How
3D Printing Could Change the FaCe oF PlastiC surgery By Henny Buffinga
3
D printing is one of the most exciting new technologies to emerge in recent years, most importantly because of the vast implications for almost any industry: manufacturing, shipping, construction, patenting, medicine… the possibilities are seemingly endless. The process works by creating objects one layer at a time, sequentially printing layers of paper, resin, plastic, metal, biomaterial or another material based on a digital scan or model. In medicine, advancements are being made with bio-printing, where the material used in the layering process can consist of skin cells, stem cells or the patient’s own cells, which can create an organ with a lower chance of the patient’s body rejecting it. The $2 billion 3D printing industry is projected to reach $6 billion by 2017, and the field of medicine is welcoming the possibilities of the new technology with successfully printed live tissue and working organs making headlines this year. Plastic surgeons in particular are taking advantage of this new technology in interesting ways. Using 3D printing as an educational tool, surgeons are able to print models of body parts in order to plan complex surgeries. This is the most widely used application of the technology at this time. These precise anatomical models allow a surgical team to evaluate several courses of action before determining the best scenario. The models can serve as a guide to the surgery, where time is critical. Any time saved during surgery means a greater chance at recovery. Another seemingly conventional use of 3D printing is proving invaluable to the cosmetic surgeons. Iranian cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yakub Avsar, for example, is using 3D printing to provide his clients with a more accurate view of themselves and what they would look like post-surgery. Avsar uses this technique with patient’s undergoing a rhinoplasty (nose job) to demonstrate realistic before and after models for his patients. Patients can now see their

new face from all angles and make a more educated decision on their surgery. 3D printing also holds exciting possibilities for aesthetic improvements for procedures such as breast augmentation. The implants could be designed by the plastic surgeon to fit the patient’s measurements and desired changes. This process would provide a customized implant that would suit the patient’s form perfectly. The costs of 3D technology are still high, not least because of the outlay of materials alone, over and above the technology. However, with 3D printers predicted to become more accessible and affordable in the coming years, it is anticipated the technology will become more widely embraced for the many advantages it can provide surgeons, many of them as of yet unexplored, and with seemingly unlimited possibilities for more visually appealing and safe procedures.

ave you ever noticed a ringing in your ear? Tinnitus is the perception of a sound that has no external source. It’s often described as a high-pitched ringing, but can also be described as buzzing, hissing, pulsing, whistling and/or roaring. Tinnitus can be mild in loudness (only noticeable in a quiet room) or it can be extremely bothersome. It can be intermittent or constant. Approximately 150,000 Canadians experience a degree of tinnitus that significantly affects their quality of life. While tinnitus does not cause hearing loss, it may accompany decreased hearing and other symptoms such as

Disorders in the outer ear such as excessive earwax. Disorders in the middle ear such as an ear infection. Disorders in the inner ear such as damage due to noise exposure, hearing loss from aging or Meniere’s disease. Trauma to the head or neck such as concussion or whiplash. Certain medications such as antiinflammatories like aspirin, some sedatives and antidepressants, and certain antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents. An acoustic neuroma or small tumour pressing on the vestibular nerve leading from the cochlea to the brain. Tinnitus may be the only initial symptom. Other causes such as high or low blood pressure, diabetes, vascular disorders, temporomandibular (jawjoint) disorders, allergies and thyroid dysfunction.
The loudness of tinnitus often varies in intensity, depending on several factors including stress, diet and noise exposure. Tinnitus, like chronic pain, is subjective. Two people may report similar characteristics yet be affected in a significantly different manner. Many report difficulty sleeping or concentrating, and many are depressed. TreaTmenT of TinniTus The initial treatment should be directed toward looking for a medical cause of the tinnitus. Anyone with tinnitus should have a complete audiological evaluation by a registered audiologist. A referral to an otolaryngologist may also be recommended. Patients with tinnitus are often told there is no medical cure or treatment. This is not true. Although there may be no cure for the tinnitus, it can often be successfully managed.

