NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

Our cover this month features the quintet Outback Brass, currently the 2024 2MBS Classical Artists in Residence. Its founder Phill O’Neill, relocating to Sydney after years living in regional Australia, decided to develop an ensemble with a primary focus on sharing and performing top level Australian music far and wide, including remote areas. In addition to its live performances, the group regularly posts new videos to its YouTube channel, and is intending to record an album comprised entirely of original Australian chamber brass music, featuring works by Adrian Hallam, Gareth Lewis, John Foster, Christopher Healey, Richard Percival, Richard Linton and Greg Van Der Struik. Outback Brass is also planning a concert series touring New South Wales.

November 4 is the centenary of the death of Gabriel Fauré, the French composer. Slow to gain recognition outside France, he is now regarded as a master of the song-cycle, and it was in this field that he achieved his greatest fame. The beauty of his songs was to earn him the title of the ‘French Schumann’, and his opera Pénélope is regarded by many as a masterpiece. You can hear Jessye Norman in the title role in our At the Opera broadcast on Wednesday 6 November.

Michael Morton-Evans concludes our investigation into the potential risks and benefits of Generative AI, particularly with regard to its use at 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. I am sure this will not be the last word on the subject, whose developments of any interest and relevance to us we will monitor and report as they unfold. david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

Outback Brass: 2MBS artists in residence for 2024

Outback Brass is a quintet that was formed in 2018 by Phill O’Neill, who, after having spent years living in regional Australia, had the desire to develop an ensemble with a primary focus on sharing and performing top level Australian music far and wide, including remote areas of Australia. As part of the 2024 2MBS residency, the ensemble plans to record an album comprised entirely of original Australian chamber brass music featuring works by Adrian Hallam, Gareth Lewis, John Foster, Christopher Healey, Richard Percival, Richard Linton and Greg Van Der Struik. In addition to engaging with 2MBS listeners through live performances, the group is also planning a concert series touring New South Wales.

You established Outback Brass in 2018. Can you explain to us how the group was formed and what your main focus is?

I initially started the group in 2018. Our primary aim was to record performances of high-quality brass quintet music and put it online so that people located in regional areas of Australia and all over the world could access it. The idea came to me because of my connection to regional areas of Australia. I grew up in the Adelaide Hills and although it wasn’t the largest commute it still felt like a regional area. I then joined the Army band as a musician where my first posting was Wagga Wagga in NSW. I was a very young man, wet behind the ears and eager to hear as much quality music as I could. Top quality classical music did come to Wagga Wagga, however it was the exception, not the rule. For this reason, it was common for me and many others to travel to Sydney or Melbourne to get this experience. After posting to Sydney, I became immersed in the music scene amongst other inspirational musicians, and I wanted to take it to people who didn’t have easy access to this kind of music.

The popularity of YouTube inspired me to use my audio engineering skills and learn videography to record brass

quintet music and stream it to YouTube. This allowed the incredible musicians in Sydney the ability to perform for people in regional areas without the financial sacrifice involved in travel. Six years on and I still hear from former students and friends in Wagga Wagga whenever we post new videos to our YouTube channel, thanking me for making this music available to them.

You often play the music of Australian composers. Can you tell us about some of the works you have played?

The focus on Australian music happened organically. Initially we began working on the staples of Brass Quintet music –J.S. Bach transcriptions, Canadian Brass arrangements, Victor Ewald and Malcolm Arnold quintets along with transcriptions of Percy Grainger. Eventually our YouTube channel was discovered by Melbourne based composer Chris Healey, leading to us performing his piece Visions of the Apocalypse via live stream concert during the Covid pandemic. Then our horn player Adrian Hallam wrote Outback Sunset which is our most requested piece to date. Gareth Lewis followed with Collaroy Skies, illustrating monumental aspects of his life. These pieces along with the Grainger we already had in our repertoire formed the all-Australian program. Once word got out that we were playing Australian music we were contacted by other composers including Greg Van Der Struik, Maria Grenfell, Richard Percival, John Foster and many others requesting we perform their music too. We love collaboration with these composers and really enjoy performing their music. You have regularly used the digital concert space. How does this work with your live performances, and does it influence the different ways of reaching your audience?

Our focus on digital performance requires a unique approach. The mindset of an audience member online is very different to someone who turns up to a concert. Someone in a live crowd is already excited to be there. They don’t bring distractions with them and their focus is entirely on the performance. Someone watching online has many distractions, so we need to be on our game to get attention quickly and retain it.

