1912 Scout Camp at Hunstanton 2018 sees the 110th Birthday of Syston Scout Group. In January 1908 the Scouting Movement was officially launched and Syston registered in February 1908. Syston became the first official enrolled troop in Leicestershire consisting of 12 members with two patrol leaders. As part of an alternative programme a drum and fife band was started - the first Scout band in the UK, which is still active today. The Scout Association has progressed

Brain Tumour Charity Fundraiser Local man John Walters was diagnosed with a grade 4 Globlastoma brain tumour in July 2016. For his wife Rachel and 15year-old son Charlie along with their family their world was turned upside down. Rachel’s parents suggested fundraising for the Brain Tumour Charity by holding a raffle evening at their local bowls club.

said he would like to have a sportsman evening with an auction. So Rachel took this onboard and although she thought she didn’t know any sports personalities, she managed to get it all organised, and on 30th September 2017 they held a dinner at Scraptoft Golf Club with 120 guests and seven sports personalities, with the help of Neil Back who invited George Chuter, Brett Deacon, Matte Poole, Steve Walsh, Chris Jones and surprise guest Martin Johnson, whom the family didn’t know was attending until the evening. The evening was a great success, with an after-dinner speech from Vajiha from the Brain Tumour Charity. Rachel said she couldn’t thank the sportsmen enough for giving their time. She also wants to thank all of the businesses who donated items for the auctions and raffle, these include Natural World Pet Store, Gamble & Hollis Butchers, Co-op, Pukka Pies, Paper Moon Gift Shop, Wilkinson’s and Tesco to name just a few. An amazing amount of £11,624.92 was raised from various functions over the year including Bowls club events, Rachel’s first ever marathon, donations and raffle.

Mothering Sunday What a joyous occasion this was as members of the 10am and eleven30 congregations met to worship together. Revd. John Leonard conducted the service which was led by the Pioneer team with the theme of thanksgiving using the story of the ten lepers, only one of whom thought to return to Jesus after they were cured, to thank Him. During the service the children created small thanksgiving gifts to give to their parents and members of the congregation. After the service there were refreshments in the hall. Eleven30 The youth group members of this congregation have been exploring their faith with the Junior Alpha course and have included a visit to Costa Coffee!

Poppy Appeal Syston & District The total collected for the area was £12,106.06. The branch would like to thank all the businesses for allowing the collection boxes on their premises, but most of all to thank all the people that donated their hard earned money, this will be used to help veterans that have fallen on hard times. 2018 marks the centenary of the end of WW1 and plans are being made to mark this occasion with the return of the remembrance parade to being the 3rd largest in the county. More details in next months issue of the Stn.
At the last service they took up the Jenga challenge. They were reflecting on their decisions and the consequences of their actions, linking with Jesus in the temple when he became angry because people were using the temple as a market place. (John: 13-22) This group meets during the usual eleven30 services on the 1st and 3rd Sundays in the month as well as at additional times. Night at the Music Hall This evening, which was a party for members of the congregation, organised by the social committee had to be postponed due to the bad weather so we are looking forward to seeing if we can organise for late April! Women’s World Day of Prayer The Christian churches in Syston met in the Methodist Church on Friday 2nd March for this service created by the women of Suriname. The theme of the service was All God’s Creation is Very Good! During the service a PowerPoint presentation showed views of this beautiful country in the north east of South America where many religions all exist in peace. The official language is Dutch but also a Creole language is widely spoken. The theme of the service was concentrated on the overuse of plastic, for example a bunch of bananas was presented but in a plastic bag. The bag was dropped on the floor and the bananas placed on the table. Later the plastic bags were collected from the floor to highlight how much plastic is used. It was an intensely thoughtprovoking service. The service concluded with refreshments in the Link.

