elcome to our spring edition of FineLifestyles Southwest Sask. We again profile a variety of local businesses and services, along with a sampling of the astounding Southwest landscape. The beautiful Living Sky Casino strikes a majestic stance on our cover. Celebrating five years of operation in Swift Current, casino management and staff are proud to play a key role in attracting visitors to the community. The casino is a strong community partner, evident in its support of the Swift Current Centennial celebrations during 2014. And who can resist the magnificent grasslands of the Southwest? The Grasslands National Park near Val Marie and the public prairie pastures continue to lure artists, writers and conservationists to this unique ecosystem. Laureen Marchand, an accomplished artist who relocated to Val Marie from Saskatoon, came to visit and chose to stay. Famous Canadian authors, Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson, toured the area on the Prairie Passages Tour last June, spending time in and around Val Marie. This vast and fascinating landscape provides unforgettable memories for those who venture to this area of the world. This issue’s Community Spotlight shines a light on the issue of bullying. Some Saskatchewan musicians, along with the Red Cross, spread the message of “Imagine No Bullying” to adolescents across the province this past fall in an impressive tour that included a stop in Swift Current. Our national columnists again offer intriguing advice to enhance your personal and home style. Lisa Drader-Murphy is simply “brimming” with love for hats, and Meredith Heron dresses the fifth and sixth walls: the ceiling and floor. Megan Lust provides more healthy eating tips, and W. Brett Wilson reveals his beliefs about human capital and business success. Sit back and enjoy the stunning photos and insights into the elegant “wheels” sported by the British monarchy. Spring is just around the corner now... see you on the deck next issue! finemags

Imagine
NO BULLYING BY ALYSSA RUDYCK
The culture of bullying amongst adolescents is a real and ever prevalent threat. As the tragic stories of young men and women defeated by the torment of their peers make headlines, the heartbreaking reality of bullying has become a focal point of national concern, launching campaigns nationwide intended to inform youths about the dangers of bullying and spread hope to those suffering abuse. This fall, in an effort to provide guidance and promote support, philanthropic musicians Stephen Maguire and Codie Prevost, along with Canadian Red Cross representative Jeanny Buan, brought their anti-bullying campaign, Imagine No Bullying, to schools and communities across Saskatchewan.

uring the presentation, each shared a personal story about personal experiences being bullied while they were growing up. They explained that by staying true to themselves and following their dreams, even in the face of discrimination, they were able to rise above. Maguire, Irish-Canadian folk singer, and Prevost, Canadian country music star, both shared a dream of pursuing music. While playing a selection of fun and uplifting songs for students, the duo encouraged them to find their own passion, and asked that they make an effort to support artists — or anyone else who may seem a little different, as these are the individuals with something special to contribute to the world. They explained to students that they are the ones in control of their future, and that, no matter what anyone else says, they have the ultimate power over their lives. As living proof of individuals who have triumphed over past insecurities, they assured students that anything is possible if you don’t give up on yourself. To help guild the way, the antibullying campaigners suggested that
students pursue self-discovery, draw inspiration from positive role models and deal with their emotions through creative expression. Along with having the power to change their own lives, the Imagine No Bullying team encouraged students to take the initiative to help better someone else’s present. Simply acknowledging someone, even just saying hello to them in the hallway, could make an incredible impact on a person’s life.
with teen suicide to seek help, and talk to someone immediately about how they are feeling. As someone who was bullied during her youth, she assured students that things do get better, and that there is always someone to turn to when you are feeling helpless. Maguire and Prevost ended the presentation with a song they wrote about the importance of putting a stop to bullying. With its distribution to local radio stations, the musicians have certainty it will continue to circulate in each city they visited and give hope to those being bullied.

Brimming WITH LOVE
FOR HATS BY LISA DRADER-MURPHY NATIONAL FASHION COLUMNIST PHOTOS GEOFFREY CREIGHTON
recently had the pleasure of exploring my “hat personality” with famous Canadian Milliner, Edie Orenstein. Imagine my surprise to stumble upon her opulent display of hand-made hats while wandering the Seaport Market in Halifax! I had first become familiar with Edie’s work years prior at her iconic Granville Island, Vancouver store, which I made a point of visiting every time my travels led me to the west coast.

With Edie’s creative genius guiding me, I had so much fun exploring the variety of looks and styles for spring. We narrowed the vast hat-wearing opportunities down to five different looks. Surely every
“Iconic hats and clothing connect us with our history. Collectively, personally, books, movies, world events... We attach our dreams and alter egos to stories of history.” – Edie Orenstein, Milliner
Iconic—I loved wearing this style! The Panama-style hat exudes confidence, yet the brim is wide enough to provide a hint of privacy. This style conjurs visions of the English manor house, surrounding gardens and nearby stables. It exudes taste, sophistication and elegance.

