I

have always been a list maker, a goal setter, a lover of Manitoba summers. I take pride in aspiring to be more, do more, stretch more. And so it comes as no surprise that our Best of the Best issue is one of my favourites to see come together. After all, who doesn’t want to align themselves with the very best Winnipeg has to offer?

Our cover story is all about what’s under foot with the dynamic team at Friesen Floor and Decor. Sure to inspire you, flooring has become a key element in home décor and fashion. Sam Keen said, “Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.” So go ahead and give yourself permission to be lazy. In this issue, we look at life from the outdoors with new libations, breezy attire and life from the 50-yard line with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Enjoy Winnipeg! Whether you find yourself at the lake, on the deck or curled up in a tent beneath the stars, be sure to align yourself with the best summer has to offer.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Y

oga is definitely top of mind in the world of fitness these days as a way to work out the kinks of every day life. More than the physical applications of the practice, yoga is a way of life. Although it is not known exactly when yoga first began, we do know it originated in India more than 5000 years ago. For many, yoga is a way to relieve stress and restore balance, but true yogis practice for reasons both on and off the mat. In fact, it is proven that yoga teaches its students to take slower, deeper breaths — a life strategy for remaining calm and staying ‘in the moment.’ Moreover, yoga increases a person’s ability to be in tune with his or her body, heart and environment. Yogis believe in taking care of their physical and mental selves, but also in taking care of the world in which they live. It is a language of respect that has beautiful benefits. “The success of yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships.” T.K.V. Desikachar

The Studio If you are new to the practice, there are many different facilities in which to try out a class. From civic offering to hot studios, earthy independents and posh places, yoga is affordable and accessible in a gamut of ways. In fact, for those less brave, yoga DVDs or online videos are a comfortable approach to doing downward dog in you living room.

The Class Types Of course, there are many types of classes growing constantly with popularity and creativity. Yoga has been blended with Pilates, ballet and even resistance training involving weights. To keep traditional yogis from running for the hills, here is a look at some of the more popular types of convention yoga.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Ashtanga and Power Yoga This type of practice focuses on six established and strenuous pose sequences. Not recommended for beginners, this yoga is for those seeking a challenge.

Bikram Practiced in a very hot room — nearly 105 degrees with 40 per cent humidity — Bikram is named after inventor Bikram Choudhury. Each class is a series of 26 basic yoga postures, each performed twice.

Hatha A perfect entrance into yoga, Hatha is one of six original branches of yoga. Hatha encompasses nearly all varieties of modern yoga and is flow free, meaning a slower, gentler class.

Kundalini An invigorating series of poses meant to fire up the body and strengthen the mind, Kundalini yoga is an awakening practice meant to draw out your inner warrior.

Iyengar Named after purist yogi B.K.S. Iyengar, this style of yoga is ideal for the injuryprone, as it incorporates props such as blocks, straps, harnesses and incline boards to help students ease into poses.

Yin Yoga The perfect way to finish off a long day at the office, a stressful project or a week spent editing a beautiful magazine, Yin is a quiet, meditative yoga practice also called taoist yoga.

The Purpose Whatever your reason, yoga is a vehicle to better health, spiritual satisfaction and a long pause in shavasan. Yoga is very accepting and non-judgmental; it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. So put on some comfy clothes, grab your mat and lean into wellness, one stretch at a time.

hen you come to Hypnotic Salon and Spa, there are many ways to relax and rejuvenate yourself. Have your hair done in the Aveda salon or treat yourself to a massage or an esthetic service in the spa. You’ll receive excellent service in a friendly atmosphere where people remember your name. The high-touch service in the salon is sure to help you de-stress. From the moment you come in and are served a calming Aveda tea you can begin to relax. One of their seven highly trained stylists will consult with you on the style you want and discuss how its maintenance will fit into your lifestyle. You’ll be offered a fabulous shoulder massage before heading to the sink for an amazing scalp massage and shampoo. “If you’re waiting for your colour to process, you’ll be offered a hand massage,” says co-owner Susan Boulet. “All of this is included in the price of your haircut and the prices are competitive with others in the city. This is the Aveda difference — it’s a holistic way of doing hair.” The trendy, but down-to-earth hair salon, offers everything from balayage colouring for a natural sun-kissed look to updos for special occasions like weddings and graduations. The salon uses Aveda products exclusively on everyone — children, men and women. Moving from the upbeat and fun atmosphere of the salon to the quietness of the spa, Hypnotic Salon and Spa’s massage therapists work in three large rooms designed to relax in. Candles, dimmed lights, heated table pads and softly playing spa music make this a wonderful atmosphere to receive an expert treatment. Therapeutic, Swedish, sports massage, pregnancy massage, hot stone massage and myofascial release are just a few of the styles they can do for a wide range of purposes, from relaxation to treating injuries. They also offer couples massages in their doubles treatment room if you’d like to relax with a loved one. The spa now has five registered therapists and one nonregistered therapist on staff. “Having a non-registered massage therapist on staff is a great feature, especially for those who do not have insurance coverage for massage,” says co-owner Lori Miller. “She offers lower pricing and does a great massage.” Miller and Boulet are in fact both registered massage therapists who met during their training. While it’s quite rare to see two therapists run a salon spa, the pair decided to put all three elements together because they are passionate about using Aveda. Since the late 1970s, Aveda has been an ecologicallythinking company dedicated to holistic beauty. Their products, made with pure flower and plant essences, continue to improve and are the pinnacle of social responsibility.

Hypnotic Salon and Spa staff keep their Aveda education up-to-date by attending conferences and seminars. Last year, they attended a conference in Niagara Falls where they learned about new trends and techniques. “One of the newest trends is to have your esthetician customize your facial onsite,” says Miller. “This keeps it low-stress for you and your esthetician provides you with the treatment your skin requires.” Whatever treatment you receive in the spa, whether it’s a facial or a three-week shellac manicure, your esthetician will provide you with their own personal touch and great service. They’ll never leave your side. While your face is being steamed, your hands or feet will be massaged. And every product used on your skin comes from Aveda. On July 27, Hypnotic Salon and Spa staff organized and is hosting a big gala for Butterfly Project at The Shark Club. To raise funds and awareness of women suffering from abuse, Hypnotic Salon and Spa has created a calendar featuring women who’ve been through it. “We did makeovers on the women for the calendar and now we’re selling them,” says Miller. “All the proceeds go to Butterfly Project.” Ninety per cent of all women have been abused at one point and the cause is dear to both Boulet and Miller. The event will feature The Wonderist Chris Funk and hypnotist Matao. “The calendar has been a big project for us and we’re excited about the event,” Miller says. But the salon’s biggest point of pride has been in creating a tight-knit family and successful business. Operating Hypnotic Salon and Spa has been a dream come true for Miller and Boulet. “We risked everything to open,” says Miller. “But after eight years, we’ve watched the business mature and grow and we’re ready to continue growing and welcoming new clients through our doors.” Hypnotic Salon Spa 120-1600 Kenaston Blvd., Winnipeg 204.475.3668 hypnoticsalonspa.ca