This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”. During early March, Bridget Blair, a program producer from BBC Radio Leicester, along with Josie Hutchinson, Chris Gutterridge and I went along to Kilworth Conifer Nursery to record a program with the owner Derek Spicer. Derek is the number one conifer expert in the UK and when I was a director of Goscote Nurseries, Del, as I then knew him supplied us with many new and outstanding conifers.
Derek Spicer, together with a fellow European conifer expert spent over two years writing and photographing so many species and varieties of conifers that the Royal Horticultural Society had to produce their work in two volumes, which weigh around 4 kilos. The colour of each conifer is outstanding, so much so that we spent almost half an hour just browsing through them. We then walked around the nursery looking at the numerous conifers, not only debating their merits in form and colour, but also which would be suitable for the average small garden and also those that would make good container plants for a terrace, or balcony. If I had to choose just one of all of those we had seen it would be Pinus mugo
‘Winter Gold’, a Swiss mountain Pine whose foliage turns an outstanding gold during the winter. After our two hours meandering around the nursery, Del’s wife Caroline invited us into the house for an excellent lunch. Here I had better point out that Kilworth Conifers is a wholesale nursery for the trade. The other Caroline, Miss Muddy Knees, is once more busy in my garden doing jobs like clearing all of the moss, which the snow has brought down off my house roof, also cutting back all of dead foliage from perennials. I also got her to dig out many of the Forget-me-not and Arum italicum seedlings that were starting to seed themselves amongst many of my choicer perennials. This year most of my daffodils started to come into flower almost three weeks later than previous years, so during early March my wife Vi had to purchase Daffodils in bud from a local supermarket. However, all of my Helleborus came through very well. The hybrids were bent down with the snow, but as the snow melted they came back upright and will give me flowers from March until late April. Many of my Helleborus have beautifully freckled spots which cover a great deal of the flowers, so I decided to cut a number of the flowers off and float them in a dish of water to show you how attractive they are, see picture above right. Many Helleborus, especially the double flowering ones are inclined to hang their heads so you have to both bend down and turn the flowers up, or have them in raised containers to enable you to admire them.
Helleborous ‘Walbertons Rosemary’ is different in that it holds its flowers outward facing so they look you in the face. This has a lovely pink flower and as it seems reluctant to set seed it flowers over a longer period. I have now planted my chitted first earl potato ‘Swift’ and my second early ‘Charlotte’ in 50 litre black tree tubs. Not outside, but in my cold greenhouse. I use a mixture of one third each of multipurpose compost, John Innes Number 3 compost and my own twelve month old garden compost and into every 50 litres of compost I incorporate a handful of Osmacote slow release fertiliser. When planting in containers or potato grow sacks, first put six inches (15cm) of compost in the container and then, according to container size, place three, or five potato tubers on the compost and cover the tubers with a couple of inches of compost. Then, as they grow, add more compost, but always leave a few green leaves above the added compost until you get to within an inch (25mm) of the top of the container or sack. In my cold greenhouse I have also sowed my ‘St George’ and ‘Firestorm’ runner beans in cell trays and as soon as these had grown their first true leaves they will be potted on into 9cm pots. If there is a risk of frost always cover the plants with horticultural fleece to help prevent frost damage.

Be wary of malicious, criminal or inappropriate websites: Use your instincts and common sense. Check for presence of an address, phone number and/or email contact – often indications that the website is genuine. If in doubt, send an email or call to establish authenticity. If there is NO padlock in the browser window or ‘https://’ at the beginning of the web address to signify that it is using a secure link, do not enter personal information on the site. Avoid ‘pharming’ by checking the address in your browser's address bar after you arrive at a website to make sure it matches the address you typed. This will avoid ending up at a fake site even though you entered the address for the authentic one – for example ‘eebay’ instead of ‘ebay. Be wary of websites which promote schemes that involve the recruitment of others, receiving money for other people or advance payments. Be wary of websites that are advertised in unsolicited emails from strangers. Cookies: Cookies are files on your computer,

Vice-president, Mrs S. Franklin welcomed members and visitors to New Barkby WI’s March meeting. A recent social evening had raised £76.00 for Denman College appeal. After business matters were dealt with, there was a warm welcome for Mrs Brenda Featherstone, accompanied by her husband, David, who acted as deputy chef, while Brenda talked about ‘Cooking for Spring’. She is a sheep farmer, but away from her farmhouse she demonstrates several cookery dishes, from soup to a chicken and tomato crumble, then onto a shepherd’s pudding (no shepherd involved!) and a pineapple and mandarin cheesecake. Everyone’s taste-buds were tingling, and on a chilly evening, everyone was rewarded with plenty of tasty morsels to sample. Brenda talked about her family life, the types of food she cooks, using a variety of ingredients and different gadgets to assist the processes. David made sure that the dishes were well-cooked and just the right temperature for tasting. Also, most of the utensils were Brenda’s own, so with disposable cups and bowls, there was very little cleaning away to do. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs S. Franklin. The competition for a decorated hen’s egg was won by Mrs V. Cobb. The raffle prizes were won by Mrs M. Gamble and Miss E. Loder. The tea hostesses were Mrs V. Cobb and Mrs J. Goulden. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 4th April, Recycling with a Difference, Sue Drage. 7.30pm at Syston Community Centre. Visitors always welcome.

