Our planned dates and areas to be visited are as follows:

Santa will do his best to be out on his sleigh on the above dates unless the weather is just too wet or the roads are icy and slippery.

After business matters had been dealt with and Jerusalem sung, it was a very crafty session as Carolyn Boulder, speaker for the evening, demonstrated how to make a patchwork Christmas tree. At a nominal cost for materials, each member had a pack of ten circles, already tacked. There were two of every size and the tacking had to be drawn together to make flat discs. When these had been completed they were threaded onto a skewer which fitted into a small jar. This formed the base and then, hey presto! Little sticky-backed stars to fit on the top. Now, everyone who created one was pleased with their efforts and makes one think of the Christmas season. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs K. Fryman. The competition for a patchwork item was won by Mrs V. Cobb with a skirt and waistcoat, made by a speaker from some time ago.

Feeling the Squeeze The Bank of Mum and Dad continues to play a major role in the housing market, but thousands of over-55s are feeling financially vulnerable as a result. Parents and grandparents across the UK are digging deep into their pension pots to support loved ones, balancing the ambitions of young relatives with their own retirement goals. Consequently, over a quarter of those aged between 55 and 64 are accepting a lower standard of living, according to a new study by Legal & General and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (The research was compiled using original survey data as well as existing data sources relating to transaction levels. The survey work was carried out by YouGov and Censuswide. For the borrowers the total sample size was 1,002 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 5th - 11th April 2018. For the lenders, total sample size was 2,010 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 22nd February – 6th March 2018). The study shows that more than 50,000 property transactions this year will be funded by parents cashing in their pension pots to provide a lump sum for a deposit, and nearly 23,000 supported by retirees using their annuity income. The Bank of Mum and Dad is even using equity release to help the housing needs of younger family members. Nearly 44,000 housing transactions have been partly or wholly supported by equity release this year, while a fifth of parents lending cash for their kids’ deposit have downsized their own home to do it. The Bank of Mum and Dad is expected to be the equivalent of a £5.7 billion mortgage lender this year, responsible for more than one in four UK housing transactions. The study found that one in ten parents and grandparents said they felt less financially secure as a result of providing financial assistance to loved ones, and 4% have actually postponed their retirement

IAN DAVISON

so that they are able to fund the loans. Worryingly, the research also found that more than three-quarters did not speak to a professional adviser or even seek information online before offering help. “This generation is helping family or friends onto the housing ladder, but they don’t necessarily have the wealth to do so without impacting their own retirement plans, and they should get advice to make sure this won’t leave them short of funds,” says Chris Knight, CEO, Legal & General Retail Retirement. “It means getting people thinking about retirement income earlier, helping them build their retirement plan and laying out all the options available to them. If we can do this, we can help people to be this generous without leaving themselves short – helping their family onto the property ladder, but also ensuring they have the best retirement they can,” says Knight. Helping Hands While dipping into your savings may seem tempting, there are other ways to help a child onto the housing ladder. For instance, relatives may be able to apply for a joint mortgage with a child, or ring-fence invested capital in an account which can help to reduce the child’s monthly mortgage repayments. As such, benefactors can stay invested and continue to plan for their own future, while providing mortgage assistance to their young relative. Property wealth has the potential to be a transformative force for so many young people. But with so many pitfalls to avoid and finer tax issues to consider, it’s always a good idea to take financial advice. That way, you can ensure that you can help loved ones without putting your own financial security and retirement comfort at risk. Local Police Beat Team Crime Prevention Advice: Avoiding Scams: Scams exist in many forms. Whether it is high pressure sales at your door or emails pretending to be your bank requesting your bank details. There are far too many different forms of scams to fit in one small article. With any online, email or mail scam you will have time to ask for help or to look it up online and I would suggest you take your time and check the UK Police scam website www.actionfraud.police.uk where you can find tips to identify and report scams. One type of scam that is going around our area at the moment is tradesmen knocking on doors, normally doors of the elderly or vulnerable and employing high pressure tactics in order to obtain cash or bank details. Norman Hastings: Memories of an 8 Year Old Choirboy I think that of all the services I took part in, the one I always found most moving, the one I loved best, was the Armistice Day Sunday. Several of the choirmen were ex-servicemen from the Great War. I think one had lost a leg and another was on sticks as a result of his wounds. It was on this day that those in the congregation who’d served during that first holocaust proudly wore their medals, polished and burnished, shining and clinking as they moved. What a pageant of sight and sound and colour as behind the flags and banners they walked to lay them upon the altar to be blessed. Widows and mothers could be seen wearing medals and Orders awarded to men who’d never lived to wear them; kept in drawers all year through and brought out, polished and wept over, as memories returned of what might have been. The whole nation wept for its dead. They were in the majority; they would never have the peace of mind knowing where their loved one was buried. So many like Our Mam’s eldest brother who was blown to pieces. On the positive side, so much grief and pride was generated that even we little boys in the choir stood stiffly to attention like guardsmen, as at the end of the two minute silence signalled by a distant gun or Maroon on a nearby park, the trumpeter, strategically placed within the church, sobbed out the heartbreak of the Last Post. Standing there, trying to keep my gaze forward, I would nevertheless allow my side vision to present to me a picture of the whole church, ablaze with the predominately red poppies, the flags and the standards. I would then see, as though through a dark glass, the strained and haggard faces of the medal bedecked exservicemen, many missing arms and legs, some with some of their faces masked off with pieces of felt to hide the horror underneath. I would see the tears coursing down so many faces; tears with which my own contributed. The nation grieved, and I was proud to grieve too. Little did we know that within three years or less the carnage of war would recommence. In those days the build up to 11.00am was palpable. In schools and colleges bells would be set ringing, calling the classes to a central hall. In the factories, the workers would set their eyes to the clock. Those with medals had them close to hand. Cubs, Guides, Scouts and Brownie uniforms were decorated with red poppies. As the hands of the clock moved inexorably towards the hour, the processions formed up ready to move off after the two minutes’ silence. Beautifully groomed horses, brushed until their coats shone, tossed their heads restlessly and champed at the bit, pawing at the ground whilst harnesses creaking leather against leather shone as NOVEMBER 2018

