2014 Fall Season Must-Haves with Style Expert Regan Greenwood

1) LUX KNITS There is no such thing as too big or too intricate for fall knits. Always a staple, the almighty knit has a tailored silhouette this season and is signified by an elongated sleeve or pant. 2) SHEARLING Presented on vests, bomber jackets, collars, and even booties, shearling has proved to be the most essential of coldweather necessities. It’s a fashion must-have this season.

Regan Greenwood Style Expert Style Bar Boutique 470 River Ave, Winnipeg, MB Phone: 204.505.1351 stylebarwpg @stylebarwpg

3) WRAP COATS Boxy jackets were the rage for spring 2014. The trend continues with a longer version for colder fall temperatures. Throw an oversized wrap coat atop a multitude of layers, or go the streamlined route and pair it with slim-cut trousers and a thin turtleneck. 4) LEOPARD Much like plaid, this evergreen trend has showed up everywhere. What’s interesting though is the ultra-feminine take on it. Ladylike silhouettes breathe life into the perennial style. 5) GREY When black and white feel overdone, try the happy medium hue — grey. For everyday wear, add a jolt of cheeriness to the subdued shade with rich violets, vibrant greens, and bright yellows. 6) WIDE-EYES ROMANTICS You can find a more serious form for autumn with moody florals and intricate laces done up in darker shades. From intense blues to royalty-worthy violets, romance never goes out of style. 7) MIDISKIRTS Modesty is major for fall. Make the ladylike midiskist work for you by pairing it with a cropped top for fun or a long-sleeve knit for the office.

hairstyle has the ability to give a strong first impression of personality and sense of style. It also has the ability to make or break a special day. A “bad hair day” is not only a visual issue; it can also affect a person’s overall mood. Great hair, like any other part of the body, requires regular care and checkups. At Evoluir Salon, Marina Melo-Cabral and her expert team understand the importance of a great salon experience and dedicate themselves to making “great hair days” everyday of the week. After being a stylist for 16 years in other salons, Melo-Cabral poured her passion into her business and Evoluir Salon was born. Evoluir means “to evolve” in Portuguese — a theme that truly defines the business. Having her own business was not only Melo-Cabral’s dream, but her brother John’s as well. John was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer at just 15 and was granted a wish by Dream Factory. The charitable organization dedicates its days to making dreams come true for kids with life-threatening illnesses and has helped more than 500 families in Manitoba. The charity is close to Melo-Cabral’s heart not only for their help, but because it was a dream of John’s to help sick kids — a cause his sister has now taken on after his death. “I want to be able to pay them back for all they did for my brother and other sick kids in our community. What they do is truly amazing and I am proud to be a part of it anyway I can,” notes Melo-Cabral. For its grand opening, Evoluir Salon raised $14,000 through a cut-athon for the Dream Factory, an event that will be an annual celebration. The money from the event sent two kids to Disneyland to make memories for a lifetime. Children from the Dream Factory also received VIP treatment at the event. “As a salon we’re not here to just cut hair. We want to give back to the community; it’s truly important to us to make a difference,” remarks Melo-Cabral. The salon participates in a summer charity golf event to benefit other community groups. This year it was

Manitoba Mutts and Craig Street Cats that gained recognition from the inaugural event — a cause that was also close to John’s heart. Melo-Cabral’s mother, Anna, is the manager of the tight-knit salon, with many of the staff more like family after having worked together for more than a decade. This family owned and operated business creates a welcoming environment for all. The salon offers much more than expert cut and colour services; they also provide a spa experience with facials, manicures, pedicures and waxing services. Esthetics expert, Tatyana Larionova, treats clients to the very best products and services, such as Shellac and Vinylux, literally allowing them to put their best foot forward. Larionova is currently training in lash extension to be able to add the treatment to Evoluir Salon’s already vast menu of services. “We love being able to make someone happy and more confident; it not only brightens their day, but ours too. When people enter our salon, we want them to feel like family and allow the stress of the day to melt away,” says Melo-Cabral. Nestled in the heart of North Kildonan, the salon offers first-class services for both men and women, “Modern men are more in touch with their sense of style and understand the importance of being well groomed

for business and daily life,” notes MeloCabral. Those looking for a superb men’s cut might want to book men’s cut expert, Melissa Stamm, for a truly unique style. natural tone with sun-kissed tones. The exclusive brand is the only colour system the experts at the salon work with, ensuring the highest quality results from expert colourists Kristine Brooks, Ana Melo, Elda Cabral, Laura Miranda, Dina Scerbo, Gail Geekie and Ashely Person. qualities of Moroccan Oil products. As a Moroccan Oil Loyal Salon, Evoluir offers clients hair that is not just beautiful, but healthy as well. The experience at Evoluir Salon is not only relaxing and inviting, but also educational. The styling and up-do experts not only craft the perfect look for

a night on the town or a special event, but they also educate their clients about how to wear and style their new look. “A haircut or colour always looks great when you leave the salon, but not a lot of people understand how to maintain or style it themselves. We want to take the guess work out of looking great,” says MeloCabral. Though all the staff is great at their jobs Melo-Cabral, Vanessa Miranda, Lisa DelGrosso and Nikki Markowski take special delight in creating one-of-a-kind styles and up-dos for visitors to the salon. “We are full of talent and we truly love our jobs; making people happy is a gift everyday and we truly cherish it,” remarks Melo-Cabral. Every member of the salon team has been a driving force behind its success, and Melo-Cabral is truly grateful for all the support she has received making her brother’s dream come true. “I am humbled by the support I have received. Every day I get to do what I love and that’s something truly special,” notes Melo-Cabral. Whether you are looking for a modern new cut, some astounding colour, beachy waves or a spa experience, Evoluir Salon has that special look waiting for you. Fall Into Wellness By Brandi Parnell

“Holidays are enticing only for the first week or so. After that, it is no longer such a novelty to rise late and have little to do.” —Margaret Laurence

W

ith summer being such a short season on the prairies, Manitobans tend to make the most of each sunny day, which often means cramming as much into every hour as possible. Personally, I don’t turn a deck party down very often and I tend to stay up later than usual. With seasonal cocktails and picnic style foods aplenty, it’s easy to slip into a less disciplined state of mind. With a new school year and routine on the horizon, it’s time to let go of indulgence and reintroduce healthy habits. In fact, fall is the perfect time to clean up your life and start a new school year in balance. I sat down with Dr. Jason Bachewich from The Nature Doctors to come up with a list of five healthy habits you can incorporate into your life this fall. Sleep It is important to create routine in your life so your body knows what to expect. Ideally you want to go to bed and rise at roughly the same time each day. This is incredibly beneficial for your hormonal cycle. Ideal sleep is seven and a half to eight hours each night. If you have trouble falling asleep, sit quietly with yourself; listen to relaxing music or read a great Canadian novel. protein Start each morning with a healthy breakfast. Dr. Bachewich suggests to his patients that they “eat protein at breakfast or just eat breakfast, period. It is a simple thing that helps you make better decisions subconsciously throughout the day. Don’t jump on an insulin roller-coaster.” If you happened to save any sweet summer fruits in your deep freeze, haul them out and throw them in the blender with a handful of nuts, almond milk or coconut water along with some greens. I add kale and spinach to my smoothies and often hemp hearts. Quality breakfasts can be just as easy as a bowl of cereal. Mindful eating Drinking liquids with meals slows down your body’s ability to digest your food. Chew your food slowly in order to ingest less air; you’ll feel less bloated and more satiated. It goes back to your first meal of the day. Make your food choices mindful ones.

Move “We often spend a ton of time thinking of our children’s schedules. Make yourself a priority and choose a fun activity as a form of exercise. Quality is more important than quantity. “ Dr. Bachewich suggests a walk once a week with a friend, swim laps, play recreational hockey, do Pilates, dance — just move.

an appreciation for that day,” suggests Bachewich. “These are the years you don’t get back.”

“You’re more likely to die earlier at a young age from chronic stress than you are from chronic cigarette smoking,” says Bachewich. The truth is that life can be very fast paced. We live in a world where we have a ton of information coming at us from all angles all day long. Extreme living is not healthy and neither is a cluttered mind.

Meditate for five minutes in the morning. Start your day with a mantra. Be grateful and remind yourself that today is a gift.

think Well Mental well-being is as important as sleep, our food choices and physical activity. “It’s important to avoid the extremes — whatever they may be. Try starting each day this fall with

Time is a precious commodity. While it is important to make the most of each day, it is essential to do so in a balanced manner.

As the sun sets on a coveted season, think about the best possible approach to what tends to be long months. Sometimes we need to rephrase our perspective and slow down over a fall supper with loved ones. Too much of anything can lead to burnout. ALTHOUGH YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED, WINNIPEG HOSTS A LARGE AND EDGY SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY. SINCE THE 1980S, WESTERN PERSPECTIVES TOWARD ALTERNATIVE SPIRITUALITY AND HEALING MODALITIES HAVE SHIFTED SIGNIFICANTLY. OUR FAIR CITY IS NOW BURSTING WITH SPIRITUAL EVENTS, HEALERS, MEDIUMS AND TAROT READERS. EVEN OUR LEGISLATIVE BUILDING IS PART OF THIS BLOSSOMING ENERGY, A RECREATION OF THE TEMPLE OF SOLOMON. At the heart of it all, Radiance Gifts has been lighting up the Winnipeg metaphysical scene for the last 20 years, offering experienced advice from well-qualified staff, as well as courses, resources and tools for both empowerment and healing. Our quest is to offer you a taste of our spiritual pioneering energy, with a glimpse into the sacred ground of the senses.

SENSE OF SIGHT

Aromatherapy is an alternative therapy utilizing plants and resins to positively alter a person’s physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual health. Modalities can range from topical uses such as skin care, massage, in the bath or shower, compresses and direct inhalation or aerial diffusion for setting a mood. Depending on the fragrance, you can enhance a positive state of mind, improve respiratory healing or clear a room of negative energy.

Crystals and gems have been used as adornment and for spiritual purposes for thousands of years. Crystals, like the human body, emit energy and are known for their piezoelectric effects (electricity resulting from pressure) in computers, radio transmitters and watches for decades. This energy can enhance personal development in areas of love, abundance, manifestation or protection. Gemstones are directly connected to a body system known as the “chakra system.

Colour energy is a concept connected to the chakra system, as each one relates to a specific color. When we are feeling lost, overwhelmed, tired or ill, we can utilize the colours that relate to the chakric energy points in our bodies to rejuvenate and restore ourselves to wholeness through herbs, stones or sound.

SENSE OF HEARING Sound therapy is a healing modality that utilizes the power of frequency and vibration for total health and wellness by stimulating the auditory pathways to the brain. This is accomplished through toning, chanting and musical instruments such as crystal bowls, tingshas or tuning forks. Sound therapy is particularly beneficial for stress, fatigue and physical aches and pains.

The word chakra means wheel or vortex, and can be traced as far back as 2000 BCE in such spiritual texts as the Vedas. Chakras are understood to be energy points relating to the life force in the human body. Used by healing practitioners and lay people alike, crystals are placed on the body points for healing and balance.

At Radiance, we offer a cornucopia of tools from colour energy sprays and oils to sound healing tools and gems that will soothe your body and mind and uplift your soul. Come adventuring with us at 7-875 Corydon Avenue, seven days a week and experience our community.

n keeping with the clinic’s holistic approach to health care, mindful selection was taken when choosing a location that would enhance the overall feeling of well-being for both patients and staff alike. The Maltese Cross Building, a seven-storey heritage building

built in 1909, was chosen for its spacious feel, high ceilings, the natural lighting from its large windows and the sense of stability imparted by its historic character. The use of both rustic and contemporary elements, from wood to exposed brick, create a relaxed, tranquil atmosphere.

Clinic-1’s main doctor and founder is Dr. Meer Janjua, MD, a secondgeneration physician whose training at several universities both in Canada and abroad exposed him to a plethora of cultural traditions and alternative forms of medicine. Dr. Janjua realized ABOVE Clinic-1 team

that an optimal environment, as well as patient interaction and education about individual history and treatment options are keys to improving health. Clinic-1 offers both a walk-in service and a family practice. Dr. Janjua’s main interest, however, is in regenerative medicine and minor surgeries, which he practices regularly in the clinic. Regenerative therapies encompass stem cell injections — specifically, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) — for the treatment of various musculoskeletal disorders as an alternative to traditional methods. PRP is used to initiate and accelerate the body’s natural healing processes. PRP is harvested in the clinic from the patient’s own blood and injected back into the area of concern using ultrasound guidance for proper placement. PRP can be used to treat many conditions, including muscular tears, injuries to the tendons and ligaments, golfer’s and tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis and more.

Follow-up visits are included in the cost of the treatment. PRP and autologous stem cell treatments are being used globally and are gaining popularity as a non-drug and non-surgical alternatives. Please refer to www.prp.org for more information.

A 2010 graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Brown uses clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, acupuncture and lifestyle counseling to enhance patients’ quality of life, health and wellness. She also does blood work, allergy testing and hormone analysis for diagnosis.

The team at Clinic-1 works hard to provide an efficient, warm, inviting and stressfree atmosphere. Clinic-1 believes in your health and asks you to do the same. If you are looking for a medical facility that is different from your usual experience, give them a try.

occasionally get in there, so it’s important to keep them clean. Even high-oxygen lenses have their issues and it’s good to let your corneas breathe from time to time (while you clean).

When it comes to contacts, I would like to say I’ve seen it all. About 10 years ago two ridiculous things happened:

Do rub your contacts to clean them. There are plenty of advertised “no rub” cleaners out there; when you read the fine print though, you are actually supposed to spray a stream of cleaning solution for 10 seconds each side which means you go through more of their product, and it is simply not an effective cleaning method.

First, we had a rash of infections from younger contact lens wearers. After some investigating, it turns out that they were soaking their contacts in Kool-Aid to create coloured contacts! This is a very bad plan. Second, we had a group of local teens come back from Mexico with eye infections. At first I expected it was the water, but it turns out that they had decided to try swapping contacts without cleaning them! This is an even worse plan (like wearing another person’s worn underwear). While those two examples are pretty dramatic, they really did happen. Here are some more ordinary scenarios to consider:

here have always been issues regarding the safe usage of contact lenses. Let’s face it, you put on a pair of glasses, you take them off; you clean them if you feel like it, but there’s rarely a problem associated with them.

24

become even more complicated since the new high-oxygen contacts hit the market with manufacturer claims that you can wear them for up to 30 days continuously.

WINNIPEG

Don’t sleep in your contacts. Technically, you can, but that doesn’t mean you should. If you forget to take them out when you go to sleep, don’t worry – clean upon rising. Don’t forget to clean them. Soft contacts are like suction cups stuck to your eyeballs. Infectious agents can

Rub your contacts gently on each side with cleaning solution, then rinse them with the solution once again. Don’t wear your contacts if anything unusual is happening with your eyes. If you’ve got red eyes, discomfort, itchy eyes, or anything out of the ordinary, forget the contacts and see your optometrist. Eye infections can get serious fast. If infections get a foothold, they can cause corneal ulcers and lead to permanent vision loss in extreme cases. Contacts can be very convenient for people who don’t like to wear glasses, but they must still be used wisely. Follow all the instructions, have a pair of glasses for emergencies and get professional advice if anything seems out of the ordinary. We are born with only two eyes, it is important to take care of them.

Sound familiar? You could be suffering from adrenal fatigue.

which leads to weight gain, fatigue, bloating and chronic pain.

hat is adrenal fatigue? Another term can be “modern lifestyle syndrome.” In today’s society, we burn the candle at both ends. We try to exercise, eat right, be a good partner, excel in our career, have a social life, be good parents, have a clean house, wear the right clothes and drive the right car. The problem is, we forget how to relax. Watching the latest HBO series or the hockey playoffs does not result in a decrease in heart rate and adrenalin. Our definition of down time or relaxation is in itself flawed. Adrenal Fatigue is being tired because we are always pushing beyond the body’s ability to cope.

