Taster Days Did you know, you can try being a Yeovil College student for a day to see if you like it? Hundreds of people apply to take part in our Year 10 Taster days every year. These are fun days where you can find out more about the College, try out some of our facilities, meet the staff and experience a taste of our courses to see if you like them.

As well as thinking about what qualifications you already have, you also need to think about what you would like to do in the future. A very high proportion of Yeovil College students go on to either University or successful employment after gaining their qualifications. In 2015, 259 students applied to study at Universities such as the Russel group, Kings College London, Imperial college, University of Warwick, Cardiff University and University of West of England as well as excellent options closer to home, such as our very own Yeovil College University Centre.

Each qualification has a level, usually Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3. Intermediate Apprenticeships are Level 2 and Advanced Apprenticeships are Level 3. Which level course you can take depends upon what qualifications you already have, or what grades you are likely to get for your GCSEs. **If you didn’t achieve a grade C in GCSE English or Maths, it is now a Government requirement that you study either Functional skills in Literacy and Numeracy, or GCSE Maths and English alongside your main programme of study, this will be discussed at your interview, or enrolment appointment after you recieve your exam results.

Bethany Hubbard (18) formerly from Stanchester School achieved A A A B grades and is going to study Adult Nursing at Bournemouth University. Many courses give you the chance to work on real-life projects for employers, meet guest speakers from course relevant industry and take part in trips to explore relevant businesses.

NEW for 2015 examples include: Health, Care and Early Years Careers College

In September 2015, we launched a fantastic new Careers College in partnership with Yeovil District Hospital. The first one of its kind to be launched in the country; this unique partnership will enable our students to access the perfect learning and training environment. Students from across a range of courses including Health Care, Early years and Access for Adults courses will learn the practical hands on skills required within a Hospital environment and the technical, theoretical training and background knowledge on the main college campus. Alongside degree students and practioners upskilling with the hospital.

The Careers College was launched in September 2015, with the first phase delivering teaching on the college campus and in depth work experience opportunities within the Hospital as an integral part of all Health Care courses. The second phase will include fundraising to raise enough to build a state of the art Careers College building attached to Yeovil District Hospital. During the fundraising phase 2 stage, all students who apply for any course within the HealthCare and Early years setting will immediately benefit from this unique employer partnership with Yeovil District Hospital.

About A Levels About A Levels

Why study A Levels? A Levels are considered the gold standard of academic qualifications and valued by both employers and universities. They give breadth to your education by allowing you to study up to four subjects and develop of a wide range of skills alongside specialist subject knowledge. Achieving good grades at A level demonstrates high level subject knowledge, the ability to study independently and a wide range of analytical and evaluative skills which will stand you in good stead at university or in employment. It’s no wonder that taking A Levels (or their equivalent qualifications) increases your average earnings by 15% and many students progress to study for degrees which increase average earnings by 85%

Changes for 2016/17 **A new 2 year style study programme is beginning to be phased in by Exam Boards through the introduction of linear A levels, this means that you will be encouraged to study 3-4 A level programmes over a 2 year period, rather than studying AS levels to start and then progressing on to A levels in year 2. For more details, check with the Student and Customer Services team when you apply, or talk to one of our A level Lecturers at one of our Open Events. Study with the Specialists At Yeovil College, you will be taught by a team of dedicated lecturers whose focus is on delivering A levels, in some cases alongside undergraduate degrees at the University Centre Yeovil. This means they have an excellent understanding of the challenges of modern Higher Education study and know how best to prepare you for the rigours of university. All of our team are subject specialists, many are qualified to higher degree level and several are also A Level examiners with a special insight into the assessment process. This experience means that you will benefit from expert subject knowledge and a real understanding of how to ensure that you can achieve your full potential at A Level.

Learning Environment Our Advanced Level Academy students benefit from the use of the Academy learning environment which combines quiet study areas, open access IT. Group work spaces and teaching rooms with stateof-the-art interactive whiteboards. Yeovil College aims to help you make use of the latest technologies and students are encouraged to use their own laptops and tablets as well as Yeovil College equipment to enhance their learning experience. A level students are also able to use a silent study area as part of our University Centre on our main campus. Getting You Ready for University or Work Studying A Levels at Yeovil College is a very different experience to being in a school. Many students say it acts as a perfect step towards university or employment because it allows them to grow in confidence, gain research and other skills and learn to work under their own initiative.

College students have individualised timetables, enabling academic study periods alongside formal teaching lessons, they enjoy a more adult relationship with staff and other students and are supported so that they can develop into independent academic thinkers, leading to lessons full of discussion and evaluation of information rather than just facts, facts, facts. Above all, Yeovil College ensures that students are supported throughout their time with us, so that the transition is smooth and all students have the opportunity to prepare for university. The Journey Starts Here Studying an A Level programme at Yeovil College is not just about obtaining qualifications. We want to ensure that you also have opportunities to research and develop your plans for the future and begin taking steps towards your goals, whether it is a place at a university or a top job.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) The EPQ is offered as a stand-alone qualification to those on the second year of an A Level programme. It is your opportunity to demonstrate to universities and employers the ability to carry out a piece of academic research into a subject that you have chosen. This extra qualification accrues up to 70 UCAS points.

Every student has a personal tutor, who provides support with the transition to College, academic mentoring and career guidance. Many current and former students tell us that the support they have received from their tutor and the specialist Student Support team has been key to their success at college and later in life.

• Select an area of special interest

Once students have decided on their next steps there is a wide range of support in place to ensure that you make your next steps successfully. If you want to go to university, you can take advantage of trips to UCAS conventions, a range of guest speakers and specialist application and finance information, advice and guidance available at Yeovil College. You will be encouraged to apply for taster days, summer schools and subject-specific courses, such as MedLink for future medical students. You will be offered practice interviews if you choose to apply to Oxford, Cambridge or other competitive universities. If your chosen course has an aptitude test, such as the LNAT for Law, you will be given lots of guidance and practice opportunities. Yeovil College will also help you develop a better understanding of the job market and essential skills such as interview technique and how to apply for employment. Our subject specialists have strong connections with local employers and a good track record of supporting students to gain training positions in a range of fields, including accountancy and criminal justice. Various events are also scheduled during the year that will give you experience in mock interviews and CV building and support.

NEW for 2015 Academic & Sports Scholarships In September 2015, Yeovil College launched a new exciting scholarship programme, supported by the Yeovil College Bursary Foundation (YCBF) There are up to 8 scholarships available to gifted academic students of up to £500. Students need to achieve at least 5 A* or A grades in their GCSE results to apply. Applications will be chosen by an independent panel who represent the YCBF. Students can apply for a scholarship either during the application process, or once enrolled as a new student up to the 30th September 2016. See page 92 to find out about the new sports Scholarship.

A Levels A Levels

A Level Art & Design This A Level covers areas of Fine Art such as drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media and sculpture whilst exploring the work of various artists, art movements and themes. Coursework encourages you to develop skills and understanding of visual language and associated practical skills, whilst placing the work in context through practicals and researching the work of others. The course is made up of two units, one of which is a Controlled Assignment and encourages you to take increasing ownership of your own growth and development as an artist.