Feedback on MUGA Consultation As many of you will be aware, Syston Town Council have potentially been allocated monies for a multi-use games area (MUGA) for the benefit of the youth of Syston. This facility, funded as a result of Charnwood Borough Council S106 allocated monies, consists of a fenced all weather surface games area similar to, but significantly smaller in size (21 metre x 11 metre) to that at Wreake Valley Academy which is a full size pitch. Various locations for the MUGA were considered and following discussions at Council, the location favoured by members was decided to be the Memorial Park on Necton Street. In an effort to engage the views of residents, the Council carried out a public consultation on the matter. This took the form of public notices on the town’s notice boards, information on the website and a mail shot to residents in the immediate vicinity of Memorial Park; a public meeting was also held just before Christmas.
Results of the consultation are shown below. Letter drops to houses 56 Notice boards 7 Returns 17 For 2 Against 15 Consultation Forms were also placed in the library and local shops, schools and on Syston Town Council social media sites as well as being referenced in Syston Town News along with the Consultation Meeting date. As you can see, the majority of replies returned a negative response. Again, in an effort to listen to the views of residents, the matter was returned to the Amenities Committee for discussion. The result of this was to decide not to install the MUGA on the Memorial Park but to look at other potential sites; this will be included in the agenda at the next Amenities Committee meeting on 10th April. We would welcome the views of any Syston residents on this; please contact us either by email mailbox@systontc.org.uk or by writing to the Council at The Town Manager, Community Centre, School Street,
Syston Leics. LE7 1HN Additionally, you are most welcome to attend the meeting of the council Amenities Committee at the community centre on Tuesday 10th April at 7.30pm.

Dear Syston Town News I have been a resident in Syston for 44 years and have always supported my local shops etc, I was sorry to hear that the Co-op was closing on Saturday 24th February, having used it over the years and talking to local people it was a local way of life for many. When my husband died, the staff and everyone was so kind in the store, they gave me a coffee and a sit down in the office until I was able to carry on with my shopping as I had a bit of a panic attack. I would just like to say a big Thank you to all concerned at the Co-op for helping me all those years ago. Good Luck for the future. Thanks Mrs C Tebbutt

Syston U3A Once Again Setting the Pace The Syston Bowling Club was packed to capacity on Tuesday 13th February when 10 teams, accompanied by a number of enthusiastic supporters, took part in a Syston U3A Pub Quiz. The event was, in fact, a ‘test drive’ of the format which, it is planned, will be used in the first ever inter-U3A event involving the 23 active groups in the Leicestershire and Rutland Regional Network. Six rounds of questions, set and presented by Syston U3A Chairman, Colin Grimes, put the groups through their paces. At the close of the final round, ‘The Birders’ (57/70) emerged as winners, narrowly beating ‘Brij’ by a margin of only two points (55/70). Dave and Jacqueline Hitchin, The Kate Hall and John Winter of Bowling ‘The Birders’ proudly display their winners’ medals. They Club had will now represent Syston at kindly arranged the main event in March. for their Bar to be available and refreshments were served at half-time under the supervision of Gillie Clarke and Joyce Burdon.
THIS SPACE COULD BE WORKING FOR YOU! Chris Ringrose, Michael and Pat Wherton and Janet Downes, “SAD”, ponder their answers in a packed clubhouse.
Pleased with the way the evening had gone, Colin Grimes said: “Once again, Syston is leading the way. We are the first U3A to take up the challenge of organising a Regional inter-U3A competitive event. We have fourteen teams from nine U3As due to take part in the main event in the same venue on 13th March. The experience gained in our internal “test drive” indicates that we have the right structure for the occasion and the resultant scores indicate that we have achieved the right level of difficulty in the questions. There was universal enthusiasm for the event – so much so that it is possible that such evenings might become a regular feature of the Syston U3A calendar. We look forward to welcoming the other U3As to Syston and, hopefully, on the back of this experience, to some of them devising and offering other inter-U3A events in the future. We are, of course, grateful to the Syston Bowling Club for their hospitality and co-operation.”

