n recent years there have been big changes in the world of small businesses, especially when it comes to the arts. Artistentrepreneurs are exploring new ways to reach their target customers and make a living, usually by cutting out the middle man. We see this in a huge way in the culinary arts, where food trucks have stolen the show. Customers are loving it. Similarly, it is becoming more common to see your favorite local musician playing at a house concert rather than an expensive venue, and photographers and painters often collaborate by sharing studio spaces. As a fashion designer, I am most excited about the wave of pop-up shops and handmade designer markets sweeping across Canada that have made their way to Saskatoon over the past few years. Although craft fairs have been around for a long time, the new era of designer markets is working to overturn the old stereotype of what these shows are like; typically the first thing that comes to mind is grandma’s crocheted doilies and whittled wooden toys. But did you know you could go to a craft fair and listen to live bands, drink a cocktail, and shop from photographers, jewelry and fashion designers, and artists of all forms? That was the scene this past weekend at Mix & Match, a Saskatoon Fashion & Design Festival pop-up shop held at Village Guitar & Amp on 20th Street West. Here my Rebecca King sweaters and coats were available at off-the-rack prices along with an awesome variety of other handmade goods, such as Sova hats and Laurie Brown apparel.

Jewellery Boutique offers stunning Vintage Pieces By Nykea Marie Behiel Photos TaMMy PoorMaN
“I
initially got turned onto jewellery by sitting at my mother’s dressing table trying in her rhinestones,” says Sherry Neufeld nostalgically. From building her own collection of jewellery, to setting up stands at the flea market, to finally opening up a shop, Sherry’s passion has fuelled her success. While she first opened the store on Lorne Avenue, Sherry moved to her new downtown location this July. “Everything just came together. That’s how I knew it must be right,” says Sherry. She feels fortunate to have had

excellent contractors who assisted with the renovations of the new location, as well as the Drinkle Building owner and Women Entrepreneurs, not to mention the full support of her husband, family, and good friends. Walking into Back Then & Again, you feel as though you have been transported to a different time. Music from the ’50s and ’60s fills your ears, pictures of Marilyn Monroe on the walls, and a homey feel make you instantly feel comfortable and welcome. Situated in the Drinkle building, which will be 100 years old next
year, Back Then & Again has the perfect backdrop invoking history and character. On the weekend, they often play old films and television shows in the store as well. “Often couples come in and the women look for a long time, so it’s good to have something for the men too,” says Sherry smiling. The shop is laid out like a house with a cool boutique vibe. Jewellery is displayed in genres such as the ’40s, Egyptian, and cameos. There is everything from old costume jewellery through to pieces made from genuine gold and precious
stones. The store is full of the most stunning vintage pieces. The finely detailed silver of the ’40s, the multilayered necklaces of the ’50s, and the bright and vibrant pieces of the ’60s— all of it can be found here. Sherry is particularly interested in pieces that evoke an era. Sherry’s knowledge of jewellery is astounding. When possible, items are catalogued with whatever research is available, including era and quality. Sherry also does appraisals by appointment, helping you understand the value of your grandmother’s old jewellery, or even a piece you found at a garage sale. If she doesn’t know about something, she takes that as an opportunity to do some more research. To say it is her passion would be an understatement. She is constantly searching out the best of the old and working to accommodate her clients. Since much of the old jewellery is too small, Sherry tastefully adds length or clasps where needed, making it wearable. Sherry has customers from Toronto, Vancouver, and even Montreal, who tell her there’s no shop like this, fully dedicated to vintage jewellery, in
their cities. Saskatoon is very lucky to be home to this innovative and unique shop. “She’s very talented and even outfits people for their weddings,” fills in Sherry’s husband, Harvey, who also works at the store. He is good with photography, and is always updating their Facebook page with Sherry’s newest finds. If you like jewellery, then you will love this store. The atmosphere, the astounding collection, and Sherry’s expansive knowledge will ensure you enjoy yourself. FLS

Lingerie Shopping Made Fun By Nykea Marie Behiel Photos DaNielle larsoN

any women have negative thoughts and connotations when they think about shopping for bras, lingerie, or swimsuits. Michelle Naidu and the staff at Change Lingerie in the Lawson Heights Mall are working hard to change that. “We want to change people’s perceptions about what that experience is like,” explains Michelle. Primarily a bra store, Change carries bras, swimwear, lingerie and nightwear. Their bras come in a wide size selection. With bands from 28 to 44, and cups from A to K, women of all shapes and sizes can outfit themselves here. The staff knows that it can be a difficult process to find a swimsuit to fit as well as your bra, which is why they carry swimwear in the same size options all year round as well. “You really can’t find that size range anywhere, especially at our price point,” says Michelle. It is important to her to offer sizes for all women at affordable prices. The value for money spent is not imitated anywhere else in the city. Michelle and her mother Bev own the store and keep a small staff that consists of all original members since the store opened in December of last year. Bev ran a lingerie store for many years, bringing plenty of expertise with her to Change Lingerie, and the majority of the staff have also been in the industry for many years. “I love interacting with people. This is something many people are uncomfortable with. Many people hate bra shopping. It’s so nice to have people come in and find their size,” effuses Michelle. The customers are as diverse as you can imagine—from young girls coming in for their first bra through to grandmothers, everyone can find something tasteful at Change. “We cater to pretty much everybody,” says Michelle. “We have something for everyone whether that be something lacy, plain or anything in between.” Everything Change carries is designed Jasmine in Vintage Cherry

The store is also starting to host private shopping parties in house. Splurge groups, stagette parties, birthdays, or any reason you can find to celebrate, Michelle and her staff love to open up the store after hours for some fun shopping. The staff licenses and caters the event so you can peruse lingerie while sipping on a glass of wine. The spacious store has a relaxed atmosphere that is a perfect backdrop to enjoy some time with your friends.

Cut of a Diamond
T
o ordinary people cut is interpreted as the shape, but to the experts, that’s just not the case. Cut is much more complex than emerald, heart, princess, marquise, pear, or oval. Rather, it has to do with the finish—the polish and the symmetry. Polish refers to the smoothness of the facets on each ridge of the cut. A poor polish can create a dull, blurred look and appear to radiate less light. Symmetry is the alignment of the facets; each precise cut in the rock. Under a microscope, a diamond with perfect symmetry has the appearance of a snowflake. Dark spots and less scintillation are signs of poor symmetry, meaning the light does not reflect evenly. A good cut is likely the most important trait to look for when shopping for a diamond. When you purchase a

diamond, the cut will dictate the beauty, luminance, and optical performance. When searching for a diamond on the Internet, it is impossible to tell the quality of the cut. Even when all other factors remain the same—clarity, size, and shape—a poor cut grade can make the diamond look inadequate. There can also be issues if the stone is set too shallow or too deep, or if the shape is narrow rather than built with appealing proportions. Holiday Gift Giving with Style and Beauty
Gift something to yourself
Tammy Mclean
Angles SalonSpa 201 1st Avenue South (Main Door Midtown Plaza) Saskatoon 306.653.4247 www.anglessalonspa.com
One approach to dealing with a stressful holiday season is to turn your mind away from any stressful thoughts. Instead, enjoy some well-deserved “me time.” Picture candle light, a soothing aroma, and tranquil music. Gradually begin to imagine yourself “unwinding” and “recharging your batteries.” When you return to your current world, bring these newfound feelings of life and renewed energy back with you. Examples of some relaxing rituals available at Angles are the popular Healing Stone Massage, the Fire and Ice Facial, or the “Touched by an Angel” treatment.
Give the gift of time
“Self-Indulgence is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity few of us make the time for.”
A
fter recently returning from a European training course, I am reminded of how in North America we “live to work” as opposed to the European belief “work to live.” Europeans are always taking time for friends, family, food, a good wine and, most importantly, themselves. So going into the holiday season that is full of hustle and bustle, I invite you to consider these things:
18
FineLifestyles
saskatoon
There is one gift that is more valuable than anything bought in a store, more appreciated than anything wrapped in pretty paper, and sure to be remembered for years to come: your time. My favorite thing to see during the holidays are friends, family or co-workers offering their “presence” instead of presents. Give a gift certificate for a specific spa service and join the recipient for the occasion. The gift of your time and some well-deserved relaxation is priceless— and much more likely to have a positive impact on the recipient’s life. Group pedicures are a great way to relax and catch up with friends. At Angles, we can include food and beverages to make it even more enjoyable. This is also an excellent idea for a small office holiday celebration.
Enjoy a stay-cation with someone you love with a relaxing steam or soak bundled with side by side massages. The perfect getaway without going away or breaking the bank.
Gift Certificates . . . Wise money spent Gift cards offer flexibility because they can be used at any time for any service and never expire. I can’t begin to tell you how many times someone has come in for the first time with a gift card saying that was the “best present” and “I would have never treated myself.” Many hours are devoted to training the highly motivated Angles team, and it is truly rewarding to know we have aided in making someone’s hour, day, week or holiday season just a little bit brighter and more relaxed. At Angles, we embrace the “Culture of Total Beauty and Relaxation.” We want to wish all our guests and all of you a safe and happy holiday season. Remember to take time for yourself and give time to others. Cheers! FLS Walk-ins welcome. Gift cards available in store or online at www.anglessalonspa.com

f you haven’t been in Traxx for a while, you probably think it’s a working shoe store mainly for men. Well, you’re wrong—in the last several years Traxx has done a complete overhaul, and lucky for us fashionistas and businesswomen! “People are always surprised by the huge selection when they come in here,” says owner Bob Miller. I know I definitely was. The large store is filled with a huge variety of shoes, mostly women’s. Carrying perhaps the widest selection of women’s shoes in all of Saskatoon, Traxx is one of the city’s best-kept secrets, but not any more. Fashion forward women are finally beginning to recognize the gem in the Grosvenor Park Mall. Gorgeous knee high boots for fall, sexy ankle booties, curvy heels, and comfortable running shoes—Traxx has it all. Bob has a ton of beautiful boots for fall, studded with buttons, accented with buckles, texture rich, full of colour, a truly vast selection. The most astounding thing in the store is surely the array of colours. While many
shoe stores are muted with blacks, greys, and neutrals, Traxx is vibrant and rich. Flipping through any fashion magazine, we can see that coloured and patterned shoes are here to stay, and looking through Traxx’ selection is absolutely divine. Picture boots in deep plum over dark jeans, or leopard print slip ons with leggings and a black dress, or maybe a chunky blue suede wedge with coloured jeans . . . The possibilities are endless.
materials, these shoes are durable and comfortable while being stylish.
While aesthetics of Bob’s collection are striking, he never lets comfort and functionality slide. All shoes in the store are high quality and practical. Carrying more brands than can be named, like Miz Mooz, Tsubo, Mjus, as well as classics like Sorel and Merrell, there is something for everyone. “We have customers from Toronto, Montreal—all across Canada. this year. “In February, I was told it was time to hang up my scissors due to my adult-onset allergies,” says Kris. “However, instead of giving up my passion for hair, I started doing some research.” Kris was shocked to learn that the styling products she’d been using for years were full of nasty chemicals that were making her sick. Her research led to her to the decision to open her own salon, using products that were good for her, her clients, and the environment.
Cliptomania carries the Eufora International line of hair care products— with no synthetic fragrances, sodium laureth sulfate, carcinogenic or suspected carcinogenic ingredients. Eufora uses organic aloe vera as its base. “Many people are afraid of natural hair products,” says Kris. “But these do the same job as traditional products without all the ‘crap.’” The salon also boasts the Black brand hair care line. “You can wash your hair
Cliptomania revolutionizes hair in Saskatoon once a week and still have friends,” quips Kris. “These products really cut down on the maintenance your hair will require.” Kris has even sourced organic hair colour—excellent for pregnant women looking to keep up their colour without any ammonia getting near their “bump.” The salon also blends its own hair products, customized for every hair type. Cliptomania’s exclusive Hair Smoothies are made onsite with natural ingredients, specific for each client’s needs. “You can have a Smoothie treatment with

Kris has made getting your hair cut fun with hip tunes, delicious beverages, plenty of magazines and some “hair-apy” for every client. “We see ourselves as not just stylists, but ‘hair-apists,’” adds Kris. “We want you to love your hair and your salon experience every time you come in.” Cliptomania offers all of the customary salon services— hair styling, hair extensions, hair colouring, makeup, facial waxing and nail colouring—with an extra emphasis on service. Kris and her team will teach you about your hair type, and how to style and maintain your look between appointments. Cliptomania also offers group services for wedding parties, and will even bring along a bottle of champagne to celebrate the bride’s special day. Kris keeps all her clients informed about specials, new products and everything you’d ever want to know about her salon with Cliptomania’s Facebook page: facebook. com/cliptomania. “We update it all the time,” says Kris. “There’s always something going on with our page. ‘Like’ us and stay up-to-date with our monthly giveaways, product information, and hair and make-up education. Plus, we’ll be on Twitter very soon.” And if Cliptomania sounds like a fun place to have your hair done, it’s also a fantastic place to work. Kris is always looking for experienced stylists that want to work in a great salon with a casual, cool atmosphere. “If you’re a stylist looking for something new, pop in and say hi. I’d love to meet you,” says Kris. To experience some hair-apy with Kris and her team, call 306.668.6611 for an appointment. NEW HAIR,
NEW YOU Making a decision for a new look always includes getting a new style or haircut at the salon. Some people bring in photos of looks they want and most have an idea of the image they want to portray. Your style should be a reflection of your lifestyle and your personality. So what style best reflects your personality?
Traditional— Conservative A blunt cut is always professional to suit your style. A classic look that is always in vogue and looks good whether relaxing on the weekend or taking control in the boardroom.
Pick a short flirty style with highlights and lots of layers to match your vibrant personality. Short hair always looks healthy just like you do.
A shoulder length style that has a lot of layers will fit your no-nonsense approach to life with wash and wear hair. There is little fuss involved and it always looks well groomed. Keeping your hair at shoulder length also allows you to pull it back into a pony tail for times when you just want it off your face to do those tasks at hand.
The right hairstyle can help you approach your day with confidence. Keep in mind with the holiday season whether you will want a formal up-do or even embellish your current style with some hairpieces.
Artistic and Modern—Likes Fashion Go for a creative haircut that reflects your style. Think Betty Paige with an edge. Choose multiple colours like pink or purple tips or highlights on multilayers that you can use gel to spike or blow dry flat. Bangs are in style now. Big bold bangs that create a fringe almost down to your lashes to highlight those twinkling eyes of yours.

