DESIGNER IN THE HOUSE By Courtney Tait
When Toronto-based fashion designer Matthew Gallagher was a four-year-old boy in his hometown of Amherst, Nova Scotia, he noticed one day an outfit worn by a customer at his family’s business. “Mom,” he said, “her shoes match her dress.” This early interest in fashion led Gallagher to pursue his passion at just 16 years old, when he completed a pre-college summer program at Parsons The New School For Design and an internship with designer Tracy Reese, both in New York City.

“I
have always been drawn to clothes and art,” says Gallagher, who debuted his womenswear luxury brand — Maison Matthew Gallagher — in 2013. “I like to evoke a feeling with my clothing and allow women to feel excited about what they put on.” Further honing his skills through design school in Milan and work as a costume designer in Milan and Paris, Gallagher returned to Canada, ready to launch his brand. “I was lucky enough to have professors who were still actively working with major brands in the
fashion industry, and the knowledge they could offer was so valuable,” says Gallagher. “From my internships I had a chance to get a closer look at how things functioned in the fashion environment, and it is those experiences I can now draw from in my own business.” Gallagher’s designs feature handselected fabrics imported from small shops in Milan. Inspired by various sources, including his travels, experiences and collections of imagery and articles, each piece is individually handcrafted by the designer in his Toronto studio. “I want to give

women clothing that they can feel sophisticated and luxurious in, yet still stay modern and cool,” says Gallagher. Along with working one-on-one with his clients to ensure quality and fit, Gallagher does everything from pattern making and sewing to managing his social media. “Maison Matthew Gallagher is self-financed and solely run by me at the moment,” says Gallagher. “My day can consist of so many things depending on what is required at any given time.” Gallagher has impressed fashion critics through his collections at Toronto Fashion Week, which have showcased an elegant, polished aesthetic and great attention to detail. His Spring 2014 collection featured long dresses and two-piece sets with pastel hues and clean, flowing lines, evoking summers on the Italian Riveria. “I always design for the same girl, but change the story each season,” says Gallagher. “I like to create fantasy and a lifestyle that you want to be a part of.” So what kind of girl does Gallagher design for? The designer describes the Matthew Gallagher woman as “a powerful being, a woman of luxury and refined allure.” Associate Editor of Elle Canada, Alannah O’Neill, wrote that his womenswear was “fit for highsociety doyennes,” also noting that Gallagher is “a talent to watch.” While his career is in its early stages, Gallagher has already been featured in publications ranging from Flare and The Toronto Star to The Globe and Mail, and appears set to become a well-known fixture in the Canadian fashion world. “The most fulfilling part for me is when people understand what you have envisioned,” says Gallagher. “I love the feeling of seeing a woman totally get my voice and want to be a part of the world I am creating.” Though the worlds he is currently creating focus on womenswear, Gallagher’s plans for the future of his brand include evolution into other areas. The designer says his dream is to create clothing for men, women and children, as well as jewellery, shoes and leather goods. Alongside fashion, he would like to venture into home décor as well as the hotel and restaurant industry. “I would love to have a small, beautiful boutique hotel and restaurant so I could fully realize the MMG world,” says Gallagher. If his ambition, drive and talent are anything to go by, Matthew Gallagher is a name you will be hearing a lot more of. For now, in the light that floods his studio through floor to ceiling windows, the designer continues his work, building his brand one pattern at a time. f there’s one simple trend to follow this fall, it’s that navy is the new black. Two Fifty Two (TFT) Boutique owner, Mackenzie Firby, says the colour will carry your outfit’s look from morning to evening. “Just pair your outfit with silver or gold jewellery,” she says. “It will be a classic look you won’t have to fret over.” TFT Boutique carries high-fashion labels from Diane Von Fürstenberg (DVF) and Cynthia Rowley, to cutting-edge designers like Hunter Bell and Astrid, and everyday wear like Beija Flor and Frame Denim. TFT also offers its customers a private shopping experience. “Bring a group of your family and friends into the store and be treated to a few hours of private and personal shopping inside TFT,” says Firby. “There is no cost to the customer for private shopping parties and we will even supply the refreshments.” Private and personal shopping is about enhancing your natural beauty says Firby. “We have trained stylists who will shop for you and pull fashions that will accentuate your personal style.” When customers contact TFT, stylists will have items ready upon their arrival to ensure that they have the best shopping experience. TFT customers feel pampered by the experience, and for those who aren’t big shoppers — it’s a welcomed relief. For Firby, it’s all about bringing big city shopping to Saskatoon. Brands and looks are brought in from New York and L.A. every week, whether it’s a sleek dress for an evening out or a casual outfit to wear as you run errands. “Black and white are always in,” says Firby. “But colours like olive, merlot and cobalt are also hot this fall.” Labels like DVF, Blaque Label and Botkier all showcase these shades. “Whether you’re wearing jeans or dress pants, pair these colours with a great Vince Scuba leather jacket for a classic yet edgy look. Leather goes with everything.”

Firby attends buying shows in L.A. and New York during fashion season. “I’ll be traveling to NYC again this September. The show I attend has over 1,000 vendors, so it is exciting to find unique and classic styles while also discovering a few hidden gems.” TFT’s buyers handpick every item purchased at these shows based on what their customers are asking for and what has been the top sellers at the boutique. “Often, there are brands which are new to us and catch our eye, and we place an order for them because it’s great to bring in new clothes that aren’t carried in other boutiques,” says Firby. TFT strives to offer its customers looks that aren’t only high-quality and highfashion, but also offer looks that can’t be replicated. “We only bring in a few sizes of each item so our customers can truly be one-of-a-kind and not have what many others in Saskatoon have,” says Firby. “Many of our brands are unique to us as well, so they aren’t going to find them in other boutiques here.” TFT Boutique is open from Monday to Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.. W
hile looking and feeling youthful is deemed a priority in Western culture, there comes a point in most women’s lives when they wonder if what they’re wearing is suitable for their age. Aspects of fashion such as skirt length (too short?), fabric (too clingy?) and patterns (too bold?) can start to make getting dressed more baffling than enjoyable. At The Sandbox, we carry items for women of all ages from brands such as Joseph Ribkoff, which features pieces suitable for women ranging from their 20s to their 60s. Joseph Ribkoff items can be “youngified” or “maturified,” so
finding a look that’s right for your age is easy. Through years of helping women choose the clothes they love to wear, we have gathered this collection of tips to dressing age appropriate. 1. Develop a style that is YOU from the inside out. 2. If that style is feminine, look for fabrics that drape and have some softness. They don’t have to be overly frilly or lacy to be feminine. 3. If your lifestyle is casual, look for fabrics that move easily with your body that are comfortable but great quality so they don’t stretch out and look saggy. 4. Make sure your clothes fit — find a good seamstress and have them altered to your shape. We can’t stress this enough! 5. Consider how versatile a piece is. While an item such as a short colourful dress may seem more suited to your daughter than to you, simply adding a pair of leggings and a wrap can tone the look down and make it feel more comfortable and modest. 6. Jeans are a key staple. For comfort, look for ones with stretch. Make sure you have a few darker jeans in plainer washes (rather than ripped or distressed). These
are dressier and won’t date too quickly. 7. Donate jeans every five to seven years. They will be out of style and likely ageing you. 8. Hem one pair of jeans for flats and another for heels. Wear them with an ankle boot or ballet flat, strappy sandal or a cowboy boot ... whatever is your style! 9. Don’t show off too much skin. Miniskirts and exposing excessive décolletage will make you look like you’re trying too hard. Moderation is classy. 10. Think like a French woman — less clothes, but of higher quality. When you’re 20 and your clothes are the latest trends, they’re more disposable. As you mature you want your clothes to last longer, so look for the best fabrics you can afford. This makes all the difference in how well they wear, wash, and keep their shape and colour. Much of dressing your age is about your body type, attitude and confidence. The most important thing is to wear clothes that makes you feel like your best self. Just because you hit a certain age doesn’t mean you have to change your style: you may just have to tweak it a little so it aligns with the beautiful woman you are today.

Give Your Hair the TREATMENT IT DESERVES AT
MAGNOLIA
SALON By Melanie Furlong Photos Lisa Landrie
W
hen Brittany Jorgensen first found Magnolia Salon, her hair was damaged and broken. Her new stylist, Kristie Fisher promised that by taking the right steps it would become healthy and long again. “I trusted her from the moment I first sat in her chair,” says Jorgensen. “Magnolia is the type of salon that you look forward to going to. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and you always feel at home when you are there.” The inviting salon, located on the second floor of one of Saskatoon’s busiest corners, features a gorgeous view of the city, six fabulous stylists and luxury hair care products to suit all your needs. Fisher opened the salon seven years ago, but it remains one of the city’s hidden gems. Recently, Magnolia Salon renovated its retail area to accommodate the quality products they offer from Bumble and Bumble and Kerastase, which is exclusive to Magnolia in Saskatchewan. “These are very different lines,” says Fisher. “Kerastase, a luxury product from France, is more of a treatment and styling line that will give you smooth, healthy and beautiful hair. Bumble and Bumble, out of New York City, is more of an editorial end styling line.” The renovation also means that the focus at Magnolia Salon is now completely on hair. All stylists on staff receive continued education so they can pamper their clients with up-to-date, full service hair care from stylish cuts and colour to extensions and Kerastase hair treatments. “Our stylists are very well educated,” says Fisher. “And our front desk support is amazing. When our clients call or come in, they’re dealing with people who are educated in the products and services. We pride ourselves on making sure our clients are well taken care of.” The staff at Magnolia Salon enjoys the atmosphere, the products and each other. Stylist Valerie Friesen says, “Not
only do I enjoy working with such high quality products, but it’s so refreshing to be part of a team of stylists that value education and working together as a team.” Fisher would like to welcome a few more stylists to the team who will also be passionate about the industry and want to grow a solid career. “They must have a solid education base and want to learn continuously,” she says.
Client Kirsten Brom says, “All the Magnolia staff are a delight! I have experienced exceptional service and treatment at the salon over the years. They are a wonderful team who always put the needs of clients first. There is no one I’d rather let care for my hair than the gals at Magnolia! My husband has also become a huge fan of the salon and enjoys the fun and stylish way his hair looks after a cut.”
The next time you make a hair appointment at Magnolia Salon, mention this Fine Lifestyles story and receive a complimentary Kerastase treatment! askatoon has an exciting new women’s clothing boutique. Olson + Burke opened downtown on 21st Street at the beginning of September. Owner Cori Molloy, a former lawyer, found that it could be a challenge for her to find stylish, top-quality clothing to wear for work and realized that this must also be true for other professional women in the city. She realized it was the perfect time and place to open an

independent upscale fashion boutique, thereby fulfilling a lifelong dream. Armed with years of retail experience, a passion for women’s clothing, and an education in fashion merchandising management, Molloy set about creating a store that would meet the varied clothing needs of Saskatoon women. The result was a complete lifestyle store, stocking top name brands in everything from
professional attire to casual clothing, sportswear to denim, as well as a complete line of accessories. Customers will find Iris, Smythe, Pink Tartan, Michael Kors, Black Orchid, Tara Jarmon and much, much more. New lines and items are arriving almost daily. As a mother and a professional, Molloy knows that it can be difficult for women to find time to go shopping for the clothes
they need. To make it easier, Olson + Burke offers assistance with wardrobe planning and personal shopping. Come in for an initial consultation so that Molloy can learn your style, size, shape and fashion needs. Then, having partnered with a concierge service, the boutique can have clothing selections dropped off at your home or office for you to try on at your convenience whenever you are looking for something new; they will then pick up those items that don’t work and take them back to the store. When it came to naming the store, Molloy wanted it to be something both meaningful and inspirational to her. Born and raised in Saskatoon, she chose to honour her family by using her grandmother’s maiden names. “It reminds me on a daily basis of my roots and the amazing women in my family,” she says.
Whether you are looking for a few items to complete your wardrobe or need an entire seasonal makeover, Olson + Burke is the place to go. Molloy is always happy to answer your questions and help you to choose the ideal outfit for any occasion, be it casual Fridays, the office Christmas party, a job interview or a winter vacation. You can follow Olson + Burke on Facebook and Instagram to keep track of the latest arrivals and events. As well, a spectacular grand opening event is being planned. Details will be posted on Facebook.