Owing to this difference in mindset, we change the way we play to suit the listener. We make changes to things like repertoire, tempo, dynamics and articulation to suit

the performance, whether it is an in-person concert, a live stream or a recording.

The most notable changes are with tempo and dynamics. The brass quintet has an extreme variety of dynamics. The softest really draw the listener to the front of their seat and our loudest dynamic will part your hair. If we use this extreme dynamic contrast digitally, the listeners will adjust the volume of their speakers, and the effect is less engaging. The same goes for our slower pieces. You will notice that recordings of Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry are faster than if you hear us live. There is more to a digital concert than just uploading good quality music. Artwork, thumbnails, titles, hashtags, search engine optimisation, links to social media, video angles, lighting, video editing, engaging with listeners in the comments section and replying to private messages; all of this is deliberately done to be more engaging for the listener wherever they may be, and takes a lot more work and time than a one-off physical performance.

What is the group’s most recent production, and what can we expect when listening to it?

This year with the support of 2MBS we were able to record our first album Music from Down Under. This project has been our biggest focus this year and we’re extremely

proud to have put together what we feel is some of the best modern brass quintet music in Australia. The music represented in this album is storytelling – stories of celebration, life journeys, tales of humour, mythical creatures and playful tunes. We use the full range of brass techniques from traditional fanfare and majesty to modern multiphonics, a variety of mutes and unconventional sounds from brass instruments to tell these stories.

What are the future plans for Outback Brass?

In addition to our online presence, Outback Brass has been working towards a regular concert series at Hunter Baillie Memorial Church in Annandale. Long term, we would really like to extend our regular performances beyond the Sydney area. We want to further enhance our vision for rural access to quality music. Our YouTube channel analytics are the biggest driver of our expansion. The more subscribers and viewers we get from different areas, the greater the likelihood we can physically visit those areas. Currently Newcastle, Wollongong, Gunnedah and Wagga Wagga are on the radar for us to visit in person as we get significant interaction from listeners in those areas. However, we are open to any regional, interstate or international opportunities to perform.

AI: Genius Productivity Tool, or Sorcerer’s Apprentice?

Michael Morton-Evans (with assistance from ChatGPT) assesses the pros and cons of utilising AI tools like ChatGPT to produce magazine articles and scripts for broadcasts

Using AI to write magazine articles and scripts for broadcasts presents several potential dangers that merit careful consideration. While AI can enhance productivity and provide valuable tools for content creation, its application in journalism and editorial contexts raises significant concerns about accuracy, originality, and ethical integrity.

Accuracy and Misinformation

One of the primary dangers of using AI for writing magazine articles is the risk of disseminating inaccurate or misleading information. AI systems, such as those based on large language models, generate content based on patterns learned from vast datasets. However, these models can sometimes produce incorrect or misleading information because they do not inherently understand the truth or context. When AI generates articles, it may include factual inaccuracies, outdated information, or unverified claims. This can contribute to the spread of misinformation, particularly if the AI-generated content is not carefully fact-checked by human editors.

Lack of Originality

AI-generated content often relies on existing sources and patterns found in training data. As a result, it can lack originality and creativity, producing articles that are formulaic or repetitive. Magazine articles typically benefit from unique perspectives, creative storytelling, and nuanced analysis—all of which are challenging for AI to achieve consistently. Relying on AI for article writing may lead to homogenised content that lacks depth and fails to engage readers in meaningful ways. This could undermine the distinct voice and originality that are hallmarks of quality journalism and editorial content.

Ethical and Transparency Issues

The use of AI in writing magazine articles raises important ethical questions. For instance, readers might be unaware that an article was generated by an AI, leading to issues of transparency. Ethical journalism involves clear disclosure of authorship and the sources of information, but AI-generated content can blur these lines. If AI is used to produce articles without acknowledging its role, it can mislead readers about the origins of the content and the reliability of the information presented.

Bias and Representation

AI systems are trained on datasets that may contain biases reflecting societal prejudices. As a result, AI-generated articles can inadvertently reinforce these biases, presenting skewed or one-sided perspectives on issues. This can be particularly problematic in magazine journalism, which often tackles diverse and sensitive topics. Ensuring balanced representation and avoiding perpetuation of stereotypes require human judgment and sensitivity—qualities that AI lacks. Consequently, relying heavily on AI for article writing might lead to biased or insensitive coverage.

