NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

Some things change. Others stay the same. The magazine will continue to be produced in a dual format (online and print) for February and March. From April Premium Subscribers will receive a link to download an A4 version of the Program Guide. Finally, you say. A4!

Most of the content in Fine Music Magazine is supplied by our volunteers. Some of them are programmers, others are writers. Some are a hybrid of the two. Occasionally we reproduce an article using a media release as a base. And sometimes we receive complimentary concert attendance. I intend to ‘mother’ that mix well into our transition to a fully digital product. If you are a programmer, a presenter or someone who loves to write and you can do so with a music topic in mind, I’d love to hear from you. As you are aware our programs are assembled several months ahead of publication. Programmers should be a prime source of editorial material because they know what they’ve put forward. Next comes the presenters because they spend an amount of time researching and scriptwriting. Why not embellish this and turn it into a written article?

This edition contains programs prepared from London by our dear friend Derek Parker. These were submitted months ago; long before Derek’s death last month. We have more up our sleeve, too.

Thank you to the FMM Team of assistant and sub-editors. May your 2025 be bright.

2MBS Fine Music’s 2025 Jazz Artist-in-Residence, Liz Player

And the Winner is ... 2025 Artists in Residence

The Nexas Quartet is the winner of the 2MBS Fine Music Artists in Residence (Classical) Award for 2025. It comprises saxophonists Michael Duke, Andrew Smith, Nathan Henshaw and Jay Burnes. During its year-long tenure the group will release its fourth studio album, George Gershwin – Music for Saxophone Quartets. The quartet has performed extensively, both nationally and internationally, taking the stage on its own as well as performing with other exceptional musicians. Expanding the boundaries of the saxophone repertoire and exploring different genres it will continue to promote the saxophone in chamber music during its residency at 2MBS.

The ensemble was founded in 2002 – how was the group was formed and what is your main focus?

The quartet was formed thanks to Mark Walton. The original four members (Andrew, Nathan and Jay alongside Ben Carey) came together while studying at the Sydney Conservatorium. We all knew each other, but it was Mark who said, ‘you boys are going to be a quartet now’. He gave us some music to learn and off we went. Our early years at uni were quite valuable for us as we ended up doing some 200 performances over three to four years thanks to Mark and David Miller, who ran the chamber music program at the Con while we were studying. This performance experience really moulded us as a group and led us to continue the quartet beyond university. In 2011 Ben left the group to pursue other musical interests and we asked Michael Duke, who had recently returned to Australia to take up the full time Classical Saxophone teaching position at the Sydney Conservatorium, to join us.

As an ensemble our aim is to promote the saxophone quartet and its rich repertoire. It’s such a versatile chamber music medium, with a rich sonic tapestry. We love showcasing this in concerts by programming works ranging from standard repertoire to modern music and arrangements of iconic classical works. Nexas also strives to add to the repertoire by approaching composers to write for the ensemble.

What has influenced you and what are the challenges in creating and performing your music?

As a group we value the work done by other saxophone quartets such as Aurelia, Habanera and the Marcel Mule Quartet. But we are also influenced by many non-saxophone artists – as evidenced by our Piazzolla, Weill and Gershwin albums. In essence, we are influenced by all manner of things. This is why we also ‘borrow’ many classic works such as Ravel’s String Quartet or Debussy’s Clair de Lune and adapt them. One of the biggest challenges we face is that we are often told that the ‘saxophone is just a jazz instrument’

Catherine Peake interviews the Nexas Quartet

and are immediately pigeonholed as a jazz group before people even hear us play. We revel in the reactions of these audience members once they hear us and comment that they ‘never thought a saxophone could sound like that, let alone four of them’. While it is true that the saxophone is heavily associated with jazz music, it originally started as a classical instrument, the earliest example being its inclusion in Hector Berlioz’s Chant Sacré (1842).

You often play new compositions. Can you tell us about some of the works you have performed?

We have enjoyed working on and performing works

by Australian composers. Our first album (Current) features exclusively new Australian music, including the work of composers such as Elena Kats-Chernin, Daniel Rojas, Matthew Orlovich, Matthew Hindson and Lachlan Skipworth. We were fortunate to perform Kats-Chernin’s Next Chapters, a concerto for saxophone quartet and orchestra, with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra. We are currently in the process of recording some new Australian works, most notably Carl Vine’s Sawtooth, which was written especially for us, and Lyle Chan’s In Media Res.

Nexas has played in a many interesting venues and locations. What are some of the more unusual places in which you have played?

We get to perform in some amazing venues such as the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Recital Centre. One of the more unusual venues was in Townsville where we performed on a beach on Orpheus Island during the Australian Chamber Music Festival. Beautiful views, but very surreal. Uluru is another amazing location we got to perform at.