ettled comfortably on the living room couch of her Saskatoon home, Saskatchewan born-and-based actress and performer, Amy Matysio, appears at ease while taking a short break from her performing lifestyle. Matysio recently wrapped up Regina’s Globe Theatre production of the Scottish play Midsummer [A Play With Songs]. Matysio and costar, Clinton Carew, played two people going through hard times. Bob and Helena come together for a weekend, spend money wildly, and take stock of their own lives. “They rediscover themselves,” explains Matysio. “They find the playfulness in each other. Together, they change.” Matysio has been stage acting for several years. Perhaps her most memorable performance was in the Globe Theatre’s 2010 The Syringa Tree. “It was a one-woman show in which I played over 20 characters and somewhere around 15 regional South African dialects.” Preparing for that performance was a feat. “I started working on the dialects about four months ahead of time,” explains Matysio. “It was hard and it was amazing. When you think you can’t do something and you push your body and your mind so far [with the amount of text alone], suddenly all the work begins to transcend your own awareness of it, and it just starts to come together. It’s one of those shows that I had so much to learn. Realistically, I never actually thought it was going to come together at all.” Her experience with The Syringa Tree is one Matysio appreciates. “I know what I put into it, and I know that what I got out of it. It taught me so much about myself as a performer, about the personal drive and work ethic required . . . you know, I had to cut out a lot of the drinking!”
The hilarious web series inSAYSHAble (www.insayshableonline. com) was created, written and co-produced by Matysio, in conjunction with Mind’s Eye Entertainment. This mini-series looks

at a week in the life of Saysha: a bold, awkward, yet lovable character born from Matysio’s imagination. “She was a character that I had been making notes about for a long time. I’d been thinking about how to take that character to the next level,” explains Matysio. “Friends in the industry said things like, ‘You should consider writing a web series.’ It honestly never dawned on me until the idea was put in front of me.” Directed by Jeff Beesley, inSAYSHAble was a team effort Matysio remembers fondly. “I got to work with some artists from my comedic circles, like Christina [Sicoli] who plays Fran—she’s such a good friend of mine. It was a really great opportunity to collaborate and play these strong, audacious female characters, and make them messy and not always pretty. That’s what makes comedy so fun.” Mind’s Eye producer Mark Montague worked with Matysio. “We’d been friends since elementary school, so it was a great coming together after all these years working near each other in film and TV.” The closeness of the film industry is something Matysio admires. “The amazing thing about Saskatchewan is that it’s such a small and unique community. It is also one of the saddest things about the community disbanding and going away—you’re losing your friends, but you’re also losing these incredibly talented colleagues.” This spring, the provincial government cut the Film Employment Tax Credit, putting enormous strain on the industry. Matysio had a lead role in the movie known as Saskatchewan’s last big one: Stranded. “The last few days [of filming] were very bittersweet. We were making this really fantastic film and it was such a rewarding experience with world renowned talent: the director [Roger Christian], Christian [Slater] . . . it’s heartbreaking, is what it was. It’s just really sad.” “Stranded was such an incredible opportunity for me,” continues Matysio. The science fiction thriller, produced by Mind’s Eye

Entertainment, was shot in Regina. It wasn’t the only film Matysio starred in within her home town. Just Friends (2005) was “the first time I got to work on a large budget film like that . . . learning the ropes, and being exposed to the big picture of how it all worked at that level. It was exciting for me and gratifying and fun. The role was great, and the people were amazing. I think I’ll always remember that as one of my favorite projects in Saskatchewan.”
understood how to make somebody laugh. I think when you figure that out, it’s the best thing ever. Making someone laugh is awesome.” She notes that she’d love to one day collaborate with Julia LouisDreyfus. “I admire her career so much. She’s hilarious yes, but also a strong actress who makes incredible comedic choices. I’d love to sit down and have lunch with her, laugh with her and create with her.”
Matysio believes that hard work and perseverance pays off. “Work begets work. And I’m one of those people who will keep working until I get those big jobs that I want.” She has an impressive list of credits behind her name already: the female lead, Chelsea, in the Single White Spenny television series; other television appearances including Corner Gas and Little Mosque on the Prairie; movie roles in Mulligans, Chained, Vampire Dog, Ferocious, Dolan’s Cadillac, Sleepwalking, and more.
Matysio sees more of the same in her future. In ten years, “I will be doing this for sure. I don’t see myself not doing this.” Matysio has worked hard for her roles, and admits there is a bit of a learning process. “It’s just me that I have to offer. When I go into an audition, I can’t put something on the table and say, ‘Look at that if you like it.’ You have to learn thick skin. You have to find inner confidence because you might not always have it on the outside . . . and always know that nobody owes you anything. You don’t get jobs just because you’re here. You still have to be the right person for the job.”
Since high school, Matysio has been doing improv, including more than a decade as a General Fools Improv Troupe member. “Comedy is people being honest and feeling comfortable enough to show us who they are. That’s what’s funny.” So what is it about improv that Matysio finds appealing? “One of the great things about the General Fools is that we all lead such different lives. So when we come together, it’s not like all our brains are all ‘actor’ brains. It’s a combination of different interests and careers. That’s great because you never know what’s going to come at you.”
“I’m a pretty loud person, a pretty strong woman, pretty ballsy girl. As my sister says, ‘please use your indoor voice more often.’” Recognizing that it’s important to have support, Matysio appreciates her family, friends and boyfriend. “My family has always been extremely supportive of me, both my parents—my mom is such a strong woman as well. I think I probably get a lot of my traits from her. They’ve always been very supportive, and will stand by my decisions, but they also know when I need to make it for myself. And that’s been really invaluable to me.”
With six Canadian Comedy Award nominations—five for her work with General Fools and one for her role on Single White Spenny— comedy is something Matysio has always enjoyed. “I’ve always

This fall, The Fretless won the 2012 Western Canadian Music Awards’ Instrumental Recording of the Year for their album Waterbound. Does Matysio have a musical side herself? “I sing and I play piano. The two are collaborating on a nonprofit venture to inspire and support kids to go into the arts. “I think it’s important to reach out and say this is the state of the arts, this is how you can enter, and this is how you can branch out. It’s about confidence, and finding it, and knowing you can have it.” Matysio adds, “I want to keep growing, and I want to keep learning. themselves about the symptoms they need to recognize and the questions they need to ask their doctors. I’m so proud of it.”
Matysio reflects on advice that she has received during her journey through the acting world. “There’s a piece of advice that floats with a lot of my friends: f– ’em if they can’t take a joke,” she laughs. “It really does just mean you have to have humor and humility. You have to work hard, and you have to go for things, but in the end, you have to still be happy with what you’re doing. Working to please others all the time is not going to get you very far. Comedy is great because you can use it to remind people how ridiculous we all are. So relax and learn to laugh. You’ll look younger!”
With a home base in Saskatoon and frequent travel to Regina, Saskatchewan is home for Matysio, and her love for her province is obvious. “It’s nice to have the downtime here. It’s quiet and calm and easy to get around. Every time I come back to Saskatoon, something has changed. I love the whole development with 20th [Street]. I love going to the farmer’s market on the weekend. Riversdale is just amazing—so much inspiring new energy. It’s cool. I want that whole street to fill up with bars and restaurants.”
Matysio has worked with the Canadian Cancer Society to host a series of candid videos about cancer and health. “I’ve done three for the ‘Real Men Screen’ campaign: testicular, colorectal and prostate cancers. We just finished a new project, more of a conversation about women’s cancer. We interviewed three incredible survivors and talked to them about their journeys. The new campaign is called ‘You Are Loved,’ and it’s to empower and inspire women start their own conversation—with their mothers, daughters, sisters, doctors and so on. On Matysio’s horizon is a new documentary series airing on CityTV. Launched in October, On Site takes a look at the mega projects all over the province. As the series host, Matysio laughs, “I went on a crazy adventure! It was great to explore what goes goes on in this province from an industrial perspective, meet people and ask them about what they’re doing.”
Passionate about her work and knowing she’s finding her place in the industry, Matysio confides, “Every time someone says, ‘I watched inSAYASHAble and you are funny,’ I think, ‘Thank you, that’s what I was trying to do.’” She adds, “I’m always going to want to make people laugh. How do I get out of a situation? I make a joke.” This charming and effusive Saskatchewan actress and performer continues to grow and succeed in her multi-faceted career. Matysio’s zest for life, her work ethic and her talent will carry her a long way. FLS

ltraShape Saskatoon, located with Saskatoon’s Lakeview Medical Clinic, offers new and proven technology to help improve your face and body without surgery, using non-invasive procedures and products. Any person who is healthy can undergo these procedures. The three main areas treated with UltraShape are the stomach, out thighs (saddle bags) and flanks (love handles). We have also treated enlarged male breasts, a common problem, with very satisfactory results.
How do the procedures work? The UltraShape machine uses ultrasound waves, which physically break down fat cells. Your body then removes fat, permanently, through your own metabolic system. The clinic has also introduced the EndyMed machine to our clients, a skin tightening procedure that can be used on its own as a non-invasive alternative to surgical procedures or to enhance the UltraShape treatment results. The EndyMed machine delivers radio frequency waves into the deepest layer of the skin to stimulate collagen production. It can be used on almost any area of the body and is ideal for most signs of aging, including jowl and neck laxity, face (non-surgical face lift) and post-natal abdomens. EndyMed also reduces the look of cellulite. Both
procedures are painless. patients can simply walk in, have their treatment and immediately resume their normal activities.
What other products and services do you offer? The clinic is pleased to offer BOTOX treatments. We are also a supplier of LATISSE, a prescription solution designed to grow eyelashes. tips for relieving a common cold by Shawna Common
It’s that time of year again when people start having the sniffles, and sneezing is a familiar sound. Since a cold is a virus, antibiotics are useless. What do you do if you start feeling the effects of the common cold? There are many home remedies for the common cold, from oldtime concoctions to modern practices. My grandmother swears by the popular old-time mustard plasters, and would slap one on anyone that started coughing. She is convinced that this is the best remedy for any sort of chest ailment, and my mother remembers many mustard plasters from her youth. You will need two heavy pieces of cotton (flannelette is best) the width and length of the infected person’s chest, a towel, cold cream or camphor oil, warm water and mustard powder. Mix the powder and water into a thick paste, and smear it between the two pieces of cotton. Cover the sick person’s chest with either cold cream or camphor oil; place the cotton combination on the sick person’s chest, and cover the whole thing with a thick towel. Leave the plaster on the person for anywhere from five to 20 minutes, then remove. Ensure the plaster is not left on too long, or the mustard will burn the skin. “If there are white blotches on the skin that’s the infection, and the plaster has now loosened the infection in the chest for the person to cough out,” says Grandma. The tried and true remedy of loosening chest and head congestion by holding your head over a bowl of steaming water has been around for generations. Putting a towel over your head and the bowl allows the steam to be concentrated and work faster—just be ready with lots of tissues. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the steaming water for an extra-effective result. The aroma of eucalyptus oil stimulates the sinuses and relieves

congestion from a cold. In addition to being used for steaming, the oil can be applied directly to the chest, neck or even the temples, allowing you to breathe better and relieve some aches associated with colds and flus. Have you ever heard of your parents or grandparents mention the hot toddy? This remedy combines a shot of whiskey (for “warmth”) with a teaspoon of honey (to soothe the throat). Add hot water, a few cloves and a cinnamon stick, and serve with a lemon wedge (for vitamin C). If whiskey isn’t your thing, soothe your sore throat with the tried and true salt water remedy. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle. Avoid swallowing the mixture—it won’t hurt you, but the taste is not the greatest. Of course, getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of fluids is always recommended. Get a head start on cold season by eating the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables and maintaining a healthy dose of sleep each night. FLS

olutions Weight Loss and Training offers a new answer to the old problem of losing weight. Their no-nonsense approach rejects fad diets and supplements like shakes, bars, and microwaveable meals, and instead focuses on giving clients an easy-tofollow, individualized plan. Krista Nikirk, the owner and founder of Solutions Weight Loss and Training, says her average client has tried four to eight different programs by the time they come to her.

“We want to be their last stop,” she said. “We don’t want them to go from me to another weight loss program. I want them to walk away from the experience knowing that they have figured out their triggers behind why they do what they do.” Solutions has been in business for over five years, but the centre just opened in May. Nearly 700 hours went into preparing the space, and it shows. It looks and feels like a spa—comfortable and relaxing. The 3,600 square foot centre includes a private weigh room, a 1,200 square foot private training studio,
and the biggest sauna in Saskatoon, so anyone of any size will feel comfortable in it. The support Solutions offers their clients is unparalleled, which is probably why their clients have had 100 per cent success when following the program. The program starts with a free consultation. The Solutions team gets to know the client, finding out details about his or her lifestyle, family, work life, and any emotional stress. Once they have a clear picture of the client’s life, they can create a personalized program.

The program for a salesperson who is always on the road will look completely different from a hockey mom who needs simple, quick meal ideas during the winter months. Each client gets a weekly personalized menu. No counting points or calories—the Solutions team does all the work for you. Krista’s cell phone is constantly buzzing with texts from clients asking for nutrition advice. They’re out and about and they don’t have time to make lunch: What’s the best option at Tim Horton’s? She has answered emails at 10 p.m. at night, helping clients make last minute changes to their menu plan based on what they have in their pantry. There’s no other program in Saskatoon that offers clients the same care and attention that Solutions does. Krista’s dedication stems from her own frustrating experiences with weight loss. When she started Solutions five years ago, she was 120 pounds heavier and had tried every program she could find. “Yes, they worked, but they were short term success,” she said. “Once you took away their plans, you had to go back to eating. Well, if I knew how to eat, I never would have struggled with my weight.” When Krista started Solutions, she wanted to create a program that solved the underlying problems with weight gain, and where participants didn’t have to buy bars, supplements, or shakes to succeed. “It was important to me for people to live their life. To go

That you’re eating every day food.” This season, Krista recommends to new clients the “Transformation Package,” asking why wait until the new year for a new you when you can start now? This package includes personal training, nutrition guidance, massage and sauna use, teeth whitening, and a photo shoot of the transformation with Dennica Wailing of Neek photography. Heather Since starting the program seven months ago, Heather has lost 60 pounds, and says the process has been much easier than she ever thought it would be. “I don’t feel deprived, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything,” says Heather. “You follow your menu and each week you get to pick the food your craving.” In fact, Heather anticipates the Solutions menu so much, that it was the first thing she looked forward to after returning from a week-long beach vacation.

ur automobile-focused cities are literally killing us.
A study from Toronto Public Health found that people who live in the suburbs there have higher rates of heart disease compared to people who live in the city centre. Why? Because the more you choose to drive instead of walking, biking, or taking public transit, the more likely you are to develop heart disease. Internationally-acclaimed city builder Ken Greenberg sums up the problem well: “The combination of the sedentary lifestyle where kids get shuttled from place to place, they hardly move around on their own, and sitting in front of their screens, has produced, among children especially, levels of diabetes of heart disease and obesity that we’ve never seen before, and it has everything to do with the fact that – simplified – they simply don’t walk anywhere.” Greenberg presented these startling facts to a sold-out crowd at the Broadway Theatre on September 20. The lecture was part of the kick-off event for Saskatoon’s first Park(ing) Day, held on September 21. An international event, the Park(ing) Day website describes itself as an event where artists, designers, and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks. Our cities are making us sick, and we need to make a change. Park(ing) Day is an attempt to show what our cities could look like if we did things a little bit differently. “The main reason for doing all this is to imagine, to experiment with city building,” said organizer Carrie Catherine. “What would our streets look like if they were designed not just for cars, but also for bicycles and public transit? And what if we gave more public space to people and not just cars? And that’s not anti-car, but it’s just adding to the equation and creating more balance.” That day, pedestrians and cyclists reclaimed 20th Street, closing one lane of traffic in each direction and creating “parklets” in parking stalls. There were 25 reclaimed stalls in all, featuring everything from pop-up yoga to miniature living rooms to a smoothie

stand. More parklets could also be found in the Broadway area and at the University of Saskatchewan. “Cities are living creatures,” said Greenberg. “They have enormous capacity to learn and adapt, and they do it by making experiments, by trying things. Not always by writing reports and doing long studies and being risk averse, but by taking chances, and showing people what could be done.”
Wallace also spoke at the Park(ing) Day kick-off event, outlining the cities brand new Integrated Growth Plan. Past city plans included more expansions
to the outskirts of the city, but in the new Integrated Growth Plan, they scaled back on how much Saskatoon will grow outward.
In Toronto, the average commute is 88 minutes per day, the highest in North America. And this is no small problem for the city: one estimate says this insanely long commute is a $6 billion drag on the economy. In Saskatoon, our average commute is only 15 minutes, but Alan Wallace, City of Saskatoon manager of planning and development, says that if we continue to grow outward with the same neighborhood density and the same street patterns, our future drive to work will be longer and more expensive, and the roads will be more congested.