A cream too heavy in oil for your skin type may result in clogged pores, causing acne. You may have even tried to mix up your own natural invention using a variety of oils, lanolin and glycerin. wo local inventors are looking to change the way North Americans eat dinner. While travelling to Asia on business, Winnipegers Barry Belog and Phil Poetker were taken aback by the differences in diet and the correlation in physical stature of its people. Typical meals included not just one vegetable as a side dish but a variety of veggies. Meat portions were smaller and the average person was far more fit. Realizing a need back home, the two men with creative bent set to work. After three years of product development and a plan to reach consumers mainly through social media outlets, they were set to introduce

the Nutrigrill not just to Canadian families but also to the world. The Nutrigrill is a 13-inch ceramic-surface electric grill crafted after a healthy ancient cooking technique used for thousands of years in the East. “It has been an interesting and challenging process but incredibly satisfying. Ultimately, we are changing the way families view food,” says Poetker. Partnering with the best people in their respective fields, Nutrigrill aligned with gourmet goddess Donatella Arpaia, Iron Chef judge and celebrity New York restaurateur, and Brett Hoebel, fitness expert and trainer on The Biggest Loser.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Together this talented team shared a vision — better food choices made easier equates to a better quality of life. It’s that simple. In fact, many of the meals cooked on the Nutrigrill do not extend beyond 350 to 450 calories. Equipped with a lower moat for steaming vegetables and a high temperature dome for grilling meats, this two-tiered grill has dinner ready simultaneously, in one dish. Step 1: Add your broth. Anything from water infused with flavour trickled down from the top tier to homemade bone broth works. Add spices, wine, and gourmet oils. Try coconut milk, beer broth, or just about anything you can think of.

Step 2: Add your veggies. Onions, garlic, broccoli, carrots, celery, sweet potatoes, bok choy, kale, beets, daikon, egg plant, asparagus, peppers – even fresh herbs enhance the experience. Poetker adds, “Don’t be shy, nothing is offside; 10-plus veggies is normal in our home.” Step 3: Add your meat or tofu. From fresh seafood such as wild salmon or tiger prawns to steak and chicken, why not try them them all? Top with cracked black pepper, sea salt or fresh garlic — anything goes. Poetker suggests having fresh fruit included in the meal prep to snack on while dining. By customizing your meal, you can create one feast for everyone. WINE NOT?

California Dreaming By Sean Dolenuck, Sommelier CAPS (ASI) Manitoba’s Best Sommelier 2015 La Boutique del Vino

T

here’s something majestic about Manitoba summers, especially days watching the sun set over one of our many bodies of water. What better compliment to a tranquil setting than finding the perfect wines to enjoy with family and friends, over great barbecue evenings. For our summer issue, we look to the west coast to fill our glasses with sunny Chardonnays. Throw a few racks of ribs on the barbecue while sipping a sinful Zinfandel or be bold with both by serving New York steaks alongside a full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. No matter what you are in the mood for, California has everything you have been longing for. Californian winemaking began in 1769, initially producing wines for sacramental purposes. There has been much development in the past 246 years with many high points for the industry but also some low times. The greatest impact to the California wine industry was the Judgement of Paris, in 1976. In that year, Stag’s Leap and Chateau Montelena from the Napa Valley changed everything, beating first class French wines in a blind tasting competition for both red and white categories. Suddenly all eyes were on the sunny state to see what could materialize. Some events that have impacted the region are earthquakes, extreme weather conditions, water shortages and economic shifts.

22

FineLifestyles

WINNIPEG

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

For this issue, we look to a few mid-priced wines from the Golden State. Keeping in mind that vintages also play a role in price determination, California is going to show why years 2012 through 2014 are exceptional and worth every penny. Wagner Family of Wines (WFW) have been pioneers in Napa Valley, producing wines since 1915 and yielding some of California’s top wines, including Caymus, Mer Soleil, Conundrum, Belle Glos and Meiomi. One of the strategies WFW employs is consistent pricing with other U.S. markets. If only our dollar could stay at parity, we could reap the import rewards. WFW shows dedication as a top quality producer by understanding and factoring economic shifts to do what they are able to soften the grape crush. Even though we may see higher prices, these wines represent quality and finesse, and will showcase the pure and distinct fruit that makes California wines more than dreamy.

Nothing beats a tropical fruit driven Chardonnay. Mer Soleil is rich with oak and butterscotch. $41.99 at specialty wine stores. For a fresh, crisp and un-oaked version with tangerine, Meyer lemon and bright acidity, open a bottle of Mer Soleil Silver Chardonnay. $28.99 MB Liquor Marts. For a deep, rich and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon that provides cinnamon spiked cherries, cassis, and sweet charred oak with present and persistent tannins, splurge for a bottle of Caymus Napa Valley. $99.99 MB Liquor Marts. A soft and velvety Merlot delivering plum, blackberry, cherry, and baking spices is found in California’s first biodynamic — the highest level of organic farming — winery Benziger. $29.99 at specialty stores. Liberty School produces a Syrah with juicy and jammy fruits showcasing cherry, blueberry and black pepper spice. $19.99 MB Liquor Marts.

Here’s my suggestion for a wine flight from some of California’s best producers.

Finally, Gnarly Head Zinfandel is a big rich red wine with black fruits sure to hold its own at your next dinner on the deck party with everything served saucy! $16.99 MB Liquor Marts.

Shine with a sparkling wine. Mumm Napa Brut Prestige delivers elegant mousse with vanilla, citrus and melon. $22.49 MB Liquor Marts.

This summer “Wine Not” chase a sunset with Chardonnays or grill meat all night long with Cabernets from the west coast? Go ahead — waken your California dream.

LOVE MADE VISIBLE in Authentic Ukrainian Food By Brook Thalgott Photos Brittany Jill Photography

stellia’s Ukrainian Comfort Food, located just outside the city in Dugald, is truly a labour of love. “Estellia’s is named after my baba, Estellia,” says co-owner Cynthia Belbas. “She was an amazing cook. We often told her she could make a business from her cooking.” A tragic car accident took Estellia, known as Stella, in January 2014. From that loss came Estellia’s Ukrainian Comfort Food. The family-owned retail shop and catering company grew from Estellia’s love of cooking and her talent in the kitchen. All recipes used at the shop are hers. It has become a real joy to share Estellia’s wonderful Ukrainian delights with every customer.

The menu features authentic Ukrainian dishes. You’ll find homemade cheese and potato perogies (varenyky), cabbage rolls (holobchi), sauerkraut buns (pereshki), homemade garlic pork kulbassa, pork smokies, pork kubba burgers and beet borscht. The in-house soups change daily and there are plenty of sandwiches and veggie platters. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, they have that, too. Sweet treats abound with poppy seed cake, cinnamon buns, strawberry cheesecake strudel and blueberry crumble, not to mention the to-die-for muffins, cookies and fruit platters. “We do everything just the way my mother did,” says co-owner Valerie Charkewycz, Estellia’s daughter and