A Level Biology

A Level Accounting

Entry Requirements:

You need five GCSEs at grade A* to C, including English and Maths.

This course aims to develop your understanding of Accounting for Business organisations. You will learn about the need for accounts and the rules upon which they are based. You will learn how to produce a range of accounting records, such as income statements, balance sheets, ledger accounts and reconciliations. You will learn how to interpret accounting information and how to produce information for management.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

You can progress to higher Accountancy courses such as AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians), other professional qualifications or related subjects at Higher Education level. Alternatively, you can seek employment. Accounting skills are highly sought after in a range of industries.

Topics covered during this course include Cell Structure, Important Biological Chemicals, DNA & its Significance, Nutrition, Reproduction, Microbiology, Respiration, the Nervous Systems and Evolution. Career Opportunities/Progression:

After this course, you can apply for Higher Education or employment. Many university courses require A Level Biology, including Biology, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Environmental Science and more. Graduates pursue careers in the Science and Health sectors, such as Biomedicine, Genetics, Horticulture and Food and Drink. For example, you could work as a researcher or technician in industry, Health, Care or Education. You could also consider Scientific Support Services, such as Forensic Scientist or Ecology Consultant. A Level Chemistry

This course offers an excellent insight into Business and allows you to develop a range of transferable analytical and evaluative skills. In the first year, you will look at what makes an entrepreneur and the actions they take to develop profitable enterprises. Business functions covered include Finance, Marketing, Operations and Recruitment. In the second year, you will look at decision making at boardroom level and the effect of external factors on Business.

Chemistry underpins many other sciences, so is valued by many universities because it provides a firm foundation on which they can build. This course encompasses Atoms, Bonds & Groups, Chains, Energy & Resources, Rings, Polymers & Analysis, Equilibrium, Energetics & Elements and Practical Skills.

Trips & Residentials:

There are regular visits to significant local employers and international companies and an optional residential to an international business conference at Disneyland, Paris. Other destinations have included New York, Barcelona and Berlin.

Entry Requirements:

You need five GCSEs at A* to C grade, including A* to B in GCSE Maths. You also need either GCSE Additional Science or GCSE Chemistry or a Distinction in BTEC First Extended Certificate (Level 2) Applied Science. The course is challenging and you must be inquisitive about Chemistry’s molecular world and its effect on our lives.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

A Level Chemistry is required to study Chemistry at university as well as other subjects such as Biological Sciences, Medicine and Veterinary Science.

You need five GCSEs at grade A* to C, including both Maths and English.

The course encompasses key IT skills and will teach you both hardware and software aspects of Computing. You will gain an appreciation of the underlying principles of modern computer systems and software development using a range of programming language and software packages.

Economics is an interesting and challenging subject that looks at how society sets about meeting people’s demands for things they need and want. The course looks at the world from the view of Microeconomics, the economics of the individual, and Macroeconomics, the national and international level.

A Level Communication & Culture This is an exciting A Level which features an excellent 50/50 blend of coursework and exams. It covers an interesting range of perspectives on both Communication and Culture. You will explore a number of key Communication aspects, including verbal, non-verbal and group communication, as well as the role of self and personal identity, particularly in relation to youth and sub-cultures. You will also learn about the roles of popular and ‘high’ culture, looking at art, music and other cultural forms. You will examine a range of interesting media texts, from adverts to propaganda.

This qualification is particularly relevant to Communication and Media degrees, but will give you access to a wide range of Higher Education courses. Past students have progressed to employment in areas including law, the Armed Forces, broadcast media, marketing, office and retail management.

A Level English Language During this course you will become a language detective, searching for linguistic clues in speech and writing, gathering evidence and presenting your case with conviction and flair. You will learn to look at language with new eyes and hear it with new ears - as well as growing as a writer with opportunities to write in a variety of styles. You will be encouraged to produce real material, test it on your target audience and then redraft it until it reaches a professional standard. Physics is at the very heart of science and technology and opens the door to a wide range of careers. This course looks in details at the fundamental workings of our universe, from the very smallest scales in particle and nuclear physics to the very largest in astrophysics and cosmology. You will use your practical skills to carry out investigations, including the use of sensors and probes for data collections and software for analysis.

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and experience, exploring what people do and how they think and feel. During this course you will learn about theories and research relating to various aspects of behaviour including Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Individual Differences, Social Psychology and Abnormal Behaviour.

Apprenticeships Explained

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes which allow you to complete on-the-job training and gain relevant, nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are designed by the Sector Skills Councils and course content is influenced by relevant business representatives. In this way, Apprenticeships are created by people who genuinely understand business, ensuring that you learn the skills that employers need. What makes an Apprenticeship different from other training? While students completing other courses will do most of their learning in the classroom, Apprenticeships are work-based. As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Performing Manufacturing Operations This Apprenticeship is suitable for students pursuing a career in one of a wide range of manufacturing occupations. During this course, you will study health and safety within your organisation and the control of manufacturing operations, as well as quality control, improving effectiveness, communication, working relationships and environmental awareness.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

If you successfully complete this Level 2 Apprenticeship, you can progress to a Level 3 course in a related area of study. Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Accountancy

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Customer Service

This Apprenticeship is for ambitious people who are new to finance or who want to expand and develop their foundation knowledge and skills ready for a successful career in the sector. Through this course, you can achieve a formal Accountancy qualification while gaining hands on Accountancy experience in the workplace. Areas covered include Book-keeping, Costing, Working Effectively and Professional Ethics.

The Apprenticeship will help to develop the knowledge and skills required to work effectively in a Customer Service role. During the course, you will gain knowledge and skills in relation to Customer Service delivery, communication and organisation structure, as well as being able to choose optional units that relate specifically to your employer and role. The main qualification components are delivered in the workplace by one of our trained assessor-deliverers.

Entry Requirements:

There are no specific requirements for this course, but good GCSEs in Mathematics and English are desirable. You will also need a suitable work placement.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

Having successfully completed the Level 2 qualification, the natural progression is to the Level 3 diploma in Accounting. This Apprenticeship is suitable for people in Junior Accounts positions. It is an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to pursue a career in accountancy and with additional training and experience can lead to an Account role.

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Accounting This Apprenticeship is for ambitious people who want to expand and develop their foundation knowledge and skills for a successful career in the sector. By taking the Apprenticeship, you can achieve a formal Accountancy qualification while gaining hands on Accountancy skills and experience in the workplace. You will learn a range of core Accountancy practices and techniques, from costing and double entry book-keeping to computerised accounting.

When you successfully complete this Intermediate (Level 2) Apprenticeship and gain a good workplace reference, you may like to progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Customer Service or the Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Team Leading, depending on your job role and career ambitions. Alternatively, you can apply for employment as a Customer Service Advisor in a variety of workplaces, such as retail stores or contact centres.