I have been suffering with these symptoms for years and my medical doctor keeps telling me everything looks normal on my blood work. How can this be? All blood work is based on bell curves/ranges. When you get close to each end of the bell curve, you may be symptomatic, but not sick enough to be labeled diseased, or in the danger zone on blood work. Your naturopathic doctor will often request blood work to help determine if your thyroid, blood sugar, immune system, vitamin levels or sex/stress hormones levels are less than optimal.

W

What causes adrenal fatigue? Prolonged stress — and remember stress can by physical, emotional, psychological or environmental. And Stress is cumulative. The human body cannot distinguish between happy stress and unhappy stress. Adrenaline is adrenaline, whether you are cheering on your favourite team or giving a presentation to the boss. Prolonged stress leads to chronic elevated cortisol levels impairing insulin sensitivity,

How do you treat adrenal fatigue? Each patient experiences adrenal fatigue differently, so your naturopathic doctor will tailor an individual plan based on your case. Your plan might include lifestyle changes such as a sleep hygiene program, dietary changes, supplements (vitamins, minerals and herbs), physical medicine such as acupuncture, intravenous vitamins or massage therapy, and counseling. Your plan may include only one of the above, or several. Every suggestion is presented to the client so the client can make an informed decision

about their journey to wellbeing!

Do I have to make drastic changes to my diet and lifestyle? No. Naturopathic doctors are people too and realize the challenges of modern life. We work with you to determine manageable goals to achieve success. It is not about propping you up until you can get knocked down again, but rather teaching you the skills to deal with a busy life so you can be more resilient.

How long are the appointments? The first appointment is one and a half hours for an adult, which includes a thorough health history and physical exam. After that, most appointments are 30 to 45 minutes, with frequency of visits anywhere from one to four months, depending on how much an individual needs. The journey begins with the first visit, and continues with all the choices you make as you learn how to look after your body.

The

Diamond Duo:

Shannon Tweed and Daughter Sophie Shine in New Reality TV Series

By Heather Fritz Photos Heather Fritz and Austin Young

W

hen the A&E reality show Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels premiered in 2006, fans began a voyeuristic love affair that lasted seven seasons. We laughed, cried, gasped, raised our eyebrows and shook our heads in disbelief as KISS rock legend Gene Simmons, actress and former Playboy model Shannon Tweed and their two children, Nick and Sophie, bared their all for our reality viewing pleasure. The show ended in 2012, but fans can now get their Tweed-Simmons reality kick as the ‘diamond duo’ of the famous family star in their own show, aptly called Shannon & Sophie.

Fans watched little Sophie grow up in the front of the camera; now that she is entering a more independent period of life, she and her mother thought bringing the old Family Jewels fans along for the ride might be fun.

attended college and stepped out of her parents’ shadow with a short run on the TV music competition series The X Factor. Her Surrey-based charity, Sophie’s Place, is part of an outreach centre treating nearly 4,000 abused children a year.

“It seemed like a natural continuation,” Shannon says at home in the TweedSimmons mansion. “We ended Family Jewels kind of abruptly so there are a lot of fans sort of wondering what we’re all doing now.”

When Sophie wondered out loud about a show that focused on the motherdaughter pair, Shannon pitched it to Force Four Entertainment. Eight episodes were produced and the show premiered in May on the W Network.

What are they doing now? To say they’ve been busy is an understatement. Gene tours with KISS and is heavily involved in production and charity work. He has also recently taken on the rapidly expanding network of ‘family-friendly rock ‘n roll experience’ restaurants called Rock and Brews — the first Canadian location is coming soon to Shannon’s hometown of Saskatoon. Shannon’s doing voice over and television work, has a hand in The Smartest Person in Canada game show and works with the Canadian Cancer Society. Nick finished college with a degree in English and World Literature, is a writer, voice over actor and musician. Sophie

“I think there is a lot of reality TV out there that focuses on the drama and fighting; I thought maybe people would just like to see a mom and daughter being happy and enjoying life,” says Sophie. “I honestly don’t know a lot of mothers and daughters who are as close as my mom and I.” Shannon & Sophie is billed as a reality show, and for the most part, that’s true. “Of course we know we’re being filmed,” she adds. “So we’re very conscious that whatever we’re doing is permanent. If something happens, we just deal with it, get over it and go on with life. It’s a reality show, but it’s our life,” she says.

“Eventually, your children grow up and become smarter than you. I don’t know how that happens! The beauty of getting older is that stuff doesn’t bother you. You just want your children to flourish and grow. I’m just glad to be a part of that.” For her part, Sophie is nonplussed about wading into another reality show with all the television cameras intruding in a good portion of her life. “I grew up in the entertainment industry, so having cameras around is normal for me,” she shrugs. “Yeah, it’s kind of annoying they film everything but it’s nice to have those home movies we can look back on.” It’s clear Shannon admires and respects the woman her daughter has become, perhaps with tougher skin than she had at that age. “For Sophie, maybe it was good to get that public humiliation out of the way early,” Shannon laughs. “I mean having parents like us, having your baby pictures and your awkward growth phase up there for everyone to see. She’s stronger than I thought she was and can handle more pressure than I probably could have at that age,” she says. “When I made mistakes when I was 24, they were private. Now you do anything and the world sees it and judges you.” Shannon interjects, “We might not chew with our mouths open, but what you see is really what you get!” Best friends mom and daughter have “always hung out a lot” but as Sophie is growing up and away, Shannon sees a bit of a role reversal. “Now without the boys in it, I’ve become the idiot and she’s the smart one,” Shannon laughs. “Before, Gene was the idiot and the rest of us were smart! The juxtaposition is completely reversed and now I’m getting a taste of what he went through.” She’s philosophical about parenting children who are adults themselves.

As the producers wait for the show to be picked up in the U.S. and Canadian markets, Shannon and Sophie are happy to be sharing authentic lives with new and old fans. “I’m not interested in mothers and daughters who don’t get along. I think we see enough of that on TV, and we see enough fake interactions,” Shannon says, and suddenly studies her daughter closely. “Hey, you’re wearing my pants!” she says. “Yeah? Well, you’re wearing my shoes,” Sophie replies without missing a beat.

WINE NOT

To Blend or Not to Blend By Sean Dolenuck, Sommelier La Boutique del Vino

A

s the summer fades into the fall nights and our holidays ‘wine’ down, as we head back to routine and the weekend dinners we give thanks for, the question becomes do we bring the Napa Valley Cabernet to dinner or the GSM (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre) blend from Australia? Does your wine personality move you toward single varietal wine, or does your adventurous side scream out for a diversity of flavours? Blending shows both our creative and experimental sides — making life more interesting. Single varietal wines best represent the “true” qualities of a grape and the region in which they are grown. Every grape has a specific signature. Depending on our wine personality, we can easily sway to the expression of that grape. I find certain magic and romance with a Burgundian Pinot Noir, yet I can easily fall in love with a super Tuscan blend in the same night. Blending is a very old practice; many of the finest wines made in the world today are a result of blending. So why do we blend wines? Many

varietals are blended together to complement their attributes, whether it’s lifting aromatics, softening tannins, or adding acidity or sugar. Blending can also help the structure or body of the wine. Because grapes ripen at different times blending is used as an insurance policy. This would allow a sustained vintage in the event of bad weather or crop disease. This would allow a sustained vintage in the event of bad weather or crop disease. Blending also has the ability to ensure a reliable product year in and year out. Champagne is a classic example of blending not just grapes, but also vintages. The house style is a masterpiece composed skillfully by the head winemaker to ensure a consistent brand. The most creative, complicated and age worthy wines belong to the field blends in Portugal where fortified and still wines are made. A field blend is a variety of different vines grown together that are

harvested and usually co-fermented. In California field blends, Syrah and Petit Syrah are common to make very fruit forward and structured wines. Australia has marketed their trend of blend from French regions that do not label their wines with grape varietals and consumers may not know the blend involved. Aussie wines that have trended the French regions include GSM (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre) from Chateauneuf du Pape in Southern Rhone, Shiraz and Viognier blends from Cotie Rotie in Northern Rhone, and Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc from Graves in Bordeaux.

backed with an edgy acidic finish. Great with seafood! Two Hands Brave Faces (Grenache/ Shiraz/Mourvedre ) - Barossa, Australia $34.99 Buoyant raspberry, red cherry characters with a restrained savory palate, grainy tannins backed by integrated oak. Extremely well balanced and pairs great with roasted meats.

Be sure to visit La Boutique del Vino, Winnipeg’s best wine store where you will find many excellent blends such as:

Colaneri Corposo: (Cabernet Franc/ Merlot/Syrah) - Niagara, Ontario $28.99. One of Canada’s most innovative wineries blends traditional Italian winemaking techniques. Layers of raspberry and wild strawberry mixed elegantly with rosemary and cedar, finished with smoked brown spices. Bring on the lamb!

Domaine de le Grachies (Colombard/ Ugni Blanc/Gros Mensang/Sauvignon) Cote de Gascogne France $13.99. Crisp fresh citrus notes with peach and apple

escribed as a human right’s tale by its designer, the Canadian Human Rights Museum (CHRM) opens this fall with a weekend-long celebration throughout The Forks. “The opening of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is reason for national celebration, and the invitation to join in the weekend of festivities is open to all,” said CMHR president and CEO Stuart Murray at a media event held at the museum to announce the inaugural weekend program. The CHRM officially opens its doors Sept. 27. The pre-opening celebration, RightsFest, begins on Saturday, Sept. 20. This celebration will offer something for people of all ages and backgrounds. From an open-air Canadian Concert for Human Rights starring nationally renowned musicians, to daytime activities and programs that explore and celebrate the rights and responsibilities Canadians share. “It’s an opportunity for the public to celebrate with us,” says media relations manager Maureen Fitzhenry.” Opening weekend will include free guided tours of selected gallery spaces in the museum as well. The free Canadian Concert for Human Rights on Saturday will be broadcasted live by the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) for families across Canada. The line-up includes internationally renowned Canadian folk legend Bruce Cockburn, Juno awardwinning First Nations electronic artists A Tribe Called Red, Independent Music Award-winning chanteuse Marie-Pierre Arthur, Juno Award-winning hip-hop artist Shad, multiple Juno Award-winning fiddler Ashley MacIsaac and globally celebrated singer-songwriter, Buffy Sainte-Marie. CHRM began as a dream for Canwest founder Izzy Asper who envisioned a place where students from across Canada and the world could visit and learn about human rights. Asper launched CMHR in 2003 and after his death that same year, his daughter, Gail Asper, continued those aspirations by campaigning and fundraising for the museum. In 2008, the Government of Canada recognized Izzy Asper’s private initiative as a national museum — the first one outside of Ottawa to be given that honour.

Construction for world-renowned architect Antoine Predock’s design for CHRM began in 2009 and he borrowed images from the Canadian landscape including mountains, clouds, prairie grass, ice and snow. Christopher Hume, from The Star, describes the museum “as an arrangement of very few elements, but each large and striking. At the centre is the Tower of Hope, a 30-storey spire that acts as the armature on which the bulk of the complex rests. It supports a huge glass shape, The Cloud, which contains many of the galleries and public spaces. Beneath that is a series of ramps, Pharaohonic in scale, that lead into the museum.” As Predock explains, “I always speak of it as roots clutching at the earth. So often, oppressed people are earth-connected. The Earth is our anchoring possibility. From there, you go up into the sky.” The museum’s four stone ‘Roots’ represent all humans as children of the

Earth — a reflection of the museum’s dedication to human rights education for all. The museum also includes an outdoor amphitheatre, classrooms, restaurant, retail, ticketing and space for a future theatre and temporary gallery. Furthermore, the museum will boast dynamic, interactive exhibits presented by master exhibit designer Ralph Appelbaum Associates, and arranged around human right themes using multimedia technology and stunning visuals. There will be 11 galleries showcasing human rights stories from multiple perspectives, and exhibits will include more than 100 hours of video; four feature films; an immersive multimedia experience; 26 small format films; 37 large scale linear media projections; 512 video clips; more than 250 artifacts and works of art; 2,543 images; two soundscapes; 18 mixed-media story niches; 19 digital interactive elements;

100,000 words of original text; and seven theatres as well as 10 originally commissioned pieces. The exhibits will also be fully bilingual for Anglophone’s and Francophone’s. “We really want the whole city involved,” says Fitzhenry, adding that it’s not just about the opening festivities, but human rights education as well. “It’s very exciting to be the first new national museum in Canada. We want it to be a cultural institution.” The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Mondays beginning Sept. 27. Adult admission will be $15, youth (7 to 17) will be $8 and students and seniors will be $12. Kids under 7 may visit for free. For the opening weekend, free tickets will be limited for the museum and will go quickly. Visit museumforhumanrights.ca for more information and to reserve yours.

f you live in Winnipeg, you know the De Luca name. In fact, if you run into someone who introduces him or herself as a De Luca, you may find yourself striking up a conversation about tortellini or tiramisu. Once a small family business, today the De Luca name is synonymous with fine cuts of meat, a vast array of premium olive oils, savoury sauces and of course, wine. Still family run, De Luca’s is far more expansive and quite frankly, sophisticated than it was more than four decades ago. In fact, it may seem as though the operation runs with ease in the recently renovated, original location at 950 Portage Ave. It’s beautiful and it has a tasting bar and fine foods from all around the world;

mezzanine where they serve a daily hot lunch. Perhaps you’ve taken a cooking class or had them cater any imaginable function with menus items ranging from antipasto trays to mouthwatering manicotti. They operate a cooking studio, which can be booked for private functions including small wedding receptions, birthdays and corporate events. Years ago, ‘the brothers’ operated a wholesale division out of the basement on conveyor belts where young De Luca family members could be found learning the basics of commerce. Today, their wholesale business is renowned for more than Italian specialty products. In fact, the De Luca family has dinner covered from start to finish with sourced and roasted gourmet coffee and a full line of espresso machines, which they service in-house.

What remains the same are the founding principles: respect, humility and hard work.

but the truth is that a lot of hard work continues to feed the family business. From its inception in 1968, the business began as a restaurant serving quality food reminiscent of mamma’s recipes. However, demand met culture, and quickly drove the expansion of a grocery store. Back then, no job was too big or small and the evolution into the business was from cleaning floors to serving customers. Today the De Luca brothers, Frank, Pasquale, Peter and Tony — along with some of their children — still heed their nonno’s advice, “Make Italy wherever you go and you won’t regret it.” Italy to the De Luca family means warm hospitality, a firm handshake and a mouthwatering meal. It is honouring

traditional while keeping their sights on new trends. Making Italy wherever you go means offering the best cured meats, old world wines and a gamut of cheeses. Cutting edge Because the business has always been customer-driven, they are continually importing new items and offering unique options for people with dietary restrictions. Whether you live in the area or drive across the city for must-have ingredients, this charming hospitable place to shop is a destination for area locals and foodies alike. The De Luca family has grown to include a new generation of born and bred Italians with sophisticated palettes for great food. Although they would classify their business mostly as a specialty grocery store, you may know them for their multifaceted

Humble “Winnipeg is a tightknit community. We try to treat everyone fairly — like family. That’s what keeps them coming back,” says Marco De Luca, who oversees the wholesale division of the business. Known for their earnest approach to business along with quality gourmet foods, the De Luca family proudly supports local products and farms. They use Manitoba pork and have sold fresh herbs long before it was popular to do so. The reasons Winnipegers continue to support De Luca’s are endless. Whether you’re stopping in to pick up fresh ingredients for homemade pizza on Friday night or you’ve booked the cooking studio for a baptism, you’ll be treated like family. Whether you’re picking up freshly made pasta, a hot meal to go, or scrumptious cuts of meat for the grill, they’ve got you covered. Decedent chocolate, freshly baked bread or a bottle of red, they have that too. Now more than 100 members, the De Luca family still gets together in one home where they feast, drink wine and honour tradition. And being able to help her clients furnish the home of their dreams while also being the place they stop on the way to a dinner party to pick up the perfect hostess gift is precisely what she wanted to do when she created These Four Walls, DeLuca expresses. “When customers express that they enjoy coming into the store, or that it is a place they come to find unique items for their home, it’s really great to hear,” she says. “There really isn’t anywhere else in the city like this.” These Four Walls 167 Stafford Street Winnipeg 204.452.5786 thesefourwalls@shaw.ca | www.thesefourwalls.ca |

I

t’s one of Winnipeg’s much missed, but also elusive, sunny days and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are practicing at the Investors Group Field, preparing for their first game against the Edmonton Eskimos. Laughter erupts from the field as some players stand in a circle tossing the football, trying not to let it touch the sports turf. It’s a relatively low-key practice; the players appear relaxed and confident as Head Coach Mike O’Shea goes over plays with some of the team. It’s an apt reprieve after 2013’s dismal season, and the Bombers’ comeback is already in full swing. This season the Bombers will face their biggest competitor on the Western side: the Eskimos, who, like the Bombers, began the season 3-0.