Security and Manipulation Risks

AI-generated content can be manipulated to produce fake news or propaganda. Malicious actors might exploit AI tools to generate misleading articles that serve specific agendas or to create content that undermines public trust. The ability to rapidly produce large volumes of content with AI makes it easier to spread false information or incite divisive rhetoric, posing risks to information integrity and public discourse.

In summary, while AI offers tools that can enhance content creation, its use in writing magazine articles presents several dangers, including the risk of inaccuracy, lack of originality, ethical concerns, bias, impact on employment, and potential for misuse. Balancing the benefits of AI with these risks requires careful oversight, transparent practices, and a commitment to maintaining the quality and integrity of journalistic content.

So where do we go from here?

The more I explore generative AI, the more I realise we need to address this development proactively to avoid the potential risks, which could range from minor embarrassments to serious issues like plagiarism or copyright lawsuits. More positively, we might discover in the process valuable and productive ways to leverage this new tool for the station’s benefit.

Generative AI is a fast-evolving field that will necessitate well-defined ‘guardrails’ if we decide to implement it at 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. For example, our Style Guide, primarily focused on grammar and punctuation consistency, will need to be revised to address the wider implications our research has identified. There will be issues of trust and transparency – our readers and listeners will want to know that humans are still in charge.

Are we up for the challenge? I sincerely hope so. Watch this space – there will be a lot more to say on the subject!

Gabriel Fauré: The French Schumann

November sees the centenary of the death of the French composer, Gabriel Fauré. The man was something of an enigma, largely regarded as easy-going and friendly, but essentially a recluse. He preferred his own company, despite a broken engagement, a marriage and several children. He spent days and sometimes weeks away from home, composing in out of the way hotels and country inns. When riled, he could become quite the martinet. During his 15-year reign as director of the Paris Conservatoire he became so contemptuous of that institute’s preference for what he called ‘operatic politics’ as opposed to sound musical education, that he adopted such stringent measures the staff gave him the nickname Robespierre after the dictatorial leader of the French Revolution.

Born in the foothills of the Pyrenees in 1845, the sixth son of a school inspector, he was farmed out as a child to a nearby family as the Fauré family home was overcrowded. Little is known of his early encounters with music, but when he was 11, he was spotted by the Swiss composer Louis Niedermeyer, who had been lured to Paris by Rossini, and who was apparently so impressed with the boy that he offered him a scholarship at his school. When he was 15, he acquired Camille Saint-Saens as a teacher, the latter being only 10 years his senior.

Like many French composers, Fauré’s first jobs were as an organist. Firstly in Brittany, from where he was sacked after four years for turning up at church one Sunday morning in full evening dress, straight from a late night early morning party. Returning to Paris he became second organist to Charles-Marie Widor at Saint-Sulpice before moving on to the Madeleine as choirmaster, following the recently departed Saint-Saens. Throughout all this time he seems to have composed very little.

His first appearance as a composer had been in 1865, aged 20, with a group of songs, and it was in this field that he was to make his greatest fame. The beauty of his songs was to earn him the title of the ‘French Schumann’ and the French music critic Emile Vuillermoz, himself once a pupil of Fauré’s, said this of him: “He created an altogether modern, logical, well throughout style, never sacrificing to passing fashions, but steadily tending towards greater security and simplicity. The easy grace of his art is deceptive; never did a creative artist present us with subtler and more powerful achievements.”

By the 1890s the game of musical chairs in Paris was at its height. When the French composer Ernest Guiraud died in 1891, Fauré was named his successor as Inspector of the music conservatoires in the French provinces. Four years later Théodore Dubois moved from the post of organist at the Madeleine to take the directorship of the Paris Conservatoire following the death of Ambroise Thomas. Faure succeeded him as organist and was at last admitted as a teacher to the Conservatoire, a move which Thomas had vehemently opposed while he was alive, believing Fauré to be ‘too modern’. Finally, in 1905 he succeeded Dubois as director where he remained for the next 15 years, becoming increasingly deaf as the years went by.

In 1920, at the age of 75, he retired from the Conservatoire, whereupon he was given the Grand Cross of the Legion d’Honneur, a rare honour for a musician. The French President held a special concert of his works in his honour. One local paper, reporting on the event, wrote: “It was a poignant spectacle, indeed: that of a man present at a concert of his own works and able to hear not a single note. He sat gazing before him pensively, despite everything, grateful and content.”

Due in part to a lifetime of heavy smoking, Fauré died of pneumonia on 4 November 1924, and was given a state funeral at his old church, the Madeleine.