those on the battlefield horses never shone. Did Christ on His Cross suffer as did they whose names were scribed on those all too familiar War Memorials up and down the country suffer? With the deepest respect, I doubt it. Here a man, there a woman, even children overcome with the build-up of tension and emotion fell, fainting stiffly down, as so many others had fallen into eternity at Ypres, Passchendaele and on the Somme. There, a woman, a mother, broke down and wept unashamedly as realisation, yet again, reminded her that medals and certificates from an alleged grateful nation can never fill an empty chair. Is it time? Not yet; nearly. The towns, villages and Hamlets held their breath. Men going about their business in the streets took out watches, held them to the ear, shook them; others took out medal clasps and pinned them on selfconsciously. Some looked for clocks on public buildings or called, ‘what’s the time, mate?’ House doors opened as men, women (some with a baby in their arms) came to stand half in, half out of the door, many shedding the first tears. Those streets that had wayside shrines screwed to a wall, shrines that bore those names of the fallen from that street which were lovingly cared for, each had a shelf upon which most days of the year could be found a small meat paste or similar receptacle into which a few posies or wild flowers were placed. These have now been taken down and lost although one of the original shrines, circa 1914, can be found at the church at Queniborough. These shrines became a gathering point as neighbours called back to mind a familiar face of but a few years ago. Now, with only seconds left to the eleventh hour, tramcars and buses just stopped, even if by doing so a road or turn was blocked, for it mattered not; everything else was at a standstill. A dull ‘crump’ a quick siren blast, a field gun discharged. A clock would begin to chime the hour. Gentlemen had already removed their hats; tram and bus drivers and passengers had already left the vehicle and stood in silence. Caught up in the emotion, some men forgot to remove their hat and, if witnessed, someone else, a complete stranger, would snatch the hat from the offender’s head and throw it to the floor knowing this was one time retribution would not follow. That silence, lasting for the two prescribed minutes, was emotionally terrible. I can think of no other way to describe it. I swear even birds stopped singing. As the world stood still, those who’d been sacrificed were remembered. Not a man was forgotten. Those two minutes lasted into eternity. Finally, the Maroons sounded again. Hats were replaced; buses and trams moved off; the crowds dispersed. For those two minutes the dead came back to life. They were paraded before us

as we saluted them and then they went back to wherever they’d been before we called them. I was to read much later on that the number plate of the car in which the Archduke Franz Joseph and his Morganic wife were travelling when they were assassinated in Sarajevo was 11.11.18! The hour, the month and even the year that terrible war ended. The Easy Way to the perfect... Fitted Bedrooms | Fitted Kitchens | Fitted Offices

