idea of demonstrating the preparation of foods suitable for inclusion with three light meals served at various times of day. This was to be breakfast, lunch and a cream tea. The floral element was for volunteer members to create an appropriate flower arrangement to accompany each of those meals. Beginning with a breakfast tray, there was a cup of tea/coffee, along with a lightly baked waffle and butter. Another member made a beautiful hand tied posy of garden flowers and foliage, small enough to fit onto the tray. The colour theme was blue and pink, with carnations, lavender, sage, Roundhill Flower and bay leaves, choisya, and fatsia. 11th November 2018 Syston pays tribute to those who travelled by train from the station to serve their country in times of conflict

In the afternoon of Remembrance Day, a ceremony was held at Syston Station to honour those who used the station to travel as Forces members or civilians to serve our country in times of conflict. The Syston in Bloom Group, many of whom are ‘Station Adopters’, had arranged for a piece of Mountsorrel granite to be installed near the entrance to the platform. An appropriately engraved plaque was attached and the surrounding area was

Barkley, representing Syston Town Council, Donna Adams from East Midlands Trains, Mike Stevens from Tarmac, Major Peter Dalton, Capt. Hedley Midgley and Sgt Vince Smith representing the armed forces, and Rev Tony Pick. Howard Midgley welcomed everyone and explained the purpose of the memorial and its’ dedication. Trevor Hodson paid tribute to Tarmac, De Montfort Memorials, East Midlands Trains, and Oasis Garden Centre, all of whom made this project possible through their kind generosity. Maurice Bent spoke about the civilians who

used the station and Peter Dalton described how members of all the armed forces relied on the station. He then introduced a two-minute silence to remember all those involved in conflict. The plaque was then unveiled by Derek Cox and Hedley Midgley, as examples of older and younger generations of those who had travelled from Syston to serve their country. SYSTON TOWN NEWS

To cater for the next generation of golfers seeking a different experience to the more traditional nature of golf club membership, Birstall Golf Club have launched a flexible membership scheme. Confirming this significant addition to the range of membership available at Birstall club Chairman Robin Francis commented “The world of golf as we know it is clearly changing. England Golf figures confirm the number of casual golfers in the UK is now approximately double that of the traditional full subscription member. This reflects the more flexible society we now live in. Younger players with family commitments and financial considerations such as mortgage payments do not necessarily have the time or money to justify full golf membership. However they wish to continue to play golf at a time and at a price that fits with their other commitments.” Birstall is now launching a flexible membership scheme which for a fee of £325 allows the member to play up to 30 rounds a year, gain a handicap and participate in a limited number of competitions as well as enjoying full house membership. Francis further commented “For flexible members booking has to be done on line and this type of membership allows us to make better use of our excellent course at quiet times. The scheme offers a pathway to full membership and reflects the reality of golf in 2018. With England Golf confirming 80% of golf clubs now offer on-line booking we are confident this more flexible approach will provide us with the necessary numbers to achieve an appropriate balance between flexible members using the course at quieter times and full subscription members seeking the total golf experience.” The initial pilot exercise will limit flexible membership numbers to 40 and full information on the scheme can be obtained by telephoning Club Manager Jo Shepherd on 0116 267 4322 or by visiting the club’s website on www.birstallgolfclub.co.uk DEC 18/JAN 19

This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”. During November I stopped my car in Walkers Way to admire our native silver birches which many years ago had been planted. One tree in particular fascinated me, this had been planted against the block of flats on the right hand side of the road and this had almost 10 feet (3m) long weeping branches. From my school days I cannot recall whether, due to its long tresses, it was Wordsworth, or Tennyson who calls our native birch the lady of the woods. Our native silver birch will form a tree over 40 feet (12m) in height. However, Betula pendula ‘Youngi’ will form a low growing weeping tree some seven/eight feet (2.1/2.4m) in height, but even so be careful where you plant it as it will form an umbrella shape almost 10 feet (3m) in diameter. In the past I have had to send out landscaping teams to dig out weeping birches and low growing weeping cherries that had been planted too close to a garden path, or house driveway. In many cases the house owner had lopped off the branches that obstructed the path, or drive, giving the trees a lop sided appearance. Here I had better point out the birches need to

