Australia’s astonishing success at the Paris Olympics highlights what a numerically small nation can achieve, if it puts its collective mind, physical prowess (and treasure) to competing at the highest international level. Money talks, of course, but behind the dollar cost lie the social and political motivations required to ‘make it happen’ – arguably a process that reflects each nation’s social and political values.
In A Nest of Singing Birds, Ross Hayes celebrates another equally astonishing success: the large number of Australian singers who have triumphed on the world stage, received acclaim that invites comparison with the Olympian achievement, and like the Olympics, defined the social and political values of a nation that ‘punches well above its weight’
We continue to explore generative AI and its ramifications for 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. Is ChatGPT an effective tool to aid research and speed up the production of magazine articles, program scripts, and newsletter content, or is it a distraction, increasing the risk of introducing even more ‘fake news’ into our busy lives? To clarify the issue in my own mind, I wrote an experimental article last month on the subject of film composer Maurice Jarre, using the chatbot to set up the basic article, and then refining it and checking its validity. You can judge the results for yourself by comparing the unedited ChatGPT version published this month with the edited article in September’s Fine Music Magazine. In Adventures in Good Music Revisited, I pose the question: Can ChatGPT ever be as good as the legendary Karl Haas? david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

In his 1968 book, Australian Music and Musicians, music lecturer, critic and writer, James Glennon, suggested that Australia has produced so many fine singers that it could easily be called ‘a nest of singing birds’.
Well, there are the obvious members of the nest: Melba, Moncrieff, and Sutherland, but this article explores some of those other great Australian voices from the early years of Australian music who stirred Glennon to write those words.
Many years ago, I took some voice lessons with the English actress who migrated to Australia, Colleen Clifford. I remember her telling me that she had mastered all the English accents around the world –all except Australian. That remained the case until she realised that you just had to speak with your top and bottom teeth together. She went on to explain the importance of opening your mouth to be able to project with clarity. It’s clear that many Aussie singers of the past learnt that skill and used it to great effect on the world stage.
You may also remember him as Mr. Jetsam of the comical musical duo, Flotsam and Jetsam.
Staying with the men, let’s look at the phenomenon that was the baritone, Peter Dawson. In recording, Dawson, adopted several pseudonyms: Frank Danby for light songs, Will Strong for musical-hall ditties, and Hector Grant for Scottish songs. In all, he recorded about three thousand five hundred titles, and his total record sales had exceeded 12 million by 1940. Katie Moss’ Floral Dance remained his most popular recording, and as pointed out by one of our 2MBS listeners who lives in Cornwall, this song, with Peter singing, rings out every 8th May when they celebrate Helston Flora Day.
The soprano Florence Austral started singing at 17. Prof. Fritz Hart heard her in Melbourne and told her she was a ‘born Brünnhilde’ – at that time, she had no idea what he was talking about. She saw her first opera at 24 and, at 28, sang her first Brünnhilde at Covent Garden. She went on to become the greatest Wagnerian soprano of her time – all because of her big carrying voice, her high degree of musicality, and her great physical stamina.
Soprano Marie Collier is probably best known as being the substitute Tosca in Covent Garden’s famous 1965 revival of the Franco Zeffirelli production of the opera. When Maria Callas cancelled her appearances in three out of the four scheduled performances, Collier stepped in, to great acclaim. When she appeared in William Walton’s opera, Troilus & Cressida, the composer said that she was the greatest Cressida he had known.
I have selected just a few from this wonderful ‘Nest of Singing Birds’ but there are so many more of whom Australians should justifiably be proud.
If we start in the low registers there is none so notable as the bass, Malcolm McEachern. It used to be said that he sang the lowest note ever recorded; indeed, a certain dealer in the late 1930s kept one of his records handy to demonstrate to customers what he knowingly described as the ‘bass-response’ of the speakers he hoped to sell.