Charnwood WIgs has one meeting for 2018 left, Thursday 29th November, with Julie Ede Introducing ‘Edith Piaf’ (not Eva Peron as previously advertised, apologies). Things don’t usually go wrong, but in September we were looking forward to making bangles and ended up with a wonderful talk on mother of pearl! George Hook has continued his family tradition handed down from generations in the Birmingham button trade, making an array of items from cutlery handles, belt loops, buttons, jewellery, scarf rings and spoons. The talk was amazing, interesting and funny. The skill of making buttons has slowly died out since the introduction of PLASTIC. When George retires the business will close which seems very sad because the product is so beautiful and the skill will be lost. The different colours of the shells were stunning and so tactile. Next time I see an oyster shell I will look at it in a different light. If you would like to visit us and see if our women’s institute is for you, we would be pleased to welcome you. We meet at Beedles Lake Golf Club, East Goscote, LE7 3WQ. 7.30pm to 10.00pm. Guests £4. For more information please contact Sharon Astill on 0784 988 8752.

balancing the immune system so that it works efficiently. This means that you are less likely to catch colds, and may be less prone to allergies.

Help Your Immune System

As winter approaches and the coughs, cold and flu symptoms appear, now is the time to build up your immune system! As always please seek medical advice before taking any herbal remedies if you have any condition which is of concern. There are a lot of remedies to assist the immune system - In this article we are going to focus on: Echinacea, Elderberry, Plantago and Zinc. Echinacea (echinacea augusfi Folia, echinacea purpurea). Echinacea's active compounds enhance immune function due to various mechanisms of action such as; increasing the production of white blood cells (when they are low); stimulating activation of white blood cells and boosting the production of various immune-potentiating compounds. It is considered to be the prime remedy for the immune system. Echinacea works by

It is best taken in a maintenance dose over a period of time to improve immune function. Although it appears that echinacea is most effective taken at the onset of an infection, if the herb is to be used long-term many experts suggest that a one to two week break be taken every eight weeks or so. Also, those suffering from leukaemia or HIV should consult a doctor before using Echinacea. Do not take if you are taking immunosuppressant medication or if you are hypersensitive to Echinacea preparations. Elderberry (sambucus nigra). It has been noted that plantain juice will not go mouldy during storage despite large amounts of sugar. This is due to the presence of naturally occurring antibiotics. This may explain its action in conditions such as middle ear infections and glue ear. If earache persists for more than five days, it is advisable to consult a Doctor.

Zinc is an important immune nutrient. The lozenge form of zinc has been shown to significantly reduce the duration and severity of common cold symptoms. When Black elderberries contain large quantities dissolved in the mouth, the zinc appears of flavonoid and anthocyan glycosides, to possess a direct, local anti-viral activity. plus essential oils, vitamin C, B complex Zinc is a primary nutrient in immune and minerals. Tutor Doctor - Secret to Successful Studying How each unique child reaches his/her full academic potential is something every parent is yearning to know, and it’s all about studying in style. Children learn in many ways, like seeing, hearing and experiencing things first hand. Here are two different ways you can identify your child's learning style: ● Paper Airplane Activity: For the first attempt at making the paper airplane, verbal directions are read to the child. For the second attempt, visual and written directions are given. For the third attempt, the instructor demonstrates each step while the child folds his/her paper airplane. Which one was the child most successful with? ● Learning Style Memory Exercise: This activity is best for a group of children. Choose 15 items that can be seen, heard and touched. Children pass them in a row and have the opportunity to look, feel and hear the items. When all of the items are returned to the box, ask them to recall the items. Then discuss the results: What helped them to remember the items: by touch? Sight? Sound? Now the child can learn how to study and memorise most efficiently for their preferred

learning style. Here are some tips for each style: Visual Learners: • Take notes. • Organise work, rewrite and reorganise; make outlines and lists. • Draw out pictures, mind-maps, flow diagrams and time-lines. • Study in a private place with no visual distractions. • Use flashcards; colour code words; use highlighters; circle words; underline. Auditory Learners: • Use word associations and songs. • Record lectures and classes to play back • Watch and listen to videos. • Repeat facts over and over with eyes closed. • Participate in class discussions / study groups. • Tape notes after writing them. Kinaesthetic Learners: • Study in short blocks. • Keep body active while studying • Study and role play with others. • Play memory games.