You need a Level 2 AAT qualification, to be over 18 and have an A Level in Accounting or to be experienced in double entry book-keeping. You will also need a suitable work placement.

Upon successful completion of the Level 3 Apprenticeship, the natural progression is to the part-time Level 4 AAT Diploma in Accounting or a related Higher Apprenticeship. Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Customer Service

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Management

This Advanced Apprenticeship will help you develop your higher level Customer Service skills so that you are better placed to support managers with organisational objectives, such as planning and project management, in your Customer Service role. During the course, you will gain knowledge and skills in relation to Customer Service improvement, communication and delivery as well as being able to choose optional units that relate specifically to your employer and role. The main qualification components are delivered in the workplace by one of our trained assessor-deliverers.

Ideal qualification for entry in to management as a career. The course will take 18 months to complete the NVQ, with knowledge based units that includes Manage Team Performance, Principles of People Management, Principles of Business, Principles of Leadership and Management and Managing Personal and Professional Development.

Entry Requirements:

You need at least two GCSEs at grade C, including English Language. If you do not have GCSE Maths and English at grade C, you will complete Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications as part of your Apprenticeship. You must be working in a relevant workplace and role and have the support of your line manager/employer.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

When you successfully complete this Advanced Apprenticeship and gain a good workplace reference, you may like to progress to a Level 3 Management qualification, such as the Advanced Apprenticeship available through Yeovil College. Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Marketing This apprentice will allow you to gain fantastic experience and knowledge of the marketing world. You will learn key aspects such as relationship marketing, social marketing, technology, policy and legislation. During your apprenticeship will be with an employer that will help shape your career and attend master classes at college that build your skills. Entry Requirements: You must have GCSE’s at C Grades in Maths and English but will also require ICT Level 2 Team-Leading Level 2, or prior experience in a managerial role is desirable but not essential.

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Team Leading This qualification is designed to attract new talent into management, and will up-skill the workforce. Ideally potential candidates should be working as team leaders, floor managers, helpdesk managers and trainee supervisors. Entry Requirements: You must have GCSE’s at D grades in Maths and English, or be able to work towards C grades or Level 2 Functional Skills. ICT level 1 or above desirable but not essential as full training will be provided.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

With additional training, apprentices may be able to progress in their careers to roles including first line managers, section managers, assistant managers, trainee managers.

Care & Early Years Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Children & Young People’s Workforce The Intermediate Apprenticeship (level 2) Children & Young People’s Workforce gives you the underpinning knowledge and practical experience of working with children aged 0-19 years in a variety of work settings, including nurseries, pre-schools and schools. The course covers key areas including Child & Young Person Development, Safeguarding, Paediatric Illness & Injury and Communication. You will develop your practical skills at your work placement for four days a week and attend College for one day per week. There are weekly workshops for two terms, which then become monthly.

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Health & Social Care This Apprenticeship is designed for people working in Assistant roles in Health and Social Care environments including care homes, working with people with learning difficulties/disabilities, day centres or nursing homes. The course covers key topics including safeguarding, person-centred approaches, health and safety, communication, personal development and equality and inclusion. The main Health & Social Care component of your qualification is delivered in the workplace by one of our qualified assessor-deliverers. Entry Requirements:

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Early Years Educator This Apprenticeship aims to give you the underpinning knowledge and practical experience you need to work with children under 8 years old in variety of settings, including nurseries, pre-schools and schools. Areas covered include safeguarding, observation, assessment, partnership working and planning and implementing activities, opportunities and educational programmes. As an apprentice, you will work at your placement for four days a week and spend one day a week at College. For the main component of your qualification, you will attend workshops once a week for the first term and monthly thereafter. Entry Requirements:

You must have GCSEs in English and Maths at grade A to C and a relevant Level 2 qualification or previous experience of working in a Childcare setting. You need to be working in a relevant workplace for the duration of the course and have DBS (Police) clearance. This is normally processed by your employer.

Gaining this Advanced Apprenticeship and further work experience means you can apply for Higher Education courses, such as the Foundation degree in Early Years Care & Education available at the University Centre Yeovil. Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Specialist Support for Teaching & Learning in Schools Designed for Teaching Assistants, this Apprenticeship will give you the underpinning knowledge and practical experience of working in a school. You will learn key theory in areas such as communication, professional relationships, learning activities, behaviour, assessment and more. There are weekly, subject-specific workshops at College in term one, which then become monthly. If you have not got GCSE Maths or ICT at grade C or above, you will also attend weekly workshops to gain Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications. You will spend the rest of your time developing your skills in the workplace. Entry Requirements:

You must have GCSE English language at C grade or above and a relevant Level 2 qualification or previous experience of working in a school as class teacher or Teaching Assistant. Construction Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Bricklaying This course is the perfect choice if you want to develop an advanced skillset that will help you not only succeed, but excel in the construction trade. Learning in our exceptional workshop facilities, you will become adept in building complex masonry structures, including axed arches, decorative panels, chimneys and fireplaces. You will also learn about the wider construction industry, and how brickwork interacts with other trades and professions. This will provide you with essential knowledge for future employment in the sector, which you will be well prepared for upon the completion of your studies. The course provides an introduction to health and safety in construction as well as an introduction the construction industry in general. Students will learn about the different types of construction, sustainability, energy saving materials used in construction and the job opportunities that are available. Practical skills are developed through a series of bricklaying projects where the student must read drawings and produce a finished piece of works. Entry Requirements:

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Providing Electrical Security & Emergency Systems

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Plumbing & Heating

This Apprenticeship aims to help you gain the workplace skills and experience you need for a successful career in Carpentry. It covers the installation of first and second fix components such as windows and doors, the erection of structural carcassing, maintenance of tools and equipment and health and safety in the work environment. You will also gain site management skills and develop your knowledge of bespoke work.

This course will help you to further develop the skills and experience to become a recognised an Advanced Security Installer, specialising in one of the following fields; Security Systems, Access Control, Closed Circuit Television, Fire and Emergency Lighting.

This Apprenticeship will give you the skills and experience within the workplace to start a career as a qualified Plumber. The programme will cover areas such as the installation of hot and cold water systems, how to maintain them and how to decommission systems in a safe and secure manner.

Entry Requirements:

You should have at least English, Maths and Science GCSE grade C (or Functional skills equivalent) and a work placement. You should have successfully completed a Level 1 Performing Engineering Operations qualification to a high standard and been approved by your tutor to progress to this course. Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Composite Engineering This Apprenticeship is designed for people pursuing a career in the Composites Industry. The Apprenticeship consists of a Level 3 NVQ, Technical Certificate and, if required, Functional Skills. Career Opportunities/Progression:

You need NVQ Diploma (Level 2) Hairdressing or an equivalent qualification.

On this course you will develop the necessary skills and experience to work in the Hairdressing industry as a Stylist. While at College, you will be based in one of our modern hair salons, giving you the opportunity to develop and enhance your practical skills in a realistic working environment and practise your creativity under the supervision of highly experienced and qualified teaching staff. This course will also help you develop your teamwork, good personal conduct and professionalism. You will have the opportunity to showcase your skill and creativity at our end-of-year Hair Show and competition. Trips & Residentials:

There are non-compulsory trips to the Salon International and Clothes Show exhibitions.