Gatsby—The flapper girl of the roaring 20s is the independent, unattached, unrestricted, flamboyant woman, not having to adhere to the rules. The “cloche” that topped the sweet pin curls and finger waves of the girls of this era has been a style that has endured the test of time and to this day is the most popular selling shape in women’s hats. It’s one of my favourite sassy silhouettes to pull off the “I’m sweet, and a little bit mischievous” look!
Romantic—The romantic hat harkens back to an innocent time. Pure, lovely, uncomplicated, these hats are everything feminine, natural, and emotionally driven. You may don a romantic hat whenever you’re in the mood for it, not just for the garden party. Wear this look when shielding oneself from the harshness of life. “Romantic fashion and hats transport us to a gentler, magical place, where things are simpler.” – Edie Orenstein, Milliner

occasion-style hats mark formal events of any sort. “Fashion is the non-verbal language of humanity (society) past and present. Hats are the accent, the flourish, and the poetry of that language regionally and globally.” – Edie Orenstein, Milliner “Fashion, like any language, and the use of it, is affected by culture, religion, politics, education, station, experience, personal identification of “tribe.” It all adds up to expression — personal, collective, conscious and unconscious. It says, “I belong,” “I am different,” or even “I’m trying to hide or disappear.” – Edie Orenstein, Milliner Lisa Drader-Murphy is one of Canada’s preeminent fashion designers, and presides over one of the few remaining fashion houses in the country to design, cut, and sew all of their own garments. Travel & Leisure—The fedora is one of the easiest styles to wear. It is casual and comfortable, yet chic with its multinational flavour. It’s pack-ability and versatility transforms day to night looks. The style is light-hearted, playful, and somewhat androgynous. I love the juxtaposition of the masculine structure adorned with feathers, flowers and ribbon. Occasion—Some hats “rise to the occasion,” like a tuxedo or uniform. There is no mistaking that this is a special event. Imagine horse races, weddings, bar mitzvahs, elegant luncheons, cocktails;

Spring Cleaning
FOR OUR
BODIES
HEALTHFUL, MOOD-BOOSTING TIPS TO WAKE UP YOUR INSIDES BY MEGAN LUST
I
t’s that time of year again: to shake out all the winter blahs and get down to spring cleaning. Spring cleaning for your body, of course.
Quite often we forget what we put our bodies through during the cold winter months in Canada. We’ve indulged in all manner of goodies and treats, kept our bellies full of comfort foods to keep us warm and cosy, and enjoyed our wine and beverages. Spring is a perfect time of year to give our bodies a gentle “reset” and get our busy spring and summer months off to the best possible start. You don’t have to employ a rigorous detox for weeks on end; a few simple changes and additions to your daily routines should be sufficient and can be easy to maintain.
Here are a few suggestions: Eat Real Food. Real whole foods give your body the fuel it needs to regenerate and heal. Enjoy a menu rich in dark leafy greens, flavourful vegetables of all kinds, whole grains, nutritious legumes and beans, nuts and seeds, and low-sugar fruits. Ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need from a diet varied in these healthful options. You need an adequate amount of calcium, magnesium, iron, and vitamins A–Z. Pause The Treats. Give your body a bit of a break and a chance to be reinvigorated. Avoid processed foods, sugar, dairy, caffeine and alcohol. Greatly reduce (or eliminate) your intake of animal proteins. Chances are that after a week your cravings for sugary snacks and caffeine will have all but disappeared. Drink Up. Most of us probably need reminders to drink our eight to 10 glasses of water a day. Drinking enough water will help flush

out those toxins you’re trying to get rid of. Start your day out right by waking up and enjoying a glass of water with fresh lemon squeezed in. The health benefits are endless. Get A Boost. If you’re feeling snacky or a bit lethargic — or perhaps you’ve been rushed and know you’re not making proper food choices on a certain day — a healthy green smoothie can be just what you need to get over that hump, clear the brain fog and help you avoid grabbing an unhealthy snack that you’ll regret later. Check out our recipe for Green Ginger and Lime Smoothie that even a green-smoothie newbie will love! Consider making a commitment to implementing these healthful choices for at least 10 days and you’ll notice a difference. You will be energized, happy, healthy and glow — from the inside out.
GREEN GINGER & LIME SMOOTHIE
A detoxifying green smoothie that is mildly flavoured for those who are new to green juices and smoothies. Makes 1 green smoothie. • 1/2 cucumber, peeled and cut up into large chunks • 1 apple, cored and cut up into large chunks • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced • 1-2 large handfuls baby spinach • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup • juice of 1 lime • 1-2 tablespoons water, coconut water, unsweetened non-dairy milk, optional (if needed) Place all ingredients into the blender jar. Blend until smooth. If you don’t have a high-powered blender, you may need to add the water, coconut water or non-dairy milk to help it along. Drink immediately.
FACTS n Ginger is well-known for its antiinflammatory properties and is a digestive aid. n Limes are anti-carcinogenic. n Cucumbers are loaded with vitamin B and are rehydrating. n Spinach is high in iron and flavonoids, which are anti-oxidants.

WLF MEDICAL’S CORPORATE PLAN Educating Employees on Weight Loss Surgery and Saving You Money BY ALYSSA RUDYCK PHOTOS HEATHER FRITZ
O
besity is a medical condition that, based on a recent study conducted by Statistics Canada, affects over 50 per cent of the national population. Individuals living with obesity struggle everyday to find normalcy in their lives, often suffering from additional medical health problems, as well as psychological issues that stem from negative body image. While these factors can be extremely detrimental to the overall wellness of the individual, obesity affects the workplace as well. While dieting and exercise are two important aspects of healthy living, for
many people who struggle with obesity these tools alone are often not enough - which is where WLF Medical steps in. WLF Medical is a bariatric program that offers weight loss and cosmetic surgery, and provides patients with comprehensive educational and followup programs. “We change people’s lives,” says Melanie Wildman, president and CEO of WLF Medical in Saskatoon. “People who suffer from [obesity] face discrimination every day, as well as health problems such as type two diabetes, hypertension, and fertility problems. Even cancer rates are higher. [Weight loss surgery] transforms
people’s health. It gives them a healthy future to look forward to, and on top of all of that there is also the emotional and psychological wellbeing that comes from feeling normal. You get your life back.” As a business owner who struggled with obesity herself for many years before undergoing bariatric surgery, Wildman not only has an intimate understanding of the physical and emotional repercussions of being overweight, but of the economic impact that obesity can have in the workplace as well. “For any business that has three or more employees, the odds are that one of those employees will have a weight ABOVE RIGHT Melanie Wildman, owner WLF Medical