John Sangster: Remarkable Australian Jazz Character

Louise Levy investigates one of the seminal influences of Australian Jazz

I heard recently that a musical version of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings will be opening at the State Theatre next year. It reminded me of the Peter Jackson movies I saw in the early 2000s, with soundtracks composed by Canadian Howard Shore. But long before the movies, an Australian composer and multi-instrumentalist, John Sangster, had already embarked on his own unique musical journey into Tolkien’s fantastical universe.

Sangster was born in Melbourne on 17 November 1928, attending primary school in Vermont and then Box Hill High School. In his teens, he discovered jazz and taught himself to play the trombone and cornet. At the beginning of 1946, he started studying civil engineering, however, in September that year, an incident between Sangster and his mother led to her death.

I became curious about him, his character, and his jazz music. In 1948, his fiery playing established him as a force in Australian jazz and had him performing at the third annual Australian Jazz Convention, an event that is still running today, the longest-running jazz convention in the world.

In 1950, jazz pioneer Graeme Bell invited Sangster to join his band, leading to extensive tours across Europe, Asia, and Australia. Bell was working to develop a distinctive Australian jazz sound, and Sangster played a crucial role in this evolution. His versatility was impressive. He learned vibraphone, drums and percussion.

At the beginning of 1960, Sangster moved to Sydney and worked with Don Burrows. By 1962, he lived above the El Rocco Jazz Cellar, forming his own quartet and releasing his first album The Trip. He rejoined the Don Burrows Group briefly in 1967 when they represented Australia at Expo 1967 in Montreal, Canada.

I am always interested in the history of the Australian Broadcasting Commission and discovered that in 1966, Sangster and his trio freely improvised over pre-recorded percussion. His participation in Donald Westlake’s Best of Both Worlds concerts in that year, combining the Don Burrows Quartet with the New Sydney Woodwind Quintet, included Sangster’s own compositions.

By the end of the decade, he was composing and playing for projects, ranging from commercials to television and films. He worked for Tully, a rock band, which provided the musical backing for the original production of Hair in Sydney.

In 1971, he composed an album, Australia and All That Jazz, that was commissioned to accompany nature documentaries. It was evocative, blending nature sounds with jazz compositions. The music was recorded by some of world’s best jazz musicians and released by Cherry Pie, the label set up by Don Burrows and Graeme Rule to act as an outlet for Australian jazz musicians.

Two years later, he composed The Hobbit Suite, which was followed by three double albums inspired by The Lord of the Rings (1975-77) and Landscapes of Middle Earth (1978). Sangster had been profoundly affected by Tolkien’s books, which he first read in the late 1950s, and was disappointed by what he perceived as a lack of suitable music for them. He decided to write his own interpretation, creating an expansive, eclectic musical landscape influenced by Tolkien’s mythical world.

Over his lifetime, Sangster released 27 albums, each showcasing his distinctive style. He was credited 164 albums, including instruments, performance, writing and arrangement.

Sangster was an eccentric, creative and intellectual, who was a vital figure in the development of Australian jazz. His contributions to music, and his adventurous spirit, continue to resonate with those who discover his work.

Contemporary jazz is about progression and finding new ways to make its music touch hearts and minds. The great thing is that it does not like to sit still for long, and its musicians are continuously devising ways to provide a unique listening experience. Sydneybased contemporary jazz quintet Jiem exemplify this premise in their latest release. Co-led by the horn players Tessie Overmeyer and Miles Rooney, and supported by Harry Birch on bass, Matthew Harris on piano and Ryu Kodama on drums, this quintet pulsates with an energy of discovery throughout a range of compositions from powerful ballads to complex improvisational pieces that highlight

BOOK REVIEW

Big Music

It is not often that Australian fiction takes us into the worlds of classical music or academia. In Big Music, Gillian Wills invites us to explore both. Through the trials and triumphs of Beatrice Snow, musician, horse-lover and Dean of Turalong Music School, the behind-the-scenes conflicts of this relatively closeted sphere of our contemporary culture are exposed.

Gillian Wills is an accomplished music reviewer and memoirist, and this is her debut as an author of fiction. Her background as a professional musician and academic shines through in her writing. If, as a consequence, some overly technical explanatory passages and a generous sprinkling of specialised music references occasionally intrude on the story’s flow, this is balanced by the authenticity of Big Music’s ensemble cast of characters.