1. Understand your tinnitus: Counselling is aimed at reducing the stress associated with it. Meeting with a qualified audiologist can help you understand and manage its perception. 2. Stress management and relaxation: There is a high correlation between stress and an increase in the loudness of one’s tinnitus. 3. Amplification or combination maskers: If hearing loss is present, sounds in your environment can help to reduce the perception. 4. Consideration of diet: High levels of salt and caffeine, as well as nicotine, can often cause an increase in tinnitus. Many sufferers report the presence of background sounds reduce the perception of tinnitus. These background sounds can be present in the environment (e.g. fan noise) or wearable sound generators, which produce sounds at the ear level. This helps improve communication and reduce stress associated with listening, but can also help mask the tinnitus. What You need to knoW for a Sun-Safe Summer!

ewfoundland and Labrador is not known for its sunny weather, but for the sunny disposition of its people. When our province gets a sunny day, we all scramble to take advantage. The Earth’s ozone layer is getting increasingly thinner with each passing year, and the sun’s powerful UVA and UVB rays can be harmful. UVA causes premature aging and wrinkling of the skin, especially to the sensitive areas of your face and eyes. Chemical based sunscreens contain hormone-disrupting synthetic chemicals such as parabens, and chemical penetration enhancers like oxybenzone, which are not proven to protect against UVA rays and/or
skin cancer growth. In fact, a 2007 document from the FDA stated, “The FDA is not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer.” When shopping for safe sunscreens, ask for products that are free from synthetic chemicals. Most active ingredients in sunscreens have shown unsafe results. In one study, the listed chemicals were all detected in plasma one to two hours after one application of sunscreen. Peak average plasma levels were reported to be in the blood at three to four hours after initial application of sunscreen, and participants continued to excrete it many days after the last application of the chemical. A large proportion of the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens can also act as penetration enhancers that speed up the movement of other chemicals through the skin and into the blood. Atlantic Canada’s only professional opera company, Opera on the Avalon is entering its seventh season. This year’s festival runs from May 18th to June 21st, and the company is continuing its tradition of bringing great music and professional performances to the island.

Considering their mandate to make opera more accessible, Opera on the Avalon is performing Best of Broadway for free at Rocket Bakery, as well as The Turn of the Screw at the Garrick Theatre in Bonavista, and hosting a Q&A and brunch with the singers at the Fisher’s Loft in historic Trinity. “I just love the idea of seeing an opera in outport Newfoundland,” she says. “I wish things like that were happening when I was growing up.” L’enfants et les sortileges will also be touring the schools in St. John’s to perform for young students in French. In addition to mentoring young singers who are entering their musical careers, they are also involved in providing meaningful internships and mentorships

A highlight of the evening was a special performance by Wish Ambassador Abby, whose wish to write a song with her favourite band Everglow and have it professionally recorded was recently granted. It is thanks in part to events like The Emerald Ball, that wishes like Abby’s and so many others are brought to life.

here was a buzz in the city earlier this year when it was announced the St. John’s IceCaps would become the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate for the Montreal Canadiens. Starting the franchise as the farm team for the Winnipeg Jets, this is a new era for the local AHL team.

With young stars like Canadian World Junior goaltender Zachary Fucale and AHL rookie scoring runner-up Charles Hudon likely ticketed for St. John’s, the new version of the St. John’s IceCaps will be an exciting team to watch.

Swing of Things Improving Your Golf Game By Trina Annand
W
ith expansive courses and rolling hills, it’s strange to think the game of golf comes down to inches and minor adjustments. It’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference to game performance. A poor play is often blamed on a faulty swing, but there are a number of mechanics that work together to create that coveted perfect game. Every sport requires rigorous practice, a fact often forgotten by those in their early years of the game. “Hitting that ball and making it go where you want it to is the simplest most difficult thing you could ever do,” says professional golfer and coach Liam Mucklow. “The perfect swing is easy to do and hard to repeat.”
It takes hard work and an understanding of the game to achieve greatness. As suggested in Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers: The Story of Success, it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master anything. If you want to perform well at the next tournament or impress your boss, then you need to not just play, but also study the game. Starting early is often a key factor in a player’s success, Mucklow himself was introduced to the sport at age four. He says each player’s idea of practice and goals are different, which is why it’s important to seek out a coach who can observe skills and test physical limits.