Cynthia’s mother. “Her cooking was just too good to keep a secret.” No matter what you find in-store, it’s prepared fresh daily. You can pick up any of the menu items to take home and prepare yourself or you can have it made up for ready-to-eat takeout in single or family-sized orders. “If you call us in the morning, we can have your supper warm and ready for pick-up at the end of the day,” says Belbas. Of course, Estellia’s also caters. Handling all occasions big and small, the Estellia’s team can make your event extra-special with their authentic dishes, fancy sandwiches, deluxe cheese platters, fruit and veggie platters and dainty trays. And

if there is something you want that’s not on their menu, they’ll do their best to make it for your special occasion. Not only is Estellia’s Ukrainian Comfort Food worth the trip to Dugald, they’ll have you coming back over and over again. “We serve fresh, quality Ukrainian food,” says Belbas. “Baba would be honoured to see her recipes have blossomed into delicious successful dishes that have people coming back for more.” Located at 682 Dugald Road, Estellia’s summer hours are Monday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call to place an order or book catering. W

innipeg Blue Bombers’ fans are hoping to be less blue this football season. The team has missed the playoffs five out of the last six seasons and holds the title for the longest Grey Cup drought in the CFL with its last win dating back to 1990. Set to host to this year’s 103rd championship game, fans are hoping this might be the season when their team finally comes together. In spite of a challenging start to the schedule — the Bombers’ first game against rival Roughriders — head coach Mike O’Shea is optimistic. “We have some very talented players. We were looking to improve our talent base and improve competition across the board. I believe we’ve achieved that.” This new team, with its many different elements, is determined to be a top contender — evidenced by its June 27 victory in Regina, a first since Sept. 2004. Now it’s time to put it all together and hope the new and veteran talent gel.

“It’s a good test for us,” says the coach. “We need to come out of the gate hot and we need to win early. But mostly we need to consider each game, one at a time,” he says. And they did just that. In fact, quarterback Drew Willy had a stellar first game against the Riders going 22 for 25 passes and for 325 yards with three touchdowns. Twin tailbacks, Paris Cotton and Cameron Marshall also started the season hot. Marshall scored two touchdowns, one of which was in the air; He certainly was impressive but so too was the 108 yards of rushing for Cotton. Both running backs gave the Roughriders a taste of what Manitoba is all about by battling tackle after tackle. It looks as though the Bombers’ front office strategy of completely overhauling the offensive line in the off-season paid off by keeping Willy injury-free, but also putting points on the scoreboard and hopefully leading the team right into playoffs. What’s more, in their match up against the green, Nick Moore hauled in an 18-

SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

yard touchdown toss from Willy with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter to take the lead in front of 32,288 crazed Roughrider fans. It was Moore’s first touchdown in 10 games as a member of the Bombers. “I told you,” Moore said. “I told you all I was going to score the first game. I had a chip on my shoulder.” Whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter as long as Winnipeg can prevail. At least from the outside, it appears the team is laden with change and perhaps even optimism. As for fans in Winnipeg, support for the Blue and Gold is renewed as they hunker down into the spectacular Investor’s Group Stadium to see exactly what O’Shea can draw out of his players. And so as the season begins and the team works at being cohesive, Winnipeg anxiously awaits more wins and more gold than wheat on the prairies. Go Blue!

In a time when so many flooring materials do their best to imitate natural products, it’s an affordable luxury to have the real thing. One of the most popular choices in stone flooring is limestone. Limestone is a sedimentary stone formed in ancient sea beds, whose characteristic colours include neutrals such as off-white, beige, tan, taupe and a light blue/grey. Popular in the medieval period in the construction of castles and cathedrals, limestone has been a reliable building choice for thousands of years. Limestone can have numerous fossil impressions in it, evoking memories of sand and sea. While it is a durable stone, it is relatively soft and shouldn’t be used in high-traffic areas of the home. Its porous nature makes it susceptible to staining as well. A heavy-duty sealant can fix those problems, however, it will need to be reapplied every few years. For a traditional and elegant look, marble is a great choice. Used by Greek and Roman sculptors, marble has come to be a symbol

for refined taste. What was once the choice of kings is much more accessible now, giving an old-world elegance to the home. A highly resilient stone, marble does need some special care when it comes to scratching and staining. Marble is a metamorphosed limestone, which gives it a hard surface that can take a high polish, giving it that glossy look it is known for. This glossy surface looks especially pristine in a kitchen or bath where the tile can be continued on the wall. Because of its associations with artistry, marble is often seen as a statement, but it is one that stands the test of time with a rich historical legacy. Travertine is a luxury stone tile that is often thought to be impractical because of its porous surface which lends itself to staining. However, with the proper milling and sealing, this stone can be a gorgeous addition to any home. Travertine can be honed to give it a satinsmooth finish and very little reflection, or it can be polished, which gives it a high-gloss finish that reflects light and highlights the stone’s colour and markings. The characteristic colours of travertine are off-white, beige, tan and yellow, and it makes a great choice for hallways, entrances and living spaces. Its matte finish provides a warm look, and feels soft underfoot. Most quality

travertine comes from Italy and Turkey, which have the biggest and most wellestablished stone quarries. Stone tile flooring works well in any season, whether you’re looking for the cool touch of stone in the summers or the luxury of heated tiles in the winter. Adding a touch of the old world and nature to your home, stone tile is a great investment.

There is a core group of about 15 men who are all hard working, dedicated professionals. The same customer service philosophy is carried over to the sales team. This strong group of dedicated professionals understand the importance of providing excellent customer care. They take the time to listen to the customer and assist them in finding the best products to fit their lifestyle and budget. As with any team, each member brings their own unique talents and expertise to the group. Office manager Stephanie Matkowski has been with Friesen Floor and Decor for the past eight years and, in many ways, has become Friesen’s right-hand person. Assisting with providing estimates and job quoting are just a few items on her long list of valued duties. Tova Williams-Belliveau is the receptionist, and so much more. Together with LaDawn Friesen, the two take care of in-store customer service, merchandising, design and colour, among other things. Friesen notes LaDawn works on marketing, advertising, photography and is their site’s webmaster. New to the team is Friesen’s son Connor, who will be learning all aspects of the business. “Connor has been working in the construction field for the past four years. He has experience as a construction supervisor and safety supervisor. We are all very excited to have him on board with us,” says Friesen. Along with exceptional service, Friesen Floor and Decor takes pride in offering only the best quality products featuring a large selection of stunning woods from Eastern Canada. Having the right combination of top quality flooring products and a dedicated team of professionals who know how to treat the customer right has made Friesen Floor and Decor one of the most trusted businesses in the industry. new line of flooring at Friesen Flooring and Decor is quickly becoming a favourite thanks to its versatility and durability. TORLYS EverWood and EverTile, although only recently added to Friesen’s flooring options, are sought-after products by clients across Manitoba. The features of EverWood and EverTile are numerous. TORLYS can be used throughout your home because its lowgloss realistic wood and tile styles match perfectly with any décor. EverWood and EverTile are entirely hypoallergenic, making them particularly attractive for any allergen-free rooms but especially bedrooms, family rooms and living rooms. EverWood and EverTile stay warm to the touch even on the coldest of days, an essential quality in our winter climate. Their durable, ultra-thick, 100 per cent waterproof and stain-resistant wear layer makes floor maintenance stress-free and helps protect them from damp basements, spills, and bathroom humidity. TORLYS flooring is also very quiet because of the layer of CorkPlus underlay — making it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas such as hallways and other main areas of houses. Owner Ward Friesen from Friesen Flooring says TORLYS EverWood and EverTile have been extremely popular

with customers since the lines were first introduced in the store. “We had people phoning in to request EverWood and EverTile even before we began carrying them,” he comments. In addition to the numerous advantages of the flooring itself, there are also many customer service perks for clients purchasing EverWood and EverTile. “TORLYS offers a 10 year commercial warranty on their flooring,” says Ward. “And there is a one-time move included in their warranty, so you can move your TORLYS floor to another room or another building or home under your warranty if you if you want.” Finally, TORLYS is a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity, meaning the flooring can be disassembled and donated to any local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

ost of us lead busy lives, and thus spending hours lounging in a bathtub isn’t a regular occurrence. Bathtubs are also declining in popularity, and taking up much needed space in your bathroom. So why not create a luxurious space you can enjoy every day? One of this year’s top trends is shower conversion — using that much needed space for an expansive walk-in shower. Walk-in showers create a more open space, with doorless and curbless shower options. Besides, relaxing in a spa-like atmosphere can help lift your mood before facing the hectic workday.