The new plan aims to build within the city more, and to shift traffic to special corridors, to make streets like Idylwyld and 8th Street more pedestrian and cyclist friendly. But Wallace stressed that the new plan isn’t a war against cars. “We’re not trying to take choices away; we still want to be able to drive,” said Wallace. “What we want to do is give people better choices. We want to give you a variety of choices.” Greenberg explained that cities need to aim to create what’s called “complete streets.” These streets include planned space for transit, cycling, walking, and driving. On these streets, driving actually becomes easier because more people choose alternative forms of transportation, taking cars off the street. He also pointed out, though, that changing the direction of a city’s growth takes an extraordinary degree of teamwork. We need to engage all levels of government – federal, provincial, and municipal – and engage the private sector in landowners, developers, and communities. But the future is bright: Greenberg will be working as an adviser to Stantec Consulting, the firm that will be designing plans for Saskatoon’s downtown area, and he has high hopes for our modest prairie town. hat began as a small family endeavour in 1988 has become a secondgeneration business that has added many services and employees to their list over the years. Denis and Shirley Lalonde opened Golden Mobility 24 years ago in a small shop, not much larger than a garage. Now located on Hanselman Avenue on the North side of Saskatoon,Golden Mobility offers ample space for parking and a fully wheelchair accessible showroom for the convenience of their customers.
Having been involved in the process from the ground up, Denis’ son Aaron has recently taken over much of the workload. As a child, Aaron used to empty the garbage and help service scooters. He’s grown up around the industry and is happy to be stepping into a bigger role.
“It’s a very rewarding business,” says Aaron. “Getting to see our customers up and about on their own, seeing the direct influence, is amazing.” The people who work here are passionate about helping others. Golden Mobility offers a huge variety of services for people with mobility issues. From an injured foot through to severe restrictions, the compassionate staff are always working to figure out a unique solution that works for you. Golden Mobility services three main avenues—custom vehicles and adaptations, home accessibility products, and home medical equipment. When altering or building vehicles, a majority of the work is done in-house, meaning the skilled staff can listen to your needs and offer solutions that will work. “We can perform adaptations as small as installing a left side gas pedal
for someone with an injured right foot, all the way through to a full conversion with talking commands.” Having just recently expanded into home elevators and lifts, Golden Mobility is thrilled to offer services that can keep people in their homes for longer. They just installed a full elevator in a residence, giving the family comfort and peace of mind. An inexpensive alternative to a full elevator is a stair lift. Golden Mobility also offers home alterations like ramps and outdoor lifts to overcome obstacles like stairs and porches. Ceiling track systems are an effective way to transfer people out of bed and to the bathroom or a chair, and offer another solution. Depending on the level of mobility, the knowledgeable staff will help you decide what is right for your home. Home medical equipment, including scooters, walkers, and chairs, is another

“Freedom for everyone! Having a Ram elevator installed by the people at Golden Mobility has added a whole new perspective to all those within our family. It has opened up our home and made it accessible to our sons, giving them the ability to move around and get to the basement level, which means more space for everyone. The professionalism of all the staff involved in the project from Golden Mobility was second to none! The elevator was installed in the exact time frame that they had said, and, it came with no surprises. way Golden Mobility is able to help their clients. They offer high-end wheel chairs that weigh only a fraction of that provided by the government program, as well as other solutions. Golden Mobility was the first company in Saskatchewan to recognise a need for a wheelchair van rental program and provide that for the residents of Saskatchewan. “We really pride ourselves on service,” states Aaron. Renting a wheel chair accessible van is a personal way to help those that maybe don’t need to purchase an accessible van, but need one for family events once or twice a year. The only place in Saskatchewan and Alberta that builds rear entry conversions, Golden Mobility is known for their innovation and dedication. “Being that we fabricate that product, gives us control over the quality and saves the customers transportation costs,”says Aaron.
to ensure your needs are met. They also collaborate with many insurance companies and health coverage providers, and will help you through the battle to get the proper finances. “We recognise that this can be expensive for people, and we try to help all that we can,” says Aaron. “We’re out of the box thinkers. Sometimes an off the shelf solution doesn’t work for every person,” assures Aaron. The compassionate staff will work tirelessly to solve your mobility problems. “Relationships with customers are very important to us, and we work hard to build trust. We take care of the client first.” Golden Mobility & Rehab Ltd 2202 Hanselman Avenue Saskatoon, SK 306.242.9060 goldenmobility@shaw.ca www.goldenmobility.ca

elanie Wildman had been through it all—diets, pills, and exercises—the same things many people try to lose weight. “I’ve always struggled with my weight. I had gained and lost 70lbs several times over,” says Melanie. Four years ago she made the life changing decision to get bariatric surgery. Since that time, Melanie has lost over 100lbs from her highest weight and managed to keep it off. Even though Melanie had the support and encouragement of her family, she still felt alone. Since she had elected to have her surgery outside of Canada, there was nowhere for her to go for medical follow-ups and support. This troubling

experience lead Melanie to begin facilitating support groups for people in the same position. With nothing but positive reception, Melanie realized how badly professional services for postbariatric surgery patients are needed. So, Weight Loss Forever was born. Founder and CEO Melanie Wildman and her company Weight Loss Forever have come a long way since 2009. After two rigorous years of review, Weight Loss Forever has become Canada’s only Bariatric Centre with the International Centre of Excellence designation. The prestigious centre has also been designated one of the top ten hospitals in the world. These standards are not easy to come by, and assure patients
they will be in the best hands under the safest conditions. Weight Loss Forever has a luxurious and state-of-the-art medical facility where doctors are on duty around the clock, as well as a leading team of bariatric staff. Their chief surgeon, Dr. Liza Pompa, has an impeccable background in medicine. Acquiring her training at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, she is also the first woman in the World to achieve the surgeon of excellence designation and was recently featured in Newsweek. While brilliant and internationally acclaimed, Dr. Pompa is also professional and compassionate. Weight Loss Forever’s state-of-the-art hospital is astounding, but not the only

thing that sets Weight Loss Forever apart. The highly trained staff supports you before, during, and after your surgery, providing a variety of necessary, but often overlooked, services. This comprehensive approach includes on going education, support, pre and postoperative care, nutritional guidelines, support groups, social advocacy, an online program, and one on one support and encouragement. Staffed with nurses, councillors, personal trainers and nutritionists, Weight Loss Forever provides support each step of the way. Their multifaceted approach has demonstrated the large difference between patients who receive care post surgery, and those who do not. While the average wait time to get bariatric surgery in Canada is anywhere from 2-13 years, according to the Canadian Medical Association, Weight Loss Forever works efficiently to get their clients treatment within 4-8 weeks from when they are approved. The dedicated team will help you decide which type of surgery is right for you. Melanie and her staff track data on everything you can imagine— resolutions, health problems, depression, overall weight loss, psychological well being, and smoking to name a few. “It’s really the most critical part,” explains Melanie. Patients who follow the WeightLoss Forever program are much more successful overall, including losing about 23% more weight in their first year than those who are not compliant with the program. This is hugely significant, and can mean over 40lbs in a twoyear period. “What’s the point in having surgery without a program that can drastically increase your overall success and weight loss?,” questions Melanie. Compassionate and understanding staff are key to Weight Loss Forever’s goals and visions. Most of the staff have undergone surgery and their own struggle with weight loss, proving an air of confidence and understanding. “Losing weight frees you up to concentrate on all different kinds of things. It saves an amazing amount of emotional and intellectual energy,” explains Melanie. This means more time and energy for the things that are a priority in your life. On November 30th, Weight Loss Forever will be holding their annual Christmas party— the Little Black Dress Gala. Two of their top surgeons will be flying in, giving past patients and potential surgery candidates a chance to interact and ask questions. Weight Loss Forever will also be handing out awards to patients who have had great success. “Some of our patients have gone onto climb mountains and compete in triathlons. This just wouldn’t have been conceivable for them before surgery. It’s exciting,” effuses Melanie. All money raised

What You Need to Know About Cosmetic Surgery Research Your Surgeon
Not all surgeons are are created equal or have the same level of training or experience. Think about the game of golf – a weekend golfer will never make the PGA. Plastic surgeons are the same – the more procedures they have done with excellent results, the better their overall outcomes will be. It is also critical that you know their credentials. Verify that they have the training they are claiming and ensure your plastic surgeon is Board Certified. Seeing a certificate is not enough – always check directly!
See Real Examples of Their Work
If you are thinking about a facelift, ask for pictures of facelifts that your surgeon has actually done. If you are thinking about breast augmentation, ask to see pictures of breast augmentations. Be thorough in your research, after all – this is your body we are talking about!
Talk to Real Patients
It’s one thing to see beautiful before and after photos – but what do the people who have actually been through it have to say about their experience? How was the care? How well did the surgeon explain the procedures, risks and outcomes with them? How did they feel about their follow up care? Would they do it again? Would they recommend their surgeon to their own family?
Be Prepared
Leading up to your procedure, take extra care to eat healthy, fresh, low sugar foods that are high in protein. Make sure to drink lots of water and exercise – the healthier you are, the faster your recovery and the better your results will be. And read everything you can about the procedures you are considering. Knowledge is power!

harlie’s Seafood Market in Saskatoon wants you to have a great holiday season, and one way is to provide your guests with excellent snack treats. Charlie’s Seafood Market offers a variety of options for party platters for our customers, including corporate and private parties with some of the delectable platters including shrimp, sushi, smoked salmon and cream cheese balls.
For those adventurous types that want to create their own shrimp sensations, first you have to choose the size you want, and if you want shell on or off. You also have to choose if you want to buy the pre-cooked shrimp, or cook it yourself. Choosing the best quality is a bit of a challenge, but basically you want to make sure that they product you buy is not freezer-burned. Look for white spots on the shrimp whether it’s cooked or raw. Cooked shrimp should be pinkish-red in colour, and raw shrimp should be greyish with black or pinkish stripes depending on the species. High quality shrimp will have ice glazing to prevent freezer burn. High quality shell-on shrimp, whether cooked or raw, will also have the ice glazing to prevent freezer burn. Shrimp in the shell is of a higher quality, as it has been handled less because the quality is reduced the more the product is handled. Shrimp that is still in its shell also stays fresher longer.
You can now cook it as-is if you want to serve peel-and-eat shrimp, or you can remove the shell before cooking. To remove the shell peel the shell from the cut part, and you can either remove the tail or leave it on for presentation. Cooking time depends on the size of the shrimp, and can be from one to three minutes, for example jumbo shrimp take three minutes to cook. Ensure the water is at a rolling boil, and you have added the salt and seasoning. Cook shrimp in small batches to ensure water remains hot, and remove the shrimp from the pot and immediately place in the ice bath. Shrimp will continue to cook after it’s removed from the pot, and you don’t want to overcook your shrimp. For all your seafood needs, visit Charlie’s Seafood Market at 210B-3929 8th Street East in Saskatoon, call 306.955.7127 or check out our website at www. charliesseafood.ca.FLS
If you want to cook your own shrimp, you’ll need a large pot, salt, water, seafood seasoning and an ice bath (icy cold water). Take a small paring knife with the blade facing upwards and start at the head of the shrimp facing towards the back of the shrimp. Insert the knife under the shell and slowly work the knife to the tail while cutting the shell. In the cut spot on the back look to see if there is a vein, and remove if present with the knife by scraping it out.

Stroke your hand along the salmon fillet to check for any stray bones. If you find any, pull them out with a pair of tweezers or small pliers. Skin the salmon fillet (see Secrets from Gordon’s kitchen, opposite) and trim away the thinner part, plus any fat around the edges, so that the fillet has an even shape.
If serving as a plated starter, use a sharp carving knife to cut the salmon straight down into fine slices, allowing 6 slices for each plate.

oc Hollandaise restaurant offers affordable fine casual dining for Saskatoon residents. The restaurant serves high quality real foodmeat, seafood, cheese, ice cream, even the potatoes are hand cut. You won’t find processed cheese on your burger here. Instead it will be a thick cut of real cheddar on top of your ground sirloin burger. Doc Hollandaise is owned by Richard and Karen Bahnman. The husband and wife team have 35 and 34 years in the restaurant and hotel industry respectfully. Six years ago they opened the first Doc Hollandaise restaurant in Sutherland. Doc Hollandaise has recently

expanded to open a second location in the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in the Stonebridge neighborhood. The licensed restaurant serves breakfast until 4 p.m. everyday. Some of the most popular breakfast dishes, such as the banana bread french toast, are part of the menu’s All Day Favourites. Every Wednesday is Wild Wednesday at Doc’s. For $12, you can get a plate of ribs with garlic toast and a side of your choice. Doc Hollandaise doesn’t charge extra for sides such as baked potatoes and caesar salad. Doc’s famous ribs are one of the
restaurant’s signature dishes. The slow cooked baby back ribs are baked to perfection and coated in your choice of sauce. Chef Doc (Richard) is in the restaurant every day at 5:30 a.m. to start preparing them fresh. The ribs are so good that new customers have walked in off the street and asked for them. The ribs can also be ordered gluten-free. To celebrate the restaurant’s anniversary Doc offers all you can eat ribs in the month of March. Lemon pepper chicken fettuccine is another of Doc’s signature dishes. Its garlic cream sauce with mushrooms is made with 35% cream and is thickened with real parmesan cheese. Each order
of it is made fresh and individually. Doc’s namesake, the hollandaise sauce is draped on top of the four different versions of eggs benedict on the menu. The hollandaise sauce is also featured on the chicken cordon bleu, the chicken neptune and the steak neptune. Customers have the option of adding the hollandaise sauce to any dish on the menu. Doc Hollandaise has a delectable dessert menu, including a gluten-free chocolate almond torte served with homemade ice cream. Their famous homemade peanut butter pie is such a large portion it has to be shared by two. Drenched in chocolate sauce and whipped cream, the pie is a favourite at the Taste of Saskatchewan food festival. Each year at the festival Doc hands out 2,000 portions of it. For your next special occasion, order a whole homemade peanut butter pie from Doc’s. Both Doc Hollandaise locations have banquet rooms that can be rented for special events. The Stonebridge location also has a boardroom which seats 12. Their banquet rooms are equipped with internet and have a PowerPoint projector. Organizations looking to fundraise can host rib nights at Doc Hollandaise. Doc Hollandaise will also cater events outside of the restaurant. Instead of just dropping off the food at a private event, Chef Doc will set up his grill and stay for the whole event. The next time you’re craving real food that is affordable and comes in large portions check out Doc Hollandaise restaurant. The friendly staff can’t wait to greet you. FLS

ne of the best ways to draw a crowd is by offering a home cooked meal. At Mulberry’s, sisters Lynda Marshall and Cindy Johnston know this only too well. The two own and operate the downtown and Market Mall locations. Their journey in the restaurant business began as teenagers when their parents Lloyd and Mary Johnston opened the first of several Saskatchewan-based