ion and Dora Finlay got into the hospitality industry originally by renting furnished apartments. As their company grew, the couple was looking for the right opportunity to expand the scope of their business. When Leaside Manor came on the market, they knew this was the right move. “We had been there before and had great memories of the premises,” Dion says. Now the couple has grown their business into the Leaside Group, which encompasses Leaside Manor, Compton House, Arnold’s Cove Inn, the Leaside Apartments and the newly purchased Monastery Spa and Suites. “As our business grew, Leaside Manor was always our pillar, what we always referred back to, so that’s why we kept the name,” notes Dion. “Leaside Manor really ended up being everything we hoped for and more.” Leveraging the success of Leaside Manor into each step forward has turned the Leaside Group into a very dynamic company. The variety of room types, apartments and meeting spaces they offer has made Leaside a success in St. John’s. PrePare, PrePare, PrePare A detailed renovation plan will help keep you on budget and on time. Set out a specific agreement with your contractor before the work begins. You should be able to see on paper how your renovation is going to play out before it ever begins. Don’t jumP the gun on Purchases Don’t buy materials or appliances until you’ve completely planned out your renovation and all measurements have been taken. Online sales can be tempting, but that great deal on a 24-inch dishwasher isn’t going to save you any money if your entire space has to be redesigned because you only had room for an 18-inch model. Work out your timeline Contractor approximations are simply that, so sitting down and working out a detailed timeline before the reno starts will help keep your contractor on track and yourself on budget. Don’t ignore the issues When you pull down walls or rip up floors, there’s a good chance you’re going to be surprised by something you find, especially in an older home. This might mean an unexpected cost up front, but it will save you tons of money in the long run. Don’t cut corners It’s always better to go the extra mile and do it right the first time. Hiring competent people to do the job, buying quality materials, and taking the time to complete all the necessary steps is key.
communicate With your contractor Constant communication is the best way to ensure everything is going as planned. Decisions that affect design, budget or timeline should ultimately be made by you — an open dialogue will help keep surprises to a minimum. use licenseD traDes Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, asbestos removal, anything to do with gas and anything structural should always be completed by a licensed professional in that specific trade. DeciDe on your Diy I love it when I encounter ambitious homeowners who want to get dirty and take part in their renovation. But projects like cabinet installation, complicated tile work or skilled carpentry exceed the limit of a typical DIY project and can reduce the value of your home if done incorrectly. My advice? Involve yourself heavily in the demo — it’s the funnest part anyway! tained glass makes a statement. Evoking memories of grand cathedrals and old Victorian homes, technology has made stained glass more modern, accessible and affordable for homeowners today. SGO Designer Glass (SGO stands for stained glass overlay) is part of a franchise network that started in the late 1970s in California and has spread throughout 32 countries around the world. he St. John’s Metro Region is the snowiest in North America; in fact, our city is the fourth snowiest city in the world. For most of us, that means braving the extreme weather conditions this island throws at us every morning to shovel and snow blow our driveways just so we can get out of the house. Snow Melt Solutions is a St. John’s based construction technology company that started when owner Josh Nash was shovelling his driveway and wishing for a flamethrower to get the job done faster. After realizing that may be illegal, he started researching heated driveways and quickly found there was no company that specialized in them in the province. Nash decided he was going to do it himself.

After doing his due diligence, Nash put together his system using the best products on the market. With heating cables from Utah and sensors from Denmark, his system is custom designed for St. John’s. The snow melt system consists of a grid of heated cables installed under driveways, building entrances, ramps or anywhere that needs to be clear of snow. The system’s sensors detect temperature and precipitation to know when snow is falling, and activate the cables to melt the snow as it falls. “It’s sometimes hard for people to understand that it doesn’t matter how much snow falls, whether it’s six inches or six feet,” Nash explains. “They think it’s magical, but really it just melts the snow as it falls before it has a chance to build up.”
The system is quick to install and can go in existing concrete and asphalt, or new concrete, asphalt and brick and stone pavers. Consisting of mineralinsulated copper, the heating cables are the same heat trace used on oil and gas pipelines. They are coated in a layer of fiberglass and high-density polyethylene to withstand the movement of the ground as the seasons change, a feature unique to the brand.