problem,” Wildman states. “What a lot of small or medium business owners and HR professionals don’t necessarily understand is the cost that companies bear when their employees suffer from obesity. For example, companies could see significant savings in plans and packages, because employees who have weight loss surgery access those plans less often for things like sore knees, sleep apnea, depression and migraines [which] cause the overall cost of the plan to become more affordable not only for the employer, but for other employees as well.” “A regular-weight woman, for example, will on average miss three days of work a year, [while] someone who suffers from obesity will miss more than eight,” Wildman attests. “We also know that productivity goes up by over 30 per cent
for employees who are no longer obese, simply because they feel better and have a more positive outlook on life. They are [no longer] weighed down by sore knees or carpal tunnel syndrome or migraines, so they are healthier and more engaged at work. If you put all that together, then there is a significant cost saving for employers.” Wildman strongly believes that implementing a program to educate employees on the benefits of weight loss surgery is mutually beneficial for employers, which is why WLF Medical offers a corporate plan, and why she chooses to offer it to employers free of charge. “There is no cost to employers to participate in the program,” Wildman emphasizes. “It is an educational tool,
as well as a benefit that they can offer, at no charge, to their employees. If they have four or more employees and they are part of the corporate program, then they can also access WLF services at a discounted rate.” Please contact WLF Medical for more information on corporate programs and how to include WLF Medical services in your company’s benefits plan.

From the bison to the blackfooted ferret, the scope of Grasslands National Park’s wildlife is incomparable. Yet the park isn’t only an enclave of animal life — it’s also a haven for history. “The archaeological record of Grasslands National Park is rich and provides insights into the lives of people on the northern plains over the last 5,000 years,” says the park’s “visitor experience manager,” Shelly Duquette Larson. “There are literally thousands of precontact sites recorded within Grasslands National Park.” The history within the park goes further back than five millennia – millions of years OPPOSITE Sunset over the Grasslands, photo by Branimir Gjetvaj FineLifestyles

further, since Parks Canada’s Grasslands National Park website states that “the East Block Badlands are one of the richest resources for dinosaur fossils in Canada.” In fact, since the park is a “dark sky preserve,” some of its superstar attractions are not millions but billions of years old. “It has been said by astronomers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) that Grasslands National Park is the ‘darkest’ dark sky preserve,” says Larson, which in part “means that GNP has one of the brightest starlit skies.”
Val Marie, Grasslands Community Alongside Grasslands National Park lies the village of Val Marie — a real-life example of the ineffable charm which popular thinking so often ascribes to small towns. “People here wear all kinds of hats in order to make the whole community run,” notes Val Marie administrator, Cathy Legault. “We’re very friendly. We’re very flexible.”
Just ask artist, Laureen Marchand, who relocated to Val Marie in 2009. She was first introduced to the village by a friend who had settled there. “I would come down to visit her,” Marchand reminisces, “and I’d sit on her deck and think ‘maybe I just won’t go home.’ ” Soon enough, Val Marie became home. “One day I heard that a house was available,” says Marchand. “I was in my car by two in the afternoon, and saw the house about 7:30 that evening, and owned it at noon the next day.” In Val Marie, Marchand founded the Grassland Gallery. “The gallery really focuses on art that in some way represents, or is inspired by, the grasslands experience,” explains Marchand, who currently exhibits and sells work by “almost 30” artists. (The gallery may be reached by phone at 306.298.7782, but also maintains an online presence at www.grasslandsgallery.com.) “[The grasslands influence] doesn’t have to be purely representational,” she notes. “Sometimes it’s an image. Sometimes
it’s a colour.” And although “very little of it relates directly to the grasslands,” Marchand says, “I do show my own work at the gallery.” (If you don’t get to the Grasslands Gallery before spring, you can view Marchand’s creations in her upcoming Art Gallery of Regina show, Beholder.) Marchand also chairs Prairie Wind & Silver Sage – Friends of Grasslands, a Val Marie landmark nicknamed PWSS for short. Under the roof of a onetime one-room schoolhouse, PWSS blends bookstore, café, gallery, gift shop and museum into a one-of-a-kind Val Marie cultural hub (accessible online at www.pwss.org). Its multidisciplinary framework already renders PWSS unconventional, so it’s no surprise that the facility is in the midst of a brand new innovation: creating an “ecomuseum.” Marchand largely credits the Royal Saskatchewan Museum’s Glenn Sutter with the ideas that spurred the ecomuseum’s inception. “His take is that the traditional museum says ‘we’re the