Alongside these current local development proposals, the Leicester and Leicestershire long-term ‘Strategic Growth Plan’ to 2050 is also currently out for consultation until 5th April 2018 (http://www.llstrategicgrowthplan.org.uk). Among the measures proposed in the plan is the creation of an ‘A46 Expressway’ by-passing Leicester to the east and cutting through the land just to the east of Thurmaston, through the western edge of Syston and connecting up to the ‘Hobby Horse Roundabout’. I know there is real concern that this would further eat in to the rural surroundings of the village, leading to further in-fill housing development, with the added pressures on existing infrastructure. I will continue to work hard to make sure the views of our town are heard loud and clear, and would encourage any Syston residents who have particular views on the ‘Strategic Growth Plan’ proposals to read and respond to the consultation, and to copy them to me at: Edward.argar.mp@parliamemt.uk so that I can ensure they are reflected in my responses to the authors of the proposals.

Is Syston and Area Being over Developed
Residents of East Goscote were first alerted to the proposed Gladman development by the Syston Town News Facebook page on 1st March 2018. The post by Syston Town News shared Gladman’s link to their website inviting feedback and also stated that Gladman had sent out brochures notifying 400 affected residents in the area. Gladman were to hold an exhibition at East Goscote Village Hall on Wednesday 7th March 2018. The proposal is for 300 homes adjacent to and at the rear of the Rearsby Roses/Lilac Way in East Goscote. Gladman Land/ Developments are a land promoter and generally work on a ‘no winno fee basis’, applying for planning permission on the landowner’s behalf and then taking their commission when the land is sold to the highest bidder. BBC One’s Countryfile recently described Gladman as ‘speculative’ and criticising them for not considering the needs of local people. A group of neighbours in East Goscote were discussing the Gladman plans and found that they were all strongly opposed to the development and decided to hold a meeting to decide what to do about the proposal.
In the last two months there have been several planning and pre-applications for houses in our area. You can contact Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) planning office to make your comments. The planning application (P/18/0611/2) for 220 houses on Melton Road Queniborough was submitted 16th March 2018. The total number of houses, if all these developments go ahead and including the ones already being built, would bring the total new homes to over 1200! This is addition to the 4,500 planned around Barkby and Barkby Thorpe. Add to that the plans for a major link road the A46 Expressway which would go cut through Syston at a point yet to be decided. We feature two articles here that highlight the problems our area faces with this sudden bombardment of plans. Please make your comments to CBC. Since Owen’s BABTAG update another two pre-plannng applications have emerged. 300 homes at East Goscote and up to 195 joining the Barkby Road Estate to Turkey point near the junction for South Croxton, Syston.
The main issues around the development are: ● A 30% increase in residents in a rural village without any proposed plans for new infrastructure or services eg. doctors, dentists, schools ● Loss of identity between the Wreake Valley villages ● Increased traffic in the local area ● Destruction of local wildlife and open space ● Increased pollution and reduced air quality The meeting uncovered that none of the