Because there are no moving parts in the system, it can last indefinitely and comes with a 10-year warranty on the cables. The system is also very energy efficient since it’s only activated during snowfall, unlike other systems that rely on the homeowner to turn it on and off. Nash is an impressive young entrepreneur. Currently completing his bachelor of business administration at Memorial University, Nash is juggling a full course load with his new business, and business is booming. He recently won the P.J. Gardiner award for small business and entrepreneurship, and his company is turning heads in a cold climate where this service is badly needed. “There’s no reason to shovel anymore,” says Nash. “It should just be automated by now. Seeing how much this has caught on in larger cities around the world, and now in many cities in Canada,

I can see this being standard for most homes, businesses, and even sidewalks downtown within a few years.” Snow Melt Solutions provides peace of mind to their clients, ranging from business owners decreasing their liability from “slip and fall” insurance claims, to retirement homes whose elderly residents can walk in confidence from their building to their car. “With our system, you will never have to shovel or snow blow again,” says Nash. “In our city, it snows 72 days of the year. Chatting WITH THE
ONE BILLION DOLLAR MAN By Tobie Hainstock
I
t all started with 112 avocado green electric can openers. In 1977, Bob Circosta was a talkshow host for an AM radio station when he was approached by the station manager with a situation... a client had paid the station in product. “When the manager asked me to go on-air and sell these can openers for them I thought he was crazy,” he chuckles. To Circosta’s surprise all the can openers sold that day. “I was in total disbelief,” he recalls. “I’m not sure what it was that did the trick, possibly because I had some credibility to my audience as a newsperson.” That was 37 years ago and the home shopping experience has far surpassed many expectations. LIFE’S A PITCH! As a home shopping guru, Circosta has had plenty of experience with sales and marketing over the decades. This has inspired him to write his book Life’s a Pitch, which outlines numerous key elements to successful sales and marketing. Over the years, many have encouraged Circosta to write a book about his work with various celebrities and high profile people. “Rather than doing something like that, I looked at writing something that would help people. I wanted to write something readers could refer to as a resource manual.” He adds that he purposely wrote a book that was not about him, but rather about assisting seasoned business owners and entrepreneurs. SELLING OR SERVING? So, how do you become successful at selling? According to Circosta, the key is not to sell a product. “Take a step back, look at the product and ask yourself, ‘how is this going to help others?’ ” He encourages business owners to advise their staff that they are not selling, they are serving. “Don’t sell,” he advises, “Serve. Help every customer achieve their goal.” Talk about the product and how it can benefit your customer. For example, if you own a shoe store, what you are really selling is style and comfort. Focus on the end result. If you buy these shoes, they will look great and be so comfortable your feet won’t hurt at the end of the day. “This is not a

gimmick, it’s built on complete honesty,” he adds. Being dishonest will only discredit you and you won’t receive a strong repeat clientele. HEALTHY COMPETITION Circosta notes that when it comes to keeping the competition on their toes, customer service is the key. People purchase from a comfort level. Don’t sell to your customers; provide a service and go to great lengths to serve with excellence. Develop relationships with your clientele and they will be loyal to you. Follow that rule of thumb and you won’t have to worry about being competitive. PUTTING WORDS INTO ACTION In conclusion, Circosta says the onus is really on the business owner. If he/she wants a truly successful business, it’s ultimately up to him/her. “I can share technique, but it’s up to you to take action. Gather the information and apply it. If you do it wrong, that’s okay. Everybody fails at something. You’ve just got to do it yourself to succeed.”