for Conservation of Nature says that grassland is one of the most endangered biomes on the planet,” he says. “We’ve only got [approximately] 18 per cent of our native prairie left in Saskatchewan.”
Last year’s anonymous $10,000 gift, relayed to PWSS via the Edmonton Community Foundation, is certain to bolster PWSS’s new plans. “We don’t know who it came from or how it came about,” says Marchand, “but what it means to us is that someone believes in what we’re doing.”
“Prairie Passages” was a collaborative creation of BirdLife International and Public Pastures: Public Interest (PPPI). PPPI is dedicated to protecting the pastureland currently being relinquished from federal to provincial possession. “There were 60 of them [the pastures] in Saskatchewan, totalling 739,000 hectares,” says Trevor Herriot, PPPI cochair. “Those big chunks of grassland in those federal community pastures are crucial to conserving habitat, but also to conserving the ranch economy for smallto medium-sized ranchers.”
Branimir Gjetvaj, who served as photographer for the Prairie Passages Tour, offers an eloquent appraisal of the grasslands’ allure. “In one sense, it’s huge, it’s limitless open space. There are no boundaries. As far as you can see, there are no human settlements. It is eerie, quiet, and no light pollution to obstruct the view of starry skies.”
Public Pastures — Public Interest and the “Prairie Passages Tour” Not long ago, PWSS greeted a prestigious pair of visitors: iconic Canadian authors, Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson. The two wordsmiths stopped at the village during last June’s “Prairie Passages Tour,” which introduced Atwood and Gibson to local pasture patrons and
PPPI challenged the provincial government’s initial intention to sell the pastures to private buyers. That plan has since been revised (at least for the present) into a leasing arrangement, Herriot notes. “The International Union
But, he continues, that’s just the big picture. “Oh the other hand […] when you go down to the ground level, there are hundreds of different flower species. They are small and tiny, but beautiful in their own world. So there are basically two different worlds. One is this vast, open space, and one is tiny, close to the ground.”

Mayor Roland Facette of Val Marie has occupied his post “[for] about 12 years,” he says; prior to that, he spent an even lengthier period as councillor. Facette’s pride in Val Marie shines forth as he expounds on the village’s multicultural history and on the many converts to its way of life. “It’s a real friendly town. Everybody finds that out when they come here,” says Facette. “When they come here to work […] they never leave after that. They like Val Marie.”
Since his school days, Branimir Gjetvaj has been an avid photographer. He now organizes instructional photography tours which enable small groups of photographers to “visit exceptional locations” and capture selected natural environments’ beauty. These ventures include trips to Grasslands National Park, the Great Sandhills, and Prince Albert National Park. s a gaming, dining and entertainment venue, host of an annual Pow Wow, and a major sponsor of this year’s Centennial Homecoming celebration, Living Sky Casino plays an integral role in the community of Swift Current. Celebrating their 5th anniversary this year, the casino is set to continue giving back to the community, as well as strengthening its operations and partnerships.
Trevor Marion, who has worked with the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) for the past 16 years and with Living Sky Casino since 2008, took on the position of general manager in February of this year. Marion says that using the data the casino has gathered on its market and visitors over the past five years will enable the business to market itself effectively, capitalizing on its Highway 1 location. “We’ve got 1.4 million vehicles passing
through annually,” says Marion. “We want to be a target for tourists travelling through, and to try to get them to stay in Swift Current, which opens them up to shopping and entertainment throughout the city.” On the weekend of June 14 and 15, Living Sky Casino’s 3rd annual Pow Wow will take place at Kinetic Exhibition Park. A traditional First Nations dance event, the Pow Wow has drawn over 3,000 people

to the city in past years, and will be an attraction leading up to the Centennial Homecoming celebration June 26 to 29. The Pow Wow features traditional and competitive dancing, with different groups performing a variety of dancing styles. The outdoor event will be held in the SIGA event tent, offering over 17,500 square feet of coverage with bleacher seating provided. Camping is also available this year, which Marion says may draw even more attendees. “It’s a beautiful display of colour and dance,” says Marion. “Ambassadors are there to answer any question you might have. It’s a free event, and everyone’s welcome to come out and enjoy it.” Living Sky Casino has contributed $20,000 to the Centennial Committee in sponsorship of the Homecoming weekend. In addition, they are providing the SIGA event tent — which will be called the SIGA Centennial Pavilion — to be used for family entertainment and late-night cabarets. Marion says the June 29th concert will be put on by Living Sky Casino in the Pavilion and will likely feature a rock band hired from out of town for the occasion. All entertainment held at the Pavilion is designed to draw people to the Centennial celebration, bringing the community together and attracting visitors. Living Sky Casino sponsors Frontier Days’ fireworks show annually, and this year is anticipating an exciting display. “Traditionally it’s a great show for people of all ages,” says Marion.

“Sponsoring is about sharing and giving back, and it’s nice to be able to celebrate with fireworks.” With more than 200 employees, Living Sky Casino is one of Swift Current’s largest employers. Its role as a community partner is shown year-round in many ways. The casino helps sponsor such groups as the Swift Current Broncos, Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation, United Way and the annual Windscape Kite Festival. Its volunteer program offers an incentive of four hours’ extra pay annually for employees who perform a designated number of volunteer hours in the city. “Communities rely on their local sponsors, and I know they rely on us,” says Marion. “As a casino we want to give back. We budget for that annually: to try to be a strong community partner.” Living Sky Casino features ticket-in/ ticket-out slot machines, eight live table games, and a restaurant and lounge, enabling it to cater to a range of visitors. Its Sky Centre seats up to 565 in concert seating, and up to 280 in banquet seating, as well as various other configurations. The Sky Centre hosts several major acts each year, from country to jazz performers and live theatre. These dining and entertainment options, combined with its prime location, make the multifaceted facility an excellent venue for both local and visiting guests. The casino works with hotels in the area in an effort to best serve visitors and increase traffic for local businesses. “SIGA’s vision is sharing success,” says Marion. Looking forward, Living Sky Casino will continue to promote itself through various media, working to draw more people through its doors and into the city at large. “We’re not an infant casino anymore,” says Marion. “We’re a little bit older, and being here from the start, I know the challenges that we’ve had. Now, it’s about getting the team ready to take on new challenges, and to capture that tourist visitation. We want to be that attraction to shop, eat and play.” Living Sky Casino 1401 North Service Road East Swift Current 306.778.5759 LEFT Living Sky Casino staff