Entry Requirements:

You need three grade Cs or above at GCSE, including Maths and English, or NVQ Level 1 Hair or Beauty.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

With this Apprenticeship, you are ready for a supervisory, trainee management or Head Stylist role. You may like to complement your specialist training with Managerial or Business training. Your qualification will make you a valuable asset to your employer, but you can also progress to roles such as Senior Salon Hairdresser, Technician, Cruise Liner Hairdresser, TV/Film Hairdresser, Freelance Hairdresser, Hospital Hairdresser or Prison Hairdresser.

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Beauty Therapy This course is ideal for those who want to learn the skills and gain the experience necessary for a career within the Beauty Therapy Industry. You will learn a wide range of treatment ranging from facials, manicures, pedicure, eye treatments, waxing and make up application. You will also learn about health and safety, developing and maintain effectiveness at work and promoting services and products. Trips & Residentials:

There is the option of a trip to a spa in another country to explore Beauty Therapy in another culture.

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Beauty Therapy This Apprenticeship is based on the National Occupation Standards for Beauty Therapy and is designed for students who want to progress in the profession or run their own salon. As part of this Apprenticeship, you will take the VTCT Diploma (Level 3) Beauty Therapy, allowing you to build upon the skills you already have. The course covers a range of advanced treatment techniques, including electrical face and body treatments, electrolysis, body massage, eyelash extensions and intimate waxing. You will also have the opportunity to complete additional courses in specialist treatments, such as Environ Skincare training, Sono-phoresis, Jane Iredale make up, St Tropez tanning, Gellish nails and threading. We also offer Standing Tall workshops

Trips & Residentials:

Trips include a visit to the Professional Beauty industry showcase at ExCel, London, where you can find out about the latest trends in Beauty Therapy. There is an optional trip to a spa in another country to explore Beauty Therapy in another culture. There may be costs associated with these trips.

You need a NVQ (Level 2) Beauty Therapy qualification and associated GCSE qualifications.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

If you successfully complete this Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3), you will be able to apply for supervisory, trainee management or head therapist roles. You will have the skills and experience to provide a range of advanced facial and body treatments, including electrolysis and body massage treatments. Hospitality & Catering

Entry Requirements:

You need a good level of English and Maths and ideally GCSE English and Maths at grade C. You need to be working in the Hospitality Services industry for the duration of your Apprenticeship.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

Following this course, further training at a higher level and additional work experience, you can progress towards a more senior role in the Hospitality industry. In the long term, if you would like to run your own business or take a managerial position, you might like to consider complementary courses in Business or Management.

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) Professional Cookery This Apprenticeship is designed for people working in a kitchen environment. It aims to help you develop the important skills and knowledge needed to make an effective contribution to a professional kitchen and lay the foundations for a successful career in Professional Cookery. You will explore key, work-relevant areas, including food preparation and cookery, food hygiene and kitchen safety. Trips & Residentials:

There are a variety of trips during this course, including visits to local trade shows, food producers and the Hotel Olympia.

Entry Requirements:

You need a good level of English and Maths, ideally shown by GCSE English and Maths at grade C. You also need to be working in food preparation or cookery role for the duration of the Apprenticeship. If you are not already in post, you need to have an offer of a suitable position before the start of your course.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

The Advanced Apprenticeship allows you to build upon your Level 2 (Intermediate) training and develop your cooking skills further so you can produce more complex dishes. It also helps you to improve your ability to develop menus and control resources. This qualification is designed for people already using advanced craft skills in a working environment. You will train both in the workplace and at Yeovil College, completing practical qualifications, a technical certificate and, if required, Functional Skills qualifications.

Getting you ready for work, higher training and university

College is a very different experience to being at school. Many students say it acts as the perfect step towards higher level training or employment because it allows them to grow in confidence and independence, develop useful and practical life skills and gain work experience that is attractive to employers. Vocational courses accrue UCAS points, so that they offer a route to university, as well as employment or work with training, such as Apprenticeships. Throughout your course, your tutor and lecturer will work with you to plan an individual study programme which helps you to reach your personal goals and takes you a step closer to your preferred career. Vocational courses are generally two year programmes that are made up of two distinct course routes (90 and 180 credits), one qualification per year.

At Yeovil College, we have an excellent range of specialist teaching workshops, classrooms and state of the art resources to give you the very best student experience. In the last year we have opened a brand new Construction centre, new training kitchens for our awards wining Da Vinci Restaurant and Independent Living Centre, a new extended Mac suite, IT Laboratory, brand new University Centre on our main Mudford road campus and more quiet study areas across the campus. Assessment

Vocational courses offer a ‘hands on’ training route, including high levels of practical skill development. Your progress will be measured continually through internally assessed assignment work as well as external assessments and tests. Assessment methods can include presentations, written and practical assignments, research projects, video and making ‘masterpiece objects. Our staff will support and reassure you to develop the skills you need to meet deadlines and demonstrate what you are capable of.

English and Maths

Good English and Maths skills are essential to success, both academically and in the workplace. It is now a government requirement for all students to study English and Maths if you do not achieve a Grade C at GCSE. In addition to your main study programme you will also study Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English if you do not achieve a grade C at GCSE, you will also take part in a work experience element. Eye-catching pieces by approximately 300 students draw in a crowd of art lovers from across the region for the show. This introductory course aims to help you broaden and deepen your understanding of Art & Design through a programme of exciting and interesting project activities. It provides you with the opportunity to develop your Fine Art practice, including life drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, as well as illustration, 3D design, architecture, graphic design, media, visual communication, digital and traditional photography and fashion and textile skills and explore the history of Art & Design. You will discover how play enhances young children’s lives through practical sessions where you will get involved – and messy! This is a wonderfully exciting course that will broaden your knowledge and introduce you to the fulfilling world of working with children.

Do you want a career that is rewarding and stimulating, where no two days are the same and every day you wake up knowing that what you learn and experience will enrich the lives of young children? Then the CACHE Diploma (Level 3) Childcare is the perfect course for you! This course offers you a fantastic opportunity to gain experience and understanding of working with under fives and to learn about children up to age 7. Not only do you get to enrich your knowledge through essential work experience placements, but also through innovative and interactive sessions which compare theory and practice.

Entry Requirements:

As well as a pro-active, can-do attitude and good communication skills with both children and adults, you need at least five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths, or a B or Distinction in a relevant Level 2 qualification, such as a BTEC or CACHE certificate, plus GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above. You also need to have completed two weeks’ work experience in the Early Years sector, supported by a relevant reference. This can be via school placement or an additional voluntary placement. Depending on your choice of work setting while at College, DBS clearance may be required. Experience in the voluntary sector, such as supporting after school clubs, Rainbows or Beavers, is desirable.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

Once you have successfully gained this qualification, you can progress to a Foundation Degree or Honours degree in Early Years Sector at university, stretching your development in this field. Past students have gone on to work in nurseries and schools, as well as finding positions as nannies abroad or working for holiday companies running childcare provision overseas. Practitioners can work in nurseries, nursery schools, reception class in primary schools or as pre-school workers.