C
onfidence reads on a bride’s face,” says Kimberley Camboia, co-owner of Saskatoon’s W Bridals ~ Curvy Couture. “And aside from choosing who you’re going to marry, the most important part of the experience is the wedding dress,” she notes. “[At W Bridals, we] bring out the confidence of every woman: today, not 10 pounds from now.” “
Partnering with her sister and co-owner, Kayla, and their seamstressextraordinaire mother, Eddie, the women have between them what can easily be described as a lifetime of bridal experience. But W Bridals is not just a regular bridal shop. W Bridals is a premiere couture bridal boutique catering to real women with shapely bodies. With more than 60 designer gowns available at any time, Camboia is proud to be offering her clientele the “dresses they see in the magazines.” It’s not just the selection at W Bridals, but the experience of shopping there. “Our brides shop by the dress they want to try on,” explains Camboia. At W Bridals, you won’t find “size numbers” on gowns. What you’ll find are certain “attributes” every woman would be proud to be: timeless, vivacious, sassy, fabulous, unique, ravishing and glamorous. What this does is allow a bride to relax during her gown search, rather than be anxious about the number. “I was quite worried, thinking I would likely never find anything I liked, let alone something that looked good on me,” admits Traci Lowe. “[But] they knew exactly what would suit me and my body type! It was an exciting, fun and rewarding experience, one I will never forget. [Kimberley, Kayla] and this amazing dress made me feel so good about myself.” “We’re different in the way we service our brides,” explains Camboia on their roles as bridal consultants. “We’re not here to get you dressed. We listen, we meet needs. We know it’s overwhelming, but we offer guidance.” Camboia notes that because brides are committing to a six-month to two-year relationship with W Bridals, they take exceptional care with every woman. The consultants show the couture gowns to bridesto-be, and the women place “clips” on the ones they prefer to try on.

Camboia says they are diligent about pairing preferences with what suits each individual bride. After each gown is tried on, they ask for feedback from the bride on the dress. “Each ‘no’ gives us information about finding that ‘yes.’ It could be five, 15 or 20 [gowns] if that’s what it takes.” Says Kelli Saemann, “Kayla and Kimberley assisted with honest expertise to find the right fit and style of dress for me. It was the type of wedding dress shopping that a girl would dream of: like you see on TV, that seems too good to be true!” On why she loves her role as bridal consultant, Camboia smiles. “We are passionate business women and our goal is to help a demographic of women who have been under-serviced and put in a corner. Instead, we want to highlight them, and let them know that they don’t need to lose weight for their wedding or change anything about themselves to look great. And we are so thrilled to be able to offer this in our city.”

Bra Fitting 101
W
Angela Craig Bodacious Bustlines 520 Central Street Warman, SK 306.249.6239 202 - 191 Edwards Way Airdrie, AB 587.360.0533 www.bodaciousbustlines.ca
here do you start? If you Google “bra fitting” about 14,400,000 results will come up. This will leave you feeling like you have to run screaming to a store where custom fitting and sizing is done. Bodacious Bustlines and Lingerie is where you can go for help. My manufacturing and pattern-making background allows perfect measuring and fitting for each client. The most common question we get is, “Why do your bras fit differently than department store bras?” It is not the bras. I carry the same brands that you may find in another store or specialty shop. The difference is in how I train my staff to measure. For example, the rule for almost all North American department stores is to add five inches to the under bust measurement. This is ludicrous from a sewer or pattern maker’s point of view. Who in their right mind adds five inches to a snug-fitting garment that is made of stretchy fabric? Let’s use some good old common sense here ladies. If you were making baggy jeans or a loose top, yes, absolutely add five inches or more. But not on a bra or swimsuit! The measuring process gives us a simple guideline to what size to start you in. Then we show you how to “fluff the girls,” as we put it, to get the wire sitting on the ribs and not on the breast tissue. Ninety
per cent of the time, after “fluffing the girls” we discover that we must go up a cup size. It is common to bring a person up three cup sizes bigger as the customer gets better and better at pulling their breast tissue into the cup. It can be a little surprising, disconcerting and many times overwhelming when the letter goes from a C to an F. Not to worry: it is only a letter and your size will vary from bra to bra, fabric to fabric and colour to colour. There are slight variations to every bra. This is why it’s almost impossible to buy bras online. Believe me, I have the hard evidence in the recycle bins of bras that are donated to us once we show ladies the difference (we accept used bras to recycle for parts or to donate to women in third world countries). What else do we offer that may be different? We warranty our products and have free repairs during the life of a bra. We also offer a referral program to credit to your account in order to earn free products. Each bra you donate to our recycling program earns you 10% per cent off the purchase of a new regular priced one. Last, but not least, we work hard to make bra shopping a fun experience, not a stressful chore. Each woman deserves to have a bra that makes her feel wonderful, inside and out. Stop in and let us bring out the the wow in your bustline.

Beauty Comes easy at The Lemon Tree By Rebecca Henderson Photos Candace Epp Photography

ith its trendy open-concept atmosphere and semiprivate pampering stations, The Lemon Tree Salon & Studio offers clients exclusive treatments that prove why feeling beautiful comes from within. “We’re very fashion-forward,” says owner Heather Jebson. “But we’re also conscientious of our client’s health and look to products that provide a holistic approach to beauty.” Jebson opened The Lemon Tree four years ago with another hairstylist and it quickly became the salon Saskatoon residents trusted with their hair and makeup. “The staff is highly educated, and at least once a year we take trips to different countries and cities in order to expand our knowledge on business and technique,” says Jebson. The Lemon Tree also offers a mentorship program for new apprentices who work with the staff to hone their skills as a hairstylist or esthetician under the guidance of a pro. “It’s about providing the best decisions for any particular service.” A strong team atmosphere is an aspect Jebson takes very seriously. “Our staff enjoys giving back to the community. We’re currently in the process of raising money to provide a dinner for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House,” she says. The Lemon Tree also holds its annual Yellow Carpet event, a night of hair and fashion, which raises money for a charity of their choice; in the past, contributions have gone to United Way, Dress for Success, the Crisis Nursery

and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Saskatoon. Jebson says the Yellow Carpet event is also a chance for stylists to be given creative free-range from hairstyles to overall image. “It’s a chance to be able to create a style you don’t necessarily get to see or do behind the chair.” The Black Box Event on Oct. 27 is another community-oriented event, where $20 tickets are sold at the salon and guarantees patrons makeup education, as well as $20 toward any SST product sold in store. “SST is a luxury makeup line in Saskatoon that’s like food for your skin,” says Jebson. The owner and founder of SST educates patrons on what they spend their money on and what kind of makeup products will enhance their natural beauty. “It’s very fascinating and I’ve learned so much,” she says. “There’s a CC Cream that’s made from cabbage and tomatoes with no added chemicals.” The Lemon Tree deals primarily with styling, extensions and colour, with its exclusive hair product lines Schwarzkopf and Label M — the latter of which is used on the runways at London Fashion Week. However, it also has a range of other services, such as fashion nails, lash extensions, manicures and pedicures (including its double pedicure room for dual pampering), as well as makeup application with MUD Cosmetics. The Lemon Tree was one of the first salons to offer on-location bridal and event services. Clients can relax in the comforts of their home as stylists and makeup artists provide luxurious services for their special event. For the myriad of services offered, it’s no surprise The Lemon Tree picked up two accolades at the Salon Driver Business Awards in Las Vegas last year. “It’s incredibly rewarding,” says Jebson, who attends the Salon Owner Conference as well. “Top salon owners from all over Western Canada come together and offer advice to one another. You assimilate a wide range of knowledge, and it’s extremely exciting.” PREVIOUS PAGE Heather Jebson, owner LEFT Heather Jebson, owner with the staff of The Lemon Tree

World of Complementary Health Part 3 of 3
I
BY SARAH VERMETTE
n the western world, people are used to standing in line at a pharmacy to have prescriptions filled. Too often, people misuse prescribed medicines by not completing the full prescription cycle. This causes the body to develop resistance to that drug, rendering it useless in the future. Several sources, such as the Mayo Clinic and the American College of Physicians, have reported that as this occurs on a wide-spread scale, there are fewer drugs for doctors to turn to for treatment, which
could cause worldwide epidemics. More so, the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse issued a troubling report discussing the prevalence of prescription drugs being used for recreational use. This obviously belittles the legitimacy of what they are to be used for: to save lives. Many conditions, but certainly not all, can be successfully treated with gentler types of treatment. There are various branches of complimentary medicine that use naturally occurring or manmade substances for treatment.

Homeopathy Homeopathy is a system of medicine that treats the individual with highly diluted substances, given mainly in tablet form, with the aim of triggering the body’s natural system of healing. In its current form, homeopathy has been widely used worldwide for more than 200 years. Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat like with like; that is, a substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms. This concept is sometimes used in conventional medicine: for example, the stimulant Ritalin is used to treat patients with ADHD, or small doses of allergens such as pollen are sometimes used to de-sensitize allergic patients. However, one major difference with
Aromatherapy Aromatherapy is the practice of using the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being. The inhaled aroma from these essential oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing. Though little is known about the history of aromatherapy, the actual term “aromatherapy first originated in 1937 when French chemist, ReneMaurice Gattefosse, invented the word after a burn incident spurred his curiosity about the healing power of essential oils. Aromatherapy is used for a variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement and increased cognitive function. There are a wide number of essential oils available, each with its own healing properties.

homeopathic medicines is that substances are used in ultra high dilutions, which makes them non-toxic. Homeopathic medicines (which homeopaths call remedies) are prepared by specialist pharmacies.
Naturopathy Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary healthcare system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body and unfavourable lifestyle habits. Treating both acute and chronic conditions, naturopathic treatments are chosen based on the individual patient: their physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors. In addition to diet and lifestyle changes, natural therapies including botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation and traditional Chinese medicine/ acupuncture may also be used during treatments.
Complimentary therapies are a good option for people who want healthcare that is less invasive, gentler on the body and oriented to individual needs. Many people find that a more holistic approach is required to find lasting results when conventional medicine has been unsuccessful. Others find a combination of conventional medicine and complimentary methods is the most successful approach to managing overall well-being. At the same time, depending on the person, different symptoms are best treated with different modalities. Because every person is unique, what works for one person may not work for another. If venturing into this area for the first time, it may take some trial and error before finding the method that is best suited to you.