The choice of title for this article is deliberate. Adventures in Good Music, presented by the musicologist Karl Haas and syndicated around the world for 37 years, is widely regarded as the most successful and most widely listened-to radio program series on classical music of all time. Like him or loathe him, his programs instilled love of ‘good music’ in thousands of listeners.
In an ironic internal email, 2MBS presenter James Hunter uses ChatGPT itself, to make the point that that classical music is deeply nuanced, requiring a “profound understanding of historical context, musical theory, and cultural sensitivities.” Can relying solely on ChatGPT “capture the emotional depth and artistic nuances crucial in presenting classical music?” he asks. Putting it simply, can ChatGPT ever be as good as Karl Haas?
I decided to find out, taking Maurice Jarre, the French film music composer, as my subject.
Creating the basic article was child’s play - I Googled ChatGPT typed in 600 words Maurice Jarre, and waited approximately 20 secs as my PC churned out the text like a teleprinter.
So far, so good. Forewarned about AI’s propensity to get facts wrong, I started checking dates and names, etc. The first mistake came in the second paragraph – as far as I could ascertain, Jarre never did any work on Les Belles de Nuit; the date was wrong (1952, not 1956), and the music was written by Georges Van Parys.
The second mistake concerned the authorship of the wellknown march Colonel Bogey, used to great effect in The Bridge over the River Kwai, and attributed to Jarre. Wrong! The original Bogey march was composed by Kenneth J. Alford years before; however, there was a counter-march in the film, which was especially written by Malcom Arnold, becoming known as The Bridge on the River Kwai March – all very confusing!
The next error wasn’t so obvious. Many internet articles proclaim that Jarre’s breakthrough occurred with his collaboration with David Lean on Lawrence of Arabia, and often mention the ‘scope and grandeur of his orchestration’. The collaboration was true, but controversially, the orchestration was mainly the work of Gerard Schurmann, one of three composers initially hired to write the score. For various reasons, Jarre ended up writing all the music himself, winning his first Oscar. Schurmann himself mentions that Jarre’s orchestration was not only weak, but also difficult to understand.
The rest of the text was free of obvious bloopers, a little lifeless and bland perhaps, but considering this was the result of my first unrefined prompt, a reasonable effort. I added a few facts and observations of my own, then sat back in my chair to review it more critically. It wasn’t a literary masterpiece, but it featured workmanlike and tidy prose with correct grammar and punctuation.
So, what was my conclusion? ChatGPT is undoubtedly quick, although as Elaine Siversen and others have pointed out, the time spent checking ‘facts’ by other means may make its use counter-productive. Undoubtedly a boon for journalists under severe time pressure, the more reflective process of penning FMM articles and scripts for broadcast will undoubtedly stretch ChatGPT’s already impressive capabilities. Clearly, we are not all going to be thrown out of a job any time soon, but it’s early days still, and the technology is advancing in leaps and bounds. There is much more to be said on this fascinating topic.
Maurice Jarre was a renowned French composer known for his film scores, which have left an indelible mark on cinematic music. Born on September 13, 1924, in Lyon, France, Jarre’s early musical experiences were grounded in classical training. He studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he honed his skills in composition and orchestration, setting the stage for a prolific career that would span several decades and encompass a wide range of cinematic genres.
Jarre’s breakthrough came with his work on the 1956 film “Les Belles de Nuit,” but it was his collaboration with filmmaker David Lean that truly catapulted him into international prominence. Their partnership began with “Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957), a film that required a score both majestic and memorable to complement its epic narrative. Jarre’s composition for this film, particularly the iconic “Colonel Bogey March,” became a significant part of the movie’s success and established him as a leading film composer.
Following this triumph, Jarre continued to work with Lean on a series of highly acclaimed films. His score for “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962) is perhaps his most famous work, embodying the grandeur and mystique of the Arabian desert with sweeping, evocative themes. The score’s use of exotic instruments and expansive orchestration mirrored the film’s epic scope and played a crucial role in conveying its dramatic narrative. Jarre’s work on “Doctor Zhivago” (1965) further solidified his reputation, with a score that beautifully complemented the film’s romantic and dramatic elements.
Jarre’s approach to film scoring often involved blending traditional orchestral elements with innovative sounds and techniques. He was known for his ability to adapt his musical style to the unique requirements of each film, whether it was creating the haunting melodies for “The Night of the Generals” (1967) or the vibrant, rhythmic music for “The Man Who Would Be King” (1975). His versatility and willingness to experiment with different musical forms made him a highly sought-after composer in the film industry.
In addition to his work with Lean, Jarre collaborated with other notable directors and worked on a diverse array of films. His score for “Ghost” (1990), a romantic fantasy film, showcased his ability to evoke emotion through music, while his work on “A Passage to India” (1984) continued his tradition of crafting music that enhances the narrative and emotional depth of a film.
Jarre’s influence extended beyond film music, as he also composed for stage productions and television. His ability to create memorable themes and motifs contributed to the overall impact of the projects he worked on, demonstrating his versatility and skill as a composer.
Throughout his career, Maurice Jarre received numerous accolades for his contributions to film music. He won three Academy Awards for Best Original Score, reflecting the high regard in which he was held by the film industry. His work was also recognized with Golden Globe Awards and Grammy Awards, further underscoring his impact and legacy.
Despite his success, Jarre remained dedicated to his craft and continued to compose music for a variety of projects until his passing.
He died on March 29, 2009, leaving behind a rich legacy of film scores that continue to be celebrated and studied by musicians, filmmakers, and audiences alike.
Maurice Jarre’s music is characterized by its emotional depth, innovative use of orchestration, and ability to enhance the cinematic experience. His contributions to film music have had a lasting impact, influencing subsequent generations of composers and shaping the way music is used to support and elevate storytelling in film. His work remains a testament to the power of music in cinema and continues to resonate with audiences around the world.