The student musicians who rise above their teenage scattiness to achieve moving and nuanced performances,

the abundant talents and collective strength of the ensemble. The eight original compositions provide an array of rhythmic and harmonic variations for the musicians, shifting between the extremes of quiet intensity and audacious ferocity. Favourite tracks include King Rat, with its throughcomposed melody and a stand-out solo from Overmeyer, and the melodic Through a Lens, showcasing two of this country’s supremely virtuosic players, weaving in and around the pianist’s tight melodic manipulations, with a premature veteran-like ease.

– Barry O’Sullivan

the music school staff who jostle for personal prestige and ever-diminishing resources, the soloist and conductor who disagree violently over tempo and interpretation – all these are instantly recognisable to anyone who has experienced the real-world environment of a tertiary music school.

Beat, the novel’s protagonist, is particularly well-crafted. Both visionary and pragmatist, her combination of strength and vulnerability is immensely appealing. Beat’s personal and professional journey is reminiscent of those in much-loved British ‘Aga sagas’, but, in Big Music, Wills takes her readers to quintessentially Queensland places and spaces. Having ventured into fiction writing for the first time, it will be interesting to discover whether, in the tradition of her overseas counterparts, Wills finds other equally intriguing stories to explore.

High Five: Drummer Laurence Pike

Barry O’Sullivan talks to one of Australia’s most respected creative musicians, the prolific drummer/ composer/producer Laurence Pike. Along with his solo releases for the UK’s Leaf Label, Pike is a member of Warp Records alumni PVT, electronic jazz trio Triosk, the UK’s Szun Waves, and the legendary US/ Australian avant-punk group LIARS.

Laurence’s work explores the language of improvisation within disciplines, emphasising presence and experience through real-time composition, drawing on a musical value system developed over two decades.

He has also produced and performed two acclaimed duo albums with legendary jazz pianist Mike Nock, as well as working with artists as diverse as Bill Callahan, Daniel Johns (Silverchair), and in the regular groups Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders and Sarah Blasko.

When did jazz music first enter your life and who were the musicians that influenced and inspired you?

I have always been a voracious listener to a broad range of music, ever since I was a kid. I started playing the drums at age ten. When I went to high school, I found myself accelerated to the senior big band and suddenly had to contend with this new musical concept of swing music. In particular, I remember the band played arrangements of Stompin’ at the Savoy and Lil’ Darlin which as a twelve-yearold, I found entrancing.

I was lucky to have an older next-door neighbour, Sam Lipman, studying jazz saxophone and guitar. Sam was probably my first musical mentor, and I would credit him with introducing me to jazz. When I was thirteen, he gave me a cassette with the album Kind of Blue on the A-side and 58 Miles on the B-side, which for me completely changed everything musically. From that moment, I became obsessed with the music of Miles Davis who remains a great touchstone in music for me. Through Miles’ music, one can connect the dots to many of the jazz musicians who have had a huge influence on me e.g. John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Jack De Johnette, Keith Jarrett etc.

When did you decide on a musical career and where did you study?

By the time I was fifteen or sixteen, I had decided that music was what I wanted to do with my life. I completed two years of my Bachelor of Music in Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, but being so young I just wanted to be out of school and deferred my studies. Once I was out in the world performing, though, I didn’t think about returning and never did. I got a job at a record store instead when I was nineteen, and probably learned as much if not more about music and people in those two years of retail than I did at the Con. As a listener, I would still consider myself a perpetual student.

You perform in a wide variety of genres of music. Can you name some of them and describe how each experience differs for you?

I’m at a point where I try not to compartmentalise the music that I make so much. I used to do this when I was younger to manage all my interests and feel I was giving

them my best attention. But as I’ve got older, I realise that things like genre don’t mean that much. Certainly, this is a broader reflection of the times as well. I think of it more like musical tributaries leading into the same river, out to the same ocean. Largely my music these days deals with the language of improvisation, and how to interpret each scenario drawing on the values and sounds I’ve absorbed as a listener.

What are your current musical projects and how have they evolved and progressed?

For the last few years, I’ve been busy documenting a body of solo music, which I started pursuing to consolidate the essence of what I wanted to hear on the instrument, and how I could feel musically at home in the world. It’s process-based music that blurs the lines between improvisation and composition, and it also incorporates my interest in using electronics and the studio as a tool to bring unexpected dimensions to acoustic improvisation. It started as a performance experiment and has since developed throughout four studio albums to incorporate a chamber choir on my latest release, The Undreamt-of Centre. More recently I’ve been performing very regularly with the quartet called BELIEVE, exploring free group improvisation. What are your other interests outside of the music world?