ith cold and flu season just around the corner, here are some tips and tricks to differentiate between the two and protect yourself. GENERAL PREVENTATIVE AND TREATMENT MEASURES • • • •
Rigorous hand washing – especially after handling doorknobs etc. Sneezing or coughing into your elbow bend A warm bath with essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, thyme. Avoid sugar – suppresses your immune system so you cannot fight the infection.
Get enough sleep – sleep is recovery time for the body’s different functions including the immune system. Salt water gargles once a week to help support the immune system. Increase mushrooms (shitake, maitake, reishi, cordyceps etc.) in the diet or supplement with them — specifically increase blood cells used to fight off viral infections. Optimize Vitamin D levels — Vitamin D is extremely important for the immune system and being so far north, Canadians do not get enough in the winter months and need to supplement.
WARMING WET SOCKS These are great to use at the first sign of ill health, such as that tickle in the throat, and are often used for conditions such as fever, sore throat, upper respiratory tract infections (colds, coughs, bronchitis, sinus infections), ear infections and sprains/strains of the ankles. This treatment acts to increase circulation in the lower part of the body and decrease congestion in the upper respiratory tract, head and throat areas. They can also be used during acute infections to increase the healing response. All you need are a pair of relatively thin 100 per cent cotton socks (just over the ankle area) and a pair of thick 100 per cent wool socks or ski socks. COLD Very rare. Maybe in kids. Usually absent Common Hacking Very mild Common Rare Common
SYMPTOM Fever Body Aches Sore throat Cough Tired and Weak Stuffy nose Headache Sneezing
DIRECTIONS: 1. Make sure your feet are warm before starting — if needed soak them in warm water for five to 10 minutes then dry thoroughly. 2. Get the cotton socks completely wet with cold water and wring them out so they are just damp. 3. Put the socks on by your bed, and cover with the heavy wool socks and get into bed, under lots of covers. • It will feel strange initially, but after a minute or two they have already been warmed to body temperature. 4. Leave them on overnight! 5. Do this for at least three nights in a row. Choice Nutrition Centres are alternative health care clinics, in Saskatoon and Melfort SK, which has been serving the community for over 20 years. Choice Nutrition offers Integrative Microscopy (live and dried blood analysis), Thermography scanning, Naturopathic Medicine, Low Intensity Laser, Massage Therapy, Food Sensitivity Testing, and Pharmaceutical Grade Supplements. By looking at your blood, our practitioners can determine certain nutrient deficiencies, the overall state of the immune system and other organ systems to create a personalized treatment plan, including the immune boosting nutrients your body requires. PROTECT YOUR EYES WITH

ost people are aware the ultraviolet (UV) rays are harmful to the skin and over-exposure to them can result in skin cancer. Few people, however, realize that eyes are also adversely affected by UV radiation. Like with the skin, UV damage to the eyes is cumulative, and it can take years before the harmful effects show. Exposure to too much UV radiation can potentially lead to a variety of eye ailments. Photokeratitis (also known as sunburn of the eye or snow blindness) is one of the few effects that can be felt in a short amount of time. Temporary blindness can result after only one hour of intense glare from sunlight off of the snow. Most of the effects of over-exposure to UV radiation on the eyes take longer to show. Long-term exposure to UV rays can result in certain type of cataracts, cancer around the eyelids and possibly even age-related macular degeneration later in life (the leading cause of vision loss in Canadians over the age of 50). The skin cancer melanoma which has been linked to UV radiation can also develop in the eyes. Pterygium, a usually non-cancerous growth in the corner of the eye, results from prolonged exposure to UV rays. The potential consequences of too much exposure to UV rays are many and serious. It is necessary to protect your eyes from these rays by wearing sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats. People who use tanning beds should wear protective glasses when tanning; the raccoon eyes that result can be easily covered up with a self tanner. Good quality sunglasses help to protect your eyes from damage due to UV rays and fatigue. When choosing a pair of sunglasses, be sure to buy a pair that provides 99 to 100 per cent protection from UV rays. The amount of protection provided should be stated on the tag. Choose sunglasses with bigger lenses to shield the eyes more fully. Wrap-around sunglasses are the best as they provide protection from peripheral rays, as well. The colour of the lenses is also important. Really dark lenses on sunglasses can actually increase the likelihood of UV damage to the eye by causing the pupil to expand in order to see better thereby allowing in more UV rays. Sunglasses that are tinted amber block out blue light, making it easier to see things in the distance, especially in hazy conditions while sunglasses that are tinted gray are best for driving as they do not distort the colours of traffic lights. Many people wear sunglasses only in the summer or on sunny days. However, sunglasses should be worn even on cloudy days as most clouds actually block out very little UV radiation. Sunglasses should also be worn at all times of the year as many of the UV rays to which the eyes are exposed are reflected off of bright objects, such as cars, buildings, snow, water, sand and pavement. Finally, be sure to have your children wear sunglasses, as well. The World Health Organization states 80 per cent of UV damage to eyes occurs before a person reaches the age of 18. Be sun smart. Protect your eyes from UV radiation. Wear sunglasses year round.

Liposuction and Body Contouring WHAT LIPOSUCTION WILL NOT DO: • • •
Dr. Ian R. Sunderland cosmetic plastic surgeon 602-750 Spadina Cres. E Saskatoon, SK 306.653.7766 www.drsunderland.ca
WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION? Liposuction is a process whereby excess fat is removed from specific body areas using gentle suction and aspiration. It slims and sculpts, improving contour and definition in the targeted area(s). The best results are seen in treating well defined “problem areas,” where localized deposits of fat remain despite diet and exercise.
Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. Liposuction is not a mechanism for weight loss. Liposuction will not treat cellulite or loose, saggy skin.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF LIPOSUCTION? Overall, liposuction is a commonly performed and extremely safe procedure. However, as with all surgery, it does have potential risks. These include irregular contours or asymmetries, prolonged bruising and/or fluid accumulation, changes in skin sensation that may persist, rippling of loose skin or worsening of cellulite, infection, need for revision surgery, blood clot in the legs which can propagate to the lungs, anesthetic risks, and potential damage to deep tissues such as blood vessels, muscle or organs.
COMMONLY TREATED AREAS INCLUDE:
WHAT IS BODY CONTOURING? Body contouring refers to the surgical contouring of various areas of the body. In contrast to liposuction, which is minimally invasive and specifically targets fat, body contouring involves surgical incisions and addresses excess fat and skin. As such, a more dramatic result is achieved, at the expense of greater scarring.
• • • • • •
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BODY CONTOURING? The typical body contouring patient has experienced a significant weight loss, either through diet and exercise, or a surgical weight loss procedure. They
abdomen thighs hips and buttocks legs and arms back chin and neck
have achieved a stable weight, but have been left with excess saggy skin. The areas of concern to most patients are the abdomen, upper arms, breasts and thighs/buttocks. WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE FOR THESE PROCEDURES? Pain following liposuction is usually very tolerable but swelling and bruising can be significant. You will likely be required to wear a compressive garment for a few weeks to minimize the swelling and bruising and help the tissues to adhere to their new contour. You can expect to be back to your usual activities within two to four weeks, but it may take months for the swelling to fully dissipate. Recovery after body contouring surgery is highly dependent upon the procedure(s) performed — you should discuss this with your surgeon. In many cases you will have surgical drains in place: small, thin tubes temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. In addition, for both liposuction and body contouring surgery you will need to be up and walking as soon as possible to help avoid deep venous thrombosis (blood clot in the legs). HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT SURGEON? It is important to only seek consultation from a surgeon who is certified in plastic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the only national accrediting body (searchable database at http://www.royalcollege.ca/portal/ page/portal/rc/directory).

e know that choosing the right food for your pets is difficult. With hundreds of options all packed onto store shelves, it’s no wonder that people believe quality still comes down to the price of food. This is no longer the case. The lower-quality brands have recently started re-packaging and charging the same price as a quality food, making customers believe they are just as good and reaping a much higher profit. But not everyone knows how to tell the difference. That’s why I’m here to help. It took years of independent research to find the important differences between high and low quality foods, and I’m going to teach you one of the methods we use to quickly determine the actual quality of pet foods. It’s simple and will save you money. Instead of looking at the initial cost of the food, you should instead look at the feeding guidelines on the back of the bag. This is the fastest way to find out
the quality. My rule: the amount you feed equals the amount of fillers in the food. That lower quality food may initially cost the same as all the others at the “specialty food store,” but when you’re directed to feed five to six cups per day, you end up buying twice the amount of food compared to the similarly priced but nutrient-dense bag that only requires two to three cups per day. At Canine Corner, we believe that nutrition is the foundation to overall good health. We research every possible brand, sifting through the many options and selecting only the healthiest foods with the most benefits. Still having trouble deciphering your pet’s food and want our help? We offer in-store and telephone consultations on a regular basis. Don’t have time to drive to Warman? TAKE A
SPA DAY By Trina Annand

T
hroughout human history some form of spas have existed, with their earliest roots dating back to the Roman Era. The culture was known for building structures around thermal or mineral springs, and visiting them was considered vital to a person’s health. Often, Romans would travel great distances to experience the spring’s benefits, making wellness tourism popular for centuries. In the 20th century this mentality shifted: going to a spa was viewed as a frivolous luxury. Now, spas are shifting their approach to focus on wellness, and medical science is learning more about the value of relaxation to one’s overall health. Stress leave is a modern creation, arising
from the realization that stress not only makes people sick, but can also kill, making spa time a necessity to combat the strains of modern day life for both men and women, regardless of their profession. Taking an entire day off to head to the spa may not be possible for everyone with today’s busy lifestyle, but everyone can spare an hour or two every so often. Massage is traditionally considered a spa treatment. It is proven to reduce stress and hormone levels, boost immunity and mood, relieve pain and increase circulation. spa indulgence, creating an overall refreshed and relaxed feeling. With more than 30 different types of massage, there is something for every person and condition — from deep tissue and hot stone, to raindrop and shiatsu. Spas can also provide valuable information, assessments and regimens for clients with problem skin. Facials combine the relaxation of massage with the added benefits of a detoxification, mirco-abrasion, moisturizing or vitamin-adding treatment. Facial massage can also reduce the occurrence of tension headaches and increase circulation to the face, allowing for a more youthful appearance. Part of the battle of maintaining a youthful face is knowing the right methods for ensuring healthy skin. With the right spa skincare professional, clients can treat skin conditions ranging from rosacea and dry skin to eczema and acne. Reducing pain and rejuvenating youth are the guiding principles behind spa facial treatments. Spa treatments can also result in a more polished professional appearance. Putting your best foot forward
in the corporate world often means creating a “pulled together” look. To go along with a fresh face, a manicure and pedicure can provide a highly polished appearance. These treatments not only look great, but also reduce stress on the body through massage and even hot wax processes. Pedicures also improve overall foot heath by softening skin — reducing the possibility of cracks and rough spots — and can even catch foot conditions before they get too serious. A manicure and a pedicure combine great health with a pretty polish or natural clear coat, literally putting your best foot forward. Though there are many at-home spa inspired treatments on the market, nothing compares to having someone else pamper you, allowing true body and mind relaxation. Spas have greatly shifted their image over the years as a result of more savvy clients who better understand the industry and demand results. This new approach focuses on the wellness elements of spa treatments and incorporating medical procedures, giving rise to the medical spa. At a medical spa all the standard spa treatments are offered, combined with youth enhancing medical treatments like Botox, oxygen treatments, dermal fillers, laser treatments, nutritional consultants, and in some cases even tattoo, mole and skin tag removal. Ensuring both a happy and healthy body with every visit is key with medical spas. Whether you are looking for all the bells and whistles that modern day spas offer, or simply a relaxing treatment to get away from a busy day, spa excursions can be perfect for busy couples or for a bonding escape for friends. Taking care of yourself will never go out of style; good health and youth maintenance ensure you get the most out of life. Everyone needs to get away now and then, and with vacations few and far between, taking a spa day can be the perfect break from the chaos of everyday life. Whether you’re a busy mom or a corporate juggernaut, it pays to take a spa day.