October sees the 150th anniversary of the birth of the American composer, Charles Ives. It also marks the 70th anniversary of his death. Despite the fact that Ives sits nowadays among the pantheon of American classical composers, there’s no denying that he was almost totally ignored during his lifetime. Indeed, there are still those today who wonder why Ives has been elevated to such heights.
Right from his early days he was a musical iconoclast. An excellent organist, he studied music at Yale University under Harry Shelley, a pupil of Dvorak and the Professor of Music, Horatio Parker. Neither man could make head nor tail of Ives’s experimentations and struggled to keep the young man within accepted musical bounds.
He was on the whole a disappointing student, spending much of his time composing football marches, drinking songs and organ pieces. However, when he was 22, he wrote his first string quartet, and two years later his first symphony. It began in D major, but almost immediately broke away into a different key, and then several other keys followed. This was too much for the European-trained Horatio Parker, who insisted that Ives follow the accepted Germanic tradition of symphony writing. Reluctantly Ives acquiesced and rewrote the first movement. But he wasn’t happy with it and, having shown Parker that he was capable of following his rules, persuaded the professor to allow him to return the work to its original version, the one which we hear today. It may tell you something that the symphony was not actually published until 1971, 17 years after his death.
This was typical of Ives. His musical experiments took some odd detours, on one occasion getting his family members to all sing at once in different keys, and on another asking a band to separate and play in different keys and tempos to see what it sounded like. One can only imagine the cacophony!
Ives graduated from Yale, but didn’t enter the musical world. He decided to make his career in life insurance on the grounds that it was an uplifting and humanitarian calling. This was to be his primary source of income for the rest of his life.
Ives is often credited with being one of the first composers to employ techniques that would later become staples of modernist music. His compositional style was characterised by its use of dissonance and unconventional chord progressions. He was one of the earliest composers to use cluster chords – groups of adjacent notes played together to create a dense, dissonant sound. This approach can be heard in pieces like The Unanswered Question, where the interplay between the string instruments and the trumpet creates a strikingly modern sonic landscape as they operate on seemingly different levels.
His innovative use of polytonality, rhythmic complexity, and dissonance are now seen to have paved the way for future composers such as Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and even avant-garde figures like John Cage and Steve Reich. His approach to composition has cast him as a pioneer in breaking away from traditional musical constraints.
The strange thing was that Ives never seemed to care whether his work was played or not, and most of it wasn’t performed in his lifetime. He was a retiring man, so much so that he had a hidden entrance constructed so that he could come and go from his private office without being seen. By all accounts visitors were discouraged.
The outbreak of World War I, and America’s involvement, outraged Ives and he lobbied Congress to ensure that in future no declaration of war be made without a public referendum. Congress ignored him. He had worked himself up into a fury and in September 1918, aged 44, he suffered a major heart attack. He survived, but was never a well man again, dying in New York in May 1954.

