FEBRUARY 5-9, 2025

From the Editor

We had good intentions of not having to work over Christmas to provide a discreet Fine Music Magazine for January. Somewhere the wheels fell off and we were faced with a few problems when the combined December/January edition went to print. To correct that anomaly, this special January-only booklet has been produced. Our next regular Magazine will be February 2025 where we’ll embark on our fiftieth year of broadcasting. I wish you well for the festive season.

Our cover

The cover image for this edition is a colourised version of a portrait of Russian composer Reinhold Glière whose works appear in Saturday Matinee and Sunday Special during January.

Trying to find out if her husband, Florestan, is

being held prisoner, Leonore disguises herself as a young man, Fidelio, and gets work as assistant to the chief jailor, Rocco. Marzelline, Rocco’s daughter, falls in love with ‘Fidelio’. Her father is delighted and promises her to ‘Fidelio’ as his bride. The prison governor, Don Pizarro, who has secretly been holding Florestan prisoner, is warned that the Minister of Justice is on his way to inspect the jail. Heavily chained and delirious from starvation, Florestan dreams of Leonore as an angel watching over him. In the darkness she recognises his voice and prevents Pizarro from killing him. The Minister, Don Fernando, arrives and promises to free all those unjustly imprisoned by Pizarro. He is horrified to see Florestan, his old friend whom he believed dead, among the prisoners. He immediately has Pizarro arrested.

Janácek, L. Jenufa. Opera in three acts. Libretto by the composer after the play by Gabriela Preissova. First performed Brno, 1904. (Act III orchestrated by Karel Kovarovic.)

JENUFA: Elizabeth Söderström, sop THE KOSTELNICKA : Eva Randova, sop

STEVA: Peter Dvorský, ten LACA : Wieslav Ochman, ten

Vienna State Opera Ch; Vienna PO/Charles Mackerras. Decca 414 482-2 2:05

Jenufa is pregnant, but her foster mother, the Kostelnicka (leader of the village), forbids her to marry her son, Steva, Jenufa’s feckless sweetheart, until he stays sober for a year. Laca, Steva’s half brother, is hopelessly in love with Jenufa. The Kostelnicka pretends that Jenufa has gone to Vienna but, in fact, she has her baby in secret. Steva refuses to acknowledge the child and the Kostelnicka, fearing its existence will prevent Jenufa from marrying Laca, drowns the baby in the icy river while Jenufa is asleep. She tells Jenufa that she has been in a fever and the baby has died. The body is found as Jenufa and Laca are about to be married. The villagers turn on Jenufa but the Kostelnicka confesses to the crime. Jenufa forgives her foster mother and offers Laca his freedom, but he stays with her and they prepare to face the future together.

Andante II, from The cunning little vixen orchestral suite (1922-23; arr. Talich 1937; rev. Smetácek 1965).

D’Oyly Carte Opera; Royal PO/Royston Nash. Decca 436 813-2 1:39

In the tiny Middle European country of Pfennig-Halbpfennig a troupe of actors, led by Ernest Dumkopff, is involved in a plot to assassinate the depressed and parsimonious Grand Duke Rudolf, who is preparing for his wedding to Caroline, Baroness von Krakenfeldt. She is rich but keen on strict economy. The Baroness discovers that Rudolph was betrothed in infancy to the Princess of Monte Carlo, which could present

a problem, but the engagement only holds until the Princess is 21, which is tomorrow, and there is next to no chance of her turning up now.

The theatre troupe is rehearsing for a performance of Troilus and Cressida with English actress, Julia, in the lead. The soubrette, Lisa, and the comedian, Ludwig, are dressed up and ready to marry, but all the parsons are off at the ducal palace. Ernest is confident that he will win the election which will follow the coup and become Grand Duke, and Julia assumes that, as leading lady, she will be the Grand Duchess. However, Ludwig, by mistake, has given away the details of the conspiracy to the Grand Duke’s private detective. At the suggestion of a local Notary, Ernest and Ludwig fight a ‘Statutory Duel’, drawing cards to decide the winner. Ludwig wins. Rudolf learns of the plot, which he finds very depressing. Ludwig suggests that he and Rudolf fight a rigged Statutory Duel making sure Ludwig wins so that he will be the Grand Duke who gets deposed the following day. Julia insists that then she must marry Ludwig in place of Lisa.