Dog n’ Suds eateries in 1970 before eventually opening the doors to the Mulberry’s locations. The hard work ethic of their parents paved the way for Lynda and Cindy to assume ownership and achieve success. The downtown location is conveniently located at 124 3rd Avenue in Saskatoon—right in the heart of the city.
Paying attention to customers’ needs, Mulberry’s has catered their downtown location to make sure lunch breaks are relaxed, healthy and, of course, tasty and affordable. Besides the numerous selections on the menu, the downtown location offers a quick lunch option for those eating on the run. The quick lunch allows busy customers to make it back to the office on time while still enjoying a meal cooked to their liking.
Mulberry’s downtown also houses its own bakery. All the breads used for their sandwiches and other menu items are baked fresh daily, along with cinnamon buns, muffins, pies, and other choices their customers stop in for on a daily basis. Mulberry’s on 3rd Avenue also features a private dining room that can accommodate groups or parties of up to 30 people. Mulberry’s at Market Mall can also accommodate private dining functions in the Preston Room (up to 60 diners) and the Adelaide Room (up to 40 diners). Mulberry’s at Market Mall staff work hard to make their customers feel welcome in a friendly atmosphere that has become their second home. Lunch and supper buffets change daily and are available seven days a week. Many loyal customers frequent the turkey dinner buffet with all the trimmings every Saturday night. Can’t get away from the office to dine in? Mulberry’s offers catering service and will bring everything you need for groups from 10 to 200. A fleet of four catering vehicles will make sure your food arrives on time and to your specifications. Need to fundraise? Both Mulberry’s locations are available and well-known for grilling up delicious menu options. Lynda and Cindy attribute their success in the restaurant business to hands-on learning from their parents, customer loyalty and caring staff. Lynda and Cindy at Mulberry’s would be pleased to host you or your group soon. FLS

remier Saskatchewan’s Fine Wines, Spirits & Specialty Foods Festival took place at TCU Place September 27 to 29. The three-day event offered the opportunity to sample a vast assortment of delicious fine wines, spirits, and specialty foods. Autism Services, the charity of choice for Premier 2012, received a portion of the proceeds. Wine lovers had the option of participating in two different educational wine seminars: Food & Wine—A Sensory Discovery with Robin Schindel of Wine Bug Creations and Portuguese & Spanish Red Wines & You with Doug Reichel of Doug Reichel Wine Marketing Inc. A Winemaker’s Dinner also took place at The Ivy and a wine luncheon

at The Willows, which featured guest speaker “Dr. Booze,” James Romanow. Premier 2012 featured 35 wine and spirits companies with a grand combined total of 245 different wines and spirits to sample. JFJ Agency showcased its new brand of flavoured vodka: UV Cake. The flavours of UV Cake are vanilla, blue raspberry, coconut, and chocolate. UV Cake Vodka’s official slogan is “Celebrate with Cake!” It can be used as a substitute in baking in place of flavored liquors and extracts. Flavoured liquors are 15% volume alcohol while flavoured vodka is 30% volume alcohol. This is an advantage for people who enjoy specialty flavoured vodka martinis and cocktails as they can
combine the step of vodka and flavoured liquor into one. Vodka is also more mixable than liquors, which tend to be thick. Dessert vodka is becoming very popular as UV Cake sales rep Scott Johnston explained: “You can have your cake and drink it too!” UV Cake originates in Minnesota and is the leading flavoured vodka brand in the United States. For the 2013 winter holiday season, UV will debut its own whipped vodka. UV Cake has developed a unique drink recipe especially for Saskatchewan. It is called “Saskatchewan’s Green Spirit” and is a mix of UV Cake Blue Raspberry Vodka and orange juice. The result is a delectable fruity tasting green drink.

Highwood Distillers, located in High River, Alberta, featured its product White Owl Whiskey. White Owl is the world’s first clear rye whiskey with 40% alcohol volume. White Owl is aged for 10 years in charred oak barrels. It initially comes out brown and than is triple filtered like high-end vodka. There are no additional flavours or colours added. The taste is a more subtle whiskey. This makes it more mixable and can be used to make Caesars, screwdrivers and other drinks. “Creating a whiskey that can be used to mix popular drinks such as the caesar helps to bring in the younger demographic,”Highwood Distiller’s National Sales Manager Sheldon Hyra said. White Owl Whiskey also comes in a spiced flavour. It is a blend of the original clear rye whiskey with natural ingredients, subtle vanilla, and butterscotch flavours. The resulting flavour has traces of clove and oak with a smoother and longer finish than the original clear rye whiskey. Mont Tauch, a co-operative sustainable vineyard located in Tuchan, France, featured three wines: Farmer Dominique Grenache Blanc, a white wine to be paired with seafood or foie gras; Farmer Yvan Marselan, a red wine to be paired with grilled beef or goat cheese; and Farmer Robert Granache Noir, a red wine to be paired with roast beef or Roquefort cheese. The wines are named after real farmers who work in the Mont Tauch vineyard. Mont Tauch is part of Winegrowers for Sustainable Development, and makes daily commitments to environmental, social and economic issues. For example, one environmental initiative involved planting grass on the roofs of its new buildings to control the stock temperature without increasing energy consumption. Pelee Island Winery inhibits Canada’s southernmost tip of land in the Western basin of Lake Erie. It is Canada’s warmest region with a growing season over 50 days longer than mainland Canada. The shallow waters of Lake Erie provide extra warmth and protection, creating a unique microclimate. Pelee Island Winery featured five wines at Premier 2012. Its Pinot Noir is a medium red wine with a leather/tobacco aroma and a distinctive tannic finish. This wine thrives in the unique growing conditions at Pelee Island. Pinot Noir is best served at room temperature with grilled or roasted red meat and game, ham, roast pork or grilled Atlantic salmon. Pelee Island Winery also featured a Semi Sweet Merlot, a Shiraz Cabernet, a Gewurztraminer Reserve and Gewurztraminer. Gewurztraminer has a spicy aroma and exotic taste of mangos and peaches. It makes an ideal aperitif and may also be enjoyed as a complement to pates, cheese, and dessert. Apothic Red is a new red wine blend of three distinct grapes that is inspired by Old World traditions of wine making. E. & J. Gallo Winery featured its Apothic Red, a blend of spicy Zinfandel, smooth Merlot, and lush dark Syrah. Its name comes from Apotheca, a mysterious place where wine was blended and stored in 13th century Europe. Apothic Red has a plush, velvety taste with flavours of blackberry and dark cherry with hints of mocha, chocolate, and brown spice. It is the perfect accompaniment to hearty meat dishes, spicy tapas, confections, and desserts. Premier 2012’s vast range of wines and spirits appealed to everyone’s unique tastes. This annual event will continue to be enjoyed by Saskatoon residents for years to come. FLS

ucky Bastard Distillers Inc. is Saskatoon’s one and only micro distillery. The new company is proud to make high quality handcrafted gin, vodka, whiskies, liqueurs, bitters and eau de vie. The front of the distillery features a stylish retail and tasting room. Step through a door and you’re in the heart of the manufacturing room with the rich aromas of alcohol and wooden barrels flowing throughout. LB Distillers is so passionate about the craft of distilling that it offers free tours to educate customers.

LB Distillers is owned and operated by three friends: Cary Bowman, Michael Goldney and Lacey Crocker. The distillery can be rented out for private events such as bachelor party kick-offs or an intimate gathering of friends for a spirits tasting and appetizers. The retail section features bar and cocktail inspired items that are perfect for a housewarming or Christmas gift. LB Distillers alcohol is sold in house, at off sales and at many fine Saskatoon restaurants and bars. Lucky Bastard Vodka (40% ABV) is LB
Distillers’ own premium vodka. Vodka is a base for many cocktails and premium vodka is as smooth as possible without a harsh aftertaste or smell. Lucky Bastard Vodka is a pure spirit vodka free of any artificial smoothing agents like glycerin or sucrose. Gambit (40% ABV) is LB Distillers’ own New Western Dry style gin. It is a subtle gin made with juniper, coriander, angelica root, lemon peel, anise seed, cloves, chamomile and Saskatoon berries. LB Distillers has researched and for as far as it
knows, Gambit is the only gin in the world to include Saskatoon berries in the recipe. LB Distillers makes four different liqueurs (24% ABV): Carmine Jewel, Seabuckhorn, Crème de Cassis and Saskatoon Berry. Each one is free of preservatives and made from organic fruit found in Saskatchewan. Eau de Vie is a clear, colorless fruit brandy that is produced by means of maceration, aging and double distillation. LB Distillers makes their own eau de vie (45% ABV) from the pressing of the berries used in its liqueurs. The result is a spirit with a pleasing aroma and a very light fruit taste. An eau de vie is usually served as an aperitif or digestif to cleanse the pallet. Bitters are used to meld and enhance the flavour and character of a cocktail. They are a must in classic drinks such as the manhattan. LB Distillers makes its own: Lacey’s Bettah Bitters (45% ABV). It comes in a convenient and economical stainless steel atomizer to best deliver the rich aromatics. Since LB Distillers is a new distillery, its whiskies are still in the process of aging in the barrels (minimum of three years under Canadian law) and not for sale yet. It is well worth the wait. There are only four single malt whiskey distilleries in Canada, and LB Distillers is one of them. LB Distillers makes two types of whiskey (46% ABV each). The first is single malt “Scotch style” using malted barley, and the second is a straight rye using 67% malted rye and 33% malted barley. The speakeasy atmosphere of the retail and tasting room and the retro pinup girls on the bottle labels blend well with LB Distillers commitment to old world methods of making handcrafted and high quality spirits. LB Distillers is a breakthrough for the Saskatoon community and evidence of our growing cosmopolitan cocktail culture. With artists ranging in popularity, genre, age and accomplishments, the variety is a thrill for any music lover. Artists also have ample opportunity to check out the various workshops to educate themselves on the industry. A variety of Saskatchewan artists were present, and FineLifestyles writer, Nykea Behiel, had the chance to speak with several of them.

Consisting of four members, Eric, Byrun, Etienne and Sean, this band started out in Regina. With a mandate of delivering a memorable experience to the audience, this band is a creative fusion of blues, pop, dance and rock. “You can pirate a cd, dvd, anything, but you can’t pirate a live experience. It’s still sacred,” says Etienne. “The more fun we have, the more fun the audience has,” adds Eric. “This event is a great opportunity for us to take the reach we have regionally, and stretch it nationally,” says Eric. “It’s about knowing how to fill out a grant, all the paperwork, but it’s also about networking and shaking hands,” says Etienne. The two are grateful to have the networking opportunity afforded to their band. “SaskMusic has been integral to our progress,” adds Eric. The ambitious band plans on releasing an album in French in the near future. Two of their members are fluent in French, and they feel it is an important part of Canadian culture. “We didn’t feel it was genuine to release the same songs in French,” says Etienne. While many artists translate English versions to other languages, the crew don’t feel that is appropriate. The band is writing all new material for the French album. “It’s hard to say how our music embodies the prairies,” says Eric, though the band is sure it does. “Maybe it’s our do-it-yourself attitude,” offers Etienne. Whatever it is, these four gentlemen are proud to be from the Prairies, and carry that pride with them wherever they are travelling. “Having this as home base is cathartic,” adds Etienne.

performing at Breakout West. Although many classify him as country, he considers it a loose categorization. His music has elements of many different genres, and he feels the lyrics are the most important aspect. “I tried to hone in on the art of writing a great lyric, line by line. Every line, every syllable is important.” That discipline led to folk roots and country music. Since his dad and brother are cowboys, it wasn’t hard for Blake to take on that role himself. “It’s great to be in a musical genre where I can take on a ‘country-esque’ role. The community has really got behind me,” he says appreciatively. “To have the opportunity to play in front of new crowds, and build a personal relationship with people is amazing,” says Blake. While he considers the many conferences and workshops an important place to acquire new knowledge, having been in the industry for many years, Blake knows what he owes his success to. “The three keys to success are to work hard, be good to your fans and stay true to your art,” says Blake. He emanates warmth and kindness, making it obvious that he lives by his own words.

When it comes to hard work, Blake knows all about it. When he put out his first album, he went to see his neighbours. After selling a few albums that way, Blake continued to go door to door, city to city, selling more than 15,000 albums. This work ethic and dedication have gone into one of his newest projects, starting his own independent label, Oceanman Records. “It’s never been a goal to win an award. It’s been a goal to be 75 and a known songwriter.”
Slow Down Molasses
An eclectic mix of drone folk and dream pop, this Saskatoon band has left a Saskatchewan-sized imprint all over Canada, the United States and Europe. With its roots loosely placed in 2007, the band is constantly evolving and growing into their sound. “Breakout West is interesting, there are a lot of familiar faces. It’s great to have that sense of family on your home turf,” says Chris Morin. He and the rest of the band got home from Germany the night before Breakout West officially opened. “Its great to be here. Lower stress—we’re not learning how to drive in Europe or use amps from the Netherlands,” jokes Chris. “The prairies have always anchored our song writing, though it’s hard to define what a prairie sound is.”
ramblin Ambassadors
“There is a constant stream of new music flowing through us all the time. Everyone in the band has an insatiable appetite for music,” Chris says, speaking to the band’s influences. “I see SaskMusic as being the strongest it’s ever been. We’re always really thankful that they exist,” effuses Chris.

Although most of the band is originally from Estevan, they all call Regina home now. “Breakout West is a good meeting of the minds,” says Carl. This is a place where independent labels and artists come to swap contacts and ideas. The successful band is thrilled to have the conference and festival in Regina. “It’s home turf for us. We’re kind of the hosts, we show everyone around,” says Amanda. “We get to show them our home, and show off Regina,” adds Carl. “It’s great to see people in a different setting, there is time to actually connect with people,” says Brennan. “SaskMusic does a great job of bringing in people from all over,” says Carl. The Saskatchewan pride is clear. “We’re kind of isolated here,” says Carl. “The winter can get pretty depressing, but that informs our worldview.” The band’s most recent album, Summer of Lust, was written in the middle of winter. “When you go somewhere, you are the band from the prairies.”