For January, a Grey Cup win is about character. “I think that the group we got right now is an extremely good group,” he says. “And they’re also willing to do whatever it takes to get the win.” “It’s exciting to start the season with both of us undefeated,” says Bombers player Nick Moore (slotback). Moore signed with the Bombers at the opening of the 2014 season. “But at the end of the day, the first three games don’t matter.” All that matters is in the end The Bombers win when it counts. Moore recommends hitting them out on the first play. “We have to match [the Eskimos’] intensity,” he says. “They have a veteran group on the defensive end — and they’re just animals.” This season, the Bombers increased their own veteran presence on the roster — adding receiver Romby Bryant to the team after he was let go by the Toronto Argonauts. Bryant debuted with the Bombers in 2008 and made

a career record with 206 yards before he was traded to Calgary in 2009. An injury stopped Bryant from playing much of 2013 with Argonauts; he says he’s grateful for the second chance to play with the Bombers. “I didn’t really know whether people were going to take a chance on me with my age and with Toronto just letting me go out of the blue, you know; maybe people thought I couldn’t play any more,” Bryant told Global News after a Tuesday practice. However, O’Shea, who joined as head coach in December 2013, appears to have no qualms regarding Bryant’s talent, telling reporters, “He’s still got a ton of speed.” O’Shea is a former Canadian football linebacker and a former special team coordinator for the Argonauts. He was also the recipient of the Canadian Football League’s Most Outstanding Canadian Award in 1999 after recording

84 tackles, 13 special team tackles and three interceptions that same year. “When Coach O’Shea steps in the room, after being a hall of famer — you listen,” says Glen January, who became a Bomber in 2009. “I’m not worried about having a fatigued mind. Once we step off the field, Coach O’Shea makes sure we’re not going to be tired.” “Mike’s a funny guy,” adds Moore about his coach. “And he’s like that in the huddle. But he’s also about making sure we’re paying attention to detail and making sure people are doing the right thing on the field.” O’Shea is also one of the reasons wide receiver Julian Feoli-Gudino, who scored a last-minute winning touchdown during the Montreal Alouettes’ game, decided to join the Bombers. “I wanted an opportunity to play, and I knew Mike before; he was the one to give

me that opportunity,” says Feoli-Gudino. Feoli-Gudino says it felt satisfying to score the winning touchdown in Montreal because it was where he grew up playing football. “It was a great feeling because it was also in front of my friends and family.” Feoli-Gudino played for the Argonauts, and became a free agent in January 2014 before joining the Bombers. He was previously a five-year starter at the University of Laval, where he played on the Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions. O’Shea, as a player, was a three-time Grey Cup champion with the Argonauts in 1996, 1997 and 2004 — and a Grey Cup win for the Bombers would be the ultimate comeback for both the team and its fans. For Feoli-Gudino, while a Grey Cup title would be nice, he says he wants to stay in the present and focus on the next game. “We’re working for the Cup, but we love to do what we’re doing.”

all is the perfect time to wipe clean your home. Forced air conditioners or open windows can often leave rooms feeling stale or dusty. A new season, like an internal cleanse, is the best time to reset your home. Here are five tips from the professionals to clean your home as you hunker down for a cosy season. STRAIGHTEN AND DE-CLUTTER YOUR CLOSETS. Pack away your shorts and tank tops as you make room for shaker sweaters and long pants. While you’re packing away and pulling out, be sure to purge items you no longer use. REPLACE YOUR FURNACE FILTER. Your furnace is the central air filter for your home. Warm breezy days may have brought in extra debris. Start a new season with clean, pure air. WIPE HIDDEN SURFACES. With a new furnace filter, it seems appropriate to dust all ceiling fans and light fixtures to

allow air to move freely over clean, dust free surfaces. CLEAN OUT YOUR FRIDGE. Summer is a saucy season. Rid your shelves of extra dressings and sauces to make room for comforting casseroles. While you’re at it, wipe down the shelves and drawers. I recommend a fresh box of baking soda monthly to eliminate odours. LASTLY, STRIP AND SANITIZE BEDS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. Be weary of cleaning instructions, dry clean if necessary. Be sure to include pillow shams and skirts. I recommend invigorating fresh linens with seasonally scented dryer balls or organic scented dryer sheets. Fall is the perfect time to fall into a clean home. A HOME LIBRARY that Works for YOU A written history has been part of our culture for thousands of years.

A

By Trina Annand

fter the invention of the Gutenberg Printing Press in the 1400s made mass production of books possible, people have amassed large collections of them. There was a time when a home library was a necessity, it not only displayed a person’s knowledge, but also spoke of their thirst for experience. With the advent of the minimalistic lifestyle and eBooks, you may wonder if the home library has become less popular, but according to Fran Underwood, senior interior designer at Underwood and Moore, the home library is enjoying a rebirth in the modern home. Stemming from the mentality of everything in its place, the modern home library is the ultimate storage solution and décor statement at the same time. Underwood says she has seen a rise in the number of clients looking for home libraries. “People are still looking for ways to keep books. The home library has been downsized just like every other room. My clients are struggling to find ways to accommodate what they want to keep; they have attached a lot of memories to items they have collected. A bookshelf is not just a place to store books anymore,” remarks Underwood. Decorative accessories, mementos and photo

albums have all made their way into the modern library. Homeowners looking for a dramatic statement can create a full floor-to-ceiling wall of books, removing the need for a dedicated library room. “Books from the past tell us something about where we’ve been, contemporary books tell us who we are now,” says Marlo MacKay, communications coordinator for Dalhousie Libraries. “In the future, our books will give people the impression of what it was like to live in this time. Traditional books still very much have their place. I can’t get an author to sign my eReader.” Electronic readers do have their place; after all, it would be physically impossible for someone to carry around hundreds or even thousands of books. Unlike physical books, eReaders lack a multi-sensory experience; you cannot sit down with a digital device, feel the paper between your fingers, smell the age of the book and read annotations made in pencil by previous generations of readers. When a library is created in a family home it serves an important function, it brings a family together. Without having each person’s books scattered around the house, interaction happens, creating a reading space in this busy world of after school activities and texting is

FineLifestyles

WINNIPEG

fundamental. “Each book is like a friend because I’ve connected with it on a deep level. I think for people who have children in their home it’s especially important to have books around. When I was a child we always had books and I know that fostered a love of reading,” says MacKay. “The more kids we can get to fall in love with reading, the lower illiteracy rates will be.” Reading with children is not only a way to make time for family, but an educational process ensuring a great future for a child. Now bookcases come in all shapes and sizes, and a variety of materials, wood, glass, metal, plastic, the possibilities are limitless. For those without a vast collection of books, there are minimalistic options that hang on a wall, invisibly giving the sense of books that are

48

FineLifestyles

WINNIPEG

hovering, another bookcase creates the illusion that books are simply stacked on one another until they touch the sky. Today’s modern aesthetics are as much about the beauty of the stored items as the storage solutions themselves. Rather than organizing books in traditional alphabetical format, a rainbow of colour can be created by pairing colours together, creating a design statement. If hiding books is the order of the day, simple or ornate doors can hide the visual clutter and present a blank wall to the eye. “Regardless of the size of your space, you can create a storage solution for books. You need to make use of every available corner; a lot of people don’t think to use the full height of rooms. Books often pass from generation to generation and they tend to pile up. The key to incorporating a library into a home is to pick the books

you love and make a home for them,” says Underwood. No matter what a person’s personal style is, or the space in a home, there is always room for a good book. “My home library tells a story. Upon seeing my bookcase you might be able to guess what I was like, if you had never met me. It is important to keep the books that have touched you in some way, books that make you laugh, cry and have changed you. And most importantly, books that are connected to memories and people,” notes MacKay. A home library is far more than a way to organize a home, it is a way to make and share memories, the perfect space to spend a rainy day. Give it a chance, and it can become the heart of a home.

e all work hard for our money; that’s something everyone has in common. Because we strive to achieve a certain standard of living, we become emotionally attached to what happens with what we’ve endeavoured to acquire. Sometimes it’s hard to know who to trust with your money. Many people have been misled by financial advisors who often represent themselves as having the ability to predict and control things which are unpredictable and not within their control. As a result, this could lead people to be hesitant in choosing a financial advisor to rely on. Harbourfront Wealth Management is an independent financial advisory firm that specializes in providing comprehensive financial advice to further grow and develop the wealth you’ve worked so hard to accumulate. “It’s a big responsibility”, comments Kelly Hemmett, certified financial planner and partner with Harbourfront Wealth Management. “If you sell someone an investment, it might wreck a year of their life, but if you mess up on their financial plan, you could ruin their entire life after retirement. We adhere to a disciplined approach to wealth management so our clients can feel confident as they enter each segment of their lives.”

Client Services That are Second to None Kevin Anseeuw, investment advisor and partner, points out that an entire team of experts are at your disposal when you have Harbourfront Wealth Management working for you. Each team member is highly qualified and specializes in various aspects of wealth management. At the Winnipeg branch, advisors hold many designations, including Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Canadian Investment Management (CIM). Clients can utilize the resources of the entire team, which has over 150 years of combined experience. The team members have extensive experience working with managed money, stocks, bonds, flow-through shares and more. “We know that it is not simply the accumulation of money, but rather planning and accomplishing our clients’ goals and dreams that makes us invaluable,” says Hemmett. “Our focus therefore is not simply on the accumulation of wealth, but in creating a plan for our clients to achieve what they value most in life.”

WEALTH MANAGMENT

GIVING YOU DIRECTION TO FINANCIAL

PEACE OF MIND Simplifying your Choices According to Anseeuw, clients can find managing their wealth to be a very complex and overwhelming ordeal. “When you consider all the elements we review with clients, such as tax minimization, trust and estate planning, business succession planning, and back-tested portfolio analysis, it can be difficult to understand how all these components tie together and whether they are actually complementing one another. We strive to make the financial decision making process for clients as clear as possible,” says Anseeuw. With so much information and so many options available, the paradox of choice occurs when so much choice becomes no choice at all. “We work with clients to narrow down the best strategy for them so they can make informed decisions, we then strive to keep them on track,” he adds. At the start of their process an in-depth client discovery is conducted to analyze the client’s needs and goals, the resources they have available and their overall comfort level. A risk assessment is a useful tool to assist in assessing the comfort level of the client. Hemmett Anseeuw & Associates always puts their proposals and solutions in writing for their client’s reference and are always available to answer

questions and explain what’s happening with your money as you move through their seven step process.

Beware of Emotional Investing You may consider managing your own portfolio, but this can be risky. When we are emotionally attached to something, our objective decision making can suffer. It is best to trust the financial experts who have the training and expertise. They can weigh the risks and look at market fluctuations in an informed, educated manner before giving you the professional advice you’re looking for. Hannah Giesbrecht, Portfolio Manager at Harbourfront Wealth Management and 27 year industry veteran says that “Through the bear market 2001-2 and the crash 2008, our investment style had become decidedly fixed income-oriented, so as to reduce portfolio risk in volatile environments. Since then, our style has evolved with the market to include ETFs, options and individual stocks for those clients with the risk tolerance for them.” As Portfolio Managers at Harbourfront Wealth Management, Hannah Giesbrecht and Jennifer Snyder manage clients’ portfolios on a discretionary basis. The discretionary relationship means

that they first establish a relationship with the client, help them to determine their expectations from their investments, then set out those expectations in an Investment Policy Statement and Managed Account Agreement. What it means to have a managed account from a client perspective is that they do not need to interrupt you during your day to get approval for a trade. “We make investments as we see fit in client’s portfolios to achieve the client’s goals,” explains Giesbrecht’s partner, Jennifer Snyder. This means that discussions with clients are now more about the performance of the portfolios as it relates to their clients goals, the clients overall views on their investments, and their risk tolerances for the future. It is a meaningful discussion as opposed to them explaining a covered call strategy, for example. “Life is hectic enough, very often the last thing you have time for during your work day or while you are at the lake is a call from your broker about this trade or the other,” remarks Snyder. With the pressure of someone on the phone waiting, sometimes decisions are made too quickly, without sufficient knowledge on the topic or not at all, for fear of making the wrong choice. Anseeuw’s partner, Kelly Hemmett, points out people generally make decisions based on emotions and then justify those decisions with logic. As such, people are continually at risk of making an emotional

decision in a situation where a logical one would serve them better. “Our true value is found in always providing our clients with the truth, even when they don’t like the answers,” he comments. Warren Buffet said successful investors are greedy when others are fearful and fearful when others are greedy. “We stand between a client and their desire to let emotions guide their investment decisions. We base our choices on quantitative and qualitative research; we all know we should buy low and sell high, but our emotions often guide us in a different direction,” states Anseeuw.

Control What You Can Control “When it comes to building a sound financial plan, there are components you can control and those you cannot. Despite economic and/or political challenges, environmental or natural disasters, we strive to ensure your plan protects you as best as possible against the unknown and takes advantage of what you can control,” says Hemmett. “Everyone is aware they pay taxes, however, retirees and business owners do not always position their assets to be as tax efficient as possible. We can control how we structure our assets from a tax perspective, yet individuals often overlook strategies to lower their overall tax exposure,” Anseeuw states. If you could keep the 3% you paid in tax, on a $500,000 investment compounded for 15 years (assuming a zero tax rate), you would accumulate over $275,000 of extra capital. Often the tax landscape deserves a second look given the financial impact it can have on an individual.

Creating Wealth and Peace of Mind for You A growing number of investors are becoming more concerned about their welfare as they age. It’s no secret Canadians are living longer and many are running the risk of outliving their money. “We help people solve their financial concerns and create peace of mind in their lives,” remarks Hemmett. “Realizing there is far more to the equation than simply rates of return and investment cost is where a quality advisor’s value can be found,” he states. Anseeuw further questions, “If you could retire or meet a significant goal years earlier without compromising your standard of living today, would you want to know how to do it?” At Harbourfront Wealth Management, their focus is on both what your wealth can do for you today and in the years ahead. The New Amphibious Vehicles:

American inventor, Oliver Evans, developed the first known self-propelled amphibious vehicle called the Orukter Amphibolos in 1805 — although it’s since been disputed whether it successfully travelled over land and water under its own steam. Fast-forward more than 200 years and there’s not much to be disputed now. Amphibious bicycles, ATVs, cars, buses, trucks, military vehicles and hovercrafts can be seen cruising through deserts, gliding over lakes and sometimes even submerging under water.

W

hen you think of amphibious vehicles like, for example, hovercrafts, The Jetsons theme song may play in the back of your mind alongside a futuristic blinking sound. However, while George Jetson’s amphibious vehicle can fly through space, the ones currently being developed and used are a little more down to earth.

One of the most successful forays into the development of amphibious vehicles is California-based WaterCar, which established itself as a company to watch in 1999 for developing and marketing amphibious vehicles. “Growing up in southern California I was always involved in this kind of industry,” says WaterCar founder, Dave March. “We looked at the Second World War amphibious vehicles, which were real slow and realized we could do something better. We saw an opportunity.” For March, what started out as a personal challenge to build the world’s fastest amphibious vehicle, turned into a successful and exciting career. “We weren’t really sure whether people would be interested in what we were doing,” says March. “No one has been very successful in the past, but once we started, people were really receptive to it.”