We begin life with our first breath. We end life with our last. All the conscious breaths in between can be used as a way to monitor how we are and we can use them to bring a sense of balance into our lives. Often when we are stressed we rely on the mind chatter to find a solution, rushing here and there trying to grasp at things that might make us feel better. The answers to our imbalances are often not found in the mind chatter, it's in the nervous system (where we feel stressed). We access the nervous system through the breath. With yoga and mindfulness, the breath is what leads the practice. In turn, calming the nervous system and making us feel better. It’s really that simple. Take a moment now to check in with your breath. How does it feel? Shallow breathing causes stress and anxiety. To combat this take deeper (not too deep), slower breaths. This will bring more oxygen into your system allowing the body to relax. Benefits of working with the breath over the mind are: 1) Calms the nervous system 2) Improves heart health 3) Improves mental, emotional and physical health 4) We become more resilient to life’s challenges 5) We feel grounded What can you do today to bring more breath awareness into your life? If you suffer from anxiety ask a loved one to remind you to slow the breathing down at the times when you can’t find the breath.

The event, a cheese and wine party, will be held in the Brookside Suite of the Community Centre on Friday 16th November starting at 7.30 p.m. Current Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Derek Burdon, says: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to recognise and express our thanks to the impressively long list of people who have played a part in the development of the Centre over the past forty years. We have done our best to identify and contact those involved over the years. Lest We Forget - Scouts in World War One This month sees the 100th year since the end of the First World War. But as we stand in silence on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, in the 11th month, around the war memorial, marking our respects to the service men and women who put their lives on the line for ours, Syston Scouts will also remember their fellow scout members who also gave up there time to help their country and provide a much needed service.

The role of Scouts in WW1. Although the Scouting movement had only been in existence for 6 years at the start of the war, the Baden Powell Boy Scouts were recognised as a Government ‘non-combatant service’ and thus scouts were asked to undertake a variety of jobs during the war, some of which are described below. Locally, as soon as war was declared, the Chief Commissioner for Leicestershire was requested to mobilise one thousand Boy Scouts who were to be placed at the disposal of the Government. During the first six weeks of the war Leicestershire Boy Scouts patrolled the Knighton Tunnel and Viaduct on the Midland Railway. Scouts were often on duty at recruitment offices where their role was to run back to the barracks with enlistment papers. During 1915 to 1917, three hundred Leicestershire Scouts were employed on ‘look out’ duty at various patrolling stations on the east coast; some Syston Scouts took part in this work. A very brief history of Syston Scout troop. The Scout movement was officially launched in January 1908, and Syston registered in February that year, becoming the first official troop in Leicestershire, and the second in the whole country. Very soon after this, a drum and fife band was started in Syston, which was the first Scout Band in the Kingdom. The troop was well established with a wide 22

SYSTON TOWN NEWS

variety of yearly events being held by the time that World War One was declared. There is not a complete record of the troop’s activities during the war years, but a report dated December 1915 has survived, and gives a fascinating insight into what the local troop did during 1914 and 1915. (Sentences in italics (below) are quotes from this report). Syston Scouts in World War One. The report starts with a description of the troop’s camping trip to Bridlington in 1914. The troop had no sooner pitched their tents when war was declared, and a few days later they received (by post) the Chief Scout’s call for scouts to volunteer to help the government, followed by a letter asking them to return home. In actual fact they were not allocated duties immediately, but all of the members of the troop sent in their names as volunteers for when their services were required.

After this, ‘the Chief Scout put the present system of Scouts Defence Corps into going order. Sixteen of the Systons took it up with such keenness that very soon they were proficient in drill, and also skilled shots’. The record then goes on to describe an inspection of the Leicester Association Defence Corps the following spring when Syston scouts were praised for their Ambulance work, followed by a description of another camp soon after; --‘During Whitsuntide holidays we held what might be termed an exceptional record camp. The whole of the troop spent the weekend under canvas. The camp had originally been intended for Defence Corps only, and on this account was conducted on Military lines. The troop was split up into sections, and each section took its turn at guard duty. During the whole time the tents were standing a guard was kept day and night. On Monday www.systontownnews.co.uk