KELLY LOVELL

A Canadian Business Leader Empowering Youth By Kim Mannix Vermette

To describe Kelly Lovell as energetic is an understatement. Yet, it seems a perfect descriptor for the 22-year-old entrepreneur who already has a resume that rivals those of some of the most successful professionals in the country.

T

he Waterloo, Ont. native is CEO of Lovell Corporation, The Kelly Effect, My Effect and Motivation Minders, as well as founder of My Clean City and executive producer and host of YOU Effect, a global youth powered media network featuring a celebrity web series and Rogers TV show. Her mission is to connect youth, business and community, making positive changes for the world. Lovell speaks to audiences about unlocking their potential, following their dreams and not letting obstacles such as youth or inexperience stand in the way of doing what they love. “It’s so disheartening to hear young people say ‘I can’t do this,’ and that’s the end of it. I want to bring awareness that if I can do this, they can too,” she says. Lovell’s philosophy for her life is the same as her philosophy for work; you need to find what makes you happy and do it with all your heart.

She says the award she’s most proud of is her silver Stevie award for young entrepreneur of the year for women in business. “It was an international nomination that included people in 22 nations, so to be recognized beyond the Canadian business world was exciting,” says Lovell. The accolades have the added benefit of making her entrance into boardrooms of the business world a little easier, where a youthful voice can sometimes serve as an obstacle. Lovell says the common tips she gives to businesses on how to engage the “me generation” or “generation Z” are meant to help corporations realize young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today. Lovell says the first point to remember when working with youth in business is

to give them a voice: “They need space to have their ideas heard, so let them speak at a meeting. Let them share their thoughts.” While it’s the tradition to look at youth as the voices of inexperience, and therefore not as relevant as seasoned employees, Lovell says they should instead be seen as voices of ingenuity. “Embracing that creativity is so important. In youth, we’re not yet jaded and still daring enough to ask: ‘Why is the world the way it is?’ “ Lovell loves to talk about youth, but she is still most inspired talking to and with youth. She says she always welcomes the opportunity to connect with her audience members or young people in the community. She encourages them to reach out to her through her website or Twitter.

Lovell explains it was never her intention to become an entrepreneur and poster girl for youth empowerment in Canada. In fact, when she first enrolled in university it was to pursue sciences and medicine. But once she realized she had an important message to share and that people appreciated hearing it, one streak of inspiration led to more motivation. Soon she found herself as the winner of a dozen awards and accolades, including Governor General of Canada’s Caring Canadian, the youngest of the 2013 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100, and a recipient of the QEII Diamond Jubilee medal. AUDI Q7

DRIVING LUXURY By Trina Annand

If you conjure up an image of a SUV and don’t think of luxury and performance, you’re obviously unfamiliar with the Audi Q7. After seven years of careful design and revision, the model’s newest incarnation is set to roll out this fall with a redesigned body and features drivers can’t find anywhere else.

T

he lightest vehicle in its class at 4,318 lbs., the 2016 Q7 is an astounding 716 lbs. lighter than it was, roughly the weight of a baby grand piano or three baby elephants or an entire classroom of five year olds. This amazing feat was achieved by using high strength steel and aluminum, now 41 per cent of the vehicle’s body. The redesign also means the vehicle is shorter and more narrow, but offers more interior space. Thanks to a lighter body

and an energy recovery system, the Q7 is now 26 per cent more fuel-efficient. With sleek lines, supple leathers and a Bang & Olufsen state-of-the-art sound system, the Q7 epitomizes luxury. Not just beautiful, this SUV offers the latest and best in safety technology. Featuring active cruise control with Traffic-Jam Assist which allows the car to steer itself in heavy traffic, the Q7 is the next generation of truly smart vehicles. Audi’s exit warning system keeps those inside

and outside the SUV safe by warning of approaching vehicles and cyclists. The company’s ground breaking Night Vision Assist uses thermal imaging technology to detect any animals or people the human eye can’t detect at night. Harnessing the power of technology has always been a guiding principle for Audi; over the last century the company has changed luxury performance. The newest advancement for Audi, the Q7, heralds a new era of connectivity, safety and luxury.

Always the Pursued. Boasting powerful new engines like the 333-horsepower 3.0 TFSIÂŽ, a bold new exterior and innovative technology like Active Lane Assist, Night Vision Assist and LED headlights, the new Audi A6 is as sought after as the individual who drives it. Presence redefined.

PUBLISHER’S CHOICE

What Makes a Business the Best?

S

eeking out the city’s ‘Best of the Best’ is a task we take seriously at Fine Lifestyles. With so much competition in the marketplace — and consumers researching their options more than ever — businesses must continually innovate to stay at the top of their game. Here are three key practices that make a company stand out from the pack. 1. THEY PRIORITIZE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE In the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us an opportunity to do so.” The best businesses listen to clients’ needs, exceed their expectations, address their concerns, and do their best to ensure their experience is positive from beginning to end. 2. THEY ENGAGE THROUGH EFFECTIVE ADVERTISING From sharing services and products on social media to advertising online and in print, successful businesses know how to reach their customers. These days, people are just one click away from a competitor. Businesses who effectively use modern forms of marketing — and adapt as the tools evolve — position themselves well ahead of companies who rely strictly on word of mouth. The more marketing engages directly with customers, the stronger it is. 3. THEY KEEP STRIVING TO BE BETTER No matter how successful they become, the best companies continually strive to be better. They stay ahead of changes in their industry, pay attention to consumer behaviour and adapt to meet demands. And if a service or product they offer isn’t working, they change it. This passion and drive is reflected in every aspect of a successful business. We’re proud to showcase the best of our city in these pages.

pened in 2003 by Chef Fern Kirouac, In Ferno’s Bistro specializes in French Mediterranean food with an Asian twist. A classic bistro, In Ferno’s offers a tasty range of daily features. “We like to always have something different on the menu,” says son, Chris. “So there’s constantly something new to try.” To complement their food offerings, In Ferno’s has an excellent wine menu and servers who are very knowledgeable about wine and wine pairings. But one thing Winnipeg can come to expect from Chef Fern is his decadent dessert selection. “We have a wonderful dessert case you see right when you enter the bistro,” Chris says. “All the desserts we serve are made in house

and there is a wonderful selection of desserts, pastries and bread. People often come by to pick up desserts just to take home or for special occasions.” While their featured sweet afters change often, some favourites include their crème brûlées, the strawberry Bavarian cream pie and their signature chocolate cheesecake topped with cappuccino-infused whipped cream. A notable destination in summer is the patio at In Ferno’s. Hidden from the street by a vast lilac bush, the patio is shady and private yet spacious, seating up to 80 people. “There’s a big apple tree in the middle of the patio that gives a lot of shade,” says Chris, “and we have a tiki hut at the back that seats groups of six to eight.”