March says when they began developing their first model, millionaires from around the world continuously approached WaterCar looking to purchase their own amphibious vehicle. March has even taken a deposit from the Prince of Dubai. “We became overwhelmed by the reception,” he says. “We were doing it more for fun than anything else.” However, March stresses that attaining a level of reliability and maintainability that was consistent with WaterCar’s standards and those of its prospective buyers was of the utmost priority. “Our team was adamant that we wouldn’t sell a product that we wouldn’t purchase ourselves,” says March. After 14 years filled with successes and failures, it was in 2013 that the amphibious model, Panther, achieved the quality, reliability and maintainability March was looking for. “Each Panther is a custom-built vehicle,” says March. In January 2010, March broke the Guinness amphibious speed record with WaterCar’s Python model. “I was driving,” recalls March, “and I was both excited and concerned because no one had ever gone that fast. We used a tremendous amount of caution.” March says the Python model reached speeds from 150 to 200 mph and looking back, he says, “I eventually became comfortable with the high speeds because once you get out there, it’s really cool. I can’t express what it’s like every time you drive one of these models.”

WaterCar broke new ground when it came to developing amphibious vehicles. It boasts a dozen different models that can go off-road, above water and even cruise down the highway. Models like the Turnkey Minus, which is a Panther package and includes everything you need to cover for land and water, is one of those vehicles. According to WaterCar’s website, all one has to supply is a new, rebuilt or a used Honda 3.5 or 3.7 V-TEC Engine and a 091 VW bus Transmission, along with your choice of custom paint and design. March says companies often reach out to WaterCar to market their brands in a unique way to pique consumers’ interest. “It’s definitely unusual, but it’s a great marketing piece of interest.” While the military has used amphibious vehicles for years, it’s become more of a fun and exciting luxury novelty for those closer to a large mass of water. “Our models can keep up with other boats in the water,” says March. “You can even go water-skiing.” WaterCar’s Python model (a price tag of $200,000) used to break the Guinness record, reaches speeds of up to 60 mph in the water with a Dominator Jet and Corvette engine. March says he was surprised by the various ways clients used their models. “It’s been used in many ways we hadn’t even envisioned,” he says. “It’s very convenient for people who have an island and use it to travel to and from, as well as on land.” Many clients also carry the models on their yachts when they encounter ports with restricted access. For those looking into purchasing an amphibious vehicle, the Panther is currently offered in three states of completion: Rolling Chassis, Turnkey Minus and Complete Custom. However, please note, the Complete Custom version may be a challenge or impossible to license and register for street use in some states or provinces. Something to Make You Sparkle By Tori Stafford  Photos BTL Wedding

There is something about the moment an outfit comes together that makes a woman feel beautiful, confident and ready to take on the world.

O

ften it is a little something extra that makes the moment happen: the ideal accessory to accent the clothing and the woman. If anyone in Winnipeg knows how to find that ideal piece and how to pair it perfectly with beautiful clothing, it is Joan DruxmanJones, owner and operator of Joan’s... Accessories and More. “There is something about looking in the mirror and seeing the person looking back at you who looks good, looks healthy, looks

put together,” she says. “There is an art to putting together an outfit, and, like any art, it has to flow and have a rhythm. If it doesn’t, it is like grating nails on a chalkboard to me.” A trailblazer in the Canadian fashion industry, Druxman-Jones has over 58 years of experience in women’s attire. For her, finding accessories from around the world for her Winnipeg store is a lifelong treasure hunt. “And the hunt is far from over,” she explains. ABOVE Joan Druxman-Jones

“People ask me all the time why I’m not burnt out from working in fashion all these years. It is simple, really: It just keeps getting better!” Druxman Jones expresses with her signature contagious spirit for style. “When I started in this industry, you had linen, cotton, silk and wool. You matched your handbag and shoes, and your skirt had to be X number of inches from the floor,” she continues. “Now, there are no rules... you do what you want, and use clothing and accessories to really express yourself. It’s wonderful!” Druxman-Jones opened Joan’s... Accessories and More in 2011, returning

to her native Winnipeg from Los Angeles, after studying acting, a stint as a fashion consultant for Nordstrom, and buying accessories for pop-up shops. By opening her store, DruxmanJones aimed to bring to Winnipeg unique and exciting accessories unlike anything available elsewhere in the city. From jewellery and hair ornaments, to handbags, scarves, belts, clothing and gift items, Druxman-Jones delivers on this mission time and again, offering the women of Winnipeg a place to find the items that make an outfit, and a woman, truly shine. At the same time, her pieces offer a way to update a ‘little black dress,’ or add sparkle to a timeless favourite. At the end of the day,

sharing her passion for fashion and helpful tips to “pull it all together” is the best part of what she does, Druxman Jones declares. “I think it is important that people embrace fashion and express themselves, with style, accessories, and colour — whatever makes them feel good,” she says. “All it takes is confidence, and I can give women that confidence.”

Their specialty is hand-decorated sugar cookies, which they make for birthday parties, weddings, corporate functions,

BILLIARDS SPORTS BAR

Your Bar — Any Night of the Week By Brandi Parnell  Photos Clark Moeller

F

lea Whiskey’s Billiards, Cafe and Bar is not your regular pool hall. Recently renovated, Flea Whiskey’s remains true to its initial concept – inviting, affordable and adaptable. Expanded to include an openconcept design, its lounge and dining room beckons a gathering. With over a dozen flat-screen televisions and two large projector screens, it is, according to Flea Whiskey’s extensive fan-base, the only place in town for watching sports on the big screen.

Something for Everyone “We hear it all the time: Flea Whiskey’s is the place they go to when a bar’s too loud and a lounge is too quiet,” remarks David Richards, operations manager and co-owner. Flea Whiskey’s opened over 15 years ago and has since amassed a loyal

Pool sharks from across the city frequent Flea Whiskey’s because of its expanded billiards room. In fact, Richards says one of the reasons he and co-owner Nick Hanson opened up the space was for pool leagues, adding additional seating areas, a seating lounge with a fireplace and 17 billiard tables. And, on Mondays, pool games are half-off when you bring the ladies.

You won’t find better home-cut fries paired with the signature Flea Whiskey burger: a flame-broiled, homemade sixounce beef burger loaded with all the toppings – the perfect companion for an ice-cold brew. Home to 10 different types of draft beer, including local microbreweries like Half Pints and Fort Garry, Flea Whiskey’s is the place to sit back and relax any night of the week.

items include their “must try” fish and chips – Friday’s lunch special - along with many other favourites from their Greek potato skins to their wings, their fish tacos or their infamous steak sandwich.

Party On Best of all, the Flea Whiskey’s team know how to throw a great party. They will customize just about any event with a lounge that can hold up to 180 guests, and two smaller semi-private rooms (one with a projector screen and the other with a billiard table) that can hold up to 20 guests for a more intimate gathering. Just as with the regular pub menu, events are catered to with the same mouth-watering fare. “We make platters in-house ... the food is always fresh,” Hanson explains. “We’re more than appetizers: we offer crudités, assorted sandwiches trays and custom made-to-order platters too.” Planning a celebration soon? Because of Flea Whiskey’s popular party hosting and with the Holiday season fast approaching, Richards advises: “Sign up early! We book up quickly, and you don’t want to be disappointed!” With ample free parking, Flea Whiskey’s is the perfect place. By staging a home for sale, the homeowner can turn an ordinary property into an extraordinary listing — one of the smartest decisions a seller can make. “It’s an inviting home in a buyer’s mind,” says Dayman. “Staged homes usually sell much faster, and with more satisfied buyers. We can stage your home for sale, as well as de-clutter and reorganize your home for better living.” While many people are reluctant to hire cleaners, it isn’t because cost is the primary factor; it’s because they feel uneasy about having a stranger come into their home. Dayman, a former business education teacher, understands how to operate a successful company and give her clients a sense of ease when it comes to their services. “I think people want to hire a service that is thorough, secure and affordable on a consistent basis; that’s what I guarantee to my clients,” she says. “Peace of mind is worth a lot. That’s my personal and business standard.” Dayman’s standards are very high. Every new client is given a free in-home estimate to provide a customized work order and an accurate price. “[Customers] want to have confidence in the company they hire and in the cleaner who enters their home.

This is my guarantee for my clients,” she says. “We are, of course, licensed, bonded and insured and we prove it by showing our documents when we do an in-home estimate. Take Time has over 20 staff members, many of which have been with us for years. We put a lot of time and effort into training our staff. We thoroughly screen our trainees and if they pass our thorough training process, they are absolute professionals. They must have demonstrated consistency in detail cleaning and in providing excellent customer service before they can have their own schedule.” Depending on the size of the job, cleaners will either work solo or in pairs and each job site will have the same assigned employee every service. “I love the accountability and consistency this allows, and I know that my clients do too,” she says. At Take Time, they adhere to a 100 per cent satisfaction guarantee. If, in any case, clients aren’t completely satisfied with the cleaning their house receives, Take Time’s staff will make it right. “If problems are reported within 24 hours, we’ll come back to your home to fix whatever concerns you have until you’re absolutely satisfied with the quality of the cleaning.” Take Time Home Cleaning & Lifestyle Services Cindy Dayman 204.770.7103 www.taketime.ca

CLOTHING STORE

Fashionable Fellas

Effortless, Contemporary Style Awaits at Style Bar Boutique By Rebecca Henderson Photos BTL Wedding

O

sborne Village has always favoured women’s clothing stores, however Regan Greenwood aims to change that with Style Bar Boutique — a contemporary men and women’s fashion boutique. “The men’s style here is career casual,” says Greenwood, who attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in L.A. For men’s clothing, all brands are exclusive to Style Bar. “I won’t carry anything that’s

carried anywhere else.” Some of the brands included are BLKWD Denim, which is raw denim, and 7 Diamond Shirts. Greenwood likes to carry brands that are not only recognizable and exclusive to Style Bar, but also of the highest quality. “I think the first thing is quality [when I look at clothes]. I try to focus on name brands that people will recognize, but I never want to bring something in and it falls apart,” she says. “I have a history in fashion design and I think that mentality is instilled in me.”

Yet, even with quality, Style Bar knows the value of price. Greenwood doesn’t want to carry anything that will break the bank. “There’s nothing more than $200 in my store,” she says. “On the women’s side there’s nothing more than $100.” This fall Greenwood plans to expand the men’s side with more T-shirts and a male accessory line. She also wants to expand the BLKWD Denim line, which is one of the most popular brands at Style Bar, to carry chinos. Chinos are a casual but sophisticated pant that will come in an array of colours and patterns. “It’s a good

option when you don’t want to wear jeans or slacks,” says Greenwood. “I do a lot of magazine trend research and get feedback from my customers,” says Greenwood of deciding what to bring into Style Bar. “I also go to shows in the States, which showcase different designers from all over the world.” On the women’s side, the clothing is also career casual, carrying brands like Collective Concepts and Everly. Much of the fashion at Style Bar is effortless, offering statement pieces that can be used for work or play. For women’s fall fashion, Greenwood is planning on bringing in more bags as well as a new jewellery line called CoutuKitsch. Greenwood exclusively carries the Half United jewellery line — an accessory line where half of the proceeds go towards helping support the fight against global hunger.

Style Bar carries Sniff Soy Candles from Australia as well — and is the only store in North America to do so. “My favourite is the fresh flowers candle — you don’t even have to light it and it makes the whole room smell great.” In fact, walking into Style Bar can be described as intoxicating, with a myriad of scents wafting in the open and naturally lit boutique. Greenwood is inviting, ready to offer her style advice whenever needed. “I want people to feel comfortable in my boutique.” Style Bar is open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 a.m. to 5 p.m.

After all, there is an art to making a perfect cup of joe and there’s no excuse to drink anything subpar. At least not according to the De Luca’s. Back in the day, coffee was the last thing people thought about when it came to a culinary masterpiece. That is

“We have a 10,000 sq. ft. roasting facility. We source, import and roast green coffee beans from all over the world. We sell (retail and wholesale) everything from espresso beans to unique blends that are made onsite. Single origin coffee is delicious, but sometimes you want a flavour combination, which is why we create our own blends sure to satisfy all coffee lovers.”

Roast, Grind, Sip De Luca’s sells a full range of espresso machines and accessories. De Luca is always happy to help his customer’s find the right option. “Some people need a great cup of coffee made quickly, others prefer a slow drip with freshly frothed milk. Some people want to have their milk and espresso ready at exactly the same time. Either way, we’re here to help.” De Luca’s has a staff of full-time repairmen to service the machines they sell. They offer coffee delivery to all commercial locations and work closely with many local restaurants. “Our dad was the first person in Canada to import Elektra espresso machines from Italy.” From a single boiler to a dual boiler machine with PID controlled temperature, De Luca’s has the right machine for you – whether it is an eye-catching piece of art or your gateway to the perfect cup of coffee. “Come and see us. In fact, when it comes to coffee, De Luca and many others would tell you it is as important as any other part of a gourmet meal. So what is it that differentiates one cup from another? “The entry point for a good cup of coffee is freshly roasted, freshly ground beans,” says De Luca, who comes from a long line of coffee, specifically espresso, drinkers. “That and a good espresso machine is all you need to leave your dinner guests impressed.”

De Luca’s is a wholesaler of both coffee beans and espresso machines with a full service team of technicians and is open to the public. COSMETIC CLINIC

Look and Feel Better in Your Skin Photos BTL Wedding

Whether you’re bothered by a chronic skin condition, the signs of aging or a tattoo that you’ve grown tired of - aesthetic irks previously thought to be permanent are changing. Dr. Amanda Patenaude and the staff at SkinRhümMD are at the forefront of these changes in Canada.