Is it important to use skin care products from the same line or can you mix and match from different product lines? — Kim Kortje Hartsook The important thing is that you are indeed following a home care regimen for your skin! The strength and active ingredients in professional products can differ, therefore I would not suggest
combining products without consulting a professional first. Some ingredients may counteract each other and hinder the purpose of the product. Some could even cause adverse reactions. Your skin care professional will generally suggest using a home care regimen from one particular line to ensure the best results are achieved. If my babysitter cancels, is it taboo to bring my baby along while I get spa services? — Marjorie Smith Although some spas may be set up to allow proper space for mom and baby, I do not suggest it. Spa time is generally a very precious time for mothers (or fathers) to enjoy some time away from their little people. To maintain the tranquil, calming experience a spa is designed to offer all of its guests, many spas have restrictions for babies or small children. Having children in the spa could also be a safety concern. Most spas house hot wax, sterilizing and disinfecting chemicals, sharp medical instruments, and even unsupervised pool areas. To experience the best spa visit you can, I definitely suggest finding a helpful sitter and enjoying your relaxation time
in peace and quiet! After all…don’t busy moms deserve a little me time too? Am I supposed to be naked for a massage and will the massage therapist be there when I undress? — Sonja Jan Every massage therapist may differ from spa to spa, however, the comfort of their client should always be of the utmost importance. I suggest requesting a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) to ensure your service provider is qualified and professional. Generally, your therapist will step out of the room for your privacy while you undress and make yourself comfortable on the treatment table. You may choose to undress fully or keep undergarments on if this makes you more comfortable. Your therapist should always knock upon re-entering the room to perform your massage and will continue to keep you draped appropriately through your treatment to avoid any discomfort. Following your treatment, your therapist will leave the room for you to re-dress and enter only when you have completed.

An Interview with the Owner of One of Canada’s
TOP 10 SALONS Photos Courtesy Visions Salon and Spa
Visions Salon and Spa is an internationally-renowned hair salon and spa right here in Saskatoon. Fine Lifestyles recently interviewed owner Wayne Grund on his team’s beauty philosophy, natural product line and how giving back is an essential component of the business.

FineLifestyles
Saskatoon
Fine Lifestyles: Founded in 1982 as Shear Talent, in 2000 you re-branded the salon as Visions and incorporated additional spa services into its client offerings. For 32 years what has made Visions the successful business it is and the choice salon for Saskatonians? Wayne Grund: Several factors, but definitely family commitment to our guests’ salon experience and the quality of work done by our professionals. My daughter, Jackie Yochim, and wife, Debra, train and mentor the Visions team. Continuous training is a top priority as our stylists and aestheticians provide world-class service. Guests become a part of our Visions family; we welcome them into our salon as we welcome friends into our home. Guest experiences include a thorough consultation of lifestyle, facial shape and home care beauty regime. Whether a guest’s look is classic or ahead of the trends, Visions is dedicated to providing “Wow!” results. FL: Your team has had its styles featured in magazines worldwide, and even in preparations for the Oscars’ red carpet. How does Visions continually receive such wide-spread recognition? WG: We set no limits! Our team believes in training, working hard, and letting our work speak for itself. This is the same philosophy we have with our salon guests: we set no limits on their possibilities. FL: Visions Salon and Spa works with and provides guests with sustainably harvested organic products. You also “walk the talk” of a green Earth by recycling, reducing and reusing. What are your salon’s products of choice and why? WG: In 2008 I started educating myself on the toxins and allergens in common hair care products. Because my family believes in “beauty with a conscience,” we founded Surface, a highperformance product line that respects both our users’ personal health and the Earth on which we live. Surface award-winning products have become the choice of fine salons throughout North America and over 25 Hollywood productions, including Sons of Anarchy and Modern Family. Our skin care choice, Eminence, a handmade organic product, is the preference amongst celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Madonna. FL: You are a big supporter of giving back. What role does Visions have in supporting the community?
WG: Visions Salon and Spa is truly dedicated to making the world a better place. We support breast cancer awareness, SWITCH (Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community Health), The Princess Shop Female Youth Development, Earth Day, the SPCA, Adopt-a-Family, and the Saskatoon Food Bank. Visions created Women Helping Women, raising over $3,000 for The Mumford House, a shelter operated by the Salvation Army for homeless women and their children. Our salon also provided IMPACT Cambodia with cosmetology supplies to support the education of women and girls rescued from the sex trade. Our product companies give back, too. Surface sponsors 50 World Vision children and supports worldwide disaster relief. Eminence plants a tree for every product purchased — to date accounting for over 1,850 trees planted. FL: Why should someone come to Visions Salon and Spa? WG: People are what make the difference at Visions. We are a team who is completely invested in making your day spectacular.

hris Wood has been creating natural bath and beauty products for over 15 years. Two years ago, Chris opened Wood’s Body Goods to give others the opportunity to experience these wonderful, all-natural beauty products. Now, thanks to the assistance of Women Entrepreneurs and the Praxis School of Entrepreneurship, women and men all over the province are reaping the benefits of using these wholesome goods. Wood’s Body Goods is a company based on the premise: “Be happy, have fun and always be natural.” With this in mind, Chris has created a variety of entertaining party options where people of any age can come together for a fun-filled afternoon or evening, where friends will discover how to make or personalize lip balms and lip shimmers, bath bombs and bath salts, body butter and so much more. At the end of the party, everyone takes home what they make, with the colours and aromas perfectly customized to fit each person’s individual personality and taste. These parties are great for a girls’ night in, stagette, staff party or lunch and learn. Chris also does parties specially geared to girls, ages five and up. Your daughter and her friends will have a magical birthday in your home where they will not only make
their own beauty products, but will also enjoy feeling like modern-day princesses as they are treated to their very own mini spa. “Chris came to my daughter’s ninth birthday party where they made bath salts, bath bombs and lip gloss,” attests Shannon Senecal. “She also did a minispa with the girls afterwards. They loved it all. Chris has a wonderful demeanour and was fantastic with the kids. It was a stress-free, unique and special party.” Wood’s Body Goods has a new party option available: the fresh-to-order party. Sit back, relax and enjoy an evening visiting with your friends while Chris whips up some customized bath and beauty products made just for you and your guests. This makes for a great Christmas party or wedding add-on, where your guests will get personalized gifts from the event. Chris brings a menu so each guest can choose the products, colours and aromas that are right for them. So simple and stress-free, you will want to make your fresh-to-order party a regular event. All Wood’s Body Goods products are paraben-free and, with the exception of their beer soap, gluten-free. They carry a full unscented line of products that are great for people with allergies or who work in environments where scented products are prohibited, such
as hospitals. Wood’s Body Goods gives consumers the option of using healthy, all-natural beauty products, something that is as important as eating healthy foods. Chris explains, “Be selective about what you feed your skin! If you wouldn’t put it on your mouth, ditch it! I like to say, with some skin care products, you should say a prayer before putting them on your body. With ours, you should say grace.” Go online to order your all-natural bath and beauty products individually or as a monthly subscription or book a party or lunch and learn with Chris at Wood’s Body Goods today!

REVEAL SALON & SPA REVEAL YOUR INNER BEAUTY By Karen Cowan Photos Heather Fritz
T
he co-owners of Reveal Salon and Spa may be 20 years apart but their passion for their business is one and the same.
Two years ago, Melanie Kardynal asked her then-colleague Annette Good to look at a space on Acadia Drive for their future full-service salon and spa. “I’m meant to be here,” Annette says, reflecting on that day. She had previously owned a salon in England after extensive training in Europe. She moved back to Canada 13 years ago and is now in her 29th year in the industry. “I wouldn’t have embarked on this partnership with anyone else,” says
56
Melanie, who grew up in Saltcoats then moved to Saskatoon to train at Marca College. With six years’ experience she felt she was ready to start her own business venture. “We love our salon and we love what we do,” Annette says. “We had looked at other spaces but felt an immediate sense of comfort and belonging here. We love the fact that we can be our own bosses, choose our own schedule to work around our lifestyles, and provide a space for others to do the same. Journeyman stylists Holli Mackinnon, Ashton Strelau, esthetician Lauren Stein and Stephanie Weber of Sphynx Laser joined us from our previous salon. Hope Jervis, RMT, rented her space from the previous owner along
with journeyman stylists Kerri Daelick, and Janeen Dale.” The supportive group of women at Reveal welcomes the opportunity for potential new team members who are looking for a positive work environment with the freedom to create their own schedule. They have available space for one new stylist, a nail technician/esthetician and a part-time massage therapist. They are also open to accommodating new services, including spray tanning or lash extensions. The newly renovated salon and spa offers a full range of services to “reveal your inner beauty.” Experienced and friendly staff caters to clients of all ages. Services

include hair, nails, tanning, massage, waxing, facials, spa packages, bridal packages and gift certificates. Reveal provides top retail products, ranging from Eufora, Osis, Label.m, Macadamia, SST Cosmetics, Whistler Naturals skin care, Hempz and more. In the presence of good company and a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere, most of the team’s clients are regulars who have become like family following the stylists from previous salons. They feel right at home in the new environment. The entire team strives to keep up with the most current trends through continuing education and product knowledge. Passionate about sharing new techniques, the stylists recommend to clients the best hair care products to enhance their new style at home. Reveal Salon and Spa is perfectly nestled in College Park neighbourhood, offering the convenience of free parking and online booking. Follow them on Facebook and visit the website for monthly specials, including great products and services. SPHYNX LASER & SKIN THERAPY Stephanie Weber wants her clients to come in feeling comfortable and leave feeling confident. The owner of Sphynx Laser and Skin Therapy has obtained several certifications in the industry, and most recently received training in Toronto before finding herself a spot at Reveal Salon and Spa. “I like helping clients feel good about themselves. Proper skin care can make a world of a difference to one’s self esteem,” says Weber, a nine-year veteran in the skin industry. Sphynx offers skin rejuvenation treatments, vascular treatments, treatments for age spots, scars pigmentation, acne, and hair removal, which is one of the most popular procedures performed worldwide. Weber is working towards providing cellulite treatment and microdermabrasion.