A family affair, In Ferno’s represents three generations of Kirouacs in the restaurant business. Chef Fern’s father, Fernand Sr., worked as a chef in restaurants in Quebec and the Carribbean before flying into Winnipeg in the late 1960s to run a hotel. It was there Chef Fern learned to cook. “He started when he was 13 years old at the International Inn — pulled in different parts of the kitchen, he learned all the areas of cookery,” Chris says. “He really learned a lot there.” For years the Kirouac family owned and ran the renowned restaurants The Red Lantern and La Vieille Gare, where Chef Fern ran the kitchen for 18 years. Finally, after decades of owning and running the family restaurants he had grown up working in, Chef Fern decided to open his own restaurant, with his son joining him soon after. “The rest,” as Chris says, “is history.” Today, In Ferno’s Bistro is just as exciting as when it first opened its doors. There are always new features on the menu, and different wines and desserts to try. Chef Fern has brought another excellent chef on board, Sean McGillivray, who brings his talent and flair to the menu as well. And, as Winnipeggers know, three years ago, Chris branched out to open the second In Ferno’s in River Heights — In Ferno’s on Academy offers many favourites from In Ferno’s Bistro, as well as many new dishes of their own. CUSTOM JEWELRY

Mōkadä Custom Jewelry Design Studio

Beyond the Everyday By Emmaly Wiederholt Photos BTL WEDDING

I

t would be the rare person who just wakes up in the morning and carelessly throws on jewelry. Most of us are quite the opposite. Though we might dress in a hurry, the earrings we pair with a blouse or the sparkling ring we slip on is always placed with fastidious care. This is because jewelry transcends the everyday; it’s ornamental, a statement of personal aesthetic. Mokada Custom Jewelry Design understands the value inherent in a fine piece of jewelry, and takes pride in the high level with which they create that special jeweled statement. But what is it exactly about Mokada that sets it apart?

“First of all, the studio,” answers co-owner Danielle Tkachyk. “There is dedicated oneon-one time with a designer in an intimate setting. In other words, you are not standing at centre court of the mall hoping to not be spotted buying what is supposed to be a surprise engagement ring.” Then there’s Mokada’s network of suppliers. “Often the best value is represented by pairing a hand selected diamond or gem with a mount or semi mount you created,” Tkachyk explains. “We have frequently sourced loose stones many a jeweler advised were not available, like unheated rubies, fancy cuts, raw industrial diamonds, unusually shaped

black diamonds, large size morganite, replacements for insurance claims, etc.” But Mokada’s value goes beyond the studio and supplies: “People do not end up at Mokada by accident,” Tkachyk says. “Owner Mona Stott brings to the table over 20 years’ experience in the industry. She refuses to make an exact design twice so you are guaranteed you will not see your custom creation on another. She will not stop until you are 100 per cent satisfied. She strikes an immediate bond with all of our clients — hence the inundation of wedding invitations and thank you gifts. Her clients are like her family; without them her career would

not have been possible. She is one of the lucky few who truly loves what she does and it shines through in every design.” Mokada’s happy clients speak for themselves. Landon O. describes his satisfaction after working with Mokada: “After glancing at rings online and in magazines, Josey exclaimed one day, ‘I am over diamonds!’ From that moment on, I knew I needed to look for a gem or stone that had a little extra pizazz, just like my future wife! I searched for some time and finally decided the morganite gem would be perfect for Josey. After trying several jewelers, I finally came across the amazingly kind and talented

Mona at Mokada Custom Jewelry. As soon as I entered her quaint shop, I was offered a crown and cola; I knew this was the place for me! CURLY HAIR EXPERT

FROM FRIZZY TO FABULOUS: Love the Hair You Have with TANIAjane Naturally Curly By Tori Stafford

There’s a common dichotomy in the world of hair: Those with straight hair wish they had some curl and those with curls envy the idea of having a straight, manageable mane.

T

ania Jane knows all too well the stresses of having a headful of curls. An award-winning top Canadian stylist and dedicated expert in the science of curly hair for more than 30 years, Tania Jane herself is a “curly girl.” Her mission in the world of hair care and hairstyling is to help others with curly hair not only manage their spirally tendrils, but love and rock their curls in every style imaginable. Tania Jane confesses it was her passion for helping others to love their curls and not her own plight with curly hair that drove her into specialized haircare. With

diplomas in advanced formulations for natural and organic ingredients and trichology — a branch of dermatology dedicated to the scalp, hair and hair structure — Tania Jane brings together the art of hair design and the science of hair, with a focus on the natural beauty of curls. Upon moving to Winnipeg three years ago, Tania Jane made the decision to have an exclusively curly clientele, which means she never turns away a client with curly hair. “I truly love working with curly-haired clients. twice. Clients usually have a variety of curls on their head, and no two clients are alike,” she says. “Shaping and custom designing looser curl to fit in harmony with tighter curl, or even straight parts is a brilliant puzzle. I love teaching clients how to work effortlessly with their hair — it’s just wonderful and exciting.” Her ‘curly only’ concept has created a community, both locally and online, where curly-haired clients trade stories, tips and tricks based on what they’ve learned through their appointments. Not only does Tania Jane spend time educating other stylists and stylist educators on cutting and advanced product application techniques for curly hair, but she also spends time with each client she sees, demonstrating how to achieve their desired curly look with as little effort as possible.

“It’s not only important what I can do in the salon for them, it matters what they can do at home for themselves. I like to keep things easy,” she says. Along with proper shaping, a huge part of her philosophy is introducing her clients to the right tools. The TANIAjane Naturally Curly product line consists of only three products: cleanser, conditioner and the three-in-one styling product initially designed specifically for curly hair in a Canadian climate that is gaining popularity internationally. Manufactured here in Winnipeg, the product line is now available for other stylists and salons to carry, both under the TANIAjane label or a private label. But what makes her products so successful is how simply and effectively they transform ‘frizzy and tangled’ to shiny, bouncy and beautiful. “For most, it’s a first time introduction to their real hair and I have so much fun watching them fall in love with it” Tania Jane says. “Curly hair is like a unique accessory we grow and we should enjoy showing it off.” Salon TANIAjane 55 Meadowbank Rd. ENCLOSURES

Your Own Private Outdoor Refuge By Emmaly Wiederholt

t’s a beautiful day — what better place to spend it than outdoors? And yet, once outside, you realize you must contend with sun, wind, dust, insects and birds. Wouldn’t it be ideal to have a space that is climate controlled, but still allows you the ineffable joy of sitting outside?