n the morning of June 26, Swift Current residents will come together for a pancake buffet, live music from local band, Midnight Roses, and a ceremonial Branding of the Frontier Days logo — and that’s just the kick-off to an exciting weekend of events. Frontier Days draws crowds annually for its rodeo, livestock competitions and entertainment. This year, they will also feature activities celebrating the past, present and future in honour of the city’s centennial year. “We’re helping celebrate the centennial by having the two events together,” says Lenora Bells, event development coordinator for the Swift Current Agricultural and Exhibition Association. “We’re excited to see everybody gathering, having a great time and sharing community spirit. It will be a reminder to everyone about where they come from and what we’re all about here. The theme is ‘Saddle up for the Ride of a Century.’ ” Along with Frontier Days events such as the CCA rodeo, 4-H competitions, horse shows and grandstand entertainment, this year Kinetic Exhibition Park will feature a Centennial Pavilion presented by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Association (SIGA). The Pavilion will showcase a variety of musical entertainment, from free family stage shows to latenight cabarets. Over the last several years, Swift Current has become increasingly diverse, with a range of cultural groups joining the community. One of the weekend’s highlights will be the Multicultural Pavilion, with cultural groups sharing their history and traditional arts, crafts and entertainment. “There will be dance groups, singers, folklore, music and food,” says Bells. “People from all different countries can learn about each other and raise cultural awareness.” In the Hometown Heritage Exhibits Pavilion, Swift Current’s history will be displayed through photos and memorabilia. This showcase of the past
will be an enlightening way to learn about the city’s evolution over the last century. Throughout the four-day celebration, many kids’ activities will be featured, such as a tractor pull and circus with magic and a roving robot. On the morning of Saturday June 28, a parade will take place on Main Street, with marching and pipe bands, Western Development Museum Calliope, a mechanical horse and decorated floats. Various community groups will participate. Other weekend attractions will include Saturday’s Market Square featuring vendors, family activities and games on 1st Avenue. Memorial Park will feature stage entertainment, and the Art Gallery of Swift Current will showcase original works by artists of the Southwest. The event’s finale will be an extravagant fireworks display on the evening of Sunday, June 29. Centennial Passports will give participants the chance to win prizes. Those interested in Swift Current’s dynamic history can embark on a Historical Walking Tour, with guides available for $3 at the Swift Current Museum. The tour highlights 32 of the city’s historically relevant buildings and sites, including the Imperial Hotel and the Lyric Theatre. People interested in guided group tours can contact the museum for scheduling. Booklets are also offered for a Historical Creek Tour, showing sites such as where the city’s first homesteads were located. Event organizers are encouraging residents to invite family members and plan reunions to coincide with the Centennial celebrations. “It’s a great opportunity to get people back in the community who haven’t been home for a while,” says Erin Gehl, project coordinator. “The Centennial Committee is looking forward to showcasing what the city of Swift Current has become. People visiting can see all the different businesses that have grown. Our city is beautiful and has a lot to offer. Perhaps for people coming for the weekend, it will turn into a longer stay.”

Staff members at The Brick are very close knit and work together as a team to offer their customers impeccable service. Their dedication to your satisfaction is top priority. Desmond explains that their salespeople work on a commission basis, and although the thought of commission salespeople can make customers shiver in their boots, there is no cause for alarm at The Brick. You won’t find a high pressure salesperson trying to sell you something that you don’t want. Commission sales has changed over the years and is now only about delivering and retaining a customer`s business. “Because our sales staff is commissioned, they will make the extra effort and go out of their way to make sure our customers are happy,” says Desmond. “Our staff gets paid to sell to people to keep them happy; this makes a huge difference in the quality of service that customers receive.” A strong leadership team is a positive influence in any workplace, and Desmond is quick to acknowledge this. Since his arrival at the store in 2012, Matt Craig, general manager, has helped the store grow into a strong local business that provides top-of-the-line products and the best in customer service. “Matt has done a fantastic job,” comments Desmond. “This past year has been our best ever, and it’s all thanks to our incredible staff and Matt’s leadership.” TOP L-R Matt Craig, general manager and Desmond Derosier, operating partner FineLifestyles

DRESSING THE FIFTH &
Sixth Walls BY MEREDITH HERON
I
see the effort people often expend in choosing the perfect wall colour, but all too often they miss the opportunity to dress their fifth and sixth walls: floors and ceilings. For that matter, there is nothing I love more than adding a bit of unexpected to a ceiling or a floor. Ironically, I find it easy to convince clients to adorn a child’s ceiling in either a nursery or a toddler’s room — less so in other areas — but they are always game to dress these rooms up.

the remaining walls. I tend not to do this with just paint; I prefer it to be a paper or a pattern using paint-like striping. This is for the little lady above brother’s room, so we painted the stripes on the ceiling to liven things up a bit.
| If you paint your walls a deep colour, you
|
may not want to leave your ceilings a pure white. We often soften our ceiling colours a bit and use a chalky white or opt for a different colour altogether. This makes the transition less jarring and keeps the room feeling bigger and more open. People often ask me whether or not they paint their crown moulding the same as the wall colour or make the ceiling colour different altogether. I tend to match my crown to the ceiling unless I’m opting for a different colour on the ceiling. In that case, I make sure my crown and my trim match so that the ceiling colour will stand out. Once you’ve addressed your ceilings, look down to the floors. Area rugs are a great way to lessen the bowling-alley feel if you have hardwood floors, although I often get people who claim they want to see their floors — their big ticket investment item. I usually point out that the contrast of an area rug on the floor will only serve to highlight the flooring and do double duty to anchor the furniture arrangement, which is always more pleasing to the eye. There are so many options for area rugs these days; indulge me as I share a few of my own favourites.
Ideally, when papering a ceiling, the room should have crown moulding. I don’t always stick to this, but it really does yield a much more impactful finished product.
| In this space, we added a hand-blocked
wallpaper to a nursery for a sweet young lady. The bonus is that it really is only one wall of wallpaper, so it requires a minimal investment. I am not a fan of accent walls unless they are ceilings or if they make sense in the architectural layout of the room. I’m willing to concede a headboard wall, for example, but you have to make sure that you have achieved balance on