be pruned between November and the following February. If pruned during the growing season the wounds will bleed sap and this not only attracts wasps and other insects which feed on its sugary sap, but the sap will also attract fungus spores and these cause the sap to turn black. As the deciduous trees and shrubs lose their leaves it is the evergreens we depend on to not only give us structure in the garden, but also their leaves which are often variegated to help lighten the drabness of winter. Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’, pictured below left, is, in my opinion the finest of all golden leaved shrubs. I have a plant in my garden that is now four feet (1.2m) tall by eight feet (2.4m)in diameter and its large, glossy golden leaves brighten the area outside my kitchen window. ‘Sundance’ also has masses of small fragrant flowers during May giving it the common name of ‘Mexican Orange Blossom’. I have three different varieties of Abelia x grandiflora in my garden and these lovely evergreens produce their flowers during late summer, in fact if the weather is good they can still be in flower on Christmas day. Recently while on a visit to Goscote Nurseries I came across another Abelia named ‘Lady Peach’ and as this has peach variegated foliage. Vi said we must have this in the garden, but it still sits in its pot awaiting a space in a border. I grow three different forms of Pittosporum tennuifolium, which being native to New Zealand I thought might be a little tender, but they have survived 20 years of inclement weather. ‘Silver Queen’ is the tallest of these being eight feet (2.4m) tall, but I keep

this clipped to form a three feet (90cm) column. ‘Tom Thumb’ as its name suggests is a low growing shrub, which in 20 years only attained two and a half feet (75cm) in height. ‘Tom Thumb’ needs a light background as at the onset of winter its green leaves turn an unusual purple-black. All of my Pittosporum’s have small, fragrant dark crimson flowers during May. If you have a dry soil in full sun then look for Cistus ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ as this will form a two feet (60cm) mound of bright yellow leaves and although it becomes massed with single flowers during early summer, the flowers are white and give little contrast with the foliage. There are a number of evergreens which not only make excellent specimen shrubs, but are also ideal to create hedges. Eleagnus x ebbingei ‘Gilt Edge’ has large gold edged leaves and small silver very fragrant flowers during November. For those who say they have seen a Snowdrop in flower out of season, I have a clump in my garden that always flowers in November and it is called Galanthus reginae-olgae. May I finish by thanking all of the Syston in Bloom committee for the work they have carried out in the borders at Syston station. The memorial they have created to all who left the station to serve their country during times of need can be seen by all who now use the station. My very best wishes for Christmas and a prosperous new year in the garden.

is truly my best friend, pictured below with Christine and myself. We visit each other once or twice a year. My partner Sue and I came up Guy Fawkes weekend. It is a great feeling to be greeted as one of the family, and to be called ‘Uncle Mick’ by the children and grandchildren. Syston’s Remembrance Cauda Equina UK Charity Remembers.... Exhibition, Our remembrance window this year is full of memorabilia from WW1, WW2 and more recent conflicts. We have lots of items relating to these from books and wartime music CDs. We have ration books for food and a motor fuel ration book on display. Our window has the story of three Syston WW2 soldiers. Cyril Cunnington, James (Bill) Bevins and Douglas Kemp. Each poster contains a short bio of each soldier and a photograph. Victoria and Jackie enjoyed putting together the remembrance window in the Town Square. Victoria is a member of the COFEPOW (Children of Far East Prisoner of War Assocation) of which Sir Terry Waite is a patron and has visited a lot of battlefields from both WW1 and WW2 in France and Belgium.

The Committee of The Friends of St Peter and St Paul’s Church would like to thank all those who contributed to the Remembrance Exhibition held in the church over the 10th and 11th November. This is a very large number of people! From shopkeepers who put posters up, to people who lent artifacts for the displays; from people who willingly shared their family stories or research; to the musicians who sang, played the trumpet or rang the church bells; not forgetting the

Congratulations! It’s excellent - a fitting tribute to those Syston men who died during World War One, as well as very informative about a whole range of other aspects. I really enjoyed it and hope you feel it was well worth all your hard work.’ Felicity Austin, (On behalf of the Friends of St Peter and St Paul’s Church).