Next day Julia and Ludwig arrive at the palace with their wedding party. The Baroness tries to claim Ludwig for herself, and, of course, the Prince of Monte Carlo and his daughter turn up at just this moment. The Notary turns out to have made a mistake in the rules of the duel. Ludwig didn’t win after all, Rudolf is still the Grand Duke, and everyone ends up with the right partner after all.

The mayor, Don Anchise, is wooing his new gardener, ‘Sandrina’, who is in fact the Marchioness Violante Onesti in disguise. She is determined to find her ex-lover, the Count Belfiore, who, in a fit of jealousy, stabbed her and left her for dead. Roberto, Violante’s servant, also disguised as a gardener named ‘Nardo’, is in love with Serpetta, Don Anchise’s servant, but she is hoping to marry her master. Belfiore is about to wed the mayor’s niece, Arminda. When ‘Sandrina’ faints on hearing the news of his intended marriage, Belfiore comes to her aid and immediately recognises her as his lost Violante but she refuses his advances. Utter confusion and jealousies reign.

Arminda has ‘Sandrina’ abandoned in the nearby forest. Terrified, she takes shelter in a cave, while Don Anchise, Belfiore, Serpetta and ‘Nardo’ search for her in the darkness. Don Anchise is still resolved to marry her. When Belfiore finds ‘Sandrina’, she and Belfiore become deluded and imagine themselves as Greek gods but, eventually come to their senses and recognise one another. Belfiore’s pleading finally overcomes her resistance and they fall into one another’s arms. ‘Nardo’ (Roberto) reveals to everyone that ‘Sandrina’ is none other than Violante, and that she is going to marry Belfiore. Arminda then resigns herself to marrying her uncle’s friend, Ramiro, and Serpetta is betrothed to Roberto. Don Anchise brings the three couples together and decides he had better start looking for a new gardener.

Both Aïda and Amneris, the Pharaoh’s daughter, are in love with Radamès, who is leading the Egyptian army against Ethiopia. He returns triumphant from the war with Amonasro his prisoner and is given Amneris as his bride. Radamès is in love with Aïda, and asks for the life of his prisoners. That night, Radamès farewells Aïda but Amonasro has persuaded her to ask Radamès

Having completed his Twelve Labours, Hercules is received into Olympus. His father, Jupiter, has arranged for him to marry Hebe, cupbearer of the gods and herself the goddess of eternal youth and grace. Hebe is also Jupiter’s daughter, although he is no longer married to her mother, Juno.

Juno warns of the prevalence of foolishness in the world. Hebe asks Hercules whether he would be willing to travel the seas for her. They then ask to be left in peace. Hebe sings of the pleasure of sweet desire, and Hercules of the great delight that she brings him. Jupiter asserts his power and strength, and Juno declares that what they set out to do in arranging the marriage has been achieved. At the end all celebrate the prospect that it will banish discord and difficulty from the earth. Sammartini, G. Symphony in C (c1750). Aradia Baroque Ensemble/Kevin Mallon. Naxos 8.557298 12

is in Sivene. Lisinga suggests that they each choose a scene from a different genre of drama, and act it. She herself chooses tragedy, Sivene the pastoral, and Tangia the comic. Lisinga goes first, singing the part of a tragic heroine from the Greek myths. Sivene follows as a nymph who laughs at a shepherd’s tears. Silango offers to play the shepherd, in order to ingratiate himself in Sivene’s feelings. Tangia hasn’t picked her comic subject, so someone suggests the part of a fashion-conscious traveller newly arrived home from afar, a thinly veiled parody of Silango for not returning her sentiments. They can’t agree as to whose performance was best, so decide to all dance together instead. Quando sara quel di?, from La clemenza di Tito (1752).