In this two-storey living room, we needed to make the seating area feel more intimate and inviting. We opted for a custom-designed hide area rug. The Align rug is part of my new exclusive collection of rugs. It’s a tone-on-tone hide, and the geometric pattern adds some life to the arrangement without being overly bossy. It both grounds the space and keeps it feeling open and airy — no easy task!

We wanted to have fun in this foyer. The clients love colour, and they are not shy and retiring in their choice to adorn the walls in a deep magenta. We knew that opting for a bold colour on the walls meant we had to balance it out with a statement piece for our area rug. Our Max rug does just that. We’ve married it with this custom daybed in lieu of a regular bench/ console unit and then pumped it up with our pillow story. I love to make bold statements in a foyer; transition spaces are where risks can be taken. Pattern and colour on either a ceiling or a floor require minimal commitments and are easy to change. Wallpaper these days is not made the same way as in the past, nor is it as traumatic to remove it or change it up. We always recommend hiring a professional installer to prepare your walls and hang your paper, and warn that if you are inclined to do it yourself, to never do it with your spouse; more divorces happen because of cowallpapering attempts!

hen Ramnik Parmar bought a Beachcomber Hot Tub more than 12 years ago, he was looking for something to help him reconnect with his kids and grandkids. It would be a gathering place where they could talk and laugh without the distractions or interruptions of electronic devices. To Ramnik, a hot tub seemed to be a practical choice.
Machine Shop. Vim wanted a hot tub for his teens to bring their friends home to, as well as a place to unwind at the end of a long workday.
After moving to a new home several years later, Ramnik passed his hot tub on to his son Vim, co-owner of Wheatland

store no longer in the city. Rather than purchasing product out of town, the opportunity arose to acquire the local Beachcomber Hot Tub franchise. There were countless hot tub users in the city and surrounding area who also required water care products, and the partners soon realized that carrying the Beachcomber product line was a logical solution. “With no Beachcomber store here, we had no option but to purchase product outside the city. We decided quite selfishly that it would make our lives
easier if we carried some of the water care products ourselves,” says Parmar. “We knew others were in the same predicament, and would require water care products too. The solution seemed sensible to stock the necessary products, and sell them from our current location.” It was an idea that grew larger than either partner could have imagined.
“Our history and our business nature, is that if there’s a problem, we’re going to fix it.” “As we looked into selling products, and talked with Beachcomber to accomplish that goal, our talks expanded to include becoming an authorized Beachcomber Hot Tub store,” says Parmar. They pursued the notion of becoming an authorized store, and how it might fit into their current business operation at Wheatland. The idea of merging a machining shop with a hot tub store seemed a bit of a stretch, however the more they thought about it, the more it made sense. “We had the necessary infrastructure,” says Parmar. “We had the space, front end staff, an established accounting system, and the necessary manpower and equipment for service and deliveries. We even had a large established clientele who were familiar with the level of customer service they could expect.” The biggest factors in their decision to become a Beachcomber store were the quality products and the knowledge that Beachcomber stands behind those products – much like Wheatland Machine Shop itself. “Our business history and customer satisfaction record has translated into many years of satisfied customers. Our motto has been ‘If there’s a problem, we’re going to fix it’,” says Parmar. “If our customers are happy, they’re going to spread the word, and word of mouth is our best form of advertising.” “As it turns out, Beachcomber has been a perfect fit for both our families and our business,” adds Parmar. “We’ve experienced firsthand the value it brings to relaxing after a hard day’s work and the value it has brought to our business. It’s been a win-win situation.” Beachcomber Hot Tubs 1506 Sidney Street West Swift Current 306 773 3956 wheatlandmachine@sasktel.net www.beachcomberhottubs.com l-r Wade Carlson, Vim Parmar and Dennis Letwiniuk

W. BRETT WILSON on Capital Appreciation
Demonstrating Respect to Build a Better Business BY TONYA LAMBERT PHOTOS HEATHER FRITZ, COURTESY OF PRAIRIE MERCHANT CORP.
Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist and investment banker, W. Brett Wilson believes that respect is a key ingredient to success in all areas of one’s life — personal and professional. According to Wilson, to be treated with respect is a basic human desire, and people soon lose interest in relationships where this is lacking. Indeed, Wilson writes that a lack of respect in the workplace is the most common reason people will leave a job. “The most important asset you will ever have, and the one that appreciates the most, is the human capital you hire, develop and retain,” says Wilson. In other words, if you want to grow your business, you need to attract and retain good people, and to do that, you need to establish a work environment that is based upon mutual respect.