“We wouldn’t have stuck around if we weren’t proud,” jokes Amanda. “No matter what we do, we always sound like a Canadian band,” adds Carl.
Jay Semko “I had a blast at Breakout West, I think it was great,” effuses Canadian music legend Jay Semko. Known globally for his work as a singer, songwriter, bassist, composer, and voice over artist, Saskatchewanians are proud to call Jay Semko our own. While he has accomplished a great deal, including going multi-platinum with the Northern Pikes, Jay stays humble and genuine. “I love attending them, hearing the stories behind songs, hearing the original versions that are really stripped down and acoustic,” says Jay of the Songwriters Circles held at Breakout West. “I just really enjoyed it. The whole vibe is really good.” Generous and optimistic, Jay cannot say enough good things about those he has worked with in the songwriters circles. He is excited about new Canadian talent.
Brandon isaak
When he first started writing songs, Jay took in all that he could. “I really went out of my way to find new and interesting music. Finding a little more of that ‘off the beaten track’ type music led me to try writing more unique and interesting songs.” Having become a true Canadian music legend, Jay found his niche in song writing. “When I started writing about things that I knew, then my writing got a lot better. I put more of myself into it, my own experiences and my own personality.” Jay is currently working on an online television/radio show that will be debuting within the next few weeks. Yet another honour was bestowed on the Northern Pikes during Breakout West 2012: they were inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Sunday night industry awards gala. hen Bilbo Baggins reached for some ale, did you know he was reaching for a cask ale? In earlier times, ales were served directly from casks sitting on a shelf by hammering a tap into the cask and pouring off great beer. Cask ale is simply the purest form of beer you can get your hands on.
beer is charged with a dose of sugar in order to go through another small fermentation inside the cask. Fresh hops are often added to the cask as well, which can result in floral or citrusy aroma to the beer.
This is beer from before the Industrial Revolution, before we had to ship it far distances. Cask ale has no fancy filtrations, pasteurizations, or chemical stabilizers. This is local beer at its best.
Once the cask is carbonated, it can be moved to a shelf where the tap is hammered home. The most traditional casks have the beer poured by gravity from this tap, although in the 19th century many pubs moved casks to the cooler basement and used a beer engine to draw the beer up.
To prepare a cask of beer, freshly finished beer is pulled from a fermenter and placed in a 40 litre firkin. This unfiltered

Taste Test Review: “A hearty loaf full of amazing flavours! No yeast, just the beer, makes this a unique bread. It goes great with soups, and has enough flavour that you can just eat it without anything else . . . maybe a bit of butter.”
Pastry Chef Ryan Young, Tusq Restaurant
PaddockWood Czech Mate Beer Bread This is a simple, fun and great way to bring a new taste to an old world standard.
3 cups white flour (not self rising) 3 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 1/4 cup sugar 12 oz PaddockWood Czech Mate Beer 1/2 cup melted butter zest of half an orange (optional)
Preheat your oven to 375F. Sift all of the dry ingredients together into a large mixing bowl. If you are using a mixing machine, such as Kitchenaid, use the dough hook. If you happen to be using good old fashioned brute force, a spatula or wooden spoon will work just fine. Slowly add in your PaddockWood Czech Mate beer and the orange zest (if you happen to be using it). Don’t mix to fast as it will cause the air to be pushed out of the flour and your bread will be more like a brick. Once fully incorporated, scrape the dough into a greased pan. Pour your melted butter over top as this will give you a nice golden colour and crisp texture. If the crunchy finish isn’t what you are looking for, add the melted butter after the PaddockWood Czech Mate Beer has been added. Bake for around an hour, depending on your oven. Once it is a nice golden brown take it out of the pan and cool. This is a great bread to toast and to use with a dip.

askatoon neighbourhood Riversdale is the place to be. Over recent years the area has experienced renewed energy and a revived enthusiasm for trendy restaurants and retail stores. Entrepreneurs, both young and old, are dedicated to seeing the Riversdale area appreciated by local residents and on a national scale. With a diversity of residents, businesses and cultural offerings, this neighbourhood is once again making its mark in this city’s history. As one of the original towns that merged with villages Saskatoon and Nutana to form the City of Saskatoon in 1906, historic buildings, such as The Adilman Building and Roxy Theatre, provide a dramatic backdrop to the streets. More recent developments, such as the River Landing Project, have brought an influx of people. The Saskatoon Farmers’ Market found a permanent home in Riversdale in 2007, and serves as popular destination for Saskatoon residents. River Landing itself boasts the impressive Remai Arts Centre with Persephone Theatre. Lined with Victoria Park, Optimist Park, and the newest Isinger Park, the core neighbourhood of Riversdale has claimed is beautiful spot along the South Saskatchewan River. Throughout the year, festivals and events are held in these parks, drawing people from all over the city and province. The original settlement was based on business and entertainment, and this sentiment reappearing again. The affordable opportunities with real estate coupled with low property taxes has been seen by new business owners as a real perk to establishing themselves in the area. The Riversdale Business Improvement District works with residents and potential business members on plans to move into the area. With the enticing business incentives and the revived culture and lifestyle taking over the streets, Riversdale is being recognized as what it is—a hot spot of new ideas and ventures within a historic setting. to see customers enjoying his cuisine. “I want my customers to feel as though they have come home. I treat every customer as though they’re family, and that’s why my restaurant is friendly and inviting. I truly love cooking, and I think that comes through in the quality of my food. It’s exciting to watch a new customer take that first bite, and watch the look on their face. I want my customers to really enjoy their food,” explains Bill. Bill is famous for his quiche, and he has a wide variety of quiche selections on his menu. He also features soup and sandwiches that are unique and fresh. He makes his own Italian sausage from a 275 year old family recipe, and has a smoker behind the restaurant that he also uses to smoke pork and chicken. “I
am committed to using local produce as much as possible. Everything on the menu is made from scratch using the freshest, highest quality ingredients,” says Bill. “I think what sets my restaurant apart is the food and personality. The décor of my restaurant is very vibrant in the 1920s style—from the colours to the table linens. I am passionate about cooking, and to me every dish is a work of art. Some people use paint to create art; I use food. The plates are always returned empty, and customers always leave with smiles on their faces.” Creations at the restaurant include Italian porchetta sandwiches, featuring pork shoulder rolled in spices and slow cooked over an open fire for 12 to 14 hours. onathan and Marcus Storey aren’t the type to spend their Saturdays indoors. Avid sports and outdoors fans, they are a lot more likely to be found standup paddleboarding on the South Saskatchewan River or longboarding down Saskatoon’s side streets than lazing on the couch. Eight years ago, the brothers took their passion for the outdoors and created a small shop to sell the gear they loved to their like-minded friends. Now, Escape Sports has gone from a hobby to a brand new 4000 square foot location at 110 19th Street West, just around the corner from their previous location. Escape isn’t your typical sporting goods store—you’re more likely to find five-toed running shoes by Vibram or the biggest selection of SANUKS in Canada, than a pair of Nikes. Specializing in alternative sports and recreation, Escape carries the adventure gear you can’t find anywhere else in Saskatchewan. The store originally started by carrying slacklines, unicycles, and other smaller items, but over the years it has expanded to include kites and kite boarding gear, disc golf equipment, mountainboards, snowshoes, X-country skis and much more. They also carry a variety of hemp, bamboo and merino wool clothing lines
which you aren’t likely to find elsewhere in Saskatoon. Because the store is owner operated, Escape Sports can to respond to the requests of the community. For example, when Saskatoon’s budding Roller Derby league approached them in 2010 to see about getting in roller skates, the brothers responded with great enthusiasm. Escape now supplies derby women and girls from across the province with the skates, pads and helmets they need for their events, and they’ve also become sponsors of Saskatoon’s league. Being owner operated has other advantages for Escape Sports. When you walk into the store, you can tell it is full of people passionate about their products. Jonathan and Marcus only carry products they personally endorse and enjoy. They ride the boards, fly the kites and throw the discs. The two have become heavily involved with several of the companies they work with, including LOKI Outerwear. The built-in mitts and facemasks that LOKI integrates to their jackets really caught their attention, and Escape is now the number one retailer for LOKI worldwide. The new store’s look radiates the attitude of its owners. Using reclaimed barnwood and salvaged pallets, the store has a
look that captures the relaxed yet edgy attitudes of their clientele. The store has become a go-to for Saskatoon’s alternative sports fans, and Jonathan and Marcus have created strong relationships with their customers. They listen to their suggestions for new merchandise and products, creating a unique community in Saskatoon. While serving niche markets, Escape Sports truly has something for everyone. Young or old, there’s a new adventure waiting for you at Escape. If you’re unsure of whether or not a sport is for you, they are glad to spend time familiarizing you with equipment and they offer lessons and rentals on certain products, including standup paddleboards. Stop by Escape Sports to see how they can help you discover a new way to enjoy the outdoors. FLS

outhern art, a central fireplace, exposed brick walls, subtle earth tones and wood create a warm atmosphere at Saskatoon’s new Southern fare restaurant, Mardi Gras Grill. The cozy surroundings are tastefully minimal, and give you a chance to immerse yourself in Southern food and culture. Having only been open a few months, owner Robert Tingey is thrilled at the positive reception he’s received so far. “It’s grown faster than I imagined,” effuses Robert. Originally from Manitoba, Robert has travelled all across Western Canada as a chef. He met his wife in Alberta and four years ago the two returned to Saskatoon. “I love Saskatoon. It’s been awesome,” says Robert. The two have been saving up for years in hopes of opening their own restaurant, and finally did a few months ago. Although he had dreams of opening his own restaurant, Robert didn’t know what type of cuisine he would offer. Having free range on menu creation in his last position in catering, Robert made a jambalaya for Window’s buffet. It was an absolute hit. It was about that time that a light bulb went off for Robert. “I could see where the market was pretty saturated, but there was nowhere in the city offering Southern food. I wanted to do something special.”

Robert and Suzanne bought a location in Riversdale, Saskatoon’s trendiest new neighborhood, in February. “We really wanted to be a part of the revitalization,” says Robert. With little capital to start the business, Robert began attracting people to the space with his tantalizing and genuine recipes.
“People who have lived in New Orleans have told me it’s rare to find somewhere with such deep, authentic flavours. That’s the best compliment I’ve received,” says Robert genuinely. Almost everything is made in house, including the novel sauces. With a diverse menu capturing many original recipes, Mardi Gras Grill offers comfort food for the most southern palette. Robert has had many rave reviews on the gator bites, crawfish cakes, gumbo, jambalaya, catfish, fried green tomatoes, barbeque pork stuffed potatoes, and of course, po’ boy sandwiches. The Big Easy Po’Boy, a fusion of unique flavours and ingredients, is a succulent combination of fried green tomatoes, juicy shrimp, and a creamy home made remoulade. While the cold winter weather settles in, there is no better way to stay warm than with a fresh order of crispy gator bites alongside Robert’s famous spicy gumbo, full of bold, rustic flavours. The ambitious couple is also having a flambé station installed for desserts like the banana foster and beignets. The station will be chef attended, and give patrons a chance to interact with workers. Robert is also working on a Southern drink menu that will include hurricanes, voodoos, and a spicy bloody mary, so you can immerse yourself in the culture. The literal translation of Mardi Gras is “Fat Tuesday.” Robert and his staff are working on developing some customary specials for Tuesdays, including a traditional seafood boil. Having seen many cliché fighting places that encouraged macho-ism and were not a comfortable place for all, David focused on making his space a healthy and inviting environment. Being a former professional fighter himself, David has also coached many of Saskatchewan’s top MMA fighters. Recently, one of his students, Mitch Clarke, has gone on to fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and has credited David as a major influence on his career.
“Dave has been a huge part of my success and I have trained with him for over six years. I train with some of the best coaches in Canada and the United States, with the likes of UFC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson, and in my opinion, Dave is one of the best coaches out there. He is very under-rated and easily one of the top five coaches in Western Canada,” says Mitch. Way of the Dragon offers three main ways to train—submission grappling, kick boxing, and a fitness conditioning program. David also offers women’s only self-defense classes, and classes tailored for groups. Kelsie Lenton is a busy young professional who works in the financial district. She loves David’s unique approach to his classes. “Dave really makes us work! But it’s so fun though, you kind of look past the hurt,” effuses Kelsie.
offers a unique approach to this ancient art. The program consists of a range of techniques including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Greco-roman Wrestling, Judo, and Catch Wrestling. Techniques learned at Way of the Dragon are effective in all combat situations—formal competitions through to self-defense scenarios. The kick boxing program, also separated for beginners and advanced groups, is taught by world-class trainers. World and European champion Professor Velimir Sabljic, King of the Cage Middleweight Champion Elmer Waterhen, and Canadian Muay Thai Champion Professor Wade Irwin, instruct the kickboxing classes. Learning from their expertise and dedication, anyone can enjoy this intense program.
Kids are welcome to come to the beginner classes, which are a great way to instill discipline, work ethic, and bully-proofing capabilities. With childhood obesity and bullying being major concerns for parents, David believes that all children should become involved in the Martial Arts, especially ones as practical and discipline oriented what he offers.
The boot camp style fight conditioning classes elevate your fitness level for fighting or just for health reasons. An alternative from the boring every day fitness routine like the gym or yoga, Way of the Dragon’s fitness conditioning program is designed to get you into the best shape of your life. It is no secret that fighters exemplify peak physical condition. These exercises are designed to improve cardiovascular performance and core strength.
Separating beginner and advanced grappling classes, Way of the Dragon
Due to the popularity of his kick boxing and conditioning classes, David has
recently added lunch hour classes, which run Monday to Thursday. They are a fun and challenging workout that anyone can fit into their busy work schedules. Whether your focus is to fight or get in better shape, Way of the Dragon Martial Arts & Fitness ensures the best teachers and techniques in the industry. In January, Way of the Dragon will be hosting its second fighting event, Honor Fight! Second Battle, at PrairieLand Park. The event will include kick boxing, boxing, and MMA fights. A FIRST LOOK AT REGINA’S
NEW STADIUM BY DEVIn PaCHoLIk
M
osaic Stadium was built in 1910 as a rugby field. In 2017, the historic stadium will begin its journey as a distant memory as a new stadium is revealed. The path to reaching a deal on the new attraction may not have been smooth as Saskatchewan people would have wanted. In 2011, it was announced that city council in Regina had the basics of a
84

one-billion dollar redevelopment project of the inner city which would include a new stadium for the Roughriders. It was presented as a three phase project that would take up to 15 years to complete. The Regina Revitalization Initiative will not only help Regina get a new stadium, but as the April 19, 2012 proposal states, “Relocating the stadium creates an opportunity to build an innovative new neighbourhood on the former site of
Mosaic Stadium. It will include a variety of residential, retail and commercial developments, all within the existing footprint of the city. It will be a model of sustainable development, rejuvenate a neighbourhood, provide affordable housing options, and provide work and economic opportunities for local people.” That has not stopped the Roughrider organization from putting over
$14-million dollars of renovations into Mosaic Stadium. In 2013 it will be hosting the Grey Cup and work was done this past offseason to demolish the seating area in both the north and south end zone areas. Mosaic Stadium has replaced those seats with close to 7,000 theatre-style seats and corporate boxes. They will also be erecting temporary bleachers so that on the day of the Grey Cup the seating capacity will be around
50,000 instead of the current 30,000. On July 14, 2012 the new plan was revealed to a sold-out Mosaic Stadium crowd before the Roughriders were to play the BC Lions. It was announced by Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall that the new $278-million spectator-roof stadium would be built in Regina in time for the 2017 season. The stadium will be designed so a roof can be added at a later date.
The funding for the facility will come from the province ($80 million), the city ($73 million), and the Roughriders themselves ($25 million). Also part of the funding will come from a $100-million loan which will be repaid from an extra fee from the current $8 to a proposed $12 added onto ticket prices for events at the new stadium. At the announcement on July 14, the

Premier stated confidently, “The current stadium has served us well, but it’s time the best fans in Canada and the best team in Canada have the best new stadium in Canada.” The reaction was a thunderous cheer from the crown of 30,000 plus. The location for the new 33,000 seat Roughrider stadium will be built on a cityowned area at Evraz Place. Although, the stadium would be owned by the city it will be operated by Evraz Place. Overall reaction around the province, however, has been mixed. As the city and government continue to take a positive stance on their newly signed deal, the people of Saskatchewan are a variety of excited, disappointed, and undecided. While many diehard Roughrider fans feel that this new stadium should have happened a long time ago there are many people from Regina who disagree fully. “It’s going to cost a lot of money and I just feel that we have too many problems we need to take care of first,” says Karlee Wilson. “I just think maybe our political system has its priorities backwards.” “This is news that should have come years ago,” one resident stated, who is a longtime fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. “Mosaic Stadium is getting so old and with new stadiums popping up all around the CFL the last few years we need to be a part of that to keep up.” When asked if the increase to the
proposed $12 ticket fee will be a hamper people from going to more games he stated with authority, “Not at all. We will gladly pay that fee for a better facility.” On September 19, 2012 the city of Regina unveiled a concept of the new stadium. Brent Sjoberg, the deputy city manager and CFO, describes the semi-open model which he believes is fitting for the city, “We wanted the big skies but protection from the elements, hence the spectator roof that covers the fans but is still transparent. It’s a smart roof that protects from sun and wind, but you don’t miss those skies. This is the furthest thing from Mosaic Stadium.” Technical advisers on the stadium project are a combination of firms, including Pattern
Design out of England. Summarizing the process of selecting the current design, Sjoberg says, “We’ve considered solar and wind patterns, structural requirements, and studied what we wanted and funneled down to the priorities. We also studied various features of other stadiums around the world as benchmarks. We did this work with a group of various partners, including the Roughriders, Evraz, and the province. It was a fluid process.” The big question is still cost. Sjoberg states his groups’ goals for staying on budget, “We will be refining the costing work. Consultants will be working on what inflation is like in Regina over the longterm, since the cost of material goes up over the years. We will end up with a cost
estimate, and then we plan to bring in a third party and conduct a peer review to go over the cost assurance. We’re then using the procurement model of ‘design, build, and finance.’” Design, build, and finance is a project pricing model, Sjoberg explains, “It hasn’t been done in Regina before, but it’s a proven method that makes projects on time and on budget. We go out to the market with a guaranteed maximum price and time.” Once a building company makes a bid on the job, the delivery costs and timeline becomes that company’s responsibility. “This allows us to demonstrate the cost won’t go up. Finally, the price risk goes to whoever bids – the risk is transferred to them.” FLS

he fourth annual Wright Construction Off the Leash Luncheon at Prairieland Park proved to be another major success. A group of devoted supporters and alumni come together to raise money for the University of Saskatchewan Men’s Hockey team. “Every year tuition goes up, and the need to secure adequate amount of resources go up,” explains Taylor Wildeman, Chairman of the luncheon’s organizing committee. Wildeman’s been on the committee since the luncheon’s inauguration in 2009. Since the luncheon began four years ago, they have been able to help provide 100 percent of the scholarships available to the men’s hockey team, a task that was never accomplished before this fundraiser. The main attraction of the luncheon is the NHL star presence. The initial luncheon year featured Wendel Clark, while the following year Brett Hull and Kelly Chase entertained the crowd, and last year Jeremy Roenick was the guest of honour. This year, second all-time scoring defenseman Paul Coffey enthralled a crowd of over 1200 people. Through his 21 NHL seasons, Coffey won four Stanley Cups and three Norris trophies. In 2004, Coffey was voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and in 2005 the Oilers retired his jersey. “I love Western Canada. It has what the East lacks, for good or bad. The calmness, everyone is nice. It’s great,” says Ontario native Paul Coffey. “Seeing the pride, the people, and the hometown feel. It’s a real nice place.”