A

specialist in Internal Medicine with fellowship training in Autoimmune, Autoimmune Skin Diseases and member of the National Society of Cosmetic Physicians, Dr. Amanda Patenaude has trained with experts from around the globe to bring the latest aesthetic technologies to Winnipeg. From antiaging medicine to varicose veins, tattoo removal and more - Patenaude’s clinic, SkinRhümMD, is pioneering some of the most advanced techniques and technologies for all things skin. SkinRhümMD first opened its doors in June 2012. Located in the Pritchard Health Centre in East St. Paul, Dr. Patenaude opened the clinic with the goal of elevating aesthetic medicine above and beyond the norm. “Having training in several different areas has allowed me to bring a rounded perspective to my patients’ skin needs,” explains Dr. Patenaude. “There are a lot of good

products and procedures out there SkinRhümMD only carries the best ones.” To be sure, the popularity of medical aesthetics has soared in recent years in Manitoba and beyond. SkinRhümMD’s provision of an aesthetic and medical service clinic allows its staff to consider aesthetics more holistically. According to clinic manager Carris Somogyi, “We get a lot of calls from patients who are weary about cosmetic procedures. The fact we offer medical services in addition to these makes them feel that they can trust the quality of care.” The flip side to the rising popularity of cosmetic services is the heightened awareness among patients in terms of the necessity for trained and certified expertise - an issue about which Dr. Patenaude is keenly aware. “Our staff formulates the safest, most effective treatment plan for cosmetic results and overall skin health with each of

our patient’s individually,” asserts Dr. Patenaude. Together, SkinRhümMD’s staff boasts 17 years of experience in the cosmetic field. All services are performed either by a physician or laser technician with certification in all areas and treatment methods provided. While SkinRhümMD caters to all patients, skin types, genders and ages, anti-aging procedures are among the most commonly requested. In this vein, SkinRhümMD offers a wide range of at-home and in-office procedures including: medical grade skin care, SilkPeel Dermalinfusion, laser resurfacing, photofacials, laser hair removal, injectable dermal fillers, Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport®, skin tightening, body contouring, tattoo removal, vein treatments/sclerosing and more. According to Dr. Patenaude, the most popular cosmetic package combines medical grade skincare with laser

resurfacing. “This combination improves the texture, pore size, pigment damage, and overall skin tightening,” she explains, adding that the particular combination is customized according to a patient’s budget and tolerance for social downtime. Among SkinRhümMD’s newest technologies is a skin rejuvenation laser which allows the trained staff to treat multiple skin conditions. From rosacea to skin texture to veins and more - the device allows SkinRhümMD’s staff to combine modalities to achieve dramatically robust, customized, noticeable results for their patients. Another service SkinRhümMD is proud to debut is laser tattoo removal. Reported to be growing by more than 30 per cent a year in the US, tattoo removal in a medically supervised environment is becoming an increasingly popular option for women and men. “A lot of our patients

are people who just want to feel comfortable in their skin again,” says Carris, clinic manager. To be sure, high performance skin care has become a critical component of Dr. Patenaude’s practice. “I’ve trained and continue to train extensively with Dr. Zein Obagi,” says Dr. Patenaude, “The new medical ZO line provides transformative results and I suggest it to all of my patients, especially those with more significant skin concerns such as acne, pigment or advanced signs of aging.” Other skin care carried by SkinRhümMD includes brands for advanced scar and stretch mark revision, regeneration and hydroquinone-free brightening products. Another popular procedure with SkinRhümMD’s patients is dermal filling. “There’s a lot of mystery among patients when it comes to injectable dermal fillers,” notes Dr. Patenaude. Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Perlane® and Restylane®, are among

the better known in this product category and work by replacing the hyaluronic acid (a collagen component) and are commonly used to improve the appearance of nasolabial folds and other creases, scars, lips and more. The result is a natural, refreshed, younger looking appearance in a short time. As Dr. Patenaude describes, “Our patients come in wanting advice about improving the quality and aging process of their skin. Dermal fillers are non-invasive and can be done in about 30 to 40 minutes in the office.” Accordingly, Dr. Patenaude uses the latest injecting techniques, which cause minimal trauma to the skin, allow for quick healing and require little to no social downtime. Filler options also include SelphylTM, which uses the patient’s own blood as filling material and Sculptra®, a voluminizing filler for the longer lasting results. Of course, Dr. Patenaude’s expertise is

not limited to the face. SkinRhümMD offers a variety of options for the prevention and treatment of vein abnormalities. Be it related to pregnancy, long hours on your feet or genetics: varicose veins can be addressed by a variety of means and according to each patient’s skin type and lifestyle. Because conditions like varicose veins can be associated with other medical conditions, patients presenting with vein complaints require a consultation prior to any treatment decision.

As SkinRhümMD enters its third year, Dr. Patenaude and her team look forward to offering their growing patient base even more options for the appearance and health of their skin. “I’m really proud to be able to bring technologies and techniques from around the world to my hometown of Winnipeg,” states Dr. Patenaude, “SkinRhümMD is the type of practice I’ve always wanted to lead and I’m excited for another year of helping patient’s to look and feel their best.”

Other surgical medical services at SkinRhümMD include lesion, skin tag and mole removal. Since it’s opening, SkinRhümMD has developed an active and loyal patient base as well as an active Facebook following. The clinic space, which Dr. Patenaude worked directly to design, is inviting, discrete and has even been featured in Style Manitoba Magazine for its custom stain glass décor.

CUSTOM CONTAINER HOMES

Durable, Economical, Transportable, Green

Think Inside the Box By Henny Buffinga

C

anada imports many products in steel shipping containers, but once the goods come out they often languish in disuse in shipyards collecting dust. These shipping containers are actually incredibly durable and meant to last long journeys across the ocean. With some ingenuity and repurposing, they can be made into homes, sportsman’s cabins, mobile offices, shops, outdoor bathrooms, and more. Or as Kustom Container Builders says, you can transform them into whatever epic dream you have.

84

FineLifestyles

WINNIPEG

Kustom Container Builders is based in Winnipeg and serves the entire Manitoba and Saskatchewan region. They employ architects and engineers to create designs for their custom units, and with the help of subcontractors, their team can make anything you dream up. With these units they are creating innovative spaces that are structurally, economically and environmentally superior. What goes into the container is up to the customer, so it can be tailored to meet their budget, giving a great deal of flexibility. The containers are typically 10,

20 or 40 feet, and stacking two creates a two-storey unit. The units are extremely durable with three inches of steel, so not only are they going to last a long time, but they are incredibly secure against breakins as well. They are easily transported on a flatbed truck, making them the perfect option for deep woods cabins. These units are perfect for rural areas since they are virtually impossible to break into, as well as fire proof and weather proof once the steel is treated.

These units are very appealing for people looking for green buildings. Canada imports more goods than we export, and one cargo ship can hold 15,000 shipping containers. These sit in a shipyard unused while export countries continue to make more. Not only are these units repurposing otherwise unused materials, but they are incredibly durable and the materials won’t break down as a wood cabin or office might. Kustom Container Builders has been a dream of Kurt Witten’s for a while, but he made it a reality a year and a half ago. Witten was inspired by his father who was an architect and draws from years of experience in design and landscaping in order to create and design these innovative custom units. Kustom Container Builders is a unique company that has brought a unique business model and product to the prairies. Their custom buildings are well suited to the prairie lifestyle, and they are a great option for anyone, from the retired couple looking for a cottage to the young entrepreneur looking for an environmentally friendly storefront or small restaurant. “I think that people should think when they are building their homes, that for environmental reasons, they should build small and insulate well,” says Witten. CUSTOM JEWELLER

The Place Your Jeweller Does Not Want You to Know About By Fine Lifestyles Staff Photos Shawn Fillion

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the jewellery you wear should to be as unique as you are. Jewellery is a means of expressing your personal style, taste and beauty. There are few things in life you invest in that you actually wear on a daily basis; those pieces you choose to invest in need to be suited to your individuality and bring you joy with each wear. Custom jewellery made in-house at Sutton Smithworks does just that, says co-owner Peggy Sutton — it brings a smile to the faces of those who wear it.

utton Smithworks is a family owned and operated jewellery store offering a selection of unique gold and silver jewellery along with repair and custom made services. All work is done on site.

“Our showroom has something for everyone, and creating custom pieces means that we are creating exactly what the customer wants,” says Peggy. “Our customers are so ecstatic about the work we do that we often receive hugs. It’s wonderful to create personalized jewellery that is unique to each customer.” Tom Sutton is a master goldsmith with a keen eye for quality in all repairs and custom work. Opened in 1993, the goldsmiths at Sutton Smithworks have more than 75 years of combined experience. They are dedicated to creating custom pieces, engagement rings, keepsake jewellery, and repairs to items their clients love to wear. Tom’s son, James, is a CAD/CAM genius. The only limitation is the customer’s imagination. Sutton Smithworks truly can make jewellery dreams come true, from the perfect ring for a bride-to-be to a restored family treasure. Peggy says the service and care customers receive at Sutton Smithworks is personalized to address their needs, desires and budgets. One of the most unique jewellery options Sutton Smithworks offers is their line of keepsake jewellery. Created using CAD/ CAM software in ways that no one else does, James can take a photograph or a fingerprint from a client, and sculpt it in wax to create a three-dimensional image. The tip of the mill used to carve is 1/100th of a millimetre, so every detail is captured. This wax is then cast in metal.

Nothing is more personal than one-of-a-kind fingerprint wedding bands. Sutton Smithworks not only designs custom pieces for their customers, they also do precision work on customers’

existing jewellery. With everything from fixing the clasp on a favourite necklace to remaking an inherited piece, Sutton Smithworks offers customers a way to breathe new life into their jewellery. They also offer “divorce jewellery” services, Peggy expresses with a smile — just because a relationship has lost its lustre, it doesn’t mean the diamond in your old engagement ring has.

“Our lives change, our styles change, and so our jewellery changes, too,” Peggy says. “As you transform your life, your jewellery transforms along with you.” Sutton Smithworks Ltd. 316-283 Portage Ave., Winnipeg 204.942.5236 info@suttonsmithworks.com www.suttonsmithworks.com

Bill has a great eye for where the light should go to ensure there are no dark corners in the room. A seasoned electrician, Bill started his company 25 years ago. However, in 2004, he was physically attacked and suffered a serious brain injury. His dedication to his employees and their livelihood remained strong, and after five years of rehabilitation, he regained control of his company. Now fully recovered, he is once again able to do wiring with finesse. Bill couldn’t have triumphed without the hard work and loving care of his wife, who remained by his side throughout the process. Janine stood by her husband during his recovery, learning the books in order to keep the business going. “I learned a lot,” she says. “I learned to support him, and I’m really glad I did.” It was important to the Froviches to take care of their own. “Bill really hustles to get work for the guys, he takes personal care to make sure they have enough work to take care of their families,” Janine says. “That’s

ENCLOSURES

Enjoy the Outdoors from Inside the Comfort of Your Home By Rebecca Henderson

T

here’s nothing quite like the great outdoors. But when it comes to inclement weather, insects and other irritants, enjoyment can quickly turn to frustration —until now. Suncoast Enclosures promises homeowners outdoor enjoyment with their aesthetically pleasing and durable sunrooms. Now Winnipeggers can stay outdoors longer from inside the comfort of their own home. “With our rooms you feel connected to the outdoors while still enjoying the comforts of home,” says Scott Benson, owner of Suncoast Manitoba and regional manager of Suncoast Enclosures in both Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. “Your sunroom is a like second living

94

FineLifestyles

WINNIPEG

space — with added amenities such as an entertainment unit, dining room or fireplace — while being able to bring in as much of the outdoors as you want through your windows.” Suncoast offers three custom products and each product comes with distinct benefits to suit their customers’ needs: • a screen room • a three-season room • a louvered room A Suncoast room offers protection without feeling enclosed by a roof or walls. “Screen rooms are a great addition to a hot tub or pool,” Benson adds. “They keep insects and leaves out of the water without closing it off from the sun or

rain.” Best of all, the screen rooms allow you to watch the stars and enjoy a breeze without the irritation of insects. These rooms utilize the high-tension screens as roof panels, which are engineered for harsh Manitoba winters. Each Suncoast room offers three screen densities to block desired amounts of sun and wind to allow varying levels of privacy, wind protection and shade, while still providing a full view. “Some customers even use our screen rooms to eliminate their air conditioning bills,” says Benson. With the addition of a polycarbonate roof, you can enjoy the room on rainy days at the same time, allowing 95 per cent of light into the room. Even on overcast days the polycarbonate roof gives off a

glow that creates an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. The lightweight aluminum frames can also be custom powder coated in hundreds of different colours, and even anodized to tie into existing colour schemes. Suncoast’s three-season room is the perfect sunroom, offering an open, bright space with 75 per cent ventilation when the windows are open, and an extended enjoyment of the seasons when they are closed. Three-season rooms are often prewired for electricity, meaning they can offer many of the comforts of your home. “As with all of our rooms, they’re all custom-built,” Benson says. “Many people find they can use the rooms for nine months of the year with a small heat source, whether it’s turning the space into a second dining room, or adding an entertainment unit or fireplace. It becomes a summer living room where you spend most of your time.” Screen rooms can always be turned into three season rooms down the road with the simple addition of windows, giving you the ultimate flexibility if you aren’t sure what is right for your space and needs. Suncoast rooms are designed and built for your existing deck or patio, which can save you the cost of building a new floor or foundation.

If you’re looking for some shade while sitting outside, the louvered roof has the appearance of a pergola, a common feature in gardens or outdoor sitting areas. A pergola faces east to west and blocks direct sunlight from those seated beneath, while remaining open to the sky. The louvered roof offers the same look, but with the touch of a button it can close the slats to block out rain with a tight seal. “It allows you to close it up and keep the furniture dry,” says Benson. “It’s a nice feature for the front of a south-facing house or over a patio.” Benson and his cousin began working with Suncoast for a summer several years ago, and fell in love with the products. Now as the owner, he continues the family connection with his brother as foreman on the building crew, and his sister helping with trade shows. Benson and his crew pride themselves on offering an excellent experience for their customers. “We provide prompt

and reliable service; we do it right the first time,” he says. “We always spend the extra time to get it done right. We never take shortcuts, and in the end we just want the customer to be satisfied. These are values I instill in everybody who works with us.” “An advantage to our service is flexibility,” continues Benson. “We build every room on site, so we can accommodate a second-storey balcony, a bay window, multi-level decks or protruding rooflines. We are always looking forward to accommodating the unique challenges each job possesses.” Suncoast Enclosures commonly have a mansard roof style, setting them apart from the classic shed-style sunroom that becomes very low in the middle of the room. The mansard roof is sloped, and the look blends well with most styles of home. “This gives our enclosures a modern and clean look,” says Benson. “They are like no other sunroom on the market.” Suncoast Enclosures are an excellent addition to any home, cottage, pool or business, which means Benson has happy customers all over Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. “I would definitely recommend not only Suncoast, but your company because of the integrity of your work and your level of service. I already have done so to many people,” says Heather White, a Suncoast client in Winnipeg. “I love having the extra useable living space, outside — without being accosted by the bugs, even in rainy weather and earlier/later in the season.” In addition to the showrooms available at the Nite Hawk Café in West Hawk Lake, MB. and the Shell on TransCanada Highway in Clearwater Bay, Ont., Benson has a new showroom at St. Mary’s Nursery & Garden Centre in Winnipeg — available for viewing anytime or by appointment. GARAGE DOORS

Lifting the Door For Options By Fine Lifestyles Staff

T

“Be an opener of doors.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

oday, there are many ways to showcase your style when it comes to the exterior of your home. Just like your front door, a garage door doesn’t just come in one colour or style. In fact, new garage doors have the ability to change the overall look and feel of your home, enhancing its appearance.

102

FineLifestyles

WINNIPEG

At The Garage Door Depot, June and Dean Murfitt believe “the garage door is the new front door!” And while the options are exciting for homeowners, they can be equally overwhelming. “There are many different facets that make up a door,” says June. “Not only do you have style and colour to choose from, but

there may be other considerations such as insulation type and the construction of the door.” When considering a new garage door, homeowners should always remember the impact their selection will have on the style, look and livability of their home. “Curb appeal is a large consideration since a good-size portion of the front of

the house is made up of the garage door,” says June. “It’s part of a design process and is almost always the first thing you see when you look at a home.” The Garage Door Depot has access to many attractive garage door designs for homeowners today including Amarr and Haas doors — high quality design and construction perfect for residential and commercial applications.

Dream BIG: Open a Door At The Garage Door Depot, designs range from traditional to carriage house designs, which are more reminiscent of the old world barn-style doors. “The Classica Series by Amarr is our most popular carriage house line; it offers larger windows and panels than your traditional size,” says June. The Classica door comes in eight different panel designs and can be customized with wood grain options as well as two-tone colour options. Feeling more stylistic? The Garage Door Depot also carries specialty doors such as Amarr’s Trento two-section overlap by Silvelox, Timber Valley Collection, a composite overlay with many custom designs, along with the Vista contemporary aluminum and glass design by Amarr. The Haas door line is Garage Door Depot’s latest addition to the quality manufacturers that make many traditional and carriage house designs available in a variety of colours.

Not Just A Pretty Face If you’re looking to enhance the exterior of your home, estimates are free at The Garage Door Depot and best to be done onsite. “It is incredibly important to us to be transparent with our clients. We make sure they know there are no hidden costs or fees. We provide our clients with the full scope of work to be done, whether it is prior to the install or at the time of the install,” says June earnestly. The Garage Door Depot always brings a full-page colour brochure and colour samples for each client to see how the colour and design will look when it’s finished. But they don’t just install new doors; in fact, they offer much more. They will do repairs and maintenance to any make of door on the market — residential or commercial. They also install aluminum cladding to make your garage entrance completely maintenance-free.

“Best of all,” says Murfitt, “The Garage Door Depot sells and installs Swisstrax flooring to enhance the overall look of the garage floor, along with car lifts for customers who want to store vehicles in their own garage.” From start to finish, they will walk you through the process to install a car lift or specialty flooring in your garage. With the wide variety of doors and excellent customer service to match, The Garage Door Depot is the perfect place to make your “garage door your new front door!”