Born and raised in Arcola, SK, Weber understands the need for laser treatments in rural Saskatchewan. Weber has clients that travel from places like Prince Albert, North Battleford and surrounding areas for appointments. She is taking her business mobile and will be operating in nearby communities. “Some clients do feel hesitant, at first,” Weber said, adding her laser equipment is gentler than some versions. The light-based technology removes hair by coagulating nutrition in the follicles, making for a more comfortable treatment. “People are always pleasantly surprised at how manageable the treatments are,” she said. Respect & suppoRt
the life and paintings of

espect and support are the building blocks in the life of artist Kevin PeeAce. They are also the principles which guide his work as a professional artist. When he speaks, these two subjects arise again and again: respect for other people — family, friends and the community — and support, both that which he gives to others as well as the support he receives in return. Born in Kelvington, Sask., Pee-Ace is a member of the Yellow Quill First Nation. Growing up, his family played a key role in his development, both as a person and as an artist. “From my grandmother, Delvina Keewistep, I learned a lot

about my culture and gained a great respect for it,” explains Pee-Ace. “When I went to visit her years ago, she showed me a horse saddle entirely covered in beadwork that taken her all winter to make.” Upon returning home, Pee-Ace began exploring some of the themes in saw in her work, such as the flowers. This eventually led to the floral motif style that dominates his current works. “The bold use of colours and black borders serve as a window, offering an insight into the culture,” says Pee-Ace. “The flowers themselves represent First Nations culture. I paint people sitting or standing on the flowers to show how every individual is supported by their culture.” Pee-Ace was raised by his late mother, Ann Whitehead. “My mother was the most influential person in my life,” states the artist. Pee-Ace’s great love and respect for his mother and all mothers is evident in his work, which frequently depicts a mother holding a child. This shows the huge amount of support that children receive from their mothers, who in turn draw strength from their culture and its traditions. “The children in my paintings are reaching for stars. The stars represent their goals. The mothers and flowers show that the support of family and culture are necessary in order for a child to achieve dreams,” explains Pee-Ace. Pee-Ace’s uncle Jerry Whitehead is also an artist, and his use of strong, brilliant colours has made a big impact on his nephew’s work. “I use bright, vibrant colours in my paintings to exude a positive, hopeful tone,” says Pee-Ace. “Sometimes people mistake my uncle’s work for mine because of our similar use of colour.” As an adult, Pee-Ace has drawn incredible support from his wife, Vicki Head, and their three children, Dawn, Eve and Raymond, and new grandson, Daniel. “My family is very important to me. They give me direction and purpose. There was a time years ago when I wasn’t receiving any calls for my work. As this began to stretch from days to weeks to months, I began to question myself and my decision to be a professional artist. That seed of doubt grew until one day my wife reminded me that there was a reason I chose to do what I do.” Things changed for the better soon after. “My wife has always been there for me, and has complete faith in me

our artistic endeavours. Working and teaching the children is a great learning experience, when I get the calls to work at schools, I am honored and humbled to work with them. I care about being an influence in the students’ lives. I want to show them the value of how creating art, in all its forms, is essential to our basic understanding of our environment and each other. To demonstrate how art can enlighten and enhance cultures and communities as well as its abilities to bridge awareness on a variety of social issues.” He enjoys having a positive impact on the lives of children. Pee-Ace himself went to residential school at Gordon’s and later St. Michael’s before moving to Mission, BC, with his mother at the age of 12. There he attended high school and later completed a two-year fine arts program at University College of Fraser Valley before returning to Saskatchewan as an adult.

projects. Pee-Ace considers working with students to be both an honour and a blessing. “Art was an integral part of how I learned when I was in school. It enabled me to freely express myself,” he explains. “We must learn to cultivate the creative part in all of us, to tap into our feelings and emotions and to release it through
Since then the 42-year-old artist has experienced great joy in creating his breathtakingly beautiful works of art, which can be found gracing the halls of both the University of Saskatchewan and the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon as well as in many other public and private collections. NO FOOD Without Wine
By Mike Tory, The Wine Guy
A
s with all the seasons, the coming of autumn has for me feelings of both joy and pain. The joy comes with the celebration of harvest – the bounty of fields, and, back in the old country, the picking of fruit from vines. The pain is the sorrow of the looming end of a glorious summer, coupled with the thought that soon it will snow. But, without pain, there is no joy. No yin without yang. No dark without light. No food without wine! Here are three sumptuous autumn wines and three tasty tidbits which I hope will bring you a little joy before the pain of winter!
Mike Tory, The Wine Guy, is a recent immigrant to Saskatoon (he fell in love with a Saskatchewan gal) and is delighted at the range of wines available here. His observations have been featured in Wine Spectator, Food & Wine Magazine, a variety of Sunday supplements and various blogs. The Wine Guy is fully committed to the grape cause.

2 to 3 lbs. of boneless pork ribs 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper 1/2 tsp. seasoning salt 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1 medium onion, diced 1/3 cup water barbecue sauce
Chop your boneless pork ribs into bitesize cubes. Sprinkle salt, pepper, garlic powder, and seasoning salt on the meat. Layer the bottom of a crock pot with the onions and add water. Place your seasoned meat cubes on top. Cover with sauce, and set the timer on the crock pot for eight to 10 hours on low heat.

FABRE MONTMAYOU RESERVA MALBEC (ARGENTINA): Deep red colour with an intense bouquet of cherries and spices. Complex and wellbalanced with notes from oak, vanilla and chocolate. Big on the mouth with sweet, silky tannins.
1/2 lb. steak salt and pepper to taste 2 tbsp. mustard 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 package bacon bunch of cilantro, chopped Cut the steak into small cubes. Preheat a large skillet, lightly rinsed with olive oil. Once hot, brown the outside of the beef and season with salt and pepper. Place
the browned meat into a bowl with the mustard, cilantro and Worcestershire. Mix and marinade for five minutes. Once the cubes are cooled, wrap each with bacon and secure with a toothpick. Spread the cubes out on a foil covered baking tray, and bake in the oven at 400F for 10 minutes or until the bacon reaches your desired crispiness. (Hint: turn the cubes every couple of minutes for even crisping)
Pakora These delightful little bites of India are delicious dipped in mint yogurt or mango chutney.
TE MANIA PINOT NOIR (NEW ZEALAND): Red cherry and mocha notes combined with savoury, spicy aromas. Full fruit flavours of red cherries and raspberries, with savoury hints of leather. Balanced with elegant tannins that add complexity.
1 cup besan/gram flour 1/2 inch ginger, finely chopped 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 green chilli, finely chopped bunch of cilantro, chopped 2–3 pinches of baking soda water to make a thick, flowing batter (I use slightly more than 1/4 cup) salt to taste vegetable oil
Mix all the ingredients listed above, except oil. Whisk briskly to make a smooth and lump-free batter. Heat the oil in a deep pan until medium hot. The batter should start to sizzle immediately as you drop it into the oil. Try to make bite-size pieces. Once golden and crisp, remove from the pan and dry with paper towel.

Diamond Duo:
Shannon Tweed and Daughter Sophie Shine in New Reality TV Series
By Heather Fritz Photos Heather Fritz and Austin Young

hen the A&E reality show Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels premiered in 2006, fans began a voyeuristic love affair that lasted seven seasons. We laughed, cried, gasped, raised our eyebrows and shook our heads in disbelief as KISS rock legend Gene Simmons, actress and former Playboy model Shannon Tweed and their two children, Nick and Sophie, bared their all for our reality viewing pleasure. The show ended in 2012, but fans can now get their Tweed-Simmons reality kick as the ‘diamond duo’ of the famous family star in their own show, aptly called Shannon & Sophie. 84

Fans watched little Sophie grow up in the front of the camera; now that she is entering a more independent period of life, she and her mother thought bringing the old Family Jewels fans along for the ride might be fun.
attended college and stepped out of her parents’ shadow with a short run on the TV music competition series The X Factor. Her Surrey-based charity, Sophie’s Place, is part of an outreach centre treating nearly 4,000 abused children a year.
“It seemed like a natural continuation,” Shannon says at home in the TweedSimmons mansion. “We ended Family Jewels kind of abruptly so there are a lot of fans sort of wondering what we’re all doing now.”
When Sophie wondered out loud about a show that focused on the motherdaughter pair, Shannon pitched it to Force Four Entertainment. Eight episodes were produced and the show premiered in May on the W Network.
What are they doing now? To say they’ve been busy is an understatement. Gene tours with KISS and is heavily involved in production and charity work. He has also recently taken on the rapidly expanding network of ‘family-friendly rock ‘n roll experience’ restaurants called Rock and Brews — the first Canadian location is coming soon to Shannon’s hometown of Saskatoon. Shannon’s doing voice over and television work, has a hand in The Smartest Person in Canada game show and works with the Canadian Cancer Society. Nick finished college with a degree in English and World Literature, is a writer, voice over actor and musician. Sophie
“I think there is a lot of reality TV out there that focuses on the drama and fighting; I thought maybe people would just like to see a mom and daughter being happy and enjoying life,” says Sophie. “I honestly don’t know a lot of mothers and daughters who are as close as my mom and I.” Shannon & Sophie is billed as a reality show, and for the most part, that’s true. “Of course we know we’re being filmed,” she adds. “So we’re very conscious that whatever we’re doing is permanent. If something happens, we just deal with it, get over it and go on with life. It’s a reality show, but it’s our life,” she says.

“Eventually, your children grow up and become smarter than you. I don’t know how that happens! The beauty of getting older is that stuff doesn’t bother you. You just want your children to flourish and grow. I’m just glad to be a part of that.” For her part, Sophie is nonplussed about wading into another reality show with all the television cameras intruding in a good portion of her life. “I grew up in the entertainment industry, so having cameras around is normal for me,” she shrugs. “Yeah, it’s kind of annoying they film everything but it’s nice to have those home movies we can look back on.” It’s clear Shannon admires and respects the woman her daughter has become, perhaps with tougher skin than she had at that age. “For Sophie, maybe it was good to get that public humiliation out of the way early,” Shannon laughs. “I mean having parents like us, having your baby pictures and your awkward growth phase up there for everyone to see. She’s stronger than I thought she was and can handle more pressure than I probably could have at that age,” she says. “When I made mistakes when I was 24, they were private. Now you do anything and the world sees it and judges you.” Shannon interjects, “We might not chew with our mouths open, but what you see is really what you get!” Best friends mom and daughter have “always hung out a lot” but as Sophie is growing up and away, Shannon sees a bit of a role reversal. “Now without the boys in it, I’ve become the idiot and she’s the smart one,” Shannon laughs. “Before, Gene was the idiot and the rest of us were smart! The juxtaposition is completely reversed and now I’m getting a taste of what he went through.” She’s philosophical about parenting children who are adults themselves.

As the producers wait for the show to be picked up in the U.S. and Canadian markets, Shannon and Sophie are happy to be sharing authentic lives with new and old fans. “I’m not interested in mothers and daughters who don’t get along. I think we see enough of that on TV, and we see enough fake interactions,” Shannon says, and suddenly studies her daughter closely. “Hey, you’re wearing my pants!” she says. “Yeah? Well, you’re wearing my shoes,” Sophie replies without missing a beat.

