stylist and educator, I welcome the opportunity to work on unique projects.”

“Everyone wants to be able to showcase something creative and unique — Shademaker can help you do just that.” ~Andria Kainz WHY DOES SHADEMAKER COME TO YOU? Client Convenience: Picking colours for your space is hard, but trying to pick colours in a store rather than your home is even harder. Making trips back and forth to the store to try samples (if you can get them) can be very frustrating. It’s the long, hard way to do it. Nowadays, a window covering professional can bring everything you’d look at in a store right to your home. This enables you to test the fabrics in your own space with the assistance of a professional right there with you providing advice and feedback. It’s beyond easy; they make the process fun and relaxing! Less Overhead: Having a storefront increases overhead, which in turn increases the amount of markup on any product. Shademaker Blinds is a trusted family owned business with little overhead. Their website is very informative and can be considered a personal storefront as it has a gallery, tips and tons of information at just a click, costing the customer nothing! “Every consultation is complimentary and is of great value to people who are trying to incorporate window coverings into such an important part of the design process,” says Kainz. “It can be a positive experience for both the design consultant and you, all in the comfort of your own home.” Contact Shademaker Blinds today for more information about adding custom window coverings to your home or office.

Open up Your Living Space with Phantom Screens By Courtney Tait
W
ith summer on the horizon, Saskatchewan homeowners are looking forward to opening up their doors and windows, letting the breeze blow through and enjoying time on their patios after a long winter. But two aspects of summer can inhibit using your outdoor spaces to their full potential: pesky insects and the heat of the afternoon sun. While storm doors and window screens can assist in combatting
these issues when you’re inside, they detract from your views of the outdoors, and offer no protection when you’re on your patio. Fortunately, Canadian company Phantom Screens offers an innovative, stylish option that not only keeps the bugs and sun at bay, but can dramatically increase your home’s living space. The solution? Phantom Retractable Screens. These motorized screens merge your indoor and outdoor spaces, opening up your
home and extending the amount of time you can spend on your patio. Because Phantom Screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, they stay completely hidden when fully retracted. This provides optimal views, enhances the flow and function of your home and promotes the outdoor living experience. Phantom Screens offers three different product lines — for windows, doors and large openings such as covered

decks or garages. Each screen is fully customizable, so you can have it fitted to the exact style and dimensions needed for your home. The screen doors can mount on any kind of door opening, including outswing/inswing and French doors. But unlike regular screen or storm doors, these retract completely when not in use. “It provides a lot of air flow when you can keep your doors open in the summer,” says Phantom Screens local distributor Randy Aramenko, who has been serving Saskatchewan since 1995. “It’s also cost effective, because you use less air conditioning.” Phantom Screens’ executive power screen can be built up to 25 ft. wide and
16 ft. tall. This is ideal for covered decks or outdoor kitchens, enabling you to enjoy your outdoor space with or without protection as needed. The power screen is also compatible with folding doors — an excellent alternative to sliding doors, as they can open up an entire wall to the outdoors. Phantom Retractable Screens can be blended into almost any architectural style. Custom colours and wood grain finishes merge the screens with a homes’ particular colour scheme, so they don’t detract from your decor, but rather flow seamlessly with it. Have a home automation system? Phantom Screens can be connected, so they come down at

specific times of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. You can view product options at phantomscreens.com. “We install hundreds of retractable screens throughout Saskatchewan each year,” says Randy. “Every time we finish the installation and our clients use the screen, we get to see their response to the ‘wow’ factor. A
PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD By Brook Thalgott
Today, businesses face far more risks than in the past, such as business interruption, cash flow and liquidity, reputation, regulatory changes and weak economic climate. Now, businesses face another growing concern — cyber risk. No company, no matter how big, is immune to issues from the virtual world.
86
FineLifestyles
Regina
ccording to the Globe and Mail, cyber attacks have already hit more than one third of Canadian businesses. Gaining access via anything connected to the Internet, these well-funded and sophisticated criminal enterprises will attack businesses of any size and cause serious damage. Because the risk is constantly evolving and the legal system is usually playing catch-up to technology, businesses have to protect themselves from all angles. With smaller businesses (less than 100 people) often the target, it really isn’t the massive multinationals alone that need to worry. An enterprise cyber risk management strategy is a must for any business these days, and senior management needs to be front and centre in planning and implementation. Businesses need to address what exactly is at risk from cyber attacks. It may be customer information, proprietary information on products or services or communications between employees. The big question to ask is what will a hacker find valuable if they get in? Employees need to be educated about their responsibilities in minimizing risk, with a robust policy and compliance guidelines. Internal and external networks need to be assessed on an ongoing basis, with full knowledge of who has access to what and where everything is located. A well-planned and executed cyber risk strategy will help your business become cyber resilient. While we’re often prepared for the traditional business risks, we may neglect the ones that come from our connectivity. However, with a robust, well-planned and executed strategy, cyberspace risks can be mitigated.

am often asked how I have been able to become successful in the variety of business ventures I have undertaken throughout my career. The obvious responses one would expect are ambition, hard work and dedication. Of course, those are all true, but the answer I would provide is much simpler and is the foundation of everything I have ever accomplished. The most valuable investment I have ever made and continue to make is in my education. No matter what I do, no matter how many businesses I own, my education has proven itself an asset that will always find ways to make me money.