Work Experience Opportunities:

You will complete two days of work experience per week during term time. Overall, you will carry out 800 hours of work experience over the two years of the course, working with a range of ages from 0-5. Work experience placements include time with nurseries, pre-schools and school reception year classes. There may be the opportunity to work with a registered childminder (age dependent).

Welcome to the wonderful world of Health & Social Care! This amazing course has been specifically designed to open doors to a career in the industry. You will learn about all aspects of Health & Social care across all age ranges and client groups. Your work experience will help you develop your practical skills and inprove your course work, bringing assignments to life with real examples. Units include Human Lifespan Development, Health & Social Care Values, Communication and Individual Rights and you will get the opportunity to organise many community and fundraising events.

This course is suitable for anyone hoping to follow a career in one of a wide variety of specialist roles within the Health and Social Care sector, such as nursing, occupational therapy, social work or teaching. These roles usually require a university-level or professional qualification and the BTEC Extended Diploma is one way of preparing for this training. This course equips you with the knowledge and skills required for professional roles in the sector, as well as a greater understanding of Health and Social Care organisations, different types of people who access services and their needs.

A work placement is an essential element of the course, allowing you to experience working with different people who access Health & Social Care services in various settings. You will need to be proactive in arranging placements with chosen providers and committed to the work you undertake there.

This course aims to give you the skills and knowledge that you need to work in the Construction industry. Professional Hair & Beauty Salons Welcome to the Hair and Beauty Department. The three best things: 1. Students took part in the end of year hair show and competition which was judged by local employers, the students show cased work to employers, friends family and the general public . The themes were based on an avant-garde and fantasy and allowed them to let their imaginations go wild. 2. Two students from level 2 and 3 beauty therapy took part in World Skills in Milton Keyes. They both did exceptionally well with one student coming 2nd in her heat and will now go to the next stages. 3. when local employers joined the hair and beauty team and students at the college on ‘Industry day’ to do demonstrations, have career talks and give interview advice to learners who were progressing into employment . We have had huge successes this year with the majority of beauty students gaining employment in industry. Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students train in professional salons at the Yeovil College Mudford Road Campus and at the North Dorset Campus in Shaftesbury. Yeovil & Shaftesbury Hair Shows Every year, Yeovil College and the Yeovil College @ North Dorset hold a catwalk show to showcase the styling skills of Hairdressing students. More than 200 students take part, representing Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 full and part-time courses and Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships. School students completing Hairdressing qualifications alongside their GCSEs also style models for the creative extravaganza. In 2015, students creative amazing styles and looks based on themes including Environmental, Fantasy, Historical,

Avant-Garde, Prom and Bridal. Both catwalk shows are open to the public and tickets often sell out as friends, family and members of the public are keen to see what our students have designed for the event. Level 1 Beauty Therapy This course is an excellent introduction to the Beauty Therapy industry. It has been designed to help you grow your practical abilities, as well as develop your creative and artistic skills through nail art, themed face painting and photographic make up. The course emphasises the professional behaviours and ethical working skills that you will need for a successful career in the industry, as well as health and safety and employability skills. You will gain valuable experience with external clients in our professional salon and be encouraged to take part in competitions, helping you to aspire to be the best.

Work Experience Opportunities:

You will help in our professional salon, supporting students on Level 2 and 3 courses as they provide treatments for external clients. Additionally, you are encouraged to find a voluntary work placement to help increase your experience.

Entry Requirements:

You should have either an entry level qualification or GCSEs at grades E to G. A keen interest in Beauty Therapy is vital and you should be prepared to complete voluntary work experience during the course to help you practice and develop your skills.

This course is ideal if you want to begin initial training for a career in the Beauty Industry. During this course, you can develop a comprehensive range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge covering health & safety, facial skincare, waxing, manicures, pedicures, eye treatments, make - up application and reception duties. Students will also take advantage of a range of supplementary courses including St Tropez. You will benefit from professional courses related to salon products including Hara Skincare, Environ Skincare and Jane Iredale mineral make-up. The NVQ Diploma is offered full and part-time at Yeovil College and part-time at Yeovil College @ North Dorset.

This course will help you develop a practical understanding of the underlying principles and skills required for the Hairdressing industry. It has been designed using the National Occupation Standards in Hairdressing to give you the work skills you will need and provide a platform for you to prepare for employment in the industry. This course is available at both Yeovil College and Yeovil College @ North Dorset in Shaftesbury. You will showcase what you have learned at the cross college end-of-year catwalk show and competition.

Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing This course is designed for students who have already achieved a Level 2 Hairdressing qualification and worked in industry, but would like to develop their skills further for a supervisory or management role. You will have the opportunity to cover a range of topic areas, including product promotion, health and safety, Hairdressing consultation services and how to creatively cut hair with a variety of techniques. This course aims to give you a sound foundation in Information Technology. You will gain both practical skills and a knowledge base that can be used in IT applications. The course also gives you the opportunity to develop personal skills needed in the workplace. Completing this qualification will give you a firm foundation in presenting information and using IT in communication. This course is broadly equivalent to two GCSEs.

This highly practical course is designed for people who would like to advance their knowledge of Software Development or Network and System Support. Both strands help you develop your practical IT skills and confidence to carryout software development or hardware and networking technical support activities. Motor Vehicl Centre Motor Vehicle Centre

Motor Vehicle Centre, Yeovil Welcome to the Motor Vehicle Department. The three best things: 1. Centre revamp – includes redecoration, re-allocation of rooms, expansion of ICT suite and a new learner rest room with pool table and table tennis. This provides the learners with an area to relax in during breaks from their busy college day and adequate resources to carry out assessment tasks electronically.. 2. Introduction of IMI E-Portfolio – an electronic assessment system which may be accessed remotely from home enabling learners to progress their coursework at any time.

The Motor Vehicle Training Centre is a friendly environment which offers the excellent level of training needed to work in the Motor Vehicle industry. The Centre has a team of highly experienced and knowledgeable staff who are there to help you learn and develop your technical and other skills. The Centre has a large, fully equipped workshop area designed to simulate the working conditions and expected tasks of a professional garage environment. Specialist equipment includes demonstration bays with lifts, portable and static engine stands, motor vehicle test equipment scanner, engine tuners and a tyre bay. The engineering and fabrication facilities include benches, drills, grinders, MIG welding and hand tools. There are also four separate training rooms on site plus a dedicated ICT suite with audio-visual equipment designed to support you to achieve your full Apprenticeship. Performance Spaces & Events Yeovil College has an excellent reputation for Music and Performing Arts and is proud to have former students who have gone on to great success in the industry. Currently, former Yeovil College students are performing both in the West End and on Broadway, while others have pursued careers in other related areas of the industry, such as music journalism or technical support.