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News Ladies Friendship Circle The meeting on 22nd October was our Harvest Festival. The tables were decorated with flower arrangements in autumn colours and there were matching table napkins. There was a choice of vegetable or Stilton and broccoli soup with bread and butter. This was followed with a selection of cakes and chocolate biscuits with tea or coffee to follow. The flower arrangements and cakes had been provided by members of the group and were greatly admitted and appreciated by everyone. It was a friendly and relaxing evening as we look forward to the coming Autumnal days. St. Peter and St. Paul’s Ladies Friendship Circle The title of the talk at our meeting on Monday 12th November by Ruth Coward was ‘Ark at Our Peter’ and we all wondered what this could be about. As it turned out it was the early life of a Loughborough lad. Born in the 1930s and one of ten children, he lived in a poor part of town. The day he was born his mother was in the middle of sweeping the chimney and whilst she was doing that the brush got stuck and she went into labour. At school he was not very enamoured with learning although in later life he confessed to liking some of the more academic subjects. He was more interested in amusing his fellow class mates which did not endear him to the teachers. He left school at fourteen years of age and went to work cutting patterns in a upholstery business.

One of his interests from an early age was transport. At first it was an old cycle, later a motorised bike. A trip to Skegness with some mates became a real adventure when the bike ‘packed up’ and he had to resort to pedal power. He got to Skegness but it was three in the morning before he got home! His next mode of transport was a moped to be followed by various cars. He was called to do his national service where he gained knowledge of car engines. After leaving the army he married a local girl and went back into the furniture business. This led him to owning a well known high class furniture business in the town. Several ladies remembered the shop and also his family–some had even bought items from the shop. At this point our speaker ended her very amusing talk and offered to return to tell us more about this successful lad who came from very humble beginnings. We look forward to that visit, hopefully sometime in the New Year. Doreen Payne Coffee Morning A recent coffee morning was held by the members of the Ladies Friendship Group. There were some stalls including bric a brac, gifts, bags and cards, a raffle and, of course, a table full of delicious home made cakes. This event raised £250 towards this year’s charity The Air Ambulance. Traditional Christmas Fair Members of the congregation are busy preparing for this event on 8th December at 10.00am till 2.00pm.

saw Syston Bowls Club filled with Syston players and associates, past and present, for what’s been variously termed a ‘reunion’, ‘get-together’ or just ‘a bit of a do’. Those who know the band will be aware that its claim to be a friendly and sociable group is no idle boast; no matter what it was called you can be sure a jolly good time was had by all.

The first Saturday of November saw a group of Syston Band players begin the afternoon playing in Loughborough Marketplace for the start of the town’s week-long Armistice celebrations, before dashing down the A6 to join the rest of the band at Syston’s Brookside Club for an open rehearsal and recruitment event. The Brookside Club (Syston Working Men’s Club) was once the home of Syston Band and it was a pleasure to play there again. There was an appreciative audience and a fun programme of music, followed by free pizza and a small libation - and the prospect of a couple new players. What’s not to like? Syston’s Remembrance Day What an amazing turn out to this years parade! It was an honour for residents from our Twinned Town Deville les Rouen to be present and for the President of their twinning association; Mrs Maud Mangane to read out some of the fallen from WW1. In the parade the scout and guide band led the way with the standards behind, followed by The Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire; Richard Brucciani with his wife Sheila walking with Maud and Fiona Henry Chair of Syston Twinning. Behind was Annie Boutin representing the Mayor of Deville les Rouen with Cllr Paul Henry; Chairman of Syston Town Council, Edward Argar MP and Phil Waldron, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Branch. These were followed by members of the twinning associations, councillors, uniformed services. Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows. Aspiro Needs Funds Local not for profit organisation: Aspiro, needs funds to help another 1000 local residents A local not for profit social enterprise, Aspiro, has helped 1,000 local people, across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, who have experienced mental health difficulties, towards finding a paid job, voluntary work or to access learning. Aspiro needs to find just £10,000 to survive and continue this service, as they have made a loss recently and want to really help another 1,000 local residents. Aspiro’s founder Peter Smith, exhomeless and street drinker, with his own history of mental health problems, set up Aspiro seven and a half years ago and says: “After all the hard work myself and my team has put into making Aspiro a success and helping so many residents, including young adults, people recovering from substance misuse, as well as providing the mental health employment service, it will be a disaster for local residents, businesses who employ our customers and my team, if we have to close”. U3A Third Birthday Celebrated A capacity, all-ticket audience of 150 Members celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the founding of Syston and District U3A at a special social event held at Beedles Lake Golf Club on Wednesday 14th November. Normally, on the morning of the second Wednesday of each month, the U3A holds an open General Meeting, with speaker, in the Malthouse Suite of the Syston Conservative Club. On this occasion, however, Members were given the opportunity to socialise and mingle, to make new contacts and new friends in a relaxed and informal gathering. Chairman of Syston Town Council, Councillor Paul Henry and Town Manager Catherine Voyce were guests of honour. Before lunch was served, the audience were treated to short but impressive performances by the Ukulele (see picture above right), Singing and Line Dancing Groups currently active within the U3A. Chairman of the U3A Executive Committee, Colin Grimes, says: “The past three years have been