A few years ago, as a volunteer for Fine Music, I was compiling a list of October birthdays. I was impressed by Jane Bunnett, a Canadian soprano saxophonist, flautist, and composer, whose work is a blend of jazz and Afro-Cuban music, which has attracted international acclaim including Grammy and Juno Awards.
Born on 22 October 1956 in Toronto Bunnett studied piano, clarinet, and flute at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music, achieving her Grade 10 piano credentials before transitioning to woodwind studies. Initially focused on classical music, Bunnett’s path took a decisive turn at the age of 19 after being inspired by live performances from jazz legends Charles Mingus and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, at San Francisco’s Keystone Korner in 1975. This exposure to jazz led her to shift her academic focus, concentrating on the jazz applications of her soprano saxophone at York University in 1979.
In the 1980s, Bunnett’s musical evolution took another significant leap when she traveled to Cuba, with her husband, trumpeter Larry Cramer. These trips sparked a lifelong fascination with Cuban music, known for its intricate rhythms and vibrant energy. Immersing herself in the local music scene, she forged deep connections with Cuban musicians, learning from them and incorporating their influences into her work.
Bunnett’s debut album, In Dew Time, released in 1988, earned a Juno nomination, recognising her as an emerging talent in Canada’s music industry. She followed this with a duet album with Don Pullen and the quintet recording Live at Sweet Basil in 1990.
However, it was the release of her groundbreaking 1992 album Spirits of Havana, featuring collaborations between Canadian and Cuban musicians, that marked her as a major figure in the fusion of jazz and Afro-Cuban music. The album received widespread critical acclaim and introduced new audiences to Cuban music.
In 1997, Bunnett continued her exploration of Afro-Cuban music with the release of Chamalongo. She noted that the album was the most passionate and powerfully felt record of her career, signifying a deepening of her connection to the music of Cuba.
Her 2000 release, Ritmo + Soul presented a fresh twist on jazz fusion. This album, which won the 2001 Juno Award for Best Global Recording, featured original compositions that blended jazz, the diverse musical influences of the band members, and Cuban music with the spiritual music of North America and Africa. Her next album, Alma De Santiago (2001), continued to focus on the music of Santiago de Cuba. This album, too, was nominated for a Juno Award and was also recognized by the Jazz Journalists Association as a nominee for Best Latin Jazz Record of 2001-02.
Another thing that I admired about Jane Bunnett was her commitment to showcasing female talent. She led the formation of Maqueque, an all-female ensemble that has become a celebrated example of jazz’s international appeal. Originally intended as a one-off project, Maqueque quickly proved to be something special. Its first album, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque (2014), won a Juno Award for Jazz Album of the Year in 2015. The band’s follow-up album, Oddara (2016), was nominated for a Grammy Award, solidifying their place in the jazz world. Two more albums have followed: On Firm Ground/Tierra Firme (2019) and Playing with Fire (2023).
Bunnett has brought Maqueque to numerous international stages, including jazz festivals in Monterey and Newport.
A five-time Juno Award winner and three-time Grammy nominee, Bunnett has also been honored with The Order of Canada, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and The Premier’s Award for Excellence.
Catherine Peake talks with Mosiac, the 10-piece jazz ensemble which has been rehearsing fortnightly in the 2MBS Founders Studio as part of the 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Artist in Residence program, designed to support Sydney jazz ensembles with active promotion and extensive rehearsal opportunities. Mosaic has also been awarded residency at Foundry 616, performing gigs to full houses, all of which we have actively promoted on air and in FMNews. Mosaic comprises co-leaders Lee Orszaczky, Chiara Minotto and Ravi Trachtenberg-Ray playing trombone, baritone sax, and piano respectively, with Braden Clarke, Sarah Morrison, Leo Marland, Lachie Eggert, Aidan Wong, James Watt and Matt Simmonds.
CP: Mosaic originated at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Can you tell us something about the musicians and how you came to form the group?
LO: Mosaic was originally formed as part of a workshop with Australian jazz heavyweights Ten Part Invention on the importance of writing and performing authentic original work. Following the workshop, Ten Part performed to a standing ovation – I remember the moment I locked eyes with Ravi, Chiara, Braden, and almost all the members of Mosaic, and feeling a shared joyful inspiration between us. Since then, we’ve had the privilege of playing with our closest friends and favourite young musicians as part of this project, … and that joyful inspiration hasn’t faded!
RT-R: I’ve always loved playing with Lee, so we wanted to push our musical boundaries and share our passion for music with each other and a band who were equally, if not more, passionate and creative.
CP: You mention that your music focuses on original Australian jazz compositions. Name some of the composers and their works you have performed...
CM: When we started out compositions came completely from the band members, with our first concert featuring works from myself, Matt Simmonds, Lee Orszaczky, Ravi Trachtenberg-Ray, Lachie Eggert, Aidan Wong and Josh Hunter. We soon realised the potential of this band as a platform to feature composers and give them a place for their music to be workshopped, played, performed
and recorded. We have also been implementing a ratio in our setlists, where we aim to perform at least 50 per cent composition by female or gender-diverse composers. Recently we’ve performed works by Katie Bombadieri, Amy Fox, Olivia Diamant, Olivia Bryant, Jennifer Gao, Eric Tsai, Thnvir Gill, Sarah Purdon and Gabriella Hill. The last three feature on our album, with their pieces 600 Omens, Showers in May, and The Princesses Picnic.
AW: I find it really gratifying to be a part of a project which puts the focus on premiering creative works from my good friends. The communal aspect is a brilliant way to help each other out by realising and strengthening our band members’ creative and unique visions.
CP: Is there a favourite kind of jazz the group likes to play?
LO: My favourite element of the Mosaic project is the way that our varied influences come together. We both get the chance to honour the jazztradition and to explore uncharted musical territory which is always exciting.
LM: When I write for Mosaic I don’t think about genre, rather a concept and how individual members would play around this, which I find quite liberating.
SM: My favourite music we play are original charts, written by people in the band, for the band. Having the opportunity to bring these musical visions to life is so enjoyable and inspiring.
MS: It never feels like there are any stylistic or genrespecific limitations put on us regarding what we play. That is what makes it such a joy to be a part of Mosaic – there is so much freedom for each member of the band to be themselves!
CP: What is your current project and what can we expect to hear?
CM: We are about to release our debut album Where We Are Now which features eight original compositions from young Sydney composers. Each of the songs on this album represent the composer, their background and influences, so as a result the album is a patchwork of styles and genres, and really reflects who we are as a band. The album includes feel-good tracks such as Ambient Sound Suite, classic blues and swing in The Bard and Chicken Burger/Not Enough Blues, a bit of free improvisation in The Princesses Picnic and Alone, and modern touches in Showers in May, Come Rain or Shine, 600 Omens and Can He Wheelie?
CP: What are Mosaic’s plans?
BC: We have been extremely fortunate to have a slot performing at the Wangaratta Jazz festival later in
November, as well as the JazzLab in Melbourne. Early in 2025 we are touring up the mid north coast to the home town of two of our members in Port Macquarie, where we plan on sharing our music as a part of our album tour. Going forward we will continue to push ourselves creatively and musically to make our contribution to the development of Australian Jazz wherever we can.
We hope to continue creating a platform for local underrepresented composers to share the stories they have conveyed through their music, and strongly advocating for and supporting emerging musical voices.
Where We Are Now will be released on all streaming services on October 13.
The album is available for preorder on mosaicjazz. bandcamp.com
Mosaic will be launching Where We Are Now at Lazybones Lounge on October 24, as well as appearing in Wollongong, Canberra, Melbourne and the Wangaratta Jazz Festival. For tickets and more information, head to mosaicjazz.com.