BTEC Extended Diploma (Level 3) Performing Arts

This course allows you to continue developing your knowledge and insight into the workings of the Music industry ready for a successful career in the sector. The Extended Diploma also offers a practical approach to Music, along with wider opportunities to explore the development of popular music and the music industry through performance, composition, recording and promotion. As part of the course, you will record an album of original material, promote and perform your own gigs and develop the skills you need to prepare full scores of your own songs. As well as supporting local and College events with technical services, all students work in bands throughout the course and perform approximately every four to six weeks.

This course allows you to develop skills and knowledge in Performing Arts, preparing you for a career in the industry. Fifth Floor Science Centre If you are studying Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or Physics at Yeovil College, then you will make use of our Fifth Floor Science Centre. Situated on the top floor of the Kingston Building, the Science Centre is an outstanding open-plan laboratory suite with computer access. Yeovil College Sports Centre Welcome to the Sport, Coaching and Fitness Department. The three best things: 1. have contributed huge amount to our community through our Sports Leadership Academy with over 10,000 community voluntary hours over the past 10 years. 2. Running the Bath and West Show Disability Games with over 50 participants and Yeovil and District Primary Schools Athletics Championships with over 300 children taking part. 3. This year we’ve had 6 national level performers in football, netball, rugby, hockey and athletics; men’s football and ladies netball both won their south west regional colleges league, men’s s football also came 2nd in the UK colleges national tournament, mens rugby won the Dorchester 10s tournament; and women’s football won the Somerset colleges partnership tournament. Yeovil College’s Sports Centre Yeovil College’s Sports Centre provides you with access to a multi-purpose sports hall, full equipped fitness centre, two grassed training pitches and is located next to the Yeovil athletics area. Sports Hall As well as being used for classes and other events, our multipurpose Sports Hall is available for hire and is equipped to host a range of sports and activities. These include badminton, five-aside football and volleyball. Our students often use the Sports Hall to host charity fundraisers, such as volleyball or football tournaments. Not only are these events great fun, students from across the College get involved and raise lots of money for some great causes. The Sports Hall is also used by local organisations, such as schools, for area or county finals. Yeovil College students often have the opportunity to run and help at these events, ensuring you gain real experience of sporting events and have the chance to put what you have learned into practice. Feedback from visitors is always excellent and we are proud to host many events year on year.

This industry-recognised qualification aims to give you the underpinning knowledge needed to work in the Sport industry. The National Occupational Standards have been integrated into this course to ensure you are well prepared for employment. NEW for 2015 - Sports Scholarships In September 2015, Yeovil College launched a new exciting scholarship programme, supported by the Yeovil College Bursary Foundation (YCBF) There are up to 8 scholarships available to talented sports students of up to £500. Students need to have represented their school or college at the highest level of sporting performance to apply. Applications will be chosen by an independent panel who represent the YCBF. If you have already achieved the Diploma (Level 3) Sport (Performance & Excellence), this course is an excellent next step. Based on industry-recognised occupational standards, the BTEC Diploma will help you develop your specialist knowledge, practical skills and understanding in areas including nutrition, physiology, fitness, sports massage and sports injuries. You will have the opportunity to gain a wide knowledge of different sports while developing an in-depth analysis of your chosen sports through our Sports Academies and enrichment programmes. You will also have the opportunity to complete the Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA) and Higher Sports Leadership Award (HSLA) during this course, as well as a Level 1 National Governing Body Award and First Aid qualification. This course will give you an excellent, all round experience and a real head start at university or work.

You will complete two weeks’ work experience in addition to organising events, officiating and coaching.

The course is equivalent to two A Levels and gives you 280 UCAS points. Work Experience Opportunities:

You will complete a two week placement in addition to organising and running events and coaching in the community as a volunteer. To achieve the Certificate in Community Sports Leadership, you need to be able to complete ten voluntary hours within community football.

Entry Requirements:

You must have a strong link to football either as a player, official or coach. You need at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language. If you have a D grade in GCSE English and/or Maths, you will have the opportunity to take these qualifications alongside your Diploma. If you have E grade or lower, you will be offered Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English.

The Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels, increasing your opportunities for employment and allowing you to progress to a range of university degree courses, such Football Studies or the Foundation degree in Sports Coaching & Fitness available at the University Centre Yeovil. Travel & Tourism

This course is a fantastic opportunity for talented football players and those interested specifically in coaching football. It will allow you specialise specifically in Football and develop your knowledge and skills in a range of relevant areas, including anatomy, physiology, nutrition, technical skills and athlete lifestyle. As part of this course, you can achieve an awarding body qualification which allows you to relate your Football knowledge in a theoretical context to all units. You will access nine hours of training and match play each week as part of the Football Elite Programme. If you decide to ‘top up’ this course to a full BTEC Extended Diploma, you will have the equivalent of three A Levels and be able to apply for a range of Higher Education courses, including degrees, and employment opportunities across the spectrum of professional sport.

This is a nationally-recognised qualification within the fitness industry, allowing you to progress into the work place as part of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). Entry Requirements:

Welcome to the Uniformed Public Services Department. The single best thing: 1. We Had an exciting year which included taking part in many work related experiences. This included students taking part in a week in the life of the Royal Marines, a week in the life of the British Army, visiting the Avon and Somerset Police Headquarters, visiting Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team as well as gaining many exciting guest talks from likes of the Chief Inspector for East Somerset Police Service and Army Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers.

Level 1 Uniformed Public Services, Outdoor Adventurous Activities and Sport This introductory course provides you with the perfect starting point for a career or further training in this exciting sector. You will have the opportunity to study the various uniformed services, such as the Emergency Services, Armed Forces and HM Revenue and Customs in detail. This course combines practical and theory session to increase your understanding of the wide range of career opportunities available. You will also be able to take part in various sporting activities, including football, basketball and hockey, as well as training in our fitness suite. Trips/Residentials:

There are a number of trips and activities available to you on this course, such as visits to lifeboat stations, prisons, fire stations and police stations. You will also have the opportunity to join our competitive sports teams, such as football, basketball, rugby, netball, volleyball and badminton.

Level 2 in Uniformed Public Services, outdoor adventurous activities and Sport This qualification has been specifically designed to provide an insight into the Uniformed Public Services, such as the Armed Forces, Emergency Services and Prison Service. You will take part in practical activities to develop personal and vocational skills relevant to the sector. You will also benefit from visits, guest speakers and a residential to supplement the learning experience. In addition, you will have the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Trips/Residentials:

You will take part in trips to relevant sites such as fire and police stations. Other destinations include Chepstow Army base, Cobbs Cross, Ham Hill, Avonmouth Docks, Yeovilton, Weymouth, Exeter and Aldershot. As well as meeting personnel from the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force, Coldstream Guards, Prison Service and Police Service, these visits give you the opportunity to develop skills as varied as map reading, raft building and rope work.

You need a range of GCSEs at Grade D and above. There may be the opportunity for you to take Functional Skills courses and GCSEs alongside this course.

