As the 1960’s era unfolded the beginning of the ‘counter culture’ was born. This is a way of life where individuals held a set attitude which was opposed to the prevailing of the social norm. This was then when the rise of the ‘hippie’ culture and other various lifestyles began to emerge.
The Woodstock festival was a major event in 1969 and is still talked about today. It has since been celebrated on occasion including the 25th anniversary. The culture at this time was very divided as it was when the Vietnam war took place. Individuals saw Woodstock as a place where they could be happy and have fun during this difficult time.
Using inspirational images from the festival I created some digital illustrations. From these I have developed patterns and created a colour story which I feel represents the 69’ culture well. Rather than creating a bright colour story I wanted to take inspiration from the colours included in the olden time/black and white photos.
Here I have created some typography samples. I decided I wanted to use a handwritten typography rather than a digital one for my zine title as I felt this best suited the 60’s era. Many pictures from Woodstock include handwritten signs, using this kind of typography links in best to my research. I have also looked into some design layouts to help me in deciding which way I would like the zine to look.