I like collecting ECM albums, running, Japanese food, cats, Star Trek, and watching tennis. But to be honest, I do very little of these compared to the amount of time I spend listening to music.

Laurie Smith talks to the 2MBS programmer with a deep love of sacred music

Did you have a musical upbringing?

My passion for music when I was just three or four led to piano lessons. My mother encouraged my interest, relying on ABC programs like Kindergarten of the Air, Singing with Choirs and The Argonauts that I embraced with great enthusiasm. My father, though untrained, sang VERY well.

We were a churchgoing family; the church had a good choir, excellent organist, and musicloving rector. When I was old enough, I joined the choir and learned the organ. I played and sang a lot during my schooldays at Abbotsleigh and even conducted a choir in competition.

How did you first come to 2MBS?

I became a listener after hearing about the station from a friend. Then, in 1981 I was appointed Music Education Producer on a small salary and, a few years later, was asked to be Program Producer, a demanding but satisfying position.

By 1986, I was starting to miss face-to-face teaching, so I resigned to become Director of the Chapel Choir at Knox Grammar School. I was also lecturing at WEA and later with the University of Sydney’s Continuing Education program, and for many years also taught piano, singing and musicianship at home.

All this time, Ann Ramsay was doing a program called Evensong on Sunday evenings. I became her understudy marking my start as a volunteer. I remain one today and I’m still enjoying my role as a programmer!

Your husband is also a volunteer?

Yes. Ten years ago, Stephen came with me to an Open Day at 2MBS where, for fun, visitors could ‘audition’ in the

studio. Stephen had a go and was then approached by Ross Hayes to do a serious audition. He passed, was trained by Andrew Dziedzic, and now broadcasts most weeks. He is not a trained musician but over the years has become increasingly knowledgeable about music, and we certainly share a love of sacred music. Stephen is also now the Chairman of the charity that puts on The Messiah every Christmas in the Sydney Town Hall.

How have your tastes evolved over the years?

Well, of course they have broadened! My lasting passion is sacred music. By the time I finished my Honours degree in Music at Sydney University, I loved early music, Baroque music, opera, and oratorios. Vocal and choral music especially stirred me, and still does. Bach had become my favourite composer. I admired his intellect and amazing musicianship, and this was strengthened after performing his St Matthew Passion with several fine conductors.

What about more contemporary music?

Peter Sculthorpe was a lecturer and thesis supervisor, but I never really enjoyed ‘modern music’ of the early 1960s as some composers seemed to compete to create the most dissonant sounds.

I enjoyed studying 20th century English composers such as Delius, Britten, and Walton but only Britten — whose work I still think of as an acquired taste — became a favourite.

For ’new’ listeners I would recommend Baroque music as it is easy to understand. Ditto for early classical. The wonderful thing about music as an art form is that there is enough for everyone to explore and enjoy!

Meg is a regular programmer for Hosanna, broadcast on Sundays at 5pm. Also, on-demand on the 2mbsfinemusicsydney.com website or app.

Penelope is besieged by suitors during the ten years that she waits for the return of her husband, Ulysses, King of Ithaca. She is weaving a shroud for her father-in-law, Laertes, and promises that she will choose between her suitors when she has finished. Each night, she unpicks the day’s weaving. Ulysses returns disguised as a beggar.

As Penelope watches from a hilltop overlooking the sea for the return of Ulysses’ ship, the beggar, claiming to be a Cretan king, tells her he has seen Ulysses alive. He offers to help Penelope defeat her suitors. The impatient suitors have arranged a wedding for Penelope in the palace hall. At the beggar’s suggestion, Penelope organises a competition to see who can draw Ulysses’ bow with the winner to be her new husband. No one succeeds until the beggar steps up and draws the bow with ease. He turns and shoots the suitors, then reveals his identity to an overjoyed Penelope.

COX: Alan Styler, bar BOUNCER: Donald Adams, bass BOX: Joseph Riordan, ten New SO of London/Isidore Godfrey. Decca 417 355-2 29

Retired military man, Sergeant Bouncer, has double-let an apartment to both James John Cox, a hatter, who works days, and John James Box, a printer, who works nights. Bouncer swaps over their personal belongings in the brief gap when neither man is home, so neither knows about the other, although they sometimes pass on the stairs, and Cox is suspicious because the room often reeks of tobacco and he wonders why his groceries keep disappearing.