You will be releasing your fourth studio album, George Gershwin – Music for Saxophone Quartets – in 2025. What can we expect to hear?

We look forward to sharing this new album. It features many iconic works by Gershwin, such as An American in Paris, Summertime and a rather underrated work, Lullaby, all of which we have especially adapted for the quartet. The album also features some of our dear long-time musical collaborators such as Peter Coleman-Wright, Cheryl Barker and Daniel Rojas in a medley of Gershwin numbers and pianist extraordinaire Gerard Willems as soloist on our arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue

Can you tell us about other future plans for Nexas Quartet?

We’ve been together for over 20 years now yet we have so much more music to explore and perform. We will continue to champion the saxophone quartet and seek to expand the repertoire by commissioning new works and re-imagining the classic repertoire.

Recorded by 2MBS

Broadcast recordings of concerts have played an important role in the programming of 2MBS since its foundation.

These recordings, made mainly in the Sydney area, have demonstrated the station’s support for local talent and provided a showcase for local musicians, composers and venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, as well as musical organisations ranging from societies like the Sydney Mozart Society to organisations like Musica Viva.

The recordings not only reflect the quality of local artists, they created valuable publicity for concerts, largely in the Sydney area but occasionally in venues outside of the city.

This important task was enabled by the outside broadcasting experience of a few key volunteers who had had professional experience with organisations like the ABC and BBC, but it also depended on the willingness and ability of others to be trained in the technology and mentored while learning. The placement of microphones and liaising with the artists being recorded and with the venue were vital in ensuring the smoothness of the operation.

Volunteers also edited the recordings and provided notes about the venue, the event, the works performed and the performers.

Naturally this involved the station investing in the equipment necessary to ensure the highest possible standard of recordings and the integration of our equipment with the venues’ sound systems.

On some occasions the station recorded concerts in its own performance studio, with or without an audience, to showcase the talents of local artists. In its early days 2MBS produced long playing records, and later CDs, supporting both the artists and Australian composers, several of whom have been patrons of the station. Examples include recordings by Elena KatsChernin, Anne Carr-Boyd, Dulcie Holland, Don Banks and Miriam Hyde among many others.

The station has also recorded its Young Performers’ Award and its Stefan Kruger Scholars and artistsin-residence, enhancing the careers of rising young artists and demonstrating its commitment to promoting and supporting them.

The resulting recordings of thousands of concerts over the years has created a sound archive of some truly magical performances around Sydney. In most cases, they are the only record.

Beyond Sydney, for some years volunteers attended the high-quality Huntington music festivals in Mudgee and recorded the concerts there – with the added benefit of a sponsorship for the station from the Huntington Winery – including the supply of some wonderful wine over many years.

The result is a random but wonderful archive of music that is only available to our listeners; a tangible living proof of our station’s support for local composers, artists, venues and societies that would never have existed but for this initiative.

New programs in 2025

The Romantic Century (Thursdays 8pm – 10pm) will take listeners on a captivating weekly journey through the emotional intensity and innovation of the music of the 19th century, the era dominated by the great Romantic composers. This program explores the sweeping grandeur of symphonies, concertos, and operas by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner, among others. Each episode delves into the distinct musical language of this transformative period, where personal expression, dramatic contrasts, and lush orchestrations were pushed to their limits. Whether it’s the stormy passion of a late Beethoven string quartet or the poetic lyricism of Schubert’s Lieder, The Romantic Century immerses audiences in the drama, power, and beauty of one of music’s most exhilarating and revolutionary periods.

Musicians of Choice (Saturdays 10am – 11.30am) offers a fresh and dynamic look at the world of classical music through the eyes of the artists themselves. Each week, the program features a different musician or ensemble, allowing listeners to explore their unique artistic journeys, musical preferences, and creative processes. Whether it’s an acclaimed soloist, a renowned conductor, or an innovative ensemble, this program provides an intimate look at the personalities and talents behind the music. Musicians of Choice highlights the diverse voices shaping today’s classical music scene. Expect to hear performances that reveal the artistry and passion driving these musicians.

Small Forces (Saturdays 9:05am – 10am) invites listeners to enjoy the intimate and expressive world of chamber music. The program celebrates the beauty and intricacy of smaller ensemble works, offering a diverse mix of string quartets, wind quintets, duets, and solo performances. From Beethoven’s groundbreaking quartets to the lush textures of French impressionism, each episode highlights the rich tapestry of sound that only smaller ensembles can offer. Small Forces offers an ideal soundtrack to begin the day, with music that speaks directly to the heart and mind.

Each piece is carefully chosen to showcase the delicate balance between individual virtuosity and collective harmony.