ombining the breadth of a general practice firm with the specialities of a boutique firm, Gittens & Associates is a truly unique law firm in Newfoundland and Labrador. presence in order to keep the team’s advocacy skills sharp. It’s easy to get comfortable in the office and avoid going into the courtroom,” he says, but that gives the lawyers at Gittens & Associates an advantage over opposing counsel. Since they are a litigation-oriented firm, their courtroom skills don’t get rusty. “We train the people within the firm to operate from a position of knowledge. The skill set they have they get because they keep practicing those skills. They keep going to court.” When asked about the amount of time an average lawyer at his firm would spend in court he smiles and quickly replies, “Well first of all, we don’t have any average lawyers.” He then explains it varies drastically amongst cases. A lawyer who practices criminal law could spend four out of five days in a given week in court. Family-practice lawyers might spend 10 to 12 days of a 20-workday month in court. Q: My spouse cheated on me, what does that mean for my separation?

A: Divorce laws changed in Canada in the mid-80s to a “no fault” concept. That means you no longer have to prove your spouse did something wrong in order to get a divorce. The only ground for divorce is a breakdown of the marriage. Adultery is one of the ways that a breakdown can be proven. Practically though, cheating will have no impact on how things such as custody and access or property division will be decided. He should have put a ring on it. Q: We lived together for several years but never married; do I have any rights? A: Common-law couples do not have the same rights as married people on separation. If you are not married and property is not registered in your name you will have to prove that you have earned an interest in the property in order to get any share of it. There are several ways you can prove you have an interest. If you are in this situation, you should

Q: We separated and my spouse is not letting me see our children. What should I do? A: It is a child’s right to spend time with both parents. If you and your spouse cannot agree about how the time will be divided then you can apply to the court for an order that outlines the parenting time that each of you will have with the children. I ain’t saying he’s a gold digger, but … Q: I have my children half of the time. Do I still have to pay child support? A: If you have shared parenting, there is no legislated formula for determining child support. If you and your spouse cannot agree on support, the court will look at a number of factors to determine what, if any, child support should be paid. These include both parents’ incomes and expenses, as well as the personal circumstances of each parent.

Attention Assist measures a driver’s reactions through a series of more than 70 indicators, sensing whether they are becoming drowsy and audibly alerting them to take a break, thus reducing accidents caused by fatigue. Through integrated safety technology, MercedesBenz has created one of the safest cars on the road today.
Google and Apple are not the only companies developing autonomous vehicles; it is a concept that has been around since the 1950s. R
on Bavis started working on cars at the ripe age of 14. Ever since then he has known what he wanted to do. With a father and grandfather who were both mechanics, Bavis has a love for cars in his blood and he quickly claimed that passion as his own. At 15, he and a friend started painting cars in his friend’s garage. It started out as a hobby. But he was soon painting cars for companies around town and in his Paradise neighbourhood. As a teenager, Bavis started working part-time in auto

body shops. As soon as he graduated high school he went straight to trade school to get his Red Seal certification in Auto Body — he finished at the top of his class. Nowadays, Bavis is a successful entrepreneur in the auto industry. He is the owner of Bodyworks, an auto body and collision repair centre which opened in 1990 and was previously owned by Hickman Motors. After 13 years as general manager, Bavis purchased the St. John’s location in 2012 and made it his own.

As the largest collision repair centre in Newfoundland, Bodyworks St. John’s can take care of anything, from a small dent to a major overhaul, in their state-of-the-art facilities. They recently installed a new resistant spot welder that can put the panels back on your car as though it was coming straight out of the factory. “We focus on collision repairs, and we can restore cars to better than new condition,” Bavis explains. “We can work on anything from your average daily driver car to a classic or sports car. We can do whatever needs to be done.” Bodyworks St. John’s offers a limited lifetime guarantee on their repairs. “An accident can be a very traumatic experience and we really try to minimize that for the client,” says Bavis. “We strive for perfection in our repair process. If it’s not done right, we make it right.”

These gorgeous vehicles are completely preserved and restored, and some have been completely rebuilt. On top of spotting his cars at various car shows in town, one of his trucks can be seen in the 2012 DuPont Hot Hues Calendar. The truck, a ’63 Chevrolet C10 Pickup, was the only winner chosen from Canada.