HOME BASED BUSINESS

Happy Sipping A Recipe for Success One Leaf at a Time By Brandi Parnell Photos courtesy Steeped Tea

he “Tea Besties” are well known around Winnipeg for the unique ways that they steep their tea. They use tea to make everything from guacamolTEA, to Blueberry Thyme Champagne to Pumpkin Apple Soup. What you may not know though is that they are two topproducing mommas who not only steep tea, they brew success, through their home-based businesses.

“The sky is the limit,” says Lisa Berezowski, The Tea Hag. “I had the opportunity to change careers without changing my salary to sell tea full time.” Not only that, both she and her tea bestie Melissa Tannahill have rubbed elbows with CBC’s Dragons the Wealthy Barber, David Chilton, and Jim Treliving, Chairman and Founder of Boston Pizza, who did a deal with the parent company Steeped Tea.

In today’s culture, sipping tea and having the flexibility to put family first is a privilege - one quite attainable for consultants with Steeped Tea.

But that’s not all; they have earned a pot full of incentives including a Caribbean cruise and an all-expenses paid trips for two to Costa Rica - selling tea. “I didn’t set out to push tea but I believe in the

product and especially the company. People just came to me,” says Tannahill. Their strategy is simple, they have fun, they set goals, and they lean on and motivate one another. Steeped Tea founder and president, Tonia Jahshan said, “The great thing about Melissa and Lisa is seeing them achieve their goals. Steeped Tea is really achievable for anyone. We’re really a big family. We share a Facebook page and we talk all the time.” In fact, during the interview, Tannahill was communicating with head office. The communication is wide open, the rewards are limitless and the options are endless.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to be part of the Steeped Tea team. I love the business model and, as importantly, the entrepreneurs. Tonia and Hatem are not only good business people, but also just plain good people.” —Jim Treliving, Franchise baron.

Together they have taken tea and infused it, in their life, their recipes and their families. “Once you start drinking the tea, you’ll want more. There are countless health benefits, not to mention all the different varieties that Steeped Tea carries.” Berezowski is referring to the natural flavours, bits of fruits and notable superfoods, like Matcha and nettle. “Best of all, you’re supporting local people just like you who are letting life happen paying for one dance class, one music lesson, one hockey practice at a time,” remarks Berezowski about a flexible career selling tea that can be done from home without limitation.

I see them more as mixologists who have a fresh new approach to a grocery list item but anyone can become a consultant or even a hobbyist for an affordable one time investment of $149.00. ‘The Dragons’ backed company has amazing fundraising programs for schools, sports teams or someone you may know in need with a 40 per cent profit margin. The next Steeped Tea incentive is a trip to Montego Bay. Why wait? Tannahill says with a smile, “If you find this business isn’t for you, worst case scenario you drink your kit.” For more information, contact The Tea Hag or her bestie.

aura Jablonski fondly reminisces about the special childhood moments spent with her cherished grandmother. “She was as sweet as the treats stored in her many cookie tins.” She goes on to speak of her grandmother’s love of her art, literature and local and family history. Jablonski, founder and director of

care of Sycamore Specialty Care, credits much of her own creativity and confidence to the care and nurturing she received from her grandmother. Jablonski’s grandmother lived independently until nearly 80 years of age when she began to need increased

supportive care, with the onset of dementia and chronic illness. Jablonski’s family was forced to make the very difficult decision to move their beloved family matriarch into a long-term care facility where she could receive roundthe-clock care. This move deeply impacted each generation of the family.

At times, even after her grandmother’s passing, that decision still stirs up feelings of loss. Sycamore Specialty Care was inspired by the impact of the difficult decisions families make to provide the highest quality of life to aging family members. Home care services may be required by persons of any age, but the majority of those receiving in-home care are seniors. Sycamore Specialty Care offers services designed with older adults in mind and with an emphasis on helping individuals and families remain as connected and supported as possible through the aging process. Since opening in July, Jablonski now has a growing team who offer a variety of services. “Some team members are great companion care providers, while others possess specialized knowledge and training in personal care. We work with clients to determine their needs and we offer them a connection to a care provider who will work to meet their needs,” she says. One of the unique services Jablonski and her team offer is e-Rendezvous, a service that narrows the gap between clients and their families who live apart. They will bring an iPad to the client, giving them time to catch up and visit

with family by email, video conferencing or whatever means works best for them, with staff assistance. Jablonski speaks passionately about the importance of fresh, creative approaches to community support services, particularly for the elderly. Her experiences through her work as a nurse and with loved ones in care led her to recognize the need for innovative service options to compensate for the unmet health and social needs of seniors. Caring and connection is really what it all comes down to for Jablonski. “Being in a position to enrich the lives of others, in particular helping older adults retain

a sense of security and independence, while also assisting families who may find themselves struggling to manage multiple demands and responsibilities, is a really amazing experience.” Sycamore Specialty Care aims to contemporize approaches to caregiving and care delivery, all in order to create more avenues and opportunities to optimize the health and wellness of seniors and families in our community. That’s the distinguishing feature they say makes them shine brighter. Sycamore Specialty Care Phone: 204.297.4904 www.sycamorecare.ca

A Tradition of Trust: Jewellers for Three Generations

JEWELLERY STORE

Not many people can say they purchased wedding rings from the same jeweller as both their parents and grandparents. But at Independent Jewellers, one of Winnipeg’s oldest and most reputable jewellery stores, third-generation clients are choosing the long-established business for the most important purchases of their lives. Known for its excellent service and outstanding selection of high-end metals and gemstones, the company has served local residents for 77 years.

ndependent Jewellers is blessed to have very loyal staff,” says coowner Jonathan Epp. “Many h ave been with us for over 10 years, and one member has worked here for 41 years. The staff works hard to make sure everyone leaves our store happy.”

Founded in 1937 by John H. Epp, Independent Jewellers was originally called Independent Credit Jewellers, as it was one of the first businesses in the area to sell items on credit. Epp’s sons eventually took over the company and in the 1990s, one of them, Ernie Epp, became the sole owner. An expert in gems, Ernie was one of the early graduate gemologists in Winnipeg, receiving his education from the Gemological Institute of America, which is the authority

on grading diamonds and coloured gemstones. A second Independent Jewellers’ location was opened in Polo Park Shopping Centre in 2003, and in 2013 Ernie’s sons Jonathan and Jeremy bought the company from their father. Offering a range of jewellery and accessories from brands such as Rolex, Breitling, Omega, TAG Heuer, Forevermark, Pandora, Tudor, and Mikimoto (the latter two at the Polo Park location), Independent Jewellers attracts a diverse clientele seeking pieces that are fashionable, elegant, and of exceptional quality. The store is the only dealer in Manitoba of both Rolex and Omega, and Jonathan says almost all of its other brands are either exclusive or sold by only one other dealer in the city. Popular items

include bridal rings, coloured gemstones, and, of course, diamond jewellery. “From extremely rare five-carat diamonds to a $150,000 Rolex or a simple emerald ring or jade pendant, we sell some of the most precious metals and gemstones on the planet,” says Jonathan. Along with being one of the longestestablished jewellers in the city, Independent Jewellers is the only jewellery store in the province to employ a certified Rolex technician, a full-time goldsmith, appraiser, and insurance specialist. This enables the company to fix watches in-house, complete a range of jewellery repairs and custom designs, assist people who have had their jewellery stolen, and give proper appraisals, all without clients’ items leaving the store.

“This gives the customers confidence, as they normally don’t like to have their items travel out of the store if possible,” says Jonathan. As a member of the American Gem Society (the only jeweller in Winnipeg with this certification), Independent Jewellers has been recognized as standing up to the ethical standards set out by the AGS. For clients, this means they can have complete confidence that the company adheres to governing laws regarding business practices and ethics. Because gemology is such a specialized area, it can be challenging for customers to understand the variation in factors such as gem quality and conflict-free diamonds. Knowing that Independent Jewellers is a member of the AGS gives

clients reassurance that the business they are dealing with is trustworthy in every area. Jonathan says being an AGS member also enables the company to obtain new brands and products more easily, as suppliers recognize their AGS status and thus are more likely to engage in business. “Trust is very important in our industry, both from the clients’ perspective and the suppliers,’” says Jonathan.

Following in the footsteps of their father, Jeremy and Jonathan are both on the path to becoming Graduate Gemologists. Independent Jewellers currently employs a full-time Graduate Gemologist, and Jonathan says the business has other staff members interested in the pursuit as well. This passion for gems is a central part of the service given by the company’s approximately 30-member team, along with a genuine caring for the clients’ experience. “It is amazing how many repeat customers we have who come in and ask for the person that helped them last time,” says Jonathan. “I believe having long-term employees is one key to great customer service. Our customers get to know our salespeople and feel comfortable in the store.” While owning and operating a successful business is always challenging, Jonathan says that helping clients find what they are looking for is a thrill. “I love my job,” he says. “We deal in happy occasions. From those getting engaged or married to celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, or simply treating themselves to a special purchase, people leave our store happy.” Independent Jewellers 493 Notre Dame Ave. and Polo Park Shopping Centre 204.774.5544 / 204.783.3113 www.independentjewellers.com ABOVE Jeremy and Jonathan Epp

ining out is much more than filling your belly: it’s about the experience and the chef’s ability to create a sensual voyage. At Monticchio Restaurante Italiano guests are treated to a first-class trip to Italy under the careful culinary tutelage of Italian-born Head Chef Mike Di Fonte. Nestled in one of Winnipeg’s oldest communities, Osborne Village, Monticchio is a feast for the senses.

120

WINNIPEG

For nearly 20 years Mike has been the culinary genius behind Monticchio’s shift from “just another pizza place” to one of Winnipeg’s finest Italian restaurants, a true hidden gem for those in the know. The restaurant has moved from its original location across the street to 684 Osborne Street. What was once a 10-table establishment has grown tenfold. The restaurant has loyal clientele who crave its delectable specialties, like freshly-made bread knots and cannelloni created with an authentic Italian flare.

Mike and his wife Bernadette, a native Winnipeger, decided to raise their three children in Canada. The move gave Mike the opportunity to share his culture and old-world family recipes with his new community. With decades of satisfied customers Monticchio’s has become a strong part of the community. “We are a neighbourhood staple. We have been cooking for generations of families. It’s nice to see and be part of that kind of loyalty. It’s great to have a business where we personally know our guests and

people are genuinely happy to be here,” notes Bernadette. Imported from Italy, masterful creations on both the lunch and dinner menus include fresh homemade thin or traditional crust pizza, classic pasta dishes and mussels. Complete with a varied wine list and classic Italian desserts, any epicurean palate is sure to be transported. Tiramisu is made from scratch with a special house recipe from the old country. “It is good old comfort food with rustic touches and generous portions that keep people coming back for years,” Bernadette remarks. But best of all, Monticchio’s also offers gluten-free options to accommodate dietary restrictions. The tightly-knit, friendly staff fosters a true family feel to the locally-owned and -operated restaurant — a culture

that extends to regulars who often recommend favourite dishes to other guests. In fact, customers often stop by the kitchen to say hello to the man who makes it all happen and the staff who work endless hours to provide highquality meals for their guests. Foodies in Winnipeg can enjoy the authentic cuisine of Italy anytime they want without the hassle of international travel. From the marinara sauce to the meatballs, homemade food is what makes Monticchio’s a passport to a fantastic meal.

NATURE MEDICINE DOCTOR

No Band-aids Here By Rebecca Henderson  Photos Shawn Fillion

magine being able to treat the root cause of a disease, rather than address the symptoms. Jason Bachewich and Mary Anne Hembroff discovered a health care profession that did just that and opened The Nature Doctors clinic in 2006. “We realized that with most problems seen in your typical family practice, MDs were prescribing band-aids for symptoms, rather than addressing the cause,” says Jason. “If it’s a chronic problem, you need to find the cause of dysfunction before you can support the body to heal itself. We treat our patients as individuals, because in order to heal, you have to look at the whole person. Two people may both have heartburn, but each may be caused by something different.”

Jason and Mary Anne met in Clear Lake as teenagers and after living in Toronto and completing eight years of post secondary education, they opened a clinic that reflects the practices and philosophy of holistic, evidence-based medicine. Jason says it was evident from the start that the public had a growing concern about prescription drugs, and was interested in taking responsibility for their own health. “Our goal in returning to Manitoba was to create a large multidisciplinary clinic that was a one stop shop for all your healthcare needs.” Growth was quick and The Nature Doctors soon found themselves a wonderful team of practitioners with specialties in almost every area of alternative healthcare.

“Seventy per cent of visits to the doctor are for chronic problems, according to the American Medical Association,” explains Jason. They admit that MDs are uniquely qualified to deal with life threatening concerns, but poorly trained for chronic disease management. “At The Nature Doctors, we are trained as primary care clinicians, but our specialty is chronic disease management and treatment.” Naturopathic doctors are also trained in pharmacology and have prescribing rights in some provinces. However, Manitoba is behind the times and NDs are quite restricted in this area, despite their training. The benefit of seeing an ND is that they understand your body just as an MD would. typically prescribed, but attempt to treat the person using a non-chemical approach whenever possible. “Sometimes it is necessary to use a drug, but the key is to minimize use and support the body through diet and nutrition to minimize the side effects.” By this fall, The Nature Doctors will have eight naturopathic doctors, two homeopathic doctors, an acupuncturist, an osteopath and one registered massage therapist, making it the largest clinic of its kind in the province. Practitioners at The Nature Doctors also specialize in pre and post-natal care, cancer care, allergies, hormonal dysfunction, inflammatory bowel diseases and sports medicine. “No matter the concern, there is someone or something available through The Nature Doctors that can help a person recover faster and feel better.” Furthermore, most insurance companies cover naturopathic doctors. There is the false belief that naturopathic doctors prescribe excessive vitamins and supplements; however, the goal is to teach individuals about their bodies so they can live a healthy life and not be dependent on anything artificial. Natural medicines are often recommended short term to quickly address a deficiency or restore function. To schedule an appointment, please call the office. Hours are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday until 8 p.m.

WHAT MAKES A COMPANY

THE BEST? By Brandi Parnell

W

e are in the fortunate position to acquaint ourselves with new businesses all the time. Regardless of whether it’s a local startup, multi-generational family owned business or a large national or multinational chain, the best businesses share consistent practices that keep their clients coming back. As the legendary Albert Enstein said, “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” Here are five traits of the best in class when it comes to business… 1. DRIVE: A team of dedicated leaders who put their customers first is an ambition that cannot be falsified. Genuine concern for unmet customer

needs by a company that delivers on its promise, in a quality manner is the basis for success. 2. CUSTOMER: Without customers, there are no great businesses. Our high achievers in this issue have sought after products or services that fill unmet customer needs. Most often these unmet needs are rooted in the company’s founder experiencing a void in a service or product. 3. FOCUS: The best businesses stay focused on what they know and do well. Our business categories in this issue show strong dedication to the respective category. The very best companies continue to grow in the area in which they excel. 4. EXECUTION: In order to have satisfied customers, businesses

must commit relentless attention to execution. Sometimes it takes numerous attempts to make things just right with each customer. At Fine Lifestyles, we know that all too well. So too do our best businesses. 5. INSPIRATION: Whatever your passion is, it is imperative that you stay inspired to be top in your field. Many of our best businesses belong to entrepreneurial organizations, they travel, they learn and they regenerate themselves so that they can remain focused on being their best. Our city is full of inspiring people who strive to be the best they can in their respective field of business. Patronize them — after all it is incredibly inspiring to be in the company of greatness.