Would you like to enjoy breakfast on your balcony without chilly winds ruffling your hair? Imagine having

a dinner party on your patio without worrying about rain. Lumon’s retractable glass allows you to transform your open space into a well-protected refuge, inviting you to spend your precious leisure time basking in natural light. Lumon’s Winnipeg regional manager Kazwel Levandoski explains, “There’s

virtually no one else besides Lumon in Canada who offers a frameless glass wall for condo balconies. Our glass wall is new to Winnipeg, but customers elsewhere in Canada have found it allows them to use their condo balcony more frequently. It gives them another space in their home to enjoy.” He recommends Lumon to anyone who revels in time spent in their own personal outdoor retreat. Levandoski goes on to describe aspects of Lumon’s products and services that costumers have come to appreciate: “We also offer a glass roof that can come with blinds, so you can see the sky and stars when you want, but when it’s hot out you can pull the blinds and keep out the heat. In the winter, the glass roof captures heat when the sun shines on it, warming the space and making it usable. In Winnipeg however, the top roofing material we work with is acrylic, which allows light to shine through but blocks 75 per cent of the sun’s heat and, best of all, the acrylic panels we work with block 98 per cent of the sun’s UV rays. In addition, all of our structures are built to hold a very large amount of snow, which is an important consideration during Canadian winters.” All of Lumon’s structures are custom built for the home, so Lumon is able to work in almost any situation to ensure they deliver what the customer envisions. Besides keeping out rain, snow, wind, dust, insects and birds, Lumon’s structures protect inner surfaces, which means fewer maintenance costs and repairs for the homeowner. They also reduce noise by 50 per cent and save on energy. For those living on the lowest floors of building complexes, these structures are a secure and long-lasting solution to increase safety. In addition to all of these benefits, Lumon’s retractable glass is unrivalled for its style, price, appearance, functionality and user-friendliness. With options from natural light patio covers to three-season sunrooms and retractable condo balcony enclosures, isn’t it time you called Lumon to help you maximize use of the outdoor spaces in your home? There’s nothing quite like a day spent outdoors — sans the elements, of course. Lumon Canada Inc. 204.996.3286 kazwel.levandoski@lumon.com www.lumon.ca

people are building homes with extended gas lines to accommodate the trend in fully functional backyard living. Not only are the aesthetics eye catching but so too are the functional elements. ‘“One of the things many people don’t realize is that you can buy a propane fireplace even if you don’t have natural gas in your home, which means you can enjoy the conveniences of a natural gas appliances with liquid propane,” he says. When it comes to built-in appliances, homeowners have more flexibility than ever before with top quality products

from which to choose. After all, nobody wants to renovate a room two years after an install. So how does one choose the best fireplace for your space? Johnson recommends to first pick your fuel choice. “Sometimes this decision is dependant on location. We have customers buying new fireplaces for their bathrooms, bedrooms, rec rooms, cottages and outdoor kitchens.” Next, decide how much heat output is required. Heat Saver sells gas, wood, pellet and electric fireplaces too; gas and electric can be decorative or heat producing, keeping in mind electric units are limited to the power available in the circuit. Once the homeowner has decided on the location and desired amount of heat, the next step is to choose the media, which really can be a lot of fun from a design aspect. Media in a unit can become the focal point of a room. From glass or wood to rocks, to driftwood and a dancing flame — almost anything is possible. Today’s fireplaces are programmable for comfort with controllable flame, temperature, heat output, under lighting, fan and even desired start and stop times. “With the old fireplaces, you flicked a switch and it was either on or off. We carry some of the most efficient fireplaces rated by Energuide,” says Johnson. For centuries, the hearth has always been the gathering place for families in every house, a spot where life fades to flame, if only for a short while. “You choose the unit, we’ll look after the entire process. Working through our network of dealers, we can direct you to a showroom, we will supply and coordinate all of the venting and arrange installation with a WETT certified or certified gasfitter installed to code,” says Johnson. With endless possibilities, the best product lines and seamless installation, it’s no wonder they are Winnipeg’s best place to buy a fireplace. In fact, she has her hand in almost every recipe used in the store, many of which were handed down from her parents, Carolina and Tomasso, who immigrated to Winnipeg from the southern Italian region of Calabria in the 1920s. “The base of most of the recipes are rooted in the Calabria area,” says Maria, “because it’s what I know and what I grew up with; notwithstanding that I was privileged to learn some very special Northern Italian cuisine where my husband Ugo’s family is from in Veneto, Italy.” Maria’s appetite for homemade food and bringing people together to share meals developed early. She fondly remembers her parents getting together with a few other Italian families and preparing their own sausages. “They would have friends over, making sausages as a pastime. Then they’d enjoy a little bite of sausage with wine,” she says. “They found ways to enjoy their life and that was one of them.” Today, these gatherings around fresh food and great times continue to be passed down through the family. Even her young grandson enjoys the excitement of making delicious fresh sausages — a multigenerational tradition. Piazza De Nardi’s sells 15 different types of homemade sausages including Calabrese, lamb with fennel, mild lemon chicken, hot lemon chicken and Sicilianstyle sausage with fennel seed and garlic. All are extremely lean and tasty. PREVIOUS PAGE Maria and Tom De Nardi, owner and son PhOtOS thIS PAGE Pantel Photography BEST OF THE BEST FEATURE

As with all the recipes used in the store, Maria’s interest in food and culinary creativity come into play. “I try different recipes and tweak them until I feel our customers will enjoy them most,” she says. A lot of time, love and passion is put into everything made at Piazza De Nardi, but especially at the Gourmet Party Table. Need an appetizer, salad or antipasto for your next party? Perhaps beef Wellington or Maria’s fig infused pork loin? The Gourmet Party Table has about 30 different items available at all times and they are constantly inventing new offerings. Crab cakes, chicken liver paté, giardiniera and Maria’s delicious in-house cured salt and sugar salmon are some of the recent dishes on hand.

“People love the convenience and appreciate our recipes,” says Maria. “Everything is made fresh. They can dress up our salads on a bed of butter lettuce, drizzle a balsamic cream around and create a beautiful appetizer they can claim as their own.” If you need a hot dish for the family, Piazza De Nardi’s Hot Table offers a variety of homemade options too. Chicken parmigiana, Hungarian goulash, osso bucco and lasagna bolognese are just a few of the rustic, hearty meals to choose from. Of course, the Cold Table has many of the same meals you can take home and warm whenever you’re ready.

Since the De Nardis first started out with a small Italian grocery store on Sargent Avenue in the early 1970s, Maria and Ugo have worked hard to create a unique shopping experience for all Winnipeggers. What started as one of the city’s first ethnic food stores has grown to become one of the best food and wine shopping experiences in the city, drawing residents from every neighbourhood and cultural background. But that was no accident, says Maria. This shopping destination grew from the love and passion for food and wine the De Nardis have as a family. Her son, Tom, now runs the store with her and her daughter, Liana, works with Ugo on the back end, sourcing the freshest produce and most unique products from around the world.