person’s word and handshake should mean something, and he often closes a deal on that very basis. Leaders also need to set an example by being honest. He advises that if you do not know something, admit it; but also be sure to let people know that you are taking steps to acquire the information. If you make a mistake, admit it and learn from it. Wilson believes mistakes are opportunities for learning, and that a mistake is only a failure when you do not learn from it.
“
Respect is an essential part of a successful company. It’s the responsibility of a business leader to foster an environment of respect in the workplace so that line managers in turn treat their employees with courtesy and appreciation.”
W
ilson chooses what he says carefully, demonstrating both a love of words and a respect for their power. He expresses a belief that everyone should understand their own definition of important words, and know what success and respect means to them. He gives as an example a person’s definition of success, which will reflect their values and determine their approach to everything in life, including business. Whether their definition of success is a large bank account or being a great dad, it will be reflected in personal choices. Without a clear understanding of what key words and concepts mean to you, he says, you will be directionless and your business and relationships will flounder. Wilson’s book, with its reflective title — Redefining Success: Still Making Mistakes — is a thoughtful consideration of definitions. He writes, “For me, respect is the ability to value another person and
their perspective. It involves treating people with courtesy and kindness. Respect is not the same as agreement. In fact, it is a basic sign of respect to trust people enough to tell them when you disagree. But respect should dictate how you express your opinion.” Wilson says that attitude is everything. He has no interest in doing business with someone whose attitude is winat-all-costs; he chooses, rather, to deal with those who treat others fairly and respectfully. This approach is geared towards long-term success rather than short-term gain. Trust, he says, is a key component of respect; you cannot respect someone whom you cannot trust. Business leaders need to ensure that their employees, partners and clients know that they are trustworthy by honouring their commitments. Wilson believes that a
Employees and clients need to be able to trust that business owners and managers will deal with problems in a timely and respectful manner. According to Wilson, it is the rare employer who deals with an under-performing employee in a timely fashion. Most employers will allow problems to continue on a lot longer than they should because most people by nature avoid conflict. Unfortunately, such delays undermine a sense of trust in management. Furthermore, Wilson advises that once an issue has been dealt with, it should be left alone; do not go picking at scars. Another way to create respect in the workplace, Wilson advises, is through establishing mutual interests. This can be done in many ways. First, everyone needs to know the company’s aims and the plans in place to achieve them; that way, everyone feels they are a part of things. One way that Wilson achieves this is by beginning each day with everyone gathered together for what he terms “the office huddle.” Second, if people understand the company’s goals and plans, they can then contribute to their attainment by voicing their concerns about what is not working and sharing their ideas on how to improve performance. Listening to the ideas and concerns of your staff and acting on them when deemed appropriate, Wilson adds, fosters feelings of mutual interest and respect. This leads to the third and, possibly most important, component to establishing respect in any relationship: communication. Leaders need to convey their ideas, thoughts, feelings and concerns to others in a constructive manner, while at the same time listening to their ideas, thoughts, feelings and concerns in an open, thoughtful, nonjudgmental way. Wilson says that a willingness to communicate shows that you value the other person. An employee

who feels valued will work harder and more creatively, be loyal to the company, and contribute to an overall positive atmosphere at work. Wilson advises companies to participate in team-building exercises to help build trust and mutual interests, as well as to foster better communication. In his own companies, staff have participated in a variety of activities — often outdoors — which require them to work together to achieve a goal. If you place people first, Wilson says, you will have a better chance of success; this is true in your personal life, as well as in the business world. The tagline of FirstEnergy, an energy-focused investment bank that Wilson co-founded in 1993, is “Our focus is energy, but our passion is people.” The huge success achieved by this company is proof that people are a company’s number one asset and that investing in them is of the utmost importance. Wilson writes, “When you’re investing in someone, think of it as a relationship rather than a transaction. The best relationships are based on trust, respect and mutual interests. And those relationships are the best way to make money.” Demonstrate respect to others — business partners, employees, clients and even competitors — and you will not only earn their respect in return, but also see your capital appreciate. W. Brett Wilson has earned the distinction of being one of Canada’s top investment bankers; FirstEnergy is a globally recognized energy-investment firm, of which Wilson was a founding member. His success as an entrepreneur has led Wilson into the Canadian spotlight where he has been a co-star of The Dragon’s Den and host of Risky Business. Wilson is also widely known for his philanthropy, a focus in his life to which he lends his energy, marketing expertise and mentorship. Wilson hails from North Battleford, Saskatchewan. His book, Redefining Success: Still Making Mistakes (2012) is published by Penguin Group, Canada and widely available in bookstores. hen investors think of risk, the first thought that comes to mind is losing money. Avoiding permanent capital loss is a paramount investment principle, but investors should be mindful of other lurking risks that impact the growth of their wealth. One example is purchasing power risk — the negative impact of inflation and taxes eating away at annual returns — especially for those investing in term deposits, GICs or high-interest savings. Concentration risk occurs when a significant portion of personal wealth is in one sector or one company. This might include a risk-averse investor holding only GICs, or an investor with a significant number of shares in one individual stock. Permanent capital loss
Concentration also presents itself as a risk when an investor makes a bold call, such as investing in only commodities like gold or other precious metals waiting for “economic Armageddon.” It’s important to learn about and understand investment risks, as they can be increased without an investor knowing. An important one to be aware of is the behaviour of the investor themselves. Humans have both rational and irrational tendencies. Behavioural finance is defined as the application of psychology to gain an understanding of human emotion and behaviour when it comes to finance and investing. In other words, how do humans impact investment success with their own actions and attitudes towards investing? Cognitive biases are statistical, information processing or memory errors that are common to all human beings. Some recognizable examples include: • overconfidence in personal reasoning, judgement and predictive abilities • discomfort when presented with information that conflicts with preexisting beliefs • clinging to past views while avoiding new information • a belief that hindsight shows predictability • greater acceptance of views that align with personal ideals while dismissing those that don’t • taking credit for investment success while assigning blame for failure. One relevant example is recency bias, where recently-occurring events are emphasized in the memory more
prominently than past ones. For example, stock market performance was strong during the 80s and 90s, creating an excitement to invest with the potential of making money. Today, after a decade of investment struggles including Y2K, corporate scandals, multiple recessions and the 2008 global financial crisis, investment objectives have shifted from making money to avoiding loss. There are also many emotional biases. Examples include keeping an investment or portfolio we already own rather than changing it for a better opportunity, a strong desire to avoid loss rather than acquire gains, and avoiding making a decision to ensure we choose incorrectly. After all, hindsight is always 20/20. Institutional investors have a history of great success compared to regular investors because their processes and strategies eliminate human behavioural and emotional interference. When these cognitive and emotional biases, along with general fear and greed, are removed from the investment process, so is the negative impact on performance. There is no question that some of these tendencies likely sound familiar because they are part of being human. If you want to better understand how our emotions and behaviours impact investment savings, and learn the institutional investment strategies that may help you achieve greater peace of mind in your investment portfolio, call us today for a no-obligation review. In 1995, Saskatchewan introduced the Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP), dubbed at that time as “no-fault insurance.” This term refers only to the injury benefits and essentially means that whether or not you are responsible for an accident, everyone is entitled to the same injury benefits. As an example, if someone drives through a red light or fails to stop at a stop sign and collides with another vehicle, they will be liable for the damages and injuries that they cause to someone else. Planning for the future is something that we all do in countless areas of life. Yet, few people plan ahead for the end of their lives. Try as we may to avoid and distract ourselves with vacations, assets, family, and so on, the simple reality remains that some day, we all will die. When approached with the topic of pre-planning end-of-life issues, some may bristle, while others may have a false impression about what is being discussed. Some may feel that completing a will, setting aside funds in a bank account, or mentioning general preferences to a spouse, partner or family members for when they die is all that is necessary to make final arrangements. We have established a tried-and-true process for outlining the exact wishes you want carried out. Our goal is to reduce the number of times families have been unsure if they have made the right decisions. 56