A native of Winnipeg, McKay moved to Belgium with his parents as a teenager. While attending high school in Europe, the Canadian teen frequently skipped classes to explore the local marketplaces on his moped. McKay chuckles, “My parents would come home after work and know I hadn’t been at school. I would be

in trouble until I made them a tasty meal with the produce I had picked up in my travels to various markets.” After finishing high school, McKay embarked on a career in woodworking, pursuing it for several years before returning to Canada. Back in Winnipeg, ABOVE Chef Sean McKay

inserted a window into it so customers can see into the kitchen. McKay chose the name, The Mitchell Block, after the pharmacy that was originally situated in the 1886 building. McKay is overwhelmed by and appreciative of the hard work and support he continues to receive from everyone. “My dad helps with managing the restaurant while my mom does the bookkeeping, and my wife works in the lounge,” says McKay. “Every Sunday, the restaurant is closed so my staff and I can spend time with our families, and I cook my parents a special meal.” He continues, “My staff members are like family to me. We not only work together, but we often hang out together after work.” McKay notes all the members of his staff are as passionate about food as he is. “We love to play with different flavour combinations,” he notes. “I personally love bold tastes and rich European foods.” McKay drew upon the experiences and palettes of his staff members when putting together the menu for the restaurant, ensuring there truly is something for everyone.

he made a decision to return to his first love — cooking — and enrolled in the culinary arts program at Red River College. He worked as a chef in various restaurants in the city before purchasing the Italian eatery, Tre Visi Restaurant and Sensi Wine Lounge. McKay operated Tre Visi Restaurant for a year while simultaneously planning the restaurant of his dreams. When the time was right, using his skills as a woodworker and his talents as a chef, McKay closed down the dining establishment. In a matter of a few weeks, with the help of family, friends and staff, he transformed

the former restaurant into the The Mitchell Block — a premier restaurant and lounge whose eclectic menu features a mixture of foods from different regions of the world that have been uniquely prepared with local flavour. Located in one of the many Exchange District heritage buildings, McKay was careful to retain the historic atmosphere. “We used reclaimed wood and traditional fixtures taken from a building a few doors down,” states McKay. Among the many repurposed pieces is a large old warehouse fire door which now separates the kitchen from the dining area; McKay

Every one of The Mitchell Block’s savoury dishes is made from scratch in the restaurant, using as much local produce as possible. The meat is cut on the premises by the skillful staff. As well, all the breads, pasta and desserts are made in-house. The menu has some Italian dishes, a nod to the previous Tre Visi Restaurant — but with a Canadian spin, such as the Bison Carpaccio. The menu’s spicy saffron soup, Cioppino, was inspired by the chef’s years working in a Mediterranean restaurant; for this soup, McKay once again drew from local produce and uses pickerel in addition to the more customary seafood. Every dish comes tastefully presented by one of the restaurant’s friendly servers. Knowledgeable and attentive, their servers are happy to answer questions

and are ready and able to suggest dishes from the menu in line with your own individual tastes. Further, the experienced kitchen staff is able to accommodate all manner of dietary restrictions, including several dishes appropriate for vegans, vegetarians, celiac and those who are lactose-intolerant. One mouth-watering example is the Moroccan Chick Pea and Spinach Soup, which is both nutritious and flavourful. Above the restaurant, on the second storey of the building, is the lounge with its spectacular wine cellar. A delightful option on the menu is the wine tasting trio where you can sample three different varieties of premium wine. In addition, there are a variety of cocktails, such as Prairie Penicillin, that have been inspired by the history of the building (the second floor having been originally used as a pharmaceutical laboratory). The lounge has its own kitchen and menu featuring many dishes designed to be shared — perfect for holding private parties and receptions. Located on McDermot Avenue in the Theatre District, The Mitchell Block is ideally situated for those wanting to enjoy a great meal before a show or to partake of drinks afterwards. Despite having been open only a short while, this locally owned and operated restaurant already has several repeat customers. Chef Sean McKay invites everyone to come by and try a mouth-watering dish and creative cocktail from their new menu while enjoying the historic atmosphere of the building and the district. It will quickly become a favourite place to enjoy a delightful evening with friends and family. Their passion in production is a reflection of the devotion required to produce a world-class extra virgin olive oil. With “can’t live without products”, the staff isn’t afraid to take home and blend different flavours, creating unique combinations to enhance your favourite foods. Not only are their products compared with the finest in the world, they boast a gamut of health benefits. Recent data in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown consuming extra virgin olive oil is a key component of a healthy diet.

Fresh Product, Longer Life. As part of their commitment to quality, OLiV stores their extra virgin olive oils in oxygen free tanks; for your takehome purchase, they have developed a mechanism to remove extraneous oxygen from every bottle, ensuring the olive oil is as fresh when you open the bottle, as the day it was harvested. But that’s not all. Their dedication extends to balsamic vinegar. In an effort to source the best, they travelled to Modena, Italy where they sampled and compared balsamic vinegars from a range of major suppliers. After hand picking the highest quality product available, OLiV crafted their on proprietary recipes, which are carefully stored in their South African bottling facility; this ensures only the premium quality

vinegar makes it into your home. Recently, OLiV entered their flagship extra virgin olive oil blend, OLiV Director’s Reserve, in the prestigious New York International Olive Oil Competition to compete against the best oils in the world. In the past two competitions, they were awarded gold and doublegold awards in their category, competing against oils harvested six months later. In other words, they outperformed products that were six months fresher due to different seasons between the northern and southern hemispheres. If that’s not enough, they also sell rare extra virgin olive oils from all around the world. With the very best harvest, impeccable quality control and amazing flavours,

OLiV employs equally matched people. Their high-performing team is knowledgeable about each product they sell and committed to every customer. fixture in the heart of Osborne Village for nearly 60 years, Osborne Spectacle Centre is an iconic business.

This office was originally part of the Imperial Optical chain — a business that dominated Canada’s optical industry for many years. When Imperial dissolved, its ownership passed from manager to manager until it was eventually sold to Dr. Dawn Dunford who purchased the Osborne location in September 2005. Dunford immediately increased the retail space and doctor space by April 2006, resulting in the professional office seen today. Osborne Spectacle Centre has always been known for its fantastic selection of frames and repeat customers to prove it. Dunford says “We have return customers from several other provinces and territories, including a former Harlem Globetrotter, and even some US clients. Most recently, a doctor from Minnesota who stumbled upon our office during a visit to Winnipeg, fell in love with a pair of glasses and just flew back here just to pick them up!” Osborne Spectacle retails frames in all shapes and sizes, including designer frames from Europe and Australia. They offer Parasite frames from France, which attach to your head with little rubber feet. The Cats Eye frames all the way from Australia have actual fabric pressed into the acetate frame. EDA Frames from Portland, Oregon can manufacture custom frames with etchings and printing right on the temple, giving customers the ultimate in unique frames. However, these are just three of the dozens of suppliers available at Osborne Spectacle Centre. Dunford says, “We scour the world for frames as unique as our patients. We have

wooden frames, water buffalo horn frames, metals and plastics. Just name it — you can probably find it at Osborne. We shy away from the well-known frame companies to offer specialty products for everybody. If you want something we don’t have, we’ll certainly look for it for you!” In addition to the designer products, the office also carries a variety of economy frames. Dunford says, “The Village has residents of every economic background — it is its own little community. We carry something for people from all walks of life.” While Osborne Spectacle Centre can buy lenses from anywhere, they have partnered with Essilor Canada as their primary lens supplier. Dunford says, “Essilor is the biggest lens manufacturer in the world; they’ve got dedicated research staff, are innovative and have lenses to fit every budget. I wear Essilor lenses myself, and want only the best for my patients too.” The office has seen a few ownership changes over the years, and it will undergo another change in the near future when it changes to a Doctors Vision Centre with partner offices on Leila Avenue, Stonewall and Swan River. To schedule an eye exam, call Osborne Spectacle Centre, or if you’re in the neighbourhood, stop in to browse their amazing selection of frames. Please note that while this article appears in a “Best of the Best” edition of this magazine, to be in compliance with the Manitoba Association of Optometrists, the owner of Osborne Spectacle Centre makes no claim of their optometrists being superior to other optometrists.

uch has changed in a quarter of a century, but the friendly professional service, superb variety of available frames, array of lens choices and tremendous value at Special Eyes Vision Centre has remained the same. A trusted business for 25 years, Special Eyes has seen a few ownership changes and a minor name change in 2008. This November, as they celebrate their 25th anniversary, they will become Doctors Vision Centre, with partner offices in Osborne Village, Stonewall and Swan River. The facility, owned by Dr. Dawn Dunford since February, 2013 has one primary optometrist — Dr. Stephen Mazur. Dunford says, “There are optical offices that sell glasses and happen to have a doctor onsite, and there are doctor’s offices that happen to sell glasses — that’s what we are. This difference is one the patient has to experience for themselves.” Special Eyes offers a complete comprehensive eye exam starting with a large pretest area, which continues in a modern exam room, equipped to accommodate patients in wheelchairs. If more testing is required, there is a Visual Fields Machine and an OCT on the premises. For patients who need glasses to correct a vision problem, Special Eyes has hundreds of frames to choose from, ranging from economy frames for patients with a limited budget, right up to premium frames for those who want to make a personalized fashion statement. In keeping with their doctors’ theme, Dunford is quick to point out she considers your lens choice more important than your frame choice. She adds, “You can look good in a cheap frame, or an expensive

frame, but the most important thing is the lenses which ensure good eye health.” While Special Eyes can buy lenses from anywhere, they have partnered with Essilor Canada as their primary lenses supplier. Dunford says, “Essilor is the biggest lens manufacturer in the world with dedicated research staff. They are innovative and have lenses to accommodate every budget. I wear Essilor lenses myself, and want only the best for my patients too.” For patients who don’t require corrective lenses, Special Eyes have a selection of non-prescription sunglasses. Dunford notes, “Sunglasses are more than a fashion statement; they can be your eyes’ first line of defence against sun damage and many eye diseases. I have heard as much as 75 per cent of future vision problems can be attributed to sun damage, so protect your eyes!” Even though Special Eyes is changing their name in the near future, the staff and management commit to providing top eye care. “We vow to continue to do our best to help you take care of your vision health. After all, you only get one set of eyes — take good care of them!” To schedule an eye exam, or to schedule a good time to stop by and browse their frames, call Special Eyes at 204.338.7867. hen someone requires orthodontic care and undergoes treatment, the results are life changing. Patients often meet us with a shy and self-conscious attitude but by working with them to create their beautiful smile it is amazing how they transform. It is the best part of being an orthodontist, working with people in helping them achieve a beautiful smile and the confidence that comes with it. It is known that orthodontic treatment is a substantial financial investment, and though we strive to create payment plans that are suitable for our patients, the fact is that for some, this is not possible. We feel strongly that everyone who can benefit from orthodontic treatment should have that opportunity, we are excited to announce that we have joined with other orthodontists in Winnipeg to start the Smile for a Lifetime: Manitoba Chapter! Smile for a lifetime Foundation is a charitable non-profit organization that provides orthodontic care to children and teens who may not have the chance otherwise due to their financial or familial situations. Launched in 2008, Smile for a Lifetime Foundation aims to reach

individuals with financial challenges, special situations and orthodontic needs. The Foundation sponsors the orthodontic care of hundreds of patients annually. Smiles for a Lifetime Foundation has participating orthodontists throughout the US and Canada. It is our mission to foster self-confidence, inspire hope, and change the lives of children in our community in a dramatic way. The gift of a smile can be a pivotal moment in someone’s life - to better themselves and our community. Along with orthodontists and specialists in Winnipeg, we have created a board of twelve professionals in all areas of expertise who are graciously giving their time to make this program possible in Manitoba. The Board will be responsible for assessing applications and approving cases for treatment. We are so grateful for all who have graciously offered their time and services to make this chapter possible. Applications for candidates can be found on the Manitoba Orthodontic Society website at www.mbbraces.com . We are excited to spread the news of this great opportunity to our city and province.

For me, something did give: I found an opportunity to help those who also felt the pressure of ‘getting it all done’ and got more balance in my own life.” Besides her personal concierge services, Farago also operates as a personal assistant, doing product research, organizing information for filing taxes and much more. “I feel it’s really important to ask questions and get the smallest details clarified when I’m working,” says Farago. “Whether you need someone to declutter your office or just have too much on your plate from time-to-time, I’m your go-to girl.” My Little Secret 204.992.9421 sheila@mylittlesecret.ca www.mylittlesecret.ca

With just two weeks before the event, Schroeder didn’t know where to turn for help. “After a few phone calls and no luck, I was starting to get frustrated,” he says. “Then someone told me about My Little Secret.” The concierge service, run by Sheila Farago, offers a myriad of services, including shopping, running errands, bringing groceries to an elderly relative and organizing special events. Schroeder met with Farago to discuss the plans and his stress level diminished drastically. “She made wonderful suggestions and led the way for us,” says Schroeder. When the big day arrived, about 60 relatives attended the dedication ceremony, which was a hit. “It was the most perfect day for our family,” says Schroeder. “It was entirely without a hiccup, except for one thing — it was pouring buckets and it didn’t let up all day. The clinic offers their patients a number of up to date technologies and services. A treatment that will soon be making its way to the clinic is a micro needling procedure. By creating small punctures in the skin, it restarts the body’s natural healing mechanisms to help with wrinkles, scars and even stretch marks. Lawndromat Lawn Care is a family-run company. Witten is an entrepreneur at heart, and his expertise comes from a long career working in horticulture and landscaping. The company is operated from the south side of the city, and they try to provide the best service they can, giving their customers peace of mind for healthy lawns. Their punctual and professional staff takes care to leave your yard looking its best when you return home. Locally owned and operated, The Lawndromat cares about their customers, and provide a 100 per cent satisfaction guarantee.

he first thing that comes to mind when we think of the fall is the changing colour of leaves that transforms the lush greenery into an autumn paradise. Once those leaves fall to the ground though, autumn can be a lot of work. Free time is precious, but ignoring yard work isn’t an option if you don’t want to damage your deck or gutters. That’s where Lawndromat Lawn Care comes in. Lawndromat Lawn Care offers yearround lawn care and yard maintenance in Winnipeg and across Manitoba for residential and commercial clients. This small, locally-owned company is licensed and insured. They offer fall cleanup services, leaf removal, aeration, gutter cleaning, snow removal, as well as monthly and weekly service plans for those who want regular maintenance. They will even take loads to the garbage dump upon request.

To assess the work required, owner Kurt Martin A. Witten or one of his crew will come out to your property to provide an estimate. For added convenience and the most economical solution, their monthly plans include mowing, garbage and debris pickup, deck and driveway clearing. They will even check for any damaged or disease problems on your property.

Witten and his crew have a few pieces of advice to homeowners when it comes to healthy lawns. •

Leave grass trimmings on the lawn after mowing to provide extra nutrients and additional water to the freshly-cut grass. Mow your lawn frequently so the grass grows straight. For spring cleanups, make sure your lawn is dry before you let anyone on your property or you can damage the grass before it even gets a chance to grow for the season.

They offer landscaping services upon request, which includes bed maintenance, planting and watering, and weed control throughout the yard and along your driveway.

They also offer snow removal services 24/7, and have seasonal, monthly or occasional snow removal contracts that vary depending on the size of the driveway. In fact, they will even remove the snow from your rooftop.

For the past 11 years, Allan Asplin and his team have worked hard to alleviate the uncertainties of selling a home with their Guaranteed Sold Program in two simple steps for the seller. 1. The seller and listing specialist agree on a price and a deadline. 2. If the Judy Lindsay Team doesn’t sell the home at the agreed upon price by the deadline, they will buy it. It’s that simple. The price and the deadline are determined up front because every situation is different. Each scenario depends on the client’s situation. Team Leader Allan Asplin says, “We have had some clients take our guarantee within a week, but typically we guarantee clients houses sold within 90 days.”

SucceSS Story Last spring, a St. James couple with a growing family made a decision to buy a larger home. Over a period of four months they looked at more than 40 listings. Finally they found their dream home and were thrilled when their offer was accepted. Their excitement turned to despair when the bank informed them that the purchase couldn’t proceed unless they sold their current home. Using their proven system, the Judy Lindsay Team went to work and got a guaranteed sold letter to the bank within 12 hours…saving the purchase of their dream home!