Major Coates and the Assistant District Commissioner visited and inspected the camp. The Defence Corps was examined in Ambulance, Signalling, Drill and Pioneering. Each section had the highest praise from the inspecting officers.’ The report also describes other things that the Syston troop and its band did during those early years of the war; they assisted at many recruiting meetings held in the village and provided a band for route marches of the Leicester Volunteer Training Corps. That year the troop camped inland near Nuneaton, as camping at the coast was not allowed. Shortly after they returned to Syston the Defence Corps was inspected again by Major Coates, who watched the scouts demonstrate their shooting and drilling skills, and the signalling sections exchanging messages. The official report to headquarters read; ‘The Syston Troop are smart in appearance and are very proficient in both Defence Corps and Scout work.’ On Saturday 11th September the troop paraded to Barkby Hall for inspection by Mr V. R. Pochin, (Acting Commissioner for the local Association). ‘The troop built a bridge across the stream with scout poles which bore the weight of 15 scouts. The Commissioner then examined a number of scouts for their signallers Badge and passed six of them. Drill was the next item, after which Mr. Pochin distributed 11 War Service Badges to the scouts for Voluntary War Service.’

The report concludes with up-to-date news about how old Scouts were serving in the forces. It was written by Mr. Henry Moore, who was Scoutmaster from 1912. At some time after December 1915, Mr. Moore joined the Leicestershire Regiment and became a machine gunner. He was wounded and invalided out. NOVEMBER 2018

After recuperating, he returned to Syston and continued to lead the troop until 1958. He died in 1982. Mr Moore’s report paints a vivid picture of what Syston’s scout troop did during the early years of the war. All around the country Scout troops were undertaking various types of war work. Scouts still believe today as they did 100 years ago in preparing young people with skills for life, we encourage our young people to do more, learn more and be more. Each week, we give young

people the opportunity to have fun and adventure while developing the skills they need to succeed. We’re talking about teamwork, leadership and resilience, all of which played their roles over 100 years ago in Syston and help shape the community today. We believe in bringing people together. We celebrate diversity and stand against intolerance, always. We’re part of a worldwide movement, creating stronger communities and inspiring a positive future. If you would like to volunteer, or have your son or daughter join the adventure Please contact Chris Bodycot on 0788 4245 089 or email: GSL@systonscouts.org.uk Syston Scout Group is open to girls and boys aged from 6 years upwards. Band Open Evening 14th November, 7.00pm to 9.00pm @ Syston Scout Hall, Oxford Street.

A fuller version of this report can be found at the World War One Remembrance display in Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Upper Church Street, Syston. The display will be open all day on Saturday 10th November from 10.30am to 5.00pm and in the afternoon of Remembrance Day (11th) from 1.30pmuntil 4.30pm. Roundhill Flower and Garden Club Our demonstrator for September was David Wright, from Tunstead, Norwich. His work had the title 'It's an Education – War Horse'. This seemed a rather strange title, suggesting the demonstration would reflect elements of the film 'War Horse' recreated in flowers. In the event, most floral designs reflected different aspects of education, i.e., subjects studied formally, or just learned from life. First was recycling. A shaped plastic coffee jar was cleverly turned into a base for a table-centre posy, filled with translucent beads that expand in water. A submersible light was placed amongst them thus illuminating the base. The posy, using numerous flowers in various shades of pink, was created in a shallow bowl firmly attached to the screw lid of the jar. It was simple, economical, but effective. Study of needlecrafts was a collection of three highly contemporary designs, each of which included materials used in knitting and sewing. window. A large arrangement in shades of pink to red, plus white, lay in front of a 3section metal tea-light frame arched in Gothic style. All tea-lights were battery operated for safety. Flowers included gladioli, hydrangea, chrysanthemum, antirrhinum, and roses. Sports education was again a very contemporary design. Amidst a base of orange roses and zantedeschia a tall, tapering frame held two spheres overlaid with ivy leaves. Badminton rackets, shuttlecocks and tennis balls were used as accessories fixed to the frame. School clubs were depicted by a Gardening Club. On another tall frame, two conical containers, covered in Hessian, held floral arrangements which tumbled down from differing heights. Flowers were purple and lime green with fresh hops. Strings of artificial onion and garlic, gourds, etc. hung opposite. Then came War Horse, pictured

below left, with the background removed to show the design, as the finale. The beautifully intricate shape of a horse had been created by David out of woven vines around a wood and metal frame. Onto this was placed a triangular floral arrangement in red, white and blue using roses, gerbera, delphinium, and lisianthus. A staff-shaped cane depicted the solider on horseback. It was perfectly apt as we approach the 100th anniversary of the armistice to end World War 1.