Once Cox has left for work, Bouncer rearranges everything before Box arrives, settles in and sets his dinner to cook while he takes a nap. Cox has scored an unexpected day off, arrives home, removes what he takes for Bouncer's food and puts his own meal on to cook. There's a flurry of farcical action as each man repeatedly discards the other's food, before the two men suddenly come face to face. After some discussion they agree that this is all Bouncer's fault and make friends with each other.

As they chat, they discover that Cox's fiancée, Penelope Anne, whom he'd rather like to ditch, also happens to be Box's ex-fiancée, whom he has already ditched by faking his suicide. They gamble to decide who should NOT get the girl, but both men use loaded dice. A series of contradictory letters arrive which resolve to show Penelope Anne had married someone else, a Mr. Knox.

Cox and Box decide they must be long-lost brothers and, as such, they agree to share the apartment.

Colonel Fairfax is to be beheaded that day for the crime of sorcery. Wilfred, the head gaoler at the Tower of London, is in love with Phoebe. Phoebe’s brother, Leonard, has been appointed a Yeoman of the Guard. Their father, Sergeant Merryll, is anxious to rescue Fairfax who had twice saved his life in battle. He plans that Phoebe will get the key to the Fairfax’s cell from Wilfred, while Leonard and Fairfax will exchange identities. The charge of sorcery against Fairfax was made by his wicked cousin, Sir Clarence Poltwhistle, who will inherit his estate if he dies unmarried. Before he dies, Fairfax asks that he be allowed to marry any available woman who will receive 100 crowns for her assistance. His request is granted. A young singer, Elsie, needs money to buy medicine for her ailing mother. She is offered the chance to earn 100 crowns for marrying the condemned man. Her companion, a jester, Jack Point, wishes to marry Elsie but is assured that she will be widowed very quickly. Elsie is blindfolded and led off for the secret ceremony. Meanwhile Phoebe distracts Wilfred and steals his keys which she gives to her father who goes to free Fairfax. Sergeant Meryll disguises Fairfax as his son Leonard.

All is ready for the execution. Wilfred, Fairfax (disguised as Leonard) and two Yeomen go to fetch Fairfax. They return and Fairfax announces his own disappearance. Point is distraught at the escape of Elsie's husband, Wilfred is blamed, and all rush off to hunt for Fairfax. Jack Point reveals the secret wedding to Wilfred and convinces him to swear that he shot Fairfax dead as he swam across the river to escape. Wilfred agrees to save his own skin. Fairfax discovers the identity of his secret bride and, disguised as Leonard, attempts to woo her but is rejected. He is about to reveal himself when a shot is heard. Wilfred and Point declare that Wilfred has shot Fairfax so Point asks Elsie to marry him. Fairfax (still disguised as Leonard) instructs Point in the art of wooing but it soon becomes clear that he is wooing Elsie for himself and Elsie is responding. Angry and hurt, Phoebe inadvertently reveals to Wilfred that ‘Leonard’ is in fact Fairfax. In her remorse, she agrees to marry Wilfred if he remains silent. The real Leonard then returns and announces that a reprieve has come for Fairfax. When Elsie arrives for her wedding to ‘Leonard’, she learns that Fairfax lives. Fairfax arrives but the distraught Elsie does not turn to see his face. He keeps up the pretence until Elsie begs for her freedom to go to ‘Leonard’ but he refuses. Finally Elsie turns to see his face and finally recognises him. Everyone is happy except the broken-hearted Jack Point.

NELUSKO: Norman Mittlemann, bar GRAND INQUISITOR: Philip Booth, bass O/Jean Perrison.

Legato Classics LCD-116-3 1:59

The story is a fictitious episode in the life of the Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama.

In Lisbon, the Grand Admiral, Don Diego, is forcing his daughter, Inez, to marry Don Pedro instead of her true love, Vasco da Gama, who is presumed to have died during an expedition. However, the explorer returns and informs the Grand Council that he has discovered a new land. He brings Selika and Nelusko as examples of a newly-discovered race. His request to go on a new expedition to this unknown land is refused, causing da Gama to attack the Grand Inquisitor, leading to da Gama’s imprisonment.

Selika, who is the queen of her land, loves da Gama and saves him from being murdered in the prison by Nelusko. Inez agrees to marry Don Pédro if da Gama is freed. Unaware of this, da Gama gives Selika and Nelusko to Inez as slaves. Don Pedro announces he is to mount an expedition to the new lands that were discovered by da Gama. Nelusko offers to navigate.