Music of the 18th Century (Sundays 10am –12pm) offers a deep dive into the rich musical landscape of the late Baroque and early Classical periods, a time of remarkable artistic and cultural transition. This two-hour program features music from iconic composers such as Handel, Vivaldi, Haydn, and Mozart, along with lesser-known gems that defined the era. The program moves beyond the traditional Classical Era format to explore the nuanced developments that bridged the Baroque and Classical styles. The distinct textures of Baroque counterpoint gradually give way to the clarity and elegance of the Classical forms, culminating in the lyrical and symphonic heights of Mozart and his contemporaries.

2025 Emerging Artists

Each year, 2MBS Fine Music Sydney offers two artist-in-residence opportunities and two 12-month scholarships for emerging artists. The residencies and scholarships offer both jazz and classical artists the chance to develop their projects through access to Fine Music Founders’ Studio and marketing opportunities on-air and online.

2MBS has selected one classical ensemble and one jazz artist for the Artists-in-Residence Program this year, and awarded the classical 2MBS Stefan Kruger Scholarship and Ken Weatherley Jazz Scholarship to emerging young artists.

The Classical Artist-in-Residence for 2025 is the saxophone quartet Nexas Quartet. Comprising saxophonists Michael Duke, Andrew Smith, Nathan Henshaw, and Jay Byrnes, the quartet is known for its creative approach to chamber music and expanding the boundaries of the classical saxophone repertoire. Founded in 2002, the ensemble experiments with different musical genres, delivering innovative interpretations and bold programming. Nexas will release their fourth studio album, George Gershwin – Music for Saxophone Quartets, during their time at 2MBS.

As 2MBS Fine Music’s 2025 Jazz Artist-in-Residence, Liz Player will rehearse with her quartet and record her debut studio album Echoes Of Place: An Australian Song Cycle during her 12-month tenure. Having released her first live album in 2023, she will engage in further studio recording at 2MBS, developing international competition and masters degree application videos.

Tiana Young
Andrei Hadap

The two scholarships offered by 2MBS Fine Music Sydney were established by generous bequests from music-loving benefactors Dr Stefan Kruger, with the Stefan Kruger Scholarship, and Ken Weatherley, with the Ken Weatherley Jazz Scholarship. The recording and marketing opportunities provided by 2MBS Fine Music Sydney will enable the scholarship winners to further their careers in classical music or jazz.

Andrei Hadap, pianist, composer, teacher and scholar, has won the classical 2025 Stefan Kruger Scholarship. With an interest in a broad range of keyboard music, Andrei made his orchestral debut with Brahms’ First Piano Concerto in 2018 and was Pinchgut Opera’s inaugural Continuo Fellow, performing regularly with the Orchestra of the Antipodes. He says of the Kruger Scholarship, that ‘this incredible opportunity will allow me to dedicate myself to composing, performing, and recording major works for piano and organ.’

The Ken Weatherley Jazz Scholarship for 2025 has been won by Tiana Young who trained in Jazz Voice at

the Sydney Conservatorium. As well as performing, Tiana composes within the jazz tradition, approaching her compositions from a contemporary perspective and using a variety of harmonic influences. Working with her musical and writing collaborators Andrew Scott (piano) and James Shortland (double bass), Tiana will use the scholarship to work on her debut album Serendipity, expanding her trio to involve other jazz musicians in its development.

Fine Music Magazine will be interviewing the winners of each award over the next four months, and an article on each winner will be published in the magazine. This month, the members of the Nexas Quartet are interviewed, with the article appearing on page 4. Music from the winners of this years’ emerging artists awards will be presented on Showcase February 9th at 3pm.

Pianist-composer Casey Golden High Five

Barry O’Sullivan poses five questions to the artist

Born in Sydney into a family of musicians, Casey Golden is the grandson of internationally renowned jazz trumpeter Bob Barnard. He studied classical piano from a young age and was exposed to a wide variety of music through his mother’s vast record collection. He has a Bachelor of Music (Jazz performance (UNSW)) and has studied with Australian pianists Alister Spence and Matt McMahon and international artists including Gerald Clayton, Lage Lund and Aaron Parks.

You grew up in a musical family. What were your earliest musical influences and listening experiences?

There was a lot of music played in the house when I was a kid. I have distinct memories of hearing Beethoven’s 6th, Otis Redding and my grandfather Bob’s album Just Foolin Around quite a lot when I was young. A few other early listening experiences that stuck with me are my mum getting my brother and me to guess the composer of whatever was playing on the radio; my grandma playing Mahalia Jackson at Christmas time and my brother and uncles showing me stuff on the piano when I was young.

As far as earliest musical influences go, those came a little later. The big ones that stand out are Oscar Peterson and the Beatles. I’m sure I was influenced a lot by the other musicians in my family, especially my brother and whatever he was listening to, but Oscar and the Beatles are the first artists I really remember trying to emulate.

Your trio were the 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Jazz Artists in Residence (AIR) in 2018. How did that experience help shape your musical path?