Views Sought on Polling Districts in Charnwood A consultation about polling districts in Charnwood began on the 1st October 2018 and people are urged to have a say. The borough council is required to review polling districts, places and stations every five years to ensure voting arrangements are up to date and fit for purpose. This is an opportunity for people to recommend new polling locations and the Council is particularly keen to hear views on any access issues. Geoff Parker, electoral registration officer, said: “This is an important review and it gives people the opportunity to put forward suggestions to improve local voting arrangements in time for the local council elections due in May 2019. “We are particularly keen to hear from people who may have views on access arrangements to polling stations as we want to make sure everyone can exercise their right to vote with ease.” There are more than 133,000 registered voters in Charnwood and currently there are 76 polling districts. For more information about the review, please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/pollingreview Anyone who has any ideas or comments should email electoral.services@charnwood.gov.uk or write to Electoral Services, Southfield Road, Loughborough, LE11 2TX. Your comments need to be submitted before Wednesday 12th December 2018, when the consultation ends.

NOVEMBER 2018

It is a sad fact that none of us are getting any younger, and although, in our minds we are still eighteen, our bodies are telling us a different story. Our joints are creaking, our wits are not so sharp and ‘senior moments’ happen more often. So we are asking for some help. Every year the number of volunteers who turn up rain-and-shine to keep the work of the ‘Friends’ ticking over is diminishing, so that now everything falls on the shoulders of the same small band of stalwarts. We have set ourselves a long list of things to be done in the cemetery. We remove branches when they fall from the trees, and we work closely with the City Council to make sure the cemetery is looking as good as it possibly can. We liaise with the Royal Horticultural Society, which provides advice and some welcome funding to enable us to add more plants to the borders. We help visitors to the cemetery to locate long lost relatives, and we provide comfort for those who are going through a difficult time in their lives. None of these tasks takes money. What we really need is pairs of hands, your pair of hands. We know that many of our members are scattered far and wide across the world, but if you live close to the cemetery, why not consider giving us an hour or two out of your busy lives? We’re a friendly bunch, we don’t bite, and who knows, you may enjoy the experience. Go on, give it a try. For more information visit our website: www.freindsofbelgravecemtery.org.uk

New Army Cadet Detachment Opens

L-R: Staff Sgt. K Bateman, OU P.Bhatty, Sgt Major Love, Major Wells OC, Sgt Major D Bateman, 2nd Lt. E. Pincombe, Sgt R. Stokes.

The army cadets have opened a new detachment at Wreake Valley Academy (Off Parkstone Road). During the Open Evening on Monday 1st October, members of the public were welcomed by the adult volunteers and some young cadets. The Army Cadet Force is one of the country’s largest voluntary youth clubs, with nearly 40,000 cadets aged 12 to 18 years. During the Open Evening, members of the cadets spoke to local adults and children about activities and opportunities. The Syston detachment is looking to recruit adult volunteers to help the group

every Monday evening from 7.00 to 9.30pm. All new adults receive training and get to learn new skills, meet new people and help make a difference by inspiring young people through fun and adventure. One of the parents shared their thoughts: “My daughter has had the opportunity to challenge herself in so many ways. She has learned a lot about herself and her capabilities along the way. She has gained and developed skills and now has a CV full of accomplishments, which will undoubtedly help her in future career and professional opportunities.” Every week the Cadets learn new practical skills. They are encouraged to work with others as part of a team and make new friends. With the support of Wreake Valley College, SMI Darren Rickman and his team of volunteers were busy preparing the detachment for the opening. Darren said “It has been an exciting time for all of us especially opening a new detachment. I am looking forward to building a team of new adult volunteers. We have a very busy programme where the children will be engaged in positive activity which will help them build greater confidence and develop more independence. We’re here every Monday evening, so feel free to pop in! You’ll find us opposite the floodlit courts or give me a call on 0754 066 7438”.

Watermead Run Presentation Evening July saw another record year for The Watermead Run, organised by the Rotary Club of the Wreake Valley and Syston Rotary Club. 550 runners entered the three and five mile races in July and in doing so raised over £5,000 for local charities. On a Presentation Evening last month Wreake Valley Rotary Club presented this money in cheques to three charities, Leicestershire Children's Holidays (formerly ‘Mablethorpe’), HCPT (a charity offering pilgrimage holidays for disabled and disadvantaged people) and Dementia UK. Our picture above shows President Charlie Stevens with the representatives from the three charities. Wreake Valley Rotary meet 7.30pm on Wednesdays at the Britannia Inn, Queniborough, Syston meet 7.30pm every second Monday at Syston Rugby Club, Queniborough. New members welcome.