Vehicles of the British Monarchy BY APOLLINE LUCYK
Which cars would you choose to be driven in if money was not an issue, and you represented the epitomĂŠ of class and sophistication for an entire nation? For the British Monarchy, the answer is a wide range of vehicles, including the glamorous labels of Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Bentley, Land Rover and the occasional Volkswagen.

founded in 1906, which has long been an icon of luxury and fine craftsmanship. Other Royal vehicles are crafted by Mercedes-Benz, a multinational division of the German manufacturer, Daimler AG, who specialize in luxury automobiles, buses, coaches and trucks, and are best summed up by their company slogan, “Das Beste oder nichts,” which translated into English means, “The best or nothing.” The Royal family also drives Land Rovers when in Scotland. According to Peter Pigott’s Royal Transport: An Inside Look at The History of British Royal Travel (2005), “the Queen is reportedly never so happy as when driving herself around in a Land Rover” (p.15). Land Rover is the second oldest four-wheel-drive car manufacturer, after Jeep. The celebrated British manufacturer is known for its wide variety of quality four-wheel-drive models, including the Defender and the Range Rover. The Queen’s two newest State cars are both from the legendary British manufacturer, Bentley. Bentley Motors Limited was founded in 1919 by W.O. Bentley, and is the direct successor of Rolls-Royce Motors. However, the Queen’s Bentleys are also quite different from traditional Bentleys. The Bentley State cars are nearly a metre longer than
a standard Bentley Arnage. Additionally, the rear doors are hinged at the back, and are specially designed so that the Queen can stand up straight before she steps out of the vehicle. To give the public a better view of the Royal family while they travel, the Bentleys both have a removable exterior roof lining covering a clear lining. The Royal family also travels in personal helicopters and airplanes, and one of the most intriguing is the Royal Train. The Royal Train is “the only private, noncommercial train service used by one family still in existence in the UK,” the Daily Mail notes. Further, the newspaper says that that the Royal Train has been “just as much a Royal residence as Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or Balmoral” for the past 150 years. The Royal Train is painted in the Royal Claret livery, a unique style distinguishing it from other trains. A number of carriages can be attached or unattached from the train, depending on who is travelling, and whether or not the journey is overnight. While State cars are designed to display the Royal family to the public, the Royal Train is a secluded place where they can relax in total privacy. Whatever the mode, the British “royal ride” is truly fit for a king, queen and their entourage.
Prince William drove his new bride in his father’s classic Aston Martin Volante. Given to Charles by the Queen as a 21st birthday present, the 1969 Aston Martin DB6 was converted to run on 100 per cent bioethanol fuel.

oving is considered to be one of the big stressors in life, and it is one which people have to deal with more frequently as they move for work or school. Therefore, it is smart to look for ways to make the process go as smoothly as possible. Following are some tips from Todd’s Moving to make your next move as stress-free as possible. Plan in advance. As soon as you know when and where you will be moving, it is a good idea to book a moving company. That way, you can ensure that you will have
top-quality, experienced movers, like Todd’s Moving, there to help with your move. Make packing easier. Using boxes of a standard size makes loading and unloading quicker and easier, thereby lowering your stress levels on both ends of the move. Such boxes are available to purchase from Todd’s Moving. They have packing materials for sale, as well. Todd’s Moving is also available to do your packing for you the day before you move. Having professionals do your packing not only frees you up to take care of other things
related to moving, but it also reduces the chance that items will break during the move due to improper packaging. If you would like Todd’s Moving to assist you with your packing, you will need to book in advance to ensure availability. Avoid potential headaches. You should always make sure that the moving company you hire carries insurance, in case any of your possessions are damaged en route. Todd’s Moving carries just such insurance.