It was a great experience being Artists in Residence at Fine Music. It was a creative time for us. It was actually with my co-led project States of Chaos, not my trio. I mention this because the music in that band is looser and more open ended than my projects. It’s a

band that’s really about the three personalities of the band members, so the AIR program was great because it gave us the time to explore this and develop some group-playing concepts. Our album 3, which we made at that time in the Founders’ studio, is the culmination of all this. I can’t speak for Ed and Bill, but making that album was a big confidence boost for me as it was unlike anything I’d done before and the result was far beyond my expectations.

As a musician you perform in a variety of ensemble situations as well as playing solo. How do you adapt your strong personal musical visions to these situations?

With any musical situation I think you need an idea of how you want to sound within that context. I have my tastes and goals of how I want to sound on my instrument so I’m always working towards this, But I also use my judgement to play in a way that satisfies what the bandleader/project needs and keep it tasteful. Assuming it’s a creative project (as opposed to more of a ‘work’ context, where I’ll just do what I’m told), I’m conscious of trying to contribute as an artist rather than just a piano player. There’s a quote from the great drummer Billy Hart that I like: “Every time you play, play something only you can play.” I’m essentially trying to do this without losing sight of the responsibilities of whatever the situation is.

What is your current musical project and how did it come about?

My current project is my new album, Present Day. It’s a piano/drums duo recording featuring me and the great drummer Evan Mannell, with a string trio and some additional keyboards and synthesisers added after the initial duo recording. It’s a project that took me a few years to formulate. I always wanted to do a duo recording with a drummer and the idea of using strings on something has been in the back of my mind for a long time. I had a few sections of compositions that I thought would work great arranged for strings and drums. Once I fleshed these out into full tunes the idea for the project started to take shape and more and more tunes started to come out. I’ve always loved Evan’s playing and was delighted when he was keen

to be a part of it. He understood what I was going for right away and is a big part of the sound of the album. I’m really proud of it, I think it has a unique character. What information or advice about your career do you wish you’d received at the beginning of it but didn’t?

No matter what the song is, learn the melody well. I think I probably was told this at some point when I was younger, but I needed it drilled into me. It took me a few years to take it to heart.

“Beneath the blazing sun’s relentless heat”

The words behind Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Since the dawn of time music has been used to accompany dance and storytelling, so it comes as no surprise that composers started producing what we know as ‘program music’, music written to depict various activities, or even certain moods and emotions. Pastoral scenes were a particular favourite, as were storms and birdlife. And so it was with Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a set of four concerti written 300 years ago this year. But did you know that these famous and popular concerti had words to them? Not in the sense that they were designed to be sung along with the music, but to act as a descriptive base for each of the movements.

The words themselves came from four sonnets published alongside the music by Estienne Roger in Amsterdam in 1725, but no name was attributed to them. Musicologists have now concluded that it was Vivaldi himself who wrote them, making him as much a wordsmith as he was a musician. And though the sonnets may not be quite up to the standard set by William Shakespeare, they run a close second. Take, for example, the opening of the Concerto No 2 in G minor, ‘Summer’: “Beneath the blazing sun’s relentless heat men and flocks are sweltering, pines are scorched. We hear the cuckoo’s voice; then sweet songs of the turtle dove and finch. Soft breezes stir the air, but threatening north wind sweeps them suddenly aside. The shepherd trembles, fearful of violent storm and what may lie ahead.”

I particularly like the words on which the second movement is based – they could be describing a scene in Australia: “His limbs are now awakened from their

repose by fear of lightning’s flash and thunder’s roar, as gnats and flies buzz furiously around.”

The sonnets suffer somewhat in translation, but in the original Italian they fairly sing.

Concerto No 1 in E major, ‘Spring’, begins: “Springtime is upon us. The birds celebrate her return with festive song, and murmuring streams are softly caressed by the breezes. Thunderstorms, those heralds of Spring, roar, casting their dark mantle over heaven, then they die away to silence and the birds take up their charming songs once more.”

Concerto No 3 in F major, which celebrates Autumn, begins, as do all the others, with an allegro. The words record that “[t]he peasant celebrates with song and dance the harvest safely gathered in. The cup of Bacchus flows freely, and many find their relief in deep slumber.”

And finally, Concerto No 4 in F minor, ‘Winter’: “Shivering, frozen mid the frosty snow in biting, stinging winds; running to and fro to stamp one’s icy feet, teeth chattering in the bitter chill.”

Each of the four concerti follows the same pattern –three movements: an opening allegro followed by an adagio or largo and ending with another allegro. It’s well worth trying to get hold of a copy of the sonnets and follow them along with the music.

Many composers through the ages, among them Gregor Werner and Johann Caspar Fischer in the 17th century and Tchaikovsky and Glazunov in the 19th, have used the four seasons as inspiration for their work, but Vivaldi’s four violin concerti remain top of the class.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons can be heard on Sunday Special at 3pm on Sunday 23 February.