Jeez, we’re into single digit weeks until Christmas now – where has 2018 gone? We’ve had many-a-top film this annum, but now we are in the ‘luxury end’ of the year as I like to call it. This is when all the Oscar-baiting movies drop, and the chat shows are crammed full of film talent campaigning for those golden statuettes. This month though, I don’t have too many hotly-tipped Academy Award potentials so… erm… what an awkward segue… we’ll wait until next month I guess! Widows Okay, okay – maybe this has a chance at the Oscars. Steve McQueen -- no not the strawberry brownhaired (yes that’s a new colour) Hollywood legend who looked about 45 years old at 25 but weirdly never really visually aged again -- where was I? Oh yes, McQueen (director) returns to the big screen after five years out. His last movie, 12 Years a Slave, was a big hit at awards season and I think he will be hoping to re-live that again here. Set in contemporary Chicago, amidst a time of turmoil, Widows centres on four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities. They take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms. The screenplay is penned by Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn and stars an illustrious cast of Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Liam Neeson and Colin Farrell. This is one for a date night… In UK cinemas: 6th November 2018 Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald The beasts are back! Yes, those ugly Eddie Redmayne and Colin Farrell chaps are gracing the big screen again – yuck. I jest, I jest… they aren’t gracing the screen, they’re ruining it! I’m kidding Potter fans!

Put your wands down! The second instalment of the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ series, set in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World, features more adventures of magizoologist Newt Scamander as this time he battles Grindelwald’s (Johnny Depp) plan to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings. As bad things begin to muster, Albus ‘insert wise quote here’ Dumbledore arrives to help save the day with Newt. And who is playing the younger version of the bearded, haggard genius? That unpleasant-looking Jude Law… This film is packed with 4/10s isn’t it? In UK cinemas: 16th November 2018 Creed 2 Three years ago, Creed was one of the best emotive action films of 2015. And now a trio of years along the line, all the cast are back for round two (yes mate, I did a boxing joke!). Under the tutelage of Rocky Balboa (Sly Stallone), newly crowned light heavyweight champion Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) faces off against Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). The big man Dolph is back decades later as Creed 2 helps us to re-live Rocky 4. This is definitely worth a whirl, just for the chemistry between Michael and the consistently brilliant, Tessa Thompson. She stole the show for me three years ago, and she’s still a scene-stealer here too. In UK cinemas: 30th November 2018 Suspiria Yes, I am plugging one of the best movies of the year again. Yes, it is the finest film I saw at Venezia75. Yes, I implore you to see it. Luca Guadagino’s remake-come-rebootcome-standalone film (that’s as mad a description as the plot!) follows a worldrenowned dance company that becomes engulfed in a tense and dark mystery as a young dancer, an artistic director and a grieving psychotherapist try to find reasoning. “Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.” This is a must-see, tell me @CineroomTweets (Twitter) or @CineroomPosts (Facebook) your thoughts once you make it out the other end… In UK cinemas: 16th November 2018 Adam Ray Palmer Creative Director of Cineroom Twitter: @CineroomTweets Cineroom is an award-winning film site!

Barkby, Beeby and Back A sunny morning, the elder folk of the 3rd Battalion the U3A Walking Group (nickname ‘The Mountain Goats’) met in Barkby - an outing to Beeby and back. Armed with bottled water, sandwiches and an optimistic splosh of sun cream the group gathered around Deputy Head Sherpa Barbara. “But where was Head Sherpa Rob?” At home, feet up, recovering with a cup of tea. So Barbara set off, armed with a nine year old map and we followed, a muscle straining, buttock clenching walk along bye-ways and paths to our resting place (no not the final one) – at Beeby church, where we’d recuperate and return. She led with a clear sense of direction. It’s as well, as some of us hadn’t a clue where we were. “We’ll stay together in a group”. Fat chance. “Gather round, I’ll tell you where we’re going. Down here, turn right, cross the field, aim for those trees over there. See where I’m pointing?”. We’d no idea where but we nodded Yes. A walk through pleasant pasture, ploughed fields, and over one stile. Jackie (‘I hate stiles’) picked the walk especially for its lack of climbing, grunting, and straining. “Stiles are alright but they’re a nuisance when all you want is a nice flat walk”. Being short in the leg I have to agree. Four fields, a sharp turn here, a gate there, not a hint of being lost, we reached Beeby. After all that chatting we needed a break: it was sandwiches out, Vimto uncorked, and oranges sucked. There’s not a lot to Beeby, but it has an old church dating from the 13th century. You’d be old as well if you went back that far.