Studying at Level 2- A Pathway to Success Reading this prospectus, you can see that all our courses are labelled with a Level, usually 1, 2 or 3. Level 2 courses represent a wide range of qualifications which are the equivalent to GCSE grades A* to C. Most Level 2 courses take one year, allowing time for a typical school leaver to progress on to study a two year Level 3 qualification with government funding.

English and Maths at Yeovil College Good English and Maths skills are essential to success both academically and in the workplace. As such, Yeovil College aims to support you throughout your course so that you can develop your English and Maths skills to the highest possible level.

Why choose a Level 2 course? Students choose to study Level 2 qualifications for many reasons. For some vocational subjects, new students must start at Level 2 or even Level 1 so that they can build up their skills and knowledge ready for the next qualification, every step taking them closer to being an industry professional. For others, a Level 2 qualification marks the next step after achieving Level 1 qualifications at school or college.

English and Maths training is always personalised to you and your needs. At the Enrolment Day, we will use computer-based testing to help us understand your strengths and areas we can help you to develop. We will also look at the English and Maths qualifications you already have. Most students fall into two main categories; those with a C grade at GCSE level and those without. Students without a C at GCSE If you are 16 to 19 years old and have not achieved a C grade in GCSE English or Maths yet, we will provide you with special sessions to support you to work towards achieving this goal. If you have a D or equivalent, you will be able to take a one year GCSE class, giving you the opportunity to gain your C grade in a supportive, specialist environment. If you have a D grade or below, you may be able to take a one year Functional Skills course. This gives you the chance to gain a widely-recognised qualification and take a step towards a GCSE C grade. Students with a C at GCSE If you already have C grades in English and Maths at GCSE, there are many opportunities for you to progress your knowledge and skills in these subjects. This may be through English and Maths development as part of your main full-time course or an A Level, for example. Whatever you choose to study as your main subject at Yeovil College, English and Maths will be embedded in the teaching. As such, you will have the opportunity to gain a qualification, such as an A Level or a BTEC Diploma, and your teachers will support you as you develop your vital Maths and English skill.

This course will help you develop your ability to read and understand different types of writing, write in a range of styles and improve your speaking and listening skills. The course covers personal and narrative writing, analysis of a novel, a response to a Shakespeare play and a selection of poetry from other cultures. Entry Requirements:

You need four GCSEs at grade D to E, or equivalent. You must have grade D in GCSE English or Level 2 Functional Skills.

Career Opportunities/Progression:

Gaining a grade C or above for GCSE Maths provides a good foundation for progression on to many other courses, from Physics and Engineering to Sport Science, and future employment. A C grade in Maths is a good grounding for many different careers. It is a requirement for some professions, such as Teaching.

Not attended school or been out of education? Students who have been home educated, out of the UK school system due to living overseas or have had their education disrupted due for another reason, such as illness, may also decide that a Level 2 course is better for them. If this applies to you, GCSE English and GCSE Maths should be the cornerstone of your programme of study. In addition to English and Maths, you can choose one additional Level 2 qualification.

BTEC Extended Certificate (Level 2) Applied Science

If you would like to progress to A Levels, which are Level 3 qualifications, and want to be able to choose from a broad a range of subjects, you should consider the Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science (see page 105). If you achieve a Distinction for your Extended Certificate, you can access to a range of A Levels at Yeovil College. Foundation Learning Welcome to the Foundation Learning Department. The three best things: 1. Students being able to access a range of day trips and residential, including Calvert Trust in Exmoor, London, Bristol and GoApe in Haldon Forest, to challenge themselves both physically and mentally as well as experience travelling to these locations by train and bus. 2. Progression of the majority of students into further study, employment and training, showing just how far this group of students have been able to progress from when they first joined us to overcome their personal challenges and experience success. 3. Leavers events, where the students took part in the planning and organising to make sure they got the send-off their hard work deserved and gave everyone the opportunity to share in their successes.

Work Preparation, Work Progression and Independent Living Skills Foundation Learning offers a variety of courses that are individually tailored for young people with additional needs. The College has an excellent track record of successfully supporting these students and many progress on to other programmes of education and/or employment. Students learn in small, friendly groups with high levels of support.

Work Progression This is a one year course. Learners join this course if they need a year to improve their skills before further studies and/or employment. For other learners, this is a progression route from the Work Preparation Programme which helps them consolidate and develop skills learnt during the first two years. Project search Project Search is a one year, full-time course which offers students with learning difficulties the opportunity to work as interns with Yeovil District Hospital. Based at the Hospital, students learn real skills in three different departments over the course. Students are supported by a tutor and a job coach, who also supports them as they look for paid employment at the end of the course. Individual Study Programme Students with learning difficulties who join a Foundation Learning programme at Yeovil College may also have the opportunity to study part of their course with other departments. The Work Preparation Programme A two year course designed for learners with moderate learning difficulties. It focuses on the skills necessary to prepare them for other courses, independent living and/or employment. The Independent Living Skills This is a two year course. It helps learners to develop and consolidate their independent living skills alongside work skills, if appropriate. This course is often a progression route from the Work Preparation Programme and allows students who need a little longer to consolidate skills to learn at their own pace.

Curriculum Design We offer a project-based curriculum where full-time students learn vocational and life skills in a realistic environment. This can enable the transition from education to work and could offer routes for some students into mainstream education. We have a strong commitment to the improvement of Functional Skills (Maths and English) and the achievement of personal goals. The curriculum is based on the needs of our students and can change from year to year, however projects we have offered in the past include: Independent Living Skills All full-time students access an Independent Living Skills programme which includes Shopping & Cooking for Independence, Social Skills, Relationships, Home Management, Mobility/Accessing the Community, Money Matters and Leisure & Personal Skills. Community Awareness This is about exploring the community around us and enables students to familiarise themselves with the College, Yeovil and the many facilities available, which students can then explore in their own leisure time.

Retail & Enterprise This project is based around the skills needed to work in a retail environment. It covers areas including investigating the Retail industry, Health & Safety, Customer Service and Selling & Stock Management. Learners have the opportunity to run a small business and several stalls throughout the year. Hospitality & Catering Learners gain the skills required for working in a Catering environment, including Food Preparation, Table Setting, Customer Service, Health & Hygiene and Food Service. Students are also involved in running a small cafĂŠ. Get Active! This project is delivered through a wide range of practical sporting and leisure activities. These experiences develop an understanding of healthy living and the employment skills for working in the Leisure industry.

Performing Arts Learners plan and take part in various performances throughout the year. Confidence and skills are gained in Music, Dance and Drama. Learners also investigate lighting, music and stagecraft. Residentials Every year, our learners are encouraged to attend a week-long residential trip. Destinations have included Wales, France, London, Torquay and Spain. Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge The annual Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge is an optional opportunity for learners to train, camp and walk on Dartmoor â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a fantastic experience for all! The Progression Pathways Programme aims to help you improve your skills so that you can achieve your goals – whether that is studying a Level 1 or 2 course at college or getting a job. The one year programme focuses on improving your Maths, English and ICT skills, your personal/ social skills and your work skills. You will also have the opportunity to participate in your choice of vocational options. We select the vocational choices each year according to the need and interest of new learners but last year they included; Introduction to Care, Catering, Business Admin/ICT and Art.