If you like to dress a bit more “uptown,” that is perfectly fine too, and you do see some passengers who indeed dress. I often slide a jacket on simply because it hides a multitude of sins (and my tummy) after several days of cruise food. On occasion, we are invited to a “Captain’s Reception” and we do dress appropriately, including a tie and jacket for me and a dressy outfit for my wife. This affair typically happens once on an itinerary — very impressive events indeed. Oceania is very much a family, and that attitude and respect comes across in everything a guest experiences, including special functions with senior officers. Recently, on an Amazon expedition, the cruise director made a point of chatting with every individual sitting on the pool deck and addressed most by first name. This level of dedication and incredible customer service is a hallmark of Oceania and not to be underestimated. Never
have I felt any crew member was just being courteous out of obligation; their approach was always genuine. This sincerity was not applied specifically to me because of my position as speaker; it was standard and consistently remarked on by others. As a matter of fact, on our Amazon expedition more than 60 per cent of the passengers were repeat guests - that speaks volumes. Ask anyone who has sailed Oceania, and I submit the response will be similar. This itinerary aboard the beautifully refurbished Regatta is very popular; actually many categories are waitlisted. Mid-sized vessels (680 guests), tremendous guest services, the best food at sea, and a very interesting lecture series makes Oceania’s Regatta and this journey an absolute delight. I invite you to review the cruise and come along for the time of your life — no regrets. In the event your specific category is sold
out, as they do rapidly, you might consider joining me in October 2015 on a grand journey from Istanbul to Dubai. This itinerary is 21 days and offers fantastic rates including airfare. Sailing aboard the sister ship Nautica, we sweep our way through the most eastern regions of the Mediterranean, visiting Israel, passing through the Suez Canal, the great land of Egypt, sail the Red Sea and arrive in Dubai October 25, 2015. A lecture series is in development for this fascinating part of the world as well as our extended voyage to India, the Seychelles, Madagascar and South Africa. Plan, dream, save and then come play with us as we traipse the world in search of new and wonderful experiences; disappointment is not an option! A Glimpse into the
CAYMAN LIFESTYLE
A Fashion & Culinary Destination By Erin Legg
E
xpansive white sand beaches. Jewel-blue water boasting exotic reefs. Breathtaking sunsets that inspire romance. Traditional Caribbean architecture interspersed with luxurious contemporary development. Opulent shopping, outdoor cafés and a warm, unrushed cosmopolitan feel. Welcome to the Cayman Islands. This elite destination is ranked as one of the world’s most beautiful regions. The distinct experiences had by travellers can be found in the freedom to explore what the islands offer. Rather than limiting guests to an all-inclusive environment, Cayman offers flexibility beyond the compound gates and fences found at other tropical destinations. From the traditional streets of Georgetown, the capital city, to the more modern, architecturally stunning Camana Bay, one thing is apparent: the experience of a lifetime will be had. Cayman is an upscale lifestyle, fashion and culinary destination. Luxury shopping awaits guests just minutes from the beaches, showcasing global style and elegance. Canadian designer Matthew Gallagher was recently crowned the prestigious title of Cayman Islands Stylemaker, his visions being inspired by the islands’ natural beauty and international recognition of sophisticated artistic design. Maison Matthew Gallagher is marked for its impeccable designs crafted from hand-selected fabrics, with precision and glamour evident in each piece. It is with these highly-refined indications that prompted the Stylemaker title — Cayman represents the epitome of fashion and style. Many deem Cayman as one of the best culinary destinations in the Caribbean — perhaps even the world.
The exquisite food and wine scene is remarkable. On Grand Cayman itself are more than 200 restaurants. Oenophiles from around the globe delight in the extensive wine lists of the leading restaurants with vast international selections. In fact, Wine Spectator has awarded its coveted recognition to 14 dining establishments — a true compliment to the Caribbean restaurant scene. Demanding culinary expertise in every food genre imaginable, tourists who frequent Cayman expect a precedent to which internationally renowned chefs have paid attention. Chef Éric Ripert, French culinary master and co-owner of New York City’s Le Bernardin, has married his expertise with the hospitality industry’s leading company, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, and operates a five-star restaurant in the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman called Blue. Other notable dining establishments are Abacus, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, Ortanique and KARoo. The Cayman culinary experience is not limited to travellers. Acclaimed chefs from around the globe recognize the transcendent experience of congregating, cooking and sharing of delectable dishes in this Caribbean setting. In 2013, Top Chef Canada’s season one winner Chef Dale McKay travelled to the Caribbean island to partake in the extravagant Cayman Cookout, an annual event hosted by Chef Ripert at the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman showcasing world-renowned chefs. It was late 2012 when Chef McKay received his personal invitation from Chef Ripert. Chef McKay, owner of Saskatoon’s Ayden Kitchen & Bar, says of his being approached, “It was a massive honour being with some of

the best chefs in North America and from around the world in the most beautiful place in the world!” Cayman Cookout is four days of indulgent presentations, demonstrations and workshops held not only at the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman, but also Seven Mile Beach, Rum Point and Camana Bay, allowing people an unforgettable Caribbean culinary experience. The participating chefs host beachside brunches and dinners at five-star restaurants throughout the event for attendees from around the globe. Chef McKay’s 2013 appearance was made memorable by his presentation at “Canada Night” to a sold-out crowd at Abacus, and his Seven Mile Beach cooking demonstration under the tents with waves from the Caribbean sea
serving as a backdrop. Paul Minich of Cayman Island Tourism is a regular patron of Ayden Kitchen & Bar. “It doesn’t need to be said, but Dale is a top global talent and it is an absolute pleasure working with him and enjoying his plates,” Minich states matter-of-factly of his respect for Chef McKay and his team. “It was great fun to bring Dale and his team to Grand Cayman to join Éric Ripert, Anthony Bourdain and José Andrés for this worldclass culinary event.” McKay, who travelled to the premier event with his general manager, executive chef, head chef and son, reflects on his Caribbean travels and reveals what Cayman means to him: “Happiness. Togetherness. My son still talks about it. Everyone needs to go check it out! You know, everyone goes to Mexico for the all-inclusive, but you’re missing out on an experience of a lifetime.”

It is evident Cayman represents a lifestyle in which every detail of food and style are reflected in high esteem. This October, Saskatoon residents will have the privilege of experiencing a luxury fashion and culinary event right here in the city. PARKLUXE Saskatoon will celebrate the good life that is Cayman, featuring a presentation by Stylemaker Gallagher and Chef McKay’s interpretation of the Caribbean paradise. Attendees of this exclusive event will have the opportunity to interact with Gallagher as he is joined by Canadian designers — Rebecca King of Saskatoon, Malorie Urbanovitch of Edmonton and Caitlin Power of Toronto — in a discussion of style, trends and finding inspiration. "When I first visited the Cayman Islands I fell in love with Cayman life and the sense of style and sophistication that goes with it,” says Gallagher. “The Stylemaker program and the destination have continued to serve as a source of inspiration and I'm excited to have the opportunity to now forge new relationships with the Saskatoon market." Guests will have a sampling of the Caribbean culinary scene as Chef McKay and Ayden Kitchen & Bar’s resident mixologist, Christopher Cho, revisit the Cayman Cookout experience, presenting Caymaninspired dishes and cocktails. “I want to showcase the feeling of what one can expect from Cayman,” Chef McKay explains. “Saskatoon loves seafood and demands the highest quality, freshest dishes. I’m looking forward to participating in this new style of event.” Saskatoon residents seeking the exclusive lifestyle found in the Cayman Islands are invited to attend PARKLUXE Saskatoon on Oct. 30 at The Rouge Gallery. The Benefits of Using a Travel Agent for Your Dream Vacation

s the busiest part of the travel season fast approaches, many of us are already beginning to plan our next getaway. If you are planning to take a trip this year, here is some information you will find useful. It will also save you valuable time when planning your vacation, save you money and save your sanity by ensuring a stressfree travel experience. IT IS NOT MORE EXPENSIVE TO USE A TRAVEL AGENT TO BOOK YOUR TRIP
The price is the price, even when you are comparing online. Travel agents are paid by travel and tour companies, not by you. Travel agents are aware of special offers, incentives or price drops that are not always advertised on the countless travel websites out there. YOUR DREAM VACATION CAN BE EASILY CUSTOMIZED BY BOOKING WITH A TRAVEL AGENT With so many options available to consumers, sometimes that vacation you just booked is because that package was available and not necessarily because that is what you actually want. Tour companies offer generic packages that satisfy the majority of consumers, but not necessarily what we all desire the most. Flexible departure dates, room upgrades, inclusive tour packages… this will differ for each traveller. An agent will help ensure your next vacation is truly unique and everything you dream of.
a vacation, for any reason, should be fun, exciting and easy. I have the ability to answer specific questions, address any concerns, suggest personalized options to their travel needs, and share real local travellers’ feedback. Plus, if clients are unable to meet at my office, I will meet them at an alternative location and time that best suits their schedule. Conquering
Clutter
How to Bring organization to Your Home By Katrina Geenevasen
There’s always a sense of rejuvenation that comes from purging your home of what you don’t need or no longer use. Knowing where to start, however, can be overwhelming. While it may be tempting to put off this task, Fine Lifestyles is here to help you get the main rooms of your home in order in no time at all.

Kitchen Consider installing sliding shelves, for easy access to all the items that tend to get lost into the abyss near the back. Adding risers will give you even more space to store smaller items. Meanwhile, vertical cabinets with dividers are great for storing tall items like cutting boards and cookie sheets. To keep all those pot lids organized and out of the way, hang a rack on the inside of the cupboard. How do you use your kitchen and which items do you require the most? Create “zones,” so daily activities can be done quickly and easily. For example, if you like to bake, store all of your baking ingredients, electronics and supplies in one cupboard. If you’re an avid tea or coffee drinker, consider designating a cabinet to store your mugs, teabags, coffee pods, sweeteners and honey. To keep your pantry clutter-free, first purge it by getting rid of anything that’s expired, then purchase clear containers or wire baskets and begin grouping like items together. Ensure kid-friendly snacks are on lower shelves for easy access. For items that tend to come in bulky bags and boxes, purchase coordinating glass jars with lids and affix labels to the front for easy identification. Consider doing the same thing with your spices, and tuck them all neatly and alphabetically into one drawer or cabinet.

your children? Do you use it for reading, or for entertaining guests?
Clear apothecary jars for cotton balls, bath salts and the like will give your bathroom a pretty, spa-like feel, while decorative antique glass dishes or bowls can be used to hold and display jewellery.
Once you’ve figured out how the space is mostly used, it’s time to create zones — much like in the kitchen. If you want to create a reading nook, for example, you may wish to include not only a comfortable chair, but to install shelves to store your treasured books.
Living rooms In many homes, it has many different functions. Do you use it to watch television? Is it play space for

togethers, an ottoman with storage space can make tidying up in a hurry a cinch, and provide extra seating, as well. If you have children, you know all too well how quickly toys tend to take over the space in the living room. Ensure there are plenty of shelves and large boxes that can store toys of various shapes and sizes, and are within easy reach for small children. Bedroom It’s hard to feel relaxed (let alone romantic!) in a cluttered bedroom. But sweet dreams are possible with a few quick fixes. Begin by purging your closet and dressers. If you haven’t worn an item of clothing in a year, it’s time to get rid of it. Next, purchase some vacuum–sealable bags or containers on wheels to store heavy sweaters and pants under your bed. Meanwhile, shoes (which are an integral part of any wardrobe!) should have their own dedicated space in your closet. Consider angled shelves, which present shoes in an easy-to-see way and make matching footwear to your outfits easy. Pullout shelves are another option, and maximize valuable closet space. If you have a lot of accessories and scarves, consider jewellery rolls and clear storage boxes to hold your baubles.

he world of design is changing. The products available these days not only look great, but are smarter as well. There is a great focus on bringing personality into a space, but people want to do it wisely and have purpose behind their design decisions. What are consumers ordering? They want products with more interest, less waste and a lower carbon footprint. For example, a faucet that was traditionally turned on using a handle and then set to an appropriate temperature now uses a pre-set temperature and a hands-free sensor. This not only saves water, but is ultra convenient. People are also sourcing locally made items. From reclaimed to repurposed to recycled, we are seeing innovation and environmentally friendly products invade the marketplace. These
products are more timeless and natural, allowing for a longer lifespan, and release less harmful toxins into the home. People want to renovate once. Investing a little extra upfront, and doing the reno right the first time, saves homeowners from the wastefulness and inconvenience of having to repeat the actions in another five to 10 years. People are utilizing timeless design details, such as natural products: solid wood cabinets, detailed wall features, and classic granite or quartz countertops. By incorporating classic materials, and by changing your paint and accents overtime, any space will look fresh for years to come. Metric Design Centre is on trend with this movement by focusing on bringing Saskatoon innovative products that are of high quality, are kind on the environment,

t the heart of every home, there’s a story. Home is made up of the toasts given at the dinner table, of the fairytales read before bed, of the lives created within its walls. We began telling our story here on Coldwell Banker ResCom Realty in 2007. Though our story didn’t just begin there, Coldwell Banker Real Estate has been helping people find homes longer than any other national real estate brand. You can think of us as friendly neighbours who share our knowledge and experience, and add general insights into the real estate experience. We believe that integrity and honesty are qualities that can’t be learned, and we lead by example, everyday. Henry Moulin began his real estate career in 1984 in Calgary. In 1985 Henry and his family moved to Saskatoon where he became one of the top producers in Saskatoon for more than 20 years. In March of 2012 Henry became co-owner with Rich Jeanneau at Coldwell Banker ResCom Realty, a move he says he should have done years sooner! Henry has been an active member in the local and provincial realtor associations and has served two terms as president on the board of directors of SRAR. A concerned member of the community, in which Henry both works and lives, he has contributed both his time and resources to many worthy causes. Henry is currently

serving on the “Plan to End Homelessness” committee with the United Way of Saskatoon and Area. He and Linda have seven children and nine grandchildren. Rich Jeanneau was born into a real estate family. In 2001 he became a partner in the J.J. Barnicke franchise in Saskatoon. In 2007 Rich purchased the Coldwell Banker franchise where he is currently the broker/owner of Coldwell Banker ResCom Realty. Active in both the local and provincial real estate associations, Rich has served as a director, vice president, and president of the Saskatoon Region Association of REALTORS®, and has also served four years as a commission member of SREC (Saskatchewan Real Estate Commission). He currently serves as a director on the Association of Saskatchewan Realtors, and is a board member for the Saskatoon YMCA. Rich is married to his wife of 27 years, Lisa, and they have three children and two grandchildren and twins on the way. Rich freely gives of his time to many community activities and is a strong leader in Saskatoon and area. Doing meaningful work in an environment that supports and encourages you is the ultimate in job satisfaction. At Coldwell Banker ResCom Realty our sales representatives believe in one another. They also believe in the skills our managers and brokers offer, and they enjoy the benefits derived from the Coldwell Banker System’s reputation within the industry. This kind of respect inspires individuals to