SYSTON TOWN NEWS

There’s a tale about two brothers who built the church – they argued over whether it should have a spire or tower. One shoved the other off the roof and that was the end of it. And the end of one of the brothers too. Soon we were off, sinews straining, eyes peeled. “Stay together crossing this road, can’t see what’s coming round these bends”. A firm hand and quite right. She takes her responsibility responsibly. Backmarker Barry had his work cut out with stragglers and diddle dawdlers. The birdwatchers spotted Buzzards and Red Kites, three of them. One red kite belonged to a lad playing truant but the others circled above looking for lunch in the stubble below. Pheasants waddled about, or they might have been partridges. And partridges, or they might have been pheasants. We chuckled a fair bit too. Kelvin made us laugh with tales about lost luggage on cruise ships, and his wife Alma made us laugh with tales about Kelvin. Back to Barkby, some went home, duty called - dog walking, peeling carrots, shouting at grandchildren, and the rest went to the Mash Tun cafe: tea and scones at the converted double decker bus, an antiques shop full of bits of this and that, allsorts, but not a liquorice one to be seen anywhere. By the end 15 were counted out and 15 counted in. Back marker Barry was relieved they’d made it without strains, sprains, or alien abductions. He told Deputy Sherpa Barbara that she’d led the walk really well. Barbara said thank you and blushed. THE JOURNAL OF SYSTON TOWN COUNCIL NOVEMBER 2018 East Midlands in Bloom Awards – Silver Gilt for Syston Syston Town Council are very proud to have achieved a Silver Gilt in this year’s East Midlands in Bloom Awards. We would like to thank everyone who helped the town achieve this award. The volunteers, in particular the U3A gardening club and the U3A art club and Syston in Bloom group for their tremendous transformation of Syston Railway Station. To the Council’s own parks team, David, Gary and Clive. Thank you to all those who entered the Best Front Gardens Competition and for embracing the theme of environmental responsibility. To the public houses; the Grosvenor Snooker Club, Queen Victoria, Syston Social Club and the Fox and Hounds for making their pub gardens so welcoming and attractive. The Judges also recognised the colourful residential gardens at St Peter’s and St Paul’s Court. Thank you to all the local shops and businesses that sponsored flower tubs and the majority of the 133 stunning hanging baskets on display this year, and finally, to the local schools and allotment gardeners for their valuable contributions to Syston and our entry. The Portfolio which showed the judges how Syston blooms during the other seasons along with a copy of the judges reports are available to view on the Syston Town Council website. Paper copies are available at the Council office. A jovial presentation evening was held at the Queen Victoria in September and was attended by the many volunteers that worked so hard towards our entry.

The Chairman, Cllr Paul Henry presented the results that were given to him, Dave Smith and myself when we attended the awards event, which were: Large Town Category – Syston – Silver Gilt Award Best Pub Garden – The Grosvenor Snooker Club – Silver Gilt Award Best Front Garden – Mr Sai Baba, who is 40

As recommended by East Midlands in Bloom judges, small areas of it will be left in an effort to maintain sustainable areas to encourage as diverse a range of insect species as possible, knowing that they form an essential part of the eco-system. Even the smallest wildflower meadow will provide homes for many of the creatures that enrich our lives. Christmas Event 2018 Plans for the 2018 Christmas Event are now underway. The exciting new style event this year, will take place on Sunday 2nd December on Melton Road and car park. A separate notice is shown below and the advertisements can be found on page 33 and in the What’s On. Barkby and Beeby W.I. In September we were treated to a virtual tour around the Little Theatre by Mike Bull. Mike gave us a potted history of the theatre from when it opened in Dover St Baptist Church in 1930 to the fire, caused by a homeless soldier who hid there to keep warm for the night and fell asleep with a cigarette in his hand. The rebuilding took over three years and cost of £30,000. The slides showed the theatre and the back stage areas as it was in the past and how it looks now. There are open evenings where you can go and find out about the theatre and how you can get involved by volunteering in several different areas. They also hire out props and costumes to other amateur dramatic societies and individuals, so if you fancy dressing up as a Dame or maybe a Victorian lady, that is the place to go. Mike was entertaining with his anecdotes, and as he has acted there for many years, he had quite a few! With his booming voice it was easy to see how he would come across on stage. At our next meeting our speaker is Douglas Wright with 'My Parade of Hits'. If you would like to join us please come along, you will be most welcome. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in Barkby Village Hall.