The experts out there — the ones in the top of their respective fields — never stop learning. They cannot afford to. They understand the importance of investing in themselves, whether it be through personal development, sharpening previously acquired skills or developing new ones. Education is a surefire way to continue setting the bar higher for yourself, and truly successful people can never have their bar set too high. Why? Because they know that to stay at the top, they must never stop reaching. One of my current sources of education is my business coach, Ray Higdon. Ray teaches a method he refers to as ILT, a method he credits for his vast success in network marketing. ILT — Invest Learn Teach — is a simple yet effective method for reaching unlimited success in your life. The idea is you invest in yourself through education (classroom, coaching, reading,
BUSINESS
webinars and conferences). You then convert that education into action (working toward your objective). Once you have succeeded at your goal, you take that education and experience and share it with others. When you have accomplished what you set out to do, you begin again. How have I applied the “Invest Learn Teach” method to my career? The ILT method has followed me through my career and made it possible for me to not only succeed at several goals and passions, but to also support a lot of people in making a lot of money. My journey really started when I began working in mutual funds. Throughout my career as a certified financial planner, I obtained a wealth of education and experience with regard to investing. When I decided to shift my expertise exclusively into real estate, even though
I was no longer using my previous education or experience the same way, it never ceased to provide me with value. My investment background helped me navigate and speak the new language. It also expedited the steep learning curve in front of me. Once I combined that with my determination and willingness to continue advancing, it did not take me long to succeed. In five short years, my husband and I went from two properties to 302. During that time, we not only learned how to invest in real estate, we learned how to invest in real estate using other people’s money. We became skilled at selecting quality property, managing that property’s needs and providing a profitable rate of return for not only ourselves, but for our investors as well. When I think back to my decision to shift my professional focus to real estate, I can see how far I have come. I have
learned so much since those first few real estate courses. I am more confident. I have more control over my life and that provides me with the freedom I need to start the ascent into the next phase of my development as a wealth coach. Coaching allows me to share the value of my experience with others through group training. Becoming a wealth coach was a viable next step for me because I understand the value of being a good resource. I thrive on educating myself through the same processes. I teach because I learn. Studying wealth, personal development and business has made me fluent in the languages of goal setting and living life through one’s passions. Though I feel I have made tremendous strides, I have never stopped learning. I have never peaked. Once I conquer what I set out to do, I always find ways to keep climbing. I do that through Invest Learn Teach. I invest in myself, I take action with what I learn and I recycle that knowledge and skill into coaching others to do the same. I have found achievement by committing myself to building multiple income streams. I believe when you are
BUSINESS
passionate about something, you should surround yourself with it until it becomes routine. And when that happens, you find something else until you build yourself up to where you want to be. It was my enthusiasm to take on new challenges, educate myself and assume risk that lead to building a real estate portfolio worth more than $30 million. In the past three years alone, I have helped people raise more than $4 million, which led to the purchase of 250 properties worth more than $20 million. And because of that, others have been able to share in our success by investing not only in our real estate, but in the value of my education. That is the perfect example of why Ray’s method works. By investing in myself, I have been able to take action and succeed. That success has made it entirely possible for me to train others on how to, as Ray would say, crush it and dominate in their respective field. If you would like to transform your life and learn how to create another stream of income, connect with me at http:// multiplewaystowealth.com. staff has grown to 53 members in total. “When people walk in, they will be greeted appropriately and there will be no wait times. When you call the dealership, a live person will answer the phone.” The team at Taylor Volkswagen is excited to soon be one of the most environmentally-friendly dealers in Canada. Used oil rags will be disposed of by a company that re-uses and recycles them. Waste oil will be taken to a waste oil plant that burns it for energy. As well, they will be using biodegradable hand soap and floor mats will be made from recycled tires. Ninety per cent of lighting is LED, including all exterior lights on the lot.
“We’re making a big shift,” says Williams. “Our service department is as environmentally-friendly and efficient as possible. When it comes to the mechanical devices, our oil distribution system, fluid distribution and compressor systems are as efficient as it comes. We are hoping to reduce bin disposal by one bin every quarter; it may not sound like a lot, but it all adds up in the big picture. As more and more eco-technology comes to the market, rest assured we will be integrating it as soon and as best we can.” This efficiency is right in line with Volkswagen’s brand of high-performing vehicles. COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Prairie Sky School in the Community
P
By Tobie Hainstock Photos Shawn Fulton & Prairie Sky School
rairie Sky School in Regina operates with a difference. Says principal Corry Moriarty, “We educate children holistically through art, community and nature. Holistically means through our head, heart and hands with a number of activities that really motivate a balanced education.” The school, which opened its doors in fall 2009 with approximately 15 students, is artistically and environmentally focused with emphasis on the Waldorf and Reggio education concepts. The idea is to provide a hands-on approach to learning as opposed to a traditional classroom setting approach. By using art, community and nature as learning tools, children are challenged to seek out solutions and e x p re s s themselves in thoughtful and creative ways.

In the school’s fourth year, the provincial government offered qualified independent schools the opportunity to introduce Saskatchewan curriculum. This meant Prairie Sky School could receive 50 per cent funding from the Ministry of Education, savings which are passed on through tuition. “This is our third year involved in that program and it’s working well, but we still implement our programs with our own inspirations,” comments Moriarty. With about 35 current students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8, the school continues to blossom. If all goes as planned, Prairie Sky School will relocate to be part of the new Orange Tree Village in Harbour Landing by fall 2016, creating a unique multigenerational environment where students share a facility and scheduled times of interaction with seniors.