something of a roller-coaster ride as we have struggled to meet the staggeringly positive response to the launch of the U3A to serve the communities of Syston and surrounding areas. We are obviously meeting a real need within our communities for continued mental and physical challenges throughout our ‘Third Age’ – i.e. following retirement from full time employment. We already have over 400 registered Members and close to 50 active Groups offering a wide range of social, educational and cultural stimulation. Fortunately, from the outset, we have had the benefit of an energetic, committed and skilled group of people to serve on the Executive Committee, to help to drive the organisation forward and to identify and recruit volunteer leaders to administer the

wide range of Groups that our Members have requested. We remain very much open for business and offer a very warm welcome to new Members.” Anyone interested in joining should contact Norma Tel: 0116 260 8412; email: u3abiz@btinternet.com. Full details of the organisation, including the up to date list of currently active Groups can be found on our web site at www.u3asites.org.uk/syston Syston Town News Syston’s Only Dedicated Newspaper

From 2020, it will be 66 for men and the last century and early 21st century, is the rapid increase in lifespans. Retirement women, increasing to 67 between 2026 and 2028, and then linked to life is, for many, now a long journey to look forward to; not, as it once was, a relatively expectancy after that. The Office for Budget Responsibility has warned that short time between stopping work and many of those who are working today death. Yet, at a time when so much about ageing might not be eligible for a State Pension until they are 70. is improving, there is a cloud being cast: worry about whether our savings will last. The current State Pension system has Today, a 65-year-old man in the UK has changed enormously since its inception in on average another 18.5 years of life 1909, and will do so for many more years ahead of him (up from just 13 years in the to come. average, Britons believe that a pot of £233,000 will be enough for their desired retirement income of £26,000 a year. But research suggests that they need to save at least £525,000 for this income, even including the State Pension (BlackRock, Investor Pulse Survey, 2017). Given increasing life expectancy, it’s imperative that we save more to help fund a comfortable old age. Nevertheless, more than half of people in the UK either aren’t saving at all for their retirement, or they aren’t saving nearly enough to give them the standard of living they hope for (Money Advice Service, 2018). If you fall into either of these categories you have three choices: adjust your income expectations, start saving more, or retire later. 4. It Can Be Hard to Catch up A common mistake is to try to play catchup later on in life. This is because the longer you delay saving, the less time you have to benefit from investment growth. Because compounding can enhance the value of your savings, the discomfort of each pound you save now can be greatly outweighed by the advantages you gain later. Knowing you'll be all set to meet your basic needs – with enough left over to let you comfortably do the things you look forward to in retirement – is something well worth striving for. Moreover, it will give you far more freedom and control over your lifestyle down the road.