According to Coffey, former team-mate Mark Messier was known to be quite a partier. “If he had $1000 in his pocket, it was everybody’s. But he’d also come into the bar with no money in his pocket, run up a two-thousand dollar bill, and leave,” laughs Coffey. “Mark was beautiful, and he was a great, great team-mate.” While regaling the crowd with stories from his time in the NHL, Coffey humours attendees as well. While he was shooting in practice one day, aiming for certain corners of the net, Wayne Gretzky’s father chided him and gave him some advice. “Aim for the goalie and you might miss him.” “I coach my boys in hockey and I love every minute of it,” says Coffey of his involvement now. “When the day is over, I can’t wait to get to the rink and be with the kids.” The luncheon also has a strong commitment to youth in the community. Both last year and this year, the former NHL players took part in a community event, proudly sponsored by MNP, prior to the luncheon. This year, the organizing committee had Paul Coffey talk to kids and families at Harold Latrace arena. “It’s an opportunity for them to see an NHL legend live, get autographs, and ask questions,” says Wildeman.

Throughout his speech and the questions asked after by comedian and master of ceremonies, Kelly Taylor, Coffey provided an inside look at the NHL, as well as inspiration for this year’s U of S men’s team.
an occasion he remembers very fondly. Coffey says, “Even when you’re close, you just don’t think you can ever get there.”
The team made the national finals last year and retained much of their roster, and Saskatoon is the host city for both the 2013 CIS final in March and the 2014 tournament. Coffey encouraged them as he reminisced about his own past glories: “Championships last forever.”
He also has many warm memories of the first cup he won in Pittsburgh, but of course, all are special. “That’s what you dream about as a kid,” says Coffey. Of course, the parties that follow are something to remember as well. “It takes a while to sink in, but you pretty much just go on a two-week bender,” Coffey says laughing.
In his illustrious career, Coffey has played on numerous championship teams. His first Stanley Cup was with the Oilers,
Coffey shared a few other stories from his youth, and one about Mark Messier got the crowd laughing.

Businesses and sponsors also have an opportunity to buy a table at the luncheon for inner-city kids. This year there were eight tables of kids at the event. “We have a great opportunity to inspire these kids as well,” effuses Wildeman. Events of this size take months of planning and dedication, and next year’s luncheon is already in the works. If you or your company is considering buying a seat or a table, it is best to get in early, as seats are assigned on a first-come basis. Alongside funding scholarship opportunities for the men’s hockey team, the luncheon donates 20 percent of proceeds from silent auction to the Canadian Cancer Society. The successful Off the Leash Luncheon is a venue for Saskatoon’s finest to reflect on the past and present of this nation’s game while supporting local amateur athletes. Cayambe Peak provides a dramatic backdrop for hikers in Ecuador.
Fall Is a Great tIme to HIke tHe andes oF ecuador By STUART WASSERMAN Photos RogER J. oRgAN

n a clear day the flight into or out of Quito, Ecuador, is stunning with snow-capped volcanoes surrounding the capital. Ecuador has a string of 14 volcanoes that rise 15,000 feet or more, and among these mountains are hidden verdant valleys that offer a rich natural experience intertwined with history and culture. I recently joined a Country Walkers hiking tour that started in the highlands just north of Quito. We were a group of avid American and Canadian hikers thrown together in an escorted hiking tour in the Andes of Ecuador. We walked six to 11 miles a day and then relaxed and recuperated in historic haciendas at night.
cows. She was dressed in wool clothing in a style that dates from centuries ago. The first night we stayed in the Hacienda Zuleta, owned by a political family that produced two former presidents of Ecuador - first in 1902 and then in 1948. The oldest part of the hacienda is filled with antique furniture and a big fireplace, and all the rooms are modern and comfortable. The hacienda is a working farm with its own dairy and egg production, so all of our food was fresh. Mornings started out with sumptuous breakfasts and exotic fruits and juices.
that was described as easy to moderate. But instead of hiking to the Condor area we rode horses past pre-Inca Indian mounds of the Caranqui people, who were an agrarian-based culture and the original inhabitants of the Zuleta Valley from 800 until the arrival of the Incas in the late 1400s. We saw two caged recuperating condors — the birds with the largest wingspan in the world — but we didn’t see any flying free. That evening, in the last rays of sunlight, we could see off in the distance the volcano peak we had hiked that day.
Our first lunch was set outdoors near Cayambe, a volcano that is 18,996 feet tall.
After breakfast we laced up our boots and set out to hike to Cubilche Volcano. The distance was about six miles, and the terrain was moderate to challenging with a (2,425-foot elevation gain and loss.
Farther north we stayed in Cusin Hacienda, owned by a British teacher who married into the Philip Morris family. Each hacienda has a garden area, and at Cusin these gardens are large.

Pinsaqui, located near a craft town called Otavalo. The hacienda was built alongside the old Pan American Highway — the one traversed by Simon Bolivar, who led the freedom fight from Spanish rule in the early 1800s. These hikes were challenging, and people moved at their own pace. One guide always walked in the rear, and each guide had binoculars to help identify birds and a book to help with botany. They knew the names of all the beautiful flowers we passed along the way. “It was invigorating,” said Bill Parker, a retired college professor from Mississippi, “with all the sights of colors, landscapes, people, livestock, clean air, beautiful sky and rugged mountains. And it was joyful interacting with happy people despite a simple and difficult life.” In addition to the great physical exercise, we had some cultural interactions with the native people. Country Walkers provides interaction with local people for its clients, so we stopped briefly in a highland school classroom filled with maybe a dozen 6-year-olds. The children, including one boy with a greased-up Elvis hairstyle, greeted us with bright smiles. The maestro had the children sing two songs for us, and then he surprised us by asking if we would perform a song in exchange. Among our motley crew of semi-retired engineers and pharmaceutical salesman was a young forester from Eureka, Calif., who stepped forward for a solo. Kameron Crocker barreled out “America the Beautiful” Ray Charles style. When he finished, the second-grade class of the Luis Wandemberg School north of Quito burst into applause. Their inquisitive eyes took in almost every detail of the middle-aged Americans standing in front of them festooned in hiking gear. We all had the option of only hiking in the morning and after lunch jumping into a van with the luggage and heading to the next hacienda — an option I admit to choosing more than once. Luckily I did not miss the surprise interaction we had on another morning when we were walking halfway down the rural mountainside and ran into native Indians dressed in heavy woolen clothes celebrating a baptism in the church below. They distributed cups for a local alcoholic drink — something

called “steeped from cactus” — and they motioned for us to join in the dance. They had an accordion player, a guitarist and a fiddler among their group. We exchanged smiles, accepted the drink and some among us, such as Dianne Fotiades, danced. When the trip ended her husband, George Fotiades, said he most remembered “the proud and simple people, the earth being their living, who have pride in their customs, especially the colors of their dress. I remember their warmth and the special feeling of being welcomed into their baptism celebration with no fear or wariness of us, rather an embrace to share their simple fun.”
The last day of the trip the group stayed in the Hotel Patio Andaluz, the first boutique hotel to open in Quito’s Old Town. The hotel is rich in colonial detail and comfort. Just two minutes away is Quito’s Plaza Independencia and nearby that the church of La Compania de Jesus, perhaps the finest church in all of Latin America. Joan and Roger Organ are active travelers in their 60s from Pagosa Springs, Colo. “This was a really great vacation with amazing, spectacular scenery and beautiful people,” Joan said. “The overriding memory is of feeling like Gulliver in Lilliput on many occasions and also of wanting to very much go back.” FLS

ince 1946 Mitchinson Flying Service has been providing Saskatoon area residents with exceptional flight instruction. From private pilots to aspiring commercial airline pilots, all students taught at the school receive thorough training from experienced instructors. Janet Keim has been with Mitchinson Flying Service since 1971, and has owned and operated the business since 1979. She received her training from the original owners, and loves the longevity of the business. “We have instructors with ages that span all generations, including some who are in their early 20s who learned from our more seasoned teachers.” With the love and knowledge of flying shared between teachers and students, strong connections are built and maintained at

Mitchinson’s. “We get former students and instructors stopping in frequently to catch up and visit,” explains Janet. Another example of how the community is strengthened over shared passion is seen with Mitchinson’s aircraft maintenance engineer. Ken Baxter has been with the company since the early 1980s, keeping the fleet of aircraft in prime condition. He assists many former students, who now have planes of their own, with learning the essentials of maintaining their aircraft. Mitchinson’s is one of the province’s flight schools participating in the commercial pilot diploma program, a partnership between the Saskatchewan Aviation Council and the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and
Technology (SIAST). “We are involved in aviation because we love it, and we want to pass that passion on to our students. We genuinely care about the kids that are in the aviation program, and many come to me for advice about their future careers.” Graduates of this program have gone on to be bush pilots, water bomber pilots, business pilots, pilots for scientific research teams in the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as commercial airline pilots. What does the experience of learning to fly have on a person? “It builds confidence. You learn discipline and grow a sense of accomplishment. Flying is huge. It’s amazing.” Janet has witnessed a lot of young people come into her school and transform their lives with their new skills. “I believe that every
kid should learn to fly because it gives them such an amazing sense of selfesteem,” smiles Janet. To make the reality of flying accessible to more people, Mitchinson Flying Service offers a Discovery Flight for those that may be interested in obtaining a pilot licence. Discovery Flights make an exciting and affordable gift for that special someone. At only $100, a Discovery Flight gives someone the opportunity to fly an airplane. Janet notes, “It’s perfect for kids who are exploring their future career paths. Aviation is a great field to be in. And parents can try their own Discovery Flight as well, and get to know the industry better.”

rett Wilson is a role model for Canadian business men and women, and is known largely for his former role on CBC’s awardwinning Dragons’ Den and his latest show from Slice, Risky Business. As a University of Saskatoon alumnus, Wilson has gone on to become a member of the Order of Canada and the chairman of both Canoe Financial and his Prairie Merchant Corporation. Wilson’s legacy is also marked by his incredible philanthropy, generating tens of millions of dollars for many charities and social programs. He has been presented scads of awards and honours for his incredible success in commerce as one of the leading investors in the country. Now, Wilson can add another title to his name: author. His first book, Redefining Success: Still Making Mistakes, is about how to re-evaluate our personal definitions of success, according to the publisher, Penguin Press.
Through trial and error, he has discovered that health, family, and friends are the foundations for real, enduring success, both in business and in life. The book is about his journey, which continues to teach him this crucial lesson. As the author says, “Though my book is titled ‘Redefining Success,’ the subtitle is just as important—’Still Making Mistakes.’” Below is an excerpt from Redefining Success, in which Wilson discusses the importance of integrity in the professional world. As the chances of greater financial gain and power increase, so too do the temptations and follies of immorality:
Developing a Moral Compass (excerpt from Redefining Success)
“A regular compass consistently guides geographical direction. A moral compass is a mental process that consistently points a person in a particular direction in life. A moral compass is an internal tool.
Some might refer to it as a conscience or a feeling that consistently guides personal beliefs and actions. From my experience, most people either have a strong ethical sense when they start out in business or they develop one along the way. Watching people suffer from the consequences of bad or unethical choices will eventually raise the question, is it really worth it? And the wise ones soon discover that unethical actions or values never are worth pursuing. For me, the lesson about sticking to a strong moral compass—with a focus on doing what’s right—came when I was starting out. As I mentioned, early in my career I worked closely with someone who was sadly lacking moral standards. In fact, if it is possible for anyone to be completely devoid of ethics, he came close. He treated his employees unfairly, without respect, honestly or encouragement, and he certainly didn’t deal squarely with his clients. Within a few weeks of joining his firm, I discovered that he had a willingness to share

confidential information around town when it might serve his own self-interest. I realized that being associated with him was not wise, and I got out as soon as I could extricate myself from that situation. Unfortunately for me, that took almost eighteen, miserable, frustrating months. That experience helped me get clarity about what kind of businessperson I wanted to be “when I grew up”—I wanted to be someone who is both fair and respectful, who negotiates a square deal with mutual interests in mind, who invests in people rather than projects, who follows through on promises and who delivers quality service every time. I wanted to be someone for whom a handshake creates a bond much stronger and more enduring or meaningful than a written contract. My time with my immoral colleague was influential in guiding me to my moral compass. Thanks to my upbringing, by parents who lived by strong ethical principles, I have always enjoyed a heightened sense of awareness of what is right or wrong. I didn’t always pay attention to my moral compass in the early days of my various careers, but I actually did find it over time and that moral compass has certainly strengthened with time. I’ve seen what happens to people who operate ethically in business and life and those who don’t. Same of my own mistakes confirmed what I already knew—that the consequences of flexible or misguided moral or ethical standards are just too dire for me. Having a strong principled foundation is not the only way to succeed. Sure, there are those who have achieved material wealth without principles. But, to me, an honest path is a worthy path and this is the best path to success. Success is simply more sustainable and rewarding when it’s achieved without jeopardizing one’s integrity. You will sleep better at night. You will gain financial success without losing the respect of your employees, your customer or your competitors. More importantly to most of us, you will secure the respect of your own children, the ultimate judges of your actions and legacy.” From this exerpt, we can see that Wilson’s book is not a get-richquick guide – far from it. He no doubt speaks to his triumphs and the path he took to get where he is today; however, Wilson teaches the importance of the difference between right and wrong. The choice is personal and sometimes immeasurable, but the decisions we make are inescapable. Fans of Dragon’s Den generally note Wilson presented himself as a man of compassion and moral rigour – a stark contrast between him and some of his former colleagues, namely Kevin O’ Leary. The two often butted heads on the issue of economics versus ethics – O’ Leary opting for dollars and Wilson for altruism. He continues to show us we can have both. What Redefining Success reveals is Wilson has grown professionally and personally; that he has been misguided before. As he says, “Although I was successful, I’d been though addiction treatment, counseling, and I realized I wasn’t very happy.” And yet, the person he is today, according to his book, has learned the errors he continually makes, though regrettable, are inextricably part of his character. The trick is to overcome. FLS