Leo Morrison, a 26-year real estate veteran and team leader, enjoys the unending support in working for Coldwell Banker. “Jeanneau and Moulin are always there, which is what you want from a broker. We learn every day. It’s important for your broker to be knowledgeable — someone who can provide you with information when you need it.” “Its reputation is being ahead of the curve,” says agent Eugene Kohle, who has been working at Coldwell Banker for five years. “You’ll be pleased and your clients will be pleased. There’s a great level of satisfaction because you’re able to make your clients feel at ease and comfortable. It’s always important to try and make a hard time easier.”

Fred Van Landuyt agrees. “I continue to grow within this company and stay knowledgeable.” Van Landuyt has been working at Coldwell Banker for almost 14 years under the leadership of Jeanneau and Moulin. “We strive for a high standard of ethics and professional habits here,” says Van Landuyt. Choosing the Right Auto Insurance
David Cooke, B.Comm, CAIB Cooke Insurance 1 - 411 Confederation Drive Saskatoon 306.384.7000 office@cookeinsurance.com www.cookeinsurance.com
Too many Saskatchewan motorists have basic plate insurance, which includes a $700 deductible, $200,000 liability and very basic injury coverage. In most cases, this is simply not enough. Did you know that if you travel outside the province or drive on gravel roads you can be at a greater risk of being sued, colliding with an underinsured driver, hitting wildlife or damaging your glass?
much damage a skunk can cause to your car. If you hit wildlife, have damage due to fire or lightening, or your vehicle is stolen, your deductible is waived.
To get the right protection for you, combine your basic plate insurance with an auto policy and customize it to your needs.
REPLACEMENT COST: An optional coverage that protects you from depreciation. Replacement cost will replace your vehicle if it is totalled in the first three years of ownership – although in the third year some things aren’t covered, like water damage, vandalism, theft and fire.
WHY GET AN AUTO PAK?
D
riving is second nature to you. It’s automatic: you don’t have to think much about it. The same is often true with auto insurance. You register your car, renew your plates and don’t give it a second thought. But what if the unthinkable happens? Do you know if you’re covered? Sit down with a broker at Cooke Insurance; they know what questions to ask to make sure you are properly covered.
PROTECT YOUR FINANCIAL ASSETS: Starting at $1 million and available up to $5 million, increased liability protects your financial assets in the event of a lawsuit against you. This coverage ensures you won’t be haunted by an accident for years to come. LOWER YOUR DEDUCTIBLE: Makes accidents and minor damages more affordable with deductibles ranging from $50 to $500. Lowering the deductible ensures that a claim process is easier on your wallet. With an Auto Pak you can save money on repairs so have more to spend on the important things. DON’T PAY YOUR DEDUCTIBLE: Don’t be in a stink when you see how
RENTAL CAR COVERAGE: Still need a ride when your vehicle is in the shop? Take the loss of use option and you’re eligible for rental costs and protected for damages to the rental vehicle.
An SGI Canada Auto Pak provides you with the ability to choose the coverage you need. This will help you protect your family, your car, and yourself. Driving isn’t as stressful when you know you are properly covered with an Auto Pak. At Cooke Insurance, we will take the time to sit down with you and make sure all the bases are covered so that you can focus on the more important things in life. Ask the experts at Cooke Insurance which SGI Canada Auto Pak is best for you. An Auto Pak is the right choice for the right protection at the right price for you.

TWENTY YEARS

s a wife and mother of two young boys, Debbie Ross was looking for a way to contribute to the family’s income while still having time to spend with her loved ones. A recent graduate of the University of Saskatchewan with a Business Administration Certificate, Ross liked the idea of starting her own business, believing it would provide the flexibility she needed. With a grandfather and father who had operated an International Harvester dealership and with her own experience working there and for Case Power, Ross had a good grasp on the farm equipment industry and knew there was a need for an agricultural aftermarket parts and accessories business. Thus, she opened Saskatoon Agri-Auto Parts Inc. in 1994.
Two decades later, the business is still going strong. Over the intervening years, the business has experienced four major expansions going from a onebay operation to a four-bay operation with plenty of additional storage space, and from Ross as the sole worker to her having three full-time and two parttime employees, including her husband Graham who joined the company in 1997. Early on, Ross specialized in sprayer parts as the demand for these products was great. This continues to be a key area of the business, which stocks the Polywest product line. family owned and operated funeral and cremation service for over 100 years, Saskatoon Funeral Home is under the direction of General Manager Morgan Edwards, the fifth generation of the Edwards family in the funeral profession. As Saskatoon’s longest-serving, family owned funeral service provider, Saskatoon Funeral Home is unique for
many reasons – the family has a legacy of leading the way for continuous improvement and innovation in the profession, and have been the first to introduce new services and facilities that are now considered essential in the provision of first class quality service. But the unique feature that has made the Edwards’ name and Saskatoon Funeral
Home synonymous with the very best in caring, compassionate service is the fact that each generation of the family has embraced and upheld the same directive for over a century: being there for those in the community during times of need to offer thoughtful and attentive service. “I am the fourth generation of our family to serve Saskatoon, and the fifth generation in the profession,” Edwards explains, noting that his great, great grandfather was a founding member of the Ontario Embalmers Association and served as the Undertaker in Fordwich, Ont. In the 1880s. “He was building caskets and operating a livery service as well so it all started with the family filling a need in the community. That is a side of us that hasn’t changed in our 104 years here in Saskatoon: being there when we’re needed is the most

important part of what we do.” Today Saskatoon Funeral Home is the only funeral home to offer exclusive on site 24-hour guardianship so when a family’s loved one is brought into their care they are never left alone and unattended. It is this dedication to compassionate service along with the Edwards’ passion
for entrepreneurial innovation that has allowed the family’s funeral and cremation services business to grow and evolve over the century. expanded the services they offer to consistently meet and exceed the needs and expectations of the community. In fact, the family has been responsible for bringing a number of new concepts to Saskatchewan – this legacy Edwards says sets the bar high for the current team but it is a goal they strive to achieve and exceed daily. “Our family brought the first motorized funeral coach and ambulance service to the province. Before that it was horse and buggy. Part of the intent was to get to rural areas more easily.” Edwards says, it was the “first” to be offered in the province. Another “first” for the province came in 1970, when Arnold and Evelyn Edwards opened Prairie View Chapel and Crematorium. Until then those wishing cremation were required to have their deceased loved one transported by train to Winnipeg – a problem that demonstrated the need for a crematorium to the Edwards. Edwards family experiencing a need for such services first-hand. “When our family dog, Jasper, passed away, we found out that, for the cremation service we wanted, we had to send her to Winnipeg – much like what my grandfather had found with cremation services in 1970.” Edwards notes that for many the death of a loved family pet can be an extremely difficult yet important time, and for children it is often their first experience with death and loss. “We were the first, and remain the only, funeral service provider to operate a pet crematorium in Canada. It is a completely independent operation with a dedicated full time licensed funeral director on site at the facility because we feel that it is important to handle the loss of a pet with the same care, sensitivity and attentive service.” Strongly upholding the values and mission of four generations before him, Edwards and the entire Saskatoon Funeral Home team remain the longest serving, locally owned and operated full service funeral and cremation providers in Saskatoon. From pre-planning funerals for countless families – a service Edwards feels is of utmost importance and a valuable gift to your loved ones at the time of your passing – to ensuring family members receive professional and helpful service during a time of loss, Saskatoon Funeral Home is committed to continuing the tradition of meeting the growing needs of those in the community, today and in the future Edwards explains.

ale Soles and Robert Cremers are perfect examples of the entrepreneurial spirit that continues to build the West. Growing up, the business partners learned the value of hard work, planning and dedication early, and each knew he wanted to guide his own path through life. Combining their skill sets as adults, they embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, acquiring Abacus Signs in Saskatoon in June 2013. In business since 1979, Abacus Signs utilizes cutting-edge technology to produce a wide variety of interior and exterior signage. From the smallest decals to large billboards, Abacus Signs can take

the simplest concept and turn it into a spectacular product. With their largeformat digital printers, the company is able to print on canvas, wood, plexiglass — almost anything except paper. A new partnership with a wholesale business that provides cheque stock, envelopes, letterhead and other paper products enables Abacus’ customers to have their logos and artwork on these products, as well. The company has also expanded its vehicle wrap services to include RVs, boats, buses and snowmobiles as well as on-site installations. When Dale and Rob took over the business, they were thrilled when nearly all the staff made the decision to stay
on, guaranteeing that customers would continue to receive the same excellent service and quality products as before. Indeed, Abacus Signs and its employees were recently recognized for their ethical business practices and social responsibility by being one of three provincial businesses nominated for the 2014 Better Business Bureau Torch Award. hen Daryl Cooper first decided to leave the banking industry, his plan was to become a financial planner. “I realized there was a great disconnect between what was being offered and what was being provided. There was too much selling and not enough advice.” That was almost 20 years ago when Cooper left a 14-year banking career to establish his own wealth management business. Today, Cooper and his team manage more than $200 million for roughly 200 clients. His clients include professionals, farmers, small businesses, associations and retirees, as well as many folks from the mining and university fields who roll their pensions over to his group for management. They are especially attracted to the protection and uniqueness of Cooper’s proprietary money management system, a system unlike any other in the province. “We work with people that either do not have the time nor the expertise to take care of their own financial affairs,” says Cooper. “Being a discretionary money manager allows me to take care of your financial life while you focus on other areas that are important to you, such as work, travel or spending time with family.”