As they near Selika’s island, Nelusko orders a course that will take the ship into an oncoming

storm so that the Europeans will be destroyed. Da Gama has followed in another ship and warns Don Pedro of the danger ahead. Instead of changing course, Don Pedro orders da Gama to be seized and chained. Don Pedro’s ship is wrecked and Nelusko leads the local people in killing the Europeans. Only da Gama is spared.

Ines and Selika were also on Don Pedro’s ship and Selika is met with a grand celebration by her people. She swears to uphold the island's laws which include the execution of all strangers. The priests intend to sacrifice da Gama but Selika saves him by saying that he is her husband. She forces Nelusko to swear that this is true. Da Gama resigns himself to this new life but, hearing the voice of Inez, who is being taken to her execution, he rushes to find her.

Selika sees the reunion of da Gama and Inez and feels betrayed but, when she realises the strength of the lovers' affection, she allows them to return to Europe, telling Nelusko to escort them to da Gama's ship. She then commits suicide by inhaling the perfume of a poisonous flower and Nelusko follows her into death.

A wandering minstrel, Lothario, sings and gypsies dance in the town square watched by the townspeople. Mignon tells Wilhelm that she was captured by gypsies as a child and he decides to purchase her freedom from the gypsies. Lothario asks Mignon to travel with him, but she loves Wilhelm. Philine, an actor, also loves Wilhelm, but she is courted by Frédéric. When Mignon sees that Wilhelm has given Philine some of the flowers that she had given him, she is jealous and Wilhelm rejects her. He and Frédéric fight over Philine.

Philine’s acting troupe sets off to perform in a baron’s castle. Lothario hears the jealous Mignon wishing that the castle would burn down and he sets fire to the conservatory not knowing that Mignon is inside. Wilhelm rushes in to save Mignon who has been overcome by the smoke. Wilhelm takes Mignon and Lothario to a castle in Italy. Antonio, an old man in the castle, relates how the castle’s previous owner had gone mad after his wife had died of grief over the loss of their young daughter. Mignon awakens and confesses to Wilhelm of her love for this strangely familiar place. He finally realises that he loves her deeply and resists Philine’s attempts to win him back. Lothario informs them that he is the owner of the castle and that returning here has restored his sanity. Mignon realises that she is his daughter. The three embrace happily.

16th century sculptor, Benvenuto Cellini, plans to elope with Teresa, daughter of the papal treasurer, Balducci, who prefers Fieramosca, the papal sculptor. Cellini has also to finish a statue commissioned by the Pope. The attempted elopement in the midst of carnival confusion is interrupted by Fieramosca, and Cellini kills one of his followers. The Pope promises pardon and Teresa if he finishes the sculpture on the spot, so he throws into the melting pot all his other works and achieves a result admired by all.

A pious parrot, Vert-Vert, in the convent at Nevers talked like a good Christian. He was sent to the convent at Nantes but acquired some sea-faring vocabulary during the sea voyage. Horrified at Vert-Vert’s foul language, the nuns sent him back to Nevers where it was impossible to make him relearn Latin. Nonetheless, the bird spent his last days embraced in solicitude and has now died. A funeral is held with an oration by Valentin who could not abide the parrot. Students Mimi, Emma and Bathilde wish to find another parrot but instead they decide on Valentin to take on the parrot’s name. He agrees because he is in love with Mimi. Two weeks earlier, Emma and Bathilde had secretly married two dragoons, Comte d’Arlange and Chevalier de Bergerac, who promise to release the girls. Vert-Vert goes to visit his sick aunt in Nevers followed by the dragoons. Vert-Vert becomes involved with a famous singer and spends his time carousing. A mysterious dragoon (Mimi in disguise) appears. The dragoons devise a plan in which Mimi will help them to rescue their wives from the convent and, in return, they will help her to win Vert-Vert.

Back at the convent, Vert-Vert confesses that he has learned to drink, curse (like the parrot) and to flirt. He demonstrates this to the horrified mistress, Mademoiselle Paturelle, and the thrilled girls. Left alone, Vert-Vert and Mimi squabble but he tells her that he has now learned about love; and knows that he only loves her, Mimi; they fall into each other’s arms. That night, amid ensuing chaos, Mademoiselle Paturelle agrees that the couples can be reunited, Mimi and Vert-Vert can marry and the remaining girls can also marry if they find suitable husbands among the dragoons.
