OUR COMPANY INTRIUCTION

Roots Africa is a non-profit venture whose mission is to combat hunger and poverty in Africa by connecting academic institutions and experts in the US to farming communities in Africa. We have a vision where through smart farming methods every hardworking farming family can guarantee their next meal. As students collaborate with university students to find context-specific solutions to farming, they become culturally aware global citizens. Students in US Chapters travel to Africa to work with students in our African chapters to provide extension training and work in development projects in farming communities. They also help to prepare plans and do research to support the work of African farming projects. ROOTS AFRICA also fundraise for projects, the international trips, and to meet the local needs of people where Roots Africa works. In the U.S. Roots Africa chapters host a global collective in which they bring together minds from across student organizations to discuss sustainability, international development, and issues in current agriculture. Winter and summer breaks are utilized for international travel

ROOTS STUDENTS CLUB

Students in higher education can become members of a Roots Africa chapter at their institution and connect with a youth organization or Roots chapter in Africa. The goal is to collaboratively develop solutions and projects for agricultural challenges in a specific region or community in an African country. Students share stories and visions of the future as well as discuss research and current events through regular virtual meetings. These virtual interactions allow for an empathetic team effort towards the discovery of challenges and solutions. These solutions are then developed into impactful projects for students to implement and support from home countries. Projects decided on between the groups of youth are primarily funded through grassroots fundraising where students themselves communicate Roots Africa’s mission in order to gather funds and other resources needed to implement. Roots Africa strongly advises each chapter to fundraise a minimum annual amount to support the development and continuation of projects.

NEXT GEN-FARMER OUTREACH INITIATIVE This program seeks to engage and transform African youth into agricultural activists in their communities. We engage high school students in three schools in the Ganta region of Liberia. We utilize a dynamic approach that meets the high schoolers where they are: In the classrooms of their campus through presentations, outside of the classroom through a demonstration site, and at home through mentoring and continuous support. The classroom experience includes classroom presentations on key agricultural topics including Soil health and agriculture innovation. Students learn about the wide scope of agriculture and explore the variety of agricultural products in their daily lives. The onsite demonstration farm includes demonstration gardens on each high school campus to teach hands-on lessons on sustainable agriculture. Students are able to learn and apply these lessons at home. The mentor program includes a mentor-mentee relationship between Liberian college students and Liberian high school students.

COMPOSTING INITIATIVE This project encompasses all aspects of sustainability. Composting is not only a sustainable method of maintaining fertile and healthy soil, but it also brings in sustainable revenue for our counterparts. Compost promotes higher yields of agricultural crops and reduces the need for synthetic fertilizer. Our counterparts create compost and sell it in their local farming communities. The compost is produced and sold to the school administration and local farmers. Funds generated from these initiatives are used to fund the Next-Gen Farmer Outreach program.

TINY BOOK INITIATIVE The Tiny Book Program is an innovative method of creating scaled-down textbooks that allow for the mass production and distribution of knowledge concerning sustainable agriculture. It cost less than $3 to producer a single book. Most agricultural textbooks are not made for the tropical West African climate, making it difficult for students and farmers to learn about sustainable and innovative agriculture. That is why we emphasize that the information in these books are produced collaboratively with our students in Africa. These textbooks can be used in a school setting to aid in lessons, as well as by farmers and communities to educate themselves, whether the recipient is able to read or not.

The Farmer to Farmer Volunteer Program plays a key role as Farmer Volunteers provide program participants and students with support and guidance for effective program implementation. This program is designed to enhance the impact of the student clubs by ensuring that all student-led projects have expert technical assistance from experienced farmers and researchers. The Farmer Volunteers will have the option to travel with students and provide advice on the implementation of projects or to travel separately to monitor and evaluate in-country projects.