In my review of Australian natural horn player Mark Papworth’s last recording for Move Records, New Wine in an Old Bottle, I likened him to a modernday Josef Leutgeb, young Mozart’s favourite hornist. Well, he’s done it again. Acknowledging the fact that, while much of Europe had adopted the valved horn, the natural horn was taught at the Paris Conservatoire right up until 1902. Papworth has recognised that French composers like Hector Berlioz realised that there were benefits to the valved instrument unobtainable by the old post horn, and rescored his Symphonie Fantastique to take advantage of the possibilities of the valved horn. Whereas, Adolphe Blanc was happy to stick with the old
Saxophonist Andrew Butt has released a treasure trove of fresh new material on his latest album Peregian. Butt is a master of his instrument, both on soprano and tenor, and the music which happens within this ensemble of masterful musicians is truly outstanding. The Queensland Music Award-winning opener of the album Le Baiser Salé sets the tone of the album with four new Butt compositions, alongside a revamped revised rendition of his previously recorded, Here and Now, plus his interpretation of the hymn-like traditional, The Water Is Wide. Great melodies and superb improvisations abound, including those of guitarist Toby Wren and pianist Kellee Green who are the keynote
version of the instrument. Papworth has now transcribed Berlioz’s song cycle, Nuits d’été (Summer Nights), for valved horn in a style that was common in the late 1800s. By contrast Papworth follows this with Adolphe Blanc’s Sonata for horn and piano written for the natural horn. It’s an interesting juxtaposition aided here by the excellent accompaniment from pianist Rosa Scaffidi. Blanc’s sonata was premiered in 1860 by its dedicatee, France’s premier horn player, Jean Mohr, to great acclaim. You might think that sitting through 25 minutes of a post horn sonata might be something of a stretch. Believe me when I say it isn’t!

players on this album, symbiotically in unison with Butt. Pulsating hearts of the drum and basses are provided by the masterful Aaron Janz and the ever-reliant Helen Russell and Nick Quigley who possess unsurpassed rhythmic instincts. When it came to a favourite track, there was no doubt that the award winner took the biscuit, but I also became enamoured of Jazz Socks and Peregian as close runners-up in the race. The recording is a superb addition to the artist’s discography. Its harmonious collaborations make for relaxing listening with a sophisticated edge to the mellow sounds.

Michel Bénébig, Lachlan Davidson and Le Grand B3 Big Band.
Independent
Renowned New Caledonian organist
Michel Bénébig has delivered this jewel of an album that is both outstanding and unique. Several things immediately impress one here. First, utilising his Hammond B3 organ as part of an effusive rhythm section and as a frontline instrument, Bénébig adds depth and texture to his music. Second, the composer employs his resources to give the aural impression of a much larger ensemble. Third, the outstanding virtuosic solos from the individual players on trumpet, trombone, guitar, and saxophones, allow this album to explode with musical joy. Lachlan Davidson’s alto playing is one of many of the album’s highlights, as are his arrangements. Such is the strength of the compositions that there is immense competition for a standout. The tracks Cool Changes with Anton Delecca’s tenor solo, the simple gentility of Sweet Little Girl with flutes, guitar and Hammond B3, and the

This homage to the music and arrangements of jazz giant Charles Mingus impressively captures the energy and melodic genius of the compositions of the bassist/ bandleader. Mingus’s work ranged from advanced bebop and avantgarde with small and midsize ensembles to pioneering post-bop style on seminal recordings like Pithecanthropus Erectus, heard here as the opener. His compositions and chosen band personnel were thoroughly steeped in the swinging blues/jazz traditions yet fiercely modern for their time and comparable in scope and invention to those of Duke Ellington. Sydney baritone saxophonist Steve Fitzmaurice has brought the music to life again with resplendent arrangements of a definitive Mingus repertoire that perfectly captures the raucous, fiery energy that ‘the
blues-drenched Try to Explain featuring Bénébig’s musical skills alongside Shane Gillard’s trumpet playing, are all first-raters. With his compositional prowess, Bénébig acts as the nexus, as his musical partners bring powerful and passionate performances to a recording full of bluesy soul jazz fusion. Here is an album for music lovers who like their jazz steeped in the tradition of Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes, Brother Jack MacDuff, and the immortal Jimmy Smith, yet aren’t afraid to stretch out of it with a big band.

angry man of jazz’ was famous for. The quality of the playing and vocals on this double vinyl package featuring some of Australia’s finest is superb, adding depth and texture to the great man’s music. The album cooks hard from start to finish. The standout tracks are Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, with added lyrics written by Joni Mitchell and sung by Dan Barnett, So Long Eric, a homage to Eric Dolphy’s departure to and ultimate death in Europe in 1964, and Shoes of the Fisherman with its ascending chromatic chord pattern, presented in multiple tempos. This makes for a great album and an exhilarating experience for those who like noisy taverns on Saturday night.