Vale Derek Parker – farewell to a man of letters

Michael Morton-Evans remembers a real gentleman

For nearly 20 years Derek Parker graced 2MBS Fine Music Sydney with his erudition, expertise and gentlemanly good manners. He was of the old school. Having been born in Looe, Cornwall, in 1932, he moved to Sydney in 2003, returning reluctantly to the UK in 2022, where he died in Brighton in January at the magnificent age of 93. After several years honing his literary abilities on various local papers, he began his TV career at the age of 26 on Television Wales and the West and from there went on to a 40-year career in freelance radio and television appearances, introducing many programmes, both for domestic radio and the BBC World Service.

He was, however, at heart a writer rather than a journalist and at 34 he took on the editorship for four years of The Poetry Review, the prestigious magazine of the British Poetry Society, founded in 1912.

Writing was his bread and butter, and over the course of the next 70-odd years he wrote over 45 books on literature, dance and opera, and co-wrote several books on astrology with his wife, Julia. His subjects ranged from the abstruse to the familiar and included perceptive insights into the life of such characters as Lord Byron, Russian dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, Nell Gwyn, Italian super lover Casanova and French philosopher Voltaire. On his move to Australia he penned volumes on Banjo Paterson, Arthur Philip and Governor Macquarie.

Derek had a mischievous mind and a keen wit. In the early 1980s, under the pseudonym William Blatchford, he claimed to have located the memoirs of Cora Pearl, an English courtesan of the French demimonde, who became well known during the period of the 2nd French Empire. By 1860 Pearl was one of the most celebrated courtesans in Paris. She was the mistress of notable aristocrats, the Prince of Orange, heir to the throne of the Netherlands, and more significantly Charles, Duc de Morny, who was the half-brother of the Emperor Napoleon III. The memoirs were sexually explicit and convinced many of their authenticity. They were a best seller and it was many years later before Derek, then president of the

Society of Authors, admitted the hoax and claimed authorship.

His love of opera and classical music drew him to 2MBS in 2005 when he offered his expertise as a seasoned radio presenter to the station, and right up until the time of his death on Thursday, January 2 he was programming beautiful and eclectic programmes from his home in the British seaside town of Brighton. His sudden departure from Sydney in 2023 came as a shock to us all and had never really been explained. I feel that he wouldn’t mind my sharing an email I got from him just a week before he died in which he said:

‘Julia’s [health] has sadly gripped her….As you will now realise, [this] was the reason we fled Australia — she has family here who could care for her if I suddenly couldn’t. I am desperately homesick for Sydney. However it’s good to keep in touch. So far I’m in pretty good fettle .’ Vale, dear friend. The world of radio and letters is the poorer for your going.

Julia and Derek Parker at his retirement function in 2023

This article, writen by his great-great grandson, appeared in the April 2016 issue of Fine Music Magazine and is reproduced here because our recently departed friend Derek Parker was to submit an article marking the passing of William Sterndale Bennett on 1 February 1875.

The undisputed head of English music for much of the 20th century became relegated to the footnotes of musical history although he was much regarded internationally in his lifetime. Composer, pianist, conductor and influential music educator William Sterndale Bennett was born 200 years ago on 13 April 1816. More recent research has shed new light on his considerable achievements not least by Henry Hadow who wrote: “Bennett found English music a barren land, enriched its soil and developed its cultivation”. In addition, the Grove Musical Dictionary states that Bennett was the most distinguished English composer of the Romantic era.

At the age of 10, having been a chorister at King’s College, he won a scholarship to the newly founded Royal Academy of Music in London where he studied violin and piano. His composition teacher, composer Cipriani Potter, gave him a thorough grounding in the works of Bach and Mozart. When Mendelssohn heard Bennett’s first Piano Concerto, he invited the 20 year old to Germany ‘not as my pupil but as my friend’. He was warmly received in Leipzig where he was greatly admired by both Mendelssohn and Schumann and his considerable talents as a pianist/composer were quickly recognised.

His three extended visits to Leipzig were to be his most prolific as a composer and by the time he returned to England in 1842, he had produced five piano concertos, a symphony, four concert overtures, three chamber works, two sets of songs and several solo piano works. These were characterised by youthful vitality, a strong sense of style, timing and economy, first rate craftsmanship and structural

finish, an individual gift of melody, an accurate and pure sense of tone colours. He was a pianist’s musician with mastery of the instrument’s potential. Above all he was poetic by nature, a miniaturist with watercolours rather than a conceiver of a grandiose canvas, and acknowledged as being among the finest embodiments of the classical spirit between Beethoven and Brahms.

His failure to sustain his early success as a composer stems from being in awe of the great masters, a need for reassurance in an atmosphere which discouraged indigenous talent and later the demands of high profile key administrative roles.