“Over the last 10 years, Saskatchewan’s small businesses have experienced exponential growth,” says Shannon Briske. He is a senior financial advisor with Assante Financial Management Ltd. “We are seeing that many of these businesses are finding themselves in very healthy cash positions, and we are also seeing that some business owners may not be aware of the many options available for investing within their corporations and holding companies.” Shannon and his brother, Byron Briske, expand on their vision for Saskatchewan, “Many mature businesses are in a debtfree position and are looking to pass the

torch to the next generation or in other cases to the current management group. This situation poses many challenges and also many opportunities. We are confident that through a coordinated effort between your professionals and ours the outcome will be a success.” This coordination is possible through their vast array of resources. Assante is a comprehensive firm and a fully owned subsidiary of CI Financial. It offers clients full-service investment planning through United Financial, a division of CI Private Counsel LP, with tax specialists, lawyers, accountants, risk specialists, and estate planning experts.
Shannon and Byron Briske, Financial Advisors
In particular, Shannon and Byron focus on planning for events such as succession and retirement. “We find that many owners think of their businesses almost like a child or a family member. We understand these emotional connections and will work with you at your pace to make sure retirement and succession go according to your wishes. We understand that these transitions are life-changing and require a sensitive approach.” Shannon adds, “Byron and I understand that some people need a softer approach. After all, topics like Buy Sell Agreements, in which business owners plan what happens to company assets after passing away, can be tough yet critical issues.”
Hence their approach is not product focused but solution driven. “The practice of selling a quick-fix is obsolete and commoditized in our industry. Our value is in providing a service rather than a product and building a strong relationship with our clients,” says Byron. “We try to make people as comfortable as possible,” the Briske brothers say. “Our job is to make things simple for our clients and allow them to focus on what they do best. We are open for business, and ready to help you solve the problems that keep you up at night.”

The Briskes warn against relying on cookie-cutter products when making these decisions. Instead, the brothers believe in consultative planning to ensure all parties understand each other and all aspects of the situation have been considered and are working together as efficiently as possible. “Our first meeting with a client is an examination and discovery process,” Byron says about consultations. “This is a disciplined process with pointed questions to get at the heart of the entire situation. That way the client understands us and we understand them and expectations are laid out from the start.”
“We are confident that through a coordinated effort ... the outcome will be a success.”

ome investors find the thought of investing in the stocks of individual companies somewhat intimidating. After all, how do you possibly decided which companies, out of literally White thousands, to choose? A good place to start is by taking a closer look at the products and services you use in your own daily routine. PMS 5535
Is this anything like your day? At 6:30 a.m. the alarm clock rings, interrupting your peaceful slumber. Reluctantly you roll Blackout of bed and head for the bathroom.
PMS 5535
Turning on the shower, you relax under the steam of hot water (heated by SaskEnergy). After drying yourself with a clean towel washed in Tide (Procter & PMS Black Gamble), you brush your teeth with Crest (Procter & Gamble). For breakfast you make yourself a slice of toast (bread from George Weston) and White pour aPMS glass of orange juice (Tropicana/ Pepsico). You then make a cup of coffee (Folgers/Procter & Gamble) to enjoy on your drive to work. At work, you turn on your computer (DELL) and print a draft of a presentation on which you have been working. After retrieving the document from the printer (Hewlett PMS 5535 Packard), you start creating a Power Point presentation (Microsoft) for the meeting scheduled for later in the week. Lunch time arrives and you enjoy a lunch made from the food you bought yesterday at the local grocery store (Loblaw). You then decide to take a walk and pay PMSsome Black bills checking to make sure your paycheque was deposited through your company’s automatic deposit program (ADP). On the way home from work, you realize you need to stop and fill up the car with gas (PetroCanada). Your cell phone (Vodafone) then rings. It is your spouse, who informs you that your son has scraped himself while playing and White asks you to drop into the local drug store (Shoppers Drug Mart) to pick up some Band-Aids (Johnson & Johnson).
On the way home from the drug store, you are stopped at a rail crossing due to an oncoming train (Canadian National Rail). While you become impatient because of the length of time you are delayed, you marvel at how long the train is and the amount of goods it must be carrying. During dinner, you discuss the renovation project you are planning for the basement and the materials you will need to buy this weekend (Home Depot). You also make a note to return a call to your insurance agent who left a message earlier in the day to remind you it is time to review your insurance policy (Manulife). Before bedtime, you enjoy a large glass of filtered Logo with Registration Marks water (Brita/Clorox). These are typical of the goods and services the average Canadian uses every day. Companies whose stocks can be purchased publicly provide many of these products. Of course, your loyalty to a particular product does not guarantee that company’s success, but it does provide a good starting point in your search for an attractive stock investment. By discussing the company with an investment professional, you can determine if the stock provides an attractive investment opportunity or if another company might better suit your investment needs. COZYING UP TO FIREPLACE SAFETY BY sHELL BUsEY
T
he warm and comforting glow of a fire is a welcome treat as winter evenings bring a crisp chill to the air. Whether you curl up in front of a wood-burning or a natural gas fireplace, it’s important to know how to enjoy your fireplace safely.
Wood-burning fireplace When a wood-burning fireplace is in use, air is continually drawn out of the home and up the chimney. This air must be replaced to maintain the air balance flowing in and out of the home; this is essential for the safe operation of all fuel burning appliances. This balancing act ensures adequate air for complete combustion and ventilation of the flue gases. If the air balance is altered because of poor air supply or a blocked chimney, carbon monoxide (CO) and soot can be produced and down drafting can occur. To prevent smoke and flue gases (CO) from entering your home, follow these precautions: • When a fireplace is in use, an open damper allows the smoke and gases to exit. • Ensure an adequate fresh air supply into your home before lighting the fire. • Some fireplaces come with their own combustion air duct. If yours is not equipped with this, you must have a fresh air supply nearby, such as an open window. • Keep the fresh air supply open, even overnight, until the fire is completely out. • After the fire is out and the ashes are cold,
108
FineLifestyles
saskatoon
or when the wood-burning fireplace is not in use, close the damper. This will prevent air and heat loss up the chimney, and cold air drafts from coming down the chimney. The first line of defense against CO is the proper installation, use, maintenance and inspection of all your fuel-burning appliances. The second line of defense is a properly installed CO detector. When you are about to purchase a new CO Detector, make sure it is approved to the latest standards. Look for CSA 6.19 or CSA 6.1901 on the package. Consider installing glass doors on your wood-burning fireplace. The doors will prevent heat in your home from escaping up the chimney, saving you money on your heating bill. You may also want to consider purchasing a draft stopper; they are designed to prevent drafts from conventional woodburning fireplaces when not in use.
Natural gas fireplace Natural gas fireplaces can operate at more than 60 per cent efficiency, whereas a typical wood-burning fireplace operates at 10 per cent efficiency. Efficiency refers to the amount of heat that is extracted from
the flame, and is used to heat the home. Remember to have regular inspections performed on natural gas fireplaces, along with all natural gas appliances.
Types of natural gas fireplaces Fireplace Insert: natural gas fireplace that fits inside an existing masonry fireplace. Natural Vent Fireplace: natural gas fireplace that has a type-B vent (a four inch manufacturer-recommended venting pipe used to exhaust the combustion gases of fireplaces, hot water heaters and other small natural gas appliances) going up a fireplace chase (the enclosure on the outside of the house that the metal chimney runs through). Direct Vent Fireplace: natural gas fireplace that uses a single outlet, dual pipe system to draw combustion air and vent exhaust. The vent is typically installed directly behind the fireplace or slightly above and behind. Free Standing Fireplace: wood stove appearance, with the benefits of natural gas; this can be either natural-vent or direct-vent.
Other Options Pellet Stoves and Inserts. They are environmentally friendly, extremely clean
burning and cost effective. Pellets are made from 100 per cent waste sawdust, dried and compressed, creating an ideal heating fuel. Electric Fireplaces. This is a great option if you live in an apartment, and you want the look and feel of a fireplace when installing a gas unit is simply not an option. While they are not meant to heat a large area, they do provide some added comfort to a room. FLS

Leane King, owner and Creator
Perfect for the Milestones in life By: Nykea Marie Behiel Photos DaNielle larsoN

ust over a year ago Leane King was trying to come up with a unique gift idea for her sister. Knowing she has a soft spot for her dog, Leane got creative and began taking pictures. She took pictures of every day objects, finding letters within them, and put them in a frame to spell the name of her sister’s dog. This process began a whirlwind of entrepreneurship and a busy year that has seen Leane’s business flourish.

Shortly after she got her sister’s gift together, Leane went to a few local trade shows. Quitting her job, she took the risk necessary to grow her business. Leane entered an entrepreneurial contest and was awarded the title of Saskatoon’s Finest Mom Entrepreneur. Winning the contest gave her a three-month specialty lease at a kiosk in Centre Mall and plenty of exposure to launch her business. “I couldn’t have asked for a better launch,” says Leane genuinely.
“I get enjoyment out of creating things for people,” effuses Leane. With her creative visionary skills, she transforms every day items into works of art. She takes pictures of architecture or nature items around the city and the province that look like letters. Leane then assembles the letters into words or names, and frames them beautifully. The simple elegance of the black and white letters is an exceptional gift for any milestone, whether it is a
wedding, anniversary, Christmas, family picture, team memorial, or anything you are celebrating. Recently Leane has added some new products to the mix. She now offers greeting cards, notepads, mini photo art pieces, and outdoor signs all featuring her Photo Art letters. The outdoor signs are mounted onto durable products that look classy in a garden or at the front porch. Her Mini Photo Art pieces consist of one Photo Art letter along with a descriptor, such as “T . . . is for teacher.” Leane also offers the option of featuring a colour photo or group of photos alongside her word art. This customisation is a great way to further personalise the gift. This journey has been one of hard work and family support. Leane has converted part of her house into a workspace and showroom. Since the hours are long, Leane has also enlisted the help of her mother. “It’s been a great gift and opportunity to work together,” she says. The sentiments spelled out in her art are echoed in her own life. A business that began at the kitchen table, Spell It Photo Art is now a thriving prairie company. What is a credit bureau and credit score?
Credit Reports Demystified
A credit report is a snap shot of your credit history. And a credit score is a judgement about your financial health at a specific point in time. It indicates the risk you represent for lenders, compared to others. Credit scores can go as high as 900. Anyone who has credit score over 680 is usually in great shape as far as lenders are concerned. Anyone with a score below 600 usually will have trouble getting a mortgage. There are exceptions and there are lenders that will look at these applications. Prior to the mortgage melt down, we had more lenders that would look at deals where the applicant had credit scores below 600.
How can you see your credit bureau? Who can see your credit bureau?

There are two major credit-reporting agencies, Equifax and Transunion. You can request them to send you a copy through the mail (free) or you can go online (and pay a fee) to get instant access to your report. You have the right to see your credit report. No one else does without your permission.
What factors influence your credit score? (1) Your payment history. Have you ever missed a payment? (2) Your outstanding debts. Do you carry a balance that is close to your limit on your credit card from month to month? (3) Collections, judgements, bankruptcies.
Is there any collection or bankruptcy against you? (4) Your account history. How long have you had credit? (5) The number of inquiries made on your credit bureau. How many times have you had your credit bureau checked in the last 6 months? (6) The type of credit you are using. Do you only have credit cards or do you have a mix of credit cards and loans? In summary, always pay your bills on time. Try to pay your bills in full by the due date. If you are unable to do this, pay at least the required minimum amount. Don’t go over the credit card limit. The higher you balance, the more impact it has on your credit score. Reduce the number of credit applications you make. If too many potential lenders ask about your credit in a short period of time, this may effect your score. Please note that your score does not change when you ask for information about your own credit report. It sounds like a lot of rules to get to a great score but in actual fact if you have two tradelines (for example, a credit card and a auto loan) and you make your payments on time, you most likely have a great credit score. Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions about credit bureaus or if you would like to discuss mortgages. 20 YEARS OF BLOSSOMS By AvivA ZAck photos By heAther fritZ
In the early 1990s, while working parttime at Millars Florists and studying at the University of Saskatchewan, Carla Scharback could not have dreamt that she would one day own one of the most prominent floral and home furnishing shops in Saskatoon. When an opportunity to open Blossoms presented itself soon after convocation, Carla decided to take a leap of faith, and in 20 years hasn’t looked back.

“The original inspiration for Blossoms was written on a sign on our front door. It read ‘Miracles, Misfortunes, Celebrations, Random Acts of Kindness & Spontaneity’,” says Carla. “What I love most about the store is that it is a gathering place. A place where people come to celebrate their sacred events and emotional moments.” The staff connects with their loyal clientele, many of whom have become
friends over the years. “We celebrate the milestones in their lives along with them. People connect flowers with emotion, and as florists we get to be a part of those emotional moments.” Being in the business for two decades, they have seen many floral trends come and go. From dried flowers to minimalist modern designs to natural organic elements like moss and ferns and seasonal local flowers, which is currently what is most popular.
Blossoms prides itself on being current, and while they do follow the up-and-coming floral trends, Carla and her staff like to infuse their own fresh ideas. “We bring our passions to every flower arrangement we make and every event we are a part of.” Blossoms’ designs can often be spotted around Saskatoon at weddings, gala events and prominently displayed at many local businesses.
Carla Scharback, owner
Just last year, Blossoms reinvented itself as Blossoms Living, doubling its size and adding high-end furniture and more gorgeous gifts and home accessories. “The time was right to expand from the design of beautiful flowers to beautiful designs throughout the home,” says Carla. Blossoms Living is proud to be an 18Karat neighborhood store. Coincidentally, the Vancouver company has been around the same number of years as Blossoms Living, evolving similarly over the years, so it seemed a natural fit. Exquisite lines also found at Blossoms Living include Dwell Studio from New York City, and Designers Guild from London. In their recently expanded 3000 square foot space, Blossoms Living is full of a wide variety of things that can make a living space beautiful. Amongst their floral displays, couches and coffee tables, are vessels in all shapes and sizes. Decorative bowls, terrariums and candles adorn nearby shelves. Colourful pillows and throws line another. Walking into Blossoms Living, customers are surrounded by wonderful scents and countless pretty items for the home. While Carla hadn’t envisioned her small floral shop would 20 years later be what it is today, she can’t help but smile as she fondly reflects on how many lives Blossoms Living has touched and made that much more beautiful. lton John got one at TCU following his performance. Bono got one for his birthday at his home on a street with no name, just outside Dublin. A grieving family in Dundonald on the loss of their loved one. That special sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. The Cosgroves on the birth of their new baby. An entire staff and a whole bunch of customers at Christmas time. Mom on her special day. Someone from someone just to say “thanks” on another day. So many others for so many other reasons, all got one. Everyday, as it has been over the last 25 years, just around the corner or sometimes around the world, a Creative ComplimentsTM unique design is delivered to someone special from someone special on a special occasion. Let’s face it: we’re all different. We don’t all look alike, feel alike, care alike, or dress alike. We don’t all drive the identical car. We don’t like all the same foods—well ok, we all like cupcakes, but even there