From stowing away on a boat to Sydney, to winning a scholarship from Down Beat magazine to attend Berklee College of Music and establishing himself in the American heartlands of jazz, Mike Nock’s story has always been one of fierce ambition, determination, and remarkable talent.
From Christchurch to Boston, from San Francisco to New York, Nock’s seven-decade career has seen him play with an enormous breadth of musical luminaries including Yusef Lateef, Art Blakey, Johnny O’Keefe, Dionne Warwick, Michael Brecker and Miles Davis, before returning to Sydney in the 1980s to teach at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Here he spent thirty years sharing his knowledge while balancing a prolific career of composing, recording, and touring. Nock has more than forty albums to his name and has featured as a player on over a hundred others.
Since he began taking piano lessons with his father at the age of eleven, Mike Nock’s affinity with the keyboard has been evident. Determined to continue his musical development after his father died suddenly, Nock continued his lessons with Ngāruawāhia pharmacist Bert McNamara.
In 1957, while living and playing in Auckland, Nock developed formative relationships working with the rock ‘n’ roll singer Johnny Devlin, drummer
Tony Hopkins and trumpeter Kim Paterson. Nock ultimately wanted to get to the USA and figured the best way might be via Sydney, leading to his stint as a stowaway.
At age eighteen and hungry for gigs, he quickly embedded himself in the local scene, forming the Three Out Trio with bassist Freddie Logan and drummer Chris Karan. They became a popular jazz group in late fifties Sydney, where they played relentlessly, and their 1960 EMI Columbia release Move sold like hotcakes.
When Nock learned he had successfully gained a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in the USA, the Three Out Trio planned a tour to England, playing for their passage, and spending a few months performing in Europe before Nock moved to Boston to study.
With little money or support, Nock was forced to hustle for gigs while studying, and quickly established himself in the local jazz scene. His undeniable talent soon found him picking up gigs with local luminaries, becoming an integral member of Yusef Lateef’s band in the early sixties. Lateef’s band leadership and the band’s timeless post-bop improvisational jazz had a profound influence on Nock. Their style afforded them a high profile in the US scene. Nock relocated to the West Coast in 1967 and formed The Fourth Way, an American jazz quartet. They played primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area through the early seventies, releasing three albums to critical acclaim, with music composed by Nock for the rock division of Capitol Records. Their first LP (1969) became a sampler’s secret
paradise with pilfered breakbeats and flourishes from the release later appearing in the ‘90s and ‘00s work of many era-defining DJs, such as Diplo.
The Fourth Way was celebrated as a pioneer of fusion jazz groups, mixing jazz with rock music while playing amplified instruments, performing at the prestigious 1970 Montreux Jazz Festival as the opening act for The Miles Davis group. The Fourth Way was on fire that night and Davis was upstaged by the young San Francisco musicians. Legend has it that Davis reportedly lamented, “Man, I’m never going on second again.”
Nock moved to New York in the mid-seventies where he stayed for the next ten years, releasing Magic Mansions (with Charlie Mariano), In, Out and Around with Michael Brecker, Climbing with John Abercrombie and Tom Harrell, Succubus with Alex Foster, as well as two solo albums, Piano
Solos and Mike Nock Solo (recorded in Australia). A standout release from this period is his trio record, Ondas, released on the prestigious jazz label ECM.
His return to the Antipodes in the mid-eighties did nothing to slow down his creative output, with a successful Sydney teaching career at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music (now the Sydney Conservatorium of Music) accompanying multiple releases with The New York Jazz Collective and albums with young Australian musicians.
Nock has already received a variety of accolades. He was inducted into the Australian Jazz Hall of Fame in 2009 and presented with the Don Banks Music Award in 2014. He will be inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame at the 2024 APRA Silver Scroll Awards on Tuesday 8 October at St James Theatre, Wellington.
At eighty-four, Mike Nock is still very active. His most recent solo piano album, Hearing, was released in 2023 on ABC Jazz and is a testament to his continued contemporary jazz prowess. He is also finding time to contribute to a planned documentary and, as ever, is
looking forward to a slew of upcoming live performances on his calendar.
Mike Nock was Barry’s special studio guest on A Jazz Hour on 2MBS Fine Music Sydney on Friday, August 30th, at midday. You can hear the interview on demand from our website or on the 2MBS App.
Laurie Smith talks to the veteran 2MBS blues, roots and country presenter
LS: Describe your programs on 2MBS for those who haven’t yet discovered them
On Stormy Monday, which I copresent with Garth Sundberg, we play the best of blues and roots music. On The Lost Highway, which I started presenting in 2018, I look at country music from ‘the road less travelled’.
LS: When did you first get involved with radio?
My interest in radio goes back to when I was 15. Commercial radio did not excite me and nor did I think the ABC was my style … until 2JJ came along in 1975. Its announcers with ordinary voices playing music I liked inspired me to think about a career in radio. Community radio was in its infancy and the government was offering to license nine low-powered community stations. I quickly became involved in several groups seeking licenses and even managed to present programs on a couple of test broadcasts.
LS: And 2MBS?
At this same time (in the late 70s), my interest in blues music was growing and I listened to a 2MBS program called Blues After Hours. One week, the presenters, Chris Rhule and Tim Gunn, announced that a listener had offered them free travel to the USA for a blues ‘study tour’ and they were looking for someone to cover for them while they were away. Incredibly, I got that six-week gig and Chris and Tim must have liked what I had done, as they invited me to stay on!
In the late ‘80s there was a major shake-up of programming, and we were invited to submit ideas for a new two-hour blues program. I was approached over this move, the details of which were revealed in a highly secret off-station meeting and Stormy Monday was born.
LS: But you didn’t stop at that?
I had also found that I had a talent for sound recording and I soon became one of the go-to people for all non-classical recordings made by the station. These were mainly jazz, but I also did many ‘live to air’ chamber music concerts as well. In 1986 I became a station employee, a position that lasted till 1990.
LS: Did you learn an instrument as a child?
I am neither a musician nor do I have a musical bone in my body. I can’t sing or play a musical instrument.
LS: But you love music!
Yes, and live music especially. I’ve been watching live bands since my late teens. On average I see at least one or two bands a week. I guess it is a sort of hobby. This is how I’ve met most of the people I know and most of them reckon I can’t go anywhere without knowing someone.
I may not be a musician, but I know when a band works and when one doesn’t. I’ve been fortunate to witness the rise of several bands from beginnings to stardom, known around the country: The Backsliders, Dynamic Hepnotics, and The Mighty Reapers.
If I find new bands that I like then I try to see them as much as possible, champion them to friends, and promote them on my program.
Stormy Monday, Mondays 8-10pm; The Lost Highway, 122am and 2-3am on alternate Thursdays. Also, on-demand on the 2MBS website or app.