Using his remarkable skills as a pianist, he regularly performed in public and from 1843 to 1855, organised a series of Classical Chamber Concerts to explore chamber music with piano and serious piano solos, and to introduce to the London stage important artists such as Jenny Lind, Joseph Joachim and Clara Schumann.

In 1851 Bennett was appointed a Metropolitan Local Commissioner and musical Juror, alongside Berlioz, for the Great Exhibition, and the music for the opening procession was placed under his supervision.

For the 1862 International Exhibition he was commissioned to write an Ode for the opening which was later performed in Melbourne.

Music further afield

Bennett’s interest in Bach’s music can be traced back to his friendship with Mendelssohn who had rediscovered the St Matthew Passion in 1829. As a result, in 1849, Bennett founded the Bach Society and had the work translated into English. The ground breaking performance of an abridged version took place at the Hanover Square Rooms in London on the 6 April 1854 conducted by Bennett. This was the beginning of a long and distinguished history of further editions and performances of this monumental work in Britain. After succeeding Wagner in 1855, he was chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Society’s orchestra for ten years, later receiving the Society’s coveted gold medal.

Later in life Bennett returned briefly to composition with a symphony, a sonata for piano and cello, several anthems and two choral works largely at a time when he was professor of music at Cambridge where he set about raising the standards for obtaining music degrees. Then in 1866 he was appointed principal of the Royal Academy of Music in London, where his pupils included Arthur Sullivan. It was a most critical time for the Academy and through his efforts, he saved it from extinction. A scholarship and prize are still awarded there in his name. He was also an early private teacher of Hubert Parry and he greatly

encouraged the work of Charles Villiers Stanford and John Stainer. His particular interest in female musical education led him to become a founding director of Queen’s College and Bedford College in London.

William Sterndale Bennett, who was knighted in 1871, died on 1st February 1875, aged 58, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Several of his descendants entered the world of music and theatre and his substantial library is now housed at the Bodleian in Oxford.

Of his 122 works, approximately a quarter have now been recorded. This bicentenary therefore provides an opportunity to enjoy some fine music not often performed and to reflect on his contribution to the musical landscape.

- Barry Sterndale Bennett

The works of William Sterndale Bennett can be heard on Wednesday afternoons throughout February.

RECORDING REVIEWS

Chopin 4 Ballades, Barcarole and Impromptus

Alexander Boyd, piano

Claudio CR6047-2

Pianist Alexander Boyd, scion of the amazingly prolific and talented Boyd family, has broken away from the fascination with and love of Spanish piano composition that dominated his past three recordings to share with us his lifelong love of Chopin.

Playing Chopin well is not easy at the best of times and in this CD Alexander has set himself a tough musical obstacle course, which he manages to navigate with apparent ease. Chopin’s four ballades are about as complicated as was the composer’s mind, but happily Boyd doesn’t fall into the trap that Russian pianist Anton Rubenstein did when he

Chiromancy

Tim Rollinson Trio

Independent

Unlike brass and woodwind instruments, which have played pivotal roles in jazz from its inception, the guitar did not become a principal voice in the genre until the rise of jazz-rock in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Tim Rollinson’s latest album uses the classic trio format in five original compositions and some choice standards to demonstrate his knack for blending groove-driven sections with freewheeling improvisation, crafting a sonic journey that balances structure with freedom. With his stellar rhythm compatriots, Brett Hirst (bass) and Toby Hall (drums), maintaining the equilibrium with snappy pulses and fluid movements, Rollinson transitions his guitar playing skilfully from anchored grooves to untethered improvisations

played them in concert in 1885, resulting in one German critic describing him as “a musician who rushed and raved”, adding that “a slight want of polish was the natural result”. These ballades, like the barcarolle and the two impromptus that follow them, are impeccably paced and imbued with great feeling and sensitivity in the gentle parts and a degree of savagery when Chopin lets his emotions run away with him. After two albums of Albeniz and one of Granados, this offering from Boyd is a wonderful New Year’s gift.

— Michael Morton-Evans

that flow naturally. A Track Winding Back, so called because the melody bears a slight resemblance in phrasing to a Slim Dusty classic, opens the album, with the theme played out of time and soon morphing into a jazz-reggae groove. The composition Adjacent already sounds like a jazz standard, complete with a stop chorus and a drum solo on brushes. At the same time, the title track, Chiromancy, provides a showcase for bassist Hirst and for Rollinson’s nimble mastery, both as a musician and as a composer. Overall, the guitarist has created a sonic landscape that maintains an element of playfulness and variety throughout — Barry O’Sullivan

You went to air on Day 1 for 2MBS 50 years ago. What was that like?