we like variety. In fact, we are each so rare that it is a big deal when we have a twin and even then, they’re not always identical. It used to be when confronted with the same circumstances, occasions and events—which we all share so often—there were few meaningful ways to express ourselves, our thoughts and feelings. The solution was a gift that could be as unique as the person giving and the person receiving, all while appropriate to the moment. So when Ellie started Creative ComplimentsTM 25 years ago, she chose gift baskets in the beginning, followed by flowers later on, and her creativity has fueled her passion everyday since. Ellie says “creative” is our first name because it is the first thing we do and, accordingly, every gift basket and floral arrangement that leaves the premises can be a one of a kind, totally unique, a true one off, design. You can choose the basket, what goes in it, any colour ribbon
and bow you want on it, even with your company name and logo, too. All of which is why Elton John’s gift basket design was adorned with his trademark glasses woven with Saskatchewan wheat. Why the one delivered to Tina Carter at her school on her ninth birthday had a lot about ballet on it, because she’s all about ballet. Why the gift baskets for the International Association of Police Women’s conference, when held in Saskatoon, had chocolate badges and handcuffs to make their event an “arresting” one. That is why Ellie and Creative ComplimentsTM have won ABEX and SABEX awards, as well as Tourism Saskatchewan’s Business Excellence award. Ellie also won four awards at this year’s Celebrate! Gift Baskets international awards show in Las Vegas—including first runner-up for 2012 Designer of the Year.
When designing, it is no wonder Ellie so often hears, “Oh, I’ll leave it entirely up to you. Just do more of your magic!” Creative ComplimentsTM, now celebrating its 25th year, has come to be Saskatchewan’s number one gift basket and flower provider, serving Saskatoon, Regina, and all of Saskatchewan. Cross Canada and global delivery is available— even to a street with no name, just outside Dublin. FLS

into beautiful artwork you are proud to display. “It’s important for our children and ourselves to reflect on where we come from,” says Sherry Morris, owner and founder. Sherry and the rest of the staff take pride in customising their work for you. The store showcases a variety of their services, a good way to get inspiration. Getting photos printed on canvas, restoring old photographs, creating
memorabilia boxes, making shadow boxes, framing posters and prints, and selling original artwork, J & S does it all. With a huge selection of mats and mouldings, the experienced staff will help you narrow down your choices for framing a favourite photo. Since they stock a large inventory and all work is done in house, they can offer a quick turn around as well. If you find an old family photo that is damaged and faded, bring
it into the shop—the staff is phenomenal at restoring items you thought could never look good again. “You’ve taken that stuff out of boxes and made it into a family heirloom,” says Sherry of the memory and shadow boxes. These boxes are a great way to store a memory and tell a story while displaying an original piece of art. Sherry and her skilled staff have filled memory boxes with anything you can imagine—old sewing gear, wedding dresses, quilts, travel maps, currency, tickets, jerseys—any memento that means something to you. They even have a travel box done with trip mementos framed in a coffee table. J & S also offers box frames that open to reveal jewellery storage. If you’re Christmas shopping, J & S has something sentimental and meaningful for everyone on your list. J & S recently received a new 12-colour printer. While their previous printer made amazing prints with only six colours, the staff are excited with what the new printer produces. More colours provide more depth and texture, resulting in more vibrant displays of memories.

Sherry started the business in 1978, gaining experience in Toronto before moving back home to Saskatchewan to begin her own business. “It’s very rewarding. I just love it,” says Sherry genuinely. veryone knows someone whose pet means the world to them. The empty nesters with their excitable puppy, the grandparents with their good old boy, the friend whose Facebook page is filled with pictures of her cat. What better gift to give them than a painting of their furry friend that will last a lifetime?
All of the paintings from Paint My Pet are hand painted in exquisite detail with rich oil paints that give the fur a textured life. The paintings look just like the photo you provide, but with a softer touch and an artistic flair, any flaws in the photograph erased by a thoughtful brush stroke.

Locally owned and operated by Charles Prongua, Paint My Pet started last year when he produced a pet portrait of his mom’s cat and gave it to her as a Christmas gift. He was moved by her reaction and overwhelmed by requests from her friends to produce more hand painted pet portraits. “In this digital age, everyone’s getting iPods and iPhones and laptops,” he said. “It’s nice to give something a little bit more traditional, something personalized that shows some thought when into it.” Prongua has an artistic background: he’s worked in the film industry as a story board artist and as a graphic designer for
several companies. He now has a small pool of pet portrait artists working for him, all who produce high quality work. It takes three weeks from the time you send your photo in to the time you receive the painting, to give the artists enough time to work their magic. But no worries if you’re one of those last-minute Christmas shoppers – Paint My Pet also offers gift certificates. Not only do the portraits show you’ve put careful thought into your gift, they also create new, touching memories that will last a lifetime. receiving gifts, it was hearing from clients after they’d given their pet portrait gifts. “One client gave a gift to his mother and she was so touched, she cried,” he said. “If it’s making people cry with joy, it’s a good present!” The portraits come in a variety of sizes, but Prongua recommends the 20 by 24 inch image because it allows the artist to do more detail. To ensure the surprise is safe when ordering from someone in the same house, Prongua suggests having it delivered to your work or a friend’s place. While the package the painting arrives in is pretty discreet, it does have the company name on it. Customer satisfaction is extremely important to Prongua, which is why he only asks for a 25 per cent deposit initially, and the rest of the cost once buyers see a proof of the painting. The deposit covers the cost of materials. The store is exclusively online, and payments are accepted through PayPal. Visit paintmypet.ca to see some of the impressive images and to order a painting. Prices begin at $358 per month, and Mercedes will waive the first three finance or lease payments on selected C-Class and GLK models. “With these new price points,” Ryder explains, “we’re seeing younger buyers, buyers who don’t want to wait to reward themselves for that promotion—buyers who, now, don’t need to wait.” This new breed of Mercedes-Benz buyer doesn’t just want something that looks good. His customers respect
genuine character and individuality, Ryder reports, and desire a vehicle that reflects their unique sense of style. “They want,” he says, “a vehicle to match their sophisticated tastes.” The C-Class embodies this refinement— with an edge. With plenty of performance power, these vehicles are as exciting to drive as they are to look at. With sleek, aggressively sculpted body work, unrivaled safety features and unparalleled ride comfort, the C-Class proves itself to be among the most refined sports sedans Mercedes offers. They’re true works of art.
In another relatively new development, it’s not only younger professionals gracing the doors of Mercedes-Benz of Saskatoon. “What we’re also seeing is more and more families with young children,” Ryder explains. Particularly popular with this group is the Mercedes GLK, a mid-size SUV that represents a bold departure from convention. As Ryder says, the GLK “embodies a spirit of visual allure set to change the world of mid-size SUVs. That’s how seductive this vehicle is.” Whether driving through rough terrain or navigating city streets, the GLK is both modern and stylish, epitomizing power at play with its dynamically carved lines, aggressive stance and luxuriously appointed interior. From the urban jungle to the real thing, intuitive technologies make every adventure as comfortable as it is exciting. “It’s destined to be a true classic,” Ryder predicts. “The GLK is a bolder, more striking Mercedes, one that pushes the boundaries in every regard.” Mercedes-Benz of Saskatoon also offers an extensive line of certified pre-owned vehicles with impressive financing rates as low as 0.9 per cent. The certified preowned program guarantees peace of mind with its warranty coverage, service and support. “You receive the same benefits of nation-wide customer service and technical support that every MercedesBenz owner enjoys,” Ryder confirms. “Confidence and peace of mind are yours.” At Mercedes-Benz of Saskatoon, Ryder and his team of professionals strive for excellence. “Saskatoon is a sophisticated market,” he says, “and we work hard to recognize that with top-notch service.” As part of the Vaughn Wyant Automotive Group, an organization that comprises seven dealerships in Saskatchewan and three in BC, Mercedes-Benz of Saskatoon is dedicated to providing its clients with the best purchase experience possible. Isn’t it time you checked it out? After all, there’s enough in this world you have to wait for. With fantastic prices and great financing rates, getting a Mercedes isn’t one of them. laine Lee is a proud owner of a BMW. Bema Autosport BMW had the pleasure of introducing Elaine to her new car. This is what Elaine had to say about making the decision to join the growing list of customers at Bema Autosport BMW: “I recently purchased my first BMW. It was such a privilege to have dealt with Harry Dickinson and all the professional staff at Bema Autosport BMW. The friendly and knowledgeable staff made sure my buying experience was both enjoyable and insightful. Not only was I looking for a vehicle that was aesthetically pleasing, but most importantly was its safety. After taking the BMW for a test drive, I was completely enamored and was sold on the vehicle. It is a pleasure to drive such an incredible vehicle and have the support of a wonderful dealership. Bema Autosport BMW fosters outstanding customer service while focusing on developing and maintaining customer loyalty. They definitely go the extra mile to make sure you are well taken care of.” FLS

Should you get Winter Tires?

inter tires are a must. In some provinces it is legislation, and will likely be in Saskatchewan soon as well. As for now, getting winter tires on your car is essential to road safety. Winter tires protect you, your loved ones, and your auto. In comparison to
the price of your vehicle, they are a small investment that can save you thousands of dollars and headaches down the road. Skipping such a vital investment can mean the difference between skidding into the vehicle ahead of you or not.
Hakkapelitta R combines aspects of each, providing exceptional traction and grip for Saskatchewan’s harsh winter driving conditions.
No brand is made for certain makes of cars, and it is important to talk to a professional about the nature of your driving to decide what tires are right for you. At Kal Tire, we engage with you before deciding what options are best suited to your needs.
While all season tires are effective for warm winter weather and short snow seasons, they are not a good choice for a Saskatchewan winter. Most all season tires are only good in temperatures above -7°. Once the temperature drops below that marker, the tires begin to freeze and react similar to hockey pucks on ice. Tires designed specifically for winter weather are made from softer compounds, and don’t freeze in lower temperatures.
Many people consider getting studded winter tires. The stopping distance of studded tires is about 15 per cent shorter than that of a non-studded tire. The action of a studded winter tire is similar to that of a figure skater dragging the pick of their skate across the ice. When looking for winter tires, you must consider the amount of sipping, or cuts, that are on the tread face—a clear way to distinguish between a great winter tire and a cheap tire. Often times the most dangerous winter driving conditions aren’t on the -40° days, but days when it is slushy and wet. These conditions are when the sipping comes in handy, pushing the water and slush away from the tread face and providing better traction. Another great indicator of a good winter tire is the hardness of the tread. A softer tire means more traction on snow and ice. Kal Tire has exclusive access to Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires, a brand known for functioning the best in extreme winter conditions. There are two kinds of winter tires—snow radial and ice radial. Fairly self-explanatory, snow tires are better for people doing country driving on compact snow, and ice tires tend to be better for most city drivers. The Nokian
All Season Tires
A new symbol distinguishing winter tires from all season tires is a snowflake. It helps consumers identify tires that meet the Rubber Association of Canada Snow Traction Performance requirements by providing a higher level of traction in harsh winter conditions. This symbol is located on the sidewall of the tires.
Rims Having a separate set of rims for your winter tires is an excellent way to extend the life of your tires. Using steel or aluminum rims for winter also adds value and convenience to your winter tire investment, along with safety and peace of mind, creating more grip. Two sets of rims also make it easier to switch from your summer tires to your winter tires. If you buy your rims and tires at Kal Tire, we will switch your tires at no charge each season. We also offer exceptional warranties and mechanical repair options at any of our 240 locations nationwide. Make your safety and peace of mind a priority, visit the experts at Kal Tire. FLS

ThE 2013 LExus Ls ”Even if the LS is called ‘The Best,’ that’s really just one moment in time. From that moment on, you have to go about creating the next car.” — LS Chief Engineer

elevated the standard by which all other luxury cars would be judged. Contrary to tradition, no longer would it be acceptable for a luxury car to require an intimate relationship with a repair shop.
History of the LS
This level of innovation does not come easily. The engineering team responsible for the secretly codenamed “F1” project, went to exhaustive lengths to ensure that this new flagship sedan would be a success. The LS spent six years in development, with 2.7 million test kilometres driven, and over a billion dollars in development costs. It was rated the most reliable car for fifteen consecutive years by J.D. Power and Associates and continues to earn the respect of conscious consumers.
Lexus first introduced the LS, its first model, in 1989. When they began production in 1983, the chairman dictated that it be the quietest, most comfortable, best performing, most fuel efficient, and fastest accelerating luxury car in the world. While many doubted him, the team commenced with what would become company’s motto, “The Pursuit of Perfection.” The result was a remarkable car that established new benchmarks for luxury, performance, and reliability that made all other carmakers take notice. Each new iteration of the LS promises to be best in class, while maintaining the skilled craftsmanship that propelled Lexus to the top of the luxury market 18 years ago. The new LS incorporates bold styling cues that reflect the new face of Lexus. Experience the ingenuity and passion behind the fourth generation LS, available now. Let the friendly and knowledgeable staff at Ens Lexus put you behind the wheel. The history of Lexus speaks for itself, but it takes more than a product to make a great brand. Luxury is about an experience, it is about relationships and how the products we use make us feel. Ens Lexus understands this better than most. “Customer service is our main focus. The products that we sell are fantastic, but there are many other choices out there. Our goal is to differentiate ourselves by providing a level of service that our competitors are unable or are unwilling to match. This begins with our people. We have great people that treat our customers as friends—because that is what they are. Our customer retention rate is very high because people like to deal with people they like,” explains Michael Sutherland, Lexus Sales Manager. He cites complimentary services such as brand new Lexus service loaners, complimentary vehicle pickup, and dropoff service and airport pickup and vehicle storage. “Striving to consistently exceed our customers’ expectations is our motto. Our new facility, which will be open in late 2013, will allow us to reach new heights of customer service.” Experience a new level of luxury. Feel the difference. Ens Lexus.. hen your space no longer meets your needs, what do you do?
I recently worked with a couple who was faced with this common dilemma. Retirees Jack and Shirley Berglof asked themselves, “Should we sell our house and move, or modernize it and stay as long as we can?” Some people will choose to work within their existing space, while others will downsize or upsize according to their specific space needs. The Berglofs decided that modernizing their existing space was their best option. I agree— now they can enjoy their home longer, and when it does come time to sell the upgrades are already done. The Berglofs live in a late ’70s bungalow, designed when open living was not yet a

design concept. The kitchen, dining room, and living rooms were all separate closed off spaces, making it difficult to have people over for entertaining. High on the Berglofs’ wish list for their renovations were maximizing their storage capacity and the overall function of the kitchen. The original kitchen was small, approximately eight feet by 12. During our design and planning consultations, we decided that tearing down the wall between the kitchen and dining room made perfect sense. After removing the old patio doors, we added in a new eight foot window to brighten the space. The kitchen has now been doubled and the functionality increased a hundred times over. This upgrade to the kitchen—the first since the house was built—left the couple with room to add appliances:

a dishwasher and an over-the-range microwave and convection oven. I’ve even been able to assist the Berglofs with decorating their new space. Says Jack, “When it comes to pictures on the wall or the color of paint, I have no clue.” With the process complete, what is the Berglofs’ favourite part? “The openness,” points out Jack. “We’ve looked at a lot of new homes, and I’ve always liked open space, especially for entertaining. With our old plan, there was no room for everyone. Now we can have everyone in the same space.” Case in point: the Berglofs recently hosted a get-together for over a dozen people. Not only did their guests enjoy the redesigned space, but there was enough room for everyone to mingle and interact with each other. Jack says, “Now we can enjoy the house.” FLS