5. The Burden of Saving Has Shifted In the face of rising life expectancy and spiralling costs, the trend has been for employers to wind up their defined benefit (final salary) schemes in favour of their less costly, and in many cases, less favourable defined contribution counterparts. This has shifted more of the burden of saving from employers to employees, meaning that the majority of today's workers are now solely responsible for making their own financial provision for retirement. Many experts warn that the end of defined benefit pension schemes, chronic underfunding of defined contribution pensions, and increasing life expectancy are creating a perfect storm that threatens to destabilise the financial wellbeing of millions of future retirees. The message is clear: a comfortable retirement can only be assured if we take steps to save enough money – and in the most suitable saving schemes. Syston Youth Café Volunteers Required On a Friday night in July 2015 the Youth Café at the Hub opened for the first time. This was the end result of a three year project when volunteers from Syston Methodist Church engaged with young people hanging around public areas, even in bad weather, to understand what motivated them to congregate in parks and car parks. The consultation identified that whilst there are several uniformed organisations, sports clubs and other structured groups, there was a lack of a less structured safe space for young people to congregate and engage in positive behaviour activity. In addition, they engaged with local residents about their concerns and raised the funds needed to create a bespoke Community and Youth Café for the town. Syston Methodist Church, with the backing of Syston Town Council, developed a purpose built community and youth facility within the town centre. The priority was to respond to youth related anti-social behaviour by opening the Youth Café element of the Community Hub, which is staffed by Go-Getta CIC, volunteers from the church and wider community help staff the facility. The Syston Youth Café is part of Syston Methodist Church outreach into the local community. It aims to provide young people a safe place to go to be with their

peer group. It provides a space with trained adult youth workers and volunteers. During the three years since the Youth Café opened there has been almost 300 young people registered and there is a regular attendance of approximately 20 young people each Friday. Staff deliver youth work activities, issue based workshops and group work from this base. The bank of volunteers who are committed to this project receive training from Go-Getta CIC to support them to build confidence in working with young people, give them skills to work with challenging behaviours and build positive relationships in the long term. During the last year, Go-Getta CIC has delivered youth work interventions. Our activities include arts and crafts, team games and cooking. Staff and volunteers have worked intensively to nurture trust with these children, young people and their families. Since our involvement, AntiSocial Behaviour (ASB) within Syston has significantly reduced. Earlier this year, the Youth Café opened an additional evening on Thursdays with the purpose of providing a facility for the older young person to discuss any issue affecting them personally such as mental health and stress, relationship issues, or problems at school or home. The café sells a range of hot and cold drinks and sweet or savoury snacks and one of the volunteer roles is to serve in the cafeteria. Continues on page 36

A cross-party working group to provide advice, challenge and feedback on proposals and next steps was being set up and was due to feedback to cabinet next spring. On the 3rd November, Bea travelled to Guildford for the British National Age Group Finals, her major competition for this season, where she competed against the best gymnasts in her age group from across Great Britain. Bea showed great determination and finished the competition placing top 10 on each apparatus, bars, beam, floor and vault - notably coming

Youngsters Enjoy Matchday at Welford Road

Falcon’s Remembrance Weekend Match

The Riverside Falcons played Syston Town Juniors on Remembrance Sunday and as usual they held a minute’s silence before the game and the Captain, Zack Goodyer, placed a wreath at the memorial afterwards. The result didn’t go the Falcon’s way but the match was played with an attitude akin to days gone by. Pictures above and right courtesy of the club.

Young players from Syston Rugby Club shared matchday with Leicester Tigers on Saturday 3rd November as they made up the Guard of Honour to welcome the teams at Welford Road. Tigers hosted Worcester Warriors in the Premiership Rugby Cup as the Syston group had the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of legends on the Welford Road pitch in front of a 17,815-strong crowd. Guard of Honour groups fly the flag in the moments building up to kick-off and welcome both teams on to the pitch in front of a roar from the crowd. No one in the stadium gets as close to taking a pass, making a tackle or catching a high ball.

Tony Clapham, accompanied the Syston team and said: “It’s the first time the kids we’ve brought along today have taken part in the Guard of Honour at Welford Road but we usually aim to come down each season with different age groups to take part in the matchday coaching clinics, training with Tigers, and it’s a great inspiration to the team.”