Many of their department heads have been with them since the beginning and are extremely knowledgeable — as is the staff. Have questions about the meal you’re planning or the best wines to serve? To find out how you can make your best dinner yet, speak to one of their inhouse chefs or sommeliers, or even Maria herself. Everyone at Piazza De Nardi’s prides themselves on offering great customer service in every department. “We have a great team here,” says Maria. “We all share a passion for food and wine. This is not just a job for anyone here and we don’t take short cuts.” From aging their Angus beef for 21 days to making their gelato and sorbet inhouse; from cracking, de-pitting and brining Californian olives to pickling jalapeño peppers and making homemade tapenade, the staff takes every step

possible to ensure customers receive the very highest quality food. Education is key. In Piazza De Nardi’s Tuscany Room, above the wine store, they offer educational dinners about every six weeks. At these events, chefs discuss dishes and sommeliers speak about the wines they’re paired with. It’s all about good chemistry. Piazza De Nardi’s also offers Friday night wine flights to taste different wines and expand your palette. “Piazza” is Italian for “meeting place,” of course, and for more than 40 years, De Nardi’s has been a favourite meeting place for the city’s Italians, Greeks and Portuguese. While chefs from Winnipeg’s finest restaurants are shopping in their white coats for exquisite artisan washed-rind cheeses, aged Angus beef

or fresh black figs, friends and family are meeting for espresso in Piazza De Nardi’s Mediterranean-style café. Seeing their Greek, Italian and Portuguese customers come in and speak their own native languages is touching for Maria and brings back a lot of memories. But now, it’s not just them. You’ll also see their grown sons and daughters come in with their own children. “They may not shop the same way their parents did,” she says, “but they still want that quality, Mediterranean-style food. It fills our hearts to see these people. This is a lifetime story for us.” Piazza De Nardi 1360 Taylor Avenue Winnipeg 204.982.9461 piazzadenardi.com BELOW Tuscany Room

IF YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR HEALTH, WHAT DO YOU HAVE?

their unique position on health was the perfect recipe for living my best life.”

iz Karchut learned the hard way what most people take for granted – that good health is a treasure. “I’ve been a healthcare professional for 25 years. I thought I was doing everything right by eating healthy and exercising. I didn’t see the need for nutritional supplementation and I didn’t trust the industry.” Liz recalls. “Then my life took a sudden turn when I had a health scare. As a result, I began researching my options and that’s when I found Shaklee. Quickly I realized what made them different. As it turned out,

It was a twofold discovery. Shaklee also gave Liz the opportunity to change her financial health too, which prompted her to start her own Shaklee business. “Founded on integrity, it was an easy company to believe in,” she says.

“We’ve experienced firsthand the changing economy; job security is not what it used to be,” says Liz. “My husband lost his job after 25 years with the same company, then experienced it again five years later with a different company. Thankfully, because of our success with Shaklee we didn’t have the financial stress that typically occurs with a job loss.” In fact, Liz now earns a high five-figure income, from the comfort of her own home. “I can’t believe I get paid to work from my home, my haven, every day doing something I love! I’ve even earned all-expense paid vacations for my entire family.”

hen most of us think of going to the airport, travel comes to mind. Here in Winnipeg however, there’s another excellent reason to go: to dine at The Blue Marble Restaurant and Lounge. Apart from the fantastic food and service it has come to be known for, The Blue Marble recently rolled out a new seasonal tapas menu with savory delights worth salivating over, and is one of the top five restaurants in Winnipeg. Take, for example, the house cured lox tapas with scrumptious beet and horseradish cure, pumpernickel, pickled

vegetables, beet vinaigrette, crème fraiche and dill. Or the beef short ribs with sautéed forest mushrooms, potato purée, haricot vert, Guinness sauce and thyme crisp Doesn’t the thought alone make your mouth water? With delicacies like these, The Blue Marble has become a food destination for locals and visitors alike. When asked her favourite from the menu, assistant general manager Danielle Streilein responds, “To be honest, they’re all absolutely incredible. The most popular are the beef short ribs and the lemon risotto.”

BEST OF THE BEST FEATURE

A lot of the success is due to Chef Anthony Kucera. “He comes up with his very own recipe ideas after tons of research and development,” describes Streilein. “For example, he’ll take black olives and turn them into a dust for garnish and seasoning. Things like that set him apart from other chefs in the area. He also makes his sauces, dressings, jams and more in-house. He’s so dedicated and full of inspiration; he really is determined to create masterpieces on a plate for everyone to enjoy.” Chef Kucera started working as a line cook at Le Beaujolais in 1999. His personal

drive took him to Pine Ridge Hollow in 2002 where he became the sous chef. He further learned the intricacies of being a sous chef at the iconic Dubrovnik Restaurant in 2004, where he completed his apprenticeship and won “Top Manitoba Apprentice.” Chef Kucera worked at Gluttons Bistro, St. Charles Country Club, The Manitoba Club and Summerhill Market before gracing The Blue Marble with his culinary genius. No divine dining experience would be complete without that perfect compliment — wine. The Blue Marble has an extensive wine menu to pair with the chef’s tasty treats. “We have everything from a general house wine to selections a wine connoisseur would request,” notes Streilein. Of course, when you go to the airport to eat, you don’t want to pay for parking. So if you spend $20 or more at The

Blue Marble, your parking is validated. Simply park in the main Winnipeg airport parkade, bring your ticket in with you; upon leaving the restaurant validates your ticket. Beyond its new seasonal tapas, The Blue Marble has become a foodie’s paradise for its full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus made from the freshest local ingredients. Such is the quality of its food, Winnipeg locals might assume The Blue Marble Restaurant and Lounge is the No. 1 reason to go to the airport catching that plane might be secondary. pancake, vegetables, meat, noodles and fried egg, all cooked separately and then deliciously layered together. There’s also takoyaki — octopus in a baked wheat ball — and plenty of gyoza dumplings. The menu features traditional Japanese fare such as donburi, yakisoba and the ever-popular hamburg steak. But don’t worry if you’re eating gluten-free, as there are plenty of meal options for you too. For dessert, you’ll find honey toast,

parfaits and jumbo parfaits (request ahead for the jumbo), plus shaved ice and shakes and floats in flavours such as matcha Oreo, strawberry cheesecake, coffee and orange ginger ale. In addition to its authentic menu, Dwarf no Cachette has also brought the maid café service to Winnipeg. In Japan, kawaii maid cafés feature servers dressed in maid costumes acting as servants, and treat their customers as if they’re in a private home, not café patrons. This popular Japanese custom can be experienced at Dwarf no Cachette on Tuesdays. During the service, you can sample the ‘masters plate,’ which is loaded with breaded and deep fried shrimp, Hamburg steak, marinated deep fried chicken and egg salad with rice. “This is a new dining concept for Winnipeg,” says Yasuko. “And in July, we’re going to start kawaii maid café service for breakfast, plus a new range of detox breakfast food and drinks.”

RECLAIMED BARN WOOD FURNITURE

From Barn to Bench

he character and charm of yesteryear can be found today in the uniquely crafted furniture from Prairie Barnwood. Constructed from wood reclaimed off of old barns, each item of furniture is distinctive in design, rich in history and environmentally friendly. Owner Blayne Wyton and his staff work with you to design something to suits your individual style and space while connecting you with your communal heritage. As the former owner of Windsor Furniture, Wyton has years of experience

in the industry. Seven years ago, he went on a rural road trip. Along the way, he kept noticing old barns which were no longer being used and the thought struck him that this valuable source of recycled wood was perfect for furniture, flooring and wall coverings. Soon after, Wyton opened Prairie Barnwood. Every year, the company’s crews carefully dismantle barns in Ontario and Manitoba. Harvested at a time when there was little pollution, the wood (many from Douglas Firs) is strong and durable. “At first, we approached the barn’s owners,” says

Wyton. “Now, many come to us. They like that the wood is being put to good use and that their heritage will live on in another form. Many ask us to make them an item as a keepsake.” All the wood is pressure-washed and dried in kilns to remove any moisture or insects. “What makes barn wood so special,” explains Wyton, “is its character. This comes from being exposed to the elements, from animals rubbing against it or walking on it. There are nail holes, saw marks and sometimes even carvings. You don’t find patina like that on fresh cut lumber.”