residents had received a brochure from Gladman. They decided to deliver leaflets to as many of the residents of East Goscote and Rearsby as possible, informing them of the plans and Gladman’s exhibition. It seemed clear that Gladman wanted to keep the exhibition (and its plans for development) as quiet as possible so as not to attract opposition. The group decided to set up a Facebook page to gather support for their campaign and set up ‘Keep East Goscote Green’ (KEGG), which now has 371 members. The group also spoke to the committee leader of ‘Keep Rearsby Rural’ and was deeply encouraged by their advice and support following their own campaign in Rearsby. KEGG and Keep Rearsby Rural have offered to support each other wherever possible in their respective campaigns. Over a three-day period, and with the help of many Facebook group volunteers, leaflets were delivered to the residents of East Goscote and Rearsby. It wasn’t until 5th March that some brochures from Gladman were received by the residents of East Goscote (none were received in Rearsby, residents of Broome Lane or the central village). Due to the Facebook campaign there were approximately 200 residents at Gladman’s exhibition. Not one person who spoke to KEGG was in support of the proposed development. Lots of residents realised the need for housing across the country but felt that it was entirely inappropriate in the area, particularly taking account of recent past development in East Goscote, Syston, Queniborough and Barkby. At the exhibition, there were three Gladman representatives. None of the representatives took notes of the feedback from residents, they weren’t able to answer many of the questions asked, and couldn’t provide examples of where their past developments had been shaped by residents’ feedback. Also in attendance at the exhibition was Parish Councillor Sue Gerrard and County Councillor James Poland who were in full support of KEGG’s campaign and echoed the objections of the group. On Saturday 10th March, Councillor Sue Gerrard held a local surgery, with record numbers, at East Goscote village hall with Edward Argar MP. Edward Argar had done his research into the proposal and made it clear that KEGG would have his full support in opposing the plans. He made it clear that, although he had no influence in local planning matters, he completely understood the concerns of the local residents and would be writing to the Council with his objections as soon as the planning application was lodged. APRIL 2018
Huge amounts of work are now going on behind the scenes at KEGG to prepare material objections for when the planning application is submitted by Gladman. Although the Gladman exhibition was dressed up as a ‘consultation’, attendees were told that the proposal would be formally submitted to the Council within a month, a ‘done deal’ in effect. KEGG hopes to continue to welcome the fantastic support they have so far received from East Goscote residents, they couldn’t continue their campaign without their heart-warming support. KEGG believe that although the fight to protect the village may, at times, get tough, the community will prevail and these nonsensical plans will be refused. Rebecca Smith on behalf of KEGG
Give Our Birds an Eggcellent Easter Easter is a time when many gardeners’ like to tidy up and trim back, but this is the also when many birds start to build their nests and lay their first clutch of eggs. It only takes a moment to accidentally destroy a nest, so a few minutes carrying out some simple checks before starting any work could be the difference between life and death.
Writing For Wellbeing Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland are working with Beauty & Utility Arts to offer older Carers (60+) the opportunity for some valuable ‘ME’ time through their professionally-led, ‘Writing for Wellbeing Workshops’ at Charnwood Museum. It doesn’t matter if you have never considered writing before, just come along and have some fun and get creative with support from experienced tutor Katie Soar. This kind of creative writing can be good for your wellbeing and relaxation. It is for anyone of any writing ability. It is not about creating a finished product but using the process of writing, in a supported environment, as a way to calm the mind. All you need to do is commit to giving yourself two hours each week out of the 168 hours you often have to be available for caring! The Course lasts for four weeks and will be held every Wednesday in April from 10.30-12.30pm and Wednesday 2nd May at the same time. The venue is Charnwood Museum, Granby Street, Loughborough with parking nearby. Previous course participants have said: “I was taken out of my busy thoughts, and transported right into a memory, I feel relaxed and it hardly took a minute!" and “It was surprisingly easy to switch off from all that is expected of me at home. Now I look forward to coming and doing something just for me.” Places are limited to 10, so please book or have your queries answered by calling Jeanette Silver at Age UK Charnwood Office on 01509 260 327 or 0773 882 0997.

Garden favourites such as robins, sparrows and blackbirds are in decline and need all the help they can get, especially after a harsh winter, and they also help us by controlling aphids, caterpillars, snails, slugs and bugs. Neil Pilcher of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust said “We ask everyone to be careful and to quickly check for nests just before starting work. Dense hedges such as Leylandii are popular nesting sites, but any hedge, tree, shrub and even ivy could be home to a growing family. If not doing the work themselves, householders should ask their contractor to check for nests too. If in doubt, the work should be postponed until the end of August when the breeding season is over”. All birds are legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act whilst nesting, and protection starts the moment they begin building the nest until their young have fully fledged. Give our birds a boost this spring, a little extra care could make all the difference to our feathered friends.

Local Gymnast Isla On Sunday 11th February, Isla competed at the English Championships held in Ilford. After a long period of injury this was Isla’s first all round competition in 15 months.
Isla is still building up her routines, she came a very respectable 33 out of 68 with a small error on bars, a particular highlight was a stunning beam routine where she achieved 5th place. Isla also competed her new floor routine for the first time and gained 12th place. She is now back in the gym working hard to build and perfect her routines ready for the British Championships held at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. She has also been selected for the east Midlands Squad following a successful trial. A big thank to Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS) who have awarded Isla a ‘talented athlete grant’ for another year, and thank you to South Charnwood Leisure Centre who have given her 12 months Gym membership.