My memory is a little hazy, but I recall being nervous. I was a hi-fi enthusiast, but it was my first time live on air. I played a selection of jazz starting with Cleo Laine’s On a Clear Day and then an album by Sydney pioneers Galapagos Duck. Sadly, the full play list is no longer with us!

How had you found your way to 2MBS?

The first Station Manager, David James, introduced me to 2MBS. We were both members of the (now long gone) Australian Tape-Recording Society. Did you originally have a musical background?

I was a member of my high school boys’ choir and remember that we ‘cut’ a 7-inch 45 RPM record at the 2GB studio in Phillip St, Sydney. I was impressed by the big reel-to-reel tape recorder there. I was already fascinated by a neighbour’s tape deck and later, with a mate, indulged this interest recording rock gigs around Wollongong.

How has your taste in music evolved over time?

It is quite diverse. In jazz, vocalists from Ella Fitzgerald to Diana Krall and the jazz-rock fusion of Dave Grusin. Music with an ‘edge’ to it gets my attention. Electronic music pioneer Isao Tomita is a favourite.

In classical, the power of Beethoven’s symphonies and the clear, lively lines of Vivaldi appeal to me equally. And I first met Bach courtesy of Jacques Loussier, so genre boundaries don’t always seem so clear.

In that vein, I recently enjoyed discovering the stripped-down sound of Musica Nuda, an Italian duo who use vocals and double bass to re-imagine pop, jazz and classical songs, with a repertoire that ranges from the Beatles to Monteverdi.

You are a hi-fi buff ... how do you feel about changing formats?

I try to keep up with the changing music formats that technology permits. Personally, I still have my triedand-true sources (now mainly CD), but my reel-to-reel collection has long gone.

The station has worked hard to add DAB+ and a digital streaming service and in 2023 launched an app so that our listeners can find us when and how they please from anywhere around the world.

What brought you back to 2MBS?

Work commitments – 40 years with Qantas – saw me drift away from the station but then in 2015 David James’ and my paths crossed again at an event at the Drummoyne Probus Club and I reconnected with the station.

I returned, initially ripping CDs when the effort to digitise our library of over 21,000 classical albums was starting and have since spent time on the Technical Committee, which I now chair. We have an incredibly talented and dedicated team of engineers, technical specialists and enthusiasts who keep us on air 24/7.

I never cease to be amazed at the dedication of volunteers. I sense a connecting thread between the embryonic organisation of 50 years ago and today’s station and enjoy contributing to that ongoing venture.

I enjoy the diversity of music we broadcast. For newcomers, I would recommend trying the wide range of jazz we play daily at noon and 7pm and in other special programs across our schedule … or on demand.

Iris is the young and innocent daughter of a blind old man, Il Cieco. She has caught the attention of Osaka, a wealthy young man. Kyoto, a pimp, promises to get her for him. Kyoto stages a puppet show and plans to kidnap her. During the puppet show, Iris is carried off and taken to Kyoto’s geisha house. Before leaving, Kyoto anonymously leaves money on Il Cieco’s doorstep, with a note

telling him where she has gone. The old man asks to be taken to search for Iris so that he can curse her.

Having lost consciousness, Iris comes to in Osaka’s rich apartment. Osaka tries to seduce her but fails. Tired and annoyed by her simplicity and innocence, Osaka tells Kyoto to get rid of her. Kyoto, hoping to make some profit, shows her off to the crowds. Her blind father is led to her. He curses and throws mud at her. In despair Iris throws herself into a sewer.

The next morning, her body is found in the sewer by ragpickers, who believing her dead, begin stealing her clothes and jewels. When they realise that she is still alive. they run away in fear. She rejoices when she feels the warm rays of the rising sun as she dies. Tendrils of flowers bear the soul of Iris to heaven.

Adam, a handsome bird seller from the Tyrol, and Christel, the postal clerk in a Bavarian village, are betrothed. When the Elector decides not to come to the town’s festival, Stanislaus, an impecunious guards officer, suggests to his uncle, Baron Weps, the Hunt Master, that he, Stanislaus, impersonate the Elector and take the money which is set aside for the festival’s ceremonial maiden.

Archduchess Marie, accompanied by Adelaide, arrives in disguise because she believes that the Elector is coming to the festival to seduce the ceremonial maiden. At the festival, Adam is informed that Christel is the ceremonial maiden. She believes that Stanislaus is the Elector. Marie, hoping to save Adam from embarrassment, offers him a bouquet of roses and Adam somehow believes himself to have been promised to Marie and Christel to the Elector. He publicly breaks off his engagement to Christel.

Christel gets permission from Marie to find Adam a job at Court. Adelaide asks the Hunt Master to arrange a marriage between herself and Stanislaus, whom she adores. Stanislaus, still pretending to be the Elector, continues to pursue Christel. When Baron Weps announces the wedding of Adelaide and Stanislaus, Christel identifies Stanislaus as the imposter. Adam believes Stanislaus has made a legitimate offer of marriage to Christel but Christel tells Adam that she is promised only to him. Adam rejects her so Christel decides to accept Stanislaus’ proposal. All turns out well when Adam and Christel finally settle their differences and resume their engagement.