As operations manager, Geoff visits all work sites daily to ensure the work is going as planned and clients’ needs are met. “Having an operations manager enables us to keep very high work standards,” Jon explains, “because we have an outside pair of eyes checking on each project, every day.” The Charleswood Roofing team is active in the community and supports a number of local initiatives including Siloam Mission, Youth for Christ, and Teen Challenge. s we age, our skin loses elasticity. Fine lines, wrinkles and age spots begin to appear. Canadian women and men now have access to a superior line of skin care products that not only slows down but reverses the signs of aging – Jeunesse. As its name implies, Jeunesse is a company devoted to antiaging. TREATMENT CENTRE

HEALING, LEARNING AND FREEDOM

from the Deadly Grip of Addiction By Melanie Furlong Photos Alicia Leclercq

A

ddicts and their families should never give up on the struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Ardyth Wilson, an alcoholic in recovery, knows this from personal experience. She got sober 30 years ago, but lost her brother, Dwight, to his addictions at a young age. This was one of the catalysts that drove Wilson to open the Leipzig Serenity Retreat seven years ago in Wilkie, SK., making it the only privately run addictions centre in the province. The beautiful retreat, located in an 88-year-old former convent, provides a warm, welcoming environment for addicts in a non-institutional setting. All the staff at Leipzig Serenity Retreat are

102

either in recovery themselves or have family members who are. Their fiveweek program is based on the 12 step philosophical ideas used by more than 350 organizations. Ms. Wilson states, “Many centres only do steps one to three or one to five, but we do all 12 of the steps here.” Working on her own, it took Wilson almost one year to do the 12 Steps and it was a very painful process. At Leipzig Serenity Retreat, they explore all the steps in five weeks. “Years ago, you could find someone in AA who would help you go through the steps,” she says. “It appears to be harder for people to give the kind of time you need to get clean and sober nowadays. When they come here

and learn the steps, they’re more apt to continue with their recovery and build a healthy support network.” Also offered is one-on-one counselling, small group counselling, meditation sessions and an emotional wellness program designed at Leipzig Serenity Retreat. The emotional wellness classes explore self-esteem issues, negative core beliefs and biased expectations. This exploration helps clients redefine and examine their own morals, values and beliefs. Ms. Wilson attributes their high rate of success to the intimate relaxed setting and high counsellor-client ratio. The retreat can accommodate up to a

maximum of 18 clients at one time and has three full-time counsellors on staff as well as peer support workers. Last year, 127 clients 18 years old and up took part in their programs. A client named Sam says, “I could not have asked for a better serenity retreat. The grounds are beautiful and huge and the staff is amazing and very helpful. My five weeks went by so fast and the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions helped me through it. I appreciate all that you have done for me!” While it’s heartbreaking to see the damage already done to young addicts, Wilson is adamant they are not without

hope. “Watching people change is the most fulfilling part of our jobs,” she says. Anyone who requests a tour of the facility is welcome and staff members are happy to answer questions from addicts or their families about the program. If you or anyone you know could benefit from the services at Leipzig Serenity Retreat, give them a call. This special place is changing lives for the better. What better time to check out these beautifully crafted pieces than this summer? The tiki-style items are perfect for island-like decorating in pool houses, cottages, sunrooms, outdoor kitchens and entertainment areas. Check out the

airbrushed surfboards, tiki totems, masks or bamboo chimes to give your home a tropical feel. Light and modular bamboo tiki bars and furniture sets can easily be moved around your space for parties on decks and patios — perfect for outdoor use. Concrete garden statues and fountains in the form of Buddhas, frogs or elephants will bring a whimsical and peaceful element to your garden. Add colour to your outdoor lighting scheme with hanging lights, brilliant for covered decks. The bamboo lights are available with four different coloured cloth inserts to cover the bulbs. There are many new styles and models of lamps, most made with natural or recycled materials adaptable to transform your living space inside, as well. While some of the store’s pieces work best this season, most of the outstanding and remarkable furniture and art at Pieces of Paradise are likely to become family

heirlooms. Their hefty teak root tables, slab tables cut out of wind-fallen trees, live-edge coffee tables, desks and end tables are all are made with solid, natural wood and often have amazingly detailed carvings in the legs, such as the stunning elephant head table. Customers like Jackie Gulewich Kormilo often fall in love with the store from their very first visit. “My husband and I walked out with a couple of beautiful new pieces and were wanting more,” she writes on Facebook. “This could quickly become my favourite place to shop. We give them money to help them acquire materials for products ordered and pay them in full when we have our products. WOODWORKING

Rare Timber:

Bringing the Infinite Beauty of Nature into Your Home By Tonya Lambert Photos Clark Moeller

T

rees are majestic beauties, strong and proud, poised against the wind and rain, reaching for the sun. They encompass the very essence of nature; the breathtakingly rugged allure of a tree can render a viewer awestruck. Since a very early age, Drew Lockhart, owner and artisan of Rare Timber in La Salle, has had a keen appreciation for the diverse charms of trees and the splendour of the wood they leave behind. His journey into the world of woodworking began by

108

FineLifestyles

WINNIPEG

watching and then helping his father and grandfather in their shops. As an adult, he continued to hone his woodworking skills in his spare time. The results of his endeavours can be seen in stunning works of art found throughout his home. Inspired by George Takashima, a 20th century architect and woodworker who sought to release ‘the soul of the tree,’ Lockhart crafts live edge pieces that allow for a deep connection with nature. The live edge of the wood is what remains once the bark has been removed, its

BEST OF THE BEST FEATURE

undulations forming its own natural rhythm and unique look. Lockhart works with a wide variety of woods, from the exotic spalted maple to the spectacular cocobolo, from the light hues of willow to chocolate browns of black or claro walnut. Each piece of wood has its own tale to tell and Lockhart’s job is to find that story and reveal it in all its singular splendour, a task at which he greatly excels. Each type of wood has its own distinctive beauty – the ways in which Mother

Nature fashions its grain and cloaks it in colour. Lockhart uses clear finishes on all his pieces so the extraordinarily elegant shapes, lines and patterns created by its grain, burls and whorls shine through – be it the curious curls of soft maple, the chocolate waves of walnut or the straight, no nonsense grain of cherry wood. Every table, countertop or bench that Lockhart skillfully crafts in his Manitoba studio is a one-of-a-kind work of art. “Live edge is a type of furniture that fits with any type of décor,” notes Lockhart, “Whether it is an older home with lots of wood or a contemporary home with clean lines, a piece of live edge furniture makes an eyecatching accent.” Live edge furniture and wall art adds a depth of character and visual interest that is at once attractive and functional. The aesthetic impact of these expertly crafted heirloom pieces are sure to please the most discerning tastes.

Every piece of Rare Timber furniture and wall art comes with a lifetime warranty of repair or replacement against defect or workmanship though it is unlikely that anyone will ever have to claim it given the meticulous nature of Lockhart’s craftsmanship. If you are looking for a finely finished focal point for your home or office, stop by Rare Timber and meet with Drew Lockhart. Soon, you will experience the pride that comes from owning a truly remarkable handcrafted piece of art capturing the bold, unrefined magnificence of nature.