The benefits of a program like this are more than peace of mind it also affords the home owner the ability to buy their next home knowing theirs will be sold—no matter what—with a written offer, 24 hours after listing. “The majority of people can’t buy their next home without selling their current one,” says Asplin. “Our Guaranteed Sold Program eliminates the uncertainty of whether to sell first or buy first.” The Judy Lindsay Team is all about providing their clients with more options. In the past, homebuyers were able to buy their next home with a conditional offer; unfortunately, in today’s market it’s more difficult to have an offer accepted when it’s conditional on the sale of their existing home. “We have clients who call us and say they have found their dream home,” says Asplin. “But are unable to move forward because they can’t get financing until they sell their existing home”. With professional guidance, a team approach and the Guaranteed Sold Program, the Judy Lindsay Team gives their clients the freedom to buy condition free, which means a stronger negotiating position and the ability to beat out competing offers. In addition to the Guaranteed Sold Program, every seller has access to a handyman service, free staging, as well as cleaning and/or junk removal. “Ultimately the end goal is to make buying or selling a home an enjoyable experience and put more dollars in our clients’ pocket,” he says. Asplin’s mom, Judy Lindsay, started the Team concept in 1995, and since then, has become one of the most successful real estate teams in North America. The award-winning Judy Lindsay Team Realty is comprised of 16 professionals, including: specialized buyer agents, listing agents and office staff. A New Kind of Salon Experience

SALON

By Colors Beauty and Wellness  Photography BTL Wedding

urturing inner and outer beauty has never been easier or healthier thanks to a vibrant and vital space that is transforming the salon experience. Nestled in the heart of Fort Garry, Colors Beauty and Wellness is a full service salon dedicated to exceptional customer service in an earth-friendly environment. “We believe our salon is not just a place to come to,” says owner Joanne Rempel. “It’s a place to come back to.” After 30 years in the business, Joanne knew the industry was saturated with products harmful to humans and the environment. She also knew that while she may not be able to influence the beauty industry globally, she could do something locally in her own salon. The award-winning stylist spent more than a decade researching the toxicity of products; her salon carries only lines based in Certified Organic Pharmaceutical grade aloe or have reduced harmful effects on the environment. Her search for quality products that protect the earth led her to Eufora International; a California-based company that has built its brand on providing top performance, people and planet-friendly hair care

“We choose healthier alternatives, because we believe in the health and safety of our team and our guests.” says Joanne products. “The Eufora line is second to none,” says Joanne. “From the quality, environmentally-friendly botanicals to the no-petroleum formulations, their products deliver consistent, superior results.” She adds that Colors offers new clients a complimentary Eufora Experience — hair treatment, a relaxing scalp massage and a wash and style — so they can become familiar with the salon staff and Eufora products. “Most guests are fearful to try out a new salon, and we understand that,” she says. Her credentials as a visionary colourist prompted a further partnership with Eufora when she was invited to Italy to assist the company in the development of their new, high-performance colour line. EuforaColor is a premium product with minimal negative impact, says Joanne. Its unique formula allows stylists to custom mix colours that are vibrant and long-lasting. “It’s great for grey coverage,” she adds. “Even target shades like reds and coppers are saturated, rich colours.” Guests notice their hair feels softer and looks shinier immediately after the first treatment. The marriage of beauty and wellness is equally important in other salon services. The talented staff offers manicures, facials, makeup applications, and a variety of wellness treatments. Recently, Colors added two special services to its esthetics line. • Body Ritual Massage is a deep tissue massage that cleanses, lifts, firms, balances energy and purges toxins. • Therapeutic Facial Massage, ideal for mature skin, will help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. “Our team can design the look you want to feel rejuvenated and radiant,” says Joanne. “Our goal is exceed your expectations with exceptional guest service.” Read more about Joanne’s hair and beauty tips at www.modernsalon.com Colors Beauty and Wellness 1072 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg 204.477.9723 colors@mymts.net www.colorsforhair.com

By Melanie Furlong Photos BTL Wedding

The women and men of Winnipeg know where to go for the ultimate spa and shopping indulgence: SpaLifestyle & Fashion Boutique.

“Whether you’re looking for that perfect dress, accessory or perhaps a gift for someone special, knowledgeable women are always available to assist you at SpaLifestyle & Fashion Boutique,” says Client Stefanie Frischbutter says. “From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by the friendly owners or staff and made to feel welcome and at ease.”

eing pampered by professionally trained staff in their spa is a luxury worth every penny. “I have enjoyed a variety of facials and it is difficult to say if one is better than another — they’re all incredible,” says Frischbutter. “Massages have also been an experience worth repeating often. Total pampering and relaxation has always been a highlight at SpaLifestyle & Fashion Boutique and I would highly recommend this store to anyone looking for a quality shopping and spa experience.” Sisters Kristin Bozyk (nee Janzen) and Monica Janzen opened SpaLifestyle & Fashion Boutique in December 2007 after their parents encouraged them to go into business for themselves. “We were inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of our grandparents, John and Mary Fehr and our parents, Dale and Sandra Janzen,” says Bozyk. “They founded and operated Fehr-Way Tours and Beaver Bus Lines.”

When they discovered the building at 2001 Henderson Hwy was being built, their mother gave them the idea to start a spa combined with a boutique. Bozyk, who was a registered massage therapist, took on the spa side while her sister headed up the fashion boutique. The unusual combination has been a winning success. The spa meets the highest standards in the country as a member of Leading Spas in Canada and is quality assured. “Our licensed and certified estheticians use exceptional G.M. Collin products for facial treatments,” says Bozyk. “This medical grade product line can be used to treat many skin conditions.” They also use France’s world-renowned brand, Yon-ka, to offer customized treatments using essential oils and plant extracts.

One of their most popular facials is G.M. Collin’s new SEA C Spa. This brightening facial is perfect for people preparing for special events, such as weddings. It evens out skin tone, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and illuminates skin — giving it the ultimate healthy glow. Besides their remarkable facials, the spa menu also includes manicures, pedicures, scrubs, microdermabrasion and relaxing massages. All services are performed in one of their six private rooms. The spa also has two couples’ rooms, for those who wish to share quality time with a friend or loved one. “Our spa clients are women and men who take care of themselves and want to feel good,” says Bozyk. “They come here for a quality experience; we want them to leave feeling confident.”

The spa has had clients as young as age six (children getting manicures with their moms) and as elderly as 96. “We try to take care of our clients as if they were family,” says Bozyk. “A spa treatment is something any generation can enjoy.” Every month the spa has a new special offer. Clients on the SpaLifestyle & Fashion Boutique email list are the first to find out about new offers. You can also like them on Facebook to view upcoming fashions as they arrive for the new season. “We have a beautiful facility and we have high standards for ourselves and our professional team in the spa and boutique, who are always very polite, and caring,” says Bozyk. “We’re doing our best.” What could be better than getting a fabulous shellac mani and a gorgeous new ring to show it off? Both Bozyk and Janzen are having a great time with their Fashion Boutique. “It’s an added bonus

Sizes range from 2 to 18. Their fashion includes lines like Joseph Ribkoff, which they have carried since they opened. “This is our No. 1 line,” says Janzen, “it’s made to fit a real woman’s body.” This fall, SpaLifestyle & Fashion Boutique is planning to hold another in-store fashion show for clients. “This season we’re

going to see more sheerness and transparency from Joseph Ribkoff, as well as laser cut detailing and monochromatic tones of black and white,” says Janzen. “We’ll do another show to help our clients see what the latest trends are in store. A lot of ladies really enjoy this concept.” To complement your new outfit, check out the unique jewellery from Shablool Silver Jewellery Design Ltd., an Israeli brand creating distinctive rings, earrings, bracelets, pendant necklaces, watches and pins by combining sterling silver 925 with semi-precious stones and 14k gold. Two A is another beautiful in-store jewellery brand that puts a fresh spin on Bohemian chic by fusing materials such as coral, textiles, tagua and coconut shells with a variety of finely crafted metals that works with every day and high-fashion styles. If you’re in need of a gift for someone special, SpaLifestyle & Fashion Boutique sells gift cards that can be used any way you wish. “You can buy a specific service or put a dollar

amount on the gift card,” says Bozyk. “Then the recipient can buy clothes, jewellery, spa products or treatments. It gives them lots of options for pampering themselves.” These are all reasons why what started out as a neighbourhood jewel has become a destination for men and women around the city and beyond. “When people come to visit Winnipeg, they have to check this place out,” says Bozyk. “We’ve had customers come from P.E.I., all over Ontario, B.C., and other places.” At the end of the day, the sisters get the most enjoyment out of working with people. “We get great satisfaction from giving our customers the best possible experience,” says Janzen.

TAN

The Allure of a

SUN-KISSED

GLOW By Courtney Tait Photos BTL Wedding

M

ost of us look and feel better when we have a natural looking, sun-kissed glow. But getting that glow through exposure to the sun or in tanning beds that mimic the sun can be harmful, with damage from UVA and UVB rays linked to skin cancer. At Alluring Glow, Winnipeg’s only studio dedicated solely to airbrush tanning, clients leave with a tan that lasts five to 10 days, takes less than 10 minutes to apply, and is made from 100 per cent natural ingredients. “People are shocked by how natural it looks,” says Alluring Glow’s owner Lauren Krawchuk. Opened in April, Alluring Glow uses a spray tan made by SunFX, an Australian company that specializes in all-natural tanning alternatives. While many spray tans are made with up to 40 ingredients, the SunFX solution is made with only three ingredients: highly-purified water, dihydroxyacetone (DHA, a colourless sugar that reacts within your skin) and natural bronzers to create a rich, natural looking tan. The spray tan is FDA approved and free of alcohols, preservatives, oils, perfumes, and parabens. “It’s a great product,” says Lauren. “There is no smell, and it can go on with a light coat, so it dries fast.” The Alluring Glow studio is a private, comfortable space, with only one client session at a time. Clients consult with Lauren on three different colour options (with three shade levels available for each); together they choose the most suitable colour and level based on skin tone and current tan. The natural tones of the

164

colours ensure that clients don’t leave with the orange-tinted skin created by some spray tans on the market. Lauren applies the spray tan by hand with an airbrush gun, a process that takes place in a three-sided tent. Clients undress to however they feel comfortable. “Everyone has different bodies, and there is no judgement,” she says. “With a massage therapist, there are muscles that need to be worked. This is just skin that needs to be tanned.” Lauren says clients who initially felt nervous to remove their clothing have told her she makes them feel very comfortable. She instructs them on how to move while she is applying the spray tan, and within five to 10 minutes, they have a full-body glow. “I always tell people to look at their tan line,” says Lauren. “At first they don’t actually realize how dark they are because it’s so natural.”

Ideal for special occasions such as weddings, parties, or holidays, Alluring Glow spray tan is already drawing repeat clients impressed by the ease and comfort of the experience with natural-looking results. Lauren has served everyone from women in their mid-twenties to late 70s. Along with the spray tan service, Alluring Glow features sunglasses, jewellery and a body scrub that can be applied before and after the spray tan. “I like that I can give people an option that’s not endangering them,” says Lauren. “Everyone leaves my business feeling good.”

t is often said first impressions are lasting impressions. At Torino Tile & Stone, their main focus is on that first impression having a lasting effect. Starting with a genuine “Hello” when you walk in the door, to the fully personalized service you’ll receive throughout the process, nothing is more important than “Your Project”. Their goal is for you to have complete satisfaction with the products you chose, as well as the option for quality, professional installation or all the knowledge you need to DIY. Connection to customers is what inspired owners Sandra Nelson and husband Wayne Smith to purchase the business four years ago. “It’s hard to find good

customer service in this day and age,” says Sandra. “It’s getting so that it [customer service] is seen as a ‘Luxury Item,’ but this is always a standard practice for us.” In today’s busy lifestyles it can be overwhelming trying to narrow down options with the amount of products available and technicalities involved in tiling, but Sandra and Wayne’s priority is to make the process simple for their clients.

Award Recognition Their perseverance has paid off. So much so, Torino Tile has won the Consumer Choice Award — a customer satisfaction award — every year since purchasing the business.

Sandra and Wayne are not alone in their dedication — the genuine friendliness and exceptional service standard extends to their team. They are committed to staying on top of industry trends and new and innovative installation materials. “Our customers constantly tell us our sales team is so knowledgeable and a joy to work with,” Sandra says. “We also receive glorious praise about our long-term lead installer Brennan. “It’s not just the quality of his workmanship and attention to detail, but also how personable he is with people. His tidy work habits and respectful manner in their homes is something they truly appreciate.” In the seven years he has been with the company, they have not received a

I try to guide a person to install something that not only reflects their lifestyle, but also has staying power with style and quality. It’s a permanent structure in your home, it’s important to choose something you will still love in five to 10 years.” Torino Tile & Stone 5 -3 St. Mary’s Road 204.233.4148 www.torinotile.com

Top Notch Customer Service and Industry Expertise Although Torino Tile has highly skilled installers who look after the process from start to finish, some people would like to do the installation process themselves. Sandra cannot stress enough the importance of using the proper setting materials for a perfect installation. Using the wrong setting materials, especially in a wet area, can be disastrous,” says Sandra. “Consumers will often spend good money on quality tiles and make the mistake of using poor quality setting materials, when in reality the setting materials play just as an important role as the tile. Setting materials have come a long way and using quality products will greatly extend the life of your installation and add more value.”

Torino Tile & Stone supplies everything you need for your project. From setting and waterproofing materials, in-floor heat systems, tools, granite & quartz countertops, they are a one-stop tiling shop. “We also carry many specialty grouts, such as self-sealing, waterproof, stain, crack and mildew-proof, ” says Sandra. “Advanced technology in grout has virtually eliminated the problems associated with grouts in the past.”

Torino Tile is currently looking for quality individuals to join their team, please visit their website for current positions available.

With the showroom expansion in 2011, they have more than 5,000 in store samples to choose from, and access to thousands more if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for. “The options available with tile today are endless,” Sandra says. “We can also customize specialty mosaics — bring me a picture and we can recreate it in tile.” Every year, Torino Tile attends the North American Tile Convention, which offers a wealth of information and insight to what’s new and upcoming. She notes, “We also frequently visit our suppliers throughout

ffering fine wines and delicious food, Piazza De Nardi is a unique combination of a boutique wine store, La Boutique Del Vino, and a gourmet Mediterranean food market, La Grotta. With comfortable price points and more variety than the average wine store, La Boutique Del Vino can provide you with the perfect pairing of wine and food to bring home and impress even the most discerning connoisseurs.

176

FineLifestyles

WINNIPEG

La Boutique Del Vino is a family-owned wine boutique in Winnipeg with a vast selection of wines from all over the world, including many famous exclusive brands such as Cliff Lede and Zenato. The independent store offers personal service from experienced and dedicated staff, including four professional sommeliers on site. La Boutique del Vino staff never hesitates to give a wine recommendation based on the knowledge of their products.

“With the wine store, passion comes through in every part of the business,” says Maria De Nardi, CEO of Mondo Foods Group of Companies and owner of La Boutique. “Everyone who comes in to work here is genuinely happy to come in, eager to please and do a good job.” Stepping in the door makes you feel like you are entering a modern day Tuscan market, complete with a gelato bar to greet you as you walk in. “The store brings cooking, food and wine

together in a simplistic style, which is the Mediterranean way,” De Nardi says. A big part of their business is wine education; they offer wine pairing events, cooking and classes, and wine tastings in their two private Italian inspired rooms upstairs. The newest attraction at the store is the Tuscany room, which features a stateof-the-art demo kitchen to offer more unique dining experiences with some of Winnipeg’s top chefs. These rooms are available for corporate or private parties, as well as their regularly scheduled events. Their demo kitchen has a winetasting bar that can accommodate 10 people, and often have chefs host the events to pair the wines with food they cook on site, giving the guests the unique opportunity to cook with the best. Every second Friday night features a theme known as the “Friday Night Flights”, a wine-tasting event featuring a pairing of six wines with cheese — known as a flight. They offer a Wine Club, with new wines carefully selected for members each month and delivered right to their door. La Boutique Del Vino blends unique service with a personal touch. In 1971, Maria and Ugo De Nardi started their company with the shared vision to bring a Mediterranean food and wine experience to Manitoba.