Rusalka, to the distress of her water sprite father, wishes to become a mortal for love of a prince. She agrees to the conditions imposed by the witch Jezibaba: loss of the power of speech. Also, if the prince is faithless, they will both be damned. The prince takes Rusalka to his castle. His servants fear that he is under a spell and he finds the silent Rusalka unresponsive to his passion. He turns to a foreign princess, although he fears Rusalka’s magic, but the princess leaves him to his fate. Jezibaba gives the abandoned Rusalka a knife: she will be saved if she kills the prince. She is unable to do this and leaves. The prince comes in search of her. Now changed into a will-o’-the wisp, Rusalka kisses him as he dies and begs for divine mercy for him.

ALCINA: Elena Biscuola, mezz
RUGGIERO: Mauro Borgioni, bar MELISSA: Gabriella Martellacci, cont Allabastrina; La Pifarescha/Elena Sartori. Glossa GCD 923902 1:19
The evil sorceress, Alcina, has enslaved Ruggiero, a heroic Christian warrior, on her enchanted island. Disguised as his old tutor Atlas, a good sorceress, Melissa, comes to
rescue him. Her persuasive words convince Ruggerio to discard Alcina's gifts of love and to reject her. Furious, Alcina summons monsters of the deep to seek revenge on Ruggerio. Melissa's magic is more powerful than Alcina's and she banishes Alcina. Melissa frees enchanted damsels, whom Alcina had turned into flowers and plants, and frees enchanted knights who also were ensnared by Alcina. They all dance, with much rejoicing, that the wicked Alcina has been defeated.

ZYLIM: Arnaud Richard, bass
ZÉLINDOR: Mathias Vidam, ten ZYRPHÉE: Bénédicte Tauran, sop
Ausionia/Frédérick Haas, Mira Glodeanu. MBF 1108 51
The sylph, Zulim, chides Zélindor, king of the sylphes, for loving a mortal. Zélindor then confesses his fear that Zyrphée may not love him in return. Zulim tries to convince Zélindor of Zyrphée’s love. As Zyrphée enters, Zélindor makes himself and Zulim invisible. Zyrphée sings of her love for Zélindor then realises that he is present, but invisible. She appeals to Zélindor to reveal himself and he explains that once she sees him, she must marry him or reject him, and she will no longer be attractive to anyone else. Zyrphée remains eager to see Zélindor, and, convinced of her love, Zélindor appears before her. Zélindor calls on all the elements to celebrate his union with Zyrphée.

This is the Cinderella fairytale without the evil stepmother. Marie is a servant in the house of her father, Baron de Pictordu. The Prince is looking for a wife and, disguised as a beggar, he calls at the house asking for food and money. He falls in love with Marie as she offers him the few coins she has. When he returns later, disguised as his valet Barigoule, to deliver an invitation to a ball that evening, Marie falls in love with him. After the Baron and the sisters, Armelinde and Maguelonne, leave for the ball, Marie’s fairy godmother appears, turning a pumpkin into a carriage, mice into horses, lizards into footmen, and a rat into a coachman, and giving Marie a beautiful gown and slippers to wear. She reminds Marie to be back by midnight or the spell will break.
When Marie arrives at the ball, she and the Prince recognise each other as the one with whom they have fallen in love. Singing and dancing take place and, when the crowd leaves for the buffet, the Prince and Marie have a moment alone. They kiss but then Marie realises that midnight has come and leaves abruptly, losing a slipper as she rushes off.
The next morning, word comes that the Prince wishes to marry the lady whose slipper was left behind at the ball. The Prince arrives at the Pictordu house and directs Barigoule to try the slipper on each lady. As the slipper fits neither of the sisters, the Prince decides that the mysterious lady wasn't from this home and starts to leave but Barigoule remembers that there were three ladies. It is soon revealed that the third sister is in the kitchen. Marie is brought into the room and the slipper is a perfect fit. The Prince immediately asks Marie to marry him, and her family asks her to forgive them for their treatment of her. The Fairy Godmother returns to bid happiness to the young couple.

Victor Ronai celebrates receiving from Count von Mutzelberg an award of 50,000 marks for one of his paintings. After Victor rescues a beautiful woman from an attack, he discovers that her assailant is none other than his benefactor, the Count. The prize is withdrawn but Victor is more concerned about seeing this woman again. Unable to shake the memory of the woman from his mind, he paints her from memory as The Carnival Fairy. The prize money is unexpectedly restored to him but Victor thinks that perhaps, because he and the woman were attracted to each other, it has come from the woman, whom he now knows is Princess Alexandra. A series of misunderstandings follow until Victor and the Princess declare their love for each other.