“I was pretty naive when I first started”, Cooper laughs. “I quickly realized once I got into the business that there was so much to offer, and to try and be everything to everyone wouldn’t best serve my clients. It is cliché but a jack-ofall-trades is a master of none.” Today, Cooper works with a large team of experts, each specializing in their field of mastery. “I couldn’t do what I do without a great team. I have three of the most wonderful associates who have been with me for many years. Raymonde Earle, Aleshia Abtosway and Ashley Giberson are invaluable at providing the best possible service to our clients. Recently, I brought on my first partner who brings a wealth of experience to the table. My association with ScotiaMcLeod gives my clients access to the most exceptional financial professionals available anywhere. Kara Baker is the best financial planner I have ever worked with. It is people like her that allow me time to focus on managing portfolios.” Along TOP L- R D-Nay Stockbrugger, advisor; Wyn Kanyogonya, senior will and estate planner; Raymonde Earle, investment associate; Aleshia Abtosway, administrative associate

with Kara Baker, a CFP and Chartered Professional Accountant, is Colin Aldorfer, who oversees one of the country’s largest teams of insurance and estate planning groups, and Wyn Kanyogonya, who is Scotia’s senior will and estate planner. Cooper is a discretionary portfolio manager and director of wealth management at ScotiaMcLeod in Saskatoon. “There is a Chinese proverb: ‘May you live in interesting times.’ Well, I can say I have. I’ve seen the craziness of the late 1990s and lived through two major crashes, 2002 and 2008. After 2008, I decided there had to be a better way to manage money. It seemed unreasonable to me to tell people that ‘buy and hold’ was the only way to go. So I started an exhaustive search for the answer and found it. We hire outside consultants that utilize a very strict rules-based approach. An approach that eliminates academic theory, such as buy and hold, eliminates market timing and eliminates economic forecasting.
The process is unbiased, unemotional and objective. Anyone managing money without a system that can provide advance guidance of upcoming storms is literally flying a plane without radar. Our No. 1 protection instrument is our equity action call. This tells us whether we should be invested into the market or not. If the equity action call is negative we are in bonds or somewhere equally safe. Our system is exceedingly factbased and employs hard and fast rules. There is no guessing. It runs generally on auto pilot. But just like flying, you are not getting into a jumbo jet without a pilot at the helm, and that is my job: to run the controls, check the radar and make the adjustments when required. We couldn’t disagree more with buy and hold which we believe leaves investors to ride out the waves and willingly losing money!”
discretionary portfolio manager, Daryl Cooper, along with ScotiaMcLeod’s team of experts and the advice of three outside consulting firms, are all paying acute attention to market trends on a daily basis and responding accordingly with an equity action call. With this plan you can say goodbye to tension-filled sleepless nights and rest easy, focusing your time and attention on what matters most to you: your family, your friends and your work. askatchewan is booming. Over the last few years, we’ve seen remarkable growth across the province. As our community flourishes so, too, do the demands on local businesses. Now is the time for companies to raise the bar when it comes to attracting and retaining talent, strengthening community ties, and breaking down borders to new economic

opportunities for the province. EY is one company that has demonstrated its commitment to supporting local businesses as they embark on their next stage of growth. The firm is celebrating 150 years of business excellence in Canada — an impressive accomplishment in a century-and-ahalf that has seen unprecedented change at an ever-increasing
pace. It’s a testimony to the firm’s flexibility, adaptability and forward thinking that it has not only survived the ups and downs of the turbulent 20th century, but has continued to expand and thrive well into the 21st. Just two years ago, EY merged with Hergott Duval Stack LLP — the province’s largest independent accounting, tax and business advisory firm — and that was just the beginning. Less than a year later, EY added SRED Automation to its family, a boutique firm specializing in navigating Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive programs. EY now offers clients access to variety of services that span from SR&ED tax credit support to crossborder taxes. These services are more important than ever as Saskatchewan continues its unparalleled growth. The province’s population topped the 1.1 million mark for the first time ever in July 2013 — growing by more than 100,000 people in the last six years, according to the provincial government’s most recent Saskatchewan Plan for Growth progress report. The report also details how Saskatoon and Regina are projected to have the strongest economic growth among Canadian cities. “It’s an exciting time in Saskatchewan,” says Evan Shoforost, EY’s Saskatchewan managing partner. “Our rich natural resource base and agricultural production is attracting the attention of players the world over. There’s a profound opportunity for companies to thrive along with the economy. That’s why we’re dedicated to continually expanding our depth of experience and service offerings for our clients.” The firm points to a number of trends taking place in Saskatchewan and how local companies can embrace change to lay a foundation for future success. BREAKING DOWN BORDERS Globalization is expanding horizons for companies across Saskatchewan. Trade, technology and investment increasingly connect countries and companies around the world. It’s also compressing time and distance as people and products move faster than ever before. with the rest of the world — and so is EY, with its local ties and global reach. Exports in the province increased from $29.6 billion in 2011 to $32.6 billion in 2012. That’s a 10 per cent increase. There’s the distinct advantage of proximity to the U.S., too. But that’s not all. As Saskatchewan continues to attract big business and expand its resource industry, more and more global players are taking notice. Companies undertaking new growth and expanding outside of Saskatchewan require a unique set of services and support. EY is leading the charge and connecting local business with the world. “In our global world, a company’s strategic advantage is tax. We’re proud to build on Hergott Duval Stack’s innovative tax practice and continue leading local companies through, often, unchartered territory by offering crossborder tax services,” says Ryan Ball, partner and EY Saskatoon tax leader. “It’s our primary goal to provide today’s business owners with the advice and support necessary to succeed in a booming economy.”

EY also currently serves companies in more than 150 countries and territories, a major differentiator in the local market. There are few organizations with the geographic reach and depth of talent that EY encompasses, and they’re committed to growing this talent and fostering greater collaboration globally. BROADENING THE WORKFORCE Thriving industry is attracting talent from around the world to Saskatchewan — and EY. Today’s workforce is more diverse than ever. And with that diversity comes new skills and experiences to help propel
companies forward. Yet many companies fall flat in understanding how to tap into and capitalize on that diversity. EY believes their people are their greatest asset — and it shows. The company embeds inclusiveness into every policy and program they create. The firm is encouraging others to adapt a similar mindset and embrace the vast diversity available in Saskatchewan. Failure to address inclusiveness issues can hinder a company’s ability to innovate, attract clients and partners, or keep pace with industry.

Mapping Your Family's Future A wealth map allows us to simplify the complicated. Like many of our clients, we’re busy family men who have hectic lives outside the office. Keeping track of our schedules, to-do lists and grocery shopping can feel complicated enough. We’re all about simplifying things — what we can, when we can! Many activities we recommend for our clients are complicated. Because our firm’s goal is to help improve our clients’ lives, it’s very important for us to make sure our clients understand complicated plans before they are adopted. Using a wealth map allows us to illustrate complicated things so that our clients can understand how the plan integrates with their goals.
Wealth maps are easy to change. We know things change. We know what happens today impacts tomorrow, and while we establish plans and goals, things will come up along the way. When a client asks a question about how a particular strategy affects other parts of their life, we can show them the relationships between different activities. More importantly, when we make changes in the plan (and we almost always make changes), it’s easy to illustrate what they look like.
Wealth maps engage the entire brain.
Our firm is made up of real people who lead synergistic lives, and we build this reality into our practice. Written plans mainly use the left hemisphere or the logical side of the brain. Wealth maps not only engage the left brain, but also use the right brain. This allows the client to look at the plan in a holistic manner, where they can see and feel the effect of the entire plan. Just as we understand how family relationships are multi-dimensional, we know our clients’ plans and goals are, too.
ASSANTE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT LTD
As advisors it is our job to look at our clients’ overall situation and recommend a course of action we believe best suits them. Because we are family men, we understand details can get lost in translation. The wealth map helps us to extract information that has been lost in the daily shuffle we all go through.
As time goes on, wealth maps easily track changes. Most plans we install require changes from time to time. Using a wealth map allows us to track changes and show the effect those changes make. We keep growth charts for our children to see how much they’ve changed over time. We keep photo albums of family trips so we can reflect on important moments and how they’ve brought us to where we are now. One of our goals is to help clients visualize what effect a plan might have on their life. Will the plan make their life better? Using a wealth map that visually represents a plan can help a client both understand and see it. The more senses we can engage when working with clients, the better off they will be. When you have your plans mapped out for you, it’s easy to see where you’re going and where you’ve been. Much of the stress or anxiety associated with your financial future is alleviated. When you sit down with us, we listen to what is important to you. Using a wealth map efficiently fits a plan to your specific situation and gives you peace of mind to enjoy your family. We know just how precious that time is.

Launching the Luxurious 2015 Lexus NX:
A STEP ABOVE THE REST
“I
t’s unlike any other SUV in its category,” says Doug Herbert, product specialist for Lexus College. He’s talking about the thrilling 2015 Lexus NX. With a more cutting edge design and new exciting new performance technology, the 2015 NX has been created with a more youthful appeal than its predecessors. According to Herbert, the design of the 2015 NX originated with the power of

performance vehicles. “The 2015 NX unites the engineering input of racers with the sophistication and class of Lexus luxury,” he continues.
Because of the kick-down function of the new transmission, the hybrid offers the powerful thrill that drivers have come to expect from other Lexus vehicles.
The 2015 NX is available in two aweinspiring models, the NX 200t with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and the NX 300h hybrid. This now means that Lexus offers six hybrid vehicles to choose from; that’s more than any other luxury brand to date.
Is venturing into unexpected weather a possibility for you? Both NX models offer their own version of pro-active all-weather drive (AWD). Just seeing the Lexus NX is a pleasurable experience. The excitement in Herbert’s
voice is unmistakeable as he describes the look of this edgy compact SUV. “The designers wanted something that would ‘pop’ and the NX definitely turns heads,” he comments. While still upholding the Lexus tradition of impeccable quality; the Lexus NX features a sportier design that’s not only aerodynamic but very pleasing to the eye. The Lexus NX was designed in Japan by a team of innovative designers Takkakaw Kato, Keiichi Nishiyama, Hiroshi Inoue and Sunao Ichihara. The team have a history of racing and advanced automotive design with Lexus. Together they focused on optimal performance while targeting fuel efficiency. As a result the new 2015 Lexus NX features a number of Lexus ‘firsts’ which include: • The all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine has a combination water-cooled cylinder head, integrated exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger. • A kick-down switch in the hybrid, which, as in conventional vehicles, ensures maximum power is delivered when required. • The front axle adopts a pre-load differential to control differential torque. It assists turning on slippery roads and straight-line stability at high speed. • Standard energy-efficient LED headlights and taillights. • Touch-sensitive interior lamp switches in the headliner. Detail, detail, detail; you can rely on Lexus to pay close attention to everything right down to the last bolt. As you get into the Lexus NX you quickly get the thrilling feeling of sitting in a sports car. The NX dashboard and console continue the Lexus concept of display and operational zones. The seats, inspired by sports car
design, coddle driver and passenger as you’d expect from a Lexus. “When you’re sitting in the seats you actually feel at one with the vehicle; like you’ve become a part of it,” remarks Herbert. Driver and passenger comfort are a must Lexus as the NX offers available heated or heated and ventilated front seats. Standard dual-zone automatic climate control is also available as it offers an available fuel-saving S-Flow mode that detects a front passenger and directs airflow only to the occupied front seat or seats. Let’s not forget safety! Famous for their high standards in this area, the Lexus NX comes standard with eight airbags. A precollision system will give audible warnings prior to preparing the vehicle for impact. Other features include lane departure alert and an all speed cruise control system that allows you to maintain a safe speed when following vehicles. “When we do it, we do it right!” exclaims Herbert, “We are all about detail.” He goes on to explain that the Lexus NX is equipped with premium lighting throughout which leaves no black spots on the exterior of the vehicle. This includes LED lighting in the door handles which serve as puddle lamps. There are far too many amazing features on the 2015 Lexus NX to list. Herbert encourages everyone to watch for the launch of this electrifying luxury SUV in November 2014 when it will be introduced to 80 anxiously awaiting markets around the globe. “It’s an exciting time for Lexus and I’m very proud to be part of such a great brand,” he adds. www.lexus-int.com