The innovative two storey centre includes a new kitchen/living area, a training bedroom and a bathroom to enable students to develop the personal skills to live independently and employability skills potentially too. All training equipment is height adjustable and fully accessible for wheelchair users and students with reduced mobility.

There is the opportunity to go on a residential trip. Yeovil College also aims to provide a full range of exciting resources and learning opportunities, including engaging guest speakers.

Most recently, the College was awarded the President’s XV Recognition Award Runners up trophy for services to Grassroots rugby in primary schools and local community clubs. Charity Fundraising Many of our students decide to collect money and supplies for national and local charities while at Yeovil College. In recent years, students in different departments have supported charities including the St Margaret’s Hospice, the Yeovil College Bursary Foundation, Help for Heroes, Yeovil Women’s Hospital’s Flying Colours appeal, Children in Need, Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day and Operation Christmas Child. Many of these collections were supported by staff and students from across the College. Volunteering and Community Work You may also like to volunteer in the community or get involved in local campaigns. For example, Music students have been heavily involved in the Pretty Vacant campaign, Buskfest and many more local events. A student union is a unique and (in our opinion) very important aspect of college life that you don’t get at school, so let us tell you a bit about what we do and how we make life at Yeovil College more fun and interesting. Events YCSU organises parties, shopping trips and social events for students at the College throughout the year. These are a great opportunity to get to know other students away from college and have some fun. We also organise our own music gigs! NUS Extra Card One of the best things about a student union is NUS Extra card. This is a national discount card for students, which means you get money off at lots of big name high street shops and online retailers. Tutor Group Representatives The voice and opinions of our students are very important to Yeovil College, so we have made sure that there are a number of ways that you can give feedback on issues related to your life here. Our students can talk to one of a team of student representatives about issues that matter to them, such as the quality of teaching, facilities or services available or college policies and procedures. When you join Yeovil College, you will become part of a tutor group. Financial Support If you are aged over 16 and having difficulty meeting the financial needs of your course, you may be able to apply for financial support. Most support is means-tested and only available to students who meet certain criteria. As such, we recommend you speak with our Student and Customer Services Team for more information as soon as possible. Please note all information is correct at the time of publication, but is subject to change and annual review. 16-19 Bursary Funds A Guaranteed Bursary is currently available for learners who are in care or care leavers, receiving Income Support, Universal Credit or receiving both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment. A Discretionary Bursary is available for learners with a household income below a certain level, currently £30,000 per academic year. 19+ Adult Discretionary Support Funds These are available for students who are over 19 with a personal income below £ £26,000 or, where students are living with a partner and have a household income of less than £ £36,000.. These awards can help with courserelated costs such as equipment and materials and can also help towards childcare. This does not cover students 24+ who are attending a course at Level 3 or above and eligible for the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. Childcare Support 16-19 Childcare Support The Care to Learn scheme provides financial support for childcare for young people up to the age of 20 while they are in education or training. Yeovil College Bursary Foundation Launched in 2004, the Yeovil College Bursary Foundation (YCBF) is a charity which gives annual bursaries of approximately £500 to hard working students, who, for a variety of reasons, would find it hard to stay at college and complete their studies without additional financial support. Students use this money to help with purchases, such as specialist equipment, kit or tools, travel costs or computers to help with their study. Somerset County Council offers a bicycle hire scheme to students studying a full-time Further Education course in the county. Students pay a deposit and one-off charge to use the bicycle for a year. Frequently Asked Questions I’m not able to come to the Information Evenings. Can I come at another time? Of course! You can contact us at any time in the year for a campus tour or a chat about the courses we have on offer. Just call the Student and Customer Services team on 01935 423921 or email enrol@yeovil.ac.uk for more details. I’m really nervous about starting college! You are not on your own! It is an anxious time for students who have spent a long time at secondary school and who are now embarking on new experiences at college. We work hard to ensure that your time at college is exciting, productive and rewarding and we have an excellent track record in helping new students settle in quickly and happily. I can’t decide on a course. Who can I ask for help? There are lots of people who you can ask for help when discussing choices after school. Your Head of House or Year Tutor, Careers Teacher or Careers Adviser can help you to select the most appropriate course. Don’t forget that you can also call us too. Contact the Student and Customer Services Team on 01935 423921 for help and advice. I left school a while ago. Do you accept employer references? Yes. Please add the details on your application form. You will also need to have evidence of previous examination results already obtained, although mature applicants have more flexible entry requirements. What if I don’t get the grades I need? Use the entry requirements in this prospectus to help you make a realistic decision on the course(s) you could study with us. You can find details of entry requirements on page XXX and the course information pages. If your actual examination results are not what you expected or you have changed your mind, we can discuss the options open to you. Call us on 01935 423921.

Do I have to pay for books and equipment? There may be additional costs involved in purchasing books, specialist equipment/materials or taking part in field trips. You will be given all this information prior to starting with us, usually at your first interview or during information evenings. Also use the course information in this prospectus and on www.yeovil. ac.uk as a guide. Do I have to wear an ID Badge at Yeovil College? Yes. All students and staff must wear photo ID badges at all times while on campus to ensure everyone’s safety. Yeovil College takes security very seriously and has established a close relationship with the local Community Police Officer, who holds frequent beat surgeries for students on site. Can I drive to college? You can, but there are a limited number of parking spaces and you will need a permit to display in your car. Make sure you tick the parking permit box on your application form to request one. Many of our students use public transport to get to us however (more details on page XX). There is ample parking space for bicycles and mopeds and we are within easy walking distance for many people living in Yeovil. You haven’t answered my question! Who can I speak to? Parents’ Event

Application forms are available from your Careers Teacher, careers offices in Somerset and Dorset, from the College Reception and an on-the College website www.yeovil.ac.uk. Two copies have also been included at the end of this prospectus. This means you can practice before filling out your final form.

In June each year, we invite the parents/guardians of new students to a special parents evening. It is a great opportunity for them to meet your new lecturers, see where you will be studying and ask staff any questions they may have.

When to Apply You can apply from September 2015 applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis, so apply early to have a better chance of getting on the course you really want. What happens next? Once we receive your application form: • We let you know that we have received your application and contact you with any queries. • Next, you will be invited to an interview. Most interviews take place between 5pm and 7.30pm at the main College campus in Yeovil or at the Yeovil College @ North Dorset Campus. In some cases, interviews may take place during the day at your school. Interviews begin in October for courses starting the following year.

• At the interview, you will meet a member of staff who will talk to you about your strengths and career ambitions and make sure the choose will get you where you want to be. • After your interview, you will be sent a letter offering you a place at Yeovil College. This may be conditional, which means you have to achieve specific exam results or demonstrate certain skills before starting the course. • If you are happy with the offer, you need to sign the form and return it to us. If you change your mind at a later date and want to do a different course, you can move to another one as long as you meet the entry requirements.