During a storm in the Caucasian mountains, evil spirits call upon the Demon to destroy the beauty of creation. The Demon rejects an Angel's plea for him to reconcile with Heaven and proclaims his hatred of the universe. Tamara, who is about to wed Prince Sinodal, is seen by the Demon who falls in love with her. He promises her that, if she returns his love, the whole world will kneel before her. She is frightened, but fascinated.
Prince Sinodal's caravan, on the way to Prince Goudal’s court for his wedding, is delayed by a landslide. The Demon appears and vows that Prince Sinodal will never see Tamara again. During an attack by Tatars, Prince Sinodal is mortally wounded. Before he dies, he tells his servant to take his body to Tamara.
The festivities for the wedding have already begun when a messenger arrives announcing that Prince Sinodal's caravan has been delayed. Tamara senses the presence of the Demon and is fearful. When Prince Sinodal's body is brought into the castle, Tamara is overcome by grief but is horrified when she keeps hearing the Demon’s promises. She begs her father, Prince Goudal, to let her enter a convent.
In the convent, Tamara is constantly troubled by dreams of the Demon. An Angel tries in vain to stop the Demon from entering the convent. He again declares his love for Tamara who tries to resist her attraction to him, but fails. The Demon kisses her in triumph. The Angel appears and shows her the ghost of Prince Sinodal. Horrified, Tamara struggles out of the Demon's arms and falls dead. The Angel proclaims that Tamara has been redeemed by her suffering, while the Demon is damned to eternal solitude. The Demon curses his fate and Tamara's soul is carried to Heaven accompanied by angels. Max, a forester, loves Agathe, and to succeed her father, Kuno, as head forester, a test of marksmanship skill is required. Max loses in the target practice. Kaspar persuades Max to cast seven magic bullets which will kill anything the shooter wants. Kaspar, whose soul is to be forfeited to the devil on the following day, hopes to substitute Max in his place. Max, fearing he will lose Agathe if he loses the contest, goes with Kaspar at midnight to the terrible Wolf's Glen to cast the magic bullets. Kaspar calls upon Samiel,
the Black Huntsman, and when Max arrives, Samiel conjures up the shape of Agathe drowning herself, despairing at Max's lack of success, whereupon Max begins the casting of the bullets.
Agathe dreams of ill omens. The hermit tells Agathe that her bridal wreath will protect her from danger. The bridesmaids arrive with the bridal wreath but when the box is opened, it is a funeral wreath.
Max and Kaspar divide the bullets between them. Kaspar deliberately uses his last bullet leaving Max with the seventh which is controlled by the Evil One. As Max fires at a target, Samiel guides the bullet so that it is aimed at Agathe. Her bridal wreath deflects the bullet which strikes Kaspar. Samiel grasps him instead of Max, whereupon Kaspar expires with a curse upon his lips. Prince Ottokar, on learning about the magic bullets, pronounces the sentence of banishment on Max. The hermit pleads for Max saying that if he lives a faultless life, he should gain forgiveness and be permitted to marry Agathe after one year. The Prince agrees.

Electra and her exiled brother, Orestes, separately mourn their father, King Agamemnon of Mycenae, recently killed by his wife, Clytemnestra, and her lover, Aegistus, who is now king. Orestes swears vengeance. Electra implores the gods to reunite her with Orestes and summons the Furies to assist her revenge. Electra’s confidante, Ismene, tells her that Clytemnestra is going to the temple, which is also Agamemnon’s burial place. Electra confronts her mother at the entrance, rejecting her offer to be reconciled. Clytemnestra urges that Electra not anger Aegistus. Enraged, Electra declares her wish to kill him, whereupon Clytemnestra disowns her. Clytemnestra fears that Orestes is planning to return and reclaim the throne, but Arcas, Orestes’ friend, arrives with the (false) message that Orestes is dead. Clytemnestra is distraught. Aegistus agrees to honour the ashes and place them in Agamemnon’s tomb. Electra initially refuses to believe that Orestes is dead but, when the people proclaim it also, she collapses and then runs away in total despair.
Orestes and his friend, Pylades, disguised as slaves, enter carrying an urn. When Electra mentions her late father, Orestes realises who she is but does not reveal himself, saying merely that he knew Orestes in exile. Electra says that, as a friend of Orestes, he should join her in her quest for vengeance. Orestes then reveals himself, to their mutual joy. The urn is conveyed to the temple, where Aegistus prepares to lower it into the tomb. Orestes appears, reveals his identity to all, and kills his mother and stepfather before the Furies return to carry him off.

Schulz, J. Peter’s wedding. Opera in one act. Libretto by Thomas Thaarup. First performed Copenhagen, 1793.
GRETHE: Hannah Husáhr, sop
PETER: Tobias Westman, ten L’arte del mondo/Werner Ehrhardt. Harmonia Mundi 88843 01760 2 1:10
In a Danish village, Grethe is awaiting the return of her betrothed, Peter, a sea captain. Her friends care for her until he arrives, when he is greeted by singing and dancing. Another
villager, Cecilie, wants to marry the village teacher, Frederik. Her friends help overcome misgivings that she is too young. The two weddings are celebrated jointly, interrupted only by Martin, a freed slave, who sings of his displacement from his country. This contrasts with the chorus in praise of Denmark and Norway (which it then ruled) that ends the festivities.