The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue of Galathea and does not want to sell it to Midas, a patron of the arts. He prays to Venus, the goddess of love, for the statue to be brought to life. His wish is

granted but Galathea is unfaithful to Pygmalion with his servant, the handsome Ganymede. As well, she does not reject Midas who offers her jewellery. Pygmalion successfully implores Venus to turn her back into stone and Pygmalion sells the statue to Midas.

Having defeated Pompey’s army at Pharsalia, Julius Caesar chases Pompey to Egypt. Pompey’s son, Sextus, and his wife Cornelia, plead for peace which Caesar grants. However, army commander, Achillas, presents him Pompey’s severed head. Cornelia wants to kill herself but Curio, the Roman tribune, prevents her, admitting he loves her. Sextus swears revenge against the Egyptian King Ptolemy who betrayed his father. Meanwhile Cleopatra plans to rule in place of Ptolemy. Achillas agrees to arrange Caesar’s death in return for Cornelia’s hand. Cleopatra presents herself to Caesar as ‘Lydia’. She wins his heart and agrees to help Sextus assassinate Ptolemy but Sextus is arrested and Cornelia put in the harem. Cornelia rejects both Achillas

and Ptolemy. Sextus is freed and goes to the harem where he can ambush Ptolemy. Caesar is warned of Achillas’ plot against his life. Sextus attacks Ptolemy but is disarmed by Achillas who announces Caesar’s death and Cleopatra’s revolt. He demands Cornelia’s hand but Ptolemy rebukes him. Ptolemy’s army is victorious. Cleopatra is captured and laments her fate. Achillas, mortally wounded, gives Caesar his seal to help him get into the palace to kill Ptolemy. Before dying, he confesses that the assassination of Pompey was his idea. Caesar rescues Cleopatra and Cornelia draws a dagger on Ptolemy. However, Sextus slays him first. Cleopatra becomes queen and Caesar and Cleopatra rejoice in their love.

VULCAN/MARS: Paul Agnew, ten RIVER GOD/APOLLO: Christopher Robson, ct New London Consort/Philip Pickett. L’Oiseau-Lyre 444 336-2 1:17

An episode in the courting of Psyche by Cupid is recounted by the gods. The principal characters of Cupid and Jupiter do not sing but Venus expresses herself in speech and in song.

The unearthly beauty of Psyche, the daughter of a king, attracts the attention of the god, Cupid, who transforms himself into a handsome lover to court her. Psyche’s beauty arouses the jealousy of Venus who condemns Psyche to a series of misfortunes. The last trial set by Venus sends Psyche to the Underworld but she is rescued by Jupiter and given the status of a goddess and married to Cupid. Blow, J. Venus and Adonis. Opera in a prologue and three acts. Libretto by Anne Kingsmill (later Finch). First performed at the court of Charles II at London or Windsor, 1681.

CUPID: Nancy Argenta, sop

VENUS: Lynne Dawson, sop

ADONIS: Stephen Varcoe, bass

Nicholas Parle, hpd; London Baroque/Charles Medlam.

Harmonia Mundi HMC 901276 50 Cupid, the son of Venus, invites shepherds and shepherdesses, to enjoy pastoral pleasures. Venus, goddess of love, has fallen in love with a human, Adonis. As they prepare for lovemaking, huntsmen are heard singing of an enormous boar. Venus urges Adonis to join the hunt. In a comic scene, Cupid teaches a group of Little Cupids about the ways of love. Adonis is brought in, wounded by the boar. He dies in the arms of Venus. As a lament, she begins a funeral march, and the refrain is taken up by the pastoral characters.

TISBE: Lucia Cirillo, mezz

Glyndebourne Ch; O of the Age of Enlightenment/Vladimir Jurowski. Glyndebourne GFOCD 018-07 2:33

This is one of many versions of the Cinderella fairy-tale. The story is stripped of its magic and fantasy and the stepfather, Don Magnifico, is an impoverished aristocrat. He and the stepsisters, Clorinda and Tisbe, two ugly, gossiping snobs, treat Cinderella most cruelly. The Prince, Don Ramiro, in search of a wife, arrives at their house disguised as his valet, Dandini, and he falls in love with Cinderella. The Prince’s former tutor, Alidoro, helps Cinderella to attend the ball where the ugly sisters compete for the Prince’s attention. The Prince proposes to Cinderella, who admits she loves him, but he must find out who she is before she will be his bride. She gives him

the bracelet from her arm. When he shelters from a storm in the step-father’s house he recognises the bracelet she is wearing and produces the one she gave him and the opera ends on a happy note.
